I

From the Editor f you live the average lifespan of 78.3 years, you are likely to interact with 80,000 people in your lifetime. That is 3 new interactions a

day.

Each interaction offers an opportunity. Often it is just a friendly smile, a business dealing or a helping hand. But occasionally it is someone that becomes very important to you: a spouse or significant other, partner, or close friend.

Most of our interactions happen naturally and occur with ease. Others, well, can be downright painful. But fortunately, those are few and far between.

There was a time when I dreaded meeting new people or entering new social situations, especially forced ones like entering a party or joining a new club or networking group. I considered myself shy and I never seemed to have the confidence that the others radiated. Still, I pushed myself to show up and slowly over time, it has become easier and I’ve gained confidence.

The vast majority of the time, meeting new people is very rewarding. The more people I meet, the more positive interactions, connections, partnerships, and story ideas I get. I nearly always walk away feeling positive about the people I’ve connected with.

After watching the news on television

though, I usually feel quite the opposite, like the world has completely gone crazy.

Yet every time that I am out and about in our community, I meet so many kind, unique, talented, and giving people. It becomes clear to me that, regardless of the bad, the negative, and the division, there is still overwhelmingly more good.

Shore Local is thankful for the community connections that we have made and we continue to strive to make more.

We are proud of the great columnists that really understand the dynamics of our area and bring you relevant, interesting, and informational content in each issue.

Shore Local is excited to team up with Joe Massaglia, a successful chef and restaurateur. He heads up the Atlantic County Community College’s Annual gala and hosts the popular radio show, “Joe’s Table for Two.” Joe’s column will tell us all that's cooking here in South Jersey.

Also in this issue, Harry Hurley introduces us to Mark Giannantonio, president and CEO of Resorts Casino Hotel. He has led Resorts through challenging times and forged its success and title as the longest running casino, now celebrating 40 years.

T'S COMING! Finally. It's about time, but the big change I've been touting for a couple weeks now is arriving.

By this weekend, you'll be able to wear sweaters and enjoy pumpkin spice lattes as you walk through the park. No doubt that the front half of October was summer-like. We knew that would happen thanks to the southeast ridge. I told you once it broke down we'd start to tap into the colder, drier air in Canada. I really like how things are shaping up going forward too. The catalyst behind the change? A big-time cold front combined with Hurricane Michael.

The cold front will bring the cooler air, Michael will bring heavy

rain by tomorrow and early Friday.

It made landfall today in Florida bringing massive flooding and rain, as well as severe weather to the east side of it. It's now going to track to the north, bringing torrential rains to the Carolinas, and then skirt off to the northeast. We will escape significant impact but we will still get a piece of the pie.

A couple inches of rain, if it tracks the right way, and some wind too.

is the season for spooks, scares, and YELPs! YELP2 “Bigger, Scarier, Yelp-ier” is in its second year. This Horror Parody Film Camp, created by Cygnus Creative Arts Center Director, Kevin McCafferty is the only camp of its

kind. The camp is for students 7-18 years old, who love horror films, performing, or a combination of the two.

Written and directed by McCafferty, this year's parodies include A Naptime on Elm Street, Halloween 60 Yrs Later, Friday the 13th Part XXXVIII, Evil-ish Dead, The Dancing (A Shining Parody), I Know What You Did Last Halloween, and Yellow Duck (a Black Swan Parody).

McCafferty, who also writes and directs a student-led summer production, explains that the most challenging part of writing a horror-themed film for youth is taking what would normally be a violent or inappropriate scene and making it youth friendly. He strikes a unique balance of horror and comedy in each scene and loves to see the students come out of their shells and into character.

This year the students are learning choreography to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and will record an original production of the music video including a hip-hop twist and mash up of other classic horror theme songs. The music video will be shot outdoors, fully equipped with fog machines,

drones, and special lighting. A team of makeup artists will transform the students with FX prosthetics.

In addition to on-screen acting experience, cast members get the opportunity to perform live (upclose and personal) with an audience during a student-run Haunted Walkthrough…which takes place prior to the movie premiere “It is an awesome and wild sight to see young people, especially boys (who are typically lacking in numbers in the creative artists) embracing choreography because of their love of Halloween and all things scary,” says Kevin McCafferty who has grown the camp from 25 to 37 students this year.

The ‘Family-Friendly’ Premiere of YELP2 will be held on Friday 10/26 and Saturday 10/27 at Cygnus Creative Arts Center, located in the EHT Community Center. The live walkthrough runs from 6pm-6:45pm on both days at a cost of $3. The screening will begin at 7pm and tickets are $5.

Flashed across your screen was a vampire that sprung to life from a casket, a headless woman, monsters and other assorted ghouls. Creepy pipe organ music blared with the narrator an-nouncing “It’s Alive!”

As a kid arriving to the scene, intima-tion quickly set in. Towering 5 stories high and 200 feet out over the Atlantic was The Brigantine Castle. Maybe it was how the waves seemed angry around the pier. Under it, the water seemed deep, dark and cold.

The seagulls didn’t squawk, they shrieked.

Admission was $3.75 and the av-erage tour took 22 minutes through the fi ve-story citadel, if you weren’t running for your life by an axe wielding demon. The “demons” were mostly young college students, a perfect role for a drama major. Dressed as vampires, witches and werewolves with green glow makeup, fake blood and tattered costumes, the actors chased the guests through a dark maze of spe-cial eff ects.

Before the season, they spent countless hours preparing new acts, sets and costumes. They

kept the guests returning by changing the performances each summer. Success was measured by how many guests could be frightened out of their wits. Among the castle’s most memorable attractions was the rat room, a pitch-black hallway where “man-eating rats” scurried about the fl oor.

largely due to the extensive advertising in Philadelphia, North jersey and New York. Charter buses brought visitors by the thousand. While business was good for the castle and nearby businesses like the arcade across the street, island residents soon got tired of the traffi c, vandalism and unruly tourists. The castle facilities were not adequate to handle so many. Kids were knocking on doors asking to use their bathroom. This led to a law suit. Then, in 1984, a fi re at Six Flags Great Adventure hunted house killed 8 children.

Right before it was about to be dismantled, a massive blaze destroyed it, burning The Brigantine Castle to the ground. The new owner could not build on the damaged pier foundation. All that remained on the North 14th street beach were the burnt pilings, which were even-tually removed or covered with sand. Perhaps it’s the demise of the castle that adds to the legend.

The ruins, shortly after the fire pushed through holes in the wall with record-ings of shrill squealing and scratching piped in.

Attendance was tremendous when it opened in 1976. The castle was drawing nearly a million tourists annually. This was

Halloween Traditions Past and Present

O

ctober means decorations of pumpkins, dried corn stalks, bales of hay, pots of colorful mums, and circular wreaths of orange and black show up on lawns, porches, and doors everywhere. Halloween is just a few short weeks away.

The earliest origins of Halloween can be traced back over 2,000 years ago to the Ancient Celtic Irish festival of Samhain. The basic thought was that an end of summer “party” would create a barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits who have passed. The festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark, cold winter that was to come. In later years, the day would become known as All Hallows Eve – the day before November 1st, All Saints Day. As more people from other coun-

tries arrived on our shores, many different traditions were shared. This turned the essential dark, mystical, and supernatural event into a fun, family-shared celebration.

Carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns has been a tradition for decades.

The idea originated more than one hundred years ago in Ireland, when the first jacko’-lanterns were made from turnips or potatoes. When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered pumpkins, and hence, a new tradition was born. Today, pumpkin carving has become a work of art, with displays and contests for skilled and amateur craftsmen.

Handing out small pieces of candy and chocolate to trick-or-treaters has become a custom, but that wasn’t always the case. In the 1930s, children were given coins, cookies, small toys, pieces of fruit, and nuts.

It wasn’t until the 1950s when candy manufacturers began marketing their products. Candy was the most affordable option during that time. Chocolate manufactures grew on the trend in the 1970s and began selling bite-sized

versions of their most popular treats.

The practice of trick-or-treating goes back to the middle ages, when some adults and children would dress in costume, and go door-to-door reciting songs or verses in exchange for food. This practice was commonly

known as “souling” and the children were called “soulers.” The tradition grew in popularity around the 1920s when young kids would go door-todoor and perform a party trick, song, or joke to receive candy. Since that time, it has become the custom to dress up in fun, sometimes scary, costumes. Houses are often decorated with colorful lights and pumpkins aglow.

As a new generation builds on the idea of trick-or-treating, “Trunk-ortreats” have become a recent trend.

Churches, non-profits, or community groups will hold an event in a parking lot, and people will decorate their open trunks and pass out candy to trick-or-treaters. Not only do car enthusiasts get to show off their sporty vehicles, but it allows children an opportunity to trick or treat in a safe environment.

Spooky or just fun, corn mazes are another relatively new fall attraction. The first corn maze was created in 1993 at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania as a school fundraiser. This activity has become popular in recent years, allowing small farmers to supplement income and attract customers to the pumpkin fields.

Corn mazes range in various themes, lengths, and difficulty levels.

Whether you are young or old, watching a scary movie at home, attending parades, corn mazes, parties, or trick-or-treating, these Halloween traditions are rich in history and sure to be enjoyed by all.

Hamilton Mall honors Veteran Lou Green

Veteran Lou Green has volunteered his time to share information for veterans for nearly 2 decades.

ou Green has been coming to Hamilton Mall once a month for almost 18 years - not to shop, but to provide information to veterans and their families.

“If I can be of assistance and relay information to another veteran, I’m going to do it,” says Green, who served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1956 in the Air Force.

Green established a phone list of numbers along with additional information that is helpful. He talks with veterans and their families, helping to assist them in any way he can. Often he assists with the necessary paperwork in order for a veteran to recieve his or her health benefits.

Hamilton Mall Marketing Manager, Crystal Rodriguez, honored Lou Green today with a plaque and gift card in the same spot in the mall that he has been frequenting on the first Wednesday of every month for nearly two decades.

“Lou’s dedication and loyalty are exceptional. It’s really important that

we recognize those who support our community,” says Rodriguez.

“I would not be able to do what I do without the help of my wife, Angela,” says Green.

Having retired from the state criminal courts two years ago, Angela often writes letters and assists Lou with phone calls. Green

learned about health care benefits for veterans, just without a set time or place. In his pocket is a list of important phone numbers ready to share whenever he has the opportunity.

few months ago, in one of my very first columns, I noted a new non-profit organization had recently been founded to help restore the Somers Mansion, the oldest building in Atlantic County. This new group was necessary because, in the decades since it’s renovation, the site has fallen into disrepair and, because it is owned and managed by the state, it is not eligible for grants. Over the last few months, considerable progress has been made in the process of establishing the group, and towards the planning of the needed restoration of the site. As Treasurer of the group, I am pleased to report that the Patriots for the Somers Mansion is now recognized by the IRS as a 501c3 organization, enabling tax-deductible

of supplies, which the local Benjamin Moore Paint Store has kindly agreed to contribute.

There are now plans to hold a workshop in the next several months where the community can come together to paint the wall.

But there is no need to wait until that event to help the Patriots for the Somers Mansion. The inaugural event is coming up on Saturday, October 13, from 1pm to 4pm, at 939 Bay Ave. in Somers Point, the historic location of Tony Mart’s, now home to the House of Booze.

Once restored fully, visitors will be able to take guided tours of the site and safely step out onto the walkway. During the next several years we hope to begin renovating the single-story rear section of the building. This was part of a nineteenth-century addition to the structure and later served as the living quarters of a state-appointed site caretaker. The hope is to transform it into a classroom and an area for exhibitions. We also look forward to continuing to work closely with other community organizations on specific parts of the larger endeavor, such as creating an Eagle Scout project where they will build an info kiosk at the site.

I personally hope we can connect with woodworking artists to craft roughhewn period pieces, enabling a colonial era of interpretation, while letting visitors touch objects—creating a place where old meets new.

Josie Kelly’s Public House Vegging at the Shore

I

f there is one word I like when it comes to restaurants, it’s unconventional.

Several times while talking to Kathleen Lloyd, co-owner of Josie Kelly’s Public House, she used this word and each time she did, it made me like her and the restaurant more. Josie Kelly’s has only been open for six weeks but in some ways it feels like it has always been in Somers Point. One thing is for sure, it is here to stay.

Typically when I think of Irish fare, images of heavy meat dishes come to mind. When creating the menu for the new restaurant she opened with her husband, Dermot, Kathleen felt very strongly about wanting non-meat options to please both vegetarians and carnivores. One of their best selling dishes is the garden pie, and I can tell you from experience, it is worth the trip. I can’t imagine deviating from ordering this every time I go there. The vegan pie has lentils,

carrots, celery, peas, leeks, thyme, gravy, and a savory mashed potato crust. It is vegan perfection. Vegetarians may also enjoy faux gras, a vegetarian take on foie gras made of cashews, shallots, beets, mushrooms, and vegan butter. Standard Irish far is plentiful on the menu such as bangers and mash, fish & chips and burgers.

So how did Kathleen and Dermot come to open Josie Kelly’s? Kathleen is a native of Ventnor and the couple was previously living in Atlanta where Dermot was overseeing two regional locations of RiRa, an Irish pub chain. Wanting to return to this area and open a place of their own, all the stars aligned when the former Sandi Pointe restaurant became available.

Named after Demot’s Nana, Josie Kelly, the restaurant pays homage to where she came from in Adare, Ireland. Pictures of her hometown decorate the walls.

Josie Kelly’s is full of twists and turns.

When you first enter, you will find yourself in a bar area with beautiful communal seating tables. Kathleen told me tales of how customers who don’t know each other often end up striking up conversations and sometimes even offering strangers a taste of their food. The bar area leads to another spacious room of seating.

Upstairs is a hidden gem of a room soon to be a whiskey bar offering small tapas-like plates of food. On the main floor is a ballroom which is used for special events.

While some may ask why they opened towards the end of the summer, Dermot and Kathleen are perfectly fine with the timing of their opening because they are a neighborhood restaurant and pub, serving the year-round community as well as the seasonal customers.

One thing you won’t find is a phone number for Josie Kelly’s. While this at first struck me as odd, Kathleen explained that they want patrons to walk in and be greeted by someone who

is present and not on the phone. Obviously, without a phone, they can not accept takeout orders which may come further down the line. For now, if you want to try Josie Kelly’s you will need to dine in the restaurant.

They are looking forward to participating in Somers Point Restaurant Week from November 2nd-11th. Also, keep an eye out for new happy hour drink and appetizer specials from 4-7pm during the week.

5 Fun Facts For Fall

utumn is a season of many changes, with some of the most notable including the dramatic multicolored displays that occur just prior to trees shedding their leaves. It's also a time of year when many people feel reenergized by cooler temperatures and spend many hours outdoors enjoying all that fall has to offer.

Whether one is collecting leaves, picking apples, exploring corn mazes, or driving the countryside enjoying the foliage, autumn is full of fun facts that can make the season that much more enjoyable.

Autumn begins on the autumnal equinox, which occurs on or near September 22 in the northern hemisphere. This year, September 22 is the day when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. When the equinox occurs, there are an equal number of daylight and nighttime hours.

Since ancient times, autumn has been an important time of year for many civilizations. Autumn is a main harvesting time in many areas, and a successful harvest was once

necessary for survival. Many steps are, and have long been, taken to ensure a bountiful autumn harvest.

Fall is a time when trees and other plants prepare for dormancy during winter. As autumn progresses and the hours of daylight gradually decrease, trees begin to close down their food production systems and reduce the amount of chlorophyll in leaves. Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes tree leaves green, and as it declines, other chemicals become more prominent and shine through in the leaves. That is why leaves change color.

Some scientists believe that global climate change can impact autumn colors, such as delaying the change in trees. Also, red pigments may start to decline as trees use sugary fuel to grow new twigs rather than to cause red leaf displays.

Americans more readily refer to this time of year as fall, while the British use autumn. Both terms date back to around the 16th century.

Prior to this period, autumn was known as harvest.

ello readers! I’m pleased to be a new contributor to Shore Local, and I look forward to being a part of this publication on a regular basis.

I’ve been a chef and restaurateur for over 50 years, 40 of those here in South Jersey. Many of you are familiar with me and my restaurants, but if not, let me introduce myself.

I was born in the northwest region of Piedmont in Italy

and started my training at age 14 in my brother’s butcher shop. I then worked for the finest hotel companies in Europe before deciding to see the world by embarking on the Pacific Princess' Sea Venture cruise ship for 5 years. You may recall this ship became famous as the Love Boat in the early 1970’s television show, and it truly was the Love Boat for me because I met my wife, Christine, onboard during my last cruise!

My U.S. career started in two Central Pennsylvania hotels, but my career really took off when famous Philadelphia entrepreneur and restaurateur, Peter Van Stark, asked me to manage La Panetiere restaurant during the “Philadelphia Restaurant Renaissance.” I then came to Atlantic City to manage first-class restaurants, including Steve Wynn's Victoria Restaurant at the former Golden Nugget, and the Baron Hilton Steak House at Donald Trump's

former Trump Marina.

For the past 30 years, I have been the proud chef-owner of the one and only original Mama Mia’s Ristorante in Seaville, soon to be relocated to the Shop Rite shopping center in Marmora in early 2019 – stay tuned! In late September I reopened my newest restaurant; Eat @ Joe’s, a “casual foodery”, in EHT on W. Jersey Avenue, previously known as the original Mama Mia’s of EHT. Both restaurants serve traditional Italian dishes collected from my family recipes as well as my travels all over Italy, along with new takes on those traditional dishes.

I also will be writing recipe-related columns and include my recipes (or one from a favorite restaurant) for you to try at home.

One Very Busy Mother Who Has Found Success … Doing It All

chased her dream, “I performed throughout my elementary, middle and high school days and even into college in every show the schools presented.”

However, her career did not blossom after college. “I moved to Los Angeles (LA) when I was 21 to pursue the dream, but at that age I was rather aimless so I was waiting tables hoping to be discovered. I was an extra in a couple of things and was in an Independent film but to be honest, I wasn’t truly pursuing it I was just enjoying being twentyone in LA.” After a couple of years of chasing her dream things changed. “I wasn’t really enjoying it and felt the need to have a 401K and health benefits so I went and got a real job as a consultant for a wireless telecommunications company which I did for a number of years then finally moved back home. It was during that time

of directors for the Garden State Film Festival, New Jersey's Premier Independent Film Festival. She produced, co-wrote and co-stars in the award-winning short film "House Broken", which is available to rent or own on Amazon and Amazon Prime as of October 1st!

When asked how and when she decided to become an actor, O’Scanlan replied with a giggle, “The first time I thought about it was when I was about three years old I was watching Donny and Marie on television and my dad had a microphone that he hooked up to our system so I could sing along and that was the first time I knew I wanted to perform.”

O’Scanlon’s acting career was something that she always thought she would once again go after once she was done having children and raising their family. A few years later that thought process became a reality. “Declan and I decided that we were not going to have anymore children and things were going wonderful at home so I guess you could say I gave birth to my new acting pursuit. I started back in community theater here in Monmouth County. During my first audition I was so nervous and scared

but the minute I stepped out on the stage and under the lights I knew this is where I belong. I knew I was home,” quickly adding with a burst of laughter “poor Declan did not know what he was getting into!”

O’Scanlon is on the Board of Directors of the Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) the premier film festival for Independent Films. GSFF was held in Atlantic City for a number of years but has recently moved to Asbury Park, NJ. “I got involved with the GSFF about four years ago when I was acting in a commercial. Lauren Concar Sheehy was the producer and we were talking about the festival and she said you should come, so Declan and I went to the last night and met some wonderful people and had a great time. You know, as a politicians wife, we go to a lot of fundraisers and you always hope it will be a good and warm experience. In the case of the GSFF it pushed all the right buttons for me.

a part.”

It’s a balancing act trying to manage a family, home, support both her husbands and her own career at the

same time. O’Scanlon admits, “I am better at it some days than others,” she said with a giggle. “It all begins with family ... family always comes first. After the family is settled I divide the rest of my time with all those things that need to get done. I don’t get a lot of sleep sometimes, but I love my life even when my kids see me on screen or in a commercial and I get the … oh gee mom eye roll.”

Heather Brittian O’Scanlon recently filmed a co-star role on Blue Bloods (CBS) which is believed to air the last week of October. (It is the fifth episode this season). She will be making the festival circuit in several new films including, "Tom's Dilemma", a feature directed by Miguel Gluckstern, and produced by the Sundance award-winning Darren Dean ("The Florida Project", "Tangerine"), "As It Seems", a Nancy Menagh film, in which Heather has the lead role, the Vimeo Staff Pick "At The End Of The Cul-De-Sac", a Paul Trillo film which was featured in TIME Magazine and premiered at the Palm Springs International Film

Festival 2017, and "Therapy, Bro", directed by John Hedlund and starring Francesco Nuzzi ("Star Crossed Lovers", Wally Marzano-Lesnevich ("Almost Paris") and Garry Pastore (HBO's "The Deuce").

ark Giannantonio is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

He is the senior executive responsible for one of the greatest turnaround stories in Atlantic City casino history. The story has never really been told before. This issue, we'll tell the story in a question and answer format.

It may seem like a lifetime ago, however, during the Great Recession of 2008 and beyond, Resorts Casino Hotel was regularly referred to as the likely first casino that would be forced to close its doors. At the time, no casino in Atlantic City had ever folded for economic reasons.

timately close their doors.

Resorts was not one of them. How did they defeat this widely held perception?

In this issue, we play 10 Questions with Mark Giannantonio. It will give you direct insight into the mindset of a modest, real winner at work.

1. How did Resorts go from a public perception of the potential danger of closing during the Great Recession ... to such a major turnaround?

Simply put, it was and continues to be the dedicated efforts of our ownership structure, Morris Bailey and his family and Mohegan Sun who allow the property to run to the highest standards possible. We have a great management team and the very best team members in the business.

2. What was it like when all the previous hotel casinos around you closed shop (Taj Mahal, Revel & Showboat)?

It was an unprecedented time.

Because of the correction in the AC market and ultimately the closings, we saw thousands of our colleagues around town lose their jobs. It was a difficult time for many individuals in South Jersey. It clearly strained the fabric of our region 3. Has the Atlantic City Casino gaming jurisdiction been properly right-sized, first during the era of contraction, and now with the recent expansion of two new casinos?

The initial right-sizing of the market, while difficult, was driven by business volume. It afforded the opportunity for the AC Gaming Market to stabilize. It is hard to say regarding the recent expansion. I am optimistic, however, I think the next six months will provide that answer for all of us.

4. Capriccio Restaurant earned the USA Today readers choice award as the # 1 casino restaurant in America. What does this mean for Resorts?

I am so happy that the fine men and woman that work at Capriccio are being recognized at a national level for the exceptional work that they do. The experience that the Capriccio staff provides our guests is very special and rare today. Jorge, Chef Lisa, and the entire staff deserve this honor and I could not be more happy for them. Their efforts reflect well on all of our team members at Resorts.

5. Describe the atmosphere surrounding Resorts 40th Anniversary

year of celebrations?

Beginning on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend the party began for Resorts. As the first casino to open outside of Nevada in 1978, we were ready to celebrate our anniversary in a big way! Our Summer was full of festivities and fun! Looking back now, it was a blur.

6. What makes Resorts a worldclass experience for your guests?

It is our team members. They make our guests feel at home when they are away from home.

7. Your thoughts about Atlantic City’s preparedness to manage the shoulder and off-season months?

Atlantic City is a great regional destination gaming market twelve months a year. With great casino resorts, hotels, world-class dining, and incredible entertainment, Atlantic City has more to offer our guests than almost every other market in the country. I would say we have the amenities and are prepared!

8. What do you see in store for the Atlantic City Hotel Casino market over the next 5-10 years?

I believe outside investment will continue in this market and a level of refinement and experience will continue to be enhanced.

9. What does Resorts owner Morris Bailey mean to Resorts and Atlantic City?

Morris has been the driving force on so many topics that most people do not know. He is the reason why there are nearly 2000 employees working at Resorts currently. He loves Atlantic City and truly cares about her well-being.

10. Who is your favorite “Beatle” (the legendary music group, The Beatles) and why?

Sir Paul. His body of work in amazing. He is a genius. (Hey Jude is my favorite).

Planting Fall Bulbs for a Hopeful Future

P

lanting fall bulbs is an act of faith—hiding treasure in the ground with the hope that it will keep safe through snow and storms, and then produce something beautiful in the spring. It’s fun to think of these little secrets buried and invisible to all. Then suddenly, in April or May, the garden bursts full of life, like the scene from “The Secret Garden.” In early spring, each day something new reveals itself, and you wonder how you ever survived the dreary days of winter. When spring finally does show up, I always kick myself for not planting more bulbs in the fall. Now is the best time to plant spring-blooming bulbs, but even if you are a procrastinator like me, you can usually sneak a few into the ground as long as the soil is still workable and not frozen.

Tulips are among my favorite flowers, with so many colors ranges, a box of Crayolas would be jealous. You can find them in shades of peach, pink, bright red, or yellow,

and even a purple so deep it almost looks black. The varieties are endless, with enough choices to please any style. You can choose from classic single tulips or doubles, which resemble peonies; fringed or the stunning and evocative parrot tulips—worthy of a masterpiece oil painting. Plant the mid to early blooming “Purple Prince” tulip, followed by the mid-season “Pretty Princess,” and you will live a charmed life indeed.

But no good fairy tale can be complete without its villain, so allow me to introduce my nemesis, the squirrel.

Please, no hate mail, squirrel lovers, I’ve been at this too long to let that fuzzy tail fool me. Many hours and gray hairs have been spent trying to keep them away from my precious tulips.

I’ve tried pepper flakes, moth balls, human hair, and chicken wire. Lately, I’ve employed the services of a very large, dopey, but loveable dog. Just when I’ve been about to throw in the towel, a brave, lovely maroon tulip has shown its ability to survive

and —smitten once again—I vow to carry on.

Back in the 1630’s, the tulip was all the rage in the Netherlands and people were worked up into a frenzy culminating in Tulip Mania. At its height, speculators were risking enough money to buy a grand house in Amsterdam for the future ownership of a single, exotic tulip bulb. Oddly, it was a virus in the bulb that caused the colors to be “broken” resulting in their much-coveted variegated pattern of stripes and flames. Sadly, the quest for beauty became a lust for money, and greed turned into disaster as the danger of trading in futures ruined families and fortunes.

In modern times, when gazing at an urn of blooming tulips we can appreciate why they were such a status symbol and caused such a craze. But such beauty can be yours with very little effort and a bit of patience. Plant early, mid, and late blooming varieties for a succession of color.

Many other spring-blooming bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, and alliums can be planted in fall. These flowers have the added benefit of being distasteful to deer, rabbits, and squirrels.

Daffodils are a sure sign of spring. Most years I see daffodils peeking up through the snow and it gives me hope that, even though cold days may still be in the forecast, the

promise of spring is near. In my garden, I have cute clusters of short, yellow daffodils called “Little Gem”. The Latin name for daffodils is Narcissus. As one version of the Greek myth goes, Narcissus was so taken with his own beautiful image reflected in a pool of water, that he wasted away staring We would love to hear your gardening stories. at himself. All that remained in his spot was the flower we now call daffodil. I think it was a pretty good trade. I’m drawn to white daffodils that look so pretty as a backdrop to the small purple flowers of blue grape hyacinth (muscari), another must-have in the spring garden. Both flowers act as a neutral, blending compatibly with most colors. Bright red tulips look striking behind the bluish purple of grape hyacinths, but the soft pink of Angelique tulips paired with the tiny grape flowers are equally stunning. Both daffodils and grape hyacinths will spread, and the more, the better. Don’t plant single flowers in a line, which will look sparse, but stagger your row of flowers or plant in clusters for maximum impact of color.

Another favorite fall bulb to plant is allium. Perhaps you’ve seen this tall flower that’s an orb on a stick. It seems like something you’d see in a Dr. Suess book but it is very pretty, and compliments many other spring flowers. One of my favorite varieties is “Purple Sensation.” Alliums (surprisingly in the garlic family) can also be found in shades of white, pink, and blue.

Be sure to layer your potential flowers, with the taller ones, like allium, in the back and smaller ones, like grape hyacinth, in the front. If you are planting a single type of flower, plant in clusters of three to five bulbs. Keep in mind that, though most spring-flowering bulbs need to be planted in full or filtered sun, you will have more areas available to plant than in your summer garden. In early spring, trees have not yet attained their leaves and much more sun is able to peek through the branches.

Hopefully, you’ve been inspired to get digging. Don’t delay, because “winter is coming”. You won’t regret the results in the spring, and your winter can be a little warmer as your dreams are filled with the hope of a bright, beautiful, and colorful future.

What You Don’t Know Can Destroy You

ere’s a question to get you thinking. Is ignorance really bliss as the saying goes?

We’ve heard it before.

Ignorance is bliss. Some people put it this way. What you don’t know, won’t hurt you. The reality is, when it comes to bettering your business, advancing your career, or your own personal development, ignorance can be downright deadly. Confession time. Almost thirty years ago, I had about a half a dozen years under my belt anchoring television news. And people would tell me, “Jeff you do such a great job. I enjoy watching you on tv.” I’d thank them for their kind words and frequently follow-up with a question. What can I do to improve myself? How can I get better? The trouble was, for most of them that question was something they really weren’t in a position to answer with any authority.

They’d say something like, “you’re doing great. Keep up the good work.” That was not what I wanted to hear. I was looking to better myself and I knew I had so much more to learn and skills to master. I would study other news anchors.

I’d practice the skills I knew to practice.

I’d read public speaking and presentation books and work on improving myself.

While that was all well and good, I could only do so much. I had reached a pla-

teau and couldn’t figure out how to take myself to the next level. I was stuck. I had everyone around me telling me nice things and they meant well and were sincere I’m sure. But their feedback wasn’t helping me get any better and I wanted desperately to get better at my craft.

What I’m going to say next is key to where I want to go with all of this. The reality was, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Have you ever been there before? Someone who knows more than you know on a particular subject shares with you and your response is, “I didn’t know that.” It’s not that you didn’t want to learn something new or grow in one area or another. Many times to the contrary, we want to get better and learn more. But we don’t know what we don’t know. If you can take that one thought and marinate on it for a while, it will be a huge eyeopener in taking you to the next level of where you want to go, and where you need to be in just about every area of your life. The key to growing is to recognize when you arrive at that point, and then have the wisdom to seek out someone who can help you break through to your desired outcome.

Behind Your Metabolism

f you are one of those lucky people who has a fast metabolism, you are both loved and loathed. A fast metabolism usually means that weight loss and/or maintaining your weight is easier than for most people. Although there are ways to speed up your metabolism through diet, exercise, or supplements that can enhance your metabolism, it is certainly a lot easier for those whose metabolisms are not working against them. So why do some people have a fast metabolism? I’m asked that question every day. Most think they have a slow metabolic rate. Once someone is tested for their metabolic rate, they may finally understand their body’s metabolic blueprint and see it’s not so slow after all. Finally, they can achieve those long awaited weight loss goals!

Before explaining why some people have a faster metabolism than others, you first need to understand the role of metabolism in our bodies. Metabolism has two parts: a catabolic reaction and an anabolic reaction. The

catabolic reaction breaks down your food so it can be easily digested and the nutrients can go where they are supposed to in your body.

The anabolic reaction occurs when these smaller, broken down pieces are used to build new tissue and take care of your body.

Basal metabolic rate refers to how fast your body breaks down your food. It is this rate that determines how fast or slow your overall metabolism is and, ultimately, how your body weight is affected. A fast metabolism is considered over the one hundred degree limit. If you are having trouble gaining weight or muscle, that is usually the first sign that you may have a fast metabolism. This may sound good to some, but for people who are underweight, this can lead to some serious health issues. In an attempt to gain weight, it can result in overeating fattening foods which can lead to other problems.

Many people who are trying to gain weight will tend to eat all types of food that are not necessarily good for them.

Genetics certainly plays a part in your body’s metabolism, like it or not. There are three different body types—mesomorphs (those with athletic builds), endomorphs (those with bigger bodies), and ectomorphs (those with very thin builds). Ectomorphs have a distinct build that makes them the most likely candidates to have a fast metabolism. They are often thin with small shoulders,

very little muscle mass, and a delicate frame.

Ectomorphs have a very difficult time gaining weight and putting on muscle due to their overly fast metabolism.

Aside from DNA, there are other causes of a fast metabolism. An overactive thyroid gland, known as hyperthyroidism, is one cause. Nervousness, fatigue, a rapid heart rate, and weight loss are usual signs of hyperthyroidism. A doctor can have your thyroid tested if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and suspect your thyroid is the cause of your speedy metabolism. To better regulate your thyroid health, maybe try an iodine supplement.

Another reason someone may have a fast metabolism is if they smoke. This is just another reason not to pick up this habit ever in your life. In addition to all the other illnesses it can bring on, messing up your metabolism is another issue to add to the growing list. If you’re a smoker, please consider stopping.

If you are under stress, that too can affect your metabolism and speed it up. Both smoking and stress often go hand in hand, so finding a better way to deal with stress and quitting smoking is one cause that you can eliminate through a lifestyle change.

For those who struggle with their weight and have tried just about everything to control it and keep it in check, having a fast metabolism sounds like a dream come true.

But ask someone whose metabolizes food at the speed of light and they will tell you it is not as fun as it sounds. There are disadvantages to having a fast metabolism. People who are overly thin tend to get accused of not eating enough or trying to starve themselves to look the way they do. For women, this is especially difficult to deal with as no woman wants to be looked at as someone with an eating disorder.

Women with fast metabolisms may also experience difficulty with menstruation as their cycles can become irregular.

Another disadvantage of a fast metabolism is that building muscle is much more difficult. Because your body is burning off your food so quickly, there is nothing to fuel muscle growth. The food is pretty much gone before it ever has a chance to be stored and

that means losing important nutrients that assist in muscle growth.

You can slow down a fast metabolism just like you can speed up a slow one. Proper Nutrition and diet is the most important factor when trying to slow things down. There are foods that metabolize slowly like sugars and processed and fried foods. But those are not the healthiest options. Sure, if you have a fast metabolism you can indulge in these foods with little risk of weight gain, but ideally, you want to try to stick with healthier proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to provide your body with some much needed weight.

Getting plenty of sleep also has metabolism-slowing effects as it helps to store the fat in your body. When it comes to exercise, avoid anything too strenuous as you will just burn off what you worked so hard to put on. If you’re used to doing 45 or 60 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill, try reducing to 20 minutes and adding a challenging weight-training routine that limits the number of repetitions to 10-12 per set.

If you suspect that you have a fast metabolism, you can accept it as having something that is the envy of most people, but check with your doctor to make sure that there are no underlying causes that need to be fixed.

While advocating a lifestyle of fatty foods and decreased exercise goes against most expert advice, people with a fast metabolism fall into a category all onto themselves.

You want to make sure that when you do eat foods to gain weight, they are the healthier variety like whole wheat pasta and brown rice as opposed to the “white” foods. Being underweight can lead to unhealthy issues down the road so eating an extra serving of linguini now may save you from a more serious issue later.

Pop Pop in Training

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings e are the joyous grandparents of three beautiful grandchildren ages 4, 2, and 3 months old. The time spent with them is precious and we are often showered with unbridled love and affection. Memories of the activities that we enjoyed with our own children decades ago are rekindled. The 4 and 2 year old bring us books for us to read to them, some of which are the same books we read to our children. The skills they have navigating the television remote, iPad, and cell phones are impressive and I am convinced that they would even be able to program the VCR for us if it still existed in their home. The needs of the 3 month old are the same as the many generations before her and are met in much the same way, thank goodness.

So, babysitting all three for short periods of time is not much of a challenge. We make sure they are fed, rested, and get in some activity. Contraband like lollypops and chocolate is smuggled in (organic, of course). We try to avoid any injuries that would require a phone call to their parents or a trip to a local Urgent Care.

Our first overnight babysitting experience enlightened me to a reality for which I was not fully prepared. Dinner seemed to take on the time frame of a French dining experience, lasting far longer than what I would have imagined. If I had a menu, I would have stressed that there were “no substitutions.” It was a series of trials and errors of what would appeal to their ever-changing tastes and what we had on hand. Things went swimmingly for a while until the 2 year old sat on the sofa to watch TV and the 4 year old said she was in “his spot.” When she wouldn’t move, I guess my angry face upset her so she pulled a blanket over her head and began crying. My efforts to console her were only met with an increase in the decibel level. My wife asked me “what did you do to her,” to which I replied, ”nothing, I just looked at her.” My wife works in a school and to be completely honest, I consider her gifted when it comes to handling children of any age, and has immeasurably

more patience than I do. That being said, I was temporarily relieved of my duties until bedtime. While my wife took care of the baby, I read stories to the older children and left the 4 year old to sleep in his bed. Taking the 2 year old to her bed again resulted in her hysterical crying and wanting to lie with me in her parent’s bed.

Now, I am sensitive enough to realize she missed her parents and this scenario was not normal for her, so some latitude was called for. I laid down with her and began telling her stories about cute little farm animals until her breathing indicated she had fallen asleep. After what seemed like an eternity, I tried to get up as soundlessly as I could only to hear “where are you going, Pop Pop? I want to put my head on your chest.” Back down I went as she snuggled next to me. After a few minutes, she looked up at me and I gently asked her, “What do you want now? You have to get to sleep.” “I love you pop pop” was her reply. Well played, my dear. Well played.

It has to somehow get into the bloodstream in order to get to where you need it to balance our endocannabinoid system). It has to travel through the skin (mouth or lung tissue for example) to get to the brain (indica) or it must get into circulation then to rest of the body where it can work on the joints, muscle, intestine etc…. Areas where Sativa is known to work. But the sativa and indica both get to the brain and need each other to work). One will never find pure sativa because it is always found with Indica in the same plant, always.

So now that you have your brand new shinny medicinal marijuana card in hand, you find yourself standing in a dispensary trying to figure out what to buy, how much will you will need for a dose, and, should you buy: Oil for vaping, tincture or extract for placing under the tongue or swallowing, the lozenges for dissolving in the mouth, butter for rubbing on the skin for absorption, flowers for smoking, or wax for smoking? How much should you dose for yourself?

Some considerations or general guidelines for delivering and dosing cannabis into your body: First figure out how quickly you will want it to work or become effective (how quickly do you want to feel it) Second figure out how long you need it to work in your body (how long do you want it to keep your symptoms at bay) In order to determine this you will need to know how quickly the ingredients get through your tissue barriers ( through the outside skin or the linings of the mouth, throat, stomach, intestine walls ), how quickly the chemicals from the plant material or oil will stay in the body until it no longer works and if you used an edible, how long does it take to pass through all 23 feet of the

large and small intestines (a normal transit time through the small intestines is about 8 hours) not much absorption occurs in the large intestines. For those of you who are still saying that I don’t know anything because I was not a Hippie like you in the sixties cause I was only a 10 year old boy, check this out: You also have to know how many drops of extract to take at a time ( that is, how many milligrams of CBD or THC will be in 3 drops of extract (or oil) or how many milligrams will be in one puff of vape or smoke. So, to determine how much you will need or how strong it needs to be in your body you will need to know how many puffs to take or drops to place in the mouth or swallow or how strong the lozenges should be.

Unfortunately, there is no book to give you information on how much to take for your particular problem.

Let’s look at SMOKING medicinal marijuana. Smoking is the most common and familiar method of using it.

Within 5 to 10 minutes after smoking it, the THC has peaked in your blood. But that amount in your blood may be too high for some. Say you took 2 deep puffs to get it at that level. Now you feel stoned but your pain may be better. It would have been better to have taken one shallow puff to see how that works. In an hour maybe take another shallow puff. At this level of THC in your blood you may feel relaxed and a diminution of your pain (or whatever you are being treated for). If not, do not take more puffs today, take the same dose the next day up to three days. If results still less than optimal increase to two or three shallow puffs (for 2 -3 days). Keep going up as needed. Medical cannabis users shouldn’t need to smoke the entire joint (or bone, or spliff or doobie). One can extinguish it and reuse it later. Be aware that as it is smoked, the CBD, THC and other active ingredients will concentrate in the remaining part of the cigarette which will deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients.

Be sure to connect with the prescribing physician if it’s not working. You may need another strain. “Start low and go slow” and this is with all forms of medicinal marijuana.

AMI Foundation Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Special Events and Free Screening Mammograms

alloway, NJ –October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the healthcare professionals at Atlantic Medical Imaging (AMI), as well as the AMI Foundation, are marking the occasion with two very special events and free screening mammograms.

The free mammograms are for uninsured women ages 40 and older with no current or previous breast issues.

The screening mammograms are available throughout October at all AMI locations in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Monmouth counties, with evening and weekend appointments also available.

The program is made possible through the generous support of the AMI Foundation

and Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey.

Girls Night Out – Wednesday, October 17th at AMI EHT Most women probably don’t associate mammograms with fun, but AMI’s Girls Night Out on Wednesday, October 17th may change all that. Held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Girls Night Out incorporates things women love: pampering, food and drink, and spending quality time with friends.

The event will take place Wednesday, October 17th from 5-8 p.m. at AMI’s Egg Harbor Township office, located at 6529 Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township.

It will include screening mammograms, free mini chair massages and free nail polish change, light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, as well as the opportunity to meet and interact with AMI’s female physicians, technologists and staff. All attendees will be entered in a drawing to win a free spa treatment. Space is limited for the free massages and nail polish change, both of which are available on a first come, first served basis.

Climate change is real. It’s past time to act Opinion by Bill Barlow

e’re screwed, basically.

We don’t need to be, but we are.

This week, the United Nation’s scientific panel in climate change recently issued a report stating things are far worse than we thought. Turning things around is possible, in terms of the laws of physics, but would require completely transforming the world economy.

In a prepared statement on the report, the co-chairwoman of the working group, said “the next few years are probably the most important in our history.”

Temperatures are rising. That means so are sea levels. Most of humanity lives along the coasts, so rising water should seem like a clear and present danger around the world.

According to the UN report, a massive, global effort to reduce carbon emissions could be enough to keep the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius when compared to pre-industrial temperatures. That’s a 2.7-degree difference in Fahrenheit, which really doesn’t sound like much.

On a summer afternoon, who’s going

to run inside and turn on the AC when it jumps from 84 to 86.7? But on a global scale, holding the increase to 1.5C makes the difference between local disasters and global catastrophe, according to the report.

That’s if we act now and work hard.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says keeping the coming increase to 1.5 would require “rapid, far reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.” And we all know that’s just not going to happen, at least not until things get much, much worse.

Think of it like a full-loaded semi trying to make a sharp turn on a mountain road. It might be close, but a good driver could make it, maybe scraping a bumper on the guard rail.

Now image a dozen drivers operating the same truck by occasional, shaky consensus. It’s going to get tighter still. Now imagine some portion of those drivers don’t believe roads

curve, or at least have some overriding interest in pretending they don’t. The road is straight and flat, and all this claptrap about plunging off the side is just some liberal conspiracy to increase spending on brake pads.

Just to be clear, no one competent really doubts that the oceans are rising.

Those oil companies – the ones that spend big money funding groups to sound sincere when they call for more study or sow doubt on opinion pages and talk shows – build sea level rise into their plans for offshore oil platforms. Sea level rise is part of the planning for new infrastructure investment by the US military.

It should be the presumed backdrop for every planning, zoning, drainage and flood control decision we make along the Jersey shore.

There may be a little more room for reasoned debate as to whether it’s our fault. It seems to me pretty

clear that human activity has accelerated the process, but the global climate has changed and changed again over millennia, so it’s not entirely unreasonable to question how much of this is from gasses released by our engines and our cattle, from how much carbon-absorbing greenery we’ve removed from the global equation.

It also seems close to irrelevant.

If there are steps within our reach to correct an obvious and growing problem, do we really need to demonstrate that we caused it? Who looks at a building collapse after an earthquake and says, “well, there’s no proof human activity caused this, so no need for us to clean it up.”

I’m not leaving myself out of all this finger pointing. I still drive a gasoline-powered car. I fly in airplanes when I can afford it and eat food and buy shirts shipped to me by the same global economic system I’m complaining about here. My sharing the blame doesn’t let us off the hook.

It’s not a Chinese conspiracy. It’s not a leftist farce created to hurt business and get donations for the Sierra Club. It’s not the mainstream media lying again. Proof abounds,

from rapidly melting ice caps and retreating glaciers to island nations disappearing from the map with each incrementally higher tide. We on the coast should start taking it seriously.

No projections present climate change as an extinction event for homo sapiens. We survived the ice age. We’re likely to survive our own global success; We’re the world’s apex species, spanning the globe, feeding more people than would have been possible at any previous time in history. Our technology provides comforts and amusements unimaginable to previous generations. But our engines are still mostly run by tiny explosions of fossil fuel, just like the ones Henry Ford built.

The UN report indicates human-induced warming has hit 1 degree Celsius already, and may reach that threshold 1.5C increase by 2040.

Poor people, marginal communities, and yes, the coasts will be hurt the worst.

Storms, wildfires, floods and drought have struck from time to time throughout the entirety of human history. We can’t stop them.

We may be able to keep them from getting worse, just maybe. If we can

stop being so blinkered by partisan loyalties and financial interests to look at what’s really happening and take the difficult steps to try to mitigate its worst effects. At the very least, we could pressure our lawmakers to stop shredding the regulations put into effect to blunt the effects of greenhouse emissions, along with everything else aimed at protecting the environment. Even better, we could revisit the Paris accords and join the flawed and aggravating world community in trying to make things better for future generations.

But we won’t. We can’t even agree on basic, observable facts like crowd sizes or whether that voice on the internet said Yanni or Laurel. We can’t even agree on sources of information, leaving us so disconnected that even the concept of an objective reality subject to empirical proofs seems controversial. That makes it extraordinary unlikely that the nation or the world will suddenly rally together to take the difficult, unpleasant and unprofitable steps needed to cut carbon emissions around the globe before the disastrous effects become undeniable.

In other words, we’re screwed.

f the many wonderful free public libraries in Atlantic County, only The Free Public Library of Atlantic City has a Film Society. The Film Society, founded and run by Theresa Hawkins, who has a degree in film production from Hunter College, meets regularly twice a month. According to a press release, it was there that she met actor Brian Dennehy who visited the Atlantic City Library’s Film Society on Saturday afternoon, September 29th.

Earlier in the day, The Film Society screened the film, The Belly of an Architect, for which Dennehy won a Chicago Film Festival Award. After the screening, Mr. Dennehy met with members of The Film Society

in the main auditorium to discuss the film, which was shot on location in Rome.

As he was discussing the film, Mr. Dennehy explained how he related to the character he played in the film. Dennehy explained that as an actor he, like the architect he portrayed, is always striving for that great and perfect performance.

Dennehy then answered questions about his career and the film from the audience.

In the press release Library Director Robert P. Rynkiewicz expressed, “We’re grateful that he took time out of his busy schedule to visit The Atlantic City Library.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our film society members to gain insight about the industry from such an accomplished actor.”
