Goodbye Revel, Hello Ocean Club Resort New Owner Plans to Open this Summer

he most expensive casino built in Atlantic City has a new owner, about a month after rumors surfaced that it had been sold. According to a report from Bloomberg, Denver-based Integrated Properties confirmed this week that it has reached a deal to buy Revel for $200 million.

Revel cost $2.4 billion to build, opening in 2012 and closing in 2014. Florida-based real estate developer Glenn Straub snatched it up in 2016 for a bargain price of $82 million.

Integrated properties is planning to reopen the casino this summer. It will be called Ocean Resort Casino. Straub, who complained of the New Jersey licensing process in his efforts to reopen Revel, planned to call it TEN. It will have 100 table games and more than 2,000 slots Integrated Properties’ bet comes at a time when Atlantic City is making a comeback. Through November, total industry gaming revenue was $2.45 billion, up 2.4 percent year-over-year. Atlantic City could see a big boost if it’s able to offer legal

My Fitness Journey

“I

didn't realize you are expecting," are the words that made me realize I needed to do something about my declining health and fitness.

I was 46 years old and had recently gained 40 pounds following a radical hysterectomy. To make matters worse, each of the added pounds seemed to go straight to my midsection. My belly was huge. Yet my legs remained relatively thin and weak, leaving me with a Mrs. Potato Head kind of physique.

I had felt more tired and as if the best years of my life had already passed. I knew I had to change my ways.

I decided to begin my healthy revolution with a visit to the family doctor. "It’s probably a result of too many carbohydrates in your diet," she said while examining my abdomen.

My blood pressure was borderline high and the doctor noted that my

weight was at an all time high. I went home and drowned my sorrows in some of my favorite comfort foods, pretzels and diet coke. "Were pretzels carbohydrates?" I wondered.

I began to research healthy living, forced myself to give up diet soda, drank ridiculous amounts of water and began reducing my carbs and sugar. I also joined a gym and did cardio machines three to four times a week. I was making some, albeit slow, progress.

In the meantime, one of my daughters had been training at the same gym where I was doing my cardio.

She loved it. I decided to watch her one day as I did my 30 minutes on the elliptical machine. The trainer was full of bulging muscles with tattoo designs on them. I was surprised to see her doing heavy weight lifting.

"You're on the boy's side of the gym,” I told her. “Girls do not want muscles like that." I am so ashamed to admit that I said that to her. She was 18 years old and I knew I really couldn't and shouldn't tell her how to exercise.

Plus she seemed so healthy, vibrant and happier than she had ever been.

I considered what she said and did some research on my own. I decided to give it a try. First with the personal training, and then I joined in the group classes. It was hard, especially in the

beginning. I pushed through it, with a lot of encouragement from both the trainer and my daughter. With the fitness training and diet modifications, I lost seven pounds a month and eventually I got back to my normal weight range. I added in yoga classes and jogging. A year later, I was so proud when I finished my first 5k race.

Nearly 4 years later, I still go to the fitness classes and I am also training to run my first Half Marathon in April, only a few days after my 50th birthday. My fitness level is nothing to boast of, but I am stronger than I ever knew I could be.

I hated changing my habits, but I forced myself to make small changes in my daily routine, that ultimately led me to a healthier lifestyle. I still have a long way to go, but I've learned that life's about the journey, not the finish line.

I continue to learn and adapt. I often slip up, eat the wrong things, or skip the gym. But then I just try to get back on track and keep taking little steps towards the healthy lifestyle I want.

This issue of Shore Local features a special section called “Healthy New Year,” and it is full of information and tips to help you live out your healthiest and happiest New Year.

Hometown Hero: Bill & Tammy Schmincke

ill and Tammy Schmincke spent the day driving around Atlantic City, handing out coats, blankets, hygiene and nutrition kits to anyone who was in need. They also gave them a list of resources where they could go for help.

They know that addictions often lead to homelessness. This wasn't a special day of volunteering for them. Rather, it is a lifestyle, a mission and a promise that they made to their son, Steven.

Steven Schmincke was only 27 years old, when he lost his life to an opioid overdose. In the midst of their pain and loss, Bill and Tammy made a promise to their son, that they would tell his story and use it to help others.

They have kept that promise and in the 21 months since then, they have made remarkable strides through their organization, Stop the Heroin.

Stop the Heroin is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to facilitate the transition from drug and alcohol rehabilitation to a sober living facility which supports recovering individuals as the they rebuild their lives. Stop the Heroin has funded and supported 156 graduates who otherwise would have had nowhere to go.

Additionally they have opened a sober living home, named in their son’s honor, Steven’s Place, which houses 12 men in Egg Harbor Township. Steven's Place offers

This is sorely needed as most insurance companies will only cover drug detoxification with only a very brief rehabilitation time. Even if the insurance company does cover more, it can be difficult to find a bed available and to navigate the complex steps needed to get there. Bill and Tammy assist with locating, funding and sometimes even transportation to help facilitate sober living facility. They also have fought hard against the stigma that individuals and families with addictions have faced in the past. With two billboards, t-shirts and sweatshirts they sell and wear almost daily, a huge social media presence, and information tables at community events, Stop the Heroin has raised awareness about addictions and the opioid crisis tremendously.

Stop the Heroin is creating supports for the many children the opioid crisis has impacted or left behind.They recently held holiday party for 11 local families that have lost one or both parents to addictions.

“I wake up everyday, so grateful for all the people and support that has been given to Stop the Heroin. We can't take our foot off the pedal now.

There is too much work to be done,” says Bill Schmincke. Stop the Heroin is planning two large scale events to be held in April. The first is the second annual Recovery Walk which invites the recovery community to come out and celebrate their time in recovery. It will be held on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and this year, adding a 5k and 10k race.

The second is a two day music festival to benefit Stop the Heroin, held at Proud Mary’s in Atlantic City. Many talented bands will be volunteering their time and skills to raise awareness and funding for Stop the Heroin.

“Everything we do is about our son,” said Bill. “ If Steven is watching I think he would be happy that we are helping people and he would say something like, ‘Yeah, that’s how my family rolls.’

The Opioid Crisis is a drug epidemic that is nationwide. Opioids include illegal drugs like heroin, but also legal drugs like morphine and fentanyl, and many commonly prescribed painkillers like codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Nearly 100 people die each day from addiction and overdose of these opioids, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Opioid addictions most often begin with prescription drug abuse. When they are no longer available, the user will often turn to a cheaper alternative, heroin. A bag of heroin costs less than $10, less than a pack of cigarettes. The heroin’s low cost and accessibility crown the drug as the center of the addiction epidemic.

Blizzard 2018

hope everyone fared well in the blizzard of 2018! Now, I'm a bit biased because I LOVE snow, but I thought it was a great storm. It came and went. In and out. The low tracked far enough off the coast where a northeast wind wasn't a big concern so we didn't have to deal with any major flooding, but we got dumped on with tons of snow. That's always the best case scenario for us. I totally understand that many of you may NOT like the snow for various reasons, and I get that. The good news is, there's a little bit

of something coming for everyone. While I think we could squeeze out another winter weather event within the next 6 days or so, the bigger story is going to be the coming January thaw. It will come in two different waves, the second will be the one that lasts longer. Temps could soar to 60 degrees in spots. Even I'm looking forward to that!

On a different note I want to talk about something that REALLY irks me. Made up weather terms. It seems as though every year I add a new term to my list of banned words. Things I will NEVER say on the air. First it was Polar Vortex, then it was whatever crazy name the weather channel came up with to identify winter storms, now? It's "Bomb Cyclone". What's next?

Murder rain? It's getting ridiculous. Sensationalism at its finest. So what exactly IS a "bomb cyclone"?

Well I can tell you it's something that has been happening since the beginning of time and will continue to happen until the end of time. Nothing new.

Areas of low pressure often undergo a process we call BOMBogenesis, which is a rapid intensification; a drop of 24 millibars or more in a 24 hour period. In layman's terms it just means a storm is getting really strong, really fast. You'll often hear me referring to a storm as "bombing out". That's all it means. It seems as someone sitting at

a desk somewhere decided "oh we need some flashy headlines, let's invent a new term!". That's all. As per snow from this recent blizzard? Totals varied, but the official total that will go down in the books is 14.2", putting our season total at over 24". The Plunge, which is free and open to the public, has become a popular tradition with both locals and visitors to Brigantine and takes place at noon. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes with prizes awarded to the best costumes.

Welcome to 2018 - A Year of New Beginnings

ach year on the first business day of our New Year, I introduce my broad operating theme for the year.

As we begin a brand new year (2018) together - Welcome to our "Year of New Beginnings" focus.

Without a doubt, we are presently in a year of "New Beginnings" and many people don't even know it, yet. There are many things happening "brand new" this year that we already know about: We have a new Governor (Phil Murphy); New Lt. Governor (Sheila Oliver); New General Assembly Speaker (Craig Coughlin); A hike in the minimum wage to $ 15 per-hour; Recreational Marijuana will likely be approved in New Jersey this year; Higher state taxes and user fees will most likely occur this year with Governor Christie gone; We'll elect a new Congressman from District 2 after 24 years with Frank LoBiondo

this year; We'll have a new State Senator from District 2; We'll most probably learn about the appointment of a new state senator from District 1 before the end of this year as Jeff Van Drew is currently the prohibitive favorite to become Congressman from District 2; New Atlantic County and Cape May County Sheriffs; Frank Gilliam, Jr. is the new Mayor of Atlantic City; Two new Atlantic City Casinos will open; Sports betting in New Jersey should be approved later this summer by the United States Supreme Court; Gretchen Carlson is the new Chair of The Miss America Board of Directors, along with three other former Miss America's who have joined the Board. In nearly 100 years, there had never been one former Miss America on the Board.

Now there are four; It's Year Two of President Trump and the new Tax Reform and Jobs Act goes into effect.

This list is not nearly complete and it represents only some of the "new beginnings" that we will see this year.

You can easily make the case that we will see more change take place this year at one time then we've seen in decades. Hence, "new beginnings" are all around us.

There's so much by way of "new beginnings" that will take place this year that as of today we have absolutely no idea what "they" are. This is both an exciting and daunting proposition. The unknown is always scary.

However, if your equipped with a basic set of

core operating philosophies and principles, then you'll be ready to handle any new challenges that may present this year.

Also, if you're not planning on changing jobs, or, changing personal relationships - consider rededicating your efforts to start a "new beginning" in all phases of your life - both personal and professional.

If you don't already do so, learn to appreciate what you already have. If you rate your life in debits and credits, you already have much more richness than you may have thought.

Also, consider treating people with respect and kindness. If you're presently dealing with any petty, stupid personal feuds, typically, you most likely don't even know what started it all in the first place.

Try to seek a new beginning in these instances. Life is already too short to clutter it further with meaningless negative energy and unnecessary drama. It serves no productive purpose and it can hold you back from achieving important life goals.

This doesn't mean that I am simply suggesting that you should forgive and forget everything.

You may be dealing with certain legitimate disagreements and grievances. These must be worked through. However, the goal should always be to eliminate any and all non-productive situations presently weighing you down in your life.

If someone or something is currently drag-

ging you down. It may be time to cut it loose once and for all. It's not your job to carry an anchor around with you.

If you've been spending an inordinate amount of time and effort on people that aren't worth it - consider making the break. Apply your precious time to those who are both worthy and deserving of your time and efforts.

Your time is a valuable commodity. Please treat it as more valuable than currency. You can always find a way to make more money. You can not manufacture more time. You only get so much and it can't be replenished. Once wasted, time is gone forever.

It's going to be an exciting and challenging time ahead. Welcome to our "Year of New Beginnings." I sincerely challenge you to become the best version of you that has ever existed. Let's start together, today.

Why You Need an Instant Pot Vegging at the Shore

One of the most popular foodie gifts of 2017 was the Instant Pot. I’ve been hearing about them for the past couple of years from people claiming that it’s a life changer. How could that be possible? I have so many kitchen gadgets taking up space on my counter that get used frequently like my food processor and stand mixer. I was wondering if my kitchen had room for one more appliance. I was lucky enough to receive an Instant Pot as

an early birthday gift and after just one use I’m hooked.

So what is an Instant Pot? It’s an electric pressure cooker and slow cooker combined. You can also sauté and make yogurt in it. I’ve had a slow cooker for about ten years that I probably use about twice a year. My family doesn’t eat meat so usually I just make soup and occasionally I’ve experimented with granola and lasagna in the slow cooker. When I’ve made soup in the slow cooker, I have sautéed the vegetables in a pan before adding them to the pot. With the ability to sauté in the Instant Pot, that step is eliminated.

A pressure cooker is something that I was completely unfamiliar with.

It cooks food in half the time it would normally take by sealing the pot and applying a high amount of pressure.

So what recipe did I start with? I did a quick search for Instant Pot vegetarian recipes and the first one that jumped out at me was mushroom spinach risotto. I’m a big fan of risotto, but not of adding broth to arborio rice and stirring it continuously for a half hour. With this recipe I was able

to sauté the mushrooms and shallots in oil using the sauté setting before adding the remaining ingredients like broth and rice. Then I sealed the Instant Pot and set it to cook for six minutes. Yes, just six minutes. It probably took the Instant Pot about three minutes to heat up so the whole process took about twenty minutes, including the sautéing and pressure release. After the rice was done cooking and the pressure was released, I added the spinach and parmesan cheese. I was very impressed with how little effort it took to produce something so tasty.

I was a little intimidated to get started with the Instant Pot because the safety instructions are extensive.

I watched a few Youtube videos so I was familiar with how to release the pressure safely and how to use the different functions. I also joined a few Instant Pot recipe-sharing groups on Facebook. I found a very helpful one for vegetarian recipes. I’m a big Pinterest fan (for recipes, not craft projects) so I immediately set up a Pinterest board just for Instant Pot recipes. It’s already filling up!

I’m most looking forward to cooking beans in the Instant Pot. While I love the convenience of canned beans, I don’t like the high-sodium liquid it comes in. Lentils and chickpeas are first on my list. To say that I’m excited about having an Instant Pot is an understatement. In the new year I plan to fill my blog with plenty of new vegetarian Instant Pot recipes so make sure you follow along. “Cape May Arnie”

very golfer knows The King, Arnold Palmer. And nearly every golfer knows that Arnold Palmer was from Latrobe Pennsylvania, out by Pittsburgh. Few people know about his time right here in Cape May, New Jersey, and at Wildwood Country Club.

For most of three years, from 1951 to 1953, in between his college playing days at Wake Forrest University and his prolific professional playing career which began in 1954, Arnold Palmer worked in the United States Coast Guard at Cape May. It was here, while serving his nation where he grew to become the great golfer by playing the beautiful treelined bayside links at Wildwood C.C. near Cape May Court House.

Founded in 1916, and less than twenty minutes from the Cape May Coast Guard base where he was stationed, historic Wildwood C.C. was a pivotal training ground for Palmer in his formative early 20’s years before he turned pro and became America’s most famous golfing hero.

Longtime Wildwood C.C. member, Jim Byrne, 84, knew, and got to play with Palmer in those Wildwood and Cape May days when he was a teenager. “I was a senior in high school in 1951,” remembered Byrne. “We got out of school about the same time the Coast Guard guys did and we would go to Wildwood to play and there was

Arnie. He would always be like ‘hey, do you want to play a few holes’, and then he and my brother and I would go play. “He was so down to Earth. He was just Arnie from the Coast Guard to us. He would hit the ball way right, and long, and then hit the most amazing hook shots you’d ever see right back and onto the green. He was incredible. He was always so much fun.”

Long time Wildwood P.G.A. professional, and now General Manager, Fred Riedel remembered how just months before his death, Palmer, who so much loved his playing days at the Jersey Shore course, signed several pin flags for him and wrote him a letter addressed to the club and its members to help commemorate Wildwood’s 100th birthday last year.

“It probably just took five or ten minutes for him, but for us and our members it was huge,” said Riedel.

“Arnie would come back sometimes when he was in the area, and he kept in contact with several of our members he knew over the years, and hosted them at Bay Hill, too, when they were down there.

“It goes without saying that it’s a huge honor to be on, and a part of, a property like Wildwood Country Club where Arnold Palmer played. He was The King.”

This was when it was discovered that Sadie wasn't a feral cat at all. She was a loving, affectionate house cat that somehow ended up outside. Further examination by our veterinarian also showed that her back leg had been broken at one time and was never taken for vet care.

At this point, her leg has healed on its own but isn't perfect. She gets around fine but will always have a limp.

Sadie is extremely affectionate and seems as though she would be a good fit for most households.

Sadie would likely get along with other cats but dogs are unknown.

W

e are a couple of weeks into the new year and I’m holding strong. I know it’s early, but don’t try to discourage me.

This issue of Shore Local is dedicating a huge section to health and I’ve got to be honest, I got a head start. Right after Thanksgiving my wife and I started a new eating plan. I don’t really want to call it a diet because I’m hoping new habits will be formed and it will be a lifelong adjustment in what I eat.

Regardless, we are both staying strong, through the holidays and now into the new year.

And it’s working. But here is the reality. To make it work, it takes work and focus. It’s not easy every day and sometimes I get the urge to back off. But I look to the goal. I remind myself of where I’ve come and where I’m headed.

I’m not a professional at this by any means. But for what it’s worth, here is what I’ve discovered.

To accomplish this goal or any goal for the matter it requires the following RESOLVE - Others may try to convince you of something they want. They can suggest you take a certain course of action or in my case, suggest that you drop some pounds, get in shape, etc. But

to have a lasting effect, the only way it will happen is if I, if you resolve to make it happen. You can’t force something on someone (at least not in a way that will have a last effect).

PLAN - You or I can’t just decide we want to do something. We have to be specific in how we are going to accomplish it. An idea or goal without a plan to accomplish that goal never gets out of the “dream stage”. So, whether it’s a plan to live healthier, lose weight, get into shape or another goal of any kind, there has to be a plan as to how you will reach the goal.

FOCUS - Finally (at least for me), it’s important to remind myself of the end. When you hit the wall (which we all do), you have to remember where you are headed. Focus on the end game and what you want to accomplish. Not only that, but the benefits you’ll see by staying on track and not veering off course.

For me, these three things have helped over the last five weeks to stay on course. Reaching a worthwhile goal is never going to be easy. If you didn’t have to exert effort and stretch yourself, it wouldn’t be worth pursuing. So, remember it won’t happen overnight. It takes time. Resolve, plan, and focus. Then go for it!

Healthy Winter Medicine Cabinet Needs

This is because when we have a cold or flu our immune system sends out the army to battle the illness which sometimes causes histamines to over react and cause multiple unpleasant symptoms such as itchy tearing eyes, sinus pressure/pain, stuffiness or running nose, sore throat, cough and congestion. Following are a few suggestions to get you back to your usual self.

Breathing Easier A neti pot is a container designed to rinse debris or mucus from your nasal cavity. You can use a neti pot to treat symptoms of nasal allergies, sinus problems or colds. A warm salt and water solution is used to flush out the nasal passages. If you choose to make your own saltwater solution, it's important to use bottled water that has been distilled or sterilized. To also breathe easier, you can diffuse eucalyptus, wintergreen , peppermint or clove essential oils.

Stay Hydrated Don't dehydrate! If you do get sick it’s important to drink even more fluids – especially when you have vomiting or diarrhea.

Cut back on the food, and drink more fluids.

One way to re-hydrate and re-mineralize is with alkaline/ ionized and infused water.

You can add lemon, lime, maple syrup, honey or sea salt to your water. Adding stock, bone broth, green drinks and tea to your fluid lineup will also add nutrients. Minerals and micro mineral supplements are also good to add to water. Electrolytes that our body gets from minerals are lost when sweating from a fever or because of gastrointestinal issues and should be replaced.

Tea is also a great partner for staying hydrated and easing some of your illness symptoms. Drink ginger or rooibos tea to calm the digestive tract and ease stomach cramps. Chamomile has soothing properties, and can help you rest easier. Fennel tea helps with indigestion, gas, bloating and cramping.

Other great supplements to consider: Stinging nettle, quercetin for nose, eyes, throat; Feverfew, arnica, magnesium for pain; Osha or elderberry syrup for cough; Homeopathic remedies targeted to individual symptoms.

Heart Healthy Chicken Noodle Soup

By Recipe from Chef Michael D’Angelo 2 Chicks and and Chef Radio Show This is a great winter time light warming healthy soup. ▶6 ▶ cups of water ▶6 ▶ celery ribs diced ▶1 ▶ medium onion diced ▶4 ▶ medium carrots peeled and sliced 1 bay leaf ▶2 ▶ chicken breast or 4 chicken legs and thighs combo skinless Dash of ground white pepper ▶Dash ▶ of Salt (optional) 1/2 lbs of dry egg noodles Bunch of flat leaf parsley.

In one pot, boil 2 quarts of water for the egg noodles.

In another pot, put all items together and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for an hour. Turn off stove and remove chicken from the pot.

Let chicken cool, remove chicken meat from the bone and dice the meat. Return the diced chicken meat to the pot.

Cook egg noodles and drain and put in the pot with the chicken.

Add a quarter cup of flat leaf parsley to pot. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes and serve. Remove the bay leaf prior to serving.

Variations: Replace noodles with rice. You can also add peas, string beans, can corn.

My Winter Favorites

A

s the snow falls and the temperature drops, don't be tempted to warm your belly with rich macaroni and cheese and creamy soup. Instead, get that toasty feeling from superfoods: healthy eats that are loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and immune-boosting powers that your body needs to power itself through cold weather. Read on to find what I feel are a few of the best hot foods to eat on chilly days and a few healthy tidbits to prepare them for ultimate nutrition.

I love oatmeal when the cold is on!

When it gets cooler, it's the perfect time to break out the oatmeal. Oats are a whole grain, so you'll get a dose of fiber and plant-based protein to stop hunger with just one bowl. Plus, oatmeal contains

a powerful starch called beta-glucan.

Just 3 grams a day of the beta-glucan in oats may help reduce bad cholesterol levels by 5-10%! You can get extra nutrition if you choose the right toppings too. To get some healthy fat mixed in, I add almond butter and chia seeds.

Curling up with a warm hot chocolate can do the trick - just nix the sugary powdered mix with marshmallow bits. When I make it, I like to melt two squares of dark chocolate and stir it into regular or almond milk. Adding a little dark chocolate to your diet is a great health booster too.

The sweet contains flavonoids, a type of antioxidant thought to reduce the damage caused by free radicals potential instigators of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

There's nothing like a great bean soup with cumin and chili pepper to heat you up when things get cold. The nutrition star of this dish, though, is the beans.

Black beans are a good source of iron and copper. So sipping on this soup will help your muscles use more oxygen and boost your immune system. A cup of black beans provides 15 grams each of protein and fiber and unlike animal protein sources, black beans contain almost no saturated fat.

How about a bowl of Brussels

sprouts? Eating these mini cabbages may just help you fight a cold this season. In addition to being packed with fiber and cancer-fighting phytonutrients, Brussels sprouts run high in vitamin C. It won't prevent the sniffles completely, but vitamin C has been shown to reduce the symptoms of a cold. Though the bitter taste of Brussels sprouts tends to scare some people away, heating them up can make a huge difference in flavor. I roast them with olive oil and salt and pepper and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Like pumpkin, sweet potatoes are particularly high in vitamin A. One baked, medium sized spud contains nearly 4 grams of fiber—mostly found in the skin—to fill your tummy. Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and a bit of iron. If you bake the sweet potato by itself, it's generally a low-calorie food. Just try to avoid slathering fatty butter or margarine on top. A better bet: rosemary.

My favorite is chili! The peppers in your stew contain a compound called capsaicin, which gives them their spicy kick. It's also thought to boost metab-

olism and fight the buildup of fat. No matter the variety, the beans in chili also pack protein to help you build muscle. That's not all. Tomato paste is rich in lycopene and the onions provide unique antioxidants.

I’ve seen that people who ate a diet of walnuts, walnut oil, and flax oil had reduced resting blood pressure and blood flow resistance in their arteries than those who ate a diet lower in ALA.

Dietitian Dish: Considering a Ketogenic Diet?

What You Need to Know

he arrival of the New Year brings a fresh opportunity to develop healthier habits. If you’ve struggled with weight loss, as many do, you may have considered one of the latest trendy diets to get to a healthier weight, like Whole 30, the Paleo diet, and the fad of the moment, the ketogenic or “keto” diet.

If you’re jumping on the keto bandwagon, however, it’s important to take a deeper look at this diet before you decide if it is something you should consider.

Where the Keto Diet Ranks Every year, US News and World Report issues a ranking of the year’s best diets.

The rankings are determined by an expert panel that evaluates each diet on nine areas including ease of compliance, the likelihood of losing significant weight in the short term and the long-term, and effectiveness against cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The ketogenic diet ranked last on the list (out of 40 diets). You may be wondering why, especially if you have seen incredible weight

loss results from the diet in friends or even yourself.

How the Keto Diet Works The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that originated as a therapy for epileptic seizures. The ketogenic diet calls for almost 70 percent of caloric intake from fat and only 15 to 20 grams net carbohydrates per day. The 2015 – 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that 45 to 65 percent of our calories come from carbohydrates. Normally, carbohydrates are converted to glucose in our bodies and then used for cellular function, and in particular, brain function. When there are not enough carbohydrates in a person’s diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies then serve as fuel for the brain. Individuals are encouraged to monitor if they are in a state of ketosis by testing their urine, because excess ketones end up in the urine to be excreted. Intermittent fasting is recommended to help maintain or achieve the state of ketosis.

Keto Diet Concerns The obvious appeal of the ketogenic diet is the idea of burning fat and losing weight. However, with such a high fat intake, there are some

serious health concerns.

When you’re eating a tub of sour cream with some bacon on the side and cup of coffee with some butter mixed in for breakfast, which the diet encourages, you’re getting a serious helping of saturated fat. Saturated fat raises the level of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), which can damage your arteries and lead to a buildup of cholesterol on artery walls.

Additionally, with a limited intake of healthy carbohydrates to break down into glucose for the brain to use, you could experience headaches. Constipation can also be a side effect due to a lack of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Your breath will also smell fruity due to the ketones. Most importantly, the diet is just not a sustainable, healthy eating plan.

Diets that require you to completely eliminate a food group (fruits and whole grains as in the ketogenic diet) should always raise a red flag. You are going to eliminate key nutrients that your body needs from your diet. A healthy eating pattern never eliminates foods, but instead focuses more on balance and por-

tions. The diets that US News and World Report ranked highest include the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Both diets have a similar premise: eat more vegetables and fruit, choose lean meats, and incorporate whole grains while limiting unhealthy fats.

he start of a New Year is the perfect time to turn a new page, which is probably why so many people create New Year's Resolutions. A new year often feels like a fresh start, a great opportunity to eliminate bad habits and establish new routines that will help you grow psychologically, emotionally, socially, physically or intellectually. Of course, resolutions are much easier to make than to keep and by the end of January many of us have abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old patterns. Here are the top five ways to keep your New Year’s Resolution from the Katz JCC. #1 Choose a Specific, Realistic Goal: People who set a realist goal are more likely to achieve it than those that don’t. Focus on one objective that is based on your current level of fitness or starting point. Setting your sights on something attainable will set you up for success. #2 Make it an Appointment: Planning is an essential part of achieving any goal. Spend time considering what you need to do to accomplish your goal and allow those components to be important in your day. #3 Start Small: Taking on too much is a common reason why so many New Year's Resolutions fail. Focus on

taking tiny steps that will ultimately help you reach your larger goal. #4 Avoid Repeating Past Failures:If you didn’t reach your goal last year then making the same resolution this year and following the same steps to achieve it probably won’t work.

Consider some of the reasons you didn’t stick with it in 2017 and what you can do differently this year. #5 Change is a Process so Don’t Let Small Stumbles Bring You Down: Those unhealthy habits that you are trying to change probably took years to develop so how can you expect to change them in just a matter or days, weeks or months? The path toward your goal is not a straight one and there are always going to be challenges. Take time to reward yourself for sticking to the plan and view relapses as learning opportunities.

Specialty Bakery Offers Healthy Options

ocals have favorite neighborhood bakeries where things haven’t changed in 25, 50, or 100 years, but Jenna Kisby owner of Kizbees Kitchen a new hip bakery that combines favorite flavors to create sublime desserts that are completely gluten-free with custom vegan options has changed the way people view gluten-free and vegan sweets. Who even heard of gluten (or the lack thereof) a decade ago? The estimated 1.3 percent of the population who had celiac disease, which is the inability to digest gluten, did, but public awareness at that time was minimal. Today nearly 30 million people have given up gluten because they have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, but no one wants to give up bread, cake, pizza and all the Awesome foods of the past. And, hey, there’s no need to give up anything... except the gluten.

The Unfit Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit: FOUR TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

t’s that time of year. Everyone’s whipping out their running shoes, pink dumbbells, and purchasing their gym memberships. January sparks a sudden urge to exercise, and I know that feeling all too well. As someone who has struggled with their weight, I’ve garnered some special tips to get your body back into shape. My jean size has fluctuated up and down, but this year, I’m sticking to a healthy, clean-eating lifestyle.

If you want that perfect bicep, or at least to feel good about yourself, here’s my tips for starting the New Year off right: 1. Lower Expectations: What keeps you going? For so many of us, it’s the beach body fantasy. We drool over our future flat bellies, flawlessly-curved waists, and envious thigh gap. The “beach body effect” keeps us moving, but it’s not reality. At my lowest weight, I still had belly pudge and wore a size 10 jeans. That’s okay. If we continue striving toward the perfect body, burnout is inevitable. Remember that the goal is to feel comfortable in our own bodies, not to get recruited by a modeling agency.

2. Have fun Studies prove that suffering through brutal workouts isn’t sustainable. My downfall has always been exercise boredom. I’ve never found a workout I could enjoy for long periods of time, and when I stopped exercising, I gained weight. This year, I promise myself fun workouts with tons of variety. Go for a run through the woods, ride bikes with friends, drown in sweat at hot yoga, or have a football catch with your dad. If you’re crying every

time you climb on the elliptical, change it up. If you dread weight lifting (even though it’s super healthy), try a Zumba class. The more you shake it up, the more weight you will lose.

3. Balance, Not Restriction You’ve heard the old “cutting carbs” trick, right? Well, I’m living proof that that diet doesn’t work. When I was 16, I cut bread and pasta completely out of my life, and I lost weight. Sad News----I gained most of it back. Why? Cutting a complete food group out of your diet cannot be sustained for a lifetime. I found that I was sad during that time, too. I never ate birthday cake (even my own), didn’t take communion at church, and missed out on ice cream dates with my friends. Food shapes our culture and our lives, so why punish yourself? My nutritionist Nicole preaches that food should make you happy, and when we appropriately balance healthy food with treats, we can lose weight and still feel whole.

4. Practice Self Care and Self Love Self-care and self-love lay the foundation for success.

Just because you’re out of shape doesn’t make you any less worthy of love and care. As you start your fitness journey, be kind to your body. Let your-

self have a rest day, don’t push yourself too hard (but still maintain consistency), and compliment your successes. Before I go for a run, I pick a self-love mantra to keep me moving. “You’re worth it.” “You deserve to be comfortable in your own body,” and “Your potential is endless” are some of my favorites. Give yourself a round of applause after every workout (it may seem silly, but you’ll feel invincible).

Treat yourself to a yummy smoothie or snack after a tiring day. Once we learn to take care of ourselves, our bodies will show it from the inside out.

Take “New Year, New You” to the next level. I hope that as you flock to the gym and break in your new workout clothes, you learn to love yourself and healthy lifestyle choices. I hope that for you, this isn’t just a January thing. I hope it becomes a part of you that lasts a lifetime.

The Whole Package

ince I was a teenager, my New Year's Resolutions had been to lose weight.

Growing up overweight, I thought that if I just made the resolution every year that eventually I would change my reality.

Eventually, all would be right in my world because I’d be thin. In my mind, true happiness resided in a world outside of my own where I didn’t live in sweatpants and baggy shirts to cover my body and where I wasn’t limited to shopping in the plus sized section. The skinnier girls seemed happier, anyway, so it must be true! So year after year, January after January, I’d make it my resolution. This year would be my year!

August 2010. I was twenty-two.

It wasn’t a January 1st or a resolution. It was a mere decision. One that would change the trajectory of my life forever. My two month old daughter stared back at me as the switch flipped in my mind it was “game on”. I was going to get healthy for my baby and I wasn’t looking back.

Fast forward two years and I was sitting at a size two. I had lost over one hundred pounds and ten pant sizes. I achieved every weight loss goal that I had set including but not limited to crossing my legs, wearing a bikini, wrapping a regular bath towel around my body, and running a 5K. I nailed everything I had set my mind to.

Except for that goal of being healthy. I wasn’t healthy at all. I didn’t lose weight. I simply moved it from my body to my mind. When I should have been getting ready to celebrate Christmas with my family, I found myself crying on my mother’s couch over a magazine that showed holidays treats. The simple thought of food in abundance overwhelmed me with anxiety to the point of tears. I broke down and told my mom how I had

been crying over every tenth of a pound, tip toeing in the waters of eating disorders, and obsessing over how much food was going in versus how many calories were going out.

Somewhere along the journey, I had begun to build my worth on becoming this shell of a person staring back at me in the mirror and I didn’t recognize her. Not only did I not recognize her but she scared me. I knew it was time to seek some help. Everything that I thought I wanted for my future began to change. I wanted to be healthy for my baby and this wasn’t it. This couldn’t be it.

So mental weight loss began and life began to make more sense. As the years passed, I shed the mental weight, I gained some physical weight back but maintain a healthy and happy size 10. Most of all, I learned that my worth isn’t measured in a three digit number on a scale. My place in this world isn’t ranked by my jean size. What I have to offer isn’t measured in my non scale victories. Who I am is not defined by my flesh at all. My body is a home for the life that lives within me. I’m learning to love the woman staring back at me because when I look into her eyes, I see the realest version of myself. I see nurturing, loving eyes looking back at me. I see someone who is healthy on the inside first and however that looks on the outside becomes okay.

We live in a world that tells us every day that we aren’t beautiful enough. We’re bombarded with ideas of what beauty “should” look like and what our next diet should be.

‘Tis the season for new journeys, new goals, and chasing dreams but before you set out on a weight loss journey, allow me be the one to encourage you not to leave your mind behind. Take all of you along for the ride and make sure that your mind and spirit are nourished in the process. A thin body is worth nothing if you can’t enjoy your life. Your life is so much more than just your body.

So to my beautiful friends setting out on a weight loss journey this January, allow me to remind you of a few simple truths for the ride. ●● You’re already ENOUGH. ●● You’ve always been enough, you’ll always be enough. ●● Everything you need lies within you. ●● You don’t need to be “fixed”, you’re not broken. ●● Your journey is uniquely your own. Stay true to you. ●● Do whatever makes you feel alive. ●● This is your one life. Live it abundantly. ●● Your worth is not dependent on anything external. ●● Don’t let anything steal your joy. ●● Always remember to protect your peace through the process.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, abundant year ahead.

Moms Night Out

Moms, you survived a very long holiday break and gleefully watched your kids go back to school only to find them off for consecutive snow days right before yet another long holiday weekend. Right about now you are probably in need of a moms night out. Get your mama friends together and plan a fun night. We all need it once in awhile! Here are some fun ideas to give you some inspiration.

Plan an art night. We all accompany our kids to art classes and while they are fun, they are even more fun when you add wine. Contact your local art studio and see what they offer. Glazed Over in Ocean City is my favorite. You can paint pottery, pictures or create mosaics.

Plan a wine tasting. Last year

when my twins were in kindergarten, I organized a wine tasting at Passion Vines for kindergarten moms. I figured maybe a few people would come and was overwhelmed by the attendance at almost 30 moms! I worked with the staff at Passion Vines to select 5 wines for our tasting and they also provided chocolate, crackers and cheese. We had so much fun!

Take a self-defense class. A few

years ago my moms of twins club took a self-defense class at Devine’s Martial Arts in Mays Landing. Besides being really fun, it was so informative.

We learned such valuable information about how to protect ourselves and our families in a dangerous situation.

Visit a winery or distillery. Our area is home to great wineries from Cape May to Hammonton. Many of them have events or will set up pri-

vate tastings for groups. Two of my favorite wineries are White Horse Winery in Hammonton and Hawk Haven Winery in Cape May. As the weather gets warmer, check their events. White Horse Winery has food trucks and live music in the warmer months. Many new distilleries have opened in recent years including Lazy Eye Distillery and Little Water Distillery.

Try a new fitness class. My moms of twins club is planning a pole dancing class for later this month at Fitness Mogul in Hammonton (who says moms of twins don’t know how to have fun). If pole dancing isn’t your thing, how about aerial yoga in which you use a silk hammock to hang suspended during your poses. Take a cooking class. Moms get stuck in cooking ruts and love to learn new recipes and skills. Last year I taught a pizza making class for my moms of twins club. I taught everyone how to make dough from scratch and three different kinds of pizzas.

You can contact Happy Heart Corner to find out more about cooking classes for adults and you could even make it into a fundraiser with part of the proceeds going to your charity of choice.

Other ideas for a moms night out

are dinner at a restaurant (moms love eating out without the interruption of kids), bowling, movies and karaoke.

No matter what you plan, your mom friends will love an excuse to get out of the house for some adult time. Set up an event on Facebook so everyone knows the details and can rsvp. We all need a fun night out once in awhile!

Senior Moments

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

ongratulations. You’ve made it through the holidays hopefully, none the worse for wear. If you have enjoyed the company of friends and relatives, you probably have taken many photos. You took these photos because these moments were important to you and you wanted to share them via Facebook, Instagram or whatever your sharing preference may be. But I want to ask you, implore you, even beg you to not stop there. I have been a serious photographer for over 40 years and I have seen storage devices go from 5 ¼ floppy drives, to 3 ½ floppy drives, CD’s, DVD’s, flash drives and the Cloud. Frankly, I do not know where it will go from here. But I do know that for many years, I have enjoyed paging through photo albums that my parents painstakingly assembled years ago. Some of these photos such as portraits of my grandparents go back almost 100 years.

or smart phone be viewed 100 years from now?

I accept the fact that there may be many of you where this isn’t important and that is all well and good but if it is important to me, I have to think that there are other like-minded individuals out there.

To those people, I have some recommendations. If you haven’t already done so, print out some of your favorite photos. You can snail mail them to your friends or relatives. A small print in a frame will be appreciated and kept as a memento. There are now many options offered if you want to display photos in your home. You can have them mounted on canvas, glass, wood, metal and a variety of papers as well as mugs, pillows, canvas bags, blankets and even shower curtains just to name a few. One of my favorites though, are books. Books have stood the test of time and contrary to popular belief, will continue to be published well into the future. Self publishing your photo books online offers a variety of choices including softback, hardback with a wide selection of sizes and formats. There is a bit of a learning curve primarily because of all the features offered but it is mainly a drag and drop proposition.

I have done three books; two small projects and one large coffee table book of my favorite photos.

There is always a book in the process and more on the horizon. If you cherish the memories that were important enough for you to photograph, take some time to insure they will be around for many years to come.

A Time of Change

Winter Survival

s we have seen with the recent snow and arctic temperatures, adjusting to the elements can prove to be quite difficult. Survival during the harsh, cold winter months can prove to be challenging for everyone, but our local wildlife such as squirrel, fox and deer are well-versed when it comes to adapting to their environment.

Most birds migrate to warmer climates to escape the cold weather.

Some, like the Black-capped Chickadee, do not make the trek south. When there is a scarcity in food, these birds can regulate their body temperature using a process called “regulated hypothermia.”

Regulated hypothermia slows down their metabolic rate, allowing them to conserve their energy use by nearly a quarter. These resourceful birds can also prepare by storing bird seed into tree openings and small cracks of houses.

Over the last few months, our area has seen an invasion of snowy owls.

Measuring only two feet in height, the snowy owl can survive in the frozen tundra’s of Canada and Alaska. They typically perch on small posts such as fences and street signs and feed off of small rodents, mammals and birds.

Most people believe that the squirrel goes into hibernation during the cold season. Their preparation for winter begins six months in advance, during the height of summer. Grey squirrels rely on fat reserves and food they have stored.

They ensure their survival by storing

enough seeds and nuts as they need and venture from their nest, or drey, when necessary.

Over the past several years, our area has become home to the red fox.

They are building dens and court with other native fox during the cold winter months. If you are within a hundred yards of water, you might be lucky enough to find one of their dens.

To protect themselves from the elements, the red fox will curl its tail over their feet and nose. Their fur also acts as an insulator, keeping them warm and protected from the harsh elements.

The whitetail deer can easily adapt to the environment, including below freezing temperatures. Just like fox, deer also have a thick coat of hair that traps heat. Their movement is limited to what is only necessary to conserve energy, as the harsh winter means a scarcity in resources. Their metabolic rate decreases so they can store much-needed food and energy sources for longer periods.

Diamondback terrapins spend their winters in hibernation by burying themselves in the mud of the back bays and marshes.

Raccoons can easily adapt to any environment and eat off of just about anything, even if that means rummaging through your trash. They begin storing fat in the spring and summer months and can survive by foraging for food found in abundance such as. Most of us have observed their small hands pry up trash can lids. Raccoons hole up in dens during the bitter cold of winter and can sleep up to a month.

The quiet opossum is the most vulnerable of all the animals.

Opossum will move their nest every few days to offset predators. And just like many animals they, too, find refuge in the cozy confines of nature. These small creatures can be found burrowing inside of hollow-trees, small holes and building crevices. They also line their nest with leaves and dry grass for added protection.

As we take care of this earth, we want to help all of our animal friends.

Try to restrain from feeding deer… it is okay to hand salt licks and put out broken pumpkins when the ground is frozen. Please do not place scraps of food on your porch or lawns. The fox have become too confident (I know this from personal experience). As nature intends, our local wildlife does well.

There are rescue organizations that will provide care to injured mammals.

here have been many regional histories written over the years and many good ones at that. One of the most enduring, though, is James F. McCloy and Ray Miller Jr.’s The J e r s ey D ev i l .

Written in 1976, the book has gone through multiple editions (as of late, eighteen) and has been placed high on the shelf with other c l a s s i c s , l i ke John McPhee’s Pine Barrens , even though it may not be as well known. The book is con sidered to be the definitive source and go-to manual for Jersey Devil lore. It is a major contribution to New Jersey folklore, as well as letters, and is worth unpacking for those who have yet to experience it.

First and foremost, The Jersey Devil works as a history book. The six chapters that make up the book are rife with not only Pine Barrens’ lore, but social history of the Pine Barrens, as well. It also offers a naturalist perspective of the land, as well as a critical look at the folklore that has surrounded the legend of the famous monster. It’s very well written, too. Right from the start, the reader is greeted with prose that are both descriptive and beautiful without being too purple: Slow-moving streams, stained orange from iron ore and cedar, slipthrough the stillness of the forest. Gnarled vines thickly blanket the occasional ruin long since abandoned to nature by man. In some areas not even ruins survive, nor any trace of former habitation. (Page 15) It gives the reader the proper sense of isolation the Pine Barrens offer – a foreboding

place, yet also a place of solace, wonder, and escape. This is the place the Jersey Devil has been expected to haunt for close to three-hundred years.

The story of the beast has been told ad nauseum so I won’t repeat it here.

In fact, McCloy and Miller do their duty and give possibly the most comprehensive telling of the tale any reader is apt to find.

They also include all the revisions and alternative versions of the story up to the point of the book’s publication. The book really begins to pick up the pace when the authors divulge into the sightings of the creature.

This is important because, as they say in the text, “sightings of the creature are often linked to the eminent and the topical.

H e not only appears among local residents, but is associated with the world-famous as well” (Page 30). Whether it be an encounter with the American navel hero, Stephen Decatur, or Joseph Bonaparte (Napoleon’s brother), the Jersey Devil has made itself known to others aside from the reluctant inhabitants of the Pine Barrens.

Other sections of the book include “Theories, Rewards, and Hoaxes” and the “Phenomenal Week: January, 1909.” What makes this particular week so phenomenal is that it includes the most prolific amount of Jersey Devil sightings ever recorded in history. The hysteria was so acute that it verged on the side of pandemonium.

Whatever your interest on the subject (and I’ve been hardpressed to find anyone from New Jersey not interested in some degree in the Jersey Devil) this book is a one-stop shop. I read it recently, and it still holds up well.

Art Dorrington's Legacy Lives On

My goal is to bring you perspectives and information that you will not readily read or experience in mass media.

Art Dorrington...A Legacy On Ice!

Atlantic City’s Art Dorrington was a living legend that passed away on December 29th , 2017.

If you research Mr. Dorrington , you will find that Art Dorrington was the first African American to sign a contract with The NHL. The impact of Mr. Dorrington’s life can not

be summed up in research, or columns. I have however in an effort to share a part of Mr. Dorrington’s story, reached out to one of the young men that learned to skate through The Art Dorrington Foundation.

Mr. Tyrone Logan , Jr. is a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in American studies and a minor in African studies. Mr. Logan and his brother both knew Mr. Dorrington as “Coach” Dorrington.

Q: How did you and your brother get into Ice Hockey?

A: Our friends were playing ice hockey and we decided we wanted to play also. We had always seen the Mighty Ducks movie so this (The Ar t Dorrington Foundation) was our chance to try this amazing fast paced sport.

Q. I loved baseball as a child but never had a chance to play catch with Jackie Robinson.

How does it feel to have skated with the first Black Man to play professional hockey?

A. It was an amazing honor, It was even better when we

went and won a championship in a tournament in Detroit. It was nice to train hard and play hard and win a tournament with the ADIHF (Art Dorrington Ice Hockey Foundation) logo on our chest.

Q. Did Coach Dorrington teach you about life beyond hockey?

A. Mr. Dorrington taught us how to win not only on the ice but off the ice as well. We related scoring goals to achieving goals in the classroom and in life. We learned to be goal oriented and to push hard towards our goals and to never give up.

Q. How will you remember Coach Dorrington?

A. I will remember Mr. Dorrington as a 3rd grandfather.

He was always there for me and so my brothers and I tried to be there for him as often as possible. We were close to Mr. Dorrington. We would shovel our parents walkway and cars out of the snow and then head around the corner to do the same for Mr. Dorrington.

Art Dorrington, a professional ice hockey centre became the first African American hockey player to sign an NHL contract when he joined the New York Rangers organization in 1950. we were looking for summer jobs. I even ended up working at the Flyers Skate Zone because I was always there with the Dorrington Foundation. Mr. Dorrington will be missed but the ideals he instilled in us will always be with us along with his memory.

n this issue, we spotlight Don Kreutzer of Cheers the band. Remember the sitcom "Cheers" ? One of the best taglines ever: WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME... In speaking with Don, one of his early agents in the business came up with that name when the show was so popular. The thought was knowing the band on a more personal level. As the band grew in popularity, the name just kind of stuck. Today, Cheers the band is going strong with 9 members headed up by entertainer and musician Don Kreutzer. Don is a Galloway Township Resident and also manages the very well known band, "Don't call me Francis" .

Investigating the Paranormal

first met John Piggott and his research team from White Raven Paranormal Investigations, when they shared the results of their research at the Cape May County Library. Having been part of their captivated audience, I was very curious about their communication with the ‘other side’.

According to John, South Jersey is more prone to paranormal activity for several reasons. Environmentally, we have the elements to create a natural energy through the blend of salt water and quartz in the beach sand-this combination being equivalent to a low tech battery. Energy imprints can result from the area’s spiritual people, specifically generations of Lenni Lenape who protected and preserved the land. The more energy that was expended, the more likely the area would have an imprint as a power source for activity. ‘Spiritual’ energy is a reference to the universal life force, which continues on after death.

For some, paranormal research is in conflict with their religious upbringing. As a lifelong Christian, John sees the afterlife as the evolution of the soul. His earliest contact with an individual’s spirit was as a teen, working on a stock car pit crew. He’d witnessed fleeting glimpses of a man in a mechanic’s jumpsuit, found his tools placed in a pile in the middle of the floor and had his radio turn on and off on its own. They’ve joked that they had a haunted race car shop! His team partner, Kelli Muller, had a much different experience prior to becoming involved in the research.

Her interactions with the paranormal began as a child and developed into her lifelong interest. Together John and Kelli formed their own investigative group that includes Kelli’s children, Robert and Amberlee, Kara Brehm, Bob Cooper, Eileen Jennings and John Matteo, nearly all of whom, have backgrounds as firefighters.

Most recently, I joined the group to witness firsthand, the science behind the spiritual. Although their homebase is in Erma, the White Raven team traveled up to Mays Landing, where activity is ripe for exploring.

We chose a public building in the historic downtown district, where artifacts could easily have attachments to their prior owners.

John says all of the equipment they use has a scientific base. They include devices that measure electromagnetic fields, static fields, temperature, air flow, digital audio recorders and many others with “nightshot” capabilities.

These devices all capture evidence which can then be downloaded onto computers and reviewed. They carefully scrutinize all of the evidence, looking for plausible explanations.

The final decision of what the evidence identifies is for the client’s interpretation. They will not use items like Ouija Boards, “voice boxes,” or any device that can be manipulated to give ambiguous or false positive readings.

After they set up their equipment, the wait usually begins, but this was no ordinary investigation! Within minutes of the ‘baseline sweep’ (to get the normal EMF readings), a spike with a slight temperature drop indicated that there were more than just the seven of us in the room! Between John and Kelli, they were able to ascertain to ‘whom’ they were speaking! As the communication continued we witnessed the amazing ability to converse with a soul who’s been departed for nearly seventy years! We were even able to confirm who his actual brother was, verse his brother in law!

When asked of John any advice for someone interested in paranormal research, he replied, “Seek out groups that are experienced, heed their advice, learn as much as you can from their experiences and techniques and always treat any spirits with respect. After all, they were once people too!”
