got to witness a really significant act of kindness this week. For their 10th annual giveaway, a local business surprised a mother of three in Egg Harbor Township by giving her a new roof, gutters, and painting for her home. The recipient had lost her husband in May after he had struggled with a long and difficult battle with cancer. I was there to take photos when she received this special gift. All three of her children were standing at her side, and as I watched their faces, I was overcome with a sense of warmth. This act of generosity, along with countless other small and large examples of love and kindness, is what the holidays are all about. It's not the gifts or the decorations, the lights or
the big toys. Rather, the ways in which we take care of each other offer the most powerful reason to celebrate. Each year, we are bombarded with advertisements that claim to share the recipe for the perfect Christmas or Hanukkah. Mountains of gifts with big ribbons, beautifully decorated trees, and tables set grandly for large gatherings flash across our screens. In reality, my plates don't match, my gatherings keep getting smaller, and nothing in my yard is too spectacular. I know I'm not the only one. For most of us, the holiday season is far from ideal, and many struggle with grief and depression this time of year. Sometimes, it comes from a feeling of inadequacy for not living up to an unrealistic, picture-perfect holiday expectation. In his column, Senior Moments, Charles Eberson delves into the sensation of grief and how it can often resurface during the holidays. Rather than buying into the media-driven stereotypes of what our holidays should look like, I'm going to focus on the real moments. For a dose of holiday
authenticity, check out our spotlight on Eileen Dillion on page 28. With her team of volunteers, she is collecting scarves, attaching kind notes, and leaving them tied to poles or trees in Atlantic City for the homeless or less fortunate. With this mission to "Share the Warmth," Eileen exemplifies the reason for the season. I watched the classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" with my son last night. You probably recall that the Grinch hated Christmas and tried to stop it by stealing everything from the Whos. He crept into their homes and took their decorations, gifts, and even their food, but Christmas came anyway. In his Grinch wisdom, he states: "It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags. Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store. Christmas perhaps means a little bit more." he holiday season is filled with celebrations and cheer, but it’s also a time where people indulge a bit more than usual; in fact, many Americans will gain between 5-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That is a significant amount of weight in four short weeks. And much of it comes from extra calories we don’t think about, like what we’re drinking. So to avoid that holiday weight gain along with eating a clean diet, practicing the 80/20 rule and making sure to fit in those weekly workouts it’s time to you may want to take a peek at your alcohol consumption. I enjoy and recommended to my clients a few healthier cocktail recipes that are full of Christmas spirit, without all of the added sugar and additives often found in pre-made mixes and drinks. Let’s get real for a moment, we know alcoholic beverages aren’t good for us! Especially high calorie cocktails like eggnog which has weighing in at 223 calories and 11 grams of fat per serving. Beverages like these are basically a cheeseburger in a mug, friends. I really don’t expect you to go without any holiday merriment, but you may want to take a look at what you’re drinking and be an informed party goer. I want you to enjoy holiday parties and get togethers without derailing your healthy lifestyle and workouts. These healthier cocktail recipes are full of Christmas spirit, without all of the added sugar and additives often found in pre-made mixes and drinks. These delicious drinks have ingredients like rosemary, sage, ginger, lemon, cinnamon, & cranberries that have tons of health benefits and also happen to taste and smell amazing! Enjoy ! The most wonderful time of the year. With a few helpful tips you can still enjoy the libations the holiday brings and not stretch out the waistline.
KOMBUCHA COSMOPOLITAN 198 calories per glass
Drink a cosmo and get your probiotics too! That’s right; this refreshing Kombucha Cosmopolitan is perfect for the holidays and celebrations all year long! The festive combo of cranberry and lime is refreshing and has a little kick from the Kombucha tea. Probiotics help maintain GI and gut health which is especially important if you tend to indulge this time of year. Ingredients ▶1▶ 1/2 ounces gluten free Vodka 1 ounce orange liqueur ▶1/2 ▶ large lime, juiced

Sangria is a festive way to infuse wine with fresh fruits herbs. In this recipe, we used cranberries, apples, and fresh rosemary to take this wine from ordinary to extraordinary! Ingredients ▶1▶ bottle Pinot Grigio (we used the Barefoot brand) 1/4 cup of apple cider ▶6 ▶ whole cranberries ▶6 ▶ cranberries cut in half ▶1/2 ▶ a golden delicious apple cut into chunks 8 sprigs of Rosemary Directions Cut 6 cranberries in half, and chop 1/2 half of a golden delicious apple into chunks. Pour Pinot Grigio into a pitcher or your desired serving container, and add in all the cranberries, rosemary, and apple. Let the Sangria chill for at least four hours before serving, and garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh Rosemary.
APPLE SPICED MAMOSA 159 calories per glass
Just like apple pie! This delicious glass of bubbly Apple Spiced Mimosa is perfect for your holiday brunch or dinner party, and much lower in calories than most holiday drinks. Ingredients ▶2 ▶ champagne flutes ▶1▶ bottle of champagne (you won't use the whole bottle) 1 1/4 cups no-sugar-added apple juice ▶1/4 ▶ teaspoon ground cinnamon pinch of ground nutmeg (optional) For Sugar Rim ▶1▶ 1/4 teaspoon coconut palm sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
ROSEMARY GIN FIZZ 129 calories per glass INGREDIENTS 3 one-inch sprigs of fresh rosemary 1 small lemon, juiced ½ teaspoon honey 1 ½ ounces gin 3 ounces club soda INSTRUCTIONS In a small drinking glass, muddle the fresh rosemary, lemon juice and honey. Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the gin and top with club soda. Give it a little swirl with a spoon. That’s it! GRINCH PUNCH 171 Calories per glass A cup full of this frothy citrus punch would
make any Grinch’s heart grow! This is another lower calorie dessert beverage that’s extremely festive and easily made non-alcoholic for any younger party goers.
Ingredients ▶1▶ container lime sherbert. (Low sugar if possible ) 1 bottle of champagne or prosecco ▶3 ▶ bottles of Izzes Clementine Sparkling Soda 1 fresh lime for garnish Directions To dust the rim of your glass just wet the rim of the glass with water and sprinkle lightly with sugar. Add 2 tablespoons of lime sherbet (sub with sorbet if dairy free) to each glass. Add equal parts of Champagne and Izzes Clementine soda. Squeeze 1 wedge of lime into your drink and use another wedge for garnish.
HOLIDAY MOSCOW MULE. 124 calories per glass
Kick off your next party with this Holiday Moscow Mule with fresh mint and ginger! We love this drink because it is low in calorie, but loaded with fresh mint and bright holiday flavors. The fun garnishes on this beverage take this cocktail from special to spectacular, and we promise this is the perfect signature cocktail to share with friends.
Ingredients ▶1▶ shot of vodka ▶1/2 ▶ can of Ginger beer (We used Q Ginger Beer) 1 shot of cranberry juice ▶4 ▶ fresh mint leaves and 1 slice of fresh ginger peeled and muddled Copper Moscow mule cup ▶Ice ▶ Optional Garnishes ▶Lime ▶ wedge Orange peel curl Cinnamon stick ▶Sugar ▶ dusted cranberries Directions Muddle the fresh mint and ginger or chop very fine. Add ice to your copper mug. Pour in the vodka, ginger beer, and cranberry juice. Add in garnishes To make the sugar dusted cranberries rinse cranberries with water and just sprinkle with sugar. 10th Anniversary of the Roof Give Away, they decided to dedicate it to First Responders. They requested nominations from the community for first responders in need of a roof and/or home repairs. Jodi Algeri, a mother of three highschool and college age children, lost her husband, Lieutenant David Algeri, a member of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, to cancer this past May. She was chosen as this year's recipient. Larry knocked on her door personally to tell her the news. "There is nothing more satisfying than giving back," reflects Larry. "I feel obligated

magine your doorbell rings on a Friday afternoon. You look out and see 15 police officers, a giant cow in a Santa suit, business men holding flowers and balloons and reporters with cameras everywhere. This is exactly what happened to Jodi Algeri of Egg Harbor Township this past Friday, December 8th. Larry Stiteler, President and Founder of East Coast Roofing, Siding and Windows greeted Jodi at the front door and told her the good news. She was the winner of the 10th Annual Roof Giveaway. Jodi stepped outside to greet everyone with her three children by her side, Angelo, 23, Marla, 20 and Gina, 16. Jodi lost her husband, Lieutenant David Algeri of EHTPD to cancer this past May. Shaun Stiteler, the Operations Director of East Coast Roofing, Siding and Windows said he “loved being part of a business that gives back to the community.” Cornelius Wilson, own of Cleanlines Painting and Powerwashing said “It’s always good to give back to the community. We are honored to give and hope to lighten their holiday.”

The Hooters, who played to a sold-out Music Pier in their Ocean City debut last July, will return this summer for two concerts on June 19 and June 20. The band burst onto the Philadelphia and Jersey Shore music scene in 1980 with hits like “And We
Danced” and “All You Zombies.” Their songwriting led to fellow artists’ hits like “Time After Time” (Cyndi Lauper) and “One Of Us” (Joan Osborne). Simon Lake, A Pioneer from Pleasantville
S

When I was a young boy, I read his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and built the “Argonaut Jr.” to prove his my imagination was fired. I began to concept would work. wheels, and a diver’s hatch, that was tested successfully in the Atlantic Highlands of New Jersey by Sandy Hook. This success led to the formation of the Lake Submarine Company in 1895, where Lake built the “Argonaut”, a 36 foot submarine, which was the first to operate successfully at sea. After the “Argonaut” completed a 2,000 mile journey from Norfolk to New York in 1898, Lake received a congratulatory telegram from Jules Verne. In 1901 Lake formed the Lake Torpedo Boat Company and built the “Protector”, a military submarine. Unfortunately, the U.S. Navy was already contracted with Lake’s rival John Holland, so Lake travelled to Europe to find a buyer. Eventually he sold his submarine to Russia who was at war with Japan. Lake continued his work in Europe and while living in
London shared an office with the Wright Brothers, who were also there selling their inventions because of lack of interest from the U.S. government. At the outbreak of WWI Lake returned to the U.S. at the request of the Navy to build submarines for them, giving up 40 million dollars in foreign contracts. Although most countries used submarines for military use, Lake promoted their peaceful, positive uses like underwater farming of natural

"Argonaut" resources, transporting cargo and exploration. In 1930, Lake collaborated on the first Trans-Atlantic Submarine Expedition designed to explore under-ice passageways for commercial submarines. Bringing his life full circle Lake named the sub the “Nautilus” and it was christened in 1931 by Jean Jules Verne, the grandson of Jules Verne. Lake continued to improve submarine design, and during his lifetime was granted USS Simon Lake over 200 patents. Amongst his other ideas were a tunnel design for under the English Channel, high-rise parking lots and prefabricated homes made of concrete. Simon lake is now considered the “Father of the Modern Submarine”. Some tributes to his contribution to naval history are the full scale reconstruction of his first submarine, the Argonaut Jr in 1967, 1994 and 2010. The naming of the Simon Lake School in Milford CT, Simon Lake Drive in the Atlantic Highlands NJ, and Simon Lake Hall at Atlantic Cape Community College NJ. His name appears on a submarine memorial in South Toms River and in 1964 the U.S. Navy honored him by naming a ship - a submarine, the USS Simon Lake.

e is a large, 9yr old, solid gray domestic short haired cat with striking green eyes. George was brought to the shelter with his brother, Pierre. Their owners moved from Florida to Ocean City only to find out upon arrival that they were not allowed to have pets at the residence they rented. So, after that long drive up the coast, they were dropped off at the shelter. Reeling from confusion of what just happened, George was a bit shy and stand-offish at first. He has since come out of his shell with some extra TLC from our staff and volunteers and has become extremely sweet and affectionate. George seems as though he would prefer a quiet home. Calm
children over 12 would be ok. Younger children may be ok also, visit depending. George is good with other cats and even though he's never lived with dogs, he probably would adjust in time.

adie is a female Beagle mix who is 9 years old. Sadie is a sweet darling who enjoys snoozing and lounging with you as much as a good walk or trot in the yard. Sadie is personable, friendly, and outgoing; she also loves to kisses! She Can still be spry and enjoys light exercise. Sadie has many standard Beagle qualities those familiar and adoring of the breed can appreciate. She has a beautiful thick coat, ruddy with white and a face as sweet as her personality. Sadie was saved from a rotten situation (being given away at a yard sale) by a wonderful couple who saw this beautiful pooch who had been neglected and ignored for years. They brought her to our haven to find a proper forever home. Sadie is looking for a home with people familiar and fond of her breed and their traits, though experienced dog owners are also encouraged. Sadie is okay with chil-
dren (visit depending) and strangers, though a less active household is better for her; she is likely okay with other pets - dogs require meet and greet, by appointment only; best for her are folks with ample down time for lounging, exploring and cuddling. Come meet Sadie!

In my opinion, you can never have too many cookbooks and anyone who enjoys cooking will love to receive one of these. I have broken them down by category so you can find the perfect one for that person on your list who loves to cook. Keep it local. Several years ago I received The Jersey Shore Cookbook and it quickly became a favorite. It features recipes from popular restaurants along the Jersey Shore, including many of my favorites like Jon and Patty’s and Iron Room. From this book I’ve made the Charred Jersey Tomato Salad with Sweet Corn, Asparagus Tips and Herb Yogurt. It’s a colorful and delicious salad, perfect for summer entertaining. I love giving this book as a gift to Jersey friends as well as out of
Dorie Greenspan never disappoints. Her recipes are fairly simple and always make me feel like a rock star in the kitchen. Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook is another baking cookbook that I frequently turn to when I need a tried and true recipe for sweets. Cooking with Kids. My husband tells me repeatedly that I need to publish my own cookbook filled with recipes for cooking with kids. Until that happens I will rely on Catherine McCord’s recipes. Andrea is a farmer in the Pacific Northwest and her debut cookbook is organized by season. I like to cook seasonally as well so I really enjoy her recipes. They are simple, versatile and always healthy. Her food photography is fantastic so all of her recipes look mouth-watering. One of my other favorite bloggers is Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen. Her newest cookbook just arrived on my bookshelf last week and it is full of recipes I can’t wait to try. Her first cookbook is one I cook from all the time. I enjoy her writing as much as I enjoy her recipes. A few other favorites that are in my regular rotation include VB6 by Mark Bittman (great vegan recipes), Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi (some of the most innovative vegetable recipes I’ve seen) and The Food You Crave by Elie Krieger (very healthy recipes). Winter Weather Watch
ell... Winter wea t h e r is definitely settling into South Jersey this week so I hope you have the scarves and the hats and parkas ready! It's going to be a wild ride from this point forward. We've been setting the stage for big cold to come down from the Arctic since the end of November. Contrary to what the Climate models painted for December, we ARE heading towards well below average territory by the end of the month. Let's take this most recent blast of cold as an example real quick. Less than two weeks ago, it was nowhere to be seen on most of the long range models. Why? However, that isn't hard to do being that we only picked up 7" of snow last year and had record warm temperatures! I think we hang onto the cold on and off all Winter. It's not going to be a crazy cold one... but cold enough. I'm going around 15% above the norm in terms of snowfall. We should see nearly 20" of snow (mainland) before the season wraps up. There's plenty of evidence to suggest that the variables will continue
to line up through the course of this Winter to allow my forecast thoughts to come to fruition. Watch out as we continue into December. We are half way through but I'm liking the pattern for snow! Teaching Kids to Give Back

he holiday season is upon us and everywhere you look, we are encouraged to buy, buy, buy. I get it, the holidays are about gift giving but after awhile it gets to be too much. My mailbox is constantly filled with toy catalogues that my kids love to look through and circle what they want. If they watch a show on television, they tell me what toys they want to add to their wish list. While I understand that they are kids and kids love getting gifts, I also think that it’s important to teach them the value of giving back. When my children were born my mother-in-law started a wonderful tradition with them. She opened them each a savings account and each year around the holidays they take the interest earned and donate that to an
organization of their choice. When they were very young, their choices were directed by us but as they get older, they are very thoughtful about what population they want to help. Last year my daughter wanted to help butterflies and my son wanted to help turtles so my mother-in-law looked for organizations that helped both of these. She types up a letter to send along with the money explaining where the money is coming from, has the kids sign their name and has them address the envelope. Most of the time the kids receive an acknowledgement letter which is so exciting to them. Last year the organization that my daughter donated to even included a blurb about her charitable giving in their newsletter. She was thrilled! This year my son is going to make his donation to the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project and my daughter is going to donate to the Red Cross to help people affected by the California wildfires. It’s an excellent opportunity to teach kids about the world around them while at the same time encouraging them to think of others.
I try to teach my children about giving back all year round and not just at the holidays. Since we were not going to use our free turkey from Shoprite at Thanksgiving we donated it to the food bank. I co-manage the Linwood Farmers Market and at our winter market last year we set up a collection area for canned goods. The kids and I took the collection along with some other canned items

They asked a lot of interesting questions about where the food goes. Sometimes it can be challenging to find a place which allows children to volunteer. One of our favorite places for volunteering is Jewish Family Services in Margate. They receive a truckload of food every other month and all of that food needs to be unloaded from the truck, sorted and stocked on the shelves. They welcome young volunteers and my children love doing this. I subscribe
to their newsletter so whenever I see an opportunity that will fit with my kids schedule, I sign up. Each summer we participate in Our Children Making Change, a wonderful program that teaches kids about philanthropy. If you are looking for ways to get your kids involved in giving back, consider participating in this program over the summer or reach out to local organizations to find out what their needs are. It can be as simple as purchasing a toy to donate to Toys for Tots or volunteering at a senior center, having children play games with residents. Crowd-Pleasing Holiday Potluck Ideas
ndulging in delicious food is one of the best parts of the holidays, and you’ll likely be in constant need of something tasty to take along to all those holiday potlucks. To be ready for any invitation, keep ingredients for your favorite recipes on-hand and use multipurpose kitchen tools, like a high-performance blender, to expedite prep time, quickly chop veggies or cheese, and blend everything from dips and batters to dressings and sauces. Not sure what to make for your next potluck? Here are some simple, crowd-pleasing recipes. Appetizers Small-bite hors d’oeuvres are perfect potluck fare. Dips or spreads served with veggies and chips are quick to make and travel easily. Try a cashew French onion dip for a non-dairy version of the traditional favorite. Be sure to soak the cashews ahead of time to achieve a super-smooth texture. If you’re able to keep food warm, a hearty spinach artichoke dip with pita bread will satisfy guests’ cravings for comfort foods. Or, take a new twist on a conventional recipe with a cauliflower hummus. It’s extra creamy and has an added boost of veggies
from the addition of roasted cauliflower. Side Dishes Casseroles will feed a crowd and most can be served at room temperature. Made with russet potatoes and onions, a cheesy potato casserole with cornflake topping won’t last long at any gathering. It’s a satisfying substitute for traditional hash browns at brunch, and is great for all ages. Alternately, a vegetarian butternut squash casserole is a light, sweet complement to heavier potluck fare. Or, if you’re short on ingredients or inspiration, a frittata filled with cheese, veggies and protein (whatever you have on hand) will work. Bake or slow cook the frittata the night before and add a quick sprinkle of herbs or chives before packing it to go. Desserts If you have a sweet tooth, it only makes sense to volunteer to bring your favorite dessert. Save time by using a blender to mix batter in advance for a big batch of almond cookies or snickerdoodles. If baking for a cookie exchange or large gathering, start early and freeze the cookies until party day. Cakes, pumpkin and apple pies are also easy to make ahead and freeze. Simply wrap a freshly baked, cooled cake or pie in plastic wrap and place in a freezer bag. Before an event, defrost in the bag at room temperature. If your dish has multiple components, separate warm and cold items during transport and use insulated carriers to maintain optimal temperatures. Make something that doesn’t require a ton of prep time and equipment once you arrive, unless you’ve asked the host in advance. Bring trivets or serving utensils, if needed, and don’t assume the host will have extras. Don’t get caught unprepared this holiday party season. t started with a small group of knitters in Indiana. Together they knit scarves and on Veterans Day they took the scarves to a park in their city where they knew homeless veterans tended to populate. They tied each scarf to a tree or pole with a kind note attached
that explained that it is free to take. This small act of kindness exploded on the internet under the hashtag “Share the Warmth.” Eileen Dillion of Ventnor saw this and was inspired. “ I’m not a knitter, I didn’t want to go that far, but I knew there was something I could do to ‘Share the Warmth’ with homeless people right here in Atlantic City,” said Eileen. Northfield hit the streets. They began tying the scarves, along with a kind note, to trees and poles in O’Donnell Memorial park in Atlantic City. “At one point, we were drawing a crowd of onlookers that seemed intrigued by what we were doing,” said Eileen. She said it felt great to be out and helping others, especially during the holidays. Eileen is no stranger to helping others. In fact, she is the Community Initiative Coordinator at Jewish Family Services in Margate. She also has a Facebook Page called FB-Angels which she uses to communicate and inspire others to create their own good deeds throughout the community. Eberson anukkah, Christmas and New Year’s can be wonderful times of the year with families and friends joining together in celebrations accompanied by plenty of sumptuous meals, drinks and of course, cookies. But for many people feelings of sorrow or grief that we may have managed to push down in order to function effectively on a daily basis bubbles to the surface during the holidays. There may be empty seats at the table or you no longer having to shop for a gift for that special person for example. While I do not purport myself to be an expert in the field of psychology, I have more than a passing interest in emotions associated with grief having lost family and friends very dear to me. It is my intent here to offer some measure of comfort to readers who may be going through difficult times during these holidays and while I have gleaned information from what I consider to be trusted sources, i.e., Psychology Today and AARP it is by no means to be interpreted as medical advice or treatment by a healthcare professional. Here are some strategies that may help:

Grief is the process by which you heal. It takes time. Constantly trying to escape it or numbing it with alcohol only prolongs the anguish. You may not want to participate in a holiday with all of its celebrations. If this is the case, plan some alternate comforting activities but let someone know what you will be doing. Suggest to someone close that they check in with you on that day. Acknowledge those who have passed on by participating in a related holiday ritual in his or her memory such as lighting candles, making a donation in their name or planting a tree for example. You may feel a wide range of emotions during this time. It’s easy to fall into a focus on the sadness, horror or anger. Allow yourself to feel emotions without judging yourself. Accept the inevitable ups and downs; joy one moment and gut wrenching sadness the next. Holding in pent up emotions is not healthy. If you want to cry, it’s okay to cry. You may want to write emotions in a journal.

Try channeling your energies in positive ways. Perform acts of kindness. Volunteering, donating gifts, serve meals at a soup kitchen, etc. Set healthy boundaries. You decide what activities you want to participate in. Don’t feel obligated to take part in things that you can’t handle. If you decide to participate, drive yourself so you don’t feel trapped and are free to leave whenever you want. Limit holiday parties to small gatherings with closest friends and family. Surround yourself with positivity. Anticipation is sometimes worse than the actual events. Plan comforting events weeks before the holiday so you have something to look forward to. Create realistic expectations for yourself but most of all, be gentle with yourself. Accept that things have changed. The holidays will never be same as they were and this will help manage expectations. Choose to create new memories. Go to a new location for family gatherings, attend the theater, travel, invite friends over. Talk with loved ones about your emotions. If you want, share with them about your loss and invite them to share any stories of loss they may have. Often people are reluctant to mention the deceased for fear of upsetting you. Look for simple pleasures to enjoy; one tiny thing each day for which you can be grateful. Focus on small things in your life that will bring you some peace and happiness. Think about your loved ones who are still with you and even the small pleasures like tastes, smells and sounds that are comforting. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. While sharing the difficult time you are going through with loved ones may be enough, you may need more support. Support groups are available or you can contact a professional counselor to help you with your grief. Grieving is one of the most universal of all experiences. You are not alone.
I sincerely hope most of my readers do not have to deal with grief at all let alone during the holiday season but if so, may your joy outshine your sadness. From there, they would receive free bus transpor tation to Margate to check out the new houses and the gardens bursting with rose bushes, junipers, and hydrangeas. Most Monopoly players of the Monopoly game do not realize that Marven Gardens is the only property that is not an actual street in Atlantic City and that the property is a neighborhood. It was misspelled Marvin Gardens. The other “yellow” properties in the game are Ventnor Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. As the last of the yellows, Marvin Gardens is also one of the most expensive. In Monopoly, a house on Marven Gardens would cost you $120.00. In reality, you would need to add several more zeroes to the Mavin Gardens real estate price to own property in this neighborhood. An average home in Marven Gardens today would be at least $550,000. In 1972, the Jack Nicholson film, The King of Marvin
Gardens, again used the incorrect Mar vin as opposed to the correct Mar ven. The movie was primarily shot in Atlantic City. Ironically, the film crew never ventured down beach to actually film the framed yellow property that bears the name of the movie. If they had, the crew would have been greeted with the Welcome to Marven Gardens sign in front of the neighborhood – spelling correct! Locals recall childhood memories of Margate, including going to see Christmas decorations in Marven Gardens where “the lights attracted so many holiday gawkers that cars were let in on a quota.”

The Story of Hanukkah You Probably Never Heard

he Jewish eight-day holiday of Hanukkah began Tuesday. Its remarkable story inspired both Jews and Christians for centuries. When I was a kid, it was spelled Chanukah. I was taught it was a minor holiday for most Jews. My rabbi complained that only American Jews made a big deal of it because it took place around Christmas. Hanukkah is not mentioned anywhere in the Jewish Old Testament. It is barely mentioned in the Jewish Mishna and Talmud. The complete story of Hanukkah is part of Roman Catholic and
Greek Orthodox Christian Bibles. The English word macabre probably comes from plays that told the Hanukkah story in Catholic churches during the Middle Ages. The Gospel of John describes how Jesus preached in Jerusalem during the “Feast of Dedication” (English for “Hanukkah”). It seems like Jesus went to the capital only during major holidays, when he was protected by large crowds from rural areas like his native Galilee. Hanukkah is not like the Jewish holidays of Passover or Sabbath. There are no special synagogue services. It is a regular day of work and school. Jews light candles at home and praise God for “making mira-
cles for our ancestors during this season”. What were those miracles? The Jewish Talmud describes only one. When the Greeks were driven out of the Jewish Temple, there was only enough pure olive oil to keep the seven-branch menorah lit for one day. However, that one-day supply of oil miraculously burned
for eight days, until new oil could be pressed. The Books of the Maccabees in Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Bibles tell a far more detailed and dramatic story. It begins when Alexander the Great died after con-

quering most of the known world. His top commanders and their descendants then fought each other for the next 200 years over who should run it. The Greek commander who controlled Israel used religion as a weapon. He ordered every nation under his control to publicly worship Zeus and the other Greek gods. Everyone complied except the Jews. Although they paid taxes and obeyed all other laws, Jews stubbornly clung to their Bibles. They refused to work or compete in athletics on Sabbath, refused to eat pork, and refused to offer sacrifices to the Greek gods. Greek officials then decided to eliminate this subversive religion. Any Jew they caught with a Bible was tortured and killed. So was any Jew who refused to work or compete on Sabbath, eat pork, or sacrifice to Greek gods. Eleazer was an elderly philosopher who was respected in the Greek community. When he refused to publicly eat pork, he was arrested, beaten, his skin was stripped off with sharp instruments, and he was burned alive. Hannah and her seven sons were thrown into pans of boiling oil when they refused to renounce their faith. Slowly, Israel’s leading citizens began to comply. It seemed as if the Jewish religion was doomed. But then one priest and his five sons escaped from Jerusalem and hid in caves in the desert. They taught military skills and tactics and fought back against the Greeks. They attracted thousands of followers, and soon became known as “The Hammers” or “Maccabees” in Hebrew. The Maccabees offended many traditional Jews. The Maccabees surprised the Greeks by fighting on the holy Sabbath. The Maccabees negotiated a military alliance with the non-Jewish Roman Republic, and forced the Greeks to divide their forces. After years of struggle, the Maccabees won, and drove the Greeks out of Jerusalem. Most Jews celebrated the survival of the Jewish religion as the miracle of Hanukkah. The Maccabees then became kings of an independent Jewish kingdom. This also offended Jews who believed only a descendant of King David from the tribe of Judah could be king. The Maccabees were from the priestly tribe of Levi. One hundred years later, two spoiled great-grandsons of the Maccabees ruined the miracle. While fighting with each other over who should be king, one invited Pompeii,

the commander of a nearby Roman army for help. Pompeii marched into Jerusalem and instead made Israel another conquered Roman province. Later, Jews inspired by the Hanukkah story rebelled against Rome three times.This time, there were no miracles.The Romans destroyed the Jewish Temple and all Jerusalem. They sold hundreds of thousands of Jewish men, women, and children as slaves throughout the Roman Empire. The Romans even invented “Palestine” as the new name for the ruined Jewish province. This was
when the Maccabee books telling the story of Hanukkah disappeared from the Jewish Bible. Ironically, early Christians were inspired by the Hanukkah story that so many Jews wanted to forget. During the year 64, the Roman Emperor Nero declared Christianity to be a subversive religion. He tried to wipe out Christianity just as the Greeks previously tried to wipe out Judaism. For the next 300 years, Roman soldiers arrested, tortured, and killed Christians throughout the Empire who refused to renounce their faith. Some were covered
with tar and burned alive as human torches. Others were fed to hungry lions in stadiums to entertain cheering crowds. Those early Christians kept their hope alive by remembering how God redeemed the Jews from the Greeks hundreds of years earlier. They kept two Books of the Maccabees in their Bibles. Hanukkah, like all Jewish holidays, falls on a different day each year in our calendar. However, it always falls on the 25th day of Kislev, the month of the Jewish calendar when winter begins. Keep poinsettias looking great through the holidays
A
long with the fragrant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poinsettias make up a key component of holiday decorating. Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico. Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain. The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts, and the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts. Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short peri-

ods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts. Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don't let the plant sit in water. Overor under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom. The Ohio State University Extension says poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradually drying out the plant and
storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape. Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they flower about 10 weeks after the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less. Therefore, to have the plant in full flower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the first part of October until Thanksgiving. Many people find the affordability of poinsettias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth.
Contrar y to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans or animals, but they should not be ingested due to the potential for allergic reactions. Poinsettias can help remove pollutants from indoor air, which is advantageous during the winter months when doors and windows are typically kept closed. Select plants that have dark green foliage and no low or damaged leaves. This ensures the best success for keeping poinsettias looking healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season.

aying goodbye to a family pet is heart wrenching. Last year we had to assist our 16 year old dog, Pepsi, over the “Rainbow Bridge”. It was a difficult decision to come to, but when we noticed her failing in so many ways, we knew it was time. I wrote the following on a scratch pad that very same day: As written on 11/4/16 – I am sitting here at the dining room table listening to the tick-tock of the kitchen clock. The second hand is ticking away to the moment in time that we will be saying goodbye to our beloved dog, Pepsi. She is blissfully unaware that she will only be here, lying in the ray of sun coming through the window, for no more than a couple hours more. She is dreaming her doggie dreams. Dreaming of when she used to run and jump straight into the air. Of the days she could hear the tiniest sound outside and bark to “protect” her family. She is remembering when her humans would throw a ball for her and she would effortlessly chase it. Now, she is not able to see that ball, hear those sounds, or jump at all. Today she can only dream about those things. She is old, tired, and her body aches. We know it’s time and are glad that she does not. We love you, Pepsi.

(Sigh) - I did love that dog. Sometimes after losing a pet, people don’t want to get another one because eventually the same thing will happen and who likes to go through that? It’s too difficult and sad. Plus, no other pet could be as wonderful as the one that passed. We felt that way too. What other dog could possibly be as great as Pepsi? Well, that question was answered in April when Cyril became our new four-legged family member. Our son Adam (who currently lives here) brought him home in April. Cyril is such a joy to have around – energetic, loving and has quite the personality. I love that dog so much, it’s crazy. I never thought I would love another dog even close to the way I loved my “Pepsi girl”. Truth be told, I now don’t want my son to move out because I will miss that dog
too much. My son jokes that I would miss the dog more than I would miss him! (Not true. Honest.) Do I miss Pepsi? Yes, just about every day. But I am thankful to have Cyril, who has taught me that love comes in many different forms and with many different depths of feeling. And while no two loves are the same they are wonderful, nonetheless. If you have recently lost your pet and are thinking you simply cannot bear having a different best friend than the one you lost – give it time. And when you are ready please consider giving a shelter animal a chance. My son got Cyril from the Atlantic County Humane Society, and years ago we got Pepsi from the Ocean City Humane Society. Both times we ended up with great new family members. And so might you!

Winter Solstice

hat do you think of when you hear the word Solstice? The word Solstice is a Latin word meaning “sun stand still.” Several days before and after the solstice, the sun will appear directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere before moving in a northerly direction. This phenomenon is also known as the “turning of the sun.” Celebration of an ancient solar holiday, the solstice is of scientific and spiritual significance throughout our history and the world. American Indians celebrate by performing the Sioux dance, a ritual that takes place at sunrise and sunset to symbolize the connection between heaven and earth to signify new life. There are as
many cultures as there are ways to make offers to this solar holiday. The Winter Solstice is set to occur in our Northern Hemisphere on Thursday, December 21st at 11:28am. The Solstice transpires twice each year as an astronomical phenomenon. It marks the day with the shortest and longest periods of daylight and the longest night of the year, The Solstice is recognized twice, on the longest and shortest days of the year. We designate these two days as the First Day of Winter and Summer. In Ancient times, people would make offerings as the sun set to establish the sun’s return the following day. Offerings for the Winter Solstice can be created by decorating an outdoor edible tree for birds, animals and nature. Hanging peanut butter pine cones, halves of apples filled with bird seed, popcorn strings and cranberry are fun family traditions. The Ursides meteor shower occurs annually between December 17th and 25th, is expected to peak on the evening of Saturday, December 23rd. Weather permitting, stargazers may be able to witness upward of ten meteors per hour, and you will not need any special equipment to witness this event. As we enter the New Year, be on the lookout for the Quadrantids meteor shower, which will peak in the early morning hours of January

DEP AWARDS CONTRACT TO REPAIR SOUTHERN LBI BEACHES USING SAND DREDGED FROM LITTLE EGG INLET Project Will Address Inlet Shoaling That Jeopardizes Safe Boating While Providing Sand for Storm-Damaged Beaches
T
renton – The Department of Environmental Protection has awarded an $18.4 million contract for the replenishment of beaches and dunes on southern Long Beach Island using sand dredged from Little Egg Inlet, a major thoroughfare for boat traffic between southern LBI and Brigantine that has experienced serious shoaling, Commissioner Bob Martin announced today. “This important project will provide additional protections to the southern LBI area by replenishing beaches and dunes that have lost sand due to erosion from storms since completion of a major U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beach fill project last year,” Commissioner Martin said. “At the same time, it will greatly improve boating safety in the heavily used Little Egg Inlet, which has become virtually impassable for most boating traffic due to shoaling.” The contract – awarded to Oak Brook, Illinois-based Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. – is designed to dredge 700,000 cubic yards of sand, with an option to dredge an additional 300,000 cubic yards if needed. The DEP is paying for the project using funds from its Shore Protection Program. The sand will be placed along beaches and
on dunes from Ocean Street in Beach Haven and south through Long Beach Township, repairing areas that sustained erosion as the result of storms since the Army Corps completed a $128 million beach and dune construction project that encompassed much of LBI. The contractor will focus on the area from the terminal groin to Pershing Avenue

Little Egg Inlet in Holgate and the areas just south of Nelson Avenue to Kentford Avenue and just north of Holyoke Avenue to Belvoir Avenue in Beach Haven. The removal of the sand from Little Egg Inlet, in the meantime, will clear a navigable boat channel a mile long and 24 feet below mean sea level to accommodate the nu-
merous commercial and recreational fishing vessels, private boats and other craft that use the inlet to access Barnegat Bay, Great Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. The contractor is immediately beginning to mobilize, with a goal of completing the project by March 1, 2018, in time for the next boating season and at a time of year that takes advantage of natural wave actions that will push additional sand onto the beaches. One of the widest ocean inlets in New Jersey, Little Egg Inlet is extremely dynamic, with shoals constantly shifting with the seasons. The federally marked waterway has never been dredged. Instead, the U.S. Coast Guard every year
would use buoys to mark the deepest and safest natural route through the inlet. The marked channel in this area has at times extended as far as a mile into the ocean. In many places, the channel had become less than six feet below mean sea level, making navigation very difficult, especially when factoring in the rolling of waves in the ocean. In March of this year, the Coast Guard pulled buoys marking the channel due to concerns that buildup of sand in the channel had become too severe for safe passage of boats. The Coast Guard warned boaters that use of the inlet would be at their own risk. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently issued a permit needed to dredge the channel, following an extensive environmental review conducted in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and DEP. The DEP has also issued required permits. The DEP has designed the project to have negligible to no impact on the nearby Holgate section of the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge or migrations of fish, and will work closely with the Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the DEP’s Division of Land Use Regulation and Division of Fish and Wildlife to ensure protection of natural resources.

ast Friday evening I attended an event in Atlantic City called “Second Friday”, held at the Noyes Art Garage. Having heard of but never ventured to. I arrived to find a convenient parking lot providing easy entry to the gallery. The small street windowed front can be deceiving. Beyond the front door, you will find their gift shop along with a display of artwork created by Stockton a variety of local artists for sale. Off to the side is a café serving coffee and light fare. This area also provides great acoustics for showcasing local musicians. Here, vocalist Angela Burton and her trio perform the classics. atagonia Inc. is a company that specializes in sleek fleece jackets and soaring mountain bikes. At the start of this month, however, it represents something much more significant. The company has single-handedly taken on the Trump Administration’s disastrous decision to reduce protected land as of December 4th of this year. The company is initiating what it calls a “radical revolution,” and forcing the environmental terrorists down in D.C. to understand that environmentalism isn’t only about big talk and bumper stickers. According to Kim Bhasin’s December 8, 2017, article written for Bloomberg Politics, executives of Patagonia threatened to sue the administration if it didn’t “back down over the public lands issue.” Trump didn’t, and Patagonia stuck to its guns, filed a law suit, and is seeking a judicial

bond with the outdoors should not be replaced with the whims of regulators thousands and thousands of miles away.” The fact is, the president doesn’t care about the people; he cares about his investments. Trump has business stakes in Shell, Chevron and Exxon Mobile. The sooner drilling begins at Bear Ears and the three other National Parks the Trump administration plans to reduce, the sooner one of the president’s revenue strains sky rockets. Period. And with U.S. citizens in mind, which citizens, exactly is the president referring to? Certainly not the North American tribes that the land is sacred to. The monument designation protects ancient cliff dwellings and ceremonial sites among other things. But after seeing the absolute tragedy that was Standing Rock only months ago, these types of things don’t matter to big business and certainly don’t matter to the people being paid by them down on Capitol Hill. It has been drilled into our heads with right-wing fear mongering by wackos like Roger Stone (if you don’t know who he
is, he’s the charming individual that turned “Lock her up” into a meme, among other various forms of character assassination) that government is evil, but this is not the case at all. Government is for the people. We can vote in people we like; and vote out the ones that we don’t. If a corporation is in charge, this is inherently totalitarian. You cannot vote out a CEO. The more land that Trump decides to give back to the “citizens,” the more these corporations have the ability to take control. A corporation does not care about you; it only cares about the bottom line. So with all this in mind, when you are shopping for your loved ones this holiday season, support the companies that have your best interest in mind: this includes important stuff, like clean air and drinking water. Patagonia, REI and North Face, just to name a few, are the good guys who are using their fortunes the right way: to protect us, other creatures, and the world from those who are systematically destroying it. e broke the news that United States Congressman Frank LoBiondo, R-2 will not be seeking re-election in 2018. At the completion of his current term, LoBiondo will have served a record 12 terms (24 years). It was one of the biggest stories of 2017. For those who thought that LoBiondo would leave early, that's not going to happen. He intends to serve his entire current term. However, the sweepstakes for this coveted seat has begin in earnest. That's because it is the nature of electoral politics, but, also because this seat has been unattainable for nearly a quarter-of-a-century. There is one absolute front-runner as the campaign begins: Senator Jeff Van Drew, who is the most non-partisan elected official you will ever find in our current 50-50 divided nation. Van Drew has won every local, county and state position available to him. Should he win the Congressional seat, it will culminate one of the most successful public service/electoral careers in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Burlington, Camden County and Gloucester, Ocean and Salem Counties history. The Second Congressional District is one of the most sprawling in
the nation; compiled of 8 Counties and 92 municipalities. In addition, the amount of combined geographic territory is also one of the largest in the nation. LoBiondo's record of constituent service has been exemplary. He followed another legend, Bill Hughes, Sr. And, Van Drew, or, whomever wins the seat will be following a legend in LoBiondo. In other words, this district has been served by two men for the past nearly half century. Hughes, a Democrat. LoBiondo, a Republican. The next occupant has some very big shoes and a great tradition of public service to follow. Van Drew is prepared and he's very popular with Democrats, Independents and many Republicans. He has consistently won races that no other Democrat could have even considered possible. When Van Drew started winning at the County and State levels more than two decades ago, he became the second Democrat since Reconstruction to do so. Not only has Van Drew been successful in getting himself elected. He has carried a series of unknowns to big wins at the state level. That's called "coattails" and it's very rare in electoral politics. The leading Republican at this time is former New Jersey Assemblyman Vince Polistina. Polistina is an excellent candidate, who also shown the ability to raise money. This will prove to be essential because Van Drew is a prodigious fundraiser, who also has the formal backing of New Jersey Democratic Power Potentate, George E. Norcross, III. When a candidate has Norcross' support, they don't always win. But, they almost always win. Norcross is

enthusiastically backing Van Drew for the Congressional seat. Polistina is also a candidate from central casting. He's got the resume and the good looks, too. He is a successful business-owner, who knows what it's like to sign the front of a check. He meets a regular weekly payroll and he well knows how government negatively impacts small business owners in America. Were it not for the exceptional and unique nature of Van Drew, Polistina would be the early favorite. Soon-to-be former Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian is also seriously looking at a potential run as a Republican. On the Democratic side, Tanzie Youngblood is running an aggressive campaign for the June 5, 2018 Democratic Nomination. Youngblood is both a widow and Blue Star Mother. She has dedicated her life to education and expanding opportunities for children and has more than 30 years of experience in the classroom. Democrat Sean A. Thom is also running for the position. Thom is also an educator and he's running unapologetically as a progressive Democrat Without a doubt, Youngblood and Thom will be running to the far left of Van Drew. Thom is already aggressively campaigning that "Van Drew has shown time and time again he is not a Democrat; instead he is a career politician who does not espouse the values of our party." Strong words, no doubt. However, they don't square with reality. Van Drew has already received the formal endorsements of all eight (8) Democratic Party County Chairman in the District. In addition, Van Drew has already earned some coveted local and County endorsements including: Atlantic City Mayor-elect Frank Gil-
liam and Atlantic County Freeholder Ernest Coursey. Coursey is the highest elected African-American in Atlantic County. Despite facing Democratic candidates, who will be making a cottage industry out of declaring that Van Drew is not "Democrat-enough," Van Drew will roll to victory in the June 5, 2018 Democratic Primary Election. The scary part for Republicans in this upcoming election cycle is the fact that Van Drew is an even better General Election candidate. As has been the case for than a quarter-of-a-century, we will be providing you with the best election insight and breaking news. The race for the next Congressman for District 2 will be a very interesting ride; both the Republican and Democratic Primary elections. Since 1919, The American Legion has served as the voice and home of wartime veterans. Over the years, the American Legion has been responsible for creating some of the most important projects in support of veterans such as the development of the Veterans Administration in 1921, the GI Bill of Rights in 1944.
The Legion was the single largest donor (one million dollars) for the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC and spearheaded studies and legislation in response to the results of Agent Orange on Vietnam Veterans. The Legion, along with the Woman's Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion have sent over 20,000 students to Boys and Girls State to receive citizen training; many of whom have gone on to stellar careers, such as Tom Brokaw, Bill Clinton, Neil Armstrong and Michael Jordan. Nationally, The American Legion Family supports numerous Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and provides annual scholarships to deserving Eagle Scouts.

Since it was chartered in 1999, Post 524 has been recognized as one of the most progressive and active posts in New Jersey. We have a current combined membership of over 500; with a very active Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion. In keeping with our motto “Veterans Serving Veterans”, the following is a list of some of our numerous and ongoing community projects. The R & R committee provides a free condo for soldiers returning from overseas deployment and their waiting families. Each Veteran is recognized with an honor escort upon their arrival and a welcome package provided by local businesses. The “Coffee Express” sends over 200 Care packages to our soldiers overseas each year. We are partners in the Walk for the Wounded and Run for the Fallen and coordinate the Hiring our Heroes Project bringing together potential employers and veterans. Every month we visit the Vineland Veterans Nursing Home to serve food and conduct Bingo Nights. We serve as the liason between our Veterans and the VA Medical System which includes having the VA Mobil Medical Van stationed at our post twice a month. After many years of serving our community, Post 524 is now asking for your support to help build our new home designed to better serve future generations of veterans. The many ways to recycle Christmas greeting cards

he Greeting Card Association says Americans purchase some 6.5 billion greeting cards every year. Of those, around 1.6 billion are Christmas cards. Exchanging cards is a great way for people to show their loved ones that they're thinking about them, and such cards make for festive ornaments to display around homes. But when the holiday season ends, recycling those cards into other items can make good use of the paper resources and turn what's normally a single-use item into an enduring trinket. Turn this year's cards into next year's gift tags. Cut out circles, rectangles or any shape you desire. Otherwise, visit the scrapbooking aisle of your favorite craft store and purchase a paper punch to make easy work of cutting those shapes. Transform a greeting card into a mini puzzle for a youngster. Glue silly characters from Christmas cards onto a sheet of magnet. Then use these magnets for decorations next year. Frame favorite cards so their messages can endure year after year. Turn a beautiful card into a keepsake. Use a decoupage medium to attach a card to a ceramic or wood backing. Coat with a polyurethane top coat to protect it. Use greeting cards to make wine

obody can curse what God has blessed. I will testify that having a “Merry Christmas” has nothing to do with presents and everything to do with His presence. And guess what? From the beginning of time, God allows His promises to be born in strange places. “In a manger” (Luke 2:7). My Savior was born outside the world’s acceptance. “No room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). Having a "Merry Christmas" isn't about being liked by the crowd, but it does signify that not even a “King Herod” can take you out. “Stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him” (Matthew 2:13). Remember, the devil doesn’t fight us because of where we are; he fights us because of where we are going. And what God desires to be born cannot be stopped by mere man. The meaning of Christmas shows that we should never allow the extraordinary to become ordinary in our lives. “For who has despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10). If God has begun something in your life, do not abort the “baby” because of pain. Stay where you are in God’s protection, no matter the condemnation, for when the pain gets greater, the birth is soon after. PUSH. DELIVER. “So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered” (Luke 2:6).
"Merry Christmas" means God will deliver His promise in spite of us. “And she will bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). And He desires to be with us, regardless of our circumstances. “And they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23.) Understand that God assumes all responsibility when He places a promise inside of you. And even confirmations will be sent that what you birthed is from divinity--when you have Christ at its center, wrapped in humility. “And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12). And the purpose--the promise--must always give “glory to God in the highest, ” and the gift must bring “peace and goodwill toward men” (Luke 2:14). That is the meaning of "Merry Christmas." A Passion For Thinking Differently

had the honor and pleasure of attending our Public Relations Council luncheon, here in Atlantic City last week, with well known Celebrity Entrepreneur Scott Petinga. Raised in Atlantic City, Scott now makes his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota yet has lived in many places across the Globe from Reading , PA to California and several places in between. Scott fascinated me with his entrepreneurial spirit and what has happened in his life to get him to where he is. As I always say, everything leads you to where you are. Scott is a 1991 graduate of Atlantic City High School. He now operates 14 companies and three nonprofit organizations. All of his businesses incorporate a philanthropic component. Petinga recently published his first book, titled “No One Ever Drowned in Sweat: G.R.I.T. — The Stuff of Leaders and Champions.” G.R.I.T. stands for guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity, and Petinga said it has always been a

Chicken Bone Beach, a pictorial history of Atlantic City’s Missouri Avenue Beach during the 1920’s through the 1960’s. Music in the museum was provided by a young man, Sherode Jamison, whose voice filled the room with his own distinctive tone and range. Partnered with Trevor Williams on the keyboards, this
duo held a large group of listeners captive. Two artists that enjoyed inquiry were Steve Kuzma and Ron Ross Cohen. Steve Kuzma is an illustrator, educator and musician. His work focuses on a variety of subjects from the beauty of the shore to nature. He has provided art for an array of nationally-known publications and television stations. Ron Ross Cohen displays his delightful pieces, somewhat whimsical while sending a specific message to the audience. The Noyes Art Garage is a venue filled with visionaries who not only
