Wild Orchids

I

have wondered why a place like the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, which is bursting with life, should come to be known as barren. It just seems like a mistake.

However, there is a reason why the million or so acres of protected forest are known as the Pine Barrens. Colonial farmers, who planted traditional crops on freshly cleared forestland, were not happy with the results. It looked fertile, but the sandy, high-acid soil did not yield a good harvest.

These pioneer farmers declared the area barren and abandoned their homesteads. They are long gone, but the name Pine Barrens has stuck around to this day.

The same infertile soil conditions that earned the Pine Barrens its name are perfect for orchids and a group of plants called heaths (Ericaceae).

Heaths include cranberry, blueberry, laurel, and huckleberry plants. The local economy evolved to work with what the forest had to offer. These industries include: cranberry farming, blueberry farming, moss gathering, logging, bog ore smelting, and glass factories supplied by local sand that

melted into some of the clearest natural glass on the continent. Several of these industries have faded, but the vibrant, intrepid orchid still blooms over the rusty bog ore forges.

There are thirty varieties of orchids that bloom wild in Atlantic County. The different varieties blossom in waves beginning in late April and continue to mid July. There are several orchid societies based in southern New Jersey, which offer activities for the avid orchid enthusiast, including searching for and reporting rare species. For those who just want a peek at one of our local wonders, there are nature walks and hiking trails through orchid hot spots offered by South Jersey parklands. The wild orchids in bloom now through May are: Southern Twayblade, Whippoorwill’s Shoe, Whorled Pogonia, and Dragon’s Mouth.

An authentic bit of Piney folklore concerns one of the varieties of orchid on the current blooming schedule, the one called the Whippoorwill’s Shoe. As the tale goes, when the days start getting longer and snow is but a dream, as the taffy-colored sunset dims, and twilight spreads her wings, the whippoorwill starts calling, call-

ing, calling. All night it goes on calling, until the morning light. Then tucks into a leafy nest upon the ground and watches, watches, watches. Motionless it watches. It watches for a plant to sprout. A plant that bears a magical bud the bird will wear upon its feet to take away its every care.

Because of this story, it became a local custom for children to stroll into the woods where whippoorwills were

heard, to seek the pink shoes that the bird coaxed into bloom, the same as some might look for a lucky four-leaf clover.

So… the next time you hear a whippoorwill, imagine it hopping around in pink fluffy bedroom slippers and it will be sure to bring a smile to your mind.

Surfers Share The Waves With Seals

hile the most common large mammals found on our beaches during the are humans, winter and spring offers the potential glimpse another beach loving creatures, Seals. They typically migrate to New Jersey when the ocean water temperature dips below 45 degrees.

Bob Shoelkopf, executive director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, said the number of seals reported in New Jersey can range from a couple to hundreds. Typically, they leave in May and June, but some stay for the summer. It’s believed that they are growing more accustomed to the warmer water.

One problem in recent years is people approaching and being too comfortable around them. He reminds and warns people to stay at least 200 feet away from them.

"They are still wild animals, they do bite," Schoelkopf said. "They need to come up and dry off on the beachfront in the sun and warm up their body and get the oxygen back into their blood."

If people are able to take pictures from long-distance, Schoelkopf urges them to send the photos to his facility. There, they will be able to identify the species of seal and look for any possible tags, which could assist in learning more about their migratory patterns.

hey say March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb, but this year March seemed to roar the entire month, especially in the form of nor’easters, with one coming nearly every week. As we finally move into April, I think we are all more than ready for some warmer weather and sights of spring.

For our family, April means Autism Awareness Month. Our oldest and only son, James or “Jamie” has autism and is turning 24 years old next month. Jamie is on the front edge of the tidal wave of autism. When he was diagnosed in 1996, we were told autism was rare and was only seen in 1 in 500 children. Today, in New Jersey, 1 in 41 children are diagnosed with autism. That is the highest rate in the country and a huge increase. Why? No one can seem to agree on that. Some say it is better diagnostics and some say it is the toxins in our environment. Others say it is because the schools in New Jersey identify and provide better services than other states. It is most likely some of each, along with reasons yet to be identified. Autism is still diagnosed solely upon observation. There are no blood tests or cat scans to identify it.

Scientists know there is a genetic component, but that autism is not solely genetic.

Chances are that autism has many different etiologies yet to be identified. Over 20 years have gone by and there are still more questions than answers.

However, in those 20 years many things

did change that make Jamie's life better everyday. Most people did not know what autism was when Jamie was young. Today everyone knows what autism is. Most people are close to someone on the autism spectrum, whether it is their child, a neighbor, a coworker, cousin or friend’s child. There are recreational programs and support groups readily available.

The school districts have specialists and programs in place to provide an effective and meaningful education. Our children are integrated into our communities, schools and workplaces at an unprecedented level.

Technological advancements are assisting people with disabilities in many ways, helping them to reach their potential and engage with others. Even Hollywood is portraying people with autism. The focus is no longer on the disability, but rather on the capability, looking at where their passions and skills lie. There is no doubt that the world is a friendlier and more understanding place than ever before.

We never would have chose autism for our son, and I have to admit that everyday it is painful to watch him struggle so much, especially with anxiety and communication.

We tried to help him and teach him in every way possible. But the truth is, he has taught us a lot more than we have been able to teach him. He taught us patience, endurance and truly unconditional love. He also taught us that how you treat others matters so much more than what is in your bank account or any fancy car.

Lately Jamie has become interested in making friends so he will often walk up to strangers when we are out and say “Hi I'm

Weather with Nor’Easter Nick

Jamie" and put out his hand to shake. 99% of people are incredibly kind and responsive too him. He has an odd passion for Dunkin Donuts and he looks forward to going everyday. Although he would never eat a donut, he loves the colors, atmosphere and he will tell you that the 20 ounce bottle of soda at Dunkin Donuts is much better than the exact same one purchased anywhere else. Although Bob and I felt a little embarrassed by this we went along with it because hey, we like coffee and donuts. We are continually amazed by how incredibly kind the staff and customers are towards Jamie. Also it has shown us loud and clear, that kindness matters more than anything else.

All of the the changes we have seen in the last 20 years give us great hope for where we will be in another 20 years. Hope is very important and it keeps us going even in the most difficult of circumstances. Jamie's teen years were challenging, to say the very least.

There was a point where I felt hopeless and it was one of the darkest hours of my life.

When I found hope again I got a tattoo of the word on my wrist to remind me. I would have tattooed it on my heart if I could of, because without hope, the world is a very sad and dark place. Keep your hope for today, tomorrow and always. Spring also shows us that no matter how cold and dark the winter, the sun will come again and the flowers will bloom.

hope everyone is as eggs-cited for Easter as I am. Luckily weather-wise we are going to catch a bit of a break. What do I mean by that? Our pattern is going to relax.

The blocking mechanism that has driven cold air into the mid-atlantic is breaking apart. High pressure from the south will be allowed to build which will translate to warmer temperatures. How about 70+ on Thursday? Yup,that's coming.

Get out and enjoy. Winds shift out of the south and southwest which pumps up the mercury on our thermometers. There is a little bit of a catch. What do I mean by that?

Wind direction dictates exactly what we see. Since the ocean temps are only in the lower 40s any wind coming across

that water will make portions of the area cooler than others. For example: I expect Hammonton to get to 70 on Thursday while places like Atlantic City and Brigantine may struggle to get to 50. Happens all the time in the Spring.

Easter weather is looking eggs-cellent. Nowhere near as hot as last year's record setting 88, but very pleasant.

I'm shooting for upper 50s. We should remain dry. Models are hinting at the cold air pouring back into the region

by Monday night at the same time as a system passes through to the south.

Frozen, wintry weather? Possible. Don't write off Winter weather just yet. It can snow through mid-April in South Jersey.

This may be one of those years we are still talking about snow through the first week. Keep an eye out for it all.

Hometown Heroes: Robert Pettyjohn and Kim Shurig

obert Pettyjohn and Kim Shurig started out strangers on a NJ Transit train.

But they wound up saving a woman — and possibly getting her life back on track.

Each was headed home to Atlantic City on Feb. 26, when a woman on the train went unconscious from what turned out to be an overdose.

As the train got to the Hammonton stop, Shurig noticed the woman turning blue, and started calling for help.

“Everyone kind of just stood around,” she said.

The man who was with the woman ran away, she said.

But asleep with headphones in his ears, Pettyjohn heard Shurig yell.

“Thank God you have a big mouth,” he would later tell her.

Having trained in CPR as part of his job with Harrah’s Atlantic City security, Pettyjohn quickly assessed the situation and realized he had to step in.

Shurig was already trying to get the woman on the ground. But when that proved too difficult, the two decide the seat would have to do.

“I’m just going to have to press really hard and hope I don’t hurt her,”

Pettyjohn said he thought as he began doing chest compressions.

Shurig did mouth-to-mouth.

“I heard her snoring and realized she was fine,” Pettyjohn said.

But the woman continued to drift in and out of consciousness as the two talked, trying to keep her awake.

A few minutes later, EMTs and paramedics arrived with naloxone, Shurig said. It took four doses, she recalled.

“After six or seven minutes, out of nowhere, she said, ‘Hi,’” Pettyjohn said of the woman. She told them she was fine.

“Honey, no you’re not fine,” Pettyjohn told her.

Shurig said the woman didn’t want to go for help, but she was able to convince her. Now, the pair hope the woman gets the help she needs.

Pettyjohn said he hadn’t even planned to come back on Monday night’s train. He had been visiting his mother and brother in Pennsauken, and was going to wait until Tuesday to come home since that’s when he went back to work.

Actually, he was set to move out of Atlantic City three weeks ago, but

that got postponed until this coming Saturday.

“It was just crazy how everything worked out,” he said. “Something just kept telling me go home. Who am I not to listen to the Holy Spirit?”

And, of course, to the call of a stranger on a train.

Shurig has checked up on the woman and learned she did decide to go to rehab. Now she’s hopeful that they were able to give the woman a new start.

“I told Kim, thank you for being loud,” he said.

“He really did the work,” said Shurig, who is also Food & Drink editor for Shore Local Newsmagazine. “Doing compressions was a lot.”

“It just felt good to be able to assist and help somebody,” Pettyjohn said.

“And Kim was basically there with me the whole way.”

Spring Cleaning: Preparing for a Minimalist Summer at the Shore – Part 1

pring cleaning signals fresh new possibilities. Windows are open, curtains are washed, dust is removed, floors are polished, and

maybe even a garden is planted. Space is reconsidered, made more efficient and happy.

I, myself, began my spring cleaning already this year. This time around, I decided to not only take my home into account, but myself as well.

I saw a documentary on Netflix a few months back that has stuck with me.

Minimalism: A Documentary about the Important Things is a film with a simple idea that is extremely powerful. It asks the viewer to take into account all the stuff that is accumulated over time, which I did. I stepped back and took a good look at all the items in

my home: the guitars, the CDs, the DVDs, the giant television, the subscriptions to magazines I hardly read, the junk food – all of it.

At that moment, I realized, I could get rid of 99.9% of this stuff, and it wouldn’t affect me in the slightest. Take the guitars, for example.

I have seven or eight of them. I only use two on a daily basis, and there is a few I haven’t touched in years. Why is this? Because at one point in my life, these instruments were going to bring me happiness.

I’d tell myself, “just one more guitar, one more pedal, one more amp, and I’ll be as good as Steve Vai or Zakk Wylde or Joe Satriani.”

And it never happened. I never became as good as any of these guys because I’m me, and I can’t help being anything but me. The only real music I can make comes from my heart, my mind, and my fingers – the instruments are just tools to help me get to where I want to be.

I could go on about DVD’s I’ve only watched once, CDs I’ve only listened to once (or never at all), food that goes to waste in the refrigerator and has to be thrown out – the list is endless. Suffice it to say I realized my spring cleaning this year was going to be a much more extensive than I realized. It’s a feeling that is overwhelming at first, but then becomes freeing soon after. I am now free from all the clutter that gets in the way. I can focus more on relationships that are important to me. I can focus more on my mental and physical health. I can focus on the music I want to make and the books I want to read and the garden I want to plant. The domino effect caused by becoming a minimalist is amazing and almost instantaneous.

But where to begin? Everything I have collected over the years has built up into a

mountain of annoyance. I remember dragging this stuff from one apartment to another, dreading the fact that when it comes time to move again, the process will be just as bad as the first time. I had so much stuff that I had to keep some of it at my parents’ house because I simply didn’t have the room to store it. What a crazy concept! So I decided to keep it simple: I’d begin with one group of items and after I was satisfied that only the bare essentials remained, I’d move on to the next group of items. For me, the first item was clothes.

T-shirts, jeans, dress shirts and pants, sneakers and shoes – enough items to clothe an entire family, and I only wore a quarter of it.

It had to go. And I have to say, the more trips I took to the donation box, the freer I felt. I went from feeling anxious about getting rid of a certain shirt or a certain pair of pants in case, one day, I’d want to wear it to be itching to give it up, to move on.

The point of all this is not to get rid of everything. That would be ridiculous. For example, I have a very large collection of books, but these books give me pleasure and make me happy. Getting rid of my books would be a deprivation, and this isn’t about depriving oneself. It’s about shedding off the unneeded layers in order to get to what’s vital and absolute – what makes a person a person. Think about it this way: everything a person buys, excluding the ones of necessity, is thought to hold happiness. How many times have you gone on Amazon.com and ordered something and couldn’t wait till it arrived at your house?

The anticipation brings an ephemeral pleasure and, for a little while, makes you happy.

But when the item actually shows up on your doorstep and the box is open and the packing peanuts are all over the place, the excitement slowly begins to dissolve, and you are back to square one.

My spring cleaning this time around is going to be focused on lasting happiness, not temporary pleasure: meditation, healthy foods, and the ones I love – three items that will be discussed further in the next part of this three-part series.

Project Prom Connects Students with the Perfect Dress

T

his spring, hundreds of local high school students will be going to prom wearing the gown of their dreams thanks to Project Prom AC. The Project Prom initiative started in 2015 after a family had asked for a dress on Facebook. Since then, the organization has matched more than a thousand girls with the gown of their dreams, thanks in conjunction to the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and various community leaders who offered dozens of free and gently used gowns of all sizes, colors and designs.

Last weekend, students and parents lined up inside of Kensington Furniture in Northfield where more than a dozen volunteers were assist-

ing in the process of selecting the perfect dress. Hundreds of gowns were made available for the girls to choose from, along makeup donated and a variety of shoes, scarfs and tables full of assorted glittering bling such as earring and necklaces to match their attire.

Every year, Project Prom sets up shop inside Kensington Furniture, where they store and manage the thousands of dresses that have poured in over the years. Michael Grossman, owner of Kensington, understands how important this event is for the local community, and is humbled by its importance.

The goal for Project Prom is to ensure that area students in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties have that special dress to wear. Rene says it best, “We’re just making dreams come true.”

Thanks to the generosity of community members, families and businesses, Project Prom has collected more than 1,700 dresses for South Jersey girls.

Many of the dresses were proudly donated from local vendors. Together, Dress 2 Impress, Tesi Bridal and Wedding Belles Boutique ended up donating more than 120 dresses. Kelley’s Landscaping and Atlantic City Linen Supply provided their services to assist in the efforts in making fitting rooms, which were completed with mirrors and lighting.

While the 2018 campaign might be over, fundraising and collecting for next year is set to begin soon, and they are asking for the communities help to ensure a successful effort. Job Fair for Veterans - “Bet on a Vet” The Casino Control Commission is partnering with the American Legion and the State Parole Board to help veterans find jobs in the casino industry. The three organizations will sponsor a job fair on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the casino commission’s offices here.

“There are more than 1,500 jobs

available right now and with the potential opening of two more casinos in several months there are several thousand more on the horizon,” said James Plousis, chairman of the Casino Control Commission. “I have spoken with casino executives and every casino and each license applicant will have representatives at this job fair and are committed to providing job opportunities to our veterans,” Plousis added.

“We want to encourage our casinos to bet on a vet,” said Bob Looby, Veterans Affairs Coordinator for the State Parole Board and New Jersey Employment and Homeless Chairman for the American Legion. “Veterans and those who are currently in the military have served our country and we are always looking for ways to express our gratitude for their service,” he added. Looby said representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and other organizations will be on hand to provide additional information and assistance to veterans. Plousis, a former chairman of the State Parole Board, said that agency had partnered with the American Legion to help parolees in the state who had served in the military to find jobs and those efforts were

quite successful. “When I joined the commission I saw an opportunity to assist the American Legion in its efforts to help our heroes,” Plousis said. The job fair opens at 9 am and runs through 3 pm at the commission’s offices at Tennessee Avenue and the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.

Writing about food to be as rewarding as eating it

I

n October 2017 Cindy and Bob Fertsch of Shore Local News magazine signed me on as their Food and Beverage editor. My first review took me three full days to write as I struggled to get every word right. But I knew I had found my calling. I found writing about food to be as rewarding as eating it.

I am not a chef, nor even a trained cook(for the record I am a professional bartender), but want to always keep my hand in writing, marketing, and social media for local restaurants.

I love the local food scene. I follow local restaurants that do their own social media. I enjoy getting their news, and I love looking at good photos of food. When you’re a full-time editor, looking at words all day long, it’s hard to get psyched about reading more, even if it’s something – like food – that really interests you. Don’t get me wrong I still get excited at the prospect of visiting a new restaurant and telling people about it in way that is both informative and entertaining.

Food media is something of a different beast, often focusing on the joy that comes from cooking and eating incredible things. Yet the industry nevertheless has its critics and I feel I must remind people all too often: if you needed a professional qualification to cook, human beings would have fallen out of the evolutionary

My first culinary mentor was Ed Hitzel(and also like a second dad to me) Under his tutelage, I wasn't exactly Mastering the Art of French Cooking, but I was getting a pretty solid foundation of culinary technique. What's more, because Ed was such a nurturing guide, I began to develop a confidence and he gave me the infamous nickname of Kimmie Kocktail. I looked forward to my weekly contributions on his Table for One Radio show. I enjoyed laying the magazine out and reading all the contributors writings the late nights and deadlines and Still, I didn't make the connection to my writing. Even with Eds encouragement, I’m just sad he isn’t here to see my published articles. I hope I have made him proud.

I never intended to be a food writer. But perhaps the truth is that everything in life that matters – in the professional arena as with affairs of the heart – cannot be planned.

Easter Events Mark Start of Season in Ocean City Egg Hunt, Sunrise Service and Fashion Promenade Scheduled Dressed Gentleman, Best Dressed Woman, Best Dressed Couple, Most Unusual Bonnet, Best Easter Bonnet and Best Dressed Family.

Ocean City’s Easter Fashion Promenade takes place with judging at 1 p.m. Sunday (April 1) in front of the Ocean City Music Pier on the boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. The annual event pays tribute to an era when families showed off their finery during strolls on the boardwalk.

Anybody is welcome to enter the free event, and no advance registration is required. Awards will be given the following age categories: newborn-to-2, 3-to-5, 6-to-8 and 9-to-12 (everybody wins in these categories). Other divisions include: Best Dressed Teen Male, Best Dressed Teen Female, Best

The Philly Keys will return to Ocean City with their hit dueling piano show to start the festivities at noon Sunday. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for photographs after the Promenade.

Ocean City’s Easter events start at 6:30 a.m. Sunday with a nondenominational Sunrise Service on the Music Pier. The speaker is United Methodist District Superintendent Brian Roberts. Music will include:

Jeff Seals on piano, Jack Melton and Laura Olivero on trumpets, and seventh-grader Treasa Hayes as a soloist. Participants include Mayor Jay Gillian, Sr. Joelle Thren, Pastors Mark Bruesehoff, Terry Lothian, Elizabeth Mallozzi, Larry Oksten, John Sheldon and Marcia Stanford. All are invited to attend.

The second of two Great Egg Hunts on the beach starts promptly at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (March 31). The free annual event invites children ages 7 and under to search for 100,000 eggs scattered in the sand and stuffed with candy and items from local merchants. Separate areas are set up for different groups: 2-and-unders (11th Street), 3-year-olds (11th Street), 4- and 5-year-olds (12th Street), 6- and 7-year-olds (13th Street), and special-needs children (14th Street).

The event is sponsored by the Boardwalk Merchants Association.

The rain date is Sunday, April 1.

Arrive early or on time, as the hunt often goes quickly. Remember that the 34th Street Bridge is under construction and limited to an alternating one-lane traffic pattern. The Ninth Street Bridge will provide unrestricted access. All street parking and municipal lots are free at this time of year.

DOO DAH PARADE (April 14): The Doo Dah Parade was first held in Ocean City in 1986 as an event to herald the end of income tax season. It featured unusual entries like beach chair drill teams and fan clubs of legendary comedians. The parade begins at noon on Asbury Avenue at Sixth Street, proceeds to 12th Street and turns east to the boardwalk, finishing at Sixth Street. For more than a decade, the parade has been anchored by a legion of dogs from the Basset Hound Rescue League.

Margate woman to swim the English Channel for charity

T

hrough all her years of enduring cold and choppy ocean currents and swimming against the tide to the brink of physical exhaustion, Victoria Dolceamore remembers the words of Jim Whelan.

“Just keep swimming,” the swim teacher, Atlantic City mayor and state legislator used to say. “Just keep swimming.”

Dolceamore has heeded that advice for the past 40 years.

Last December, the 50-yearold Margate resident competed in the 30K Morocco Swim Trek, an 18.6-mile three-legged jaunt in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Africa.

In August, Dolceamore will fulfill her lifelong dream of swimming the 21-mile English Channel as part of a relay team for SwimTayka, a charitable organization that promotes swimming and clean water stewardship education for disadvantaged children in waterside communities.

“It is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Dolceamore said.

“Knowing what I know about the

Channel, I just don’t know if I’m ready for a solo swim, so I thought (the relay) would be a nice foundation for me to really understand all that it entails.”

To train for the Channel swim, Dolceamore is currently swimming in the pools at Margate’s Jewish Community Center and the Brigantine Aquatic Center, where she also works as a part-time instructor for the Greenheads swimming program.

In May, she will start swimming in the cold water of the backbay. In June, she will move over to the rough ocean surf off Longport’s 35th Avenue, where she will tr ain with help of Longpor t Beach Patrol Captain Matt Kelm.

She is also incorporating weight training for the additional strength and power

needed to tackle the turbulent Channel.

Dolceamore, an Atlantic City native, has been swimming ever since she can remember. As a young child, she swam in the ocean in Longport and Margate, and at the Mainland Recreation Association pool, where Whelan served as coach.

“My father (Anthony Dolceamore) had always said to me, ‘You can do whatever. There are no limitations on what you want to do in life, where you’re from or who you are.’ As a kid, he used to take me to the Around the Island Swim to watch swimmers like Mike Toy and Cecilia McClosky. He said, ‘Some day you can do that.’”

Dolceamore swam for the Peddie School, Mainland Regional High School and Tulane University. She was the first female member of the Longport Beach Patrol. She was also one of the first local residents to compete in the 22.5-mile Around the (Absecon) Island Swim in 1991, after it was revived as a FIFA-sanctioned international event. Whelan encouraged her to participate.

“At that time, I was young and very optimistic, and I wanted to dream big,” said Dolceamore, who also swam around the island as part of a relay team in 1999.

“That was an igniter for me, a game-changer.”

Dolceamore is an accomplished long-distance swimmer, but she is so much more than that. She is also a classically trained pianist and writes music for movies, with credits that include Lifetime’s “Invisible

Child,” among others . She teaches piano for the Margate Recreation Association and is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Drexel University, with a focus on the cognitive impact music makes in the school environment.

She lived (and swam) in California for 20 years and traveled the world as a recruitment and business development officer for Pepperdine University.

On top of it all, Dolceamore is a mother of three, with 6-year-old twin sons, Massimo and Raffaele, and 8-year-old daughter Valentina.

Her husband, Scott Rosenfelt, is an independent film producer, with credits that include “Home Alone,” “Mystic Pizza” and “Teen Wolf.”

“Music and swimming are my life, other than my children,” Dolceamore said. “Swimming is a life skill. Swimming has helped me have a better understanding of myself, because it’s a time of quiet, it permits you to reflect and think. I’m very competitive, and it makes me more determined to pursue goals and to be more reactive and think about how I behave around my children and influence my children.”

“You can’t just jump in the water and compete, like you can’t just sit down at the piano and be in a piano competition and play Rachmaninoff. It’s incremental growth, there’s no instant gratification. You have to spend time and stick with it, and then you see the fruits of your labor and grow into it,” she said.

Swimming the English Channel is a personal goal for Dolceamore, but doing it for a charity such as SwimTayka makes it even more rewarding, she said.

“I didn’t know how I could parlay swimming into a charity, and to have the opportunity to do that, I jumped on the chance, because I thought it would be a great way to share this work with others. If I can influence one person to find something within themselves or to just be part of something, then I’m happy.”

She will soon be organizing a fundraiser to help her raise the English Channel swim entry fee.

Dolceamore would also love

the opportunity to help revive the open-water swimming community in this area, along with like-minded swim enthusiasts such as Sari Puzio of the Brigantine Greenheads and former Around the Island Swim race director Sid Cassidy.

Whelan, who died last year, revived the Swim with a solo circumnavigation many years ago. If Dolceamore’s efforts and example could lead to the return of the Swim, it would make Whelan’s encouragement even more profound.

“Swimming is life,” she said. “The conditions are never perfect. You may not always perform at your best. The current may be strong and lead you astray, and others will nip at your feet, but you have to keep going, continue your journey and do the best that you can, and just keep swimming.”

n Saturday March 24th, the Ocean City Humane Society hosted their annual fundraiser event. This year the theme was Grateful Pets 3 featuring the live band Dead Reckoning. The lead singer, Charlie, along with the other artists included in the band donated their time to perform at this sell out event.

The turnout for Grateful Pets was so large that the humane society had to move the fundraiser to a larger space. The event took place at the Somers Point Fire Department. Volunteers provided delicious food and baked goods as well as their time to make the evening a success for the humane society. With over one hundred people in attendance, the room was packed with smiles, laughter, dancing, and fun and even a lifesize doggy mascot! That’s the goal of the Ocean City Humane Society - fun! It’s important for the event organizers that the people who support the humane society aren’t guilted or felt forced into contributing. They want their volunteers and their partners to have fun and be

a part of something special. Heart is the center of everything that they do from their relationships with the community of volunteers to their relationships with their pet friends. All of the events are focused on celebration, friendship, and fun.

The Humane Society hosts a variety of events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for the care of the animals. The Grateful Pets event was created to raise money for the BUD fund, which provides resources for their animals with special needs. Many special needs animals, such as on of their dogs Roscoe who has a severe hip issue, will spend their lifetime at the shelter. As a non kill shelter, care is provided for the lifetime of the animals that don’t find new homes. The BUD fund was created for these special pets to be fed, nourished, loved, and cared for a lifetime.

The Humane Society of Ocean City hosts a variety of events throughout the year for all age groups and interests. The next event is Mini Golf Mania on May 23 at Pirate Island in Ocean City, NJ. Donations, events, and more about the humane society can be found at www.HSOCNJ. org.

t's not unusual to let your attention to healthy eating lapse a bit in the winter. After all, who can see you in those cozy -- and bulky -- woolen sweaters? But spring is here, and it's time to get back out there and show the world what you're made of. Just making a few small changes in your everyday diet can add up to big changes in a healthier, fitter you.

I suggest to my clients to fill on veggies. That means filling up on foods that give you the most bang - or in Nutrition speak, satiety -- for the least amount of calories. It has been reported that eating a large low-calorie salad as a first course may help lower the amount of calories eaten in the rest of the meal. I find that when my clients ate 3 cups of low-calorie salad before lunch, they ate less at the entire meal -- taking in 12% fewer calories -- than when they did not eat a first-course salad. The low-calorie salads included iceberg and romaine lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, celery, and cucumbers, fat-free dressing, and light mozzarella cheese. Remember, big portions make you feel as if you've eaten a lot, even if you're eating a low-calorie item.

First thing in the morning, enjoy a hot cooked cereal like oatmeal. It has about one-fifth the calorie density of dried cereal.

Hot cereal has just 300 calories per pound; dried cereals pack in a whopping 1,400 to 2,000 calories per pound. Hot cereal is more filling, It keeps you fueled well into late morning, helping you avoid the 10 a.m. munchies.

Eating a high-fiber breakfast can also help stave off diabetes , heart disease and certain cancers . I do recommend three servings of whole-grain foods daily, USDA surveys show that fewer than 1 in 10 people consume the recommended amount of whole grains.

When it comes to beverages,

green tea is a healthier choice than soda. One can of regular soda has about 140 calories, which translates into 9 teaspoons of sugar. Green tea on the other hand, has 0 calories (if you skip the pre-sweetened variety). It’s also loaded with amazing antioxidants. Substances known as catechins, which are found in green tea, may stimulate the body to burn calories, in turn decreasing body fat. These same catechins are also rich in anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, giving green tea even more of a punch. An added bonus: Green tea can be as satisfying as a frosty cold soda.

Look for different varieties; pear green tea, for example, served iced, will make a tasty and refreshing drink in the hot months to come.

How about chocolate? Yes I said chocolate. One square of good-quality chocolate can go a long way in curbing cravings.

New Jersey, District 2 Has Been a Wild Ride

I

t took Hirsh Singh a full eight rounds to establish himself as the front-runner for the Republican Nomination for The United States House of Representatives in New Jersey's District 2. And, it took a second ballot in the 8th County Contest to do it.

Singh won the most coveted endorsement of them all on Saturday morning, March 24, 2018. The day before, he won the endorsement of the Camden County Republicans.

Prior to his two-game winning streak, Singh had lost four straight County Conventions to rivals James Toto, Brian Fitzherbert, Sam Fiocchi and Robert Turkavage. The nominating process had become wide open.

Then, when it counted the most, Singh delivered. He opened and closed with two-game winning streaks.

The Atlantic County Republican Convention is the biggest of them all.

It is the last in the Convention Season for a reason. It represents more than 1/3 of the votes needed to win the Nomination in the Tuesday, June 5, 2018 Primary Election.

Singh is now clearly the Republican front-runner. He did it the hard way by securing two consecutive wins.

Followed by four straight losses and finishing with two straight wins.

There has never been anything like it in District 2 history. Five different candidates won County endorsements in five consecutive Conventions. It's something that we'll probably never see again in our lifetime.

It also guarantees that Singh is now staring at the prospects of a certain contested Republican Primary Election.

I have spoken with and confirmed that Fitzherbert and Turkavage will not be leaving the race and they will challenge Singh all the way through June 5 2018.

This is certainly their right, but, it

also plays directly into the hands of Senator Jeff Van Drew, the presumptive Democratic Nominee. Van Drew will be difficult to beat on a level playing field.

Now, Republicans will be forced to burn cash and potentially each other just to earn the right to challenge Van Drew in the November 6 2018 General Election.

Fiocchi and possibly Grossman may also continue in a contested Primary. It will be two-to-four challengers taking political pot shots at Singh. Now that the process pivots to actually earning votes from the electorate versus a relatively small number of Party insiders, it's a whole different equation.

Toto did something very politically smart at the Atlantic County Republican Convention. He knew he could not win and he smartly dropped out and threw his support behind Singh. This will give him political goodwill now and in the future.

Toto will most likely seek the Republican Nomination for the New Jersey State Assembly next year. Toto's Party loyalty and good sportsmanship will be remembered next time. It was the political play of the week. He took a busted hand and turned it into a straight flush. Well played by Toto.

The County Convention process has been the most collegial in local history. Besides an aggressive written communication from Grossman, attacking Turkavage as a "Never Trump" candidate, incredulously, not a single negative tactic was used by any of the candidates.

That's not to say that there were not dirty tricks. Cumberland County did not allow Fitzherbert to even be considered. That was disgusting and uncalled for. Also, Camden County didn't allow allow all of the candidates to even speak before secretly deciding to endorse Hirsh.

I've always been a strong believer that the political system can usually get the result it wants. They should at least make it look fair. Because of these and other dirty political parlor games, you can expect to see acrimony during the Republican Primary Election campaign going forward.

It's inevitable. When more than one person wants the same thing and they're willing to fight for it ... it is sure to get rough. This once again plays right into Van Drew's hands. Van Drew will win all eight County Democratic Party endorsements.

Just as important, Van Drew has no "political blood" on his hands and he's not said a bad word about any of his

Democratic opponents.

These are just some of the things that can happen when a seat has not been open for nearly 25 years. It's understandable at every level. People genuinely want it. They're ambitious people by definition.

When they're a school board member, they want to be a councilman. Next stop on the shopping list is Mayor, Freeholder, Assemblyman, State Senator, Congressman, United States Senator.

It's called ambition. It exists in every vocation; yet, perhaps none more so than in electoral politics.

It's human nature to want something and strive to achieve it. Then after capturing it; they want to seek the next level of advancement.

Another earned credit in the Republican process has been John Zarych.

He first explored and then entered the race simply because there was no viable challenger to take on Van Drew.

Zarych made everyone in this race better. In a "Hurley in the Morning" exclusive, Zarych confirmed on Monday, March 26, 2018 that he was officially leaving the race. By any fair measure, Zarych accomplished his stated goal.

With Democrats needing to capture a net gain of 23 seats in the mid-term elections to win the majority, Zarych did not want to see the District 2 seat handed away without a fair fight. This made sense at many levels. Van Drew would have had a walkover victory.

This would have allowed national Democrats to fund and focus on other Districts in pursuit of their magic 23 pick-ups for winning the majority in The House of Representatives.

No doubt, Van Drew remains the heavy favorite. But, likely opponent Singh will be relentlessly aggressive and have millions of dollars to spend against Van Drew. The national Democrats will now have to play New Jersey, District 2 as a serious contest.

Hartley, the park’s vice president, stressed that the decision to replace the roller coaster wasn’t a safety issue but a quality issue stating, “The number one question that we receive is wheth-

er or not the passengers safety was in jeopardy. That wasn’t the case. The roller coaster passed state inspection as well as our inspection standards. Safety wasn’t an issue. The ride was just a little too bumpy to meet our quality standards and expectations. We want our guests to have the best experience possible.”

Department of Community Affairs representatives have explained that the issue was caused by a slight misalignment between the cars and the magnetic drive system that propels the vehicle.

This slight alignment issue caused for the ride to be bumpier than expected for the new roller coaster.

The Gale Force roller coaster made its debut summer of 2016 with the decision to take it down in the Fall of 2017.

The ride’s manufacturer, S&S Sansei Technologies, is in the process of fully replacing the ride at no cost to the park.

Hartley is hopeful that The Gale Force will be roaring through the park, better than ever, by the first week of May 2018.

Scars Revealed

I

find it most remarkable that out of all the ways Jesus could have shown Himself to His disciples after His resurrection, one of the ways He chose was to deploy His wounds. He found it necessary to show them “His hands and His side” (John 20:20) as the evidence of His presence. Why would He do that?

He could have shown Himself in bodily perfection, but instead He chose to show proof of His humiliation. His scars told the story of His suffering for our saving.

It is true that every scar has a story to tell, but the bearer must be willing to tell it, with healing of course as the prerequisite.

Therefore, consider the message that Jesus wanted us to carry forward personally--a message that should spring forth from His obvious marks of mercy that He had endured for us on Calvary.

Now stop for a second and think about the shame and pain that comes with various scars; some scars are physical and obvious, others are emotional and scandalous. Nonetheless, they

come in all forms and sizes, as reminders of something that we have gone through and perhaps even have not healed from. As a result, we often want to conceal what we’ve been through, not wanting anyone to know the history of our agony. Yet with Jesus’ example in deploying His scars, He shows us that it is possible to take what may be shameful, regretful, or painful, and still make it useful.

Likewise for us, because of His grace, we don’t have to hide our scars. Because of His grace, His scars are in fact covering ours. In Psalm 147:3, it states, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Thus, God’s principal work is to heal the wounds of the heart. No matter how deep or how painful, when we allow God to heal us, He takes what may be ugly and makes it beautiful. Again, the world may only see a shameful scar, but God sees a useful story.

A story that tells of hearts being healed, wounds being sealed, and scars being revealed.

So like Jesus, let us use our scars to point to our spiritual healing, a healing afforded to those who have placed their trust in the Risen Lord. Let us do so, that the world may see the resurrection power working in us, for our scars of humiliation can become North Stars of direction.

have been involved in print advertising for over 25 years and have a fine appreciation for inventive, informative and compelling ads. Ads that claim to make you faster, thinner, healthier, happier, etc. Ads also have to nudge the consumer towards their goods or services over that of their competitors. This brings me to the topic of pizzas. Yes, pizzas.

That ubiquitous food group which although containing just a few simple ingredients, can vary widely in its cadre of dedicated followers.

Just the simple question among friends of “Where do you want to order from” can be the start of a spirited debate. Let’s face it; in most communities you can’t swing a cat around without hitting a pizza shop and mine is no different. (Please no letters from cat lovers.) We are fortunate to have a lot of establishments who offer a very good pie. What does this have to do with advertising you might ask? I recently came across a billboard that advertises a restaurant’s pizza as the “World’s Best Pizza.”

I am accustomed to some lofty claims in advertising but this is really over the top. I could see Atlantic County’s Best Pizza, or Best Pizza in South Jersey, Best Pizza East of the Mississippi would be a stretch, Best Pizza in America is way out there. But the World’s Best Pizza?

Apparently if the claim had any merit, pizza in Naples, Italy or anywhere else in the world wouldn’t even stand a chance against this pizza.

Now, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I have had their pizza and it was good as far as cheese pizzas go. I have had better and I have had pizza whose status was only raised by the beer that was consumed. But if you set the bar too high, consumers can’t help but walk away disappointed. I am a big fan of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. Fieri has been around the globe and through our own area as well with stops in Pleasantville, Atlantic City, Northfield, Somers Point and Ocean City. I have seen his shows dedicated solely to pizza. So I ask you, how could he have possibly missed the “World’s Best Pizza” right here in our own backyard?

he Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center honored The AMI Foundation of Atlantic Medical Imaging for its continuing commitment to the communities it serves with their Community Leadership Award during the JCC’s Annual Gala held March 22, 2018. About 150 supporters and guests gathered at The Noyes Arts Garage in Atlantic City to honor The AMI Foundation and helped raise close to $60,000 for the Milton & Betty Katz JCC Scholarship fund.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized for the work the AMI Foundation has done to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve,” said Dr. David Levi, Vice President, AMI Foundation.

“Attendance at the event was a clear reflection of how much The AMI Foundation is valued for its services to the community,” said Katz JCC CEO, Jack I. Fox. “The evening brought an impressive array of business and community leaders together in one place and allowed the JCC to recognize a wonderful organization while raising almost $60,000 for the Katz JCC Youth and Senior Scholarship funds. The AMI Foundation of Atlantic Medical Imaging has made a major difference in the lives of so many through their philanthropic endeavors in our local community. We are pleased to recognize their efforts to make our community a better place,” said Katz JCC Chief Executive Officer, Jack I. Fox.

How to Enjoy Matzo During Passover

riday evening marks the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover which commemorates the Israelites’ escape from slavery. The holiday traditionally begins with a feast called a seder. During the seder, the story of Passover is told from the reading of a book called the Haggadah. For the next eight days, Jews will refrain from eating leavened bread and will instead eat the unleavened alternative called matzo. There are many ways to enjoy matzo during Passover and all year round.

Matzo tastes like a cracker and comes in a variety of flavors. At the seder, matzo is traditionally enjoyed with charoset which is a mixture of chopped apples, walnuts, cinnamon, honey and wine. Matzo ball soup is often served as a first course in chicken soup that can include carrots and onions. If you visit a Jewish deli any time of year, you will always see matzo ball soup on the menu.

I wanted to share with you some of my other favorite recipes for enjoying this Passover staple. If you are a reader of my blog, you know that my

kids are always in the kitchen with me, even more so at holiday time. Apple kugel is one of their favorite holiday dishes to make. Kugel traditionally has egg noodles as a main ingredient. At Passover we replace the egg noodles with apple noodles by using one of our favorite kitchen gadgets, the spiralizer.

We combine apple noodles with matzo, eggs and several other ingredients.

That gets baked for thirty minutes and then cut into squares.

Chocolate Covered Matzo With Cranberries and Pistachios Ingredients

▶4 ▶ sheets of matzo, ▶2 ▶ sticks unsalted butter, ▶1 ▶ cup dark brown sugar, ▶1.5 ▶ cups chocolate chips, ▶1/2 ▶ cup chopped pistachios, ▶1/2 ▶ cup chopped cranberries, ▶1/2 ▶ teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Lay matzo on a parchment lined baking sheet.

Combine butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Once butter is melted, stir constantly. Bring to a boil and cook for an additional 3 minutes until mixture is thickened. Pour over matzo and cook for 10 minutes.Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Let chips sit for a few minutes to soften and then using a spatula, spread chocolate. Top with pistachios, cranberries and salt. Refrigerate for an hour and then break apart. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Instructions

Add 1 tablespoons to the bottom of 8 tumbler cups. In a bowl using a hand mixer, beat the whipping cream at low speed for about 4 minutes until peaks start to form. Add peanut butter and beat for another minute. Add sugar and vanilla extract, beat for another minute.

ello readers, this issue I am bringing you summaries of four movies you should plan to watch this Spring. March has seen a few prominent releases and here are my top four picks.

“Ready Player One,” is based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which was released in 2011.

Taking the helm of the film is Steven Spielberg. The film takes place in year 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse.

People have lost hope. But some

have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant James Halliday.

When Halliday dies, he leaves his fortune to the first person to find an Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS. This ends up sparking a contest that the entire world joins in.

Happy Heart Corner

hat started off as a kids yoga studio in Northfield less than two years ago has blossomed into so much more.

Happy Heart Corner has touched the lives of countless people thanks to owner Shara Gadomski and she is only just getting started. Chances are that if you know someone who has taken a kids yoga, cooking, art or dance class, it has been with Shara. She makes the experience fun and meaningful and our community is lucky to have her.

Shara studied nutrition at Pennsylvania State University and spent many years as a vegan baker, selling her goodies to loyal customers at the Margate farmers market. She later studied Ayurveda at Montlcair State University, completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training at

Grace and Glory Yoga and completed her 200 hour Baptiste Yoga training at the Baptiste Institute.

All of these experiences have led her to where she is today as the owner of Happy Heart Corner, a 1000 square foot facility dedicated to the teaching of kids, tweens, teens and families. Her team offers in-studio classes in yoga, cooking, art and dance.

networks. Her goal is to empower the future leaders of tomorrow with lifelong tools and techniques for compassion and resilience.

Shara is always busy with new projects, but lately a few of her endeavors are really making an impact in the lives of young people. She recently hosted students from Mainland Regional High School to kickoff a new program called Yoga, Mindfulness

and Community Ser vice. During this day of support, compassion and service, she led students through yoga practice and an impactful project of assembling bags to send to families of those touched by the recent Parkland tragedy in Florida. Students came together that day to be part of something bigger than themselves. Shara is providing community service projects with a lasting impact that will hopefully encourage students take what they have learned and continue to serve in their community.

I met Shara last year when a mutual friend who knows that we share a love of cooking suggested that we connect. A coffee meeting led to the creation of a special and fun cooking program that we began offering last summer. We have been lucky to connect with the AtlantiCare Healthy Schools, Healthy Children program. March is National Nutrition Month and all month we have been going into local schools to teach about healthy cooking. We chose a recipe that is healthy, easy and inexpensive.

Our recipe for cauliflower and bean tacos has been a huge hit with students and teachers. Many of

the students who had never tried cauliflower came up for second and third servings! Teaching kids to cook whole foods in a healthy way is what we are passionate about.

Shara continues to try new and innovative programs that are embraced by children and parents.

She offers family yoga at her studio as a way for families to unplug and connect with each other. Her art and dance classes encourage kids to express themselves in new and creative ways. Shara is a true innovator and leader. The Fresh “Look” of Spring

ne of the best things about Spring is the “newness” of everything.

With the season what was brown gradually turns bright green. From the barren earth sprouts beautiful flowers. Trees that were dead suddenly come to life. Spring is about new beginnings. I don’t know about you, but every Spring I take some time to try and look at our flower beds and imagine what I might do differently this year. It’s kind of fun to look at the new possibilities for the flower bed or vegetable garden. Like a painter with a fresh canvas, it’s an opportunity to begin again. If I ever doubt I can do this, I just turn on Fixer Upper or one of those other “home improvement” shows. When you look at something, anything without a pre-conceived notion, it’s amazing what possibilities appear.

Like most everything, I look for the wider application. So, here’s my take away for all of us.

Approaching anything in your life with fresh eyes is a good practice. It doesn’t have to be Spring. Think of something you need to bring fresh eyes to. It may apply to your business, your job or something personal. Turn your eyes away

(figuratively speaking) and come back to the situation with fresh eyes. It may not be easy to do. But by taking a new look and coming at a problem, challenge or opportunity as an outsider with no agenda so to speak, brings with it an opportunity to assess the situation with a new focus and determine a course of action. It really does help.

There have been times when I’ve looked at a situation and asked myself, “How would I approach this if I was an outside consultant being brought in or how would I advise on this issue?

What if I was asked to offer counsel to someone facing what I’m facing?” You might want to also find someone you trust who can offer his or her perspective as well. So, as this new season unfolds, whether it’s your garden or something a whole lot bigger, come at with fresh eyes. Here is your assignment. Walk out of whatever that issue is you’re thinking about right now or the picture you have painted in your mind. The next time you walk back in, do it with fresh eyes and see if things don’t look clearer.

Shore Medical Center Names Beth Huebner, RN, of Egg Harbor Township its January Employee of the Month

or consistently delivering outstanding patient-centered service and embodying Shore Medical Center’s Mission, Vision and Values, Shore is proud to announce that Beth Huebner, RN, of its 5 Hayes unit, has been named the medical center’s January 2018 Employee of the Month.

Huebner joined the 5 Hayes unit in December 2015, and has blossomed over the past two years. Always available and eager to support her co-workers, she recently assumed the role of nursing preceptor in addition to her clinical role. As preceptor, Huebner serves as a teacher and mentor to new nurses.

“Beth can be relied on in any clinical situation,” says Nurse Manager Kelly Duma, who nominated Beth for this recognition. “She is always there to comfort and care for her patients.”

Huebner says the staff and support system at Shore Medical Center are great. “I felt especially supported as a new nurse, and that support continues to this day. I could not do my job without the team we have on

Dr. Rodney Brunson

r. Rodney Brunson’s business is booming and that is not a good thing.

Rather, it is yet another indication of the opioid addiction epidemic, claiming so many lives in South Jersey and throughout the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 64,070 lives were lost to opioid overdose in 2016 alone, up 21% from the previous year. We all know someone or have a friend, a neighbor or a loved one who is battling addiction.

Dr. Brunson is an addiction medicine specialist. At his practice in Northfield, he treats patients who want to detox and he assists them

through their recovery. He sees patients with opioid pain pill dependency, Heroin-Fentanyl misuse and alcohol dependence and abuse.

“Addiction often leads to medical problems like liver disease, heart murmurs, or skin problems. I diagnose and treat those problems,“ explains Dr. Brunson.

While some people still debate whether drug addiction is a choice or a disease, Brunson explains, “Addiction is a primary chronic brain disease.

There are 47-50 genes involved in addiction and recovery is a lifelong process.”

Dr. Brunson emphasizes that he practices science based treatment or MAT (medication assisted treatment).

MAT is considered the gold standard in treating addictive diseases and substance use disorders and Dr Brunson has been using MAT as a treatment method since 2002.

“The goal is for the patient to be abstinent, but in order to get to that point, harm reduction medications are prescribed such as Buprenorphine

or Suboxone,” explains Dr. Brunson.

Additionally, he also often prescribes support medications for associated problems like anxiety or insomnia.

Dr. Brunson is part of the Recovery Force of Atlantic County, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is one of the first in the state. Its goal is to increase community supports that are available to people with addictions.

Dr Brunson is one of only 5,000 community medical practices that specialize in addiction medicine.

He understands that making the decision to seek treatment is a difficult one that is often put off. For that reason, he always accepts non-scheduled walk-in patients.

He states, "Having an eye on the economy after the housing crash around 2008, then with Atlantic county loosing casino after casino I worried about public health. That is, why the public s health suffers with high unemployment. I saw persons and families devastated by the loss of homes and upside-down mortgages, the loss of at least one of a household income with each closing of a casino, These close to home events could only lead to increased stress or anxiety in the family. Financial constraints, bills and foreclosures . Our blue-collar

working carpenters, plumbers, electricians, our dealers HVAC department employees. Mostly husbands or the men that were in these positions now out of work for long periods of time. These men would become the homemaker while the spouse would now become the breadwinner. Not all but most families. Now the children would see the dad at home everyday ( in fact, imagine being out of work for 5 years and your kid then 12 year old knows dad as always being-unemployed and perhaps not seeing him as the hero anymore ) the men begin to have low self esteem depression anxiety. Boredom sets in, the self medicating begins, the drug dealer sees a growing market, alcohol sales are up, nicotine use increases.

At the same time the drugs became stronger ( think fentanyl ) and more addictive. I knew that the community would need more doctors treating addictions. Indeed look around and see where we are compared to 10 years ago. Just try to get in to see an addiction specialist. I am working a lot harder. So unfortunately my foresight was very accurate."

riends and members of the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company hosted their third annual Beef and Beer last Saturday, March 24th. All who attended enjoyed a variety of food and drinks, live music provided by Tribe, and 50/50 raffle and generous donations for the Chinese auction.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event are being used to support the use of the Fire Boat Marine 3. Purchased in 2016, the vessel assists with the dive, rescue and recovery operations along our area waterways and coastlines. The fireboat is the first of its kind in Atlantic County and in Egg Harbor Township and was recently used to assist in firefighting efforts at the former Beesley’s Point Bridge. Demonstrations have been presented at last year’s Atlantic City and Ocean City Air Shows.

Josh Willson, the president of Scullville Fire Company, says its events like

this that brings out the best in our local area. “The community really steps up to make this a success.”

Scullville Fire Company’s thirty five foot vessels is equipped with sonar, thermal imaging and GPS technology.

The boat can also pump over 1,500 gallons of water in one minute and can hook up to two extra hoses.

The Scullville Fire Company relies on donations in order to maintain the costs of maintenance, fuel, equipment and marina space. Their annual Beef and Beer Fundraiser has helped diffuse many of those costs, something that president Josh Willson says is reassuring.

The Scullville Fire Company also organizes a handful of local fundraising efforts in the community. Their annual Terror in the Junkyard event will enter its eighteenth year n October and a community toy drive in December.

Our local waterways are about to expand with visitors throughout the tourist season With boats chartered for pleasure cruises, fishing boats and personal watercrafts providing thrill rides, it is comforting to know that the Scullville Volunteer Fire Department is prepared to assist when necessary.

I refuse to live in a reality where I don’t like myself.

L

adies, we have been groomed to believe that we need to be improving, fixing, enhancing something at all times. We need to be tanning, toning, and dying, plucking, trimming, and shrinking. Everywhere we turn, there is someone, something telling us that we can improve it. Whatever “it” might be.

Life seems like it wants us to be a better mom to a cranky toddler and be a sexy goddess for our husbands at the same time. Life wants us to be carefree and believe we are enough but shrink our love handles while we’re at it. We need to embrace who we are but we need to make sure our stretch marks don’t show. On one

hand, life is telling us you’re beautiful and on the other, we’re given beauty hacks at every check out line. Our social media feeds show us food that we drool over followed by bodies that are filtered to perfection alongside of a diet so we can have that body too.

We are literally bombarded with contradictory messages that we can never and will never be enough. We walk this fine line of trying to be just enough but not too much. Pretty enough but not too sexy. Strong enough but not too confident. The world has molded us to believe that who we are needs to be changed. But things are changing. It’s a woman’s world now and things are changing.

We can create our reality and our truth to fit the bodies and the minds that we carry. We take up this space.

We can make it whatever we want it to be. Who says we can’t?

I refuse to live in a world where I don’t love who I am for all that I am - even on the days when I am messy.

Which who am I kidding? That’s most days! We, as women, are juggling the weight of the world and doing

it with grace. We laugh harder, love stronger, and feel deeper than could ever adequately be put into words. We are the force that holds this world together and worthiness is our birthright. We have the right to be whatever we want to be! We carry our own self worth within our hearts and minds. This world we’re living in can conform to that! We no longer have to conform to it. The messages on the magazines telling me that I need to be more than I am can go back to where it came from.

I am all that I am and I am all that I need to be. You are all that you need to be.

We are women. We are powerful beyond the words and the images that we see everyday. The measure of our strength, our wisdom, and our value is ineffable.

We are worthy and it is time to live courageously in the skin and the life that we’re in.

The Atlantic City Marathon Race Series’ Kids’ Fit Mile Presented by ACCEA and Benefiting CASA For Children Returns Saturday, April 14, 2018

T

he Atlantic City Marathon Race Series is pleased to announce the return of the Kids’ Fit Mile presented by the Atlantic County Council of Education Associations (ACCEA) on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 11:30am.

The event, in its seventh year, is open to children of all ages and will return to the historic Atlantic City Boardwalk beginning and ending at Resorts and Margaritaville. Parents

and Guardians are welcome to run or walk with their children. Each runner will receive a special finisher medal, custom t-shirt and post-race snacks.

Kids’ activities and events will fill the start/finish area for everyone to enjoy. An award ceremony will immediately follow at LandShark Bar & Grill.

Running enthusiasts and all supporters of Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) are invited to participate or attend the

Kids Fit Mile to help support children in need. In Atlantic and Cape May Counties, over 1,000 children are living in foster care due to abuse and neglect. Over 600 of those children have a CASA volunteer, a trusted adult who will advocate for them and be their voice in court until their case is resolved. However, there are still almost 400 children waiting and it’s CASA's goal to have an advocate for every child in care so that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

“We love being part of the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series Kids Fit Mile every year and very much appreciate being the beneficiary. It’s a terrific event that gives the whole family an opportunity to support abused and neglected children in our local community. The proceeds help ensure these children are placed in safe permanent homes as quickly as possible,” said Lauren Crenshaw, CASA’s Director of Development.

ACCEA is the professional association of teachers and other school

employees. Their contributions of the race promote the importance of physical fitness and correlation between healthy bodies and healthy minds. “Promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the year for teachers, students, and community members is one of the many activities that our members enjoy.

Working with the Kids Fit Final Mile allows ACCEA members help instill pride in student lives and ensure active positive healthy citizens for the future, both inside and outside of the classroom,” said Betty Miller, ACCEA Treasurer.

Schools are welcome to register teams for the event. Schools can earn points towards AtlantiCare’s Healthy Schools, Healthy Children.
