Independence Day at the Shore

I

Many view the fireworks displays from the other side of the bay. Kennedy park in Somers Point and Faunce Landing in Absecon are just two of some favorite spots that offer multiple vantage points .

You could look one way and see Atlantic City’s fireworks and turn your head north to enjoy Margate and Ocean City's shows.

n a time when Americans are so politically divided, we push that aside and agree that regardless of our views on particular issues, we are proud and grateful to be Americans.

The freedom to speak and share our differing views is something to be celebrated. Our forefathers sacrificed and fought to establish that freedom along with many others as they carefully drafted it in the Declaration of Independence, in 1776.

The Fourth of July here, at the shore, is one of my favorite holidays.

There is something nearly magical about all the sights and sounds of the sand and surf, coupled with the crowds on the boardwalk.

The red, white and blue flags swaying, attached to bikes and surreys and children waving them

proudly. The sights and smell of funnel cake, pizza, fries, fudge and ice cream abound. Even the sound of the dreaded seagulls is music to my ears.

At night, the boardwalk lights up.

The ferris wheel, rollercoaster and all the rides, arcades, and mini golf offer so many fun things to do.

The dark beaches fill with blankets and lawn chairs and the sky lights up with fireworks. Nearly every island offers a show. On the mainland, there are multiple shows as well.

know lots of people are anticipating the arrival of sustainable, summer-like weather, right? Well... look no further! We finally have some coming our way by late week.

We've absolutely been stuck in a rut in terms of cool, unsettled, and more often than not, cloudy and grey weather. We shift things in a much more positive direction as high pressure, that had set up shop in the west and midwest, expands eastward. Now, I'm not talking a day or two of above normal temps; I think it will be a week or more where the entire northeast and mid-atlantic sizzles.

Our pattern will become hotter and stickier, point-blank. Dew points will rise, so it will feel uncomfortable at times. If you're looking for summer weather for the 4th of July, It looks like Mom Nature will deliver, so that's fantastic news. In terms of rain? Don't see a whole lot of it outside of typical summertime thunderstorms here and there. The tropics look great right now. Lots of dust coming off the west coast of Africa means development of cyclones is inhibited.

Certainly nothing to worry about anytime soon. Enjoy!

Hometown Hero: Jenny Robertson

L

ocal hometown hero, Jenny Robertson, is a voice to the voiceless, help to the helpless, and a giving and loving heart to everyone she meets. Our hometown heroes are people who are making a difference in the community every single day. Jenny is one of those great Atlantic County heroes.

Born and raised in the South Jersey area, Jenny is a Stockton University graduate with a BA in psychology. She went on to continue her education at Monmouth University, and graduated with an MS in Psychological and Mental Health Counseling. The education she received is only coupled with the huge heart that she has for people, especially women and children.

At a young age, Jenny witnessed drug and alcohol abuse in her immediate family. For many years, she witnessed domestic abuse in her home

as she was growing up. The things that could have broken her down, built her up. Now, as a 30 year old, wife-to-be, she uses her experiences and education to speak up for those who go unheard.

In her day job, Jenny is a trauma certified therapist. She works with Beautiful Minds, TC where she serves children aged 4-18. She offers inhome therapy for children and families all throughout New Jersey. In addition, she works in a psychiatric community home for children ages 6-12, where she provides intensive trauma based therapy for children who, unfortunately, can not be managed in the home.

Outside of work, Jenny volunteers her time to matters close to her heart. She sits on the board for Closet of Hope in Atlantic City. The Closet of Hope is an organization designed to be a boutique-style closet that offers professional clothing, classes, and resources in the community that will help them to not only land a job, but to assist in helping them maintain their jobs. The program is based on love and kindness, and helping one another to succeed in life, and in the workplace. The group is made up of

motivated community leaders, and is in the beginning stages with much anticipation of what’s to come.

Jenny is a committee member of the Britni Zarin Scholarship Fund,

a fund created for dancers that are developmentally delayed and economically in need. The scholarship fund raises money to help these dancers pursue their dreams and become what they were created to be.

Jenny and the rest of the Britni Zarin committee are currently planning a “Dance a Mile” fundraiser.

Similar to a walk or a run fundraiser, the event will raise money for the foundation. However this time, instead of walking - they dance.

Jenny is trained to be a volunteer at The Women’s Center, and participates in local events to raise money and awareness for women and children in need. Jenny and her mother began a Christmas collection last year in which they helped thirty children, that are cared for under Department of Children and Family Services, receive Christmas presents. This year they are repeating their mission but with the goal of helping at least fifty kids have the Christmas that they deserve.

Jenny also volunteers with the Spread the Love Foundation, which gives back to kids and helps spread awareness surrounding mental health.

In addition to all of this, Jenny is in the process of developing a program that will help support children who have parents in addiction or recovery programs. The program will help them to identify their resources, and provide consistency in support to

help those children thrive in life.

We asked Jenny what inspires her to be so involved with those who have gone through trauma in their lives. She shared, “I was always very vocal in telling adults who would listen about what was going on in my home and luckily, I had family who listened, but professionals who did not. I wanted to be that voice for someone reaching out and needing a trustworthy adult. Those experiences shaped me and changed me for the better. I always thought I could show kids who have a struggling home setting that they can achieve your goals and dreams and that they could be someone. We focus on the adult getting help, and forget sometimes about the child at home struggling to understand. I am able to be the voice for that child and to let them know that they’re heard. I can empathize and validate their feelings. They matter too, and they need to know that.”

With so much going on in her professional and community involvement, it’s important for Jenny that she also makes time to disconnect.

She gives credit to her graduate program at Monmouth University for the focus on self care, and knowing when enough is enough. She prides herself on the ability to emotionally walk away, turn her brain “off” and spend time with her fiance and their dog. It’s important to her that in her quest to serve others, she always takes care of herself as well. Jenny is a hometown hero.

4 Reasons I am Excited About The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City took. Now, Elvis’ Rolls Royce has made its final stop, and home, at the porte cochere entrance of The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City.

3. The Howie Mandel Comedy Club - I have followed Mr. Mandel since St. Elsewhere and the balloon on the head gag.

Over the years, I have watched him grow and evolve. None of that has anything to do with The Howie Mandel Comedy Club.

I am always excited to see live comedy. At best, we will see a future superstar at the beginning of an amazing career. At worst, we’ll enjoy a night out with friends and laughs. This is what a no-lose scenario looks like.

At a charity event I had, she sang Bless The Broken Road, and from that day, I have been a fan of Rascal Flatts music. I always love finding music that was hidden to me. Since that time, I have loved their approach to harmony, song writing, and country music. I am not ashamed to say, I hope they find a way to work in at least a few bars of their acapella rendition of I’ll Be Home For Christmas.

The Sindia: Ocean City’s Famous Shipwreck

O

cean City has a rich and unique history. Take a walk downtown or down a residential street, and you may notice something remarkable. But there’s one piece of history that has been buried in the sands forever.

Lying underneath the 16th street beach are the remnants of a four-masted ship known as the Sindia.

329 feet in length, it was built in Belfast, Ireland in 1887, and purchased by an oil company owned by John D. Rockefeller. Prior to its grounding, the Sindia made its final voyage to Shanghai where it unloaded oil, wax, and kerosene.

On December 15, 1901, a raging nor’easter brought blinding rain and wind off our coast, causing the Sindia to run aground 300 yards off of the 16th street beach. Members of the Lifesaving Service made the discovery

“Sindia Oil.” For years, the site of the wreck was a tourist destination.

Beachgoers and visitors from across the eastern seaboard would travel to Ocean City to catch a glimpse of the vessel.

Up until 1960, most of the wreckage was visible. Beach replenishments and nor’easters would eventually bury the remainder of the ship and its contents.

Only the masts would remain visible until the late 1980s when the Sindia disappeared. The site was dedicated as a historic landmark by the Department of the Interior.

The story of the Sindia can be read by all. A memorial plaque now stands a block away from where she ran aground.

Today, several remnants of the Sindia can be found at the Ocean City Historical Museum. There, guests can discover the history of its travels, photos, and long-told stories from witnesses and survivors. During your visit, be sure to check out all of the exhibits that showcase the life and history of our shore community. The museum is located in the Ocean City Community

She was finishing the final leg of a journey from Kobe, Japan to New York City, carrying exported silk, oil screens, and porcelain. Legend has it that the ship was also carrying items looted out of Buddhist temples during Shanghai’s Boxer Rebellion.

Various attempts were made to salvage the ship and return it to the ocean; tugboats led the effort to no avail. The Sindia sat off the coast untouched. Divers were left to recover the oil, and sell it to soap companies under the name

To date, many tales have been told about shipwrecks that have taken place. Over 4,000 ships have run aground off of the New Jersey coast, but none has ever lived up to the tale about the Sindia.

New Donut Lover’s Paradise in Ocean City

id you hear the news? Aunt Betty and Uncle Bill’s family has expanded with the new addition of Nauti Donuts.

Ocean City is a family resort, so it only makes sense that two of the most well known family-owned restaurants in Ocean City would branch off to create yet another beloved eatery. Chris O’Hara, whose family owns Aunt Betty’s Ice Cream Shack and Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, opened Nauti Donuts earlier this month along with his wife Gabby, and it’s the perfect spot for when your sweet tooth is calling.

Located at 2133 Asbury Avenue in Ocean City, Nauti Donuts is a donut-lovers paradise. They churn out freshly made hot vanilla cake donuts to which you can then add the coating, topping and drizzle of your choice. Coatings include familiar favorites like chocolate,

vanilla, powdered sugar,, and cinnamon sugar.

Toppings are similar to what you would find in an ice cream shop like jimmies (I love that they refer to them as their true name), oreo crumbles, m&m’s, bacon, and pork roll. Wait, back up a second. Yes, you read that right. You can top your donut with bacon or pork roll. Personally, that isn’t my thing. but if you are sweet and savory donut lover, your prayers have been answered! If that wasn’t enough you can finish your donut with a drizzle of salted caramel or hot fudge. Hungry yet?

I took my twins to check out Nauti Donuts as a treat on their last day of first grade. My son chose maple drizzle and fruity pebbles (no judgments, it was the last day of school), while my daughter chose strawberry glaze with oreo crumbles. They both let their mom try a bite and I can assure you that both donuts were absolutely delicious. I had a chance to chat with Chris and Gabby who are so excited about their new venture, and couldn’t be nicer.

Tips for Taking Good Beach Pictures

W

hen I scroll through Facebook at this time of year, I love seeing everyone’s family beach portraits. Parents are color coordinated with their kids, everyone is smiling and all looks perfect.

It takes a lot of work to get the perfect picture. We first took family beach portraits with my twins when they were one and I remember that it was not easy. I sat down recently with my photography teacher, Sherry McCracken, co-owner of Little Rock Films & Studios in Ventnor and she shared some great tips for having a successful photo shoot.

While the beach is a very popular location for pictures this time of year, there are plenty of other good spots for taking pictures. The boardwalk provides a great backdrop for family pictures. My family really enjoys the outdoors so I prefer locations that are where we choose to spend our free time like the Egg Harbor Township Nature Reserve or Batsto Village. There is a great old, rustic barn at Batsto where we got great pictures a few years ago.

Since taking photography classes with Sherry I have become very comfortable with using my DSLR and will now be taking my own pictures!

That leads to a question I had, how should people dress for family pictures? It used to be that everyone dressed the same in khaki bottoms and white shirts. I asked Sherry if that was necessary for getting good pictures and she said absolutely not!

Sherry’s first recommendation is to make sure you plan around when your children will be at their best (if that is possible). If they take an afternoon nap, schedule your session for the morning or late afternoon. You want to try to avoid tired kids. Also make sure they are well-fed. Nothing is fun or enjoyable when you are hungry so make sure everyone’s tummies are filled.

Location is a very important consideration as well. Kids should be stimulated by their surroundings, but not overstimulated. For certain shots you will want the kids looking at the camera, not at all of the action happening on the beach. Sherry also recommends bringing some new toys that will catch the attention of kids that you can hold near where you want them to look. The beach can be wide open space so if you want pictures with seagrass, dunes or a pier, you will want to choose a location based on that. Many kids are naturally drawn to water and will inevitably get wet. If they do get wet, you want to have a change of clothes.

here is no doubt the level of excitement surrounding Stockton University’s new campus opening this fall in Atlantic City, N.J. Stockton has been a part of Atlantic City since the first classes were offered in 1971 at the Mayflower Hotel at Tennessee Avenue and the Boardwalk.

The new campus adds to the existing three facilities Stockton currently operates in Atlantic City - the Carnegie Center, Dante Hall Theater and the Noyes Arts Garage - where we are involved in the Atlantic City community and remain committed to the growth and development of the community.

This fall we will offer over 100 courses in Atlantic City ranging from Anthropology to Sociology and everything in between.

Of course, Hospitality & Tourism Management Studies (HTMS) courses will be offered in Atlantic City with nine courses this fall. The HTMS program is working on a strategic plan that includes ideas to

capitalize on the unique resort location and take advantage of the “living, learning, earning” opportunities that our students can benefit from in Atlantic City.

We are creating professional development opportunities for hospitality industry professionals (and those interested in personal enrichment) to enhance their knowledge and skills in their own “backyard.”

We are creating unique learning opportunities that include industry credentials to give our students the added value in the competitive hospitality industry

landscape. We will continue to work closely with our Career Center, Advisory Board and Internship Employers to stay connected to the relevant and dynamic issues that are critical to the viability of the HTMS Program.

Our faculty and staff are a highly educated, diverse team who contribute to the teaching, research and service foundations that are core to our educational mission at Stockton.

Two full-time faculty will have offices in Atlantic City. The HTMS curriculum includes the basics of hotel operations and food and beverage management, but our students also study destination management, special events management, gaming industry management and more.

We have a required Internship Program that uniquely ties theory to practice as students work in a supervisory capacity and connect their shared experiences in an online course. We have a dedicated Internship Coordinator who works with students on job placement and preparedness. We have a faculty

led study tour elective that educates and prepares students to travel to destinations that have included Rome and Florence in Italy and Crete in Greece.

Our two student organizations, the Hospitality Society and Stockton Event Planners are active, engaged students who organize industry guest speakers, trips to the N.Y. Hotel Show, hotel tours, dining experiences and more to enhance their learning of the industry and provide networking with industry professionals.

Stockton’s HTMS program looks forward to a prominent presence in Atlantic City with our colleagues from the Organizational Leadership, the Social work, business studies and more. The Shady Gardener

Many shade lovers are known, not for their flowers, but for their leaves.

Coleus have a stunning array of colors to choose from. Some are chartreuse, burgundy, and dark purple all on one leaf. They will produce a stem of small purple flowers, but these take a back seat compared to their dramatic leaves.

any of us have a “sun-challenged” spot in our garden. When you read the tag of that big, beautiful flower it says, “requires full sun”. But don’t despair, you aren’t doomed to a boring, colorless plot. Embrace your shady side. Most shady sections of the garden still receive dappled light where the sun peeks through the branches.

This opens a new world of opportunity to grow things that wouldn’t survive in the hot sun. Also, keep in mind that, in the early spring, deciduous trees haven’t grown their leaves quite yet.

For a short time, the area underneath those trees will receive a lot more sun than later in the season. This gives you a great spot to plant early-blooming flower bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and grape hyacinths. As the leaves fill in, it will turn to the dappled light that many plants enjoy.

I had a shady corner in my yard. When I walked around my house, it looked terrible. Eventually, I added a row of hydrangeas.

Later I added ferns, and lined the walkway with hostas. Now it is one of my favorite spots. In the heat of the day, you round the corner to a canopy from the trees, and curve around to the pathway lined with ferns and hostas. You instantly feel the cool relief from a hot summer day and sense a peaceful calm before bursting into the scene of the sunfilled garden. Impatiens help lead the way and provide just the right pop of color to break up the greenery.

Caladium also have impressive foliage, with heart-shaped leaves in shades of green, white, and pink which will really brighten a dark corner. Coral Bells (Heuchera) have leaves in an amazing array of shapes and colors—from lime green and peach to red and purple—with tall stems topped with delicate flowers.

But we all love flowers. If you have a shady garden, consider yourself lucky. You can grow beautiful perennial flowers that require a respite from the direct sun, and will reward your hospitality by returning each year. Bleeding heart (Dicentra) have wonderful flowers shaped like little pink and white hearts on an arching stem. Variegated Solomon’s Seal also have an arching stem and graceful, white fragrant bells. Lily of the Valley is very similar. It has little white bells that smell amazing. Every May, I cut some to display in my antique flower of the month teacup given to me by my aunt, who shares my birth month. Don’t leave out Astilbe. These plants have fern-like leaves and look very neat for that alone. But then they send up wonderful plumes of feathery pink, white, or red flower spikes. Group a few together for an impressive impact. Treat yourself to a real beauty of the garden – Hellebore.

Don’t let this strange sounding name fool you; it is a gem of the garden.

Also known as Lenten Rose, it blooms near the beginning of Lent. Though it is not in the rose family, the name gives you a hint of its beauty. I first

learned of this plant from seeing it in my friend’s garden, and was so grateful when my mom surprised me with one for my own garden. It’s always a welcome sight to see it emerge after the winter blahs.

For instant gratification, plant shade-loving annuals. My go-to has always been a flat or two (or three) of impatiens. They come in many colors to suit your tastes. New Guinea impatiens are also full of color, but are not subject to downy mildew that plagued many gardens years ago. Plant double impatiens which will look like mini roses blooming in the shade. In a partially shaded garden, hang a basket of fuchsia. It’s amazing that such vibrant colors can grow without full sun, and it’s just the touch of exotic that you want in your summer garden. Another annual that has recently caught my eye is begonia.

Actually, I have always hated waxed begonias, but lately, I’ve noticed beautiful specimens at my local nurseries. Further inquiry revealed that these are Hiemalis begonias, also known as Rieger begonias, a cross between a wax begonia and tuberous begonia. Grown in partial shade or filtered light, they produce very showy vibrant flowers of yellow, orange, red, and pink. The double varieties are especially nice. I think I’ve become a believer.

Place a comfortable bench in your shade garden where you can sit and relax. Just like your flowers, you can enjoy a break from the heat of summer, and reflect on the peace and calm a shade garden provide.

Changing weather can af fec t canines much like it does people, but dogs may also be af fected in ways their owners are not . According to the Societ y for the Prevention of Cruelt y to An ima ls , d o g s c a n fe el cha n ge s in barometric pressure and even in the static electric f ield that occurs in t h e a ir. T h e American Animal Hospital Association s ays dogs’ be havioral changes may be at tributable to changes in the weather. Dogs may become a gitated or overexcited by dips in barometric pressure. A s elec trical storms approach, some dogs may get ver y anxious, even running and hiding if their anxiet y is espe cially high.

Many dogs are afraid of thunder and lightning and can sense approaching storms even when

they are still miles away. According to researchers at Penn State University, between 15 and 30 percent of all dogs are extremely scared of thunder and may experience a rapid increase of cortisol, a stress hormone.

Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of chemicals common during some storms . Dogs can smell ozone in the air associated with lightning as well.

Dogs may be physically affected by weat her jus t like their owners are. Although there is little scientif ic work specifically on the af fect s of cold or damp weather on dogs that occurs during autumn and early winter, it does seem that canines feel the ef fec t s of these changes. Owners of te n n ot i ce m o re s t i f fn e s s and lameness in pets during adverse weather conditions. Pain resulting from ar thritis may increase and muscles may stiffen when the climate becomes cooler.

When “Love All, Serve All” Comes to Town

hen Hard Rock Café first came to Atlantic City I was fortunate to be there. It was a great time to be in Atlantic City, with lots of excitement and, thanks to Hard Rock Café, a connection to a place and vibe I could relate to… music.

Back in the mid-eighties I had the chance to visit the original Hard Rock Café location in New York City multiple times. Even as a high school student, I recognized the success of combining music, food, and retail merchandise. After the New York visit, I made it a goal to visit a Hard Rock Café in every city I visited that had one. While they are similar in their offering of food, along with general and customized retail items, the one uniqueness of each location is that they embrace and display the regional music scene. Each Hard Rock Café honors musical artists that hail from, or call the towns and cities from that region, their home.

Which brings me to Hard Rock Atlantic City bringing their motto of “Love All – Serve All” to town. If you are familiar with the band U2 or the late, great, amazing bluesman, B.B. King, then you may also be familiar with the song “When Loves Come To Town”, that inspired this column.

So what happens when an organization whose motto is “Love All- Serve All” comes to town? First off, it brings the following company-wide values with it:

50 Is The New 50

I

turned 50 years old this year. That's half a century of being alive. In some cultures, and earlier in the history of our own United States, that's an accomplishment. I don't understand how people can say that 50 is middle-aged. According to that theory, most people will live to be 100. That isn't happening. The primary thing that resonated with me when I turned 50 was the fact that I'll be dead soon.

About a week before I hit the big 5-0, I had a doctor’s appointment. My doctor looked at my chart and said, “Happy Birthday!

You're going to be 50.” To which I replied, "50 is tough." As usual, my doctor was right. I was immediately faced with psychological challenges and physical realizations that more than half of my life was over.

It’s time. I need to start acting like an adult. A 50-year-old adult. Every single decision I made that week was presented by me asking myself: Would a 50-year-old man do this? Most of the answers I found were, “no.”

Turning 50 also illuminated a big

problem that I have with the way people behave. My biggest challenge is when I see people acting in a boorish manner. And these boors are people who are older than me. The concern

I have for people younger than me acting badly is not nearly as bothersome as people older than me acting badly. That I cannot tolerate.

I was at a Steely Dan concert a few years ago. There were two things that stuck out about that night that I listened to songs from the albums Gaucho and Aja. Number one: I was one of the few people there younger than age 50.

Number two: I was one of the only people there who wasn't smoking marijuana. It seemed odd to me.

Not only was I not getting high, but I was clearly the youngest person in attendance. I felt very out of place.

Was I the Square, or was this what I had to look forward to when I turn 50. Smoking pot openly in public, and listening to blue-eyed soul concerts? Now that I'm 50 years old, and I look back, I don't think I was the Square. I think I was surrounded by a bunch of 50-year-old men and women who just didn't care. And not caring anymore is one part about being 50 that hasn't sunk in yet. Will it? Will I one day stop caring?

Or will I always care about not caring?

The question looms large.

The Layers of Local History

The Most Historic Town In Atlantic County

L

ong before Atlantic City was initially founded in 1854, prior to the carving out of Atlantic County from Gloucester County in February of 1837, what would become the city of Somers Point was first populated in the 1690s. In 1694 the first ferry was established between Beesley’s Point, in Cape May County, which had been settled even earlier, and what would become Somers Point. The next year, John Somers, a Quaker, purchased 3,000 acres of property from the same English speculator whose lands were later bought by the founders of Scullville, in Egg Harbor Township, and Conovertown in Galloway. In 1720 Somers’ son, Richard, began work on the Somers Mansion, Atlantic County’s first building, which, in the nineteenth century, had additions made which gave it more of a Victorian style, complete with wrap around porches. The building was restored to its original Flemish Bond brick form by the The Works Progress Administration in the 1940s, and is now being supported by the new non-profit group, Patriots for the Somers Mansion.

In 1737, Judith Somers, Richard’s wife, gave birth to a son named for his

father, who would serve as a Colonel in charge of the Third Battalion of the Gloucester County Militia, in the American Revolution. The Colonel is buried, along with his wife, Sophia, at one of multiple Somers Family plots throughout the community, this one located on the highest point in town, which today sits next to the New York Avenue School building.

Colonel Richard Somers’ son, likely the town’s most famous resident, is also honored with a monument on the grounds, though he was buried half a world away. U.S. Navy Commandant Richard Somers, was born in 1778 at site of the tavern his father had founded eight years earlier, on the corner of Shore Road and Bethel Road, and attended school in Philadelphia, before sailing to the Mediterranean in 1804. Although he engaged in numerous naval actions, including the rescue of three hundred sailors that had been captured by Barbary Pirates, Somers is most recalled for the way he died.

a captured pirate ship that some sources say was rechristened again as the U.S.S. Inferno before battle, Somers perished while en-route to Tripoli harbor, after having converted his vessel into a fire ship rigged to explode adjacent to enemy boats.

Somers and twelve of his crew were buried at a Protestant Cemetery in Libya, though efforts are ongoing to find a diplomatic way to bring their bodies back to the United States.

Somers himself is widely remembered throughout the nation with at least six naval warships named in his honor, dating back to the 1840s, and a marker at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, founded that same decade. In the town that was named for his great-grandfather, he now has a bust, dedicated in 2013, sitting next to a mural describing his life (and death) painted just two years later.

This mural sits on the wall of an addition created after the old City Hall, built in 1906, was converted into the town library. This allowed the old church, built in 1886, that had been

serving as the community’s library to become the Somers Point Historical Museum, only a few blocks away from the Atlantic County Historical Society‘s museum that was founded in 1913.

The old City Hall site and the two museums sit just across Shore Road from the Bayfront Historic District, which was established in 1989 on the National Register of Historic Places, following community frustration at the destruction of one of the town’s iconic houses the year before, to create a parking lot. This area of town is home to numerous homes and businesses constructed from the 1880s through the 1920s; a range of once popular architectural styles from bungalows to Queen Anne Victorians, as well as a monument to locals who defended the community in the War of 1812, which was constructed in 1923. Local Scouts Raise Money for Pediatric Care at Shore Medical Center

o a good turn daily” is a core precept of the Boy Scouts of America, and something that three young members of the Linwood Cub Scouts Pack 39 Wolf Den have certainly embraced.

After several months of fundraising, scouts William Gerhardt, Grant Miller, and Theodore Coville presented Shore

Medical Center officials with a donation of $175.80 on June 11 to benefit its Pediatric Care Unit, Shore’s separate child-friendly emergency and inpatient area designed especially for children to help make the hospital experience less scary. The Pediatric Unit is staffed 24/7 by pediatric specialists from St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Onsite Neonatal Partners.

Cheat to Win, Then Get Back On

’m so sick of eating chicken!

I hear this everyday in my practice. Some days, eating just enough chicken, rice, and vegetables to function is fine. Other days, the overwhelming need to eat an entire pizza pie is almost too much to handle. Thankfully, any diet can handle motivation-saving cheat meals. A free meal that allows you to indulge in whatever your heart (and taste buds) desire may seem too good to be true, but cheat meals are actually essential for a healthy diet. Having said that, there’s a right way to have a cheat meal that will aid in weight loss, and there’s a wrong way that could end up hindering your overall weight loss goal.

First thing's first: It’s a cheat meal, not a cheat day. Cheat meals should be a part of your diet, but cheat days will ruin your diet. Any diet should adhere to the 90/10 rule, meaning 90 percent of the diet should be focused solely on healthy food, while the remaining 10 percent can be devoted to cheat meals. For example, if you’re looking to follow a dieting plan that allows five smaller meals throughout the day, then you will be consuming 35 meals a week. By following the 90/10 rule, three to four meals a week can be devoted to indulging your sweet tooth.

Cheat days serve a couple of purposes. First, it is important to clarify that a cheat day is most successful when a single meal that day is regarded as the cheat. If you allow all of your hard work to unravel for an entire day, you can quickly void the progress you have been making all week, especially if weight loss is a goal.

That coveted cheat meal that you’ve been powering through cups of vegetables and chicken breasts for is more than loading up on junk food. Psychologically, it’s about making your diet seem more feasible. Even the most chiseled gym rat would lose their mind sticking to a strict diet over the course of 12 weeks. Let’s say Monday through Saturday are healthy eating days and Sunday is the day for your cheat meal. Sticking to your diet six days

out of the week seems a lot more attainable with some scoops of Ben & Jerry’s waiting at the end.

Remember, there is a psychological component to the cheat day.

Without rewards, it can become mundane to keep a healthy lifestyle day in and day out. Oftentimes, it may take several weeks to see the scale budge, so knowing that a cheat day is coming can help keep up motivation. There’s also a scientific approach to why we need an occasional cheat meal. It all starts with leptin, a protein produced by fat tissue that helps regulate body weight and fat mass, by impacting appetite and the body’s energy balance.

Constant dieting will eventually lead to caloric deficits, which causes our energy levels to plummet. A calorie bomb provided by your cheat meal will help the body maintain energy levels needed to continue dieting and exercising.

While your goal should be to fully satisfy your junk food desires, cheat meals still require some form moderation and compromise. Remember, your body still needs the three essential macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fat, for energy and to build muscle. That means, stay on program for the most part!

Think of your cheat meal as a time for you to enjoy “bad” protein, carbs, and fat. For some people that means switching from grilled to fried chicken for one meal out of the week, or complex carbs to simple carbs. Also, consider saving your cheat meal for post-workout when the body is ready to make use of every macro, “good” or “bad.”

Here is one more way that your cheat meal can be used: there are significant weight loss benefits in changing your calories intake for a couple days in a row. For example, keeping a 1,400 per day calorie diet for four consecutive days and adding on 200-300 calories for the remaining three days can aid in success. By occasionally boosting your caloric intake, you encourage your body to burn calories more rapidly instead of allowing it to adjust completely to the lower calorie lifestyle. Light of Asia Lucy’s Forgotten Relative

M

ost fans of the Jersey Shore know of Lucy the elephant in Margate but very few know that she once had a cousin located a bit further south in Cape May. Known as the "Light of Asia" or Old Dumbo by the locals, she was designed by Philadelphia architect N.H. Culver and was built for land speculator Theodore M. Reger. The men were no doubt influenced by James V. Lafferty, designer of Lucy in 1881 and “Elephantine Colossus” built in Coney Island in 1882.

Completed in 1884,its owner ran ads in the local paper soliciting tenants for his colossal pachyderm. “Parties wishing rooms in the elephant to sell soda water, fancy articles, advertising, etc. and the privilege for bathhouses, ice cream garden and dairy. Apply on the premises or to T.M. Reger, 508 Walnut Street, Philadelphia."

The elephant stood forty feet, ten inches tall and a "howdah" or covered pavilion rested upon the giant's back.

The hind legs were equipped with spiral stairs that provided access to the interior of the elephant. It was estimated that over one million pieces of wood were required to construct the elephant. It was covered with a skin consisting of over 13,000 square feet of tin.Two sets of stairs on either side of the interior led to the howdah, where an observatory offered tourists a scenic view of the Atlantic Ocean for ten cents.

She was located in what later became South Cape May - now the empty stretch of beach between Second Avenue and Cape May Point that today borders the nature preserve.

Although the electric railroad ran along the beach from east Cape May to Cape May Point, most people preferred to skip the paid attraction and enjoy the view from the Cape May Point lighthouse for free. Some lots were sold but in the end the Light of Asia was abandoned and after years of vandalism the city sent her to the elephant graveyard.

couple weeks ago I overheard someone working at a bakery tell a customer that their blueberry and goat cheese scones sell out instantly everyday. My ears instantly perked up. How was it possible that this bakery was selling out of something early every day that I had never tried? I couldn’t get this flavor combination out of my head so I suggested to the kids that we try to create these scones for Mini Chef Mondays despite

the fact that we had never made scones before. How hard could it be? The answer… not hard at all and we knocked it out of the park on our first try.

I’m always on the lookout for kitchen gadgets that are geared towards kids. We were lucky to be sent a baking set from Handstand Kids and we used the measuring cups for our dry ingredients of flour, sugar, salt and baking powder that got mixed in the food processor.

Next we cut in the butter. You can do this using a fork or food processor.

In a small bowl we combined lemon juice with 1 cup of blueberries.

In another bowl we combined milk, eggs and vanilla extract.

We added the goat cheese and blueberries to the flour mixture, giving it a gentle stir. Then we added the wet ingredients and stirred until combined. This was sticky. On

BLUEBERRY AND GOAT CHEESE SCONES

INGREDIENTS ▶2¾ ▶ cup all-purpose flour ▶2/3 ▶ cup granulated sugar ▶¾ ▶ teaspoon salt ▶1▶ tablespoon baking powder ▶1▶ stick unsalted cold butter (8 tablespoons), cut into small pieces ▶1▶ cup blueberries ▶4 ▶ oz crumbled goat cheese ▶1▶ juice of half a lemon ▶2 ▶ eggs ▶2/3 ▶ cup milk plus more for brushing on top ▶1▶ teaspoon vanilla extract ▶2 ▶ tablespoons coarse sugar for topping INSTRUCTIONS Combine flour, granulated sugar, salt and baking powder in a bowl or food processor. Cut in butter using a fork or pulsing in food processor until crumbly. In a separate bowl combine blueberries and lemon juice.

Add blueberries and goat cheese to flour

mixture. Mix until blueberries coated. In a separate bowl whisk together eggs, 2/3 cup milk and vanilla extract. Add milk mixture to bowl with flour and blueberries. Stir until mixture comes together, will be sticky.

Lay out two pieces of parchment paper and sprinkle some flour on each. Scrape half of the dough onto a piece of parchment. Form the dough into a 6 inch circle.

Repeat with other dough on second piece of parchment. Brush each circle with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Using a knife, cut each circle into 6 wedges. Separate the wedges from each other just a bit. Place each piece of parchment in the freezer for 30 minutes uncovered.

While dough is in the freezer preheat oven to 425. Place each piece of parchment on a baking sheet and cook for 20 minutes until golden brown. Allow scones to cool and then separate and serve.

Yoga Comes in Many Flavors!

ave you always wanted to start doing yoga, but didn’t know the difference between Vinyasa, Power, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Yin, Gentle, Restorative, and Bikram? I’ve put together a brief description of some of the more popular styles of yoga in the hopes you will feel more comfortable trying a class or two at your local studio.

Vinyasa means “to place in a special way” and is a style of yoga where students coordinate movement with breath, to flow from one pose to the next. Expect transitions and a continuous flow.

Power yoga is a fitness based Vinyasa practice that moves at a faster pace. Expect a lot of sweating and a great cardio workout!

Ashtanga yoga is an extremely physically demanding form of yoga that follows the same very precise sequence of poses every time with no variation. Meaning, an Ashtanga class at any studio, anywhere will be exactly the same.

Kundalini yoga incorporates meditation, chanting, and breath w o r k , a l o n g with the physical poses which are similar to Vinyasa.

Yin yoga is a form of yoga where you stay in poses for 2-5 minutes and all poses are in a seated or supine position. So depending on the class, you will only do 6-8 poses in total.

Restorative yoga is similar to Yin, in that you will only do 5-6 poses over the course of a one hour class. You will incorporate many props to provided additional support to allow you to fully relax into the pose, which you will hold for 5 minutes or more.

Gentle is a vinyasa practice, just done with much less intensity, and can vary from teacher to teacher. In many case it may incorporate the use of props, and minimizes the transitions from standing to seated.

Then there are the classes for people who enjoy the heat. Many studios offer vinyasa or power classes done in “heated” rooms, which means somewhere above 80 degrees.

Bikram, or Hot Yoga, is done in a room between 95 -108 degrees and 40% humidity, and consists of 26 poses, and several breathing exercises.

Each style can be adjusted based on your level of experience, and this article provides only a high level summary. As mentioned in my first article, yoga truly has something for everyone, and if you don’t see your flavor here, keep looking; there’s always goat or puppy yoga!!

The Hurley Line: Grossman for Congress Campaign is on Early Life Support

I

n the last issue, I predicted that United States House of Representatives candidate Seth Grossman would be under constant attack.

First, it was a national, market saturation level attack about Grossman's previous comments about diversity.

This story had a shelf life of almost two weeks. What this means in the life of a candidate is that you're taken off of your message and forced to play defense against "their" message.

When the course runs in this manner, you're always losing. The national media desperately wants to derail the Trump presidency. They know that about 50 races are going to decide which political party has the majority.

Will the country continue to move forward? Or, will Democrats have the

opportunity to end criminal investigations about very bad FBI actors, and introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump for who knows what reason?

Grossman should be able to trumpet this message from high above the mountain tops. But, the national media will not allow him to catch his campaign groove thing. Instead, week after week, the media is floating one past Grossman statement after another.

The latest example is CNN. It demonstrates how your own social media posts can bring about your undoing. All CNN KFile had to do was a review of Grossman's Facebook page and blog posts.

Grossman gave them everything and provided the road map that they needed to crush him. They are using his own past words about diversity, Muslims, African-Americans, gays, and more. CNN used an April, 2015 Facebook post whereby Grossman shared an article about Muslim migrants throwing Christians overboard from a refugee boat. This allegedly took place in the Mediterranean.

to decide what it means. He added his own words to the share: "This is where multi-culturalism and diversity has taken us."

When you're an ordinary citizen blogging and social media posting away, that's one thing. Some will write you off as intolerant, or some will agree with you. However, when you are running for a seat in The United States Congress, this is the kind of language that defines how the voters will perceive you and your character.

When it happens one time, you can usually survive it, by offering swift damage control and issuing an unambiguous apology. When it happens twice, as is now the case with Grossman, it becomes a campaign in crisis.

I guarantee you that it will happen again, soon. The national media will strike once again when this present issue simmers down. The third strike will place Grossman's campaign in a free-fall, where the national media is going to go for the political kill shot. They will cast Grossman as a bigot, racist and intolerant cave man, who is not fit to be a member of Congress.

It's already well under way. After the first attack about "diversity," Grossman was featured on the cover of The Philadelphia Daily News as a "Flintstones" prehistoric cartoon cave man, wielding a large club and all.

To illustrate that Grossman's provocative comments are at epidemic proportions, CNN also chronicled a December, 2015 social media post, where Grossman wrote that Kwanzaa was "a phony holiday invented in the 1960's by black racists to weaken and divide Americans during a Christmas season of joy and good will."

Grossman gave them literary prose "gold" in their pursuit of taking him down with his own words.

Grossman is very close to hitting the point of no return. When the media hangs you with your own words, it's heard to escape. It's like voluntarily placing yourself in a straight jacket for the duration of a campaign.

It leaves you all tied-up in knots and you can't be heard regarding any of your key platform issues. You get defined, judged, and disqualified, while you attempt to escape your straight jacket bondage without dislocating your shoulders.

Grossman did his best to respond to CNN's Kfile, saying: "Over the years, I often made provocative statements for the purposes of provoking interest and open discussion on vitally important issues I believed were being ignored."

Grossman added: "Although some of

the statements in your email below include some generalizations and remarks that may be offensive to some, I believe they were necessary to bring attention to important issues. I also believe them to be substantially true."

And there lies the problem for Grossman as a national candidate. He couldn't disavow saying these and other things.

So, he made them necessary evils, in order to have a teachable moment. He added that he believes them to be true, which also means that he owns the words. and he's not just teaching others.

CNN also hits Grossman with his own words, where he has chronicled that "Muslims cannot be good Americans.

Islam is a cancer�, and he said that “gay men with HIV should have been quarantined back in the 1980's," all according to Grossman.

The national media is well into the process of burying Grossman in his own words. It's the toughest escape act that a candidate can ever face. You have no one else to blame. It will be a supreme test for Grossman. He's presently in triage. He's desperately trying to stop the bleeding, while also knowing that the next gaping wound is about to be exposed.

You probably haven't noticed, but, we're more than 900 words into this column and there's been no mention of the Democratic nominee, State Senator Jeff Van Drew. This plays into hands in way that he couldn't have scripted if he tried.

Van Drew was already the prohibitive favorite going into this race. This makes his job even easier. He benefits from this Grossman deluge of previous statements about provocative topics, without having to say a bad word.

Van Drew is not a negative campaigner. It's not his make-up. He's a very positive individual, who prefers to focus on his record of accomplishment, and not tear down his opponent for some perceived political gain. It has worked well for Van Drew, because he's authentic.

The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee would not comment to CNN about Grossman's social media posts. This is the first indicator that they have either left Grossman, or are in the process of doing so.

This will leave Grossman with no national campaign apparatus. If this happens, it affects literally everything: he won't have money, on-the-ground campaign assistance, or any meaningful Get-Out-The-Vote capabilities.

On the other hand, Van Drew will have millions of dollars to spend and the full-throated support of the Democratic National Congressional Campaign Committee.

This race is still very early with more than four months left. But, if you're being honest, you can already see how the national media is going to seek and try to destroy all Republican candidates in the key 50 races that will decide the majority.

Democrats need to pick-up 23 seats to take the majority. The national media has correctly identified that New Jersey's Congressional District 2 is one of the key potential pickups.

What it also means is that this race is going to be very nasty. Grossman is not just going to sit back and be played like a human pinata. He's going to strike back.

CNN relentlessly went for the candidate kill shot, chronicling dozens of passages of Grossman in his own words.

Exactly as CNN listed them is as follows: On Islam and Muslims: In June 2015, Grossman shared a meme of an Arab man saying, "All I want to do is move to your country, rape your women, bomb your buses, riot in your streets, and demand that you accept my religion. Why can't you be more tolerant?" and under the meme it said, "share if you understand this is Obama's religion." (When reached for comment, Grossman told CNN, "I do not recall knowingly posting that Barack Obama is a Muslim. My guess is that id (sic) did not notice the language under the meme when I shared it.")

In May 2015, Grossman posted that Muslims "want to live in our country to take over our country."

In a July 2016 blog post, Grossman wrote about his views on Islam and Muslims, writing that "Islam is stuck in the barbaric, cut-throat world of Arabia 1,400 years ago" and that Muslims "can attack, kill, rob, rape, or enslave" non-Muslims. He went on to say that "Good Muslims who believe and support these principles of Islam cannot be good Americans. Only 'bad' Muslims who reject their religion can be good Americans."

In March 2016, he shared a Breitbart article and wrote, "Islam is a cancer. The fact that it already infected a billion people is even more reason to fight it every way we can."

In April 2017, he shared a Breitbart article about African migrants raping a woman in Sweden and asked: "Since when did 'diversity' become a virtue?"

In February 2015, he compared Muslims to Nazis and Japanese people during World War II, writing, "How many German Nazi immigrants did we welcome to America during the middle of World War II? How many Japanese?

Why are we inviting thousands of Muslim immigrants to our towns and neighborhoods when we are in the middle of a war with Islam?"

In addition to his own posts, Grossman shared articles and posts by anti-Muslim activists such as Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Geert Wilders.

On then-President Obama: In December 2016, Grossman wrote, "Most of the racism Barack Obama faced as President, was the racism he deliberately created and exaggerated to increase his political support and power."

In November 2015, Grossman shared a post that had a picture of dead bodies in the aftermath of the 2015 terrorist attacks at a Paris concert that included a caption saying, "This is Islam. This is what Barack Hussein Obama has been promoting, funding and defending for seven years." And "This is what will come to America disguised as 'refugees.' " In July 2016, he shared an article from the conspiracy site InfoWars and wrote that Obama had provoked conservatives by failing to produce his birth certificate for months and by going out of his way to speak Arabic and defend Islam.

On African-Americans: In December 2015, Grossman wrote that Kwanzaa was "a phony holiday invented in 1960's by black racists to weaken and divide Americans during a Christmas season of joy and good will."

In March 2015, he shared an article about black teenagers killing an elderly white man with the comment, "Young black men like this usually murder other young black men," and that "unless we act quickly to change things, more children like these will be murdering more of our children."

In October 2017, Grossman shared an article about American children being "immersed in a culture of disrespect" and wrote that "this is what is causing most of the division and disintegration. In black communities, a layer of hatred/resentment of whites is added." In a February 2014 blog post, Grossman complained that Black History Month was an entire month, and that beforehand February "was once an American History month."

On diversity: In a February 2014 post, Grossman criticized a Coca-Cola Super Bowl advertisement for highlighting diversity and multiculturalism.

In a July 2015 post, Grossman wrote that progressive, Democratic policies led white Americans to "commit mass suicide" and intentionally caused white Christians and Jews to have fewer grandchildren.

In a January 2015 post, he criticized the television show "How to Get Away With Murder" for having cast minorities, women and one progressive white man as the protagonists while casting the villains as rich white men.

In one April 2015 Facebook post, Grossman shared a news article about Muslim migrants throwing Christians overboard from a refugee raft in the Mediterranean and added: "This is where 'multi culturalism' and 'diversity' has taken us."

In a December 2017 post, he criticized modern immigrants in the United States for not assimilating, com-

paring them with past generations of immigrants, and shared a post that said diversity leads to incompatibility.

On the threats to Jews and Christians: In October 2017, Grossman wrote "I believe that Jews and Christians alike in most of the world are today in as much danger as Jews were in Europe in 1920's and 1930's." On George Soros: In March 2017, Grossman compared George Soros to Leon Trotsky, saying he was an international communist and a Jew. (Grossman told CNN, "I do not recall the details of the March 17 post about Soros and Trotsky. I recall making comments how both men gave ammunition to Jew-haters. It is a wellknown fact that Trotsky was driven out of the Soviet Union in 1920's or 1930's by Stalin because he wanted to spread Communism around the world, while Stalin wanted to build communism 'in one country'. I don't recall how those two themes are connected.")

On gay men with HIV: In an October 2014 blog post, Grossman wrote that gay men with HIV should have been quarantined in the 1980s but progressives had opposed the policy for the first time. (Grossman defended this post to CNN, saying, "The book 'And the Band Played On' made the case that hundreds of thousands of gay men died needlessly because of

political correctness, and a refusal of public health officials to apply the same measures used to prevent the spread of other diseases. I found that book very persuasive.")

This is the level of attack and intensity that Grossman is presently facing by the pro-Democratic national media.

They have been and will remain relentless in their attacks of Grossman to disqualify him from serious consideration.

The national media is especially effective at doing this, when you give them volumes of controversial statements in your own words.

rna Kocevska is an Atlantic City resident, born and raised in Macedonia. Srna has a passion for the arts and for dance that radiates from her strong, yet delicate, presence. She is the epitome of a ballerina emanating grace and precision yet while standing in her petite frame with incredible strength. Srna has been dancing since she was 9 years old. As a young adult, Srna performed in the Macedonian Opera and Ballet Theatre and several other prestigious performances.

Growing up in Macedonia, she lived in poverty.

Srna grew up during war times in her country. She witnessed her parents experience a heart wrenching marriage followed by her single mother continuing to raise her by herself. It was during these years that dance became her outlet. Srna has often wondered what her life would be without dance and credits the dance and arts scene to being the saving grace over her life. Art gave Srna the chance to be free and to embrace others or to experience what she calls, “a life far away from reality” when she was on stage. She references art as being “air” to an artist.

Macedonia is a very art cultured city so when Srna arrived in the United States, living in Atlantic City, she was shocked to learn how many children were being deprived of the art experience that she held so dear to her heart.

The lack of art culture made her feel sad, lonely, and out of place. So she began to do what she does best - dance.

In 2014, Srna began teaching ballet at the

Margate JCC. By 2016, she was teaching dance at Dance and Fitness Studio in E.H.T. and became a mentor and dance teacher with the S.H.E. Inspire organization for young girls.

Shortly after, Srna began to plan what would eventually become “Through The Artist’s Eye,” a showcase of art that was featured this year as a monumental piece of the 48 Blocks Celebration. Atlantic City Arts Foundation program director, Zach Katzen, referenced this showcase as the complete encapsulation of what

48 Blocks was all about.

Through The Artist’s Eye was a multimedia project dedicated to raising awareness about the arts scene in Atlantic City. Dancers, photographers, street artists, painters, musicians, and more came together to showcase what art means to them and how it has had such a powerful impact on their individual lives. Each artist was given a few moments to tough the viewers and give them a glimpse into life through their eyes.

There was not a dry eye in the house as artists shared how art literally saved their lives and how important it is to them to continue to cultivate art in the community.

Srna and many others in the art community believe in the power of the arts, that a community can begin to change for the better than the youth and adults alike are given the necessary and positive outlets that art offers.

I

’m a millennial. I’m sure you’ve heard about the “war on millennialism” and how people think that we are just young, lazy, and entitled people that don’t want to work for things. I’m here to share and show you that that isn’t true in the slightest.

Not only do we love to work for the things that we want, but we’ve reinvented what work looks likes.

I remember when I was back in high school, I would help my dad in the yard every year for summer clean up. Just to give you perspective of our property, it’s 3.74 acres, and about 2.5 of those were landscaped. In short we always had a lot of work to do. I must be honest and let you know that

I never really enjoyed the yard work, or the unbearable heat, with very little shade to hide under. But there was one thing that I always loved, and that was learning from my dad.

One really hot summer day after completing my freshman year of high school, my dad and I were cleaning up some leaves around the tree line of the yard. The pile of leaves just kept growing bigger, and my shoulders and biceps were getting weaker with every pull. I was so focused on the pain of raking and the heat beaming down on my shoulders and back that I began to lose sight of the goal. I was miserable. Honestly speaking, all I wanted to do was play in the pool that wasn’t even properly treated, or ready to be used. In short, I wasn’t happy in the slightest.

Poppa Byrd (dad) was the kind of guy that would watch you struggle to see if you could figure it out, and just before you lost your mind he’d swoop in with a simple fix that would make way for great results. At the moment that dad was watching I had

raked a massive pile of leaves that I was trying to get to the trash can. I struggled for about five minutes, until he came over and said something that would change the way I thought for the rest of my life.

“Dante….why don’t you just bring the trash can to the leaves?”

I whipped my head around in absolute embarrassment because the solution was so simple. In fact, I would go as far to say an infant could have figured that out. Sure enough, I was finished with that pile of leaves in a much quicker time than if I would have done it my crazy way.

However, I really didn’t think of this as just simple direction for clean-

ing the yard, for me it was more of a life lesson.

The lesson is very simple. Whatever you want, and whatever you need, you have to go and get it. That is the millennial generation. We have created a culture that says “I like this and I will stop at nothing to get it”.

The unfortunate reality is that we don’t always do it as traditional or customary as some of the older generations would like to see, but that’s what sets us apart. We are new and we are inventive, we are bold and we are fearless, we are wild, and yes, we are reckless.

I can’t wait to continue to share stories with you about local millennials that beat the odds of what is being said about us. I can’t wait to share with you real-time successes of us millennials, through creative and artistic outlets, and how we actually impact communities and regions in a positive way. Now that you have a very introductive understanding of who we are, remember we are the “Wild Ones” and these are our stories.

Tip #1: Journal. There is nothing quite as powerful as sitting quietly with your own thoughts and connecting with yourself. Journaling is one of the oldest form of self-help in the world. Our thoughts can get messy and trying to sort through them can often prove overwhelming and lead us to feeling mentally drained and disconnected. Journaling is your invitation to dump it onto paper then decide what you’ll do with the thoughts. Let it all fall onto the paper then challenge yourself to get rid of the things that are no longer serving you. Some things only exist because we’re still carrying them around. Journaling is the epitome of self exploration: Explore who you are, what you think, and how you feel. It may start slow but eventually you will begin to feel lighter and more self aware.

Tip # 2: Ditch the self critic and show yourself grace . Self criticism is the biggest hinderince of living a confident, full, and authentic life. We are all human, we all have struggles, we all have “things” that we deal with. The world is hard enough though, we don’t need to continue to be harder on ourselves.

I’ve learned to use self affirming phrases such as “I’m working on it” or “I’m doing alright!” when I find myself struggling with anything from body image to my marriage. Life will never be perfect but shame, guilt, and self hate certainly will not make it better. Show yourself grace in all things! You are worthy of self-acceptance. Think about what areas of your life that you are treating yourself with criticism rather than grace.

Jot it down in your journal and commit to making small shifts starting today.

Tip #3: Stop waiting to be happy. Happiness doesn’t wait on the other side of whatever goal you’re working towards. If you aren’t experiencing joy now, achieving x-goal will only bring momentary happiness later. Stop waiting to be happy and begin to seek joy right now. Even if things aren’t perfect, celebrate the good!

Self discovery is in large part learning to create your own happiness rather than depending on it from outside sources.

Happiness and self worth are not meant to be outsourced.

Tip #4: Take off your false name tags.

Have you ever smelled a rose? Yes? What did it smell like? Can you describe it?

It smells kinda like …Well, a mixture of ... And ... Right? If we can’t describe something as simple as the smell of a rose with one label, how do we so easily label something as complex as a human being?

And yet we place these labels on ourselves so easily - Introverted, addict or addictive personality, freak, unlucky, stubborn, not enough, stressed, lonely.

You’re not any one thing and you don’t have to be what you’ve been telling yourself you are. Who you think you are, what you label yourself as, is what you will eventually grow to become but you can change what you tell yourself.

Tony Robbins once asked in a speech, and I am paraphrasing - “When did you start telling yourself those lies about yourself?” When did you start to live up to the “false truths” as I like to call them?

And when will you begin to change those truths?

What have you labeled yourself as over the years that it’s time to put down the weight of carrying? What positive names do you need to start affirming over your

life? “I AM” are the two most powerful words used together. What will you place after them?

Tip #5: Honor yourself today and every day going forward. Let your story unfold. This is the first page of a new book.

You can write it however you choose. I would encourage you to just honor what you’ve identified to be true, authentic, real, and important to YOU . Honor it and hold it high and when you do that, the rest of the pieces will fall into place.

Sometimes in order to discover what we need to be and who we need to become, we need to let go of the things that no longer serve us or that hold us back.

Give yourself permission to do that - let go of what is not encouraging and empowering you to be all that you desire to be.

Try these affirmations on for size: I am true to myself I am worthy of the goodness that comes my way I am working on it I honor my priorities I am at peace today I am who I am and I choose to love her unconditionally Who I am today is enough

’ve always been an athlete. I was always involved in sports; you name it I did it. The one thing that has stuck with me is running. I remember when I was 7, my dad, who also was a runner, asked me to go jogging with him. From that point on, I was hooked. Between track in my teens, weekend racing in my early thirties, and landing a spot on Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge television show, running has always been with me.

Now that the weather has been fairly nice I like to share my running with all of my clients. Sometimes I hear grunts, or “I hate running.” But then I get, “I never thought I would say this, but I actually like running.”

Running is so good for you, and that’s why I continue to do it and incorporate it in my workouts. Now my kids are running with me, in or out of the stroller.

Running can improve your overall mental health. Some call it the “ runner’s high”. When runners get that high, endocannabinoids are released, and your serotonin levels are boosted, which give you an instant rush of that feel good happy vibe. Who says you can’t run away from your problems?

When I’m running solo, I feel like I can solve the world’s problems, and I think so clearly. It’s those hormones that are getting released!

While running, you are strengthening your lungs by increasing lung capacity, and lowering the risk of high blood pressure by contracting

or sprints, you can burn calories in a shorter period of time.

If you currently aren’t into running, start now. The weather is beautiful, and we live at the Jersey Shore. There is nothing better than waking up as the sun is rising over the ocean, with no chaos or crowds; just you and your run. You will feel amazing. Start out slow. Make a goal: week one, 2 miles; week 2, 3 miles; and so on. For new runners, if you can run the whole time, do intervals and build yourself up. Try thirty seconds of running, then thirty seconds of fast walking, until you can get through that first mile without stopping to walk. Once you start, you will be hooked. We were born to run!

On Tour Surf Into Summer

T

he year was 1914, a young, humble Hawaiian, by the name Duke Kahanamoku, introduced surfing to the East Coast of America, by surfing waves off the Million Dollar pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Yes! Atlantic City! Duke spent time in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, training for the Olympics in swimming. Winning a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, he was Hawaii’s first Olympian.

The Duke became surfing’s ambassador around the world, sharing his Hawaiian ohana. Thousands of spectators came out to watch Duke’s first surf off the Young’s million-dollar pier.

Spectators were charged admission to get in to watch him from the pier.

The boards he rode were built by his brother in Hawaii and shipped over.

The boards were 9ft long, weighed 75 pounds, were 2 ½ feet wide, and were also finless. A big difference from the boards we ride today!

The Duke’s surfing mesmerized the crowds, and many wanted to try it. It was said that Duke gave some surfing lessons late that summer of 1914, and charged a fee for it.

Fast-forward 104 years, and there are now surf schools and camps all over the world. Surfing has really gained exposure, and it seems like almost everyone wants to surf, or at least give it a try. According to

Photo: the Paragon Agency Surfer Today, there are estimated to be somewhere between 25-35 million surfers in the world today, and this estimate could double with the introduction of the new wave pools that are popping up around the globe.

The surfing industry generates over $14 billion worldwide annually. When I was growing up there were no surf schools, camps, or surfing coaches;

you just grabbed a board and had to figure it out yourself. I wish I had the opportunity to have been taught and coached back then.

It wasn’t until the late 90’s early 2000’s that surf schools and camps really started popping up everywhere, and going to a surf camp, or getting a lesson, really started to become popular. Soft surfboards

with soft plastic fins, were introduced for safety, and have become very popular for beginners to learn on. In recent years, soft surfboards have added performance, and have proven to be fun to ride for any level.

You see professional surfers, Jamie O’Brien surfing huge pipelines on a “foamy” (slang for soft surfboard), Kalani Robb ripping on beater boards, and our local social media superstar, Ben Gravy, riding novelty waves wherever he can find them, on his foamies. Of course these soft boards aren’t nearly as high performance as a traditional high performance fiberglass surfboard, but they are fun to play around on in various conditions. Don Milora, of By The Sea, on the Ocean City boardwalk, says that he has seen sales of these beater boards going up in recent years because more kids are surfing, and with these boards you can get away with riding them on the swimmers beaches. By the Sea also offers private and semi private surfing lessons.

So, you’re thinking about learning to surf, taking a lesson to improve, or maybe you have kids that want to surf - what next? I would highly recommend finding a reputable surf school or camp, and learn the basic fundamentals, rather than trying to figure it out on your own.

Getting a lesson will help you learn how to surf a lot easier and faster than trying to do it on your own.

This will lead to the enjoyment of surfing rather than the frustration of floundering around, and trying it on your own, only to eventually give

up. Surfing looks easy, but it’s a very difficult sport to learn. It takes time and dedication, although it’s always fun to get out there in the Ocean and ride some waves, no matter your skill level.

The conditions are always changing; different sandbars, and high and low tides change the waves and winds. But that’s what makes surfing so exciting! It’s always different, and as you get better, you start chasing better waves. Some of us chase these waves around the world in search of the “perfect wave” but that’s another story!

Surfing is for any age. I gave a 79-year-old gentleman, and 4 generations of his family, a group lesson last summer, at my surf school in North Wildwood, and he actually stayed out the longest! Stacey

Marchel, owner of Stacey’s Surf Camp in Margate, says its becoming very popular amongst older woman to take surfing lessons- it’s not just for kids anymore. She holds her school at an all women’s group lesson every Wednesday during the summer. Chuck Piola, owner of Harbor Outfitters, reiterated the trend by saying that he’s seeing a lot of grown ups signing up for lessons, where in the past many folks may have thought these schools and camps were only for kids. Surf schools and camps offer a fun, safe, secure way to learn and enjoy surfing. For the kids, surfing builds self-esteem and confidence, and the enjoyment of riding their first wave is incredible! I still remember my first wave like it was yesterday! I love seeing the smiles on their faces after their first ride. So what are you

RISING INTEREST RATES HAVE LITTLE EFFECT ON JERSEY SHORE REAL ESTATE MARKET

s I mentioned my last article, mortgage interest rates have been rising steadily since the beginning the year, spiking sharply in the Spring, and yet Buyers are swarming around Atlantic and Cape May Counties like a pack of wild honey bees, thirsty and hunting for their future homes.

(Do bees actually get thirsty? I don’t know.

Let’s press on.) One would think that the rising rates would put a huge damper on the real estate market, but that is just not the case. So why aren’t those rising rates having the effect you would expect on the housing market?

Millennials are crawling out of their parents’ basements to buy homes. I hope that headline made you laugh. But it is true. The dream of homeownership is alive and well within that Millennial generation!

Contrary to what many think, Millennials are not all growing old in their parent’s basements. In fact, the National Association of REALTORS® reported that Millennials made up the largest share of homebuyers for the fourth consecutive year in 2017, and are beginning to creep into the secondary home market as well.

How bow dah? (Millennials will know what I mean by that. It’s our secret language.) So homebuyers are out and about the new generation of homebuyers are the heart and soul behind the housing market right now. Awesome job, Millennials!

Buyers are trying to lock in their rates so their mortgage payment doesn’t increase. When an interest rates rises, the Buyer’s mortgage payment rises and that extra money isn’t being applied to anything that benefits the purchaser.

First time homebuyers are pouncing on houses nationwide, as well as right here at home, to avoid paying that higher mortgage payment. First American

chief economist Mark Fleming put it this way: “The fact that rates are rising actually causes demand—particularly first-time homebuyer demand—as they try to crowd into the market and lock in a mortgage rate and price before both go even higher.” That’s what I call smart thinking, considering that even though rates are still high, they are still incredibly low, historically speaking.

Rates Affect Buying Power. Rates directly affect buying power. Buying power refers to the amount of home a mortgage borrower is able to purchase, based on that borrower’s credit score, income, debt to income ratios and additional factors.

As rates increase, the mortgage payment amount increases, which could (and most often does) affect what a buyer is able to get approved for. A buyer who was approved for a max amount of $250,000 at 4% may only be approved for $225,000 with a 5% interest rate simply because the payment is higher, creating a higher debt to income ratio. A $25,000 decrease in buying power is significant in price ranges under $500,000. It puts the homebuyer into an entirely different house hunting bracket. Because buyers have less buying power as rates increase, savvy Buyers are on the search to find a home before those rates go up any higher and they can’t afford the same style of home they once could.

Last week, we watched interest rates dip for the first time in months, due to concerns over global growth and US trade policy, but they’ve since began rising again. Despite those rising rates though, homebuyers are out shopping, creating high demand on a market that is starved for inventory This is also driving prices up slightly. Yay for our local real estate market! One quick tip for Sellers is to check with your lender to see if your loan is assumable. Many homeowners purchased their homes with record-setting low rates that can, in some instances, be transferred to another Buyer. This is a HUGE selling point in a market where interest rates are rising, but not negatively impacting demand. So go buy, sell and invest in the real estate market here at The Jersey Shore. lthough the weather went South on us this week, anglers still took advantage of the open summer flounder season. There exists a special excitement among families target-

ing the most notable Jersey Shore dinner ever. Our choice of preparation styles when feeding a group is ceviche, hands down. Dice flounder fillets into small pieces then cover them with lemon juice in a bowl. Dice

tomato, cilantro, red onion and jalapeno pepper into another bowl adding lemon and lime juice along with salt and pepper. Combine the two bowls.

Flounder should be white having been “pickled” or cooked by the acid in the

lemon juice. Dice a ripe mango into another bowl. Scoop a dollop of the ceviche mixture into a Tostito scoop and top with a spoonful of the mango.

Appetizers for a crowd that no one will forget!

James Texada of Villanova, Pa, put his Dad Tex on flounder last week, then repeated the feat with his father-in-law Richard Simmons, no not THAT Richard Simmons, this week with a beautiful bluefish.
