ast edition, I outlined my ideas for this upcoming hurricane season. Now I want to circle back and touch on something I'm not sure I covered. If I did, I want to hit the point home again. I read an article the other day claiming hurricanes are getting stronger and more numerous. I respectfully disagree with that assertion, as do many of my colleagues in the field, but it never gets any coverage because it goes against the "accepted" narrative. Last year was a freak year. There were a lot of storms that caused a lot of damage, but guess what? We knew it was going to happen based on the ocean temps, and general dynamics of the atmosphere over the main development region. No surprises there, just like we know that based on the same set of data, we will likely be around average this year.

It honestly pains me to see weather politicized. I'm not one to engage in politics, but when the field I've been studying nearly my entire life is represented incorrectly, I've got an issue with it. One can go back to any decade and find severe storms that impacted millions of people, and had great intensity. The issue? A lot of those storms in the 1800s through the mid 1900s didn't get reported on as feverishly as today. Our technology was inadequate as well, and there was no real concern back then. There where many storms that went unnoticed, so of course the numbers are going to be skewed a bit. As technology explodes, so does our understanding of these systems.

Population growth in areas that are impacted by hurricanes is also another huge factor. Millions of dollars in damage and loss of life, is directly related to the growing number of residents along the coast. If we go back in time, you'll see the decade with the most major hurricanes was actually the 1950s. Interesting isn't it?

Was it climate change then? Why is it now?

“Y

our vibe attracts your tribe,” they say. “The energy you put out into the world is what will come back to you.” So if I want to be surrounded by happy, positive people then I need to be a happy and positive person.

How do I experience happiness amidst the stress and chaos of life? Who in “my situation” (and we all have a situation) could be positive and cheerful? I wonder.

Becoming aware of the energy or vibrations that I am putting out into the world, whether positive or negative, was my first step towards creating the kind of vibe I wanted to possess.

Prior to that, my feelings were in the driver's seat. They simply happened to me, leaving me at their mercy. Then one day I decided to take my power back.

I declared that happiness is not a feeling, but rather a decision. I decided that I was going to be happy…..No. Matter.

What.

The decision was just the start of my mission to improve my vibe. My forced smile eventually turned into a habit of smiling, just because. It’s a daily decision and I have to admit, some days are easier than others.

After a while though, I noticed two things. First of all, when I act happy, (even if I am acting), I ultimately end up feeling better. Secondly, when I act happy, the people around me, feel more joyful. I truly think it is contagious.

Once those two things are in place, the real magic occurs. When I feel better and the people around me feel better, more desirable outcomes always ensue. Voila, a positive vibe can change everything.

Organizations and businesses also have a vibe which can be either positive or negative. Here at Shore Local, it's a priority to us, to keep it positive.

It is easy to talk about what's wrong, but it is empowering to talk about what is right. A neighborhood, a town, a city is not just made up of the latest breaking news or tragedy. Rather it is made up of the heart and souls of so many good folks doing life in a hundred different ways and going out of their way to lift one another up. Those are the stories that grab us.

Royal Farms vs. Wawa Royal Farms is coming to EHT

oyal Farms, a new Baltimore-based convenience store chain, is opening up in Egg Harbor Township, on the corner of Tilton and Fire Roads.

This will provide some direct competition for the area’s established convenience store leader, Wawa.

Royal Farms currently has 185 stores, mostly in the mid-Atlantic, but plans to open an additional five stores in South Jersey in the next 18 months. Wawa has more than 1,000 stores along the East Coast from New York to Florida. Some convenience store competition will be heating up this summer right here in Atlantic County. The winner will most likely be all of us, as the consumer, with lower prices and more selection for all.

Royal Farms will offer some new menu items, such as fried chicken, on and off the bone and in salads and sandwiches too. They will also have the typical convenience store items,

such as tobacco, lottery tickets, coffee and grab and go food items, as well as value-priced gasoline.

Chicken is Royal Farms claim to fame. It boasts of having never frozen chicken, but rather prepared and breaded chicken on site. It also offers hand-cut, fried potato wedges and wrap sandwiches, including one wrapped with lettuce for the gluten free.

Wawa and Royal Farm are both open 24-hours a day. Freshly-brewed coffee is offered all day long at both chains, but Wawa has more varieties. Both offer multiple flavors and

Royal Farms, on the other hand, calls their sandwiches, “subs,” which could definitely be considered a “No-No” in the Philadelphia area.

SWEETS Both have baked goods in a variety of shapes and sizes. Royal Farms has its own brand of baked goods, as well as a Krispy Kreme case of individual doughnuts. Wawa also features cases of individual baked goods, but Royal Farms has more to offer in this category.

A Sneak Peek Inside Ocean Resort

“T

his is the only family owned casino hotel and resort on the East Coast and throughout the country” says Seth School, Casino Advisor for Ocean Resort.

Ocean Resort, on the North end of the Atlantic City boardwalk, is prepared to open on June 28th.

Ocean Resort, the former Revel, gives home to 2,000 slot machines, 20 new restaurants, 6 swimming pools, a 32,000 square-foot onsite spa, and boasts just shy of 1,400 top of the line guest rooms. New amenities, bars, restaurants, and various lounges fill the once vacant space with what Schoor explains as “positive vibes.”

Ocean Resort is scheduled to open its doors the same day as the neighboring Hard Rock Hotel Casino.

“It’s the greatest comeback story in the history of the gambling industry, for two integrative resorts to open on the same day, two weeks after the governor passed the bill for sports betting. You can’t make that story up. We’re about Atlantic City.

Ovation Hall, the resort’s performance center, holds 5,500 seats and remains a beautifully designed location for shows, concerts, and more. Full show lineup will be released in the coming weeks.

In addition to the adult entertainment experience Ocean Resort will also provide a unique opportunity to entertain families. ‘Smash’ and ‘Wicked’ Star to Open 2018 Ocean City Pops Season Farmers Market and Wacky Wednesdays start on June 27 Tickets are on sale now for the season-opening performance of the Ocean City Pops featuring Megan Hilty. The show is at 7:30 p.m. July 2 at the Ocean City Music Pier.

Hilty is famous for her portrayal of Ivy Lynn in NBC’s musical drama “Smash.” A native of Seattle, Hilty moved to New York City after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and quickly made her Broadway debut as Glinda in “Wicked.” She went on to perform the role in both the national tour and in Los Angeles.

She followed up the series with a starring role on the NBC comedy “Sean Saves the World.”

Hilty received critical acclaim for her role of Brooke Ashton in the Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of “Noises Off.” She earned nominations for a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award and won a Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite Featured Actress in a Play. Her television credits include recurring roles on “Girlfriends Guide to Divorce,” “The Good Wife,” “Braindead,” and “Louie,” among many others.

The Hilty performance will be just one show in a star-studded lineup for the Ocean City Pops this summer. The schedule includes shows to appeal to a wide variety of musical tastes.

Magical Evening Gardens

ears ago, my friend and gardening guru, Esther, showed me a fascinating plant in her garden. By day it looks more like a really tall weed, but at night, like Cinderella, it transforms into a thing of beauty.

This yellow flower, called evening primrose, unleashes a wonderful fragrance through the air as its petals unfurl right before your eyes! Now that they are in my own garden, I enjoy their evening show and can practically set my watch by their performance each evening in the summer. These wonders led me to start thinking about planting an evening garden based upon that one plant.

Certain flowers are like night owls just waiting for the sun to set so they can begin their moonlit party.

Remember when you were a child, and at bedtime after the lights went out, your favorite toys and playthings turned into unexpected magical creatures in the shadows?

In the same way, at night your plants and flowers transform into something unrecognizable and mysterious.

Most of the greenery disappears and white flowers, barely noticed by day, suddenly show their faces and seem to float in the air. Trees also take on a completely different appearance when you shine lights on them from below. They look almost spooky with details of their trunks becoming visible in the shadows.

As the sense of sight is dulled, the other senses become keener and you notice wonderful fragrances hidden by day. Many evening flowers, such as flowering tobacco (nicotiana) just start showing off their enticing scent at dusk. It’s like the fairies have come out to play. Here is another world

those who sleep haven’t discovered. These nocturnal friends wait until the sun goes to bed and suddenly, like little elves sneaking around corners, the flowers start peeking out until they are completely open, and the evening party begins. Butterflies and bees have gone to bed, but moths enter the garden and start drinking nectar as soon as the evening bloomers open. For you, who have chosen to linger in the garden past dusk, you will be invited to enjoy the scents wafting through the air.

Evening bloomers can’t rely on their beautiful colors the way a red flower can attract a hummingbird.

Instead, evening flowers have a strong fragrance to entice their pollinators.

As I was pondering this article, I couldn’t believe my friend all the way from Haiti was posting a picture of an evening cactus. Its name is night-blooming cereus, but I prefer its other name, “Queen of the Night”.

It really is dazzling, and like the other evening flowers, blooms for only one night and then fades away in the morning. Between its beauty, scent, and tragic ending, it is a truly romantic flower worthy of Shakespeare. My husband tells me my mother-in-law grew this enchanting flower, but sadly, I never had a chance to see it.

Consider starting your own evening garden. What a great way to de-stress after a long day of work. Stroll through your haven in the cool of the evening and enjoy the scents of evening bloomers such as Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia) or Devil’s Trumpet (Datura). Plant flowers that are white or light in color and they will reflect even small amounts of light. Also, choose plants with variegated leaves such as hostas which will really stand out. Another evening bloomer is moonflower. These bright white flowers are

the nocturnal cousins of morning glories.

They both grow on a vine and I enjoy the irony of growing them together. As one goes to sleep, the other is just beginning to wake. Four o’clocks are fun, colorful flowers to add to your garden. They begin opening in the afternoon and stay open until morning. They have a wonderful fragrance, so plant them where you will be able to catch their scent drifting through the evening air.

Water features are fun in an evening garden. What a relaxing sound to hear water trickling from a fountain after a stressful day.

I love to add candles and flowers to float in my fountain for a peaceful and dreamy sight.

I hope I’ve inspired you to start your own moonlit garden, or at least find ways to enjoy your existing garden after the sun goes down. Add some stringed lights, solar lights, and floating candles to your garden while you sit around the fire pit with friends or just enjoy the peace and solitude of an evening garden.

e are going to move forward on the bill to ban smoking on New Jersey’s beaches as a way to keep dangerous secondhand smoke away from the people who use our beaches — especially the children — and as a means of keeping our beaches clean," stated NJ Senate President, Steve Sweeney.

Currently, outdoor smoking ordinances are voted on at a local or county level. Many New Jersey towns have already made the decision to ban smoking on their beaches. Ocean City is the most recent shore town to join the anti-smoking movement. At an early June City Council meeting, Councilwoman Karen Bergman became the final vote needed to implement the ban in Ocean City. Over 25 other seashore towns throughout Monmouth, Cape May, Ocean, and Atlantic Counties have already implemented their local bans on smoking.

Egg Harbor Township resident, Kim Burns is the Southern Regional Coordinator for Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey. Having a lifelong heart for public health, Kim has spoken out on this topic for many years.

She shared with Shore Local, “We are excited that Ocean City took the step to protect their residents and beach goers from second hand smoke. The Surgeon General has said “There is no amount of secondhand smoke that is safe.” Laws like this protect the wildlife and environment as well.”

Local towns are awaiting the decision by Gov. Phil Murphy to approve the law that would impose a smoking ban on the majority of all public beaches. The new legislation would

allow for 15 percent of each beach to be designated as a smoking area.

With many local residents pushing for the passing of the bill as well as a 32-1 Senate vote and 66-1 Assembly vote, it it likely that the Governor will approve of the ban. Assuming he does, the rule will not go into effect for 180 days.

In addition to the well being of the public, the preservation of the environment is of great concern here as well. An annual report done by Beach Sweeps reported that beach goers left behind 29,000 cigarette butts last year alone. Kim Burns shares, “a discarded cigarette filter can leach chemicals into the sand and water. Ocean City and the other shore towns have made great steps toward creating more family friendly experiences by passing their laws.”

There are, however, a few opponents of the smoking bans. Those that are against the ban argue that the beach is a free and open space where smoking should be allowed for those that enjoy it. Many feel as though the law takes away their rights as a smoker and as an individual.

If the state law is passed, financial penalties would ensure for violating the ordinance. First offenses would range from $100-$250. Second

New Jersey, Wine and Summertime

elcome Summer 2018!

I am Donna Albano, a happy new contributor to Shore Local Magazine. Summer at the Jersey Shore is full of opportunities to experience authentic “Garden State” flavors like Jersey tomatoes, blueberries, and peaches.

Visitors and residents alike also flock to our unique shoreline boasting 130 miles of coastline to visit our beaches and bays, lighthouses, fishing villages and more. New Jersey also offers some of the best wineries and festivals allowing tourists and residents to experience “Jersey Fresh” up close and personal.

The history of wine in New Jersey

is long and storied, but grapes have been growing in New Jersey since early colonial days. Since the year 2000, the New Jersey Winery industry has seen exponential growth, and the number of farm wineries continues to increase, developing old and new varieties of wine that grow well in the state.

Tom Cosentino, Executive Director of the Garden State Wine Growers Association, is happy to report that the industry is experiencing “continued growth” and speaks proudly of the newest designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Cape May Peninsula.

This marks the fourth micro region designated by NJ State Department of Agriculture, joining Central Delaware Valley, Warren Hills and the Outer Coastal Plain, which covers Southeastern NJ including Cumberland, Atlantic, and Ocean Counties.

With over 50 wineries in the state, finding one near you is easy. The Garden State Wine Growers Association website is a great source of information, including a full calendar of winery events, wine trails, and festivals.

They have a downloadable app that encourages you to use a Passport feature so you can easily find wineries near you and check in. Cosentino encourages the Passport because it gives the visitor a “great sense of what the state is making”. For more information visit https:// www.newjerseywines.com/ Wine festivals are a great “entry level way to start” your New Jersey wine tasting experience, says Cosentino. “There’s something for everyone’s palate. The wineries that participate use festivals as an opportunity to pour their wine for a large audience, to cultivate fans of their wine, and encourage visits

to their wineries and tasting rooms.

The wineries themselves provide a full experience of place and culture, from tasting the wine, to seeing the vineyard, to meeting the winemaker. You don’t have to go far to find award winning wines and beautiful tasting rooms for an authentic New Jersey experience.

Another way to experience and learn more about New Jersey is to participate in Stockton’s 2nd Annual Pinelands Summer Short Course on Thursday, July 19th in Hammonton, New Jersey. This full day experience allows you to pick from a menu of seven field trips and seven classroom lectures. One of those will be delivered by Tom Cosentino, of the New Jersey Wine Growers Association, on the History of New Jersey’s Wine Industry. Tom will discuss the history that links back to the 1800’s when the first commercial wineries were established in New Jersey including Louis Nicolas Renault and the Renault Winery. How to Make the PRICED 50% BELOW OTHER STORES Most of This Summer

ummertime, and the livin’ is easy…. or so the song goes. But before you get too comfortable, I want to throw a word of caution your way. Don’t blink. Summer is unfolding before us now, and before we know it, it will be September. For those of you who love and live for Summer, I’m not trying to burst your bubble or rain on your parade (heavens knows we’ve already had enough “rain” on our parade this season to last us all year.) Rather, what I’m trying to do is encourage you to be intentional as you move into the season. What do I mean?

If your family is anything like mine, you’re already seeing the calendar begin to fill-up in the days and weeks ahead.

The temptation is to just go with the flow and see what happens. But if you do that, you’re more likely to experience the end of Summer regrets. There will be days not spent, time not shared and places not visited. It’s no ones fault. It just happens. One week turns into the next and the next and boom, it’s Labor Day weekend. So, here is what I suggest (I’m going to suggest to my family that we do this as well.)

Take a Time Out - Send out an alert to the family that, as a family we are going to sit down, think about what the Summer looks like from here and have a

discussion. Everyone brings their schedule, their hopes, their already planned out events, everything to the table for all to see.

Set up a Calendar - It’s not important what type of calendar you use. It could be digital. It could be a physical calendar or both. But the important thing is to make a calendar that everyone can work from. Then you start to mark off what’s on the agenda already, what is negotiable and what additional things everyone wants to accomplish or experience.

Stay Connected - What I mean is that everyone impacted by the calendar has to stay on the same page. Sure some things will need to be modified, added or deleted. But the important part is that everyone is intentional about keeping each other informed and on track.

I know this all sounds kind of rigid and business like, but if the goal is to make the most out of this Summer of 2018 (and there will only be ONE Summer of 2018), you must be intentional about making it happen.

Let’s all make a pledge to ourselves to be able to look back on this Summer when September rolls around and say with confidence that we made the most of the time we were given.

I

t is a dream for most people to live on, or at least, near the water. In a shore community like ours, the smell of saltwater in the air, boardwalks, the distant cries of seagulls, and the warm sand between our toes brings a peaceful and comforting experience that one would be hard-pressed to replicate. Who wouldn’t want to live in a place like this?

This dream has become a nightmare for people with homes at the Sea Village Marina, which can be found off the Margate Causeway in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey’s last host of non-motorized houseboats. The buildings have been slipping into gradual disrepair ever since the colossal super-storm Sandy wreaked her havoc back in October of 2012. The area has been deemed off-limits, and there has yet to be any action taken to put a stop to the homes slowly sinking into the water beneath. It is a travesty, to say the least.

With the docks completely destroyed after Sandy, it’s been an uphill battle ever since for homeowners, one that seems to be more and more

Sea Village Marina, Climate Change, and Survival like a losing one as the days pass. The homes are beginning to sink. It’s become so bad, in fact, that the marina has been deemed unsafe for visitors.

Now, the area is even surrounded by a giant metal fence to keep even the bravest of onlookers out.

This is yet another example of how climate change has negatively and dangerously impacted our own communities – an inconvenient truth, I know. Cars, air-conditioning, fast food, consumer goods prettily packaged in glistening plastic – all of the stuff we love has put a weight on our planet as perilous as a desperate heart clogged with cholesterol. I can rage on about this for pages and pages, but I won’t. This article is primarily concerned with how erratic weather patterns caused by climate change have devastated certain parts of the Jersey Shore.

First off, I have zero patience for climate change-deniers. This is not a conspiracy created by the liberal media (or whatever the latest propaganda is that oil companies are feeding to Fox News or InfoWars); it is a fact that everyone in our area has witnessed in horror. Scientific data shows sea levels are on the rise, eight-inches since 1900 to be exact. 99.9% of the scientific community has called this and other cogent evidence incontrovertible.

Sea Village Marina is a harbinger of what’s to come. The problem is, for residents who live closer inland it’s a gradual process. We are inundated

by Hollywood when it comes to natural disasters.

Films like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 offer plots that are as drastic as they are destructive

on a global scale. Reality is more abstract and elongated than this. A film only has about ninety minutes to get its point across; Mother Nature can take her time. But as we have seen and experienced, her time grows much more catalyzed the more CO2 we pump into the air.

Think about the financial devastation caused by climate change, as well. It has been reported that the redeveloper of Sea Village Marina has spent a million dollars on a new bulkhead surrounding the area. Bulkheads and levees are fine; however, as the icecap melts and the sea levels rise, any divider will have to grow higher and higher to keep up. This disheartening fact always makes me think of an impoverished country like Bangladesh.

Surrounded by the world’s largest delta, Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries on Earth in regard to climate change, simply because a country like Bangladesh cannot afford the proper protection it needs from flooding. It is estimated

that by 2020, 500 to 750 million people will suffer the dire consequences of climate change.

But people still have doubts. I do believe this is because the term “global warming” is misleading.

“Why do we still have snow and winters if the planet is warming up?” This is a question people like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity and even our president have speculated about on television and social media platforms like Twitter. The answer is simple and available to anyone who has access to Google or the Weather Channel for that matter:

Arctic Oscillation. Simply put, air moves from one place to another due to air pressure, specifically between the North Pole to areas further south (say, the middle of the United States). Air pressure can be a lot higher in the Arctic, so the cold air moves south. This is called a “negative phase.”

We are still seeing Arctic Oscillation in extreme negative phases, which will continue to cause cold and snowy winters… for the time being. But as man made greenhouse gases build up more and more, the ice caps will continue to melt, sea levels will continue to rise, and places like Sea Village Marina will be the first to suffer the consequences.

There are blatant examples of the negative effects of climate change all over South Jersey.

Take Atlantic City: the city’s casinos are on high ground, fortress-like in their structure. Poor areas, however, are not. Smack right in the middle of floodwater paths, residents in these areas have no idea what to do. All a person has to do is take a drive through these neighborhoods to see the flood-damaged, abandon-properties. The evidence is all around us.

No one knows what the future holds for Sea Village Marina. I cannot see residents being optimistic, though. Every day these properties are left neglected, the more they will sink into the water below. Being that they are the last of non-motorized houseboats in the state, this is the end of an era. It is a shame to say the least.

But there is hope. The more people who educate themselves and make little changes in their daily routines regarding climate change, the more of a chance we have to get out of this mess. All of the information needed is a mouse-click away. It only takes a proactive person to seek it out.

he end of the school year feels like a mad dash to the finish line of a race. Between end of the school year parties, field trips, field day activities, and talent shows, everything is being crammed into a very short time before the clock runs out. Can anyone else relate? Well, I have good news for you: we are just about there and then you can chant “school’s out for summer!”. If you haven’t really been able to see past the finish line, you are soon going to find yourself with kids asking every morning, “what are we doing today?”. It’s time to come up with activities, fast! I’m looking forward to more relaxed mornings, without rushing out the door, and that’s all well and good for about a week, but then it’s time to start stimulating their brains again. I’ve

been keeping an eye on the local libraries for their freebies, and here are some that I think my kids would enjoy.

Surely at some point you will visit Ocean City this summer. If you haven’t been to their library, it is not to be missed.

They have ongoing summer programs for kids of all ages. On Mondays starting June 25th, they have a Brown Bag Craft Club from noon to 1pm for kids ages 6-10. Kids bring a bag lunch and do a craft, and yes, it’s free. I also plan to take my kids to the Libraries Rock Reading Club on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 because, even though they are out of school for the summer, I still want them to build on all of the great reading skills they learned in first grade! They also have an impressive lineup of free special children’s programs including the magician Chad Juros on July 3rd at 6:30, and the Dinoman Superheroes of Science program on July 17th at 6:30. Linwood Library has great programs planned as well, that I know my kids will enjoy. On Mondays from July 2nd through August 13th, they have a Summer Lego Club from 6:30-7:30 pm for kids ages 6 and older. Hometown Hero: Sister Patty

ister Patty Prendergast always had a heart for helping those in need. While growing up in Atlantic City, her parents often lent a hand or a meal to anyone in need. As a young adult, Sister Patty knew she too wanted to help others.

Sister Patty spent several years working with the homeless through different organizations, including the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, Jewish Family Services, and Covenant House. Through each experience she saw one great need that was not being filled. These women needed a place where they could go during the day to get off the streets. They needed a place where they could simply rest, have a cup of coffee, do laundry, have a healthy snack, and most importantly, be safe.

With funding from Daughters of the Heart of Mary, Sister Patty began Adelaide's Place 16 years ago. It was named after Adelaide DiCici, a French woman who was on trial for feeding the people

in her own home during the French Revolution.

“Adelaide DiCici’s mission was similar to ours,” says Sister Patty. “Whatever needed to be done, she did.”

Initially it was located in the basement of a church in Atlantic City. In the years since, Adelaide's place moved out of the church basement and into a full house in Atlantic City, where they have been for the last 9 years. The address is not public and there is not a sign over the door.

This is intentional in order to safeguard their mission of creating a safe haven for homeless women. Many of whom are victims of abusive relationships and have experienced trauma.

There is one strict rule and that is women only. “Many of these women have been abused and are fearful. “This is a safe place where they do not have to worry about the traumatic situations they may have to face in other places or on the streets.”

An average day at Adelaide’s Place has between 12 and 20 women in the house, resting, doing laundry, talking with one another. The average age of the women are in their 50s or 60s, but they welcome all women, and have had women as young as 18 and as old as 86. Many have disabilities or mental health issues. At Adelaide’s

Place, they are able to meet with their social workers that assist them to get the medical care they may need.

“They are like a family, and for many, they are all each other has,” says Sister Patty. “It always amazes me how well everyone gets along with one another.”

Adelaide’s Place, in addition to offering a safe haven and healthy snacks for women, offers food for the soul. Bible studies, music, pottery, and arts and crafts are made available. Happy Valley Berry Farm at Bacharach Institute Vegging at the Shore

A

ccording to Slow Food USA, a dollar spent buying directly from a farmer has about twice the impact on the local economy as spending a dollar on food that goes through a middleman like a supermarket.

One of the many reasons why I co-founded the Linwood Farmers Market was to help connect local farms to people in our community. Through this opportunity I was fortunate to get to know Shirley and Wes Kline, farmers at Happy Valley Berry Farm. They are two of the most genuine and knowledgeable farmers, and

fortunately you don’t need to visit them in Bridgeton, New Jersey to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Happy Valley Berry Farm is one of the farms that participates in the Linwood Farmers Market each season selling their pesticide-free produce. This summer they are trying something new by setting up a farmers market every Wednesday from 10-3 in the cafeteria of the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation in Galloway.

The market is open to the public, so if you find yourself in Galloway on a Wednesday, make sure to stop in and load up on fruits and vegetables. On a recent visit, I chatted with some Bacharach employees who told me how much they enjoy the new Wednesday farmers market not only because it’s so convenient having fresh produce available in the cafeteria for purchase, but also because of the high quality of the fruits and vegetables.

So what can you expect to find from Happy Valley Berry Farm when you visit Bacharach? Just about everything! When Shirley and Wes bought their farm in 1997, they started by growing raspberries, and later diversified into vegetable production.

Through trial and error they learned that growing berries in high tunnels made them free from disease and prolonged their shelf life. Several years ago they also started growing vegetables in high tunnels enabling them to grow cool season crops like carrots, beets, kale, and collards so that they could offer a winter CSA (community supported agriculture). Joining a CSA is a wonderful way to support a

farm by getting a weekly share of what they grow. Happy Valley Berry Farm offers a spring, summer and winter CSA with various size options.

Shirley always has recipes available to help people come up with ideas about how to use their produce, and I’ve seen her at the farmers market recognizing and chatting with repeat customers. Even if you don’t have plans to be in Galloway on a Wednesday, I strongly suggest that you make a special trip to Bacharach to not only stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, but also to support a special farm. Egg Harbor Twp. High School's Eagle Greenery

eptember 1989, Laura Butrus made her teaching debut as a math teacher at Egg Harbor Township High School. As a rookie teacher seeking advice from her colleagues, Lori followed their lead and offered a pre-test to kick off the school year. One young man was the catalyst that would change the future of her teaching career. As she handed out the pre tests, this particular young man ripped up the test stating that he simply did not need it. It was in that moment and throughout the course of Lori’s first year as a teacher that she realized that many high school students want very little to do with book work. They want to learn through hands on experience.

In an effort to meet her student where he was, she gave him a job taking care of the former greenhouse

that once lived on the second floor of E.H.T.H.S. It was there that he began to thrive and Lori began to consider other avenues of teaching.

Over the next year, Lori Butrus took the necessary steps to apply for a grant that opened the school’s store, bagel shop, and the flower shop. By 1993, the program began to grow and students were choosing to work in the flower shop as their elective year after year.

It’s in the flower shop that the students learn about real life skills. They learn how to work together as a team, how to run a cash register, and how to use math and measurements to make arrangements. They study geography and agriculture as they learn where the flowers are sourced from.

In addition to the life skills they

learn in the flower shop, they are taught about the importance of community service and giving back. This past year, students worked together to raise money for the EHT Teen Center. Everyone participating in the class had the opportunity to make unique flower arrangements. Students, teachers, and faculty in the district as well as community members were able to buy tickets and enter into an auction for their favorite flower arrangement.

After 28 years, Lori Butrus is just as excited about her job as she was on day one. She shares, “We’ve been around a while but every day is different and that’s why I like it. Every student is different.

It’s really all about building confidence in the kids and creating a family dynamic.”

We talked to a few of the current

Eagle Greenery students who shared their favorite things about working in the flower shop. Valerie Hilliard is a freshman in the beginners flower shop class who shared that she joined Ms. Butrus’ class because it helped her to learn new skills.

She goes on to explain that, to her, it’s so much more than making bouquets. Valerie’s face lights up when she talks about the confidence she feels when customers buy her flower arrangements.

Freshman student, Turcoise Adams explains that working in the flower shop gives her hands on life experience and is preparing her for working in the real world.

The Real Facts on Staying Healthy

at this, don’t eat that. Seems robotic in some ways. Developing healthy eating habits isn’t as confusing or as restrictive as many people imagine. The essential steps are to eat mostly foods derived from plants— vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes (beans, peas, lentils)—and limit highly processed foods. Here are our guidelines for building a healthy diet: Not all of the nutrients and other substances in foods that contribute to good health have been identified, so eating a wide assortment of foods helps ensure that you get all of the disease-fighting potential that foods offer. In addition, this will limit your exposure to any pesticides or toxic substances that may be present in a particular food.

You can eat all the broccoli and spinach you want, but for higher-calorie foods, portion control is the key.

In recent years, serving sizes have ballooned. In restaurants, choose an appetizer instead of an entree, or split a dish with a friend. Don’t order anything that’s been “supersized.”

When reading food labels, check serving sizes: some relatively small packages claim to contain more than one serving, so you have to double or triple the calories, grams of fat and milligrams of sodium if you’re planning to eat the whole thing.

Fiber is fact! Aim for 2½ cups of vegetables, and 2 cups of fruit a day, for a 2,000-calorie diet. If you con-

sume more calories, aim for more; if you eat fewer than 2,000 calories, you can eat less. Include green, orange, red, blue or purple, and yellow produce. The nutrients, fiber, and other compounds in these foods may help protect against certain types of cancer and other diseases. Legumes, rich in fiber, count as vegetables, though are moderately high in calories. Choose whole fruits over juice for more fiber. Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are good options.

At least half your grains should be whole grains, such as whole wheat, barley and oats. Whole grains retain the bran and germ, and thus all (or nearly all) of the nutrients and fiber of the grain. Look for a product labeled “100% whole wheat” or “100% whole grain.” If it doesn’t say that, look for a whole grain listed as the first ingredient, though there still may be lots of refined wheat (also called “white” or “enriched” flour) and or sugar .

The refined carbohydrates in white bread, regular pasta, and most snack foods have little or no dietary fiber and have been stripped of many nutrients. On food labels, watch out for “wheat flour” (also called “white,” “refined” or “enriched” flour) on the ingredients list. Also, limit foods with added sugar, such as soda and candy.

These are sources of empty calories that contribute to weight gain. Many sugary foods are also high in fat, so they’re even more calorie-dense.

Nuts, fatty fish, avocados, and vegetable oils supply healthy unsaturated fats. Recent research suggests these foods, though high in calories, tend not to promote weight gain because they are satisfying. Still, it’s best to eat them in place of other high-calorie foods. For instance, substitute olive or canola oil for butter. Fatty fish helps reduce heart disease risks and has other benefits, largely because

of its omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.

So many of my clients who start on a nutritional program with me, ask how they can cut back on foods that cause cholesterol, and what those foods are. Though a 300-milligram daily cap on cholesterol intake has long been advised, there's abundant evidence that cholesterol in food has little, if any, effect on blood cholesterol in most people. Thus, many experts no longer recommend limiting dietary cholesterol (found only in animal foods, notably eggs and shrimp). The egg has gotten a bad rap, is what I’ve always said . The best way for most people to lower their blood cholesterol is to reduce saturated fats (as in meats), and trans fats (from partially hydrogenated oils in processed foods). A possible exception is people with diabetes, who should talk to their doctor about their overall diet.

Beverages supply more than 20 percent of the calories in the average American’s diet. Some liquid calories come from healthy beverages, such as milk and 100 percent fruit juice.

But most come from soda and other sweetened beverages, and alcoholic drinks, which have lots of calories yet

few, if any, nutrients. Soft drinks are a major source of sugar and calories for many Americans, especially children.

Though juice is more nutritious than soft drinks, it’s also high in calories, so most people should drink no more than one cup a day.

Bottom line: be mindful of what you eat, which may help you eat less and enjoy your food more. Many cultures around the world emphasize the enjoyment of food, which often includes cooking and eating with others, as an integral ingredient to good health. Try to touch on the idea that eating healthfully involves "enjoying food and celebrating cultural and personal traditions through food."

According to some research, shared meal times, especially during childhood, may act as a “protective factor” for many nutrition and health-related problems, as well as increase prosocial behavior in adulthood.

The Layers of Local History

The Most Historic Hotel in Atlantic City

A

tlantic City was initially founded in 1854 to create a seashore resort as close to the factories of Philadelphia as possible. Before incorporation, much of the land was owned by Revolutionary War vet Jeremiah Leeds, who settled his family near what would become Brighton Park, at the intersection of Park Place and the Boardwalk. In a few years rooming houses dotted the strand, often replaced by the turn of the twentieth century with Second Empire Style Victorian hotels, with their mansard roofs full of windows. By 1930, several grand palaces had been built along the boardwalk, too few of which remain today, with the iconic Marlborough-Blenheim, and sandcastle-shaped Traymore among those lost to wrecking balls. Other hotels built

during this heyday of Atlantic City, when first Commodore Kuehnle, and then Nucky Johnson, ran things, include the Dennis (now part of the Bally’s complex) and the Chalfonte/Haddon Hall, home of the Thomas England General Hospital during WWII, and now the centerpiece of Resorts Casino.

The most memorable Atlantic City hotel created in this era was also the most modern. The Claridge, when completed in 1930 boasted an early form of air conditioning, and is now Atlantic City’s most historic hotel. Philadelphia-based architect John McShain, who would later create the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Pentagon, designed the twenty-four floor Claridge, which quickly became knowns as “The Skyscraper by the Sea”, thanks to elements recalling a Manhattan roofline.

Like the Ritz-Carlton several blocks away, the Claridge included hot and cold running fresh and salt water faucets in each guest room, with the idea being that bathing in salt-water had healthful benefits. Many famous faces stayed at the Claridge over the decades, from the 1930s to the 1970s, before the site was

A View Of The Claridge From The Boardwalk by Levi Fox temporarily transformed into “the Claridge Hotel and Hi-Ho Casino” (later “Del Webb’s Claridge”) in 1981. Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Al Capone, and Grace Kelly all stayed there, as well as Marilyn Monroe, who lodged there while serving as Grand Marshall of the Miss America pageant. Moreover, much national history has run through the Claridge.

In November of 1943, after having housed the Army Air Corps for more than a year, the Claridge was chosen to host the new United Nations, as it staged the first Relief and Rehabilitation Administration World Conference, whose stated goal was to “shorten the war and save the peace.” At this little-recalled meeting of the forty-four nations actively engaged in the fight against fascism, future U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson signed a pact with British Ambassador Lord Halifax, and Soviet representative Andrei Gromyko , while one Polish dignitary even noted that he brought “from Atlantic City a feeling of warm gratitude” for “the management and staff of the Claridge.” Two decades later, in August of 1964, the Democratic National Convention was held at the old Convention Center now known as Boardwalk Hall, which brought to town many important individuals, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who stayed at the Claridge during the event. Indeed, according to a 1975 New York Times article, Dr. King and his party were given rooms 1901, 1902, and 1923, which allowed them to be wiretapped by J. Edgar

Hoover’s FBI. Confronting such checkered episodes, the Claridge now partners with the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation, named for Atlantic City’s once-segregated beachfront block, to put on an annual Jazz Concert series that helps raise funds for the organization’s local community programs.

Since being purchased by the Radisson Company several years ago, the Claridge has also embraced its past as a way to separate itself from other hotels by creating period pubs like Malcolm’s Lounge and a Twenties Bistro, though their finest feature may be the VUE rooftop bar, which offers the very best views of Atlantic City. Perhaps most importantly (at least for this column) the Claridge will also be the home to a kick-off party for the 48 Blocks Arts Festival, which will feature yours truly fully in-character portraying Nucky Johnson. That event is taking place this Friday June 22 from 6-8 PM in the Ocean View Room, with tickets only $10 each.

Beach Fun and Games

ummer is officially here, which means more time to be outside, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. If you’re looking for some fun activities for family and friends while creating lasting memories, try some of these recommendations.

Kite flying is a traditional pastime that spans generations. They come in many different sizes and designs from

the traditional diamond shape to dolphins, butterflies, dragons, and birds.

All you need is a nice, breezy day and your kite will sail into the sky. Be sure to watch for objects like trees and bushes, and make sure to have enough room to move around. Costs start around $8 including string.

There is nothing like a friendly game of corn hole to make anyone’s day. Each team is given a set of beanbags with the objective to toss onto a tilted rectangular board. Points are awarded for keeping their beanbags on the playing surface, and three points for shooting it into the hole. Boards come in regulation size and modified versions, like the three-hole washer. The Hurley Line: Van Drew vs. Grossman: The General Election Race for Congress is on

T

he race to fill the seat left open by retiring United States Congressman Frank LoBiondo, is now underway, as the general election season has begun.

The next congressman from New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District will either be the democratic nominee, New Jersey State Senator Jeff Van Drew, or the republican nominee, Seth Grossman.

Based on the primary election campaigns waged by both men, they each deserve to be their party's respective nominees. Van Drew dominated the democratic primary, garnering more votes than his other three challengers combined. Van Drew also skillfully navigated politically shark infested waters.

His primary challengers were running very hard to his left. It could have placed Van Drew

in a tight box, whereby he was open to their attacks that he's too conservative.

It didn't work. Van Drew was masterful in not taking the bait. It left him unmarked going into the general election, when his well-earned conservative democrat bonafides will serve him well.

District 2 is a slightly center-right leaning district. If you're too conservative, you lose.

If you're too liberal or progressive, you lose.

The voting composition of the district is approximately: ▶Independents ▶ = 207,000 ▶Democrats ▶ = 150,000 ▶Republicans ▶ = 132,000 For his part, Grossman scored a stunning victory in the republican primary, by running nearly a perfect campaign on a shoestring budget, totaling just $ 25,000. This is far less then is usually spent in a local council race by one candidate After winning his Party's Nomination, Grossman enjoyed a few days of peace and after glow. Then, the first political attack was fired with blistering speed and market saturation intensity.

The national media desperately wants the democrats to win back the majority of the United States House of Representatives.

They are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

The 2nd Congressional District race is in the Top 10 of every major list in America, in terms of current republican districts that are the most likely to turn democrat. This is a big boost for Van Drew.

A YouTube video clip of Grossman discussing "diversity" was recently unearthed.

Get ready. It will be the first of many. Grossman is a very well documented public figure with many hours of audio and video floating around the information superhighway.

Van Drew won't have to lift a finger. This is not the type of campaign he wages in the first place. Van Drew does not attack first.

However, if you attack him, he will then unleash his own disproportionate retaliatory response. That's only fair. Van Drew is the consummate gentleman, however, he's not a punching bag.

Outside groups, along with other interested and uninterested third parties will be smothering Grossman with one attack after another. It's already started and it will not stop until General Election Day, Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Further, the political tactic these days is to conflate and use partial statements, and portray them as incontrovertible facts, and relentlessly attack a candidate. Grossman will endure the same fate as President Donald Trump in this regard. President Trump recently stated that "MS 13 Gang Members are animals." The national media and their fellow liberal partisans purposefully distorted this into a bald faced lie that President Trump was calling all immigrants in America "animals." It was an absolute falsehood, but they ran with it for weeks.

The tactic is to put a candidate marked for electoral death on a daily uneasy footing, whereby they're placed in the position of always having to explain themself with one attack after another. Therefore, they're losing in the court of public opinion.

Van Drew has a nearly 30-year voting record at all levels of government: from Dennis Township Committee, to mayor, Cape May County freeholder, New Jersey assemblyman, and state senator. His record is consistent and impressive. He votes against budgets that are not responsible. Van Drew is a rare democrat, who is not part of the typical monolith. He'll vote his conscience.

It's rare to find these days.

Van Drew has also proven that he will work effectively with the other side. This is almost lost in today's politics. Van Drew worked very well with former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

If Christie was right about something, he could earn Van Drew's support. If Van Drew didn't agree, he would vote against a measure. This gives Van Drew credibility, and although this issue is never poll-tested, I strongly believe that voters want our elect-

ed officials to work together for our best interests.

Today, both parties refuse to support a measure proposed by their loyal opposition.

It's become a filthy game of posturing to win the next election at the expense of doing what's right by the American people.

In this issue, we've done a three question lightening round with Senator Van Drew, and, we'll do the same with Mr. Grossman in the near future.

1. What is your (Van Drew) philosophy of governance: "First of all, I have been, and will be known, for excellence in constitute services. We have actually helped to save people's lives; to make sure that our citizens get needed medical coverage from insurance companies. I have, and will continue to, work on a bipartisan basis, to work on both sides of the aisle. You can do important work. There is much more that brings us together then separates us.

Particularly these days, congress doesn't work together and look for common ground.

I will do my level best to try find common interests.

The behavior that I want to exhibit…I want to be a congressman that my children, grandchildren, friends, and the entire district can be proud of: that's my congressman. That's Jeff Van Drew and he's trying to do what's right.

The bad behavior certainly doesn't increase our confidence in the American system. I would hope to act with honor, decency, and intelligence on behalf of the citizens of District 2," said Van Drew.

2. Van Drew's campaign focus will be?

"To speak about the issues that are so important to everyday people. The high cost of flood insurance or health insurance. The high cost of education. So many of the people that I know and meet throughout our diverse district, one characteristic that they have in common is that they are working their backs off with 2-3-4 jobs and still having a difficult time paying their mortgage, taxes and other expenses.

Medicare, Social Security, veterans’ issues. We must keep our commitment to our veterans. They have kept their commitments to us. They're willing to bleed to death for us.

They have to receive the kind of treatment and healthcare that they've earned. I don't want to hear about things such as homeless veterans, or veterans without educational opportunities. We can do better than that.

Bipartisanship. I'll be talking about that.

The need for infrastructure improvement in our area. Some of our main businesses: fishing, recreational and commercial, aquaculture, tourism. We must expand our economic base; including Eds and Meds, so that we're not relying on one industry; rather to expand

Surf Stadium: Past, Present and Future

here is nothing more exciting than a game of baseball, especially in the summertime. As a kid, my mom would take me to as many games as she could, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The smell of the concessions, baseballs being tossed around, and a backdrop of the Atlantic City skyline made any evening perfect. Surf Stadium was the place to see professional

baseball in South Jersey.

For a bit of history, Atlantic City’s first professional team was formed in 1916. The Bacharach Giants moved from Jacksonville, Florida, and had over 13 years of success in Atlantic City. The team produced star players such as Dick Redding, Oliver Marcelle and Dick Lundy.

In 1991, Atlantic City Mayor Jim Whelan announced his plan to bring baseball back to Atlantic City. That vision became a reality five years later when the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and City Council approved $15 million in funding for a new stadium. Construction broke ground shortly thereafter, and on May 20, 1998, Surf Stadium, known then as The Sandcastle, opened to the public.

Their first home game took place against the Somerset Patriots.

The seating sections were originally named after streets Atlantic City, a take on the famous Monopoly board. They were replaced by numbers a short time later.

The Atlantic City Surf saw much success during their inaugural season.

They hosted the Atlantic League AllStar Game to a winning effort and took home the League Championship, defeating the Bridgeport Bluefish three games to one. Playing in the Atlantic League, the team went up against successful teams in Somerset, Bridgeport, Newark, and Nashua.

The team also had a mascot named Splash. Within the first two years of the Sandcastle’s opening, more than

a million fans packed the stadium.

In 2001, former Phillies pitcher and Major League All-Star Mitch Williams came out of retirement and joined the Surf roster. He would play a total of seven games that season, before becoming the team’s pitching coach. Cecil Fielder, former Yankee and three time All-Star, was named General Manager for the Surf in 2007.

Aside from baseball, Surf Stadium has hosted various concerts and shows, all-day festivals and celebrity boxing matches.

Attendance remained steady in its final years, but was unable to maintain financially. On March 30, 2009, management announced that the Surf would cease operations immediately.

In recent years, the stadium has become the home facilities for Atlantic Cape Community College baseball.

There is an ongoing effort to revitalize Surf Stadium and bring professional baseball back to Atlantic City.

Frank Bolton, the former owner of the Surf baseball team, has received approval from City Council to lead the search for a possible team. If the endeavor is successful, a new team could begin playing as early as next year.

Two Local Players Selected for the 2018 MLB Draft

he 2018 MLB Draft was held from June 4th through June 6th. The draft concluded not before two area athletes were selected by major league teams.

This summer, Robert Boselli of St.

Robert Boselli John’s University, and Danny Nunan of Ocean City High School, were selected by the Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds, respectively.

Nunan was selected in the 12th round with the 361st selection in the draft.

Boselli was selected 25 rounds later, in round 37, with selection 1,099.

Nunan a pitcher, now becomes the fourth area player in the last five drafts to be selected by the Angeles.

He joins Buena’s Danny Brady, Millville’s Aaron Cox, and St. Augustine Prep’s Joe Gatto. The most notable area player selected by the Angels is Millville’s Mike Trout, who was a first round pick by the organization in 2009. Trout has become one of baseball’s best, and has won the American League MVP twice, in 2014 and 2016.

Boselli, a Ventnor resident, has been a member of the St. John’s University baseball team in New York.

This is the second college baseball team Boselli has played for as he started his college career at Mercer County Community College, in West Windsor, NJ. Boselli had an impressive early college career, where as a sophomore he batted .366 with three home-runs and 37 RBI’s. Prior to attending Mercer, Boselli played catcher at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, NJ, where he was a fouryear letter winner with the Spartans in both Baseball and Football.

Absecon Renovations to Help Alleviate Area Flooding

The grants from FEMA had been received prior to Hurricane Sandy. Engineering plans from Remington & Vernick followed soon after, then the city applied for approvals from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of

n just a handful of months, Absecon New Jersey has opened two new areas that will benefit the environment and provide recreational use for the public. The city hopes that its latest projects on Faunce Landing Road, and at the Turner Avenue Cove, will prevent localized flooding to those sections of the city.

The new recreational areas on Faunce Landing Road and Turner Avenue are giving the public a place to fish, crab, launch kayaks, and enjoy a family picnic.

Both projects have been Turner Cove in Absecon partially funded by grants from FEMA, and are designed to prevent Engineers. “We are hoping that these localized flooding. Each of the two two venues will increase the popularity renovated areas feature high walls to of the creek, especially for residents avert rising waters from the Absecon of Absecon,” Mayor Armstrong said.

“In my opinion, we in Absecon don’t take as much advantage of our location along the water as we should.”

The first location to open along Faunce Landing Road is a former marina that was demolished to make way for the renovations. The newer location on Turner Avenue. was once a swimming hole, and also featured a swimming pool and tennis courts. The swimming hole sat along Absecon Creek, and a dammed bridge was built to release water from the swimming hole into the creek when it would flood.

Eventually, the dam on the bridge was left open and water from the creek was allowed to enter the swimming hole, alienating all swimmers from it.

The pool and tennis courts were also abandoned. Crabbers and fishermen were frequent visitors to this site, but Absecon made an effort to stop trespassers on the bridge, due to the bridge’s decaying structure and safety

To promote the renovated areas, Absecon is planning to hold an event called, “Crabsecon.” The event will take place on September 15th, and feature food, a beer garden, and live music.” Mayor Armstrong is hoping that the event will help residents find these renovated venues and encourage people to visit them.

“We hope that will attract a number of families in the area, particularly from Absecon,” said Mayor Armstrong.

“And again, it just emphasises that the areas are available for our residents to use.”

“It should be a fun event, and we’re hoping a lot of people will come,” he added.

If you are remodeling or starting from the ground up, you may want to consider the following tips on how a fresh and inviting color palette can breathe life into your home.

If you are looking for a new look and feel for your shore home, consider creating a coastal inspired paint scheme, using the relaxing hues of the seashore as your muse. Cool blues, inspired by the ocean or bay, bring a tranquil and peaceful feel to your space. Refreshing green shades of sea glass and meadow grass can create a sense of harmony and renewal. Ground these colors with a neutral such as a cool gray or taupe to create a welcoming getaway for family and friends.

The colors at your doorstep can be artfully combined to create a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe perfect for your home.

s young parents, we wanted to do everything right, and the awesome proposition of raising children weighed heavy on us. We read the popular books and magazines on how to parent, as if they were instruction manuals, and as it turned out, I think we did a pretty good job. Now our "kids" which we will forever refer to them as, are 35 and 30 years of age, and our challenge has become how to be non-parents. That is not to mean abandoning them, but rather finding the line between helping and interfering. That line is fluid, ever changing, and sometimes you don't know where it is until you have crossed it and then it becomes abundantly clear.

It is especially precarious when there are grandchildren involved because then we shift back into a parenting role for them. "Why don't they have something on their feet? Are they warm enough? Do they have sunscreen on? No, this is not organic. It's okay for them to have chocolate once in a while."

We do the same thing with our adult children. "Have you done your taxes,?

Do you know your car is overdue for inspection? Are you really going out looking like that? Do you have enough money? Did you check Carfax? Do you need directions? Why don't you pick

up the phone when I call?" I have to say that my kids are pretty bright, and they must have gotten that from their mother (and their good looks from me!)

They seem to be doing quite well without our help. Most of my sage advice is greeted with an "I know, Dad." Can it be that everything I have learned over my lifetime, and that which I continue to learn, is of little value to them? The dilemma is that I don't know what is of value and what isn't, so I keep advising and let them separate the wheat from the chaff in the hope that I have supplied them with more of the wheat. I learned from my 80 year old mother that parenting never ends. I was just into my 60's and we were visiting with her. When our visit concluded, my wife and I were leaving and in a hurry, and I zipped my shirt into my jacket, jamming up the whole mess. The house was too warm, the jacket too heavy, and efforts only produced words forced through gritted teeth, sweat, and frustration.

My mother, a lifelong seamstress, asked in the most gentle way, "Here, Charles, would you like me take a look at it?" I stood there resigned and helpless, as she performed her magic, and quickly freed the zipper. At that moment, she was still parenting, and I guess we will continue as well, whether our grown up kids think they need it or not.

he Ocean City Historical Museum would like to thank the community for their support in our annual T Shirt contest.

We raised more than $1,000 dollars.

Thanks to the business sponsors’ generosity we were able to award tremendous prizes to each division. There are 4 divisions: Commercial, Comic, Creative, and Vintage. Each contestant was able to enter a shirt in each division.

The public was asked to vote as often as they liked. This contest is not just a fundraiser, it is all about getting the community involved in something fun while creating a buzz about the museum and you creating your own history.

The Challenge is Good

f it doesn’t challenge you, it’s not going to change you. I firmly believe in this saying because, it is true on so many levels. Stepping out of your comfort zone, especially with physical activity can make a huge impact on results and give you self confidence. “Can’t” is such a bad

word to me. Why can’t you? I have seen several of my clients, new to the fitness world, come into my gym and say they “can’t” do something. Whether it’s a box jump, push up, or pull-up, my initial response to this is,”Well, have you ever done any of these on your own?” Usually, the answer is no.

Now is the time to start. Yes, you can do it. You can do anything you put your mind to. You need to challenge yourself, make a goal, and get to it.

Step out of your usual fitness routine and do something new! Do deadhangs and negatives on the pull-up bars for a few weeks and that will strengthen you. Can’t do a full minute plank? A little everyday will help build that core strength until you can hold it for a minute. Stuck in the 5lb weight zone and afraid to go up a size because you don’t want to get too “muscular”? Do it!

Your body plateaus and it will get used to the daily activity that you do.

You need to change it up and you will see a change. At Genfitness, I often hear my fitfam say “ I feel so out of shape”, when they begin. To me, that

is a great thing to hear! It means that I am challenging your body, and having you do things that you wouldn’t normally do, to confuse your muscles.

This will create optimum results. By confusing your muscles and switching everything up, you are training more in a shorter period of time.

No one wants to spend hours in the gym anymore. You want to get the most effective workout safely, and in a timely manner. You’re body is an adaptive machine. When you step out of that comfort zone and challenge yourself, your body adapts. Your muscles are working differently, blood is flowing more, and the muscles are confused, which is the most effective way of losing fat and building muscle.

Do something this week to challenge yourself. If you run 2 miles consistently every day, add that extra half mile, and some intervals with sprints to your run. If you’ve been using the same size free weight, do one set with a heavier weight. If you’ve never done a box jump, start with some step ups, and work your way up from there!

You will see a difference in yourself, and your body will too. We at Genfitness are always challenging each other and boosting our teammates up when they think they can’t. But they can. It’s ok to be uncomfortable sometimes, and stepping out of the box will show you changes. Challenge yourselves South Jersey. We got this, Jersey strong!

year old, M a r c o Panting of Pleasantville, NJ is a local star to watch. Marco is a young man on a mission to create a better future.

He moved to the United States from Honduras when he was just three years old. After his father left him and his mom, they found themselves living in the U.S. impoverished and homeless.

Sleeping on church floors and experiencing life at the darkest of times is what helps Marco to appreciate and celebrate the goodness that life has to offer today.

Now not only do him and his mom live in a home together but Marco has used his strengths and blessings to make a positive impact on the world around him.

As a 2018 graduate of Charter Tech High School, Marco is a young influencer and entrepreneur. He is the owner of Mr Panting Productions, a business that offers photography, video, and multiple sources of media production. He also hosts the radio Show, Teens With Dreams where he features other young motivators in an effort to inspire teens to live their best lives. Marco’s goal with Teens with Dreams is to show other teenagers that they are capable of so much more and that they can grow beyond their circumstances. He uses his life experiences along with the stories of

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Atlantic and Cape May Counties is once again taking fundraising to new heights! On June 22nd we’ll kick off our 2-day event on the 22nd as 11 adventurers with a heart for children go over the side of the Sheraton Hotel in Atlantic City.

Participants will rappel 175 ft from the Hotel’s Presidential Suite to the ground below.

The rappellers will make their decent in one of three time slots. Here’s the lineup for the afternoon…

Mentalist and Illusionist, Wayne Hoffman 3pm-4pm: Bride-to-be Terri Cressey is rappelling in a wedding dress alongside her wedding DJ, Ken Schaffer who will be donning a tuxedo (Ken is affiliated with WIBG Radio and Distinct Events) Also rappelling at this time is SNJ Today’s resident forecaster, Nor’Easter Nick (Nick Pitman) This fundraiser not only provides needed funds for creating and supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters’ one-to-one mentoring relationships, but also builds awareness for the cause. There over 100 children on the waiting list and the goal is to see these children matched, but increased funding is needed to make that happen.

Saturday, June 23rd is the main event day.

They are expecting over 60 rappellers from 9am-2pm. These participants have each raised a minimum of $1,000 to secure their spot on the ropes and support the children.

A New Approach to Basketball

outh in Atlantic County have heard the good news: there is a place for them in church if they want it. Youthworks.com, an organization that is dedicated to organizing mission trips for young Christians has published on their website that: “Young Americans are attempting to learn faithfulness in a rapidly changing post-Christian culture where they are rethinking the institutions—like church—that arbitrate life. The ubiquity and onslaught of information, and competing worldviews, as well as a greater resistance to the gospel among their peers make it harder for young people to find meaning in a complex culture.” Therefore, churches across the country, and many churches in Atlantic County, are making it known to today’s youth that there is a place for them in church, and it’s a place where they are free to be themselves and do the things they love to do.

In March of 2018, I was invited by Pastor Jonathan Gonzales to join the youth ministry team at Praise Tabernacle which is located at 2235 Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township. Gonzalez, 32, a resident of Galloway, has been cultivating an environment at Praise Tabernacle where any teen can come and feel comfortable and safe. Friday nights at the Tabernacle show just what that looks like, and I was pleasantly surprised by how relevant this church group is for youth, on my first night as a team member.

Around 6:00pm on Friday nights, students start arriving to Gonzales’s youth group. Even though the actual biblical service doesn’t start until 8:00pm, they come to play basketball. Pastor Gonzalez realized early on that most kids were looking for community, a place where they could have good, clean fun without the worries of

leaders come early to hang out with the kids, and because of the positive role models they represent on the court, many kids stay and are attentive during the service as they wind down from their two-hour basketball workout.

The thing is, Youthworks.com also cites on their website that: “Millennials are leaving the church. Nearly six in ten (59%) young people who grow up in Christian churches end up walking away, and the unchurched

segment among millennials has increased in the last decade from 44% to 52%, mirroring a larger cultural trend away from churchgoing in America. When asked what has helped their faith grow, “church” does not make even the top 10 factors.” If basketball can be used as a way to encourage today’s youth to not only allow themselves to find community, but to also bring them to youth group where they have the opportunity to meet kids just like them, find encouragement from a totally rad pastor like Jonathan Gonzalez, and get a glimpse of Christ’s love, then maybe Praise Tabernacle has a good thing going.

If you know a youth between 6th grade and 12th grade who may be interested in attending youth group at Praise Tabernacle in Egg Harbor Township, we invite them to come out and spend a Friday with us.

Basketball starts at 6:00pm, service is at 8:00pm, and we wrap things up at 9:00pm.

getting into trouble. Therefore, basketball quickly became part of the vision of what Friday nights would look like for Praise Tabernacle’s youth group. After surveying what the kids were most interested in, basketball was hands down the most popular activity.

So, he figured, why not put a few youth leaders out on the court to referee, play, and spend time getting to know Atlantic County’s kids?

Week after week more kids started showing up for youth group, most attending mainly for the basketball that happens before the service. Young boys were bringing their school friends so they could ball together on the courts outside of the youth room, and weekly we see new faces show up to play. We are lucky to have this type of program available to us. The basketball courts are there at the church, the youth

The contestant who collects the most donations, which this year will benefit the OCHS After Prom Party, Sunshine Foundation and Ocean City Food Cupboard, will be crowned Wednesday, July 25th at 7:30 PM on the stage at the O.C. Tabernacle. Contestants will parade in convertibles along the Boardwalk from 5th to 14th St. prior to the crowning. The queen and her court along with all contestants will reign over the city's Night in Venice boat parade on Saturday, July 28th.

The Batsto Book Shop

atsto Village is a national treasure. It is a living piece of history – a jewel preserved and maintained to allow visitors to experience what it was like to live in simpler times. The village has received praise and recognition for its authenticity and it is included in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

There are countless articles detailing the reasons why tourists and South Jersey residents should visit Batsto in Burlington County. Another article like this would be unnecessary, so I haven’t written one.

Instead, I would like to discuss one of Batsto’s quieter attractions: the Museum Shop. The shop, at first glance, is a standard addition you would expect to find at any historic site.

After all, there are the stuffed ani-

mals everywhere, handmade trinkets, and dime-store candies. They even carry local honey and handmade, fairtrade scarves.

If you make it passed all these things – there is something greater to see.

The wall of books directly to the right of the shop is a local historian’s dream and a bibliophile’s bank-breaker. The subjects of these neatly stacked tomes range everywhere from cooking to history, herpetology to botany, astronomy to photography, and much, much more. As you peruse the titles, you will find John McPhee’s regional classic “The Pine Barrens”

and Arthur D. Pierce’s “Iron In the Pines.” In addition to these standards,

there are rarer finds,works long out-of-print: “Smugglers’ Woods,”“Forgotten Towns of Southern New Jersey,”and “Whispers in the Pines.”

There are also beautiful hardback copies of John E. Pierce’s “Heart of the Pines” – a massive, 904-page volume containing virtually everything there is to know about South Jersey’s past.

Two comfy leather chairssit before this bastion of books – an open invitation for anyone to sit and stay awhile.

The shop’s caretaker – a woman named Cindy – was able to share a few words with me between assisting visitors. I asked her one question – something I’d been pondering from the first time I visited this sanctuary: who could possibly be so well read, so knowledgeable, so equipped to create such a perfect selection? Did Howard Bloom take the time out of his busy schedule to cobble together this treasure trove?

Cindy simply said, “Her name is Jeanie Ford. She now works for the Southern Region Office.”

Now, I don’t know who this Jeanie Ford is, but I’ll tell you one thing – she deserves a medal sent directly from the State Department. She has cultivated a definitive collection, something that needs to be seen to be believed.

Don’t believe me? Fair enough.

Next time you’re looking for something to do on your day off, take a ride out to Batsto. Tour the village, admire its authenticity, and amble through the museum. When you’re finished, be sure to stop in the museum shop and spend some time with the book collection.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and maybe even bring a cup of coffee – you could be there a while.
