imberly Shurig, AKA Kimmie Kocktail, is a veteran of the hospitality and entertainment industry. She is the winner of 2006 Hilton Supervisor of the Year and authored the AAA Diamond rating handbook for the Atlantic City Hilton which held a 4-diamond rating for five years. A Time For Gratitude From the Editor

H

ello November. This is the time of year I finally relinquish summer. We have the most delightful fall or "shoulder season" here. With temperatures in the 70s and warm ocean breezes, the joys of summer continue through September and October.

November is the month of harvest and gratitude. Warm soup, hot tea, cozy blankets and hoodies all come into play. The leaves burst with color, then quickly fall and crunch below our feet.

Shore Local is full of gratitude for our wonderful columnists and this issue, we have the honor of welcoming Kimberly Shurig, also known as Kimmie Kocktail, as a new regular columnist. Kimberly is a food and beverage columnist and is also an on-air host of 2 Chicks and a Chef, along with Natalie Hitzel and Chef Michael D'Angelo.

Together they keep the legacy of Ed Hitzel alive with Hitzel approved high

integrity, non-biased food reviews. Be sure to check out Kimberly's column on page 32 featuring Somers Point Restaurant Week which begins Oct. 15.

Pham said that is one of the misconceptions about veterans’ benefits. Many veterans do not receive full health care benefits upon returning from active duty.

The first Veterans Smile Day was held in 2012. Now it is a nationwide event. The 2012 event at Brickworks Dental helped 35 veterans receive dental care for everything from a routine treatment to extractions, and even root canals, according to the website veteranssmileday.org.

AYS LANDING – Brickworks Dental Dr. Deryck Pham, a Navy veteran, wanted to give back to local veterans who have served the country the best way he knew how: to give them free dental care as part of Veterans Smile Day. On Saturday, Nov. 4, Pham and other dentists and dental care specialists will provide free dental care from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to more than 110 veterans at Brickworks Dental, 5429 Harding Highway.

Pham, 40, said the event is in its sixth year and continues to grow.

A benefit held Saturday, Oct. 14, to benefit Veterans Smile Day was held at Clancy’s By The Bay in Somers Point. It

Dr. Pham and other dental care specialists help more than 100 veterans during the Smile Day event. was a huge success.

“The benefit went great. We raised $10,000 and a few hundred people came out,” Pham said Friday, Oct. 20. “Each year it is getting a little bit bigger.”

The Veterans Smile Day mission is to provide free dental care and support to military veterans as a small way of thanking them for their service. The hope is that in the process the veterans will find permanent dentists for themselves and their families.

PAWS Lends a Hand

ARGATE – PAWS Pet Care is helping dog owners in Atlantic and Cape May counties by providing dog walking services for your pooch if you are working late, as well as providing an opportunity for adults with disabilities.

Jewish Family Service, 607 N. Jerome Ave., started PAWS Pet Care just two years ago. Since then, the business has grown.

For some, PAWS is their first job.

For others, it is a chance to earn some money and gain confidence, knowing they are in the workforce. And for PAWS customers, they receive specialized care from trained professionals, ensuring that while they are at work or need someone to walk their dogs, their pooches are getting the best of care.

“After casino closings, we really saw a huge hole of those having difficulty getting a job. Atlantic County’s unemployment is about 14 percent,” JFS Director of Communications Beth Joseph said Friday, Oct. 20. “Getting a job is difficult, and getting a job for people with disabilities is virtually impossible.”

Joseph said JFS looked through the community to determine what might be a good fit for a business. They found hundreds of dog licenses between Ventnor and Margate alone, with that number increasing during the peak summer tourism season.

“There were just a few dog walking businesses out there, so we knew we wanted to create one of our own,” Joseph said.

What Does PAWS Offer?

“I like to say we have a little bit more, because we have pet-check technology. It is a clock in and clock out system where the dog walkers can send pictures of the dogs to the owners,” Joseph remarked.

While Margate and Ventnor are the main areas for the business, PAWS has branched out to Somers Point, Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Northfield and Ocean City.

PAWS Pet Care offers services tailored to the individual customer’s and pup’s needs. They offer multiple walks a day, companionship for the dogs for a time after their walks, even pooper scooping services. Just about the only thing they don’t provide is pet sitting.

Walks begin as early as 6:30 a.m. A 30-minute walk is $15, a 50-minute walk is $25. PAWS also combines a walk with companionship services, such as feeding, for $30. Pooper scooper services are $15 an hour.

“JFS job coaches go out to the home and make sure the dog is a good fit for the program - not aggressive, for example, and vaccinated,” Schmidt said.

PAWS staff is trained by an animal care specialist as well as by members of the Humane Society of Ocean City on spotting injury, avoiding trouble with other dogs and other issues that may come up.

There are eight dog walkers. Although the number of dogs walked frequently changes, there are currently 11.

Owners don’t need to supply anything but their dogs PAWS employees bring everything needed for the walk, from a PAWS leash to waste bags and dog treats. When the dog walkers enter the home, the owner will get an alert, photos of their dog as well as a map of paw prints detailing the walk.

Maureen Leidy of Ventnor, has been a PAWS Pet Care customer since its inception and is happy with the service.

“The PAWS service provides a GPS check-in for when the dog walker arrives at my home, and provides a check-out time. This gives me the reassurance that I know when my dog, Holly, is cared for, so I can focus at work,” Leidy said.

Leidy added that the dog walker handles her very large Newfoundland very well. “Sometimes my walker even sends me a picture of the dog when she is doing something cute,” she said.

Jessica Schmidt, JFS lead vocational coach, said the service is a success because the dogs are screened, the dog walkers are carefully selected and undergo rigorous training. It also meets

The reasons for PAWS have as much to do with helping people, as it does providing a service for dogs.

For Sherwood Oxendine, 51, of Atlantic City, a PAWS Pet Care employee, it is the beginning of his life in the workforce.

“I’ve never had the chance to work with animals before but have always wanted to. Earning my first paycheck was a goal I have had for a long time and PAWS Pet Care helped me achieve that,” Oxendine said.

Oxendine is in the JFS vocational services program for people with disabilities. Like him, people in the program are assigned a case manager and they work to create a good fit between the dog walker and the dog. People in the program range from people who have autism to some sort of mental health issue, such as a person who suffers from anxiety, Joseph, the JFS communications director, explained.

“We are employing individuals with disabilities and hope residents support this effort,” she said.

The Science in Fall Foliage

H

ere we are amid the fall season. This change of season provides the perfect temperatures for outdoor activities. As a photographer, I love driving up and down the Garden State Parkway, through the back roads and into Pinelands to watch the leaves change color. While many sections of the country are beginning to see cooler temperatures and gorgeous, brightly colored trees, our local vegetation remains lush and we have yet to see leaves falling in unison.

Photosynthesis plays a major role in the lifespan of a tree. Photosynthesis is an agent from which plants and other organisms gather much-needed sunlight and energy. It is also what gives these leaves a bright, green color during the spring and summer.

The loss of sunlight and cooler temperatures lessen the production of photosynthesis during the fall, and causes many of the leaves to change their hue. This season, we have only witnessed a slight change to date, thanks, in part, to Mother Nature.

Our region has seen very little change this fall due to higher-than-normal temperatures. A lack of steady rainfall over the past several weeks has also played a role, According to the state Division of

Parks and Forestry. Experts are predicting that the foliage will be less vivid here in South Jersey.

While many leaves are nearing their peak in northern sections of the state, our region should begin to see colors changing in the next couple of weeks.

The most common tree found throughout our region is the bald cypress. Bald cypress leaves produce a distinctive bright, orange color. Sugar maple trees are also the most bountiful, providing the distinctive “leaf shape” common throughout the Northeast. For some, it might be as close as your back yard. But the best way to see nature is up close. The Pine Barrens stretch as far north as Ocean County into sections of mainland Cape May County. Many of New Jersey’s state parks offer magnificent views of the fall colors.

If you’re up for some adventure, be sure to visit our local parks and forests, such as Wharton State Forest in nearby Hammonton. Wharton State Forest provides one of the best spots in the region to see the foliage at its peak, while visitors can spend the day hiking, fishing, or going on nature walks. You can also take a trip to Belleplain State Forest, in Woodbine.

Here, you will find up to 21,000 acres of trees, including red maple, oak and cranberry. Cape May Point State Park is another great site for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Chubby Checker Adds “Twist” to 2018 First Night Ocean City

he legendary Chubby Checker will help Ocean City celebrate New Year’s Eve with performances on the Ocean City Music Pier as part of the family-friendly 2018 First Night festivities.

Checker first performed “The Twist” on “American Bandstand” in 1960, and dancing has never been the same. The rock ’n’ roll icon has sold 250 million records and toured continuously in his career of six decades.

Checker will be part of a spectacular lineup of more than 75 shows and activities at venues throughout Ocean City during the alcohol-free celebration on Dec. 31, 2017.

Checker was born in South Carolina but grew up in Philadelphia and became a local celebrity with his impressions of Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley at Tony Anastazi’s Produce Store on South Street. The Philly boy became a star with a string of hit singles in the 1960s that included “Pony Time,” “The Mess Around,” “Limbo Rock” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Last summer, he released “Knock Down the Walls,” which made it to No. 1 on Billboard’s dance music chart.

Checker will perform shows at 9 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the Music Pier, before fireworks cap off the evening’s entertainment and welcome the year 2018.

Bonnie Brittingham, treasurer of the Egg Harbor Township Elks Lodge 2563 heard about the K9 Warriors and shared it with her fellow Elks. In response, they raised $4,500 for K9

ill Hurley is a veteran who fought in Desert Storm and battled depression for 25 years until he received his service dog through K9 Warriors.

Now Hurley is a veteran liaison for K9 Warriors and helps to match veterans with traumatic brain injuries or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with service dogs that can help them to lead a full life.

Gabriel Ruiz, of Galloway, is the Founder and CEO of K9 Warriors, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Ruiz is an Army veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury when rocket fire struck his convoy in Iraq in 2008. He lost 90 percent of the pigmentation in both of his eyes and suffers from debilitating migraines that are exacerbated by light. His service dog, Alala, can smell chemical changes in his brain prior to the onset of a migraine. She will bring him his medication and lead him to the darkest place wherever they are.

So far, K9 Warriors has matched 15 dogs to veterans. Some of the dogs are rescues from the Atlantic County Humane Society and other animal shelters. Some are donated by breeders.

Warriors and presented a check to them Saturday, Oct. 21 at a pasta dinner. Hurley, along with his service dog, accepted the check for K9 Warriors and answered questions from the Elks members, even demonstrating some commands. n entrepreneur is defined as “a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.” Since nowhere is it defined as “Achieving

great financial success.” I believe I can safely say, that is a fairly accurate characterization of myself.

My career certainly didn’t start that way. As a determined young woman, I set my course to land a position in the hospitality industry in the “Big” city. As a travel and tourism student in business school, my internship began in room reservations at the then newly opened Tropicana Casino Hotel. My journey took me steadily up the ladder of success, when I was promoted to supervisor by the age of 22 at Bally’s Park Place. During the years of raising my daughters, this area was the land of endless opportunities. I managed and opened a new motel;

spent some exciting years working at our local airport; created marketing opportunities for a signature hotel brand; coordinated events for several high-end restaurants, and ultimately, moved into wedding planning and ceremony officiating.

The course that we charter isn’t always one of our own choosing.

An unexpected diagnosis of Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease in 2011 ensured that long hours and corporate politics would not have a place in my future agenda. The combination of becoming an ‘empty nester’ and a ‘disabled retiree’ at the same time was challenging.

Years filled with Girl Scouts, softball, dance lessons and tea parties had morphed into quiet dinners and empty bedrooms. Business suits and matching heels collected dust as they hung lifeless and ignored in my closet.

Reinventing myself this time required a little more ingenuity.

While I managed my new health limitations, I took stock of my abilities, interests, knowledge and experience. The result was my own princess party and event service. ‘Little Angels Princess Events’ would be the culmination of my years of raising daughters, leading a Girl Scout Troop and planning special events.

Purchasing costumes and enlisting local talent was my biggest investment. Having those two elements in place, our first engagement in 2012 was sharing the stage alongside Shaquille O’Neal! That followed with our first high-end tea party reception that included a live Cinderella horse and carriage ride.

As the business grew with private parties and public appearances, events grew more elaborate. Soon I was including mini-productions to showcase the many talents of our diverse cast. Props and sets became part of the presentation as we headlined the annual ‘Kid A Baloo’ event for Townsquare Media, town festivals and charity fundraisers. A local tea room brought us in to have our princesses demonstrate proper dining etiquette for children,

for which they performed fun, light hearted narratives.

My creative ambitions run deep.

I’ve helped launch new businesses, built websites and recently taken on one of my biggest challenges yet! As a member of the Township of Hamilton’s Historical Society, I chaired the committee to bring the annual Ghost Walk to life!

With a window of no more than three weeks, we created a unique storytelling process that will get more elaborate as it grows from year to year. Through historical research, character portrayals and the addition of the White Raven Paranormal Society to our team, Mays Landing will soon be known for our already elaborate community events. I’m proud to announce that most recently, I’ve also joined Shore Local’s team of celebrated staff writers!

And finally, never far from my heart: In the final hours of 2012, the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum was in desperate need of securing a new home as the doors readied for closure at the Shore Mall. With just days to go, I successfully arranged a relocation at the Hamilton Mall, as well as a fundraiser to rouse the media’s attention. he first thing you will notice when you walk into Hair Dynasty of Somers Point is the cozy décor and friendly atmosphere. After you get settled in the waiting area, you will start noticing the many inspirational sayings and quotes on the walls. Some make you smile, some make you stop and think and others touch your heart.

Sue Mell, owner, has worked to make this a comfortable place for the entire family to come and get a haircut or other service. Pricing is reasonably set, based on her philosophy that people work hard for their money and should be able to afford a hair salon experience. She has owned this salon since 1982. It all started because she fell in love with the industry while playing hairdresser in her aunt’s salon as a little girl! After becoming licensed, Sue worked at several area salons. She finally settled in at Hair Dynasty in 1980 which was owned by Dominick Vignola at that time. She felt she was finally “home”. When he was ready to leave the industry in 1982, Dominick offered to sell Hair Dynasty to Sue and she jumped at the chance.

A challenge that Sue faces daily is the upkeep of her property. “It’s an older building so there’s always something to do” she says.

She advises anyone that is purchasing a property for their business to make sure to include property upkeep in their budget, along with all the other business expenses. A smart business plan is also in order. Sue’s word of warning for a wannabee salon owner: “While this is a great and rewarding industry, expect to work most weekends and have sore feet!”

Although it was scary, and her father tried to discourage her, Sue jumped in with both feet. In 1984 she moved Hair Dynasty to its current location at the corner of Bethel and Shore Roads.

Sue says the single most important thing to running a successful salon is the staff you have in place. She hires people that she can trust and who are team players.

“There are no superstars here – everyone is equal and is expected to work as hard as the next person.”

Luckily, Sue does not have a high turnover of staff. Many employees that left did so to start their own business. “I have always been blessed with employees that want to stay here. I am very flexible and allow them to set their own hours, which I think is one of the reasons. “A very important person on her staff is Johnna, her daughter. Johnna has contributed immensely to the business through her knowledge of

Jennifer Hansen, Owner of Enlightened Solutions What inspired you/led you to be a business owner/entrepreneur?

I am the 4th generation in a family business so the decision was to help my parents as they had helped me growing up. Back in 1999 about a year after coming home to work of the company I started the Hansen Foundation. I have continued to work in the area of helping addicts recover since that time which has now grown into a full multi-faceted operating business. My own struggles with addiction inspired me to do this work.

Opening all of these businesses in such a short period of time. Enlightened Cafe has been a big challenge because it is open so many hours, and I really wanted to make the food affordable, so many people could access healthy food but to buy organic food and source it in our area is not only challenging but also very expensive. We need to do more volume to make it work but I do believe it is starting to catch on. It takes constant tweaking.

We have been in business 86 years and the business went from my great grandfather, Ole Hansen, to my grandfather, Haubert (Hobie) and Uncle Walter, to my father, Roger, to me. My great grandfather came over from Norway and he was a bridge and road builder. My grandfather and father continued that business, but my grandfather has also bought a bunch of land during his time in ownership and my father started developing that land. He was a serious golf lover and started building golf courses. I have since taken the business in the area of my interest, addiction treatment and recovery.

If you could give advice to anyone wanting to start their own business, what you tell them?

Know how to budget! Marketing is key!

inda L'Erario loves her job as much today as she did 25 years ago when she first opened Lindy Hops in Galloway. " I love what I do and I have the best customers, the nicest people you could ever meet," says L'Erario.

"I've watched the kids grow up and I feel like I have an extended family.

A childhood nickname given by a cousin inspired the name Lindy Hops. The bubble gum pink decor was inspired by a 50's clock that still hangs in the shop.

Everything at Lindy Hops is homemade including all the ice cream, water ice and even the whip cream.

egardless of your education, talent or training, becoming a successful businesswoman depends on the need for your product or service. You can have all of the ingredients needed to be successful, but if no one needs or wants your product or service then you have no income. So your first step is to do market research on the industry you will be entering and determine what is in demand. Research existing businesses who offer the same or similar product or service to determine where your position will be. As a business woman since 1988, I have been thru so many ups and downs, hurdles and mountains that were so hard to climb even I thought I couldn’t make it. But that whisper from within and above told me that I could do it and to keep on trying. I went from doing an evening adult computer training program once or twice a year to owning my own state approved private vocational school with four locations. Even after all of these years, I still have not reached all of my goals, but they are all attainable. Being successful in business as a woman requires a commitment like no other, your up against strong competition. The com-

petition is not necessarily only someone who sells the same or similar product or service. It is the fact that you are a woman who is making every attempt to become successful and you are accomplishing such strides that make it look easy and so when others attempt to do the same and fail, they will become upset with you rather than themselves. You experience levels of despoilment from people who look at your success and believe that you somehow got an easy pass for going into and being successful in business, but yet you are not even driving the car it seems like in many aspects.

So what do you do, you pursue what you love, eliminate people from your life that don’t think like you, think greater than you or want to accomplish more than what they already have.

Being a successful businesswoman takes focus, determination, passion and most of all, time. Make excellence the goal in everything that you do. Be the best. If you aren’t the smartest, be the one who tries the hardest. If you aren’t the fastest, be the one that trains the longest. Surround yourself with women who are smarter and more experienced than you are. You never want to be the smartest one in the room unless it is to get the contract.

hen a sked what was Caroline Ann Ranoia’s inspiration for opening her own business, the Blue Eden owner said it was simple.

“It was something I always wanted to do since I was 5 years old. While most children had the standard lemonade stand, I walked to the corner store and purchased coloring books that were on sale and sold them on the corner of my street in a cart that had big wheels,” she said.

Along with the coloring books Caroline sold crayons.

“If you purchased both I threw in big paper-mache flowers that I made,” she said. “My best customer was my dad. I laugh every time I think of my upselling qualities.”

Caroline said her true in inspiration was her father, a man with a “never give up” attitude, her mom who never stops and her grandmother, who made her own soaps.

“We were the family that never had a bar of Dove, Dial or Irish

Owner Caroline Ann Ranoia Spring in our house,” she said. “I thought we were terribly odd, but as luck had it she taught me how to make it and I enjoyed the process and found my passion.”

A typical day for Caroline starts real early - between 4 a.m. and 4:30am.

“It’s the best time of the day for me to get up. I take my dogs for a long walk. After my walk, I get working in my soap kitchen, it’s quiet and peaceful. In the heavy summer-season, I put in 16 and 17-hour days, but it’s an adrenaline rush. I love the hectic craziness, it makes me work harder,” she said.

During the early morning hours, she can get at least 10 dozen differently scented soaps made and ready for curing. In the summer she can make at least 1200 bars of soap in a week and that’s just soap and doesn’t include all of the other products she makes. Sea Foam Soap Company by Blue Eden also makes lotions, perfumes, body sprays, organic sugar scrubs or any fill-in products that she needs for the stores.

By 9:30 a.m. Caroline is usually in the stores where she makes sure she and her employees are ready to start the day. Getting stock on the floor, ordering merchandise, supplies, paying bills, looking at sales reports, teaching employees about the products made in-house, training employees on the point of sale system and creating work schedules are some daily tasks. Then of course there are matters of shipping out web orders, running to the bank, post office, marketing on the various social media products used, as well as updating information and product on the website. She also keeps her schedule up-to-date with the various farmers markets and festivals.

Caroline also works on marketing plans, develops new products and watches trends, in between helping customers and taking care of her 86-year-old mom, her home and two favorite pups in the world, her Jack Russell Terriers - Honey and Oliver.

Reflecting on everything, she

said the most exciting part of this journey is trusting in herself and her ideas.

Her nugget of advice to anyone interested in starting a business is to find a good accountant.

She shared her 5-year-goal.

“In September I submitted a bid to a beautiful Forbes rates, 5 Star, 5 Diamond property and was just awarded the contract. It has pushed me to reach beyond my comfort zone to develop and create a more automated factory like setting to manufacture the product in larger quantities without compromising the ingredients.”

And what is even more exciting is the opportunity she will provide.

“It will employ four people, plus myself, to run everything in the off-season and will provide year-round employment in a very seasonal area,” Caroline said. “I am hoping that this is just the start and am looking forward to getting my first order out the door.”

Entrepreneurship is a lot about being creative and open to new ideas, because both businesses deal with creative events. There is always a "problem" to solve, and a new project to work on.

Tell us what your average day looks like.

I am an early-riser, so I often will be at the shop by 6 a.m. I want to make sure the flow of the day is ready, check in on things we need and look at events that are coming up. I check the accounts first thing in the morning and take some time to think! I find the more time I think about situations or events, the less reactive I am. I want to be proactive

during the day, not reactive. My day varies between website work, social media, events, supplies and forecasting six months out. I have some staff, which allows me to be able to do those things on days I am in

shop. I do all of the above, plus hang out with our guests, sweep the floors, clean the bathrooms, take out the trash, etc. All jobs are on the table.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time building your brand. Know that you are worth every penny. Sometimes as new business owners we don't feel completely confident in what we are doing. Know that you have to stand in your power and own the room - so to speak. I don't mean arrogantly, I mean with a sense of purpose and in the concept, that you are here to offer some awesome stuff to people in the community.

The Root of the Root

B

eing your own boss is a really empowering and liberating adventure. With the work I do for The Elegant Root, my content marketing business, I can set my own hours and communicate honestly with potential clients whether projects align with my mission and vision. I get to create my workspace and determine the areas in which I’m most productive, this usually results in

me working on the floor of my living room next to my bunny, Sweet Potato Pancake. I get to make all the decisions.

This also results in an extraordinary level of responsibility and accountability. If I miss a phone call or an email, if I’m unclear with the way I present my services, or if there’s a large grammatical error in a social media post I create, I answer for it. But, this also means I have the opportunity to make each of those things right, in the exact way I deem most appropriate. True strength doesn’t come from getting it right all the time. It comes from admitting when things go wrong, cleaning up the mess, and growing from it.

The other powerful fact about owning a business is that I have complete control over the way it grows and evolves. I decide to shut it down

or keep it moving. I also get to decide if I want to transform it into something completely different.

Several months ago, I wrote an article for Shore Local entitled, “Reinvent Yourself.” In that article, I mention the Buddhist parable of the raft: “There is a man who comes to a river while walking in the forest. In order to get across the river, he gathers branches and sticks and makes a raft. After he gets to the other side, he has a decision to make. Will he carry the raft with him, in anticipation of encountering another river at some point in his journey? Or will he discard

Ultimately, he leaves it behind. The raft served its purpose, but if the man continued to carry it on his back, it would only weigh him down. He had the intelligence and the skillset to make the raft in the first place. If he were to find a new river, he would certainly have the resources to make a new one, better suited to the new river.”

I founded The Elegant Root in April 2016. Since then, I’ve made mistakes, learned from them, and gathered new tools that have enabled me to recreate the business again and again. I’ve taken on new projects, succeeded in ways I never imagined, and failed a whole lot. Every experience has been instructive and valuable in its own way.

As we approach 2018, I’m excited to reinvent The Elegant Root again, in a way that will enable to blossom into its full potential.

Businesses are living things that grow in the dirt. The roots of each business lie in their mission statement, and The Elegant Root has a simple one: To help others share their stories. I come back to this statement whenever I’m uncertain about a direction to take or a turn to make. This mission is vitally important to me, and as long as my goals and vision remain connected to their source, I am confident in The Elegant Root’s ability to flourish.

The moral of this story? In business and in life, don’t be afraid to start over.

Don’t be afraid to challenge the boundaries you have set for yourself, discard anything that isn’t working, and begin creating something new.

media updates and marketing. Once at the shop my day begins with prepping the self-wash suites, stocking supplies, scheduling pro grooming appointments and assisting clients with self-wash. I am also a dog groomer and will jump in to help my staff with grooming as the needs arise. In between doggie belly rubs and lots of kisses, I order stock, tend to my retail area, clean the shop and manage the accounting end of things, including payroll, budget and expenses.

The most exciting part of this journey has been meeting so many incredible people who share my love for dogs. My clients have become family. Nothing thrills me more than to see a once timid

dog howl with excitement when they pull onto our parking lot! In addition, dog people are fun! I never have a bad day at work. Doggie hugs and kisses make your cares disappear. My shop is my “Happy Place.”

What inspired you/led you to be a business owner/entrepreneur?

I guess it stemmed from my parents being in business their whole lives together. I learned from them at an early age. Yet, my passion fell into the arts early, as well and I think combining business skills that I learned, with "arts" skills I learned, led me to the entrepreneurial path. I also got involved in a network marketing company at an early age too. that took my thinking to a whole new level. In this past decade of my life, I have tried to tie all my skills together - pushing the entrepreneurial envelope.

Tell us what your average day looks like I don't have an average day. I'm not sure many entrepreneurs or self-employed business owners do. That said, I have to make myself stay on a schedule. I have a task for each day of the week. Yes, as a self-employed business owner, this is quite flexible, however I force myself to stay on somewhat of a schedule to make it all work.

So, typically I take Mondays off.

Tuesday through Thursdays are my appointment and road days. On Wednesdays I am in the office and Friday is the day to take care of my apartment. The weekends are sort of flexible, depending on events. Of course, events take priority on any given day, yet that is pretty much the schedule I stick to. I fit my meditation and workouts around this schedule as well. When it's really hectic, I at least try to get in some walking.

and I think many entrepreneurs will say the same thing. I have learned to bite off the necessary pieces and just wait on the rest. I also find a challenge in finding the right people to work with in the company.

That is also an ongoing challenge.

When you find that someone who clicks, you need to find a way, or make one, to keep them in the vision. The people you surround yourself with must have the same vision as you. If not, you need to bless and release.

What has been the most exciting part of your journey thus far?

Having projects take life. It's crazy. Things I have been working on for several years are starting to come together at the same time.

Not sure if that is a good thing, or a bad thing, yet they are coming together, so I'm leaning on the "good thing" side. I love seeing things materialize!

Any interesting facts about your business you’d like to share?

I find all my business so interesting. It's in the arts field and I love the arts. The fact that I have experience in so many different areas, is what I enjoy putting on the table. Factually, my bags (new pocket book line) people are loving. So, getting that reinforcement, is crucial to going forward. My blog - I am so interested in making that the coolest thing.

It has grown tremendously in the last six months. I have over 52,000 readers now.

What were/are some of your biggest challenges?

arden State Academy, 600 East Moss Mill Road in Galloway, was started

by Tracey Campbell House in 2013 for her young daughters and to single-handedly raise the bar in early childhood education. Garden State Academy (GSA) is not a daycare, but rather a professional resource for parents and their children – more like a “real school for a preschool.” Little Sprouts Infant and Toddler program accepts infants as young as six weeks old through early preschool. The Preschool of the Arts and Kindergarten program is for children 3-6 years old.

Linda Pecchia partnered with Tracey House in 2016 to become a co-owner of GSA. They have worked together over the past decade, Linda being part of the “dream team” when GSA first opened.

Together they have expanded the business and just recently moved to a new location at 600 East Moss Mill Road, Galloway. They are excited to be working on a second location to begin in 2019.

Academy, therapists (Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists & Developmental Interventional Therapists) work with master teachers to provide students in the early years with every resource possible. Blossom and Bloom Therapy Preschool program is for children with a developmental delay or who need extra support to reach their goals.

The low student to teacher ratio in all programs at GSA is an asset to each individual child's learning. Education and accreditation is important for all GSA’s employees, and most teachers have a Masters in Early Education.

Tracey has been a faculty member at Montclair university (2005-2010) teaching graduate courses and also

Something else unique that Tracey and Linda incorporated into their

new location is the Campbell Family Center, named after Tracey’s parents Donald and Theresa Campbell. This center is for BOTH the children and adults of the GSA community to engage in a variety of activities and programs. Music Lessons, Yoga Classes, Stem Classes, Cooking Classes, Dance Classes, Fitness Classes, Health & Nutrition Classes/Counseling and so much more, is offered.

The family center is also available for private functions – birthday parties, club meetings, fundraising events, paint parties, corporate team building events, etc.

was born and raised in Philadelphia. I quickly became interested in the hair industry working in my cousin's salon on Bainbridge Street as a teenager. I attended Jean Madeline Cosmetology School and immediately fell in love with making people look and feel their best.

Not long after cosmetology school, I opened HeadHunters on East Passyunk Avenue and ran a successful business there for 12 years. I sold my business and moved to Ventnor 15 years ago with my husband Gino. I then had to reestablish a local clientele. Most recently I worked as a stylist and eventually managed the hair department at Esthetica Salon and Spa. In December of 2015, I decided to branch out on my own again and opened Salon Kink. I wanted a boutique salon with a city feel. I handpicked an amazing and professional team, and chose Central Square in the heart of Linwood to start my business.

I find that the most challenging part of owning a business is being a leader.

To me, that means not just advising my team in everyday situations but being able to give them direction when they need it. I think it’s important to set an example as a both stylist and a business

person. I always strive to be the kind of business owner that my team is proud to work for, and try hard to create an environment that both my employees and our clients love coming to.

The most fun part is laughing every day and enjoying what I do. I love my staff and our clients. People come to our salon because the atmosphere is very friendly and comfortable to be in. In addition, my staff provides terrific customer service, and that makes everyone that walks in feel special I

have some of the most talented stylists and assistants I've ever worked with and watching them create beautiful colors and styles.

We try to be supportive of different organizations. Right now we have our Second Annual Kink in Pink campaign for breast cancer awareness. We have a silent auction in the salon, T-shirts, pink hair extensions and bracelets. All proceeds will go to Gilda’s Club. I believe

in giving back to the communities that you live and work in, and participating in events like this helps me do so.

I have found that being a business owner means you have to be dedicated every single day, and not just during the hours you’re there. I spend a lot of time on my "days off" meeting with members of my staff or on the phone to discuss advertising, product choices and anything we can do to make our business better. I put every waking minute into my business its 24/7. I work full time behind the chair and then deal with everyday situations in my spare time which is either after work or weekends. The reward is that I love what I do and feel great when people tell me how much they love my salon.

ail Rosenthal said when she was a teen she worked at Faber's in Atlantic City for the holidays. In the summers, she worked at various retail stores on the boardwalk. She knew she loved working with people and when the opportunity came up to buy Faber’s, she purchased.

“With 30 years of experience in graphic design, I am able to utilize my talents to help customers with personalized stationary and invitations for weddings, bar/bat Mitzvah, showers, and special occasions,” Rosenthal said of her shop Joelle’s Card & Gift Boutique in Linwood.

Rosenthal’s typical day consists of a lot of work.

“Work, work, work, and more work. It is a lot more work than most people would expect, including myself. I usually start my day by making phone calls regarding orders received, broken items, backordered items, and mistakes on orders and/or invoicing,”

she explained. “Throughout the day I enjoy waiting on customers and giving them personalized service, doing my best to help them find exactly what they are looking for.”

Another part of her day consists of checking new arrivals and/or cards, pricing and putting them out on display. With that comes reorganizing displays to make everything look pleasing to the eye, and getting everything to fit.

“On occasion I meet with various sales reps looking for new products to keep my inventory fresh,” she said.

“If time allows, I work on creating orders, calling them in, and creating ads for newspapers and emails.”

But Rosenthal said she wouldn’t be able to do it all without the assistance from Lisa and Pat. The most exciting part of her journey as a business owner is easy, she said.

The customers are amazing.

Two Forgotten Public Questions on Election Ballot

e in New Jersey have important elections on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

We choose a new governor, and a state senator and both state Assembly members in each of our 40 state legislative districts. We elect several new freeholders in each of our 21 counties.

We choose mayors, council members, township committee members, and school board members in most of our cities, townships, and public school districts.

We are also voting on two important state public questions. Although we are bombarded with news and

campaign messages every day, we read and hear almost nothing about these questions.

Question No. 1 asks voters to let state government borrow another $125 million. The second question asks us to amend our New Jersey State Constitution – again!

Voting “yes” on ballot questions is usually a bad idea in New Jersey.

In other states, ordinary citizens can put public questions on the ballot by petition. In New Jersey, questions go on the ballot only if two powerful state politicians, the Senate president and Assembly speaker, agree.

Back in 1993, Republican Governor Christie Todd Whitman and Republican candidates for state Senate and Assembly promised to change that when they ran for election. However, although they forgot that promise of “initiative and referendum” right after they won election with large Republican majorities in both houses of the Legislature.

Because only the folks who control state government put public questions on the ballot in New Jersey,

I usually vote “no” on them. I am suspicious of politicians with that much money and power who want us to vote to give them even more.

Ballot Question No. 1 claims state government needs to borrow $125 million, so it could then give that money to selected local governments to build or fix up local public libraries.

We all support public libraries, but there are some devils in these details.

Under New Jersey’s politicized system of awarding public construction contracts, most money would be spent on union contractors, and nobid architects, and lawyers who help politicians get elected and re-elected.

Also, thanks to Amazon, digital books, and the internet, brick and mortar physical libraries are less important than ever before. State law already requires that a generous amount of local property taxes to be spent on public libraries. So, is the money really needed for the public? Or to pay back campaign donors?

The biggest devil is that as with credit cards, borrowed money must be paid back with interest and big Wall Street “transaction fees.” Every “yes” vote to borrow money in November, is a “yes” vote for years of tax hikes to pay back those debts.

Because of past “yes” votes (and questionable schemes that borrowed money without public votes required by state constitution), New Jersey is already up to its eyeballs in debt.

We just raised the gas 23 cents a gallon just to pay back $16 billion owed by the Transportation Trust Fund Authority. State government shut down last summer because of squabbling over how to re-pay $225 million borrowed to expand Stockton University and other colleges in 2012.

Aren’t our property, sales, and state income taxes high enough already?

A “yes” vote on Public Question No. 2 would again amend our New Jersey State Constitution. It would require all money collected by the state from environmental lawsuits to

be spent for certain environmental purposes. This again sounds like a good idea--until you look at these details.

First, 10 percent of the money would pay bureaucrats of the state’s Department of Environmental Protection for “administrative expenses.”

As a lawyer, I have seen how abusive government agencies and officials get when they get “bounties” from the fines and penalties they collect in the form of bigger budgets and salaries.

Second, we all want polluters to pay for the damage they create.

However, very little pollution is taking place these days. Most pollution stopped in the 1960s, and most environmental lawsuits are brought against unlucky owners of properties who have nothing to do with problems found there today. Most lawsuits against them now are shakedowns.

Third, most environment “cleanups” these days simply spend fortunes to move pollutants from one remote place to another.

Fourth, a constitutional amendment would force money desperately needed for other purposes to be spent where it may not be needed at all.

arents of young children, let me know if this scenario sounds familiar. Your kids won’t stop arguing, they have no interest in playing with the hundreds of toys in their play room and you feel like you might lose your mind if you don’t get them out of the house. If you can relate, you are in luck because a wonderful place opened earlier this month in Smithville called The Play House & Café, and it could just be the answer to your prayers.

Owners Justiyna Chaba and Antonia Wise became friends while working at Izakaya in the Borgata.

They are both moms of young children and came up with the idea for the Play House & Café after frequent discussions about the lack of indoor

play places for kids in this area. What inspired you to create the Puerto Rico Relief Benefit?

Well, I was speaking to one of my lifelong friends after the Hurricane and she hadn't heard from her family. Realizing how distant Puerto Rico is from the mainland, I came up with the idea to do a benefit. I know I am good at events. So, after asking via a Facebook post as a feeler and an overwhelming response, the benefit was born.

What was the response from the community?

The donations from the community for the benefit were amazing. Over 40 prepared dishes of food, over 50 silent

What was your biggest challenge with planning this event?

One of our biggest obstacles was getting through the permit process with very short notice with the city. But we have a great team at city hall and with careful and on point planning, benefits like these can be a reality in public space. Another obstacle, was directing people to Ski Beach Park, very few know where it is, even those that have lived here for years.

How did you provide entertainment?

Five bands donated their time, but we had over 40 bands jump at the chance to perform for the benefit. We had a great car show as well that featured hot rods, jeeps, a spit fire, a race car team, and even a Ferrari!

What will you do with the proceeds?

All proceeds are going to United for Puerto Rico, a 501c3 in Puerto Rico. They are directly involved in getting supplies from the mainland to Puerto Rico.

How did you feel at the end of the day?

All set and done, I was exhausted, but extremely happy throughout the day to see how many people came out, I would say just over 2,000 people arrived for the benefit. This is based on how many wrist bands were given out, one per person per donation.

What is next for you and Amazing Ventnor?

I have come to realize I love doing community events and large-scale events. I love to put smiles on people’s faces. Its daunting at times, but it’s always worth it in the end. I have come to the conclusion that I’m very good at creating events, so much that I started an event planning

October Haunts

ith autumn in full swing, this South Jersey boy is already growing excited about what ubiquitously comes with the dimmer months of the year. The summer is fine: I don’t mind the heat at all, and it’s nice having longer days and shorter nights. Even so, there’s something about being able to watch the leaves being drained of their chlorophyll, the way the chilly air pleasantly burns your lungs during a twilight-lit stroll, and the eagerness of coffee shops to inject pumpkin spice into anything they can think of that eclipses anything summertime has to offer for me.

As we steadily move closer to the end of October, some more unhallowed attractions make their way to the forefront. When I was younger, there were just three haunts in the area: Whippoorwill Campground’s haunted hayride, Birch Grove Park’s haunted hay ride in Northfield, and the infamous Brigantine Castle haunted walk. I do remember

for a few years a man who used to convert his home into a haunted walk on Maryland Avenue in Somers Point.

My mom always played a witch, my dad occasionally was Frankenstein’s monster, and I was even a mummy one year. All of these attractions would be considered light fare compared to today’s standards, but they stick in my mind as being wonderfully terrifying.

Nowadays, it is all about extreme, in-your-face terror: if a group of teens do not leave your attraction with expressions of dread perpetually strewn across their faces, you failed. Creamy Acre’s Night of Terror up in Mullica Hill is no exception. You are literally let off in the middle of a cornfield maze and have to find your way back, all the while being chased by masked maniacs with chainsaws set to full tilt boogie. This is a far cry from sticking your hand in a bowl of peeled grapes and being told they are eyeballs.

Other haunts like the now-defunct Fear Factory behind the Hamilton Mall, and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly follow the same recipe as Creamy Acres: scare the crap out of everyone by any means necessary.

But then there’s Terror in the Junkyard out in Scullville in Egg Harbor Township. I consider this one a cool medium. Simply put, it’s for everyone.

It’s a volunteer run endeavor made by the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company. Now I’ve heard mixed reviews about Terror in the Junkyard, but here’s why I like it so

much. This is run by people who are not making any profit off of it (I believe all the money goes to a charity); rather, they are doing it because they love it. They have carnival food, corny Halloween-themed music and Young Frankenstein playing on a loop as you wait in line. The junkyard utilizes discarded items that have been rotting over the years, giving it even more eerie and realistic appeal.

Everyone is friendly; everyone is fully immersed in their roles.

haunts I’ll be able to hit before the end of the month. But I do believe I’ll be able to make it out to Scullville for a funnel cake, a hayride, and perhaps some good scares. I hope to see you boils and ghouls there, as well.

Eating Healthy is Easier Than You Think

t’s as simple as it is difficult: nutrition.

Eating balanced and eating for performance. People don't eat nutrients.

They eat food. Good eating is not a punishment, but an opportunity. If you know why it's important and what to do, you'll find it enjoyable and satisfying. And if you establish an overall pattern of healthful nutrition, you'll have plenty of wiggle room to savor the treats that matter most to you.

Eat more fresh and homemade foods and fewer processed foods. Avoid fast food and junk food. You know what they are.

Choose your fats wisely. Cut down on meat, the skin of poultry, whole-fat dairy products, stick margarine, fried foods, processed snack foods, and commercial baked goods made with trans fats. Think about dressings, sauces, and cooking oil. Use olive or canola oil to cook whenever possible, and moisten your bread with olive oil or soft margarine. Get "good fats" from fish and

nuts. Choose your carbs wisely.

Cut down on simple sugars; remember that sodas, sports energy drinks, and fruit juices are loaded with sugar. So many people walk around on a sugar high the first half of the day after high sugary coffees and Danish. Cut down on highly refined products made with white flour.

Favor whole grain, coarsely ground, unrefined products. Don't be fooled by dark color bread or by labels that boast of unbleached flour, wheat grain, or multigrain flour. Instead, look for whole grain as the first ingredient, and read the fine print to learn the fiber content of a portion; more is better. Learn to like bran cereal, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

Consider fiber supplements if you can't get enough from whole foods.

It is important to consume at least three cups of non-or low-fat dairy products a day.

Eat protein in moderation. Favor fish and skinless poultry. Experiment with soy and beans as a protein source. Aim for 5½ ounces of protein-rich foods a day; count ¼ cup of cooked beans or tofu, ½ ounce of nuts or seeds, or one egg as equivalent to 1

ounce of cooked fish or cooked lean meat or poultry.

And remember to halt the salt!

Restrict your sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day, particularly if your blood pressure is borderline or high, by reducing your use of table salt and processed foods such as canned soup and juices, luncheon

meats, condiments, frozen dinners, cheese, tomato sauce, and snack foods. Men with blood pressure above 120/80 should aim for 1,500 mg a day, as should men above age 50.

Eat more potassium-rich foods, such as citrus fruits, bananas, and other fruits and vegetables. Eating more calcium-rich foods such as low-fat dairy products, broccoli, spinach, and tofu, but don't take calcium supplements to boost your daily intake above 1,200 mg.

No need to fear bread. Eat more grain products, especially whole-grain products, aiming for at least 6 ounces a day. Count one cup of dry cereal; ½ cup of cooked cereal, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta; or one slice of bread as 1 ounce. Whole grains and brown rice should provide at least half your grains; the more the better.

Eat more vegetables, especially deepgreen and yellow-orange vegetables. Aim for at least five servings a day. Count one cup of raw leafy greens, ½ cup of cooked or raw vegetables, or ½ cup of vegetable juice as one portion.

Try to eat more fruits, aiming for at least four servings a day. Count one medium-size piece of fruit; ½ cup of fresh, frozen, or canned fruit; or ½ cup of fruit juice as one portion.

Eat more fish, aiming for at least two 4-ounce servings each week. Remember to broil, bake, or grill instead of frying.

If you choose to eat red meat, try to reduce your intake to two 4-ounce servings per week. Avoid "prime" and other fatty meats, processed meats, and liver. Switch to chicken and turkey, always removing the skin. Be sure your meat and poultry are

cooked to 160 degrees or more, but not charred. Eating four fish meals a week will give you a pound of weight loss every two weeks.

Please eat eggs. Aim for an average of no more than one egg yolk per day, including those used in cooking and baking. Use egg substitutes whenever possible.

Include seeds and unsalted nuts in your diet. Nuts have been linked to a reduced risk of cardiac death, but since they are high in calories, moderation is the watchword.

Use vegetable oils in moderation, favoring olive and canola oils. Reduce your intake of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, palm oil, and coconut milk.

Okay, the big question.

What about alcohol they ask? If you choose to consume alcohol, drink sparingly. Men should not average more than two drinks per day; women one a day.

Count 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1½ ounces of liquor as one drink.

Never drive or operate machinery after drinking.

Adjust your caloric intake and exercise level to maintain a desirable body weight. If you need to reduce, aim for gradual weight loss by lowering your caloric intake and increasing your exercise level.

Avoid fad diets and extreme or unconventional nutritional schemes. If it's too good to be true, it's not true. And remember that these guidelines are intended for healthy people. People with medical problems should consult their doctors to develop individualized nutritional plans.

Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings It’s Saturday morning and your 12-year-old child says, “Mom, my friends and I are going up to Atlantic City. Can I have some money?”

They do not have cell phones. You fork over $5 and tell them to have fun.

As a 12-year-old boy, this is what I did. But it was 1962 and parents - good parents, didn’t give it a second thought.

I took the $5, some extra money I made from doing lawns, and our trio of friends took the bus up to Atlantic City. Our target were the piers, Steeplechase, Million Dollar, and we would finish up at the Steel Pier. The piers had arcades and we played a mean pinball before “The Who” made “Pinball Wizard” a cultural buzzword.

The Steel Pier is where we always ended up. Right in the front of the Steel Pier was the General Motors exhibit where aspiring drivers like us could get behind the wheel of a Cadillac, an Oldsmobile, or a Chevy, among other models.

My favorite was the Pontiac GTO with a stick shift. I stomped on the clutch and ran that poor devil through the gears so many times I have to wonder what they ever did with that vehicle. Of course, I tried the horn and radio in every vehicle, but someone had the good sense to disconnect the batteries. Another popular attraction was the diving bell. It had small round portholes, you dare not call them windows, but the water was so murky you couldn’t see six inches in

front of you.

But that was not the attraction.

It was the sudden stomach churning, G-forces from the sudden ascent which was the reason for going on the bell in the first place. We watched movies on the pier. On one occasion, I brought a cousin from England on the pier and during one of the movies, I reminded her that right below her feet was the Atlantic Ocean and if the floor gave way we would plunge into the unknown depths below. I don’t think she was paying much attention to the rest of the movie. There was also the water show at the end of the pier. We sat on stadium-like seats seemingly quite a distance from the beach and watched a choreographed performance of clowns and high divers perform for the crowd. The water show culminated with the world-famous Diving Horse plunging into a tank of water before our very eyes. All in all, it was a full day which usually ended with a Taylor Pork Roll sandwich, a Birch Beer and a bus ride home. No phone calls, no texts, no Facebook posts or Tweets and no worries.

As one of the founders of the Linwood Farmers Market, this is something that I feel very passionate about.

While I shop at the farmers markets in fall, spring and summer, I also belong to a CSA. Not familiar with what a CSA is? It stands for community supported agriculture and it is one of the best ways to support a local farm.

I must admit that one of the biggest reasons why I have a CSA share is that I love eating and cooking with ingredients that have just been harvested. Nothing beats the taste of fresh spinach or just picked tomatoes.

Every CSA is different in terms of pickup options and whether you can choose what you get. In some CSA shares, you just show up once a week, grab a bag of fruits and vegetables and then head on your way. One of the reasons why I love the CSA program at B&B Farms is because you get choices each week. For example, they may put out bins of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli and tell you to pick one or two, depending on the size share you purchased. The other reason why this CSA, is such a good fit for my family is because of the experience. You don’t just show up and grab your bag. Each week you can pick your own, depending on what they have available in the fields. It varies and includes fresh herbs, fresh flowers, green beans, tomatoes and blueberries. This is especially important for me as a mom to young children. They have so much fun coming with me each week they can’t wait to head out to the fields to pick what is available.

I feel that it is important for kids to understand where food comes from, not just from the shelves of a supermarket. B&B also offers extras each week for purchase. District 2 Hurley Analysis:

Republican Brown by Wide Margin for Senate; Democrat Mazzeo Leads Assembly Race

T

he pivotal General Election is a little more than one week away. The race for the Legislative District 2 State Senate seat between New Jersey Assemblyman Chris Brown and his Democratic challenger Colin Bell is not close.

This is despite the release of the unreliable Stockton University poll, which had the race a statistical dead heat a few weeks ago. Respected National pollster, 538's Nate Silver has rated it a "below average poll," that "leans in favor of Democrats."

This same Stockton poll had Congressman Frank LoBiondo leading then chal-

lenger William Hughes, Jr. in 2014 by just five percentage points. A few weeks later, LoBiondo won by a massive 61.5 percent to 37.3 percent. It was never close. The poll was biased then. It still is now.

Both the Republican and Democratic internal polls have always shown Brown with a sizable lead. Brown has consistently led by 15-21 points throughout the entire campaign.

Bell has run a poor campaign and he's lost the last two times he's been on the ballot (Assembly and freeholder). Bell also hasn't been the recipient of the massive campaign war chest that has routinely flowed into the 2nd District for more than a decade. This is for two reasons. First, the outside money sees Bell as a bad bet.

Second, State Senate President Steve Sweeney is facing a tough challenge from Republican Fran Grenier. The LD3 race may become the state's first-ever $20 million campaign. The New Jersey Education Association has spent more than $4 million to try and unseat Sweeney.

Brown was able to begin his campaign unfettered for more than a month, before Bell got out of the starting blocks. This

was invaluable. Brown and an independent outside group tagged Bell for forming a predatory tax lien business in the district.

It has driven Bell's negatives sky high. Bell formed the business during the Great Recession at the height of the home foreclosure crisis. Atlantic County has had the highest home foreclosure rate in America.

Bell was asking up to 18 percent interest, or, he could potentially take someone's home from them; all while asking for their vote at the same time. It has taken root as unseemly and incompatible with being qualified for elective public service.

Brown is the candidate straight from central casting. A decorated combat war hero, (2nd Lieutenant) who has earned The Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge for his honorable service in the ground offensive in Iraq.

Brown's private sector and governmental experience is extensive. He owns and operates his own law firm. He has served as a Municipal Solicitor, Judge and Prosecutor. Brown won his seat in the New Jersey Legislature in the election of 2011 and has won re-election in 2013 and 2015.

Bell served one term on the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the recipient of the wave election of 2012, when former President Barack Obama performed very well in Atlantic County.

Bell was defeated three years later in his re-election bid.

Bell works for a highly respected local law firm of Hankin, Sandman, Palladino and Weintrob. Bell's practice areas are commercial and civil litigation. He has been with the firm since 2008.

Regarding the coined "Hurley Like Ability Quotient," Brown trounces Bell in this critical category regarding the voters liking one candidate over the other.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7 every indicator points to Brown becoming the Senator-elect from Atlantic County's 2nd District.

Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, D-2, holds a commanding lead in my view for one of the two Assembly seats. Mazzeo has won a seat in the elections of 2013 and 2015. Previously, Mazzeo served as Mayor of Northfield from 2008 through 2013 and Councilman from 2003-2007.

Mazzeo is a part owner and operator of his Family's long-standing grocery store.

Despite consistently voting and working against the district (North Jersey Casino ballot question for example), Mazzeo remains both likable and popular. It defies political gravity and all common sense, but it remains true.

John Armato to victory for the second Assembly seat.

The Democrat campaign strategy has been to completely ignore Republican challenger Brenda Taube; while aggressively going after Brigantine Councilman Vince Sera. They are trying to disqualify Sera, which would leave Armato standing.

The Democrats are trying to tag Sera as a "Republican Boss." It's such a stretch, that it's laughable. However, low information voters, who have been bombarded by television and radio commercials making this charge against Sera; you never know what actually sticks during a campaign season.

Taube is a very hard-working former Margate City Commissioner. She deserves better than this campaign has offered her.

When four or more candidates are running for two seats, the election voting math is always very challenging. It typically turns into a "popularity contest" versus who is the most qualified.

Finally, the Craig Callaway factor cannot be overstated. As of Oct. 5, there was more than 6,000 vote-by-mail ballots requested. The Callaway organization has led a well-organized effort.

They have been physically transporting such a large number of voters to the Atlantic County Clerk's Office in Mays Landing, that Clerk Ed McGettigan had to institute a special procedure, whereby he has utilized the middle court room as a staging area for voters to request their mail-in ballots.

The Callaways have perfected this system and they have turned Atlantic County into an early voting "state." I predict that the Callaways’ effort will deliver a state senator, assemblyman, the mayor and three city councilman-at-large seats in Atlantic City.

Very soon, all the talking will be over, and the voters will make their will known.

e live in a very “me centered” world. There, I said it. But it’s true. Everywhere you turn you witness it. The attitude is reflected in just about every aspect of our lives; how we approach our jobs, our priorities, our time, our money, our “things.” It’s probably most evident in our social media practices. The most glaring example is “the selfie.” How do I look? What will people think?

For many, it’s all about me!

This really got me thinking when I read the epitaph on the gravestone of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Forty-five years ago, this week, Robinson died. He was only 53.

But in his short lifetime, he made a lasting impact for generations to come. Robinson truly broke the color barrier in baseball, becoming the first African-American player in the 20th century to take the field in the Major Leagues. In doing so, he paved the way for every African-American player who followed him, and he paid a personal price in the process.

What was it about Jackie Robinson that set him apart from other baseball players of his day? There was a quality to his character that attracted the attention of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey.

Rickey decided he wanted to integrate baseball and needed someone to lead the way.

He needed someone with talent, but also the temperament to handle what he knew would be a rough road. Rickey found who he needed in a second baseman who played for

Jackie Robinson opposed his presence, and threats to himself and his family. And he did it with honor, dignity, and grace.

For Jackie Robinson, it wasn’t all about him. It was about something much bigger. He saw the big picture and was willing to be a pioneer and pave the way for future ballplayers.

Robinson’s tombstone reads, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” You and I may not have the platform of Jackie Robinson, but we can work each day to take the focus off ourselves and make a concerted effort to add value to others. In doing so, we may find ourselves the odd one out, but the reward in the end will be worth it.

Path to Surfing in 2020 Olympics Runs Through Atlantic City

T

he path to surfing in the 2020 Olympics in Japan runs right through Atlantic City. Earlier this month AC was the host for the 2017 USA Surfing Prime Junior Event, an invitation-only contest that features the best under 18-year-old surfers from all over the East Coast.

The winners of the contest qualify for the USA Surfing Championships in Lower Trestles and a chance at a spot on the USA Olympic Surf team.

The AC contest draws from a huge 2,000-mile area from New York to Florida. It is one of three Prime series contests held in the region – one in New York, one in North Carolina and one in Florida.

The contest series, which is the highest level of junior surfing in the nation, will be back in Atlantic City next year.

As surfing makes its Olympic debut at the 2020 Games, the contest is an important talent pipeline for future Olympians. The four-person

Team USA is comprised of two male and two female athletes will compete against teams around the world at Tokyo’s Tsurigasaki Beach.

Shore Lo­ cal magazine caught up with USA Surfing CEO Greg Cruse just after his call with the US Olympic Committee (USOC).

We want to bring the best surfers in the area into a program where USA surfing controls the quality and prepares them to compete on the international level or as a professional. Prime Series events have the same World Surf League-certified judges, computer scoring system and announcers as professional contests.

As you look to develop the USA team and strengthen talent for the Olympics, what is your approach?

What the USOC sees in surfing and skating is a nontraditional sport that will interest kids who otherwise wouldn’t be interested in sports. We have all the regional organizations encouraging new surfers and competitors. As we grow surfing, we also need to give new athletes a clear path to excel. That’s what the Prime series does. The kids who succeed in those contests and make it on the USA team get a year of coaching and training from Joey Buran, a former Pipe Masters champion, and physical evaluation and training in our San Clemente High Performance Training Facility under Medical Director, Kevyn Dean. The top kids on the team get a chance to be on the travel team and compete internationally and eventually in the Olympics.

What should young surfers with Olympic aspirations know and do to be part of the 2020 and future USA teams? The likelihood for anyone under 16 right now might be slim for the 2020 games, but they will be prime for 2024 in Paris. And the kids just starting surfing right now could be in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Everything we do is geared toward keeping the pipeline full of talent and ready for 2024 and 2028. Young surfers should work hard and understand what it takes to get into the Prime Series. And once in the Prime Series they need to be really dedicated to their craft and serious about the sport of surfing.

What role does character and sportsmanship play in surfing for Team USA? It is a huge component that hasn’t gotten the attention that it needs. I could write a treatise on it. Surfers today get a lot at a young age – money, product, media exposure, social media. We are developing athletes in a very individual sport and unfortunately in a lot of ways, they have a sense that they have already “made it” because they look at their boxes of clothes from sponsors, advertisements and photographs in the surf media and video/social media followers.

With Olympic surfing, it’s about

sportsmanship and strength of character. These are ideals that really come out when you’re surfing as a team. It is an eye opener for the kids to experience the ethic of a team and representing something bigger – your country, your team, your family, your hometown.

Easy Ways to Make Your Media Space More Enjoyable

he holiday season is right around the corner, which makes this the perfect time to spruce up your home before entertaining friends and family. Whether your guests are coming just to watch the big game or to stay for an extended period of time, your media space will no doubt be a popular gathering spot. The American Lighting Association (ALA) suggests a few ways to enhance everyone's viewing experience.

No matter what kind of space you have, whether it's a dedicated media room, a simple TV nook or something in between, the fundamental components are comfort and appropriate lighting. For the majority of homeowners, most media-related activity takes place in a multi-use space, which means the lighting must have the flexibility to go from everyday activities to TV viewing.

"One of the primary design objectives in a media space is to create the ability to achieve multiple and varied types of experiences, and lighting provides the key element to achieve that goal," says Joe Rey-Barreau, AIA, IES, education consultant for ALA and associate professor at the University of Kentucky's School of Interior Design.

Smart dimmers Using dimmers may seem like a no-brainer, especially considering they are easy to install and highly impactful. New wireless smart dimmers simply attach to a wall or sit on a tabletop. Anderson explains that Lutron's Caséta Wireless dimmers are designed for simple, do-it-yourself installation. The inexpensive devices can be synced with a phone to control the lights, window shades and room temperature from a remote location.

"It can be inconvenient to turn each thing on and off every time you enter or leave a room," says Anderson. "With Lutron's Caséta Wireless, you can pre-set it to adjust everything at once, so that it all comes to life with one press of a button."

tell her that it will always be okay, that what she is going through today will build her character and who she will become tomorrow. I'd tell her to stop looking for the answers in "black and white," and accept that life is all shades of grey and grey is beautiful. Most of all, I would tell her that she is so loved and so worthy of love. Once she learns to love herself, the rest of the pieces will begin to make so much more sense.

What do you plan to do next?

I have several speaking engagements and book signings coming up. I am working to get my name recognized as an author and inspiration for women everywhere. As far as projects, I have a poetry book coming out soon, as well as a workbook for “Nourish.” Once those pieces are released, there will definitely be more books in the future. Right now, I am enjoying and trusting the journey, staying true to myself and my prayers, and accepting that whatever lies ahead was created just for me.
