Alberta Clipper Brings Late Season Snow

O

n Saturday April 9th, the area experienced something that has not been seen in nearly 20 years; Accumulating snow. Snowfall amounts ranged anywhere from one to four inches and it caught many people off guard including the meteorologists.

So the question all of you have is why and how did this happen? The system that gave us the snow originally started out in Alberta Canada and dove south and east. They are known as clipper systems. They often occur during the winter and pick up some moisture as it heads to the east.

On most occasions they do not bring more than a couple inches of snow to the area. Some of those clipper systems will strengthen once they hit the Atlantic Coast and can often bring heavy snows to New England. In

this instance as soon as the Low pressure system hit the coast an inverted trough began to develop. An inverted trough is a wind shift that extends to the northwest of the center of the low causing rising air and thus enhancing precipitation. These are extremely difficult to forecast, where and when they will set up. Where it does set up, very heavy snow bands which are narrow can occur.

Snowfall rates can often be an inch an hour and it can be lead to white out conditions on area roads.

In this circumstance, the computer models did a very good job on picking this up, but many of them predicted this trough to be set up over Southeastern Pennsylvania. The inverted trough set up over Southern New Jersey enhancing the snow in the area.

Another factor was behind most clipper systems cold air usually follows because of the wind shift.

Temperatures can drop 10-15 degrees

or more once they pass on through. This system was no different.

At the start of the day on Saturday temperatures were too warm to support snow. Once the low moved to the east just off the coast, it brought in the cold air from the northwest and the inverted trough developed, thus bringing the accumulating snow.

The strong April sun angle prevented this from being a major snow event. If this was January or February this would have been a 6-12 inch snowstorm.

It’s hard to specify how often inverted troughs happen as they are extremely difficult to forecast.

On top of the fact that it’s April.

The growing season has started and it’s supposed to warm up. The last thing anybody expected was a winter event that we have not seen in nearly 20 years.

OPINIONS “Green Energy” Really Just a Ponzi Scheme

A

lmost every day, we are lied to about solar panels and wind turbines. They don’t cut carbon dioxide or stop global warming. They don’t save money. They also kill far more jobs than they create, because they force electric companies to roughly triple their rates.

Every sixth grader should know that the Ice Age is not just a movie. It was when the earth got cold two million years ago. Giant ice sheets (and woolly mammoths) covered most of New Jersey. The earth got warmer and that ice started to melt about 23,000 years ago.

Whether carbon dioxide from man-made machines a difference during the past 200 years is far from “settled science.”

But even if carbon dioxide (the gas we breathe out, and green plants breathe in) is bad, solar panels and wind turbines do nothing to make less of it.

Think of the electric grid that powers our homes as a giant tire, that needs the uniform pressure at all times. When we turn on a microwave, it is like letting air out of that tire which must be immediately replaced—by cranking up a generator to put more power in.

Solar panels are useless because they only produce electricity about

three hours a day, and shut down whenever a cloud goes by. Wind turbines stop whenever the wind stops blowing. As a sailboat owner, I also know that wind rarely blows on the hottest summer days when we need power the most. No matter how many wind turbines and solar panels we build, we will still need back-up generators to

burn the same amount of coal, oil, and natural gas so they can quickly pump power into the grid whenever a cloud goes by or the wind stops blowing.

Dear Governor, The Answer is Blowing in the Wind

ear Governor Christie, Let’s be straight with one another. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen you down here in South Jersey.

I know, you’ve been busy running

for president, but apparently that ship has sailed. Maybe now you’ve got some free time to spend in the part of the state, your state, that needs your help the most. In case you hadn’t heard, Atlantic County

has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation. Wouldn’t you love to help us? Think of how it would look in the national press if you rescued all of us. What a legacy that would be.

But I hear you asking yourself, “Chris, how could I pull it off?” The answer is in the wind. Actually, the answer is wind.

Yeah, I know, you’ve heard alternative energy pitches before. However, they’ve all been vague. So let me lay it out for you straight, in easy to digest language, using three little words: Maine did it. Specifically, the town of Oakfield, in north-eastern Maine. They built 48 wind turbines in Oakfield, which now generate almost 150 megawatts. How much is that? 150 MW is enough power to energize over a hundred thousand homes. Given that there are just about 128,000 homes in Atlantic County, the Oakfield wind farm could power more than 78% of our houses.

Think of that! You, Governor Christie, could cut Atlantic County electrical bills by over three-quarters!

You’d be a hero. Who doesn’t love a hero?

Offshore Windmills Good or Bad? W indpower in New Jersey is in the early stages of development. There are various projects underway to create windfarms along coastal areas in the state on land, on piers, and in the ocean offshore.. Legislation has been enacted to support the

industry through economic incentives and to permit wind turbines on existing piers. Several proposals have been made to expand the use of wind-generated power which may lead to the nation's first offshore wind power pilot project.

In October 2010, North American Offshore Wind Conference was

held in Atlantic City, the site of the US's first on-shore coastal facility.

New Jersey is part of the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium.

In May 2014, the Department of Energy awarded a grant for up to $47 million for the pilot of the Atlantic City Windfarm, calling the project

"innovative". New Jersey regulators had earlier rejected the same project in March. In July 2014, the federal Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Ocean Management proposed sale of leases for nearly 344,000 acres (139,000 ha) covering an area about 7 miles off the coast of Atlantic City.

Yoga To Make A Difference Grow Yoga Event Helps Victims In Bolivia

exual assault is recognized once a year by America, but Grow Yoga and A Breeze of Hope Foundation acknowledge it every day.

Tara Forslund, co-owner of the Galloway yoga studio, has discovered how to combine her two passions of therapy and yoga into one force of healing. She utilized her Master’s Degree in Drama Therapy and passion for yoga in order to help treat victims of sexual violence with two service trips to Bolivia.

Forslund ventured to Cochabamba, Bolivia in an act of service for the A Breeze of Hope Foundation—a 501(c)(3) public charity that strives to combat sexual violence.

A Breeze of Hope’s tactics “teeter on the edge of unethical,” said Parker Palmer, co-president. They treat sexual violence victims with a patient-centered approach, which “gives a child power when they have been disempowered,” says Palmer.

The results of such an approach aren’t gathered through quantitative data, but qualitative. Palmer says that the conventional practice

Breeze of Hope has replaced this form of client analysis with detailed observation in the child’s daily life, basing their judgment with intangible factors like self-esteem and fitting in at school.

According to The Pan American Health Organization, Bolivia’s rates of sexual violence are the highest in Latin America. A Breeze of Hope Founder and Co-President Brisa De Angulo has combatted this with passion—being a survivor of childhood sexual violence herself.

According to their 2015 Annual Report, since 2004, A Breeze of Hope has: treated and supported more than 1,450 child victims, educated and trained of more than 80,000 people in sexual violence prevention, and 9,080 in early childhood development, and maintained a 95 percent conviction rate in their hundreds of prosecuted trials—the highest rate of sex crimes in the world.

Palmer says that Forslund has been influential in A Breeze of Hope’s philosophies and practices, as her body-based therapies emphasize an appreciation of the personal recovery of victims.

During her last trip, Forslund provided 105 children with trauma-focused yoga therapy. She could only stay for two weeks, but she wanted the yoga therapy to continue—so she also trained 25 instructors.

Grow introduced Yoga enEspañol with a workshop led by Registered Yoga Teacher Andreína Croce, a native Venezuelan.

Croce was worried that she’d slip into English while teaching, but she didn’t. And participants not fluent in Spanish could follow, as the language consisted mostly of anatomy and verbs. Despite the feasibility of English-speakers posing to Spanish-spoken yoga, Croce hopes that the class is “something for people to try who are afraid of the language barrier.”

Sarah Manna, a Spanish and ESL educator, attended the workshop in order to take her knowledge and experience to other countries, hoping to create and implement yoga programs. “Yoga opens people to being vulnerable, to be reliant on their neighbors,” she said.

Grow’s mission is to cultivate a powerful community, according to their website. Forslund hopes that each decision she and her team make accomplishes that mission.

Small Businesses Are South Jersey’s Character and Economy

pring has come to South Jersey and with it something that we have long needed: cautious optimism. While remnants of the recession can still be seen and unemployment continues to be unacceptably high, the warmer weather has helped usher in a sense of stability and certainty — ​a sentiment I’ve noticed as I’ve visited with local employers across our region as part of National Small Business week. Many I spoke with pointed to the pending summer tourism season, new orders for goods and services, and positive regional developments such as new commercial air service into ACY to underscore their confidence that this could be a better year for South Jersey.

Case in point: During a site visit Yank Marine in Tuckahoe, I reviewed the progress of the latest ferry hull under construction for their client.

Hiring additional workers and looking to make a capital investment of new lift and repair equipment, the mood at Yank Marine was one of looking towards the future and completing the substantial task at hand. It is that determination and focus fueling the success of our small businesses and, in turn, growing South Jersey’s economy.

I remember that intense focus well from my days at my family’s trucking company. It was there I learned the critical importance of real-world solutions to the issues facing us. In fact, it has been one of the guiding principles I’ve used to evaluate legis-

lation in Congress. This month I was honored to be named a “Hero of Main Street” by the National Retail Federation for my dedication and proven commitment to public policies that grow South Jersey’s Main Streets — ​ the mom and pop stores that are the backbone of South Jersey’s character and economy. Its businesses like Kona Sports in Wildwood that keep visitors coming back year after year — ​and because of their loyal following they can look to expand operations, hire additional staff or even attempt new ventures. Such is the story behind Poppi’s Brick Oven, the latest endeavor from the Sciarra family, which will further diversify our region’s appeal and shape its future.

Most owners or entrepreneurs will say the key for any successful small business is recognizing the economic and regulatory issues they face and reacting pragmatically. I recently had the privilege to join the Kramer family and their employees to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Kramer Beverage Company, a well-known family-owned business operating across South Jersey. A festive day with a strong turnout of the greater Hammonton community, their story is impressive given their roots during the Prohibition Era and survival despite various economic downturns. Each year, similar small businesses in our region and across the country open their doors hoping to reach such a milestone. Only pro-growth policies can help them achieve that goal — ​o nes I am committed to supporting in Washington.

In its 28th year, the U. S. Those members of Congress who support the Chamber’s position on at least 70% of those votes receive the award. LoBiondo compiled an 85 percent score with the Chamber last year.

Earth Day events start April 9

E

arth Day began on April 22, 1970, with global demonstrations organized in support of Environmental Protection. Two thousand colleges and universities, roughly ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States participated. An estimated 20 million Americans became aware of the issues concerning the environment. Many Environmental protections were put into place following this one day event. Later that year United States Senator Gaylord Nelson drafted a resolution to designate the third week of April of each year as Earth Week as an environmental “teach-in.” Today the Earth Day Network http://www.earthday.org coordinates the celebrations in more than 192 countries.

Worldwide annual Earth Day events are held on and around April 22. Celebrations range from educational opportunities, music festivals and Earth Day fairs to demonstration events to push for better regulation of pollution and protection of public health.

Locally we see environmental education in schools and colleges, peaceful demonstrations, community service projects, and all out festivals, to enable residents to celebrate Earth Day and live sustainably. Find an event near you.

Free Tree Seedlings Available To Atlantic County Residents

Free tree seedlings will be offered to Atlantic County residents beginning Saturday, April 9, while supplies last, at the Warren E. Fox Nature Center in the Atlantic County Park, Route 50, Estell Manor between 8 am and 4 pm each day.

The seedlings are provided as part of the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign to help communities replace trees damaged or destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

This the third year of a five year program during which the campaign plans to distribute 500,000 seedlings to residents throughout the state.

“We encourage residents to take advantage of this program that is helping to enhance our communities with the planting of trees,” stated County Executive Dennis Levinson. “Trees benefit us in many ways - adding visual beauty, reducing home cooling costs and air pollutants, and providing wildlife habitats.”

“Consider celebrating Arbor Day with the planting of new trees on your own property,” he added.

The seedlings will be distributed in bundles of five per household with instructions on storage, care and planting.

Recipients are advised to plant the seedlings soon after receiving them to prevent the roots from drying out. Information will also include how to choose a proper planting site with the tree’s mature growth size in mind. All seedlings will be native to the coastal habitat of our area.

If you would like to participate, it is suggested that you call ahead to confirm seedling availability, especially if you are driving from a distance.

This distribution is a collaborative effort of Atlantic County government, the New Jersey State Forestry Services, the State Forest Nursery, New Jersey Soil Conservation Districts, Sustainable Jersey, and the Arbor Day Foundation.

The Galloway West Tract provides an essential habitat for trees and wildlife. This cleanup not only spruces up the area for nature enthusiasts, but will also help keep the ecosystem clean for all walks of life.

Everyone will meet at the area of Liebig Ave and Pomona Road at the gate to the property at 8:15 a.m. The cleanup will be broken into 3 teams at one of each of the debris areas. Please dress for the weather. Bring gloves and water. Lunch will be provided after the cleanup.

Rent a space for only $15 a season.

Greenhouse access, water, basic tools and garden beds filled with ACUA’s EcoSoil are provided.

You do not need to be an experienced gardener – interest and commitment to maintain your part of the garden are all you need.

Educational programs are offered to gardeners and the public during the summer season.

The garden is located next to our playground, picnic area and Poetry Trail, which offers a peaceful setting to garden.

Brigantine Beach Community Center offers programs

he Brigantine Beach Community Center (BBCC) is located at 265 42nd Street in Brigantine. The phone number is (609) 264-7350. The BBCC is open 6 days a week, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The BBCC coordinator is Ed Stoltzfus of the Brigantine CER staff. The BBCC is currently offering the following programs: SENIOR CENTER Senior Citizens age 60 and older and their spouses are invited to attend the Brigantine Senior Center. The Center hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each day a balanced lunch is served without cost.

A one dollar donation is suggested to enhance the program. Meals are planned by a qualified nutritionist to supply at least one third of the day’s nutritional requirements. Seniors are asked to make reservations for meals at least two days in advance. Atlantic County Seniors Centers are dedicated to providing services that enhance the educational, social and recreational lives of our seniors.

Activities may include Bingo, Exercise, Mahjong, Pinochle, Trips, Yoga and more.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Approximately 19 years ago, the City of Brigantine decided to initiate a volunteer program that would include delivering meals to homebound seniors and a senior shuttle bus. As of today, we have over 26 volunteers who deliver twenty noon day meals.

We have 5 drivers who drive the shuttle bus on weekdays from 9 a.m. to Noon.

This service operates at no cost to seniors and enables them to keep their appointments and do their shopping on the island. Tom Shanley is the City coordinator for the Volunteer Program.

THE PLAYROOM The Playroom is an indoor playground for children ages five and below and is located in the new Community Center.

The Playroom is in operation from September to May. There are slides, pretend play, books, toys and all inside a clean and warm environment.

Daily hours of operation will be Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Adult supervision is required, no drop-offs. There is a $2 donation requested for each child. The Playroom is a great place to have a birthday or holiday party. Call Jen for details: 732-580-2343.

BEACH TAGS AND 4 WHEEL DRIVE PERMITS The 4 wheel drive permits, gift certificates, beach tags and parking permits are on sale at the Brigantine Beach Community Center and prices vary by season. Bring valid driver’s license, current registration and current insurance card for the vehicle needing a permit and fill out an age appropriate form.

Take Another Swipe at New Year’s Resolutions with Healthy Recipes

Eliminate sugary drinks, like soda, as they don’t offer any nutritional value.

Identify ways to reduce the amount of food you eat, as we all tend to eat more than we need to.

Most importantly, limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat – this means trying to reduce the amounts of pastas, breads and sugars you are consuming – and focus on eating more fiber-rich vegetables, healthy fats and optimal protein.

Place 2 lettuce leaves on each plate and spoon 1/4 of chicken salad into each cup. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and serve.

Waldorf Chicken Salad in Lettuce Cups

Serves: 2 • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard • 1 teaspoon dried thyme pinch of salt

Serves: 2 • 2 large Portobello mushroom caps • 1 teaspoon olive oil • 10 ounces (about 3 links) sweet Italian turkey sausage, removed from casing • 1 cup chopped baby spinach • 1/2 cup salsa (jarred or Quick Tomato Salsa recipe) • 2 eggs • 1/2 avocado, peeled and sliced thinly • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese • 1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro Heat oven to 400 F. Place mushrooms, smooth side up, on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven and place mushroom caps smooth side up on platter lined with paper towels to drain some of the water.

In medium frying pan, heat oil over medium heat. Brown sausage and

break into small pieces with back of wooden spoon while cooking. Stir in spinach and salsa. Transfer mixture to mixing bowl to cool slightly.

Carefully separate egg yolks then place whites in one bowl and yolks in 2 separate small bowls. Beat egg whites with fork.

On baking sheet lined with parchment paper, place mushrooms smooth side down. Place half of avocado slices under mushrooms.

Add egg whites and cheddar cheese to sausage mixture and combine well.

Divide mixture in half and stuff into Portobello caps on top of avocado.

For each mushroom, make well in center of sausage mixture large enough for egg yolk.

Bake 10 minutes and carefully pour yolk into each well. Bake until yolks are set, about 5 minutes.

Sprinkle with cilantro before serving.

Quick Tomato Salsa • 1 tomato, cored and diced • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion • 1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro • sprinkle of ground cumin • sprinkle of garlic powder

1lime wedge, juice only salt and pepper, to taste In mixing bowl, combine tomato, onion and cilantro. Season with cumin, garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper, to taste.

Luscious Lemon Squares Serves: 16 Crust: • 1/2 cup almond or hazelnut meal • 1/2 cup coconut flour • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon • pinch of salt • 1 tablespoon natural sugar replacement • 3 tablespoons melted butter • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract Filling: 1/4 cup coconut flour • 2 tablespoons natural sugar replacement • 4 large eggs • 1/2 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice Heat oven to 350 F. Line 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper.

To make crust, in large bowl, combine almond meal, coconut flour, cinnamon, salt and sweetener. Add melted butter and vanilla extract. Combine all ingredients together and press dough evenly into bottom of baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes, until lightly golden around edges. Remove from oven and set aside.

To make filling, stir coconut flour and sweetener together. Whisk in eggs and lemon juice.

Pour filling into crust and bake 10-15 minutes, until golden around edges.

Let cool at room temperature then refrigerate a minimum of 2 hours before cutting into squares.

He likes to sleep in bed with you but adjusts easily to a dog bed as well. He has a very gentle mouthed when taking treats and giving kisses. This very sweet gentle guy is easily handled and housebroken. Duke walks easily on a leash and prefers to go to the bathroom in a yard or a long leash, as opposed in a kennel. Since he got to HSAC, he has won the hearts of all the staff members and volunteers. A true gentleman that should acclimate to the right family easily. He is about 2.5 years old.

Chewy is a 10 month old longhaired cat just waiting for you to come adopt him! He loves to lounge around and relax with his scratching pads. He would make a great pet in just about any home - as long as you like to hang out and love him!

Transitioning Resources Important to Returning Service Members

E

ach year, between 240,000 and 360,000 service members transition out of the U.S. military, and as we draw down from the war in Afghanistan, the military is expected to separate a million service members over the next several years, according to the White House. This leaves our nation’s heroes returning home only to face a new battle—finding a job in the civilian workforce.

Service members and veterans gain valuable skills and knowledge during the time they serve. However, understanding how the skills gained in the military translate to civilian jobs isn’t always easy.

An online survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of University of Phoenix® in fall 2015 of more than 500 hiring managers found that they overwhelmingly (86 percent) have considered hiring a person with militar y background. And of those same hiring managers, 80 percent cited hiring employees with a military background.

“Militar y veterans are well disciplined and possess a strong work ethic, making them desirable employees for organizations,” said Adam Such, University of Phoenix Military Relations vice president and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel. “Hiring managers are taking notice of the unique skills that military members bring to the civilian workplace. The community can support veterans by providing resources to help them communicate effectively with employers and know how their skills can help them grow and thrive in civilian careers.”

Having a plan is critical for veterans transitioning, but less than one in three (28 percent) of current active-duty service members have made a transition plan, according to another University of Phoenix survey of more than 1,000 past and active service members, 138 of whom identified as active duty. To prepare themselves for the private sector, veterans should consider: 1. Putting a plan in place before leaving the military

2. Get ting additional career-specific training and education to add to military skill sets 3. Preparing for the job search and civilian work life.

“A transition plan is essential for veterans making the leap from a military career to the civilian workforce but employers also need to take steps to ensure that a candidate’s military experience is matched appropriately to the civilian position,” said Such. “It isn’t always easy for returning military service members to know how to market their skills and employers may not instinctively know how those skills translate. The good news is that there are a number of resources out there to support veterans and employers in speaking the same language during the interview and job placement process.”

Higher education and employers can play a critical role in providing resources to those who have served, as well as the opportunities they need to successfully transition to civilian careers.

Veterans have valuable skills and knowledge that can be great assets in the civilian workforce.

Atlantic County Economic Turn Around: It’s About You and Me

e have all heard about the glass half full or half empty. Clearly we can all adopt the position in our county of the glass being half empty that is the easy way out. However, I am here to tell you it is half full. We are bucking the downturn of Atlantic City. We are battling the State elected officials who want Casinos in North Jersey and who want to take over the City. The war

isn’t over yet. How many sport events are won in the final seconds? Attitude is everything. If we think we lost, we are done. If we truly employ a winning attitude we will win.

Recently, the County conducted a research report to identify past, and current economic conditions along with future opportunities.

The Casino industry is the obvious economic engine for the region, however it is not the only answer for our future growth. Several other sectors manifest growth avenues that we are currently pursuing such as the Stockton Aviation Park, the medical community, non-casino entertainment, expansion of higher education such as Stockton and Rowan.

After well over a year delay with breaking ground for the Aviation Park, it appears that we are finally very close to starting the greatest Economic Engine that we have seen in decades. When this 400,000 square foot Park eventually comes

to fruition, it should be a beginning of an era of an industry that will provide well-paying and stable jobs.

This single activity will have a positive ripple effect through- out the including but not limited to medical, retail, further support office and services in general.

Atlantic City also has positive upcoming news with regard to Stockton University and South Jersey Industries hopefully breaking ground with two new sites off of Albany Avenue. Showboat sale to Bart Blatstein will bring some new and exciting entertainment. Eventually the Revel will open up with a new theme. Several development projects are scheduled to break ground in the near future.

I have been a commercial Realtor for the past 32 years. In order to stay relevant, I constantly have to reinvent my marketing methods and the way I sell and lease properties. I could throw up my arms and choose the

In conclusion, we all need to do our part and spread good news on the internet, through conversations, and print media. Every time you hear good news broadcast it.

Declining Enrollment Has Local Colleges Seeking Answers

tlantic Cape Community College may have celebrated their 50th anniversary this year, but their enrollment has been getting lower and lower. The same is true for other colleges on the East Coast.

Atlantic Cape total student enrollment has dropped greatly, and is expected to drop further. In five years, the college has lost 1,300 students.

With the numbers expected to drop further, the effects on students and staff could be drastic.

According to the US Census Bureau, there is a significant decrease in college-age people in New Jersey. By 2028, the population between the ages of 18-24 is expected to drop almost 10 percent.

This impacts colleges and universities, because little incoming students mean little incoming money.

Classes, tuition prices, and staff could be compromised.

In October 2015, Rider University cut 13 majors because of the enrollment decline. Over 20 faculty members have been laid off. Enrollment has decreased nine percent overall in the past five years, and the freshmen class has decreased by 14 percent since 2014.

Statistics like these affect students’ futures. Students may not be able to take the classes they need due to budget cuts, and it would affect programs and student services offered. According to NJ News, community colleges will be deeply impacted.

“We are doing everything in our power to not only bring in more students, but to keep the ones we have,” said Stacey Clapp, senior manager of publications/public relations at Atlantic Cape Community College. “We have implemented special strategies to encourage students to attend, and graduate from Atlantic Cape.”

Clapp described how the college relations team is using social media to attract potential students. The college now has a Facebook account,

Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat. The team hopes to relate to students through digital communication, because “that’s how students become aware in modern day.”

The team even targets students enrolled at other colleges. “New Jersey is a large exporter state,” said Clapp. “What we forget is, these students come home for break, and want to take extra classes to get ahead. If they take a class or two at Atlantic Cape, that’s more money going toward programs.”

Atlantic Cape also partners with three universities, and according to Clapp, it attracts more students to the college. Atlantic Cape partners with Fairleigh Dickinson, Rutgers, and now Stockton.

“An applicant doesn’t receive a standard rejection letter anymore,” said Clapp. “What they receive is an invitation to earn an Associate’s degree from Atlantic Cape, and if they meet certain criteria, they can earn their Bachelor’s at their dream school, whether it be Fairleigh Dickinson, Rutgers, or Stockton.”

Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ has also considered the effects of the enrollment decline. The university recently hired 23 student advisors, and

is very confident in their programs to counteract the decline. “We are very, very aware of the statistics,” said Luci Nurkowski, executive admissions coordinator. “We are on top of it. Our new programs give us an edge.”

Rowan also partners with Burlington and Gloucester County Colleges to bring in more students. With the guarantee of admission with a 2.5 GPA average maintained in community college, Rowan hopes to add to their student population of over 14,000.

Recently, Rowan President Dr. Ali Hushmaund introduced 3-year degree programs, so students can enter the working world at a faster pace with less debt. The university will now offer majors such accounting, psychology, radio/TV/film, and marketing during the summer semester, so students can take classes year-round.

Dr. Hushmaund promised students that if they enroll in 2016 summer classes, housing will be free.

Less college-age people mean less jobs to fill. College budgets change.

But according to Atlantic Cape Community College and Rowan University, strategic marketing and programs will both empower and maintain the student population.

Although this phrase is uttered jokingly by many golfers, recreational golfers who’ve reached their plateau have had very few other options, until now.

“If recreational golfers insist on following the rules used by the PGA Tour, there’s little they can do to immediately improve their game,” says John Hoeflich, executive director, of the United States Recreational Golf Association (USRGA). “However, if they play by USRGA rules, they do have the option to switch to better equipment.”

The USRGA is the official organization that governs recreational golf. Its rules allow the use of higher-performance golf equipment.

Hoef lich estimates that more than half of U.S. golfers agree with the USRGA rules that permit equipment that “puts fun back in the game, speeds up play and helps achieve better scores.”

Callaway Golf started the recreational equipment movement in 2000 with the ERC II driver.

Now Polara Golf is advancing the movement with its Advantage driver and Ultimate Straight golf balls -- both engineered to eclipse the PGA limits, which means you can’t play them in the Masters or U.S. Open.

David Felker, chief technology officer for Polara Golf, explains, “Our drivers and balls are not intended for the top amateur players and professionals. We purposely designed equipment that exceeds the performance limits accepted by the PGA Tour, so that recreational golfers can experience less frustration, score lower and have more fun.”

A 2012 Google consumer survey revealed that 63 percent of

respondents would consider using golf equipment that provides a performance advantage. This sentiment is shared by the PGA of America president, Ted Bishop, who says, “I think anything we can do to relax the rules, if it means putting non-conforming equipment in the hands of players that enable them to hit the ball higher and farther and enjoy the game more -- what’s the problem?”

According to the National Golf Foundation, golf rounds have fallen by 8 percent since 2007, largely due to the frustrations of the game, excessive play times and high costs.

“The technology now exists to make golf more pleasurable for everyone,” says Felker. “Who doesn’t want to have more fun?”

Hometown Hero: Marrissa Hacker

Stockton student building community for special needs individuals

“D

espite our unique differences, everyone supports each other in pursuit of their dreams. It’s a place of inclusion. It’s a place of friendship. It’s a place where everyone belongs.”

MarrissaHacker smiles as she describes her success. The 19-year-old brushes away her thick-brown curls. She gazes across Stockton University’s vast lobby as she elaborates.

“We are building a community,” said Hacker. “We’re teaching people to accept others for who they are”.

Fantastic Friends, an organization started by Hacker in 2011, brings together individuals with special needs with friendly volunteers for fun-filled activities. The organization hosts monthly parties for families impacted by special needs, and even have special events and support meetings for siblings.

Hacker, a 19 year old at Stockton, is from Voorhees. She studies business, and dreams about attending graduate school in San Francisco. She loves music, meditation, and meeting new people.

Hacker was inspired to start the organization by her twin brother, Matthew.

She describes a “special twin connection” between her and her brother, and she could sense his frustrations in not being able to communicate or express emotion.

Matthew has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a developmental disorder affecting social skills and sensory processing. As a result, he wasn’t able to talk or make friends normally.

Today, Hacker runs two chapters of Fantastic Friends. The “South Jersey” chapter operates out of Voorhees in the Cherry Hill area. The second chapter is Stockton-based, accessing families in Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean counties. It aims to “celebrate uniqueness and create friendships”.

Marrissa Hacker, in Space Shuttle T-shirt, founded Fantastic Friends, an organization that brings together individuals with special needs with friendly volunteers for fun-filled activities, like bowling.

According to Hacker, the community has been very supportive of her organization. She has recently been featured in Family Circle magazine, USA Today, and the Huffington Post. Fantastic Friends has also partnered with another local special needs non-profit organization, Heart of Surfing.

Miranda Smith, 13, is one of the many who attended last month’s Winter Groove dance. Tonya Smith, Miranda’s mother, was really pleased with the organization.

“The event was so necessary”, she said. “There was socialization, but no pressure. They made us feel comfortable.

It was really cute.”

Hacker dreams big. Fantastic Friends will be adding two more chapters - one

in upstate New York and another in Connecticut. Her group has reached out to Grammy winner Bruno Mars to perform at their annual prom in May, and are optimistic about his response.

On April 16, Fantastic Friends will be partnering with Youth Service America and the Friendship House for Global Youth Service Day, the largest global youth volunteer day of the year.Join Fantastic Friends for some pizza and fun games to benefit the Friendship House of PA. The only cost is to bring a new stuffed animal, which will benefit foster children in the Friendship House.

bsecon Lighthouse and Lighthouse Keeper’s Museum, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. Atlantic City. Open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Parking is free.

Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest masonry lighthouse in the country. Used from 1857 to 1933, it represents a part of Atlantic City’s nautical past. For those unable to climb, there is a live feed from the top of the tower. The attached museum includes exhibits on Fresnel lenses.

Urgency or Emergency?

How to pick where to go for medical attention

hen unexpected health mishaps arise, many people’s first reaction is to head to an emergency room. But when those illnesses and injuries aren’t true emergencies, not knowing the best option for care can end up costing both time and money.

So how can you know where to go when medical attention is needed?

Urgency or emergency?

Urgent care centers provide a way to keep up with patients’ daily healthcare needs, serving as a vital link between the emergency room and primary care physicians.

“Urgent care is growing across the country because it provides patients with an alternative to the emergency room, which can be too costly and time-consuming for situations like common illnesses and minor injuries,” said Dr. Robert Kimball, president of the board of directors, Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA).

“While ERs are best equipped to handle life-threatening illnesses and injuries, it’s important that patients are aware that there are more affordable options available for less serious situations.”

Due to shorter wait times – 90 percent of urgent care centers offer a wait time of 30 minutes or less, according to the 2015 UCAOA Benchmarking Survey – and much lower prices, urgent care centers are a more convenient and affordable option than, but not a substitute for, an emergency room.

When care is needed for true emergency situations, such as heart attacks, strokes, major bleeding or severe burns, it’s vital to go to an emergency room immediately, as urgent care centers are not equipped or designed to treat lifeor limb-threatening conditions.

Dollars and sense When patients visit an emergency room for a non-emergency, they risk incurring a substantial financial loss.

Emergency rooms are more expensive, charging an average of $1,300 for treatment of non-life-threatening situations, while urgent care centers charge an average of just $150, according to a Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

Plus, 27 percent of all emergency room visits could take place at an urgent care center, which would save American consumers approximately $4.4 billion annually, according to

Understanding the options “With a growing variety of facilities available, patients need to take care to understand their options,” Kimball said. “The rise of free-standing emergency rooms is especially concerning because they look like urgent care centers. While they may seem convenient at the time, the emergency room prices can cause sticker shock for patients who aren’t aware of the distinction.”

Free-standing emergency rooms are not physically connected to a hospital and are located in areas similar to urgent care centers, so it can be easy to confuse the two. A free-standing emergency room will offer emergency care – and charge emergency room prices. Patients should be sure to confirm the type of facility they’re visiting, as treatment at a free-standing ER may cost thousands of dollars more than an urgent care center.

“Field Of Dreams” Getting Ready To Play Ball

B

aseball season is starting up, not just for the major leagues, not just for high schools and not just for little league. Field of Dreams is getting ready to provide accessibility and fun to kids with disabilities.

With 285 players and 14 teams, the program offers a true recreational baseball experience to kids who are usually forgotten, or unable to play for other teams.

Registration and concession are completely free of charge. The field, located in Absecon, is wider than a traditional baseball field and a big fence sits in the middle of right field, and if a ball is hit over, it’s a home run.

John Glassey remembers how Field of Dreams began. The 68 year-old worked with kids and adults in Bacharach rehabilitation in the 1970s. Back then, there weren’t many programs or assis-

tance or accessibility for people with disabilities.

One of the ways Glassey would help his patients was through sports. He said he loved seeing the smiles on their faces.

He attended the first ever Special Olympics convention, and was instrumental in the program’s startup in New Jersey.

Today, Glassey works with Field of Dreams, and raves about the rela-

tionships he has with players. He jokes with them. The players taunt each other about batting averages and rivalry, just like any other team.

“We treat them like regular people, because they are regular people, only with a few differences,” he said.

“Everyone has strengths, and everyone has weaknesses. But we don’t define them as their weakness. They aren’t defined by their handicaps, they are defined by who they are as a person.”

Field of Dreams recently opened a wheelchair accessible playground and mini-golf course. They plan to construct an accessible 5k track next year in hopes of not only motivating people with special needs to be athletic, but for outside groups to raise money for the programs.

“We don’t know what we can’t do,” said Glassey. “So we just keep doing it.”

he computer revolution of the last two decades has transformed lives from a pay phone to every person carrying a cell phone, only being able to do tasks on your computer at work to everyone owning a computer at home, using a tablet to get the latest news, accessing your data from any device over the cloud, using technology to record several shows at once and being able to watch when you want, to not be able to start your car if the computer in your car is not working, to needing computer skills to apply for a job! WOW how things have changed.

No other industry has had an impact on every aspect of everything, everywhere. So if you are still saying to yourself: technology is the future, you are seriously behind in everything.

Being able to communicate globally and have access to the world’s information available at your fingertips is the norm. With increasing digitization, knowing how to operate computers has almost become a basic survival skill. In this article we will cover two important topics: Working with computer hardware and learning how to use an operating system.

1. Working with Computer Hardware Using the mouse/touchpad and keyboard.

Making the transition to comput-

ers can feel intimidating at first. The mouse can feel patently unintuitive and the touchpad (which does the same job as the mouse) can be incredibly difficult to work with. The first step is to familiarize yourself with basic computer hardware. Feel free to pick up the mouse and move it around.

It’s okay if you can’t make sense of what’s happening on-screen, the old adage: practice makes perfect is so appropriate. For now, focus on being physically comfortable with the mouse, especially if you are using a laptop with the touchpad. The same applies for the keyboard. Try typing your name on the keyboard, one key at a time. You might make mistakes, but remember that unlike typewriters, undoing things on computers is as easy as pressing the ‘backspace’ key!

2. Learning How to Use an Operating System Think of an operating system (OS) as the program that lets you communicate with the computer. The majority of you will start your computer experience with Windows, the operating system built by Microsoft. For the purpose of this article, we will assume that you are using Microsoft Windows.

To use an operating system effectively, you should be able to perform the following: Finding, running and closing a program.

How to save files in folders and organize your data.

Saving and Printing a file.

Using Windows Explorer to find and open a file.

Shutting down and restarting a computer.

ny angler 16 and older must have a valid license to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey. This includes privately owned lakes and other waters. The fee is $22.50 for ages 1664; seniors pay $12.50. Non-resident fishing license for ages 16 and up is $34. Resident trout stamp is $10.50.

Non-resident trout stamp is $20. Seven-day vacation fishing license (nonresidents only) is $19.50. Two-day vacation fishing (nonresidents only) is $9. Fishing is permitted on the beaches, outside of guarded areas, and from the jetties. The seawall along Sunset Avenue is a popular area for crabbing or fishing from land in the back bay. A

municipal boat launch (fee required) is located at Albany Avenue and Boulevard Avenue.

Margate Amherst Avenue, bet ween Decatur and Monroe avenues, is home to several marinas and bait and tackle shops, including small boat rentals. Surf fishing is permitted during non-guarded hours.

Ventnor/Ventnor Heights The Ventnor City Fishing Pier is located at Cornwall Avenue and the Boardwalk. The fishing pier offers seasonal rates for fishing or sightseeing.

For additional information, call the piermaster at (609) 823-7944. Along the back bay, a seawall the length of Winchester Avenue is perfect for the family to fish or crab from land. A free boat ramp is located on the bay on Dorset Avenue, where there is plenty of free parking. For more information call (609) 823-7900.

Somers Point John F. Kennedy Park, located on Broadway, offers a boat ramp (fee required) granting access to Great Egg Harbor Bay. Another ramp (fee required) is located at Smith’s Marina, 910 Bay Ave. Along the Bay Front Historic District on Bay Avenue there are several marinas which are home to many party and charter boats.

There is also a crabbing and fishing pier located on the bay off New Jersey Avenue. Restrooms are located nearby.

The old Brigantine Bridge, across Absecon Inlet from Harrah’s Marina, is used as a fishing pier. A public boat ramp (fee required) is located at Sixth and Bayshore avenues on the bay. Leeds Point Seasonal fishing and crabbing are permitted in designated areas of both the Brigantine and Barnegat Divisions of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

These areas include saltwater fishing (from land) at Gravelling Point, Little Beach (with permit), Parkertown Dock Road, Cedar Run Dock Road, and Stafford Avenue.

Boats may be launched at the Brigantine Division’s Scotts Landing boat ramp, located at the end of Scotts Landing Road, off Moss Mill Road at Leeds Point. Freshwater fishing is permitted on Lily Lake in Oceanville. For more information call (609) 652-1665.

Cure for Spring Fever?

Reorganize, Refresh, Renew GUEST COLUMN

bout this time of year, the buds start to appear on the trees, the weather begins to warm and it becomes more and more difficult to pay attention to our daily routines. Why? SPRING FEVER: What is it? The definition of spring fever, a term used since 1843 according to Merriam-Webster is: “A feeling of wanting to go outdoors and do things because spring is coming and the weather is getting warmer. A lazy or restless feeling often associated with the onset of spring.”

Not such a bad thing, unless that excitement interferes with your ability to sit, listen and learn. I am not just referring to our children. Adults also experience the effects of spring fever.

If this is a term that began being used in 1843, then I am wondering why there isn’t a cure. Much has been written about the topic and research is available if you are interested in searching for it. But what to do about it?

As I read through various research and parenting articles that referenced spring fever, a common theme began to evolve. First, the onset of spring fever is inevitable.

The name tells us when it will take place, so all we have to do is prepare for its onset right? Well, yes in fact preparation is important. Knowing it will happen and when is the easy part. This year I began to see robins in the field across from my house in late February. My first thought was, yeah spring, my next thought was oh no spring fever.

Spring fever actually relates to internal biologic systems. Our internal neurotransmitter levels, protein receptors, hormonal balance and basal metabolic rate all make seasonal shifts. It causes an internal change that leads to an increase in energy or can also cause emotional discomfort and even despair. Being aware of how you and your family respond to these changes helps you to be better prepared.

Preparing for spring may make you think about what seeds to order, checking on your perennial garden, and raking the leaves out of the flower beds. But for parents of children no matter what age, the onset of spring is the cue to begin planning for changes. Parents need to provide

maximum support and allow for some minimum expectations during this period of transition.

Here are some general tips for learning to adjust to spring fever which might actually lead to a cure for your family.

Try to keep schedules and routines as consistent as possible, but leave a little wiggle room. Outdoor sports with practice and game schedules begin and we need to make adjustments to meal time and homework time. Bedtimes usually change as well especially since it is daylight longer. It is important to keep sleep patterns consistent.

If your family is not involved in outdoor activities, now is the time to start. Encourage outdoor activities and make them educational. Go and explore nature, go to the local county park, or visit historical sites, but get out and go. Learning does not have to stop and burning off that excess energy helps to maintain healthy sleep patterns. Now is a great time to check the bicycle tires and helmets so when you’re ready, so is the equipment you’ll want to use.

Help your children make the transition from spring break back to school again. Use a calendar to check off the days as the break comes to a close and school starts back. Create new family schedules that are visible and include outdoor activities, homework time, and bedtime. If you usually made homework completion the first thing on the list try switching it to play first then homework especially while the sun is still shining.

You can set goals for homework completion and provide incentives.

Remember the rule of thumb for homework is about ten to fifteen minutes of homework per grade level.

Using a reward system for homework completion is a great tool and one that just may make life easier. Rewards do not have to cost you a dime.

Remember, the greatest reward you can give to your child is your undivided time and attention.

Spring is time for growth and that relates to body changes and clothing. Use this time to go through the old, unused, or undersized items.

You and your child can reorganize their clothing. Don’t forget the toys.

Spring cleaning is often associated with spring fever. Together you and your child can reorganize clothing, and move bedroom furniture around to create a ‘new space’. Teach your

children the benefits of donating to others the items they no longer can use.

Finally, recognize that we as the adults also experience spring fever and we model and teach our children how to adjust to these changes. Our behavior is a perfect example to our children about how to handle change.

Set the tone, stay positive and structured. Make the most of this transitional time to reorganize, refresh and renew your family time. You may just create new family traditions that allow you to celebrate this changing time of year.
