Less is The New More

From the Editor

L

ess is the new more. Less stuff, less work, less expense equals more money, more time, and more joy.

It goes against all my instincts. I was a stuff seeker most of my life. I was after an image or a lifestyle that I mistakenly thought enough stuff could give me. In my mind, bigger meant better especially when it came to the square footage of houses, Christmas trees, SUVs and parties. Somehow, I thought it signaled success. Shamefully I handed this “more is better” philosophy down to my children. My daughters

did not have one or even five Barbie dolls, but rather a hundred, with five hundred accessories each. Setting up or cleaning up could easily turn into an all-day affair.

I know now that the stuff never made me or my children happy. My husband was the one who always knew better. He was the practical one asking why we need it or if we have enough money in savings. Our kids are grown up now and the things that mattered were not the things at all.

It was the moments, conversations and time together that mattered. The stuff was just that; stuff that was cluttering up our lives, our home and our minds.

Winston Churchill once said «We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.»

Packing light, keeping our stuff to a minimum and giving as much as we can are now the principles we live by and we have never been happier. So, I suppose, less really is more.

Hometown Hero: Anna Jezycki

By Lindsay Kirkland nna Jezycki, better known as “Mrs. J� knows how to get things done. She has lived in Galloway Township with her husband Joe since 1965 and has attended nearly every Galloway Council meeting for over 50 years.

Originally from New York, Anna and Joe met in Staten Island. Joe was a butcher in the supermarket business. They moved to Atlantic County so Joe could work at the Two Guys Supermarket in Pleasantville. “That was like Walmart is today, a big deal,� Joe recalled. He went on to work for many years in the casinos and Shoprite. Currently, he is a bus aide for Atlantic County Special Services School District.

Together the Jezyckis raised a son and a daughter and are now enjoying their two grandchildren. Mrs. J believes in being involved in her community. Her resume of accomplishments is proof that the outspoken, yet always polite with a sense of humor, was the force behind the construction of the Senior Center in Galloway that opened in 2012. “They call me the gadfly,� Mrs. J said.

A gadfly is a person who interferes with the status quo, brings about change by posing novel questions and ideas to authorities. Throughout her reign as the “gadfly,� Mrs. J has kept the council and other public officials on their toes raising questions about township business ranging from new projects, to ordinances, to spending and appointments to boards and committees.

But what she said she is most proud of in her leadership role, is the one she took in getting the Jessica Lunsford Act passed in New Jersey. This New Jersey sex offender bill and similar legislation across the country, is named for nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford of Florida, who was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and buried alive by a convicted sex offender who lived nearby. “The Jessica Lunsford Act tightens up Megan’s Law,â€? explained Mrs. J. Â

When Mrs. J. found out that a Tier 3 sex offender was living only three doors down, adjacent to where the neighborhood children awaited the school bus, she knew she had to do something.

She formed CUFFS, Communities United For Family Safety. She also led a neighborhood watch that worked closely with the police, mayor and prosecutor. Governor Christie signed the Jessica Lunsford Act into law on May 15, 2014. This took the better part of a decade to get done and Mrs. J was there advocating for New Jersey’s children every step of the way.

Most recently, the Jezyckis, who are both active members of Assumption Catholic Church, hosted the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

The statue has been traveling worldwide since 1947 and is currently on a two-year journey across America to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima. The Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917.

The Jezycki’s hosted 50 people in their home many of whom were very sick, for a prayer service. “If any one person walked out of my home with a ray of hope, it was worth it,� said Mrs. J. A gadfly brings about change in his or her community and that is certainly what Mrs. J has done.

egistration Open for 108th Annual Ocean City Baby Parade Genevieve Goings and Constantine “DC” Abramson, the stars of Disney Junior’s “Choo Choo Soul,” will lead the 108th annual Ocean City Baby Parade at 5 p.m.

Aug. 10, 2017.

Registration is open to anybody who wants to participate in the parade, which features children ages 10 and under. For an online entry form and more information, visit ocnj.us/ babyparade. Participants also can sign up at the Welcome Center on the ground floor of City Hall at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue. Entry fee is $5 per child, and the registration deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday, August 8.

For more than a century, families have dressed their young children and adorned strollers, wagons and small floats in comical and fancy themes as part of the annual tradition.

Before serving as grand marshals in the parade, Choo Choo Soul will perform a show at the Ocean City Music Pier at 10:30 a.m. on the same day. ↘Continued from 8 Goings and Abramson are entering their 11th year of entertaining pre-schoolers and parents worldwide. Born from the mind of a Silicon Valley video game developer, Choo Choo Soul began as a hip-hop/soul children’s album of music that “won’t drive parents crazy.” The album caught fire and the brand was acquired by Disney and developed into a live-action television feature in 2006 that encouraged young viewers to get up and dance to their funky, urban sound. Choo Choo Soul began touring the country in 2007 and has performed for thousands of children in over 100 cities across the globe.

The parade route is from Sixth Street to 12th Street on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Bands, special guests, cars and dignitaries will travel to 14th Street. The reviewing stand will be at the Ocean City Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace.

Any bands or performing groups interested in joining the parade line up should contact Mike Hartman at mhartman@ocnj.us. We are also in need of volunteers to serve as balloon handlers for our new Martin Z. Mollusk and “Sandels” helium balloons.

We may live in a digital world, but I am still a fan of the traditional “paper� book. Call me nostalgic, call me old-fashioned, but I love the weight, feel and smell of a book. You can’t beat the experience of browsing in a library or a bookstore.

Print is not dead. In fact, regular books still account for the majority of materials being checked out at The Ocean City Free Public Library.

Studies have shown that reading in print helps with comprehension. It also helps to reduce stress, improve a person’s ability to concentrate and increases empathy. It is suggested that people do at least 30-45 minutes of daily reading away from the dis-

An Audiobook is a recording of a text being read. Their popularity has significantly increased over the last 10 years. They have been used to help teach children to read and have also been used with second-language learners and learning-disabled students. Audiobooks can be helpful to struggling readers and non-readers as well. They pull the listener in and keep their attention. Audiobooks can be extremely entertaining and make a book come alive. They are valuable tools due to their format. You can still do plenty of other things while listening to an Audiobook. Housework becomes a little bit more fun and they can

make a long drive go by a little bit faster. Imagine how pleasant driving the Schuylkill could be if you were listening to a good book. (At least it’s worth a try.)

A Playaway is a pre-recorded audio player that you use with earphones. It is the size of a deck of playing cards and only weighs about two ounces.

They can store up to 80 hours of audio. It’s amazing that you can have an entire audiobook on a device that small. A Playaway is perfect to use at the gym, riding your bike or even at the beach.

As you can see, there are many ways to “read” a book in 2017. Try something new, switch it up and find out what works best for you. Bottom line, just start reading.

Moms, Dads, Grandparents & Business Partners In the spirit of the children and families of our community, I’ve asked the museum if I could share the news of their desperate situation. As a nonprofit organization, they rely heavily on support through fundraising and a healthy weekly attendance. In the three - plus years that the museum has called Hamilton Mall home, funds have fluctuated from manageable to distressing.

Despite efforts to bring in special events and fresh exhibits, Director Matt Gilliano finds himself at a crossroads.

The mall has generously offered a bigger space-double the current sizein the Fall. Having used the reserve funds to meet monthly obligations, not only is the well ‘dry’ to finance the move, but another month of low attendance numbers will force them to close the doors - permanently. As

a mom and board member, whose children benefited immensely from years of interactions at the museum, I appreciate what they gained in their early childhood. I know many of today’s parents do as well. The clock is ticking and the outlook is grim. Your help and participation to coordinate a fundraiser, have a business or family sponsor an exhibit, host a party or event at the museum or make a tax-deductible donation is all that stands between the museum’s success or failure. Their future hinges on how the community chooses to respond to this plea. Don’t let your young children lose a special part of their childhood memories.

Business is good for the constant, onthe-go couple, who start their day in the restaurant at 8:30 a.m. and sometimes do not leave until 9 p.m. The have two grown sons, one who owns a restaurant, and the other who works with them at Athenian Garden.

For Nick Psounos, who didn’t slow down for a moment, the veteran chef said, in between making his famous spinach pie, that there is one thing that makes a restaurant owner successful: dedication.

know the old saying, ‘If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen,’” he said.

“To make it in the restaurant business you need to be consistent and give the customers fresh, homemade food with organic vegetables. That’s what we do better than grandma used to make.”

He carefully placed filo dough into a pan to make a delicious, sweet desert, Galaktoboureko, then poured in semolina custard and honey syrup. It is a favorite among customers.

For entrees, the customers just love the kebobs, Roula Psounos said. Patrons select from chicken, shrimp, lamb and pork. The skewers are served with rice pilaf and grilled vegetables. Baked eggplant also tops the list and there is an assortment of gyros.

And for the vegetarians, there are salads galore. The Greek salad has a healthy helping of Romaine lettuce, peppers, feta cheese, olives, cucumbers and tomatoes.

For a lighter salad - perfect for lunch, there is the Athenian salad made up of mixed spring greens, raisins, pine nuts, feta cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.

The prices range from appetizers $5 and up to entrees from around $10 to $20.

Summer hours are Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then it opens back up again for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and open Saturday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

What’s in A Name?

By Maria Provenzano his article is adapted from a blog post I wrote when I founded my content creation and digital marketing business, The Elegant Root. In discussing start-up business ideas with friends, I’ve learned that choosing an effective name is often a formidable roadblock. As such, I thought this was an appropriate piece to share.

The Elegant Root was not the original name for my business. Initially, it was called The Distillery.

I was really excited about the concept. “I distill your ideas and visions into the essence of what you’d like to convey.” I loved the idea, and I shared it with friends. I started creating a plan of action. I anticipated all of the beautiful and inspiring work this business would generate. In short: I built a story around it. It became an entity in my life

to which I grew attached, even before it was a real thing.

As I considered what my domain name should be (thedistillery.com was already claimed by a series of restaurants in New York), I began playing with combinations of “distillery” and “creative” and “agency.”

Then, I did something I should have done at the begin of all this brain-work: I googled “distillery creative” and discovered a whole slew of agencies that were already successfully utilizing my brilliant, perfect, totally unique idea. I was crushed. Flattened. Pancake-status. Squashed like a bug.

Back to the drawing board. Rather, the writing board. By which I mean a marble composition notebook. I made a list of words and phrases that compel me. I considered what mattered to me and what I wanted to convey. I also considered a favorite haiku by Mizuta Masahide: “Since my house burned down, I now own a better view of the rising moon.”

I was resistant to the notion of starting over. What I realized subsequently is that starting over is not the same as starting from the beginning. Starting over meant I had a Plan B, and my Plan B was a necessary byproduct of my Plan A. Since “my house burned down,” I could see what existed on the other side. I don’t believe I would have arrived at The Elegant Root if The Distillery hadn’t gone up in flames

-dramatic, but we’re working within a metaphor here.

“The Distillery” is cool. It’s modern and hip with clean edges. It evokes an image of neat people with mustaches sipping sage-infused bourbon cocktails. Ultimately, that’s not the story I want to tell.

I like dirt. I like organic things with indistinct edges that are full of nitrogen and phosphorous and potential. The roots are the life-giving part of the plant, and when we get to the foundation of what you want to create, we can discover the right words to help your seedling flourish.

This is another somewhat tangled metaphor. Roots are a living tangle. We all have stories to share and projects to create. Choosing the right words and striking an elegant balance between brevity and detail is the key to delivering the message.

This is all to say, “The Elegant Root” speaks to my aesthetic and my vision more completely than “The Distillery” ever could. And I only chose those three words and put them together in that particular combination through a reluctant, yet willingness to start over. Creation is equal parts un-creation, re-creation, frustration, inspiration, perspective shift, uncertainty, and gut understanding.

All parts are vital to the process, and it’s truly a beautiful mess. It’s about being okay with being uncertain and taking the

I am proud of myself and feeling super confident. I can set my mind to do anything.

What is your favorite part?

Meeting new friends and having fun at events I go to.

What are you interests and hobbies?

I like to surf with Heart of Surfing, I run track and play floor hockey with the Special Olympics, I attend Challenger Sports, and I belong to Pink Panthers and Lego club at school. I also like to watch YouTube on my iPad and make videos.

What has been fun for you? What has been kind of hard for you?

Being in parades and going to other pageants has been fun. It has been fun meeting new people. I have gotten to do lots of cool stuff like go to my friend Augustina Mallous’s sendoff party for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.

Sometimes having to practice my

new dance routine has been hard for me. I wanted to learn to do a cart wheel before nationals, but I have not learned to do it yet.

Tell me about how you help others.

I did lots of cool stuff this year. My parents helped me create the Happy Hearts Project to help me spread love and happiness. I hosted a valentine making party and made over 500 cards to give to nursing homes and troops in the service. I collected coloring books and crayons at Easter and donated them to AI Dupont Hospital for Children. I raised over $400 to donate to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). I also donated my time to wrap Christmas presents for Matt’s Stocking, participated in the Mike’s Seafood Polar Bear Plunge walk for Autism, made a video to promote World Down syndrome day, was a model in Shop Sell Strut for Autism, attended the Nothing Down walk, and participated in a charity basketball game to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network. Day to day, I like to help anyone that needs it.

A child’s mind is so moldable that if we break away from that model or aren’t consistent with the habit we want repeated; the child can easily drift and eventually stop doing what we want them to do.

ost of the time when we think of communicating we think of verbal communication. But actually there is another form that is just as important if not more so.

The kind of communication I’m referring to centers around modeling.

Let me explain. I’m a parent. You may be as well. Think back to when our children were infants and toddlers.

Many of you may be at that stage now. How did we get them to learn anything? Think about it. From walking to talking to having manners, to picking up toys. We teach our children by modeling what we want them to do. They watch us and it may take time, but we repeat the behavior we want or the words we want them to say and eventually if we are con-

There’s also a downside to the idea of modeling. Just as our children will model our good habits and positive traits, they will just as quickly model the notsopositive things we do and examples we set.

This principle doesn't only apply to parents, it’s the same at work and if you are any type of leader, understand that people are watching and they will model what they see.

It’s a sobering thought for sure.

Here’s an exercise we can all try.

Take a look in the mirror and ask

yourself if you are the kind of person you would want to have as a model in your own life. If the answer is yes, why? If the answer is no, why not?

It’s a great place to start.

Think about this idea of modeling in your own life and develop a daily awareness of how you’re doing as a role model for your family, friends and those you work with. Because whether you realize it or not, people are watching, taking notes and modeling what they see. Get Rolling to Chill Ice Cream Shop in OC

By Marci Lutsky rying out new ice cream shops is a tough job but someone has to do it, right? Luckily that person is me. Last week my kids and I checked out Chill Hand Rolled Ice Cream in Ocean City. We have tried hand rolled ice cream before, but this experience was

unique for many reasons. We loved it and will definitely be back.

You may have noticed hand rolled ice cream shops popping up everywhere lately and were wondering, what is this craze and where did it come from? The sweet treat originated with Thai street vendors and the craze has been spreading across the United States in recent years. Mike and Anita Conroy just opened Chill and were happy to give me the inside scoop on how it works. Mike made our ice cream while Anita explained each step of the way.

They start by pouring a liquid base onto a cold plate that is like an anti-griddle, which cooks at minus 35 degrees celsius. Chill offers five different base flavors of chocolate, coffee, green tea, mocha and vanilla. You can also choose to mix in certain ingredients like Oreos and Nutella. The base and mixins get manipulated and almost scrambled until they are spreadable on the cold slab.

Then the ice cream gets rolled into thick ribbons and placed in a cup. From there you can choose to add toppings like sprinkles and chocolate chips and finish with a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

You can completely make up your own combination or they have some you can choose from. During our visit, we chose a strawberry shortcake combination that was out-of-this-world good.

In addition to the latest sweet treat rolled chilled ice cream visitors to Chill, like the Lutsky family, get to meet the Chill penguin. Mirah and Spencer Lutsky, both age 6.

So what sets Chill apart from the competition? Mike has a culinary background and brings his creativity to Chill. They make all of their own whipped cream toppings in unique and delicious flavors. I highly recommend the cinnamon whipped cream.

Whenever possible, they use local fruits such as Jersey blueberries. They also offer a wider range of base flavors than most other places. Another reason why I like Chill is that it is locally owned. Mike and Anita are from

the Jersey Shore and know the area.

They are planning to open a second Chill location in Sea Isle next summer. In the meantime, they plan on opening a doughnut shop called Frosted a couple blocks away this summer.

Chill is located at 508 E. 8th Street in Ocean City. Summer hours are Sunday through Thursday, 2 p.m.-11 p.m. and from 2 p.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday. Next time you are in Ocean City, check out Chill. If you ask nicely, you might get a photo opportunity with the Chill penguin!

There’s So Much to Do at the Annual Atlantic County 4-H Fair

OUTH EGG HARBOR – There is always something going on during the Atlantic County 4-H Fair, and often more than one event at a time to attract the diverse interests of the public. You and your family are guaranteed a good time and lots of fun during the Atlantic County 4-H Fair, Aug 10 -12 at the David C. Wood 4-H Fairgrounds in South Egg Harbor.

While you may get the chance to pet horses, snakes, rabbits, sheep, and goats, you might miss the Twirlybirds on stage. You might watch the Performing Arts show on stage, but miss the Firefighters’ competition or Games on Horseback. You might watch a Pet Care Demonstration, but miss the Tractor Rodeo or hearing a story at the Teddy Bear Tea. You will have the chance to meet hundreds of members of the 4H family; young people with an incredible depth of knowledge about their projects and who are polite and patient when they explain the work they have done.

And what work it is. They invite you to peruse their project books – binders where they have recorded each step in words and pictures.

When their projects involve animals, members have done it all: cleaned, trained, mucked stalls, everything.

4-H youth programs connect kids to the resources of Rutgers University and the land-grant system, strengthening the next generation of scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs and problem-solvers. You can check out the Model Railroad modules, 4-H Robotics Club exhibit and demonstrations, and take part in self-directed engineering and technology activities or the Junk Drawer Robotics session to find out more about 4-H SET (science, engineering, and technology), The 4H Youth Development Program has a depth of intergenerational family participation that isn’t often found these days. The kids aren’t just dropped off and picked up at club meetings, but their families are enthusiastic, encouraging, helpful, and involved; people who are making more than projects. They are making the strong extraordinary adults of the future.

And, hopefully, they’ll help you and your families make memories.

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

By Charles P. Eberson t was the summer of 1965 when I bought my first surfboard. I was 15 and the big surfing craze had not hit yet. The purchase was the logical progression for a teen who grew up at the beach and grew tired of the inflated canvas rafts that we constantly mended with bicycle tire patch kits.

My board was a 9-foot by 8-inch log that compared to today, weighed a ton. I bought it from an Ocean City surf shop that sold, well, surfboards.

A far cry from the surf shops today that must sell everything from beachwear, footwear, eyewear, watches, sunscreen and other items to be a viable business. I bought my wax for the board at a hardware store and, in a pinch, was forced to lift a couple

There were no surf schools - no surf videos. You learned by watching other surfers and then applied the trial and error approach. Too far back on the board and you didn’t catch the wave, too far forward and you “pearled” or slid down off the nose of the board when it dove under the water. A cautionary eye periodically searched the horizon for the inevitable “clean up set” when a series of larger waves would rise up beyond the surf line and leave unsuspecting surfers struggling in the white water. There were no leashes so failing to hold onto the board was usually followed by a swim. Hopefully the board didn’t wash all the way into the shore.

Soft surfboards were not invented yet and I doubt any of the purists would have been seen dead riding one although it sure would have saved me some hard knocks.

In June of 1966 a movie came out that changed the surfing scene forever. The actors didn’t have any lines but the film was wryly narrated

The movie was “The Endless Summer” and it became the catalyst for a surf movement that continues today.

It portrayed a couple surfers traveling around the world in search of the perfect wave and the trip resonated with young surfers and would-be surfers everywhere. My two surfing

friends and I were caught up in it as well. Our surfboards were loaded into the convertible Olds Starfire with their noses wedged under the back of the front seats and the boards sticking up in the air, an iconic scene of the ’60s. We drove that way up to Atlantic City, down through Ventnor,

Margate, Longport and even ventured as far as Ocean City. We knew we weren’t world travelling surfers and we knew this was the best we could do. I didn’t go home for days. Our accommodation was the basement of my friend’s house in Ventnor. It was dark and dank with a curious smell.

Today it would probably be a prime candidate for a mold remediation team. If I could duplicate the rather complex aroma of a combination of coconut, salt water and mildew I might have a chance on Shark Tank.

I believe that once you are a surfer, you are always a surfer. Even while sitting on the beach or riding my bike on the boardwalk, I am checking out the surf and carving imaginary turns on the face of a wave. An early morning or early evening drive through local shore towns will reveal working-class surfers pulling boards out of their roofing, landscaping, contracting trucks, etc. to grab a few waves in an effort to maintain some balance in their lives. It has been a few years since I was on my board and I keep thinking I am just a day away from dragging it out of the garage and going for a paddle.

Sizzling Beach Games and Toys This Summer

By Maddy Vitale o, if you aren’t the type to lounge out on a beach chair, read a good book and listen to the waves lap upon the shore, there are a lot of other fun things to do that still get you onto the sands and enjoying what the Jersey Shore has to offer.

And for all of you sports enthusiasts a good game of spike ball or KanJam, two of the top beach games this summer, could satisfy your craving for a good with the beach in place of the court, according to Richard King, of Pessano’s Variety on Atlantic Avenue in Ocean City.

Here’s how to play spike ball.

trampoline net. One player spikes the ball down – and like in volley ball, there’s a backup player with the object of keeping the ball in play. You could pass the ball to a teammate or away from the other team. Points are awarded when the ball hits the ground.

And this is what you need to know to play KanJam. Two or more people can play the flying disc game. All you need is the frisbee and two cans. The object of the game is to score points by throwing and deflecting the disc and hitting or getting it in the goal or “Kan.” The game ends when a team scores exactly 21 points, according to Wikepedia.org.

And if beach games aren’t your thing, check out some sizzling beach toys this season.

“Surfer Dudes,” also called water boomerangs, tops the list and is a fun game for kids, you just toss the mini-surfboard into the ocean and it stays upright. A wave brings it back.

Don’t forget about the Waboba Ball. It’s a ball that not only floats, but bounces, skips and skims across the water to make taking a dip in the water a whole lot more fun.

When you’re thinking of sitting out a day at the beach with friends or family to head to the gym or hop on your Smartphone or tablet to play games, think again, and get out there and join in on some beach fun.

Believe me, you won’t be bored, and you definitely won’t end the day feeling like you lazed the day away on the beach. You might get one of the best workouts ever.

Build the Pipeline

By Seth Grossman fter years of debate, South Jersey Gas still can’t build a vitally needed pipeline through the shortest, cheapest, and safest route. This is yet another example of how dysfunctional government in New Jersey has become. Once again, the main culprits are aggressive “progressive” Democrats and cowardly Republicans.

We need cheap, plentiful, and reliable energy to enjoy safe, comfortable, and civilized lives. When humans had nothing but sun, wind, wood, and farm animals for energy, we were helpless against cold, storms, heat, and lack of rain that often made life miserable, and caused hunger and death by destroying crops and food supplies.

Natural gas is the cheapest, safest, and most abundant source of energy in America right now. The biggest supply is in eastern Pennsylvania, just over one hundred miles away. We desperately need that energy here in South Jersey.

Our biggest sources of jobs and income are tourists and gamblers.

Neither can exist without cheap, abundant, and reliable electricity to power air conditioning and electric lights and amusements in the summers. New Jersey now has the third highest electric bills in America, and high electric bills were a major factor in causing several Atlantic City casinos to close during the past ten years.

More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Romans build aqueducts to bring water in from mountains hundreds of miles away. Why shouldn’t we build a much shorter and less intrusive underground pipeline to bring in needed natural gas?

For the past 50 years, our schools, colleges, media, and Hollywood pop culture have saturated us with the idea that every source of energy we need to be safe and comfortable is “unsustainable” and bad for the planet. First, they convinced us that scarce natural gas was the only clean and green fuel available. They convinced us that nuclear power was too dangerous, coal was too dirty, and oil was bad because spills killed birds, and it caused us to get into wars in the Middle East.

Most of the arguments are nonsense. Nuclear power plants in America, including Salem and Oyster Creek, have proven to be remarkably safe. New methods of burning coal and oil have given Americans the cleanest air and water in the world.

Carbon dioxide, the gas we exhale when we breathe, is not a poison. Green

plants can’t live without it. Climate has been changing for billions of years. Every lump of Pennsylvania coal has images of tropical plants that once lived there.

Boulders and beach sand all over New Jersey are evidence of ice sheets that covered our state just 10,000 year ago.

The latest arguments against a natural gas pipeline to Pennsylvania are even more ridiculous. They say a natural gas pipeline might leak and poison water in the Pinelands. However, any third-grader understands that if a gas pipeline leaks, the gas escapes into the air, it does not mix with water.

Another argument is that a natural gas pipeline might cause forest fires in the Pinelands. Most South Jersey residents know that it would be pretty hard for a gas pipeline underneath a paved road to start a fire. If so, we would not have so many gas pipelines under the paved streets of almost every town in South Jersey. We also know that there are major fires caused by lightening in the Pinelands every few years anyway, which is why they were known as the Pine Barrens for so many years.

The more we hear these fake arguments, we must understand that more and more, the issues raised by environmentalists have nothing to do with the environment. However, they have everything about advancing a “progressive” political agenda. The key to advancing that agenda is making more and more Americans poor, divided, and angry at each other.

The talehas been told ad nauseam, even making an appearance on an episode of the The X-Files in the nineties.And just as famous as JD is the domain in which he dwells: the Pine Barrens. With 1,100,000 acres of protected forest, it is no wonder a mythical creature would inevitably choose the Barrens as its stomping ground.

The Pine Barrens’ mythology is actually quite vast. The Jersey Devil aside, lesser known legends have popped up in books by local historians (and issues of Weird NJ) throughout the years. Whether it is Captain Kid, the Golden Haired Girl or Black Dog, there are enough eerie characters in

the cannon to commandeer a whole season of Myth Busters. It is a blinding example of how important story and, even more specifically, the oral tradition has been to our species, shortly after we developed the ability to communicate through spoken words around 100,000 years ago.

But what happens when the lands where these stories originate from become threatened? The Pine Barrens make a very special case. A person can visit the ancient lands of Rome, Greece, and Egypt and dwell in manmade structures like the Parthenon and the Egyptian pyramids. The

Pine Barrens, on the other hand, are not manmade and are very susceptible to anthropogenic hazard. Take, for example, the natural gas pipeline approved by the New Jersey Pinelands Commission. This most recent act of environmental malpractice has really shown how subjective a word like “protected” can be.

The pipeline is an ominous precedent for future endeavors, and it puts our natural world at risk. Not only will the land and the wildlife suffer, but so will the legends that have been carefully cultivated for so long. Sure, if the Pine Barrens were to disappear

tomorrow, the Jersey Devil’s ugly mug can still be seen in books and through a Google search, but where’s the fun in that?

Infrastructure has always played an important role in the Barrens and rightfully so: all the way back to when bog iron was being mined from the streams. But we have to respect the land that we are taking from, also. Pipelines are dangerous – we saw this in the Gulf of Mexico back 2010. Imagine something like that happening here, how horrifying it would be. It is too close for comfort.

So, this summer, when you are sitting around the campfire, making s’mores, and trying to out scare your friends with tales of the Jersey Devil or the Blue Hole, keep in mind that all of these stories came from one place and that place is being threatened out of existence. What’s more terrifying than that?

Meet Melodyy

M

elody is sweet, petite and ready to meet. She's about 2 years old and is a black and white domestic short haired cat. Melody was dropped off in a feral cat colony while she was pregnant.

Someone probably didn't want the burden of having to deal with kittens and thought she would at least get fed at the colony. Sadly, domestic cats don't do well in feral cat colonies. Melody was afraid and stressed and gave birth prematurely. All her kittens died within 24 hours.

The caretaker of the colony temporarily housed her until she was spayed and vaccinated. Unable to find a home, Melody was brought back to the colony. She was extremely intimidated by the other cats and was not thriving in her current living situation. Desperate to get a home, melody would follow any human that came around and kept wandering further away from the colony. This was a danger to her safety.

The HSOC was finally contacted for help and we took her in when we had space. Here, she awaits her forever home.

Toys For Kids Remembers Roxanne

By Lindsay Kirkland tlantic County Toys for Kids Programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service dog and mascot, Roxanne, passed away on July 19 at 12 years of the age. Owner, Danielle Demers noticed at an early age that Roxanne, a Rottweiler, had a gentle and lovable temperament. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kids just loved her.

She was a big teddy bear,â&#x20AC;? said Greg DiPiano, founder and president of the Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program. Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program began 31 years ago in DiPianoâ&#x20AC;şs living room where he would recruit volunteers to clean up old toys to hand out to those in need at the holidays. It is now a 501c3 nonprofit organization that distributes thousands of new toys at the holidays and supports the community through year-round events.

Roxanne was a big part of the organization and participated in all facets, attending nearly all events including giving out gifts to families in need, visiting nursing homes and preschools, Atlantic City Police Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pizza with a Cop program, National Night Out and handing water out on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Roxanne especially shined with the children. She loved being with kids,â&#x20AC;? said Demers.Â

Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14, 2012, Roxanne traveled to Newtown Connecticut to assist for eight days. While there, Roxanne took on the role of a therapy dog, consoling the families and reducing very high levels of anxiety in the schools and community.

arbara and Rick McGuire of Brigantine work very hard to make their garden beautiful and it shows with an unbelievable crop of tasty, beautiful veggies.

“We are having an amazing season this year in our farm meets beach gar-

den,” Barbara McGuire said recently.

She said it looks like a bumper crop of not just tomatoes and cucumbers but squash, peppers, beans, watermelon cantaloupe and lots of herbs.

“Our wildflower garden is also growing like crazy,” she said.

he easiest, and fastest, way to lower your golf score is to improve your putting. Three putting will happen, but if a player can eliminate four three-putted greens per round, he or she will improve by, at least, four shots. And if a player can sink one or two more one putts per round, he or she can lower the score even more. It makes sense then to practice putting as much as you can.

One drill which can benefit any player looking to improve their putting, and lower their score, is to putt to a small target like a coin. To improve speed control and aim, place a quarter, or a bottle cap, on the practice putting surface and putt to the coin or cap as if it were the hole.

Putting to a smaller target will make putting to the hole, which is a

lot bigger than a quarter or a bottle cap, seem easier when you move back to putting to the hole. It’s a case of practicing something that’s more difficult than the real thing making the real thing not as tough as it was or once seemed.

It’s like how soccer players will, to improve their juggling skills, juggle a small soccer ball the size of a softball, or a hacky sack, to develop, or fine tune their foot skills and eye-foot coordination and balance. After a while, this makes juggling with a regulation, or full-sized soccer ball a lot easier, and the same thing works in golf with putting to a coin or bottle cap instead of to, or at, the hole. Start small and develop a feel for putting.

When you’re riding a cruiser bike, you’re not in a hurry. The easy and laidback cruiser bike will transport you to a simpler time. A time when you didn’t have a care in the world and could just enjoy the simplicity and freedom of the wind in your hair and the sun on your face as you pedaled around.

Cruiser bikes, with their balloon tires, upright riding position, and simple design, have been around since the early 1930s. Schwinn designed the first cruiser as an affordable alternative to the more expensive sport bicycles on the market at that time. These first cruisers were heavy-duty workhorses, incorporating steel frames and sturdy, wide tires. These features allowed the bike to handle more wearand-tear than their competitors. Americans, still reeling from the Great Depression, soon adopted the cruiser as an affordable and preferred way to get around.

easy to ride, and by the 1950s, cruiser reached the height of popularity.

Other manufacturers quickly jumped on the cruiser bandwagon, each offering more creative and unique designs to woo new buyers. From cowboy-themed cruisers to models that included faux gas tanks and headlights, there was a cruiser suited to every personality and taste.

With such popularity, it didn’t take long for cruiser bikes to become an

integral part of the beach scene. Because cruisers are easy to ride and their fat tires excel on flat terrain and sand, they quickly became popular in vacation destinations as an inexpensive and fun alternative to a car.

Downbeach Surf Camp Starts With a Splash

In the camp’s first week July 17, 14 surfers worked with nine instructors on wave selection, popping up, improving takeoffs and turns, duck dives, snaps, fitness, balance and more. Surfers’ abilities ranged from true beginners to veterans of the local contest circuit.

The conditions couldn’t have been better for the start of Absecon Island’s newest surf camp: 2-feet high clean waves, 75-degree water and July’s best 80-degree days.

Carey, the camp photographer has taken surf pictures all over the world, and captured it all. She took more than 900 pictures on the first day of camp and uploaded 215 to Downbeach Surf Camp’s Facebook page for surfers and their parents to see and share with friends and family.

Carey of Linwood, works to capture the unbridled stoke on young surfers’ faces when they catch their first ride, nail a difficult maneuver and just enjoy good waves with friends and siblings.

“What I love most about surf photography is just the range of emo-

tions you can capture when someone is surfing: happiness, contentment, wonder, excitement, fear, accomplishment,” Carey said. “The expressions and body language tell me so much about their experience out there.”

Carey said surf photography for her started as a way to not only see her son Seamus when he was out surfing, but also to feel more connected to his experience.

“I can think of one photo in particular from probably five years ago and the greatest expression on his face,” Carey said. When I asked him about what he was feeling at that moment, his response was, “that’s the best feeling in the world, Mom. That is stoke!””

While it is not unusual to have a high surface temperature in these extremely hot weather conditions, it is rare to have an entire bay bathtub. Extreme temperature requires extreme measures to keep live bait flipping even during a short fishing trip, adding ice cubes and changing their water often.

Warm water brings peanut bunker in droves, a tasty snack for all the bay's predators. Captain Ed Giacomucci of Margate was in 30 feet of water when peanut bunker schooled the surface.

What followed was a “once in a lifetime” happening. A large flounder swam to the surface and right through the school chasing dinner. So much for the theory that summer flounder lay on the bottom waiting for something to drop into their mouths.

The sheer numbers of flounder being caught by anglers is unbelievable with reports of 100 throwbacks to one keeper. Dante Foreman of Margate, Eilene Erdman of Ventnor and the Guttmann family of Pittsburgh shared similar ratios and tons of action to nab dinner. Skip Van Lew and son Rob of Downingtown threw back 140 flounder to yield two keepers. No one is complaining however since the heavy action is constant with no one getting skunked!

he Ocean City Surfing Association’s (OCSA) 2017 contest series wrapped up July 24 with nearly 60 boys and girls participating.

The groms competed in choppy conditions, with an occasional chest to head high wave coming through Ocean City’s 7th Street surf beach. Each grom accumulated points for each of the three contests held every Monday night in July. Trophies were awarded to the top six finalists in each division.

The OCSA series sponsored by the Ocean City Recreation Department is one of the longest-running surf events in the country, getting its start in 1964.

The contests are run by Heritage Surf & Sport and the Eastern Surfing Association.
