She means business From the Editor

T

oday, there are 72 million women in the American workforce, 30 million more than in 1984! 14% of the executive positions in Fortune 500 companies are women and that number is growing rapidly. While there is still work to be done in the way of women equality when it comes to income, we certainly have come a long way over the last 50 years and I am proud to be here witnessing the change.

Growing up in the 70’s, I knew and was thankful for the fact that I would be “allowed” to work but gender specific roles were ingrained in me. Men were the CEO’s and women were the nurses and the teachers. Now, as Bob and I run a family owned business together, I take great pride in being a business owner, while still being a mom and wife, and all the other joys of womanhood.

In 2018 as we look around and see how far we have come as a generation of women, it is incredible to see the amount of women owned businesses, women CEOs, women

in leadership, and women taking on roles that have always been male dominant. It is reported that as of last year, 11.6 million firms in America were owned by women.

In this edition of Shore Local, we celebrate those women making moves and leading the pack. In our special section highlighting women in business, I encourage you to take the time to read and celebrate each of these women. If you find a service that you need, use these powerhouse business owners and show appreciation for the women who worked hard to bring their dreams to life.

We look forward to our “Brain Food for Business Women” event on November 8th and hope that you will join us for what is expected to be a great conversation at Naomi’s Cafe - a woman owned business!

oy does our weather seem to just flip at a moments notice! Just two weeks ago we were sweating and complaining about record high temps in the 80s. Now? We've woken up to frost and bitter cold overnight lows on several different occasions. Fall is indeed here and it's here to stay. The pattern flip that occurred last week was something I talked about since September. It was crucial. I needed x,y and z to line up because it gives us a great indication as to how the Winter will play out.

This week is rather boring. We go back and forth between the 50s and lower 60s but things could get pretty interesting towards

the weekend. I'm sure you saw it on social media - the typical hype mongers warning of yet another hypothetical disaster. Ridiculous.

The signal is there and there WILL be a storm. The question remains "how close"? We will work those details out over the next 48 hours.

Worst case? Strong winds, heavy rain and moderate tidal flooding.

Several key factors need to come together in order or our first nor'easter of the season to have any impact on our area.

Right now I'd say I'm 60% sure we will get SOME sort of impact.

What exactly, I don't know yet. Stay tuned to my facebook page, my app and of course our newscast on Channel 4 to stay ahead of whatever may occur.

A Local Wonder - that beat the odds

T

here is no doubt that Rylee Howerton is an extraordinary girl. Born with a rare and often fatal chromosomal disorder, Rylee was given a 5% chance of making it to her 1st birthday and only a 1% chance of seeing her 10th Birthday. Today, at 12.5 years old, she is thriving and doing it all.

Rylee's chromosomal disorder is very rare, Partial Mosaic Trisomy18.

It generally presents with heart problems, kidney tumors and epilepsy. Rylee does take medication to control her epilepsy, but otherwise is healthy in a way that puzzles doctors nationally.

Rylee's chromosome disorder was picked up in a routine amniocentesis and Rylee's mother was strongly encouraged to terminate the pregnancy, being told

it was incompatible with life. That went against the Howerton ’s fundamental beliefs and they are so glad they opposed the doctor's orders.

“She was born with a purpose. There are so many moms going through this and Rylee is their ray of hope,” says her mother, Julie Howerton, with s smile.

“Wonder" by Natalie Merchant is Rylee’s song. The lyrics line up with Rylee's story and it was written for children just like her, that defy the odds. Julie has always shared this with Rylee and when the song comes on Rylee will still say “ That's my song.”

Although Rylee's physical health is a wonder to modern medicine, she still faces many challenges. At six years old, Rylee was also diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She struggles with impulse control, trusts too much and reads and writes below grade level. Yet her capabilities, love for life and smile outshine them all.

On any given day you might see Rylee looking tough as nails in a football uniform or you may just see her in a gown and heels donning a crown.

When Rylee’s brother Camden got involved with football a few years back, Rylee’s interest was sparked. Now she is a linebacker, the only girl playing on an all boys team.

“Rylee is the epitome of perseverance and she has the most beautiful blinders, “ says Rylee's mother, Julie Howerton. “She doesn't see strange looks or disapproving body language. She doesn't care about Male or female, race, religion, rich or poor, etc… She just loves people, all people. And once the coaches began to accept her, then the boys accepted her too.”

Rylee was recently, crowned International United Miss NJ. In fact , she currently holds three state pageant titles: Miss Amazing Preteen, Royal International Miss New Jersey Preteen and International United Miss New Jersey Preteen.

When Rylee grows up, she wants to be a Science teacher for the deaf. She loves sign language and shows her skills off in the many pageants she competes in.

Hometown Hero: Michael Bray tickets for this event go to cfbnj.org A few weeks ago, Bray completed the Cambridge Ironman, 140 miles of swimming, biking and running. He dedicated his fundraising for this event to the Community Food Bank also. Bray credits the thought of helping those facing hunger to his ability to will his body to endure and complete the triathlon.

Bray resides in Somers Point with his wife Kimberly and two children, Dylan (9) and Jocelyn (6). It is clear that their father's heart for giving back to the community is being noticed. At only 9 years old, Dylan is already organizing “Dylan's Fun Run," an annual event that raises funding for Shore Medical Center Pediatrics.

ichael Bray, founder and director of Operations of Passion Vines, was only 11 years old when his mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This made a lasting impression on him and he has made it his life’s mission to help those living with MS, both locally and nationally. “For as much as it happened to my family, it happened FOR my family. We are stronger and more compassionate for it,“ says Bray.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of communication within the brain, and between the brain and body. Within a 10 year period Bray watched his mother's condition deteriorate, from requiring the use of a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair. Spooky Halloween Foods Vegging at the Shore

H

alloween may be fun for kids because they get to dress up in costumes and go trick or treating, but my favorite part of Halloween as an adult is making spooky foods. Our Halloween tradition is to get together with a few families for dinner before taking to the streets. My kids look forward to creating new and fun spooky foods each year. They are easy to make and can actually be healthy too!

One of the easiest and biggest crowd pleasers is Mummy Hotdogs.

Start with hot dogs (or veggie hot dogs) and cut a line down the hot dogs starting halfway down and to the bottom. This will create two legs.

Then take crescent rolls and wrap them around the hot dogs, including on the legs. Bake them for about 15

minutes at 350 and then add two dots of mustard where the eyes should be.

Another fun treat to make are Vampire Mouths. Take 2-inch rounds of apples and cut part of the top and bottom out. Take sunflower seeds and stick them with the pointy ends coming out around the mouth. Take peanut butter (or sunbutter for kids with food allergies) and spread it into the middle of the mouth. Then take a thin strawberry slice and put it where the tongue should go.

Guacamole Vomit will both gross out and please kids and adults

at your Halloween gathering. Carve a pumpkin and buy or make your favorite guacamole. Arrange the guacamole on a plate coming out the pumpkin’s mouth. Serve with chips on the side. It will surely bring a smile to everyone’s face.

Jack O’ Lantern Cheeseburgers are another crowd pleaser. Cook the hamburgers or veggie burgers like normal and before topping them with cheese, cut out triangle eyes and a mouth on each cheese slice. Melt the cheese on the burgers and you could have ketchup coming out the mouth to be blood.

Kids will squeal with laughter at these!

Last but not least, how about Sea Monster Hummus? Take your favorite homemade or store-bought hummus and arrange it in a circle on a plate. As the legs arrange thin slices of bell pepper around the hummus.

For the body, cut the top off of a mini bell pepper, remove the seeds and place it cut side down on top

of the hummus. For eyes you could use olives or chickpeas cut in half.

Serve this with pita chips or chopped vegetables.

Somers Point Restaurant Week “Small Town, Big Taste” Serving Up November 2-11th

omers Point Restaurant week is gearing up to celebrate its 9th season this year. November 2-11, Somers Point will feature 19 participating restaurants with pre fixe lunch and dinner menus. Somers Point Restaurant week, or SPRW, originated in 2009 as the brainchild of new Community Program Coordinator, Nick Regine.

Given the number of various restaurant establishments in Somers Point, Regine thought it would be a great time to feature the big taste of the small town.

In an effort to cater to locals, the Somers Point Business Association chose early November as the perfect combination of a town free of the tourist buzz but weather still nice enough to enjoy.

In the first year, 9 Somers Point restaurants participated in the first annual SPRW. The following year brought 12 restaurants, and the town-wide event

has continued to grow year after year.

This year, 19 out of 26 restaurants are participating in the 10-day event. The week was expanded to 10 days to offer two full weekends to enjoy the tastes of the town.

In 2011, a kick-off event was added to the itinerary offering patrons a chance to come out and preview a handful of tastes from the Restaurant Week menus for a donation entrance fee to support The Community Food Bank of Southern NJ. The first several years featured different themes including Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, complete with a 10-day Dining Passport to Food in Film and TV. Lacking annual turnout, Somers Point Business Association Restaurant Week Committee made the decision in 2014 to feature one consistent event name, coining the name “Sip and Savor. Somers Point, A Small Town with Big Taste.”

In 2015, the Foodie Film Festival partnered with a marketing class at Stockton College to create a film montage of classic Hollywood film food clips that would

be played at the kick-off event that year.

This well attended kick off seemed to be a launching point for SPRW. In 2016, the kick-off was moved to Clancy’s By The Bay. This event filled the entire restaurant including outside space.

Educators from the Academy of Culinary Arts and students offering food demos attended the kick-off. SPRW gave back by offering two $500 culinary scholarships that year. The “Two Chicks and a Chef” show with Kimmie Kocktail and Chef Mike D’Angelo along with the support of SNJ Radio were instrumental in kicking off Restaurant Week 2016 and 2017.

After 2016 the Somers Point Business Association advised the restaurant week committee that SPRW had grown to new levels and should consider forming its own non-profit entity that would allow for future growth. In March of 2017 the Somers Point Restaurant Assn. (SPRA) originated. A New Jersey nonprofit corporation was officially formed to create events for Somers Point restaurants, plus other food and drink related businesses. The newly formed association currently hosts the Somers Point Restaurant Week every year with founders Bill and Pat Hurst of Fitzpatrick's Deli and Steakhouse at the helm of the organization, along with 18 members, and 4 board members. SPRA proceeds from events support food-related causes.

After the induction of the newly formed organization, the 2017 kick-off was held at Greate Bay Country Club for the first time, utilizing the second floor upstairs in its entirety. The two-hour Sunday event had escalated to a grand production with many partners donat-

ing their time to support the Kick-off with admission donations going to the Community Food Bank of Southern NJ. Since 2009, the two-hour afternoon event has raised over $10,000 for the Community Food Bank and given $2000 in scholar awards to the Academy of Culinary Arts program.

Now in its 9th year, the success of the event lies with its dedicated food sponsors since inception. SPRA appreciates the generous contributions of Presenting Sponsor, Sysco Food Services and its Support Sponsors, B. F. Mazzeo’s Fruit & Produce, D&D Foods, Erco, Penn Jersey Paper, Northern Liberties Food Processors, South Jersey Industries, Westside Meats, SPBA, Somers Point EDAC, and new this year the South Jersey Jazz Society.

The SPRA is looking forward to the success of this year’s 9th Annual “Sip and Savor Somers Point”, and “Jazzing Up RW” with the South Jersey Jazz Society and nightly solo feature performances.

Although the kick-off has taken a reprieve this year, the 10-day dining event, November 2 – 11th promises great food and fun, with 19 participating locations.

Also, a gift basket worth over $250 will be given out on November 17th to the diner that posts the most pics to the SPRW Facebook Page using the hashtag #SPRW18. Bon Appetite!

SPRA has partnered with the Community Food Bank, Southern Branch to hold their “Feed a Family” campaign during the 10-days of dining. Diners can opt to add $1/$3/$5 to their bill. In addition, SPRA will be donating two $500 scholarships to two ACA students. “What better way to give back while enjoying great food and music this holiday season?”

AC Artist tells story "We Call it Home" Recalls eminent domain dispute of Vera Coking vs Trump

ll of the stars aligned for me to make the most poignant visual image of a building that it DID happen to on a building that it COULD happen to, across the street from a building that it IS happening to,” expressed Brooklyn artist, Dave, also known as Air Rat. Hang on tight for this story ride!

This summer, Dave found himself right in the middle of a perfect storyline of “history repeating itself” 25 years later in the form of an eminent domain case. The properties in play are in, of all places, the Monopoly inspired city of Atlantic CIty. Originally from South Jersey, Dave is a career artist living in Brooklyn. With ties to Atlantic City, he was inspired by the 2017 48 Blocks Arts Celebration hosted by the AC Arts Foundation. Knowing that he wanted to participate in the 2018 celebration, Dave got to work thinking of an idea for a mural that would make a

powerful statement. It was important that the art that he created in Atlantic City stood for something.

Dave recalled stories from Atlantic City past including Celestine Tate Harrington, the quadriplegic who played the keyboard with her tongue, the gentleman who plays the clarinet under the Caesar’s overpass, and one that he vividly remembered - the story of Vera Coking.

Vera Coking, as Dave recalled, was the woman that had a casino built around her house. Vera Coking was the woman who beat Donald Trump in an eminent domain case in the 1990’s. Coking fought against the big guns to maintain ownership of her family home on Columbia Place where she raised her three children.

the 1980’s when Bob Guccione, the founder of Penthouse magazine, offered her $1 million for her property.

After turning down his offer, Guccione proceeded to build a giant structure right next to her house, even taking possession of the air space above her house, which resulted in a looming metal structure over her property.

ger opponent in this real life game of Monopoly: Donald Trump.

Trump posed no threat to Coking though, as she stood confident in her decision not to sell her property. As the 22-story Trump Plaza took over the skies outside of her windows, Coking planted firmly in her single standing white home down below.

In May 1994, Coking was offered $250,000 from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority along with a threat to use the powers of eminent domain to take control of her property. Coking would have none of that. With the backing of The Institute for Justice Coking fought back against the CRDA allied with Trump and all of his money. Coking came out victorious. In Summer 1998, the Superior Court of New Jersey ruled that Trump and the CRDA were wrong and Coking would maintain ownership of her property. Coking, now in her 90s, lived in that home for another decade before ultimately moving to California in 2010 to be with relatives. Trump Plaza went out of business in 2014.

As Dave began to recall the details of the Vera Coking case, he knew that this would be his mural inspiration for 48 Blocks. The only question that remained was, “where would he paint?” With murals resurrecting

throughout the city during the weekend arts celebration, he would have to claim a wall that he could make his mark on. In a buzzing city full of life and businesses, Dave was adamant about painting his mural on a single standing building.

He was not lying when he said the stars aligned in favor of the art. The series of events that happened after are what make this story fascinating.

It just so happened that Dave’s father was visiting a friend in Atlantic City in January 2018. She had just moved into the 3rd floor apartment with her newborn baby. Directly across the street stood a single standing building with a beautiful blank slate siding that would be perfect for Dave’s creation. Zach Katzen, program director for the AC Arts Foundation, allocated the wall for Dave.

“Dave had a vision of this piece from the start, even the location. He really is a true artist that is committed to his visions and doing what it takes to see them come to life.” says Zach Katzen.

For one week during summer 2018, one year after he decided to participate in the 48 Blocks Arts Celebration, Dave stayed with the same family friend while he brought his Vera Coking inspired mural to life.

staying, he could get a Bird’s Eye View of the mural as it took form.

Dave took inspiration from images of The Veras Coking home found on the internet including the red camaro featured in the iconic image of her home taken in the early 1990’s. Recreated in his own “Air Rat” unique style, Dave created the beautiful mural that you now can find on Vermont Avenue in Atlantic City titled, “We Call It Home.”

In a set of circumstances that could not have been planned if he had tried, during his stay on Oriental Ave, Dave learned that he was staying in the home that is facing an eminent domain case as we speak, hence the opening quote.

The three story home, owned by Charles Birnbaum, the legendary Atlantic City Piano Man, is facing near exact circumstances as The Vera Coking home 25 years ago. Birnbaum is being represented by the same firm that fought for Vera Coking, The Institute for Justice.

With the opening of Revel Casino in 2012, Charles Birnbaum received notice that the CRDA was planning to take ownership of his property under eminent domain law.

Birnbaum, who has built memories in this home for nearly 50 years, marched right up to the next CRDA

meeting and held up a photo of his home. He stood before the CEO’s that make up the CRDA and stated, “I’m Charles Birnbaum. I am the owner of this building that you want to take from me. I’m the guy who has tuned your pianos in all of your casinos and kept your shows going for over 35 years. I’ve been able to do it well because I have this property to call my home base. This is what you’re taking away from me.”

Birnbaum felt he had a strong case in the matter and reached out to the Institute for Justice, which agreed to represent him Pro Bono. To Birnbaum, that was like hitting the lottery.

“Thousands of people lose their homes under eminent domain all the time because nobody can afford to fight for it. Lives are shattered because they don’t have the money. Win or lose, having the Institute for Justice fight for me meant everything.” shared Birnbaum with Shore Local News.

This house on Oriental Avenue isn’t just an empty building to Birnbaum. It’s where his life began after he was given a second chance at making life count. His parents bought the home in 1969 after a lifetime of tragedy. They were both

After losing the only apartment building that they could find in Philadelphia that would allow them to practice the piano, Charles’ mom suffered severe depression. Not long after, Charles attempted suicide in his junior year of college. Their life felt hopeless until they decided one day to visit Atlantic City and begin again.

Charles and his father found their perfect home - something that they could finally call their own in the United States. It was that year that the Birnbaum family began to thrive and find their new lease on life. The home offered refuge to the Birnbaum family for decades and continues to serve as a space of safety, connection, and rest for Charles and the families who rent the upstairs apartments.

Birnbaum isn’t going down without a fight against the CRDA. Since 2012, there have been numerous court hearings between Birnbaum and the CRDA. In November 2014, the first ruling stated that the CRDA could have access to the property and in 30 days, the house would be destroyed. Immediately after, the Institute for Justice appealed the ruling, resulting in a 9 month stretch without any action being taken on the property. In early 2015, the judge denied the CRDA rights to the property unless they could prove what their plans were for the vacant lot.

In 2016, after another hearing, it was ruled that what the state and CRDA were trying to do was a manifest abuse of eminent domain. The following month, the CRDA appealed this ruling and just this past week oral hearings between Birnbaum’s team and the CRDA were held at appellate court in New Jersey. It will be another

six months or so before we find out the outcome of this story.

“Working on this building is my therapy. It’s being close to my family legacy. The more I work on this building, the more respect I have for what was built here. This is the place that survived the storm of 1944, the storm of 1962, Hurricane Sandy, and storms that have decimated other properties. This building has a right to exist. It embodies a spirit of its own.” - Charles Birnbaum.

Vera Coking, Charles Birnbaum, and countless others take great pride in calling Atlantic City home. The CRDA holds great interest in the betterment of Atlantic City and does a world of good for the redevelopment of the city including investment in housing and neighborhood development. Unfortunately stories like these and the people connected to these stories find themselves caught in the crossfire.

The AC Arts Foundation is in place to provide a platform for artists to express themselves on canvases small and large throughout Atlantic City. In using his creative expression, Air Rat found himself with a unique opportunity to share the past, present, and future of a battle plaguing many community members living in evolving cities.

Atlantic City is full of rich history and no matter how the Birnbaum story continues to unfold, Coking, Dave, and Birnbaum have certainly left their marks on Atlantic City in ways that they can all take pride in.

“Whatever means you have to get a safe ride home, that’s what we’re about,” says Bill Elliott, founder of the HERO Campaign. Bill says that public awareness has helped spread the word about designated driving. “We are a tap on the shoulder, a constant reminder to people, that you need to have a sober driver to drive you home.”

Last summer, dozens of local bars and restaurants took part in the HEROtini challenge. Each restaurant came up with their own signature mocktail, or non-alcoholic beverage, to serve and sample to patrons. Over 370,000 votes were cast online to determine the winner.

The HERO Campaign was launched in the memory of John R. Elliott. John

was a graduate of the Naval Academy when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver while on his way home to celebrate his mother’s birthday in July 2000. His family founded the John R. Elliott Foundation and HERO Campaign in his honor.

Drunk driving claims the lives of 10,000 people annually. Thanks, in large part, to the help of the HERO Campaign and their tireless efforts, they have helped to raised awareness to this very critical issue and save countless lives. n Monday October 15th, The City Of Atlantic City lost one of its most iconic figures Mr. William “Sonny” Lea. Mr. Lea was a part of the life’s blood of Atlantic City. Mr. Lea opened “Sonny’s Barber Shop on the historic Kentucky Avenue and cut the hair of the boys and men (and a fair share of ladies) of the city and beyond. Not only would the people in his chair get a haircut , they would receive great conversation and insight.

Mr. Lea was addressed with love and respect as Mr. Sonny to the people that came for haircuts and wisdom. “Mr. Sonny” was however, known through out AC, SJ and the

basketball community for his knowledge of the game, and his love of local basketball (AC, Holy Spirit, Pleasantville, ACCC, Stockton and whoever in SJ was making their mark in sports.)

Most Importantly, “Mr. Sonny” touched the lives of many athletes and non athletes from Atlantic City in every generation from the 1970’s until now. It’s safe to say...the many people he helped will now make sure his contributions live on and that he will continue to help new generations through the strength of the good works he left behind.

The viewing for Mr. Lea will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, October 26th, immediately followed by the funeral from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Adrian Phillips Theater inside Boardwalk Hall.

Sonny Lea was like a father to me personally.” Mayor Gilliam went on to explain that people knew him for his basketball IQ, however, Mr. Sonny took many kids from the city to places like Six Flags or The Basketball Hall of Fame because he knew many local parents did not have the resources to give their children those experiences. Mayor Gilliam also stated that he held a hat and coat drive.

City Council President Marty Small- “Atlantic City lost a community giant. Sonny gave back. He was able to do some special things, because of his wide range of connections on the east coast.” Small went on to discuss how Sonny gave basketball players like himself the opportunity to play against and with players from Baltimore and DC leagues and the famed Sonny Hill and John Chaney Leagues from Philadelphia.Councilman Small also discussed the fact that Mr. Sonny was a smart and successful business owner.

Paula Glass, ACHS girls basketball player and women’s player at St. Peter’s College, Jersey City. “Mr. Sonny Lea was an ICON and a father figure to a lot of us. He was an adamant

supporter of student athletes and the Black Community. I remember Mr. Sonny renting vans and busses to take a lot of us underprivileged children to

museums and athletic events, in hopes of exposing us to “better things.” This is a great loss for not only the Lea family but for the entire Atlantic City community and surrounding areas. I will miss his infectious smile and his words of wisdom.”

Tamika Barber Bullock- “He had so much Love for all of us during some of the most important years of our lives. And even as we grew from our youth and into adulthood, he still was there for us.

Lisa Oliver- “While Sonny Lea was overall a strong supporter of Atlantic City High School (ACHS) Basketball, he was an especially strong supporter of the girl's team. I was at ACHS from 79-82, the last two years playing on varsity. At that time, the team only had three staunch supporters, Mr. Thompson (ACHS, Equipment Manager - forgot the first name), Teddy Woodoo, and Sonny Lea. Now Mr. T and Mr. Teddy would travel to all our games and was a physical presence, but Sonny, through his barbershop, gave us a platform to be seen and recognized. Every time there was a story written about the team, whether it was from The Atlantic City Press or any of the northern city newspapers, Sonny would have it displayed in his barbershop.”

Whatever it takes.

Ingredients:

▶2/3 cup sugar ▶3 tablespoons all-purpose flour ▶1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ▶1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg ▶1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste ▶6 cups sliced, peeled McIntosh apples ▶2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ▶1/4 cup firmly packed light brown or dark brown sugar ▶store-bought or homemade pie dough ▶2 tablespoons butter or margarine ▶1 egg, beaten (optional)

Directions: Preheat oven to 425.

In a small bowl or on a piece of waxed paper, stir together the sugar,

flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

In a large bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice until completely coated. Add the flour mixture and brown sugar to the apples; toss to combine completely.

Roll out half the pastry into a 12-inch circle. Place on a 9-inch plate. Spoon the filling into the pie plate. Dot with butter.

Roll the second half of the pastry into an 11-inch circle. Place on top of filling. Press edges of both crusts to seal, then crimp. For a shiny crust, brush with egg, if desired. Prick with a fork to vent.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until crust is browned and filling is bubbly.

Cool on rack.

he Linwood Farmers Market held their first annual apple pie contest on Saturday, October 20th and it was a sweet success! Two fifth grade students from Belhaven Middle School won the contest. We were lucky to have a lineup of celebrity judges. It was a great day at the market!

Sarah DiLeo and Lily Studer submitted the winning recipe which was pure perfection. Judges for the contest included Jessica Maher of Jessie’s of Linwood, Carmela DiSanti from Carmela’s Cool Kitchen, Mayor Richard Depamphilis and his wife Sally DePamphilis.. The award winning pie was judged on presentation and taste. Besides being beautiful, the pie tasted divine. The crust was great both in terms of texture and taste.

The filling was sweet and thick, exactly the way a pie should be. Market goers were treated to tastes of the award winning pie and before long there wasn’t one bit left.

Joe's Table for Two

So, you want to open a restaurant?

I

’ve been in the restaurant business for over 50 years, and without a doubt one of the most frequently asked questions I get is: “What do I need to know before opening a restaurant?” And with the popularity of the Food Network and Netflix television shows, not to mention all the celebrity chefs who make the restaurant business seem glamorous, this question is asked more and more frequently.

First, as I tell everyone who asks, the restaurant business is not a business, it’s a lifestyle. And if you can’t embrace that, you can’t own a successful restaurant. Food and the love of food has to be in your

blood. It’s hard, sometimes backbreaking work. You work hard and you work long hours. There is never a 40-hour week. And you work all the holidays when everyone else has the day off.

Not only do you need to be a chef (or someone who knows the food business extremely well), you need to know about every aspect of the business. Some days you’re the chef, but most days you also are the general manager, receptionist, dishwasher, bookkeeper, accountant, server, housekeeper, repair person – and the plumber!

Here are just a few things I’ve learned through my many years in business that I hope will be helpful if you’re considering opening a restaurant.

You must have a clear business plan. There are many resources out there in today’s internet world to help you develop a plan. Be sure to include your financial advisor and accountant in the plan development, and research state and local regulations regarding licensing, building and tax codes.

A few things to include in your plan are what type of restaurant you want to open and where, how big it will be, who is your competition, what will your marketing plans be, and what the restaurant will physically look like, both internally and externally. And, importantly, how will you finance this new venture? Will you have partners? And if so, how much input will they have in the dayto-day operation of the business.

These things are just the tip of the iceberg.

Don’t open a restaurant without any experience in the food business. If you haven’t done so, spend some time working in a restaurant – wait tables, work the line if you can, wash dishes, be a bartender or host. Get to know what’s going on and why.

Be sure you have a good understanding of the financials of the business. You can’t be successful if you don’t understand profit and loss statements. You need to understand margins, and you need to be able to successfully negotiate prices with vendors.

Speaking of financials, can you afford to work for perhaps months without taking a salary? If not, how will your family survive? This is one thing so many people forget to consider.

Take time to develop a great menu. Be unique and set yourself apart from your competitors. Put your own twist on things, and ask for feedback from your customers to make your restaurant better. Use social media to the fullest, and if you can, hire a specialist to help you promote your business.

Invest in technology and install a POS (point of sale system), which is critical to the success of any restaurant business today.

And never stop learning.

Continue to grow…and have fun.

Rejuvenate Your Garden with the Colors of Fall

inally, the weather has caught up to the calendar and we can don our boots and sweaters, and turn off the AC! October is a month for the senses: the smells of cinnamon, apples, and pumpkin spice; the feel of brisk sunny days and cool autumn nights around the fire pit; but most of all, the sights of rich colors of the season that somehow feel like comfort food for the eyes and soul.

Chrysanthemums are the very picture of fall and provide those warm, deep colors we crave this time of year. After the dog days of summer have taken their toll on your plants, colorful fall flowers breathe new life

into your garden. Mums come in enough color ranges to please all tastes—from yellow and orange, to lavender and burgundy. Most people treat mums as annuals, but if you plant them in the ground instead of just leaving them in their pots, they will come back for you the following year. Planted mums tend to get leggy but can be cut back in the spring and summer until June to keep them

But mums are just one of the many flowers that liven up your fall garden.

Pansies have a cheery look and blend well with mums and pumpkins.

They seem to have happy little faces and really add a burst of color to your garden and potted plants. Choose icicle pansies, which are bred for colder climates. They will bloom in the fall until a deep freeze, then go dormant, but will bloom again in the spring. You may even see them blooming through the snow.

For something unique, plant celosia, which derives its name from the Greek word for burning. They come in quite a few different varieties.

Some look like red, orange, or yellow flames of fire; others have a burgundy velvety look that makes you want to touch them to make sure they are real. Another variety boasts purple spikes that attract pollinators.

Daisies aren’t just for summer gardens. Just as the Shasta daisy starts to fade, the Montauk daisy begins to bloom, its tough succulent-like leaves are able to tolerate the cooler temperatures of fall. White petals give a touch of freshness to the garden while the yellow centers blend well with fall colors. Speaking of succu-

lents, plant sedum in your garden for unusual fall bloom. In my garden, I have sedum Autumn Joy which has grown and bloomed reliably for years; its flower clusters begin as a pink and turn a deep copper color. Like most sedums, it can be grown from cuttings and is very easy to grow.

If purples and pinks are your style, plant asters. They look like small colorful daisies on very tall stems, although they can come in compact versions and are sometimes sold with pots of mums. Their deep purple color is striking in the fall garden and the tall plants paint a lovely backdrop for shorter fall flowers. They have the added benefit of feeding any lingering monarchs, who are storing up nectar for their long flight of migration.

Some vegetables look too good to eat. Plant ornamental cabbage and kale that are bred for their good looks. Their leaves form large beautiful pink and purple rosettes.

For a burst of fiery color and a unique part of your fall decor, spice things up with ornamental peppers which have grown in popularity as a fall decoration.

Color your world happy as you warm up your garden with the wonderful oranges, yellows, and reds of autumn. Once established, daisies, chrysanthemums, sedum, and asters will come back year after year. Visit your local garden nursery for inspiration, and you will see that it’s easy to create a fall garden that you will want to show off to your trick-or-treaters.

Don’t pack on the Halloween Pounds

he basics of healthy eating do not go away during the holiday season. Just because it’s a “sweet” time of year, doesn’t mean you throw away everything you’ve been doing to stay healthy. Strive to eat 5-6 small meals a day so that you never reach the point of being really hungry. I find when I’m eating small meals throughout my day, I’m never starving, and therefore are less tempted to grab something unhealthy. Planning is the KEY to keeping your overall daily calorie goal in check.

Stay hydrated. Often, thirst can masquerade as hunger. You may be tempted to grab a Halloween treat when really, you just need a glass of water. Have a glass or bottle of water with you at all times. When you feel the urge to eat a treat, drink a bottle of water first.

It seems like every store brings out the treats by September . Buy candy late. There is no need to buy candy the second it comes out in the stores. Wait until a day or two before Halloween to buy the treats you are giving out. By storing the goodies for 24-48 hours instead of a month, you can save yourself a lot of temptation. Buy candy you don’t like! Don’t buy the stuff you really love, that’s just asking for trouble. Personally, that means I need to stay away from chocolate. Instead, I buy the hard candies that are not as appealing to me. This way, I’m not tempted to eat it.

A big tip , Store Halloween treats out of sight. Don’t keep a box of candy in a place that you’re going to see it every day, like your pantry or snack cupboard. Instead, store it somewhere you won’t see it. I store our treats in the front closet area. I NEVER go in that closet, so I never see the treats until it’s time to put them out on Halloween night.

Take time to enjoy your Halloween treats. I’m not saying NEVER enjoy a Halloween treat…you still can, just in moderation. Only pick out your absolute favorite treats, and then savour them.

By slowly eating your treats, you’ll have a better handle on how much you’re eating, plus you’ll really appreciate the treat. Just as you would for

a meal, sit, eat, and savour the treat.

I like to give myself a certain number of treats I will eat. For me, it could be 5 treats..PERIOD. This is not 5 treats every day, just 5 treats TOTAL! Then I savour those treats over the next 5 days.

And when they are gone, they are GONE!! A really helpful tip is, each time you enjoy a treat save that wrapper. By the end of the week you can count just how many sugary treats you enjoyed for the entire week with the wrapper accountability.

Enjoy Halloween parties for the atmosphere, not the food. Don’t waste your allotted indulgences at one Halloween party. Enjoy your friends and have fun without overeating. Here are some bonus tips to help you with that: •Have a healthy meal or snack before you go to the party.

•Plan ahead on what you’ll allow yourself to eat/drink at the party and stick to the plan.

•Choose a small plate, allow yourself one trip to the spread, and savour each bite.

•Position yourself away from the food table.

•Bring your own Halloween treat.

A Halloween party is going to full of unhealthy food temptations, so why not bring your own healthy dish! That way, you know there will be at least one healthy food you can enjoy at the party.

•Handle Halloween temptation at the workplace. There are always one or two co-workers who feel the need to bring in tons of leftover candy to the workplace. If you just can’t resist, then allow yourself ONE treat and cut it off there. Or else, ward them off by filling the communal candy dish with a bag of treats that you don’t like. If you find you are still being tempted, then move the candy to a place where you won’t walk by it every 5 seconds.

•Last but not least, in case of an emergency, have a pack of gum with you. When you are faced with temptation, chew on a piece of gum instead.

This Halloween don’t be tricked by the treats !

Many people like to go outside their comfort zones come Halloween, and what better way to do that than with haunted houses, corn mazes, spooky superstitions, and, of course, a bevy of scary movies?

Colleagues always encouraged me to explore entrepreneurship. I enjoy problemsolving an d love projects.

Entrepreneurship is a lot about being creative and open to new ideas, because both businesses deal with creative events. There is always a "problem" to solve, and a new project to work on.

Tell us what your average day looks like.

I am an early-riser, so I often will be at the shop by 6 a.m. I want to make sure the flow of the day is ready, check in on things we need and look at events that are coming up. I check the accounts first thing in the morning and take some time to think! I find the more time I think about situations or events, the less reactive I am. I want to be proactive

during the day, not reactive. My day varies between website work, social media, events, supplies and forecasting six months out. I have some staff, which allows me to be able to do those things on days I am in

shop. I do all of the above, plus hang out with our guests, sweep the floors, clean the bathrooms, take out the trash, etc. All jobs are on the table.

I do anything and everything to try and provide a nice space for staff and customers.

If you could give advice to anyone wanting to start their own business, what you tell them?

Slow and steady wins the race.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time building your brand. Know that you are worth every penny. Sometimes as new business owners we don't feel completely confident in what we are doing. Know that you have to stand in your power and own the room - so to speak. I don't mean arrogantly, I mean with a sense of purpose and in the concept, that you are here to offer some awesome stuff to people in the community.

My Journey as an Entrepreneur

B

eing a woman entrepreneur has been one of the best choices I have ever made. It just suits my personality. That’s not to say it’s easy by any means. It requires a great deal of self-discipline to get up every day and do this on your own. There is no one telling what you should do or not do. What’s right or wrong. But it’s worth it.

Don’t start a business just because you want to be an entrepreneur. You must have a specific passion in an area that is marketable and you love. It’s a long road not for the weak at heart (not to discourage anyone.)

It’s this love for what you are doing that will help you throughout the tough times. But when it’s good, it’s amazing. There’s a feeling of pride in ownership like you feel about your children. Because it truly is your baby!

I could sit here and tell you all the steps you need to follow on paper to be successful as your own boss. You can find that anywhere on the web. And what’s on paper doesn’t always translate to real life. But I say, go for it!

I am a 55 year old single mom of two grown children. I started this journey about 30 years ago when I first graduated from design school (Art Institute of Atlanta). I got my first job in Philadelphia as an interior designer in commercial design. It was a safer bet to work for a large company getting a pay check and experience. I truly enjoyed it, although my heart was still with residential design, a much harder path right out of college.

Well life happened…I got married and had my first child. At that point, I started to realize I was missing everything with him.

Financially, not working was not an option for our family. But, I did miss all my son’s first steps, words, and everything a new mom wants to be there for. In my position as an executive with the company, I couldn’t take the time off I needed if my son was sick or needed me. It was definitely frowned upon.

So when the company I was working for was sold and we all had to look for new work, I decided that it was the chance I was waiting for to go out on my own and do residential design.

My husband was already in the blinds business and working on his own. Everyone we knew questioned why we weren’t working together. Short of it was, I wanted to stay married.

With his blessing, I ventured out on my own and started a blind, shade, and design business of my own in Central Bucks County, PA. My own name, may own location, my own accounts, my own clients. It was tough, but I learned on the fly. A few months after opening, I didn’t feel well and couldn’t figure out why. I was pregnant with my second child. Surprise! I learned to adjust my business around my home life. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.

One day, my husband and I chose to take a day trip to New York City to look for new vendors. We got our kids off to school and started on our way. It was all a perfect plan, until…the school closed early for a half day.

The school office could not reach any of our

emergency contacts. If I could have rented a helicopter that day to get to my kids, I would have. All I could picture was them standing on the sidewalk, all alone, crying with no one to take care of them, and everyone at the school having gone home. Well, like most things in life, we got a friend to pick them up and all was well. As my children got a little older, things definitely got a little easier.

We moved down here to south Jersey and opened a business in Ocean City. Six years later, we opened a second store in Central Square, Linwood. As things turned out, months after opening the Linwood store, my husband and I divorced and I found myself on my own. It was time to focus, work hard, and believe in myself.

Eight years later, I’ve established a successful clientele. This year I made a bold move to relocate to another suite within Central Square (Suite 28) Stop by and see me.

Bottom line is, nothing in life worth having is easy. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, right? So be a non-conformist, think outside the box, don’t get into debt, and make it work for you. You will be surprised how wonderfully supportive some people can be when you let them in on this wonderful journey you’re about to embark upon.

Belief in Oneself is Base of Business Growth

hen the band Journey first sang Don’t Stop Believin’, I am fairly certain they did not think they would ever be quoted in a business column. However, over the years, the song has become synonymous with keeping your dream and belief alive even through less than ideal situations.

Business and success in business can be challenging and diffi cult at times. There will be times when your well-crafted plan does not match up with the reality you expected or hoped would occur. The reality you expected may have also hinged on other people’s actions and there follow through. Conditions and people have a tendency to change. When this occurs it can test your mental fortitude as well

as bend (but hopefully not break) your will to carry out your vision of developing and running a successful business.

One of the most basic ways to counteract and work through those feelings of uncertainty is to go back to one basic belief. That is the belief in yourself and that feeling and of course vision you set out to make a reality. Remember what drove you to make the decision or to take the leap of faith in the first place. Just the simple step of revisiting those feelings and maybe even dusting off your original plan could help off set the feelings of doubt during difficult times.

After spending nearly two decades assisting individuals to help make their business dream a reality, one thing became clearer to me with each year of experience in the consulting field. Those that continued to believe in themselves were able to overcome the challenges more times than not.

Here are a few basic tips to keep in mind to help keep you believing in yourself as well as your business as well as a few reminders to the reality of business: • Believe in your own personal abilities, skills and experience.

• Do not let the lack of belief from others affect your belief in yourself.

• Locate your business plan or recreate a simple plan including your original vision for your business and the things, you felt at the time, made you capable of starting and growing your business.

• Revisit what inspired and motivated you to start and grow your business as often as needed.

ail Rosenthal said when she was a teen she worked at Faber's in Atlantic City for the holidays. In the summers, she worked at various retail stores on the boardwalk. She knew she loved working with people and when the opportunity came up to buy Faber’s, she purchased.

“With 30 years of experience in graphic design, I am able to utilize my talents to help customers with personalized stationary and invitations for weddings, bar/ bat Mitzvah, showers, and special occasions,” Rosenthal said of her shop Joelle’s Card & Gift Boutique in Linwood.

Rosenthal’s typical day consists of a lot of work.

“Work, work, work, and more work. It is a lot more work than most people would expect, including myself. I usually start my day by making phone calls regarding orders received, broken items, backordered items, and mistakes

on orders and/or invoicing,” she explained. “Throughout the day I enjoy waiting on customers and giving them personalized service, doing my best to help them find exactly what they are looking for.”

Another part of her day consists of checking new arrivals and/ or cards, pricing and putting them out on display. With that comes reorganizing displays to make everything look pleasing to the eye, and getting everything to fit.

“On occasion I meet with various sales reps looking for new products to keep my inventory fresh,” she said. “If time allows, I work on creating orders, calling them in, and creating ads for newspapers and emails.”

But Rosenthal said she wouldn’t be able to do it all without the assistance from Lisa and Pat. The most exciting part of her journey as a business owner is easy, she said.

The customers are amazing and providing them with the personal-

ized service they deserve makes all of the hard work worth it.

“Getting to know and meet so many new people, including all of the other storeowners, has been an incredible experience,” she remarked.

But like with so many businesses so much goes into it. One of the biggest challenges for Rosenthal is definitely time management, she said.

Her goal for the store is to continue finding items that are unique and different from those found in other gift shops.

“Cards are a large part of my business, so I keep a very eclectic variety of cards by purchasing from approximately 10-15 different companies. Another large part of Joelle's is the toys we sell from Melissa and Doug. We carry the largest selection in the area and have the ability to get anything within a couple of days, or have items drop shipped to where ever the customer needs it to go,”

Rosenthal said. “We also take a lot of pride is providing free beautiful gift-wrapping.”

Joelle’s does invitations for all occasions and offers 20 percent off any orders over $100.00. It’s nice to sit and relax while picking out that perfect invitation for a wedding, bar/bat Mitzvah, etc. Currently, all holiday card orders are being filled.

Her advice to those thinking about opening a business is this: “Do your homework; make sure the product you are selling is a needed product for that area,” Rosenthal said. “Make sure you love what you are doing and have a lot of patience. Be prepared to make it your life. I personally love being in the store and the amazing customers I have, but it is not for everyone.”

inda L'Erario loves her job as much today as she did 25 years ago when she first opened Lindy Hops in Galloway. " I love what I do and I have the best customers, the nicest people you could ever meet," says L'Erario.

"I've watched the kids grow up and I feel like I have an extended family.

A childhood nickname given by a cousin inspired the name Lindy Hops. The bubble gum pink decor was inspired by a 50's clock that still hangs in the shop.

Everything at Lindy Hops is homemade including all the ice cream, water ice and even the whip cream.

Tuckahoe Brewery Plans To Unite Community Through "The Art Of Beer"

t was six-years-ago when Rob Callaghan of Northfield began seeing Mike Bell walking his dog through the neighborhood. Soon afterwards, they met and have become friends. Callaghan discovered that his friend Mike worked as a graphic artist for 24 years, and a fine artist for nine.

Callaghan serves as the Sales Manager for Tuckahoe Brewery, located on the corner of Reega and English Creek Ave. Right across the street from a stretch of the Atlantic County Bikepath. The two began collaborating.

Bell has designed a variety of labels that Craft Beer fans have seen on the brewery’s cans.

Callaghan and Bell have decided to combine their love for Craft Beer and Fine Art. They’ve gathered local artists for an art gallery entitled, “The Art Of Beer,” which will be held from 6-9pn on Nov. 2nd.

The two were driven to put on an art gallery as an event for the local community, and to showcase works in the South Jersey art industry that aren’t necessarily known of by the public.

frequent visits to art galleries while living in Rochester, NY. He says events like this aren’t always around the area, and also that local events leave the area after the summer season departs.

“Every month, they had that first Friday which was happy hour at the art gallery,” said Callaghan. “You’d get to look at the artist on display, or multiple artists on display. You don’t see a lot of that around here. It’s apart of a sense of places, and who’s who around here.”

“The South Jersey artists are very hungry to get their artwork out there and have shows,” Bell added. “The art scene in South Jersey could really use a boost and have more events for people to show their artwork. It was really nice for the brewery to accept that show, and I think it’s going to be a great show.”

Bell says that the industry of Craft Beer isn’t just about drinking beer. The artistry of different Craft Beer labels makes up a good portion of how Craft Beer is enjoyed by fans. The artwork on labels help brand a type of beer, and make it appealing for people to purchase.

Callaghan and Bell both agree that artwork is essential to the Craft Beer industry, and are bringing along 13 local artists to join in on the artwork of beer. Each piece of work shown will be directly related to beer or have a reference to beer in it, which is how the name, “The Art Of Beer” was chosen.

The Hurley Line: State, County & Local Races Two Weeks Before the general Election

T

he long, arduous and ugly campaign season is about two weeks to the Tuesday, November 6, 2018 finish line.

Here is The Hurley Line regarding the current standing of the key national, county and local races here in Southern in New Jersey.

United States Senator Bob Menendez is in the toughest race of his long electoral career with Republican Nominee Bob Hugin throwing campaign hay makers at him on a 24/7 basis.

Hugin has scorched the Earth for months with a constant loop of Menendez' clouded and controversial past being framed in sharp, hyper-negative, concise 30-second sound bites around the clock.

Hugin is the first Republican in 50 years to possess the economic prowess and the good political fortune of a perfect political storm atmosphere required for a Republican to win a United States Senate seat in dark blue New Jersey.

Still, with Menendez being a significantly damaged and flawed candidate, he still leads in the run-up to the final days of Decision 2018. The lead is anywhere from low to medi-

Republican Seth Grossman, a former Atlantic City councilman and Atlantic County freeholder, and State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1) debated in a forum at the Campus Center Theatre in the Stockton University campus in Galloway Township on Wednesday, Oct. 10. um-range single digits.

This means that Hugin still has significant work to do if he's going to close the deal. But, he's given himself a legitimate chance to pull-off the upset. Typically, the Republican Nominee would have long ago been vanquished.

Win or lose, Hugin may turn-out to be a major factor in the down-ballot races. He leads Menendez in Atlantic and Cape May Counties.

The race for The United States House of Representatives in District 2 also favors the Democrat, for the first time in nearly a Quarter-of-a-Century. New Jersey State Senator Jeff Van Drew, D-1 has been the prohibitive front-runner since the day he announced his candidacy on November 28, 2017.

Van Drew ran the perfect Primary Election campaign, whereby multiple challengers tried to take him on from the hard left and Van Drew didn't bite.

He dominated the field, without having to take extreme liberal positions.

His opponent, local attorney Seth Grossman pulled off a Primary Election shocker that only myself and a few others saw coming. Grossman ran a master class final stretch and dominated Atlantic County and dispatched the heavily favored Hirsh Singh to become the Republican Nominee.

The national media crushed Grossman for weeks in the beginning of the General Election campaign in attempt to put him away. Make no mistake about it, all over America, the national media has been openly

providing campaign assistance for Democratic candidates. The media has surrendered any illusions of being objective. They desperately want a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.

To his credit, Grossman weathered the storm and pushed onward.

During the formative phases of this campaign, Van Drew opened a lead of 20-23 points. This pushed Grossman to employ a warp-speed, sharp series of negative attacks against Van Drew.

Grossman is feverishly attempting to erode Van Drew's reputation as a conservative Democrat and turn him into a Nancy Pelosi/Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez socialist-style Democrat.

ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson MEDICINAL MARIJUANA; HOW MUCH TO TAKE AND IN WHAT FORM TO TAKE IT? Part II Delivering Cannabis by Smoking Some medical concerns about smoking cannabis point to the 700 or so compounds found in the ower, turning into thousands of compounds when combusted and inhaled into the lungs. Backes 2017 noted that some known carcinogens are found among these chemicals. These toxins are linked to pulmonary disease and cancer “in tobacco users”, not cannabis users. This is important, UCLA researchers have not found that long term use, or chronic smokers of cannabis, were found to NOT have an increased risk or incidence of head, neck, or lung cancers. But this doesn’t mean “no risk”.

A cannabis cigarette may deliver 27% THC out of the high amount that is available in the sample. Glass pipes may deliver about 50% of that available. A couple light puffs should give enough of a dose where deep inhaling and holding would not be necessary. So, a quick inhale then a quick exhale of the cannabis smoke. This is not a recommendation to smoke cannabis, but if you are going to smoke it then knowledge is needed, and care should be taken.

We just discussed smoking and vaping medicinal marijuana but what about using sublingual tinctures or oils?

What is a tincture? For our purposes it is a small 1 oz. or 1/2 oz bottle with a liquid that has a strong alcohol-based oil containing cannabis derived from plant material (Or more simply, soak some weed in alcohol for a month then squeeze it real hard and “presto” you have a cannabis extract (kind of). Some extracts are so strong that you can nd 100mg cannabinoid in one ml oil (1oz has about 30ml per 1 dropper full so that’s about 30 dropper full). So one

These are likely one of the best ways to get it into your circulation because of the lack of stomach digestive properties which reduces the potency of your medicinal marijuana. We may have transdermal patches one day, Patchtek as example, they are currently being researched and could be used to treat: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and MS spasms.

It's a very heavy lift, since Van Dew has spent the past 27 years earning his reputation. However, it is the only "play" that Grossman can make to carve into the large Van Drew lead.

Grossman is running as an unapologetic President Trump, "Make America Great Again" Republican. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District in November, 2016 by 7 points.

Van Drew remains a prohibitive favorite to win the seat being vacated by 12-term United States Congressman Frank LoBiondo. For LoBiondo's part in this race, he has not directly supported or opposed Grossman. LoBiondo will only say that he "supports the Republican ticket."

Grossman did not support LoBiondo during his career in the United States Congress. LoBiondo is paying back the favor in a more subtle way.

A full-throated, motivated LoBiondo could have been very helpful to Grossman. It was never going to happen, based on their past together.

Van Drew has openly and publicly pledge not to vote for Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker of The House (should the Democrats win back the majority).

Van Drew has also pledged not to vote to impeach President Trump.

Van Drew did stumble into the Brett Kavanaugh SCOTUS process.

It's the only self-inflicted error that Van Drew made in an otherwise flawless Primary and Election season campaigns.

In Atlantic County, there are 3 seats open for the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Chairman Frank Formica (at large) and current Freeholders James Bertino (District 5) and Maureen Kern (District 2) remain the favorites to win re-election.

If Democrats (Celeste Fernandez (at large), Maureen Leidy (District 2) and Barbara Butterhof-Rheault (District 5) sweep the election, the Democrats would gain majority-control of the Board for the first time in decades, if ever.

The County Democrats are running that they can work better with the state leaders and can be more effective than the Republicans. They have consistently run on national and state issues that basically have nothing to do with the duties of a County-level Freeholder.

They are banking that the electorate won't know the difference. Some believe that the district is swinging more to the left from a political ideology standpoint. Complicating matters further is the election ballot itself; which features races for United States Senator and Congress (District 2) before voters will make their choices for the County and local races.

There's two key local races to watch in Atlantic County. In Egg Harbor Township, I am forecasting that former Atlantic County Sheriff Frank Balles and his running mate, Andrew Parker, III will win. They're running against Democrats Crystal S. Mays and Nadine M.V. Flynn.

In Hamilton Township, the races have been 50-50 propositions for the past 10 years. The winners are typically decided by less than 15 votes, following thousands of votes cast. Cuurent Mayor, Republican Art Schenker is running with Robert Laws. Current Democratic incumbent Rodney Guishard is running with attorney Kari Spodofora. This race should be as close as the previous several past elections, whereby the second seat is usually not known until all absentee and provisional ballots are counted.

Another key local race that has turned hyper-negative over phony allegations about campaigning at a local church ... is the Brigantine Mayor/City Council campaign for three open seats.

Despite all of the irrelevant bluster by certain ugly partisans, Republican Nominee Andy Simpson is poised to succeed the long-time, retiring Mayor Phil Guenther. The Democratic candidate for Mayor is Rick Delucry. Delucry is an impressive candidate and has been successful multiple times running for City Council.

Republican incumbents Vince Sera and Mike Riordan are favored for re-election over Democratic challengers Denise Hakanson and Jerry Szucs, a former Brigantine Democratic Club and Municipal Chairman.

Absecon City Council, Ward 2 features Democrat incumbent Sandra Cain vs. Republican challenger Keith Grodziak.

The Buena Borough Council race presents two "walk-over" candidates as Republican incumbents Rosalie Baker and Joseph Mancuso, Jr. are running unopposed.

In Hammonton, Republican Mike Torrissi, Jr. is running for re-election, with Republican Rock Colasurdo. There are three Independent candidates running: Sam Rodio (for the 6th time), Jonathan Oliva (first-time candidate) and Dane Wuillermin (first time candidate).

The top three finishers will win seats on City Council. I predict that Torrissi and Colasurdo will win. I have no idea who will capture the third seat; but, the 6th time may be the "charm."

Linwood City Council features: 1st Ward Republican first-time candidate June Byrnes is running unopposed.

Ward 2 is a race between incumbent Todd Gordon vs. Katherine Friedman.

Mullica Township has two open seats for Township Committee. Firsttime Republican candidate William Cornell and two first-time Democrat candidates: Joseph West and Leanna Mullen will vie for the open seats.

Northfield City Council: Ward 1 features Republican Brian Smith vs Democrat Rick Brozosky. Smith previously was a member of the Northfield City Council from 2009-2011. Ward 2 features Democrat Barbara Madden.

She is running unopposed.

Pleasantville City Council: Democrats Tony Davenport and Lockland Scott are running unopposed in Wards 1 and 2.

Port Republic: Ward 1 features Republican Steven Allgeyer. Ward 2

features Republican Doris Bugdon. Both are running unopposed.

Somers Point City Council: Republican incumbent Ron Meischker is running unopposed, as is 2nd Ward Republican incumbent Howard Dill.

Weymouth Township features Republican incumbent Kenneth Haeser, who is running unopposed.

Cape May County voters will have a voice in the following election contests: United States Senate (seat); United States Congress, District 2 (1 seat); Board of Freeholders (1 seat); Cape May (3 seats); Dennis Township (2 seats); Lower Township (3 seats - Ward 1, 2 and 3); Middle Township (1 seat); North Wildwood (2 seats - Council Ward 1 and 2); Stone Harbor (2 seats - Council) and Upper Township (2 seats - Committee).

The current state of our electoral system can be made no more clear as to ponder how many races are uncontested. This doesn't even include the number of school board elections which are garnering no candidates whatsoever.

If this doesn't stop, we are going to pay a heavy price with regards to the present blood sport of stooping so low as to try and ruin the lives of candidates in our electoral and appointive process.

Why will quality candidates ever be willing to put the names on the election ballot, when these are the gutter tactics being regularly employed?
