More Fox Sightings in Ocean City

I

t's not a cat or dog, it's a young red fox in a Southend neighborhood last week. The wild animals have also been making their way on the boardwalk and mingling with the crowds lined up outside Brown's restaurant in city’s Northend.

Officials believe the fox pups, born just a couple months ago and part of a growing fox population on this barrier island, are coming from a nearby den and they’ve gotten used to people giving them handouts. Experts say they know of five active fox dens in Ocean City but state guidelines forbid them from moving the animals off the island. “We can relocate them in Ocean City,” said Bill Hollingsworth from the Humane Society of Ocean City. “So we would put them in an area that doesn’t have an active den already and there’s no population around. We need the people to stop feeding them. We want them to get back into the wild.”

Thanks, Mom!

is not reserved solely for the sad moments. My kids’ joys and smiles warm my heart. Their accomplishments and milestones make me prouder than I ever thought I could be. I love when they come to visit and I treasure the moments when we are all together. It’s true what they say: no one will ever love you like your mother. Before I became a mom, I thought I knew all about unconditional love. When I held my oldest child for the first time, I experienced a new depth of love that I couldn’t have fathomed before. This love was stronger, more protective, and came with a fierce loyalty like no other. No one supports, encourages, or dreams for me more than my mom. Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom and to all the Moms, Grandmoms, and Moms-to-be. Your love makes all the difference in the world and you are the glue that holds our families and our communities together. Thank you for everything.

From the Editor

“I

t’s a boy!””It’s a girl!” Each time a baby is born, a mother is born too. She may look the same on the outside, but on the inside, she is completely changed. Her baby is the brand new owner of her heart. The mother will discover strengths she didn’t know she had and fears she never knew existed. Like all moms, I put my children’s needs before anything else. When they were young, their feelings informed my own feelings. When they felt well, I felt well. When they were sick, sad, or distressed, my heart hurt in response. I expected this to happen when my kids were little. What’s surprised me in recent years is the fact that this powerful empathy never ends. My daughters are in college now. If they are struggling with disappointments or challenging relationships, I feel their sorrows and want to comfort them. When my autistic son is stuck in repetitive phrases or

can’t express himself effectively, I feel his frustration and anguish. My knee jerk reaction has always been to rescue them. This task was much easier when I could cure the sadness and anxiety by fixing Barbie’s hair or losing the next game of checkers. I’ve learned now that I can’t rescue my children; in fact, that’s not even my job. All I can do--all I should do--is be there for them, listen actively, and empathize. My mom has modeled this for me throughout my entire life. When I am sad or struggling with my own kids, she seems to feel it equally, if not more. The good news is that empathy

Crouch is proud to be the Events Coordinator for the Atlantic City Gentlemen of the Shore Motorcycle Club. They are a diverse group of 20 members that was founded in 2004. They help the community in many ways such as giving out italian water

ice at National Night Out, parades, motor cycle escorts for funerals, and toy donations. One of their largest events, Autism Fun Day, is held every April for special needs children. Recently, on April 28th, 500 kids were treated to a full day of fun at Shellum Field in Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Gentlemen of the Shore Motorcycle Club partnered with the Atlantic City School District and the city to create one perfect and fun day for kids with special needs. Blow-up Bounce Houses and slides, face painting, photos on motorcycles, Atlantic City Police Department dog demonstration, Atlantic City Fire Department trucks and fire safety hats, cotton candy, snow cones and a full lunch were just some of the highlights. This was the 6th and largest Autism Fun Day and every year it has grown. “This event is really important,” says Crouch “Because some of these kids cannot participate in field trips or other recreational programs that typical kids do. They need an opportunity to have a fun day like everyone else.” Crouch recounts the gratitude one mom expressed to him the very first year of year of the event. She stopped him and said “Thank you for what you’ve done. This is the first time I’ve seen my son smile like that in 6 months.” Although Crouch has spent his life volunteering with kids, he says those words really touched him like no other and he is very committed to making this possible for special needs kids every April. Crouch is a father to 3 beautiful daughters and a grandfather also. In his spare time he enjoys motorcycle riding and football. He is engaged to Sharifa Berry and is planning a wedding for next year. “I am blessed,” says Crouch “ I have had some situations that could have gotten me off track, but I just do the right thing and try to help people.”

A Fitness Journey

“I

try my best to help people without spending a lot money because I was that girl,” says Kristen Johnson. Johnson is a fitness trainer and with her partner, Sterling Duncan, she runs Phit45, a popular fitness training program that runs 6 days a week out of Atilis Gym in Egg Harbor Township. Johnson is thin, has muscles everywhere and has competed in bodybuilding competitions. You would never suspect that Johnson once struggled with her own weight and has lost 100 lbs herself. Johnson is a 2005 graduate of Charter Tech. She married shortly after high school and it was during her first pregnancy, that she gained 80 lbs. That weight stayed on for 7 years. Johnson shares that it made her feel very self conscious and she would hide from the camera and even her own reflection in the mirror. In 2014, Johnson was ready to make a change. It was the first time she had faced the scale in years and she was shocked at how heavy she had gotten. Johnson very more determined to drop the weight and become fit. “Making the change was hard as hell,” said Johnson “But it was harder to be uncomfortable in my own body.” “ It can also be hard to go to the gym

especially for the people that need it the most,” says Johnson. Some people call it “gymitation” which is the word used to describe a common feeling of intimidation people have when beginning a fitness program. Johnson reflects upon her journey and says”I still identify with the heavy set girl in the back of the class. That is why I always reach out to encourage her.” Johnson, through Phit 45 lost the weight and more importantly, she gained strength, health and confidence. She teamed up with Sterling Duncan and they now run Phit 45 together. Johnson also trains 22 clients out of her Somers Point home in addition to Phit45 six days a week. One of her clients, Bonnie Miller said “My biggest problem has always been consistency and with her it is no longer my issue.... my biggest hurdle is gone because she stays on top of you and makes you accountable but at the same time understands and keeps it real and doesn’t let you “ beat yourself up” with negativity.... she’s been there and that’s what makes her different. She’s struggled like a lot of us women have and continually do. I just adore and love her, she’s the best!!! Johnson is the proud mother of Joshua, age 9 and Faith, age 6. She has come a long way and she wants to help and let others

know that “You do not have to settle. The strongest, healthiest version of you, is within your reach.”

Meet Jennifer Shirk

By Lindsay Kirkland

“T

he more you write, the better you get and the third time is the charm,” advises local author, Jennifer Shirk. This was the case for her. Although she studied pharmaceuticals in college, Shirk began writing when she became a stay at home mom. She

has now published 7 novels and 2 novellas. Shirk’s genre is romance and she describes her style as light hearted or sweet romance. There are definitely no sex scenes. “Some things are best left to the imagination,” says Shirk. “Wrong Brother, Right Match” is Shirk’s latest novel which came out in December of 2016. Shirk’s “Sunny Days for Sam” won the Golden Quill Award for Published authors. Another of her novels “Fiance by Fate” was an Amazon Best Seller in romance series. Shirk shared that romance readers are voracious readers. They often read 4 or 5 books a month compared to 1 a month in other genres. Shirk is now working on a 3 book series she hopes to have on bookshelves in October. Shirk is a long time resident of Ocean City where she resides with her husband, daughter, dog named Sox and 4 hermit crabs. Most of her novels are set where she lives, a resort beach town that does not serve alcohol. Some of her favorite local

Postcards From The Past

How To Share Your Unique Story

By Jeff Whitaker

I

n my last article, I shared that we all have a story to share. This week, I’m going to share some tips on how to formulate and share the story that is uniquely yours. I’ll offer suggestions that will help you whether in your personal or business life.

Ventnor Pier, early 1900's The back of the postcard states "Adjacent to Atlantic City, Ventnor City is a quiet residential section noted for its cleanliness, pure water and recreational facilities"

King George is guided with his first wartime speech. After decades communicating on radio, television, from podiums and blog posts, it really crystalized for me several years ago when I saw the movie, The King’s Speech. (If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it). The idea that we are all where we are for a reason, placed there with a voice that needs to be heard. You might not think you have a platform. But you do. In The King’s Speech there is a line where the king is challenged by his speech coach who asked tauntingly, “Why should I listen to you?” In frustration, the king says, “Because I have a voice!!” Like the king, you have a voice. The challenge is how to stand out from the rest, how to get heard above the clutter of the crowd, how to give voice to your vision.

I’m going to suggest three ways to begin to formulate your story in a compelling way that interests and engages others. 1. Put Pen To Paper – Write it down. Tell your story from the beginning. Think about how you arrived to the place you are today. Go way back to your childhood, your dreams, your aspirations. What journey brought you to where you are now? Write down your struggles, challenges, victories and accomplishments. 2. Refine Your Results – Don’t worry about getting it all perfect. Once you have it written down, go back and edit. You will be surprised what you come up with. I promise you within your story you will find dreams realized, lessons learned; a unique story that is you and worth sharing within the context of your world and sphere of influence. 3. Share Your Story – Now find a way to tell others. There is no shortage of ways to communicate today. The days of the gatekeepers who made it nearly impossible to share your story without a ton of money and insider media contacts are gone. Social Media and a host of other outlets including your own blog or video podcast means there is no excuse. In my seminar, The Power Of The Story, I walk you step by step through a more in-depth process. But this will get you started. The next step is up to you. What’s your story? The world is waiting to hear. Jeff Whitaker is a lifelong communicator and storyteller. He is a certified trainer, coach and speaker with The John Maxwell Team. Jeff’s goal is to encourage excellence in individuals and corporations through leadership and communications training. Not everyone has time to preplan a funeral. But the peace of mind knowing that all the decisions have been made can be both financially and emotionally beneficial. We encourage you to call us to set up an appointment to discover a pre funeral planning program. Planning and funding your funeral in advance is one of the most caring decisions you can make and many area residents have made this important decision. A properly structured funded funeral plan can also assist you if you are trying to qualify for Medicaid.

Linwood Farmers Market Opening Day

O

Vegging at the Shore By Marci Lutsky

pening day of the spring Linwood Farmers Market was April 29th and it was just perfect. The market launched in the fall of 2016 and was met with such enthusiasm that we decided to run a six week spring market. We crossed our fingers for good weather and Mother Nature was on our side. We had blue skies, great vendors and big crowds. We were fortunate to have many of our vendors from the fall return.

If you ever visited the market early, you surely saw people lined up for Hammerbacher bread. Their bread,

knishes, babka and cookies are well worth the wait. We welcomed back Happy Valley Berry Farm selling pes-

resist. If you haven’t tried the honey from Honey and Hive, you are missing out! Next week we will see the return of Upper Sandwiches who makes the most delicious veggie burger! We also welcomed plenty of new vendors. Goji Juice Bar was pleasing to both the kids and adults with an array of innovative flavors like sunrise juice containing beets, apples, celery, orange, lemon and ginger. Mothers Day

By Samantha Gill

I

am trying to imagine what it must have felt like for my Mom in her early 40’s to find out the news that she was terminal just around this time of the year in 1987. I am about the age she was then. She had 2 children at the time. I have 2 children. Mother’s Day and her birthday would both be coming up in May and school would be letting out with the summer approaching. Normally families would be planning their vacations or summer camp routine. I cannot imagine what that conversation was like for my parents. I can’t imagine what that visit was like at the Dr.’s. I was your typical middle school kid in 7th grade going about my life. I “kinda knew” back in 4th grade-ish something was “up”. There was a mole on the back of my Mom’s thigh, or “something like that” that wasn’t “ok”. I knew my Gram came and stayed with with us while my Mom went to the hospital for a while. I knew my Mom was super brave while part of her skin from one leg was taken off to grow on the part of her thigh that had ‘that mole.’ She was a “trooper”, to say the very least. Then life just went back to “normal”. Mom was Mom. She took care of us. She was everwhere. She was at school, she brought the teacher’s “stuff” and she always made sure I was okay at school. She was involved in everything and knew everyone. She was just that kinda lady. She showed up for all of my events. She knew my friends and knew my friends parents. She knew all of my neighbor’s and talked to everyone. She loved to talk and laugh. She had a thick head of red hair and big blue eyes. She was hard to miss. If she thought something wasn’t ‘ok’, or that someone needed something, Mom took care of it or them. (I think she hid wings somewhere in the back of her clothes.) My Mom was a former English and History teacher. She gave it all up to raise her children and to be with us. As I would walk home from the bus stop I would see her at the storm door waiting and watching for me. I would see the red hair first. (We had 2 dogs: Tippy and Taffy. They would be waiting too.) Mom always had “GH” on (General Hospital), not only did she love it but she was friends with the writer, Gloria Monty. Mom would write to her and vice versa. When I would walk in the front door, GH would be on the little TV in the kitchen with a pot of something on the stove. She would have an after school snack ready for me.

MAY 4 - 17, 2017

This is what I remember about Mom. I don’t remember one Mother’s Day. I really don’t. I don’t remember celebrating one birthday(s) – her’s or mine. I see photo’s, but I don’t have an actual memory. My Mom passed away November 14th of that same year – 1987. As I type this I try to feasibly imagine leaving my kids and I well up with emotion. I can’t even fathom it. How incredibly brave my Mom was from beginning to end. How hard that must have been for her and she never ever once showed it. Not once. If anything, she tried her hardest to make it ok for US. She was worried about US, just like a Mom. On this Mother’s Day, I salute all the Mom’s who work hard every day and night to make the daily memories just like my Mom did for me because it is THOSE memories that really count. It is the every day, working hard, memories that matter. On days you may feel you’re not ‘hitting the mark’, I hope when you read this column today, it is a firm reminder that you indeed are. You are. Happy Mothers day.

Sam is a Mom of 2 girls, 8 and 6. Her 6 year old with special needs has a service dog. Her 8 yr old loves street hockey, they both love to surf and do karate. Sam hopes to take a nap someday. For now the whole tribe resides loudly in Northfield.

y wife and I have always put our children’s needs first as most parents do. As they grew we transported them to birthday parties, proms, sporting events, college tours, etc. We left for Connecticut one dark morning, watched crew races and returned in the dark the same night. Our youngest remarked that he saw the sunrise and the sunset from his seat in the van. The road trips continued on including one drive to Florida for the rowing Nationals, as well as two nights sleeping in our van for a Boston regatta. My wife and I did these things with a sense of duty, dedication and love. Then came the weddings and Bar/ Bas Mitzvah’s of our extended family. For some reason, many of these fell either on the weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th or Labor Day. For those of you who do not understand the “island mentality” of living in the Downbeach communities, one does not leave the island on the weekends especially holiday weekends. But this was family and there was a sense of obligation so we left behind the beach with its cool breezes and ventured inland with the holiday traffic. Now that my wife and I are in

our 60’s we are becoming a little more discerning with our time. A recent health scare highlighted the reality that tomorrow is promised to no one and we want to take the time to share as many rich experiences as we can. I remember when I tried to include my mother in some of these extended family affairs, she would demurely decline the offer stating that she was tired or just didn’t feel that good. I respected her wishes but after some time, it became clear to me what she was doing and it brought a smile to my face.

My mother was in charge of how she lived her life and clearly earned that right. She was perfectly happy enjoying the peaceful life she carved out for herself right where she was. So that’s where my wife and I are heading. While socialization continues to be an important part of our lives, people might question our proclivity for just the two of us heading out to embrace the activities my wife and I enjoy together. Those experiences were almost taken away from us and remain a constant reminder. Try as we may to attend as many events as we can, there may be times when our presence is unaccounted for. Perhaps my back is sore or we are too tired but at any rate, maybe at some point our excuse will bring a knowing smile across your face.

ucked away in the Linwood Greene Shopping Plaza on Route 9 is a gateway into multiple worlds, some are surreal, some are of days gone by, while others keep you grounded here in South Jersey. If you enter the Nashville North Studios and are not transported, then you need to dig deeper into yourself to find that part of you that appreciates the world of art. Whether it’s canvas, sculptures, framed photographs, or jewelry that speaks to you, or perhaps all of it, you will have found within you the quality of art appreciation. Judy Saylor Allison discovered her desire to be an artist using various mediums in her 50s, and has now been hosting art exhibits on a monthly basis here at Nashville North Studios. Along with her own works of art are enlarged framed photographs by Paul Dempsey mounted on metal showing the preserved past located in Batsto. There are B&W photographs of jazz greats such as Stan Getz, and early rock and rollers such as Bobby Darin, along with a pre Experience photo of the late great Jimi Hendrix all part of the Popsie Collection which was part of the March Opening. This month’s opening , which I attended on April 28, and was open to the public, as are all Judy’s openings, was The Linwood Arboretum, in honor of Earth Day, and the one year

anniversary of Nashville North Studios openings. When attending an opening, you will not only get to meet some of the artists who are more than willing to discuss their

"Air Guitar" wood sculpture by Charles Wray, Jr. include Barbara Watson, Charles Wray Jr, and Cape May’s Michael Trenick. Of course Judy’s paintings are also featured and include wondrous works of art on canvas depicting flora and fauna, most notably her capturing in oil a carnivorous plant, a sunflower, and other paintings on canvas like her trademark “skulls of endangered species” such as Loggerhead Turtles and the American Crocodile. Judy, who is a licensed Real Estate Agent, is a board member of the Ocean City Fine Arts League and the Biscayne Nature Center in Key Biscayne, Florida, an artist at the Noye’s Museum, and is involved in galleries in Manhattan and Miami, as well as an upcoming art exhibit in Atlantic City. Her art also adorned the walls of Shore

Medical for seven months until August of last year, so there is a good chance you’ve already admired her work. She is also a Partner with NNS Records, a joint venture with her husband and childhood sweetheart, Nashville Songwriter and Record Producer Jim Allison. Part of the goings on at Nashville North Studios is songwriting and the recording, mixing, and mastering of artists by Jim Allison who has written platinum selling songs for Reba McIntyre and Leann Rimes, has worked with the likes of Nashville Legend Del Reeves, Country Music Superstars Blake Shelton and Billy Ray Cyrus, and more recently the up and coming Todd O’Neill whose record just reached 59 on the Billboard Charts. He also had the pleasure of working with an 8 year old Hillary Scott, who is now of course the Grammy Award winning female vocalist of Lady Antebellum. Other well known celebrity recording artists who have recorded songs by Jim include Wayne Newton, Lee Ann Womack, Eddie Rabbitt, and BJ Thomas. Judy and Jim are an amiable, accessible, creative couple who are delightful to engage in conversation, and who would be glad to discuss further opportunities they could provide for you in the areas of art and music. Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery The Woman’s Center offers a lifeline By Heather Grant

S

lavery still exists. It simply changed forms and the internet has fueled it. Human Trafficking is slavery. It is abducting and having control over another person for the purpose of exploitation, usually selling that person for forced sex or labor. The majority of trafficking victims are between 18-24 years old. Many are younger. Statistics show that within the first 48 hours a child is missing, he or she is likely to be approached by a human trafficker. They may be lured with false offers of help. Then they will be beaten, threatened and sold for sex again and again, up to 20 times a day. It does not only happen on the worst street corners or shady, low end motels. It happens everywhere including in single family residential neighborhoods. In New Jersey, no one is better at recognizing it than Dawne Lomangino-DiMauro of The Women’s Center, Director of Statewide Human Trafficking Services. She

has seen evidence of modern slavery for years, even before the government officially recognized

Artemis

it in 2000. Lomangino-DiMauro now heads up Dream Catcher, a task force led by the FBI to end trafficking. “Slaves no longer have chains around their ankles,” says Lomangino-DiMauro. “They now have chains around their mind.” Victims of trafficking are victims of fraud,

force and coercion. The rise of the internet has made the slave trade boom. People are sold and bought online. Trafficking victims are often lured through social media. Lomangino-DiMauro says it is impossible to generalize the victims due to the variety of cases. The oldest victim she has worked with was 75. The youngest was 10. However, every victim she has ever rescued was hungry and abused. Traffickers target the most vulnerable populations. Many victims have been abused previously and often come out of the foster care system. LGBT individuals and people with developmental disabilities are disproportionately targeted. The best way to fight slavery is to report anything suspicious. “If you see something, say something,” Lomangino-DiMauro advises. The Women’s Center has a 24 hour hotline you can call. 1-800-286-4184. Volunteers and donations to their office in Linwood are very helpful. Volunteers are needed to do secretarial work so the team can focus on rescuing and rehabilitating survivors of human trafficking. Donations go primarily towards helping victims get back on their feet. For more information go to www.acwc.org

“The First Birdie”

illions of people around the world play golf, and millions more who don’t play the game know the word “birdie”, but did you know that birdie was first used right here in Southern New Jersey? It’s true, and it happened one day way back in 1903 at maybe the most historic of all the great South Jersey golf courses, Atlantic City Country Club, founded in 1897, in a December foursome which included two of America’s, and the game’s, greatest golf course architects and personalities, A.W. Tillinghast and George Crump. According to history, the two giants of the game, Tillinghast, architect of two of most famous championship sites Baltusrol and Bethpage Black and Crump, designer of the revered Pine Valley Golf Course were golfing with fellow Philadelphians Bill and Abner Smith, when Abner playing what used to be the two shots under par, “eagle”, was first used at the same club soon after. Longtime club owner, and Professional Golfers Association of America president(1969-1970), Leo Fraser, who took over Atlantic City Country

Club in 1946, kept the old 12th, then 2nd, green as a practice green and commemorated the hallowed ground where “birdie” was born as a historic site with a plaque on a stone detailing the legendary day the Philly foursome first coined the word in 1903.

Photo courtesy of Atlantic City Country Club long par 4 twelfth hole, hit his second shot right at the hole making the score of 3, or one-under-par, an all-but assured formality. The story continues that someone from the group following that historic swing, either Abner himself, or maybe his

brother exclaimed something like “that’s a bird of a shot!”. Thus, the term meaning one shot under par became a local phrase“birdie”and becoming the official vocabulary that all golfers call a score of one shot better than par. The term for

he Women’s Center’s annual ‘Spring Fling’ Luncheon and Fundraiser took place on April 27 to highlight The Center’s 42 years of service in the community. Assemblyman Brown presented The Center with a special proclamation, recognizing their work to end oppression and violence while engaging, educating and empowering diverse and marginalized communities for the past 42 years. Over the years, thousands and thousands of individuals have reached out to The Center looking for help. What started out as a handful of volunteers in 1974 has grown into an agency with over 60 staff and a multitude of services. “It was wonderful to see how many

people came out to support our ‘Spring Fling’ Luncheon,” said Claudia Ratzlaff, CEO, The Women’s Center. “Everyone’s continued support will allow us to con-

tinue our work around the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking, while also focusing on improving early childhood care and education,” she added. This year’s ‘Spring Fling’ had an emphasis on the fight against human trafficking. The event also presented Golden Sun Awards, honoring those who have been integral in working to eradicate human trafficking throughout the state. Honorees included various levels of law enforcement and volunteer agencies that have been partners with The Center and have helped to make changes throughout the state. Proceeds raised from the event will benefit The Center’s ongoing programs, services and workshops, which help provide much needed support and assistance to clients in preparing for their next transition in life.

Jah’s Creation Organic Farm:

Bringing the Farm to Your Door By Georgina Hand

T

his year Jah’s Creation Organic Farm in Egg Harbor Township celebrates 10 years of community supported agriculture and 20 years in the organic industry. “We currently farm 5 tracts of land, between EHT and Mays Landing, and have 12 acres in certified organic production,” said owner Matthew Bruckler. Matthew runs the farm with his wife Linda, his mother Phyllis Pitt helps with the farmers markets, runs errands and helps with the office work. His son Benjamin Moses, helps in the fields, greenhouses and packing house.

“I spent my life in the agriculture industry working for my family,” said Matthew. “Many years ago I was fortunate enough to spend a considerable amount of my time at the farm of a Rastafari elder by the name “Ibo” in the wonderful hills of Barbados, West Indies.” Organic produce has gained popularity as people seek out a more natural, health conscious diet. Organic vegetables are grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, which means they are safer to eat and better for the environment, they also taste better and are richer in nutrients. Community supported agriculture (CSA) allows a family to buy a share of a farm’s produce for a season. Jah’s Creation Organic Farm delivers a box of fresh organic produce

Matthew Bruckler every week of the season directly to the door of its members. “CSA is Crop Share, Buyers Club which gives the community a direct access to a farm’s bounty and the farmer access to “seed money” for the season, while securing a market for the crop being grown. It is a shared risk between the farmer and the community,” explained Matthew. “We deliver to our CSA member’s homes each week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.” Jah’s Creation organic produce is also available outside of the CSA. “Our retail partners are Bonterra Market, Green Street Market, Pangaea Naturals, Pamela’s Health & Harmony, JR’s Fresh Market, & BF Mazzeo. Other Community Partners are Greens & Grains, Enlightened Solutions, and we have relations with numerous other food operations throughout Southern NJ.” Buying into a CSA is investing into your family’s health, a local farm and the local economy. To join Jah’s Creation’s CSA is just $24 per week which is $384 for the 16 week season. Only 25 CSA spaces remain for the 2017 season and are sold on a first come/ first serve basis. Jah’s Creation Organic Farm is located at 4045 Spruce Ave, Egg Harbor Township For more information go to www.jahscreation.com or @JAHSCREATIONOrganicFarm on Facebook.

tlantic City closed out April with a bang! If you drove through the 48 blocks this weekend, chances are you encountered some traffic, maybe a full parking lot, and lots of uniquely-dressed pedestrians in town for a secret, pop-up EDM festival. Resorts Casino & Hotel’s Superstar Theater was home to a jampacked show Saturday night, “A Night at the 500 Club: Dave Damiani & Friends” featuring Haley Rinehart, Renee Olstead, Landau Murphy Jr., and The No Vacancy Orchestra. The show transported its audience back to oldschool Atlantic City, highlighting the American Songbook and its home at Paul “Skinny” D’Amato’s 500 Club. The songs spanned the decades from the 40s to present day, covering artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Jack Sheldon, Frankie Valli, Amy Winehouse, and my personal favorite, Landau Murphy Jr.’s rendition of Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is”

Atlantic City’s mayor Don Guardian introduced the show with a brief history of Resorts, the Superstar Theater, and the 500 club. Haley Rinehart, of Postmodern Jukebox and the recently-gold cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, earned some excited hollers from the audience with her version of Sharon Jones’ “100 Days, 100 Nights”. Her performance of Radiohead’s “Creep” is what gave me goosebumps! Renee Olstead crooned the crowd with a few ballads and was joined on stage by Rinehart for an Amy Winehouse duet. Rinehart and Damiani paid homage to the warm weather with “Summer Wind”, and all four closed the show with crowd favorite, “That’s Life”, which had most everyone singing and clapping along. Hands down, the best part of the evening for me was when Damiani revealed that he and Alex Frank, bassist and No Vacancy Orchestra’s musical director, wrote a song especially for Atlantic City, entitled, “This Is AC”. It was the perfect way to bring together the new and the old Atlantic City and show respect for its landmarks, businesses, and establishments that are the heartbeat of the community. Skinny D’Amato’s daughter, Paula Jane, was in the front row and acknowledged the song with a standing ovation followed by the rest of the audience. Hot for Summer: Create a SHORE PRO MARKETPLACE Perfect Outdoor Escape in Your Backyard (StatePoint) If there’s anything better than heating up the grill and chilling drinks with close friends late into a summer evening, it’s decorating the space in which it all takes place. As with all things summer, refreshing your outdoor space calls for a simple, relaxed approach. Here are a few ideas for making a quick splash. LESS IS MORE, SOMETIMES As fun as it is to design for new things, subtraction is often where the real opportunity is hiding. Make a tired space feel new again by donating, repurposing or storing items that simply don’t serve a purpose or add anything visually. RETHINKING ARRANGEMENTS There’s more to design than placing chairs around a table or fire pit. Striking the right balance takes some intentionality and thought. Incorporating strong elements of symmetry and repetition can do as much toward establishing a relaxing, inviting tone as an eclectic playlist or perfectly plated appetizers. Identifying the focal point is a key early step. Often in backyard settings, it’s a permanent feature, such as a particular view, landscape design or fire pit. When this isn’t an option, or if the area serves a specific purpose such as dining, furniture can be used to create the same conversational effect. COLOR AND PATTERN Most permanent fixtures and large outdoor furniture pieces trend traditional. Adding flourishes with vibrant contrasting seat cushions and boldly patterned throw pillows is a quick way to express personality.

Their step-by-step outdoor cushion measuring guide makes finding the right-sized cushion easy, and quick and simple video instructions take the guesswork out of the process, ensuring the proper fit. For more information, visit improvementscatalog.com. LIGHTEN UP One of the easiest ways to dramatically enhance an outdoor setting is often overlooked -- lighting. Good lighting boosts safety and security. After all, summer is the season for tripping over pavers in the dark. And a thoughtful approach can be transformative -- from illuminating paths through the backyard to setting a relaxing tone for a patio. Many solutions, such as higher-voltage lighting systems, call for a contractor’s expertise. Even some lower-voltage systems will require some additional equipment for proper energy control. To keep it simple, solar is the way to go. Just make sure the photovoltaic cell is positioned to collect maximum sunlight during the day so it’s ready to shine through the night. For example, the new Provence solar post and path lights from Improvements are a good way to accent landscaping while keeping pathways safe. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fitsall template for the perfect backyard summer sanctuary. But with a creative mindset and a clear vision, you can transform your backyard into a unique casual space.
