Always Changing From the Editor

W

hat a busy week for our family. Our daughter is home for a few days between her internship and the beginning of her final year of college. Our other daughter is preparing to move into her first college apartment. My brother is battling cancer, and has been in and out of the hospital. And our first great niece, sweet Juliette, was born.

It gets chaotic, emotional, and even stressful at times, yet our family is our world. The best things in life are the people we love, the places we have traveled, and the memories we have made together.

The tides change, but the people and the love remain the same. I find myself still floundering to adjust to family life with adult children.

Just when I think I've got it, the current pulls us in a new direction.

As I get older, and hopefully wiser, I'm learning that you have to swim with the currents, even in a riptide. I spent a lot of wasted energy in the past, trying to swim against the current, especially when conflicts arose.

There have been many friends throughout

the different seasons of life that have come and gone. Very few have followed through all of life's ups and downs.

Family is different though. Families evolve together. It's a unique relationship in which we have known each other always and our lives are forever intertwined.

Like the ocean waves, there are highs and lows in every family. The tides come in and out and the currents pull us. So embrace what is, swim with the current, catch a wave and enjoy the ride.

On these final weeks of summer, I hope you have the opportunity to plant your toes in the sand and take in our magnificent beaches. And make memories with your family and loved ones that will last you a lifetime.

As always, this issue of Shore Local is bursting with events and local happenings, along with features about the people and places we love.

Be sure to check out the “Other Atlantic City" which is quite a contrast to our own Atlantic City that is a metropolitan hotspot of entertainment and excitement.

Hometown Hero: Brooke Sharpe

Selected Marine Corps Member of the Year

B

rooke Sharp was in Kindergarten when the events of 9-11 unfolded. She recalls getting out of school early that day, seeing the images of the buildings collapsing on television and observing how people came together to help one another. That is when she remembers first thinking “I’m going to help too.”

Fast forward to July 11th, 2018 in Washington DC. Marine. Brooke Sharp was awarded Marine Corps Times Service Member the Year for her outstanding service. Nationally, Brooke Sharp is the first female to ever receive this prestigious award.

Brooke grew up, just outside of Mays Landing in Dorothy and is a graduate of Buena Regional High School.

She enlisted in the Marines upon graduation. There she met her now husband, Alan Sharp. Together they live at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

During her deployment, Marine Sergeant Brooke Sharp was among the first Marines returning to the dan-

gerous Helmand province in Afghanistan. Sharp became vital in helping save lives and drop precision ordnance on the Taliban.

It was the first time the Marine Corps had returned to this area of Afghanistan since 2014. Much work was needed to rebuild the Afghan force and keep the capital city of Lashkar

The security situation had greatly deteriorated. Taliban fighters were very close to taking control of the Afghan capital.

Sharp established and linked remote outposts to help shine a light on Taliban activities. She also helped wounded Afghan troops be transported off the battlefield to receive medical care. Additionally, Sharp helped rebuild

a command and control node for U.S. forces and an Army artillery unit.

Sharp helped build command and control outposts that could push information, live video feeds and communications to help track and strike Taliban militants as well as keep an eye on Afghan forces. Her role encompassed constant communication, tracking every movement of the enemy.

Ultimately Afghan forces backed

by Marines retook a strategic district located just outside Lashkar Gah known as Nawa. American air support during that operation helped boost the morale of Afghan forces fighting the Taliban on the ground.

Sharp was a vital member of her Task Force. She contributed far beyond her job description and was vital in saving many lives.

Sharp was recently home to Atlantic County for a visit with her family.

Her parents Andy and Cheryl Hallowell couldn't be prouder of their daughter.

Cheryl said she recently found a journal Brooke had kept at the age of 11. In it, she had written “I am going to be a marine.”

ne day, I was using the maps app on my iPhone to find the best way into Atlantic City from where I was. I typed “Atlantic City” in the search bar, and got two listings. One Atlantic City was in New Jersey and the other was from Wyoming. Stunned by another list-

Atlantic City Wyoming learned my phone wasn’t lying.

Atlantic City Wyoming is located in Wyoming in a mountainous region called the South Pass. Unlike the Atlantic City most known for being along the Jersey Shore and featuring a beach and boardwalk, casinos, and other forms of live entertainment, Atlantic City, WY has a population of about 39 people, a church, and a store and restaurant called the Atlantic City Mercantile.

According to the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office’s website, Atlantic City, WY was constructed as a mining town

popular for people migrating west on the Oregon Trail People began to settle in the area once gold was verified to exist in the region 1867. South Pass City was the first city established in this hopefully prosperous region that same year. Atlantic City and it’s sister town, Miner’s Delight, were constructed the following year.

The area remained prosperous through 1869, and the Atlantic City area had a population of around 3,000. Gold mining remained steady after the giagantic boom in Atlantic City’s early years, and the area even had some smaller booms over the next few years. After the boom of 1867-1868, the mining industry depleted and Atlantic City almost became deserted.

The mining industry eventually couldn’t provide economic stability in

their businesses. One of these business was the Atlantic City Mercantile which was opened as a local store and is now on the U.S. Register of Historic Places.

The original store was closed in 1929, and was bought by steelworkers in 1964, who reopened the building as a restaurant.

The Atlantic City Mercantile is one of few notable buildings in the town, along with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

This Atlantic City looks like a great place to travel to for people who want to escape their usual trips to the beach and boardwalk. It looks like a great place to go hiking, and has a lot of history hidden around its small streets and aging buildings.

Hopefully when I have a personal travel fund, I may be able to travel to Atlantic City, WY and learn more about what life for western settlers was like during the gold rush. Afterward, I may even stop into the Mercantile for a bite to eat and a round of beer.

t's not often that I do this because I don't like to complain about things unless total outrage by everyone is warranted. This week I'm going to forego my regular weather article to shine a light on a situation that is about to unfold in less than 3 weeks - I'm talking about the suspension of the Atlantic City Rail Line.

There is absolutely no hiding the fact that NJT is outright lying to the public. I will not mince words or sugar coat the situation. I’ve pointed out for over a week now how their official statement is hogwash. A bunch of malarkey. I’ve got a unique perspective that the general public doesn’t due to my years of interest in the railroad.

The accepted narrative is that the line is being suspended to install a safety device to help alleviate crashes caused by human error - and part of that is true. There is a system called PTC, and it is being installed, however, a line does NOT need to be totally shut down for 5 months to make this happen. In fact, NJT just released an update to the system-wide installation just the other day telling us that over 50% of the system has had it completed.

Wait. How was this done without closing all those other lines down for 5 months? Hey, NJT, do me a favor? Please don’t assume that we are sheep that can easily be led astray. We weren’t born yesterday your contradictory

I, for one, would be appreciative if they just came clean and told us what the actual plan was instead of creating a falsehood to string people along and lead them down a path to acceptance. I’ve got over 2k signatures on my petition. My goal is 5k by the end of the week.

South Jersey’s Mini Golf Craze Rolls On

A

t the age of seven, my grandfather and I would walk to the Margate Miniature Golf Course.

It was a small but unique course played entirely on a flat surface. Just like baseball, mini golf is an American pastime, enjoyed by kids both young and old.

The origins of the game can be traced back to Scotland in 1867. A nine-hole putting course was opened along the links of St. Andrews Golf Club where women could play and practice their shots. The Ladies’ Putting Club of St. Andrews retains active membership to this day.

James Barber, of North Carolina, built his own miniature golf course in 1916. His design featured geometrically-shaped walkways, water fountains, and landscaping.

Although the game had prominent existence in years past, Garnet Carter is considered one the founding fathers of mini golf. The owner of several prominent golf courses, Carter was

the first person to patent the game in 1927, which he called “Tom Thumb Golf.” Many of these courses consisted mostly of several banks, curves and hills, with little to no obstacles. The mini golf craze would go on to sweep the country; within three years time, more than 25,000 courses were built across the country.

The advent of technology sprung a new revolution. Businessman Al Lomma added his own gimmicks to the game. Features such as rotating windmill blades, moving ramps and statues became a staple of the miniature golf course for decades to come.

Today’s mini golf courses combine new elements to a classic game. Obstacles like windmills, castles, and rocks remain a staple, and now new and exciting features such as bridges, steep hills, and water fountains are being added. Some courses

are even played in “glow-in-the-dark” illuminated light. Most courses end with the “hole in one,” allowing players the opportunity to earn a free game.

There are several organizations dedicated to miniature golf as a competitive sport. The Professional Putters Associa-

together every week to play a round of mini golf. It is the thrill of friendly competition and sportsmanship that keeps us coming back to play. And with cooler temperatures right around the corner, it makes for the perfect outdoor activity.

Margate’s newest mini golf attraction has recently opened to the public. Situated along Ventnor Avenue, Congo Falls features 18-holes of adventure including an interactive gorilla, a rope bridge, a 35-foot long boat, and palm trees lining the course.

n the 1890's, Atlantic City offered a flume ride much like the extreme thrill rides of today. "Shooting The Chutes" was a major attraction on the boardwalk. Riders were pulled up a long incline in an open car, then were transfered to a flat-bottomed boat. The boat raced down a track to a large pool, where it bounced and skimmed across the water.

popular ride in the late 1800's was the bicycle railway. This one in 1884 was located at Mississippi and Missouri Avenues.

There were several styles of these rides located throughout Atlantic City.

tlantic City businessmen bought an old whaling ship and purposely took it on the beach at Michigan Avenue. The "stranded" boat was on exhibition for a 10 cent admission. Atlantic City authorities forced it to move after a week. It was refloated and moved to the inlet where it did little business.

Summer Camps at the Jersey Shore

T

his may come as no surprise to those who know me or read my columns regularly, but I am a bit of a busybody.

Not in the sense that I like to gossip, but I like to share ideas and get ideas from others. That is why I am writing an article in August about summer camp options. I realize that summer will be winding down soon, but in talking to my mom friends lately, I’ve learned about some unique camps that their children have attended this summer. I’m a list maker so I’ve been making a list for next summer of camps. When the time comes to start planning, I will be able to remember

good ones that have been recommended to me. I highly recommend that you store this issue away for the spring when your summer planning begins.

I am a fan of weeklong camps. As a mom of twins, I like to keep them together so when planning activities, I need ones that satisfy both of them.

This summer my kids are doing a fantastic camp called Amazinators.

Amazinators is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) program created by several Linwood and Egg Harbor Township teachers. Kids enjoy a variety of hands-on activities to foster their creativity and ability to problem-solve.

This summer programs are being offered in Linwood and Margate for students in grades kindergarten through 9th. More information about Amazinators can be found at https:// www.amazinators.com.

Are your kids interested in theater? Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point offered an excellent summer program for ages ranging from young children to high school. While the younger grades learned the basics of musical theater including acting, singing and dance, the older program was designed for serious teens interested in pursuing the performing arts as a profession. The summer program concluded with performances of Disney Magic and Mayhem for the younger kids and Wizard of Oz for

the older participants. I have heard nothing but excellent things about the experiences kids had there this summer. More information can be found at http://www.gatewaybythebay.org.

While the Margate City Beach Patrol Junior Lifeguard Program is not new, it’s one that I’m keeping an eye on for next year because I think my kids would love it. The program is designed for children ages 6-13 and activities include simulated rescue activities, lifeguard boat instruction, obstacle courses, beach flag competition, rescue board instruction and swimming.

These activities are fun for kids while teaching them practical life-saving skills.

Other camps that have gotten great reviews from friends are film camp offered through Little Rock Films and Studios in Ventnor, performing arts camp offered through Beyou-Ti-Ful ARTS in Ocean

View and art camp offered through The Barn in Seaville. No matter what your children’s interest, you can find a variety of summer activities to satisfy everyone. Make sure to cut out this article (or better yet save the whole issue) for next summer when you start planning out summer camps for your kids!

Ocean City Events and Happenings It’s a Pageant Week in Ocean City ... for Humans and Hermit Crabs Miss Crustacean, Little Miss Ocean City, Junior Miss Ocean City - All to be Crowned Congratulations to our new Miss Ocean City, 19-year-old Megan Keenan, who was crowned Saturday on the Ocean City Music Pier. Another week of pageantry in Ocean City includes the Miss Crustacean Beauty Pageant on Wednesday, the Little Miss Ocean City Pageant on Friday and the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant on Saturday.

The original beauty contest for crustaceans returns as an evening event this year. In an annual tradition, Ocean City celebrates the beauty of hermit crabs with contestants vying for the coveted Cucumber Rind Cup. All families, kids, businesses and organizations are invited to enter their crustacean in the competition on Wednesday, August 15.

The pageant begins at 6 p.m. on the beach at Sixth Street with registration for competitors opening at 5:30 p.m. The pageant promotes responsible ownership of hermit crabs and features them displayed in elaborately themed dioramas. The winner gets to travel a flowery runway to take her reign.

“Ocean City is the only place in the world where you’ll see a crustacean beauty pageant,” event founder Mark Soifer said with his usual sense of understatement.

The pageant is followed immediately by the annual Hermit Crab Races with the speediest crustaceans competing for the King of

Klutz Plaque. Both events are free to watch or join. For more information, call 609-399-6111.

The Little Miss Ocean City Pageant starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at the Ocean City Music Pier. The pageant will include more 18 girls ages 8 to 11 competing in talent and other categories. This year’s pageant includes a Hawaiian theme. Reigning Little Miss Ginger Mumman will crown her successor at the conclusion of the pageant. OC High School Working with Elephants in Thailand

his summer, Danielle Conte, 16, of Ocean City, New Jersey, spent two weeks in Thailand helping animals and learning hands-on what it’s like to be a veterinarian. Traveling with studyabroad organization Loop Abroad, Danielle was selected as part of a small team that volunteered giving care at a dog shelter and spent a week working directly with rescued elephants at an elephant sanctuary.

The Veterinary Service program brings students to Thailand for two weeks to volunteer alongside veterinarians from the US and Thailand.

For one week, Danielle and her team volunteered at an elephant sanctuary outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand to work with the giant animals and learn

about animal rescue and conservation on a larger scale.

The elephants at the sanctuary have been rescued from trekking, logging, or forced breeding programs.

Many of them had been abused and suffer from chronic injuries or blindness. At the elephant sanctuary, they are cared for by volunteers from all over the world. Danielle helped to feed and care for elephants, as well as learn about their diagnoses alongside an elephant vet. The sanctuary is also home to over 1,000 animals, including cats, dogs, water buffalo, horses, and cows, and is sustained in huge part by the work of weekly volunteers like Danielle.

While she studied under the veterinarians leading her group, Danielle and her team made a difference in the lives of these dogs. By providing check-ups and cleanings, diagnosing and treating ear and eye problems, taking and testing blood, administering vaccines, cleaning and treating wounds, and helping with sterilization surgeries, the students were able to help support the health and well-being of these dogs.

By following a study abroad model instead of a voluntourism model, Loop focuses on educating its students so that they can contribute and serve in meaningful ways. It also works with

locally run animal welfare organizations so that students contribute to long-term improvement on the ground in the countries they visit.

With programs in Thailand, South Africa, Australia, and the Amazon and Galapagos, Loop Abroad is able to support animal welfare and conservation around the world because of its students and their dedication to helping animals in need.

The program’s Managing Director Jane Stine says, “Our students are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. They are kind, compassionate, dedicated, hard-working individuals who have big goals and want to make a big impact. It’s amazing to see how eager they are to learn and challenge themselves. Over the last nine years, we’ve seen them go on to do some wonderful things.”

Loop Abroad has animal science, marine biology, and veterinary programs for students and young adults age 14 to 30, and offers financial aid and fundraising help. Programs range from two weeks in summer to a full semester abroad, and college credit is available. Interested participants can inquire or apply at www.LoopAbroad.com. A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

T

his past weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend the 50th reunion of Atlantic City’s High School’s class of 1968.

The building we graduated from is no longer there but thankfully many of us still are. One cannot attend such a milestone event without reflecting on the affair and the impact on oneself. The weekend started off Friday evening at Harry’s Oyster Bar in Atlantic City. My wife and I walked in trying to find where my class was assembling. Our search took us to their outside lounge area. I surveyed the crowd and was about to overlook a bunch of silver hair hanging around the bar, when I recognized that these people were my classmates.

We were given name tags with our high school photo to attach to our clothing.

It was humorous to watch everyone squinting, putting on reading glasses, or

taking off glasses to make out the name tags of classmates who were not easily recognizable. Let’s face it. Without getting into morbid details, we have gone through some ch ch ch changes. It struck me funny when someone would walk up to me, peer closely to my name tag and then walk away without a word. To be perfectly honest, I was not very social in high school. I did not belong to any fraternities, clubs, or participate in organized athletics.

There was a tight group of four or five of us who hung around together and a handful of others with whom we were friendly.

I wrote in a previous column about getting out of my comfort zone so I decided to put myself out there and introduce myself to as many classmates as possible. For the most part, I was greeted warmly and was surprised at how many were familiar with my writings and photography due to social media. On the other hand, I saw how some the high school cliques were still impenetrable. Saturday night the venue was the Atlantic City Country Club, where we all had cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the terrace with a beautiful view overlooking the bay and Absecon Island in the distance. People who were not able to make the previous night

We tried as best we could to sum up the last fifty years in just a few precious moments. I did exchange some phone numbers and received invitations to visit these old friends across the country. Even though the time spent at Atlantic City High School was only four

years, I grew up with a good number of these classmates all through elementary, middle and junior high schools. We shared history. The only thing that would have made it better would have been their biographies to learn about the lives they have led over the past fifty years. I am sure there would have been some stories to be told. I know I would have had mine.

We were the generation of the sixties. We were not going to get old or trust anyone over thirty. We were going to change the world; make a difference. Fifty years later, it appears that time has changed us just as it has done the generations before us. We are older, many heavier and for the men, a bit less hair. But the voices still rang familiar and the friendships have endured over the years. I hope a 60th reunion will be in our future but the name tags are going to have to be much larger.

ow that you’ve had the chance to relax and regroup after retirement or a layoff, it is time to think about the second half of your life. A little extra income would be great on your own terms. There is a booming need for self-disciplined workers to fill thousands of jobs that are on-line. This simply means you work from home, set your own hours and utilize those skills you have used you’re your career. There are four main pre-requisites needed for this vast and growing industry: Baby boomers have strong customer service skills, leadership skills, strong attendance (meaning if you have to be at your desk next to your bed at 9am, you will be ready at 8:45am at your desk, just feet away from where you slept the night before), all those

skills you mastered such as problem solving, keeping detailed records and lastly, computer skills.

Stats show that baby boomers are more likely to want to go to a location for that part-time or full-time income, but the truth is more and more baby boomers as they are trained in technology, they feel more comfortable in being a part of the 21st century workforce in the same way baby boomers have moved from land line phones to cell phones. The transition is the same. The good news is you won’t have to figure it out all by yourself, you won’t get scammed before you make that extra income and you will

be confident in taking on this new challenge. The T.Byrd Training Center is offering several services dedicated to baby boomers who are interested in re-inventing themselves after retirement, downsizing or layoffs.

There are so many opportunities and the demand for baby boomers is present, but of course these companies are advertising online and there is a reason for that. These companies want baby boomers who are connected and have the computer skills to match their career experience. The good news it is very easy to get those computer skills, learn in a comfortable environment where the end goal

is to take you to the next level. Now our prospective is not to become an online employee, it is to start your own service, providing a product in demand by a population that is in demand – Baby Boomers. Utilize all of those great career skills you have obtained over the years and control your next destiny by setting your own hours, deciding on what contracts you will take, set your own hourly rate and most important provide a service that is in demand. Being Open To Change

hose who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

I’m sure most of us have heard that reminder before. It’s attributed to Spanish philosopher and poet George Santayana. Last week I wrote that in business, the need to adapt or change when the needs of our customers or clients change is paramount to long term success. I wrote that when we fail to change or adapt, eventually we die. And I also pointed out that the same principle applies to our personal lives.

So, here is where the remembering the past comes in. I want to remind you of a few names: Woolworth, Circuit City, Tower Records.

How about Kodak or Blockbuster?

These were once brand names, big names that one way or another

got swallowed up in the corporate change they either ignored or refused to accept.

My point is that when you fail to evaluate where you are professionally and personally you stand a very good chance of becoming stagnant.

When you stop growing, when you stop learning, becoming a better you today than you were yesterday, something inside of you begins to die. When it comes to your profession or a business, if you fail to innovate or pay attention to where the market is going; if you fail to connect with what your customer wants and needs, it’s the beginning of the end. I know that sounds harsh but history reminds us of this all the time. It’s that simple. Here’s the reality. The major brand names and companies that I mentioned should have known better. But they didn’t. We need to learn from them. You say, “but I’m content.”

Let me remind you of something.

Often contentment breeds complacency and complacency leads to regression. Consider just one of the companies I mentioned.

Blockbuster was approached by a little known startup named Netflix.

Netflix offered to merge their two companies. Blockbuster turned down the offer because at the time, they were doing great. They failed to look into the future.

My challenge to you this week is to look at your current situation; personally and professionally. Ask yourself, is there room for growth?

Is there a need to change things up a bit? Look around you and ask the tough questions. How about this one? How can I make sure I’m doing what I need to do today to ensure that tomorrow will be better?

This weeks takeaway - You will never passively find what you do not purposefully pursue.

ust this week, I have seen three clients with depression requiring treatment. Naturally, I do believe treatment options, as I teach, include self care. Self-care includes things like sleep, physical activity, and diet, and can be just as important as meds and therapy — sometimes more so. Diet is such an important component of mental health that it has inspired an entire field of medicine called nutritional psychiatry. What it boils down to is that what we eat matters for every aspect of our health, but especially our mental health.

Major depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses.

Now, everyone feels sad occasionally.

A full range of emotions is part of what makes us human. Depression, however, is not just sadness. It is characterized by weeks of such symptoms as low or sad mood, diminished interest in activities that used to be pleasurable, weight gain or loss, fatigue, inappropriate guilt, difficulty concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of death.

Growing evidence indicates that positive psychological well-being seems to be associated with reduced risk of physical illness, and prospective studies that follow individuals over time have found that people starting out happier may indeed end up healthier and less likely to get sick. So mental health does appear to play a part in physical health, which is why it’s crucial that the food you eat support both your mind and your body. Common foods from leafy green vegetables, to your basic garden-variety tomato, may positively affect your brain chemistry and help ward off depression. In fact, even simply smelling the common spice saffron may improve your emotional state.

Many plant foods, including apples, berries, grapes, onions, and green tea, contain phytonutrients that appear to naturally inhibit MAO, as do such spices as cloves, oregano, cinnamon, and nutmeg. This may help explain why those eating plant-rich diets have lower rates of depression. Even on a day-to-

day basis, studies have shown that the more fruits and vegetables you eat, the happier, calmer, and more energetic you may feel that day—and this positivity can spill over into the next day. I am a firm believer that a dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grain, fish, olive oil, low-fat dairy, and antioxidants, and low intakes of animal foods, is associated with a decreased risk of depression. A dietary pattern characterized by a high consumption of red and/or processed meat, refined grains, sweets, high-fat dairy products, butter, potatoes, and high-fat gravy, and low intakes of fruits and vegetables is associated with an increased risk of depression.

Avoiding the blues is not just about eating your greens, though. There are also components in certain foods that may increase the risk of depression, such as arachidonic acid, that is blamed for potentially impairing mood by inflaming the brain. The topfive sources of this inflammation-promoting compound in the American diet are chicken, eggs, beef, pork, and fish, although chicken and eggs alone contribute more than the other top sources combined. There are data suggesting that people with higher levels of arachidonic acid in their blood may end up at significantly higher risk of suicide and episodes of major depression.

The gist of it is, eat plants, and lots of them, including fruits and veggies, whole grains (in unprocessed form, ideally), seeds and nuts, with some lean proteins like fish and yogurt. Avoid things made with added sugars or flours (like breads, baked goods, cereals, and pastas), and minimize animal fats, processed meats (sorry, bacon), and butter. Occasional intake of these “bad” foods is probably fine; remember, everything in moderation. And, for those who are trying to lose weight, you can’t go wrong with colorful fruits and veggies. No one got fat eating berries or broccoli. Quality matters over quantity.

Bare Knuckle Cafe

f someone offers you a knuckle sandwich and that person is Ray or Elizabeth Klein, your answer should be YES! They are not being fresh, that is the specialty of their food truck named Bare Knuckle Café. If you have attended a local festival or farmers market in the past two years, you may have seen their green truck. They are growing in popularity every day and with good reason. Their food is prepared thoughtfully and along with their daughter Emma, they are one of the kindest families in South Jersey.

Ever since I saw the movie Chef starring John Favreau in which he buys a food truck, I have thought how fun that would be. While it may seem like an exciting adventure, make no mistake. Having

a food truck business is hard work!

Ask Elizabeth about their journey to owning Bare Knuckle Café and you will have an enormous amount of respect for what the Kleins have created.

Elizabeth spent 27 years working her way up in a local company called AK Pharma,. There she learned the ins and outs of marketing. When the company ended operations, she took a job as a secretary in the nurse’s office of Egg Harbor Township High School.

Ray has a culinary degree and worked for 15 years as a casino chef before leaving when he felt that he was missing out on important moments with his family. He’s been working during the day for a coffee company, which has given him the flexibility to spend

more time with his family. The couple taught cooking classes at the EHT Recreation Center for 11 years.

When a friend called Elizabeth several years ago to tell her about a food truck for sale, her and Ray decided to go take a look. They took a leap of faith and invested a big part of their savings in a truck that needed a LOT of work. What they were never prepared for was the outpouring of generosity and support from their friends and strangers who offered to help them fix up the truck from top to bottom.

After 16 months, the truck was ready for their first catering job, a graduation party.

Fast forward to today and Bare Knuckle Café is in demand!

They offer catering services in addition to attending festivals, farmers markets and doing pop-up events. The menu only has one permanent item, the Sweet Memphis which is slow roasted pork, sweet bbq sauce , green apple slaw and cheddar cheese, wrapped in a tortilla and grilled. Everything else on their menu changes for each event. Bare Knuckle Café was a vendor at the Linwood Farmers Market in the fall and everything that I tried from them was fantastic. Devoted knucklehead fans will line up to get their fill and it’s always worth the wait!

The Kleins are unbelievably generous. Born and raised in EHT, they strongly believe in giving back to their community. At EHT National Night Out earlier this month, they donated a portion of their proceeds to the EHT Graduation Project. Last year they participated in Linwood PTO’s Empty Bowls event which raised money for local food pantries.

If you aren’t following Bare Knuckle Cafe on social media, you should be!

They do an amazing job of letting fans know where to find them and it changes every week. They also post their menu items so you can know exactly what to order when it’s your turn in line. They support other local businesses which I find admirable. The Kleins work very hard at events to deliver the highest quality food to their customers, but still manage to have a big smile on their faces. They are grateful for the support of the community and we are lucky to have them serving up such delicious food. I wish them many more years of success with Bare Knuckle Café! Guests felt right at home on the 31st Annual JFS House Tour

argate, NJ – August 13, 2018 –The JFS House Tour, held on August 6, 2018, gave approximately 500 guests a rare opportunity to see inside seven breathtaking and uniquely structured Downbeach homes while supporting a great cause. The event raised $45,000 to benefit Village by the Shore, which provides a variety of concierge, volunteer and professional services and socialization for adults fifty and older in our community.

Organized by co-chairs Fran Gelman, Pam Sinderbrand and Mitch Tannehill, the 31st Annual JFS House Tour committee selected homes with style, taste, and loads of personality.

Houses on the 2018 tour included everything from a remodeled and ADA-modified beach block cape cod to a luxurious 4,200 square-foot custom built home constructed with an energy efficient building envelope making it a model for new shore homes to come. Other featured homes included a contemporary beach house with custom interior elements, fresh pops of color and a top floor lounge and wet bar with gorgeous Ventnor beach views. Another was an updated 1922 Tudor-style seven bedroom home displaying original details like stained glass panels, Tudor arches and a painted beamed ceiling in the dining room. aking time off from a business you own and operate can be one of the hardest things to do. Most people will tell you a vacation is needed and necessary at regular intervals. That is something the majority of business people will actually agree with in theory. However putting that plan for time off or getting away from your work and business can be difficult in the real world.

For the last several years running my own business, I made a conscious decision to keep the same vacation schedule my family and I had become accustomed to each year during the summer season at the Jersey Shore.

We continued a tradition that we started nearly twenty years ago by leaving the hustle and the bustle of the

packed island crowds and increased traffic behind, for a less crowded lower stress lake vacation.

I am well aware that many of my fellow business owners rely on the increased visits from our out of state and instate distant neighbors to help make their businesses more profitable. I do understand that concept and the reasons behind it, but I also watch the churn and burn take the physical and mental toll on my friends as they work even harder to keep up with the increased demand on their time and energy.

So what do you do? I would strongly recommend a well-timed and well planned in season vacation. That’s right, I said it. Take a look at the very middle of your season riddled with business and consider a well-deserved

number of days off. It could be just a few days strung together or a full week. Sometimes you need to get away to be able to get things going.

I can speak from experience that every day I come up with a new idea, concept, or strategy for my own business or for another business.

Whether it is a basic thought or a full blown plan, the reality that I can take the time to expand on those ideas are limited by how busy I am and how much work I have at the time.

History will show, that during the past 20 years of vacation, my ability to think, rethink, and modify ideas and concepts that I undertake upon my return to the world of work, has produced some of my most creative, unique, and surprisingly successful results.

Maybe it is the comfort of a return to a simpler way of vacationing. Perhaps it is the connection to a more natural and less tourism driven environment. Or just maybe it has something to do with the fact that there is much less competition for my attention in a freeing, calming, cooler, rustic way of living that allows my thoughts time to be nurtured and grow.

Another benefit to getting away is the ability to let things go. When you consider what is on your mind and have the time to think it through thoroughly the opportunity exists to find an answer and leave what was troubling you behind.

I hope as you read this, you stop for a moment and ask yourself about the reality of your ability to get away to get things going. I have never regretted one minute or forgotten the true creative benefits of taking the time away and coming back rested and ready to work towards success.

olsbury Hill is one of my alltime favorite songs. Creator of the song, Peter Gabriel, has said "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get …… It's about letting go." For many of us, it is a musically infused journey of taking the time to think, reflect, and ultimately act, with the goal of moving towards something better. There have been countless attempts to decipher the song and elements within it. As with any song interpretation, people

will take away from the song what they identify with and what moves them. Solsbury Hill is about movement. From the climbing of the hill to the decision to leave what is troubling us behind. We all have hills to climb and decisions

to make. Perhaps it is time for you to get away and let go to get things going!

"Solsbury Hill" was the first debut single released by Peter Gabriel after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis. The single was a Top 20 hit in the UK and reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977. It went on to be used in many films and film trailers. Solsbury Hill is a real place actually called Little Solsbury Hill located in Somerset, England.

The Rebirth of the Hispanic Alliance

he Hispanic Alliance is alive and well. For 15 years, seeing its heyday in the 1990’s, The Hispanic Alliance of Atlantic County was known for celebrating latino culture in our area through festivals, summits, pageants, and more. In addition to the celebratory events hosted by the alliance, the members also worked diligently to create scholarship opportunities for the Latino youth in the area, as well as offered career and leadership development. Committees of the alliance worked specifically on advocacy in the areas of discrimination and immigration for the local Latino community.

Unfortunately when the casinos plummeted and businesses began to decline in the early 2000’s, the funding and support needed to keep

the organization afloat went with it. Things began to fall apart for the Hispanic Alliance but after ten years of flying under the radar, the alliance has emerged again.

Bert Lopez, an original founding member of the alliance, with the help of former members are rebirthing the Hispanic Alliance with plans to be better and more impactful than ever before. Members both new and old are coming together to bring the

alliance back to life. So far, the group has had two meetings where about fifty participants have gathered to discuss the governance structure and sub committees. The two main areas of focus for the alliance are Youth & Education, as well as Advocacy and Social Services. Committees for these areas are being formed currently with the future committee focusing on cultural festivities to come soon.

Ediana Aponte Martinez, a member of the Hispanic Alliance as a high school student, is volunteering her time now as an adult and parent of three children of her own. She is passionate about helping the youth become career and goal oriented as well as offer support in issues such as bullying, depression, and suicide that plague our youth.

Pedro Santana, a Stockton University adjunct professor and Assistant VP for Student Affairs, is the president of Unidos. Unidos is the faculty and staff organization dedicated to raising awareness to the contributions of Latino culture, history, and customs. Santana was excited to join the rebirth of the Hispanic Alliance, as he moved to the local area just as the original group was declining in the early 2000s. To Pedro Santana, being a part of the Hispanic Alliance offers a beautiful opportunity to advance the goal of uplifting the Latino community by way of advocacy and education, as well as cultivating the next crop of future leaders.

Members of the alliance include new students, local residents, business leaders, and professionals as well as those impacted by the alliance of the 90s.

“HAAC has played an instrumental part in my life since I was first introduced to the organization as a high school student 15 years ago. As a young and developing Latina woman

struggling to find my identity in a predominantly white school, it was extremely important to have mentors that looked like me and understood my culture when guiding me through the rough high school years and college application process. Even when HAAC lost its momentum and membership, Bert Lopez continued to open doors for me both personally and professionally in various capacities. Through Bert’s guidance and the unequivocal support of my fellow HAAC brothers and sisters, the values of persistence, resilience, mentorship, and family have forever been instilled in me, and is what I have tried to instill in my mentees in the Latino community and at the university level. With the rebirth of HAAC, it is my mission to begin working on reviving the HAAC youth programs that teach our kids that access to college is not a myth or a dream, but an attainable feat. I hope the news about HAAC’s rebirth spreads to the community and sparks interest amongst those capable of collaborating for the betterment of our Latino people.” - Jessica Grullon, Assistant Director of Graduate Studies at Stockton University.

We painstakingly tasted the nine finalists’ recipes, and scored for flavor and presentation. Contestants were scored for sanitation during the preparation process

n Thursday, August 2, 2018 I was privileged to participate as a judge in the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC) “Cook Your Way to 18k” contest. The contest was open to anyone was currently in high school or had graduated. It was designed to entice budding culinary enthusiasts to win a scholarship to attend the Academy of Culinary Arts for Baking and Pastry or Culinary Certification, all while earning credits toward their associate degree from The Rose French Toast was the winning pastry and Atlantic Cape Community baking recipe by Ahmad Reed of Marmora.

The judges pictured are Donna Albano, Stockton University, Chef Willie Lewis, consulting chef of Kelsey’s in Atlantic City and Jerry Beaver, Director of Food and Beverage for Caesars and Bally’s Atlantic City. as well. We tasted sweet and savory dishes including macaroni and cheese, Mississippi Mud Pie, Green Tea Matcha Sponge Cake, Duck Breast, and more. The winners were Maria Cotton of Williamstown, who prepared Thai-style Green Curry with Chicken and

Shrimp, and for baking and pastry, Ahmad Reed of Marmora presented a beautiful Rose French Toast.

Needless to say, it’s incredibly rewarding to help student’s in pursuit of their dream by supporting these types of scholarship endeavors.

In my over 20 years in higher education I have always been involved in scholarship work. both internally at Atlantic Cape Community College and Stockton University, as well as externally in our community, sitting on scholarship committees for the Greater Atlantic City Concierge Association and the Howard Bacharach Scholarship Foundation. Both entities work year-round raising funds, hosting events and combing through scholarship applications to award deserving students financial support to pursue their educational endeavors. In a community dependent on the hospitality & tourism industry, providing support is just one way we can attract and retain talent in to our local industry.

This year’s Howard Bacharach Scholarship Foundation will hold its final golf tournament on Friday, October 5th at the Linwood Country Club. The Howard Bacharach Scholarship Foundation (HBSF) was created by Ronnie Bacharach, adoring wife of the late Howard Bacharach, the executive director of the Atlantic City Hotel & Lodging Association where, among many initiatives, he wholeheartedly supported the association’s Education/Scholarship Program. In an

effort to keep this initiative alive, the Howard Bacharach Scholarship Foundation was formed. This will be our last year formally fundraising for this foundation. We are moving it to an endowed scholarship at Stockton University to keep Howard’s name alive in perpetuity.

The Greater Atlantic City Concierge Association Scholarship Committee has already begun preparations for the February 2019 Wine Tasting Art Show fundraiser. We have awarded over $73,000 since 2009.

The Hurley Line: Voters say they want "Pollyanna" - Instead, they get "Freddy Krueger" Campaigns

he state of our electoral politics is broken. Elections used to be about real issues and real people. Now, it's all about trying to convince the voters that the various candidates are monsters. They want you to be afraid. Be very afraid!

Think about for a moment. When is the last time that you can remember any campaign (at any level) being about the important issues that affect our lives? How about never!

Instead of debating tax policy, government services, social matters, and other important quality of life issues, we are bombarded with campaigns replete with: Did you know that Candidate X smells like a garbage can? And, that Candidate Y is the worst human being on planet Earth?

I promise you this: between now and Tuesday, November 6, 2018, we will be inundated with outlandish and fantastical allegations. Each one will be worse than the other. And, whatever you do, don't believe the polls on the topic of negative campaigning.

Each and every time, these polls end with a significant majority of respondents agreeing that they don't like negative campaigns. Why do the campaigns continue to wage them? Because they work!

It's one of those mystifying facts of life.

They give you exactly what you say you don't want, in hopes of them getting the exact result that they want. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

The disturbing part about this is that it usually delivers victory and then it further encourages the hyper-negative process to continue; only next time it escalates to new low levels. The voters become desensitized. In order to shock them the next time, the tactics have to go lower and meaner, because what used to shock people, no longer will.

It goes something like this: Did you know that Seth Grossman is against diversity?

For the record, that's not true. It's political fantasy to try and make Grossman appear

out-of-bounds, Van Drew is being accused of supporting Sanctuary Cities; something that he has never done.

I have a suggestion. Why don't we adopt the following Hurley Doctrine in our society: if a person running for office was always accepted in their community as being a good, fine, upstanding citizen, let's not allow their lives to be re-written in a few short months simply because they've had the courage to seek public elective office.

When the special interests and outside money loses, they'll send their political ghouls and goblins elsewhere. Ultimately, if America rejects this kind of campaign of seek and destroy tactics, it will end.

Sadly, Pollyanna won't be revisiting us anytime soon, if ever. This is my homage to the 1913 best-selling novel by Eleanor H. Porter. It's a children's classic, with the title character becoming an accepted popular term for those with a very optimistic outlook. In other words, it was The Pollyanna Principle. This was so popular in its time, that 12 more sequels followed by various authors. Still more sequels followed what has become known as the "Glad Books," as recently as 1997. Mary Pickford and Hayley Mills successfully took Pollyanna to the big screen in 1920 and 1960.

That was then and this is now. As popular as Pollyanna was in our past, the tragic reality today is that destruction politics works. I wish it didn't.

When elections are over, we must all still "live" together. It would be nice if the various candidates and campaigns realized this guiding principle. One of the most destructive additions to our electoral system was when out-of-town consultants and other outside interests became involved in our election campaigns.

to be an intolerant neanderthal. That was just the first cut. It didn't really stick, so the next round of attacks has to escalate to even worse characteristic traits and insults.

During this campaign, Grossman has been portrayed by the national media to be the bigot, anti-Muslim, racist, and Nazi candidate. Grossman is not guilty as charged.

He's an Officer of the Court, who has been elected in the past as an Atlantic City Councilman and Atlantic County Freeholder.

The electoral attack politics happens at all levels. United States Supreme Court Associate Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been viciously attacked. Things are about to get even worse for him, with his United States Senate confirmation hearings set to begin on September 4, 2018. The national media and other partisans have even resorted to attacking his wife.

Attacking spouses and other family members used to be way out of bounds.

Not any longer. The only rules in place these days are that there are no rules. Anything goes. It's like a fake reality television program. Only this is real and these are real lives that are directly affected by the vicious attack process.

The other inequity about this filthy disintegration of our electoral politics is that most often, Republicans get the worst of this treatment. However, State Senator Jeff Van Drew, D-1 will get his unfair share of this same garbage between now and General Election Day. Van Drew has already been attacked for: Being a Democrat. Not being a Democrat. He supports the 2nd Amendment.

He doesn't support the 2nd Amendment.

Van Drew is accused of supporting a $15 minimum wage. False charges that he supports illegal foreigners being counted in the next year's census. And, since no stretch is

scorching the earth and ruining lives, because they have no connection to our area.

They simply spin their hatred and lies; cash their weekly paychecks, and then blow like the wind right of town. They don't have to live with any of the carnage that they have created.

When polled, the voters say that they want our electoral system to resemble Pollyanna. But, in the end, what they really want is Freddy Krueger (cue the horror music, please). They say that they want nice; but, instead they fall prey to the dark side every time.

I still believe that there is a rock bottom to all of the political slime that is slung during each and every campaign. At some point, we will actually hit that bottom. Only then can we begin the process of fixing our broken electoral system.

Until then, fewer good people will be willing to put their names on the election ballot. I can't blame them. Who wants to subject themselves and their families to this kind of ordeal?

The Sky's the Limit

hen you are laying on the beach and you see a plane above with a banner, do you ever wonder where it comes from?

The planes fly out of the Woodbine Airport. I visited High Exposure and well, the the sky's the limit.

There are 12-18 professional pilots who pull the banners which are 30 to 100 feet long. How do those banners attach to the plane? There are four expressions: hot hook, you got it, here it comes and throttle up. The planes fly 500 feet in the air, then they cut the power, dive down to the ground and then level out or add more power to pick up the banner.

This is an amazing and precise maneuver using only one hook to catch the banner. The banners are made of ripstop nylon which is lightweight so it is easily towed behind the plane.

The plane itself is actually made of fabric (canvas) which is then painted over. The critical parts of the plane,

however, are aluminum and the windows are plexiglas.

Lance, Bret, David, Jim and Rich are a supportive team with safety being their top priority. No planes ever go out if the weather is unstable. The pilots, administrative staff and all the ground crew work together as a team to bring you words in the sky.

I am the self-proclaiming queen of the side hustle. As a college senior, I have worked eight internships, four jobs, and have multiple paying projects on the side. I’ve freelanced, did some housesitting, cleaned rental homes, tutored, and more.

So how do you find a side hustle? How do you get started? Let me share with you all of my side-hustle, boss babe wisdom: 1. Know Yourself What do you love to do, but don’t really have time for? What are your passions? My supervisor Ashley, serves as an excellent

example of living out the side hustle. She traditionally works as the associate director for my college’s department of alumni relations.

Ashley has always loved photography, and as a new mom, she has found her niche in candid, motherhood photography. She says that she makes up to $150 every weekend by doing photoshoots of mothers and newborns.

Ashley also blogs on the side, and she dreams of developing her blog and photography business to the point where she can work on it full-time.

Like Ashley, do some introspection and figure out what you love. Do you love pets?

Start a pet-sitting business. Are you a talented writer? Try freelancing. Are you a seasoned professional looking to help the community?

Serve on a board of directors for a local nonprofit, or apply to be an adjunct professor at your community college. When you know yourself, the opportunities are endless.

2. Know Your Community Starting something new can be challenging, and that’s why you need to leverage your friends and family. This summer, I rented a room in my college town to intern in Harrisburg, PA. I joined the neighborhood hiking club and connected with some of my neighbors.

After learning that they were going away on month-long vacations, I offered to do some house sitting. Now, I have built a good reputation in the community watering plants and

caring for pets of five different families. It’s easy, and this side hustle helps me save for my Disney World trip next year.

Networking is critical in any professional field, but fundamental when starting your side hustle. Ask your Facebook Friends to share the link to your blog. Hang some flyers on your church bulletin board with all the information

on your up-and-coming tutoring business. Get your personal training certification and talk to your local gym about collaborating. Advertising is the first step to side-hustle success.

3. Know Your Worth Side hustles remind us that we are so much more than riding a desk five days per week. They prove that we are uniquely nuanced and aren’t slaves to the corporate conglomerate. With this in mind, make sure that you are paid fairly and that you are practicing self-care. Take care of yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of starting something new, but allow yourself to separate from work

and spend time with loved ones too. Choose something that makes you feel valued for work and at home. Work can be rewarding, but take care of the real prize: You. Shore Local Talent: Christopher Galluccio

“Y

ou are Mona Lisa,” says Chris Galluccio as he explains his take on photography. “There’s the person you are. And then there is the person you want to be, know you can be, the highest version of yourself. That is the person I am interested in photographing.”

Chris, a 44 year old father who served three deployments in the United States Air Force, returned home to pursue his passion or his “higher calling” as a photographer.

Not just any photographer though. Chris’s unique approach to photography captures the inside more than the outside of the person on the other side of the lens.

An average photo shoot with Chris takes approximately two hours, half of which is spent getting to know the fears, the inspiration, the passion of the client. Chris is looking for honesty and for people to tell him what really matters in their lives. He wants to know about faith, relationships,

career, health, and personal goals. Through a series of questions and open dialogue, Chris dives into the lives of the person that he is working with and works to capture a deeper or a higher version of who they even think they can be. He wants to dig past the exterior layer and capture what lies within.

Once he gets an idea of what’s uniquely special about his client, he gets to work on capturing that person on camera. As he photographs, he uses prompts from the conversation to draw out raw emotion. He asks questions or points out things that were mentioned, and will often say things like, “I am going to ask you a question. Don’t respond, just think about it.” The pure emotion and authenticity that is revealed in facial expressions and emotion from these prompts is what makes Chris’s work so unique.

When the shoot is over and Chris gets to work on editing, he produces a piece of art that the client can hang up as a reminder of who they are, what they want, and an invitation to walk towards that person every day.

“You don’t need another motivational quote. You have it already inside of you.

Just imagine who you are already and let me give you proof of that. You’re already a masterpiece.” says Chris as he explains his connection and reference to Mona Lisa.

Mona Lisa is arguably the most famous painting in the world. She hangs on walls and in museums across the world in different forms, and yet many don’t ever question who she was. While there is some debate to her origin, the fact of the matter is that she wasn’t royalty, of religious hierarchy, or someone with a name for herself. In fact, she wasn’t someone that would have normally been glorified in the form of a painting during her time. She was the wife of a wealthy businessman who just so happened to live on the same street as Leonardo Da Vinci during his stay in Florence, and her face became the most famous painting in the world.

Who Mona Lisa was in real life may be

up for some debate but who she became as a world renowned painting is undeniable.

Chris finds inspiration in this, bringing to life the possibility of who we can become through art. In addition to the photography, Chris is in the process of producing a book entitled, “You Are Mona Lisa”, revealing the masterpiece inside of every single one of us.

Chris’s unique approach to capturing life through art is what makes him this edition of Shore Local Talent. Chris is also using his post Air Force business experience to give back to the military through training and coursework on business development.

The Layers of Local History Following the Seagull

or folks spending the summer in Ocean City, or on Absecon Island, a one day-trip worth taking is driving down

the barrier islands, which one can do by following the Seagull signs south on West Avenue. Before leaving Ocean City, it is worth stopping and taking a walk through the dune trails at Corson’s Inlet State Park, which is thick with wildlife, including all sorts of

shore birds, skittering land crabs, and foxes. Across the bridge is the hamlet of Strathmere, known as the town of Corson’s Inlet in 1905 when it was annexed by Upper Township, and considered by some to be a semi-secret spot to be kept on the down low. The

name was changed and Strathmere was settled in the 1910s, with the McCulloughs of Philadelphia the first to establish a general store, which also soon became home to the community’s first post office.

In the nineteenth century the land that later became Strathmere was owned by the same man who developed Sea Isle City, as well as Vineland, and has a unique history among Jersey Shore towns. Founded by Charles K. Landis in 1882, after being exonerated in a local celebrity murder trial in 1876, Sea Isle was originally meant to mimic Venice, Italy in being a seaside city

primarily composed of canals. The Colonnade Inn, the oldest building in town and endpoint of “Charles Landis’ Venetian Dream Tour,” was completed the next year. In 1885 the Ludlum’s Beach Lighthouse was built, and named after the seventeenth century farmer who had raised cattle and sheep on the barrier island centuries earlier. Landis’ canal plan never came to fruition, and the lighthouse was lost to the wrecking ball in 2010, but two of the bars that the town is best-known for today also date to the 1880s. The Ocean Drive was built in 1885 as the Philadelphia House, and owned for years by the Meloni family. In 1888 what would later become the LaCosta Lounge was opened as a ballroom, motel, and bar by the Cronecker clan.

Just across Townsend’s Inlet is the island of Seven Mile Beach, which is home to the towns of Avalon and Stone Harbor. The northern section of the island, what was later named Avalon after an aspect of the King Arthur legend, was incorporated and settled first, starting in the 1890s.

Moreover, just like Sea Isle City is home to an excellent historical museum near the bay: the Avalon History Center is a great place to learn about the unique history of the community. However, my personal favorite is the Stone Harbor Museum, which last year relocated to a larger site on Second Street and also happens to be the starting point of “The Seven Mile Beach Company Tour” that snakes through the city’s historic district. Incorporated and settled beginning in the 1910s, Stone Harbor contains some of the best preserved early twentieth century architecture anywhere along the Jersey Shore, including some unique structures such as the so-called RufWud Cottage on

the bay side of Stone Harbor. However, the oldest building in town is the Life-Saving Station, built in 1871, that is today home to the local American Legion.

Following the Seagull across Hereford Inlet leads to the Wildwoods, three towns with enough of a history to easily fill their very own column.

The first of these towns, North Wildwood, was still known as Angelsea when the Hereford Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1873. The funky motels that became popular in the post-war era and are the core of the “50s Doo Wop Architecture Heritage Tour,” extend all the way down to Wildwood Crest, the most southern of the communities. However, it is the central city of Wildwood that is home to the most history, from a downtown museum that houses relics from Dracula’s Castle on the Boardwalk, to the war memorials sitting across from the convention center.

Free Flowers!

y husband once said, “I will never feel guilty about buying books.”

Of course I responded, “Then I will never feel guilty about buying flowers.” But alas, there are limits.

You can increase the amount of plants in your garden economically through propagation. Flowers can be propagated, or multiplied, in different ways. Some plants are easy to grow from seed, but others can be rooted from cuttings—taking a piece of the stem and planting it so that you have a new plant.

You may wish to produce duplicates of your plants for various reasons. If you have a beloved or rare plant, it’s a good idea to take a cutting so if something goes wrong, it is not lost forever. You can also

take a cutting of a tender plant that won’t survive the winter. Perhaps it’s too large to bring the entire plant indoors, but you could start a smaller version from a cutting, and have it ready to replant outdoors in the spring. Or you may just want multiples of a favorite flower. Planting in masses results in a much more pleasing and dramatic impact of color. A single lavender plant is very nice, but a field of lavender is breathtaking. So instead of breaking the budget with a truckload of purchased flowers, take free samples—from yourself!

Hydrangeas are great plants to propagate from cuttings.

Simply cut from the end of a non-flowering stem.

Choose a healthy, tender, green stem that is approximately four to six inches long and cut at least two inches below the leaf nodes (where the leaves are coming out). Keep your cuttings

Fill your pot with potting soil or seed starting mix, and water so that the soil is damp but not soggy. To increase your chances of success, dip the stem cutting in a rooting hormone powder. This will promote the growth of roots, and can be purchased at most garden nurseries. Keep the top set of leaves but, if they are large, cut them in half crosswise so that the plant can use its energy to produce roots.

Remove the remaining leaves, being careful not to cut the nodes. Make a hole in the soil with a pencil or stick so you ar-

en’t removing the rooting hormone when you insert the stem into the soil. Lightly push and tamp the soil back into place. Keep your new baby out of direct sunlight and make sure the soil does not dry out. In a few weeks, your new plant should develop its own roots and will be ready to repot or plant in the garden.

Remember that these cuttings root fairly easily but are still tender and should be transplanted carefully.

Please write to me if any of you have been successful at rooting a rose in a potato. I have seen that many times on the internet but would love a first person account of success. Rooting cuttings can become an obsession.

Sometimes I have trouble enjoying a gift of cut flowers because I keep analyzing which plants I can dissect to plant in my garden.

Experiment with stem cuttings— most will succeed using the instructions above. Your new plants will be clones of the parent. This would be a great way to trade plants with your neighbors. Carry around a pair of ready scissors and you may find that you have saved a great deal of

the succulent Sedum Autumn Joy, also known as stonecrop.

You can propagate sedum and other succulents in the same basic way as the instructions above with much success. If you are pruning your plants, you can use the pieces you have cut off as the beginnings of new plants.

One year, my friend was pruning her azaleas. I took the “trash” from her pruning, used rooting hormone, and planted many cuttings. Not all rooted but I did attain quite a few new azaleas from her discarded yard waste. Now that’s how I like to upcycle!

Herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and oregano are also good candidates to multiply from cuttings.

Once you have realized how easy the process can be, you will want to try your hand at other plants such as butterfly bush, asters, clematis, and coleus. Of course we all love roses.

ecovery Force of Atlantic County, Inc is a an organization of local families impacted by the loss or detrimental effects of someone they love suffering with substance use disorder, also known as SUD. Originally formed by five Atlantic County families who lost a loved one to the opioid epidemic, the Recovery Force serves approximately 150,000 people in Atlantic and Cape May counties as New Jersey’s first recovery community organization. Through community education, recovery advocacy, and peer recovery support services, Recovery Force offers the tools and resources to reach those suffering in the local area.

The recovery force is not a prevention of treatment program, rather a group of empathetic individuals that strive to make life better for the families living with recovering loved ones. The vision of the recovery force is a community where substance use disorders and mental illnesses are understood and those seeking to recover from them can find the support that they need without fear

or shame. They work to encourage and empower those recovering to live meaningful and purposeful lives.

This entirely volunteer based organization provides local events and outreach for those still struggling with a substance use disorder, those in treatment, as well as those in post-treatment status. Information and education is offered for the families and those affected by SUD. The International Overdose Awareness and Remembrance Event is being behind the Ventnor Community Library on August 31 from 6-8pm.The event was started in 2016 to help raise awareness of the impact of overdose on loved ones and the community, as well as reduce the stigma of drug related death. The day also acknowledges the grief felt by those who have experienced loss due to SUD. Attendees of the event are being asked to wear white to signify hope for others.

ASK THE EXPERT by Dr. Rodney Brunson BABY-BOOMERS FOR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA Marijuana is now legal after 70 years (in more than 25 states including NJ). It is not legal on the federal level. It is legal only medicinally in NJ. There is legislation on the states’ legislative agenda where it should be decided if it will also become legal for recreational use. There is also hope that more than 180 dispensaries will be approved throughout the state. If the legislation passes you will see a dispensary near you. The state of NJ will classify marijuana as “for medicinal use or for recreational use”. We are interested in “medical marijuana”.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse defines medical marijuana as “using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms or illness and other conditions”.

Many baby boomers are already aware that medicinal marijuana can be helpful for those suffering with age related ARTHRITIS, FIBROMYALGIA, PSORIASIS, PAIN, APPETITE LOSS, INSOMNIA and NAUSEA. It may be useful for helping to lower the amount of pain pills used and for conditions such as PTSD. Know that it is safe when taken as directed by a knowledgeable Marijuana doctor. There are precautions that you should ask about though. Like what are some side effects that can occur if one is older. Are there interactions with some of my other medications? How much is too much to take? Is it addictive? (yes, it could be). Forget about recre-ational use or trying to cut costs or treating yourself, see a medical doctor that you trust.

Legalization of medical marijuana has been dreamed about since at least 1948 when the government made it illegal. Today’s legalized marijuana is good news for some but not so much for others. One of my goals is to assure everyone that for most persons there is not much to fear about physician recommended MM. One should be under the care of a physician with experience in prescribing it, but there are reasons why one shoe doesn’t fit all, there may be medical conditions that would preclude YOU from using it. (Just to make clear yours truly does not use marijuana in any form or psychoactive substances for that matter.) So thank you former Gov. Corzine for legalizing MM (medicinal marijuana) and Gov. Phil Murphy for expanding the program. As a physician I now have more tools in my armamentarium to help my patients if traditional methods have failed. Patients can now get certification of a medical condition that is listed on the NJMMP web site. How to get certified was covered in SHORE LOCAL’S previous article.

The number one comment I get from baby boomers: “Doc I’ve used it many, many years ago and it made me paranoid and anxious and that’s why I didn’t continue using it” Back then, one did not have any idea what was in the street weed.

Most took too much and overdosed themselves. It still can if you overdo it today but now you know what you’re are getting with a dispensary. Use the product as directed by your doctor. But still, medicinal marijuana has different effects on individuals. There is no right answer as to how much to take. Here is the big problem with dosing.

Typically, one needs just a tiny amount if using a strain with high THC. When my patients finally get their card they head to the dispensary and make their purchase for the dispensary, many smoke it like they may have in the 1960’s. They usually use too much and sleep

Baby Boomers and seniors are the fastest growing group using medicinal marijuana in the country.

But a large segment of the baby boomers do not trust the legitimacy of its medical benefits. Perhaps they think their piers just want to get high, or they just feel too anxious about using a substance that had been deemed to serve no legitimate medical purpose.

Who is a baby boomer? Baby boomers are recognized to be born from the years of early 1940’s until about the 1960’s. If you were born in the early 1940’s to mid-1950’s, you are considered an EARLY BABY BOOMER; and from the mid 50’s to mid-60’s you are a late baby boomer. Why is this important? Because early baby boomers grew up just after WWII when the tax act had just become law. This generation were more patriotic and law abiding and generally open to the suggestions of authorities. The mores of their communities were important. Whereas the late baby boomers grew up around the Vietnam war and the rebellious 60’s generation (think Woodstock). They questioned authorities more. I find late baby boomers are open to trying medicinal marijuana. Not to get high but to seek relief from physical ailments.

The early baby boomers do not seek Medicinal marijuana cards as much and tend to need more assurance about medicinal efficacy and legality (they are more anxious about possibly breaking some of the old rules of using marijuana). It is a shame to miss out on using something natural for ailments which may keep one from enjoying the golden years.

lthough horseshoe crabs live most of their lives unseen deep underwater, these creatures emerge in droves during full and new moons on the shoreline for mating season.

Hundreds of thousands of eggs are laid on New Jersey shorelines to ensure this long-lasting species’ existence for future generations.It’s no surprise that through millennia of survival horseshoe crabs have perfected their partnership with their mates.

2. Horseshoe Crabs have 10 eyes so they see everything.

Despite their hard and tank-like exterior, horseshoe crabs are extremely sensitive creatures, at least towards stimuli like light. These marine arthropods have ten eyes — a pair of compound eyes on their front shell and “photoreceptors” in other areas, primarily along the tail…so you know what that means.

Horseshoe crabs are actually not true crabs at all, being more closely related to arachnids (a group that includes spiders and scorpions) than to crustaceans (a group that includes true crabs, lobsters, and shrimp).

4. Their Get-Togethers are infamous.

During early summer months, horseshoe crabs come to shore by the droves to bump and grind their way into securing the good of their species for future generations through massive orgies.

5. They have way more children.

Like overwhelmingly so.

During spawning, the female crab partially buries herself in the sand while she deposits a cluster of about 4,000 tiny green eggs. In an evening of egg laying, a female crab can lay several egg clusters, and she may spawn repeatedly over several nights to lay 100,000 or more eggs.

6. Horseshoe Crabs are very, very……patient.

During mating season, male horseshoe crabs will wait near beaches for their ladies. Once united, the smaller male crab attaches himself to the top of the larger female’s shell by using his specialized front claws, and together they crawl to the beach. Nicholas Sparks couldn’t write a more romantic ending.

What’s The Catch

e were catching on everything, squid, gulp, minnows!!!!! The response from Andrew Affanato of Longport when asked how he and his team limited out on flounder inshore.

Nine beautiful fish and a couple of sea bass for a party of three. Dinner for the team and families.

That’s what any angler planning a trip would be happy to hear! In addition to flounder all kinds of surprises lurk under the surface. A rental boat in the Margate Bay had a huge sea turtle slide up beside them to take a look, while close inshore anglers were snagging bunker and catching cobia. Large blues chased the bunker.

Hot action on both sides of the island.

Small North Atlantic barracuda are in the mix. Not big enough to strike terror on the bay but a fun fish to view and check out the teeth!

Crabbing continues to provide stellar action with teams catching over a hundred #1’s! Our crew has cleaned close to a thousand crabs for our guests this week. Lots of cut up fingers among the clan!

An Evening in Oz

T

he Wizard of Oz, a film based on the 1900 children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was released in 1939.

The award-winning, hugely influential movie still holds a place in the hearts of many movie and music-lovers nearly 80 years after its initial release. A huge part of the film’s success and longevity comes from its classic songs, many of which were recently paid tribute to by the Ocean City Pops orchestra in their recent performance, The Wonderful Music of Oz, at the Ocean City Music Pier. As these musicians are very aware, the music that has come from The Wizard of Oz, such as “Over the Rainbow”, “If I Only Had a Brain”, and many others, are only part of the film’s legacy. Though the songs from the film are still widely known and loved today, the film has inspired multiple musicians and other artists to add their visions to the land of Oz. The Pops not only paid tribute to the classic film, but also to the music of the 1975 Broadway show The Wiz, as well as Elton John’s 1973 “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. The Ocean City Pops also paid tribute to one of the most recent well-known interpretations of The Wizard of Oz, the long running Broadway musical Wicked, performing such songs as “Defying Gravity” and “Popular”. The orchestra was joined by three main vocalists, Scott Coulter, Melvin Tunstall III, Kelli Rabke, as well as pianist and musical director John Boswell. Each of these talented performers have plenty of on and off Broadway experience, with Rabke having previously played the part of Dorothy. Throughout the performance, Coulter explained some of the history and connections between these different interpretations of the classic story. This conversation between him, his fellow performers,

and the audience helped to make the audience invested in seeing what new ways they could explore the songs that they had already heard many times before. Though a few songs were clearly more focused on the vocal performances, as there were quite a few piano ballads, the use of the orchestral songs made for a very enthralling experience. Though the audience wasn’t in a theater watching The Wizard of Oz, or on Broadway seeing Wicked, the orchestral and vocal performances seemed to cre-

ate the same immersive experience as the films and shows. The modern entertainment enthusiast still has a lot of love for the wonderful land of Oz, but not nearly as much as the modern performer. Vocalists and musicians who grew up hearing the songs from the film and The Wiz were inspired, and eventually worked to learn how to perform, and create their own music. Modern interpretations such as Wicked show that, not only do audiences still love The Wizard of Oz, but performers do, too. If you ask any aspiring theater actor about Wicked, they will likely tell you of their desire to play Elphaba, Glinda, or Fiyero. For the fifteen years that the show has been on Broadway, people continue to buy tickets. Though the lovable characters and the unique world are a large part of the series’ success, I would say that its success on the stage shows how wonderful the music of Oz really is.

Fitness Myth Busters

ver go into a new gym or start a new training program and hear 50 different opinions given on what to do, how to eat, and so

on?

Here are my favorite fitness myth busters that I’m about to break down just for you.

“If you are weigh a lot, you are considered fat.” False. Muscle and fat weigh the same, since muscle doesn’t take up as much space as fat, and is denser. Anyone starting a new weight training program will gain weight at the start. Our bodies are 70 percent water. Muscle tissue is about 75 percent water. When we lift weights, it causes inflammation, which can make you retain water, which is why a few weeks in you might see the number on the scale go up. Don’t freak out! Trust the process! Here’s what’s going on in that body: weight training stimulates the body to build that amazing lean muscle, which will then bump up your metabolism! By doing this, it increases your fat burning rate. Within a few weeks you will be leaner because of your new muscle growth. Give yourself a round of applause!

“One drink a week is ok.” Wrong! When we drink we eat like garbage. Alcohol stops the fat burn since it forces your liver to work double time to detox. Not great!

“Do cardio until you lose weight, then lift weights.” Wrong again, my friend. This myth will just cause you to lose muscle mass, which then causes your metabolism to slow down, and it is downhill from there. Weight training doesn’t burn thousands of calories, but it does build lean muscle mass which will

make you burn for hours post workout, and your energy release will be sky high. Muscle helps burn fat! Cardio plus weights equal the best of both worlds. “ Carbs are bad.” This one makes me cringe. Lets just think about this. The brain needs glucose to work. Glucose comes from carbs. If you can’t think, then you need to add some brown rice or quinoa to your diet.

I’m not saying to go and eat 25 pounds of pasta or a baker’s dozen of bagels, but your body needs a certain amount of carbs to function. Sure, you may be on a carb free diet, and it might work initially, but you cannot keep this lifestyle up for long. Good carbs will take your body to its goal. Eliminating a whole food group out of the pyramid will get you nowhere.

“Women can tone, but not build muscle.

Only men can build muscle.” Wrong. Men and women grow muscle the same exact way. We all release the same growth hormone when we train. Men just grow faster because they release testosterone, and they have a lot more than women do. Building and toning are two different words with the same meaning. The end result to both is muscle hypertrophy, which is an increase in size of the skeletal muscle through an increased flow in cells. Women are afraid to get big so that’s why we use the word tone.

Tone means leaner with more muscle mass; sound similar to building muscle? Yes! Just some fitness myth busters that I wanted to point out. I hope you enjoyed learning some facts of fitness!

thoroughly enjoy producing The Light each week as a radio broadcast, podcast and column here in Shore Local.
