W

hat's your phone number? What 's your email address?

What's your zip code? Why do I need to provide all this information if I am purchasing something with cash and not applying for a mortgage loan? Everywhere we turn, it seems everybody wants our information, and we all know why.

It is compiled and analyzed into a market strategy used to sell us more and more things that we neither need nor want.

Recently, after procrastinating too long, my husband decided that he needed a haircut, and fast. He went into a "Walk-ins Welcome" salon.

Before even saying hello, the lady at the front desk said, "Did you register

online for a cut?" Bob shamefully replied, "No." The two older gentlemen behind him were asked the same question. It was clear they had no idea what she was talking about.

Next, instead of asking what kind of cut or service he would like, she said "What's your phone number?"

Bob complied. The older gentlemen revolted. One, with a snicker, gave a six-digit number instead of the anticipated seven digits. The other, with a defiant look in his eye, flat out refused. I silently wondered what his phone number had to do with his hair.

Can you have too much information and too little intuition? When a person enters a place of business, a friendly greeting seems like an obvious expectation. However, more and more, we are greeted with an immediate request, if not demand, for our information, with no apparent regard for the fact that we may not care to share it.

We live in the Information Age, in which our personal data is coveted because it equates to access and marketing power. I am not opposed to all the ways technology has changed our lives. Admittedly, I love my smart phone and can't even imagine living

one day without it. However, like most things in life, striking a balance is key.

Remembering to say hello and have an actual conversation with the people right in front of us is more essential than gaining data to be plugged into that vast, invisible storehouse called the internet. Conversation and connection are part of what makes us human.

Shore Local Newsmagazine is bucking the trend. Although we value our website and digital content, we love creating a tangible publication that can be paged through or left on the coffee table to revisit later. Photos and features of the people, places,

and exciting events in our community are of paramount importance to us.

This issue highlights some of the innovative and effective programs in our area that are responding to the opioid crisis and aiding addiction recovery. We also celebrate the commitment and generosity of Chefs on a Mission as they hit another milestone.

As in every issue, you will also find listings of fun activities for the whole family. We hope you are enjoying a fun, safe, and memorable summer.

Hometown Hero: Chefs on a Mission

It contains 30 months of work, 5,000 volunteer hours, donations from both local and national companies and an extra-large heaping of heart.

Hearts & Souls Heart Healthy Soup Program served their 75,000th bowl of soup to the homeless at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission on June 29.

In 2015 a group of Professional Volunteer Chefs, headed by Bob Harre, decided to make heart healthy soups for those staying at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to eat healthy when you are homeless.

Foods that are donated most frequently are highly processed, high sodium convenience foods that are not nutritionally ideal. Heart and Souls Healthy Hearts Soup Program is making a difference. They developed over 110 heart healthy soups, made under the same guidelines as set by the American Heart Association.

"There is so much need for people to have a place to stay and nutritious meals. It is time for us to give back," explained Wolfgang Geckeler.

Geckeler, a prominent chef in Atlantic City for decades, was inducted into the Chefs Hall of Fame in 2016. He is retired now but jokingly said he never worked harder.

The bases donated were vegetable, chicken, beef, clam and lobster. All of the products are easy to use and save tremendous amounts of labor. Additionally, WalMart, Cres Cor Corporation, M & S Produce Outlet, Vietnam Veterans Post 228, VFW Post 2189, Nordon PKE kitchen, The Lobster House in Cape May and many other generous companies locally and throughout the Country donated to the chefs’ mission.

Bowl number 75,000 was celebrated with a seafood jambalaya soup featuring shrimp, scallops and jumbo lump crab accompanied by Liz’s ‘now famous’ garlic bread croutons. A beautiful celebratory cake was also donated by Resorts International. All of the soups were made with top ingredients with most soups containing over one hundred pounds of

vegetables, fresh herbs, whole grains and high-quality proteins. The chefs prepare enough each week for clients to have the opportunity to eat three heart healthy meals.

Typically, six to eight chefs a week prepare and cook the soups. Many of the chefs are members of the Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey (PCASJ). The association sets high standards and even makes one-of-a-kind soups, such as lobster tail chowder, authentic jumbo lump crab gumbo, Atlantic City-style steak soup, and many classic soups served in the finest restaurants in the country.

The chefs’ work has appeared in the American Culinary Federations magazine for their unprecedented commitment to feeding the homeless.

In 2016, the PCASJ was presented with a Humanitarian Award for its charitable work in the

Seafood Jambalaya soup featuring shrimp, scallops and jumbo lump crab accompanied with Liz’s ‘now famous’ garlic bread croutons. community. It was the only chapter in the United States to have received this award.

Kenneth Trout is the president of the PCASJ (Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey) and is the Corporate Executive Chef of Icon Hospitality which oversees both the Carriage House and Gourmet Italian Cuisine, both located in Galloway.

The chefs will be taking a brief soup break while they publish their first cook book. All proceeds from the book will go to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

Trout said that the PCASJ is taking its mission to a national level. They have already traveled to Phoenix and Orlando to implement similar programs.

Music Pier Welcomes USO Show Troupe and The Hooters

The Ocean City Pops Orchestra will lead a musical voyage through the history of the USO in a concert Sunday, July 18th on the Ocean City Music Pier. The Pops will be joined by the USO Show Troupe performing songs made popular by the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and many more.

The USO Show Troupe is part of an American tradition that dates back to its beginnings in the muddy camp shows of the South Pacific during World War II. With more than 350 live annual performances, the Troupe

The Hooters perform shows on the Ocean City Music Pier on Monday and Tuesday (July 17 and 18). entertains approximately 600,000 service members and their families worldwide as well as nationally televised audiences. Sweet Recipes for Peach Lovers Vegging at the Shore

By Marci Lutsky isit a local farmers market this time of year and chances are that you will see Jersey peaches everywhere. Of all the local fruits I enjoy eating, peaches are probably my favorite. From July through August, I always have them ripening on my counter. In an ideal world, I would freeze them to enjoy all winter, but they just never last that long in my house.

While I love just biting into a sweet, juicy peach, there are plenty of other ways I enjoy them. Here are my favorites:

In Baked Goods Three years ago, my kids and I entered the Margate Farmers Market peach pie contest and we won second place. I can say with confidence that my peach pie recipe is out of this world good. Whenever I get invited to a barbecue or gathering over the summer, my peach pie is always requested. I also use peaches to make peach crisp and peach scones. The possibilities are endless.

Grilling them brings out their sweetness. Serve grilled peaches in a salad or as a dessert with vanilla ice cream.

In Overnight Oats Overnight oats is one of my favorite breakfast recipes. It’s so simple to make the night before and when you wake up, breakfast is ready. Did I mention how delicious it is? See below for the healthy recipe.

Stir with a spoon. Put tight fitting lid on and shake well. Place in refrigerator overnight and enjoy in the morning.

Hansen did what she does best, she gives people in recovery the chance to put their talents to good use. In Cameron’s case, he was always interested in gardening. She sent him for classes in farming and the rest is history.

What looked more like a jungle a year ago instead of a former golf course, was transformed by Cameron, others in recovery and volunteers, into a bucolic setting, with 400 acres dedicated to organic farming, horse trails and even bird-watching.

Some clients even take to the trails with staff. Safety is the top priority, Zinckgraf emphasized.

The other area of the equine therapy program is helping people with disabilities. Zinckgraf’s 10-year-old son Jimmy has autism. Working with horses every Sunday at Hope Farm has been a real confidence booster for him, she said. He even helps other autistic children during the sessions.

“Hope Farm is so special because we are building hope for the future of special children and people recovering from addiction to lead better lives with confidence and compassion,” Zinckgraf said. “This is all possible with thanks to our horses, some that came to us in need of a bit of help themselves.”

The Crab Cake & Grilled Cheese just opened in Somers Point, offering family-style casual dining.

Current Owner Adam Sciarillo, of Margate, saved the restaurant. Since the restaurant’s appearance on the Food Network, business skyrocketed. So much that the restaurant’s previous owners were left trying to keep up with demands.

Sciarillo and his friend Dominic Stigliano, of Williamstown were living in Florida when the opportunity came up to buy the eatery. Seeing potential, Sciarillo bought the restaurant, gathered a cleaning crew and renovated it.

Sciarillo made Stigliano the chef of the newly-acquired restaurant, and they opened for business.

Stigliano recalled recently that the restaurant was in poor condition at the time of its purchase.

He said the renovation team worked hard to transform the eatery into the family-friendly restaurant it is today.

“You could write your name in the window it was so dirty in here,” Stigliano recalled.

Sciarillo also did independent work while renovating his new business. He handmade pieces that hang on the walls, including a giant wooden crab sculpture. Sciarillo and Stigliano pride themselves

The food is fresh - never frozen, a quality Sciarillo said is important to ensure the highest quality taste possible.

“I believe in serving fresh, it’s definitely a better quality and healthier,” said Sciarillo. “I don’t believe in shortcuts.”

Most of the menu has remained the same as the prior owner’s entrees. The Crab Cake and Grilled Cheese offers customers various seafood selections such as a choose-your-own seafood basket. For sandwiches, a customer can create to his or her heart’s delight, or get a taste of select sandwiches from the menu. A customer pleaser and a favorite of Guy Fieri’s is “The Crab Melt,” made with Maryland Crab Cake, tomato, and Monterey Jack cheese.

On a hot summer day around 5 p.m., every seat in the restaurant is occupied, mostly with tourists. The Fischer and Gray family stopped in for the first time after visiting relatives in Ocean City.

They said after passing the restaurant numerous times, it was time to stop in and give the food a try. After their visit, they seemed convince they had found a new hotspot for their summer trips to Ocean City.

“I love crab cake, and I can’t get crab like this in California,” said Kathleen Fischer of Thousand Oaks, CA. “We’ll come back here every year now,” added Morgan Fischer.

Mom's Vibe: Lesson Learned

By Samantha E Gill. f you read a recent Mom's Vibe column on how to enjoy yourself on a budget during the summer, you'll remember that I shared I am in the 'same boat.'

I too, as a South Jersey mom am always in search of things for my kids and I to do that are affordable, fun and get us outside. It's so easy to get sucked into the iPad, kindle, on-demand, DVD-world, right? I admit the movie “Trolls” is super hilarious. I crack up every single time I watch it.

But it is the summer time. We are so fortunate that we are near the beach and boardwalk, if you can’t do those things, there are other ideas too. One idea I decided to do was hit the local hardware store and see what paint people never came to 'claim' that was on the clearance aisle.

We have a play fort of sorts, unpainted, in our backyard. So, since the girls are now 6 and 8, I decided to pick some cheap paint and we would turn the play fort into a Key West-style clubhouse. It was affordable and we could hang out in the backyard and they could help too.

My youngest, Addie, decided pink, sparkly, cowboy boots were the best footwear to paint in. (of course, right?) My other daughter Audrey, the “CEO” of the operation, was in her bathing suit. I stayed in

outside to get it and there were the two old concrete steps. Poof, just like that. Guess who fell? Yup. Mom. Luckily, my neighbor was still there and he helped keep the kids calm and brought them to my others neighbor’s home, so I could go to the emergency room.

So much for a "Key West" retreat huh?

But here's the crazy thing.

I have been on crutches ever since, non-weight bearing, no driving.

The kids haven't been to Heart of Surfing, karate, or the boardwalk, and we've all survived. My friends and their friends’ moms have been a team of helpers. I couldn't have done anything without them.

I have learned so much through this process as a mom, like asking others for help and not rushing.

We've done other things during this time like celebrated my daughter’s service dog’s birthday at the house,

shorts to monitor them both for safety because I am the mom. I ensured my daughter was safe on the ladder and even put ice cubes in my youngest daughter’s service dog’s water.

My kids love to do a ton of stuff locally in South Jersey. Their favorite things to do are join in the Heart of Surfing in Ocean City, hop on boardwalk rides, go to Storybook Land, catch some ocean breezes on Longport Beach and go to Karate in Somers Point. But on this day, they had a good time with mom in their very own back yard. I also got caught up in the day with them. I painted and they let me listen to my favorite Frank Sam, and daughters Addie, in her sparkly boots and Audrey Sinatra tunes. It was painting. a good day!

Yoga with Goats, a Different Kind of Calm

By Lindsay Kirkland oanne Thomson is the goat wrangler. She entices her goats toward the yoga mats of the participants with sunflower leaves and feed. The instructor moves forward with the class calling out "Downward facing dog" or is it "Downward facing goat?"

One preteen girl giggled as the goats began climbing on her. This is no ordinary yoga class. This is Yoga with Goats at the Angels in the Pines Farm in Egg Harbor City.

Angels in the Pines farm offers Yoga with Goats, Art with Goats, Breakfast with Goats and Goatcheese Making Class. It all started when Mark Thomson was reading The New York Times and came across an article about a woman in Oregon who began doing yoga with goats and now had a 600-people waiting list.

"We had the goats so we thought, why not?" Joanne Thomson said.

The Thomsons built their home 11 years ago on the land which originally belonged to Joanne’s great-great grandfather. He was a minister at the

The land was first purchased in 1964 by the family with the intention of allowing German immigrants to farm blueberries on it.

"Eventually the blueberries stopped growing, trees popped up and it was passed down to me" Thomson said.

And years later, the Thomsons are still making good use of the land.

“Although we do not have a 600-people waiting list, we are having a lot of fun," she remarked.

Participants seemed more than happy with their experience. Arlene Beebe, of Williamstown, brought her five grandchildren.

"It was fun. I would definitely do this again," said Beebe.

Kazoo was brought to the HSOC by a man who traveled to Philadelphia where Kazoo decided to hitch a ride in the bed of his pickup truck. He didn’t realize that the kitten was in there until he arrived back in Ocean City.

Kazoo was only six to eight weeks old at the time and was a bit worn out after his long trip. He needed a few weeks of TLC before being ready for adoption. He is ready now. A home with other pets would be ideal for this playful kitty. He would be a wonderful buddy to a cat looking for a friend to romp around with.

Luna is an 18-month-old, female German Shephard mix who has a personality as cute as her appearance. Having travelled up from Georgia looking for a forever home, Luna is a rather unique looking doggie. An easy-going and socially pleasant pooch, she loves snuggling, belly rubs and walk/ play time! She is attentive and affectionate, energetic and outgoing, but not rambunctious. She is quite intelligent and highly trainable, already having an introduction to basic obedience training. Luna is a well-suited companion for almost any family household, meet-n- greet is required; same goes for other dogs and cats. Community Foodbank Launches ‘Feed a Family’ Dine Out Fundraiser

ocal Restaurants Encourage Patrons to Add $5 to Their Bill to Combat Hunger To support its hunger-relief efforts in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey – Southern Branch in Egg Harbor Township will kick off a weeklong “Feed a Family” fundraiser in partnership with local restaurants. The dine out program will run from Sunday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 6.

Approximately 30 local restaurants have already signed on to encourage their patrons to add $5 to their bill.

“Adding $5 to your bill at any of the participating restaurants will allow the FoodBank to provide 15 meals for families in need in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties,” said Richard Uniacke, vice president of the southern branch. “We are so grateful to our generous partners and encourage other restaurants to join us.”

Uniacke said Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties have some of the highest rates of child food insecurity in the state; close to one in four kids in these communities doesn’t know where his or her next meal will come from.

“Families make tough choices every day to provide for their children, often deciding between food and other necessities and skipping meals so their kids have enough to eat,” Uniacke said. “Summertime is the toughest season for food insecure children and their families because kids don’t have access to the healthy school meals they rely on.”

Uniacke added, “The FoodBank is serving nutritious summer meals to help fill the gap, but there’s much more to be done to eliminate hunger in our region. ‘Feed a Family’ provides a simple way for South Jersey residents to support their struggling neighbors as they dine out with their families.”

By Matthew Maher of Coastal Christian Church t was around this time three years ago that I anxiously awaited my release from state prison. After serving four-and-a-half years, I had no idea what to expect beyond the walls that I had come to know so well.

Countless inmates had told me to never get used to the dismal setting on the inside; but I realized early on that, like a diamond, I must accept the setting the jeweler chooses for me.

I write figuratively in using a diamond and its setting to explain my motivation for accepting my imprisonment as the catalyst for my future freedom. The setting that “holds” you can very well be the setting that eventually displays you. A diamond with the right setting is a diamond that makes an impression.

That July in 2014 was actually one of the hardest times, even though it was the closest month to my release, and all because of a prison break that put my

entire unit on lockdown. It was the day before the Fourth of July, and a fellow inmate decided to take Independence Day to a whole new level.

As a consequence of his fateful decision to declare physical freedom for himself, we were all subjected to 24-hour shakedowns and degrading strip-searches. In fact, I was stripsearched more times in that final month than in the entire four-and-a-half years.

It was a very uneasy time due to everyone’s emotions and frustrations, which were running high. Prisoners and officials alike were caught up in the unstable tension. To be locked up is one type of animal, but to be on lockdown while locked up is an entirely different beast.

I bring up this time in my life to encourage the individual who thinks his circumstances are hopeless, and the one who believes that no good can come from such bad; to uplift the person who imagines she is so close to the resolution, yet feels so far away.

Consider my life and story to see how every setting and every setback can, in fact, be the setup that God desires to use for His glory. I cannot erase my past, but forgiveness has erased my guilt and shame. God specializes in recycling good from evil and creating beauty from ashes. I accepted my setting early on, and I still appreciate it even today.

In hindsight, the shakedowns and strip-downs that I experienced in the month of July three years ago, right before my release, were nothing more than the necessary tests to make sure the diamond did not come loose. Using another appropriate analogy, the final pressurized month was simply the last phase of metamorphosis. After many days encapsulated in the tiny shell of the chrysalis, a butterfly is ready to emerge.

God will use every bit of space in your situation to refine you and define Him. He proves His love through our pain. He grants us purpose through our problems. He will reveal Himself through the person who allows Him to do so.

Sign-ups are at 3:30 p.m. at Ocean City’s 7th Street Surf Beach. The contest starts at 4 p.m., waves and weather permitting.

The vibe among young surfers competing at OCSA is extremely friendly and fun. Contest directors Lisa Roselli and Joe Grottola (who also run the Eastern Surfing Association contests) are proud of the contest’s 50-year tradition of fun catching waves with friends. “We surfed in the O.C.S.A. when we were little kids in the early ’70s, when the contest accommodated all ages. The summer events usually ran until it was getting dark and all the

boardwalk lights were on,� Roselli said. “Back then, 7th Street had little beach and at high tide we used to finish our rides under the boardwalk with tourists and spectators lining the rails. It was definitely the highlight of our week as kids to come up to Ocean City each Tuesday night, see our O.C.S.A. friends and compete.�

As ESA co-directors Roselli and Grottola took over running the O.C.S.A. summer series events around 1990 when they moved back to the area from California. “The contest had kind of lost momentum and we wanted to bring it back because it meant so much to us as kids, and because we figured it would be a great feeder program for the ESA,� Roselli and Grottola wrote in an e-mail.

The two decided to focus on surfers 14 and under, just like George Gerlach's (from Surfer's Supplies) long-running Peck's Beach events.

Those first summers were bleak; with only a few young surfers coming out, but it grew.

At some point, in the mid ’90s, Greg Beck from Surfer's Supplies and Tracy and Jim Hennessy from Heritage Surf & Sport started coming to every event to help. Beck stepped away a few years back, but the Hennessys continue to be at every contest, as does Tom McClaren, an ESA veteran and New Jersey Surfing Hall of Famer from Linwood. He has been involved with the O.C.S.A. since the beginning, Roselli and Grottola explained.

Roselli and Grottola said they continue to have lots of fun running the O.C.S.A. Monday night events. It's still a highlight of their week.

ssault on Patcong Creek – the nation’s largest crabbing tournament – took place in the waters surrounding Somers Point on

June 24.

More than 270 crabbers from 12 states participated in this year’s tournament, which brought in a grand total of 24 bushels of crabs during the Eighth Annual Assault on Patcong Creek Crabbing Tournament and Barbecue.

Crabbers descended on the waters of Patcong Creek, Great Egg Harbor Bay, Great Egg Harbor River, Middle River, Tuckahoe River, Tuckahoe-Corbin City Fish and Wildlife Management Areas, Peck Bay, Steelman Bay and Scull Bay, hoping to make the big catch of the day.

The tournament winners of the Largest Crab Contest were Phil DiPietro and his wife Michelle of Norristown, PA. The winning crab measured 7 3/8 inches, beating last year’s winner of 7 1/8 inches.

With bushel baskets and crabbing traps in hand, participating teams launched their vessels onto the water in search of rich crab

habitats. Teams included long-time friends, husbands and wives, father-daughter and father-son duos.

“I’m extremely pleased with this year’s tournament turnout,” said Ron Meischker, Somers Point Harbormaster and founder of the event. “People from all over the country circle the weekend of the tournament on their calendars and kick off their summer by coming to Somers Point for the weekend.”

The tournament raised over $6,000 for The Patcong Creek Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports environmental and educational initiatives on the waterways surrounding Somers Point.

Stockton professor authors book about grandfather

By Beth Wade here is a long, long thread that connects professional and personal parts of Gina Maguire’s life.

During this past year, the adjunct professor at Stockton University in Galloway has taken on a variety of writing projects. She’s either working with members of the senior population on a writing class through the local university or helping put together a resource guide for caregivers. Her biggest project, though, is a book she’s authored about her grandfather’s life, which is expected to be published this year.

“These projects have been a dream come true. I feel fortunate to have been able to incorporate my passions – creativity, writing, and working with older adults – into a career,” said Maguire, who is also a licensed social worker and program assistant at the Stockton Center on Successful Aging.

Her career has also helped prepare her for an important role at home, as caregiver. Maguire has assisted two family members, her mother-in-law and grandfather. Extended periods of time with her grandfather led to a book.

Maguire began collecting interviews, photos and letters during the months her grandfather lived with her.

With his permission, she wrote, “It was Fate – A War, A Massacre, A Romance: The World War II Memoirs of Nick Venturella.”

The book tells the story of Venturella, a Brooklyn native and American soldier who was part of the liberation of Dora-Mittelbau Concentration Camp.

While overseas, he met his German bride, which adds the element of a romance to the story.

Maryann McLoughlin, director of Writing as Witness Program at Stockton University, helped Maguire write the book, which is expected to be out in the fall or winter.

In addition to writing the book, Maguire has been organizing and offering

a unique writing program called Time to Tell, to seniors participating in story writing through the Stockton Center on Successful Aging. The group meets monthly to compose stories. One of the writers in the first group is being published, which has been an unexpected, exciting outcome for Maguire and the writer.

Later this summer, Narratives on Positive Aging: Recipes for Success, will be available. That’s a collection of the stories written by the seniors in Maguire’s class. The textbook is written

by Lisa Cox, professor of social work at Stockton. Maguire has co-written three of the chapters as well as shared some family recipes in the anthology.

As if all Maguire’s many “hats” weren’t enough in her collection, there’s one more she wears. She is an organizer of the Cape Atlantic Caregivers Coalition. Boasting 50 members, they work to support caregivers in South Jersey. An important goal of the group was to develop a resource guide, which may be available in the fall or winter.

And yes, Maguire is helping write that, too.

“It’s been rewarding—all of it,” Maguire said. “It’s a good feeling to sit back and think about what I’ve been able to do to make a difference to members of my family as well as the community as a whole.”

The Cape Atlantic Caregiver Coalition meets on the third Thursday of every month at the Galloway Library, 306 E. Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway.

Eberson Since two important holidays, Mothers’ Day and Memorial Day fell in the month of May, I thought it appropriate to start publishing an interview I conducted with my mother, Yetta. My mother was living in London during the Blitz of World War II. The Blitz was a bombing campaign where German planes attacked British cities every day and night for eleven weeks starting in September 1940.

Yetta was 17 years old at the time. That experience helped shape the strong independent woman she became and also reminded me that however difficult life’s challenges can be, at least I didn’t have to fear bombs falling from the sky. My mother resided in Margate for over 50 years and sadly passed away on January 10, 2010. Due to its length, the interview will be published over the next few issues. All the words are her own. The only

t’s funny, you know. You try and keep on with your life as you would normally but nothing is normal. Every Sunday, I went with my cousin Ginger to a dance hall on Tottingham Court Road in the West End of London, which is underground. Her mother and father went to a bomb shelter near the dance hall. It was a very bad night and they wouldn’t let us out of the dance hall and we were told we might have to spend the night in there. We were permitted to make a call, so I called my parents, explained the circumstances and told them I would not be home. Ginger and I spent the night. The boys were kept on one side of the dance hall and the girls on the other. There were men walking up and down all night to make sure there was no monkey business. At about 11 p.m. things outside had quieted down and we were told if we wanted to leave now would be a good time, so we left. When we got outside, there was glass everywhere. We were walking on glass. We got about 30 feet and we heard screaming from the air raid shelter that Ginger’s mother was in. There was a fire in there so I rushed in and grabbed Ginger’s mother and was pulling

her out. We got her about halfway out and she tried to go back in again yelling that her bedding was still in there. We told her she wasn’t going to get anything if she went back in there but you have to remember, these people were poor. The fire department came and put out the small fire and Ginger’s mother went back in and got her bedding finally. We went to her house, slept about three hours and then I went home, showered and went in to work. My father never talked much about it, but I know he stayed up until I got home. He said he could tell my footsteps when I came down the sidewalk. But we were young, and I never thought about how they felt. Every weekend I was in the West End of London. Many a time I didn’t come home. The West End was where the bombs were being dropped but who worried about it? It can never happen to you. That’s the way you think when you’re that age.

After the war, my mother met Bernard, an American airman. She left England with him, they got married and after being stationed in Long Island and Maine, they finally settled in Atlantic City on Albany Avenue across from what was then Bader field. After a couple more moves they made Margate their permanent residence but mum always referred to England as “home.”

By Jeff Whitaker was on a video consulting call this past week and right in the middle of our session, just as my client was about to share some important information, our connection froze. I could still see an image of him on my computer screen, but his voice broke up and within a few seconds went totally silent. Ironically, we were talking about ways to connect when you communicate and we couldn’t even talk with each other. Our real life situation is emblematic of what happens with many of us all too often.

Maybe you feel as if you’re talking, but not getting through. I want to offer three suggestions to help you connect when you communicate. Use these three steps and you’ll find yourself connecting personally as well as in your business or organization.

I

It’s Not About You. Whenever you meet someone or enter into a conversation for the first time, focus the conversation toward the other person. The truth is there is no one a person likes to talk about more than him or herself.

Ask Questions. The more curious you become, the more you’ll learn about the other person and this is where you begin to connect. Find out their background, what makes them tick, what moves them.

Frame The Conversation. The beauty of approaching a conversation this way is that you not only engage the other person, you also learn valuable information that can lead to a meaningful outcome.

The reality is, by approaching your communication this way you go a long way toward advancing your relationship with that person. You gain an understanding of what interests him or her.

They tell you they love food. You find common stories to share about food.

They love a particular sport. Now you’ve got something to bring into the conversation. The opposite is true as well. They dislike a certain type of music. You avoid spending time talking about music. In other words, find commonality. In the context of business, this opens up tremendous opportunities for you. When

you find a topic that is relatable, you work that into your business conversation. This gives you the chance to share how you or your product might add value to them as it relates to that topic.

The bottom line is, in commonality we find connection. Try it the next time you enter into a conversation with someone.

The Forgotten Adventure Village

However, for this piece, I’ve decided to throw aside the self-assigned stipulation and talk about a place that no longer exists, but is still very much alive in the hearts of people old enough to remember it and Weird NJ readers, alike.

I used to visit the defunct park when I was in high school with friends. By then, the buildings were converted into apartments, and some of the old trappings still peppered the grounds. It was hidden very well by the trees and overgrowth, which made it clear that the people living there

Harbor Township, NJ. For many years, the decayed remains of this once-bustling tourist attraction could just barely be seen behind the thick foliage while stuck in traffic on the Black Horse Pike.

What exactly was Adventure Village? It would seem a bit unusual in its attractions if open today. Unlike the thrill rides that populate fun parks now, where intensity is key and a headache by the end of the day is inevitable, Adventure Village was made up of more mellower fare. There was a Model T ride and a rickety old train that rode through the woods.

There was a diamond mine where, I’m guessing, children were given faux spades and pick-axes to simulate how treasure hunting in the nineteenth century was done.

There was an imprisoned convict named “Slippery Sam” who would converse with children behind bars and occasionally escape and run amuck.

did not want to be bothered. We did have a confrontation with one gentleman, and he was friendly enough. He even told my friends and I that the jail was up for rent if we were interested.

Adventure Village is gone now.

In 2009, the property was bought and torn down. An Auto Lenders

is in its place. I find this a great tragedy for two reasons: the first being that vintage things and places are in demand more so now than ever before, and it probably would have made a killing if it was refurbished; secondly, and more importantly, it would have been eligible to become a historic spot.

According to the National Register of Historic Places, a property can reach its historic status when it is 50 years old or older. The irony is that in 2009, when Adventure Village was destroyed, it turned 50.

There is nothing to be done about the now-extinct Adventure Village. It’s gone. It does offer a good lesson, though. Sometimes what the past has to offer is better than what the future wants to replace it with. A place like Adven-

ture Village may not be as exciting as Six Flags or Disney World, but that’s not the point and never was the point to begin with. The point was anthropological and historical. The point was about vicariousness and experiencing a time different than are own.

And with the hyper-reality we all live in today (whether we like it or not), Adventure Village might have offered a good remedy. It would have offered something more potent than a parking lot, at least.

In the span of a week, it’s gone from shiver-inducing ice water if you’re in with anything short of a full wetsuit to close to perfect, with temperatures closing on 70 degrees. On a recent paddle out, the water was a clear green that made riding a good wave seem like flying, watching the sand wiz by underneath. You could float all day, basking in the salty joy, with your only worries your steadily wrinkling fingers and whether that guy on the SUP was going to try to hone in on your almost empty beach break.

Of course, for the most part, when the water warms for the summer, the waves go away. Cruel fate. By autumn, things will pick up, and occasionally the Jersey shore will see some real swell in July, but don’t hold your breath.

Typical for the summer doldrums, the surf forecast shows day after day after day of 1- to 2-foot waves.

Sometimes, that’s enough, if there is enough wave to move the board.

I’ve been talking to some hardcore surfers lately, men and women who paddle out every chance they get, summer and winter.

Every vacation is to a surf spot, every conversation centers on waves. They have rooms full of surfboards shaped for every kind of wave. Some say they are easing up, settling for merely overhead waves instead of seeking out the 18-foot monsters. Others remain

You can put me in squarely in the later camp.

I’ve been in hurricane waves, and frankly, they usually scare the snot out of me. It’s a little better if the break is right, and the waves have a consistent peak from which to take off. That gives the surfer a path to ride into the clean, unbroken part of the wave. But on the beach breaks that make up most of the Jersey shore, those big waves are just as likely to tumble into a big, messy closeout, when the whole face of the wave breaks at once and takes you and your board tumbling fast toward the bottom.

In these little summer waves,

that’s just not much of a worry.

Even if you do go for a tumble, the worst you’re likely to get is a nasal cavity filled with salt water. It’s like nature’s Neti pot.

There’s always a tradeoff. It’s hard to park near the beach, there are people almost everywhere in the water, and the lifeguards won’t let you surf your regular spot, but with all of that, there’s a lot to be said for paddling out without an inch of neoprene, much less a 5-4 wetsuit, gloves and booties.

And you can leave the outside shower turned on without any concern at all that the pipes might freeze.

The clarity offered a disturbing view of the swaths of brown passing under the board, but it was all just seaweed. Once in a while, you may see a little shark from the board while waiting for a wave in New Jersey, but they are almost always way too small to do any damage. And I’ve never heard of a skate hurting someone in Jersey, but it’s still a little freaky when they glide under the board in clear water. There are just as many around when the water is murky, but you don’t have to see them so you don’t worry.

The floor of the ocean determines how a wave will break. In deep water, waves can travel for hundreds of miles, rolling along after being formed by the prevailing winds. So, when the waves are small, you need a sandbar to break them a little farther out or else you have to try to ride them up onto the beach. A nice sandbar lets you catch even a tiny wave, and roll along before the wave dissipates in the deeper water closer to shore.

That’s also a good spot to disembark from the board, without taking a tumble in the shallow water of the sand bar.

The best spots seem to come and go fast, not just with the tides, but also with the quickly-shifting sand and the direction of the wind.

↘Continued from 44 adventurous children had to be rescheduled. Once at the beach, the waves were far bigger than their parents had signed up for, and a formerly consistent sandbar was nowhere to be found.

The grownups caught a couple of fun rides, but those perfect, warm, less-than-knee-high waves

over a friendly sandbar were nowhere to be found, at least not until the kids went home. The next trip, there were the waves we had been looking for, right where we left them. Two days late for the party.

There’s a lesson in there somewhere, but you’ll have to figure it out yourself. I’m going surfing.

When waters warm up, the waves get smaller, but hard-core surfers take them as they come and love every minute of it.

was outfitting a family for a trip on the bay in a pontoon boat. As they waited on the floating dock, the Reading, Pa. Szczepkowski family noticed a large fish swimming near the water surface. Thinking bluefish, Vinny rigged eleven year old Ayden's rental pole with a mackerel strip. The fish grabbed the bait and rocketed off

toward the channel. Ayden reeled in as ferociously as any offshore angler turning the beasts head back toward the dock. It shot back at him wrapping around pilings in its best effort to outwit the angler. After much wrangling, Ayden won the battle, and an amazing dinner. The striped bass weighed in at 9 pounds, twenty-eight inches in length.

Margate resident Jerry Lerner recently retired and moved full time to our little island town. Not one to dawdle, Jerry jumped whole-heartedly into the joys of Margate's section of Beach Thorofare, even buying a new boat to forever squelch the “shlocal� (shoobie local) label of our second home owners. His three and a half pound, twenty-three inch flounder on his first fishing outing confirmed his full time status in the town.

Other locals, Robin Hirsch and Mike Sherman of Margate and Scott Engel of Longport have led this summers charge to a stellar fishing summer.

Blues blitz! Electric words in the

middle of the summer. As tiny peanut bunker flooded Beach Thorofare this week, three to five pound blues gobbled the delicacies inciting a riot among gulls. Chomping bluefish pulverized baby bunker creating an oil slick on the water surface and an easy meal for birds. Blues role in bay ecology is critical, feeding all sort of species as shreds from their blitzes drift to the bay bottom. Not to mention the few quick minutes of angling excitement provided anyone close enough to get into the fray.

Invading baitfish also tweaked the flounder bite with anglers reporting thirty shorts per eighteen inch keeper. Striped bass action has anglers catching with surface poppers all times of the day and kingfish are reported off the surf, biting small pieces of squid, shrimp and artificial blood worms. Cownose rays ranging from twenty-six to thirty-six pounds are hitting frequently providing an exhilarating fighting experience. As the water heats up so does angling action in Margate.

LPGA Teaching Professional Cheri Rice-Cottelli Celebrates 20 Years

As a youngster, Rice-Cottelli would annually volunteer at the Shoprite Classic while it was held at her hometown golf club, Greate Bay, formerly Sands Country Club and Ocean City Country Club, where the very best lady professionals from around the world played from 1988 to 1997. Tour stars, including some World Golf Hall of Famers such as the great Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam, plus Betsy King and Julie Inkster, and fan favorites Dottie Pepper and Rice-Cottelli’s golfing hero, and friend, Michelle McGann, all won at Greate Bay. Rice-Cottelli grew up around the game with her father, Chuck, an avid golfer.

Rice-Cottelli is president of the local LPGA Girls Golf Club. She teaches children and adults and incorporates yoga, tumbling, crafting and STEM (Science, Technology and Math) activities with her golf instruction for kids at her summer golf camps at Hamilton Trails.

“The goal with teaching children is to make it fun so they want to come back to the course to practice and play,” said Rice-Cottelli. “We teach etiquette and the morals of the game too. Adults, usually have more playing experience. The goal with all of my students is to keep things simple and fun.”

Rice-Cottelli’s pupil, Min Ye, 39, benefits from her experience and “keeping it simple” and fun approach to golf instruction.

“Cheri is great at customizing drills for the individual,” said Ye. “Being a school teacher, she’s very good at explaining things so that a six-year-old can understand. She’s the best golf teacher I’ve ever had.”
