honestly do not know which was harder...naming our children or choosing the name for this publication. The only thing that we agreed on wholeheartedly was that the word LOCAL had to be included in the name.

Why local? Because those 5 letters say it all. We are local. We are for the com-

munity that we are so honored to be a part of in all ways, always.

We care about, support and promote the wide range of small businesses that make up our area. All of our roots are here - in the community in which we live and raise are children.

When you make a purchase from a chain store or restaurant, those dollars go thousands of miles away, into a faceless millionaire's pockets. But when you shop locally those dollars stay right here, going back into our own community.

Making the conscious decision to pour our dollars back into our local businesses, rises the tide that raises all ships.

As we head into the holiday season, we encourage you to think of your friends and neighbors managing small businesses first before heading to the big retailers.Support the makers , the chefs, the artists, the entrepreneurs that have been and always will be the fabric of our communities.

The future begins now. If we want to keep our community charm, vibe and uniqueness, our choices have to reflect that. Not only to keep our local businesses thriving, but to keep our dreams thriving.

We are fortunate enough to live in the land of freedom and opportunity. America is the destination for so many people

The Evolution Of The Words, “Good Game”

I

t was a cold day on Nov. 10. It was a Saturday, and I was filming a high-school football game between Millville High School and Shawnee High School. The wind chill had packed the bleachers as much as the students and parents did.

It was the most exciting game I had filmed this season. Millville lost 28-26, after scoring a touchdown with about 30 seconds left in the game and failing to convert a 2-point-conversion and an onsides kick.

After the game, I was walking toward the exit when I walked passed a Millville player who was in tears. I had experienced the same emotions after a loss when I was a student-athlete like him.

He was African-American, and just a few inches shorter than me. He wore the number of 20 something, but I can’t remember the exact number. I couldn’t see his face because he was burying the facemask of his helment onto a trash can, as he cried. It seemed like he was hiding his face in shame of his team’s performance.

Knowing the feeling of losing a football game before, I wanted to comfort him. I debated with myself if it was an appropriate thing to do,

since I technically was at work and wasn’t sure if I was allowed to say anything to player. I decided to go for it, as they say in football.

“Hey, you played a hell of a game today kid,” I said.

“You gave them a run for their money and fought until the end. There’s no reason to hang your head because of how well you played. You’re going places kid, trust me.”

I walked away feeling overcome with pride, that pride even made me shed a tear. What was going through my mind was that I didn’t know who this teenager was. I didn’t know what his home life was like, or if he had one. I didn’t know if he or his parents were indigent for money or food.

I didn’t even know if he had parents who would support their child at a sporting event or after it.

I’ve experienced how supporting someone evolves with age. We may

not realize it, but statements to our children like the one I said to the young man from Millville are only the first stage.

Eventually, “good game” turns into, “You’ll find a job, you’ll straighten your finances out, or your life will get better.”

Sometimes strangers we encounter in life are the ones that need the encouragement from us bystanders the most. We don’t have to know what their background is or whether they’re rich or poor. We just have to be willing to reach out to someone else, because the positivity we unfurl maybe be the only positivity a person gets in their daily life.

We all encounter adversity in our lives, and sometimes we need someone to embrace us, and tell us, “Hey, you played a good game.”

Hometown Hero - Sister Jean's Legacy

f you ask someone what “legacy” means to them, more often than not the response will usually reference what they leave behind after they’re gone. Our hometown hero this edition left a legacy that continues to serve the community of Atlantic City years after she’s gone home to be with the God she served on earth. Jean Webster, also referred to as “Sister Jean” or “Saint Jean” began her ministry in 1982 when she felt led by her faith in God to feed those in need.

Sister Jean was was a civil rights hero as the first African American sous chef and leader in the Atlantic City community. She broke barriers for African Americans and women in the culinary world and paved the way for generations that would come after her. Due to health issues, Jean retired early at the age of 53. After her retirement, Jean connected the dots between a need for the community around her and a need

in her heart - she wasn’t done cooking.

What began with one man and one meal, grew to become lines of individuals waiting outside of her Indiana Avenue apartment everyday for lunch.

In the early 1990’s, Rev. John Scotland found out about Sister Jean through a fellow pastor who was bringing food to donate to what had become known as “Sister Jean’s Kitchen.” They went to her apartment and from that point on, Rev. John Scotland never left her side. Scotland recalls the first day he walked into the Indiana Ave apartment, “A man in front of me said to me, ‘take off your shoes, you’re stepping on holy ground’ and I knew I was somewhere special.”

Scotland soon joined forces with Sister Jean helping her to become an official non profit organization that would provide resources, insurance, and the tools needed to continue to grow and feed more and more Atlantic City residents. In 1995, Jean Webster’s Kitchen became a 501c3 and in 1997 after two years of renovations, they moved into The First Presbyterian Church on Pennsylvania Ave. They have been serving hundreds of meals from that location since.

Sadly, Jean Webster passed away in 2011 but with the help of volunteers, a handful of employees, and the love of the community Sister Jean’s Kitchen has continued to carry on her legacy. Rev. John Scotland continues to lead the pack as an honor on behalf of Jean Webster.

David Bond, an employee for the kitchen, knew Jean personally and describes her as an angel. “Sister jean means a lot to me. She started this out of her house.

know. The food was so good that when we were younger, we would go just to get a taste even when mom cooked. She showed so much love to everybody who came into her home. She was the grandma we all wanted.” says Bond.

Hundreds of meals continue to be served every month and the folks at Sister Jean’s do not plan on slowing down anytime soon.

Those interested in volunteering at Sister Jean’s Kitchen are invited to call Ms. T at 609-348-4300. While many feel the urge to volunteer on Thanksgiving and holidays, there is a demand for volunteers on days surrounding the holidays. If you’re considering volunteering and serving food at Sister Jean’s, give them a call and find which day they could use an extra set of hands.

Ocean City Holiday Events Start ‘Earlier Than the Bird’

cean City’s holiday celebrations begin “Earlier Than the Bird” on Saturday, Nov. 17. The annual downtown shopping extravaganza takes place 8 a.m. to noon on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Jump-start your holiday shopping and shop in your pajamas for early-bird shopping specials at stores on Asbury Avenue between Sixth Street and 11th Street.

The interdenominational Ocean City Ecumenical Council invites everybody to come together for the annual Thanksgiving Prayer Service 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church

The service is sponsored by the Ecumenical Council and the churches throughout Ocean City. Though we come from different traditions, we stand united in giving thanks. A dessert reception will follow the service. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods for the local Food Cupboard for those in need.

The 11th annual Fast and Furriest 5K Turkey Trot goes off at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning on Nov. 22. Ocean City’s small-town version of “Black Friday” takes place on Friday, Nov. 23. The Christmas in the Downtown – “Our Miracle on Asbury Avenue” – takes place 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be a warm and entertaining time featuring carolers and performers throughout downtown Asbury Avenue between Sixth Street and 11th Street.

Downtown stores will offer discount shopping for gifts, and many Asbury Avenue restaurants will be open. Free horse-and-carriage rides will be available.

Entertainment and Christmas carols will begin at 4 p.m. on the steps of City Hall at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue. Singer Jackie Evancho will perform and offer a preview of her show on Saturday. The event culminates around 5 p.m. when Santa Claus will emerge on the rooftop of City Hall. With the help of an Ocean City Fire Department ladder truck, Santa will descend and help light the City Hall Christmas Tree and illuminate City Hall.

The shopping discounts will continue on Nov. 24 as downtown merchants celebrate Small Business Saturday.

UKULELE ORCHESTRA CONCERT (Nov. 15): The local Grass Roots Ukulele Orchestra will give a free lunchtime concert at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Senior Center at the Ocean City Community Center (1735 Simpson Ave.). This will be the second public performance by the group since it formed a few months ago.

A third concert has been scheduled for Jan. 3 at the Ocean City Free Public Library. The orchestra varies from 10 to 15 people, depending on the size of the venue and the availability of players.

On my Thanksgiving Table

rowing up in Italy, I never really knew about American Thanksgiving. My first “taste” of it happened when I started working on cruise ships. Our chefs would serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to our guests, and the dining rooms and cocktail lounges would be decorated with a Thanksgiving theme. I know our guests enjoyed having a turkey dinner without having to do the dishes.

When I married my wife, Christine, and moved to Philadelphia we celebrated Thanksgiving using her family’s traditional recipes, and we continue to do so to this day. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, not just because my birthday

occasionally falls on turkey day, but because it’s the day when our family comes home to relax, cook together and enjoy each other! It’s even more special now that our children are living in different cities. I also close my restaurants so that my employees can celebrate the day with their families and friends.

Christine is in charge of the kitchen on Thanksgiving. She roasts the turkey and makes the most amazing sausage stuffing. We also have sweet potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, creamed onions, puréed chestnuts (which represent my Italian side and her love of France), cranberry sauce,

and pumpkin and apple pies.

My non-traditional addition to the day is a seafood brunch buffet. We tend eat our dinner later in the evening, so when our children and grandchildren arrive we enjoy a mix of steamed seasoned shrimp, oysters Rockefeller, herring in sour cream, smoked trout, and smoked salmon with bagels and all the toppings – red onion, capers, tomatoes, cream cheese, chopped hard cooked eggs. And occasionally we have caviar served with vodka shots! We gather in the family room and enjoy the seafood with a glass of

Serves 6 to 8 ▶6 ▶ medium-size sweet potatoes ▶1 ▶ teaspoon salt ▶5 ▶ tablespoons butter, divided ▶1/4 ▶ teaspoon cinnamon ▶1/4 ▶ teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg ▶1/3 ▶ cup heavy cream ▶1/3 ▶ to 1/2 cup Cognac ▶Salt ▶ and pepper to taste ▶Finely ▶ chopped pecans, optional Wash potatoes, cut off tips but do

not peel. Put water in a saucepan to cover the potatoes; add 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, add potatoes, cover and cook until tender when pierced with a fork. Drain potatoes, peel and put through a food mill or ricer. You should have about 4 cups purée.

Heat oven to 375°F. To the purée blend in 4 tablespoons butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and heavy cream. Whip

all together, add Cognac to taste; season with salt and pepper. Spoon into a greased 2-quart casserole dish, dot with remaining 1 tablespoon butter and sprinkle with chopped pecans.

Bake about 30 to 40 minutes or until hot and delicately brown.

Christine Massaglia’s Thanksgiving Stuffing

Serves 8-10 ▶10 ▶ ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed ▶12 ▶ ounce roll Plain Natural Sausage ▶1/2 ▶ cup butter (1 stick) ▶1 ▶ large onion, finely chopped ▶4 ▶ to 5 stalks celery, finely diced ▶8 ▶ to 10 ounce package white mushrooms, chopped ▶3 ▶ Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced into small pieces ▶3/4 ▶ cup whole pecans, finely chopped ▶1 ▶ cup Craisins ▶Small ▶ bunch Italian parsley, finely chopped ▶1 ▶ to 2 tablespoons Bell’s Seasoning ▶1 ▶ tablespoon salt ▶1 ▶ teaspoon freshly ground pepper ▶2 ▶ eggs, lightly beaten ▶1 ▶ to 2 bags (12 ounces each) cubed potato bread ▶1 ▶ bag (12 ounces) cubed white bread ▶32 ▶ ounce container unsalted chicken broth or stock

Wring out thawed spinach with paper towels or a clean tea towel until very dry; set aside. In a large skillet sauté the sausage, breaking it up into small pieces until thoroughly cooked. Remove from skillet; spoon into a large pot or bowl. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onion and celery; sauté slowly on medium-low heat for 8 to 10 minutes. Add mushrooms; cook 3 to 4 minutes.

Stir onion mixture into sausage; mix in apples, pecans, Craisins, parsley, Bell’s Seasoning, salt and pepper. Add 1/3 of bread cubes and 1/3 of chicken stock; gently combine.

Continue to add bread cubes and stock until mixture is moist. (Not all the chicken stock may be required.)

Taste for seasoning; add accordingly.

Spoon mixture into a greased 15x10x2-inch casserole dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F. about 45 minutes or until an instant read thermometer registers 165°F. when inserted in the center.

On Tour with Dean Randazzo Revenge of the Turks

I

wrote this story when I was in the 4th grade about 1980 enjoy, happy Thanksgiving!

In the year of 2000, the Turkey Army conquered the humans and put them on a big farm.

The leader of the Turkey army was Harry. Harry was a mean Turkey he wanted to get revenge for all the

years the humans slaved and killed them.

In the year 2001 Thanksgiving came for the Turkeys. They celebrated it on April 14th because in 2000 they over threw the Humans and it happened on this day. The Turkeys had been preparing for this day all year. They had the humans tied up and the Turks (for short) would feed them to make them fat for more meat! It was a week before the Thanksgiving feast and the Turks had to decide which humans they would eat for the occasion.

The Turks couldn’t decide because they were all so fat! So they had a surfing contest at the Margate pier in Margate N.J. Which is now called New Turkey.

The contest went like this: the best ten humans against Super Turkey the surf spud who also was Harry. He was painted red green and brown for New Turkey flag. He was a very fine surfer. He could drop down the waves and come off

the top getting both fins out and drop back in the tube while doing 720’s! The top ten humans were good but I don’t know how good.

They looked like fat butter balls.

The day had come for the surfing contest called the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. The waves were 8-15 foot clean down the line waves. The people who beat the Turkey would not get eaten for

Thanksgiving dinner. The first and only heat went out in the water for a 30-minute heat. They have been out there for 25 minutes now and it looked close. Oh no! Look at this wave coming in the Turkey has, he’s dropping down and the tube is coming over him and now he’s coming out and going towards the top. He flew out of the wave flapping his wings and he’s coming back in , he made it! The heat is over now and here are the results: Super Spud Harry came in 3rd place. That means seven humans will be eaten for Thanksgiving dinner!

The Turks chopped off the human’s heads and roasted them whole. Gobble gobble! The food, I heard was good. Maybe next year it will be my turn?

hanksgiving is a joyous time to be surrounded by those we love. Families will spend the day attending or participating in football games, watching the parade on TV and sitting down to a festive dinner. With more than 54 million people driving across the country this weekend, this is a great holiday for family to share fun activities. Here are several ideas to consider.

There are many ways to express your appreciation. Get together with your family and open up “A Little Box of Gratitude.” This fun-filled card game allows you and your guests to express gratitude based on different prompts. Everyone

can either share their own thoughts or throw the cards into a hat to guess who said what.

In bowling, getting three strikes in a row is considered a turkey, but have you ever heard of turkey bowling? A kid friendly version consists of using large plastic Dixie cups. Draw or glue eyes on the front of the cup and tape feathers to the back. The “bowling

Pin the Tail on the Donkey is a classic party game that has been played in many variations. This popular activity has been adapted for Thanksgiving. Gather the family for a game of “Pin the Feather on the Turkey.” Take a picture of a turkey, or create your own using paper or cardboard box, googly eyes and feathers, and hang it on a wall.

The game can be played both indoors and outside. Add difficulty for older members, such as an extra spin before being pointed in the direction of the turkey.

The dinner table is where most of us will be socializing and spending quality family time. For conversation starters, print out or create decorated cards with fun questions or

prompts to respond to. For example, ask someone at the table what they are thankful for, what their favorite part of the meal is, or who they would consider their hero and why. These are just some suggestions you can come up with.

Or, come up with a permanent memento of your family time. Using permanent marker, have each of your guests write what they are thankful for on a white table cloth. After dinner, the cloth can be washed gently and put away until next year. It’s a unique and powerful way to remember what the holiday is truly about.

It’s the little words of gratitude that can go a long way in our lives. Thanksgiving is a time where we reminisce on the key values of life, and those who we get to cherish them with.

Remember to take a moment and share your appreciation, and give thanks, to those who are important to you.

Honoring a Local Hero

gg Harbor Township resident, Pasquale Cassese has been an upstanding citizen his entire life.

At 22 years old, this local hero has seen his fair share of hardships and has never let life knock him down. Pasquale is currently serving in the U.S. Navy on his first deployment of seven months, scheduled to return this December.

Pasquale is described as an exemplary member of society by everyone who knows him. “The kind of kid who shovels the elderly neighbors driveways after every single snow,” says Jon Baker, long time neighbor.

Raised by his single mother, Joanie Lombard, Pasquale was inspired by his neighbor and lifelong friend and father figure, Johnny Rush. Rush, who was a local hero himself, along with his wife Ellen were instrumental in raising Pasquale. As Joanie worked hard to provide for her son over

the course of his childhood, the Rush family never hesitated to take care of Pasquale, even keeping him overnight on many occasions so his mother could go to work.

“They [Johnny and Ellen Rush] have done so much for me. I couldn’t have done it without them.” says Pasquales mother, Joanie.

During his time spent with Johnny Rush, who served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps, Pasquale became inspired to serve in the United States military himself.

Pasquale excelled through grade school and high school in the local Catholic school system. During his Junior year, he was nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy but didn’t get accepted. That didn’t

Entering college as an ROTC, Pasquale got straight A’s while also performing as a superb athlete on the rugby field. During his Junior year of college, Pasquale was nominated to be a commissioned officer and was given a two year scholarship totalling $116,000 for sports and academics.

On May 12th, 2018, Pasquale graduated at the top of his class from Norwich University with two National Honor Society awards - for grades and for civil engineering. This past Mother’s Day, Pasquale

was commissioned into the US Navy and deployed two weeks later.

Behind all of Pasquale’s accomplishments, there were plenty of hardships. In 2016, Pasquale’s mother Joanie faced a battle with breast cancer, ultimately undergoing a full mastectomy. She is now cancer free. Right before Christmas of 2017, Pasquale lost his father and in the same year, he lost his grandmother. Pasquale’s hero, Johnny Rush, who was intended to pin Pasquale at his Naval Academy pinning ceremony, sadly passed away on May 9th just two days before the ceremony.

Through all of his family struggles, Pasquale has continued to put a smile on his face and step up as a local and now, National hero serving the United States of America. He is described by those who love him as selfless, caring, and a stand-up citizen. Pasquale is pursuing a lifelong career in the U.S. Navy. As his mother prepares to give him the hug she has been waiting for when he returns on December 21st, we wanted to honor him and celebrate the accomplishments of Pasquale Casssse and say - Thank You for your service!

ovember comes and I immediately feel completely short on time until the end of the year. Okay, let’s get real. I feel that way all the time, not just during the holidays.

No matter how organized I try to be, it always feels like I could use an extra few hours in each day to get everything done. Over the years I have come to rely on certain services that save time and make my life easier. Here are a few of my favorites that are worth every extra penny, though many of them don’t involve an extra fee.

Let me know if this scenario sounds familiar.

You have a few checks sitting in your wallet. Maybe you have a check your sister wrote for a gift you shared for your parents and a rebate check for a product that you bought recently.

You are running errands but the bank is in the complete opposite direction of where you are heading and waiting in line to deposit those checks would add an extra 20 minutes to your errands. Here is the solution! Mobile checking is life changing. How does it work? You download the mobile app, take pictures of each side of your check and submit them. No waiting in line. Yes, it’s that easy. You will never wait in line again inside the bank or at

the drive thru. Check with your bank to find out if they offer this free service.

f you’re a local business owner, have you ever sat down and thought about what sets you apart from your competition?

I’m talking about locally based competition as well as the big box stores or chain/franchise operations. I think all too often it’s easier to obsess on what similar businesses offer that you don’t, and in the process forget to take a serious look at what you have to offer that they don’t.

My family and I just returned from a trip out of town and I couldn’t help but notice how similar many cities and towns across our country look these days. I’m referring to retail and

no matter where you go. But you can also lose the adventure of exploring something new, especially when it comes to eating.

My good friend, Food Critic Ed Hitzel who passed away a couple of years ago would say how he loved locally owned eating establishments.

He purposely avoided the chain restaurants in favor of local and one of a kind establishments. He insisted there was something authentic and unique, something genuine about these one of a kind gems and the heart and soul behind them.

So, back to my opening question.

If you are one of these locally owned “gems”, have you thought about what sets you apart, what makes you unique? At a season when we celebrate Small Business Saturday, I challenge you to look at your business as an outsider.

If you haven’t, and find yourself wishing for more business or hoping to be noticed above the noise and big budgets of the chain stores, here are some suggestions.

Take a piece of paper and make two columns. At the top of the first column, mark YOU. At the top of the second column, name a business you feel is similar to yours.

Then compare line for line how you are alike and how you are different.

Do this through your eyes.

Now find some people you trust

and ask them to do the same thing.

Compare your lists. You may be surprised that your perception and the perceptions of others may produce different results.

What about the results you’ve gotten can be used to set you apart in an even greater way to give you an advantage over “the other guy”?

Find ways to exploit your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

The bottomline is there is only one you. Use that to your advantage and watch your business thrive.

am always on the lookout for volunteer opportunities that are age-appropriate for my children. I want them to understand the value of helping others but this can be challenging if certain places require that volunteers be a certain age or if they take place during the school day. There are plenty of places where I enjoy volunteering such as Sister Jean’s Kitchen in Atlantic City and Manna at the Shore in Northfield. I was pleased

The Alcove Center for Grieving Children & Families is a very special place. Founded in 2001 by two area therapists , they offer bereavement support services for children to prevent them from growing up with anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

The Alcove offers a variety of services which includes activity-based peer support groups for children, teens and adult caregivers who are grieving the death of a loved one, a home outreach program for children facing a life-threatening illness of a family member, supervised and therapeutic

visitation programs and a school outreach program for children unable to visit the Northfield Center.

There are many ways that The Alcove Center receives funding for these valuable programs. They operate a thrift store which is open Monday through Saturday and accepts donations of clothes, accessories and household items. They also hold fundraisers and their 3rd Annual Conni’s Cookies for Kidz is coming up on December 15th. If you are a baker or your kids like to bake, this is a fabulous opportunity to give back. Bakers are asked to make a minimum of 6 dozen cookies and drop them off by noon on December 14th. Cookies will be sold for $8 per pound and the event will be held at The Alcove Center, located at 376 Tilton Road in Northfield . The event will start at 9am and continue until the cookies are all sold. Last year they had over 40 bakers donate cookies and will hopefully have more this year. If baking is your thing, consider setting aside a few hours to help raise money for a good cause.

going to be all the baking but deciding on one that will be popular. I’ve discussed this with my children and we have all agreed that our ginger chewies are always a crowd pleaser so most likely that is what we will be going with.

GINGER CHEWIES INGREDIENTS

▶2¼ ▶ cups unbleached all-purpose flour ▶2 ▶ teaspoons baking soda ▶¼ ▶ teaspoon salt ▶1 ▶ teaspoon ground cinnamon ▶1 ▶ teaspoon ground ginger ▶½ ▶ teaspoon cloves ▶¾ ▶ cup (1.5 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature ▶1 ▶ cup packed light brown sugar ▶1 ▶ large egg ▶¼ ▶ cup molasses ▶¼ ▶ cup granulated sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Sift flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves in a medium bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and brown sugar until smoothly blended, about 1 minute. Stop the mixer and scrape the sides of the bowl as needed during mixing. Add the egg and molasses and mix until blended and an even light brown color, about 1 minute. On low speed, add the flour mixture, mixing just to incorporate it.

Spread the granulated sugar on a large piece of wax or parchment paper. Roll ¼ cup of dough between the palms of your hands into a 2-inch ball, roll the ball in the sugar, and place on one of the prepared baking sheets. Continue making cookies, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Bake the cookies one sheet at a time until the tops feel firm but they are still soft in the center and there are several large cracks on top, about 14 minutes. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then use a metal spatula to transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

NOTES Makes 12-14 cookies. Cookies can be stored in a tightly covered container at room temperature for up to 4 days, if they last that long.

If you have a qualifying medical condition, a certifying physician can approve you for a card. Here are the 16 qualifying conditions: ANXIETY DISORDER CHRONIC PAIN OF VISCERAL ORIGIN (basically this means any organ in your body thats causes pain all the time - heart, pancreas, stomach, liver, kidneys, uterus, ovaries et.)

CHRONIC PAIN RELATED TO MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDER (like unrelenting muscle pain, disc herniations, sciatica, radiculopathies, arthritis, osteoarthritis,....).

MIGRAINE HEADACHES TOURETTES SYNDROME SEIZURE DISORDER including EPILEPSY resistant to conventional therapy INTRACTABLE (will not go away) SKELETAL SPASTICITY (if resistant to conventional therapy) GLAUCOMA AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS) MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Your physician will determine your qualifying condition and give you a diagnosis. To qualify you the certifying physician has to accept you as a BONAFIDE patient (real, genuine). The state of NJ requires you and your chosen doctor to have at least 4 sit down office visits before he may certify you. During those visits you will receive education on how the program works, how medicinal marijuana works, types of marijuana, strength of the marijuana, the chemistry of marijuana (CBD, THC, ECT.), safety, storage, ect.

After the doctor has legitimately established you as a patient and you intend to stay with him/her you will receive a CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION. Next you (or your doctor) can go to the NJMMP website and sign up for your card. I usually help my patients with this part because sometimes some baby boomers find this part a bit intimidating (even though there is no need to be). The website will ask you for a few documents verifying that you are who you say your are and that you are a NJ resident (sorry Pennsylvania residents, you will have to move here). You will need the following: DRIVERS LICENSE (if you don’t have one you may go to DMV and get a non driving ID card, very easy to get)

a 2x2 head shot PHOTO. No glasses or hats please. You may go to CVS, Eckards or Staples and pay $10 for a passport SIZE photo (you will not need a passport. The photo you submit will be the one that will be on your official card).

A utility bill with your name and address on it. Gas, electric, water, ect.

A fourth item is required if you want to apply for the discounts: $80 off the usual $100 for registration fee with the state and a %20 discount on all of your purchases (sweet). This item is a copy of a medicaid card, proof of military service, for retired or medicare patients, they will use the date of birth off your drivers license. Disability also get the discounts. Essentially ,if you receive help from the government you should get the discounts.

The above 3 or 4 items are scanned in / uploaded to the NJMMP website. If you have answered all the questions on the page you may now click the button to proceed.

Next the NJMMP will verify the information you have submitted.

They will send an email to you that your submitted information is good and ask for the registration fee ($20 or $100). When they receive that you should receive your card within 10 days.

Now you are ready to make an appointment for a dispensary visit where you can purchase your product of choice. You should then safely transport your product to your residence and use it safely, indoors.

The New Jersey Medicinal Mrijuana Program has been well thought out and it works. The steps are clear and the computer system set up is easy to use. However some NJ residents may be less computer savvy and require help navigating the system. The problems my patients have presented are not having a scanner or computer or finding a 2x2 photo or a utility bill. We usually work those issues out though.

Michaels has appeared in Atlantic City numerous times including his appearance when Poison and Def Leppard appeared together. The Sound Wave, full of Bret Michaels followers, was ready for an evening of rock. With the stage dark, the band began to play the introduction which apparently triggers Michaels fans who were already standing with arms over their heads before Michaels even comes out from behind the curtain.

H owever, once he hits the stage and into the spotlight, bedlam ensued. The noise reached a

crescendo when he sings the first few words of the 1st song of his set. Michaels has a list of songs which serves only to remind him of what songs he has available to select from to arouse his fans, not a set list to follow. He sings

The Thanksgiving Family Challenge

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings he Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. If we have not been thankful up until now for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us all year long, it is a sort of get out of jail free card. It is also a day in which all dietary restrictions get a free pass. For many families, the holiday is preceded by a day of travel by car, rail or air. For some, the gathering is a result of much hand wringing, negotiating and concessions given as to which side of the family will be graced with their presence. In my early years, Thanksgiving was a simple affair with just my parents and my brother sitting down for a quiet meal of turkey and few side dishes. After marriage and children the dilemma arose as to where to spend

Thanksgiving; at my parent’s house or with my in laws. In a feeble attempt at neutrality, we had the meal at one house and dessert at the other. We quickly discovered that we only succeeded in disappointing both families on the same holiday. As time went on, eventually all family members made the pilgrimage to my in-laws. My mother in law was a restaurateur and a phenomenal cook plus her house was large enough to accommodate everyone. She would be cooking and baking for days before the holiday. Children grew up, grandchildren appeared and gradually the attendance swelled to nearly thirty people.

Along with family, were neighbors, friends and a few people who would have spent the Thanksgiving holiday alone. Gradually the food came out in a seemingly never ending procession but not a morsel was to be touched until it was all on the table. With my fork frozen in mid air, my father in law stood up and gave a brief soliloquy on why we should be thankful; very appropriate and quite well put. Then he said, "Let’s go around the table and everyone say a few words of why we are thankful."

I might have been okay with that had

there been a handful of people there but with so many people I had began to focus on the steam from the mashed potatoes that ceased to rise and a thin layer of coagulated gravy starting to form in the gravy boat. I shot a quick

glance over to my quiet and reserved British mother who sat there patiently, passively waiting her turn. The permission was granted to begin eating.

Bowls and platters of food were passed around with all the choreography of a well rehearsed dance. In a flash it was over. We successfully defiled ourselves in the interest of thankfulness. The loud conversations became muted as the tryptophan started kicking in. As it will, time moved on and my wife and I longed for a more modest Thanksgiving experi-

ence with more focus on tradition. With the next Thanksgiving approaching, we conceived and executed a strategy to extricate ourselves from the usual holiday fete without permanently being excommunicated from the family.

Our grown children had their own plans so that Thanksgiving consisted of my wife and I, her two cousins with their two daughters, my mother and aunt; a tidy party of eight. Since then, my mother and aunt have passed on; my wife’s cousins are dealing with family concerns so at this writing our Thanksgiving options are limited. Nevertheless, where ever we land on this holiday, one thing is for sure. Our gratitude runs deep and whatever hurdles and roadblocks are thrown in our way, we still remain thankful for what we have been given.

I have found that yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life's challenges with a little more ease. Yoga encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that is noncompetitive. Yoga fosters cooperation and compassion and is a great gift to our children. Children gain flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness. In addition, children improve their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, and connect more deeply with the inner-self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them.

oday’s modern bride knows the exact look she wants for her dress, cake, and flowers. Thanks to Pinterest, she has a page dedicated to all of these things—sometimes before she meets the groom!

Brides of today pride themselves on their DIY skills, often in order to save money, but also to add that personal hands-on touch. Weddings cost a small fortune and the florist’s bill can take a large chunk of the budget. When planning your own wedding, consider DIY-ing the flower arranging, which can be a great way to save money.

Be warned, however, this is no small task. Brides have so much to think about, especially at the last minute. The tricky part about wedding flowers is that you can’t make the bouquets, garlands, and centerpieces until a day or two before the wedding—just as rehearsals and rehearsal dinners are about to begin. But before I scare you off completely, let me say, it can be done.

Simple can be elegant. I remember planning my own wedding so many years ago. Even though I made my bridesmaids’ bouquets (in, gasp, silk!), I hired a florist to make a giant arrangement with dozens of flowers in many different colors for the front of the church. The thing cost a fortune. A month later, my new husband and I attended a beautiful wedding with very simple arrangements made from a single type of flower with lots of greenery. There was something beautiful in its simplicity, and I had an “aha” moment. Even though her flowers looked elegant, I have a feeling they cost a lot less than my garish focal point.

Eucalyptus is a popular choice of greenery

for today’s weddings. Their dusty green leaves complement most other colors and can be used with minimal flowers since they are beautiful on their own. Use different varieties of eucalyptus such as a combination of silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus.

This past weekend I arranged all the flowers for my friend’s daughter’s wedding. It was quite a feat, especially since it was a first for me.

Fortunately, I liked the bride’s taste and style, so it made everything much more enjoyable. Just when I started having a panic attack the Friday night before the wedding, my friend, Sandy, showed up and helped until the wee hours. Boy, do I owe her! But imagine if I had been the bride trying to pull this off at the last minute.

If you are a bride, be prepared to delegate—a good life skill to learn now. It’s easy to forget all the little details like floral tape, and pins for the boutonnières. Make sure your crafty friend is on speed dial!

Bridal Bouquet, add hints if other colors for interest bridal bouquet, most people picture all white flowers, but think again. Do a quick google image search of bridal bouquets, and you will notice that though there are indeed white roses (or cream) in most bridal bouquets, they also have florals with a hint of color—perhaps a blush rose, or pale pink spray roses.

It’s also nice to have some flowers in your bouquet to coordinate with your bridesmaids. Even if you don’t feel like associating with them as the stress of the wedding builds, adding the color of their dresses to the bridal bouquet will give a sense of unity.

If you feel inclined to attempt arranging your own flowers or having a family member or friend do it, keep things simple. In the end, you don’t want to needlessly spend a fortune on flowers when you can use that money in a much wiser way with your new mate. Don’t stress over the trivial. When you celebrate your 25th anniversary, you won’t be thinking of your wedding flowers, but how blessed you are to grow old with your best friend.

Atlantic County Braces For Salami Tsunami

he autumn breeze has turned to a crisp winter wind and with it builds a crescendo that is descending upon the otherwise-tranquil Atlantic County.

That crescendo is the culmination of sweeping momentum that is barreling down the coast and headed for citizens of the shore.

The driving force behind this storm is none other than attorney Steve Salami - otherwise known as the Salami Tsunami.

The beach is under 20 miles from wherever you are, the farms and their crops are readily accessible to us all, the woods are prime for hunting during the fall and winter, and the mountains are 2 hours away. There is always something to do.

I know that not everyone shares my view on this County. We wouldn’t be a normal Community if we didn’t have opposing opinions, but I would ask you to consider rejecting the negativity and drama that surrounds Atlantic City and County and seeing it for what it is. ’m often asked , should I be worried about pesticides in my child's foods?

Unfortunately, Yes. Pesticide residues are often found on produce, and fruits and vegetables are an important part of your child's diet.

Its true that pesticides protect crops from damage, which helps keep groceries affordable. But research shows that pesticides also contribute to a wide range of health problems, including cancer, lung disease, reproductive problems, and possibly disorders of the endocrine and immune systems.

Animal testing indicates that pesticides can cause permanent changes in brain chemistry that may lead to behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, and even long-term damage to the brain and nervous system. Not good!

Pesticide exposure can affect your child's health today and in the future. In fact,

some effects may not become apparent until later in life. Children tend to eat a limited number of foods, which can increase their exposure to specific pesticides. They also eat more food relative to their body weight than adults do. Children may also absorb pesticides more easily. And because their gastrointestinal tract is still developing, their bodies may be less capable of breaking down toxins. Finally, pesticides can block absorption of the nutrients that are vital to healthy growth and development.

Keep in mind that eating food isn't the only way your child can come in contact with pesticides: They can also get into drinking water. And if you use pesticides in your home or yard, that's another way your child will be exposed. You can even track pesticides into your home on the soles of your shoes. Then your child can ingest the chemicals if he plays on the floor or puts something from the floor into his mouth, for example. What really concerns me is that Pesticides can also cross the placenta, so pregnant women need to take care to minimize exposure.

And please , don’t let a fear of pesticides make you serve less produce. Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet for every child. Whatever you do , don’t cut back on your child getting in fruits and veggies daily. Remember , the negative impact of not including fruits and vegetables in your child's diet is far greater than any potential risk from pesticides at the levels found in produce. And there are things you can do to reduce the amount of pesticides your child consumes without restricting produce in his diet.

I like to share a few ways to protect your child from overexposure of pesticides by practicing these few things.

Peel fruits and vegetables, and remove the outer leaves of vegetables like lettuce and cabbage.

Scrub (under running water) all fruits and vegetables that you don't peel. Cleaning products specifically designed to wash produce may also help.

Some foods – like strawberries, grapes, broccoli, lettuce, and spinach – are more difficult to wash. Soak these briefly, then rinse.

Choose produce without mold, bruising, and decay. These are likely to harbor more pesticides.

Trim the fat off meat and remove the skin from poultry. Pesticides (and other environmental chemicals) are often concentrated in the fat and skin of poultry, meat, and fish.

Consider buying organic produce, especially foods your child eats a lot of.

Look for locally grown produce. Fruits and vegetables that are grown far away require after-harvest pesticides and waxes to help them survive the long trip. And

produce that has to travel is often picked before ripening, which reduces flavor as well as nutrients.

Buy produce in season. Although it seems like a treat to buy juicy, red strawberries or tomatoes in the dead of winter, keep in mind that food grown out of season usually comes from another hemisphere.

Again, this produce will be picked earlier and probably contain more pesticides.

Serve a wide variety of food, especially produce. A varied diet limits repeated consumption of the same pesticides.

These had the lowest levels of pesticide residue: onions, sweet corn, pineapple, avocado, cabbage, sweet peas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, kiwi, domestic cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, watermelon, and mushrooms.

These are the 12 fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residue: apples, celery, sweet bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, imported nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, domestic blueberries, and potatoes.

This doesn't mean that you need to ban apples from your shopping cart, but you may not want to rely on them solely to meet your child's fruit requirements. Introduce your child to many different kinds of fruit, including those with low pesticide residue, like kiwi and mangoes. And when you do serve apples that aren't organic, wash them thoroughly or peel them.

Thinking organic is better? That's up to you. Two recent research reviews found no compelling evidence that organic foods were nutritionally better than nonorganic foods. Eating organically grown foods may reduce your exposure to pesticides, but they have the same nutritional value as their conventionally grown counterparts. Also, some organic meat (like pork) doesn't have the antibacterial properties that make it less likely for bacteria to grow. If you choose to buy organic produce, try to buy it directly from the producer – there's a good chance it'll be cheaper. Look for organic growers at your local farmer's market, farm stand, or food cooperative.

And if you have the outdoor space, consider growing some of your own organic fruits and vegetables. Gardening is also a great way to teach your child about nutrition.

he Atlantic City Arts Foundation is proud to announce their sixth “ARTeriors” Installation. This biannual event is a celebration of art in various forms.

You may remember the last Arteriors Installation on Tennessee Avenue when Bernie McCabe took over the entire side of a building with a solvable maze while abstract, emersion, and mural art was created inside the building by several other local artists.

November 30th, artists are taking

over “The Orange Loop” at 153 S. New York Avenue in Atlantic City to do it again. This time with a new group of artists and a partnership with one of Atlantic City’s newest hangout spots, Bourre.

During the opening ceremony on November 30th, guests are invited to enjoy light bites Bourre, wine from The Iron Room at the exhibit space, and live performances from The Sustainable Circus and Live Body Painting by Heather. Visual artists will fill the New York Avenue space with contemporary and experiential art.

Located at the top of the beach block on New York Avenue in Atlantic City, the empty building will give home to five new art installations and a platform for two performing artists on November 30th. Artist include Amanda Bylone, Mark Chu, DJ Hexx, Anthony Miraglilo, and Simone Simon.

After the opening ceremony on 11/30, the space will remain open to include follow up art events. December 2nd, 9th, and 16th will feature live artist events at Bourre in conjunction with the

ur pre-election Crystal Ball predictions from the last issue of Shore Local Magazine were nearly perfect. In fact, our forecast was scary accurate.

We purposely didn't call the Atlantic County Freeholder-at-Large contest betweenRepublican Chairman Frank Formica and Democrat challenger Celeste Fernandez, because we knew it wouldn't be over by General Election Day itself and would extend into election overtime.

As we file for this issue's deadline, the race is still not decided. Formica leads by 2,600 votes with 2,000 Vote-by-Mail ballots and 2,500 Provisional Ballots still to be counted.

We are issuing our final crystal ball prediction of Decision 2018 and projecting that Formica's lead will hold-up and that he will win a new four-year term.

Here's our rationale: Out of the 2,000 Vote-by-Mail ballots, Fernandez will chip away further at Formica's precarious lead because of the success of Craig Callaway perfecting the art of the Vote-by-Mail ballot.

However, in the end, it will not be enough. Even if Fernandez gets all 2,000 remaining Vote-by-Mail ballots, she'll still trail Formica by 600 votes going into the final count of the 2,500 provisional ballots.

Regarding the provisional ballots; some of them won't even count for various reasons ... bad signatures ... a person may have already voted at the machines, fraud, etc.

Additionally, Formica will be the recipient of many of the legal provisional votes, because unlike the Callaway organizations success at achieving such a command of the Vote-by-Mail ballots ... Provisional ballots typically fall in the near exact same pattern as the voting machine tallies that took place on election day.

Hence, Formica is a near lock to win a narrow re-election victory over Fernandez. Let this particular election serve as notice that identity politics and near monolithic voting patterns are taking root.

With more than 84,000 total votes cast in Atlantic County, Fernandez will ultimately receive more than 41,000 votes. This, despite the fact that her name recognition on election day was barely above zero.

Regardless of your politics, it is still an incredible finish for Fernandez, who legally immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic.

The reality today in electoral politics in America is simple. People are voting party and not people. How else can you explain United States Senator Robert Menendez winning a convincing (more than 9 point) victory over a pristine clean Marine, Bob Hugin?

It didn't used to be with this way. Don't forget, former Democrat (New Jersey) United States Senator Robert Torricelliresigned his United States Senate seat (in 2003) because he had accepted a Grandfather clock as an unauthorized gift.

By today's standards, that hyper-technical (nothing-burger) infraction would not even measure a blip on the moral/ethical radar screen.

Many close observers are already looking to next year's critical elections, whereby there are openings for a new State Senator in District 1 (withUnited States Congressman-elect Jeff Van Drew, D-NJ 2leaving his current seat); Two New Jersey General Assembly seats in both District 1 and 2; Atlantic County Executive and other key races.

The "Hurley in the Morning"program on WPG Talk Radio 104.1 scored a big breaking news report, when Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinsonexclusively confirmed that he will be seeking re-election in 2019.

On Monday, November 19, 2018 at 7:05 a.m., there will be a "Hurley in the Morning"exclusive, when a candidate will announce their intention to seek one of the District 2 Assembly seats.

On a date, soon-to-be-determined, "Hurley in the Morning" will present another exclusive, when a State Senate Republican candidate in District 1 will formally announce their intention to run for Van Drew's former seat.

We also expect current District 1 Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak will receive the appointment to Van Drew's vacated State Senate seat, effective January 3, 2019 and he will then seek election in 2019 for the remainder of Van Drew's unexpired term.

This also gives the Democrats in District 1 the opportunity to appoint a new interim Assembly member, too.

Van Drew will officially take his seat in the 106th United States Congress on January 3, 2019 at 12:00 noon.

At the national level, our predictions of Republicans losing the majority in The United States House of Representatives; while expanding their majority in the United States Senate came to fruition.

There are still more than two dozen

House races, two Senate races and the two Governor races (Florida and Georgia) that remain too close to call.

In Georgia, former Secretary of State (the Republican, who resigned his seat after the election) Brian Kemp leads (Democrat) Stacey Abrams 1,975,077 (50.3 percent) to 1,912,127 (48.7 percent).

This race should already be over, however Abrams simply will not concede.

There are 20,000 Provisional votes left to be counted. She has no Mathematical chance to catch Kemp. However, she is holding out hope that Kemp's margin of victory will go below 50 percent.

They have a rule in Georgia that the winning candidate must receive a minimum of 50 percent plus one vote in order to win on General Election day. If Kemp's margin of victory goes below 50 percent, there will be a special run-off election on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

In Arizona, current (Democrat) Congressman Kyrsten Sinema leads (Republican) Congressman Martha McSally (991,189) 49.3 percent to (970,986) 48.3 percent.

McSally led until the Maricopa County votes came pouring in. There are about 250,000 votes left to count and they will come (more) from Maricopa County and from Sinema's own Congressional district.

It appears likely that Sinema will prevail over the first female fighter combat pilot in American history.

It's a disgrace that more than a week after the election, Arizona had only counted 1,485 out of 1489 precincts. How can you not count all of the districts on election night?

The most disturbing activities are happening in Florida, where it appears that actual blatant election misconduct is going on by officials in Florida ... in Broward County in particular.

At this time, current (Republican) Florida Governor Rick Scott leads current United States Senator Bill Nelson by a scant .22 of one percent of the vote out of more than 8 million votes cast (50.1 percent to 49.9 percent). The current vote totals have Scott in the lead by a margin of 4,095,771 to 4,080,923.

In the Florida Governor's race, (Republican) former United States Congressman Ron DeSantis leads Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum 49.6 percent to 49.2 percent). The current vote total is 4,073,763 to 4,037,761.

Florida state law requires a machine recount for any election result that is under .50 percent and a manual recount if the result is under .25 percent of the vote.

As things now stand, we will see both of these triggered in Florida Both Republican leads are with all 6,111 precincts reporting in. However, a still unknown number of provisional ballots have not been counted. This is where the skull duggery begins.

Attorney's are now flocking to Florida and it looks like the year 2000 Bush v.

Gore fiasco is about to play out all over

again. And, not surprisingly, because it's not an accident ... Broward County is again at the epicenter of controversy.

Democrat Brenda Snipes is the head election official of Broward County. Her well documented, checkered past is a disturbing one.

In May, 2018, Snipes was was found guilty of "unlawful" ballot destruction in the Debbie Wasserman Schultz Primary election race.

In August, 2018, it was discovered that Snipes led an effort to open Absentee ballots in private.

In 2016, Snipes posted early voting election results before the polls closed.

Also in 2016, Snipes was accused of having more voters on the election rolls than there are eligible citizens.

Snipes has allowed voters, who are allegedly age 125 to remain on the current voting rolls. FYI, no one in the entire world is age 125.

Snipes has admitted that illegals are voting in Broward County. Governor Scott and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondishould have filed criminal charges against Snipes years ago. If Scott loses this race, Broward County will be the reason.

Two days after the November 6, 2018 General Election, 78,000 additional votes were "found" in Broward County and 15,000 additional votes were "found" in Palm Beach County.

The Democrats have hired Marc Elias, who is the best election lawyer in the country. He was Hillary Clinton's lawyer, who was involved with Fusion GPS and the phony Christopher Steele dossier. This is very bad news for Scott and DeSantis.

The races for Florida United States Senate and Governor should already be over. In fact, Gillum promptly conceded defeat on election night. However, in Florida, they have early voting, election day voting and now they also have post-election day voting that routinely takes place.

It's disgusting and it's a real threat to our Democratic Republic.

day, to get to my kids, I would have. All I could picture was them standing on the sidewalk all alone crying with no one to take care of them, and everyone at the school having gone home. Well, like most things in life, we got a friend to pick them up and all was well. As my children got a little older, things definitely got a little easier.”

Bergstrom and her family relocated to South Jersey and opened a business in Ocean City together. “Yes, with my husband. I should have listened to my first instinct about working together though,” said Bergstrom.

They opened a second store in Central Square, Linwood. But after a few months, working together, along with other issues, they decided to divorce. In the divorce Bergstrom got the Central Square store, which she says she had much more of an interest in, and he got the Ocean City Store. It was another tough adjustment.

Now on her own, and in Central Square for more than eight years, in suite 8, she decided to move to another suite in Central Square, suite 28. “I’m very happy here and hope to be here at least 8 more years,” Bergstrom says with a smile.

Bergstrom’s best business advice is “That is nothing in life worth having is easy. If it was easy everyone would be doing it, right. So be a non-conformist, think outside of the box, don’t get in debt, pay for everything in cash for a while. And make it work for you. You will be surprised how wonderfully supportive some people can be when you let them in on this wonderful journey your about to embark upon.”

eing a woman Entrepreneur has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. It just suits my personality. That’s not to say its easy, by any means,” shares “That’s so Rich” owner, Sandra Bergstrom. “It requires a great deal of self-discipline to get up every day and do this on your own. There is no one telling you what you should or shouldn’t do. But its worth it.”

Bergstrom would not recommend this path for everyone. “You need to have a specific passion in an area that is marketable and that you love to share with other people. Its this love for what your doing that will help you through the tough times,” says Bergstrom. “But when its good, it’s amazing. There’s a feeling of pride of ownership and happiness like you feel about your children.

Because it is truly your baby!”

Bergstrom is a 55yr. old single mom of two grown children, started her journey nearly 30 years ago when she graduated from Design School (Art Institute of Atlanta). Her first job in the field was in Philadelphia as an Interior Designer in commercial design. “It was a safer bet for me to work for a large company, getting a pay check and experience. I truly enjoyed it although my heart was still with residential design which is a much harder path to follow right out of college.”

A few years later, Bergstrom married and had first child, a son. At that point she started to feel as though she was missing important moments with him. Not working was not an option for her family at the time. In her position as an executive with the company, she couldn’t easily take time off, even if her son was sick or needed her.

But when the company Bergstrom was working for was sold, she decided that it was the chance she had been waiting for, to go out on her own and do residential design.

Bergstrom’s husband was already in the Blinds business and working on his own. Friends and associates often questioned why they weren’t working together. “Short of it was, I wanted to stay married,” says Bergstrom.

With his blessing, she ventured out on her own and started a Blind, Shade and Design business of her own, in Central Bucks County Pennsylvania.

“My own name, my own location, my own accounts, my own clients. It was tough, but I learned on the fly,” recounts Bergstrom.

A few months after opening, Bergstrom wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t figure out why. She was pregnant with
