Volunteers Lend a Brush to Gateway Playhouse

omers Point– Somers Point Councilmen Dennis Tapp and Kirk Gerety coordinated an all-volunteer effort to paint the interior of the Gateway Playhouse. The Playhouse is scheduled to open its doors this fall.

“We’re glad to do our part in assisting with the renovations of the
Gateway Playhouse,” said Dennis Tapp, Somers Point Councilman. “We can’t wait for the renovations to be finished and for the Playhouse to open in the fall,” he explained. Joining Councilmen Tapp and Gerety on the Gateway interior painting project were Somers Point Councilmen James Toto and Sean McGuigan, Business Administrator Wes Swain along with Paul Hubert, Jr., from the Somers Point Zoning Board and Recreation Commission, Mike Owen from the Recreation Commission, Sean Igoe from the Somers Point Planning Board, and Somers Point resident Mike Kedziora. Sherwin Williams Paint Store in Somers Point generously donated paint cans and brushes to the Gateway Playhouse project. In 2015 , two New Jersey state-funded grants to fund the completion of the Gateway Playhouse on Bay Avenue were awarded to the city. The two-story, 5,000-square-foot building will feature a 1,000-squarefoot stage and seating for 240 guests on the ground floor; and office space with five rooms – including a conference room – as well as state-of-theart lighting and sound booths on the second floor. The theater is located in the City’s Historic District and is owned by the
City and a local non-profit, the Theater Collaborative of South Jersey (TCNJ). Much of the exterior work is completed but the playhouse’s interi-

A Simple Loving Gesture: Just Be There

how up! Most things in life start with that simple, yet critical step. It’s not the Hallmark moments that define a dad. It’s whether dad shows up, in a positive way, for his child. The day to day, ordinary, even mundane moments are what adds up to create extraordinary fathers. Some people even say that love, most simplified, is defined as just showing up, relentlessly. Jack Pearson, of the popular television series “This is Us,” epitomizes the perfect dad. He speaks encouragement using perfectly impactful words and creates memories that make him seem larger than life. Fortunately, no real-life dad has to measure up to this television fatherhood. There is no such thing as a “perfect

I remember him coming home from work, gardening, sitting at the dinner table, and talking. He loved to talk about everything and anything. Hometown Hero: Ventnor’s Amazing Michael Einwechter By Lindsay Kirkland
M
ichael Einwechter has Ventnor City written in his DNA and even more so, on his heart. He was born and raised on Dorset Avenue in Ventnor and currently lives a stone’s throw away. Einwechter is the owner and operator of Shallus Construction Company which was originally called George Shallus Plaster, started by Einwechter’s grandfather on 1954.

In early October 2012, just before Hurricane Sandy hit, Einwechter planned the Ventnor Autofest that featured five bands and 140 cars. During 2012, he worked closely with
Fast forward to 2017, when Einwechter formed the Amazing Ventnor nonprofit. It’s a new name with the same mission, to bring a lot of people together to have fun and show people what a great town Ventnor is to live in. Einwechter said the goal is: “One thousand smiles on one thousand faces.” Ventnor celebrated the first Porchfest. The event brought 92 bands that played on 37 porches throughout Ventnor all day and culminated with a huge beach concert on Newport Avenue beach featuring the music of Funk Daddy. The beach was packed and the sand was transformed into a dance floor. At the end of a long day that brought the community together, and added an excitement to the air all over Ventnor, Einwechter wrote “Can’t thank everyone enough. The bands – amazing. The hosts- amazing. The volunteers – amazing. The community – super amazing.” He was too humble to mention the creator and coordinator of this successful event – the very Amazing Michael Einwechter. Though he certainly seems to have a knack for it, Einwechter is the first to say he is not an event producer. He is not making any money out of it, yet

The Miss New Jersey Pageant will be held in Ocean City for the 21st consecutive year in 2017, and the pageant includes four days of events that are
open to the public. The winner of the pageant will be crowned on Saturday evening (June 17) and move on the represent New Jersey in the Miss America Pageant on Sept. 10 in Atlantic City. The public can get a glimpse of all 28 Miss New Jersey contestants during a parade that starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday (June 14) and proceeds from Sixth Street to 14th Street on the Ocean City Boardwalk. This year’s theme is “Television Comes Alive on the Boardwalk,” and the contestants will be dressed according to the theme. In a longstanding pageant tradition, they also will “show their shoes.” The parade also includes marching bands, entertainers, community groups and local business entries. Pageant preliminary competitions will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday (June 15 and 16) on the Ocean City Music Pier. The preliminaries include swimsuit and talent competitions, and interview questions, among other show elements. Our reigning Miss New
Jersey, Brenna Weick, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the pageant finale at the Music Pier at 7 p.m. Saturday. Action News 6-ABC weather anchor Karen Rogers will host the pageant all three nights. She’ll be joined by a co-host and former Miss New Jersey, Dena Blizzard, on Thursday evening. Contestants with local ties include Natalie Ragazzo, a former Little Miss Ocean City, and Madison Kennelly, a former Ocean City Intermediate School student. My kids don’t always choose from the kidsmenu but it’s nice to have as an option. Thekidsmenu will include a cheeseburger, cheese quesadilla, grilled cheese, pasta in butter or alfredo sauce, seared chicken and seared steak. The interior is a beautiful space. C Eatery is opening later this month in Ocean City and will be a completely new concept for the island. You can expect upscale food with fast, casual service from Chef Michael Giampa. Chef Giampa has traveled around the world working in upscale restaurants and more recently worked as a consultant opening food and beverage concepts for casinos, resorts, hotels and cruise ships. He is returning to his roots at the Jersey shore with the opening of OC Eatery. The menu at OC Eatery focuses on fresh, local ingredients. Breakfast will be served daily until 11a.m. Chef Giampa’s dishes are influenced by his extensive travels and include many of his family’s favorites. One of his
signature breakfast dishes is the bomb breakfast burrito with eggs, bacon, cheese and red beans. Other breakfast items will include the waffle of the day, which will change depending on what is in season as well as brioche French toast with bourbon syrup and whipped butter. Lunch and dinner items are all mouth-watering. I can say this with confidence since I was lucky enough to sample some dishes recently. Sweet corn and crab soup will be offered daily. I also sampled manchego chips with roasted garlic orange marmalade. If you love manchego cheese and potato chips, you will love these. The beach makes me very hungry and the deviled eggs and manchego chips are exactly what I would want to snack on at the end of a day at the shore. He will also serve a variety of tacos, salads and sandwiches. Don’t miss the chilled California crab roll. It’s like a lobster roll, but fresher and without the mayonnaise. Anightly offering of fresh fish, meat and poultry will be served from 5-8 p.m., prepared very simply.

love the summer and the beach at the shore. It’s not because I get a deep, dark tan– hardly. It’s not because I swim in the ocean or surf. It’s because I do my best reading with my toes in the sand. Nothing beats a warm summer day, your beach chair and a good book. Well, maybe having a cooler of cold beer at your side. I work for the Ocean City Free Public Library and I’m always asked what I’m reading or what’s good to read. Here are a few of my favorites. I’ve also included two selections for those young adults who not only want to plow through their summer reading lists, but might enjoy reading something for fun.

Inspired by visitor stories and comments heard over the years of personal accounts of growing up or living in the Inlet, this storytelling series is a way to share the rich history of Atlantic City with visitors and residents alike. Tend to Your Garden as Temps Soar allows leaves to rehydrate through absorption, in addition to roots receiving hydration. Just don’t ever do it at the hottest part of the day. Some plants like basil, function best when atop a watertight tray, allowing self-regulation of water intake through bottom-feeding. These issues become important when faced with multiple days of heat and intense sunlight. The wonderful part of this process is that right now your garden- provided you follow our directions in prior columns- should be just about exploding with color, scent and expansion. This also translates to more work for you. Like the inevitable process of pruning. Most herb plants will need to be trimmed back regularly. If allowed to fully flower the plant will shorten its life cycle and ‘go to seed’ prematurely. Pinch the flowering extensions and cut a bit below them.

his past weekend’s sudden surge in temps means that if your garden is like mine, it has literally exploded with
growth. We are also approaching the summer equinox, when the sun plots its slowest, most laborious path across the sky, which means lot and lots of bright, life-giving sunlight. One of our favorite tips this time of year is to avoid watering plants during the hottest, sunniest parts of the day. There are two reasons; first, it is not as effective due to the quick loss created by evaporation under the summer sun’s command.Second, if you are using a hose, water sitting atop leaves during intense periods of sunlight has the potential to burn, or even kill them. Try to provide water either by 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. But if you see them wasting away at midday, add water directly to the soil, not the leaves. The use of a hose as a gentle spray

This will in turn force the plant to create a pair of new extended branches, each baring plenty of additional leaves, not seeds. The other major ta sk you’ll need to address presently is weeding. It is impor tant to remove native plants when they are small, so that their root s do not become entangled with flowers and herbs. If they do, cut the weed as close to ground as possible, then cover with a small stone to prevent light and further upward shoots. The final thing you’ll need to address is predation. Watch and frequently monitor the development of precious flowers on your plants, above all tender young tomatoes. Birds and squirrels will frequently feast upon foliage. If you notice this happening, visit your local hardware vendor for a protective mesh cover product called ‘Bird Block’ and extend it around your valuable garden.

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

Since two important holidays, Mothers’ Day and Memorial Day fell in the month of May, I thought it appropriate to start publishing an interview I conducted with my mother, Yetta. My mother was living in London during the Blitz of World War II. The Blitz was a bombing campaign where German planes attacked British cities every day and night for eleven weeks starting in September 1940. Yetta was 17 years old at the time. That experience helped shape the strong independent woman she became and reminded me that however difficult life’s challenges can be, at least I didn’t have to fear bombs falling from the sky. My mother resided in Margate for over 50 years

and sadly passed away on Jan. 10, 2010. Due to its length, the interview will be published over the next few issues. All the words are her own. The only changes I made were for ease of reading.

y mum would come out to Cambridge by bus to visit me and on one occasion while she was going back home to Hempstead, the bus stopped and couldn’t go any further. The area was roped off so she got off the bus and walked home. When she got home, she found that a bomb had blown all the windows out and a man was there from city hall to board it up. That was the only damage although a Russian woman was staying on the second floor. Glass flew all over her bed. She was alright, but her bird was killed so she was very upset about that. We were blasted out twice during the war. I was there one time. The bomb wasn’t close but it still shattered all the windows out front. One night it was the worst. It was just the most horrible night I could ever think of. It was very bad and we could hear a lot of planes around. They were dropping bombs everywhere. There was oneparticularplane and I focused on that one plane. Mum and I used to go under the stairs and we would sit under there. But this time, I decided that we should go into the bedroom and sit on the bed. I don’t know why we did that but that is what I wanted to do right then and there. While sitting on the bed, I counted the bombs and they landed. One bomb landed some distance away, the second bomb closer, the third even closer and I turned to my mum and said, “If there is another one, we’ve had it.” I could tell the spacing of the bombs as they hit and the ground trembled with the third bomb. We sat there and
held hands and nothing happened. It was too late. Too much time had passed and we wouldn’t have still been here. But where it went was my girlfriend’s flat just a few blocks away. It was an apartment building with two sides. A corridor separated them. After an air-raid everyone ran out the door to see what happened so I ran out and said to my mum, “Oh my God. It’s Pamela’s building.” I saw Pamela standing across the street and motioned her to come over but she wouldn’t. She was scared to death. What happened that night was they decided they were going to sleep over at the neighbor on the other side of the building. Pamela’s half of the building was demolished completely down to the ground. The people on that side of the building were killed. But where Pamela stayed that night, not a window was broken. It was like someone came and just sliced the building in half. My brother’s friend Sid lived with his father. He went to work one day and came home to find that the house had taken a direct hit. His father was inside. Sid went berserk. He went to Israel and never came back. The Germans were dropping incendiary bombs on London, they came down in the hundreds. We would look up at the sky and over the West End of London it was red, like blood. It was terrible to see. It was shocking. All of London was on fire. My cousin David was in the middle of it. He was a Conscientious Objector so he was taken into the fire brigade. It was the worst place he could have possibly been. Part 5 will appear in the next issue.

Men’s U.S. Open starts this week First American born U.S. Open Men’s Champion was from AC Throughout his golfing career, he was victorious in playoff after playoff. In 1911, McDermott won the first of his back-to-back U.S. Open titles at just 19 years old. He won his second straight U.S. Open a year later in his second year at Atlantic City Country Club defeating a star-studded field at The Country Club of Buffalo with a four-round total of 294, or -2. In 1913, McDermott finished just four shots back and tied for eighth behind caddie Francis Ouimet. He placed fifth that same year at the British Open which, at the time, was the best, and highest, finish by any American player at that stage. And in1914,McDermott tied for ninth place at the U.S. Open, which was won by the legendary Walter Hagen.McDermott won seven professional tournaments in all. McDermott’s love of the game expanded into the evening hours, known to hit golf balls at the practice range from right around 5 a.m. before until opening the pro shop at 8 a.m. and then lateruntil dark. His golf career was cut short, however, by an accident and resulting illness.

Top professional golfers from around the world will be there competing to win this year’s coveted trophy. But did you know that the very first American born U.S. Open Men’s champion was from right here in Atlantic City? It was none other than Atlantic City Country Club’s head professional John. J. McDermott. McDermott became the club head professional in 1911. He broke through that very year and became the 17th man, but first American born, when in 1911, he won at the Chicago Country Club. McDermott was born in August of 1891 in Philadelphia. id someone ever snap their fingers in your face? Not in a rude way, but as a wake-up call. You know the deal. “Hey, listen! Pay attention!” We all have those times in life where we seem to move from one day to the next, one week to the next, one month and so on and so on. Time just seems to pass us by. And every once in a while, we all need someone to wake us up. Maybe figuratively splash cold water on our face. There is a song out now on the country charts called, “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney. The implications are obvious. The words of the song are powerful. Part of the chorus says, “Don’t blink. Just like that you’re six years old and you take a nap and you wake up and you’re 25 and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife. Don’t blink.”
It may not be quite that quick, but life does seem to fly by in the blink of an eye. That’s been made even more real to me this week as my wife and I watch our oldest, wearing cap and gown, walk across a football field and graduate from high school. It really does seem like yesterday I was holding her in my arms in a hospital room on the day she was born. I remember a dear friend sharing early on, “Make
the most of every moment. Before you know it, she’ll be graduating high school.” He couldn’t have been more right. The comforting thought is, I feel as if we’ve done that as best we can. As a family, we try to make the most of every moment together. If this is something you feel you need to do, it does take intentionality on your part. In life, we all go through

Horseshoe Rescue by Ann Zalokoski-Monroe
W
e are not a family with many traditions and those we have are subject to change at a moment's notice. One of our longest lasting traditions though began over a decade ago and, like some of life's most meaningful events, it began accidentally. I'm not sure why we decided to go to Fortescue that Father's Day, but we found ourselves there walking along the narrow beach. We were saddened to see hundreds of horseshoe crabs wedged into the crevices of the rock breakwater or upside-down on the beach. Unmoving, they lay, presumably dead, baking in the sun. I don't remember who first discovered that they were alive. Was some lion-hearted horseshoe crab still trying to maneuver his tail to get enough purchase in the sand to right himself or did one of us nudge one with our foot? I don't know, but the discovery that they were alive turned a casual amble down the beach into a full-on rescue mission.
We spent several hours flipping horseshoe crabs right-side up and digging through the rocks to pull out those that were impinged. My daughter, too young at the time to dig around in the rocks with the rusted metal rods sticking up at odd angles, would run each rescued horseshoe crab to the water's edge to save them the tiring journey across the beach and so that they
would immediately feel the water and know that they had a second chance. Each rescued horseshoe crab was exhilarating and we felt like small gods. It was hard to stop knowing that there were still many in need of help, but our movements became clumsier as we grew tired and the threat of a moved boulder smashing a thoughtlessly placed hand or foot was real. Even with
the knowledge that we didn't save everyone, we still felt triumphant. We had done a lot. That feeling brought us back year after year on Father's Day. We didn't keep track of how many we rescued and we didn't know that anyone else was doing it, that rescuing horseshoe crabs was "a thing". During a trip to the Wetlands Institute, my daughter and I found a fl yer for reTURN the Favor (http:// returnthefavornj.org), a New Jersey organization dedicated to rescuing horseshoe crabs, educating the public, and collecting data. Participating in their walks, which last from May until July 14th, has greatly added to what we've learned over the years. We’ll go back to doing the walks on our own, but now that we know what data to collect and to send it to reTURN the Favor, a new dimension has been added to our rescue missions. I encourage you to visit the reTURN the Favor website and participate in one of their listed walks, some of which allow you to walk beaches that are otherwise closed. You might even decide to make it a tradition.

n our kitchen growing up we had a top drawer where all the “stuff” was kept. Right above it was this nifty little pull-out cutting board.
It looked like a tiny drawer itself, but it was indeed a cutting board. It was where my dad would cut the dinner meat: roast beef, pork chops, etc. He had one of those old-school electric cutter’s, you would plug into the outlets and could change the blades. Back then that was very cool. It was also where the pot of potatoes would sit and wait to be mashed. The milk and butter would be dumped in and the hand masher would be in the drawer below it. It was dad’s job to do the mashing.

Happy Father’s Day Memories, What are Yours?
There was a technique to this and you ‘knew’ when the potatoes were just right to go into the bowl for dinner. These were dad’s “jobs” for dinner. Growing up, we had dinner nearly every night at 5 p.m. which consisted of a meat, mashed potatoes and a vegetable. Our two dogs Tippy and Taff y circled around like sharks waiting for table scraps. Dad would get home from work before 5 p.m. and discuss North Jersey’s horrible traffic. He would eat in his suit, minus the coat and tie. We never ate without saying grace and we were always
reminded not to lean back in our chairs. I was told to drink my milk and eat my meat. I am a vegetarian now and back then Tippy and Taff y made out like bandits. I did, however, love my Mom’s powdered iced tea mix in the Tupperware container. My dad loved his Pepsi. After his first sip, he would always say “aaahhhhhhhh!” He watched Warner Wolfe do the sportscast on TV in North Jersey and he would say,”Let’s Go to the Video Tape!” We grew up on the New York Giants, The New York Mets and the New York Yankees. My dad, being the exceptional sports fan that he was and is, once dropped his name in a contest entry box at a local car dealership for a chance to win the Yankees’ 1980 bullpen car. Yankee relief pitcher Ron Davis pulled my dad’s name out – my dad wasn’t even at the park that day. My dad couldn’t believe it when he found out, he remembers that he was shocked.

However, looking back, my dad was and is a lucky guy. Although my dad won this, it was business as usual for this published text book writer, Edison Science supervisor, PhD, elementary school principal and pro-bowler. That was just my dad. My dad instilled love for the space and stars in me. He once told me how he had dinner with the astronaut, Sally Ride, who also happened to be my childhood hero. He was casual about it when he got her autograph for me. My dad and I watched Haley’s Comet on the roof of the house together, my best “dad memory.” My over-achiever dad, this May, at 74, was in the senior pro-tour and hit his 50th year bowling. It was quite a mark for him. My dad said,”As long as my body holds up and I feel good, I’m going to keep going. I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s been really cool.” I must say, dad is pretty cool too. The Duprees Perform in Ventnor July 15 to Benefit Coach
T
he Duprees to perform at Benefit for Holy Spirit Coach The Duprees, a popular musical group of doo-wop style mixed with big band arrangements, which had a series of hit records in the early 1960s are coming to the area this summer. They will be playing July 15 to a full house at the St. James Memorial Hall in Ventnor. The Duprees concert is being held to benefit Coach Bill Walsh of Holy Spirit, recently diagnosed with ALS. Walsh grew up in Margate and works for the Recreation Department of Margate. Jim Riciotti, a chartered member of the Knights of Columbus with 38 years of service, is heading the event. “Life can change in a second,” Riciotti said. “It’s a nice feeling to know that you did something to help.” The band will likely play some of

the fan favorites. Some of the top hits from the 1960s, are “My Own True Love,” “You Belong to Me,” “Why Don’t You Believe Me,” and “Have You Heard.” The current bandmembers are Tony Testa, one of the original guitarists for The Duprees. He sings bass, baritone and falsetto. Phil Granito has been a member since 1987. Jimmy Spinelli joined in 1989. Tommy Petillo is the group’s fourth member who was the last lead singer to perform with the original Duprees, according Wikipedia. The event was coordinated by the Knights of Columbus council 7316. They are a 115-member organization based in Margate that do charitable works which have included food for families, Special Olympics and coats for kids. Skating for a Good Cause Skateboarders take to the park for a good cause in Ocean City raising funds for the Ocean City Humane Society this month.

hat do you get when you mix skateboards, music, and a dog? The answer is Skato with Kato II. On June 2, skateboarders of all ages got together to raise money for the Humane Society of Ocean City. The event was held at the Ocean City Skatepark with ideal weather conditions. Approximately 40 competitors ranging from ages 5 to 40-plus competed. The event was started in 2016 to raise money for “Kato,� a dog who needed an operation. After being adopted and with a little exercise, Kato’s condition improved. The surgery was not needed so all the proceeds went to the Humane Society of Ocean City instead. Kato has made an appearance both years to meet skaters and families. In addition to skateboarding, there was also some amazing music that got the crowd and skaters pumped up for the contest. The activities began with some punk rock
from The Sheckies, who also played the event last year. Next up was the skater-influenced band, “No Comply� – named after a popular skateboard trick. The show finished off with the band “Bad Year.� Good friends from Alex’s Lemonade Stand handled the refreshments. The spread included fresh fruit, snacks, assorted baked goods, drinks, and Randazzo’s Pizza. The Lemonade Crusade was also promoting their upcoming event on June 10in Ocean City called “Dancing for Hailey.� The contest went down with only a few minor scrapes and bruises. The crowd was entertained and enjoyed the show the skateboarder’s put on. Prizes were awarded to the top three placing competitors in each division. The sponsors included Peace of Wood, Ocean City NJ Surf School, 7 th Street Surf Shop, Heritage Surf Shop, Surfer’s Supplies, Downbeach Skate Co, Amphibia Apparel, The Collective Store.

Get Grilling and Enjoy Savory Summer Delights By Frank Gabriel
W
ith the official arrival of summer less than a fortnight away, we are pleased to announce the commencement of our very favorite cooking technique/time of year; grilling season. Now let’s start with some simple definitions. ‘Grilling’ refers to the rough-hewn, but delicate art of preparing meats, vegetables and even fruit via a hot metal grid suspended above glowing charcoal. It’s a throwback to man’s earliest eating methods, excepting that we’ve replaced mastodon and wooly mammoth with steaks and chops. And grilling is not, I repeat, definitively not barbecuing. That process, newer and eons more sophisticated, relies on hours-long

maintenance of smoky, low-heat temps and requires a level of skill beyond that of the average backyard cook. Any good grilling adventure must begin with proper preparation. Arrange your charcoal in twin pyramid shapes 60-40, or even 70-30 in fashion favoring one side of the cooking implement. This will provide you with hot spots to initially sear meats, along with cooler areas to transfer thick cuts for sizzling, thoroughly-cooked but juicy interiors. The same level of attention should be paid to your grill racks. They need to be thoroughly scraped, both before lighting your charcoal, and during the first several minutes of fire. Flames help remove any accumulated debris you were unable to dislodge at first.
Another important tool of the grill is a simple squirt bottle of water. This will serve to douse inevitable flame-ups occurring when melting fat drips down on the coals. That incendiary level of heat can turn a great piece of steak into sad shoe leather in less than a minute. Now, let’s talk about meat itself. About an hour prior to cooking, remove the meat from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temp. This counterintuitive method remedies one of the most common mistakes made by home cooks; tossing a piece of ice cold meat onto a fiery cooking apparatus. That is a sure and certain recipe for failure; as the top, bottom and edges will quickly caramelize. It’s actuallya scientific process, ‘The Maillard Reaction,’ while the center will remain cold and nearly raw. It is even more crucial with meat which has been marinated; you always want to remove excess moisture prior to grilling. About 15 minutes after lighting coals, flames will subside and you are officially ready. The embersthemselves will turn orangey/ash-grey at that moment,
providing a visual cue as well. Start thicker cuts like steak and pork on the hottest part of the grill, but don’t walk away. Grilling, like saut?ing, demands nearly constant attention to be truly successful. Ideally, the meat shouldn’t be turned for the first three to five minutes, depending on the depth of the cut. If it sticks to the grill, resist the urge to use force, you know when it is ready. And when you do, turn the meat only 45 degrees, the key to crafting that perfect steakhouse cross-hatch brand we’ve all come to know and love. Give that presentation side another three or so minutes, then flip and transfer meats more than one inch in thickness to the cooler spots to ensure proper finishing temps. We can’t in good conscience offer up a grilling feature and not talk about the joy of other ingredients. Seasonal vegetables like zucchini, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant are ideally suited for grilling on the lower-heat side, bien sur- and are much easier to prepare than meats and a lot less costly. With a simple marinate of olive oil, quality vinegar and herbs adorning them, these simple summer elements literally explode with intense flavors. So much so that whenever I grill, I try to make an extra batch of vegetables, since they are great cold the next day in either a salad, a sub roll or sauce. Finally, we’ve come to telling you about aforementioned fruit. Specifically, stone fruit, which is simply astonishing when slowly cooked on a cooling grill. I like to throw halved peaches, plums and especially nectarines on after removing the meat and veg of the evening. Start them skin-down, so they literally roast the soft fruit within, while you enjoy your main course. Return a half hour or so later and reverse for five minutes onto the cut side. Serve beneath a scoop of fruity or quality vanilla ice cream and you’ll complete your summers evening feast with a lovely crescendo.

Paddle For A Cause Raises More Than $110,000
A
TLANTIC CITY - More than 120 paddleboarders entered the water with their own goals on Saturday. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation also had a goal - to raise $100,000 at its 10th annual Paddle For A Cause presented by Curexa. “This was the most successful Paddle For A Cause and our most successful event in the history of the foundation. As pledges are still being collected, our projected amount raised is more than $110,000,” foundation president Mark Zappone of Linwood said. Ryan Oliver of Toms River broke the course record for the 22.5-mile race with a time of 3:58:02 to win the men’s stand up paddleboard 14 feet and shorter category. Dan Michaluk of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was the second overall finisher at 4:04:20 to win the men’s prone unlimited category. The course is a grueling ocean and bay paddleboard race that tests competitors mentally and physically. The event also included an eight-mile back bay race, four-mile and eight-mile fun paddles, team competitions and concluded with an after-party awards ceremony. All paddlers were required to fundraise $200 to participate with proceeds benefiting the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to financially assist people with cancer. After party funds are still being tallied. The top fundraisers were: Christine Cleary with $16,064, Jon Baker with $9,845, and Karen Grant with $9,101. Michael Hutchings, who was a top fundraiser last year, was $2 short at the time of the awards, but went on to raise a total of $9,269 over the weekend. The original seven participants were honored by Dean Randazzo of Atlantic City and race director Paul Giunta of Somers Point. Course designer Mike May of San Marcos, California, Todd DeSatnick of Cape May, Tom Forkin of Atlantic City, Chris Maher of Linwood and Mike Tkacz of Ventnor were presented with plaques and commemorative jackets. Gavin O’Donnell of New York and Frankie Walsh of Atlantic City were unable to attend. atsto Village is a national treasure. It is a living piece of history – a jewel preserved and maintained to allow visitorstoexperience what it was like to live in simpler times. The village has received praise and recognition for its authenticity and it is included in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
After all, there are the stuffed animals everywhere, handmade trinkets, and dime-store candies. They even carry local honey and handmade, fairtrade scarves. Summer Arts Camp for kids 6-12 There are also beautiful hardback copies of John E. Pierce’s “Heart of the Pines” – a massive, 904-page volume containing virtually everything there is to know about South Jersey’s past. Two comfy leather chairssit before this bastion of books – an open invitation for anyone to sit and stay awhile. The shop’s caretaker – a woman named Cindy – was able to share a few words with me between assisting visitors. I asked her one question – something I’d been pondering from the first time I visited this sanctuary: who could possibly be so well read, so knowledgeable, so equipped to create such a perfect selection? Did Howard Bloom take the time out of his busy schedule to cobble together this treasure trove? Cindy simply said, “Her name is Jeanie Ford. She now works for the Southern Region Office.”
Now, I don’t know who this Jeanie Ford is, but I’ll tell you one thing – she deserves a medal sent directly from the State Department. She has cultivated a definitive collection, something that needs to be seen to be believed. Don’t believe me? Fair enough. Next time you’re looking for something to do on your day off, take a ride out to Batsto. Tour the village, admire its authenticity, and amble through the museum. When you’re finished, be sure to stop in the museum shop and spend some time with the book collection. Financial Reality Fair Engages Students at Alder Ave School in EHT By Lindsay Kirkland
W
hat does this have to do with real life? That is the question many students wonder while learning new information day after day. On Friday, June 9at the Alder Avenue Middle School in Egg Harbor Township, it was clear the answer is everything. Students put their skills to the test by participating in a Financial Reality Fair, a hands-on learning experience brought to the school, at no cost, by Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union. The Financial Reality Fair was a fun, interactive one-day event to give the students a real-life budgeting lesson on understanding the importance of saving and spending wisely. After choosing a career, and finding their starting salary in that field, students receiveda personalized monthly budget worksheet. Then they role played going through “life” stopping by booths to purchase cars, rent homes, finance furniture, etc. Their goal was to stay within a budget and have money left in their pockets after paying all their bills for the month. The Reality Fair was held in the gym. After each class visited booths

We have a great school system and a community of people who really look out for each other. We all raise our kids together providing support and help to one another. During those fall and winter months my role is re-defined. I am the ultimate “Mr. Mom�. My work allows me the flexibility to be present for my kids. I am the room parent for both of my children, 7 years running, a member of the school board, assistant coach for sports and I walk my kids to and from school just about every day. I think the balance between running a business and raising kids lies in the way you set your priorities. My team is first. When my kids are grown I’m confident it won’t be material things they remember fondly. It’ll be the time we spent together and I’m fortunate in that I’ve never missed a moment. Q: What is your favorite activity to do with your family? A: I remember a time early in my career when my daughter, Piper, would sit on the countertop as I was checking customers out and she would bag the items for me. Now she’s 11 years old and not only works the register, but also handles fitting rooms and offers fashion advice! My little guy, Liam, is only 8 years old and is a glutton for everything the boardwalk has to offer. He comes to work with me and I pay him in arcade games and mini-golf. I can give him that freedom because Ocean City is a safe, family town. I know the merchants, the police, and many of the year-round and seasonal families in town.

he first annual Porchfest was a big hit last Saturday, as 37 homes hosted 92 bands. The community event brought many people together to enjoy live music. The day culminated with a beach concert featuring the party band, Funk Daddy.

W
ith the water warming up, it’s time to go play It’s nice to be back. Oh, it’s possible to surf all year in South Jersey, if you have the right gear. In fact, some of the best waves to hit the Jersey shore roll in through the fall and winter, most years. Some snowstorms have thrown perfect overhead waves at Ocean City’s First Street jetty, real tubes that draw the best surfers in the region out to play. But let’s face it, winter waves have to be very inviting before you want to start pulling on all that thick, rubbery gear. Yes, a dedicated surfer hits the water hundreds of days a year, rain, snow, wind or shine. For most mere mortals, though, the thought of not only squirming into all that neoprene, but also trying to get back out a couple hours later with numb fingers is enough to talk us out of a lot of surf days, unless the waves are calling loud and clear. Now we’re getting back into those days when you don’t even bother to check the surf report before loading up the boards. You just want to get out in the water, and if a ridable wave comes by, that’s a bonus. No numb toes, no five or six millimeters of heavy black material making your paddling miserable, and when you get home, the outside water is on. On a recent Saturday, the water at an out-or-the-way beach break was clear and clean, and getting up close to 60 degrees. That’s not exactly bathwater, but comfortable enough with a thin layer of protection, and cool enough that a couple of surfers had the sandbar to themselves. Closer to shore, some kids
worked the inside break with their Boogie boards until their lips turned blue, then headed in to the blanket. Some families were on the beach, enjoying the sunshine, and about a block away, surf fishermen cast deep for Mary Lee. Or possibly a couple of striped bass. It had been a while since we’d paddled out, and the friendly, kneeto waist-high waves seemed just perfect, doling out rides to the right and left, with an occasional larger set sneaking in, breaking farther back on the sandbar. That often meant getting swamped in the whitewater, but if you saw it coming and moved to the outside, you could get in position for a nice ride. But mostly, it was just splashing around, enjoying the sunshine and the cool of the water after a ride.
Osprey hunted nearby, possibly after the same striper as the fishermen, and all seemed right with the world. Eventually, a rising tide meant fewer and fewer waves actually broke. They’d swell up, and just roll by. It was time to head in, but shear stubbornness said I had to ride a wave in, even though the best waves of the day only took the board about eight to 10 feet past the end of the bar, so I’d be paddling either way. I wanted that last wave. It seemed pretty pointless. My partner was on the beach, ready to go, and even the tiny swells that had been coming by were dwindling. I should just give up, I thought. That trip back to the beach wasn’t going to get any shorter by waiting. Instead, I paddled a little further out, for no discernable reason. I prowled the out-
side, eyes peeled, feeling ridiculous. Then, there it was, one of the bigger waves of this small afternoon, set to close out over me. I got a slightly sloppy, heavy-on-thewhitewater ride, enough to feel satisfied. Except as the whitewater dissipated as the wave hit the deeper water past the sandbar, the board kept going. I had picked up enough speed for the wave to carry me along, and I made a long, slow right into a sweet rounded line, actually picking up more speed as the wave closed on the beach. It wasn’t until I saw little more than damp sand in front of the board that I bailed toward the deeper water. I stumbled in about ankle deep, and had managed not to grind the fin of my longboard into the sand in the process. All in all, I’ll call that a win.

Surfing Dogs Ride Ocean City Waves with Heart of Surfing Saturday By Lindsay Kirkland

igs can’t fly, but dogs can surf. Two professional surfing dogs are headed up the east coast from Florida to Ocean City where they will be surfing this Saturday and every Saturday with the Heart of Surfing organization. Heart of Surfing is a 501c3 nonprofi t organization that provides free surfi ng for families with autism and other special needs on 57th Street in Ocean City. They are kicking off their 4th season this Saturday with the Heart of Surfing Contest, a Surfing Rodeo hosted by the local surf club, NPN. The event is open to all surfers and registration begins at 11a.m.on 57th Street. At 2 p.m. the surfing dogs, Booker D and Onyx will be hitting the water and riding the waves with Heart of Surfing’s special needs surfers. Remove the clams from the pot using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a serving dish. Add the lemon juice to the pot, then whisk the butter into the sauce, a little at a time, until it becomes glossy and emulsified. Pour the sauce over the slams and serve immediately with lots of crusty Italian bread.

1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp coarsely cracked black peppercorns 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced 2 tsp Creole seasoning (see recipe below) 2 cloves garlic, minced 50 littleneck clams, scrubbed and rinsed of sand 2 lemons, juiced 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces Crusty Italian bread for dipping
INSTRUCTIONS Simmer the Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, black pepper, creole seasoning and garlic in a large pot over medium heat for about 2 minutes. Add the clams and toss to coat with the liquid. Cover, turn the heat to high, and cook until the clams just open about 6-8 minutes.
Serves 6-8 as an appetizer (Note from Nicole: I find commercial Creole seasonings to be too salty, especially when cooked in this dish, as the clams can be pretty salty themselves. Making your own is easyyou can control the amount of salt, and it keeps for quite a while in your pantry. Plus, you likely already have most of the ingredients on hand.)
