5 Things To Remember when Setting 2019 Goals

is upon us and goals are being thrown around like confetti. As you prepare for the upcoming year, there will be plenty of tools, resources, tips, and guidelines for achieving your goals. Use them! This is not one of those checklists. This is a New Year reminder of different sorts.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind as you set 2019 resolutions: You’re already amazing. Whatever goal that you have for yourself will only enhance how great you already are. We live in a society of over achievers and more importantly, public achievement thanks to social media and instantaneous information streams. It seems as though everyone around us is always achieving something and it’s hard to keep up.

Keep in mind as you set your new goals for the year, that right here and now, you’re already great! Anything that you add is only an enhancement. You don’t have to fix anything, you’re not broken. You don’t have to undo anything. You simply have to create a world where you feel alive, healthy, and well. If effort is needed in a particular area of life in order for

you to feel those things, then make the effort!

But just remember that who you are today is already enough.

2. Set your own expectations. The new year brings an unspoken invitation to improve things in your world but how many of us instantaneously go to the same record on repeat every December 31st: I’m going to lose weight, make more money, and stop “insert your personal vice here.”

Whatever goal that it is you choose to set, ask yourself why. Why is this your resolution?

Is this an expectation I have of myself or is this what I think I am supposed to do? Is this what I want for my life or what I think others expect me to do? There is no right answer to this resolution thing.

I’d also encourage you to think about the repercussions and how it relates to your happiness. If your goal is to lose weight, what diet will you choose? Will that diet make you miserable? If so, reevaluate the first point: create a world where you feel alive, healthy, and well.

Whatever you choose this January, just make sure that the goals and resolutions align with your priorities and expectations of yourself. Level up because you want to, not because others expect you to.

3. Stick to the plan and know that plans can change. The only constant in life is change.

It’s easy to get discouraged when life changes and your goals suddenly feel like they fall to the wayside. Sticking to the plan in January is the easy part. When February and March roll around or it’s summer and maybe kids got sick, your marriage got a little messy or you changed jobs it’s a lot harder to stick to Plan A. That’s why your plan should have a plan.

When life changes, be willing to roll with it and adjust accordingly. If your goal was to workout 7 days a week and then you get a new job that requires more of you, allow yourself the grace and flexibility to rewrite the plan.

Maybe 5 days per week is more feasible for you. Let that be okay. Your expectations are set by you and you alone. The only person you have to answer to is yourself. Again, does what you’re doing make you feel alive, healthy and well? If not, adjust accordingly. It all has to work together.

4. Judgement is poison. There is always a group of people every New Year that becomes a little judgemental towards the resolutioners.

Don’t be that person. Some of you have been incredibly successful all year. Maybe you’ve been in the gym 365 days and you’re dreading the new comers January 2nd. You’re tired of hearing people say “new year, new me” and you have something to say about it. Can I encourage you not to? Can I encourage you, to

encourage them?

Many people need the turning of a page, a fresh opportunity, a clean slate to readjust and set their sails going in a positive direction. Be the person who believes in them, not the one who doubts them. Be the person who paved the way this past year and can guide them as needed. Judgement is poison. We need not judge ourselves and we need not judge each other. Let’s work together to rise this year.

5. Be gentle with yourself. You’re a living, breathing, human. You’re a home to life. You’ve been through a lot of things in your life and you lived another year to tell your story. As you get ready to hit those 2019 goals, just remember to treat yourself with grace, gentleness, and kindness. There is nothing worth achieving if it sacrifices your peace and well being. Of course, work hard and push towards the goal but don’t forget to rest and nurture your mind, body, and spirit along the way. Nobody will protect your peace like you can. That’s entirely up to you.

Another Trip Around the Sun From the Editor

T

his time of year brings with it an invitation to reflect on where we’ve been as we shift our focus and set new intentions for where we’re going. The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a transition phase as we look forward to what we would like to achieve and all the ways we’d like to continue to grow in the new year.

Time has a funny way of slipping through our fingers while we’re caught up with our busy lives. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the day to day, even minute to minute details of our lives that we often don’t realize how quickly the weeks, months, and years are passing. Suddenly, we look up and it’s another New Year’s Eve. I can remember as a child how long a year seemed but as the saying goes, “the older we get, the faster it goes.” Now, in the midst of life’s hustle and bustle, time is full speed ahead. Sometimes, it feels like I blink and another year has flown by.

The New Year commands our attention and prompts us to take

this time to pause and reflect.

Although, I have never been a fan of New Year's resolutions, I am grateful for the pause and the opportunity to reset my vision as we move forward into another 365 days.

Memories of Bob Burns

A

s the Community Morns Bob Burns, I mourn my brother.

Bobby… Yes that is how I knew him and what I called him Bobby!

Kids see each other very different.

He was the guy who would sit on me if I misbehaved. The guy who didn’t do chores on his night because he had a hot date and needed a nap. I had to do them for him. So I dumped the onions in his mouth from the dinner table and moved his jaw to chew them up…. He was pretty mad when he woke up. He was also the guy who patiently made breakfast for me which was always different than what he wanted. Yup I was a pain at time to him.

Our father raised Bobby and I to be good, patient, helpful people who used every opportunity to teach. No we were not formal teachers. We are people who see an opportunity to teach a lesson, or a value and gently do it. As I listened to what people were saying about him at his service, I realized that he never lost those values our Dad instilled in us. I was also surprised to learn what a celebrity he was.

He was after all just Bobby to me.

A lesson our Dad taught us was actually pretty funny. We’d been on a school

trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. Some how our mother did not make the bus in time.

When we got home it was discovered she was still in Philly we had to drive back with our Dad to pick her up. Bobby and I had a lot of fun speculating where she was. We decided she got stuck on Monkey Island.

At which time our Dad let us know we were not to laugh or tell her we thought she was stuck with the monkeys. When she got in the car she was mad…. Bobby and I could not look at each other….but we could see that glint in our Dad’s eyes as he stifled a laugh!

My brother was a bit of prankster when I got into high school at first I got Oh No your Bob’s sister? But they learned we were very different. Besides he got away with things….I didn’t. In fact I often got blamed for doing things I never had?

Don’t get me wrong Bobby was always on the edge of getting in trouble.

Imagine in Junior high picking a teacher up and putting her in a trash can? Yes he did! No he did not get in trouble. She thought it was funny! He even managed to go out, get drunk, come home, almost knock our tiny Firestone refrigerator over

Communities Revolutionizing Open Public Spaces

.R.O.P.S. is a local non profit organization founded in 2016.

C.R.O.P.S. stands for Communities Revolutionizing Open Public Spaces and while, growing fresh crops is the cornerstone, the mission for this organization expands beyond the garden. The C.R.O.P.S. mission is to facilitate growth by creating new experiences and places that promote healthy and connected communities.

C.R.O.P.S. was founded by 39 year old mom of four, Paige Vaccaro from Long Island,

NY. Paige’s career began in teaching after graduating from Rutgers University. In 2001, Paige was accepted into the very competitive Teach For America program where teachers and leaders are placed in the most high needs school districts in the country and built into incredibly leaders and influencers. The program is created to build strong leaders with a first hand understanding and perspective on the underserved in our country.

Paige and her husband moved their family to Linwood in 2014 in a season of life transition. It was shortly after this move that C.R.O.P.S. was born. In 2016, Paige along with Marci Lutsky and Jaclyn Todd founded the Linwood Farmer’s Market.

With the guidance, support, and resources of several local friends including Cooper Levenson’s Jill Ojerskis, the trio began the summer market.

Paige knew that she had goals and dreams beyond the market itself but for the first year and a half, she poured her resources and time into the farmer’s market. This past year, however, she began focusing her efforts on the growth of C.R.O.P.S. The C.R.O.P.S. organization brings light and joy to the community through the by products of gardening. There are various pieces in play that make this happen.

Paige dreams of big gardens where all of the vegetables served at local soup kitchens are served from her garden. Until she is able to make that dream come to life though, she offers what she can to make a difference in the community. She began volunteering at Sister Jean's Kitchen in A.C. and formed a team of volunteers to go with her. She began clipping fresh flowers and placing them on the tables at Sister Jean's to bring light into the room just the way Sister Jean would have if she was still alive.

Paige also brings fresh flowers every week to the Welfare Office to brighten the atmosphere.

She works with the children at The Covenant House where she does foster a beautiful

little garden and the kids and women are able to watch their seeds grow to something meaningful. The children have the opportunity to grow the crops and either cook with them or sell them at the Farmer's market.

“When people are in a state of poverty, they're always having to ask for something.

When you have to ask for help, it disempowers. I want to give people resources where they feel empowered and have the opportunity to give back.” shares Paige Vaccaro.

Next on Paige’s list is to grow a field of wildflowers for the community in Atlantic City where she plans to offer jobs to those underprivileged living in the area. The community will be invited to come pick their own wildflowers when loved ones pass or a child graduates high school. The wildflower garden is one more way that Paige aspires to empower the community around her while helping them cultivate something that they can call their own.

This past year C.R.O.P.S. participated in the “Sleep Out to end Homelessness” at the Covenant House, an eye opening experience

for Paige. One memorable moment came when one of the young kids was asked what he would change about the Covenant House and his response was that he wished they had more room for more families. Paige was greeted at the sleep out by the children she had been gardening with and was able to witness the difference that the garden club was making for their lives.

Paige is currently working to get a garden started at the Criminal Courthouse in Mayslanding as a part of the drug court program where drug records can be expunged after 3-5 years after community service, job training, and therapy.

As you can see, Paige Vaccaro is brightening and empowering the community one seed at a time but she is just getting started!

and our parents never noticed???? That night the only way he got to bed was I had to get all 6’7” of him into his bedroom. As I took his shoes off he started to get loud and I had to shush him. I’d hear SSHHHOOOHHH Mom and Dad will hear. Then I took his socks off and put them in his shoes. Major issue - How would his socks sleep…. I explained his shoes and socks were friends.

When he was disowned I refused to give up my brother. Even telling my parents someday it would just be the two of us. No matter what happened as we became adults we talked. We had a couple topics we could never agree on.

We decided those topics were not to be discussed. When I moved to New England our talks moved to the phones. Sometimes a lot, sometimes occasional. Until recently it was mostly me who called.

Still we kept in touch. The distance didn’t matter. In the end I was right it was just the two of us.

Some people may remember that between his Junior and Senior years in high school he had a horrific motorcycle accident. It happened on a Thursday.

We were told if he made it through the weekend he would be in the hospital for 5 to 6 months…. He was out in 5 and a half weeks. In the yearbook for his senior year his ambition was to walk. Imagine one so young hoping to walk some day. He used

a wheelchair to go from class to class.

He’d been told he would eventually end up in a chair…. He refused to entertain that idea that a chair was in his future. Instead he started everyday with stretches and ended every night with stretches. He did this for 43 years…..

The important thing I need to tell you about my brother is because of that almost deadly motor cycle accident he had when we were kids, He eventually became a joint replacement patient. His leg had gone up through his hip and that hip was replaced. While there is controversy on ”if” a joint replacement patient needs antibiotics for dental work I must share that he had an infected tooth that was pulled and he got another infected tooth right away that was due to be pulled. He was not on antibiotics for the second tooth but had them to take before the procedure. Please, always talk to your doctor to see what is the best course of action for you. We will never know what absolutely ended his life. Was it a family history of sudden death in men or an infection or a combination of both? Considering Bobby and I are always teaching.

I felt it necessary to use his death as a teachable moment.

Most of our conversations ended with him saying “Love ya kid” and me saying “Love ya Bob…..” Wish I could still end a conversation that way with him.

Pomegranates - Edible Jewels

I

f I believed in Greek mythology, I would say that pomegranates are the fruit of the gods. But you don’t have to be a goddess to eat like one. Pomegranates are one of those simple accessible indulgences.

They are relatively expensive—about a dollar each this time of year, though that is a small price to pay for luxury.

Cut open a pomegranate and the “seeds” (which are actually arils) look like edible ruby jewels. I cannot resist popping them right into my mouth, their delicious juice bursting with flavor.

Though they taste great all by themselves, many recipes come alive with pomegranates. Add the seeds to salads, yogurt, or ice cream; I squeeze a little of the juice over the ice cream too. One Thanksgiving, I found this wonderful green bean recipe using bacon, goat cheese, and pomegranates—vegetables never tasted so good!

dishes. They are also highly symbolic in Jewish traditions and are mentioned in the Scriptures twenty-five times.

Pomegranate seeds are commonly eaten on Rosh Hashanah as a symbol of righteousness. Each pomegranate is believed to have 613 seeds, which is the same number of commandments in the Torah. I haven’t counted the seeds, but feel free to try.

I’m too impatient to remove the arils properly, but there are two easy methods. Cut the pomegranate in half and separate it into segments by cutting along the white mem-

Make a special holiday drink using pomegranate syrup; the beautiful ruby color will add the perfect festive touch. You may feel like you are indulging when you eat pomegranates, but you can enjoy them guilt-free because they are loaded with antioxidants and are high in vitamin C. Run out today and

treat yourself and your guests to this delicious, nutritious fruit. Take your holiday recipes up a few notches and enjoy this simple taste of the sweet life.

A

t one point or another, most of us have found ourselves in a situation where we either know or question whether we have had too much to drink, impairing our ability to drive home.

The decision we make at that very moment can be the difference between life and death. Thinking carefully and making an informed decision is what makes a Hero.

That is the message that the HERO Campaign wants you to know as you step out Monday night to celebrate New Year’s Eve. On special occasions as well as every day throughout the year, the

accident in July of 2000 just two months after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Senior Moments The Cookie Conspiracy

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings pparently, trying to lose weight during the holiday season is an exercise; an exercise in futility.

I have been trying to lose the same ten or so pounds for a few months but at this time I have resorted to a new strategy; topping the upward trend at least for the time being. It's not that I haven't been vigilant concerning my food intake. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I have been eating smaller portions, drinking more water, exercising, etc. It must be the cookies. Although my wife is not part of a cookie exchange per se, the amount of cookies that have been leaving our house is not proportionate to the amount entering our house. I think I am on solid ground when I say that she bakes the best biscotti anyone has ever tasted.

Requests from her colleagues at work kept coming in so she went to work cranking them out of our little kitchen. Of course the favor had to be returned so cookies of all types made their way into our home. Then she started making what she called junk yard

cookies which have just about everything in them including of course copious amounts of butter, sugar, coconut, M & M's, nuts and

heaven knows what else. The Nestle Company had it out for me when it put the recipe for Brownie cake cookies with white chocolate chips on its packaging. My wife made those and they were incredible! I told her to put them in a can and bury them in the back yard but I would probably display the behavior of a truffle hog nosing them up from the ground.

They are definitely a gateway cookie to insulin. I watched what ingredients went into the cookies and know they are not exactly

health food. But it is like the meat I eat. It is delicious but I don't want to watch how it is processed. Once I did try a vegan cookie and I had my doubts as to whether it was really part of any food group and could have used a tongue scraper after that. I have to say though, in spite of the cookie conspiracy, she has my best interests at heart if you'll excuse the pun. The cookies are placed in metal tins instead of zip lock bags. When I glide into the kitchen under the cover of darkness as silently as possible to liberate a few cookies, opening those cans sounds like a drum solo.

The conversation goes something like this; "What are you eating? NOTHING. Are you eating a cookie? (PAUSE) You aren't having another cookie are you? JUST ONE. Haven't you had enough? WELL, YOU'RE MAKING THEM. You don't have to eat them all." And so it goes.

How to Entertain Kids Over Winter Break

s it December 22nd yet? There are many things that I’m looking forward to during the week between Christmas and New Year’s like not packing school lunches, not hustling everyone out the door by 8:15, not checking everyone’s homework folder and not adhering to a schedule. Can you relate?

While this all sounds great in theory, your kids might be bored by December 26th and start wondering what the plan is.

Staying in pajamas all day playing with toys is fun, but gets old after about a day when everyone starts fighting. Here are some ideas to fill the week.

Get crafty! Head over to Ocean City where you can drop in at Glazed Over Studios to paint pottery or Peace of Wood to create a wooden design. You should also check the local craft stores like Michael’s and AC Moore as they sometimes have good free craft workshops that kids enjoy.

The holiday break is a perfect time to find an age-appropriate service learning

activity to do as a family. Jewish Family Services in Margate sends out a monthly newsletter with great opportunities like helping with mailings or helping to unload food deliveries to stock their pantry shelves. This time of year can be lonely for people in retirement communities so you could call and ask if you could visit with residents and brighten their day by reading to them or doing an activity with them. We have done this at Seashore Gardens in Galloway and not only do the residents love it, but my children do too.

I am planning to unplug for the holiday week and enjoy spending time with my family going on new adventures. Take the time to relax and create new memories with the ones you love. I hope you have a safe and happy holiday break with your family!

Italian New Year Eve Traditions

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone so quickly.

I keep asking myself where has the time gone? I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling this way and believe many Shore Local readers also feel this way.

As with everyone who has had career in the food industry, I’ve spent my New Year’s Eves working, either in big party venues like the casino parties in their large ballrooms or in smaller venues like my own restaurants. But when I was growing up in Italy, which is a very superstitious country, we had many ways to celebrate New Year's Eve, known as the Vigilia, Capodanno or Festa di San Silvestro.

Italians celebrate New Year’s

with a cenone (big feast), often featuring foods symbolic of wishes for the coming year, washed down with plenty of Prosecco or spumante ("sparkling wine"). Pork plays a role in many New Year’s feasts around the world, and in Italy it is the star of the show. Italian folklore suggests that eating sausage before midnight is a good omen for the New Year because sausage made with pig’s trotters (pig’s feet) contains a high fat content which symbolizes abundance.

Some think that the custom of serving pork comes from the pig’s habit of rooting forward, symbolizing our intention to mark the New Year with a renewed commitment to moving forward ourselves. When pork is eaten with coin-shaped lentils, which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity, the diner’s financial outlook for the next year is supposed to be better than the previous one.

New Year’s Day dinner historically features zampone e lenticchie (pig’s trotters and lentils). Zampone is a hollowed-out, deboned pig’s foot stuffed with sausage, then cut into rounds after cooking and served with lentils. A variation on this is cotechino e lenticchie, a big, fat sausage from

Modena that contains the meat of the trotter and is sliced into coin-shaped rounds after cooking; it is served with lentils and mashed potatoes.

In the past several years cotechino has been imported into the United States, but you only could find it at high-end Italian restaurants in New York City. But, if you want to try it here in South Jersey, I have it available at Eat @ Joe’s in EHT. I serve it on a grilled sandwich roll with caramelized onions, spicy bagnetto verde sauce (a pesto-like sauce made with parsley) and provolone cheese. Mama Mia, it’s delicious.

In the Piemonte where I grew up, grains of rice represent coins, because rice “grows” or increases in volume in the pot, the way we would like our wealth to multiply in the new year. So, we always included risotto in bianco with our meal.

Dessert is dried fruit and red grapes. It’s said to take great willpower to conserve some grapes from the harvest until New Year’s Eve, indicating that everyone at the table will hopefully be wise and frugal with their newfound wealth.

One fun custom that starts right after Christmas is that stores start hanging red undergarments in their windows because both men and women are supposed to wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve to bring luck in the coming year. And since red is the color of fertility, those hoping to conceive in the following year also wear red.

To banish previous bad luck, particularly in southern Italy, there’s an attitude of out with the old and in with the new, and in the old days old pots and pans, clothes or any old and

unwanted items were thrown from upstairs windows. Today you’re more likely to see people smashing plates and glasses on the ground to drive away evil spirits.

All Italians love fireworks! And New Year’s Eve celebrations, like in almost every other country, are celebrated with amazing fireworks to drive the evil spirits away.

Finally, although I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions, I really am going to try to slow down a bit in 2019 and as they say, “take time to smell the roses!”

A Year in Review The First Annual Light Awards

s I look back on 2018, I have to say it was a good year!

Here are my top picks: The Cooperative Economics Award goes to Kia Handy-Mickel for her Facebook group BOVA. The acronym stands for Business Owners Vendors & Artists. BOVA is the hottest and most supportive group I have come across on facebook for business owners and people interested in business. Everyday members post questions for group feedback and insight, and Kia (a local business owner) herself product tests and reviews the merchandise of her group members.

The Light Community Advocates go our own Cindy Ferstch and Jerry Ryan. These two work full time to provide for their families. However, they also work second shift raising money and awareness to support families of people with autism. These 2 deserve an actual award.

The Community Activist goes to Steve Young of The AC Peacekeepers.

Young has been known in the area for taking the fight for justice to those in power. Many may not know that in his role with the peacekeepers he fights just as hard to prevent violent interaction on all fronts.

The Best New DJ goes to KJ Butta.

The AC/SJ area is stacked with great DJ’s. No one has broken through on my radar in years. This year KJ Butta

came into earsight and he’s a winner.

No time to get into every award we should. nother year comes to an end. Out with the old. In with the new.

It’s customary this time of year to layout your goals and aspirations for the new year. But for a majority of us, most of those goals fall by the wayside in two to three weeks. So, what can you and I do to increase the odds that we will stick with our goals in 2019? I suggest one step you can take that has the potential to dramatically increase your odds.

We’ve all heard that experience is the best teacher. But my mentor John Maxwell says that’s not the case. Actually, it’s evaluated experience that is the best teacher. You and I can experience all kinds of things and not learn a thing. I’m sure, like me you’ve said to yourself a time or two, “Why did I do THAT again? What was I thinking?” You weren’t and that’s the problem. So, as 2018 draws to a close, I suggest you take some time over the next couple of days and look back on this year. It might help if you pull out a piece of paper and write down the major and maybe not so major events of this year along with the decisions you’ve made

this year. My hope is that we can spend more time sharing in 2019.

Murphy/Mazzeo & Armato Have Chosen Illegals over Veterans ...

And, an Important Review of "The Tytler Cycle" from 1787

ew Jersey is turning more and more like California with each passing day.

See if you can believe this one? In the last issue, we discussed that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has allocated $ 2.1 million for illegal aliens to receive free stuff in order stay here. Yes, hard-earned taxpayer dollars are being given to illegals to be able to remain here, illegally. It's madness.

What I didn't know until after our filing deadline was that Murphy, with the help of fellow Democrats like Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato accomplished this by directly ripping off our United States Veterans.

Here's a real life case in point. On Saturday, December 8, 2018, The Brigantine Elks were expecting three busloads of wonderful Veterans to arrive for their annual viewing party to watch the iconic United States Army vs. United States Navy college football game.

However, when the first bus arrived ... everyone was left wondering ... where are the other two buses? It was only then that they learned that there was no bus # 2 and # 3 arriving.

The reason: a targeted budget cut.

Yes, you're reading this correctly. The Murphy/Mazzeo/Armato Team took the money from our Veterans transportation budget and instead gave it to illegals, who shouldn't be here in the first place.

This is beyond upsetting. It's a disgrace and outrage beyond words. But, don't worry, the Democrats knew that we would all eventually find out about their filthy scheme, so they already had a cover story ready to go.

Their story is that they didn't cut the Veteran's Transportation budget.

They simply shifted the money to the "General Fund."

In other words, they want you to believe that they didn't choose illegals over our own Veterans.They simply transferred the money. But, the proof is in the "pudding." Once the money was moved from the Veteran's transportation line item ... the Democrats first move was to cheat our Veterans.

I have interviewed many people with direct knowledge of this annual party for our Veterans. The truth is, they don't get out much. This is an event that they look forward to every year. Yet, because the Murphy Democrats choose illegals over American citizens at almost every turn ... twothirds of our honorable veterans were denied the opportunity to attend the viewing party event.

Bob was waiting for the three busloads of Veterans to arrive to the Brigantine Elks Club event. He found out in real time what had occurred.

Bob spent time connecting all of the dots. He spoke with State Senator Chris Brown staffer Tom Suthard (a very good man) about this outrage that had occurred.

Suthard was able to confirm that the July budget, (which Mazzeo and Armato) supported, cut the Veteran's Transportation budget and the Veterans Memorial fund and they put the $ 2.1 million in the fund for illegal freebies.

So, the next time you hear me or anyone else say that the Democrats choose illegals over Veterans and other United States citizens ... it's not spin. It's not a lie. It's the truth.

It really is time for every veterans organization and other like-minded Americans to effectively join together and put a stop to this and other outrages that are presenting occurring.

The American people have far more power than they actually believe.

Pay close attention to what's happening in California. Because New Jersey is following each radical socialist Democrat scheme ... hook, line and sticker.

California is presently weighing a new tax on every text message sent.

The "revenue" generated will be given to illegals, so that they can have free cellular telephones and other freebies.

And, get this ... the lunatic California Democrats are not happy with a new text message tax. They want to retroactively apply it going back five years. Yes, a new tax that will have a start date of 2013!

Incoming California Governor Gavin Newsome has already promised a new, massive property tax increase.

He wants to also make it retroactive from five years ago.

California has achieved a super majority in both their upper and lower houses of the state legislature. The Republican minority has absolutely no power to stop any of these radical moves.

New Jersey is currently on a path towards the same reality. For example, it wasn't that many years ago that Republicans had the majority of United States Congressmen. As of this January, 2019, Congressman Chris Smith is the only Republican left in the New Jersey delegation. 11 out of 12 will now be Democrats.

Should this course follow with the state legislature, Democrats will have a super majority; which would leave Republicans helpless.

One bright spot is New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney. He's not radical. He's presently the "gate keeper" at the door, or, New Jersey would have plunged even further radically left than we already have endured.

What the socialist Democrats fail to recognize is that when you keep regressively taxing your hard-working citizens, you can expect that the guaranteed end result will be a continued migration of the tax base.

It's the road map for ultimate economic collapse. This is not a theory, it's an inevitability. It's already happening. New Jersey is presently leading the nation in terms of people fleeing for fairer taxed states.

business, which provide the various services required for people to move out of California to other states like Florida, South Carolina and Texas.

Let me close by reminding you about "The Tytler Cycle." Tytler was a Scottish history professor, who introduced his theory in 1787.

I became very interested in this theory about 30 years ago. I didn't know then if it was actually true or just some wild opinion. However, please note the following; it goes like this: The Tytler theory sets forth a cycle that every "Democracy" has experienced throughout history. The average length of a Democracy is no more than 200 years. To date, it has never failed; except for the United States of America; which is the first to go 242 years without entirely collapsing.

Here's why: These are the stages: You start in "Bondage." Then, there is a "Spiritual Faith" awakening that overcomes a society, which has a thirst for freedom. This requires "Courage" in order to happen. Next is achieving "Liberty." This is always followed by a period of "Abundance," because people have worked hard to earn what they've amassed. This is the high water mark in every Democracy.

What follows, is always a period of decline. "Selfishness" enters the scene. Next is "Complacency," as people take for granted what they have.

Next is "Apathy."

The end is now near, as "Dependence" on the government takes full root, as people now routinely vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. It's very simple. The voters support the candidates who promise the most gifts from the public treasury.

When this stage plays out, we return to Bondage. Every time this Tytler Cycle has played out ... the end result is 100 percent of the time, a return to "Bondage."

Every Democracy in history has been immediately been followed by a Dictatorship. I don't believe that there is any denying that we are currently in the final stage of "Dependence."

That's Stage 7 out of 8.

This stage will end when we run out of "other people's money" to give to the chosen ones. Interesting to note is that The Tytler Theory was written two years before George Washington became the first President of The United States.

Addendum: Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak and Bruce Land voted against the budget that diverted the veteran funding.

I

t’s the time of year we all look on to the future of living a healthier lifestyle. But at what cost? In my 22 years in private practice I don't believe there a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition and weight loss. What works for one person may not work out for another. That's why I believe it's so critical to listen to your body to determine what feels best and is sustainable for you, despite how popular an approach may be, from juice cleanses and detoxes to vegan diets. Nutritional balance and structure is key for long term success. “Diets” are just for “now. ” I would like to give my take on one strategy that is currently trending, intermittent fasting, I have seen very mixed results. Many men, particularly those who struggle with excess weight and conditions like diabetes or metabolic syndrome, have reported positive results with this semi-fasting approach. But for many women I've counseled, any type of fasting it be overnight for 16 hours every night, or capping calories at 500 two days a week has seriously backfired. If you are thinking of giving it a try, here are a few potential unwanted effects to consider.

Limiting food intake to just eight hours each day or severely restricting calories a few days a week are two popular fasting approaches. I've seen both lead to intense cravings, preoccupation with food, and rebound binge eating, particularly for women. Some who attempted to cut off eating after 4pm (with the intention of eating again at 8am) have told me that after hours of lingering thoughts about food, or watching other family members eat, they just couldn't take it anymore, and wound up raiding the kitchen and eating far more than they would have on a typical night. Others, who attempt to eat no more than 500 calories a day two non-consecutive days each week, often begin daydreaming on fasting days about what they can eat on non-fasting days, and end up eating decadent goodies more often, like baked goods, pizza, chips, and ice cream. The lesson: even if this tactic has worked miracles for a friend, co-worker, or family member, if it leaves you in a food frenzy, it's not the best approach for you.

Trying to get an understanding, I've tried intermittent fasting myself, and like clients and others I have talked to, it interfered with my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. This effect can not only wreak havoc with daytime energy, but a

plethora of studies have shown that sleep length and quality are strongly associated with weight control. Too little sleep has been shown to increase hunger, up cravings for sweet and fatty foods, reduce the desire to eat healthy foods like veggies, and trigger excessive eating overall and weight gain . For these reasons, I don't believe that fasting is an optimal strategy for many people. In fact, some clients have told me they got out of bed at 3:00 am after waking up, and you guessed it, wound up either eating, drinking alcohol, or both, in order to fall asleep, not a good recipe for weight loss or wellness.

As a nutritionist, one of my biggest pet peeves with fasting is that I've seen it compromise overall nutrition by limiting the intake of veggies, fruit, even lean protein and healthy fats, which are strongly tied to keeping metabolism revved, boosting satiety, and reducing inflammation all critical for weight control. I think this is especially the case when people become focused on calorie counts rather than food quality . If you do decide to try intermittent fasting, or even a modified version, make every morsel count by sticking with naturally nutrient rich whole and fresh foods rather than processed foods .

Unfortunately, fasting does not trigger your body to break down only your fat reserves. While that would make weight loss so much easier, metabolism is a bit more complex. Your body burns a combination of fat and carbohydrates and after about six hours or so, when carbohydrates are not being consumed and your body's back up stores in your liver have been depleted, you begin to convert some lean tissue into carbohydrate. The ratio of how much fat to muscle you lose may vary depending on your body composition, protein intake, and activity level, but again, this is where I've seen women and men experience different results.

Research shows that in postmenopausal women, a higher protein intake is needed in order to lose less muscle mass (not offset the effect completely), but many women tell me that when they fast they crave carbs, which may lead to a loss of muscle while maintaining body fat, the opposite of their intended goal. Bottom line: again, think through what feels good and in sync with your body's needs, and remember, sustainability is key!

lvis Presley was regarded as one of the most influential entertainers of all time. Presley had starred in at least 34 films, recorded countless albums and performed in front of sold out audiences far and wide.

Ask John Jeffries of Mays Landing, and he will tell you everything there is to know about Elvis.

John showcased his most prized possessions, everything ranging from a framed Elvis photo collage to rare vintage cards, even a collection of movies and rare studio recordings. He was even sporting his Elvis belt buckle.

Elvis was born in 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he lived with his family for 13 years prior to moving to Memphis. In August 1953, he sang his first recording with Sun Records. Two years later, Presley made his television debut on the country variety show Louisiana Hayride and performed onstage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

On March 23, 1956, Elvis’s first full-length studio album was released under the RCA label. His appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show garnered more than 60 million viewers across the country.

In 1958, Presley was drafted into the Army. During his stint in the military, he was assigned to basic training at Fort Hood, served in the 3rd Armored Division in West Germany, and was promoted to sergeant within two years. Prior to being discharged, his plane stopped just north of Glasgow, Scotland, to refuel. This would be the one, and only, time Elvis would ever step foot onto British soil.

Upon his return, Presley would go on to star in major motion picture roles, such as Viva Las Vegas, Double Trouble and Kid Galahad. On the Hollywood screen, Elvis’ movies in the 60’s not only featured his

music. They also hosted co-stars like Lola Albright, Gary Lockwood, Bill Bixby, Nancy Sinatra and Mary Tyler Moore.

Last month, John traveled to New York City with Mark Hills to take part in an open audition for Season 14 of America’s Got Talent. Performing as “The Elvis Brothers,” they sang an entire set of Elvis’ songs acapella, from Hound Dog to Love Me Tender.

John and Mike will find out if they get the call to go back for the America’s Got Talent tapings early next year. Season 14 of the show won’t air until this summer, but we wish the Elvis Brothers the very best of luck moving forward.

In speaking about Elvis’s life, John says “the man left a legacy. His spirit and his music will life forever.”

Holiday Day Trips in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

ike most who live year-round at the Jersey Shore, I have relatives in many nearby states, some of whom would often come to visit, and some who I grew up visiting every year. But whether you will be looking to engage guests with winter activities on the

coast or looking for things to do while staying with family in Pennsylvania I have a few suggestions for historic sites that you might include on your itinerary.

If you are staying home and wel-

coming family from afar, you should strongly consider taking them down to Cape May to the Emlen Physick Estate, where the Mid-Atlantic Center for Arts & Humanities currently offer Victorian yuletide themed tours of the 1879 homesite.

Moreover, this year the staff put together a special “Old Fashioned Christmas” exhibit in the adjacent Carriage House, while visitors can also choose to take a walking tour (or via a trolley

if you prefer) to see Holiday Lights throughout the neighborhood.

Slightly closer to home, though much more off the beaten path, is an innovative museum in an unexpected location. The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage, housed in the 1896 Brotherhood Synagogue, opened in 2003 as an independent non-profit, but has been affiliated with Stockton since 2011. The extension

building Stockton completed in 2013 to hold courses in Cape May County, which is modern in every way right up to the green roof, also provides a place for community education on vital historical knowledge, as since 2005 the museum has been the County’s designated Holocaust Teaching Site.

The museum itself consists of two parts, the restored upper floors where religious services are still held periodically, and the transformed basement

of the Brotherhood Hall that had once been the site of “busy round-the-clock” activities from “kindergarten in the morning” and “Hebrew classes after school” to “club meetings in the evenings” and “holiday parties,” according to one panel of the exhibit’s signage. Not only does the display discuss the history behind Woodbine’s early Jewish farming settlements and its transformation into Cape May County’s most industrialized and most ethnically diverse community, but the floor has been replaced with a street map of the town like at the Philadelphia History Museum.

As the Allan Davis Public History Fellow while a graduate student at Temple I had the chance to spend a year working at the Philadelphia History Museum, during which time I had lots of opportunities to explore the areas around Independence Hall, which also offer a myriad of options for an edutaining day trip if you are visiting family in southeast Pennsylvania. One surefire hit is the new Museum of the American Revolution, which I opted to visit the day I received my doctorate, making it quite memorable. Perhaps the best aspects of the museum, aside from the ambiance of Washington’s Headquarters Tent, are the ways that the displays show the diversity of experiences on various sides of the political divide at the time as well as how independence proved problematic for African-Americans and Native-Americans. ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson MEDICINAL MARIJUANA FOR BABY BOOMERS MEDICINAL MARIJUANA VS. RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA VS. STREET MARIJUANA What is the smart choice to make when considering where to purchase cannabis?

First, let’s look at dispensaries in NJ. MM (medicinal marijuana) may only be prescribed to patients by a physician for medical reasons or conditions.

Unlike regular prescriptions, there are no paper prescriptions, and is prescribed online only. The cannabis found in dispensaries is grown in that particular dispensary. The ingredients of the product must be clearly noted on packaging and it would indicate % of THC and CBD and perhaps Terpenes found in the package. The state government will periodically test the product for accuracy of information and this is so that you will know the purity of what you purchase.

Marijuana is not allowed to be transported across state lines.

It can only be grown indoors in NJ. One will need a MM card to make a purchase and therefore should have a qualifying diagnosis of at least one of about 16 currently approved conditions.

The purchase amount is limited to up to two ounces. The maximum THC percentage is limited to a large percentage.

The cost of the product may seem prohibitively high but there are no extra charges. (as there are more dispensaries in NJ the cost should come down.)

Only NJ residents may purchase MM. Currently some residents are allowed a 20% discount on product and up to an 80% discount on the cost of your card.

NJ physicians provide users of MM classes or instructions on the safe and most efficient ways to use MM. Physicians are likely to take the time to explain the use of medicinal marijuana, rules and safety. Physician will steer you towards the correct species for your particular problem (Sativa, Indica or CBD oil from Hemp) Now, Let’s look at recreational marijuana and its uses. Of course, recreational marijuana is not legal in NJ yet. But let’s talk about it anyway.

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA Cost. It will cost more than medicinal marijuana and likely due to a type of surcharge (currently, perhaps 10% - low compared to other states). And a retail tax leading to an average cost of about 27% more than medicinal. My estimates are probably low.

Purchase amount and strength. As in other states, recreational marijuana will be limited to a much lower quantity per transaction. This makes sense because if visitors do not use all the purchased product, will they be allowed to leave the state with product? (Think federal laws) So they should not purchase the same amount as mm allowed per purchase. But if they are residents should they have the same restrictions on amount as out of state visitors? The strength will also be lower in recreational. That is, the THC concentration will be lower as compared to mm. The only method of controlling this, in my opinion, is by limiting the choices of the strain that recreational users can purchase.

same (in the flowers and concentrates) but there are strains of mm with genetically very high THC percentages, but marijuana genetic variations with lower amounts of THC naturally.

tions, delusions, confusion, aggression, neurological effects, etc. Not good to ingest. Heroin (and maybe Fentanyl) lead to severe sleepiness, lethargy or relaxation. Opioids as we know can lead to breathing problems and overdose.

Embalming fluid, cocaine, Laundry detergent (improves the smell) and LSD, Just about anything that increases the appeal of the product being sold. Generally, if your marijuana does not provide any psychoactive or pain relieving or anxiety or sleep benefits / effects then you may be smoking inert material only. If there is too much psychoactivity seemingly uncharacteristic of marijuana, your product may have dangerous drugs added.

Medicinal and recreational bought from the street (meaning someone procured legal medicinal and recreational product to sell.) is commonly obtained through mail from states where it is legal for medical and/or recreational (or from NJ MM patients) However I believe now that NJ has its own medicinal and soon recreational products (maybe) the need to participate in this activity will no longer be necessary and cease.

GENERAL DIFFERENCES AMONGST MEDICINAL, RECREATIONAL, AND STREET MARIJUANA

Purity. Recreational should have the same purity as medicinal because it is sold out of a government sanctioned business or facility. Recreational would also be grown in NJ. Prescribing. A card may not be needed. Purchasers will be 21 years old or older and likely will need proof of ID. It’s likely be required to be smoked indoors. This is an interesting point because if one is not a resident- where will they be allowed to use it? On the beach? On a boat? Maybe we will build or use some of the old casino’s for marijuana smokers?

What about a coffee house -like in Holland? They would have to be built and serviced.

STREET MARIJUANA This should not be such a category, but it is.

Lacing. This is a big concern with street marijuana. MM and recreational marijuana do quality control and assurance on their products. This isn’t done on street marijuana. This means that what your purchasing may have contaminants or adulterants. To make the THC stronger in the oils or in extracts, Butane may be used and there may be residue of it in your purchase. It is harmful to you. Heavy metals found in the soil where marijuana is grown can leach into the plant.

Heavy metals are harmful to you. Pesticides and fertilizers can be used to make the potency stronger and plants to grow more robustly can end up in the marijuana too. Pesticides are not good to combust and be inhaled or drawn into the lungs.

Glass shards may be found in the marijuana made into the street edibles. Obviously not good for you. Fungus and Bacteria (not intentional) grow on the plant due to poor storage of the product. Again, not good to consume.

Chemical Lacing. PCP is used to add more psychoactive properties to the marijuana. PCP can lead to hallucina-

Medicinal marijuana will be stronger than recreational in most cases. Street marijuana may be just as strong as medicinal, but you may not be able to find out the strain or the ratio of THC to CBD until you try it (and then maybe not). Or street marijuana may be weaker than the medicinal. It may not help your problem. For decades now, persons have been buying street marijuana. It has been known in the past to be laced. Nothing new here. Just that now there are some powerful substances to lace it with.

Medicinal marijuana is assuredly free of lacing. No contaminants or drugs mixed. No fungi or molds. The same for recreational marijuana. All street marijuana may not be laced. But can you tell or are you going to risk it.

Cost differs too. Medicinal may end up being the least expensive. Recreational may end up being the most expensive. Street? Anything goes. Most users of recreational and street marijuana only want to get high, so the details may not be so important. It should be different with medicinal because these users are using it not to get high but to treat something medical. Your allowed to purchase higher quants of medicinal, and speculatively a lot less recreational and presumably as much as you want street marijuana (which is not a very smart activity to be involved in these days of very strong designer illicit drugs). If you are unsure of what you purchased, don’t use it or maybe return it or complain about its quality to the dispensary.

tlantic County residents donated 18,625 lbs. of non-perishable goods to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, through ACUA’s 28th Annual Holiday Food Drive.

The drive, held annually during the first two weeks of December, provides residents an easy and convenient way to help those in need. Residents place donations at the curb on their regular recycling day, and ACUA’s collection crews retrieve and deliver donations to the food bank where they are distributed to local families in need.

“Thank you to the many residents that contributed to this year’s food drive,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “We’re happy to support this cause and provide the opportunity for our community to help those in need.

The donations will make a difference in the lives of struggling families this holiday season. This continues to be the most important community program we offer, and we’re incredibly grateful to all those that participate,” said Dovey.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, provides the donated food to more than 300 partner charities for distribution throughout Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. These charities include emergency food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other charitable feeding programs. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the local community and the work of our partner, ACUA,” said Renate Taylor, Development Officer, Southern Branch. “Your donations are not only heartwarming, but truly make an impact on our efforts to feed the many hungry families in our area. Thank you!”

The 18,625 lbs. of food collected during this year’s drive brings the total collected throughout ACUA’s 28 years of offering the program to more than 853,878 lbs.

I first had the chance to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania several years ago, when the memorial itself and parts of the site were completed, but while recently

visiting my grandmother I wanted to go back to see the museum that was still being built when I was there, as well as the newest part of the site-a Tower of Voices--dedicated in September. The chimes for the bell tower are still being installed and when completed in spring will be the final part of the National Park site that was effectively established right after the plane crashed, as various spontaneous memorials sprung up.

These temporary tributes including stuffed animals and sports gear are now part of a permanent exhibit.
