"T

he ants go marching two by two.." Every time I hear that song, I visualize the summer traffic on the Parkway. It all begins this Friday - the official kickoff to the summer season. Tourists will come by the thousands to enjoy our beaches, bays, and all that the islands have to offer.

I'll admit that it it can be a little annoying to be stuck in that traffic.

It can be frustrating to struggle to find a parking spot practically anywhere. But summer at the shore does bring a certain excitement. All of the seasonal businesses are open and booming. There is an expectant buzz in the air as local shops prepare

to welcome the influx of customers.

It's easy to take for granted the beauty that is so readily accessible to us at the shore. Whether we live on the islands or inland, we are fortunate to be close to the ocean and its extraordinary atmosphere all year long.

We are so fortunate to live where we

do. The thousands of visitors who flock our way for holiday weekends and summer getaways serve as a welcome reminder of that.

ony and Becky Jewell of Ventnor are not your typical parents. They love and fully support their sons’ passion for surfing. For that reason they didn’t just hire a nanny for their boys, but rather a surf nanny that took them surfing all day every day of the summer. Their boys Jackson, 11 and Cooper 9 had so much fun that the Jewells were to inspired to make the experience available to more families that live in and visit Ventnor beaches. They teamed up with Ventnor City Recreational Department to create Downbeach Surf Camp. “The city is very supportive and wants to showcase the beaches and great surfing community that exists in Ventnor,” says Becky Jewell.

The camp keeps an impressive 2:1 student to instructor ratio and includes photos of each session, so parents and groms can see growth and big smiles. Downbeach Surf Camp has three goals for the camp. nita Goldberg knows more than anyone the isolation that living with Alzheimer's can bring. Her husband, Herb Rudolph, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's six years ago and is now in the advanced stages of it.

One day while taking her husband to his neurologist appointment, Goldberg was flipping through a neurology magazine in the waiting room. Goldberg began her quest by searching for a venue for the group to gather. She was still looking, when she stumbled upon the answer.

While visiting her husband, who had recently moved into Spring Village of Galloway for assisted living, Goldberg shared her plans. They offered to host the program and provide the meals for the patients and their families and/or caregivers at no cost. Everything was now in place. The Alzheimer's Cafe began in March of this year. It is a free monthly gathering that welcomes all individuals with Alzheimer's, dementia or other memory loss and their families and/or caregivers to share a meal in a safe, supportive and engaging environment. It is the fourth Wednesday of each month from 11:30am to 1pm at Spring Village of Galloway. Reservations are required 609-404-1099.Â

Alzheimer's Cafe is not a support group, but rather a time for socialization in a supportive environment. "Everyone there 'gets it' so there is never anything to be embarrassed or upset about," explains Goldberg. She also recounts how two Alzheimer's patients hit it off last month and were talking about their experiences in the Navy together.

"Maybe they repeated themselves or didn't remember what was said just a few minutes ago. Thats okay. There are no judgements here," says Goldberg. She also reports that the caregivers often exchange phone numbers and are happy to connect with others in a similar situation.

aul St. James has a campground along the Mays Landing-Somers Point road, but he lives most of the year in Phoenix. Over the winter he was watching a lot of tiny-home TV shows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have an entire channel. Fifty percent of the time they sell vacuum cleaners and the other fifty percent of the time they show mini homes.â&#x20AC;?

He realized the tiny homes he saw on the shows were not dissimilar to some of the recreational vehicles in his campground. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I saw the tiny homes, I thought, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This is interesting. They are RVs.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got wheels and a hitch and all that.â&#x20AC;? His manager at the time got in touch with a tiny home builder in Pennsylvania â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Liberation Tiny Homes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and while St. James was still in Arizona the builder dropped off a tiny home that is now available to rent on his campground via AirBnB (search for the River Resort Tiny Home). The home was built for the shore, with an outdoor shower (as well as a full bathroom indoors).

St. James, 83, is a fan of the tiny home trend, but he understands that some people â&#x20AC;&#x201C; say, homebuilders and local government, are not

quite sold. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in part because if they are used holiday homes on a campground, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no property tax, he explains. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some resistance but it will be overcome in time.â&#x20AC;?

Resistance will be overcome because the market for tiny homes is so huge, St. James believes. From older people who no longer want to pay the taxes or heating bills for a large, empty house, to millennials and generation Z kids who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford the traditional move out of their parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; home, a tiny house makes sense. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This business â&#x20AC;&#x201C; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not on the ground floor. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not even in the basement. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the sub-basement. This is so new, this is very exciting â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this has got a long way to go.â&#x20AC;?

The aspect that St. James is particularly excited about is one that makes sense at the shore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The thing that I find exciting is, everybody would love to have a summer home. A vacation homeâ&#x20AC;Ś This is ideal.â&#x20AC;?

St. James is sticking around in Atlantic County to make some more improvements to his campground.

N.J. Surfing Legends Honored at Hall of Fame Ceremony

his may have been the first Hall of Fame gala in history where shorts, Hawaiian shirts, flipflops and baseball caps turned backwards seemed to be standard attire.

Essentially, the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame induction ceremony had the same vibe as a gigantic beach party, only it was inside.

In all, a sold-out crowd of 500 casually dressed surfing enthusiasts gathered Friday night at the Flanders Hotel in Ocean City to honor 14 inductees who were pioneers in a sport that has a rich history at the Jersey Shore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ocean City is a surf town â&#x20AC;&#x201C; flat out,â&#x20AC;?

Friedel, 65, who operates a string of 7th Street Surf Shops in town, and three other inductees have strong ties to Ocean City. They include Sandy Ordille, Brian Heritage and Tom McClaren.

Friedel, who enjoyed a stellar amateur surfing career when he was young, recalled his decision to open his first shop on the Boardwalk in 1986. Still there, the shop overlooks the 7th Street beach, the first place in Ocean City to be officially designated a surfing beach. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been an unbelievable ride,â&#x20AC;? Friedel declared of his longtime involvement in the sport. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been phenomenal. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still phenomenal.â&#x20AC;?

Ordille, who now lives in San Diego, Calif., was raised in Ocean City and graduated from Ocean City High School in 1973. The 62-year-old Ordille made her mark as a top womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surfer in the 1960s and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lived here for a long time, but this place is always in my heart,â&#x20AC;? After thanking his father and his wife, Jamie, for their support over the years, Heritage paid tribute to his 73-year-old mother, Barbara, the matriarch of the Heritage Surf & Sport enterprise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I talk about my family, I get emotional,â&#x20AC;? Heritage said, choking back tears.

Calling her a business pioneer who paved the way for others in the surfing industry, Heritage maintained that his mother should also be inducted into the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame.

Heritageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s words brought the crowd to its feet. His mother, sitting in the audience, was surrounded by well-wishers who shook her hand and hugged her.

The fourth Hall of Fame inductee with local ties, Tom McClaren, was a competitor surfer who later became a surfing judge and director. McClaren, 73, of Ocean City, has been involved with the Eastern Surfing Association for nearly 50 years.

While the ceremony was mainly about the 14 Hall of Fame inductees, the spotlight also focused a number of times on New Jerseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and Ocean Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x201C; surfing reputation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the impact our state has made,â&#x20AC;? said New Jersey surfing legend Cecil Lear, 86, of Belmar, Monmouth County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some great surfers we have.â&#x20AC;?

Townend, an Australian who now lives in California, said New Jersey is sometimes overlooked as an East Coast surfing mecca. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as well-known as it should be,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When people think about East Coast surfing, they usually mention Florida because so many surfing champions have come from there.â&#x20AC;?

Ocean City Happenings Fun starts Friday with Unlocking of Ocean and Business Persons Plunge ▶ KC and the Sunshine Band bills itself as a group that “creates instant happiness through music.”

Add two more ingredients – Ocean City and the start of summer – and you complete the recipe for a really great night.

The band makes its Ocean City debut on Sunday (May 28), and tickets are still available. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. on the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace).

The show promises to get people up and out of their seats in a happy start to summer in Ocean City. The Music Pier will be set up for a dance concert. Tickets are $75 and on sale at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice, at 609-399-6111 or in-person at the City Hall Welcome Center or the Roy Gillian Welcome Center on the Route 52 causeway. The Music Pier Box Office will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to show time on Sunday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FUN OPENS ON FRIDAY ▶ In a long-standing Ocean City tradition, city officials will turn a ceremonial key to open the ocean for the season at noon Friday, May 26.

That will clear the way for a newer tradition: The march (to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance”) of fully clothed business persons into the chilly Atlantic Ocean for the first swim of the summer. The Unlocking

Ocean City Olympian Even while visiting her hometown, Tomlin maintains a rigorous training schedule. Before meeting at 11am, she had already ran 45 minutes and biked for 2 hours. Her training is a full time job and commands 8 hours a day. In a few days she will be traveling to Australia to meet with her training group. Later this year, she will also be training in Spain. “I’ve gotten to travel the world and see it from different perspectives like from the water and biking. I’ve gotten to meet different

cean City native Renee Tomlin is a triathlon national team member currently training for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

She is a 2006 graduate of Ocean City High school and was a standout in both Track and Field and Swim team. Tomlin recieved a scholarship to Georgetown University where she recieved her masters degree in linquistics in 2013.

We caught up with Tomlin while she was home visiting her mom who

Karen Pratz taught me how to swim when I was 3 years old,” shares Tomlin.

New Dining in Downbeach

e’ve visited a pair of new Downbeach eating establishments recently and wanted to share our thoughts and opinions.

We’ll start in Ventnor at La Padella.

Located within a block housing lovely bakery/coffee shop Ventnor No. 7311, Juicery Greens and Grains and personal favorite BYOB Stella, this has become a sort of mini-restaurant row. La Padella’s storefront has similarly seen a lot in the past decade; having formerly housed Gertrude’s, LoBianco Coastal Cuisine and Sea Ayre restaurants. Any recollection of those establishments will fade upon entry here.

New ownership- more about them later- obviously spent lots of time, energy and money crafting a pretty, cosmopolitan ambiance in concert with this urban setting.

Food was well above average Italian-American cuisine, which could become excellent with a few tweaks and increased attention to detail.

Our apps began with my dining partner’s eye-pleasing carciofi all romano- grilled Roman artichokes- drizzled with basil oil. The plate’s composition was the equal of this tasty starter’s flavor and sexy looks.

Accented by thin slices of prosciutto di Parma and shaved grana padana cheese, this was a top-shelf opening salvo. However, my choice, steamed clams with garlic and oil, needed some work.

Each and every bivalve mollusk of the dozen, although nicely seasoned, delivered a cringe-inducing level of sandy grit, accumulating at the bottom of the serving bowl as well.

Additionally, one clam was cracked in half and another never opened at all, a real restaurant no-no.

In between our courses we had an opportunity to chat with our server about the new chef/owner, Tony Hoda. This twenty-something Albanian native, in addition to functioning as chef, performed the extensive construction renovations himself.

Pretty heady stuff for a kid barely out of high school.

Entrees were both superior in quality, particularly an amazing nightly addition of crab ravioli.

We learned to make ‘ravs’ five decades ago in our grandmother’s kitchen, so standards are ridiculously-high, almost-unachievable.

These seven large discs, delicate and ethereal as spring flowers, just about blew us away.

Simply put some of the very finest stuffed pastas we’ve ever encountered.

And yes, that includes Mom-Mom’s and anything during multiple trips to Italy.

Our only issue; the surprising $38 price tag, which wasn’t recited along with along with descriptions of specials, and should always be in the future.

Again, like issues with those clams, this is all part of a nascent restaurant’s learning curve.

From our initial impression, La Padellameaning “the pan” in Italian- is going to very successful here.

A few blocks further south in Margate, Done, an upscale take-out facility, opened late last year.

‘Done’- a truly great food biz name if I ever heard one- comes with pedigree, belonging to Tomatoes’ dynamic owners, husband-and-wife Karen (nee Sherman) and Carmen Rone.

large cold cases of beautifully-prepared food to take out.

On the day we ventured in Done vended us an outstanding whole grain salad, seasonal asparagus, grilled colossal shrimp and roasted Brussels sprouts. While the sprouts could have used a few more minutes of heat, other items were exemplary, especially the lighter-than-air grains- a mix of quinoa and rice, we’re guessing- gently essenced by olive oil and lemon.

On a second trip, we delighted in roasted cippolini onions, quinoa salad and BBQ glazed turkey meatloaf.

Whatever you opt for, do not skip desserts, as they are the personal provenance of Karen Rone, and therefore uniformly excellent. Presented as evidence; a superlative baked good called hummingbird cake, a luscious combination of coconut, pineapple and banana which ate like a tropical twist on carrot cake.

The concept here reminds one of an old Atlantic County business called ‘Tasty Ladle’ which longtime residents will surely recall from a pair of Tilton Road locations.

It’s truly a brilliant idea; for thirty or forty bucks you can sample, tapas-style, close to a half dozen different items, each crafted with great care.

omers Point â&#x20AC;&#x201C; More than 65 volunteers descended on Patcong Creek on May 21 for the third annual Assault on Patcong Creek Clean-Up effort.

The Patcong Creek Foundation launched this environmental initiative to encouraging the community to help keep regional waterways and crabbing spots clean. The ACUA, Linwood Environmental Commission and the Somers Point Green Team have partnered with the Patcong Creek Foundation since 2015 in the annual Patcong Creek Clean Up effort. Participants worked together to clean up debris from the marshes around the creek, and generously use their boats to transport larger debris back to the mainland for proper disposal. Area officials including Somers Point Mayor Jack Glasser, Atlantic County Sheriff Frank Balles, Atlantic County Freeholders Maureen Kern and John Carman, and Somers Point City Councilmen Sean McGuigan and James Toto, also helped to remove and properly dispose of more than two tons of debris found in the marshes.

The Patcong Creek Foundation, a nonprofit organization that looks to help the local environment through education and environmental initiatives, grew out of the successes accrued by the annual Somers Point Assault on Patcong Creek Crabbing

Coordinators of the crabbing tournament formed the Foundation in 2014 to handle the responsibilities that came along with the growing eventâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;most importantly the rapidly increasing amount of funds raised through donations and sponsorships.

Initially intended to simply cover the expenses of the tournament, support began to exceed those expenses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were growing, but we needed to grow in a responsible manner. We were getting so large, we needed to form a corporation to handle all of the duties in an organized fashion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thus the formation of this Foundation,â&#x20AC;? said Ron Meischker, founder of the event and Somers Pointâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Harbormaster.

Utilizing this excess funds for environmental initiatives, the Patcong Creek

Foundation also supports educational programs in the Somers Point School District. In 2016, Assault on Patcong Creek donated $500 to the Great Egg Harbor River Council to assist with the educational outreach initiative. The tournament committee also engages in its own educational initiatives and in environmental clean-up efforts. Assault on Patcong Creek has pledged $1,500 to the Great Egg Harbor River Council for 2017.

he New Jersey Korean War Veterans Memorial was created to ensure that future generations remember and honor the pride and dedication of those who served, the legacy they continued, and the freedom they preserved. It helps heal the spiritual and psychological wounds suffered by the Korean War veterans, their families and friends. Part of the healing process is to understand Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement in that struggle, what it accomplished, and the contribution of our men and women who served.

The memorial features a 12-foot high statue of The Mourning Soldier clutching dog tags. A group of soldiers under fire emerges through a sheet of water just to his left. On the back wall of the memorial,

the vastly different living conditions in the North with those of the South. Today it is easy to see that South Korea could not have achieved the prosperity and fulfillment it enjoys if it had been under the kind of repressive government that has tightly gripped North Korea since that time.

However painful, frustrating and unsatisfactory the Korean War may have been for Americans, it secured an important victory for democracy in South Korea.

aving already acquainted you with the process of seed starting and fertilization, this issue’s column will deal with the specifics of how to manage your plants.

Beginning with the process of transplanting, which can be enormous shock to the system of tender foliage.

When moving seedlings to larger digs, turn their containers over while gently applying pressure to the bottom in order to loosen roots, never actually pulling on young plants themselves.

Once free, immediately place them in a shallow hole in the larger pot.

Add potting soil to provide structural integrity, then enough water to dampen, but not thoroughly soak the soil.

Some plants, especially tomatoes and peppers, should be staked as soon as possible, in order to manage their growth.

We have an unusual, secret-agent tool designed for just this very purpose; wornout pantyhose.

You read correctly.

Cut in to wide, thin strips, this clingy, but flexible material provides just the right level of support.

What it won’t do is cut into the flesh of, or even break, stems of plants as they sway in the mercurial breezes of spring and summer in coastal southern New Jersey.

It’s also easy to remove and adjust as your plants grow taller.

This summer, my garden features a wide variety of herbs, but most notable, four different kinds of basil.

There is a reason why this healthful, fragrant green is known as ‘The King of Herbs.’

In fact, the word ‘basil’ derives from the Greek language, basilikón photon, meaning “royal/kingly plant”.

(Those who know me should be having a good chuckle right about….now.)

With hundreds of varieties, you should be able to locate at least two or three for yourself.

Pictured with this feature are my 2017 quartet; Genovese (aka ‘Sweet’) plus purple, Royal Thai (often confused with purple,

incorrectly) and a newer varietal grown from seed, called ‘Lemonade.’

Each possesses slightly different flavor profiles, making them ideally suited for creative cookery, especially raw in salads or to finish a recipe.

The key to growing basil is simple, quality, well-drained soil and sparing water.

Not the hardiest of plants, they require a gentle touch early on, but that extra work will be rewarded with a bounteous harvest come July, August and September.

Another herb I’m growing in multiples this season is thyme.

Absolutely essential for meats, sauces, fish and vegetables, thyme is a sturdy, quick-grower which tends to monopolize space given.

Unlike basil, it prefers more water, growing into wide, Bonsai-like bushes.

Our choices this year were English (or ‘Common’) and lemon but you will also find types called silver, orange and creeping (for the aforementioned tendency to spread.)

Thyme prefers hot, dry conditions and full exposure to bright sunlight.

Among the easiest herbs to cultivate is parsley.

Like most chefs, we prefer the broadleafed Italian type, utilizing it in sauces, pesto and universally with all seafood.

(For us, a most essential ingredient in quality tuna salad, removing any hint of fishiness.)

Since parsley grows so profusely, we like to keep it in long shallow planters and harvest frequently, typically on a daily basis.

Rosemary, another personal favorite, requires almost as much careful attention as basil.

Although it can survive throughout winter, it’s extremely easy to harm by overwatering or not exposing to enough sunshine.

A roster of other inhabitants of our garden bower this year will include dill, wonderful with potatoes, chicken and fish, spearmint, for fruit salads and teas, pineapple sage, an unusual aromatic hybrid that seems to repel flying insects, plus chives and spring onions.

Armed with even a few of this dizzying palette of tastes, colors and essences, you will be well underway.

Senior Moments A Seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

I Since two important holidays, Mothersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day and Memorial Day fall in the month of May, I thought it appropriate to publish an interview I conducted with my mother, Yetta. My mother was living in London during the Blitz of World War II. The Blitz was a bombing campaign where German planes attacked British cities every day and night for eleven weeks starting in September 1940. Yetta was 17 years old at the time.

That experience helped shape the strong independent woman she became and also reminded me that however difficult lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenges can be, at least I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to fear bombs falling from the sky. My mother resided in Margate for over 50 years and sadly passed away on January 10, 2010.

She rented the middle floor since we had three floors but once she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rent it. She gave it to refugees. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how it came about but we had a refugee, he was an opera singer. He gave us tickets to the Wigmore Hall in the West End. He stayed for a few weeks then he got is visa to go to America. Then we had a young woman with twin boys that were about 16. Her husband was in California waiting for her to come over.

He was a film producer. She stayed with us for a few weeks until her visa came through. Then we had a Russian lady stay until her visa came through but Mum never took any money from them. My room on the third floor was by a flat roof and you could go out and walk across the roof. It was a tar roof.

I had a bucket of sand and a bucket of

water in case there was a fire. I used to hear the planes go over and I could hear the shrapnel falling on the roof. When I got up in the morning I could never find anything. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if they got imbedded in the roof. I never found a piece of shrapnel all through the war, not one piece.

I used to walk home from work when I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother to wait for the bus. I could hear the guns but I could never see anything. But you could hear the shrapnel falling in the street. How stupid we were! We just walked around. You never think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be you. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why they take young people into the service today. They have no fear. Down the street was Alan, a boy I had known since I moved there when I was about 9 years old. I had a Cracker Jacks box and there was a ring in there. So we were engaged. He lived about four houses down. His father had a business there. He was a tailor and a cleaner. Alan volunteered as a warden during the Blitz. He was about 18 years old then and as warden, he pulled the bodies out of buildings after a bombing. Dad, who wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually a warden, was on duty one night to

help. About 8 houses up the street there was an empty shop so it was set up as a sort of headquarters for the wardens. That night he got sick and called in and said they had to replace him he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work. The place got a direct hit and we knew that everyone there had it. We couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe it.

When it was very bad and that was most of the time, you just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to bed. You could hear the air raid sirens constantly anti aircraft guns and planes flying around all night. We werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t near anything military but sometimes, planes that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drop their bombs on targets for whatever reason would drop them on the way back from London. In the end, they (Germans) didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care if it was military they just wanted to flatten all of London for no apparent reason whatsoever. We had an Anderson shelter in the back yard made of corrugated metal halfway above ground and halfway below ground. It was always full of water!

My dad said if we go in there we could be buried alive. This was really absurd when I think about it. Finally, my dad said we have to go to a shelter.

How a Two Block Move Saved Lucy

ithout Lucy the Elephant’s current home in Margate, she wouldn’t be America’s oldest roadside tourist attraction.

Lucy was scheduled for demolition, but was given a second chance

by Margate residents Ed and Silvia Carpenter. The couple founded the Save Lucy Committee and attained rights her home at her current location, two blocks south of her former spot.

Lucy – built in 1881 and named “Elephant Bazaar” – had fallen victim to a business deal where her original home was sold for land development. It was originally owned by Lucy’s designer James V. Lafferty Jr., who owned most of South Atlantic City’s land.

Lafferty originally developed Lucy as a method to increase tourism in South Atlantic City, now Margate City. With tourist piling into trains and headed to Atlantic City, Lafferty wanted a way to advertise real estate.

After spending roughly $36 thousand on construction, Lucy was a success.

She was eventually sold to the Gerston Family who kept the elephant open to visitors. With the start of a new decade, Lucy had gotten into trouble.

Lucy had been deemed unsafe for tourism in 1962 because of her corroding structure. Atlantic City

had also been experiencing a decline in tourism, do to increase travel by airplane.

“They no longer had to come by car to Atlantic City,” said Executive Director Richard Helfant. “They could fly all over, and Atlantic City started on the decline. And along with it went everything else that depends on tourism.”

In 1969, the Gertson’s decided to sell Lucy’s location to allow a developer to build a high-rise condominium.

With the deal came Lucy’s scheduled demolition.

That’s when the Carpenters stepped in to save Margate’s world famous icon. With the help of other residents, fund raising events such as bake sales raised enough money to keep Lucy at the Jersey Shore.

“They had an engineering study done to determine if Lucy would survive the move, and they actually didn’t think she would,” said Helfant. “They told the committee that once it went off the curb, it would just collapse to the ground.”

“They [volunteers] had to coordinate with the three utility companies to drop the power lines along Atlantic Ave, because Lucy’s taller than them,” Helfant added.

On Jul 20, 1970, the mission was a success as Lucy made it safely to her new home on Atlantic Ave. Doubters in the community were stunned as they crowded the street as Margate’s famous skyscraper defied all odds.

Since her move, Lucy has been an ongoing restoration project. She

The organization earned status as a 501C3 non-profit organization, meaning it could collect money for fundraising without being taxed.

Going door to door, volunteers raised the amount of money needed to cover Lucy’s move. Helfant remembers participating in bake sales for Lucy as a middle-school student.

His teacher Julius Woods had been a member of the Save Lucy Committee and encouraged him to participate in Lucy’s fundraisers.

With the funds, the Mullin & Renalli Moving Company from Mount Holly, NJ decided to take on the risky task. The company was the only one in the Northeast willing to conduct

Another project involved fixing corrosion in Lucy’s interior after air-condition unit leaked through the interior.

Margaret Westfield Lucy’s Restoration Architect, recalls being called into action mend Lucy’s tail after a windstorm.

“A tent set up for a wedding got picked up in a windstorm and bashed into her tail,” said Westfield. “So, she had a bandage on the back of her tail until we had that fixed.”

Helfant says that Lucy continues to attract visitors and that her popularity continues to grow every year. She will turn 136-years-old come this July.

It’s been said that you are the average of the five people who are closest to you. Now that can be a good thing or a not so good thing. So, this week as you look at where you are on your growth journey, whether it be personal or professional, leadership or otherwise, ask this question; Who do I ‘hang with’? It’s a fact, we are influenced by and we ourselves influence those closest to us.

It comes down to intentionality.

Like so many things in life and in your growth journey, what you are intentional about, you see come to pass. So, if you want to become more disciplined, find someone you respect or admire who is disciplined. If you

want to become a more effective leader, find a leader who is where you want to be.

It’s really not that complicated.

But you do have to be intentional. If you want positivity in your life, surround yourself with positive people.

But be aware that the opposite is true. If the people who are closest to you are dragging you down, you’re going to feel it in your own life. It will be like a negative tug that keeps you from getting where you want to go.

If you’re reading this and realize you have to make a shift, realize that doesn’t have to happen overnight.

In fact, it probably can’t. But you to have intentionally make choices about who you allow close to you.

Maybe the friends you have today, shouldn’t necessarily be the friends you are closest to tomorrow.

Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying you want to use people for your own personal gain or disregard a friendship because someone doesn’t fit in with where you want to go. But what I am encouraging you with is to be aware of those you allow closest to you.

It’s a concept that goes back as far as the Bible where we are encouraged that iron sharpens iron.

You want to be stronger in an area?

Surround yourself with people who build you up, not tear you down. Get around those who are heading on the same positive path you are headed down.

You are, I am the average of the 5 people closest to us. Take a reality check this week. It should help you as you look to reach that goal or dream you’re hoping to achieve.

Getting to Ocean City It’s probable that pirates took good advantage of the resources that Pecks’ Beach, present-day Ocean City, afforded them. During the Golden Age of Pirates, which lasted roughly from 1690-1710, Peck’s Beach was uninhabited, remote, inhospitable to humans and rife with sand dunes that easily accommodated treasure for the burying. One researcher says that this barrier island was actually favored by pirates. No documentation however, was provided.

Getting to Strathmere and Sea Isle City The path of exploration for this area came from the whalers and fishermen from Southampton Long Island, NY. Around 1685, John and Peter Corson kept going after arriving at the inlet named after them and spent their first winter in a cave dug out of a bank of a creek. It is located adjacent to the Garden State Parkway and is called Cellar Creek. The presence of whalers is noted in Whale Creek and Whaler’s Channel of he inlet.

pirate captain John Stone who took refuge here in the back bay from a strong storm at sea.

Getting to the Wildwoods One contemporary observer says that the Native Americans came to the shore for the same reason we do, today, i.e. -to make money. Among British mariners of the times the island that now is home to the wildwoods was called “Five -Mile Beach.”

It includes a beautifully preserved piece of Jersey Shore called “Diamond Beach.” That name alludes to the preponderance of quartz stones that are found there. These can be easily polished and many a tourist has hunted them around the ape. There is a trophy size example at the Cape May County Museum that weighs in at a whopping 1,800 karats. The first residents of the cape were the Kechemeche band of Native Americans.

They believed that the stones were supernatural. They could influence a person’s well-being and bring good fortune. The stones were exchanged as symbols of friendship.

Roadside Rescuers

W

ith busy summer traffic soon on it’s way to Margate, the tires on the Margate Causeway can be a predator to one of New Jersey’s wetlands inhabitants, the Diamondback Terrapin Turtle.

The Margate Terrapin Rescue Project has taken action to prevent turtles from crossing the road and run over by motorists while nesting near the causeway. The volunteer organization has laid a roughly 2-mile barrier along both sides of the Margate Causeway, along with signs alerting drivers to stay alert for turtles crossing the road.

The most recent installation was on May 20. Volunteers worked to perform a marsh clean-up, along with general maintenance on sections of the barrier. The barrier separates the road and marshlands, so that Terrapin Turtles don’t put themselves in harm’s way.

Roughly 114 pregnant turtles are estimated to be killed during the summer, leading to about 1,100 deaths in ten years according the organization’s Facebook page. Accidental drownings of turtles in crab traps are also a contributor of accidental turtle deaths.

The barrier has been a success, as the group has retrieved new data showing a major decrease in accidental turtle deaths on the causeway.

Coordinator Kimberly Lull says Terrapin Turtles are a viable resource to the environment when controlling the Periwinkle Snail population, which is why the species is important to protect. “If you let that [Periwinkle] population grow, the Periwinkle will eat all of the grasses,” said Lull. “Then you start to get more mudflats instead of saltmarsh, and that means more erosion.” Terrapins are forced to nest inland during summer because onshore development has lessened the count of viable sand dunes. With the lack of available sand dunes, the Terrapins are forced to seek alternative sources.

The group of volunteers often don’t typically meet to discuss their plans.

Quick connection via cellphone allows the group to stay up-to-date with needs along the causeway.

The groups coordinators often find volunteers, and text them on days they are needed to patrol the causeway for stranded turtles. Lull will coordinate a schedule depending on everyone’s availability. Sometimes, patrolling the causeway is all that can be done.

Volunteer Jessie Marienski says the Wetlands Institute collaborates with the rescue project when it comes to saving unhatched eggs. If eggs are still attached to dead female turtles, the eggs will be salvaged for an incubator.

The Terrapin’s sex depends on temperature, so eggs incubated at 90 degrees will hatch as female offspring. This way, the new female turtle makes up for the loss of her mother. “You can kind of play God a bit and try to replace them,” Marienski said.

If you see a turtle crossing the road, simply pull over, pick it up, and move it across the road in the direction it was heading, Lull says. Don’t bring the turtle back to the side of the road where it came from, because it was most likely trying to cross the road on purpose. Bringing the turtle back to its original spot may prompt it to cross again. Lull doesn’t advise putting hands near their face, but says they rarely bite.

The barrier’s installation doesn’t mean that the group’s job is done. Lull says that the organization works with the community to spread awareness of the ongoing issue. She says she often sees young kids taking interest in the animal’s preservation. “The best thing I think I’ve gotten is to teach people about Terrapins and really watching them engage in science,” said Lull.

The Margate Terrapin Rescue Project are always looking for volunteers to grow the program, and expand their patrols to other roads in Margate. Anyone interested can reach them via Facebook.

CEDAR PLANK SALMON

hat does grilling mean to you? If it only means hot dogs and hamburgers, it’s time to expand your horizons. This time of year I rarely turn on my oven because I much prefer grilling. Even though my family doesn’t eat meat, we still grill plenty of delicious food. Here are some of my favorite things to cook on the grill.

INGREDIENTS ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

FISH Have you ever tried fish cooked on a cedar plank? It’s a game changer that will transform how you grill fish. Cedar planks are sold in most supermarkets or can be purchased online. You need to soak them for a few hours in liquid. I like soaking mine in cider vinegar. Mix together a basic marinade or buy one. Marinate the fish for 1-2 hours before turning your grill to medium. Place the plank on the grill and add the fish on top of the plank. Close the lid and let the fish cook for 12-20 minutes, depending on how well done you like your fish. The fish will be moist and flavorful from the plank and marinade.

VEGETABLES Get creative with your vegetables!

look for vegetables that would be good on the grill. Some of my favorites to grill are zucchini, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms and cauliflower.

Brush the vegetables with some olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite seasoning. Vegetables cook quickly on the grill and are great as a main course or on the side.

FRUIT If you’ve never tried grilled peaches, get your grill ready when peaches are in season in July. They

make for a perfect dessert. I also like grilled peaches with goat cheese in a salad or in quesadillas along with grilled corn. Other fruits that can be grilled are pineapple, bananas and fi gs.

INSTRUCTIONS Soak planks in cider vinegar (or water or white wine) for at least 2 hours before grilling.

Prepare marinade by combining vegetable oil through garlic in a bowl and let fish marinate for an hour before grilling.

Preheat an outdoor grill to about 350. Put cedar planks on the grates. Lay salmon on top of grates and lower grill lid. After about 15 minutes check fish for doneness by using a fork. You want it to be flaky but not overdone. Remove planks from grill and serve.

ther than going to a farmer’s field yourself, the best way to get fresh produce is to stop at a farmers market. Farmers markets pop up like summer staples Jersey corn and Jersey tomatoes in the spring and summer.

In addition to produce, you can purchase the freshest breads, jams and jellies, honey and other goodies, be done with your shopping early and hit the beach by the afternoon.

In fact, some of the farmers markets are literally steps from the beach, such as Sea Isle City’s market.

There’s also no shortage of farmers markets in the mainland communities scattered throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties. Organizers say it’s a great way to promote healthy eating, and a way for the community to meet local farmers and shop where they live. New Jersey’s official slogan is the Garden State and if there is any doubt about that, all anyone has to do is to visit their local farmers market.

While it’s not true that the human body replaces itself entirely every seven years due to cell regeneration (brain cells, for example, live with us for most of our lives), most of our cells aren’t around for very long before dying and being replaced. (Source: Benjamin Radford, “Does the Human Body Really Replace Itself Every 7 Years?,” www.LiveScience.com) Just as our bodies continually replace old cells with new ones, it is vital for us to replace the old habits, behaviors, and beliefs that no longer serve us. For example: when I was in college, it was a common practice for me to sleep 3 or 4 hours a night (less during finals week) and still be a fully functioning human the next day. If I only get 3 hours of sleep these days, I am grumpy, unproductive, and only semi-human. This behavior doesn’t work for me anymore.

Here’s a less dramatic example.

The Elegant Root – my content creation and digital marketing business – just had its first birthday in April.

Starting a business was uncharted territory for me, and my first year was full of trial and error and hands-on mistakes and learning. This year has offered me a ton of perspective on my own brand identity – specifically, how I want to share my message and the audience I want to reach.

Last night, I updated my website.

I didn’t change one or two images or shift my font sizes. I replaced the en-

tire thing. This change reflects a new awareness of my brand and myself.

I needed that year of uncertainty – the awkward phase complete with its growing pains – to get where I am now. Change is a little scary, but scary isn’t bad. Rather, scary indicates a point of newness and growth. It’s usually not easy, but it’s always important.

There is a Buddhist parable about a man who comes to a river while walking in the forest. In order to get across the river, he gathers branches and sticks and makes a raft. After he gets to the other side, he has a decision to make. Will he carry the raft with him, in anticipation of encountering another river at some point in his journey? Or will he discard the raft? Ultimately, he leaves it behind.

The raft served its purpose, but if the man continued to carry it on his back, it would only weigh him down. He had the intelligence and the skillset to make the raft in the first place. If he were to find a new river, he would certainly have the resources to make a new one, better suited to the new river.

What are you carrying with you that you don’t need anymore? Take a cue from your biology: shed your old cells. Make room to create something brand new.
