Hometown Hero: Michael Braxton

F

or Michael Braxton, this was when he lost his leg.

As a police officer assigned to the community relations unit, Braxton worked with children and families of Atlantic City.

In a time when the community and the authorities clashed, Braxton not only protected the city, but offered family-friendly events for civilians.

Braxton and his unit held homework completion contests for children, National Night Out, and junior police days.

On June 9 th , 2013, Braxton had his right foot amputated, after a motorcycle accident on the Black Horse Pike.

“It impacted every aspect of my life,” said Braxton, as he described how his relationship with his girlfriend and children, career, and even self-esteem were affected by his injury. “Accepting that for the rest of my life I will look different, and people will look at me different upon first glance.”

Early on in his recovery, Braxton was approached by the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which inspired him to run triathlons. He says he was inspired by the amputees’ success, and “a light bulb went off.”

Braxton says that he has always been motivated by his family to show them that, in any situation, they can aspire to greatness.

With a diligent work ethic, Braxton was able to regain his strength, working with Island Gym trainer Jason Dobson , and now he comp etes in the 100 meter dash and high jump.

Braxton recounts how multiple people, even at the gym, claim that he inspires them. “I was shocked, and I had no idea at that point the impact I had on others.”

On June 2015, two years after his accident, Braxton raced in Min-

neapolis, MN. He is now classified as a national and international T4 4 para-athlete.

He now prepares for the race of his life – to qualify for the Summer Olympics.

The remaining qualifiers for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics will race on June 30 th

in South Carolina. On July 3rd, the Paralympian will learn his fate.

“To anyone facing a similar situation I would tell them first that, I love you and am here for you,” said Braxton.

“Like me, you have been chosen to work harder than most, and help even more people then you’d ever imagine. Stay positive, embrace the new you, fight through the pain of rehabilitation, be patient, continue to strive to be the best person that you can be.”

Ground-Water: Where Does It Come From and How Did It Get Here?

o you ever wonder where your water comes from or how this beautiful coast came into existence? Through a series of articles, this being the first, here is a small glimpse into our local geology and groundwater resources.

Our region of New Jersey is almost entirely dependent on ground-water resources for public and private water supplies. To understand the existence, movement, and quality of groundwater, we must first explore the underlying

geology. New Jersey is divided into four distinct geologic areas (geologic provinces). Listed north to south, these are: the Valley and Ridge, the New Jersey Highlands, the Piedmont, and the Coastal Plain. The roughly southern half of New Jersey (if you draw a diagonal line across the narrowest part of the state) is underlain by the Atlantic Coastal Plain, which contains the vast majority of the State’s ground-water resources. The entire Atlantic Coastal Plain extends south to Georgia and north to Long Island. The New Jersey Coastal Plain underlies 11 counties: Cape May, Cumberland, Salem, Atlantic, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Ocean, Monmouth, and portions of Mercer and Middlesex counties.

The New Jersey Coastal Plain is the youngest of all the geologic provinces in New Jersey. During the Jurassic Period when dinosaurs ruled the earth (roughly 200 to 145 million years ago), the North American continent split from the African continent. As the Atlantic Ocean opened up, the ancestral Appalachian mountains (which were as high or higher than the present-day Himalayas) began to erode

or gravel. Confining beds of silty or clayey sediments often separate the aquifers of the New Jersey Coastal Plain vertically. A confining bed is a relatively impermeable layer that does not readily transmit water.

The New Jersey Coastal Plain is further divided into an Inner Coastal Plain (western side) and an Outer Coastal Plain. New Jersey’s nickname as The Garden State comes from the fertile soils of the Inner Coastal Plain. The New Jersey Coastal Plain consists of approximately 25 different geologic formations and roughly 12 aquifer units. Most people have heard of the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, the uppermost major aquifer underlying the coastal part of the state. The Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system will be discussed further in a subsequent article.

and the resulting sediment was carried toward the ocean, accumulating along the coast and continental shelf. These materials were deposited as a massive “wedge” of sand, gravel, silt and clay layers, becoming thicker and deeper in the southeasterly direction. Some of these materials settled out offshore, while others were deposited along a shifting coastline or by broad expanses of streams. Fresh water from natural infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt gradually displaced the saline water in the pore spaces of these sediments, creating massive reserves of fresh water. Today, in southern New Jersey, we draw our water from the sandy or gravelly layers, which we refer to as aquifers. An aquifer is a layer of rock or sediment that can transmit water in sufficient quantities to be an economically viable resource. The term aquifer comes from the Latin words aqua (meaning “water”) and ferre (meaning “to bear”) so literally means “to bear water.” Contrary to popular belief, groundwater is rarely obtained from “underground rivers”. The Farmer’s Daughter…

reetings Readers! I hope you are all well and enjoying the fact that Spring has finally – and most definitely - sprung here in Jersey.

Everything is all nice and green and growing like wildfire!

And yes, before you ask, I really am a farmer’s daughter. Born and bred and raised on a small family farm in the Central part of the great Garden State. Danged proud of it too; don’t any of you ever think otherwise. Not only that, but I have had the luxury and blessing of having been able to inherit my family’s farm.

Don’t get me wrong, now…the recent crossing of my dad was and still is somewhat painful and sad. But don’t you be feeling sorry for me… we Farm Folk tend to have a wee bit better relationship with such things than most. Chalk it up to being in tune with the changing of the seasons and knowing that everything must be harvested in due time; even us. It’s part of that whole Circle of Life stuff you hear about.

In the weeks and months and hopefully years to come, I hope that

we will both learn and grow as I share what wisdom and knowledge that I was lucky enough to absorb from my family. Well, mostly my dad. He was a farmer like his father and his father before him and his father… I didn’t take any fancy – schmancy agricultural classes when I went to college.

Nope! None of that for me! Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you. But what I know, I learned

from the time I was old enough to toddle along after my grandma to help collect the eggs newly laid by our small flock of Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, and Barnevelders.

Just to be clear this isn’t just gonna be some tiny little column where I tell you how to grow the best tomatoes or prune your raspberry plants.

Oh no! I mean, I will, but while I like to think I know a pretty fair amount about farming, I willingly, openly, and truthfully admit to not knowing more than I know! So think of my writing more along the lines of you, dear reader, and I both learning how to be farmers. I’ll be the one going through the trenches and you’ll be the ones to also reap the benefits. Sound good?

Since it’s already mid - May - like when did that happen??? - let us talk about plowing. This is where we hook this big old metal thing with what looks kinda like scapula, aka shoulder blades, up to the back of a big ol’ tractor and pull it through the soil.

Or we hope through the soil...that’s always the plan at least. Provided the soil isn’t too dry or too wet; farming is all about everything falling into place.

Timing is everything.

The whole idea is to turn over the soil to break it up to make it easier to plant. Not to mention to plow under the cover crop we planted back in the Fall. See, ever since the Dust Bowl of the early 1900’s, farmers learned the hard way about how precious good top soil is and how easy it is for the wind and rain to take it way. So to compensate, we usually plant either rye or wheat in the fall as the roots of those plants will help to keep the dirt from blowing away during the winter. And the plants themselves will help catch any particle of dirt that might get picked up by the wind. As an added bonus, when we plow it

under come Spring, it becomes what is called “green manure”: it puts a lot more nutrients back into the soil than it took out. Are we farmers smart or what?

Anyway...so even though I have helped my dad hook our plow up to the tractor before, I’ve never had to do it myself. Luckily, I’ve got a great bunch of guys - henceforth referred to as “My Guys” - who are helping me out with the mechanical stuff.

So far they have tuned up my one tractor and got her running like she just came off the assembly line! (She was built in 1949, just so you know.)

They have also done a bang-up job on actually plowing the fields for me!

Let me let you in on a little secret: farmers get proud of being able to plow straight. It’s like a badge of honor to be able to do so. While it took My Guys a bit to get it down pat - being non-farmers after all - down pat is what they got!

Alas dear reader, sometimes when you’re plowing, you might dislodge a nest or two. Sometimes the turtles will lay their eggs before you get the plowing done. Sometimes the rabbits birth their young in a nest right smack dab in the middle of your field. Thing is, Mother Nature being so great at what she does, makes it danged near impossible to see the babies before, well, you know... as was the case this very afternoon.

But fret not my friend! My one guy who was plowing, he missed the nest of new born bunnies and just rearranged their nest a little. They are sooo cute, the babies! Good Gooney goo-goo are they ever!

Funny thing is: even though my guys are big ol’ manly men, they were kinda upset over the thought of possibly hurting baby animals. That’s why they called me to come take a look and save them. (Flashback to my dad doing the same thing! Oh how many babies did I nurse back to health...)

Luckily, I just had to rebuild the nest a bit and put the bunnies back in it. They kinda rolled out as the plow blade went by. But none were hurt!!! Heck! They didn’t even know what happened as their eyes are still closed. And don’t you worry as momma wasn’t far away and was waiting for us annoying humans to leave the area.

So now I’ve got what looks like a dirt runway down the middle of one of my fields. Fabulous. And it’ll stay like that until the babies leave their nest.

What?? I couldn’t exactly keep plowing there, could l? Like I said, timing is everything.

I

have wondered why a place like the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, which is bursting with life, should come to be known as barren. It just seems like a mistake. However, there is a reason why the million or so acres of protected forest are known as the Pine Barrens. Colonial farmers, who planted traditional crops on freshly cleared forestland, were not happy with the results. It looked fertile, but the sandy, high-acid soil did not yield a good harvest.

These pioneer farmers declared the area barren and abandoned their homesteads.

They are long gone, but the name Pine Barrens has stuck around to this day.

The same infertile soil conditions that earned the Pine Barrens its name are perfect for orchids and a group of plants called heaths (Ericaceae). Heaths include cranberry, blueberry, laurel, and huckleberry plants. The local economy evolved to work with what the forest had to offer. These industries include: cranberry farming, blueberry farming, moss gathering, logging, bog ore smelting, and glass factories supplied by local sand that melted into some of the clearest natural glass on the continent. Several of these industries have faded, but the vibrant, intrepid orchid still blooms over the rusty bog ore forges.

There are thirty varieties of orchids that bloom wild in Atlantic County. The different varieties blossom in waves beginning in late April and continue to mid July. There are several orchid societies based in southern New Jersey, which offer activities for the avid orchid enthusiast, including searching for and reporting rare species. For those who just want a peek at one of our local wonders, there are nature walks and hiking trails through orchid hot spots offered by South Jersey parklands. The wild orchids in bloom now through May are: Southern Twayblade, Whippoorwill’s Shoe, Whorled Pogonia, and Dragon’s Mouth.

An authentic bit of Piney folklore concerns one of the varieties of orchid on the current blooming schedule, the one called the Whippoorwill’s Shoe. As the tale goes, when the days start getting longer and snow is but a dream, as the taffy-colored sunset dims, and twilight spreads her wings, the whippoorwill starts calling, calling, calling. All night it goes on calling, until the morning light.

Then tucks into a leafy nest upon the ground and watches, watches, watches. Motionless it watches. It watches for a plant to sprout.

A plant that bears a magical bud the bird will wear upon its feet to take away its every care.

Because of this story, it became a local custom for children to stroll into the woods where whippoorwills were heard, to seek the pink shoes that the bird coaxed into bloom, the same as some might look for a lucky fourleaf clover.

So… the next time you hear a whippoorwill, imagine it hopping around in pink fluffy bedroom slippers and it will be sure to bring a smile to your mind.

Egg Harbor Township Offers a Wealth of Opportunities

E

gg Harbor Township government is made up of five elected committee members, which include a mayor and deputy mayor. The present government consists of Mayor James J. McCullough, Deputy Mayor Paul Hodson, and committee members Joe Cafero, Frank Finnerty and Laura Pfrommer.

The Township of Egg Harbor is situated in the southeast portion of Atlantic County, contiguous with Atlantic City. With a land area of approximately 68 square miles, it is one of the largest municipalities in the state.

The township is bounded by Hamilton Township to the west; Galloway Township to the north; the cities of Absecon, Pleas-

antville, Northfield, Linwood, Atlantic City and Somers Point to the east; Longport and Ocean City to the southeast; and Estell Manor to the south. Egg Harbor Township once encompassed all of Atlantic County, including Atlantic City.

Our community is made up of diverse areas of woodlands, waterfront and residential growth areas. Egg Harbor Township has more waterfront than any other town in New Jersey – from West Atlantic City all the way behind Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, Longport, Ocean City and Somers Point, up to Mays Landing.

Farmington, Bargaintown, Cardiff, Scullville and West Atlantic City make up the majority of the township. Anchorage Poynte and Seaview Harbor provide many waterfront residences. We are part of the Pinelands, and as a result our population exploded in the last 20 years.

From 2000 to 2010 the population went from 30,058 to 43,323 – a 44 percent increase. School populations increased substantially in correlation. Our residents approved many school building projects to keep up with the demand in education.

Meanwhile, the mayor and Township Committee kept the local-purpose tax one of the lowest in Atlantic County for full-service communities. Members of the Board of Education will be elected in the regular November election along with Township Committee members.

Likewise, the township has kept up with the demand for additional municipal services and recreational opportunities.

We have purchased many acres of open space for preservation and recreation. Our parks are centralized and serve many needs.

Bargaintown Park was completed to provide soccer, tennis , pickle ball and baseball opportunities in addition to those provided at Canale Park. A new 55,000-square-foot Community Center was completed in 2007 and provides a home for recreational services, art and crafts, basketball, fine arts programs and many other community activities. We have miles of trails for use by our residents, and our Arboretum provides an opportunity to enjoy peace and tranquility in a wooded setting. Veterans Park is the home to football, cheerleading, baseball, BMX and street hockey, and many

other recreation activities are provided by numerous groups. We have 6-18 hole golf courses and own our own golf course that many residents enjoy. We also have many marinas for fishing and boating.

Egg Harbor Township is the home of Atlantic City International Airport, which offers flights throughout the United States and is the home of Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, the 177th Fighter Wing, and the Next Generation Aviation Research and Technology Park.

The Atlantic City Expressway and Garden State Parkway intersect our town, while major bus lines provide public transportation. It is easy to connect to anywhere in New Jersey and surrounding states from the township.

Residents and visitors can enjoy our expansive Great Egg Harbor River frontage, our many parks, and our cultural and recreational activities. Business growth continues in Egg Harbor Township, and excellent restaurants provide a wide variety of cuisine, but our wonderful residents are the real reason Egg Harbor Township is a great place to live.

SPARK For A Change

n Sunday, May 15th, the local community and some of its leaders joined together to raise awareness for suicide prevention at Kennedy Plaza in Atlantic City. The day started with live music

by JAS Nature and Shades Of Sobriety (pictured), who played a mixture of original songs and covers of some classics, all while registration for a walk to raise awareness was ongoing.

The organization “SPARK,” led by their director Kristina McErlain, along with a couple dozen volunteers, was handing out information as well as collecting donations. They were also registering the 230 people from the local area who came out to show support. The Atlantic County Toys For Kids Program (ACTFK), along with the Leo group from Atlantic City High School, were among the many volunteers.

Before the walk started, the crowd was welcomed by Atlantic City mayor Don Guardian, who spoke about the issue at hand. He was followed by Atlantic County Sheriff Frank Balles, SPARK director and ACTFK board member Kristina McErlain, Freeholder John Risley, Assemblyman Chris Brown, among

a great day and the community showed its strength, raising awareness of an issue so critical to our youth.

SPARK (Suicide Prevention and Awareness Resources for Kids) was formed just over two months ago (under The Atlantic County Toys For Kids program) to raise awareness of the plague of youth and teen

suicide. Director of Spark, Kristina McErlain, stated, “If we continue to tear down the walls of stigma and speak openly and clearly about suicide, as a community, we can save lives. The most important power among us is HOPE.” The ACTFK program is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that has been improving the quality of life for children in Atlantic County since 1988. The ACTFK led by retired Sgt. Gregory Depiano and his board work year round to distribute toys to the youth around Atlantic County. The focus of SPARK is to offer those in need the resources and direction necessary to get help. All donations collected by SPARK members and affiliates from walk and other events is to ultimately bring a national training program to the area four counseling.

he stakes couldn’t be higher, as the world erupts in panic. Humans are being abducted in cities all over the planet. UFO’s are penetrating Earth’s atmosphere, and leaving destruction in their wake. XCOM is a top-secret organization, whose objective is to use every means possible to stop the alien invaders through research, weapons development, interception ,and combat. You, the player, has been chosen as the Commander of this operation.

With the weight of the world on your shoulders, you must combat an alien invasion that is always several steps ahead of you. Soldiers will fall, countries will secede, panic will ensue.

To win this battle, you must use the power of your mind. This is the world

of XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus for the PlayStation Vita.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus is a portable iteration of the famous reboot of the classic turn-based sci-fi strategy game, XCOM: enemy Unknown. Originally released in 1994 for computer owners worldwide, XCOM became a cult hit for its atmosphere, strategic combat, and deep immersion of a secret war within a larger conflict. In 2012, publisher 2k Games and developer Fireaxis Game Studios released a full reboot on the original game with XCOM: Enemy Unknown for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and personal computers via Valve’s Steam service. Enemy Unknown was critically praised for its expanded ideas on the original, as well as paying tribute to the first game. The reboot invited a new generation of gamers, while staying true to the original game. The 2012 reboot featured a stellar presentation, with detailed graphics, a solid framerate, and a very profound sound variety. Most importantly, the game featured fast-paced, engaging stra-

tegic gameplay, as well as the choices presented to make your team the best it can be in combat. That entire experience has been made for the PlayStation Vita, Sony PlayStation’s portable handheld gaming device.

Anatomy Of A Surfboard

any of you know what surfing is and I am sure that some of you surf or have tried to surf, but do you know what actually goes into shaping a surfboard from start to finish? New Jersey has an amazing surf scene with experienced local shapers creating masterpieces up and down the coast. The process is somewhat complex and I want to fill you in on the steps involved. I got a chance to chat with two local shaping legends, Brian Heritage and Brian Wynn, to help explain the process of creating a surfboard and how they got involved.

Let’s back it up to my college days, to the year 1999, when I was an aspiring surfer looking to make in the tough surf industry. Being raised in Maryland, spending my summers in Ocean City, NJ I acquired a love for surfing which led to competing up and down the East Coast. At the time I was supported by Hurley International and the former label, Fetish Surfboards. In addition to being team manager for Fetish, I also worked at a local NJ surfboard factory which put out brands like Fly Surfboards (Shaper: Paul Baymore) and of course Fetish Surfboards (Shaper: Matt Thompson).

It was an eye opening experience and working at a factory, you get a chance to appreciate how much work goes into creating a surfboard.

So where does this process begin?

There are two types of customers for the local shaper; you have your stock boards, which are going to appeal to the general public or the ones you see in the surf shops, and you have the custom surfboard. Once the size and shape of the surfboard are decided, the shaper can start the process involving the “foam blank.” This piece of foam (varying in size) has a wood stringer running down the middle for support. The shaper will slowly cut and plane away the foam to get the desired shape, which will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours depending on the size of the surfboard or the skill level of the shaper. According to Brian Heritage, who shaped his first board in 1978, “the most importa nt part of shap-

ing is keeping the board symmetrical throughout the process.” Shaping takes years and years of practice to master in order to get the precision needed for the surfboard to function properly.

A second-generation shaper, Brian Heritage, of Heritage Surf and Sport in Sea Isle City, has been creating surfboards for years. At an early age, Brian was exposed to shaping through his father Dan Heritage, and watching legendary shapers Tom Parrish, Michael Baron, John Carper, and Jeff Bushman.

From them he learned how “the subtle nuances of the concaves and fin setups change the game. I had a crash course on the evolution of surfing.” I asked Brian if he knew at a young age he would become a shaper and his answer surprised me. “I was a kid who competed around the world but didn’t have the proper equipment. So I learned that travelling on the World Tour, I needed high performance equipment to advance and because of this I started shaping.” With progression and performance a focus on the Professional Surfing Tour, Brian had the knowhow from years of observing to get started. “My dad’s shapes were great, but they couldn’t translate to what I was looking for or needed for the World Tour.” Taking notes from Tom Hogan, a highly skilled woodworker turned shaper; Brian learned to “approach the board just like a cabinet.” Brian, with his wife Jamie and kids Brett and Brooke at his side, still finds time to surf and shape while running the surf shop. Heritage says that the most gratifying part of shaping a surfboard is “working with the younger kids who keep me constantly evolving, producing equipment that help better their future in surfing.”

So now, after the board is shaped, we have a white piece of foam with nothing on it, but it is looking like a surfboard.

Next, the color or artwork is added. Brian Wynn comments, “I really enjoy the artistic, creative side in this part of the process, which can really set you apart from the other guys.” Once the artwork and logos are on the board, the fin setups and leash plugs are added. There are all kinds of variations, but essentially these

are the places where you put your leash and fins. For those of you that are not familiar, the fins are what a surfer uses to steer or turn the board and the leash is a safety device to keep the board close to you.

Brian Wynn, of Wynn Surfboards out of Atlantic County, has been shaping since 1994, and always knew how to make things because of the time spent in his dad’s woodshop. With a passion in surfing, Brian said, “I was curious why I couldn’t make a board. So I bought a kit from WRV and there was no internet back then so you figured it out on your own.” Spending years out in Southern California perfecting his skills, Brian came back to NJ a few years ago. Sur-

rounded by girls, his wife Melissa and two daughters Anna and Emily, Brian had found the time to pass the stoke to thousands of surfers.

After the board is shaped, color added, and fins taken care of, next comes the glassing. This process involves using fiberglass and resin to strengthen the board and one that Wynn calls “ the hardest to learn.” Once the resin is dried, next comes what the industry refers to as the “hot coat.” This is a second coat of resin using a few different ingredients which helps strengthen and seal the board.

Finally comes the sanding and finishing.

After many hours of hard labor mixed with a few hours of drying and setting, you have the surfboard!

With the industry constantly changing and evolving, both of the Brians have been a staple in the South Jersey Surf Scene. So the next time you see a surfboard attached to the roof of a car or you see a surfer running to the ocean with a board under his arm, you have a better idea of what went into the process of creating that surfboard.

he Ocean City Boardwalk has been a tourist attraction for many who visit the Jersey Shore in the summer. In May of 2015 the boardwalk suffered a big loss.

No one was hurt but 2015 was a little different, at least for the surf community. That May an electrical fire spread through a fully stocked 7th St. Surf Shop, ending the summer season at that location before the season even started.

The 7th St Surfing Beach in Ocean City, NJ, a well-known surf break, became official about 46 years ago. One of the first surfing beaches in NJ, surfers flocked to OC in the summers. Entrepreneur, Larry Friedel started 7th St Surf Shop on an idea and the passion for surfing. Now with multiple locations, 7th St Surf Shop is heading into their 30th season. Larry spent his younger days working at his father’s arcade then eventually he had his own arcade. “I would surf before work; I would surf during my lunch break; I would surf after work at 7th St;” said Friedel. “So I started the shop for two reasons- my passion for surfing and the location at the only surfing beach.”

The new, revamped shop on the boardwalk is back to bring you all of your surfing needs. From surfboards to skateboards, clothing and accessories, 7th St Surf Shop will continue their legacy and take care of the beach lifestyle.

In addition to all the amazing products they carry, they also offer surfing lessons and surfboards rentals. They have been giving lessons since the 80’s and Larry added “I was the first as far as I know to

bring surf instruction to the public here in our area. I wanted to make surfing accessible and easy to get to the beach with the boards.” The surfing lessons, headed by musician/surfer Matt Ellison, are offered in the summer season from 9am to 12pm at the 7th St. Surfing Beach.

With the rebuilt store at 654 Boardwalk set to open Memorial Day Weekend, 7th St. Surf Shop will be back in full force.

Elephants For Autism Festival To Feature More Than 125 Bands This Weekend

MAYS LANDING – Elephants for Autism organization will be hosting a music festival this weekend, from May 20th to the 22nd. Over 125 bands will be performing at the Watering Hole in May’s Landing. All profits benefit the music camp run by the organization, which helps children with autism to express themselves through music.

The music camp offers music therapy, which helps children with autism overcome sensory imbalances and communicate more efficiently. The program is located in the Archway

School in Marlton, and will begin this June.

Jerry Ryan, the founder and organizer of Elephants for Autism, says

that he is inspired by his son, Jeremy, who has autism. “Jeremy is my greatest inspiration and the love of my life.

We are healing each other through

music and now are in a situation to help other parents and children in the same way. None of this would be possible without him. He is my driving force.”

The name, Elephants for Autism, comes from historic and biological roots. Ryan says that elephants are very compassionate and caring, especially for those in need. They are also a symbol of wisdom in various Asian cultures, and represent inclusiveness and gentleness.

Bands such as “Little War Twins” from Boston will be playing this weekend, and Ryan expects a great turnout for a “great cause.”

Tickets are $10 per day, and $25 for the entire weekend. Bands will be playing from dusk to dawn. The best way to donate is by attending the event or by donating to the Archway School, in Atco.

Strange Words Malcolm Tent: the Original Punk Rock Accordionist.

elcome to the inaugural edition of Strange Words. The name is something of an extension of my radio show that I do for WLFR (91.7 on your FM dial), which I call Strange Ways Radio. Here, we’ll be talking music, local bands, artists, and maybe even some pop culture.

Let me start with a man who has become a friend of mine over the last several years, Malcolm Tent, the original punk rock accordionist. Bands like the Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and Gogol Bordello have been famous for integrating the accordion (among other instruments) into their ethnic brands of punk rock. However, Malcolm happened to have done it first, years before said bands. If you Google punk rock accordionist, you’ll find Malcolm Tent’s image among the top results.

To say that he’s been around would be an understatement. This is no slight to the man. He would probably say that he’s like the Forrest

Gump of music. Before he went punk, he was in San Francisco in the 60s under his previous nom de plume, Tumbleweed. But it was during the late 70s and early 80s when he became part of the punk scene at the legendary CBGB. He rubbed elbows with the best in the punk movement.

In fact, I remember a few years ago, while attending a Batusis show (featuring Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls and Cheetah Chrome from the Dead Boys), Malcolm and Cheetah spent time hanging out talking about old times. It was fun being the fly on the wall in that room.

Malcolm would say his music is an acquired taste. Sometimes he’ll yell like a madman, pounding on his accordion. Yet at other times, he’ll play a soft tune. He loves to stir the pot with political songs and in the next breath, play a song as lewd and crude as his heroes in the Rolling Stones. All the while, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, knowing his rock accordion is something of a novelty. He loves his puns. Most of his song titles are such

from “Hardchord” to “Weeda People” in his recent album with WLFR alum, 1Adam12, “Pun Crock” (say it three times fast). Even his chosen name is a pun. That is not to say he limits himself to doing only puns. One of my favorite songs of his is a straight ahead rocker, called “Keep Rockin.” He’s been known to mix in a cover from the aforementioned Stones or something obscure like Larry and the Blue Notes’ “Night of the Sadist.” He once made national television on USA Network’s “Up All Night” in the 80s, where he performed a song call “Good/Evil” that only used those two words.

With songs like that, it’s obvious some of his best live shows are around Halloween, where he has often worn an L. E. D. lighted mask.

In addition to playing around on his own, Malcolm is a staple among local festival and charity shows. He’s played benefits for WLFR, most recently this past October for their 31st anniversary. He’ll be returning to the Elephants For Autism festival, which will be in Mays Landing this year at

the Watering Hole Café, May 20th through the 22nd.

Throughout his years, Malcolm has played in various forms. He’s had a full band with him in different lineups.

He’s played with just a guitar or bass player or even drummer respectively.

And of course, he’s been solo on his own with his trusty accordion in tow.

Malcolm Tent’s music is fun and a little crazy, and with a viewpoint entirely original. While there are many YouTube clips of him around made by fans, he’s still old school.

So old school, in fact, if you want to purchase his music, it’s best to ask him at a live performance.

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat with half of the salt.

Cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes, then pour in the rice and stir until coated with oil. Pour in the chicken stock or water, then bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to low and simmer until the rice is cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Char the poblanos over an open flame until blackened on all sides. You can do this over a gas stove top, on the grill, or under the broiler. Place the blackened peppers in a bowl, cover, and set aside to cool.

While the rice cooks, remove the blackened skins from the poblanos

and use a knife to scrape out the seeds. Avoid doing this under water, as it will wash off all the beautiful charred flavor. Chop up the peppers very small.

Once the rice has finished cooking, remove the lid and stir in the poblanos, the remaining salt, corn, Mexican crema or sour cream, 3/4 of the cheese and half of the scallions.

Transfer to a medium casserole dish (9x9, 6x10, etc.) and spread out evenly. Top with the remaining cheese and bake until bubbly and browned around the edges, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Top with remaining scallions and cilantro if desired, and serve. Leftovers reheat beautifully.

2016 Phillies Are The Talk Of The Baseball World

hen the 2016 Major League Baseball season started, the over/ under line for wins was 66.5. Many people think they would be near the bottom of the National League East along with the Atlanta Braves. Many outsiders consider the Phillies a good two to three years away from being in legit contention for a playoff spot. So far in 2016, this Phillies team has exceeded expectations.

This whole process started last June when Ryne Sandberg stepped down as manager. Pete Mackanin was named interim manager. The club then announced Andy McPhail would be named team president following the 2015 season. He is a well-respected baseball man who won two World Series titles with the Twins in the 1980’s. More recently, he was an executive with the Orioles.

A few big trades followed, most notably Cole Hamels that brought a huge package of prospects in return. It was

Phillies President Andy MacPhail soon announced that long time General Manager Ruben Amaro would not be returning for the 2016 season. The search for a new GM led the Phillies to find and eventually hire Matt Klentak. He last worked as assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

He also worked with Andy McPhail in

Baltimore. Matt has made a handful of trades, most notably Ken Giles to bring more youth into the organization that needed to rebuild. He also acquired veterans Jeremy Hellickson and Charlie Morton to anchor the rotation.

When spring training arrived, it was a different atmosphere. Pete Mackanin has bought a calming influence to the locker room. He has made players accountable

for their mistakes, but doesn’t throw them under the bus to the media. He congratulates players when they succeed and the players love playing for him.

So far this season, the Phillies pitching has been excellent. The club is leading the league in shutouts. Closer Jeanmar Gomez is among the league leaders in saves. Through Saturday May 14th, this club is within two games of 1st place. Clutch hitting has been a huge part of the early season success and it’s a different hero each night. This team is extremely young, but veterans such as Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz are teaching these young players how to win.

With young pitchers Aaron Nola, Vince Velsaquez to go along with position players Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera, this team has a very promising future. The farm system is strong as well with highly regarded prospects at every level. This Phillies club has surprised many people this year, and as these young players continue to grow there will be playoff baseball at Citizens Bank Park in the not too distant future.

Stockton University Sports A Bright Future

ith Stockton University transitioning to the summer sessions, sports are on hold until the fall semester of 2016.

There is high optimism for successful Osprey athletics come September, chief among them: Men’s Basketball. The Stockton Men’s Basketball team has won three straight NJAC Championships and five championships over nine years. Head Coach, Gerry Mathews, has had an impressive and successful career with the Ospreys. Last season the Ospreys finished with their fifth consecutive twenty-win season with a record of 21 and 7. Having an overall record of 603-243, Matthews is the 16th head coach to achieve the six hundred win milestone. Senior Armin Cane displayed his leadership for the Ospreys all season by leading the team in scoring, three-point field goals, and free throws. Twenty-three of his twenty-eight starts resulted in double digit scoring and he received

Lindsay Schuele, Rebecka Zabilowicz, Idi Uffen many different post-season honors.

The Ospreys also have many players in their sophomore and junior year.

Junior forward Maurice Hart and sophomore forward Darius Jerkins are two players who will undoubtedly have a big impact for the Ospreys next season. Hart has averaged

twelve points and six rebounds over the last season. Jerkins made all around improvements in his stats from the 2015-16 season (compared to his first season in 2014-15). Combined leadership by Mathews as well as a few upcoming role players will all but guarantee an exciting 2016-17.

Stockton Women’s Volleyball has been another strong team for a significant amount of time, winning the NJAC title consecutively for the past eight years. In addition, the volleyball team recently made a run into the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the forty-one year history of the program. To compliment the team’s success this past season, three major NJAC volleyball awards were earned by Stockton University, and five players were selected to be all-conference. Head coach Allison Walker has won Coach of the Year in the NJAC for the second year (consecutively) and five times throughout her career. Junior Lindsay Schuele was named the NJAC Player of the Year and junior Rebecka Zabilowicz was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Year. Stockton Women’s Volleyball also has a majority of the roster to return next season, with a balance of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. After a strong 2015 season for both teams, it is expected that the Ospreys will build on their proven power in the 2016 season, as well as the foreseeable future.

After scanning the world, missions will become available and you will deploy your team into combat.

Combat takes place in a turn-based setting, allowing you to make thoughtful decisions that have impacts on your team. Players will strategically position your soldiers and face an alien enemy that is adapting to your tactics. The invaders come in various types, ranging from stealth, squid-like aliens to mechanized war machines. They are smart and will try to outflank your forces. However, if you use the right tactics, you can achieve victory.

As the game goes forward, the enemy will get tougher. Players can choose to go above and beyond by upgrading their soldiers, turning them into genetically-enhanced mutants or fully-armed cyborg MEC troopers. Even then, the invaders will do everything they can to stop you. They will even gain the trust of sympathizers, EXALT. These are

humans who will work to disrupt your operations as well.

The battles can be bitter as well.

Each member of your team can make up to two turns. Each Turn can provide movement or dish out firepower.

The gameplay mechanics, while easy to learn, provide an amazing level of depth and possibility. Every time an alien defeats a member of your team, it feel like a bitter loss. For every enemy down, it is a small cheer of victory.

With proper base and resource management, players can expect a rewarding and immersive tactical experience. Every battle feels most important, giving the sensation that every choice matters. Players will truly feel the role of being humanity’s last hope, bringing an absolutely thrilling feeling to players. Once players pick this game up, it is very hard to put down. Players grow attached to their team and the XCOM mission, making every challenge that much more intense.

In bringing the game to the PlayStation Vita, the biggest sacrifice made are the graphics, as they are

solid but not as detailed as the console version. There are also some framerate issues that hamper the experience, bringing about clipping issues with the visual style. Considering the platform, this was very much expected. However, there was a trade-off as Enemy Unknown Plus features all the content of the original game, including its expansion content, Enemy Within. Sound designs and control interfaces are also integrated well onto the platform. The biggest mechanic to keep intact and that was the gameplay, to which end, the game delivers on all fronts.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus is takes the legacy of its name onto a portable platform and makes for an engaging strategy game on the go.

Perhaps, as an unexpected reward, this makes the game, as well as the challenging turn-based strategy genre, much more accessible for those that were unsure of their own skill in such a game. Exciting, strategic, and challenging, XCOM Enemy Unknown Plus is a great game.

ith Father’s Day fast approaching, kids of all ages are pondering an annual question: what do I get for Dad? Ties are out, gift cards are a bit impersonal, but if the father in your life enjoys the game of golf, I’d suggest a selection from this threesome of books for the perfect gift.

“Tin Cup Dreams: A Long Shot Makes It on the PGA Tour”, by Michael D’Antonio In today’s game, golf protege’s usually follow two paths to the PGA Tour: A star-studded collegiate career or spending countless hours under the watchful eye of world-class instructors at corporately-owned sports academies.

Esteban Toledo’s path was neither and can best be summed up as the quintessential “road less travelled.”

The youngest of 11 children, Toledo grew up in unbelievable poverty in Mexicali, Mexico.

His boyhood home had dirt floors and no running water. In “Tin Cup Dreams: A Long Shot Makes It on the PGA Tour”, author Michael D’Antonio weaves a magical and uplifting story of a man who was determined to make something of his life.

From his childhood days when he fished balls out of pond at the Mexicali Country Club and sold them back to golfers, to a 16-1 record as a professional boxer, to teaching himself how to play golf and eventually winning more than $8 million in prize money, “Tin Cup Dreams” is a real-life fairy tale.

While D’Antonio has penned a book initially geared to golfers, the end result is a story non-golfers can thoroughly enjoy.

Toledo, who is now 54, competes on The PGA Champions Tour, for players over 50.

While he’s won a handful of tournaments, he was never one the game’s bright stars.

However, his determination and struggle to compete with the world’s best players is a wonderful story, one that will bring some tears, yet plenty of smiles and warm hearts to readers.

“Jenkins at the Majors : sixty years of the world’s best golf writing, from Hogan to Tiger”, by Dan Jenkins.

It is impossible to compile a threesome of books about golf without including at least one by arguably the best sports writer ever, Dan Jenkins. In “Sixty Years”, Jenkins details numerous breathtaking moments in golf. From Ben Hogan’s mastery of Oakland Hills in the

1951 U.S Open, when Hogan brought the monster to its knees with a sensational final round 67 to Tiger Woods’ thrilling -- and last -- major championship win in 2008, Jenkins’ wit, keen insight and glorious writing makes the reader feel as if they were witnessing each story in living color.

Jenkins’ career began in 1947 at his hometown newspaper, The Fort Worth Press. He would later go on to write for Sports Illustrated and Golf Digest. Many of the tales in this book are taken from his original reporting. In his early days, he covered two other Fort Worth natives, all-time greats Hogan and Byron Nelson. His relationship with the game’s greats, tournament officials, caddies and blue-collar grinders are brought to life via his artful prose. Other well-known Jenkins works include, “Semi-Tough” and “Dead Solid Perfect”, both of which I also highly recommend.

“The Eternal Summer: Palmer, Nicklaus, and Hogan in 1960, Golf’s Golden Year”, by Curt Sampson Author Curt Sampson brings to life the 1960 U.S. Open, a truly historic moment in golf. The tournament saw three of the game’s greats, representing three generations, battle for one of golf’s greatest championships. Sampson takes the reader through a magical maze, detailing how Arnold Palmer rallied from seven shots behind entering the final round to capture the second leg of golf’s Grand Slam.

You can literally walk in Ben Hogan’s shoes, as at age 47 he struggled to traverse Denver’s Cherry Hills Country Club track, due to life-altering injuries suffered in a car accident years prior. Palmer and 20 year-old Jack Nicklaus completed the threesome in one of the game’s most spectacular dramas. Palmer, the reigning king of golf, had already won The Masters that spring, while Nicklaus possessed a combination of power and skill never seen in golf.

Despite his injuries and his ever-balky putter, Hogan was tied for the lead with two holes to play. However, a bogey on 17, followed by a triple-bogey on 18 during the final round ended his title hopes. It would be the Texan’s last major hurrah.

Palmer’s 340-yard tee shot on the first hole landed on the green and he followed it up with a sensational 90-foot chip for birdie on the second. The three players battled back and forth during the final round, with Nicklaus grabbing the lead after nine, only to be done in by a couple of three putts on the back nine, finishing two shots behind Palmer.

Catching A Buzz With Hummingbirds B

y the end of May, all of the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the world will have reached their breeding grounds, completing a journey of over 500 miles to the eastern United States. And, when they get here, they are feather-pecking HUNGRY! This makes it the perfect season to bring out the feeders and attract these entertaining creatures to your yard. Hummingbirds remember their favorite breeding grounds, so once you get a crew happy with your area you can count on them returning year after year.

The early birds, usually the males, start to arrive in Atlantic County the last week in April. The females usually start the migration later in order to pack on as much weight as possible for the trip. Females often double their body weight before

the flight. They arrive at the Jersey shores throughout the month of May to start picking out nesting sites.

So, how do you start? Hummingbird feeders are available at most hardware stores and garden departments during the spring season, and always online. Although feeders come in various shapes and sizes, you will notice they consistently use the color red. Hummingbirds just can’t resist this color! If you want to tempt these aerial acrobats into your yard add dashes of red to your outdoor decor, switch to red plant pots, toss a few red pillows on your lawn furniture, or plant some nectar-rich red flowers this season. There are numerous flowers that you can plant to improve the hummingbird appeal of your property. The list includes: Bee Balm, Dianthus (red), Pineleaf Beardtongue, Lavender Salvia, and

With a heart beating at 1260 pumps per minute, these creatures crave high-energy food, especially after having travelled so far. Premixed feeder nectar is also available in stores and online, but you can easily make your own. All you need is a sack of regular granulated sugar to enjoy the sweetness and fun that these energetic birds have to offer. I use a simple recipe: 2 parts water to one part sugar.

Microwave 2 cups water in a pyrex measuring cup. This usually takes 3-4 mins. depending on your wattage. Pour slowly over 1 cup sugar in a heat resistant container. Stir frequently as you add the water to get all the sugar into solution.

A container like a large mason jar is perfect because the solution can be mixed in it, lidded, and put directly into the fridge once cooled.

Do not use hot sugar solution in your bird feeder, as it will melt some of them. By the time of their winter migration in late October, you will need the refills, because the birds often double their regular consumption rate. Yes, as winter approaches, these tiny birds (they weigh about the same as a penny) pack their bellies and their bags and head for Florida or east Texas, then continue to Mexico or Central America. But we know their hearts belong to Jersey, because the birds born here will return with the spring to set up housekeeping and rear their next generation on our shores.

West of the Mississippi 14 to 15 different species of hummingbirds are common. But east, well, there is only one dominant species of hummingbird, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. “Rubies” are aggressive and territorial with other birds and each other, which makes their athletic displays and antics great fun to observe around a feeder. Their wings flap at an average of 53 beats per second rotating in a figure-8 pattern. They can dive at 40 mph, fly backwards, upside-down, and hover more accurately than any helicopter I have seen.

I was “buzzed” for the first time last week by a female chirping and chittering for me to set up my feeder. The females are often mistaken for a different species because they have no distinguishing coloration and are typically larger than the males. They are a glossy, mossy green even on the brightest summer day. However, the species are named for the male’s coloration, not the female. Males have marvelous refractive feathers under their chins and around their necks that flash a rich ruby-red when the light strikes them. This is the characteristic that gives the group their name, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. And when you watch them at your feeder, you can tell they are true “Jersey Boys,” complete with black fedoras and red-silk scarves. Set up a feeder and catch their next act appearing in your backyard.

My Life Fell Apart

and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

few years ago things were going really badly for me.

So much so that I refer to that time as “when my life exploded.” What actually happened is not important but it was such an intense time of loss, grief, betrayal and stress that it leveled me. I found myself unable to hide my unhappiness and to my surprise that proved to be a great gift.

As a person who had always played it pretty close to the vest with my emotions, there was something unexpectedly freeing about being open about just how bad things were. When you keep your troubles to yourself, you unintentionally drive a wedge between you and the people in your life. And I needed the people in my life desperately.

So, for the first time in my life, when people asked me how I was doing, I told them, good or bad. If I

was sad, I said so. If I felt like crying, I did.

The beauty about being brought to your knees emotionally is that you gain a very clear view of those who lean in to lift you up, and so many people leaned in to me. Peo-

Safe Swimming and Surfing

ith summer coming up, I would like to talk about what the ideal ocean temperatures are for swimming and surfing. During the warm days that we often have in spring, it may be very tempting to go for a swim or ride some waves. While doing it for a few minutes is harmless, doing it for an extended period of time could cause potential problems if the water is cold.

According to the United States National Oceanographic Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the average ocean water temperature for Atlantic City during the final two weeks of May is 58 degrees.

After two hours of 60 degree Fahrenheit water, your risk of unconsciousness and death by drowning increases to 50 percent. If you decide to do water activities in water temperatures 46 degrees or below, the risk of hypothermia dramatically increases and once the water temperature drops to 32 degrees or lower, this can happen in a matter of minutes which could lead to a severe condition or death if not treated right away.

The ideal water temperature for swimming and surfing is between 70 and 78 degrees. Everybody has their own preference when it comes to whether

they like the water cold or whether they like it warm.

By June 1st through the 15th, the average ocean temperature jumps to 62 degrees, gradually increasing during July before peaking at 73 degrees during the last two weeks of August before starting to fall off as we head toward Autumn. There is not much difference in water temperature between Atlantic City and areas just to the south such as Ocean City, Margate, or Ventnor. Cape May does have some warmer waters as they are farther south.

Wind direction is very pivotal when it comes to ocean water temperature.

A wind coming from the Southeast usually brings warmer than normal ocean temperatures, as the wind direction is coming from the warm waters of the gulf stream. Southwest winds pushing warmer ocean water at the surface away from the shore and water from below comes up to replace it. This is known as upwelling. Winds coming from this direction generally bring colder ocean temperatures.

The ocean is great, doing activities in the water is great exercise, but please be careful with regards to the water temperature. Check your local news telecasts for daily water temperatures as they may fluctuate depending on the wind direction. Have fun and Happy Swimming & Surfing!

were deep and honest. Never in my life have a felt so cared for, so loved.

I had always worried that people would think less of me if they knew I had problems, if I opened up to them and asked for help. The complete opposite was true. So many wonderful people, family and friends, went out of their way to make sure I knew how valuable I was to them, and something incredible happened as a result. I began to see myself through their eyes. I realized that if all of these wonderful and amazing people love me, I must be pretty wonderful and amazing too. I began to believe how much I was truly loved, and more importantly, I began to love myself.

So while I hope your life never falls apart, I would tell you not to be too afraid. When you put it back together, it might be something more beautiful than you ever imagined it could have been.

nother school year passed, and, for some, a stage in life passed. High school seniors close a chapter and enter another as they move their cap tassels from right to left. From teenage years to adulthood. From high school to college.

College. The place where it all begins.

Career decisions, life-long friendships, and self-identity. Welcome to the start of your lives, graduates.

The journey here on is not easy.

Plans usually change, and so will you.

People part ways and you will most likely change your major…at least 3 times? Oh, and your body renews its preferences every 7 years. So, if you didn’t like coffee in high school, maybe now you do, considering that 4 years have passed since your last renewal and you’re borderline “I don’t like this” and “I like this.” Maybe you were all about fashion 4 years ago, and now you’re pursuing computer science instead.

But underneath these sorts of changes there is actually something amazing happening. You are finding you! You thought you found her or him a while back, but let me tell you, honey, no, you have not.

3 years ago, I was a senior in high school, ready as ever to be the world’s greatest artist. 3 short years later, I am an incoming senior in college, getting ready to be the world’s best travel documentary show host.

During those 36 months I have gained an insight into a life of science, a life of art, a life of business, and a life of communications. Although they are all interconnected, I have completely connected with a life of communications.

Being in college has helped me explore and find what I love. And along the way, I have met people of the same goals, and they are now the friends that I want to keep, long-time.

I have learned that this college stage in life isn’t about “I’m in college,” it is truly about college being in your life. Use it.

Use college to your full potential. It is not about you doing your best in college. No. It is about having the best experiences in college. Because being in college means becoming a better you, so let only the best transform you.

And while on this tough journey, remember to see the bigger picture: the picture of the best you at the end of it all. Good luck and enjoy!

This annual tradition awakens the entire neighborhood from a winter slumber and brings families out onto Asbury Avenue. Whether you live in Ocean City, have a second home, vacation on the island every year, or simply love visiting from near and far, the block party is the best way to get excited about the spring and summer season. This year, as in years past, 6th to 14th Street, Asbury Avenue transformed into a walkway lined with tents, booths, and vendors. There were tons of food, shopping, and fun for everyone. Some 50,000 people made it a party to remember!

egetable gardens are trendy, fun, and rewarding. They also provide the cheapest way to obtain healthy, organic vegetables. You have probably thought about starting your own vegetable garden and we encourage you to go for it! It is a rewarding job and you will enjoy your first harvest in a very short time.

Here are some tips to help you get a bountiful harvest:

1. Choose what to grow wisely

If you are a beginner, it is best to choose vegetables that are easy to grow. Some great choices are lettuce, tomato, sugar snap peas, beans, summer squash, and herbs such as basil and thyme. It is wise to start small.

This means planting just as much as you need. You don’t want to end up feeling overwhelmed or burdened by your garden. Think about what your family eats. Also, keep in mind that some veggies keep providing throughout the whole season while others produce only once. Start with a plan.

2. Choose your Space

Location matters! It should have enough sunlight, be near a water source, and be protected from wind.

When you have chosen the perfect location you should decide how to make the most of the space you have.

Again, go small; you don’t need much space to begin with. In fact, you can even grow vegetables in containers on your deck or balcony. If you tend your garden well, it will produce more.

It is simple. A large garden requires much more time to be maintained. If you are an experienced gardener and have enough time to take care of a large garden, go for it. But if you are too busy to spend a lot of time in your garden, or are a beginner, go smaller.

Raised beds are also a good choice.

3. Design and Layout

There are two ways to plant the layout of your garden. The first is traditional row planting. It is the

most common vegetable garden layout – you simply place plants single file in rows, with a walking path between each row. Although row cropping sounds logical and easy, this approach is suitable for large vegetable gardens only. Intensive cropping reduces the space needed for a vegetable garden. It involves using wide bands. By dividing the garden into small beds, you will be able to mix different kinds of vegetables even if your garden is small.

Both raised beds or open beds will allow you to downsize the garden.

There are many reasons for choosing an intensive garden system over rows, such as reducing the required effort and decreasing the demand for soil.

7. Taking Care of Your Garden

The most important part of caring for your veggie garden is the watering. Provide about an inch of water per week (or less if there is enough rain). Make sure to minimize weeds by stirring the top inch of soil regularly to discourage their seedlings. With larger plants, mulch, plastic, and compost can help keep weeds at bay. Fertilizer is necessary

for a rich harvest. Use high quality compost or packaged vegetable fertilizer. Don’t overdo it. Too much fertilizer can have a negative effect on your crop.

8. How To Harvest

Harvesting is what it’s all about!

Harvesting is done in several stages, depending on the vegetable variety.

It is best to take a basket and collect everything that is ripened on a daily basis. On-time harvesting will make your veggies produce more. Some vegetables are better to be harvested while they are still small. Zucchini are an example – when they are longer than 7 inches they become tough and woody. Check the seed packet to know what to expect of each crop.

4. Move The Crops

Use the three-year crop rotation rule, which means planting the same crop in the same place only once every three years. This way you ensure that the same garden vegetables will not deplete the same nutrients year after year.

5. Prepare the Soil

If your garden hasn’t been planted before, your vegetables will do great the first year, but in the next one, you will have to prepare the soil for good results. Simply add some organic matter to the soil. Test the soil before planting. Determine the pH of the soil by using a soil test kit. Acidic soils, or soils with low pH, can be sweetened by adding lime, while alkaline soils with high pH need gardener’s sulfur and rich organic matter. They should also be mulched with acidic materials such as pine needles and forest duff. Also check soil drainage. You can do this by soaking the soil with a hose, waiting a day, then digging up a handful of soil. Squeeze the soil hard.

If water streams out, you’ll probably want to add compost or organic matter to improve drainage.

Spring Into Action Bring Your Own Bag!

idding winter goodbye and heading out into the spring sunshine can be one of the most pleasant feelings in the world. Trees and flowers have begun to bloom, outdoor sports are in full swing and the plastic bags are in the height of their nesting season.

“Huh?” you ask. “What do you mean plastic bags?” Well, take a minute to count how many plastic bags you see in trees or on the roadside on your next local drive. You will probably get up to 10 or 15 before you stop counting in disappointment. That’s more bags than you will see birds nesting or members of the local wildlife community on that same drive.

When did this all begin? Plastic sandwich bags were first introduced in 1957. Department stores began using plastic bags in the 1970s and

supermarket chains introduced them in the early 1980s. It now takes approximately 12 million barrels of oil to produce the 100 billion plastic bags Americans use each year.

Plastic bags can be hazardous to whales, seals, turtles, seabirds and other marine animals as they are mistaken for food by these creatures.

Nowadays the average American family brings home 1500 plastic bags per year. Many people reuse their plastic bags for other trash or dog waste but it can be a challenge to reuse that many bags!

They are not able to go into your curbside recycling bins but fortu-

nately recycling options are available at most chain grocery stores. Right now less than 20% of plastic bags get recycled, though. That is why they are still a large part of the litter on our streets and in our waters.

Here in Atlantic Count y, ma ny towns have programs to educate residents about reusable bags. The Township of Hamilton provides their local merchants with a limited amount of reusable bags to distribute to their customers and hands them out at community events. Galloway Township does the same and presents reusable bag PSAs in their local grocery store.

Last year Longport became the first New Jersey town to regulate plastic bag use, requiring a fee to be charged by retailers offering plastic bags. The fee is kept by the retailer and offsets their costs to provide the bags. Nationwide, larger cities are now jumping in on the action, New York City, Chicago and San Francisco are notable participants in either a bag ban or fee requirement.

There are great reasons to bring your own bags. They are sturdy, carrying heavier items with ease, and usually they are easy to find for free at local community events. Keep them in your vehicle so you don’t forget them on your way to the market.

Keep a small one handy for the convenience store or just refuse a bag for purchases you can carry on your own.

If everyone plays a small part, maybe we’ll see more bird’s nests than bags in the trees next Spring.
