Levinson to Present Community Spirit Award at 32nd Annual MLK Ceremony

A

tlantic County will honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at its 32nd annual birthday commemoration. The ceremony will feature the presentation of the Community Spirit award to an outstanding resident who exemplifies his principles through their involvement in the community and their efforts to improve the lives of their fellow citizens.

This year’s honoree is Atlantic City resident Shalanda Austin. She will be recognized on Friday, January 18 at 11 AM at the county office building in Atlantic City, 1333 Atlantic Avenue.

“Ms. Austin may not yet be well known to all because she has quietly worked to make a difference in our community without expectation or need of personal recognition. She is truly one of our unsung heroes,” said County Executive Dennis Levinson. “It is for that reason that I am proud to honor her with this award in the name of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who embodied humility. As he once said, ‘Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.’”

Austin is a lifelong resident of Atlantic City.

She graduated from Atlantic Cape Community College with an Associate degree in criminal justice in 2005 and earned a BA in political science from Stockton University in 2008. She is currently working towards her Master’s degree.

She was called into the ministry after college

and in 2009 was nominated Christian Woman of the Year by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Atlantic City chapter. Austin founded In My C.A.R.E. Mentoring Program in 2015 to provide services for at-risk girls ages 8 to 18 and help coach them through life’s challenges and journeys. Austin recently launched two additional programs for young boys in Atlantic City and Pleasantville as well as Mentors Meet, a mentoring network designed to connect local and national youth leaders.

Austin is employed by the Atlantic City Board of Education but can also be found teaching gospel at a local senior citizen’s facility and administering encouragement and prayer to the weary at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and Oscar McClinton Park. She is also the author of a 40-day devotional and prayer journal. Her desire is to be a vehicle of change for the community.

The keynote address will be presented by Rev. Latasha D. Milton, senior pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church in Atlantic City. Rev. Milton has a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary with a certificate in Black Church Studies. Upon graduation, she was the recipient of the Walter-Maulder Leadership Award and the Urban Ministry Award. She also earned a BS degree in Pre-Med Biology and graduated with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and celebrate the memory, inspiration and powerful life lessons of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Nurturing your health From the Editor

W

e all wear many hats in this life. I know that I wear quite a few of my own throughout any given day. I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a caregiver, writer, editor, tutor, and the list goes on. I spend most of my time caring for or serving others except for one hour per day that is dedicated solely to my own self care. For those 60 minutes, I take care of the one person that I am most responsible for.

Whether I am at the gym, in the yoga studio, or running, I dedicate that time to my physical and mental well being. It’s a daily appointment with myself that I will not cancel.

Some call it self care, fitness or even therapy.

At times I've felt selfish or even self indulgent for claiming it as mine. But I know that you cannot pour from an empty cup and it is up to me to make sure my cup is filled. If I do not preserve and nurture my own health, I will have nothing to offer the others in my life.

Many people take their health for granted, until a problem strikes. The first time I realized how precious and fragile my health is was when my children were very young. I reached down to

pick up a cheerio (Yes, a 2 ounce CHEERIO) off the floor, like I had done a million times before.

But this time something slipped out of place in my back and suddenly I was in excruciating pain.

Every tiny move that I had taken for granted became painful and laborious. It was in this season of my life that I decided my health would always be a top priority in my life.

Your health truly is your wealth. Without it, everything quickly becomes meaningless. Our health is multifaceted and complex. Mental health, physical health and preventive healthcare all play vital roles in our well being.

Check out Hometown Heroes, volunteers in Medicine. This organization is an amazing network of volunteer doctors, nurses and clinicians right here in Egg Harbor Township that offer free healthcare for members of our community that may not otherwise have access.

Nancy Adler Nutrition has become a go-to health staple in our community. She has helped countless people restore and maintain wellness.

t’s been a warm winter so far, no discounting that! There’s good and bad to it though. The good?

It was supposed to happen. Since our last big cold snap in November I’ve been touting the idea that we’d warm by mid December and it could last 3-4 weeks. It came. It lasted nearly a month, now we will see a big change going the

other way. The bad news? Well, that’s for you warm weather lovers. I fully expect a 30-45 day period of colder than average temperatures and multiple snow chances.

Our first snow chance may come as early as this weekend. Still two equally likely scenarios on the table. One would bring a glancing blow with maybe a dusting to a few inches. The other? A sizable mid-Atlantic snow storm. I think by tomorrow we will have a much better idea as to which way we will lean with the forecast. Very possible we miss out on this one though as high pressure up to the north could suppress it south, very much like the storm we missed out on last month that went into Virginia.

Any way you look at it, hit or miss, we will get lots of snow and cold this winter!

Hometown Heroes: Volunteers in Medicine

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is a volunteer-based free clinic that is providing an invaluable resource for the uninsured in our area. VIM provides high quality health care and preventative medical services to Atlantic and Cape May County residents. VIM began in 2002 in Cape May County and has since expanded into Atlantic County as of March 2017.

The Egg Harbor Twp. clinic servicing Atlantic County is comprised of volunteer doctors and nurses, some of which are retired while others are still actively practicing.

Many of the volunteer health care

providers have served in other countries and recognize the need for health care in our own community.

“We provide free health care to the people in the community that fall through the cracks, the working poor. Healthcare is complex and expensive. We are all one issue away from it happening to us, “ says Jacqueline Meiluta, Executive Director of Volunteers in Medicine of South Jersey.

In order to receive care, patients must meet specific criteria including having no usable insurance and no more than 300% of income above the poverty guidelines. Patients will typically receive an appointment within a week of calling VIM and see a doctor within two weeks.

The services offered at VIM are expansive and include orthopedics, cardiology, acupuncture, massage therapy and urology - all within the same building. If prescription medications are needed, VIM is

he weekend of January 19th the city of Atlantic City (along with the rest of America) will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I would like to point out two great celebrations in Atlantic City.

The first is an event great for the entire family at The Atlantic City Free Public Library located at 1 North Tennessee Avenue in Atlantic city. The 6th Annual MLK Read In, local people of note from Atlantic city will stop in at 1pm to read various selections from Dr. King’s inspirational writings including “I have Been To The Mountaintop” and “Letter From a Birmingham Jail.” People with library fines due may also on this day, January 19th,

Our mysterious, beautiful backyard

W

hen you really get down to it, having the Pine Barrens right in our very own backyard here in South Jersey, is like living in a never-ending, episodic, reality TV show. I mean, where else can you find a place where you can go from 39,000 people per square acre to zero people per square acre, inside of a thirty minute drive? Where else can you find many, many species of plants and animals that live no where else in the world? Or a place that comes with it’s own, built-in monsters and legends that have been haunting the area and going on since before the white man even got here in the 1600’s, the Lenni-Lenape Indians referring to the place as Popuessing, meaning “the place of the dragon“? A place inhabited by folks…”Pineys”, some call them… that were once thought to be so strange and dangerous to the gene pool as to have the Governor of NJ in 1913, James F. Fielder, try to enact legislation to sterilize them, ridding the state of future generations of “half-wits and imbeciles“. And that’s not even mentioning the clan of “Jackson-Whites”, the albino, club-wielding tribe of zombies, that are rumored to be marauding through the Barrens, in search of their next hapless victim.

Yeah, buddy. We have it all. And it’s all right here, in our back yard!

I’ve always said that the Pine Barrens is not only a real place that consists of 1.1 million acres of pristine forests, wetlands, lakes and rivers sitting on top of 17 trillion gallons of the purest water on Earth, but also, it’s also a state of mind. It’s a giant, blank canvass, waiting for any artist, songwriter, journalist, screenwriter, adventurer, or filmmaker to ply their talents, as it were, and create beauty and serenity from a place that makes up nearly one third of the most densely populated state in the nation. A place where you can find “sugar sand”

roads with holes and ruts capable of swallowing a car, rivers and streams that flow with water that looks like strong iced tea, and a place where the silence is deafening, you can hear it, interrupted only by sounds that seem to echo and echo for miles. The Pine Barrens have been described as “our heavenly, secreted place” by naturalists that trek along it’s miles and miles

of trails, as well as by Caddy-driving wise-guys from New York alike. It’s a place of great paradox, and begs for active imaginations.

Like any place that draws strong forces from both sides of the emotional conservation poles, the Pine Barrens have become a political football, used to get votes because of what a person, party or group wants to do, or not to do, with any or all of

it, and for a million different reasons on each side. There are those for and against pipelines that are slated to traverse through or near it. There are those for and against off-road vehicles that are traversing through or near it. There are those that want to shut it down altogether, and others that see it as a beautiful new development of neighborhoods, parks and

retirement communities. In 1960, there were even those that wanted to turn it into the largest jet port in the world, complete with a supporting, adjoining city.

But the Pines is no stranger to being fought over and monkeyed around with. A long time ago, a guy named Joseph Wharton tried to sell water from his considerable land holdings in the Pine Barrens to the City of Phil-

adelphia. Luckily, the NJ Legislature stepped in and forbade it. In 1954, Wharton’s family sold thousands of acres of the family’s land to the State of NJ, creating the Wharton Tract State Forest that we now know and enjoy today.

It was long rumored that in 1850, there were no trees anywhere from the sea shore to the Delaware River, the clear-cut “foresting” practices being so severely unmanaged by the iron and glass-making companies as to completely level most of the trees in Pine Barrens for use as fuel. And in the great mysterious paradox that is seemingly always accompanying anything to do with the Pines, the abysmal practice of yesterday’s clear cutting drove the forges and glassworks west, along with the workers and their families, leaving deserted the obce-flourishing cities and towns, and allowing the Pine Barrens to regrow and rejuvenate themselves into how they were originally when they were found, and, for the most part, how we enjoy them today. But, if you look hard enough in the right places, the ghosts of the cities and towns are still there, but they’re covered with the green and the silence of time that scream deep in the woods, making the Pine Barrens of today the special, stillwild island in the sea of civilization, that it is.

Ocean City resident Sally Onesty will be honored with the Martin Luther King Award for her support of individuals and families battling the effects of addiction.

Students from grades 7 and 8 at the Ocean City Intermediate School will be honored for their winning essays.

Volunteers are invited to join others nationwide in a Day of Service earlier on Jan. 21 to honor Dr. King’s contributions. Citizens are asked to participate in a citywide cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon. Sign-up and supply distribution will take place at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center, located in the Community Center, 17th Street and Simpson Avenue. Hot drinks and refreshments

Without their passion and dedication, many of these sea mammals would surely die. Events like Ales for Whales allow this very worthy organization to raise enough funds to continue their work saving our sea life.

MMSC also strives to educate the public by offering outreach programs as well as internships for college students and summer camps for children.

Importance of Swim Safety

W

e enrolled our twins in swim lessons when they were 14 months old. At the time, it felt young but after speaking with Katrina Abbottt, Aquatics Director at Tilton Fitness, I realized that it wasn’t so young after all because they enroll babies as young as 6 months old in their program.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in the world and it is preventable. As you focus this month on New Year’s resolutions

and how to improve yourself, make sure you also think about your children. Resolve to provide them with the necessary skills so that they know how to swim and can save themselves in the event of an emergency.

When children begin swim lessons at a young age, the focus is on getting them comfortable in the water. This usually involves mom, dad or a family member

accompanying the child in the water. As they get older, the focus shifts to important skills like treading water, turning in a circle to locate an exit, being able to swim to an exit, pulling oneself out of the water without a ladder and emerging to the water surface after jumping in. Water safety is important to teach children not only because we live at the beach, but because children are naturally curious when they see water. They can wander away in the blink of an eye and if that happens, you want them to be able to save themselves.

Katrina Abbott teaches swim lessons to people of all ages and needs at Tilton Fitness through private instruction and semi-private instruction. Lessons are held in 8-week sessions with prices starting at $160. Tilton Fitness is one of several area locations offering swim lessons to children with autism through Massi’s Mission, which is part of Faces for Autism.

These lessons are one-on-one and scholarships are available. More information can be found at www.faces4autism.org.

The winter months can be long with young children and if you find yourself looking for indoor activities on weekends, make sure to check out Family Swim at Tilton Fitness on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm and Sundays from 11am to 1pm. You do not need to be a member of Tilton Fitness to attend Family Swim. Cost is $5 per person or $16 for 4 tickets. Swimming is one of my children’s favorite activities and always feels like a special treat so family swim is a fun option for us.

Winter is a great time to enroll your children in swim lessons so that when summer comes around and they are more exposed to outside pools, they will be ready. Heart Healthy Chicken Noodle Soup

By Recipe from Chef Michael D’Angelo This is a great winter time light warming healthy soup. ▶6 ▶ cups of water ▶6 ▶ celery ribs diced ▶1▶ medium onion diced ▶4 ▶ medium carrots peeled and sliced 1 bay leaf ▶2 ▶ chicken breast or 4 chicken legs and thighs combo skinless Dash of ground white pepper ▶Dash ▶ of Salt (optional) 1/2 lbs of dry egg noodles Bunch of flat leaf parsley.

In one pot, boil 2 quarts of water for the egg noodles.

In another pot, put all items

together and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for an hour. Turn off stove and remove chicken from the pot.

Let chicken cool, remove chicken meat from the bone and dice the meat. Return the diced chicken meat to the pot.

Cook egg noodles and drain and put in the pot with the chicken.

Add a quarter cup of flat leaf parsley to pot. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes and serve. Remove the bay leaf prior to serving.

Variations: Replace noodles with rice. You can also add peas, string beans, can corn.

Gardening Up in the Air

T

rue confessions of a gardener: houseplants fear me. I bring home a beautiful, healthy plant from the store and the other half-dead plants look on with pity and hang their heads a little lower. Flowers in my garden rely on nature and usually fare pretty well, but indoors, they rely on me.

Fortunately, I’m an optimist. So for my next indoor gardening project, I’m excited about Tillandsias, more commonly known as air plants. They have grown in popularity over the last few years, make great gifts, and are apparently easy to grow. The air plants I recently purchased came in glass ornaments atop a bit of moss. It’s basically a miniature terrarium that can be hung from its string.

Many houseplants succumb to overwatering and soggy soil. But air plants do not grow in soil or water. Caring for them is simple. They need high humidity, which can be attained by frequent misting, and

a weekly bath. Immerse them in a bowl of water for about 20-60 minutes. Once hydrated, remove them from the water and allow them to drip dry upside down to drain any water accumulated around the crown, since they can rot if not properly drained.

Air plants are types of epiphytes, from the Greek words for “plant+upon”. They attach themselves to other plants, often trees, and draw their nutrients and moisture through their leaves from the air, rain, and the surface of the supporting plant. Unlike parasites, however, they are not negatively affecting the host. They are native to the southern United States, Mexico, South America, and Central America.

Since they have this unique growing habit, air

plants can be displayed in creative ways without the bounds of a pot of soil like a typical houseplant. In addition to growing them in the globe terrariums normally sold alongside air plants, you can also plant them in seashells, sea urchin shells, or driftwood.

For a trendy look, place them in an open geometric-shaped container. Get creative.

Just remember to display them in a way that they can be easily removed for their weekly bath.

If you are successful in your air plant care, you may be fortunate enough for your original plant to have offsets, called pups. This occurs as the air plant matures; it may even flower.

Sadly, both of these events occur near the end of its life cycle.

Like Charlotte in her web, the old life gives way to the new as the cycle begins again. As the “baby” plant matures, it can be separated to become an independent plant with a new home.

Air plants can be found online or at your local nursery. In either case, your new plant will probably be suffering from lack of hydration, especially if packed in a mailing envelope. Give your new friend a

much needed bath right from the package to ensure a good transition to its new home.

New Jersey Tops the Nation in People Moving Out of the State & Drivers Licenses and More Coming for Illegals

The Hurley Line: ew Jersey has set another record, and, it's very bad news.

More citizens are now moving out of the Garden State than any other state in The Union.

How did this happen? Socialist Democrat polices, that's how! It's now a contagion. Almost 60 percent of all moves within the entire Northeast are people leaving for other less regressive states. More people are moving out versus moving in, which means that fewer people remain to pay the ever increasing tax burden.

The numbers are worse in New Jersey than anywhere else, whereby 67 percent of all New Jersey moves are outbound. We have achieved a status where almost 7 out of every 10 moves in New Jersey are people leaving the state. This math is unsustainable in terms of

wealth flight and the overall loss of productivity that results.

It's no surprise that another socialist democrat state (New York) is in the second worst position at 62 percent of all moves being outbound. Connecticut is tied with New York at 62 percent.

The study was commissioned by United Van Lines, who have been tracking these trends for the past 41 years. Vermont is the only state in the entire Northeast that made the "most moved to" list and topped the list with 73 percent of all moves in the state of Vermont being inbound moves.

Kansas, Ohio, Massachusetts, Iowa, Montana and Michigan follow on the "most moved from" states. Conversely, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, South Dakota and Washington, D.C. rounded out the "most moved to" states.

It's not hard to figure out what's going on here. People are moving from states that are crushing their residents with high taxes, onerous regulations and a high cost of living, in favor of states that are more fair and more free.

Over the past year, things have gotten far worse in New Jersey. Radical policies are being enacted and proposed at an alarming level.

The priorities are very anti-resident taxpayer in nature.

The New Jersey Legislature and Governor are presently considering a law to provide drivers licenses for illegals. Other states around the country have done this and more are proposing to do the same.

Their goal is only slightly masked. It's not about illegals having drivers licenses. The real goal is to provide them with drivers licenses and provide the illegals with a path to become registered voters. The New Jersey Democrat plan is disgusting. They are proposing the drivers licenses ... however, additionally, they are preparing to change the law that all people with a New Jersey drivers license will automatically become a registered voter.

They disguise this by saying that they want more people to participate in our elections.

That's a bald faced lie. They are striving to create an electoral playing field that will lead to a permanent democrat majority here in New Jersey.

It is no accident that currently 11 out of 12 Members from Congress (from New Jersey) are Democrats, along with both United States Senators, Governor and the vast majority of the New Jersey Legislature. It is becoming very difficult for a Republican to win any seat at the county, state or federal level throughout the state.

Regarding the providing of drivers licenses for illegals; the enforcement mechanism is preposterous. The illegals will be responsible to self-report and reveal that they do not have the right to vote. I have no doubt how this will unfold if it is approved.

Make no mistake about it ... The illegals will ultimately be able to vote in New Jersey, whether by walking into a polling place, or, through the vote-by-mail process. In many cases I believe that unscrupulous actors will cast their vote for them without their knowledge.

More than a decade ago, the state of California embarked upon a sneaky incremental plan to give illegals the right to vote. It started with granting a drivers license. They were careful to state that this is only to make them legal to drive and have proper insurance, etc. They declared that the illegals are here and that they need to be able to drive to work and elsewhere.

The California scam provided guarantees that illegals will not have the right to vote.

However, the very next thing that they did was to mix the illegals in with all legal Californians in the motor vehicle date base. I immediately knew what this meant. Their next move was to make all those with drivers licenses automatically registered voters.

And, because they purposely did not separate the illegals from the legals ... the illegals essentially became eligible voters. The Lying Democrats who created this con continue to state that this is a lie that no illegals have the right to vote.

In 2018, cities in California allowed illegals to vote in school board elections. They declared that it's only fair because they have children in the school district and that they deserve a say in the matter.

It's not a stretch to believe that their next step will be to use the exact same logic to next allow illegals to vote in local, county, state and federal elections. They spent more than a decade denying their ultimate plan. There's no denying it anymore. It's here. It's happening.

New Jersey has now graduated past "Baby California" status. We are now proceeding at warp speed heading towards becoming a socialist state. 12 other states in America currently have granted drivers licenses to illegals.

Another important factor in the socialist liberals efforts to provide illegals with drivers licenses is because they know that this document is so valuable in terms of obtaining other citizen benefits that they are not entitled to ... however, they are regularly receiving, such as: job assistance, housing assistance, health care and more.

New Jersey has become so radical in the past year, that our Governor and Legislature are providing millions of dollars in legal assistance to help illegals stay here ... yes, illegally!

They even resorted to cutting Veterans programs to do it.

I remain an eternal optimist, however, I'm not sure that this path toward socialism can be stopped in New Jersey. New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney remains our last, best hope to slow down the rate of speed.

However, as long as our progressive Socialist Democrats continue to live in an alternative Universe ... filled with Rainbows, Unicorns and everything being "free" ... we will remain in grave danger.

How To Create or Change a Habit in 4 Easy Steps!

ell it is a new year, and for many of us, that means setting goals. I don’t know about you, but I am extremely awesome at setting goals! I can set goals all day long, like a boss. I’m like Oprah: A goal for you and a goal for you, and Hey! Here’s a goal for you too, buddy! (wink) It’s the actual follow-through that I get jacked up with. And don’t we all?

This past summer, I went on a mission to learn about habits. I am a very systems-oriented person. I honestly believe that most issues in our businesses and lives can be handled with strategic systems at the foundation. I knew that there had to be some kind of system or trick to creating healthy habits. Why do many people create healthy habits and others don’t? So

I did some research. I fell upon an awesome book, entitled “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg. It broke the science of habits down into a very simple system that can enable you to create and change any habit in your life. This also works if you are trying to change a bad habit. If you understand the science behind habits, you will actually be successful in changing them. So let’s jump in and take a look at what creates a habit.

It is a four part system: “The Prep”, “The Cue”, “The Routine”, “The Reward”. The very first part of creating or changing a habit is “The Prep”.

Think about the habit that you want to create. Let’s pretend that you want to create a habit of going to yoga 3 days per week at 5am. (This is exactly what I did, so it is an easy example. Just jive with me here.) Think about all that you need to do in order for you to go to yoga: You will need to wake up, brush your teeth, get dressed, put your hair up, grab your mat, your block, your coat, your water, and your keys, and then drive to the studio. “The Prep” is preparing all that you can possibly think of in order to make it mindless and easy to choose when the time comes. out the night before, lay your hair tie and headband out on the bathroom vanity, put your shoes next to the door with your mat, place your keys next to your bed to auto-start the car so that it warms up, make sure the gas tank is full. The idea is that you set everything up before the time comes, so the when it does, making the choice to CHOOSE the healthy habit is easy!

Step two in creating healthy habits is “The Cue”. “The Cue” is the thing that reminds us to start the habit that we are trying to create. Let’s revisit my yoga example. I downloaded a great app, called Sleep Cycle, which tracks my sleep and wakes me up at the perfect time in my...sleep cycle... so that I wake up feeling rested and alive. But the alarm does more than just wake me. It alerts me (or “cues” me) to begin the habit, which for me was yoga. It reminds me “Hey, it’s time to do the thing! Do it now! Go!” Set up something that will remind you to begin the same way every day!

Step three is The Routine. This is an easy one. The routine is the thing that you are trying to create a habit of: going to yoga class, calling your Grandmother, following up on business prospects, reading your bible, listening to a great podcast, taking a vitamin.... Whatever it is that you are creating, that is “The Routine”.

The final thing that creates a habit is “The Reward’”. One of the most important components of creating (and maintaining) a habit is the small win that you get along the way. The small wins keep you going. They give you something to aim for. They also give you an incentive to do it again and again. “The Reward” is something we miss all too often. We look for “the

washboard abs”, which take months of training and hard work. When you don’t see those abs after three days, you become discouraged. Instead, set yourself up for a small win after you complete the routine. In yoga, at the end of the class, the instructor lays a freezing cold towel on your mat, which has been drenched in lavender essential oils. Let us pause for a moment and take that in. Inhaaaale.

Exhaaaale. It is the most awesome reward after a sweaty yoga class! It is also small, easy to do, and honestly is what kept me coming back day after day until my body started to get used to the stretching and strength that I was practicing.

Earlier this morning, my assistant texted me a profound statement that she heard on a podcast that we listen to. I thought it would provide the perfect ending to my column this week! She texted me: “People do not decide their futures. They decide their habits. And their habits decide their futures.” Take that as motivation to start creating healthy habits in YOUR life! onscious cooks, founded in 2018 by Kayla Randazzo and Michele Carty is taking Atlantic County on a ride towards health. What originally began as a friendly meet up between two local women who shared a passion for health has grown exponentially in less than a year. Conscious Cooks became and official LLC in 2018 and Michelle and Kayla haven’t stopped cooking since.

Kayla and Michelle, who both have shared a passion for healthy living and cooking as a hobby, found themselves next to each other at a Crossfit Health expo last March. Their instant friendship inspired a collaboration that has amounted to become monthly cooking classes and now, a healthy food deliv-

Cooking classes take place once per month at The Iron Room with some pop-up classes taking place throughout Atlantic County. Class participants receive a menu card and an opportunity to try several different themed dishes at each class. Some previous themes have included BBQ night, A Taste of Thai, and more. Throughout the course of the cooking class, the students are taught why each ingredient was chosen, the nutritional benefits of each ingredient, and ways to get creative with their cooking while staying healthy.

Conscious Cooks had so much success with their classes that they have decided to branch out and begin a food delivery service with all of the delectable meals that cooking class attendees love so much. Each Monday at the Iron Room, Kayla and Michele prep and cook meals for their take out customers for the week. Patrons are able to order as many meals as they’d like for the week up until Saturday. Sunday, fresh ingredients are purchased. Monday is when the magic happens in the kitchen. Then, Tuesday Michele and Kayla deliver the fresh cooked meals in

biodegradable, reheatable containers throughout Atlantic County.

The Conscious Cooks are just getting started as they work to spread a message of healthy living throughout Atlantic County. Their next class is taking place on January 14th from 6-8pm at The Iron Room. Tickets are $45 per person and each guest will enjoy 4-5 different dishes all centered around this month’s theme - healthy comfort food.

Meadowview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center welcomes veterans

Prior to December 7th of 2018, military veterans in need of skilled nursing home care in Atlantic County had to leave their community and travel across the Delaware bay into Wilmington to get the services they needed.

Now military veterans in Atlantic County need look no further than Atlantic County’s Meadowview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Northfield.

Meadowview is a 180-bed facility that offers subacute rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, IV and wound therapy, respite care, hospice care and long term care.

“Having these services available locally will not only benefit our veterans but also their family members who can more easily visit them and transport them without the complication of extensive travel,” added Levinson.

Healthy Packaged Snacks

s one of your resolutions to eat better in the New Year? If so, smart snacking is one of the keys to maintaining a healthy diet. I eat breakfast around 7am and lunch around 12 pm. I can not go all morning without a snack. Most of the time I am busy and on the go so I always have healthy snacks in my bag. If I don’t, I make unhealthy choices and then get off track. I don’t always have time to cut up apples or peel hard boiled eggs (my two favorite snacks) so I need good options available as I’m running out the door. They need to be small,

full of good ingredients and an appropriate amount of calories and fat for a snack. Here are some of my favorites.

A few years ago I discovered Health Warrior Chia Bars. Here is what I love about them. They are 100 calories, packed with chia seeds and are so tasty. My daughter also loves them. Her favorite flavor is acai and my favorite is apple cinnamon. These bars completely satisfy my hunger mid-morning and help me get through until lunch. Chia seeds are loaded with antioxidants and are high in protein.

After the Holidays

he holidays are a great time for us to connect with family and friends, catch up on things we’ve been avoiding, and enjoy rest and relaxation. Although they bring joy and excitement, holiday breaks can throw us off the routines we follow to remain healthy and active.

Traveling, visiting family, attending parties, and entertaining friends consumes each day, leaving little time for exercise. Additionally, many of our holiday plans revolve around food and drink, and a lot of of it!

Enjoyable as they may be, the holidays can disrupt our schedules, mess with our diets, and derail us from our efforts to be active. Don’t let the holidays get the best of you!

Here are some useful tips to consider as you work to get back in shape and back on track after the holidays.

The cravings are real. Especially after eating a ton of sweets and other carbs. Fight hard to get back to a healthy eating routine. Purge your pantry and refrigerator of those leftover sweets. That last piece of grandma’s pie isn’t doing you any favors.

Fill your kitchen up with healthful foods: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Plan your meals out ahead of time so you’re less likely to give into cravings. Also, think about the times of day that you eat. Eat breakfast. Have an early

lunch. Move your evening meal up by 30 minutes or an hour to keep your metabolism in check. Starving your body only sets you up for overeating and encouraging those hard to get rid of cravings.

Water , water and more water!

Stay hydrated my friends .The alcohol, egg nog, and other holiday drinks you imbibed are highly caloric and dehydrating.Get your body back to optimal water content by filling up that water bottle and keeping it with you all day long. Aim for drinking 64 ounces or so a day.

Routines are so important ! Many of us don’t like to admit it, but we are creatures of habit. A variety of bad habits form or resurface during the holidays and can stay with us for weeks following. Fortunately, we can also establish habits that are good for us. Try to set a consistent schedule that allows you to incor-

porate healthy choices and physical activity. Map out your week and see where you can find some free time each day. Routine schedules can be used for practically anything: eating, exercise, sleep, work and play. You’ll be amazed at how much much you can accomplish if you simply plan in advance.

Try to cut back the overeating .

Over the holidays we tend to skip meals and overindulge in food. Try to get back to a consistent diet and eliminate binge eating. If you find yourself hungry between meals, curve your appetite with a light snack. Another tip is to avoid meals that aren’t portioned. Unnecessary serving sizes or buffet-style meals make it easy for us to eat until we’re stuffed, rather than until we’re satisfied. Plan to cook only enough food for yourself and those eating with

you. When eating out, seek to order the regular, “smaller” portion; you’ll still get plenty of food in your system. Buffets should be avoided, but if you do go, be selective and make an effort to eat only your favorite foods, not one of everything. And if you happen to overeat one meal, try to eat lighter the next meal.

Be active daily. This doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym hard for several hours each day. A daily activity can be as simple as going for a walk. In fact, it is recommended we take 10,000 steps each day.

Most of us don’t even come close to that! This number can be easily achieved by walking around the neighborhood, spending time at the mall, or walking during work breaks.

Once you become comfortable with doing something active every day, consider increasing your activity.

Pick a few days out of the week to do some form of exercise that is a bit more challenging. Again, this doesn’t have to be grueling physical activity, just something that requires a little more effort and discipline than you’re used to.

Sign up for a 5k, go to the gym a few days a week, or register for a fitness class. This method allows for a steady progression of your physical capabilities and will serve as the base for your next challenge.

Staying up too late and sleeping in the next day can throw everything out of order. Proper sleep heals, provides energy, promotes balance, curbs cravings, and produces critical hormones.Circadian rhythm is a strong ally in restoring balance. Start your bedtime relaxation routine earlier than usual to

yourself up to succeed by rewarding yourself when you meet goals.Reward yourself with happy thoughts and positive encouragement every day. Consider a massage, a new pair of running shoes, or a new set of hand weights when you meet a longer goal.

As with starting new things, getting back on track can be hard and take time. Be intentional. Grab an accountability partner to help you along. Be patient with yourself. And get moving again!

Getting back on track doesn’t have to be complicated. Stick to simple goals that are attainable and easy to build upon. Keep in mind that doing something is better than nothing. Before you know it, you’ll be where you want to be: ready to take on the next holiday!

The Unfit Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit: FOUR TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

t’s that time of year. Everyone’s whipping out their running shoes, pink dumbbells, and purchasing their gym memberships. January sparks a sudden urge to exercise, and I know that feeling all too well. As someone who has struggled with their weight, I’ve garnered some special tips to get your body back into shape. My jean size has fluctuated up and down, but this year, I’m sticking to a healthy, clean-eating lifestyle.

If you want that perfect bicep, or at least to feel good about yourself, here’s my tips for starting the New Year off right: 1. Lower Expectations: What keeps you going? For so many of us, it’s the beach body fantasy. We drool over our future flat bellies, flawlessly-curved waists, and envious thigh gap. The “beach body effect” keeps us moving, but it’s not reality. At my lowest weight, I still had belly pudge and wore a size 10 jeans. That’s okay. If we continue striving toward the perfect body, burnout is inevitable. Remember that the goal is to feel comfortable in our own bodies, not to get recruited by a modeling agency.

2. Have fun Studies prove that suffering through brutal workouts isn’t sustainable. My downfall has always been exercise boredom. I’ve never found a workout I could enjoy for long periods of time, and when I stopped exercising, I gained weight. This year, I promise myself fun workouts with tons of variety. Go for a run through the woods, ride bikes with friends, drown in sweat at hot yoga, or have a football catch with your dad. If you’re crying every time you climb on the elliptical, change

it up. If you dread weight lifting (even though it’s super healthy), try a Zumba class.

The more you shake it up, the more weight you will lose.

3. Balance, Not Restriction You’ve heard the old “cutting carbs” trick, right? Well, I’m living proof that that diet doesn’t work. When I was 16, I cut bread and pasta completely out of my life, and I lost weight. Sad News----I gained most of it back. Why? Cutting a complete food group out of your diet cannot be sustained for a lifetime. I found that I was sad during that time, too. I never ate birthday cake (even my own), didn’t take communion at church, and missed out on ice cream dates with my friends. Food shapes our culture and our lives, so why punish yourself? My nutritionist Nicole preaches that food should make you happy, and when we appropriately balance healthy food with treats, we can lose weight and still feel whole.

4. Practice Self Care and Self Love Self-care and self-love lay the foundation for success.

Just because you’re out of shape doesn’t make you any less worthy of love and care. As you start your fitness journey, be kind to your body. Let your-

self have a rest day, don’t push yourself too hard (but still maintain consistency), and compliment your successes. Before I go for a run, I pick a self-love mantra to keep me moving. “You’re worth it.” “You deserve to be comfortable in your own body,” and “Your potential is endless” are some of my favorites. Give yourself a round of applause after every workout (it may seem silly, but you’ll feel invincible).

Treat yourself to a yummy smoothie or snack after a tiring day. Once we learn to take care of ourselves, our bodies will show it from the inside out.

Take “New Year, New You” to the next level. I hope that as you flock to the gym and break in your new workout clothes, you learn to love yourself and healthy lifestyle choices. I hope that for you, this isn’t just a January thing. I hope it becomes a part of you that lasts a lifetime.

Breathing Easier A neti pot is a container designed to rinse debris or mucus from your nasal cavity. You can use a neti pot to treat symptoms of nasal allergies, sinus problems or colds. A warm salt and water solution is used to flush out the nasal passages. If you choose to make your own saltwater solution, it's important to use bottled water that has been distilled or sterilized. To also breathe easier, you can diffuse eucalyptus, wintergreen , peppermint or clove essential oils.

Stay Hydrated Don't dehydrate! If you do get sick it’s important to drink even more fluids – especially when you have vomiting or diarrhea. Cut back on the food, and drink more fluids.

One way to re-hydrate and re-mineralize is with alkaline/ ionized and infused water. You can add lemon, lime, maple syrup, honey or sea salt to your water. Adding stock, bone broth, green drinks and tea to your fluid line-up will also add nutrients.

ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson MEDICINAL MARIJUANA; HOW MUCH TO TAKE AND IN WHAT FORM TO TAKE IT? Part II Delivering Cannabis by Smoking Some medical concerns about smoking cannabis point to the 700 or so compounds found in the ower, turning into thousands of compounds when combusted and inhaled into the lungs. Backes 2017 noted that some known carcinogens are found among these chemicals. These toxins are linked to pulmonary disease and cancer “in tobacco users”, not cannabis users. This is important, UCLA researchers have not found that long term use, or chronic smokers of cannabis, were found to NOT have an increased risk or incidence of head, neck, or lung cancers. But this doesn’t mean “no risk”.

A cannabis cigarette may deliver 27% THC out of the high amount that is available in the sample. Glass pipes may deliver about 50% of that available. A couple light puffs should give enough of a dose where deep inhaling and holding would not be necessary. So, a quick inhale then a quick exhale of the cannabis smoke. This is not a recommendation to smoke cannabis, but if you are going to smoke it then knowledge is needed, and care should be taken.

We just discussed smoking and vaping medicinal marijuana but what about using sublingual tinctures or oils?

What is a tincture? For our purposes it is a small 1 oz. or 1/2 oz bottle with a liquid that has a strong alcohol-based oil containing cannabis derived from plant material (Or more simply, soak some weed in alcohol for a month then squeeze it real hard and “presto” you have a cannabis extract (kind of). Some extracts are so strong that you can nd 100mg cannabinoid in one ml oil (1oz has about 30ml per 1 dropper full so that’s about 30 dropper full). So one

As always, start low and go slow. (Take a small dose, wait three days with this dose then increase). There are many different types of vaporizers out there which may be confusing. It would make sense to purchase one form your trusted medicinal marijuana dispensary. Assuredly these have passed government inspections.

Finally, one can use cannabis by suppository, pessary, vaginally, or rectally. These are likely one of the best ways to get it into your circulation because of the lack of stomach digestive properties which reduces the potency of your medicinal marijuana. We may have transdermal patches one day, Patchtek as example, they are currently being researched and could be used to treat: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and MS spasms.

Real Estate Updates

elcome to “Real Estate Updates,” where I will be sharing information on the Atlantic County and the greater Ocean City, NJ area which I will be focusing on real estate statistics, trends, developments, and markets conditions that affect the ever-changing real estate market in our South Jersey shore area.

Nationally, real estate sales are down very slightly from last year just one quarter of 1%, compared to the same time frame as of the end of November 2018.

The Federal Reserve elected to raise the rates four times this year, with the last rate hike on December 19th, 2018.

Locally in Atlantic County, closed sales year to date in 2018 as of November 31.

2018, were up, passing the total units closed in 2017! Up slightly 0.8% year to date for single family homes. The townhouse and condo segment was down 3.5%% but the median sales price for that segment was up 8.2% with 12 days less average market time to sell. This is because the excess inventory has been thinned out over the last 1.5 years in most

categories. The 55 plus-adult community sales in Atlantic County is slightly down so far. The good news for sellers in that category is that the days on the market have gone down a big 34.3% for faster under contract sales as of 11/31/18.

Take for example--Northfield City. As you can see, this chart shows as of the end of November 2018 that single family closed sales are up 6.8% already more units closed for the same time frame for 2017! Days on the market are down 13.8%, which is good, and a welcomed sign for sellers is the percentage of list price received is up actually 3.7%!

Our diversified area of South Jersey offers a tremendous buying opportunity with sales prices going up slightly in the past year in most segments of the market. Serious real estate buyers may want to look now at properties to own and invest in. Possibly the sooner the better, with the Federal Reserve announcing two more possible rate hikes in 2019. This move may occur due to the continued growth of the economy. Our area has seen welcomed growth in commercial real estate developments in the past 2 years and several are on the books to complete in 2019 as well. Have a fabulous 2019!

I

for one think this past Fall (now into Winter) went faster than ever. I do think there is something to the notion that the older you get, the faster time seems to go. But we know that can’t literally be the case.

So, what is it that makes us “think” that time is going faster. There’s nothing scientific about this, but I think it’s because we fill our days with jammed packed hours, pre-committed minutes, with very little or next to no intentionality about how we carve out our time.

Let’s face it, for most of us, (if we let them) someone else sets our agenda and determines how we spend our time each day whether at work or otherwise.

Any more, I feel like it’s Monday and the next time I turn around . . . it’s Monday AGAIN. With Christmas just past, I remember as a kid I thought Christmas Day would never come.

And now, it seems like Thanksgiving was yesterday and Summer ended just last week.

So, what’s my point?

The point is, in 2019 we all need to take better control of our lives. I want to urge you to try some things which might make time slow down a bit. Personally, I’m learning (and have

to remind myself often) that the best way to slow down this hectic pace I seem caught up in, is to live each day with intentionality. What I mean by that is that if I’m to make the most of each day, I need to get better at planning, goal setting, and intentionally living out my day, my week, my month, my year. It’s kind of like taking a road trip. If I just got in the car and started driving without knowing what direction I want to head or where I want to end up, I'd probably just drive aimlessly around in circles eventually arriving somewhere I never intended.

As you and I welcome 2019, we must make a deliberate effort to live each day with intentionality. Live each day "On-Purpose".

Otherwise, one week will turn into the next and the next and life will pass us by. I would suggest you consider incorporating a goal setting, structured plan into your life. Plan out what you want to accomplish by this time next year and then map out a day by day “intentional” plan and path to help you get there.
