The most wonderful time of the year From the Editor

T

he best thing about the holidays for many families are the traditions. In our family, one of our yearly traditions is to skip the Black Friday shopping and instead, break out the Christmas decorations. Every year, as Thanksgiving ends, red and green ornaments and decorations begin to emerge from their year long storage. While I do love this tradition with my family, it is also one of the most overwhelming days of the year for me. The volume of boxes, the greenery, tangled lights, ornaments, and more cause a feeling of chaos for me. Suddenly, everything is out of place and my desire for simplicity and order in my home feels uprooted.

Now it’s four days later and as I write

this, the basics are done. The tree is up and the stockings are hung by the chimney with care. There are still boxes thrown about the dining room and I can’t even begin to find my dining room table under the miscellaneous decorations waiting to find their seasonal place in my home.

This season, while intended to be enjoyable in many ways, can often prove to be stressful. Decorations are just the beginning!

We own a business that takes up a lot of our time and of course, there are work gatherings, holiday parties, baking, shopping, and wrapping to be done. Can there be too much of a good thing? I mean, like I said - I DO love Christmas! So why must it be so stressful to “get it all done?”

This year I’ve decided that yes, there actually can be too much of a good thing and for the well being of my family and my sanity, I’m going to reign things in a bit.

This year, I’m going to do holidays on my own terms. I’ve come up with five strategies for maintaining my joy this Christmas season.

1: Let go of the need to keep up with the Christmas decoration “Joneses” so to speak.

The decorations do not have to be perfect and what my neighbor is doing has nothing to do with my own holiday joy. Comparison is the thief of joy and realistically, none of us live like the Hallmark Channel families. I am reminding myself and reminding you that social media is a highlight reel. What you see from your friends is a mere snapshot of their reality so do not spend time comparing their Facebook lives to your real life. We all are a little messy and we all just want to experience the joy of the season in whatever way works for our family.

2: Don’t overschedule. I am so guilty of saying “yes” to everything and booking my calendar so thick that when all is said and done, I am exhausted with nothing left for my family. It’s hard to say no! Everything sounds so good especially during the holidays but from my experience, I know that when I am overscheduled and overly exhausted, I am grouchy and I can not serve anybody with the best of myself.

3: Don’t over decorate. Do you remember National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation? I have had so many lights strung in

my house that it reminds me of that scene in the movie when the little girl asks, “Is your house on fire?” and they reply, “No Aunt Betty, that’s just my Christmas lights.”

I don’t need all of that. Simplicity is key!

Plus, when all is said and done, it’s less to take down.

4: Don’t overspend. One thoughtful gift is worth more than a pile of generic ones.

Go simple and go local. Find a friend that makes jewelry or sells candles, essential oils, books, etc and spend your money there. That’s what I intend to do - gift to my family by supporting my friends this season. Everybody wins!

5: Preserve the simple pleasures. Looking at the Christmas tree after the sun goes down, baking together, family trips around town to look at the lights. All of the small things are the memories that count. These are the moments you will remember for a lifetime when everything else begins to fade away.

hefs on a Mission is an organization of chefs in our area with extraordinarily large hearts.

“As chefs, we take it personally when the people in our community do not have food,” says Executive Chef George Fisher who headed up the preparation of 2,400 Thanksgiving meals last week.

Chefs on a Mission donate their time and skills to ensure that no one goes without a warm meal. The group formed approximately 5 years ago and their mission is simply to help those in need.

It all began with soup. After touring the Atlantic City Rescue Mission the chefs saw a real need for fresh, whole foods and healthy options for the homeless. They began making soup every Thursday at the Rescue Mission. Within three years, the chefs had prepared 75,000 bowls of heart healthy soup.

From there, the chefs published a cookbook of their soup recipes. All of the proceeds go to support the Atlantic City

Rescue Mission. As a result the Rescue Mission's kitchen is now being remodeled. Upon completion, the chefs fully intend to get back in there, to make more soup.

This Thanksgiving alone, the chefs prepared 2,400 top quality meals for those in need. Under the direction of Chef George Fisher , the Executive Chef at the Atlantic City Convention Center and Boardwalk Hall, the group of twenty plus chefs spent all day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving slicing, dicing, sauteing and preparing 250 turkeys at the Convention Center kitchen.These meals were given out to those in need at the Salvation Army, Sister Jean's, Atlantic City Rescue Mission, Codi in Egg Harbor a city and more. Basically they were provided for all who were at risk of not having a meal on Thanksgiving: the poor, the disabled, the elderly and the veterans.

The work was immense , but the camaraderie was even grander. Many of these chefs go way back, working in kitchens together 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. George Fisher and Tim Milazzo recall being in culinary school together in 1984.

These chefs take it personal when someone goes without food. It matters to them and they are prepared to roll up their sleeves time and time again to help.

all the food that they prepare by the casinos, Sysco, vendors, US Foods, the Sheraton and local produce vendors. “Whatever we can get, we work with,” says Chef Wolfgang Geckler.

Additionally, the chefs reach out to support the organizations in our area that are helping those in need. They work closely with the Salvation Army, the Rescue Mission,

another 2,400 meals for Christmas. They will again be preparing days in advance at the Convention Center kitchen. Then they will serve up the meals at different agencies throughout the area, such as the Salvation Army and Sister Jean's.

These chefs are creating a legacy for future generations of chefs to follow. The Atlantic Cape Community Academy of Culinary Arts closed its restaurant before Thanksgiving and instead brought its students to the Salvation Army to learn a different, but equally important lesson.

“Tonight our students are learning about giving back, social responsibility and also serving in large volume,” said their instructor, Joe Sheriden.

Many High School student volunteers were also there volunteering and learning about the importance of giving back. They shuffled through the crowds carrying trays of food. And many different businesses and churches sent teams of volunteers to help.

Together the Chefs on a Mission used their skills to create a tidal wave of generosity and giving back to those in need within our communities. They have pulled in business , large and small, future chefs and High School students that are the future.

The legacy these chefs have created will live on in Atlantic City and our surrounding area for a long time to come. Kudos to Chefs on a Mission!

Christmas Magic at Forever Forest

A

little known Christmas secret lives right here in South Jersey at the enchanted Forever Forest in Egg Harbor City. The story goes that the workshop belongs to one of Santa’s Master Builders, Mancini Manchester. Children who visit the Forever Forest during Christmas time become friends of Mancini and move up the to the top of Santa’s “good list.” Your Forever Forest souvenir can be hung on your Christmas tree so Santa knows that your little ones are friends of one of his main elves.

The story began when Emilio Polito and his three brothers were young boys. Their grandparents told them the story every year of Master Elf Mancini Manchester, who just so

happened to be a friend of the family. Every Christmas Eve, they’d get a knock on the door from Mancini reminding them of their especially close connection to good ol’ St. Nick.

Since then, the story has evolved and grown to become a full blown Christmas wonderland located on Breman Avenue in Egg Harbor City.

After chats with the jolly old man himself, children have the opportunity to test some of the toys with the elves and give their thumbs up.

Train N Wheels company offers a special Christmas train ride around the brightly lit Christmas tree while a life sized snow globe invites children to jump inside and play with artificial snow. Hot cocoa and S’mores are served from the snack mobile as families can warm up or roast marshmallows next to the bonfire. On some evenings, you can enjoy Christmas movies being played for all to enjoy.

To top it all off, a magical hayride makes rounds through the enchanted forest throughout the night. You might even catch Santa riding through the lights so be ready to tell him how good you’ve been this year!

This is where the potential problems begin with our waistline and floating away from our healthy lifestyle we’ve all worked so hard to perfect all year around. With more than 1,130 shopping malls in the United States and the majority of us eating something whenever we visit one, there’s potential for doing some serious diet damage during the already difficult holiday “eating season.”

With a few key strategies, however, you

can steer clear of calorie rip-offs while you’re bargain hunting for the holidays .

I continually stress to my clients , Please don’t starve! Resist the urge to starve yourself until you feel compelled to run to the food court and eat the first thing you can get your hands on. Ideally, eat before shopping or, if it’s going to be a full day at the mall, schedule a meal break somewhere in the middle. When you’re strolling through the food court, watch where you’re going. Research has demonstrated that an increase in variety only adds to the amount we end up eating. The more choices there are, the worse it is. Decide what you’re going to have before you get to the food court. Many malls have listings of all their food establishments on their Web sites, or you can look on the many mall directories that list them. Don’t just walk in there without any preparation and be tempted by all the choices.Re-

For example, get the chicken at the Japanese restaurant, a vegetable soup at the Italian place and a low-fat frozen yogurt from the ice cream shop.

You may think you just want something to “hold you over,” but most times you’d be better off having a full-blown meal. Snacks can easily add up to the same amount of calories and fat as a meal — and then you end up eating twice, with double the calories. Just take a look at these classic mall treats: Cinnabon — more than 700 calories; Mrs. Fields cookies — more than 250 calories per cookie; Auntie Anne’s Sesame Pretzel with butter — more than 400 calories. And avoid muffins — they often have well over 500 calories.

Think you’re doing something healthier? Food Hazard Alert! Keep in mind that smoothies sold at places like Smoothie King, Orange Julius and Jamba Juice are food, and they have as many calories as most meals (e.g., a 20-ounce Smoothie King Banana Boat has 520 calories). Decide if you’re having the smoothie as a meal replacement or simply as a drink with your burger and fries. Also watch out for specialty coffee drinks at Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts; they too can be in the 350-to-500-calorie range.

Sandwiches: Pre-cut them into portion-controlled sections so you can pull them out at different times without making a mess.

Peanut butter, chicken, turkey, cold cuts and cheese (on 100 percent wholewheat bread) are all great options for sandwiches on the go.

Food courts don’t always feature the mainstream fast-food establishments. But there are food types that you can rely on finding — for example, there’s Chinese; pizza , sandwiches (often Subway); grilled burgers and chicken; Middle Eastern food; and usually one or two traditional fast-food places such as Burger King or McDonald’s. Try these things, Say no to butter, mayo, tartar sauce, creamy dressings or extra cheese. Get Chinese food steamed with the sauce on the side; try the mixed vegetables or chicken and broccoli. Avoid egg rolls, fried rice and deep-fried dishes like sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken or General Tso’s chicken (more than 1,000 calories). And skip the duck sauce — just 2 tablespoons has 80 calories. Use mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper or vinegar as fat-free ways to season your food.Even nonfat frozen yogurt can be a no-no if

you get a large with toppings.Instead of cheese, opt for lettuce, tomato and onion; taking off one slice of cheese can save you about 100 calories.Top your pizza with vegetables instead of meat, and ask for half the cheese. Skip the stuffed pizza and the baked ziti or lasagna. Potatoes sound healthy, but the calories in the toppings can add up — skip the butter, bacon and sour cream. Try vegetables, and sprinkle with a light coating of cheese.

Be mindful of your steps it helps ! The average mall shopper spends more than 80 minutes per visit during the regular season, and that number probably doubles during the holidays.

And since the typical mall is more than

850,000 square feet, there’s plenty of room for walking. Bring a pedometer and see if you can get to 5,000 steps, which is about 2.5 miles. Make it your goal to walk the entire mall before you even start shopping or eating and again afterward — it might even help you find the best bargains. And don’t park too

close to the entrance — every step counts!

How about all those food sample giveaways? But remember, just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s calorie-free. In fact, I was just in Williams-Sonoma where they were offering some tasty samples, but when I stopped and looked at the packaging, I was amazed to find that a few of those little “samples” contained almost 300 calories.

That’s at least half a meal.Recently there’s been a trend to increase the food options and bring casual dining establishments into malls. These usually include restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory, Johnny Rockets, T.G.I. Friday’s, Chili’s, Applebee’s, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse and P.F.

Chang’s. Believe it or not, dining at these restaurants can be worse than eating at the traditional food court.

Look for the “light” or “healthy” menu items. Ask questions about how your dish is prepared, and don’t be shy about requesting it prepared without oil or butter. Look for baked, grilled or broiled choices, and stay away from fried foods.

If there is a salad bar, check it out.

It may be a meal in itself. Watch the dressing. Ask for all dressings, butter, sour cream and sauces on the side, and use them sparingly.

Many of these restaurants pride themselves on huge portions — share a dish or take half home. If you want dessert, share it with a friend and take only a few small bites. Order soup or salad as an appetizer (avoid creamy soups and dressings).

Remember friends, the body you take out to holiday shopping , is the same body that you’re taking home .

s a foodie and food blogger, I am inundated with food-related questions all year round. During the summer, my inbox is filled with people asking where the best new restaurants are. In spring and fall, everyone wants to know about the best farms for pick your own fruits and vegetables. This time of year, the questions always center around where to buy the best pies. Two of my favorite words when it comes to baking are small batch. I like baked goods that are not mass produced nor previously frozen. riends and family of Mainland Regional High School students toured approximately fifteen countries in one night, all without jet lag. Language clubs hosted their second annual “Taste Around the World” on Thursday, November 15th, in the Mainland cafeteria. Students from the Spanish, Latin, French, and Italian clubs treated guests to delicious authentic food from various countries represented by their club. For a minimal ticket charge, attendees could sample tasty offerings such as grape leaves and spanakopita from Greece or cachapas from Venezuela.

nyone who knows me, or listens to my radio show, Joe’s Table for Two, knows I’ve never met a steak I didn’t like! And I especially like the prime, dry-aged steaks at world-famous Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn. (Did you know that only 3 to 4 percent of all selected, inspected and approved meat in the United States is rated prime?)

Dry aging is the process by which large cuts of beef are hung on racks in a meat locker where the temperatures are kept between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, a specific humidity level is maintained, and air is constantly circulated around them. They then are aged four to six weeks before being trimmed and muscle. The meat also becomes more tender because proteins in the muscle break down. It’s an expensive process due to the quality of meat needed at the start, the large physical area required to hang the carcasses, the need to constantly monitor the temperature of the storage room, and the time involved. That’s why you find it mostly in steak houses or butcher shops, and occasionally at a highend grocery store.

I don’t recommend trying to dry age individual steaks at home, even though several well-known websites have instructions to do so. In the commercial process experts are constantly monitoring the beef to make sure there is no chance of spoilage or off-flavors, because if the beef is not pulled at the right time the surface mold that develops and is critical in the process will affect the flavor of the meat.

My concern is that unlike the carefully monitored commercial lockers, which meet stringent quality and safety guidelines, your refrigerator contains many different types of food with potentially higher bacteria counts in a non-controlled higher temperature setting.

In a home refrigerator, the temperature changes every time you open the door, the humidity is high, there is no air circulation,

there may be some spoiled item in the frig which could contaminate the steak, and the chance of your having spoiled meat which will make you sick is pretty high. So I highly recommend enjoying your dry aged steaks at a great steak house, or cooking those that you purchase at a reputable butcher or grocery store.

Back in the day when I was younger, friends and I, including the late Ed Hitzel, would go to Peter Luger just to eat their 42-ounce T-bone steak for two for lunch. But, I’d eat the entire 42 ounces myself, along with sides, and think nothing about it. And I did that often.

But as I’ve gotten older I realize that eating that much beef at one time – or even in one week – is too much and certainly not healthy for me or anyone. I am trying to exercise more, eat healthy meals that include more vegetables and whole grains, and reduce the amount of red meat in my diet.

I think Ed Hitzel would be proud of me, and to honor his memory I still visit Peter Luger’s with friends.

We sit at the table at the window and share our memories of Ed while enjoying the great steak dinner he loved. But, I only eat half of what I order and bring the rest home!

My Favorite Quick Steak Recipe: Buy the best quality steak you can afford, season it with kosher salt and pepper, and brush with melted butter. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat (or on the grill) until the pan is nice and hot. Sear the steak on one side until a beautiful crust develops, turn, repeat on the second side, and cook to your desired temperature. ange 129, a 32,000 square foot, state-of-the-art indoor firearm training facility and retail store opened Friday, November 23. Consisting of 20 pistol lanes at 25 yards and nine rifle lanes at 100 yards, Range 129 is the only 100-yard indoor rifle range on the east coast above Georgia. The ranges are independently ventilated with a multistage filtration system that ensures the user’s health and comfort.

I was left totally on my own to figure out what to do and how to do it. It just didn’t seem right to me.

ow do you maintain an attitude of gratitude?

Last Thursday most of us paused from our daily routine. We took time to spend with family and friends, reflect on our blessings and give thanks. If you’re a person of faith as I am, you recognized the many blessings God has provided along with the relationships in your life that mean the most.

But then something seems to happen almost without notice. As we feed on the leftovers in the days to come, it’s back to the run and gun of our hectic lives. I do find it quite ironic that not more than a few hours after pausing to recognize the things that really matter in life ( and they aren’t things), many of us are beating down the doors of area malls and department stores determined to buy more “things”.

I heard it suggested once that if we got out of bed each morning and all that we had left were the processions, the circumstances or the people that we gave thanks for the night before, would it change anything? In other words, are we really conscious each day of all we have to be thankful for and do we express that gratitude? It really comes down

It’s like anything else in life, if you’re looking for long term impact, there has to be intentionality. You and I can’t expect to just stumble on these things.

May I suggest it would be a good idea to set aside time on a regular basis to count your blessings. It could be at the start of a new week or maybe at the end or every day. Pull out a pen and paper and jot down what you are grateful for personally and professionally. In the down or discouraging times of life it will help you to realize that things could be a lot worse and in the up or encouraging times it will keep you grounded with what really matters in life. Why not start with this; think of one person for whom you are grateful. Give them a call, drop them a note or let them know in person. It will not only remind you of their impact in your life, there is a good chance it will make their day and remind them of how fortunate they are to have you in their life.

surfing career, Dean often lived on yogurt samples in order to scrape up enough money to compete around the globe. His sacrifice paid off. Dean qualified for the ASP World Championship Tour in 1996, the first New Jersey competitor to do so which was the springboard to a very successful surfing career, but in 2001 the unthinkable happened, Dean was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Dean struggled with the decision to go public with his disease for fear of losing sponsorships, but Dean is a guy that feared very little and that always operated from strength. Dean soon realized that he could use his affliction to educate and help others who are battling cancer as well. In 2001 he made the decision to announce to the press that he was battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif. After he announced there was an outpouring of support which empowered Dean and strengthened his resolve. He knew this was an opportunity to help others. Soon after the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation was born.

The Amos Family is on a Mission

A

t the age of 21, Anthony Amos launched his very own mobile dog grooming service, traveling in a van shaped as a big blue dog, called HydroDog. After finding success in his home country of Australia with over 100 franchises, he and his family has brought the ‘Big Blue Dog’ to the United States.

Over the past two years, Anthony and his family have been on a nationwide ‘Bathe to Save’ tour, traveling by way of RV to animal shelters across the country. Attached to the back of the van is one of their their ‘Big Blue Dogs’.

During each stop, Anthony’s son, Austin and daughters, Aria and Isabella, along with the help of their parents, bathe shelter dogs and local pets for a small cost. All of the proceeds raised at each event are then given back to shelters in need.

Last summer, Anthony and his ‘Bathe to Save’ tour made a special visit to the Humane Society of Ocean City for their ‘Barks on the Bay’ event and ‘Skato with Kato’ fundraiser. Bill Hollingsworth, Executive Director of the Humane Society, had the opportunity to meet the Amos family. “His family is 110% behind this cause,” Bill says. “They have a lot of passion and they care about what they’re doing.”

spread a positive message about pet adoption in the United States. His goal is to reduce that number of euthanized animals and help shelter dogs get ready for adoption. “We wanted to share a different message that getting a rescue can be exciting not just for the dog, but for the entire family.”

Bill says the bond between the Humane Society and Amos family has grown ever since. “There’s something unique about him coming here. He loves Ocean City.”

This weekend, the Humane Society of Ocean City will be celebrating the Amos family and their efforts. The entire family will receive the Community Service of the Year Award, and Anthony will be installed as an honorary board member. Both awards will be given out during the Humane Society’s Silver Paws Holiday Fur Ball Gala at the Flanders Hotel.

night. I had to renew it two times before we got through all of the 50 women. It sparked some amazing conversations with my daughter about the obstacles women across the world have overcome to achieve greatness in the field of science.

Once again, these are the names I want my daughter knowing and admiring. For her birthday my daughter received Women in Sports: 50 Fearless Athletes who Played to Win. It’s equally engrossing and fascinating.

Another great book for girls is called Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. It is a collection of 100 stories about extraordinary women, past and

present, each written in the style of a fairy tale. Herstory: 50 Women and Girls Who Shook Up the World is also filled with stories of extraordinary accomplishments of females throughout history. A book more geared towards younger girls is She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World by Chelsea Clinton. This is an excellent book about women who refused to be silenced in the face of adversity.

Young girls are easily impressionable and I feel that it’s important to provide them with positive role models to look up to. These books have not only been enjoyable for my daughter to read, but my son, husband and myself have all enjoyed them too. Look for them at your locally owned bookshops this season (yes I’m always plugging shop local) and make that young girl on your list happy this holiday season!

Deck the Halls: How to Decorate for the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

kay, I have a theory. Christmas wouldn’t be fun without decorations. Think about it---Christmas isn’t a holiday, it’s a style. Brightly-wrapped presents sit under sparkling trees, and gingerbread cookies line red-and-gold plates. Santa’s face smiles across every room, and outside, strings of lights glow under the moonlight.

Decorations shape a season.

This means that your house needs to

be the cutest, trendiest look on the block. I know how to get you there.

1. Set a Theme You’ve seen it before—primary-colored lights, random stockings, stuffed animals from twenty years ago----weird right?

Theme is important. Ask yourself, what does Christmas mean for you? I love old choirs singing carols, baking sugar cookies from scratch, and making some DIY Christmas gifts. I play out this theme through decorations. I’ll only use white lights and classy light-up reindeer in my yard, hang glass ball ornaments on my **not fake** tree, and wrap my presents in parchment paper, garnishing it with a trig of holly. When guests arrive, I’ll play Andy Williams on my record player, wear a cranberry-red sweater and pearls, and put out some peppermint bark.

Here's some theme ideas for you: rose gold modern holiday (think Mariah Carey in “All I Want for Christmas is You”), winter wonderland, grandma’s house (you know it’s a vibe), or family-friendly (think Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, and a ton of toy trains).

2. Get Cheap and Creative This is the fun…and hard part. Browse on Pinterest and find your aesthetic. How can you make that a reality? Print high-definition photos on glossy paper and hang them around your home. Listen to music that suits your theme. Hit up some thrift stores and see if you can bring some old pieces to life.

My mom has worked hard to set a rustic, homestyle look to our home. She use twine

to make decorative ornaments that she hangs from the chandelier. She tied white lights across the ceiling and displays an old, white cabinet door with the word “noel” spelled in red. Her holiday style inspires me to come home, sit by the fire, and sing “Joy

to the World.”

3. Incorporate the Theme in Everything!

It’s now time for implementation. Is your theme tech-savvy? Wrap your trending, robotic gifts in silver paper with curled ribbons. Drop a cookie-scented candle in your wax warmer, play orchestral music on your Echo, and brag about your “growit-yourself” poinsettia kit. If your theme is artsy, make your friends homemade soap, decorate cakes with intricate snowflakes, and get creative on the piano while you write a new version of “Oh Christmas Tree.”

This may seem like a lot of work, but in the end, your family and friends will love it. Even you might see Christmas in a whole new way.

December Film Releases

018 is a month away from coming to a close. Before the clock strikes midnight, Hollywood is striking the screens with a final cluster of films for holiday film-goers. The holiday season is being stocked with releases from a variety of distributing companies including Disney, Columbia Pictures, and Warner Brothers Pictures. These films are rated G through PG, so families have another option for spending time during the holiday season. Here is a look at the three films being shown in theaters from all three distributors.

“Mary Poppins Returns” - Walt Disney:

The beloved Disney character makes a statement this holiday season that she hasn’t faded away from the big-screen, after first appearing from Walt Disney Pictures 54 years ago.

Actress Emily Blunt takes a turn at playing the famous Mary Poppins, who returns to a 1930’s London, England. She locates Michael Banks, who is now the father of three children. She also visits Michael’s sister Jane. Seeing the Banks children as adults, Marry Poppins attempts to help them rediscover their childhood.

The film is directed

by Robert Marshall, and is scheduled to be released on Dec. 19.

“Spider-Man: Into The Spider Verse” Columbia Pictures: Fans of the iconic superhero will experience the world of Spider-Man through computer animation and voice-over acting this time around when the web-slinger hits the big screen again. In the new f ilm, Spider- Man mentors a teenager from Brooklyn as the teen becomes the next wall-crawling hero of New York City. The film features the voices of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, the new Spider-Man, and singer Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy. The film is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, and is set to be released on Dec. 14.

“Aquaman” - Warner Bro. Pictures: After years of waiting, fans of the DC Comic Book character finally have the film they’ve hoped would make the big screen. In the film, Arthur Curry/Aquaman is played by Jason Momoa. In the film, Aquaman is faced with a conflict between the surface world and the world of Atlantis in which he rules. As the surface world ravages the sea, the Atlanteans look to revolt. As his people look to revolt, Aquaman is determined the protect the entire world in which the Atlanteans and the people of surface live in. The film also stars Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, and Amber Heard as Mera. The film is directed by James Wan, and is set to be released on Dec. 21.

“Second Act” - STX Films: Singer and Actress Jennifer Lopez returns

the big screen, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Leah Remini, and Vanessa Hudgens. Lopez stars as Maya, a 40-year-old woman unsatisfied with her current job. She takes a stab at pursuing her dream career at a finance firm. The organization is misled into believing that Maya has a successful career as a consultant and hires her to perform big tasks. The film is directed by Peter Segal, and is set to be released on Dec. 21.

“Vice” - Annapurna Pictures: One for seekers of R-rated films, “Vice” tells the story of how Dick Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton Co., became the Vice President of The United States under President George W. Bush, and how Cheney strived to change the country and the world.

The film stars Christian Bale as Vice President Cheney, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, and Sam Rockwell as President George W. Bush. The film is directed by Adam McKay, and is set to be released on Christmas Day. Eric is a graduate of Rowan University, and has a passion for radio and journalism.

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings his weekend my brother-inlaw and I are "sighting in" his hunting rifles. Simply put, sighting in is the process of adjusting the scope on the rifle to make sure the bullet hits the intended target. Why am I doing this?

He asked me if I want to go deer hunting with him. Say what you will, but I have never been a fan of hunting in general let alone me doing the hunting. I did not grow up in a hunting environment. I grew up in a beach environment with swimming, surfing and fishing. None of my friends hunted nor did any of their parents but I understand it is a ritual that is deeply cherished in many families and the experience is passed on through generations. These are the hunters who do so to feed their families.

What abhor is those hunters who do so simply for a trophy. I am an animal lover. I have had pets for my entire adult life until just recently and the thought of killing an animal for any reason is foreign to me however, the thought did cross my mind when a squirrel found its way into our attic and made a nest out of a sports jack-

et I had custom made in London years ago. I looked at the squirrel and he looked at me as if to say, "Yeah, what you gonna do?" If I had something that wouldn't have gone through the roof if I fired, I might have done so but instead I bought a live trap, trapped him and set him free far away from my home. So, the thought of me taking down a deer gives me great pause.

The conundrum is that I do eat meat; I just have other people dispatch the

animals in mass quantities for me and everyone else who picks their meat up in tidy plastic packages without giving much thought as to how it came to land on their dinner plate.

Hunters tell me that areas are now so over populated with deer that they are invading yards and are a hazard to drivers. I have also heard first hand from my hunter friends that they have found deer that have starved because there has not been enough food to support the population. I can appreciate that argument but what I struggle with is me deciding which animal to put down? Let Mother Nature take its course. I am no Ted Nugent. With all that being said, I have agreed to go. Although one can count on the unpredictability of weather in the mountains, the likelihood of it being very cold is high so I have collected as much cold weather

gear as I can. I also purchased the requisite neon orange vest and hat in hopes Dick Cheney is not nearby and these items will prevent me from being mistaken for a deer. The trip will entail a four hour drive up into the mountains of Pennsylvania where the cabin is located and then the next morning either a hike or 4x4 ride to the blind my brother-in- law and his son built. Then, we lie in wait for an unsuspecting buck to wander into view. For me, the good news may be that the buck will present itself for an easy shot; the bad news is that the buck will present itself for an easy shot. Then I will have to decide whether to pick up the rifle or the camera.

Shore Mall Memories

t was Christmas time and this was the place to be. Music chimed through the department stores and smaller shops.

Teenagers swarmed around Sound Odyssey record store and Space Port arcade. Moms and their young kids waited in anticipation to sit on Santa’s lap at his North Pole wonderland.

Radio Shack, Lamplighter Gift Shoppe and Allens Shoes served a steady crowd of shoppers. Many older folks strolled Steinbachs, with its beauty salon and restaurant which overlooked

the back of the mall, where an Orange Julius and Beachcomber Collectibles stood. Just about everything could be found here. Outside was a drive in theater, a grocery store, and a tavern.

Inside, young ladies shopped designer fashions at Jeans Emporium and Tres Chic. The mall was buzzing when Donna Sommers bought her disco wardrobe there. The year was 1978 and the place was the Shore Mall.

Shore Mall opened ten years earilier as an open-air mall called Searstown. The anchor stores were Sears, Grant City and a Pantry Pride supermarket. Between 1971 and 1974,

the mall was enclosed and expanded, with Steinbach, an up-scale department store added as a fourth anchor store. Grant City was shuttered in 1976 when the chain declared bankruptcy but JCPenney soon took over the space. Pantry Pride supermarket was replaced with Foodtown, and the mall was renamed Shore Mall.

The Hamilton Mall opened in 1987,

In 1988 Clover, a discount chain in the former JCPenney/Grant City space, while Boscov’s replaced the former Sears. Boscov’s opened to much fanfare. It was (and still is) one of their best performing stores. Circuit City opened in the former Foodtown, which closed in the early 1990s. Steinbach went out of business in 1995 but was replaced in 1996 with Value City Department Store. Clover closed in 1997 when that chain also faced closure by its parent company, becoming Burlington Coat Factory a year later.

The Circuit City’s location at front right side of the mall was replaced with a K&G Fashion Superstore in 2006. It is now rented seasonally by The Spirit Halloween Costume Store.

In January 2006, The Shore Mall was to Cedar Shopping Centers for $36.5

A time capsule was buried next to the Steinbach store to be opened 100 years later on March 20, 2074. It was dug up in a small ceremony in 2013 due to the mall’s demolition. The plaque and contents of the capsule were given to the Egg Harbor Township Historical Society. . Inside the capsule were clothes from Steinbach’s department store, a reel-to-reel film, copies of several local newspapers and fashion magazines. The contents were preserved under a lead sheath and a water-treated plywood box. The capsule items are now on display there, along with other artifacts from the mall.

Ironically in 2074, the mall will be ancient history.

Gardening Through the Holidays

tay warm and toasty while gardening in December. Bring the garden indoors! Paperwhites and amaryllises make beautiful decorations for the holidays and their bulbs are easy and rewarding to grow. They also make great gifts. Stores carry kits complete with bulbs, soil, and containers. But a less expensive option would be to buy the bulbs from your local garden nursery and plant them in your own flower pots or bowls. This is a great way to personalize your display--especially with paperwhites, which are eager to grow in most any container.

Paperwhites can be grown without soil. They are very fragrant, with tiny papery white flowers on the top of a tall green stem.

Their scent can fill a room.

Simply place 5-10 bulbs in a flowerpot and barely cover the bottoms of the bulbs with water. Weigh the bulbs down with pebbles or decorative glass stones. Use a clear glass container for a fun project with the kids. Paperwhites are fast growers and you can see their roots and stems change each day. Their stems will seem to reach for the sky, and after about four weeks, you will see and smell their pure white flowers. Since their stems are tall, tie them with a decorative ribbon. Another creative way to support them is to insert branches between the stems. Use willow

branches, or paint small branches from your yard white or red for a striking and professional look.

Make growing paperwhites a holiday tradition. My first memory of paperwhites began many years ago “B.C.” (Before Children). My husband and I often took trips to New England in the fall. I remember a quaint, rustic store in Connecticut that sold paperwhite bulbs. I would bring home my little paper bag with anticipation of starting my indoor garden. Now that I have children, it’s fun to see their enthusiasm as they watch the fast growers change each day. And instead of driving to New England, I can purchase them from my local nursery. Plant more bulbs every two weeks for a succession of flowers throughout the winter.

Amaryllises are on the opposite spectrum from the delicate white flowers of paperwhites.

Instead, amaryllises really pack a punch with their large, bold red blooms. Unlike Paperwhites, you only need one bulb per container but may get multiple flowers growing from that one bulb. We gave my father-in-law an amaryllis the Christmas before his passing. It made me happy to see how it brightened his room. He was always remarking how striking it was and loved seeing the beautiful flowers that seemed to last forever.

Because amaryllis takes about 6-8 weeks to bloom from bulbs, you may want to buy pre-planted bulbs if you’d like them to bloom by this Christmas. If you choose to plant them yourself for an indoor winter garden, choose a heavy pot, as these guys will be top-heavy from their large blooms. You will also need to stake them with a support. Unlike paperwhites, you will need to plant them in potting soil.

Although they are known for their beautiful red color, amaryllises also come in white, peach, pink and variegated colors.

Start your winter garden today for beautiful blooms to carry you through the cold days of December and January. Plant some for yourself and more for a friend, so you can brighten their world as well. You don’t need a green thumb to be successful with these indoor plants. They are easy to grow and require little attention besides an occasional watering. During this busy time of year, low maintenance rewards are key. Once your bulbs mature to flowers, take a break; pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, enjoy your beautiful blooms, and dream about the garden you will plant in the spring.

Food drive to help meet the needs of those struggling this holiday season

gg Harbor Twp, NJ – Beginning Monday, December 3 and continuing through Friday, December 14, Atlantic County residents are urged to place non-perishable food items at the curb on their recycling collection day as part of the 28th annual Holiday Food Drive.

Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) recycling crews will collect the food in conjunction with regularly scheduled recycling pick-ups.

Sponsored by ACUA, the Holiday Food Drive gives residents an easy and convenient way to help the needy while helping the environment. All food collected through the Holiday Food Drive will be distributed through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, which provides the donated food to more than 300 partner charities for distribution to those less fortunate throughout Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. These charities include emergency food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens,

and other charitable feeding programs.

Perspective: The Difference Between Love And Hate

n Thanksgiving morning, I took a “gratitude” yoga class at my favorite studio, Grace and Glory Yoga. It was a class offered to raise money for a sweet local boy with childhood leukemia. There were many reasons that I wanted to take this class, all of which happened and were awesome, but none of which made as huge of an impact on me as what I am about to write about.

The gratitude class was wonderful- lots of community, peace, love, good vibes, and beautiful insight from several instructors on amazing grace and gratitude. At the very end of the class, drenched from head to toe in sweat (you're welcome, America. xo), one of the instructors asked us to think about one thing that we absolutely loved about ourselves. It sounded easy.

Surely, I could find lots of things that I loved about myself! I have had some super rad people say very kind things to me throughout my life, so I’ll just dig into that library and find something! But then I paused. The instructor didn’t ask me to think about what other people loved about me. She asked ME what I loved about ME. I sat there in half-pigeon (an hip-opening yoga pose, semi-equivalent in bodyfeels to burning alive) distraught. How is it that other people see great things in me, but I can’t actually see any of them in myself?

I dug deep and decided that the one thing I loved about myself was my undying desire to grow, and to change, and to evolve into a better version of myself.

Once I actually realized that there was this one thing that I really loved about myself, my heart nearly exploded. (And not because we had done like 27 utkatasanas).

It is awesome to receive words of encouragement from others, particularly if the way that you give and receive love is through encouragement, like me. That being said, hearing it from myself was a completely different experience. Telling MYSELF that I truly loved this thing about me... it felt... real. Like really real.

I realized that although people say lovely things to and about me, I don’t actually believe them, because I constantly have my inner voice, unrolling the scroll of all of the negative things that I think about myself, based on my own past experiences and what others have said to and about me,

and reading them off like a damn medical assistant in a pre-appointment consult. I silence those words of encouragement with, “Yeah, but...”s.

She then posed another question to us as we were dying a slow death in a 47-hour long whatthe****asana (pigeon pose), now on the left side. She asked us to think of the one thing we hated most about ourselves. This list was endless! I unravelled the scroll, cleared my throat, and began

reading off the list of all the things to find the one thing that I really, truly hated the most. Found it! My inconsistency.

I’m always moving, always going, but in what direction? Eh, that depends on the day you ask me. And if you’ve tried to make plans with me, you know that. Here is the issue: I really love my clients and my job. I'm also trying to build a company and feed my team and that depends on me and my choices every single day. It’s a lot of pressure, but I’m also super passionate about what I do, so I sometimes cancel the plans I make to switch gears to work. It's not because of money, it’s because of passion. And that's hard to put in second place.

Primary conclusion: I'm not consistent.

So now, I was back to feeling like a failure. But then the instructor asked the class to unpack that one thing and find the positive things that have come from that, because as she so eloquently said, “even in our dark, there is light”. Whoa. I began to think on that. Suddenly, I felt chills cover every inch of my body, as I came to the realization that the very thing I hated about myself- that I have always hated about myself- is also the one thing I love most about myself. Depending on the situation.

I’m inconsistent. But that inconsistency also produced this Jersey-Shore-loving chick, who will stop at nothing to reach her goals and make an impact, finding creative solutions whenever blockades come in her way, so that she can break down barriers, do whatever the heck she feels led to do, live her best life, and be the best version

of herself. I will never be complacent. I will never get stuck in a funk and be unable to grow out of it. I just won't. I will always keep moving.

I finally moved my now super stretchy leg out of half pigeon (OMG finally!) and as I moved through the rest of the class, I felt alive. The veil was lifted and I realized something: Maybe I’m not a complete and utter failure. Maybe I’m a complicated, messy, perhaps beautiful creature, who can’t always figure herself out, but tries her best, and has more to offer to the world than she realizes.

What I allow into my heart and mind matters. What I tell myself about myself matters. I can’t change the world or be the best version of myself if I keep focusing on the negative. The lies that we believe create a concrete, unbreakable ceiling....

The Hurley Line: The First Look at the Key Elections of 2019

T

he ink isn't even dry on the election certifications of 2018 and yet, Decision 2019 has already begun.

The "odd" calendar years are always very exciting and highly competitive in New Jersey. This upcoming New Year will be no exception.

In this issue, we will break down the key races in Atlantic and Cape May Counties as follows: First, at the top of the ticket in Atlantic County there will be two openings for the New Jersey General Assembly. I fully expect the two incumbents, (both are Democrats) Vince Mazzeo and John Armato will be running for re-election.

Mazzeo stands a good chance for re-election for the following reasons: He's in the majority party. He will be well-funded.

He's extremely likeable. People vote for the candidates that they "like" more so than for any other reason. Additionally, Democrats are making significant inroads in Atlantic County elections.

The most vulnerable year to run is in your first re-election bid. That is where Armato finds himself. He's a good man, who served our country honorably in the military. He loves public service and electoral politics.

He's been successful at both.

In 2017, it was hard to find Republican candidates. That had never been the case in the past 100 years. Ultimately Brigantine Councilman Vince Sera and former Margate Councilwoman Brenda Taube stepped-up

last time around and ran during a tough Republican environment.

The Republican field for 2019 is already crowded and it's still only 2018. Hopefully, the initial dirty political tactics by Atlantic County Freeholder Board Chairman Frank Formica won't be a sign of what's to come.

Here's a breakdown of Formica's recent self-indulgent, circus stunt. Formica had barely survived his Freeholder re-election bid, where it took him nearly two weeks after the election to pull-out a very narrow win over Democrat Celeste Fernandez. Formica's margin of victory was a little more than 1,700 out of more than 84,000 total votes cast.

No one could have predicted in a sane manner what Formica would do next. Suddenly, out of no where, on Sunday, November 18, 2018 Formica declared his candidacy for the New Jersey General Assembly in District 2.

Never mind that his recent election would not even be certified until two days later. It looks so bad to announce your next campaign before your current election is even officially over.

It's way too ambitious and a real turn-off for all normal people. Formica also did his fellow Republicans very dirty. Formica knew that Freeholder John Risley and Somers Point City Councilman James Toto had long ago made it crystal clear that they were running for the Assembly in 2019.

Formica had even encouraged Risley to run and pledged that he would raise money for Risley's campaign. Formica also knew that Risley and Toto had long been scheduled to announce their candidacies on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 7:05 a.m. on WPG Talk Radio 104.1's "Hurley in the Morning" program. Formica knew this, because they had told him. They trusted him.

Formica despicably chose to jump ahead of their planned announcement, and he announced his own surprise bid less than one day before their official announcement.

It is literally one of the sleaziest and most disloyal, dirty tricks that I've covered during my career.

During our on-air, breaking news interview with Risley and Toto, they both publicly confirmed the facts that I've reported here.

Formica's announcement has been met with disdain and ridicule. He's off to a terrible start.

Only favorable internal party politics can save his bid due to the dishonorable way that he chose to launch it.

At this time, Risley is one of the favorites (for the two openings). He has successfully run at large in all of Atlantic County (23 municipalities) for years and he barely lostout on an Assembly Nomination to former Assemblyman Vince Polistina in 2007.

The field could get even more crowded soon, as Sera and former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther are both contemplating making a run for the Assembly. The Atlantic County Republican County Committee Members in the following communities will decide who the two Republican Nominees will be.

New Jersey’s 2nd Legislative District is comprised of 17 Atlantic County Municipalities as follows: New Jersey's 2nd Legislative District is one of 40 in the state. It covers Absecon City, Atlantic City, Brigantine City, Buena Borough, Buena Vista Township Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Folsom Borough, Hamilton Township, Linwood City, Longport Borough, Margate City, Mullica Township, Northfield City, Pleasantville City, Somers Point City and Ventnor City as of the 2011 apportionment. The 2nd Legislative District is exclusively made up of municipalities from Atlantic County since 1967.

In another "Hurley in the Morning" exclusive, Dennis Levinson has confirmed that he is running for re-election. He has served as Atlantic County Executive since 2000. He enters this campaign as a prohibitive favorite for re-election.

Prior to his time as County Executive, Levinson served as a long-time Freeholder at Large and the Chairman of the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeeholders.

Atlantic County is the most efficiently and effectively run County in the state. Levinson has only spent only 1/2 of 1 percent of Atlantic County's borrowing capacity. This is unheard of throughout America, especially considering the deep Great Recession we were dealt in 2008, that persisted for a number of years.

Despite declining property values, high unemployment and other harsh economic realities, Levinson and the Freeholder Board did not resort to borrowing our way to prosperity, (which never works).

Freeholder Rich Dase will be seeking re-election in Atlantic County's District 4.

He has held the position since 2007 and he enters the 2019 campaign as a prohibitive favorite for re-election.

Every 12 years, the District 4 race falls at the same time as County Executive. Dase is very fortunate to be running on the ticket

with Levinson. A Freeholdre term is for 3 years and the County Executive term is for four years.

In neighboring District 1, in yet another "Hurley in the Morning" Exclusive, Cumberland County Republican Party Chairman Michael Testa officially declared his candidacy for the New Jersey State Senate.

This is the soon-to-be open seat, which will be vacated by United States Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew.

During our on-air interview with Testa, former New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno called-in and and publicly announced her unconditional support and confirmed that she was sending a check to become the first financial contributor for Testa's campaign.

Testa is a consensus-builder and the front-runner at this time. Former New Jersey Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi is also currently weighing a potential bid for the Senate.

Fiocchi served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2014 to 2016.

In my view, the best thing for the Republicans in District 1 to do is to field both Testa and Fiocchi on their state legislative ticket, because they're going to be facing the vaunted Van Drew team, which have proven to be winners time and time again.

I hereby boldly predict that it will be a Back to the Future moment within the Democratic Party in District 1. Here's what I believe is about to unfold.

First, Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak will be appointed to fill Van Drew's Senate seat. This opens up a slot for the Assembly. I predict that the Democrats will then appoint former Assemblyman Matt Milam to his old seat.

Andrzejczak first joined the Assembly by filling the vacancy left by Milam in March, 2013. Assemblyman Bruce Land will run for re-election to his current Assembly seat. This is Land's first re-election bid.

For my fellow political junkies, I promise that 2019 is going to be a most interesting and entertaining election season.

ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson BABY-BOOMERS FOR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA Marijuana is now legal after 70 years (in more than 25 states including NJ). It is not legal on the federal level. It is legal only medicinally in NJ. There is legislation on the states’ legislative agenda where it should be decided if it will also become legal for recreational use. There is also hope that more than 180 dispensaries will be approved throughout the state. If the legislation passes you will see a dispensary near you. The state of NJ will classify marijuana as “for medicinal use or for recreational use”. We are interested in “medical marijuana”.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse defines medical marijuana as “using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms or illness and other conditions”.

Many baby boomers are already aware that medicinal marijuana can be helpful for those suffering with age related ARTHRITIS, FIBROMYALGIA, PSORIASIS, PAIN, APPETITE LOSS, INSOMNIA and NAUSEA. It may be useful for helping to lower the amount of pain pills used and for conditions such as PTSD. Know that it is safe when taken as directed by a knowledgeable Marijuana doctor. There are precautions that you should ask about though. Like what are some side effects that can occur if one is older. Are there interactions with some of my other medications? How much is too much to take? Is it addictive? (yes, it could be). Forget about recre-ational use or trying to cut costs or treating yourself, see a medical doctor that you trust.

Legalization of medical marijuana has been dreamed about since at least 1948 when the government made it illegal. Today’s legalized marijuana is good news for some but not so much for others. One of my goals is to assure everyone that for most persons there is not much to fear about physician recommended MM. One should be under the care of a physician with experience in prescribing it, but there are reasons why one shoe doesn’t fit all, there may be medical conditions that would preclude YOU from using it. (Just to make clear yours truly does not use marijuana in any form or psychoactive substances for that matter.) So thank you former Gov. Corzine for legalizing MM (medicinal marijuana) and Gov. Phil Murphy for expanding the program. As a physician I now have more tools in my armamentarium to help my patients if traditional methods have failed. Patients can now get certification of a medical condition that is listed on the NJMMP web site. How to get certified was covered in SHORE LOCAL’S previous article.

The number one comment I get from baby boomers: “Doc I’ve used it many, many years ago and it made me paranoid and anxious and that’s why I didn’t continue using it” Back then, one did not have any idea what was in the street weed.

Most took too much and overdosed themselves. It still can if you overdo it today but now you know what you’re are getting with a dispensary. Use the product as directed by your doctor. But still, medicinal marijuana has different effects on individuals. There is no right answer as to how much to take. Here is the big problem with dosing.

Typically, one needs just a tiny amount if using a strain with high THC. When my patients finally get their card they head to the dispensary and make their purchase for the dispensary, many smoke it like they may have in the 1960’s. They usually use too much and sleep

Baby Boomers and seniors are the fastest growing group using medicinal marijuana in the country.

But a large segment of the baby boomers do not trust the legitimacy of its medical benefits. Perhaps they think their piers just want to get high, or they just feel too anxious about using a substance that had been deemed to serve no legitimate medical purpose.

Who is a baby boomer? Baby boomers are recognized to be born from the years of early 1940’s until about the 1960’s. If you were born in the early 1940’s to mid-1950’s, you are considered an EARLY BABY BOOMER; and from the mid 50’s to mid-60’s you are a late baby boomer. Why is this important? Because early baby boomers grew up just after WWII when the tax act had just become law. This generation were more patriotic and law abiding and generally open to the suggestions of authorities. The mores of their communities were important. Whereas the late baby boomers grew up around the Vietnam war and the rebellious 60’s generation (think Woodstock). They questioned authorities more. I find late baby boomers are open to trying medicinal marijuana. Not to get high but to seek relief from physical ailments.

The early baby boomers do not seek Medicinal marijuana cards as much and tend to need more assurance about medicinal efficacy and legality (they are more anxious about possibly breaking some of the old rules of using marijuana). It is a shame to miss out on using something natural for ailments which may keep one from enjoying the golden years.

Yo-yo It really is impossible to tell how many yo-yos have been produced since their invention around 2,500 years ago, but anything with that kind of staying power has to be considered one of the best-selling toys in history.

On the commercial U.S. market, they’ve been around since Pedro Flores opened the Yo-yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara, California, circa 1928. Donald F. Duncan knew a good thing when he saw it and purchased the business from Flores just one year later, and the “Duncan Yo-Yo” was born.

To help you keep up with the latest décor trends, celebrity interior designer, Taniya Nayak, has pulled together the top five home design trends for 2019 to provide inspiration no matter your personal taste.

1. Natural and Organic. Bring a touch of Mother Nature into your home with this trend that accentuates earthy, organic elements.

Nayak recommends adding layers of textures, like natural raw jute, and incorporating muted tones, such as terra cotta, moss green or mustard, to achieve this nature-inspired style.

2. Feminine and Free. This style embraces a pastel palette of pale blue, pink and cream to achieve a romantic and glam look. Infuse this trend into your space by creating a striped accent wall with soft-hued tones or alternate different paint finishes, such as eggshell and satin, in the same color for a dimensional effect. Bring the look to life with fresh greenery and indoor plants.

3. Eclectic and Bold. Nayak says “own your own style and show it off…make a statement!” An easy way to achieve this bold trend is to paint a door, an accent piece or even a ceiling in a bright color, like Jester Red or Ceylon Yellow. Unsure if bold colors are for you? Take a look in your closet to see which shades you tend to gravitate toward most.

4. Fluid and Fashionable. Create a space that exudes effortlessness by infusing re-

petitive patterns and fluid transitions of the same color. According to Nayak, the best way to incorporate varying shades of a single color is to use a paint sample strip like you might find at a paint supply store as guidance to achieve a serene look throughout the space. Otherwise, stick to a single shade and carefully play with patterns. For

example, pair striped dining room chairs with a patterned rug for a fashion-forward statement.

5. Luxe Modern. A little design secret to keep in mind: mixing metals is back and in a big way. Nayak encourages DIYers to complement metallic accents, instead of matching them. She suggests creating a palette of two to four metal tones and distributing them throughout the space in ways that are intentional and maintain balance. For a look that is glam, yet modern, consider pairing rose gold with pewter or brushed gold and stainless steel.

Ingenious and easy to achieve, these rising trends for 2019 will provide the necessary inspiration to update your home’s interiors.

Party with a purpose The Light’s 2018 Holiday Drive

ach year I have organized a holiday drive to help those in need.

This year we are collecting new toys, new socks/gloves and hats and canned goods.

We are collecting monetary donations at some of our live events.

The holiday drive was started for a number of reasons.

1. I am a sucker for The Christmas Holidays 2. Thanks to my parents I never had a bad Christmas. The worst was the first with my father not here with us. So if I can help someone have good Christmas...or a better Christmas, I will.

3. I refuse to be a part of a community and take so much and never

give back.

This year, The Light is producing 3 special events where you can come out and enjoy parties with purpose.

DJ’s and Artists Against Hunger December 2nd at 6pm at Ventnor Coffee The Alternative Soul Holiday Special December 9th at 3pm at The Labelle Art Gallery in Haddonfield, NJ The Festive Fest tickets $20 December 16th at 3pm at The Bourre, Atlantic City Each of these events are fun, festive, will have door prizes, special guests and networking opportunity.

More importantly they give us all the chance to help someone.
