Inclusive Beats Exclusive Sometimes an “exclusive” can seem like a good thing. Whether it’s an exclusive sale, vacation, or restaurant deal, the word “exclusive” creates a false sense of importance. If I’m special enough to get this exclusive deal, I’m “in” while others are “out.” An exclusive is the adult version of the middle school clique - deceptively attractive, but ultimately isolating and potentially harmful.

I challenge you to embrace an inclusive mindset toward a person or group that needs accommodations or assistance. I promise this will give you an even greater sense of joy than those you are including.

olphins were circling, music was playing, and smiles were ear-to-ear on the faces of the special needs surfers. This past Saturday, the Margate Fire Department, Margate Beach Patrol, Longport Beach Patrol and Team Surfdog teamed up with Heart of Surfing to create a spectacular day for families with special needs. The support and love offered by the volunteers was amazing. They made each participant feel like a million bucks.

What surprised me was that this event created an equal amount of joy for each volunteer, firefighter, lifeguard, and city official in attendance. When we lift others and do whatever it takes to create an inclusive community, everyone rises together.

Hometown Hero: Donald Kravitz

By Lindsay Kirkland ’ve been very fortunate. I have a wonderful life,” said Donald Kravitz, a longtime resident of Ocean City.

Kravitz is legendary for his photography skills. He is a photographer for Getty Images, the largest supplier of photos in the world. Kravitz has been taking stellar quality photos of Miss America and Miss New Jersey since the early 1990’s and Philadelphia sports teams.

He primarily photographs headline entertainment performing in this area.

Through Getty Images, Kravitz’s photos are distributed around the world. He has had exclusive access and photographed nearly every entertainment icon one can imagine. Most recently, Kravitz photographed Pink at the Atlantic City Beach Concert on July 12. He has received a number of personal thank you notes from many of the entertainers he has photographed.

A highlight in Kravitz’s career was while vacationing in France with his wife he was recognized for his work by the curator of Louve Museum where the Mona Lisa is exhibited and he was permitted to enter the gated area to photograph the world-famous painting.

When Kravitz is not behind the lens of his camera, he can be found with his wife, Carol. Together they have five children and 12 grandchildren ages 4-16.

They now enjoy spending a lot of time traveling to visit them.

Shore to Open New Center for Outpatient Rehab

OMERS POINT - Shore Medical Center announced July 18 the grand opening of a new location for its Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation which will provide patients with a more convenient location for outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation; physical, occupational and speech therapies; and balance assessments. These services are moving from the fourth floor of the medical center to the Tomlinson Building, 710 Centre Street, Somers Point.

The center officially opens July 31.

Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. with additional hours planned for Saturdays.

Patients and other community members are invited to tour the new facility at an open house and ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22. The event will feature heart-healthy refreshments and an opportunity to meet the rehabilitation teams.

The new center offers convenient parking just a short walk from the entrance in a fully renovated facility that includes state of the art exercise equipment and private spaces for consultation, while continuing to provide an expert team of professionals that patients expect at Shore Medical Center.

Shore President and CEO Ron Johnson says the move aligns with Shore Medical Center’s status as New Jersey’s only Planetree-Designated Patient-Centered Care Hospital.

“As a Planetree organization, the patient experience drives our decision-making here at Shore. This new Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation is one great example of that.

Saturday (July 22, 2017).

The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provides a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. This year, a fireworks display returns to cap off the bayfront festivities at the conclusion of the parade.

Gloria Gaynor joins the Ocean City Pops for a concert at 8 p.m. Sunday (July 23) at the Music Pier to round out the weekend of entertainment. RENTON – The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife is accepting registrations for a new program designed to teach outdoor skills to people of all ages, particularly women and families.

The New Jersey Outdoors Program offers an engaging and exciting way for beginners to boost their confidence in pursuing outdoor activities and is equally suitable for anyone looking to improve their existing skills or enhance their appreciation of the outdoors. Registrants may choose from a series of workshops that include fishing, shooting sports, hunting, wildlife watching, kayaking and hiking. They will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere by experts in their fields.

This program blends the Division of Fish and Wildlife’s successful Becoming an Outdoors Woman program offered in the past into the Outdoor Women of New Jersey and Outdoor Families of New Jersey workshops.

“This new program is a logical advancement, broadening our outreach and giving participants a chance to build a lifelong appreciation for the state’s abundant natural resources that they can share with their families,” said Division of Fish and Wildlife Director Larry Herrighty. “With the diverse offering of classes available this summer and fall, there is something for just about everyone.”

Workshops include the Sedge Island Sampler in August. Located off Ocean County’s Island Beach State Park in Barnegat Bay, the Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center offers a unique setting to learn about New Jersey’s ecologically diverse coastal environments. Participants will be able to try fishing, crabbing and clamming. They can also try their hand at writing a nature journal, paddling a kayak, and searching for diamondback terrapins, New Jersey’s only saltmarsh turtle species.

In September, free fishing, birding and outdoor survival skills workshops will be offered at the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery in Warren County. Participants will learn about freshwater fishing, birding, and basics of outdoor survival skills. Guided tours of the hatchery’s fish-production building will also be offered.

In early December, an overnight waterfowl hunt will be held at Sedge Island to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to hunt waterfowl.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey from 2011 estimated that 2.4 million people – including residents and nonresidents – participated in

“We are very excited about offering this program, which will provide a supportive environment for participants to learn about the many types of exciting opportunities that await them in New Jersey’s great outdoors,” said program coordinator and Division of Fish and Wildlife senior biologist Michelle Smith.

The New Jersey Outdoors Program is cosponsored by the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance and the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs.

Reservations for workshops are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Many programs are free, while some have nominal fees to defray costs. Minimum age requirements may apply to certain workshops.

Egg Harbor Township allowed their bars to remain open 24-hours a day, and some of them did, especially those near Somers Point, where the bars were forced to stop serving at 2am and close by 3am.

Brownies Lodge, a rustic log cabin in Bargaintown was probably the rst to become popular with the post-Somers Point crowd, and many old timers recall driving out there to continue the party after Somers Point had closed.

The owners of Bay Shores of Somers Point built the most notorious of the late night clubs – The Dunes. It was located on the bay on Longport Blvd. where the roads from Somers Point and Ocean City came together. The Dunes was later renovated into a sports bar by the Suttor family from Margate, who also owned, at one time – the Sailsh Café and Roberts in Margate, the Point Pub and the Owl Tree in Northeld. No traces of the building remain on the lot located across from Dog Beach.

Renamed Garden Pier in AC to Open Soon PierAC Seeking to Draw Locals

by Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein, will be opening later this summer as a locals-focused entertainment venue with live music and an outdoor bar area. In the shadow of the still-shuttered mega-casino Revel and not far from Blatstein’s Showboat hotel, the newly renamed PierAC plans to draw Atlantic County residents with a reward-card program and drink specials – plus entertainment.

“We see Atlantic City on the verge of turning around,” said Rob Erickson, a managing partner of Jersey Boyz Productions, which is leasing the pier from Blatstein. How will that turnaround happen? “It’s placing more emphasis on

entertainment, drawing people down here,” Erickson added.

events expertise to PierAC, with ideas for themed parties and other entertainment this year. There are plans to add a sports bar to the pier, as well as two restaurants at a later date, Erickson said.

The pier is overlooked by the former Revel, just north along the Boardwalk from Blatstein’s Showboat hotel. Erickson hopes that by opening this year, PierAC will be well established by the time the nearby Taj Mahal casino reopens as a Hard Rock casino next year.

They have plans for occasional fall and winter events that will extend the pier’s season this year, before the restaurants are built.

Erickson hails from Phoenix and now lives in Clark, New Jersey, but he is a fan of Atlantic City and the PierAC site in particular. “This is a great opportunity. You’re not going to find this view anyplace else,” he said, gesturing to the ocean. PierAC has already teamed up with the Atlantic City Surf School on the beach just south of the pier, he added.

To draw locals, PierAC will be com-

petitive on pricing and plans to offer Atlantic County residents a rewards card. There will also be daily drink specials, including a plan for a service industry day-drinking deal on Mondays (three members of the Jersey Boyz Productions team were former law enforcement officials).

PierAC’s open is pending city inspections and permits, but Erickson said his experience so far with Atlantic City officials has been a good one. “The city has been very receptive to everything we’ve done,” he said. “They’ve been really helpful with everything that we’re doing here and at Bader Field.”

Blatstein’s team reached out to Jersey Boyz Productions about the pier in the winter, and they received their land-use permit from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority more than a month ago, but they have been keeping plans quiet until they had details locked down, Erickson said. “We didn’t want to be projecting dates and then extending opening,” he said.

They always ask me because they know I will say yes. Do you feel like the herbs in your garden are growing faster than you can use them? If so, here are some suggestions to help you use that bounty.

Have you ever tried infused water?

Yes, it’s a thing and it’s so refreshing in summer. Add mint and cucumber to ice water. It’s perfect for hot days. If you want to make some grownup cocktails, nothing beats fresh mint in mojitos.

Fresh herbs can make a dish pop with flavor. Sometimes I think I’m in the minority for my love of cilantro, but in my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to add flavor to enchiladas, rice or fajitas. Parsley is another herb that I use frequently. One

If you can’t keep up with your herbs, drying and freezing them is a great way to enjoy them all winter. Tie some string around a bunch of herbs and hang them upside down until they have dried. You will be thankful for those dried herbs in January when you make a big pot of soup.

hat do you know this week that you didn’t know this time last week? You may think that’s a strange question. But I want you to camp on that thought for an extra minute? The reason I ask that question is because each day we live, we are ‘becoming.’ Becoming what you ask? We are either becoming better versions of ourselves or lesser versions of ourselves.

The great motivational speaker and teacher Charles “Tremendous” Jones said, “You and l will be the same person in five years as we are today except for the people we meet and the books we read.”

In other words, every day we have the opportunity to take steps to learn and grow; personally, and

professionally. The primary ways we are able to do this are through the books we read and the people who cross our paths.

How many books have you bought and placed on the shelf? You don’t learn and grow by osmosis. You have to take action, crack open the books and read. Maybe you’re not a reader. Then join an audio book club and listen in the car, on the treadmill or working around the house. The point

this season of life and who are you intentionally pouring into? The answer to these two questions will have a great impact on the you that you are becoming. It’s been said that we are the sum total of the five people we spend the most time with. So, what does that say about you?

So, if like me you want to become a better version of you this coming week, here’s your homework. Pick up a book, either on your shelf already, or one someone has recommended that can help you in this journey. Crack it open and start to soak in what it has to offer. Secondly, be intentional about the people you allow to pour into your life and those you can add value to as well. Now go get ’em this week.

NJ Dept of Agriculture Projects Large Peach Crop

RENTON – The New Jersey Department of Agriculture reported recently that it projects its peach crop to be one of its largest in years.

“New Jersey’s crop of peaches are shaping up and will be available in abundance throughout the state,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher. “We want produce retailers and buyers as well as consumers of Jersey Fresh produce to know that we anticipate having a plentiful supply of peaches.”

New Jersey is one of the nation’s top growers of peaches. In 2015, farmers grew 42.2 million pounds of peaches on 4,700 acres valued at $27.6 million. The 2017 peach crop is projected to produce between 55 and 60 million pounds of peaches on 5,500 acres, according to the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council.

“The New Jersey Peach crop is looking strong and healthy for all varieties within the fruit set,” said Francisco Allende, the general manager of Sunny Valley International, Inc., in Glassboro. “We expect this to be one of our better harvests in recent years.”

The beginning of peach season is expected to start in South Jersey in about week and will gradually work its way northward. The first peach variety of New Jersey’s season is the Sentry. The crop then moves into the Gala and Flavorcrest varieties and finishes with the Loring and Red Haven varieties followed by the John Boy season. New Jersey then

moves into the Crest Haven variety season, which also includes the Gloria variety of peach, followed by Jersey Queen and Fayette varieties.

The Encore and Laurol varieties will wrap up the season sometime in mid- to late-September, when the last of New Jersey’s peaches should be picked. White peaches are expected to begin shipping around the end of July and continue through mid-September.

“We are excited with the way our peaches look right now,” said Santo Maccherone, a peach grower who owns Circle M Farms in Salem, N.J. “Our crop has come along nicely and we have high expectations for quantity and quality.”

To find Jersey Fresh peaches, search for farmers markets, pickyour-own farms and roadside markets on the Jersey Fresh website at www.jerseyfresh.nj.gov. A halfcup sliced fresh peaches is just 30 calories and provides 10 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C. Ripe peaches should be stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for up to five days. Rinse peaches in cool water and dry before eating.

Night In Venice is a Weekend of Fun

CEAN CITY – The Night in Venice in Ocean City is a huge success and a lot of fun for families every year in the city with this weekend’s activities are no different.

The theme this year is “Rockin’ Through the Decades,” and with all of the activities planned, the biggest debacle may be what to do.

The Night in Venice boat parade will start at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 22. The boat parade begins near the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and travels along the bayside to Tennessee Avenue, looping in and out of lagoons along the way. The parade route does not include Snug Harbor or Glen Cove. And the parade is free to watch everywhere except the Bayside Center.

Anyone with a boat or house along the bayfront parade route can participate by decorating their boat or home.

To view the parade, grandstands will be set up at street ends along the bay from Battersea Road to 16th Street and at Tennessee Avenue. These are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Streets include: Battersea Rd., North Street, First Street,

In addition to watching the parade, there are plenty of activities for the kids to do, from crafts and games to face painting.

The Grand Marshal this year is Alfonso Ribeiro. The new host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” Ribeiro has a career spanning three decades as an actor, director, dancer and Broadway star. A limited number of tickets are on sale for a meet-and-greet with Ribeiro from 11 a.m. to noon July 22 on the Ocean City Music Pier.

Night in Venice also will celebrate its “Rockin’ Through the Decades” theme this year with concerts by O-Town with Ryan Cabrera and Gloria Gaynor. The two concerts will fit the theme with 1970s icon Gloria Gaynor joining Ocean City Pops on Sunday, July 23 and 2000s boy-band idols O-Town teaming up with Cabrera on Friday July 21.

The Music Pier will be set up for a dance concert for the O-Town and Cabrera show. Tickets are $15 also are on sale for a “meet and greet” with O-Town and Cabrera noon to 1 p.m.

Fans can bring one thing to autograph and take a photo with their own device.

The stars also will participate in the Night in Venice boat parade. After the parade, the band will resume playing and will continue until the fireworks start at approximately 9 p.m.

To end the night, a fireworks display will be launched after the parade from a barge in the bay north of the Ninth Street Bridge, roughly off Third Street.

The display should be best viewed from street ends or the bayfront between the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and 16th Street.

Several areas are available for parking. A free parking and shuttle service will run starting at 4 p.m.

• Ocean City Municipal Airport: 25th Street and Bay Avenue • Soccer Field at Tennessee Avenue: Off Shelter Road • Ocean City Community Center: 1735 Simpson Avenue Shuttles will drop off spectators at street ends where they can watch the parade and return them to the parking lots afterward. The shuttle also drops off at the Bayside Center. The service is free and will be available until 11 p.m.

Parking restrictions begin at midnight Friday (July 21) through midnight Saturday (July 22) for the following locations: • Both sides of Bay Avenue between 16th Street and 24th Street • The east side of Bay Avenue between 14th Street and 16th Street.

• West 16th Street, West 17th Street and West 18th Street will have parking restrictions in place.

Spectators have plenty of choices of where they want to get the best view during the 2017 Night in Venice.

Spectators may watch from the Ninth Street Bridge, but there are restrictions.

All pedestrians and bicyclists should use the bike path and stay to the south side shoulder for viewing. No one is allowed to bring chairs to watch on the bridge. No blocking of the bike path will be permitted, nor will alcoholic beverages. And people will not be permitted to walk along the bridge with motor vehicle traffic. Ocean City Police will be present monitoring the bridge while the parade is in progress for assistance.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

Not as it pertains to “a right or benefit specified especially by law

or contract,” as defined in the Webster dictionary, but by people who believe they are deserving of certain rights or privileges that far outstrip their station in life. They exercise these rights without fear or concern of any judgment. I am not talking about what happens on the news or on a world level, but what I see going on in my immediate surroundings.

Somehow, one who is raised in an environment of overabundance with no sweat equity spent on their part to arrive at this lofty position, can wield their influence and disrupt some of the lives around them with no more

concern that swatting a mosquito off their arm. Often, they are in a position for which they have no experience and never would have entered into such an enterprise if they had their own skin in the game. Still, this feeling of entitlement seems to give them the confidence that some people falsely interpret as competence.

These minions will remain loyal until they no longer have any use or until the truth is laid bare.

I have witnessed similar behavior in the workplace where power is achieved not by wealth or even competence but simply by a title, be it supervisor, manager, foreman etc. Incompetence is masked through deceit, lies and efforts to place the blame for their mistakes on others.

Policies can change from day to day depending on the supervisor’s needs to maintain their power and influence.

Somehow, a line worker’s word does not carry the same weight as a supervisor’s. Line workers get a com-

pletely subjective evaluation by their supervisors. In these evaluations, the supervisor can be vindictive and use them to intimidate their staff who only get a token opportunity to rebuke any potential damaging comments on their record. In a sales environment, revenue goals and compensation become a cost control tool instead of a motivation and reward program. Some of these people have been shuffled from one institution to another with glowing reviews in order to cut the cancer from its host. Others are even promoted to replace a vacuum created by those who have crumbled under the pressure or have been let go because they have failed to rise or sink, depending on your perspective, to a level expected by their supervisors.

It is my hope that nature’s checks and balances will in some way intervene to neutralize some of this entitlement behavior. But in the meantime, perhaps we all can shed some light where it is applicable.

Tropicana Casino Announces Acquisition of The Chelsea Hotel

TLANTIC CITY, NJ — Tropicana Entertainment Inc. announced July 6 that its subsidiary, Tropicana Atlantic City Corp., has acquired The Chelsea Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Company plans to integrate The Chelsea Hotel, which is located directly across Morris Avenue from Tropicana Atlantic City, into Tropicana Atlantic City’s existing operations as “The Chelsea Tower at Tropicana Atlantic City”, and expects to open The Chelsea Tower in August 2017. Christmas in July.

That’s how I roll. Or should I say, that’s how I rolled. Now it’s how I limp.

Since this month, I’ve become “homebound” due to an injury - if you read my last column, I fell outside my back steps here at my house and now I am sporting a Velcro boot.

I have always loved Christmas.

Always.

December or July.

Just a fan.

Period.

I am one of those annoying people at the store checking out the great after Christmas bargains and yes, I watch the Christmas in July Hallmark Channel tear jerkers that miraculously always have a happy ending.

Since I am stuck in the house - no driving yet, my two girls are also stuck with me - yes, their mother.

They are your typical South Jersey kids.

They were born and are being raised here.

They are beach, boardwalk, sand, and surf all the way.

Especially my oldest, Audrey.

The more daylight and sun the better.

She is a very good eye roller when I carry on about Christmas and the such. She does however, love me a lot when she needs me for, bug bite itch cream or if there’s a fly in the house. Which is about every 2.5 seconds it seems. I always have my handy mom must-haves at the ready for itches, sunburn and scrapes.

Since I am “stuck in the house” this apparently has become my new role of sorts.

Have I mentioned how much I hate bugs?

Sorry to offend.

Yes, I am a vegetarian.

Let me get that off my jolly-weight-bearing-as-tolerated-self.

It still doesn’t change my mind about bugs.

I despise them.

I have heard all the rhetoric.

All the do-good for the earth, they kill this species for that species theories. I have heard what the mother insect goes through for her offspring and everything else that Animal Planet will show in super slow-motion and super gross up close.

But let’s make a deal. You don’t hate me for loving Christmas in July and I won’t hate you for loving bugs and/or being ‘that person’ who lets them go ‘free’ from your

house – you know that bug is coming right back in right?

In any event. My purple dollar store fly swatter and I have become BFF’s, not by choice. It’s a complete arranged marriage. A set-up. Forced. But if I want to make it out of summer alive I will do what I am supposed to here. What amazes me is how insanely fast these flies are. They’re literally lined up at the door waiting to get in the house. I am pretty sure I see them in pop-tents, chairs and the such like they’re waiting for concerts tickets. The door isn’t even cracked open and they’re in like the running of the bulls.

Samantha Gill and her children love all things summer – just not the bugs. Mom always has a First Aid kit nearby to remedy bites, sunburn, a fly swatter and other preparations for the aspects of summer that aren’t so pleasant.

Then I start getting direction from my kids who suddenly feel that everything must cease until the bugs are dead.

July is so fly.

Really.

I was hoping to prop the ankle up and cry over some George Bailey “every time a bell rings an angel gets it wings,” classic It’s a Wonderful Life.

Instead, I have my ankle propped up in the kitchen facing the back door watching kids, with purple swatter and battle star fly-Attica.

I am writing a letter to Santa.

Mom’s Vibe is asking for an early fall and winter with less flies That would be so fly.

Sam is a Mom of 2 girls, 8 and 6. Her 6 year old with special needs has a service dog. Her 8 yr old loves street hockey, they both love to surf and do karate.

Sam hopes to take a nap someday. For now the whole tribe resides loudly in Northfield.

It happened a world away, in Siberia to a young girl who was a fitness trainer and had always planned to move to America.

Eight surgeries, 20 days in the Intensive Care Unit and a 2 ½ month stay in the hospital, Hrvatin checked out of the hospital in a wheelchair. She faced five more surgeries that first year, and a mountain of physical therapy ahead, just to gain the most basic level of mobility, Hrvatin known as Laz, is a fighter.

Even though her right leg is two centimeters shorter than the other, and there is titanium in her back, she regained peak physical fitness once again.

She also achieved her lifelong dream of moving to America.

She lives in Linwood.

Her hard work and determination has paid off. She was

recently promoted to director of FITx Training at the Northfield Island Gym location.

Laz understands adversity because she has been up against the odds herself. Her mission is to help others become a healthier and stronger version of themselves. “When you come to FITx, no matter what the reason, whether you are overweight, underweight or have a difficult personal situation, you will have our support,” she said.

Singer Kelli Clarkson sang, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

That rings true in Hrvatin’s case. Not only has she survived, but she has thrived.

She is the picture of strength, both inside and out and is an inspiration to all.

Lake Lenape, Fun for the Family Right in Your Backyard

But if you ponder a bit more, you may find a great place with activities that will keep the kids happy for hours, not put a strain on your wallet and get everyone outside for some healthy, outdoor fun.

The Dragon Boat Festival may fill the waters with boats and a friendly competition, but afterward, the serene, beautiful lake is there for people to just enjoy.

And then there were cool games set up including a horse-shoe like competition and even Tug of War. Some people simply stood around basking in the sunshine and warm breezes to listed to tunes, while others snacked at picnic tables watching the boats.

While many of those attractions would be gone after the festival was over, others would remain, those that help make Lake Lenape so special, a slice of nature tucked in Mays Landing for residents from all over to enjoy.

Jon Shaffer was multi-tasking with his children Grace, 3, Jameson, 5, and Madison, 8, in tow while mom, Carrie Shaffer was out on the water. The Galloway family didn’t miss a beat of fun from the playground to walking down by the water to tasting some treats.

This was the first the Shaffers took the family to Lake Lenape.

They are sure to come again.

“There are lots of things to do,” Madison said. “You get to play with other kids and you get to play on the playground and go down to the water to watch mom.”

Jon Shaffer said it is definitely easy to keep the active trio amused because of all the lake has to offer families.

“It’s a very good area for family,” he said, before heading they headed over to see mom.

Jen Dutton, of Galloway brought her very happy, usually shy, as she described, 3-year-old son Hunter to the lake to watch family in the Dragon Boat Festival. Hunter could not sit still for a moment. Mom hurried to keep up with him, especially when he spotted a bright yellow ball. He took it in his hands, bounced it, giggled and ran around.

“He is having so much fun,” she said.

“We definitely will come back. He just loves it here so much.”

Erin and Wes Yakopcic, of Upper Township brought their 1 ½ year- old-son Max for a day of fun. While Erin Yakopcic was in the races for AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, husband Wes spent the day keeping Max busy. Which, he said, wasn’t hard to do.

Little Max spent some of his time practicing his swing with a plastic bat and ball.

“I think it’s great here,” Wes Yakopcic said. “We have been playing all day, walking down by the water, going on the playground. There is so much to do.”

A lot of events are held at Lake Lenape year-round, where families enjoy some entertainment, fun and vendors as well as the beauty of nature. and an abundance of activities. The Atlantic County Division of Parks and Recreation operates the park which is open from 7:30 a.m. until dusk.

Lake Lenape Park East, 753 Park Road in Mays Landing has fishing, picnic tables, pavilions, rest rooms, softball, volley ball and a playground. The park entrance for the west side of the lake is at 6303 Harding Highway in Mays Landing. It offers mountain biking, boating access, camping, kayak/canoe access, Cross-county Skiing, hiking and areas for picnics and of course, the scenic views, according to atlantic-county.org.

While peace and tranquility are two

words that may not come to mind about the lake during very busy events, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, held Saturday, July 15, the waters, sand, activities and beauty make it an attraction for family fun.

During a successful and packed 2nd Annual Gilda’s Club South Jersey Dragon Boat Festival, families cheered on their loved ones and meandered the many vendors that sold treats from hotdogs to French fries and ice cream. EHT Dog Park to Have its Day Atlantic County Brigantine Dog Park 42nd Street. Plenty of amenities keep owners and dogs happy. There is a registration fee to use the park and a limit of two dogs per person. All dogs must be licensed and immunized. Park hours are 8 a.m. to dusk.

Cape May County Ocean City Dog Park, 45th Street The Dog Park is a fenced-in, off-leash recreation area for dogs to play and exercise in a clean, safe and secure environment. Cape May County residents pay a fee of: $30 yearly, non-residents $40 yearly and visitors pay $10. The park has three separate areas: one for large dogs, one for small and a dog run. Park hours are daily from 8 a.m. to dusk.

For eight years the mother of two, had to overcome hurdles, opposition from the township and spent many hours in between her full-time job searching for places that would make the perfect dog park.

Countless fundraisers, tours of successful dog parks, including the ones in Ocean City and Brigantine and a real grass roots effort by Burns, chairwoman of The Friends of the EHT Dog Park Volunteer Committee, and others to get the word out that there is a need and a definite want.

Not only for the pooches who could socialize and run in a safe environment, but also a good way for people to meet each other and really bring a community together.

“What kept me going were all the people who wanted it, the people who were counting on it, the people who wouldn’t let me give up,” Burns said.

The committee leases land now from the township for $1 a year. An acre-tract soon to be the dog park is located on Swift Drive across the street from the Egg Harbor Township branch of the Atlantic County Library System.

A soft opening is planned for the fall when the vacant land, with runs and fencing minus the furry pals, will become a playground for many a romping pooch. While the park is a work in progress – it is designed similarly to the successful ones in the area with a separate space for

large dogs and small dogs and a run in between for speedy Greyhounds and other dog athletes who love to run.

“The journey has been very frustrating and very rewarding,” Burns acknowledged about the many steps it took to get to this point. “There are so many dog lovers who want their dogs to run safely off leash. Soon they will be able to do just that.”

The EHT Dog Park will be the township’s first official off-leash dog park. For more information visit ehtdogpark.com.

Egg Harbor Township has had a push for a dog park that was eight years in the making. But with work of many volunteers, plans are to open the park on Swift Avenue in the fall. dog park committee will continue to fundraise to pay for amenities at the dog park, including receptacles, landscaping, an agility course, water fountains, and anything else needed.

Yearly fees to bring your pooch to the park will be about $40, which will go toward maintenance and insurance costs and any other needs. All pooches must have proof of rabies and be licensed. Dog park members will use a key fab to enter the park, which will be open from dawn to dusk, Burns said.

“It’s wonderful for dogs. It socializes them and it makes them better pets - more adaptable. They also get a lot more exercise,” Burns said.

Burns got the idea from Ocean City, which has had a successful dog park for years. She used to take her dogs there to run but it was a 13-mile one way trek from her Egg Harbor Township house.

Back then, fundraising wasn’t a huge priority for Burns. The concept for a dog park was there – just not the land.

Fencing is up for two separate areas for large and small pooches and a run in the middle for pups to let off steam.

Getting Unstuck

By Maria Provenzano t’s simple. It doesn’t take very long at all, either.

It’s simple, but not easy. When I teach yoga, I find it helpful to focus on that distinction. When we’re asked to stay in a challenging position for more than a few breaths, it starts to feel hard. Suddenly, everything is awful.

The teacher is sadistic. The struggle story enters our brain space with the force of a thousand angry suns and we can’t fathom why we ever thought it was a good idea to come here in the first place.

But if we allow ourselves to be uncomfortable for long enough, we may just grant ourselves the space to shift our perspective. The story can change to: “Yes, the posture is challenging, but I am also strong. I’m not actually being tortured. I’m feeling my body working. I am alive, I am here, and I am powerful.”

I

Simple is not the same as easy, and hard is not the same as challenging.

Hard is a story we create when the going gets tough. Challenging is a vital pit stop on the road toward growth.

Calling something a story doesn’t make it fake. We have very strong imaginations and the capacity to convince ourselves of pretty much anything. Unfortunately, we tend to use our creative forces for evil more often than we use them for good. When we hit a bump in the road, it’s easier to think, “I’m not good enough, this is all wrong, I never should have started,” than it is to take a deep breath, reassess our position, and seek an alternative route.

I feel stuck when something doesn’t happen the way I planned or intended, or when something ends up posing a greater challenge than I thought. When I am required to step beyond the warm fuzzy edges of my comfort zone, I bristle like a hedgehog. I let myself sit in my mud puddle of desolation and gloom and sing a “Whoa Is Me” tune, unaccompanied, with a single spotlight shining down from above.

When we need to get out of our own way, the most powerful tool we have at our disposal is perspective. It’s hard to gain perspective when our shorts and shoes are full of mud, and that’s

where friends come in. If you’re feeling downtrodden and defeated, when the stuff has become too stuffy, when it’s all just too hard, seek a second opinion.

We are powerful storytellers, but we are often extremely unreliable narrators of our own lives. Call on a friend to deliver the reality check you need to move forward. Find someone you love and trust and sit down for a genuine, heart-to-heart conversation. It can be tempting to fester in our lonely bubbles of despair, but we’ll never grow that way.

I’ll close with something important.

There is a dangerous falsehood floating around that suggests something like this: If someone writes about a particular topic and has the audacity to share it with others, they have somehow made it to the other side of their dilemma.

This is untrue. I am, in fact, writing this from a place of superior stuckness,

still in the mud, but working my way out. Writing this article has helped.

Long talks with my fiancé and friends has helped. Their kindness, and your kindness, is helping me work my way through to the other side. When we experience hardships, we are never in them alone, in spite of our best efforts.

We’re all broken some of the time, and there is power and beauty in that fact. It leaves space for growth and connection.

As Leonard Cohen famously crooned, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”

By Nick Leonetti y current passion is genes. Well, maybe I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a passion; they are fascinating little buggers, though. Science was never a subject I excelled in. One of my biggest regrets in high school was not applying myself more in biology and chemistry.

There is a silver lining here, however; I’m learning all this stuff now at 32, which, I’d like to think keeps that childhood wonder alive and well in me.

It is a struggle, regardless. Being a layman and delving into the highly complex world of genetics, astrophysics, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and quantum mechanics, can be mentally exhausting.

By the way, I refer to myself as a layman because where there is an inkling of scientific ability, there is absolutely no mathematical prowess.

But this isn’t about math; it’s about science, specifically genes. My interest in the subject comes directly from a book by Richard Dawkins called The Selfish Gene. Dawkins is one of my favorite intellectuals. I decided this summer would be a good time to read it. It is taking me a while to get through: the complexity is there, no matter how much he dumbs it down for people like me. It is difficult just wrapping my mind around the idea that bodies are mere survival machines, specifically for one reason and one reason only; to sustain and pass on genes from one body to another.

Dawkins introduces the reader to rival genes - alleles, replicas, generation distance, and evolutionary stable strategy. He does a fine job at breaking all these esoteric subjects down, but they are nonetheless making my head spin at this very moment.

I must say my favorite parts of the book are the vignettes he has on animals. Learning that whales, for example, will hold whale calves above water in order for the calf who is too weak, to reach the surface to breathe, is a beautiful example of genetic altruism. A creepier example he gives is that of the digger wasp. This insect digs a hole in the ground, hunts down and paralyzes prey - usually a grasshopper with its stinger, and places it in her burrow. After the wasp has done this four or five times, it lays its egg on top of the pile. If this isn’t macabre-sounding enough, it is even more disturbing to know that the grasshoppers aren’t dead; rather paralyzed, so when the egg hatches and the babies feed it. This is an example of genetic survival at its most gruesome.

Dawkins is a master at making the inner-workings of the world accessible to us all. I look forward to reading all his books (The Extended Phenotype and The Blind Watchmaker are next on my list). His works are just a few examples of how everything that makes up this planet, no matter how small, plays a part and follows some inherent algorithm in order to survive.

he USGA’s 2017 United States Women’s Open returned to New Jersey last week and was contested at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey, but it’s long and illustrious, and rich, rich history has some deep roots in South Jersey.

The prestigious National Championship was hosted a record three times at historic Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield.

The very first course ever to host three US Women’s Opens, Atlantic City C.C. had the US Women’s champion crowned on its legendary links in 1948, 1965 and 1975. Sandra Golf Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez in 1975 giving it her best swing.

Palmer and Carol Mann won the 1975 and 1965 championpionship, was won by golfing icon, ships, respectively, while the 1948 Olympic legend, and World Golf Hall Open, the third US Women’s Chamof Famer, Babe Didrickson Zaharias.

Babe would win two more US Opens in 1950 and 1954, but her victory at Atlantic City Country Club was her, and the course’s, first US Open title. Zaharias won 48 professional tournaments in all and helped to establish the LPGA Tour in 1950. Fellow Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, then only an amateur, and only 18 years of age, finished 2nd to Sandra Palmer in the 1975 Championship at ACCC. Lopez won 52 professional tournaments in her storied career, winning 48 tournaments on the LPGA Tour with three of those wins at the Women’s PGA Championship.

'Dawn Patrol' Surfing Can Start a Fantastic Day

By Bill Barlow n Ocean City at first light, all waves are hypothetical, while my pillow remains palpably, reliably true. Its folds, its subtle combination of yielding and resilience seem far more welcoming than the night before, but in the end, I prove a faithless companion.

I

Early morning surfing often yields the best waves, with only surfers, fishermen and a few dog walkers up that early to enjoy the serenity.

I get up.

The preparation takes place in a pre-coffee haze: boards on the car, remember to strap them on or it will be a short trip. You make bleary decisions on wetsuits or

vests and whether it’s time to wax, and then on to the beach for dawn patrol.

The phrase invokes the daring flyers trotting through the early mist to their waiting Sopwith bi-

planes to roar off to danger and adventure, but I suspect surfers picked it up from Snoopy’s World War I Flying Ace invoking the same scene. Anyway, with the rolling sun up at about 5:45 a.m. this time of year, dawn patrol is probably a misnomer. In the fall, fitting in a pre-work surf will often mean getting up in the dark, hitting the water in twilight, and catching the first splash of light as the sun bursts over the horizon. In July, it’s instead shining through low clouds by the time we reach the beach, and we paddle out in full daylight.

We don’t quite have the beach to ourselves. Fishermen get up crazy early, and those guys probably were out on the beach in the dark. There are a few folks surreptitiously running their dogs, but still, things are very quiet on the beach and in the water.

There are a few reasons to paddle out this early. That quiet is one. Another is that the waves are sometimes at their best very early, when there is often a breeze off the land to groom and hold them up before they break. Later in the day, when the lifeguards come on duty to look after everybody, most beaches are closed to surfing.

Those that are open, especially guarded beaches set aside for surfers, can get packed. For the pathologically crowd-averse surfer, getting up early can mean a few rides without a lineup, and almost no chance of running into anyone.

And then there’s work.

On busy summer days, an hour in the water can get you a few rides, and cast a nice echo through

your day, while still leaving enough time to get in by 8 a.m., after a shower and a hurried breakfast.

Plus, you feel a little like an explorer when you wade in to an empty ocean, pushing through the inside line of breaking waves into the clear green water. There’s often a spray of minnows as you climb that first roller before you find your spot on the outside. Unless you are in one of the very popular breaks, chances are you and your companion are the only human beings in the water for as far as you can see.

Osprey and dolphin, also after fish, are also up early, and without the midday crowds, they often hunt in the break, which can mean some pretty spectacular sightings.

The backlit humps of the waves cast a shadow as they are about the break. You paddle, maybe you even miss one, but soon you feel the wave pick up your board, moving it without your help, and you’re on your feet, turning into the clear water, alone and alive and flying low on a foam and fiberglass magic carpet.

Pillow? What pillow? What could another hour or so of dreaming offer compared to this? At the end of the ride, you fall into cool water and turn to head back out.

When it’s time to head home, you still feel like you’re on a very, very brief vacation. That coffee and toast doesn’t seem like an unnoticed, un-savored daily routine, it seems like a reward. Through the day, you feel a little like you have your own secret, like you’ve gotten away with something, albeit something wholesome. You’ve snuck in some fun on a weekday.

OK, sure, sometimes you drag yourself out to find a waveless expanse from the beach to the horizon. Or sometimes, despite a good surf forecast, you get tossed and battered by choppy, closing waves that break everywhere but where you are, and eventually you have to paddle back in, feeling robbed of both sleep and rides.

But those mornings straddling your board, watching the sun climb in the sky, watching the beach rake make the rounds like threshers on a Midwest cornf ield, bobbing on the out side while you wait for the next set, can sometimes make you wonder why everyone isn’t out early in the waves.

Wait, scratch that. If everybody believes me and sets their alarm for 5:30 a.m., the next dawn patrol could be a much different scene.

Administration supports New Jersey's 2017 summer flounder regulations. What does this mean to anglers hitting Jersey's salt water in quest of a succulent dinner? At least for now, until the haggling starts against a proposed cut in our quotas for 2018, we can exhale. Get out the breading and fry up those fillets!

Those anglers doing exactly that are Robert Ferrin of Linwood with the 28 inch beauty he named the “Margate Monster”. To demonstrate the size of the fish, he put a tennis ball in its mouth. New Jersey anglers are not only smart but have terrific senses of humor. Congratulations Bob! Dragging the store floor with the net holding his five pound flounder was seven year old Alex Goldberg of Germantown, Pa. Alex attends Germantown Academy as does his fishing

partner five year old Asher. Three year old Ace finalized the team. Alex said “I have a tuna,” when reeling in his beast in the Longport Bridge area.

Ten year old Mark Ernst of Huntington Valley, Pa. caught his very first fish, an eighteen inch flounder while out on the Margate Bay with his family. His catch was nailed on a pink gulp in Lakes Bay. Kudos to these parents for taking their kids fishing. No NDD (Nature Deficit Disease) here!

Seasoned angler fourteen year old Ethan Vogin of Ventnor took high hook on his family's twenty-three foot Boston Whaler "Double EE" He has been fishing with his Dad Mark since before he walked.

The "Margate Monster" so named by the conquering angler (and humorist) Robert Ferrin of Linwood. Robert shows the perspective of a twenty-eight inch flounder's mouth so anglers aren't surprised by the size baits they swallow.

John Sulpizi of Roanoke, Virgina caught his first flounder this week on his great grandfather's rod and reel in a rental boat behind Margate. His family tradition continues!
