Fall into Fun And Festivals This Autumn

I

've been out of school a long time, but still, every year as the buses begin to roll again, I feel excited for a new beginning and a new school year starting. It is the start of one of my favorite times of year. There is so much to look forward to.

I saw a meme once that sums up my feelings about September. It lists the top three best things about living down the Shore in South Jersey: September, September and September. The air and ocean are still warm, the crowds are gone, the parking is easy and every beach is a dog beach. Could anything be better?

Festivals and block parties add excitement, delicious foods and entertainment for everyone. Every weekend there is another exciting community event.

As the nights begin to get cooler, I love breaking out the hoodies and feeling a little chill in the air. Then the hayrides begin. Fun seems to be everywhere this time of year and the choices are plentiful.

One way I love to save time is to prepare meals in the crockpot. It cooks while I am out and the added bonus is that it makes my house smell delightful all day. Recipes are readily available online. Pinterest is one of my favorite places to collect new ideas. Here are a couple of my favorite crockpot recipes. Hope you like them. With so many things to look forward to, there are plenty of reasons to say so long to summer and hello to the new season.

Harvest is also upon us. The farmers markets are overflowing with succulent locally grown produce. With school starting up, schedules can become very full, especially if your child is playing fall sports.

Taco Soup:

Baked Apples:

1/2 pound of Ground Beef or Turkey, 1 can of black beans, 1 can of pinto beans 1 cup of sweet corn 1 cup of cherry tomatoes 2 cans (14 ounce) of chicken broth 1 tablespoon of cornstarch 1 packet of taco seasoning 1 10 ounce can of enchilada sauce Brown meat, drain and add to crockpot.

Add additional ingredients. Cook on high 6 hours.

6 baking apples 1/4 cup of rolled oats 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup of brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon of cloves, ground 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg 4 tablespoons of butter Core apples, combine all other ingredients with melted butter, stir and fill apple centers.

Cook on medium heat 2 hours.

A Slice of Goodness at Apple Season

F

all is upon us and that means apple harvesting time too. Here are some local places to get your juicy, healthy fruits. Whether Red Delicious, Granny Smith or Honey Crisp apples are more your taste, they are yours for the picking.

Recipes: Apple Muffins Servings: 18 muffins Ingredients 2 cups sugar (or use 1 1/2 cups for a less sweet muffin) 2 eggs 1 cup oil 1 Tablespoon vanilla 3 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 3 cups peeled , cored, diced apples (around 3 apples) Brown sugar for topping (around 1/2 cup) Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line muffin pan with paper liners.

Cream together sugar, eggs, oil, and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon (I never sift and they turn out fine). Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and mix until combined. The batter will be very thick. Add the diced apples.

Fill paper liners almost to the top, about 3/4 of the way full. Sprinkle with brown sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-24 minutes. Makes 18 muffins.

Easy Apple Butter Ingredients 5 medium apples, cored and roughly chopped 1/4 tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1.5 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. cloves

1/4 cup pure maple syrup Instructions Stir all ingredients together in a medium-sized pot. Cover and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, for 2 hours or so until apples have reduced (and your house smells like an apple-y-cinnamon-y heaven).

Remove pot from stove and let cool, uncovered, for 15 minutes or so. Puree apple mixture with an immersion blender (you could also use a regular blender or food processor, but I love the immersion blender!) until it’s smooth and buttery.

If you want to thicken your apple butter even more after you’ve pureed it, just return it to the stove over low heat and let it cook down until it’s reached your desired level of thickness. I generally cook the apple butter for an additional 30 minutes to an hour – it all depends on the apples you started with! Just keep an eye on it and tailor the process to suit your tastes.

Serve apple butter warm or let it cool and keep it in an airtight container

in the fridge for up to a week.

Baked Cinnamon Apple Crisps Ingredients: 3 apples (I use Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Honey Crisp) ground cinnamon granulated sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 200F degrees. Line two large baking sheets with silicone baking mats. Set aside.

Wash and thinly slice the apples as shown in the photos above. Spread the apple slices onto the baking pans making 1 single layer. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.

Bake for 1 hour, flip the apples over, and bake for another 1-1.5 hours. Turn the oven off and keep the apples inside as the oven cools down for 1 hour. This will help them get crunchy. Some apples may just be chewy and only slightly crunchy after 3 hours in the oven. Store apple chips at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Here are some events to help you make the most of it. â–śFAMILY NIGHT (Aug. 31): The final installment of the weekly Ocean City Boardwalk event includes live music and other entertainment every few blocks, along with special guests to go with the “Superheroes Uniteâ€? theme. 17th Annual Dean Randazzo Surf for a Cause ▶Saturday, Sept. 9th at 10 a.m.

Decatur Avenue Beach; Margate Join the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Saturday, Sept. 9 at Decatur Avenue beach in Margate a day of surfing competition and a night of celebration and camaraderie.

The contest has 11 divisions. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the fi rst, second and third place in each division. Entries are $50 per division, $15 for each additional division, and includes a ticket to the after party. Entries are free for Grom Boys, 11 years old and younger and Grom Girls, 12 years old and younger, divisions. There are also divisions for longboard and standup paddleboard.

All surfers are encouraged to fundraise their registration fee.

Anyone who raises $75 will receive a Surf It Forward hat, T-shirt and sticker. The top fundraiser in the adult and grom categories will each be awarded a custom-shaped surfboard by Brian Wynn. The second-place fundraiser will win an electric skateboard and third place will win an autographed Dean Randazzo surfboard from his personal collection.

The organization Edwards fosters through is called PACT which stands for People + Animals = Companions Together. It is the only nonprofit organization in the country providing this unique service and all of PACT's programs are free.

PACT's mission is to give peace of mind to military personnel and/ or those facing a medical crisis, by placing their pets in temporary foster homes until their owners can be reunited with them. PACT carefully screens each case to find the perfect match of foster home to foster pet.

Foster families remain in constant contact with the animals' owners and supplies regular updates that include photos, messages and videos. For many of the owners, whether they are deployed or in the hospital, they are facing stressful situations. These emails are a comfort to them and they often report it is the best part of their day. It is PACT's belief that when

Sammi and Doc are another set of Navy dogs that Jeanne Edwards fostered for People + Animals = Companions Together or PACT, along with two of her own dogs. people are fighting for their health or fighting for our country, they should not have to worry about the safety and well-being of their pets.

PACT started in 2010 when Buzz Miller of Delaware County, Pa., noticed that more and more people in the armed services were forced to surrender their pets to a shelter when they were deployed. Miller felt our nation's soldiers should not have to abandon their best friends to defend our country. He knew that it would mean a lot to the soldiers to know their animals are well and that they

will be reunited with them. It started in Buzz's home. Since then, approximately 400 pets have been placed in foster homes and reunited with their owners. PACT is now looking to expand their national infrastructure of veterinarians, trainers, kennels and volunteers. It is their goal that no beloved pets are ever unwillingly surrendered due to a temporary situation or crisis.

Edwards heard about PACT four years ago from her sister and she has been fostering ever since. Edwards is an emergency room nurse and sees a lot of stress in her day. She knows the power that animals have to alleviate that. After her shift, she looks forward to coming home to see her dogs. "They give so much love and take away all the stress of the day," says Edwards.

Edwards recently fostered Taiga and Shino, two shepherds whose owner is a nuclear technician in the Navy on the SS Harry Truman. Initially, Edwards had them six to seven months. Then they were reunited with their owner who was later deployed again. Edwards once again cared for the two dogs, this time for three to four months. Edwards shared that people often think it would be hard to have to relinquish the animal to the owner because you

There are no costs involved in fostering. The owners often have food shipped directly to the foster home and veterinarian bills are reimbursed.

Edwards is now considering fostering a three-year-old Great Dane for four months for a family with a sick child that will be living in the Ronald

McDonald House while their child receives treatment.

Edwards lives in Egg Harbor Township with her husband and her own dogs, cats and chickens. She now also screens homes to help others become matched with a foster pet.

Edwards is also a Big Sister through Big Brothers and Big Sisters. She shared that her Little Sister absolutely loves the foster animals.

Fitzpatrick’s Deli Serves Up Favorites

ne of the first restaurants I ate at after moving to the Jersey Shore six years ago was Fitzpatrick’s Deli & Steakhouse. It was in a different location at the time and I still recall that meal clearly.

As we waited for a table on a busy Sunday morning, I remember thinking that it was a good sign that the staff seemed to know all the customers indicating that it was a favorite neighborhood spot for locals.

Fast forward six years to their newer location farther down on New Road, it’s still a hometown place with upscale taste.

Fitzpatrick’s is a New York style deli run by three generations of the Hurst family. Bill Hurst opened Fitzpatrick’s in 1989 with the help of his father. His son, Bill Hurst, Jr. joined the restaurant in 2011, becoming executive chef of dinner service.

Fitzpatrick’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with daily specials. No matter what time of day you pop in, you are always guaranteed a good meal. Whenever I mention Fitzpatrick’s, people rattle off their menu favorites. I am partial to the eggs and hash browns - always cooked to perfection - for brunch. In the fall, I have a tough time resisting the pumpkin pancakes. My daughter swears by the chicken noodle soup. I always see her lifting her bowl to get out every, last drop. My son’s standard order is the grilled cheese with fries. No visit with my kids is complete without a black and white milkshake. I’ve seen waitresses carry heaping pastrami and corned beef sandwiches to other tables that all look mouth watering.

Lastly, the students delivered the check to Lisa Bellinger, the book keeper for both St Joseph's Parish and School. It is a win for all. The students are learning new skills, responsibility and taking pride in earning money for their school. The restaurants are getting the freshest and most local produce possible for their customers.

The school has newly raised funds.

Garden Karma

I

t is always fun planting a variety of different fruits and vegetables in our garden. Some of the fruits and vegetables my mother and I plant come back year after year.

Our annual plantings include asparagus,Jerusalem artichokes, blueberries, strawberries, and a handful of grapes. Our fruit trees consist of peach, plum, cherry, apricot, apple, Asian pear, yellow pear, and a couple varieties of fig trees that produce both white and purple fruit. We even have a lemon tree that we bring inside the house right before the cold returns.

We also have Greek oregano, Italian oregano, flat parsley, curly parsley, Italian mint, chocolate mint, and even peppermint. Each and every one of these herbs grow from the root and will usually regrow the following year.

Then there are some traditional fruits, vegetables, and herbs, that my mother and I like to plant each year. Herbs such as basil,in both green and purple, have to be replanted each year, along with an assortment of red and yellow tomatoes.

We enjoy planting different varieties of tomatoes, some for salads, and some used for making “sauce” or “gravy” - the great debate among some Italians. We also plant cucumbers in a variety of sizes, peppers in a multitude of colors such as yellow, red, and green, broccoli, radish, carrots, potatoes, onion, garlic, scallion, beans and zucchini. Our garden would not be complete without different types of eggplant in different shapes and sizes, long and skinny, short and fat, in several

colors, such as white, purple, or white and purple infused together.

We also have surprise plants growing in our garden each year. We have seen such plants as honeydew and watermelon sprout out of the ground, a result of sinking table scraps into the ground to feed our gardens. Sometimes, no let me be honest - always we go overboard.

Not very large, our property is like a mini-farm and packs a very powerful punch. Many ask what we are you going to do with all of it when it grows. “Well, it’s always good to grow a little extra,” I tell them. Simply put, we grow enough to eat, enough to share, and enough to store away.

Brigantine residents are surprised by all of the wonderful fruits and veggies that gardener-extraordinaire columnist Jacqueline D’Angelo grows and shares with them.

Lorenzo Pietro D’Angelo is proud of his mom’s gardening talents. He reaps the rewards of fresh and delicious tomatoes, among other yummy veggies.

Giacomina Bernardo is proud of her daughter Jaqueline’s garden. She taught her a lot of what she knows about gardening.

Nothing tastes better than fresh fruit picked off of your own tree, or fruits and vegetables harvested from soil that you nourished, or fruits and vegetables off a vine, or fruit from a bush that you yourself grew and hand-picked at the very exact time it was ready to be eaten. Not only does it always have a better taste, but you have the peace of mind of knowing where it came from and that it is all natural.

Natural always tastes better.

We grow enough to give away as well.

I have a name for it. I call it good garden Karma. It’s so nice when your neighbors, family, or friends share what they have grown with you, or when you share the

fruit of your labor with someone who comes to visit. Not only does someone leave with a big bag of fruits and vegetables, but they also leave with a big happy smile as well.

Then there’s enough to store. Although we do not want to think about the inevitable, this year’s garden is reaching its end. Cold weather is coming, and it will soon be here. August is a good time to start thinking about what we are going to do with all that we have grown.

Although some of what we grow can be eaten right away, my mother and I like to store some for the winter months.

There is no better feeling than removing a bag of frozen summer peaches out of the freezer in the dead of winter. This delicious icy fruit can be dropped into a glass of red or white wine, no need to chill, or thaw out and used as a desert topped with whip cream. All your herbs can be dried, bottled, and used for cooking.

Your cucumbers can become pickles and there’s no better tasting sauce then the one you jarred.

So, remember, most of what is grown in your garden can be canned, bottled, pickled, dried, or frozen. Depending on which fruit or vegetable you are storing depends on the process you will use.

When it’s cold and snowy outside you will feel warm and fuzzy opening something up that you stored in the summer.

Though she learned the science behind plants in school, her love for gardening began at a young learning from her mother, about growing new things, making the experience fun and exciting.

The retreat, for adults, is Sept. 28 through Oct. 1. Guests may reserve a spot until Sept. 15. The cost is $400 for the getaway, lodging is extra. Rooms start at $125 a night.

“I was looking for a centralized home to rent and found one within walking distance of the Boardwalk and Glazed Over and a short bike ride to Bay Cats,” she said. “I wanted guests to be able to park their car for the weekend and just enjoy being a part of the Ocean City downtown. We have a great downtown and Boardwalk and I wanted our guests to have access to both.”

The reason for a retreat is simple, Boyce said.

“Sometimes we just need to create some space for ourselves. Nature takes away worry and allows us to breath. Paddling through the backbays of Ocean City really does take you to another place. Yoga and meditation allows us to clear space and unclutter the mind.”

Boyce, skilled at juggling so many things in a daily packed schedule, knows the benefits of attending retreats. She hopes her retreat will be one of many annual retreats for Reset by the Sea.

CEAN CITY – Jennifer Boyce owns two businesses in Ocean City.

The mother of four and grandmother to one, who is busy round-the-clock wouldn’t seem like the type to show others how to relax. But she does. And she is great at it. She is offering a retreat for guests to enjoy a stay in the beautiful resort, enjoy yoga, kayaking and even take some art classes.

Boyce, 54, of Ocean City owns Glazed Over Studios, 704 Asbury Ave., a walk-in art studio where guest can paint their own pottery, mosaics and canvas painting. She is also the proprietor of Bay Cats, 316 Bay Ave., which offers kayak ecotours, sunset paddles, paddle board rentals and lessons.

Guests at Jennifer Boyce’s ReSet by the Sea retreat will enjoy art workshops like the one at her Ocean City businesses, Glazed Over.

Her energy and upbeat attitude is a bit contagious.

“I love, love, love, what I am doing and they say when you love what you do you never work a day in your life,” Boyce said. “I have worked in other professions but nothing has given me the joy that having these two businesses gives me daily.”

After attending many retreats, she decided to create a getaway of her own.

She created ReSet by the Sea in late Spring.

“I was googling local retreats offering art, nature and yoga and I did not find anything within a days’ drive,” Boyce said. “Since I have these two fun businesses, I decided to create a retreat that would offer all the fun stuff from both locations.”

Buddy Grover Shines A Light ever wanting to climb those 228-steps again. "Then in the back of my brain I heard my dear departed mother's voice telling me "Go do it. It's free." Since then, I've probably climbed close to 250 times," he said.

Buddy uses different tricks to help motivate him. At first he kept himself accountable by telling people he was doing it. "I didn't want to be embarrassed like the guy who joins a gym as a New Year's resolution then stops going by mid-February," he said. Next he got people to donate $1 for each time he climbed. "I raised about $1,600 for the lighthouse that year," said Buddy. Lately he's been encouraging others to climb with him. "I take photos up top and put them on Facebook to get some publicity for the lighthouse," he said Fancy equipment isn't always necessary for a great workout. In this case, just one of the oldest, tallest lighthouses in the country, affectionately known as Dear Old Abby. Exercise is one of the many great reasons to visit Absecon Lighthouse, and so is the treasure you might be lucky enough to find there.

There's a treasure at the top of Absecon Lighthouse that makes the 171 foot climb totally worthwhile.

That treasure is volunteer lighthouse keeper Buddy Grover, who in his authentic uniform looks as if he walked straight out of the lighthouse's past.

Buddy greets climbers and hands out "I Climbed" cards, with a smile bright enough to light up the small watchroom. He answers questions and shares facts with an enthusiasm that is infectious. "The Fresnel lens was shipped all the way from Paris and shines for 19.5 nautical miles," he boasts, "it's saved thousands of lives."

"I climb the lighthouse for exercise," explains Buddy, "not every day, but as often as I can. Today was the 63rd time this year, not bad for a 88 year-old guy."

birthday. "I had cake and I got to climb for free," he said, "after I wrote a small check (a tax deductible donation) as a gift for the birthday girl. I was surprised a few minutes later when I was handed a membership card and told I could climb any time I wanted for the rest of the year." Absecon Lighthouse to Host Birthday Bash for Buddy Grover

B

uddy Grover, longtime Absecon Lighthouse Keeper knows the secret to keeping young. Nearing 90-yearsold, he remarked Aug. 29, it is in the genes. And a lot of exercise – more than 200 steps twice a week, the equivalent of walking up to the 15th floor of a building.

Grover has been serving as a volunteer lighthouse keeper at the top of Absecon Lighthouse since 2009.

The Atlantic City native since the ’50s, imparts his knowledge about Atlantic City, his optimism about its future and his love of the lighthouse to all the

visitors.

He has a sense of humor and quick wit.

“All the women in the family lived into their 90’s and my father lived to be in his 80’s. I never learned to cook so I’ve been eating chicken dinners forever - so there is also a school of thought that I am preserved,” Grover joked.

What does he tell visitors to the lighthouse who may not think they can manage all the steps?

“I tell people there is a landing every 31 steps where they could read some history, catch their breath and then they will be ready for another 31 steps,” Grover, a retired Atlantic City postal carrier and Marine said.

And when it comes to the future of the resort, Grover is positive. He brings that optimism to lighthouse guests.

“I’m an optimist. I’ve been here since 1956 and have seen the city go through cycles,” he said, adding that he sees good things in Atlantic City’s future with more family activities and maybe even getting back to what it was so long ago, a family resort.

There will be a birthday celebration for Grover at the Absecon Lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. in Atlantic City, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24. Beverages, cake and live Roaring ’20s music by “Hildy & the Peptones” will make for a great time.

Grover has requested no presents, so there will be a wrapped birthday box for guests to leave a “present” for his “girlfriend” Abby (a.k.a.

Absecon Lighthouse).

And to celebrate Grover’s community spirit, Absecon Lighthouse is hosting a Facebook contest. Prizes are certificates to area restaurants

Milton Glenn, Absecon director of educational programs, has been at the lighthouse for five years and considers Grover a friend and gem for the Absecon Lighthouse visitors.

“He can honestly hold your attention for a full hour and you would never be bored with the information he is telling you,” Glenn said. “On the days that he volunteers at the top of our lighthouse, I would say when about 95 percent of the people come back down from their climb the will comment on how amazing he actually is.”

Grover, a self-described social butterfly, joked he has just two official birthday parties this year. But then again, he said, “Every day is a birthday party.”

Senior Moments A Seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

By Charles P. Eberson ecently, we have lost two young people to drug addiction. When I say â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;? I mean all of us even if you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know them personally. For the sake of the familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; privacy, I will only refer to them by the letters â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gâ&#x20AC;? for the young man and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Câ&#x20AC;? for the young woman. C passed away from a drug overdose at the incredibly young age of 22, but had been battling addiction for many years. Although I did not know her personally, I spoke with people close to me who knew her. A beautiful girl, C was also talented and creative in so many ways. She was a student in a friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pottery class, and created lovely ceramic pieces. One wonders

On the other hand, I had spent some time with G, 29 years of age, as well as his family. He was on the high school crew team with our son and anyone who is familiar with crew knows that families are traveling to

practices and regattas practically every weekend in the spring for four years. There are away meets, boat dinners and gatherings at parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; homes. G had a huge personality and during those high school years, always appeared to be laughing and happy.

The years passed and drug addiction

sank its talons deeply into Gâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life.

He fought hard, repeatedly seeking treatment with some measure of success. But, as it happens all too often, the drug won out and G died of an overdose. Surely these deaths create a void, a vacuum for families and friends who knew these people and forever changes their lives. What haunts me even more than that are the contributions to the community, to the world, that is lost. What works of art, what songs C would have sung or played that none of us will ever have the benefit of witnessing? What contributions would G have made and how much light would his illuminating personality have shed on people in his life? Perhaps they would have had children and the world would have benefited from their contributions as well. The lives lost through drug addiction eventually affect us all. For when the candle of life goes out for one of those young lives, it goes out not only for today, but for all the days to come and all the candles that may have been ignited by their one candle will never be lit. The battle against addiction is a battle we all have to wage.

ACCC’s Careme’s Restaurant to Open for Lunch

AYS LANDING—Careme’s, the student-run, gourmet restaurant at Atlantic Cape Community College’s Academy of Culinary Arts, will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The restaurant will offer an a la carte lunch menu with items including tomato escarole soup with white beans, a chef’s soup of the day, tossed garden salad, baby spinach and mushroom salad, roasted chicken shepherd’s pie, steak frites, roasted tomato macaroni and cheese, southern fried chicken sliders, pulled pork Sandwich, grilled eggplant and roasted pepper sandwich, pumpkin cheesecake, apple raisin crisp and chocolate crème brulee.

For groups, the restaurant will offer a three-course menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, prepared and served with care and attention to detail. The luncheon menu for groups is priced at $16.95 per person, plus tax and a service charge, which helps provide scholarships for academy students.

Careme’s, located at Atlantic Cape’s Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, offers a farm-to-table dining experience that’s unique in South Jersey.

How to Pack a Better School Lunch

I

f the thought of packing school lunches fills you with dread, take a deep breath. It’s not so bad.

Remember, your kids work up an appetite at school so when they open their lunch box, you want it to be filled with nourishing food they will be excited to eat. I have twins and it would be so easy if they liked the same things for lunch, but unfortunately, they don’t.

Here are some tips to help you get off on the right foot this school year when it comes to packing school lunches.

Think beyond sandwiches: While it might seem easy to pack peanut butter and jelly every single day (there are weeks when I’m guilty of this), think of other things to pack. The only thing my daughter loves more than

soup is her My Little Pony thermos. She loves soup for lunch and I love that it fills her up. If I heat up soup in the morning and pack it in the thermos, it will still be warm at lunchtime. What are her favorites? Chicken noodle and tomato basil, both of which I consider very nutritious.

Sandwiches don’t have to be on bread: Tortillas are magical in school lunches. You can roll them or fold them, making them more compact (I recently read that astronauts eat tortillas instead of bread). My kids love egg salad which I will spread in a tortilla and then slice into pinwheels. It’s a cute presentation that they love. Another great alternative to traditional bread is pita.

Don’t be wasteful:

Some of my favorite brands of reusable items are Lunchbots and Blue Avocado.

Make extra for dinner: I try to make extra from dinner so that I can easily pack it into lunch. Some examples of dinners that are great for lunch the next day are quesadillas and paninis. When I clean up from dinner I pack the leftovers for lunch which saves so much time in the morning.

School lunches don’t have to boring: Ask your kids what other kids bring that looks good to them. You may be surprised with ideas you never thought of! I would love to hear about your favorite things to pack for lunch.

Consider allergies: Pack the rainbow: The more colorful the lunch, the better. I try to balance school lunches with lots of different colors. For example, if I pack a sandwich on whole wheat

Duct Tape Regatta Sails into Port

n Sept. 10 the Port Republic Boy Scout Troop 21 will be hosting the 6th annual Port Republic Cardboard Duct Tape Boat Regatta. The event has been well attended by community members, Sea Cadets, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. People from as far as Delaware have come out to participate in the Regatta. This year we are looking to spread the word about the regatta and hope to get some participation from local scout troops.

Organizer Amy Nass said the event gets bigger and better every year and is a fun event.

This event is a great way for family, friends, groups, and organizations to design, build and race a boat and is a

wonderful activity to end the summer season, she said.

Trophies will be given to first place finishing teams of each division, as well as winners from the award categories: Most Patriotic, Best of Show, Sunk Like the Titanic, Most Sea Worthy, Best Costumes, and Most Creative. Food and concessions are available for purchase throughout the event including Homemade French fries, hotdogs, meatball subs, pretzels, and snow cones.

The cost of the registration is $10 per boat and all inquiries, questions or registrations can be requested by email on or before September 1st.

Ocean City Draws Artist To Paint

hen you picture Ocean City, what do you think of?

Many would say the sun, surf, and sand, and that’s exactly what inspires local artist Aaron Bogushefsky, or, as many know him, simply Bogy.

This local artist grew up in Ocean City, and has always loved painting. In high school, he sold his first watercolor painting to teachers and family friends.

His art class projects could be found decorating homes, even with a grade on the back.

Bogushefsky then attended the University of Delaware to pursue an art degree, then Stockton for a teaching

degree. In fact, one of Bogushefsky’s This local artist is also inspired by his most famous pieces, a panorama of the wife Samantha, and daughters Zoe and Ocean City Boardwalk, was inspired by Willow. Bogushefsky says he typically paints in the evening, where he can find college homesickness.

n the 1890's, Atlantic City offered a flume ride much like the extreme thrill rides of today. "Shooting The Chutes" was a major attraction on the boardwalk. Riders were pulled up a long incline in an open car, then were transfered to a flat-bottomed boat. The boat raced down a track to a large pool, where it bounced and skimmed across the water.

popular ride in the late 1800's was the bicycle railway. This one in 1884 was located at Mississippi and Missouri Avenues.

There were several styles of these rides located throughout Atlantic City.

tlantic City businessmen bought an old whaling ship and purposely took it on the beach at Michigan Avenue. The "stranded" boat was on exhibition for a 10 cent admission. Atlantic City authorities forced it to move after a week. It was refloated and moved to the inlet where it did little business.

Jacob Lawrence Exhibition Coming to AC

T

he Atlantic City Arts Commission will present the Jacob Lawrence Centennial Exhibition this September to commemorate the 100th birthday of the famed Atlantic Cityborn artist. The exhibit will be on display all month on the first floor of the Atlantic City Free Public Library, with a special reception scheduled on Lawrence’s birthday from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Sept. 7.

It will feature 14 pieces of Lawrence’s art – including three original lithographs and an original poster.

One of those originals – “The Builders, The Family” – was part of Lawrence’s iconic “Migration of the Negro” series, a set of 60 narrative paintings that garnered him national acclaim at the age of 23. The series focuses on the Great Migration, the multi-decade mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North that started in the 1910s.

“Lawrence’s work was incredibly important and his Migration of the Negro series made a huge impact in the art world,” said Valeria Marcus, an Atlantic City Arts Commission member who coordinated this exhibit.

“That series put him on the map and helped him secure a place among the century’s greatest artists.”

The exhibit will also showcase newspaper clippings about his life.

Also, the Arts Commission worked with Pennsylvania Avenue School staff to have some of its students create Lawrence-inspired paintings.

The students’ art will be displayed in the library’s second floor meeting room throughout September.

Lawrence was born Sept. 7, 1917, at 1522 Arctic Ave. in Atlantic City. He resided in the city before moving as a child. On a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a 16-yearold, Lawrence developed a love for tempera paints after admiring 16th century Italian paintings.

The African-American experience was seen in every thread of Lawrence’s paintings, especially his “Migration of the Negro” series. He was the first African American given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City in 1941. The collection is now held by the Phillips Collection and MOMA. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Reynolda House

This painting was part of Lawrence’s iconic “Migration of the Negro” series, a set of 60 narrative paintings the focused on the Great Migration.

Museum of American Art are among the museums with permanent collections of his work. One of his paintings also hangs in the White House Green Room.

Lawrence was named Fortune Magazine’s most influential artist of

the 20th century. He received many other accolades throughout his distinguished career, such as the Julius Rosenwald Fund fellowship, Simon Guggenheim post-service fellowship, National Institute of Arts and Letters citation grant, Ford Foundation grant, NAACP Spingarn Medal of Arts, Founder’s Day Award from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Algur H. Meadows Award for Excellence, the Washington Medal of Merit and numerous honorary degrees.

Lawrence spent parts of four decades teaching art, with his final stop coming as a tenured professor at the University of Seattle from 1971-83. He lived in Seattle until his death in 2000.

Case in point, Captain Jim Harrigan in his boat “Irish Joy 3” had the time of his life Sunday evening at the Margate Bridge. He had a huge hit which he assumed was a bass. Thirty seven minutes later after several runs, he boated the beast with the prehistoric teeth. His “striper” was a 14 pound 7 ounce twenty-eight inch long sheepshead that wolfed down his minnow.

Jim put his catch in the livewell, sped back to the dock for pictures, then released the fish so “someone else can catch this rarity!” Sportsmanship at its finest.

Havertown, Pa seems to birth some amazing anglers including our own Capt Ed Giacomucci of Margate.

This week his competition is University of Maryland student Julliette Abbonizio who caught a three and a half pound flounder on her first drift ever on the Margate Bay. Most avid angler of Absecon Island award this season goes to Harrison Gansky of Longport. He fishes nearly every day by boat, bay, ocean, beach,

bulkhead, jetties and piers. Never one to reveal the exact locale of his catch, Harrison's trophy this week is a nearly ten pound black drum on green crab.

Celebrating the marvels of warm water temperatures, Margate resident Rich Takach parked his rod in a sand spike and settled into a chair on the beach at Washington Ave. He remarked to his wife, “Man I'd like to see something hit my line and run 75 yards out.” Which of course is what happened. Rich entertained thirty onlookers reeling in the amazing cownosed ray. Admired and released, the fish was caught over the bottom of the tide well into the incoming.

The First Annual Ray Scott's Dock Sandbar Surf Derby was won by 7 year old Andrew Soloff of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Not only did Andrew fish the Derby accompanied by his Dad, he then jumped into a rental boat with the rest of his family and scored another win with thirty large blue claws. Congratulations to Andrew and thank you to his family who keep their children active in the outdoors!
