A Surprise Snowfall Hits The Shore

Weather with Nor'easter Nick

B

By Nick Pittman

Wow! The first snow of the season for folks east of Hammonton. Awesome to see... if you’re a snow

lover, of course. Often times I come to you and tell you why a forecast didn’t verify and what went wrong. That’s not the case this time. Outside of a couple small surprises, it pretty much worked out as thought. What we dealt with is called a Norlun Trough. The actual storm was several hundred miles southeast of our region but the inver ted trough extended well northwest of the center and allowed snow to develop in our backyards. These situations are VERY fickle

to nail down but i think we did a good job. My original forecast on Tuesday was for 1-3” to fall, I updated it to 4” along the coast on Wednesday morning. Outside of s few areas that saw slightly higher totals, most fell within range. More snow to come early next week? I’m watching a storm that has potential to pull north along the coast and bring substantial snow to Virginia.

The jury is still out on if we will see any impact from it, but I believe the chance still does certainly exist! NorEaster Nick Pittman Chief Forecaster SNJ Today Channel 4 News NorEasterNick@snjtoday.com P: 609.579.4263 www.snjtoday.com

Belhaven School Helps Others Cozy Up with Kindness By Tammy Thornton

Seventh grade students display blankets they made

making blankets for those in need. Jennifer Parmelee headed up the project, and was so proud of the students that volunteered their time. Mrs. Parmelee, who teaches sixth and seventh grade math at Belhaven School, began the project with a grant she wrote to the Linwood Education Foundation for funds to purchase the material for the project she named, “Cozy Up With Kindness.” Parmelee was named Belhaven’s Staffulty of the Month in October, for her efforts inside and outside of the classroom. Students helped make 73 blankets that will be distributed to: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for foster children; Noogieland, a program dedicated to children affected by cancer; and the Veterans Home in Vineland. Ten blankets were presented to Lori Stranges, Noogieland Program Director, at an assembly held at the school on Friday, November 30th. Jennifer Bernardini, a fifth grade English language arts teacher, is active in coordinating donations for Noogieland and was nominated Belhaven Teacher of the Year in November, 2017. At the as-

This will hang at Noogieland at Gilda’s Club of South Jersey. Ms. Stranges said she was, “blown away by what the staff is teaching the students about generosity, compassion, and sense of community.” In addition to these projects, students also made ribbons promoting breast cancer awareness. These will be sold and proceeds will go to Noogieland. During this day of service, fifth to eighth grade students made cards for area nursing homes, soldiers, and veterans homes. They also made holiday-themed

treats for Noogieland’s holiday party. Students wrapped up their day of community service by raking leaves around the school. Thank you to our teachers for encouraging students to see themselves as an active part of a community that helps others. And thank you to students who happily volunteer their time to benefit those in need. Tammy Thornton is a mom of four, a substitute teacher, and a Sunday school teacher. She is passionate about gardening and cooking, and loves the beach.

Kids from Noogieland enjoy a visit to the Funny Farm. Noogieland is part of Gilda’s Club of South Jersey. It’s a special place created for children and teens affected by cancer in any way. The Noogieland program provides emotional support through age appropriate groups and activities in a caring and fun setting. Hometown Heroes - The Salvation Army Captain Frank & Shana Picciotto and all who volunteer

By Cindy Fertsch

“I

see happiness in the faces of people of all generations donating to the Red Kettle Campaign,” says volunteer Gail Aikens who rings the Salvation Army Red Kettle bell six days a week at the entrance of Boscov's department store in Egg Harbor Township. She volunteers from 11 am to 7 pm and this is her 5th season doing so. “It is a blessing for me to be able to help others,” says Gail, with a smile. The Salvation Army, located on Texas Avenue in Atlantic City offers a haven for those in need, not only in Atlantic City but in the surrounding area as well. It is led by Captains Frank and Shana Piccotto, both of which are ordained Pastors. Imagine being hungry or home-

The history behind some beloved Christmas songs

H

oliday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as families decorate their homes. Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there's no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there's something for everyone. In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song. 'Silent Night': One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), 'Silent Night,' was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today's version is a slow lullaby, but it's believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time. 'O Holy Night': This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, 'Minuit, chretiens (Midnight, Christians).' Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Michael Crawford, and Lea Michele, have performed 'O Holy Night.'

'Silver Bells': Now a Christmas classic, 'Silver Bells' originally was written for the Bob Hope film, 'The Lemon Drop Kid.' Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song 'Tinkle Bell,' but his wife dissuaded him from using the word 'tinkle.' 'White Christmas': Irving Berlin believed his song 'White Christmas' would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it. 'Jingle Bells': Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, 'Jingle Bells' really was written for Thanksgiving. It's also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont,

the song's author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts. 'Do You Hear What I Hear': Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and 'Do You Hear What I

Heare' is now a staple of holiday celebrations. 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town': James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. 'The Christmas Song': This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Torm'. It's usually subtitled 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' The song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole's rendition of the song is among the more popular versions.

Cookie Swap 101 By Marci Lutsky

S

o you want to host a cookie swap. What a fun idea! Can you just tell everyone to show up on a certain date with cookies and hope for the best? Unfortunately the answer is no. Cookie swaps are a really fun way to gather friends during the holiday season and swap cookies to give as gifts, but they do require a fair amount of planning and ground rules. To host the best cookie swap this holiday season, follow these basic rules for a no-stress gathering your friends will enjoy! The first thing to consider is when you will hold the cookie swap. Most cookie swaps I have attended have been just for women which is a really fun girls night out or moms night out during the busy holiday season. Women can unwind over a glass of wine and appetizers while sampling sweet homemade goodies. If you want to include kids (which my kids would just love) or families, you may want to consider scheduling it for during the day or early evening. Either way, you want to give guests as much time as possible to mark their calendars and plan what to bring. How many cookies should each person bring?

Two to three dozen is a good rule of thumb. You want each person to bring enough so that everyone leaves with a good sampling of each cookie plus you may want to display some of each cookie at the swap so people can taste them. You should set up an easy invitation for people to view and comment with what cookie they will be making. This will eliminate too many duplicates. It is unlikely to happen, but you don’t want everyone showing up with snowball or gingerbread cookies. My preferred way to set up an invitation is through a Facebook event. This only works if everyone is on Facebook. Other ways to invite people are through a text message or an online invitation site like Evite. Here are some other details to keep in mind. As the hostess, you can either provide cute containers for everyone to tote cookies home in or you can ask people to bring their own containers.

You can buy really cute inexpensive ones at the local craft stores or just use regular storage containers. You may want to ask people to bring enough copies of their recipes for everyone to take one home. My recipe binder is filled with cookie swap recipes that I frequently refer to. This is also useful in case anyone has food allergies. Make sure you have a big table set up for everyone to display their cookies on and you may also want to create cute little cards in front of each plate to display the cookie names. In my opinion the most important decision involving a cookie swap is what kind of cookie to make. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something you can easily make in bulk and is pretty as well as tasty. Feel free to peruse my blog for various cookie recipes. My latest and favorite cookie recipe is for white chocolate lavender biscotti. These are a show stopper but I have to warn you, they are addictive and you should definitely make extra. Happy cookie making and best wishes for a happy holiday season!

Lavender White Chocolate Biscotti Ingredients:

▶3 ▶ cups all-purpose flour ▶¾ ▶ cup granulated sugar ▶¼ ▶ cup light brown sugar ▶¼ ▶ teaspoon salt ▶2 ▶ teaspoons baking powder ▶½ ▶ cup white chocolate chips ▶1▶ teaspoon dried lavender ▶½ ▶ cup vegetable or canola oil ▶3 ▶ eggs ▶2 ▶ teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Sift the flour, sugars, salt and baking powder together into a large bowl. If you don’t have a sieve, you can whisk them together. Stir in the white chocolate chips and lavender. Set aside. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the oil, eggs and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir until combined. Knead the dough a few times using your hands until it comes together. Shape half the dough into a log about 10 inches long and 3 inches wide. Place the log on the baking sheet and repeat with the second half of the dough. Bake the dough for about 30 minutes. Allow the logs to cool for 15 minutes and reduce the oven temperature to 300. Slice the logs diagonally about ½ inch thick. Place the pieces back on the baking sheet, cut side down, for 10 minutes. Flip halfway through. The biscotti should feel slightly crisp and will crisp up more as they cool. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

A Very Special Night With Foreigner

The Double Vision, Now And Then Tour, presented a celebration concert with all current and original band members, featuring two great bands for one unforgettable night.

F

oreigner justif iably is looked upon as one of the most popular rock bands still touring. They have produced sixteen Top 30 hits and 10 multi-platium albums including hits such as “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” and “Feels Like The First Time,” The band continues to tour they now have album sales of more than 75 million. With a track record of hits like that described above, which is the envy of many

groups that are still providing music today, it was no wonder that the Etess Arena at Hard Rock Atlantic City was filled to capacity Friday night, November 30, 2018. As the lights dimmed the crowd rose to its feet and began applauding even before the band came out on stage. The thirteen song set list

included all of Foreigners hits that their ardent fans came to hear. The audience sounds of approval throughout the evening was as continuous as the music from the stage. The first hour of the show was the current group members of the band. At the end of the set, lead singer Kelly Hansen announced that they were going to, “ Do something we are only doing 4 times this tour and this is one of them.” The current members of the band left the stage and a few seconds later the original members of Foreigner appeared on stage

and proceeded to play. At the conclusion of the original members set, the much awaited encore began. Foreigner original band members, singer Lou Gramm, drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, guitarist Ian McDonald and bassist Rick Wills came together with the current band members of Foreigner, guitarists Mick Jones, Tom Gimbel and Bruce Watson, singer Kelly Hansen, bassist Jeff Pilson, keyboardist Michael Bluestein and drummer Chris Frazier, to create a special and very memorable evening. With the entire group together they all began to play one of Foreigners biggest hits, “I Want To Know What Love is,” to the shear joy of the audience who were all on their feet cheering and singing loudly. The entire group finished the night when they played “Hot Blooded” which brought on an even

louder crescendo of approval from the legion of Foreigner followers. Beginning in 1976, Foreigner’s debut album produced the songs that everyone loved then and still love today, “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice” and “Long, Long Way From Home.” The album ”Double Vision” followed, as did a string of hits like “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” Those songs gave the band’s next album, their 4th, an impressive run at #1 on the Billboard chart. For-

eigner’s #1 global hit,” I Want To Know What Love Is.” came from album #5 “Agent Provocateur“ which was right after the their record breaking hit, “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” Foreigners sales were celebrated in Business Insider for hitting the Top 40 among the Best Selling Music Artists of All Time. The Beatles were recognized as #1. However, Foreigner came in ahead of Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. All photos by Donald B Kravitz

Sensory Friendly Santa at the Hamilton Mall By Cindy Fertsch

Many children with special needs struggle with sensory integration challenges. That means that ordinary things that we may take for granted, such as crowds,

music playing, bright lights, textures and more, can overwhelm a fragile sensory system creating an unpleasant experience for the child, and their entire family. With rates of autism soaring to 1 in 34 children in New Jersey, it was time for Santa Claus to make some accommodations to ensure that a visit with Santa is a positive experience, for all. In recent years, malls across the country have increasingly been offering Sensitive Santa or Sensory Friendly Santa time for families with special needs. But it was a Grandmother that first brought Sensory Santa to fruition in Atlantic County. She reached out to Crystal Rodriguez, the marketing manager, at the Hamilton Mall. “I was not aware of the need, but once I was informed, I knew I had to do something,” said Rodriguez. “We pride ourselves on including everyone in all of our events. We never want to leave anyone out.” That was last year. Rodriguez reacted immediately and added two Sensory Friendly Santa times. “Both were very well attended and the parents really appreciated it,” said Rodriguez. When Easter time rolled around, specific times were set aside for Sensory Friendly visits with the Easter Bunny. And now, this holiday season, they have added

How can I stop the sugar? By Nancy Adler

W

e all want to stop the sugar, but how - especially around the holiday season! Try to remember the empty calories from added sugars in desserts, some drinks and candy can lead to weight gain and spikes in blood glucose levels. Keeping tabs on how much sugar you’re swallowing is an important part of a hearthealthy lifestyle, especially if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Sugar provides 16 percent of the calories of a typical American diet, which corresponds to about 80 grams or 20 teaspoons of sugar based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Decreasing your sugar intake can help you lose weight, better control your blood sugar levels, whether you have diabetes or not, and reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases. Sugar can have an addictive effect and giving it up can induce short-term side effects that usually subside

within a few days or week if your stick to your diet. Most of the side effects that you can experience when decreasing your sugar intake are positive. Within a few days, you should start sleeping better, have more stable energy levels throughout the day and experience improvements in your immune system. If your triglycerides levels were high, a low-sugar diet can quickly lower these levels back in the normal healthy range to help you keep your heart disease risk as low as possible. Although these short-time side effects can be felt within a few days to a few weeks, they will last as long as you stay on your sugar-restricted diet. I always like to share with my clients a few tips such as starting with tossing the table sugar (white and brown), syrup, honey and molasses. Cut back on the amount of sugar added to things you eat or drink regularly like cereal, pancakes, coffee or tea. Try cutting the usual amount of sugar you add by half and wean down from there . Next say bye - bye to soda once and for all . Water is best, but if you want something sweet to drink or are trying to lose weight, diet drinks can be a better choice than sugary drinks. For a burst of natural sugar , choose fruit canned in water or natural juice.

Avoid fruit canned in syrup, especially heavy syrup. Drain and rinse in a colander to remove excess syrup or juice. I suggest adding fruits instead of adding sugar to cereal or oatmeal, try fresh fruit (bananas, cherries or strawberries) or dried fruit

(raisins, cranberries or apricots). Time to bake for the kids! When baking cookies, brownies or cakes, cut the sugar called for in your recipe by one-third to one-half. Often you won’t notice the difference. Personally , I choose to use extracts Instead of adding sugar in recipes, use extracts like almond, vanilla, orange or lemon. I really enjoy the flavor without adding extra sugars.

Another great tip is to enhance foods with spices instead of sugar. Try ginger, allspice, cinnamon or nutmeg. Switch out sugar with unsweetened applesauce in recipes (use equal amounts). Limit non- nutritive sweeteners . If you are trying to lose weight, a temporary fix to satisfying your sweet tooth may be with non-nutritive sweeteners. But watch out! Make sure that swapping sugary options for non-nutritive sweeteners now doesn’t lead to eating more later. To minimize uncomfortable side effects and make the transition to your low-sugar diet as easy as possible, drink enough water to prevent mild dehydration. If you are restricting your daily carb intake in addition to cutting sugar, add a bit more natural unrefined sea salt to your diet to alleviate side effects.

The Present of Your Presence

By Jeff Whitaker

T

he month of December for many revolves around the two “P’s”, parties and presents. At least it seems that way. It’s not long before our calendars get filled up this month with office parties, family get togethers, dinner engagements with friends, even school class parties with our children. Then there is the time we need to set aside to shop whether in person or online searching for the perfect gift. So many choices we have to make. What parties to say yes to; which ones to decline. What presents will be just right? How much to spend; what sends the perfect message to the one on the receiving end? I’m going to suggest a third “P” this Holiday Season. It’s your PRESENCE. Parties are fun, presents are great. But if we participate in both of these “P”’s but don’t bring our ‘presence’ along with us, we’re missing out. So, how do you do this in a practical way? There are hundreds of ways I can think of, but I’m going to focus on just one that will no doubt make the biggest impact of any if we just follow through. Take your focus off of your phone. Make a conscience effort at a party or when you’re

spending one-on-one time with family or friends to ditch the cell phone. Nothing says being present like being fully and completely present and not constantly distracted. When you’re at home gathered with family on the couch to watch a movie, leave the cell phone in the other room. When

2018 SEASON fered is personal, one-on-one meaningful interaction with each other. I’m suggesting that perhaps the best gift you can gift someone this year is the gift of being fully present when you are in their presence. When all is said and done and January rolls around, the food from the parties will be forgotten and the presents will be put on a shelf, but the memory of our presence lives on in the lives of those with whom we spent our time. This Christmas, this Hanukkah, this Holiday Season, give the gift of your PRESENCE.

you’re out to dinner and sitting across from someone you care about, put your phone away. I’m not pretending it’s an easy thing to do. Habits die hard and the fact is that over the last decade adults and now our children have become accustomed to being attached to “the device”. It’s like we can’t go a minute without checking social media, e-mail or playing a game. In the process, what has suf-

cious. Longtime bartender Ulysses greeted us with Mimosa’s while we briefly waited for our table. Jorge, maître d'hôtel, welcomed me with open arms – we go way back and it was wonderful to see him again. It also was wonderful to see our waiters José and Oliver - again friends for years. Restaurant Chef Lisa Fortunato and Executive Sous Chef Charles Wong came out to wish me a happy birthday, and they told us about the new sports betting venue and sushi bar recently opened at Resorts right off the Boardwalk entrance. (I visited the area after brunch and it is amazing, to say the least.) But, back to brunch. What a selection of appetizers, entrées and desserts. To start, we all had steamed shrimp, snow crab fingers, and oysters and clams on the half shell. Then we enjoyed items from the sushi table and the array of salmon, lox, smoked mackerel and eel with all the traditional toppings. The Mediterranean salad bar offered among other things a delightful seafood salad, a wonderful octopus salad, delicious sundried tomatoes, balsamic-marinated cipollini onions, marinated mozzarella balls, prosciutto and slices of cantaloupe and honeydew.

After our antipasti we moved on to entrées: Waygu B risket, Prime Rib, Lamb Chops, an outstanding hot seafood medley with pasta, scallops, shrimp, crab and lobster. The Cashew Chicken with Vegetable Fried Rice was a pleasant surprise and very good. Oh, and we didn’t forget the omelets made to order by another friend, Josefina Lammara. And, yes we still had room for Eggs Benedict. How they were able to prepare them in quantity, hold them in an insulated chafing dish, and have all the yolks come out perfectly runny is tribute to the kitchen staff! Finally we had dessert. Belgian waffles with fresh fruit and whipped cream, bread pudding, crepes, assorted pastries and Danishes, and an huge array of bite-size desserts made inhouse including individual parfaits, macarons (Viva la France), brownies – both chocolate and red velvet – macaroons (yes, those made with coconut), mini fruit tarts, and ice cream kept cold in insulated stylish silver coolers. Just as we were finishing, Pastry Chef Charlene McDaniel and the staff surprised me with a wonderful birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday. The cake was a four layer yellow cake

with a custard filling and a ricotta filling with shaved chocolate, all draped in fondant the colors of the Italian flag. Mama Mia, it was delicious! Capriccio’s has been named the best restaurant in an American casino by USA Today readers, and it deserves that ranking. The decor is stylish, elegant and inviting, with both tables and banquets throughout the room and a fantastic view of the ocean. The staff is without a doubt second to none, and in today’s world it’s wonderful to have such attentive and knowledgeable people attending to you. And I would be remiss not to mention that all employees – known as team members – work hard to make every guest at Resorts feel warm and welcome. Under the leadership and vision of President and CEO Mark Giannantonio, Resorts has become the outstanding property it is today. Kudos to Vice President Food and Beverage Ed Batten, Executive Chef Rob Levinson, and the entire Food and Beverage Staff for their attention to detail and innovative thinking – not just at Capriccio’s but also at Breadsticks, their upscale casual restaurant.

Finally, I want readers to know that Capriccio’s has not changed the price of their brunch in eight years. It’s still $50 per person, plus tax and gratuity. I highly recommend you take advantage of this wonderful restaurant and all it has to offer.

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings he holiday season is in full swing and with it comes good wishes, good food, good drink and among other good times, shopping. While some participate in the event of shopping like it is a competition; a contact sport if you will, I am not a fan of shopping. Much to my wife’s chagrin, I do not like to shop and least of all during this time of year. I know what you’re thinking, “What a Scrooge.” I do have to say, my wife has a knack for gift buying, managing to buy the right gift for any occasion on a consistent basis. As life has played out for thousands of years, there are Hunters and there are Gatherers. This plays out in a number of ways with us and shopping is just one of them. As a shopping hunter, if I need a shirt I go out, stalk the shirt selections, buy one and come home. The same is played out for most things I need to shop for. My wife, as a shopper gatherer takes in the whole environment like a general surveying a battlefield and breaks it down into sections, surgically attacking each one. It is hard enough for her to get me to go off Absecon Island where I have spent the major part of my life. When she would ask if I wanted to go to Hamilton Mall or Consumer Square my question was “Do I need a passport” or “What’s the carry on limit?” Eventually, I realized that she wanted a wingman, some company on her shopping trips and as a dedicated husband, I complied thus joining the ranks of husbands slumped over shopping carts, sitting on benches or racked out in chairs with heads back and mouths open. I have honed this skill into a fine art as we followed the maze of illuminated arrows on the floor at IKEA. Just around practically every turn there was a chair, a recliner, a sofa and even a bed which I was discouraged not to get in and pull up the covers. We recently had to go up Route 73 in Marlton and as traffic became

T

snarled and backed up, I remarked “Don’t these people work? Have they all called out of work to go shopping? It’s midweek in the afternoon.” I just wanted to get back to my little island. It all came to head this week after we went to a large national discount store. After walking up and down the aisles at a glacier’s pace, my eyes locked onto another gentleman who was sharing my fate. His eye roll said it all and we both shook our heads and smiled. I ran into him a couple more times and with the simple nod of recognition, we bonded. Graciously, my wife asked if I would like to walk around by myself so I thankfully took my leave and

started wandering through the store like I was in an airport looking for my departure gate. As the hour ticked, the store became more crowded and the tempo became a bit more frenzied. I witnessed a man and women cussing and screaming at each other to the point where I thought I was going to see some grounding and pounding. People were called to each other across the store while others were eating as they stood in line to checkout. Oh, the humanity. How TV reality show producers have missed the opportunity at these stores is amazing. In closing, I admit I am a shopping ball and chain but with the days before Christmas quickly counting down, there are still people we want to buy for. The question is, can we do this either on our island on online? Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. Decorate for the Holidays from your own Garden

By Tammy Thornton

F

irst impressions are key, and when it comes to the holidays, guests should feel welcome even before they walk through your front door. Greet them with a beautiful planter overflowing with holiday cheer. Urns add sophistication to your porch decor and are versatile—you can arrange them to suit any style. Don’t spend a lot of money to achieve a rich look, just take a walk through your garden with a strong pair of clippers. You don’t need a degree in flower arranging to make your holiday urn or planter look amazing. Look around your garden. Do you have any type of pine or evergreens? Start with larger branches as a base, then fill in with other types of greenery.

If you don’t have access to pine, stop by local businesses selling Christmas trees. Most tree sellers are more than happy to give you the branches they have cut away when preparing the trees. In the cold temperatures of late fall and winter, your display should remain fresh looking through the holidays. You can always add floral foam to the base of your pot or urn, but I’ve

never needed to do so. If your urn is too deep, fill it with the empty plastic pots that you have left from your fall mums. Or, as those Christmas gifts start arriving in the mail, dump the

packing peanuts into your planter for a lightweight filler. If you are fortunate enough to have white birch branches at your disposal, use these as an anchor in your holiday urn. White birch branches evoke that feeling of winter coziness. For me, it’s a matter of nostalgia. My childhood home back in western Pennsylvania had three medium-sized white birch trees near our driveway. I always loved those trees, and seeing that wonderful white bark reminds me of my dad, who passed many years ago. Be mindful of memories and traditions as you decorate. It gives everything a deeper, richer meaning. Often your children start looking forward to these things you do every year. You are giving them the security of tradition without even realizing it. When arranging your decorative urn, remember the principle of “thriller, spiller, filler.” Start with the thriller. This is the tallest part of your decoration. If you found white birch branches, use these, but you

can also simply cut leafless branches from trees in your yard. Paint them red for a striking look, or white for a wintry feel. Once you have these in place, support them with pine and evergreens from your own garden; place some upright, but others horizontally so that they “spill” over the sides of your urn. Next, layer with smaller pine branches for your filler. Use different types of pine and greenery to add interest as well as pine cones and holly. Now time to personalize it. This is the fun part. Create a wintry display by using spray snow from your local hardware store. I like to give the greenery and pine cones a light touch of “snow” and then add homemade snowballs and silver Christmas balls. This style of urn will carry you through the winter well past the holidays. If you want to get in touch with your Scottish side, leave out the snow and add a tartan ribbon and touches of red, such as winterberry sprigs. For a southern feel, add mag-

nolia leaves and artificial sugared fruit picks. Choose a cascading ribbon that complements the style you’ve chosen. Weave white lights into your display and enjoy the peaceful aura of glowing lights. Guests will know that they are about to enter a home that cares about them and is filled with the holiday spirit. For you, after a long day of shopping, pulling into the driveway and seeing the soft hue of white lights will remind you that you’ve reached your haven. Make sure that you don’t let all the preparations of the season get out of control. Let your home be a welcoming place and do your best to spread “Peace on Earth and Good Will Toward Men.”

Toy soldiers, a jewelry box ballerina, and rag dolls all awaken as they dance to Christmas music all masterfully choreographed. While looking around at the audience I couldn’t help but notice how magical this was for the children who were present. After all, wasn’t it all of our fantasies at one time or another for our toys to come to life? And of course, no Christmas show is complete without the big man, Santa himself. In this show, you don’t have to settle for just one Santa because an entire chorus line of jolly Santas dance and entertain the audience. The kids especially love to

watch as Santa wiggles his hips to their favorite Christmas tunes. The host and hostess of the Jingle holiday show not only created a memorable experience for the entire audience, but also sang classic Christmas songs in powerful harmonies that captivated the audience. They inspired audience participation as they traveled through the crowd with their microphones and encouraged those who were in the Christmas spirit to sing along loud and proud. The youngest person in the audience to participate was around 2 years old. Of course, it could have been that the youngster had mistaken the microphone for his pacifier, but nonetheless, I am certain he knew all about the wonders of the holidays.

Jingle, A Magical Holiday Spectacular was created to entertain children and adults alike. Its astonishing stunts, masterful illusions, and Broadway quality skits are exactly what you need to not only get into the holiday spirit but spend a wonderful evening with the ones you love this Christmas season.

Hanukkah's connection to Christmas

By Seth Grossman

T

he 8 day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah began at sunset, the 25th day of the month of Kislev in the Jewish lunar calendar. Normally, Hanukkah takes place closer to Christmas Day, December 25 in the European solar calendar. Li ke Pa s s ove r- E a s te r, Shavuot-Pentacost, and Sukkot-Thanksgiving, the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays are examples of the close connection between Judaism and Christianity. Hanukkah is not mentioned in the Jewish Bible or Old Testament. The Mishnah and Talmud, the next most important books in Judaism barely mention it. They simply tell Jews to light candles for eight days to remember the miracle of a one day supply of pure oil burning in the menorah for eight days when the Holy Temple was re-dedicated. The full story of the events surrounding that miracle are written in two books called “Maccabee I and II. Those books were not included in the Jewish Old Testament, Mishnah,

or Talmud. However, they are both part of the "Apocrypha" of the Roman Catholic Bible. Why? The Hanukkah story begins when Alexander the Great conquered most of the ancient world some 2,300

Everyone complied except many Jews in a small province now known as Israel. Although these Jews agreed to support the Greek rule in every other way, they refused to stop teaching and following the laws of the Bible. They refused to worship Greek gods, eat pork, or work on the Sabbath. As a result, the Greek Emperor Antiochus declared Judaism to be an outlaw religion. Any Jew caught teaching the Bible

the Jews of Israel defeated the Greek armies, won their independence, and were free to practice their religion. The miracle of Hanukkah was not just one day’s supply of oil burning for eight days. It was also about a handful of faithful Jews putting together a fighting force that defeated one of biggest and most powerful armies in the ancient world. The victory of "the few against the many, the weak against the strong, the pure against the corrupt” was a key part of the

or observing its laws was arrested, tortured, and put to death. The Book of Maccabees describes the torture and execution of Hannah and her seven sons, and of Eleazer, the old scribe in gruesome detail. When it seemed like Judaism could not possibly survive, a father with five sons started a rebellion that lasted 30 years. That family became known as "The Maccabees", which means "The Hammers". In the end,

story. After years of corruption, brutality, and crushing taxes by Emperor Nero’s provincial governors , Jews in Israel began an armed rebellion against Rome. Inspired by the Hanukkah story, they believed God would also help them defeat the much larger and better trained Roman legions who occupied and surrounded their country. They were wrong. Their rebellion

details of political intrigue and how Jews caught practicing their religion were tortured and killed. About a hundred years after the Hanukkah miracle, Rome defeated the Greeks and seized most of their empire, including what is now Israel. Soon afterwards, Nero and later Roman Emperors declared Christianity to be an outlaw religion. Any Christian who refused to publicly renounce Jesus was arrested, and publicly tortured and executed. During these terrible years of persecution, early Christians were inspired by the Hanukkah story. They included two Books of Maccabees in their Bibles. The Hanukkah story gave early Christians hope that God would remember them as He remembered Jews who had been persecuted by Greeks

220 years earlier Is it coincidence that early Christians chose to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25, just as Jews celebrated the miraculous rebirth of their religion and nation on the 25th day of their winter month? Unfortunately, Jews had a different experience with the Hanukkah

was poorly planned, poorly led, and ended in total disaster. Jerusalem and the Holy Temple were destroyed, tens of thousands of Jews were killed in battle, executed or died of starvation. Most who survived were sold

into slavery. Perhaps rabbis removed the Maccabee books from the Jewish Bible to prevent it from inspiring future rebellions. Perhaps they did it to avoid further Roman punishment. I discovered this by accident several years ago. I attended a “Lunch and Learn” presentation on Hanukkah by a rabbi from a well known Orthodox Yeshiva in Lakewood. I genuinely surprised when he kept referring to a Roman Catholic Bible during his presentation. As we enjoy this holiday season, we should think of how much struggle, sacrifice, and suffering it took over thousands of years for us to reach the level of freedom, safety, and comfort we have today.

The Hurley Line:

Van Drew,Andrzejczak, Milam, Mazzeo, Armato, Levinson, Formica, Holtzman, Risley, Toto, Testa, Fiocchi and a Splash of Norcross!

By HARRY HURLEY Political Columnist

I

inadvertently left Ventnor Mayor Beth Maccagnano Holtzman out of our last column. It was a sin of the mind and not of the heart. I was well aware of her candidacy and had previously spoken about her numerous times on-air over the past month. Maccagnano Holtzman is the Mayor of Ventnor and a declared candidate for the New Jersey General Assembly (District 2) in the 2019 election. At first glance, her candidacy and political resume would appear to be thin. Just a few years as the Mayor of a small city in Atlantic County. However, I have spoken with a number of respected senior level Atlantic County Republicans.

Each one has a favorable opinion about Maccagnano Holtzman. This is for two distinct reasons. First, they like her overall toughness and believe that she could be a tenacious District 2 candidate. Second, they like the idea of a female on the Republican state legislative ticket. I don't care in the least for identity or gender politics, but, it does check these unspoken boxes. Behind the scenes, the political jockeying has been fascinating to observe. Not much of it has yet to reach the surface, however, those who are running are already maneuvering feverishly. This is already so different then the early stages of Decision 2017. IN the last cycle, Republicans were having extreme difficulty finding candidates willing to even put their names on the ballot. It's understandable. Atlantic County campaigns have become blood baths over the past 15 years. Also, Republican candidates know a few sobering facts all too well. They know that millions of dollars will flow into the legislative races (to benefit the Democratic candidates) from the Camden County Potentate,

George Norcross, III. Like him or not, Norcross is a legendary Chairman and a formidable nightmare for prospective Republican candidates. Millions of dollars can rewrite anyone's life in eight weeks or less. No matter who you are. This time around, Republicans appear eager to have a crack at the two open Assembly seats. Already, there's Atlantic County Freeholder Board Chairman Frank Formica. He's very serious about this run. I carved Formica up pretty bad in our last column. I now have more information as to why he is running. Formica well knows that the Craig Callaway "Vote by Mail" machine almost took him down in the recent past November 6, 2018 General Election. Formica genuinely wants to win a seat in the state legislature and try to do something about it. Formica has confirmed that a back-channel "secret" funding scheme was at the root of his near electoral demise. Multiple sources have advised me that the matter has been turned over to several high-ranking legal controlling authorities to be investigated. Atlantic County Freeholder John Risley has never been more serious about running for the nomination. Somers Point City Councilman James Toto has basically been running for it since his Primary Election campaign for the United States House of Representatives. Former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther is still considering a possible run. Current Brigantine Councilman Vince Sera is also looking at the race. If Sera decides to run, it would be his third consecutive year as a candidate. That's tough. Atlantic County Democratic in-

cumbent Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato are both running for re-election. They will not have to face any intra-party hijinks, which is always a competitive advantage. In the District 1 State Senate race, Cumberland County Republican Chairman Michael Testa is on a roll. Former New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno came out on Day 1 to enthusiastically endorse Testa; with both her kind words and checkbook. This past November 29, 2018, New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. endorsed Testa stating that, "South Jersey needs more leaders like Michael Testa. He is a small businessman and community servant with the passion and the credentials to effectively stand up for Cape May and Cumberland Counties," said Kean. Kean also said that "Republicans are gaining ground in South Jersey. From Chris Brown's Senate victory in 2017 to Salem County taking back control of their Freeholder Board this year. There has been an organized effort to elect leaders who will grow South Jersey's economy. Michael Testa is a top tier recruit to help take the next step in that fight," said Kean. The Democratic Party succession plan in District 1 remains exactly as I shared in the last edition of Shore Local News Magazine. The Democrats will have the opportunity to run a new incumbent Senator and a new incumbent Assemblyman. Yet, both appointed occupants will not be new at all. Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak will be appointed State Senator when United States Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew takes his new

Gypsy Soul Rocks Josie Kelly's

T

he day after Thanksgiving usually ushers in the holiday season with headlines and an inordinate barrage of Black Friday sale fisticuffs. But, you didn’t find that at Josie Kelly’s Public House in Somers Point. They chose to ring in the season with Gypsy Sunrise; a local eight-piece party/bar band who’s roots are firmly planted around Mainland Regional High School. This committed group of wildly talented musicians played through (count ‘em) three sets to a packed house. Surprisingly enough, they didn’t play current auto-tuned favorites or pop radio hits. They played a variety of music from the 60’s,

Horn section L To R - PJ Keiter, Will Keiter, Ricky Roehm and Dom Levy 70’s and 80’s that had the entire room (all ages) dancing and singing. Gypsy Sunrise comes equipped with their very own horn section that goes by the name, Plaid Salmon. This powerhouse is fueled by PJ Keiter on trumpet, Will Keiter on saxophone and Ricky Roehm on trombone. It was absolutely shocking to realize that these kids, under the age of twenty-one, had any connections

with Soul or R & B at all. Yet, they shined with songs like “Soul Man,” “25 or 6 to 4” and “Boogie Shoes.” Proving that a fine tuned horn section can make or break a band and a song and these horns did not break. According to Roehm, in recent interview, Foster and Thoden the group is “improving with every gig. We are ready to propel into something more. We found each other for a reason.” The spine of the band is provided by Dom Levy on bass guitar, Corey Chodes on drums and Tai Schiavo on keyboards. Levy, who also stepped up to sing lead for several songs, showed his tremendous skills by ornately playing through bass driven anthems like, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” and “ Helter Skelter.” Chodes was a solid percussionist, fluidly moving from one genre to another and wowing the audience with several small but powerful solos. And way back in the stage left corner, Schiavo provided the keyboard funk bounce of “Superstition,” the groove in “Just My Imagination” and channeled a little Ray Manzarek during “Riders on the Storm.” He was unassumingly brilliant. Lead and rhythm guitar were playfully interchanged by Kurt Foster and Billy Thoden. At some point, during “Whipping Post,” you could see the faces in the audience...looking in disbelief as if they had seen the ghosts of Thoden

Roehm blues/rock legends. It’s unbelievable how, during particular songs, the demeanor of these two young prodigies physically and musically morphed. “Crossroads,” “ White Room,” “Pride and Joy” and “ Sweet Home Chicago” were mind numbingly fantastic. It is difficult to believe that this kind of talent is still in high school. Thoden sees a great future with Gypsy Sunrise. “Even though we are doing covers right now, we are writing originals.” With a little over five months together, two members going to college out of state and very little time to tour... this band sounds studio ready. They have so much mojo that the time apart has only strengthened their sound. Nothing but amazing things ahead for this young and bright talent! If you missed the show on the day after Thanksgiving... then you can catch Gypsy Sunrise at Josie Kelly’s the day after Christmas for the big St. Stephen’s Day celebration. They will play in the Adare Ballroom at 8pm. Don’t miss it!

position. And, former Assemblyman Matt Milam will get back his old position. Former State Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi is still seriously contemplating a run for the State Senate. Many Republicans want the formidable Fiocchi to run with Testa as one of the two Assembly nominees. This is the smartest thing the Republicans could do. They are in a tough fight to begin with, because even when Van Drew is not on the ballot, they still run effectively as "The Van Drew Team." It has worked every time in the Van Drew era. And, don't expect Van Drew to forget about his team just because Van Drew is going to Washington. The Democrats will also be well funded. Back to Atlantic County. Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson is well aware of what just happened to Formica. Levinson is a prodigious fundraiser and a relentless and effective campaigner. Levinson is the master at properly framing key issues to define the campaign and his opponent. No one over the past 30 years ... except for the former legendary State Senator Bill Gormley has been able to properly gauge the political pulse and psychology of the Atlantic County voter the way that Levinson has achieved. What the Atlantic County Democrats have done for several election cycles is

to either offer a token challenge or no challenger at all. They have calculated that it's better not to "wake the sleeping bear." It still remains to be seen if the Atlantic County Democrats will recruit a serious challenger, or, do they hope to keep the turnout down by giving Levinson a pass ... or, the next best thing ... a soft challenge.

Wish List Wednesdays at Stainton’s By Marci Lutsky

M

y last article for Mom’s Vibe was all about empowering books for young girls that make great gifts for the holidays. At the end of the article I encouraged readers to shop locally for these titles. I received a lovely email from a reader wanting to buy one of the books for her granddaughters and she was asking where to buy them locally. I gladly responded with the names of three local bookstores to visit. This email made me feel so happy that my message of shopping locally seemed to be resonating with readers. No matter who you are shopping for this holiday season whether it’s teachers, children or friends, you should definitely make Stainton’s in Ocean City one of your stops. If you’ve driven along Asbury Avenue and haven’t visited Stainton’s, you should. Located between 8th

and 9th streets, Stainton’s in a gallery of shops, also know as a co-op. They have over 70 merchants displaying their items. You can find everything there including accessories, toys, art, beauty products, honey and collectibles. Some of my favorite merchants sell their products there including Cape May Peanut Butter Co. and Salty Sea Monkey. It’s such a convenient way to shop because there is so much variety. When I take my kids there, they always wander towards the doll clothing or toys section. I always wander towards the food section. I had the opportunity to recently chat with Bridget Buchanan, Director of Operations at Stainton’s and she told me all about a new initiative she started to bring in more traffic

during the holiday season. It is called Wish List Wednesdays. From 5-8 pm on Wednesdays during the holiday season, people are encouraged to come browse and fill out a wish list. Stainton’s will keep that wish list on file and shoppers can let friends and family know about the list. Why not give people some help when it comes to shopping for you? I love this

evening, no worries. Anytime you go in, they have the wishlists available by the cash registers. I realize that it’s easy to do your holiday shopping online and trust me, I do plenty of that. However, it’s important to support small businesses and local businesses. I much prefer giving one of a kind homemade gifts while knowing that I’m supporting local merchants. When you make your holiday list, try to do as much of your shopping locally. Not only does Stainton’s have a huge variety of items, they also have a wide range in terms of pricing. So no matter who you are buying for, you will definitely be able to find something at Stainton’s. They are located at 810 Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. They are open daily from 10-6 and during the holiday season they are open from 10-8 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You can find them on social media at https://www. facebook.com/staintons/ and https:// www.instagram.com/staintonsocnj/. Happy shopping!

idea because whenever I’m asked what I want for a present, I can never remember what I’ve had my eye on. This makes holiday shopping so much easier! While filling out your wish list on Wednesdays you can also enjoy sweets from Ward’s Pastry and coffee from Ocean City Coffee Co. If you can’t make it in on a Wednesday

Marci Lutsky is a local mom of eight year-old twins and can be reached at veggingattheshore@gmail.com.

ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson BABY BOOMERS SHOULD KNOW WHAT’S IN THEIR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA We baby boomers want to know whats in MM (or medicinal marijuana) and why does it matter if we know whats in it. I would like to give you a little more information. There are 3 types of marijuana to be familiar with: Cannabis sativa (or C.sativa); Cannabis indica (or C. Indica) - (C. Indica is a subspecies of C. Sativa); and Cannabis hemp or simply hemp (Hemp will be discussed in a later article). When you visit a dispensary, you will see many bottles or packages of marijuana on the shelves. The employees there will sit you down and explain what you’re looking at, but lets' impress him/her with some unexpected knowledge. All of the many packages that you will see on the shelves have different names. For instance Blue Moon, ACDC, Sunburn, Love Boat among others. Daunting? Well, don’t be impressed because All the different varieties on the shelves can be broken down to just TWO species: its either a sativa or an indica. Thats it! You will get a sativa or an indica. If the technician says what do you want, you can say I want a sativa or an indica. He will go over and get you one. Except you have to let him know not just the species but also the strain. Let’s get to that. A strain is simply the combination of both a sativa and an indica. If you use a ratio of sativa to indica it will become clear. That is, a ratio of 1:1 (one sativa to one indica) or a ratio of 20:1 sativa to indica (ACDC strain), 5:1 indica to sativa. And so on….. When you ask the technician for a 20:1 ratio of sativa to indica he will give you some ACDC sativa dominant strain. (Don’t worry you will never have to know this to make your purchase, but how nice to know what the technician is trying to get across to you or talking about) What is so important about calling it a sativa or an indica? It’s simply that they both contain different important chemicals (there are other important chemicals, but we don’t need to discuss them right now).

The chemicals are CBD and THC. CBD is found in the sativa and THC is found in indica. Thats it! Just sativa, CBD, indica and THC. Most have probably heard of THC before but not CBD. Why is this important you ask? Because the CBD in sativa will cause one to feel motivated, alert, energetic (not manic or anxious). It may cause you to feel like getting up and cutting the lawn or clean the deck and cut the lawn. You will have a sense of calmness and feel less anxious (and feeling this way without taking Xanax or valium as an example) (No worries man!). The other one (THC) will cause you to feel very relaxed and eventually sleepy. Before you go to sleep you may feel that your arthritis pain is easing up. There are many other benefits. That’s it! These are the main points of understanding what all the fuss is about. How MM works in your body. OK, so you come to me to get certified for your MM card. You decide to go to one of the dispensaries. After going through the one-time orientation at the dispensary you find yourself standing at the counter with all the different products. The technician looks at you (notices that you do not look confused but eager to show

your stuff) He asks, “so which one do you want to try at home?”. You can now confidently reply “(and this was all covered above). I would like to try a sativa with a 20:1 ration of CBD: THC because I don’t want to feel drugged or drowsy. I want to feel alert and energetic, you know sir, drugged or too relaxed like the indica could make one feel- too relaxed and wanting to sleep.” He may simply recommend ACDC. There are many uses for the THC containing strains that are found to be beneficial too. But THC (indica) does go to the brain and become psychoactive which may not be functional for you. CBD does not acton the brain to any significant level (sativa). That’s it! The genus Cannabis has several species. We are interested in sativa and indica. Scientists have found that sativa has CBD and indica has THC. CBD energizes you while THC relaxes you. Use MM safely and as recommended. Let’s show that this helpful plant can be used intelligently and is not the Devil Weed it was said to be.

(Disclaimer: yours truly does not consume psychoactive substances including MM)

your child's favorite IPAD or toy to keep them occupied at holiday functions. Try to stick to your regular routine during the holiday season, even though this could be difficult. Keeping a consistent schedule is important for children with developmental disabilities. It is always a good idea to take two cars if possible, so you have an escape plan if necessary.

Avoid activities where there are huge crowds and loud noise. Let your child wear headphones when possible to eliminate unnecessary noises. Try to remain calm, if your youth gets upset. Use deep breathing exercises to destress if necessary. Don’t be afraid to say “no,” to anything that does not contribute to your own or your child’s well-being. Lastly, take time for yourself. Selfcare is important for you to be on your best game for the holiday season. Children need self-care too, so do not forget to take your child to children's yoga. The Social Yogini will have children's yoga at the Enlightenment Cafe starting on Saturday 12/15/18 at 10:15-11:00 for a six week session. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your family time during the holidays.
