Good News for the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City

T

here could not be a greater time in our nation’s history to be investing and pouring resources into our youth.

The Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City is doing just that. With the city’s approval for their most recent expansion, the youth organization will be opening the doors on their new teen center by year’s end. The Boys & Girls Club, now in their 45th year of operation, is an organization built on legacy and leaving a lasting positive impact in Atlantic City.

CEO, Dr. Michelle Carrera referenced the old adage, “it takes a village to raise a child” when referring to the youth program that she is passionate about growing. Carrera and the team at The Boys & Girls Club have a strong belief that to bring lasting change to the community, it must begin with the youth. Which is why they have been

working relentlessly advocating towards the opening of the teen center.

The current club setup only allows the teens to come into the building after six o'clock pm.

Studies show that the trouble that teens are finding themselves in after school hours is happening

will begin taking tours of college campuses starting at grade seven. They will be offered curriculum based programs in leadership, community service, and different career opportunities so that when they are ready to apply for college, they have every tool necessary to thrive wherever their life may lead them.

o you remember that song “To everything, there is a season”? It was a big hit by the Byrds back in the day. As we change the calendar to the much anticipated Spring, Bob and I fumble to adjust to another new season in our lives.

Just when we felt confident we had figured out the complex world of parenting young children and then teens, we blinked and became parents of adult children. That is definitely a game changer and we haven’t quite learned all the rules yet.

Our 22 year old twin daughters came home from college last week for Spring Break. There is nothing that can make a mother’s heart quite as happy as having all her children back in the nest. But spending time together while respecting their space and new found independence, can be a tricky dance.

“Do you want to have a softball catch?” Bob eagerly asks Sarah. Ten years ago that would have elicited a huge smile, guaranteed. Now she doesn't even bother to answer. Later I hear her tell her sister “He still talks to me like I'm eight.” I try to create memorable day trips, but they are not very interested in that either. Mostly I find they just want to chill at home

and catch up on some homework.

Then there is our oldest, Jamie, who is nearly 24 but is developmentally closer to four years old. He fully expects them to watch Disney movies or Spongebob with all the same enthusiasm he has for it. Yet because he is on the Autism Spectrum, keeping everything the same means the world to him and having is sisters home is clearly different. So as his father and I fumble to know what to do and say, he declares they simply do not belong here. “Go back to college,” he exclaims, as I cringe and regret all those years of speech therapy.

You can imagine how much they appreciated that.

The stress escalates, and Sarah and Holly retreat to the sanctuary of their rooms.

Day two goes slightly smoother and

by Day three we bond over taking the dogs to the beach. Soon they will be heading back to college and we will wonder if we spent enough time with them or missed an opportunity. Jamie will be confused that they are missing and ask where

they are, at least two thousand times.

Whether it's adjusting to a new baby or caring for an elderly parent , we all go through different seasons of our lives. Some are smoother transitions than others. Some bring joy and some bring sorrow, but most bring some of each. The only thing that remains the same is the passage of time and the guarantee of a new season ahead.

But unlike other seasons, Spring symbolizes new growth. This issue of Shore Local marks our second anniversary. We are very thankful for the growth and the su p p o r t we have had from you, our readers, our advertisers and our contributors.

We love creating this publication and have exciting plans for its further growth and outreach in the community.

Here’s to no more snow and warm Spring days ahead for us all.

Weather With Nor'Easter Nick

sn't it Ironic" is becoming the theme song of this Winter. Why? We kicked off the season with sunny skies and warm temperatures. We usher it out with yet another nor'easter. Snow 'til the first day of Spring? Yup! We can wipe the sweat off of our brows after this one, right? Well... I'd like to say yes, but I don't see that being the case. I believe there is at least one more coastal storm lurking out there. Why is all this happening? No it's not global warming, but rather a result of the pattern we are stuck in. We can go back to 1958 and 1962 to find a Winter very similar

We set it up for you in February. The cold and storminess was delayed a few weeks but when it came in, it came with fire and fury (or snow and fury). The upper atmospheric driving forces (teleconnections) are stuck in a way where the jet stream dips down to our south allowing for colder than normal air over our region. It also allows for storms to easily spiral up and ride the coast bringing rain, wind, flooding and snow.

I think we finally break out of this pattern by the first week of April. I, for one, can not wait. I'm a huge snow and winter weather lover but enough is enough. Onward we go.

Hometown Hero: Lisa Sodano

I

t all began with a simple trip to the Somers Point Acme. Lisa Hunt Sodano, a Somers Point resident, noticed what appeared to be a homeless man at the entrance who was bleeding from the head. She stopped to see if he was okay or needed help and was stunned by the number of people that just walked right past him.

Since that day in 2016, Sodano has helped countless people and families who are struggling and has formed an organization of approximately 2,000 members, called Loving Families in Need Matter. They come together to

support Sodano’s mission of making sure that local families in need get the support they need. “I feel like it’s my calling,” Sodano said.

Sodano is now partnering with Lifegate Church in Somers Point, where she is their Missionary Leader. Sodano has helped hundreds of Atlantic County residents by providing donated items and by connecting them with others who can help.

Helping is what Sodano does best.

She is a nurse’s aid for in-home care through Easter Seals. She is also the mother of five sons, ages 12 to 25, and has been through more than her share of personal tragedy.

In 2007, Sodano’s first husband committed suicide in front of her and her four children at the time. The day of her late husband’s funeral, she received a call that her home was robbed and then burnt to the ground. In her darkest hour, her community came out to support her with donations. “It was the reason we were able to get back on our feet,” Sodano said.

Sodano is remarried to Gregory Micciolo who has a kindred heart for helping others. He donated a kidney to a friend and coworker years back and has recently been faced with his own

serious health issues. This caused him to lose his job and Sodano to face financial challenges herself.

Regardless, Sodano is still focused on helping others. Loving Families in Need Matter has been collecting men’s used ties and converting them into change purses and glasses cases which they sell for $3 each to raise money to help others.

In partnership with Lifegate Church, Loving Families in Need Matter hosts a back-to-school event in August where they provide school supplies, free haircuts, family activities and necessary toiletries to over 100 children. They also do a similar Christmas event and are now planning a Cover Dish Dinner Family night.

You may wonder, how is the man Lisa first met outside the Acme in Somers Point doing? Lisa is happy to report he is no longer homeless and she considers him a dear friend.

On The Move: History of South Jersey Railroads Bike Path, a six-mile long trail that stretches between Somers Point and Pleasantville, runs along the former Atlantic City and Shore Railroad. This railroad, also known as the Shore Fast Line, operated from 1907 until 1948 and provided service between Atlantic City and Ocean City. Some of the former rail stations can be found along the bike route offering a reminder of the paths history.

outh Jersey has a vast network of bike and walking paths. Many have enjoyed countless sunny days strolling through Linwood or taking in a workout along West Jersey Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.

Decades ago, these bike paths were occupied by railroad cars and trolleys, carrying passengers to destinations throughout the shore and mainland.

Many people came to see the "Ghost Tracks" at Higbee Beach in Cape May after the last Nor'Easter came through.

Atlantic County Toys for Kids Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, March 31st at 1:30pm Steel Peer Beach Atlantic City. The Atlantic County Toys for Kids and Steel Pier will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31st. For anyone up to 12 years old.

No admission fee.

Atlantic County Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, Match 25th from 1-3pm Lake Lenape Park East 753 Park Rd. Mays Landing.

Kids ages 1-8 are invited to join the Easter Bunny at the Atlantic County Parks Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, March 25th from 1-3pm, rain or shine. In addition to the egg hunt, children can also participate in craft activities and enjoy the park amenities.

The egg hunt will start at 2pm and will be grouped by age. No fee to attend.

Nutrition & Diet Connection for Disease Prevention

hat you eat is connected to preventing chronic diseases .

These are my recommendations to help prevent death and disability from major nutrition-related chronic diseases.

This population’s nutrient intake and physical activity goals should contribute in the development of regional strategies and national guidelines to reduce the burden of disease related to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, several forms of cancer, osteoporosis and dental disease. They are based on the examination and analysis of the best available evidence. I try to advise my clients of the connection between Nutrition /Diet and chronic disease. Here are key connections and how to avoid disease or improve

your health through a well balanced everyday diet.

Obesity is the imbalance between declining energy expenditure due to physical inactivity and high energy in the diet (excess calories whether from sugar, starches or fat) is the main determinant of the obesity epidemic. Increasing physical activity, plus reducing intake of foods high in fat and foods and drinks high in sugars, can prevent unhealthy weight gain.

Diabetes risk increases with excess weight gain. Being overweight or obese and physical inactivity account for the escalating Nutrition -Diet Connection for disease Prevention.

Diabetes type 2 risk increases with excess weight gain, obesity and physical inactivity.

Diabetes leads to increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and infections Increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight play critical roles in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Cardiovascular diseases, the major killers worldwide, are to a great extent, due to unbalanced diets and physical inactivity. Risk of their main

forms, heart disease and stroke, are reduced by eating less saturated and trans fats, and sufficient amounts of (n-3 and n-6) polyunsaturated fats, fruits and vegetables and less salt, as well as by physical activity and controlling weight. Reduction of salt intake helps reduce blood pressure, a major cause of cardiovascular diseases.

Cancer - Dietary factors contribute significantly to some types of cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight will reduce the risk for cancers of the esophagus, colorectum, breast, endometrium and kidney. Limiting alcohol intake will reduce risk for cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver and breast. Ensuring an adequate intake of fruit and vegetables should further reduce risk for oral cavity, oesophagus, stomach and colorectal cancer.

Osteoporosis and bone fractures, fragility fractures are a problem of older people. Adequate intakes of calcium (500 mg per day or more) and of vitamin D in populations with high osteoporosis rates helps to reduce fracture risk, so does sun exposure and physical activity to strengthen bones and muscles.

Dental disease is preventable by limiting the frequency and amount of consumption of sugars and by appropriate exposure to fluoride. Erosion of teeth by dietary acids in beverages or other acidic foods may contribute to tooth destruction.Healthy diets and physical activity are key to good nutrition and necessary for a long and healthy life. Eating nutrient dense foods and balancing energy intake with the necessary physical activity to maintain a healthy weight is essential at all stages of life.

Unbalanced consumption of foods high in energy (sugar, starch and/or fat) and low in essential nutrients contributes to energy excess, overweight and obesity. The amount of the energy consumed in relation to physical activity and the quality of food are key determinants of nutrition related chronic disease.

That means less clothes, more sun, and more skin.

It’s only a matter of time before detoxes, recipes for the perfect beach body, and quick fixes begin to show their faces on our newsstands and social media feeds. Allow me to hit you with my recipe first!

5 Easy Steps to Slim Down For Summer: Step 1: Detox negative energy from your life. Flush out the negative thoughts that make you feel like you’re less than beautiful just the way you are. Drop out of the race that you never signed up for. Stop spending your energy comparing your behind the scenes to someone else’s highlight reel. Break ties with people who

drain you. Remember - only you can protect your own peace.

Step 2: Consume more positivity.

Fill yourself up on goodness. Now that you’ve cleansed the negative conversations, there is so much more room in your life for positive conversations. Pick up a book or a podcast, attend a seminar, surround yourself with positive people. Fill your cup with nothing but the best. You deserve premium fuel for your mind.

Step 3: Lift your arms and give thanks for your able body. Thank God, or the universe, or whomever you give thanks to for the able body that you’ve been blessed with. Every bit of your body is worthy of praise and gratitude — just the way it is today. You’re not broken and you do not need to be fixed. Give thanks for all that YOU are right here, right now.

Start a gratitude journal this summer.

Find all the reasons to give thanks for all that you are, all that is, and all that surrounds you.

Step 4: Get Moving. There is life to be lived. Stop waiting until you lose 10 pounds to put on a bikini. Just put it on. Stop waiting until you achieve that next goal to start living life the way that you desire. Life waits for no one.

Today is your someday. Spread your wings and soak it all in today. Then go it again tomorrow.

Step 5: Balance it all with a little bit of grace. Yes, eat those salads, get in those workouts, drink that water.

All of those things are important and valuable but don’t do it for the sake of a “bikini body”. Do it because you love yourself enough to nurture and nourish yourself. Do it because you matter to YOU. And on the days that you eat that ice cream, miss a workout, or have cocktails on the beach with friends, show yourself grace

and love because you’ll never get this summer back. Life is short. I, for one, love me some ice cream as much as I love a good early morning workout.

Keep things in balance and know that today, tomorrow, and every day for all of eternity, you will always be enough.

Ocean City Events FIRST OF TWO GREAT EGG HUNTS SET FOR SATURDAY

The first of two massive egg hunts on the beach between 11th and 14th streets is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24. The free annual event invites children ages 7 and under to search for 100,000 eggs scattered in the sand and stuffed with candy and items from local merchants. Separate areas are set up for different groups: 2-and-unders (11th Street), 3-yearolds (11th Street), 4- and 5-year-olds (12th Street), 6- and 7-year-olds (13th Street), and special-needs children (14th Street). The event is sponsored by the Boardwalk Merchants Association. The rain date is Sunday, March 25.

The second Great Egg Hunt is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31 (with a rain date at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 1). Arrive early or

on time, as the hunt often goes quickly. Remember that the 34th Street Bridge is under construction and limited to an alternating one-lane traffic pattern. The Ninth Street Bridge will provide unrestricted access. All street parking and municipal lots are free at this time of year.

DOO DAH PARADE (April 14): The Doo Dah Parade was first held in Ocean City in 1986 as an event to herald the end of income tax season.

It featured unusual entries like beach chair drill teams and fan clubs of legendary comedians. The parade begins at noon on Asbury Avenue at Sixth Street, proceeds to 12th Street and turns east to the boardwalk, finishing at Sixth Street. For more than a decade, the parade has been anchored by a legion of dogs from the Basset Hound Rescue League. Registration is open for any individuals, groups or businesses who want to participate in the parade. Joining is a great way to bring awareness to your business or cause before the summer season.

MR MATURE AMERICA PAGEANT (April 14): The event is the first and only pageant of its kind in the United States. Think Before Buying a Rabbit for Easter

lease consider this as a public service announcement for rabbits. It only makes sense that during Easter time, the sales of these furry little lagomorphs go through the roof.

Children want to meet the Easter Bunny in person, and some parents are happy to oblige, which is fine. However, what is not fine is how many of these creatures are abandoned soon after. According to a Huffington Post article, 80-percent of rabbits adopted during Easter are abandoned soon after.

The reasoning for this is a simple: people tend to see rabbits as a novelty; not as a living, breathing being that needs just as much love and care as a dog or a cat.

Being a proud dad of a rabbit, it didn’t take me very long to realize how smart, how idiosyncratic, and especially how loving are rabbits.

I find it a privilege to have one as a companion, and not the other way around. I also quickly realized there is plenty of work to do, in order to make a rabbit’s life a happy one. They have specific needs, vital and emotional ones – just like us humans – that are absolutely necessary and essential to perpetuate a long and happy life for them.

And rabbits do have the ability to live for a very long time. According to an article written for Petrabbits.org, an indoor rabbit, taken care of the right way, can live for twelve-years.

The longest recorded lifespan of a rabbit is an incredible eighteen-years. This, of course, all depends on the breed and size of the bunny; however, if you are seriously considering adopting, be ready for a long and rewarding friendship.

When it comes to a rabbit’s diet, there is an unfortunate assumption that has become ingrained in our minds, thanks to Bugs Bunny: if a rabbit has a carrot, he is happy and healthy.

Even though rabbits do love a good carrot every once in a while, this is not the case at all. Rabbits need a vast assortment of foods in order to stay healthy. Carrots really should only be given as an occasional treat, for they contain a lot of sugar. Rabbits need lots of leafy greens, like kale and dandelion and chard. Spinach is good, too, even though mine doesn’t really care for it; though, he will eat it if he knows he’s not getting anything else.

Another important factor in a rabbit’s diet is lots and lots of grass hay. In fact, rabbits should have an unlimited amount of grass hay to munch on whenever they want. Hay is crucial because it maintains their intestinal and dental health.

will not function the way it should, slow down, and eventually lead to sickness and death. So a rabbit should always have access to hay. Some good ones are timothy, meadow, orchard, and herbal hays.

My own experience with my little buddy, Sweet Potato Pancake, has been one of love, mutual respect, and a powerful companionship.

He is very clean, too! A lot of people don’t know that rabbits, like cats, self-clean. A big mistake is to bathe your rabbit. They are very fragile animals and susceptible to pneumonia. So, please, never give your bunny a bath. It could lead to tragic consequences.

Rabbits are also very silent creatures.

Mine rarely makes a peep. Instead, he shows his emotion using non-verbal cues. When he is annoyed with me, for example, he flicks his back feet out as he hops away. If he is scared, he thumps his back foot, which can be so loud it reverberates throughout the entire house. When he is content his ears stick straight up; when he is upset, his ears stick straight back.

These are only a few of the many ways a rabbit communicates.

Another important consideration: knowing that rabbits do not like being held. They are prey animals, after all, and when a rabbit is picked up, instinctually, it feels it is being put in danger, regardless of whether or not it is being done by someone he trusts. They love being pet, though, and scratched behind their ears.

At night, when I am lying on the floor, Sweet Potato will sometimes hop on my belly and hang out for a while, expecting a treat.

There are many, many other things to know about rabbits. They truly are amazing creatures and deserve just as much love and care as a dog or a cat or a bird or any other animal. They make great house pets (no need whatsoever to keep

them in a cage outside) and can offer an unlimited amount of love if you let them. So please, South Jersey, if you decide to bring a rabbit home, know that you are making an emotional investment. Know that these creatures need a lot of love and care. Know that they can offer friendship and companionship. Know that they will trust you with their lives. They can feel pain,

experience happiness and sadness, alike.

It’s sad to say, but many rabbits this Easter will be adopted and then abandoned shortly after. But, thankfully, there are many different resources out there if you are interested in rescuing one (or two). Margate searches for another ‘perfect match’

ARGATE - Students of the William H. Ross Elementary School and their families went all out last week to search for a cure for pediatric cancers.

They did it to honor their classmate Danny Feltwell Jr., a fourth grader at the Ross School who is fighting his second battle with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

A parent of one of Danny’s classmates, Lisa Fineran, who is also a pediatric nurse at AtlantiCare, organized a bone marrow drive, which was held following an early dismissal on Friday, March 16.

But before things got serious, students got to have a little fun and raise much needed funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

About a dozen children who were among the top fundraisers volunteered to have their heads shaved during a morning assembly in the multipurpose room. Even Principal Michelle Carney- Ray Yoder got into the action by getting the back of her long blond locks shaved.

Danny’s classmate Jason Silverstein raised the most money, collecting $1,214 in honor of his best friend.

“I did it because I want to find a cure for childhood cancers, and because my best friend Danny is fighting very hard in the hospital,” he said.

Jason was among those on stage that had shamrocks spray painted on their newly shorn heads.

In all, they raised $6,661 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which is the largest non-governmental funding source for

pediatric cancer research.

While Fineran began organizing the “Be the Match” bone marrow drive to help find a match for Danny, he learned a week before the event that the National Marrow Donor Program had found him a perfect match. He will undergo a bone marrow transplant on March 27.

Although Danny found his match, we are hoping there will be a match for another child,” she said.

Cathleen Smith, 42, a principal at an Ocean City school who filled out the paperwork to be a donor, said that she would be willing to do whatever it takes to save a child.

“No one should have to go through this,” she said. “As a mom, I hope everyone would rally.” There was a steady stream of potential donors filling out applications and donating their DNA. “I’m not one to like being around hospitals, but if I could help save a life, it would be worth it,” she said.

The Be the Match program looks for donors between the ages of 18 and 44, and does not charge for the test, which costs $100. Although older folks can still participate, they are asked to pay the fee for the test kit because the chances of making a match are slimmer, Kelly said.

In addition to the cheek swab, applicants fill our a detailed questionnaire to determine their commitment to the program and get information about their ethnicity.

“It has a little to do with your ancestral background,” Kelly said.

The test kits are sealed in envelopes and shipped to a laboratory in Minneapolis where technicians look at the DNA to see if it matches a patient.

“A perfect match is 12 markers,” Kelly said.

Donors can stay in the registry until age 61, but can drop out at any time. In addition to donating bone marrow, they can provide stem cells through blood samples, and advocate for the cause.

Danny is currently preparing for his

transplant at Christiana Hospital and is undergoing chemotherapy and full-body radiation to wipe out his own bone marrow before accepting the marrow from his donor.

His father Dan Feltwell Sr. said all they know about Danny’s donor is that it is a college-aged male that was found through the national registry. They can learn more about their donor a year after the transplant, he said.

Danny will likely stay at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children for at least 100 days following the transplant as his body accepts the new marrow.

Feltwell said 46 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each day, and more than 20,000 were awaiting a match last year.

“We were fortunate to find a perfect match, and Danny believes that all kids deserve a match,” he said. “Registering means there is a good possibility they can save another child’s life. There is no greater gift to a parent in my situation.”

Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County Names a New Executive Director

abitat for Humanity Atlantic County announces that Amanda McGowan, former Director of Operations will be stepping up as the new Executive Director effective April 1st of this year. McGowan will assume full oversight of the organization, ensuring its future success through the continuation of their mission to bring people together to build homes, community and hope.

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that began in 1976 and is now in nearly 1,400 communities across the United States and in approximately 70 countries around the world.

Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

The organization works toward this vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with people and families in need of a decent and affordable home. The recipient of the home is required to put in 250 “sweat hours" which is labor in the building process alongside the volunteers.

McGowan reports that Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County just implemented a three year strategic plan to build two homes a year.

They are now in the process of finalizing the land acquisition and will soon be accepting applications from families through their website achabitat.org A newly implemented program Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County offers is called “A Brush With Kindness” is now being offered to Atlantic County residents. This is for smaller repairs or renovations to an existing home necessary to make the home safe and accessible for its owners. A ramp installation would be an example.

McGowan began volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in 2011. After Superstorm Sandy in 2012, McGowan became more involved and it was at that time that she recalls being “habitized" or coming to the revelation that this was what she wanted to do with her

life. She had been helping a family in Somers Point whose home was severely flooded. They also had a special needs child who, in response to the stress, was picking at the drywall in his room to a point where it became very dangerous because wires were being exposed.Through Habitat for Humanity they were able to restore the home and cover the walls with plexiglass so the family had a safe home to live in.

McGowan resides in Egg Harbor Township with her husband and four children. Her mission has become a family affair. She reports that her husband and children often volunteer on weekends at the store by carrying, sorting and organizing items.

The Restore at the Shore was implemented as a long term sustainability factor for Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County. It is a home improvement donation center that accepts gently building materials, appliances,

furniture and home essentials. The items are then offered to the public at deeply discounted prices, making home repairs and furnishing affordable.

Donations are accepted at the store located at 2733 Fire Road in Egg Harbor Township or arrangements can be made for larger items to be picked up.

Many people love coming in the shop, whether it is homeowners seeking lower prices, people flipping homes, people that love the hunt of a great bargain or upcyclers that like to refinish and/or repurpose items.

Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County has two fundraisers coming up. The first the Spring Fling hosted by the Atlantic City and County Board of Realtors. It is April 19th at Sophia’s in Margate and tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. The second is the Golf Tournament scheduled for July 27th at Harbor Pines.

4 Rules for a More Organized Home

here are plenty of reasons why people obsess over organization and resolve to master it at home.

Many owners allow their teak patio furniture to age naturally, beginning with a warm honey color and maturing to a pleasant silver tint in about five to six years. For best results, users typically ensure the wood is smooth first so that the stain goes on evenly. The hand is more sensitive than the eye for detecting rough patches, so do-it-yourselfers first run their hands over the chair to find coarse, roughened areas. Using 120 grit sandpaper removes roughness, followed up by a 220 grit product for sanding over the whole surface. Applying sanding sealer and one or more coats of stain enhances the color of the piece. A final top coat of oil, lacquer, or polyurethane provides an excellent finish.

Buying a property as an investment is an entirely different animal than buying a home to establish a residence. However, with the right guidance, anyone can dabble in real estate.

Establish financial goals. Before you even begin looking at properties or put forth the effort of meeting with an agent, you must determine what you expect from the investment. The days of buying real estate and flipping it for a fast profit may no longer be here. However, real estate can provide a steady stream of long-term income. rian Lopez is doing something at Salon Kink in Linwood that no one else in this area is doing, he is transforming the atmosphere of the salon once a month to make it a comfortable and quiet environment for children with special needs. Personal grooming can pose many issues for individuals with sensory issues and Brian saw the need to designate certain hours specifically to meet the needs of this population. He has been overwhelmed by the response of the community and is fulfilling a need by taking some stress away from children and parents.

Brian is a stylist at Salon Kink and also the director of marketing and social media. He works as part of an amazing team which includes owner Belinda Novelli and junior stylist Sabrina Solorzano. They came up with the idea to offer haircuts to children with special needs once a month, on Tuesdays, in hour-long blocks. Entering a salon with loud music and the chatter of customers can be overwhelming to anyone and even more so to those with sensory issues. Not only is this stressful to children, but it is also stressful to their parents and caretakers. Children may also have a fear of hair clippers and Brian takes all of this into account when interacting with his customers. By scheduling clients for an hour-long appointment, he can give them more attention and make them feel comfortable. Brian has earned the confidence of his clients so that they can trust him, even making them look forward to their visits with him.

Brian has been a stylist for five years. He first got involved with special needs children when he worked with the Absecon school system. He taught kids about personal grooming and built a very interactive program with them. He had requests from some of the students to have private

haircuts are being donated to a local charity benefitting children with special needs. This is truly amazing and selfless. Salon Kink is located at 199 New Road in Linwood’s Central Square. The salon is open Wednesday through Saturday and Brian, Belinda and Sabrina are scheduling appointments for children with special needs on one Tuesday out of the month.

This program has been extremely successful with appointments booking up quickly so more days may be added as needed. Bloom Where You are Planted: How to Get Involved in Your Community

s the days get warmer, people grow more and more active. We shed our sweaters and burst into the sunlight like flowers about to bloom.

As spring fever hits, we spark a newly-found desire to get involved in our community.

As we take inventory of our activities and friends, consider how you can get more involved. How do you bloom in your community? Here are my tips and tricks:

Volunteering allows you to make friends, make an impact and make change in your community. If you are new to the area, you can find volunteer opportunities at volunteermatch.org.

Find a local nonprofit that fits your interests and talents, which makes it easier to stay committed. My twin sister Holly volunteers with the Heart of Surfing skateboard program, which offers people with autism a fun opportunity to scooter, skateboard, or

Take a Class Whether it be a gym class or art experience, classes are a great way to get plugged into your hometown.

My mom has been taking CrossFit classes at her local gym in Egg Harbor Township for three years. Now, she

has developed great connections and lives a healthy, active lifestyle. Classes are an awesome way to pursue your passion in a fun, social environment.

Take a painting class, learn graphic design, play guitar, practice yoga or cook a gourmet meal. I’ve always considered myself artsy, so I love pottery classes. If you like combining dance jams and exercise, spin classes and Zumba will be your best friend. Skim through your local newspaper for more exciting offerings.

Join a Club This one may seem a little harder, but trust me, it’s so worth it. Commu-

nity Centers and libraries are wonderful resources for finding all kinds of clubs and organizations in your area. From volleyball to book clubs to knitting groups, there is a club for everyone. My former boss Anne obsessed over her kickball team and would share hilarious stories about their games and team-bonding activities. Fran, a family friend, is an enthusiastic member of her town’s Green Team, striving to make her town more eco friendly and sustainable. Join your alumni network and connect with fellow graduates.

Check out your local library, parks and recreation department, or newsmagazine for upcoming events and activities.

ow is your follow through? In sports, it’s defined this way.

Follow through: to continue one's movement after the ball or object has been struck or thrown.

Whether it’s baseball and the bat, football and the ball, tennis and the racket, or golf and the club, follow through is everything.

It can make all the difference between success and failure. What is true in sports is also true in life.

This past week I participated as one of the speakers at an Ocean City Chamber of Commerce breakfast. Several of us had the chance to share strategies on ways a business or organization can better reach Millennials. Speakers shared everything from statistics and trends to ways to better communicate and connect through digital means and old fashioned one on one communication.

At the meeting, I encouraged those in attendance to take what they learned and go back and apply it right away. I stopped around the corner at a coffee shop after I left the meeting and when I

walked in, I noticed this table of four or five people. They immediately looked up and acknowledged that they had been at the breakfast and really enjoyed what was shared. They looked busy with legal pads and pens writing away between their sips of coffee so I left them alone.

A few minutes later as I was leaving, I stopped by the table and thanked them for coming. They told me they came to the coffee shop to brainstorm and strategize about what they learned.

They told me there was so much going through their heads They had to meet and talk it through. It was so encouraging to first of all know that what we had all shared got them to thinking, But then even more so, that they actually were taking that information and ideas and applying them right away to their business.

So, what have you learned recently that you need to apply today? What seminar, book, podcast, article or conversation has sparked an idea or motivation that you’ve not yet acted on? Don’t put it off.

Now is the time. You can’t make progress with your life in neutral doing nothing.

’m going to make a really bold statement here, are you ready?

You haven’t truly experienced the Jersey Shore until you have tasted the tomato soup at the Varsity Inn in Ocean City. I’m not sure how it’s possible that I grew up coming down the Shore every summer and have lived at the Shore for the past six years and only just tried this soup for the first time. There is a good reason why their tomato soup recently took

son. The restaurant got it’s name because Ocean City used to attract college students in the summer. Customers and seasonal staff began bringing pennants and memorabilia from their colleges and universities to the restaurant and now the walls and ceilings are lined with all of the pennants. It is highly likely that you will find your college or university represented somewhere within.

The Varsity Inn is open daily from 7am until 2pm and has plenty of what you would expect from a breakfast and lunch spot. What you wouldn’t expect is the wide array of healthy options, $5 weekday lunch specials that are a fantastic bargain and an emphasis on local ingredients in the summertime. On one of my visits I had just exercised and was tempted to order French toast or pancakes which were calling my name. Instead I went with the Healthy Morn’ Omelette which they advertise as their #1 seller. This egg white omelette is filled with asparagus, broccoli, mushrooms and lite Cooper cheese and served with a side of fresh fruit. It couldn’t have been more filling or fresh tasting.

During the week they have a Back to the Future menu where prices stay the same at $5. I don’t know anywhere else that you can get that amount of delicious food for such a low price. In the summertime Symonds puts an emphasis on fresh local ingredients that he can get at the Ocean

The front of the restaurant is lined with a counter and seats. In the warmer months the front windows are opened, making it an even more welcoming atmosphere. Bike racks line the outside of the restaurant and water bowls are always out for furry friends. The staff is so friendly, many of them knowing repeat customers by name. Symonds has high standards for his restaurant which he is able to maintain by being there every day.

Even though Varsity Inn has been around for many years, they have done a wonderful job of adapting to the changing times. They recognize the desire of customers to have healthy options. A new salad menu is in the works. They keep their social media channels updated by posting specials almost daily. If you have lived in this area for years and have never tried Varsity Inn, plan a visit soon. It is a very busy breakfast and lunch spot so take advantage of the remaining couple of months of the off-season and stop in.

Singh is an aerospace engineer and a 2017 candidate for Governor.

He wqas part of a long-time held family-owned business and he's a real estate agent.

Fiztherbert is a Defense Contractor Project Manager and Systems Manager. He possesses a distinguished national security clearance level.

Toto is a local elected official and a public works department supervisor. Toto is also a disabled United States Veteran.

Robert Turkavage came within one vote of winning a County endorsement.

He is a retired Supervisory FBI Agent and a retired senior bank executive.

Seth Grossman, Esquire is a former Atlantic County Freeholder and a former Atlantic City Councilman.

candidate; Zarych has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is poised to effectively strike if circumstances warrant.

Zarych has run one of the most interesting campaigns that I've ever covered.

He is attending and speaking at the various Republican gatherings and conventions.

Yet, he is not asking the County Committee voters for their support at this time.

Yet, he is artfully making his case.

Zarych lives his life under a rule that I strongly believe in. You don't lift yourself up by tearing others down. In a unique ... if not unprecedented way, Zarych's approach is working and building him good will.

Mark McGovern is a businessman, inventor and a former Donald Trump for President activist. I continue to acknowledge his participation in this race; but, I see no evidence that he is really in this race in any material way.

The Republican nominating process has been much more interesting then the Democratic side. However, make no mistake about it, all roads still lead to Senator Jeff Van Drew, who remains a prohibitive favorite to win both the Democratic Nomination and the coveted Congressional seat.

Van Drew is not running unopposed, but, it still feels that way. No disrespect to Tanzie Youngblood or Sean Thom. Both are much more progressive than Van Drew.

Van Drew is a near perfect General Election candidate. Youngblood and Thom are hitting him hard that he's not really a Democrat and throwing at him whatever they can.

Truthfully, none of it is sticking. Democrats want to win. That's all that counts.

They need a pick-up of 24 seats to win the majority. Whether it is Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania's District 18, or, Van Drew in New Jersey's District 2. Whatever it takes to win is the Democratic playbook in the mid-term election.

Lamb ran television commercials holding a semi-automatic A.R. 15 assault weapon. Think about that in the current environment in America. Lamb is also unapologetically pro-life. He never once trashed Trump!

Until the General Election process begins, much of this is political "inside baseball." Most people don't even know how it works. The major political parties like it is this way, too. It gives them significant control over who the ultimate Regular Republican and Regular Democratic candidates will be.

President George Washington never liked the idea of political parties in American elections. In his farewell address, President addressed the issue, saying: "However, political parties may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to be-

He is worthy of a brief comment. He has decades of public service experience. Yet, he had absolutely no experience in how the electoral political process works.

He's been a fast study. He marches to his own drummer. Turkavage has been interesting to cover.

here are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history.

Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations

Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting.

Prints can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk.

Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images. Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be careful not to lose or damage the originals.

Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are a variety of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook. There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online. Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes.

This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies.

Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images.

This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information at your fingertips.

The scrapbook also will serve as a good source material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors.

Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby's first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior.

Shore Local Talent: Shaina Gibbs

haina Gibbs, of Linwood, is the owner and operator of Shayleigh Photography, specializing in newborn, baby, maternity and family photography.

Shaina couldn’t tell us exactly when her love for photography started. She says “It’s kind of something that was always there.” In 2012, she took a leap of faith and started her own photography business. Her love for babies and people collided with her love for photography and Gibbs shared ”I couldn’t have chosen a better way for me to spend my days.

I believe that life is a beautiful gift and each fleeting moment is one that should be treasured. To me, photography is more than just taking a photo; it’s a work of art.”

Gibbs takes the time to capture the unique personality of each baby and family that she photographs so that one day when the children are grown, their parents can look back with joy on these treasured moments. She cares deeply about making her home studio a warm and welcoming place with her top objective is to make the client feel

comfortable.

Gibbs offers many different packages and portfolios for her clients to choose from. Her newborn photo sessions are preferably scheduled before the baby turns two weeks old.

Gibbs explained that this is for two reasons. The first is that the newborn attachment is still forming so the infant is less distraught about the separation from their parent. (even if it is only a few feet of a separation) The second is because they have not yet developed a startle reflex. Gibbs also goes on site to Shore Memorial and Atlanticare hospitals to capture the f ir s t mo ments of life.

Meet Sharon at Miracle Fitness

iracle Fitness is not your ordinary gym or fitness center. Although there is a lot of equipment to strengthen and tone your muscles and there are group fitness classes, Miracle Fitness specializes in fitness for senior citizens and those in recovery perhaps from a knee replacement or a stroke. It also has clients with special needs, both physical and mental. Many of the clients also have chronic health conditions such as Alzheimer's.

Regardless of what you have or don’t have, when you open the door you are met with the friendliest of smiles and a warm greeting from Sharon Sobansky.

Sobansky is the manager at Miracle Fitness and she takes the time to get to know all of her clients. “Many senior citizens live alone and when they come here it’s the only time they may get to interact with others,” says Sobansky.

“Wherever their challenges are,

we adapt to their ability level,” explains Sobansky. On Wednesdays and Fridays Sobansky teaches Senior Cardio Class. She has been teaching these classes for ten years now.

“Everyone knows each other and we begin to feel like a family. We even collect socks for the homeless every Christmas. As little as this gym is we collect 300 pairs of socks. We have a big heart. ”says Sobansky.

es, I’ve been to a nudist colony, not that anything’s wrong with that. Sunshine Park was located on the Great Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing and like many things from a time long passed, it is no more.

It was 1970 and ACCC was just ACC. I was a freshman and was asked to come out for the crew team.

It was only the second year for crew at ACC and the coach, Jim Wortman had never rowed nor coached crew before coming to the college. We also had no place to house a 58’ crew shell with access to rowable water.

It was the early stages of rowing in this area so resources were meager and the challenges daunting. But Coach Wortman was nothing if not persistent and resourceful. When he told us that he secured a location where we can store our shell and walk the boat right into the river, we were ecstatic. I am sure our reaction was priceless when he said we would be rowing out of a nudist colony in Mays Landing. Images danced through the minds of young testosterone ridden oarsmen and we eagerly anticipated the start of the crew season. Little did we realize that our on the water training for crew began at the end of February.

This was something that Coach Wortman failed to mention. We arrived at the park to find it a frigid and desolate site. Our preconceived notions were shattered. With no place to switch from our school clothes into our rowing gear we modestly ducked behind trees to change. The irony was not lost on us. There was no dock along the river’s edge so we had to take our socks and shoes off and walk the boat through the frost and brittle ice.

We grew less and less enamored with the idea of rowing out of a nudist colony. As the season progressed, we rowed through snow, sleet and freezing rain. We still stubbornly held onto the belief that we would be rewarded with frolicking nudists when the weather warmed. February gave way to March, then April and finally May. As our season was drawing to a close, gradually we started to see a few white tails coming out but much to our dismay, these residents were of the middle aged and senior citizen variety. Our rowing continued for a couple more weeks and we hardly gave the residents a second look. It really was no big deal and seemed very natural. We even stopped changing our clothes behind the trees. They were more curious about us rowing very early in this long wooden boat every morning. Funny thing about that stretch of the river, though. As more of the residents came out at the colony, the more passing boats on the river apparently suffered from engine malfunctions. A Bermuda Triangle type of phenomenon? I don‘t think so.

▶1 ▶ 1/2 pounds of frozen broccoli (or. fresh if you have ▶1/2 ▶ cup full fat coconut milk ▶1 ▶ TSP fine sea salt, and 1 TSP of garlic or more to taste Instructions 1. On the stove top, over boiling water, steam frozen broccoli until tender. Approximately 15 minutes (5 minutes if you are using fresh broccoli).

2. Drain the water and pour broccoli in your high speed blender.

3. Add coconut milk and salt and garlic.

4. Mix on high for 10-15 seconds.

5. Adjust the salt to taste.

6. Enjoy!!

Mr. White marketing director of the school had this to say “Students are learning to buy advertising using Shore Local Newspaper to complete their mock business marketing and advertising project. This type of learning is what separates the T. Byrd school from other schools. The mock business project enables students to develop business skills that apply to starting their own business as well as completing business projects for a potential employer.

These real world skills are essential in today’s high tech world.

The core of T. Byrd’s training is the Microsoft Office Professional Suite and QuickBooks. We have many students getting jobs, but just as many are starting small businesses such as a bookkeeping firm and health spa manager locally. One of recent class graduates has her own small bookkeeping firm with several clients that wanted to hire her. She opted to be in business for herself with many clients to help her achieve her needed income level.

We are proud of the student’s and the success that they have achieved over the last twenty plus years. We have used this format in our curriculum and school for the last ten years. Trina Byrd President and CEO stated.

LEASANTVILLE, NJ –T. Byrd Computer School, students are poised and trained to make a recovery in their recent unemployment. Many laid off workers need and want additional skills to start a new career in many cases outside of the casino industry. Obtaining certification in Microsoft Office Professional and Quick Books not only can land you a job in just about any industry, since every industry utilizes computer technology, but can also prepare you if you’re thinking of starting your own business.

Most of our currently enrolled students have worked in the same job for over twenty plus years achieving some pretty high salaries, but little skill sets for any other industry besides the casino. Now these same jobs have lower starting wages and require more technology skills than years ago, therefore the T. Byrd Center training program focuses on preparing their students for tasks that employers are looking for. Our main objective is to provide the specific skills you need, but also the mindset of confidence to be able to accomplish any business task the employer is looking for. Those tasks include: business letters, proposals, RFP, RFQ documents, financial income and expense spreadsheets, marketing and advertising for which students use the Shore Local newspaper, creating a customized database to track data, power point presentation and setting up a business in Quick Books, etc.

The Shore Local Newspaper is an integral part of the T. Byrd curriculum because it is used during Microsoft Excel, Publisher and Quick Books.

The Continental and Buddakan

hen The Pier opened in 2006, it was a much-ballyhooed attraction on the world famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. A revamping of the former Ocean One Mall, which had become a sad collection of trinket shops, it became a stylish and upscale shopping experience living up to its even older name from a bygone era when it was known as the Million Dollar Pier. Because millions were invested in its rebirth, with lavish shops like Gucci, Burberry, and Tiffany's catering to the high-end clientele they hoped to attract. Interior designers went wild imagining the store fronts and hallways, designing creative public areas that included a dancing water fountain at the pier's end and a wall of windows on the third level, where weary shoppers too precious for the

outside world could sit and watch the ocean on chairs in little faux beaches.

Climate controlled kitsch! And for a time, The Pier was a boom to Caesars, attracting shoppers and tourists who wandered around in awe, like the ancient Romans come to see Cleopatra's Barge and all the opulence that it represented.

As with all real estate ventures, location and timing are everything.

spin and suddenly very few people could afford luxury items such as Louis Vuitton suitcases and Burberry trench coats. New owners came in, new concepts, new changes, new directions, and new names, now it's called The Playground, and still… the promised ballyhoo hasn't quite lived up to the hype.

But tucked away up on that third floor are two restaurants that, from their opening day, seemed to defy the odds and have made their little respective outlets into delicious havens of popularity and profitability.

Philadelphia based restaurateur Stephen Starr opened the Continental and Buddakan among the many food outlets on third floor dining level and they immediately stood out from their competitors. Known for his high-concept dining experience, each restaurant was heavily themed and expertly designed, with the Continental serving global tapas and Buddakan's focus on modern Asian cuisine. First up is The Continental, it's retro-chic look is unmistakable as you walk up to it, the bright yellow fire pit and hanging lamps catch your eye right away, and then you notice the water beneath your feet, as you walk over the footbridge to the bar. White swivel chairs surround an all white and wellstocked bar, helmed by a very capable bartender. They have an extensive collection of rums, vodkas, gins, and tequilas, and an inventive cocktail list that plays on both the kitsch and the delicious. One favorite is the Astronaut and it lives up to its name

since one of the main ingredients is Tang, that 60's era 'space drink'. Many of the drinks are handcrafted, with fresh fruits and mixers that are being muddled and shaken and stirred all night long. Fun Fact: The Martinis at their AC location are much larger than you'll find in their Philadelphia location. Their food menu is also very creative, serving tapas, which are small and large plates of appetizers and savory dishes for sharing, although you don't have to share if you don't want to. I know I visit fairly regularly for their signature dish, the Cheesesteak Eg g Rolls , handmade and delicious, ser ved with hot cherry peppers and string fries and believe me, I share them with no one! The bar and fire pit area are great for people watching, as diners and tourists wander by to watch the sunset but The Continental also has an 'inside' area, part of which looks like a chic version of the Brady Bunch set and a separate space called the Sammy Davis, Jr. Room for good reason, it's all bubbles and very groovy. Enough seating for small family gatherings or large conventions, this is one restaurant where you'll remember the ambience as well as the delicious food. Jon Karp (formerly of Jonathan's in Chelsea Heights) is the general manager, he has staffed it with great young servers who add to the hip and trendy atmosphere.

Buddakan is directly next door and, again, you can't help but marvel at the design. As you approach, you feel as if you are wandering through a bamboo forest and stumble upon

Both Buddakan and the Continental offer a full lunch and dinner menu, with a Happy Hour at the bar only from Sunday to Friday, 3p-6p. They are located on the third floor dining level of the The Playground, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

And if you happen to see me on your next visit, I just might share my Cheesesteak Egg Rolls with you, as long as you ask nicely.

a hidden Buddhist temple. Directly ahead, at the end of a long glowing marble table, is a golden statue of Buddha himself, serenely presiding over your visit. The atmosphere here is quieter than Continental, and a bit darker, creating a more intimate dining experience. And for even more privacy, there are private rooms along the walls for special occasions. The staff here is also very knowledgeable and any questions you may have about the menu is expertly answered, with even more information than you may have anticipated. On my recent visit, I took advantage of the Lunch Box, where you choose three items from the menu and I made sure to order the Edamame Ravioli, the Tuna Spring Rolls, and the Brussels Sprouts, all prepared expertly.

Mortimer Spreng has been in the service industry in Atlantic City for decades. From opening Trump's Castle to bartending at Studio Six, from waiting tables at Trump Plaza to performing on the casino stages, he is well known to many of the residents of South Jersey. If he's not behind the bar somewhere in the city, you can be sure to find him sitting at one with a very dirty Martini in hand.
