hate to admit it, but I have always been lukewarm about issues related to our environment. I know it's important and I would never litter. I do recycle, but….I love my convenience and for some reason I find water bottles an easy grab and go, never thinking about where all those bottles end up.

Recently I heard a startling fact though. By the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

Thinking about that and all its implications is scary. Plastics are being consumed by the fish that we consume and even now showing up in our minerals, such as salt. Therefore we are consuming,on some level, plastic.

What is that doing to our health?

The millennials are leading the way in taking us back to our roots of healthy living, real food and reusable water bottles, not made of plastic.

Let’s follow their lead back to basics, caring for our environment and keeping our food real.

f you're like me, chances are you are sick and tired and fed up with the horrible Spring season so far, am I right? Outside of a few fairly nice days sprinkled about here and there, we've seen below average temperatures and cloudy weather with rain or the prospect of snow. This came as no surprise though because I laid out the case for what would play out in March and April in mid-February. No, I'm not an evil wizard, I just look at patterns and forecast ahead based off of what happened decades ago under the same conditions.

We are now on the road to come close to 80 by the end of the week.

That should make you jump for joy. But wait! Those of you at the coast are in for a rude awakening, especially if you live in Atlantic City, Brigantine, Ventnor, etc. Eastern Atlantic County typically gets the short end of the stick due to wind direction. While Hammonton could be at 80, Atlantic City could be at 55. It's a Spring thing - all due to the ocean.

I think Friday and Saturday will be toasty. Then what? Probably a drop in temps for another week or so, Then finally sustainable warmth.

Where are the Foxes

“Stop killing our foxes!” “Survival of the fittest is natural.” “Don’t mess with evolution!”

These are just a few of the cries of Brigantine residents and tourists alike who are heartbroken and outraged at the news that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has admitted to killing the beloved Brigantine Red Fox. Over the last several years, residents have observed a noticeable decrease in fox sightings on the island, which raised concerns about where the fox are going. When a video surfaced recently of dead fox on the Brigantine beaches, residents brought their concerns to local officials only to find out devastating

news. The New Jersey DEP has been trapping and shooting them. This process is in place in an effort to preserve the wildlife of the birds that the foxes prey on, specifically the red knot and the piping plover, which are protected by the adjacent National Wildlife Refuge.

New Jersey residents are not sold into this explanation for multiple reasons. Brigantine residents have become accustomed to seeing “Briggy” the fox, the unofficial mascot of Brigantine, roam the beaches, enjoy the sunsets, and play with local cats in the streets. They’re virtually harmless to humans, which is why there is so much uproar about the elimination of them.

Extinction is a natural part of evolution and many people feel as though the only reason we should conserve or alter biodiversity is for ourselves, to create a stable future for human beings. The killing of one species to protect another causes hiccups in the ecosystem and disrupts nature’s process. As it relates to the foxes, while it may be true that the fox endanger the reproduction of the piping plover, it is also true that the removal of the fox results in rodent problems for local residents. The foxes are known to eat rats and mice that would otherwise find their way into the trashes and the homes of residents. At one point, ten years ago, the state trapped most of the island’s foxes in order to protect the piping plover. The result was an immediate increase in rats and mice on the island.

The rhythm of nature balances itself out and each species has a unique place in the ecosystem, all intertwined and purposeful in its own right. The questions on everyone’s mind and coursing the comments across social media are, “why are the birds more valuable or important than the foxes? What makes the life of one species less valuable than another?

And why now?”

The DEP says that the foxes can’t be relocated because it will simply move the problem somewhere else.

New Jersey residents disagree stating that the mainland is not home to the piping plovers who are unique to the wildlife refuge location. Moving the foxes to the mainland is a viable suggestion. Whether the foxes eat other kinds of eggs on the mainland or the racoons in brigantine start to eat the plover eggs, advocates against these killings are pleading that the state stop messing with mother nature and let the circle of life happen as it is intended.

Trapping and taking of fox occurs on federally protected lands, such as the Sandy Hook National Recreation Area and the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge unless otherwise necessary. Trappings can also occur on municipal beachers where they pose a threat. Trapping season is from November through March 15th.

According to The Division of Fish and Wildlife, about ten foxes are taken at North Brigantine natural area in any given year but that number can vary.

Residents are taking action on their beloved Briggy The Fox though.

They’re contacting the DEP and local officials to protest against the shootings. They’re letting their voices be heard and standing up for what they believe to be right. The Brigantine foxes have made a lifetime of memories for many long time locals. Even those who have been on the island for a short time share fond memories of fox sightings and find themselves with heavy hearts at the news.

10 Years of Our Children Making Change

en years ago Laura Dulac of Margate was frustrated by the lack of age appropriate volunteer activities for her young daughters. Rather than give up, Laura took matters into her own hands by creating Our Children Making Change, a program in which children raise money for charities in their communities. Over the years the program has expanded to three states and over $450,000 has been raised for local charities by kids, pretty amazing!

This will be the fourth summer that my kids will participate in Our Children Making Change.

While they were very young when they started, over the years they have grown with the program and each summer are able to contribute more and more. So how does the program work? A kickoff event will be held on Sunday, June 3rd. At the kickoff event, teams of kids make presentations about local charities they would like to nominate.

They use pictures and visuals to describe the work of the charities and explain why the work they do is important. After listening to all of the presentations, the kids vote on which charities they feel are most important. Usually six charities are chosen and over the course of

the summer, kids are asked to raise money that will be evenly distributed between the chosen charities at the end of the summer.

how they would raise money? The possibilities are endless! Try to think about what your kids are good at or enjoy doing. My kids love to cook with me so we bake challah breads on Fridays during the summer and sell them. I have organized a team for the past few years and we do group activities as well as individual activities. Last summer my team had a table at the Brigantine Farmers Market one Saturday and the kids on our team did craft activities for donations. We also held a multi-family yard sale in which certain items were sold exclusively for Our Children Making Change including baked goods. Last summer we set up a table in front of a high-traffic group of stores in Margate and the kids took shifts selling baked goods. Other ideas include selling artwork, doing chores like dog walking, organizing mini camps for older kids to do activities with younger kids and bike-a-thons.

Besides learning about philanthropy, the kids also benefit from learning about voting. My team has nominated charities which haven’t been chosen and that’s a good lesson for them and also motivates them to improve their presentations for the following year. The work the kids do over the summer has greatly benefitted local charities including Heart of Surfing, Funny Farm, Kyle’s Quillows and Spread the Magic Foundation.

Hometown Hero: Kathy Ford

K

athy Ford is one in two million. Those are the odds of being diagnosed with Fibroplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Ford was only eleven years old when she received the diagnosis, but it has not prevented her from living a very full and productive life.

In fact, Ford was recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair New Jersey. Ford will act as spokesperson and advocate for individuals living in New Jersey with wheelchairs.

From here she will go on to compete with other state representatives in a national competition held from July 30th through August 5th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ford has lived in Egg Harbor Township with her husband Chuck Ford, for six years. She grew up in

Central Jersey and first came to this area to attend college at Stockton University.

Upon graduation she decided to stay in Atlantic County and has been employed as a 911 dispatcher in Atlantic City for over ten years.

Ford’s condition, Fibroplasia Ossificans Progressiva is a rare condition in which soft connective tissue progressively turns to bone. There is no cure or

effective treatment for this condition. It impairs mobility greatly and progressively. In Ford's case, all but her fingers, wrist and left ankle are frozen.

Ford travels in an adaptive van with a ramp. She purchased the van through a company called Mobility Works in Woodbury. They were the ones who told Ford about the Ms. Wheelchair New Jersey competition and encouraged her to participate, even paying the $300 application fee for Ford.

Ford's platform is “Don't Block the Spot,”emphasizing that the blue striped zone is for people with mobility challenges. Sometimes cars or other vehicles block the space that should always be available to those in wheelchairs.

One major concern Ford has is the parking at the new Walmart in Egg Harbor Township. Ford reports that it is an extremely tight space to navigate a ramp and a wheelchair in.

She measured each at 96 inches. Yet each regular or nondisabled space is 118 inches, giving it 20 additional inches of space. This is illogical and although Ford has complained to Walmart and the township nothing has been done to change it as of yet.

Shore Local Talent: Jonathan Baker

J

on Baker’s artwork is well known in Atlantic County. Jon grew up in Margate and studied art since the age of five. He is a graduate of St. Joseph's University and the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia.

Jon recounts the first time his dad took him surfing. It was love at first wave and Jon was hooked. Still an avid surfer, his artwork, especially his earliest pieces reflect surfing and the iconic sights of his hometown. Lucy the Elephant, Mr. Peanut, the Diving Horse and Miss America are all featured in his paintings.

Baker is a founding member of Surfing

Artists International which is published and distributed globally. Baker’s work has been selected for movie and television sets, and published in Surfer magazine.

It has been displayed in numerous museums, galleries and private collections also. Most recently, Jon’s work has been featured at the 9/11 Memorial Art registry.

Jon is a board trustee for the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation. He believes strongly in giving back to the community and donates a great deal his time and talent through both the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation and art shows at Steve and Cookies which raises funds for Atlantic County Special Services School Jon resides in Egg Harbor Township with his wife Kristin and son, Noah. When he is not creating art, you can find him behind the oyster bar at Steve and Cookies in Margate. He shares with a hint of pride, that his son Noah is a young artist as well and has made some remarkable creations.

Ocean City Events Doo Dah Parade and Mr. Mature America Pageant Set for Saturday Erik Estrada will be grand marshal for the 2018 Doo Dah Parade in Ocean City at noon on Saturday, April 14 and return that night to emcee the Mr. Mature America Pageant. Estrada first captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide in his six-year run as highway patrol officer Frank Poncherello in the TV series "CHiPs." He has also appeared in numerous other television and motion picture roles, including the new "Armed and Famous" reality series on CBS. His talent and charm will be a perfect fit for Ocean City’s pageant, which mixes self-deprecating humor with nostalgia and talent in a tribute to men ages 55 and older. The Ocean City Music Pier crowd is raucous and appreciative as the contestants ham it up on stage, competing in talent, poise and interview segments. The pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday (April 14) on the Ocean City Music Pier. The event is the first and only pageant of its kind in the United States. Eight contestants will entertain with a wide range of talents, including everything from comedy to piano to ukulele.

Earlier in the day, Estrada will serve as grand marshal in the Doo Dah Parade, Ocean City’s season-opening celebration of all things humorous. The procession features marching bands, floats and a brigade of more than 500 basset

hounds. Parade entries will include Allen and the contestants competing for the 2018 title, Schreckengast, the Ocean City High School Marching Band, the HOBO Band, the Wildwood High School Marching Band, the Pleasantville High School Marching Band, the Atlantic City Fire Department Sandpipers, clowns from the Shriner’s Mini Cars and Motorcycle Drill Team and the Northeast Remnant CO 501st Legion Star Wars.

The parade route starts at Sixth Street and travels downtown Asbury Avenue to 12th Street, then turns to the Boardwalk at 12th Street and (new this year) finishes on the boardwalk at Sixth Street. The Doo Dah Parade was first held in Ocean City in 1986 as an event to herald the end of income tax season.

The traditional finale at the end of the parade includes a “Pie-asco” in which everybody is invited to smoosh their friends with shaving-cream pies. This year’s event moves to Sixth Street and

will start as the basset hound brigade reaches the end of the parade route.

Shore Medical Center Names Bob Protesto, RN,

its April Guardian Angel of the Month

hore Medical Center is proud to recognize Bob Protesto, RN, of Somers Point, as its April 2018 Guardian Angel of the Month for providing passionate and exceptional care to Shore’s patients. The Guardian Angel Program was established to enable members of the community to say thank you to a special Shore caregiver through a donation to the medical center.

Protesto has been a nurse on Shore’s 5th Hayes unit since 2001, and is said to be one of the most experienced nurses on the unit.

Shore Medical Center named 5th Hayes floor nurse Bob Protesto. RN, of Somers Point, its April Guardian Angel of the Month.

Kelly Duma, RN, BSN, NE-BC, manager of 5th Hayes, describes Protesto as a true patient advocate, who always makes sure the needs and wants of his patients are met.

Not only that, he’s a wealth of experience and knowledge, which he gladly shares with his colleagues.

“Bob is a leader among the staff and can always be relied upon to step up to the plate. His calm, yet efficient response to any emergency is second to none,” Duma says.

Recently, the wife of a patient Protesto cared for made a Guardian Angel donation in Protesto’s honor, and shared this about him: “Bob was an exceptional nurse. He has such a kind and compassionate demeanor.

He gave my husband great care.”

When You Lose Your Voice . . .

hat do you do when you lose your voice?

I’m sure you’ve been there. You’re either fighting a cold or allergy and either gradually or all at once you can’t talk. You lose your voice. A couple of weeks ago it happened to me. As the day went on, it seemed every time I opened my mouth to say something, it got worse until by the end of the evening I could hardly speak above a whisper. If you’ve been there, you know how I felt. It’s frustrating to have something you want to say and you just can’t communicate it properly.

If you think of “your voice” in larger terms beyond the physical sense, the analogy applies as well.

You may be there right now. You feel as if you’ve lost your voice or maybe you’re still trying to find it. What I mean is, you know you have something you want to say, a mission you want to accomplish in life or a goal you want to achieve, but you can’t seem to get on track to move in a positive direction.

You try to speak but your voice barely gets above a whisper and you feel as if your message gets lost in the static and chatter of the world around you. Either no one is listening or they hear you, but you just aren’t connecting.

As I think about my voice and yours, I’m drawn to four thoughts

or jumping-off points that we can all apply in order to have our voices heard.

Recognize the value in having a voice. Your voice is like most other things in life. You don’t know the value of what you have until you no longer have it.

Your whisper is key. When I lost my physical voice, it made me more aware of paying close attention to every word I was able to speak. When you have to think hard about speaking, you tend to make every word count. It causes you not waste your words and be intentional in your conversations.

Make the words you speak count.

Your voice is unique. Don’t discount it’s value. It’s important to realize that each of us has a distinct voice. We are all originals with a gift to share like no one else.

Push through the process.

When you’re left with no whisper, it’s easy to just give up and fall silent. But what you have to share is important. So, stick with it and push through the pain of the comeback. Maybe you need a timeout to rest your voice. But sooner or later it will make a comeback and when it does make what you have to say count and stronger than ever.

Bungalow Bowls

A

pril is typically the month when beach towns like Ocean City start to come back to life after a sleepy winter. Around this time is when we see new stores and restaurants opening.

Some of these new businesses are seasonal and hope to appeal to the summer crowds.

Others are run by locals who know this area and see a need to bring something unique to the Jersey Shore not just in the busy season, but all year round. Erin Oechslin and Brooke Weidlich are childhood friends from Somers Point who recently opened Bungalow Bowls at 11th and Asbury. For a restaurant that’s only been open for a short time in the

shoulder season, it’s impressive how much of a following they have cultivated in such a short time!

After a trip to California where they fell in love with the bowls concept, Oechslin and Wiedlich spent long hours coming up with a plan to open their own bowls restaurant. Last August they both handed in their resignations to their teaching jobs and decided to pursue their dream. When the opportunity presented itself for space in downtown Ocean City, they knew that the time was right.

It’s hard to pinpoint what I liked best about Bungalow Bowls. The space is small, but so bright and inviting. It has a California beach vibe that makes you feel relaxed from the second you walk in the door. All of the bowls are named after their favorite songs like Good Vibrations, One Love and Island in the Sun. The menu is made up of smoothie bowls with four different kinds of bases that include acai, pitaya, green and ocean. The bases are all healthy and topped with delicious ingredients like fresh fruit, granola, coconut flakes and a honey drizzle. I tried an acai bowl topped with blackberries, pineapple, kiwi and granola.

It was absolutely delicious, tasting decadent for something that is quite healthy! If you prefer to drink your smoothies instead of eating them, they offer those as well named after all different streets in Ocean City. Prices range from $9 to $11 for bowls and $7 to $8 for smoothies.

Bungalow Bowls is doing a lot of things right, but one thing in particular that stood out for me is their use of eco-friendly bowls,

straws and wooden spoons. I am very concerned about my carbon footprint and try to patronize businesses that are concerned with their environmental impact. Another reason to love them is that they are BYOB, if you bring your own bowl you will get 10% off.

In a beach town that revolves around a boardwalk packed with funnel cake and caramel corn, it is refreshing to have healthier options. It’s hard not to feel relaxed and well-nourished after a visit to Bungalow Bowls. Erin and Brooke are just getting started. They seem destined for success with such a great concept. And in spite of their name, sugar alcohols aren't alcoholic.

Besides being lower in calories, sugar alcohols don't cause cavities which is why they're used in sugar-free gum and mouthwash . Sugar alcohols also create a cooling sensation when used in large amounts, which works well with mint flavors.

Food companies often combine sugar alcohols with artificial sweeteners to make foods taste sweeter. If you're trying to lose weight, you might benefit from swapping sugar alcohols for sugar and other higher-calorie sweeteners in low amounts.

Besides being lower in calories, sugar alcohols don't cause cavities , which is why they're used in sugar-free gum and mouthwash . Sugar alcohols also create a cooling sensation when used in large amounts, which works well with mint flavors.

Your small intestine doesn't absorb sugar alcohols well, so fewer calories get into your body. But because sugar

alcohols aren't completely absorbed, if you eat too many you might get gas , bloating , and diarrhea. Foods that have mannitol or sorbitol in them include a warning on the package that eating a lot of these foods could make them act like a laxative.

Try to check the labels. Food manufacturers sometimes include grams of sugar alcohols per serving on the label, but they don't have to.

The specific name may be listed, such as xylitol, or the general term "sugar alcohol" may be used. But if the packaging includes a statement about the health effects of sugar alcohols, manufacturers have to list the amount per serving.

Sugar alcohols can be part of a healthy eating plan when you need to manage diabetes. Unlike artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols are a kind of carb and can raise blood sugar levels , though not as much as sugar.

You'll need to count carbs and calories from sugar alcohols in your overall meal plan. Foods labeled "sugar free" or "no sugar added" might seem like "free" foods you can eat as much of as you like, but overeating them can make your blood sugar levels very high.

If you're counting carbs and the food has more than 5 grams of sugar alcohols, subtract half of the sugar alcohol grams from total carb grams.

For example, if the label lists "Total Carbohydrate 25 g" and "Sugar Alcohol 10 g," do this math: ▶Divide ▶ sugar alcohol grams in half = 5 g ▶Subtract ▶ 5 g from Total Carbohydrate: 25 g - 5 g = 20 g ▶Count ▶ 20 g of carbs in your meal plan ▶One ▶ exception: If erythritol is the only sugar alcohol listed, subtract all of the grams of sugar alcohol from Total Carbohydrates.

Remember, sugar alcohols never leave your body. Where do they go?

They do not digest causing stomach discomfort and digestive issues. My advise is to try to beat the sugar habit all together filling your body daily with the balanced nutrition as nature has intended. When you fill the voids with good wholesome organic foods , the body will never need or ask for sugar.

he lines are back. The lines are back. Thank goodness the lines are back! Wellington Avenue in Ventnor was under construction seemingly for an eternity and upon completion, we were gifted with a pristine, smooth blacktop that was a pleasure to drive on. It was also a blank slate for months. There were

lines, we wrote on lined paper. We wait in lines at airports, theaters and in supermarkets.

Lines are what keep things in order. But who would think that the absence of lines on a secondary road at the shore would be so challenging? I have seen drivers riding on what should be the shoulder. They have been driving half in and half out of what once was the left turn lane and others have been waiting to make a left turn from what was the right lane.

One acquaintance was overheard saying that she was almost in a head on collision on Wellington Avenue. A head on collision! As wide as Wellington Avenue is, some drivers can’t seem to navigate their way a short distance down the road without encroaching onto the other side. With all the sensory input and responses required to safely operate a motor vehicle, it

no lines; no double solid line down the center, no left turn lanes and no line delineating the shoulder from the right lane. One would think this should not be a problem but from what I have overheard, read on Facebook and experienced myself, for many drivers it was a definite problem. Apparently, as much as we try and avoid some structure in our lives, it has been hardwired into us at an early age. We were told that we must color inside the lines or we are rebellious or something else is wrong with us.

In fact, coloring inside the lines has prompted publishers to produce coloring books for adults with increasingly difficult and intricate designs to make it more challenging. In school, we were taught to stand or walk in straight

Northern Gannets Make Spring Appearance

ird and nature enthusiasts flocked to the Jersey shore this past weekend for a rare and unforgettable sighting. The Northern Gannets made their fly by. These seabirds are only seen briefly along our coastal are during migration season, between late March and early April then again in September. The Cape May Bird Observatory estimates that over 10,000 gannets could be spotted making their trek across the Delaware Bay. These large seabirds have bright white plumage, distinctive wingtips and a yellow head. They are easy to spot with a good pair of binoculars. Once known as the

Solan Goose, Northern Gannets have a wingspan of up to six feet in length and weigh anywhere from five to seven pounds. They can travel at velocities between thirty and forty miles per hour.

Northern Gannets have one of the most spectacular diving techniques. They plunge vertically into the water at speeds up to 60 miles an hour and can swim down 40 to 50 feet. When feeding, they can spot prey from heights of up to 148 feet but typically search anywhere from 30 to 60 feet above sea level.

Roughly 90% of a Northern Gannets’ diet is made up of small fish, but can also feed off of squid, sardines, anchovies, haddock and smelt.

of fishing boats and, locally, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in hope of catching any fish in its wake.

While there is a growing population of over 1 million birds, the Northern Gannets remain a protected species in the United Kingdom. Their main predators are the bald white-tailed and golden eagles on land and, at sea, large sharks and seals. The average lifespan of a Northern Gannet is has been known to reach 35 years.

Gannets will nest and breed on sea cliffs and ledges of islands along the Canadian Maritimes, Iceland, the United Kingdom and parts of Sweden. The small rocky islands of Greenland and Spitsbergen, Norway allow suitable breeding conditions for the twenty six weeks needed for brooding.

Occasionally, they sleep in protected ledges on the mainland, however their webbed feet makes walking at long distances difficult.

More than 150,000 Northern Gannets make the trek to Bass Rock, a small island on the outer part of Scotland, to breed. North America has six breeding colonies; three are in the Gulf of St. Laurence, Quebec and three just off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is truly enthralling to see these majestic birds in flight.

Spring Cleaning: Preparing for a Minimalist Summer at the Shore – Part II

or the second part of this series I am focusing on waste. Ever consider how much a person wastes in one day? Take something as simple as coffee. Most people drink coffee on a daily basis, and everyone has their own personal preference.

I, personally, enjoy Dunkin Donuts. A medium hot coffee with two creams and two sugars is my go-to and has been for years now.

But because my spring cleaning isn’t stopping at home, I began considering the real cost of buying something as benign as coffee every day.

Dunkin Donuts uses Styrofoam cups for insulation, which keeps coffee warmer for a longer period of time. This sounds great at first – after all, there is nothing worse than having to drink a tepid cup of coffee – but take a second and consider what Styrofoam is.

First of all, Styrofoam is just a brandname. The material is actually called polystyrene.

Simply put, it’s just a different form of plastic, expanded into a foam using air. According to “Why You Should Say No to Styrofoam,” an article written for 1millionwomen.com, the United States uses enough polystyrene cups to encircle the planet 426 times, and that’s just the U.S. alone.

Sadly, the Earth cannot digest plastic at all. It is a product that sticks around long after we discard it. Because of this, it finds its way into the ocean and stays there. Marine life suffers the most from this, but so do humans. Dangerous chemicals like PCB, DDT, and PAH are absorbed and cause a number of really bad things like endocrine disruption and cancer-causing mutations. There is also something called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which was discovered in the 1980s. This is exactly what it sounds like: islands of plastic and chemical sludge the size of Texas and bigger in our oceans.

And it has only become worse since. If you haven’t seen one of these, do yourself a favor and Google – it’s truly mind-blowing.

“Wow!” I said to myself, reading about all of this for the first time. “All this from a disposable coffee cup?”

It’s true, though. The amount of plastic used in our country is just simply unsustainable. This all made me consider where

I use plastic the most in other areas: the grocery store, eating utensils, writing utensils, plastic wrap, plasticware, the wrapping of every food item out there… literally everything.

It was a little overwhelming, at first, but after the initial shock, I began considering how I can make little changes in my life in order to reduce the amount of plastic I use. It’s more than possible. First off, water bottles are out. They are unnecessary. Tap water is fine, and there are always filtering systems for safe measure.

Also, there is no need to use disposable coffee cups. My wife purchased me a Keep Cup, which is a reusable coffee cup made of glass and sustainably-sourced cork. The cork is a nice addition because the glass gets really hot. It comes in handy for all types of beverages and is really cool looking, too. The supermarket is a great place to make a difference, as well. As a society, we use way too many plastic bags.

Sometimes people use one plastic bag per item or two or three! I always think about this: where do all the plastic bags go after they are done using them? Are they just thrown in the garbage? They must be because plastic bags can’t be recycled. It’s better to use paper bags; paper bags can be recycled, and they hold more stuff! Obviously, the reusable bags that can be bought are the best, but if you’re a forgetful person like me, you never remember to bring them to the store with you. Paper bags are always available, even if they are not visibly out in the open. Just simply tell the cashier you prefer paper of plastic.

Something else my wife and I love to do is entertain our friends. Rather than using dishware, it’s so much easier to go out and buy paper plates, utensils, and

plastic cups. But, again, this is unnecessary and unsustainable. The environmental impact of plastic cups alone is immense. According to the article “Does the Plastic You drink from Hurt Your Heart,” published on abcnews.go.com, studies are putting forth more and more evidence that BPA (or Bisphenol A), a common chemical in plastic, is bad for

your heart. BPA can also be found in baby bottles and “sippy” cups, which is also something to consider. So, in the end, it’s better to just take the extra time and wash the dishes; it’s safer for you and your guests.

Ask yourself, “How much plastic do I use? And how much of it is out of necessity or convenience?” Do you really need to go out and buy water when it’s perfectly safe to just drink it from the tap? Do you really need a separate plastic bag for the eggs, the milk, the produce, and napkins? Is it that hard to have to wash the dishes or run the dishwasher after company leaves? These are little things, yes; however, when you consider all of these little things, they make a great impact on our planet. By making these small changes, you, reader, are making a positive impact on our planet. It may seem minute, but it’s really not in the end. The bigger picture is that if we can all make changes like these, we can save money and shrink are carbon footprints at the same time. It’s a win-win.

Celebrate Earth Day by cleaning the bay

W

hat better way to celebrate Earth Day than to get out in nature and help to clean up your community? And why not do it with a great group of like-minded individuals who care about the environment? Well, this year, Patcong Creek Foundation is making a fun, Earth Day clean-up event possible on Saturday, April 21—the day before Earth Day. Patcong Creek Foundation is seeking volunteers to help clean up the wetlands along Steelman Bay—Somers Point’s Eastern border. The Foundation was founded as a group committed to stewardship of Patcong Creek—the water body that is Somers Point’s Western border and is home to at least 10 endangered or threatened species.

Patcong Creek is also a second home to many crabbers, who delight in the bounty of blue crabs that live there. It was a group of crabbers that were the original force behind the formation of Patcong Creek Foundation.

When Patcong Creek Foundation first formed, volunteers began participating in the annual Patcong Creek Cleanup, which had always been a paddling event started by Linwood Environmental Commission. In 2016,

Foundation volunteers brought boats to lighten the load of paddlers and to ferry volunteers to the marsh to pickup large debris that gets trapped at high tides. Rather than removing a few hundred pounds of debris each year by paddlers, the event in 2016 removed two tons of debris.

The great success of the Patcong Creek Cleanups inspired Patcong Creek Foundation to clean up other areas frequented by crabbers who tend to leave behind litter or broken fishing gear.

The group began cleaning up Tuckahoe-Corbin City Fish and Wildlife Management Area. Now, for the first time, the group is tackling Steelman Bay. “Organizing clean-up events is a core part of our mission,” explains Lisa Bender, Executive Director of Patcong Creek Foundation. “First of

all, there are a lot of people that want to volunteer, but don’t necessarily know how to go about getting involved. By organizing community events,

people can volunteer and volunteerism leads to stewardship. Once someone participates in a cleanup and sees how much trash ends up in nature, they think twice before littering. And, they spread the word to their friends and family.”

The group of volunteers will meet

on April 21, 2018 in the northern end of the parking lot at Caroline’s by the Bay, 450 Bay Ave, Somers Point at 10:30 AM to start the cleanup which will last until Noon. Volunteers can choose to clean up along the parking lot, Bay Avenue, safe areas along the Longport Causeway, or be taken by boat out onto marsh islands.

ACUA Set to Host Earth Day Festival

his year’s 28th Annual Earth Day Festival will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2018 (rain or shine) at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority, 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township from 10 am until 4 pm. There are lots of free fun, educational activities for everyone. The celebration has many new exciting events in addition to traditional favorites.

Over 150 vendors, crafters, food vendors and exhibitors will be part of the celebration.

Local School Takes on Tech Trash

echnology is the fastest growing waste stream on the planet. Everyday people get new electronics and throw out their old equipment. When old TVs, computers and cell phones end up in landfills, the toxic metals and flame retardants they contain cause environmental problems. Its quickly piling up as our culture and others around the world use more gadgets and upgrade to the new and improved version. How can we begin to turn things around?

Everyone can be part of the solution with very little effort.

Many big box stores have recycling kiosks just inside the front doors to drop off rechargeable batteries, wires, cords, cables and plastic bags. Yet even recycling our e-waste does not always mean we’re doing the right thing. The dirty little secret is that when we take our electronic waste to a

Report: Offshore Wind Farms May Create 75,000 NJ Jobs

T

he construction of new offshore wind farms in New Jersey and other coastal states could lead to more than 75,000 clean energy jobs, according to a new report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) and The New Jersey Work Environment Council (WEC).

Examples in the United States and Europe show that with the right policies in place, offshore wind development can translate into expansive job creation and demand for skilled workers, the report says. With more than 100 gigawatts of offshore wind resources available in federal and Great Lakes waters, elected officials and labor leaders have a chance to turn wind farms into economic wins for their working ports and harbors, communities, and workers. “Offshore wind is a vast clean energy resource that will lead to economic wins for workers,� said Shiva Polefka, associate director of ocean policy at CAP. “When coastal states get the right policy in place for offshore wind, they’re supporting working families and being leaders in the urgent fight against climate change.�

In one of his first actions in office, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order that directs the state to

move toward the goal of generating 3500 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. “Gov. Murphy’s order recognizes the importance of offshore wind development,� said Dan Fatton, executive director for WEC. “This report underscores the major opportunity to not only put people to work installing those turbines, but also to create a regional supply chain that will provide family-sustaining jobs in the manufacturing and distribution industries.�

The report provides a case study of the nation’s first commercial offshore wind project, the 30-megawatt Block Island Wind Farm in Rhode Island, which concretely demonstrates the environmental and economic benefits of offshore wind development. More than 300 local, unionized workers were employed in the assembly and installation of the facility at wages that ranged from $28-to-$40 per hour plus benefits.

That number could surge as other states begin their own projects. In European Union countries, the manufacture, installation, and maintenance of offshore wind facilities supported about 75,000 full-time-equivalent workers in 2014 when development achieved the level currently targeted by states including New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York.

Moyer Power Washing has been in business for just over a year and has grown exponentially. It also gives him the flexibility to be there for his two young children.

“I started with what I had,” says Moyer. “As I made money working hard and long hours, I was able to purchase better equipment that made it easier and more efficient.”

Moyer also went to the internet using social media and the community groups on Facebook to spread the word about his business.

His real break came last summer when he was doing some work for a homeowner in a 55 and over community.

TLANTIC CITY - This is a true story that I had to tell.

It's about a very special man.

On Friday, April 6, 2018, with Brian Kilmeade's help, we raised $ 30,000 in one evening for the "Hurley in the Morning" Charity.

This will enable us to write many much-needed grants for area not-forprofit organizations. That, in and of itself is a great story worthy of honorable mention.

Kilmeade is the star of the number one program in cable television (FOX

and Friends with Steve Doocy and Ainsley Earhardt). Immediately following television, he hosts the daily Brian Kilmeade radio program. That's six straight hours on-air before lunch time on a daily basis. He's also a New York Times # 1 best-selling author.

Kilmeade also regularly appears on "Out Numbered," "The Five" and he serves as a regular substitute host for Laura Ingraham and other FOX News Channel prime time programs. In other words, Kilmeade is a very busy man.

Case in point, on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, Kilmeade hosted his television and radio programs. He came back in the 10:00 p.m. hour and guest-hosted for Ingraham.

Then, at 5:15 a.m. the next morning he was live on-the-air with me on WPG Talk Radio 104.1 FM/1450 AM radio.

This was the day before our joint appearance together at my 10th annual charity dinner. Brian wanted to help promote it the day before. There aren't many media superstars like Kilmeade.

There can't be. It's what makes the very special ones, special!

Now, we're to the day of my annual charity dinner. It's Friday, April 6, 2018.

Again, Kilmeade's day starts at 2:00 a.m. He hosts his television and radio programs. He attends a staff meeting. Without delay, he's next in the limousine, in route to Resorts Casino - Hotel for our joint appearance together.

He arrived right on time for our private book signing, which began at 3:00 p.m. for our 260 invited guests. Kilmeade personally autographed 260 of his best-selling books: "Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans."

From 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Brian met our guests, signed their books and posed for pictures.

Dinner and our speaking and question and answer session immediately followed. This part of

the program lasted until 8:45 p.m. Brian was now in his 20th hour of-the-day.

This is not where the story ends.

Following our charity dinner, Brian immediately attended a private VIP Book-signing for 60 Resorts clients in a nearby meeting room. He knew when his day started that all of these elements were long ago placed on his appointment schedule.

Brian stayed at Resorts for about one more hour. He was invited in advance to stay overnight, however, Brian told me from the beginning that he would immediately return home following our event, "because my children have soccer practice tomorrow morning." It was already basically tomorrow morning!

Brian left Resorts for home at about 11:00 p.m. Brian is more than a fellow broadcasting partner. He's a real friend.

Also, I had promised Brian an Honorarium for his appearance at our charity event. After our event, I shook his hand with "his" check now in both of our hands. Brian said, "I'm not accepting it.

I want it to go towards your charity." I asked him one more time to please accept it. He said, "No way."

When I called Brian and asked him to be our guest of honor and keynote speaker, he promptly accepted. I knew he would be great to work with. However, I had no idea the height of character and humility that he possesses.

His speech before our guests was both humble and inspiring. He talked about keeping the many hundreds of rejection letters that he received before he ultimately achieved success as a national broadcaster.

As I said goodbye to Brian, we shook hands and he said, "Harry, this was text book on how to do an event like this."

I said, that's high praise coming from Caesar!

During the book-signing, I asked Brian about all of the extra air shifts that he regularly covers. He told me that he basically never says no when he is asked to fill-in. He is so grateful for the position that he holds.

I've met many stars in my lifetime.

Brian Kilmeade is one of the most humble, decent and grounded stars that I have spent quality time with. Kilmeade, Doocy and Earhardt were recently selected as the most powerful media personalities in America. This included all formats: Television, radio, print and digital mediums.

Brian is one of the most decent, generous and hard-working gentleman in our business. Brian is a Super Star, who is humble and incredibly engaging.

Brian Kilmeade is a very special man.

My expectations for our charity dinner were very high. Brian exceeded them in every way imaginable. I will next see Brian in New York City this June 8, 2018

at the annual Talkers Magazine, "Talkers 2018" mega event. I can't wait to thank him again in person.

The Beatles Take Atlantic City

A

ugust 30th 1964, the day that The Beatles broke Atlantic City.

In the early morning word got out across the city that The Beatles were coming to town. The source was from the band’s promoter George A. Hamid Jr. Hamid told a DJ that The Beatles were coming to Atlantic City by bus and staying at the Shelburne Hotel.

This news got to the city fast and locals raced towards the hotel to welcome the band and see them in the flesh for the first time. What they had not known was that The Beatles arrived in secrecy right behind their backs.

Just the night before, August 29th, the band took a helicopter from New York City to Barder Airfield. From the airfield they drove to a hotel outside Cape May. Around 2:15 pm the next day The Beatles took a fish truck to the Atlantic City. They arrived at the LaFayette on North Carolina Avenue without incident and stayed there before their show. A whole floor was given to them (the 7th floor). Word soon got out about where they were staying which led fans to surround the building hoping to see the band.

While staying at the hotel John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Every Little Thing, which appeared on the Beatles For Sale album at the end of 1964. During the filming of “The Beatles Off the Record” McCartney was quoted in saying “John and I got this one written in Atlantic City during our last tour of the States. John does the guitar riff for this one, and George is on acoustic. Ringo bashes some timpani drums for the big noises

you hear.”

Fans spent most of the day waiting for the band to come out of their room on the 7th floor. It was not until 6 pm that fans were alerted that the doors to the show were opening at 8:30. In the blink of an eye the line was wrapping around the outside the Atlantic City Convention Hall. People of all ages (mostly teenagers) buzzed and looked in awe at the signs that read “The fabulous Beatles.” For fans in the

South Jersey area this was a dream come true.

The doors opened promptly at 8:30 pm. Fans filled into every free spot. When the doors closed for the show there was 18,000 people in the Convention Hall. The place made its capacity. The Beatles performed their standard 12-song set.

The camera person filming the show could not stay still. They were swaying, shaking, and dancing with the music.

The crowd screamed throughout the whole set. Because it was so loud and crazy you could barely hear the songs that were being played. The Beatles

were also bombarded with the flash from thousands of cameras pointed towards them. With all of these distractions it is hard to believe that the band could do their whole set without failure.

The set went on for about 30 minutes.

After the show The Beatles left the venue in a laundry truck, as their limousine would have given them away.

Their show went down in history as one of the greatest last minute shows in Atlantic City.

The Garden State Comic Fest in Atlantic City “The Light" with Raymond Tyler

here was a time when superheroes were regulated to fighting crime in the Sunday comics, monthly comic books and on occasion in TV shows from the 60’s.

The 21st Century however, has opened the door for comics and sci-fi as wide as the imagination of creators, artists, and filmmakers. So today you can find superhero and comic book inspired TV shows broadcast seven days a week. February is historically a slow month for film releases, yet the Marvel film The Black Panther has beaten almost every summer released film ...that has ever been released.

While Black Panther is still a top ten weekly grossing film Marvel is getting ready for the release of a new Avengers film. Comics, superheroes, zombies are everywhere and anywhere you go.

So it’s only fitting that last weekend The Showboat Hotel welcomed The Garden State Comic Fest on Saturday April 6, and Sunday April 7th. The good people of Garden State Comic Fest produced 2 action

packed days of Comic Convention fun for the whole family at The Showboat.

The Showboat played host to several award winning writers and artists from the history of Marvel and DC including Jim Steranko a gentleman who drew converse considered by many to be the best ever for the heroes Captain America, The Hulk and Nick Fury Agent Of Shield. I enjoyed a great conversation and even got a wonderful keepsake from writer/artist Keith

Giffen who has been a prolific writer for Marvel and DC for more than 3 decades.

Comic Fest also provided opportunity for brand new writers and artists to meet fans and showcase new super heroes. One of the newest and youngest was Bryce Bullock, a 9 year old Delaware child who (along with his father Demitrious Bullock) created the new book series Daddy Longlegs and Inch Worm. Along with the artists on hand there was a special all Kids Comic Con and children under 13 were admitted free all weekend. Comic cons are a great experience for everyone that loves adventure and imagination. There is something for the mild fan as well as people that have fun dressing up like their favorite superheroes, super villains, princesses or even characters they have created themselves.

Show Boat is Back!

Show Boat is just getting warmed up with great events for the spring and summer.

Little Water Distillery Celebrates One Year

hey say time flies when you’re having fun. That exciting reality is alive and well at Little Water Distillery in the heart of Atlantic City. Little Water Distillery, owned and operated by Mark and Eric Ganter, opened its doors in March of 2017 and business has been booming since.

Originally inspired by a birthday gift for the Ganter brothers’ father, one five-gallon copper still began a journey that none of them expected.

What started as a hobby became the seed that grew a thriving business.

The distillery, located on Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City, produces and bottles small batch rum, whiskey, and vodka. The small batch production along with the love and care shown to the production process allows for the flavor profiles of the beverages

to stand in a league of their own.

In celebration of the one-year business anniversary, they did what they always do – cultivate community. The doors were open while guests were able to come take tours and try signature cocktails created by the talented cocktail creators on staff.

The Weekend Philler covered a piece on the celebration while Pan Gravy Bluegrass band entertained the guests.

As a part of the celebration, a bottle of their Whitecap American Whiskey marked with a “One Year Anniversary” cap was put onto the market. Time will tell who opens

Joy Doesn’t Have An Age Limit

don’t have to give back the souvenirs of a life well traveled because the media tells me lies

like A changing body is only good if it’s shrinking Like moms shouldn’t look like they’re actually moms Like grey hair is a bad thing Like smile lines must be filled in Like this body isn’t already beach worthy Don’t try to fix me I’m not broken” This is a piece from my poem, “Don’t Try To Fix Me”. Can I let you in on a secret though? Most people who are actively putting out some sort of positive message are still a work in progress on that topic, myself included.

I wrote this poem before I had

smile lines and now that I actually do, I find myself speaking this poem out loud to myself reminding myself of the same truths that I use to inspire others. I’m not sure there is a time in life when you just arrive and no longer worry or struggle with things.

That’s why I am always reminding myself of my truths because my mind has a great habit of creating lies surrounding my beauty, my worth, and my value here. I know what’s true though. I know that you and I are not defined by our external image. Our worth is deeper than that. The life that we embody is worth exponentially more than any number on the scale or counted grey hair. For a lot of us, we just need to be constantly reminded of that because the standards of the world have been so deeply ingrained in our minds that we need to be at work to break down the lies and replace them with what we know is really true.

This week at happy hour jam yoga, I had one of those experiential reminders of beautiful truth. The playlist theme included nostalgic favorites like Nsync, Spice Girls, and Christina Aguilera. We laughed so hard as tried to vinyasa through out-

bursts of “I’ll tell ya what I want what I really really want!”

By the end of class, we all broke out into a fit of giggles like we were thirteen again. None of us had grown up together but somehow we all felt connected to each other through this palpable joy that filled the room as we were brought back to our youth through the power of music.

Suddenly, the things I had been worrying about faded away and I was

alive in the moment. It was in this moment that the burden of figuring out what lotion or cream or makeup I needed to fill in my laugh lines became unimportant. In a room full of other women riding along with me through this journey of life, none of that mattered. Our beauty was shining so brightly from within that the life in my years took center stage and I thought, “here’s to the next 30 years of this kind of happiness.”

We need those reminders in life that joy is found in the little moments and yes, the years pass and things change, but we can always experience youthful joy. Nothing can take that away. As for the smile lines, if that means love, laughter, and life experience then so be it. In the words of my mom, “Every line tells a story.”
