Field of Dreams Celebrates 15 Years All invited to anniversary event

T

he South Jersey Field of Dreams will commemorate its 15th anniversary with a celebration for the entire community on Sunday May 20th.

Since 2003, the South Jersey Field of Dreams has been providing a place for special athletes to play baseball. Today, three hundred athletes from seven counties in New Jersey participate in a baseball league that is all inclusive and free to everyone. The complex includes a picnic area, a playground, miniature golf course, and a bike and walking path with eight fitness stations.

The anniversary celebration is from 9am – 4pm and kicks off with the “Coach Greg Reid Memorial Home Run Derby. There is a $15 entry fee and prizes will be awarded to both male and female winner.

The morning will also feature a 1.5 mile “Fun Run and Walk” at 10am.

A $15 registration fee includes a

commemorative T-shirt and medal for all runners. The walk is free.

A nine-hole miniature golf tournament at “The Burrows” begins at 10am.

Registration deadline is 9:15am and there is a $15 entry fee.

Top finishers will receive a foursome to Renault Winery’s Vineyard Golf.

Other activities include a mascot baseball game featuring “Goodwin” the South Jersey Field of Dreams’ official mascot and several of his furry friends, a remote-controlled track with NASCAR style cars, a remote-controlled model “air show” and a classic antique car show.

ou never really understand just how much your mother loves you until that moment when you become a parent yourself. When I was little, my mom was my everything. Her attention and approval were prized jewels that I sought in all I did.

One spring day, I decided to surprise my mom with some beautiful flowers. As an eight year old, I had to get creative about where I “shopped" for those flowers. I had learned from experience, that picking from the neighbors’ garden, especially Mrs. Chancler’s , was a bad idea. While walking down the alley with my cousin that afternoon,I spotted the perfect place. It was a dumpster behind a funeral home, down the street and it was overflowing with beautiful flowers.

“Mom will be thrilled,” I exclaimed. My younger cousin agreed.

We picked beautiful bouquets for each of our moms. But when we presented our gifts, a look of deep concern arose on our moms’ faces.

I suppose it was the “In memory of” of ribbon that tipped her off.

In the end, everyone had a good laugh and I got clear instructions to never do that again. Still... I think my mom appreciated the thought.

For many years afterwards though, I pushed my mom away, in some attempt to find my own independence. Everything she said or did irritated me and I was sure she knew absolutely nothing about modern life in the 80’s. She was outdated in my eyes by the age of 40. Ironically though, she knew everything again and was my best friend by the time I turned 40.

It wasn't until my first child and then the twins were born that I saw her with different eyes. I saw how very willing she was to help me..anytime, anyway. I saw how important I was to her and the million ways she had shown me that over all the years.

Motherhood can be a thankless job. My mom was a good worker bee. She cooked and cleaned, and shuttled me around with little to no complaining. I’m sure I was not as gracious about it. And it wasn't until my own little girls grew and no longer wanted to hang out with mom, that I realized how I had hurt

It's incredible how much the birth of one tiny human can change us instantly. A very pure, protective and unconditional love just seems to pour out of us. A mom's love is different. There is no jealousy or ulterior motives. A mom wants what is best for her child, always.

I'm lucky to still have my mom. I watched the pain my husband and my friends have endured as they lost their mothers. With middle age comes a great concern for the health and sometimes loss of our aging parents. Although its it's been 6 years since we lost Bob's mom to pancreatic cancer, we think about her and miss her everyday.

Whether you are a mom, a mom to be, a grandmother or even a great grandmother, we at Shore Local celebrate you and wish you a beautiful Mother's Day!

Now that the Winter chill is finally over, we can look forward to some really nice spring weather, right? Absolutely. I'm so used to saying "Well, that may not be the case." But not this time. I'm happy to report that the coolest weather we will see from this point forward is highs in the upper 60s. Great news! I'm not going to do a long range forecast for this issue, but rather teach you something that many true locals know, but those who may be new to the area do not. Our temperatures in the Spring season are highly dependent on exactly what the wind does. Wind direction will make or break a beach day. It also depends on where you're situated. Atlantic County beaches tend to be cooler this time of the year than Cape May County beaches.

Why does that make sense?

Because typically speaking this time of the year we get the majority of our wind to come out of the southwest. Atlantic County beaches jet out into the water farther than the Cape May County counterparts.

Wind is able to skirt across the cooler water and bring cooler temps from Brigantine to Longport. With the Cape beaches tucked in closer, you'll often find that they are in some cases 10+ degrees warmer than Atlantic County beaches. Interestingly, there are three "culprit" areas I look at when forecasting Spring temps that are impacted by a SW wind - Atlantic County beaches, Cape May itself and Southern Cumberland County. A west wind allows everyone to warm up evenly due to no oceanic influence.

Quick forecast: Mother's Day weekend looks great. Upper 70s or lower 80s with partly sunny skies.

Old store on bike path becomes new again

t was fate,” says Jessica Schmidt. She was sitting on a bench along the bike path in Linwood with her fiance, Chris Maher, when she noticed the For Sale sign. Jess and Chris lived only a few blocks away and frequently enjoyed walking their dogs along the path. Chris shared his stories of running in and out of the shop as a child, growing up in Linwood. The building was a piece of history waiting to be restored and brought back to life. That is exactly what Schmidt

set out to do.

Saving the Diamondback Terrapins

I

t’s that time of year again. The diamondback terrapins are making their appearance soon, and work is already underway to ensure their safety thanks to the help of community members and local college students. This past Saturday, the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project held its annual installation day program along the Margate Causeway. For four hours, volunteers and students laid the groundwork for new pipe tubing, repaired existing tubes and cleared the surrounding marsh.

The original conception of the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project can be traced back to the mid-1990s, when a group of citizen volunteers became concerned about the number of turtle fatalities along the Margate Causeway. Thanks to the help of Margate residents Lisa and Don Doherty, the project was launched in 2007, and has grown into a grassroots campaign to safeguard the terrapin’s survival and safety. Kline Construction provided assistance and traffic control. This

collaborative effort has significantly reduced terrapin road kill.

Before the terrapin’s re-appearance, volunteers begin to position new half-pipe tubing. This barrier deters the turtles from crossing into speeding traffic. According to collected data, the constantly improved tubing appears to work. Last year, the Rescue Project reported on 63 fatalities, down from a record 145 deaths in years past.

If you should spot a turtle trying to cross the road, make sure to stop on the shoulder if it’s safe to do so, carefully pick up the turtle firmly by the sides of its shell, and place it in the direction it was going in a safe, grassy area. If the roadway has barriers, Kim recommends placing them safely over the barriers. All the extra hands from our volunteers and concerned citizens are needed to help rescue and save our local terrapins.

We should all do our part to help our local wildlife. If you should see turtle eggs along the Causeway, Kim recommends contacting the Rescue Project. Please be sure to include your location so they can locate and transport the eggs to the Wetlands Institute or Stockton University’s facilities so they can be incubated.

Additionally, St John regularly brings her therapy dogs to Heart of Surfing, a recreational program for children with special needs. It was a perfect fit and both Hobie and Wesley have attended many of their recreational activities, offering their calming presence, unconditional love and cuddles to all.

Sadly Hobie passed suddenly ar the age of nine. St John now has two retrievers, Wesley and Sheamus, who are certified with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, a volunteer-based organization that started in Cheyenne, Wyoming, that supports more than 11,000 dogs and handlers throughout North America. Their job is to provide registration, insurance, support and training to their members, who volunteer in various pet therapy programs.

Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection in hospitals, schools and nursing homes. In many cases, they can provide stress relief. Colleges have allowed handlers to bring therapy dogs on campus the week before final exams. The interaction between the specialty trained dogs and students allows allowing the much needed de-stress and reduction of anxiety.

Jackie volunteers most of her

time at the elementary school, understanding just how important therapy dogs can be. She says whenever one of the kids is having a bad day, Wesley knows and will look up and stare at them. “Therapy dogs are great stress relievers. They understand a lot more than people think they do.” That certainly seems to be true, especially in Wesley’s case.

In order to certify your dog as a potential therapy dog, handlers must first register their information online, which is followed by the testing period. Here, the tester/observer will record the dog’s manners and handler’s skills. You and your dog will then go through a short series of evaluations to oversee the dog’s interaction to strangers .

Once the assessment is complete and the dog has

been cleared for service, the handler can schedule a time to go out into the community and share their furry friend.

There is a major difference between a therapy dog and a service dog. Service dogs provide assistance to those with disabilities and are meant to work specifically to their owner or handler’s needs. You will commonly see service dogs wearing a bandana or a vest to signify that they have been trained. Seeing eye dogs are a notable example of a service dog that provides vision for the owner.

Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend. They play an ever important role in many people's lives.

There is a special bond between humans and animals that can change a person’s life in so many ways. A simple smile wag of the tail is all it takes to make someone’s day just a little brighter.

arm Critter Haven is a 3.2 acre oasis in Egg Harbor Township, tucked off Ivins Avenue, not far from the busy Black Horse Pike. It is a haven for rescued animals under the care of three generations.

named Pecky. As we walked on through meadows and patches of trees, we saw 6 ponies, pot bellied pigs, a alpaca and a cow named Betsy May. Two of the ponies were separated from the others in a corral. Heather explained they had Laminitis. If they ingested the sugars in grass they would develop inflammed, painful joints. On a restricted diet though they are fine.

Although Sandy, Heather's mom has been rescuing animals for twenty plus years, they only recently registered Farm Critter Haven as a business. Just last month they received their non profit charity status.

The Greater AC Chamber connects State, City and Business at Luncheon

hrough a joint effort of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber’s Advocacy and Member Experience Committees the Chamber hosted a State of the City luncheon May 9th at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

After a brief introduction by Chamber President Joe Kelly, Lori Herndon, President & CEO of Atlanticare Introduced Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver to the nearly 400 members of the audience that included a mix of business owners, corporate repre-

sentatives and community members.

The Lieutenant Governor shared a brief history of Atlantic City, going all the way back to the City’s founding.

She talked about the fact that Atlantic City back then was referred to as “The Playground”. She mentioned the importance of the railroads and visitors willingness to travel.

Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver then reminded us that back then there were all of the top brands of the day in Atlantic City. She also mentioned with excitement all the great development

that was happening in the City and how the state was and is committed to its future saying “If Atlantic City does not succeed then the State of New Jersey does not succeed”. She talked passionately about creating an Atlantic City we all want to see, while reminding the engaged crowd how excited everyone was about June 28th, 2018. That is the day two Atlantic City properties, Hard Rock and Ocean Resort, are scheduled to open. Lieutenant Governor Oliver also stressed the importance of providing residents and the region training, jobs and healthcare while reminding us the nearly 10,000 children in Atlantic City must be afforded access to opportunity. Before congratulating and introducing Mayor Frank Gilliam, the Lieutenant Governor ended her speech saying “We are all in with the local Administration in Atlantic City”.

Mayor Frank Gilliam took the stage and shared an informative musically infused digital presentation focusing on the “Rebirth” of Atlantic City that started with a reminder of how the perception of Atlantic City was not good after multiple gaming properties closed. He addressed mitigating problems and steps that were taken to confront pressing needs as well as the state’s work and assistance to do so.

He talked about the positive reaction to these steps that included all the development and investment we are seeing today in Atlantic City with Stockton University, South Jersey Gas as part of Devco AC’s Gateway Project, Steel Pier’s Observation Wheel, Tennessee Green and the Tennessee Avenue Development Project, New Housing and of course the Hard Rock and Ocean Resort opening this June.

Mayor Gillian also commended the arts and cultural work being done in the city and how the City has embraced the 48 Blocks initiative. He also talked about sustainability as well as resiliency and infrastructure. Specifically the success Atlantic City has achieved in all three areas including grant awards and plans to continue the work already done to connect the boardwalk to Gardner’s Basin. The legalization of cannabis was also talked about with Mayor Gillian presenting the benefits the City could realize as part of the economic boost it could potentially bring. Finally, the Mayor mentioned the “Opportunity Zones” that would be created within Atlantic City. Mayor Gillian mentioned it was another “game changer” and that it would help spark development however specific details of what that Federal designation means were not provided.

Keeping with his musically infused presentation theme the Mayor ended his 2018 State of the City by saying “We are working in concert with the State.”

oe Molineaux is the former Director of The Small Business Development Center at Stockton University. Joe began directing the SBDC program for Rutgers University in 2000. In 2003, he was instrumental in bringing the NJSBDC to Stockton College. For more than fifteen years, the Small Business Development Center has been an active part of Stockton’s community and business outreach.

Through high quality counseling and training, Joe Molineaux led the SBDC at Stockton by assisting existing businesses and start-ups throughout Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland Counties. From business plans to packaging financial information for possible funding, the Center, under Joe’s direction became a recognized valuable resource for small businesses in our region.

Each year the SBDC at Stockton counseled approximately 500 existing and aspiring business owners

ay 2018 not only marks my return to business column writing with an awesome opportunity in Shore Local, it also marks the launch of the new television program “South Jersey Business with Joe Molineaux”.

When I pitched the show to the Stockton University Team last year I had no idea it would become the program that is now airing on The Stockton Channel on Comcast Channel 9.

I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to President Harvey Kesselman for his encouragement when I first brought up the idea of a program focusing on educating the business community and potential entrepreneurs in what I hoped was an entertaining offering. The support that the Dean of Arts and Humanities Lisa Honaker, as well as each of the individuals that worked to help create the show, has shown has been nothing short of amazing.

There was such a tremendous learning curve to take over a dozen years of radio experience, content development and delivery including a career of consulting, public speaking and training and fit it into a half hour of television. When you have a talented and seasoned Director like Stockton’s Michael Zubrzycki and two semesters full of talented Stockton Communication Interns it helped to make the “work” that went into every segment that much easier. The time and energy everyone put into each

show is appreciated.

You will be reading about upcoming guests in every issue of Shore Local and of course seeing the shows as they premiere each week on The Stockton Channel Comcast Channel 9, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 PM and again Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 AM. Great Opportunity Key To Making US Great

As a state, is it how competitive we are with other states based on similar measurements like employment, commerce and taxes? As towns and cities is it our school rankings and real estate values? And what is it that makes an individual great?

catchy, easy to remember phrase that looks good on hats and t-shirts, that is broadcast, repeated and tweeted across the nation and all over the world has now set the tone and the extremely high expectations for the next four years. Before we can “Make America Great Again”, it may be a good idea to determine how great or perhaps how not so great we are today.

What are the criteria for measuring our collective and individual “greatness”? As a country, is it as simple as looking at our ranking with regard to global economic indicators? Is our place in the world solely dependent on our gross domestic products, our manufacturing, our trade deficits, our collective wealth, our employment

If it was that simple, specifically as it relates to our country and those areas of measurement were at the heart of why we question our greatness, then the answer would be simple. We would work on fixing those areas to make us great. However it is not that simple.

Spending time and resources on being more competitive in the world is a

good thing but that alone will not make us great.

Although many decisions made by individuals we have elected, as well as individuals in key decision making positions, have had some negative affect on our global rankings in the areas mentioned above as well as many others, the one area that we do not officially measure or measure correctly is the real opportunity our country provides the citizens of our nation. Or is it our “great” nation? Our United States of America is great.

Over and over again we see individuals, groups, neighborhoods, small towns and cities overcome tremendous odds or obstacles to be successful and to become great. This only occurs because great opportunity exists to allow those that want to make themselves, their family, or where they live and work great. Those that reach a measurable level of success, whether they are individuals or groups, work to be great. They take advantage of every opportunity, identify every resource, and do what is necessary to be great.

This includes making tough decisions

or pushing beyond what is commonly considered the way things are done.

It is important that we do not simply accept the way things have always been done. It is also critically important that we do not accept someone else’s measurement of what makes us great.

Greatness begins with identifying an opportunity or many opportunities and working to turn that opportunity into something bigger, better and brighter…. something great. How can we make it happen?

Unfortunately, we are not given the answers on how to make us great.

The next question to ask ourselves is “What are we, as individuals and groups, given the opportunity to work towards greatness every day, doing to make ourselves, our neighborhoods, our communities, our region, our state and our nation great?”

ood additives have been used for centuries to enhance the appearance and flavor of food and prolong shelf life.

However, do these food additives really “add” any value to your food?

Food additives find their way into our foods to help ease processing, packaging, and storage, but how do we know which food additives are in that box of macaroni and cheese, and why does it have such a long shelf life?

A typical American household spends about 90 percent of their food budget on processed foods and in doing so they get exposed to a plethora of artificial food additives, many of which can have serious consequences to your health.

Aspartame, more popularly known as Nutrasweet and Equal, is found in foods labeled "diet" or "sugar-free". Aspartame is believed to be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of adverse reactions than all other foods and food additives combined. Aspartame is not your friend. Aspartame is a neurotoxin and carcinogen. Known to erode intelligence and affect short-term memory, the components of this toxic sweetener may lead to a wide variety of ailments including brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness, headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines and seizures. Acesulfame-K, a relatively new artificial sweetener found in baking goods, gum and gelatin, has not been thoroughly tested and has been linked to kidney tumors.

Found in diet or sugar-free sodas, diet coke, coke zero, jello (and other gelatins), desserts, sugar-free gum, drink mixes, baking goods, table top sweeteners, cereal, breath mints, pudding, kool-aid, ice tea, chewable vitamins, toothpaste.

High Fructose High fructose corn syrup is a highly-refined artificial sweetener which has become the number one source of calories in America. It is found in almost all processed foods. HFCS packs on the pounds faster than any other ingredient, increases your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, and contributes to the development of diabetes and tissue damage, among other harmful effects.

Found in most processed foods, bread, candy, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, canned vegetables, cereals.

Monosodium Glutamate MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and many restaurant foods. MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of damage or

death. Studies show that regular consumption of MSG may result in adverse side effects which include depression, disorientation, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, and obesity. MSG affects the neurological pathways of the brain and disengages the "I'm full" function which explains the effects of weight gain.

Found in Chinese food (what I call Chinese Restaurant Syndrome ) many snacks, chips, cookies, seasonings, most Campbell Soup products, frozen dinners and lunch meats.

Trans Fat Trans fat is used to enhance and extend the shelf life of food products and is among the most dangerous substances that you can consume.

Found in deep-fried fast foods and certain processed foods made with margarine or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, trans fats are formed by a process called hydrogenation. Numerous studies show that trans fat increase LDL cholesterol levels while decreasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, increases the risk of heart attacks, heart disease, and strokes, and contributes to increased inflammation, diabetes, and other health problems. Oils and fat are now forbidden on the Danish market if they contain trans fatty acids exceeding 2 per cent, a move that effectively bans partially hydrogenated oils. Found in margarine, chips and crackers, baked goods, fast foods.

Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite Sodium nitrate (or sodium nitrite) is used as a preservative, coloring, and flavoring in bacon, ham, hot dogs, lunch meats, corned beef, smoked fish and other processed meats. This ingredient, which sounds harmless, is actually highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. There, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds that enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc with a number of internal organs: the liver and pancreas in particular. Sodium nitrite is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient, and the USDA actually tried to ban this additive in the 1970's but was vetoed by food manufacturers who complained they had no alternative for preserving packaged meat products. Why does the industry still use it?

Simple: this chemical just happens to turn meats bright red. It's actually a color fixer, and it makes old, dead meats appear fresh and vibrant.

Found in hotdogs, bacon, ham, lunch meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat.

Common Food Dyes Studies show that artificial colorings which are found in soda, fruit juices, and salad dressings, may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. Animal studies have linked some food colorings to cancer.

Saturday, May 12, on the beach at Ninth Street. Martin Z. Mollusk has successfully predicted an early summer every year for more than four decades (sometimes, of course, with the creative use of flashlights by his handlers). Special guest for Martin Z. Mollusk Day will be former Philadelphia Eagles long-snapper Jon Dorenbos, who has impressed the world with his magic performances.

Dorenbos may have a few tricks up his sleeve for all those who will be cheering for an early summer.

Saturday morning’s program will include a musical performance by the Ocean City Intermediate School Choir and the presence of the Martin Z. Mollusk balloon, an inflated likeness of Ocean City’s beloved mascot. The winners of the 2018 Martin Z. Mollusk Coloring Contest – including Lana Clevenger, Lillianna Amoroso, Isabella Baron and Edith Heywood – will be honored and their artwork unveiled to the public.

Dorenbos will return to the Ocean City Music Pier at 8 p.m. Saturday for a sold-out magic show. In the fall of 2016, Dorenbos impressed the judges of "America's Got Talent" with his mind-blowing magic and uplifting stories. He started practicing magic at the age of 12 after a family tragedy tore his family apart. His show mixes stories from his difficult childhood and successful football career with comedy and magic.

Make-Ahead Mother’s Day Brunch Recipes

s you may have read in my Mom’s Vibe column, every year I look forward to dinner on Mother’s Day because I don’t have to make it! My husband makes the most delicious dinner, usually on the grill, while I sit back, relax and don’t lift a finger.

Brunch is another story. I usually make brunch for my mother and mother-in-law. Since brunch is one of my favorite meals, I don’t mind cooking this meal. I usually prepare some make-ahead dishes so that all I have to do is pop something in the oven and send my husband out for fresh bagels. If you will be making brunch this Mother’s Day, here are some easy ideas.

Make your own vegetable and fruit cream cheeses. This is something that my kids love helping with. I buy plain whipped cream cheese and then we mix in what we like. For sweet mixins, we usually go with strawberries or blueberries along with a touch of honey.

Mix that in a food processor or with a handheld mixer for about a minute. For savory mix-ins we usually choose chopped carrots, chopped scallions along with some salt and garlic powder.

I love family recipes. To me, they are so special because they are passed down and associated with memories. One of my favorite family recipes that my mom passed down is her blintz soufflé. This is one of the easiest and most delicious brunch recipes because it uses frozen fruit blintzes that you layer in a dish and top with a sour cream and cream mixture. It gets baked for about 45 minutes and when it comes out, everyone will be lined up for a piece.

The only thing better than potatoes or waffles is hash brown waffles! I recently created a recipe for spinach and feta hash brown waffles that are absolutely delicious. The beauty of these waffles is that you use pre-shredded potatoes which cuts down the prep time significantly.

These are a great make-ahead dish

because they reheat very nicely. If you don’t like spinach or feta, you could swap out those ingredients for whatever pleases you such as broccoli and cheddar. This is also a fun recipe for kids to help with because they love using the waffle iron.

You really can’t go wrong with French toast. I have a delicious recipe for gingerbread French toast on my blog along with other easy recipes like leek and goat cheese tart, pumpkin waffle sandwiches and strawberry muffins. I hope that your Mother’s Day is filled with good food, appreciation and relaxation. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing mothers who do so much!

Perfect for Brunch Blintz Souffle Ingredients

10 -12 blintzes, defrosted (cheese or fruit-filled) ▶4 ▶ eggs, ▶beaten ▶ 1.5 cups light sour cream ▶1/4 ▶ cup granulated sugar ▶1/4 ▶ teaspoon salt ▶1 ▶ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Spray an 8-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Arrange blintzes in dish. I was able to fit 10 blintzes in mine. In a mixing bowl combine eggs, sour cream, sugar, salt and vanilla. Pour over blintzes and cook for 45 minutes to an hour, until top is brown and bubbly. Let cool slightly and serve.

irst, let's say THANK YOU, to all of our military for the hard work and dedication you give when you serve.

Meet one of our newest Marines, Galloway Township resident, India Cecilia Villanueva. India is a graduate of Absegami High School and has been thinking about enlisting in the military since then.

You may recognize her as a model she has graced the stages of Atlantic City Fashion Week and N.Y. Fashion Week.

India attended ACCC and then tried her hand at a local beauty school where she graduated with flying colors. She then took a job as a retail associate, became a personal trainer and studied dance, martial arts.According to India, she still felt lost in her life.

Unbeknownst to her family, she enlisted as a Marine for a four year term.

When she sat her family down to discuss it with them, they were extremely supportive of her decision. When I spoke with India, she said this was the best decision she ever made.

She shared stories of the grueling life at boot camp and some of the things she became accustomed to . One of her favorite stories to share was that of "box chow.” When they were first introduced to box chow it was not that interesting.

Your lunch in a box...everything in one box with a cookie underneath. It wasn't long before box chow became something that was comforting and welcomed. The story about it was interesting. Hard to imagine some of the other stories, gas masks, grueling drills, staying up long hours and working hard on little sleep.... all of that weighs on a new Marine.

The ultimate fulfillment was seeing her family on "Family Day" during the graduation

ceremonies held at Parris Island, South Carolina. India is now back in training and is looking forward to her schooling to become an air traffic controller.

Upon coming home for 10 days, she continued to attend church and fulfill obligations expected of a United States Marine. It was just a brief leave until the next step. I love the story about her attending a local restaurant after church and all the people in the restaurant offering to pay for her breakfast.

Military life is a huge commitment, but it can open many doors. It also shows honor to serve one's Country in that respect. It is a scary time yet a rewarding time in reflection.

I've known India for many years and I'm extremely proud of her as I know her family and friends are as well. She is not sure what the future will hold for her in military life after four years, yet for now, she is ready to learn and grow as a

United States Marine. She will be home again for a short time later this summer so if you see her on the street, make sure to say hello to our newest Marine, India Villanueva. Congratulations!

Golfing for Gilda’s Annual Golf Tournament Gives Back to Those with Cancer

ach year in our region, cancer touches thousands of men, women and children. Its impact can be devastating to the individual and their family. At Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, individuals and families are receiving the information, guidance, laughter, and most importantly, the support they need to live their lives with cancer, at no cost. But with no costs involved comes a great need for outside financial support.

In 2013, the Staff at Harbor Pines Golf Club saw a local neighbor in need and decided to lend a helping hand and the Golf for Gilda’s Tournament was created.

In an effort to offer hope and help make a tremendous difference in the local community, Harbor Pines Employees plan and execute an annual golf tournament, where 100 percent of the proceeds go to Gilda’s Club South Jersey. “This golf event is very special in our hearts” said Debbie Stevenson, Director of Sales and Marketing and Gilda’s Club member.

“So many in our team here were touched by cancer, either personally or a loved one. We wanted to use our knowledge

and resources to do something great and give back to our community. We are so glad to have kept it going for a 5th straight year.”

The 5th Annual Golf for Gilda’s Charity Tournament will again take place at Harbor Pines Golf Club on Thursday May 24, 2018.

It will be a day filled with great golf, great food, and great friends. The day begins with a BBQ luncheon at 12noon. Golfers tee off for a shotgun scramble at 1pm and enjoy 18 holes of championship-style golf featuring various contests and chances to win. Following golf, the party continues with a beautiful hot buffet dinner, silent auction, and lots of prizes and surprises.

Come for the golf or the dinner and auction only. Either way is the perfect start to your Memorial Day Weekend.

Gilda’s Club was named in honor of comedian Gilda Radner who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986. Gilda believed that all people with cancer and their families and friends should have free access to social and emotional support.

She wished for a place where people could visit to cry, laugh, scream, and share fears

and frustrations with others like them.

After she died in 1989, her husband, Gene Wilder, vowed to make her vision a reality and the first Gilda’s Club opened its doors in NYC in 1995.

Gilda’s Club South Jersey offers support groups, lectures, workshops and social events in a warm and welcoming home-like setting. The people of South Jersey are truly blessed that Gilda’s exuberant spirit lives on in this unique program, where members can join with other “experts” living with cancer to give and receive the benefits of love and laughter. All ages are welcome with special programs for children and teens. The main clubhouse, located in Linwood, NJ, with a

satellite office in AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute in EHT. All programs are free of charge.

The Legacy We Leave

here is an assault in our country and the consequences of that assault have far reaching implications. I’m not talking about guns, terrorism, or political infighting. It’s an assault that has been

coming for some time now. Much like the frog placed in a cool pot on the stove; the heat is slowly applied and by the time the frog realizes, it’s too hot to survive, it’s too late to jump out.

It’s the assault on the family.

I realize we are long past the days of Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver and Happy Days. Today’s family can and often does look a whole lot different then it did even 30 years ago. The days of a mom and dad plus the 3.5 children (as the statistics tell us) are not as prevalent has they once were. Single parents, children moving back and forth between

different homes because of break ups and divorce. In our culture today we see any combination of situations you can imagine.

I probably have a different point of view than some of you reading this column on what is the best version of “family” that we can hope for. I realize that and I’m not about to impose my views on you. But I do know this. Even with our differences, there are certain fundamental steps I believe we can all take to strengthen our families no matter what they look like. We can start with three steps we could all take that would have a dramatic impact on our children, their outlook on themselves and their world, their future and us as parents.

Stability and structure matter. How that takes shape can vary. But despite what your children may tell you, they want structure, accountability and predictability. It’s helps keep them grounded.

Time spent is critical. Time is the one currency we all have. We choose how to spend it and should choose wisely. Presents, money and all the trappings are no substitute for time spent. It’s something you will never regret giving and never get back once its gone.

Love and acceptance is paramount.

Our children need to know they have value and worth. They need to know we are there for them through the good times and not so good times.

As parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, we need to fight back against the assault. Healthy societies are built on strong families. My actions and yours directly impact our legacy and that of future generations. Be intentional about the legacy you leave. The stakes are too high not to.

Smithville’s Rich History

he Historic Towne of Smithville dates as far back as the 16th century when sea captains from the Dutch to the Portuguese explored this area of South Jersey. Smithville has established its own place in America’s history, from the arrival from England of the Leeds Family in 1678, to present day.

Daniel Leeds mapped out the land through a grant by the British Crown which was known as Egg Harbor, named for the variety and quantity of bird eggs found in this part of South Jersey. The tidal salt meadow and marsh, interspersed with shallow coves and bays provided an important resting and feeding habitat for water birds on their migration to and from their winter and summer habitats.

These conditions also brought another inhabitant to the area. Long before the Revolution, seamen found the Little Egg Harbor River, now known as the Mullica River, just a few miles north of the Historic Town of Smithville, called Chestnut Neck. It was the perfect place to smuggle goods in to the new world. They justified this practice by claiming the Crown was taxing them to highly. It also, coincidently, encouraged a much bigger profit since the goods were now duty free. This area to mid 1700’s was virtually uncharted and vast with what is known as the pine barrens. This included the Little

Revolutionary War. While the colonies won their independence this new found freedom created a wave of expansion. With a trek to the eastern shores. In 1787, James Baremore marrying a cousin of the Leeds family, built the original Smithville Inn on a track of land owned by Daniel Smith who purchased the land a few years before. The Inn quickly became a popular rest for those traveling along the east to west stretch from Philadelphia and Cooper’s Landing (now Camden) to the coast. This created a focal point for merchants and craftsmen alike and was also used for a meeting and polling place up to 1876.

However, the owners who were now the Smith Family joined a growing trend and

The Revolutionary War made these pirates a legitimate enterprise. Taking from the British who hired, what they called Privateers, to capture or pillage French supply

All that had to be done was equip a vessel with a few cannon and apply to the Continental Congress for a ‘Letter of Marque" which would commission you to do legally what you had been doing for years.

Chestnut Neck boasted as many as thirty or more ships at a time and is said to be one of the biggest privateer operations of the

American Dishes. Over the years Fred and Ethel found and purchased all of the historic buildings from all over South Jersey that you can now see today. In 1964, The Historic Towne of Smithville became a National Historic Site.

Smithville has changed hands many times in the past 40 years. In 1974, the Noyes family sold the towne to the American Broadcasting Company for $7 million, then it was sold to the Smithville Development Company. One of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partners, James Cooper purchased the Inn in 1982 and the surrounding buildings, but then in 1985 the Philadelphia based Smithville Associ-

ates bought the property and leased the Inn to Cooper. However, the Towne fell on hard times and was eventually bought by the Cresmont Federal Savings Bank for $150,000 at a sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auction. Which leads us to the present. The Historic Towne of Smithville which is on the east side of Lake Meone, was purchased by the Towne of Historic Smithville Partnership LLC., with Anthony Coppola as lead partner. The Village Greene on the west side of Lake Meone was purchased by Ed and Wendie Fitzgerald.

hore Medical Center is proud to recognize Linda Arreguin, RN, as its May 2018 Guardian Angel of the Month for providing passionate and exceptional care to Shore’s patients. The Guardian Angel Program was established to enable members of the community to say thank you to a special Shore caregiver through a donation to the medical center.

Arreguin came to Shore Medical Center in March of 2003, where she began her career with Shore on the 4 Whitby unit. In 2010, she transferred to the float team where she remains today.

Luanne McGroarty, nurse manager of ICU and Telemetry, says staff are extremely grateful when Arreguin is assigned to their floor.

“Linda has many qualities that make her a great nurse. She’s compassionate, empathetic, a patient advocate and a team player. Shore is fortunate to have her as a member of the organization,” says McGroarty.

Recently the wife of a patient Arreguin cared for made a Grateful Patient donation in her honor, and had this to say about her: “Linda was so kind, caring and compassionate with my husband. She gave us her undivided attention and I will never forget the outstanding care she gave him.”

Arreguin resides in Egg Harbor Township with her husband and three young children.

Jon Henderson’s Hospitality Spirit Shines

he Adrian Phillips Theater at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. As the 21st annual Atlantic City Host Awards were about to begin, hundreds of nominees, family, friends and industry people were waiting for the winners to be announced.

While the award show vibe accounted for much of the anticipation and excitement, a portion of the anticipation centered, for many of us, around the recipient of the Spirit of Hospitality Award for 2018, Jon Henderson.

If you know Jon Henderson and are familiar with his Good Time Tricycle team and have watch in amazement his ability to design, develop and create events that have drawn over 125,000 visitors to our region accounting for over 18 million dollars in economic impact, then you know Jon’s work.

However, if you know Jon’s style and his perfectly matched personality then the anticipation of “What will Jon say when he accepts the award?” was exactly what the people that know and have had the opportunity to listen and learn from Jon Henderson were thinking. Many in the crowd wondered “Would Jon Henderson’s acceptance speech be as colorful as his highly viewed videos and social media posts?” Now that is excitement and anticipation!

The Kenny I Orchestra once again did an excellent job pairing appropriate songs

as the award and scholarship winners were announced. The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority once again created a wonderful event along with the selection committee members from Stockton University, Atlantic Cape Community College, Fairleigh Dickinson, the Greater Atlantic City Chamber, Local 54, Meet AC and the Bacharach Scholarship Committee.

The award winners received well deserved applause and appreciation when the top vote getters were announced throughout the night.

As Jon Henderson was introduced, it was clear the depth and value of his contribution to the Atlantic City region resonated with those that serve our visitors every day. As the anticipation continued to build, Jon did something that he has done since putting on his very first event in Atlantic City. Jon Henderson surprised us all. Jon was brief and on target in humbly accepting the 2018 Spirit of Hospitality Award. He reminded the crowd of hardworking dedicated industry workers that while Good Time Tricycle may bring the visitors here, it is their quality customer service that keeps those visitors coming back. He also did something that he said up to this point he has never had the opportunity to do. He then thanked those in attendance and those in the industry for everything they do and have done that has helped contribute to the success that Jon and his team at Good Time Tricycle has achieved. Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

other’s Day is on Sunday, May 13th and if you are still wondering what to get that special mom in your life, let me give you some help. This will be my eighth year as a mother on Mother’s Day and this has become my favorite day of the year, second to only my twins’ birthday. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make that special mom in your life feel loved.

You cannot go wrong with a gift that includes pampering. A spa gift certificate is great because she can choose which treatments she wants to get. There are a lot of spa options in this area, but my favorite is At Anchor Day Spa in Northfield. I had the most relaxing and restorative facial there a few months ago and highly recommend it.

If you are buying a gift for a new

mom, take the baby to a pottery place like Glazed Over in Ocean City and you can paint a mug or other piece of pottery with the baby’s footprints on it. I did this for my husband on his first Father’s Day and he loved it. It took about 10 tries until we got the footprints right but it was so worth it. He still uses it for coffee.

If you read this column regularly, you know that I am one of the co-founders and market managers of the Linwood Farmers Market. We have a fantastic vendor this season called Krafty Kousins. They make the most adorable personalized crafts.

A few weeks ago during the market my kids asked for some money so that they could buy me a surprise. I reluctantly gave it to them and they returned a short while later with the sweetest and cutest dish that says Best Mom Ever.

I love gifts like this because if it’s something that I use every day,

it makes me think of my kids. I use it as a jewelry dish so every night when I take off my rings and earrings, I put them in my Best Mom Ever dish and smile.

Jewelry is always a winner too. On my first Mother’s Day I re-

ceived a necklace with two charms, each one had an initial for my kids. I love this necklace because it makes me feel like a piece of them is always with me and close to my heart. You could also get a pretty locket so the mom could put pictures of her children inside. Jewelry with the children’s birthstones is also really special.

My favorite Mother’s Day gift cannot be bought in a store. What moms really want on Mother’s Day is a break from laundry, cooking and cleaning. On my first Mother’s Day my husband started a tradition of making dinner and has done so every year since. I always look forward to this dinner because he’s a great cook and because it means I can relax without having to do any food shopping, cooking or cleaning. No matter what you get that special mom in your life this year, make sure she gets a break and knows how appreciated she is!

Paddle For A Cause Fundraising Is Off To The Races

ompetitors are training and raising funds for the 11th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For A Cause Presented by Curexa and in Memory and Honor of Karen Grant.

Racers will compete for their share of more than $5,000 in prize money.

Paddle Boarders and rowers from around the world will participate in various events throughout the the waterways Saturday, June 9 at Golden Nugget Atlantic City. There are 4-mile and 8-mile fun paddles that navigate the back bays to The Wonder Bar. The marquee event is the 22.5-mile race around Absecon Island, which draws paddleboarding and rowing competitors from around the world and offers prizes for men’s and women’s prone and stand-up paddleboarding divisions. Paddleboarding teams can also complete the 22.5-mile as a re-

The course was designed to challenge racers as a reminder that they are helping people struggling with cancer.

Registration is now open at TheDRCF. org. There is also a virtual paddling event for those who want to take part in the event without getting wet.

All paddlers and virtual paddlers are required to fundraise $200 to participate with proceeds benefiting the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to financially assist people with cancer. Virtual paddlers

who raise the minimum $200 entry fee will receive a swag bag, entry into the after party and race gear that is provided to all paddlers.

This year, the event will be dedicated to the memory of Karen Grant who passed away this April. Grant was a recipient of the generosity of the Foundation in 2013 when she was diagnosed with Primary Peritoneal Cancer. She said wanted to give back to the DRCF once she was healthy enough to contribute. She became a board member shortly after a was the top fundraiser at last year’s Paddle For A Cause.

"She was so committed and passionate with what was a priority in her life, one of which was obviously the DRCF, as she served as one of the most dedicated members on our board up until this dreadful disease took her life,” said foundation president Mark Zappone.

Last year, more than 120 participants helped the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation surpass its $100,000 goal by $10,000. Prize money will be awarded in each of the following categories: men’s and women’s 14-foot and less stand-up paddleboard and prone unlimited; $800 for first, $350 for second and $150 for third.

After the action on the water, an after party and awards ceremony will be held 4 p.m. at The Deck at Golden Nugget. The party is included with registration and $25 to all others.

Residents with homes along paddle course Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport are encouraged to show support the paddlers as they pass.

Republican Dirty Tricks in the Nomination for United States Congress in District 2

O

ur electoral politics from the inside baseball level needs to be addressed immediately. It's broken and the only way to effectuate positive change is for people of good faith to rally together and demand change.

The most recent cases in point involve the Cumberland County Republican Party in general and Chairman Michael Testa in particular.

Testa appears to be the architect of two very bad political tactics that should never be attempted, ever again.

The first dirty trick was played on Brian Fitzherbert. He attended the Cumberland County Republican Convention on March 20, 2018. After winning the Gloucester County Convention, Fitzher-

bert thought he was a surging candidate on a good roll and he was looking to continue his momentum.

However, to be eligible for consideration in Cumberland County, he needed to receive a nomination and a second by two people in attendance. Even though this is Fitzpatrick's maiden voyage into electoral politics, he had lined-up four people to nominate and second him for consideration. He had an "Heir and a Spare." Or, so he thought.

When the moment of truth arrived, all four sat on their hands. Fitzherbert had failed to receive the required "first and second." What did Testa do in response?

He removed Fitzherbert from their election ballot and Fitzherbert could not even be considered by the Cumberland County Committee members. He was in attendance and had to endure this indignity.

Various sources have stated to me that Testa orchestrated this dirty trick, but, I have been unable to prove that he did. My strong personal belief is that he is the architect. But, I never confirm what I can't prove.

Here's what I do know. Testa could have prevented this extreme injustice

from occurring in the first place. Let's compare Testa to the honorable and highly respected Ocean Township Republican Chairman George Gilmore and how he handled this same issue.

When all of the Republican candidates appeared at Republican Convention, Gilmore made certain that each candidate had a nominating person and a second linedup in advance.

Gilmore further stated at his Convention that regardless of having a nomination and a second, "that all of these candidates have supported us and deserve to be considered."

Testa could have and should have stepped in and made certain that Fitzherbert received a nomination. Had Testa nominated Fitzherbert, just as he did for United States Senate candidate Bob Hugin, there would have been a line formed to second the Fitzherbert nomination.

Testa admitted to me that Fitzherbert had attended their various meetings and breakfast events. It's inexplicable and wrong that Testa handled Fitzherbert in this unprofessional manner.

There was a very uncomfortable

mood in the room when this dirty trick was going down. In case you're curious, yes, Fitzherbert (after the meeting ended) asked the people who were supposed to nominate him why they didn't? "They were really uncomfortable about it and said that they were sorry," said Fitzherbert.

This is an example as to how dirty our electoral process has become, when insiders are willing to play it this sleazy. These kinds of tactics should never be rewarded.

Things have gotten even worse for Fitzherbert. His official campaign petition for eligibility was challenged in court. A judge has determined that he had only 193 valid voter signatures. In New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District, you need to submit a minimum of 200.

Fitzherbert is presently appealing this decision, which has also been upheld by the New Jersey Secretary of State. If Fitzherbert loses his appeal, he's off of the June 5, 2018 Primary Election ballot entirely.

Incredulously, Testa wasn't done with his Cumberland County political antics.

At this same Cumberland County Convention, Turkavage upset "favorite son" and former New Jersey Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi by just one vote and won the formal Cumberland County endorsement.

Fitzherbert stated to me on-air (on March 22, 2018) that "Chairman Testa displayed an unprofessional facial expression when he announced that Turkavage was the winner. Turk is a good man and he deserves better than that facial expression that everyone saw," said Fitzherbert.

So, to believe Fitzherbert and others ... and I do, Testa was not happy that Turkavage had won the Cumberland County Convention.

Almost no one involved in our region's electoral political scene could believe what would happen next. Fiocchi appeared on "Hurley in the Morning" in a very classy appearance and he stated that "it was was wrong how Turkavage and Fitzherbert were treated," during and after the Cumberland County Convention.

What took place next is one of the dirtiest tricks ever played in local memory.

There was routine paper work required to be filed with the Cumberland County Clerk in order for Turkavage to receive his rightful Column A placement on the upcoming June 5, 2018 Primary Election ballot.

Turkavage is only guilty of being a rookie. He didn't know that he was re-

quired to fill-out some deminimis form.

However, Testa certainly did know. And, Testa purposely let the deadline pass so that Turkavage would not receive Column A. This is disgusting at every decent and human level. I spoke with Testa about this.

He said that if "you're running for a seat in Congress, it's your responsibility to know the rules." I told him that may be true, but, Turkavage has never run before and he simply didn't know about the paper work.

I also advised Testa that he had a direct responsibility to support the winner of his Convention and that he failed to do his job.

Instead of being in Column A with all of the other regular endorsed Cumberland County Republicans, Turkavage is presently in Column F. He is currently appealing to try and regain his earned Column A standing.

Interesting to note, Testa is an attorney, yet, Turkavage was left to file his own appeal. It is my view that Testa is a case study into everything that is wrong and broken regarding our electoral system at the political party level.

Should Turkavage not be successful with his legal appeal; Here is what Testa has accomplished. Currently, there is no Column A candidate for the United States House of Representatives. It is blank. No one can recall any time in history when a County election ballot did not have a

regular Republican endorsed candidate in the coveted Column A ballot placement for Congress.

Had the United States Senate seat not be on the ballot this year, Testa was prepared to allow the very top-of-the-ticket to be blank.

It's unprecedented.

Both of these bizarre examples that happened to Fitzherbert and Turkavage were completely preventable. Each dirty trick happened on purpose, not by accident. Making matters even worse.

A senior at Atlantic County Institute of Technology, Sylvia is a member of the Student Advisory Council, the Drama Club, the Hamilton Township Community Band, and the 2nd Congressional District Youth Advisory Committee. In addition, she is a Governor's STEM Scholar, Secretary of the Student Council, Board of Education Liaison, and AFJROTC Former Operations Support Squadron Commander. She is also a Third Degree Black Belt in Martial Arts and was on the first place team in the Seaperch Regional Robotics Competition and earned sixth place in the Seaperch National

Under the direction of NJPSA Assistant Executive Director Chuck Stein, The Student Activities Committee of NJPSA reviewed all applications and selected the winners. "This year's applications were among the most outstanding we have ever seen," said Stein. "I am always impressed by the level of dedication and commitment these students demonstrate to their chosen activities. I have no doubt that these future leaders of society will realize tremendous success, and NJPSA is proud to recognize their contributions in this way."

A luncheon was held at NJPSA on May 8 to honor the scholarship recipients.

'The Dash'

read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her casket from beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own, the cars, the house, the cash, What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard; Are there things you would like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what is true and real and always try to understand the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we have never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile, Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read with your life’s actions to rehash… Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

A Life Well Lived ~ Karen Grant

“K

aren inspired all who knew her to be a better person,” said Mark Zappone President of the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation.

“She was beautiful inside and out. Kind, gentle, compassionate and fearless. She never complained and always had a smile.”

Karen Grant, 46, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2018.

Karen will long be remembered by family, friends and acquaintances for her generous spirit, her many acts of kindness, her joyful optimism, her beautiful smile and her distinctive, infectious laugh.

When diagnosed with cancer, Karen chose not to be defeated. Instead, she adopted the following words as her own.

“When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.”

So, in the face of illness, Karen continued to lovingly and patiently care for her family, she continued to comfort and encourage others in their struggles, she provided aid to others in need through her work with the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, Gilda’s Club and Wesley

Manor, and she continued to see blessings and beauty all around her. In doing so, not only did Karen beat cancer, she served as a beautiful example of strength, dignity and quiet grace.

Karen is survived by the love of her life, Mark Yaffee; by her beloved parents, Gary Grant and Maureen “Mo” Grant to whom she was

Hard Rock Chairman Jim Allen said in a live broadcast from Times Square shown during an event at Hard Rock's preview center at the Tanger Outlets in Atlantic City. "It's not about gaming, it's about entertainment."

Jim Allen wasn’t exaggerating about it being about entertainment.

A Show of Strength

hen Atilis Gym opened in Egg Harbor Township last year, many people had doubts.

With seven gyms within a few mile radius and a huge space to fill, the odds seem stacked against them.

But one year later, Atilis is thriving and utilizing all of its 25,000 square feet with hundreds of clients, training programs and classes going on

throughout each day.

With such a huge space to utilize, Lambert needed to get creative. He brought in smaller, private fitness businesses to lease space and offer a wide array of fitness classes to his members. WWBC Fitness, Phit 45, Java Cult Fitness, Gotta Have Faith and Tabata Boot Camp all operate out of Atilis, Egg Harbor Township location.

“It is a win-win arrangement,” says Lambert. “It utilizes all the available space. All the Atilis members see these classes and may want to try them and their members may want to join Atilis so they can compliment what they are already doing.”

retired from the police force and decided to follow his dream of owning a fitness center. He purchased his first Atilis in Wildwood at the time. Since then he has opened an Atilis in Avalon, Sea Isle City, Ocean City and Egg Harbor Township. Atilis, Bellmawr is in the works.

“Atilis is successful because it's different. There are no contracts, no initiation fees and no hidden costs.

I don't worry about cancellations because I know they will be back,” says Lambert.“Everybody helps each other here, all ages, sizes and shapes” Lambert is also a strong believer in giving back to the community. Lambert is the proud father of two sons, Brandon (16) and Codie(21).

Codie will be graduating this month from Coastal Carolina University and Lambert looks forward to now working with him in the family business.

Clothes, Mom and me “The Light" by Raymond Tyler My three best friends and I decided to go to DC for our graduation trip. A whole 4 days without parents, teachers or adult supervision and my mom flipped. If she wasn’t interrogating me about why I wanted to go, she was telling me I should stay with my cousin and their family. Then some days, she would just shout at me. Then, three days before my trip my mother told me to get in the car.

f there were ever 2 people that loved each other across a generation and gender gap, those people are my mother Mary Tyler and I. We got along well enough until I committed the sin of growing up. I think the truth of the matter is we understood each other and the roles we played in each others lives much better when she was the doting mother, and I was the larger than average man child that needed her. The gap between us started (I believe) when I was 9 or 10 at Marco’s Children’s Store in Pleasantville. The sales lady frustrated with trying to fit me just said in her most sincere and honest voice. “Mrs. Tyler. You just have a large sized son. It’s not his fault. He’s just a big young man.

We don’t have clothes to fit him. Take your son to a men’s store and they can size him right up no problem.”

My mother however, was not ready to take her pre-teen son to Miller’s, or Jules or where my father bought his clothes. Sure enough, before too long, I was making my way to buy clothes, sneakers, and things without Mom. Fast forward to June of 1986 because up until then I didn’t know if our love would be stronger than the gap between us.

Atlantic Avenue to get jeans, shirts, and new sneakers. I got home and went into my bedroom. There was a brand new Pepsi Cola Sweatshirt (she bought it because everyone else was wearing Coke shirts) , a UCLA starter jacket and matching cap on my bed.

My mother proved two things that day. Number one ...she could still pick out some great clothes for her boy.

Number two...that though we still to this day do not understand each other,we love each other without question or limits. Not only was I the best dressed on that trip, people that knew me still wonder where I got that shirt from. (and I don’t know where) I think for Mother’s Day maybe I will take my mom out to get a new outfit.
