It is all very good news for Atlantic City with the creation of 1000 construction jobs and 3000 permanent jobs. The casino oor will be completely redesigned to create a total entertainment center. All the hotel rooms will undergo renovation. The Mark Etess Arena concert hall will keep it's name, but will also be fully renovated. This is best news for Atlantic City in a very long time.

Autism. Riding The Wave From the Editor

For many years, when we would struggle to find accommodations for my son, I would think, “Someone should do this,” or, “Why doesn’t someone do that?”

When I was 46 years old, I finally realized that I am a someone. If there was a need for something that didn’t exist yet, I could create it myself.

As a result, our family started a 501c3 nonprofit organization called Heart of Surfing, which provides free surfing every Saturday for families with autism and other special needs. We quickly added skateboarding on Saturdays in the spring and the fall. Incredible volunteers have donated their time week after week and the local surf community and surf shops have helped us in every way possible.

Those four words changed our lives forever. Today, 1 in 49 parents in New Jersey will hear those same words. In recent years, the prevalence of autism has skyrocketed, and New Jersey leads the country with the highest rate of diagnoses.

Our son was born in 1994. When he was diagnosed in 1996, he was on the leading edge of the autism tidal wave. At this point, most people had never even heard of autism, and very few people knew someone who had been diagnosed.

The programs and supports that are readily available today did not exist yet.

The support of our community has allowed us to grow and thrive, and we are fortunate to make new connections and discover new opportunities all the time.

We have introduced yoga, sensory friendly rollerskating and ice skating, and art classes. Our special needs surfers have had the opportunity to participate in local surf contests, including Chip Miller Surf Fest, Dean Randazzo Surf for a Cause, and the Surf Rodeo. NPN, a local surf club, planned their first annual Heart of Surfing Contest in 2015. This event raises funds for Heart of Surfing and includes our special needs surfers in the event. Seeing our surfers encouraged by some of this area’s best surfers and hearing the crowd cheer as they catch a wave is one of the most heartwarming

feelings I’ve experienced. This year, one of our surfers even had the opportunity to join his high school’s surf team.

We are so fortunate to live in a community that stands with us in creating opportunities for families with autism.

April is Autism Awareness Month.

Lucy the Elephant: Fake Elephant, True Story

T

he year is 1881. Atlantic City is beginning to boom with tourists coming for the healing powers of the sea breeze and the spectacular scenery. Real estate in AC, as you can imagine, was getting snatched up quick by opportunistic business men.

Enter our hero, James V. Lafferty.

At only 25 years old, Lafferty arrived in Margate, a stretch of land five miles outside of AC, with plans to make a fortune on real estate. So, to get customers to come and check out the surrounding area, Lafferty had to come up with something big. And he did. Literally.

Construction quickly began on the elephant-shaped building (not yet known as Lucy) and became the talk of the town.

The purpose of the building was to be Lafferty’s office where potential clients could come up and actually look out on the land and see the opportunity. The only windows out to the land were through the elephant’s eyes which was just the cherry on top of this wild idea. Word quickly spread since it sat near the beach in the view of sailors coming in to the ports.

People would show up out of curiosity and Lafferty would try and sell them. So,

everybody came to see it and Lafferty got rich. The end, right? Nope!

The truth is that Lafferty’s business fell apart. In addition to some of his other properties, Lafferty was forced to sell the building in 1887. It wasn’t until 1900 that the Margate elephant became known as Lucy the Elephant, and over the years, it had been used as a tavern, hotel, restau-

rant and even a party venue. Owners came and went, the community grew and grew and history changed all around as Lucy sat on the beach, not getting the kind of attention that was originally intended.

By the 1960s, Lucy was a mess and was scheduled for demolition. The end.

Enter Edwin T. Carpenter and a group of citizens called the Margate

Civic Association, our new heroes.

They were told to either move Lucy or it would be torn down. Oh, and they only had 30 days to move it. This ragtag group of concerned community members went door-to-door and held fund-raising events, eventually raising enough money to move Lucy. Then, in 1970, the Margate elephant was moved to where it is today. Lucy also got refurbished since the original wooden frame was falling apart. To make matters even better, Lucy was designated a National Historic Landmark.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of AC and surrounding areas pretty hard. Many are still putting their lives back together after significant damage to their homes and businesses.

Margate was right in Sandy’s warpath, however – here comes the best part of the story – Lucy the Elephant went unharmed. This only adds to (let’s get emotional here for a minute) Lucy’s symbolic status of the strength and spirit of Atlantic City. What started as just a business venture has turned into a reminder of what really made AC a resort: imagination.

Somers Point to Host ‘April in Paris’

T

he City of Somers Point announces the first Annual ‘April in Paris’ event, with Frenchthemed activities taking place throughout the city from Friday, April 7 through Sunday, April 9 at various locations and times. ▶Friday, April 7 Events Kicking off the weekend’s events on Friday, April 7, will be beginner’s lessons in conversational French at Gregory’s Restaurant Dining Room, 900 Shore Road, from 1- 2:15 p.m. Shirley Shields, an associate professor of ESL, English & Modern Language will provide the lessons on casual French conversation about food, shopping, numbers and more. A French-inspired lunch special along with the regular menu will be available for order from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the lessons. Lessons will also take place on Friday, April 14, 21, and 28.

Also on Friday, April 7 from noon – 5 p.m. is the ‘L’Art de France’, presented by the Great Bay Gallery, 829 Bay Avenue, including an artist meet and greet at 5 p.m. and a complimentary wine-tasting sponsored by SJ Wine Friends. Wawa – The Good and Bad News

S

outh Jersey’s favorite convenience store and a key part of our landscape announced some changes. The 750 store chain is expanding this summer in Central and Northern NJ and now in six states.

First: The Bad news that the store on Tilton Road in Pep Boys Plaza is reportedly closing at the end of April.

The good news: A new SuperWawa is set to open in Early May at the corner of Pomona Road and Route 30 in Galloway.

Many of the Tilton road store employees will be working there.

The Mays Landing store located at 5201 Harding highway is closed for renovations and will reopen April 21.

Somers Point/Shore Road will be closing for renovations on April 21 and reopening in the middle of May.

The small store on Tilton Road is shutting it's doors.

Church Easter Play Returns Home

C

eleste Herse, the director of Praise Tabernacle’s annual Easter play, agrees with the famous line from The Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home!”

The play entitled “A Portrait of our Savior” returned home to Praise Tabernacle last year after several years of performances at Atlantic Cape Community College.

The play was originally held at the church for its first nine years and then moved to the college venue to connect with a different audience. After 5 years on the road, the director and her crew have now returned to their home stage. Herse shared that “The cast loves performing the play again at our

home church. And we’re hoping that the surrounding community will come out and join us in this celebration of the resurrection.”

Pastor Steve Rahter, who portrays the Prophet/Narrator in the story, added that “We brought in some new cast members as well as some familiar faces for this year’s performance.”

Hometown Hero: Bernie Laleyan with the proceeds going go to their school. The customers get to enjoy the taste of locally grown, peppers in their favorite entres. “It’s win- win all around,” exclaims Laleyan. “The best part is that it keeps the students busy and learning, even through the summer months.”

Laleyan’s granddaughter, Arieanna Stanley, is 9 years old and a third-grade student. Laleyan first approached school principal Ted Pugliese with his idea. “We value experiential activities and authentic learning so it is a perfect fit,” said Pugliese. Laleyan then recruited businesses to sponsor Bill Hurst, owner of Fitzpatrick's Deli and Steakhouse preparing pepper quesadillas for all the students and staff at the Pepper Project.

All seeds, supplies the school.. and materials were The Pepper Project begins with donated. Some of the community the students at St. Joseph Regional donors include Fitzpatricks Deli and School in Somers Point. They plant Steakhouse, Grilled Cheese and Crab peppers seeds, cultivate and harvest Cake Co., Shore Hardware, Home the peppers. Then they sell their Depot, Lowes and Shoprite. The restaurants that purchase and use the peppers are Fitzpatrick’s Deli and Steakhouse, Grilled Cheese and Crab Cake Co., Crab Trap, Juliano’s, Ventura’sOffshore Cafe, Anchorage Tavern and Michelli’s Pizza.

The Pepper Project was such a success in its first year that this year included a kick-off celebration held at St. Joesph’s Wednesday, March 29th. Bill Hurst, the owner of Fitzpatrick’s Deli and Steakhouse, came in and cooked pepper quesadillas for the students so they could taste their harvested peppers. Seeds were planted and there was an ex-

citement in the air. Six more herbs are being added as requested by the restaurant owners.

Principal Pugliese mentioned expanding involvement to the upper grades to incorporate math skills with the purchasing and business aspects to the project.

Laleyan lives with his wife, Pamela in Somers Point. He is a retired banquet bartender at Bally’s Casino where he worked for 37 years. When he is not working on the Pepper Project, you might find him in his own garden where he grows tomato plants.

Free Yoga at the Boy’s & Girl’s Club in AC

I

will let you in on a secret: up until a couple months ago, I had never been to a real yoga class.

My entire “practice” consisted of pulling up a random YouTube video, doing 10 minutes of it (probably the wrong way) and then stopping to do something else. I am someone who absolutely HATES exercise, but when I found out about this new class in Atlantic City that is offered free by Grace & Glory Yoga., I decided to give it a try myself! Here’s 5 reasons why you should totally join me next week: 1. It’s FREE. Zero dollars. Come as you are. Literally all you need to bring is an open mind, and wear some clothes that you can move in.

They provide the mats, the blocks, the instruction, and even the water and fruit for afterwards! (Feel free to bring your own stuff if you have it already.)

2. It’s for ALL levels. This class is designed for all ages and all levels so don’t be intimidated if you’ve never done a yoga pose in your entire life.

There are several instructors to help you and they talk you through the entire process. If you’re a seasoned yogi, you will fit right in, too! There are plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself.

3. Speaking of challenging yourself, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. My favorite thing is the guided talk, encouraging us to be present and to be aware of our bodies. These classes have been an incredible way for me to push my body past what I thought it was capable of, without a personal trainer screaming in my face until I cry and give up like at a traditional gym. If you can’t physically do a certain pose, the instructors will help you do a modification or show you a resting pose. The most important thing is to listen to your body and what it’s telling you. This room isn’t heated like traditional yoga studios.

4. It feels really good. Not only do my muscles feel strong, but my mind feels strong as well. I have made friends in class and their support and encouragement give me the strength I need to recognize that being good to my body is not just being physical and active, but it is having the willpower to feed it healthy foods and do away with negative self talk. In a world full

of scary politics, violence, and despair, this is where you can come to quiet

all the external drama and focus on yourself, if only for an hour.

5. This is a movement bigger than ourselves, but it needs us to thrive. These classes take place inside the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City Building and participants range from toddlers to seniors. No babysitter?

Bring the kids. You’ll be surprised at how much they love it! (Bonus: the rest of the day, you’ll

see a difference in behavior in your child – I know I did when I brought my 5 year old!) I’m finding it difficult to put into words the feeling that I get when I look around class and see such a diverse group of community members working together to make the world a better place, if only through some yoga. It’s heartwarming, it’s empowering, it’s necessary.

Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust

“Y

ou want to be the winter fairy or the summer fairy?,” they ask one another. This is a serious decision. My two daughters are asking each other this question for the umpteenth time. I already know the answer, but they’re having this discussion as if it is the first time ever.

They watch the Tinkerbell movie “The Secret of the Wings” and they feel that they are the 2 sisters portrayed in the movie. The funny thing is they really are just like these sisters.

At 22 months apart, now ages 8 and 6 they’re at this age where the 8 year old is steering toward what is referred

to as the ‘tween’ years and my 6 year old is clinging on tightly.

My 6 yr old is on the autism spectrum, but she is high functioning and is alwaus on the go. Let me tell you. She absolutely loves her big. Sister.

I can see this is becoming an “issue” of sorts. They can’t stand to be together but they can’t stand to be apart. I say “Well then leave each other alone” and they look at me like I have baby chickens crawling out of my ears. Apparently it is me that is crazy. Some of the things I hear in my house on a regular basis are: “She is in my room.”, “She touched my stuff”, “She is on ‘my’ couch”, “I don’t want to watch this show,””She is singing too loud,””She doesn’t even know the right words to the song” and just recently, “She is eating too loud.”

I was in the kitchen unloading the dishwasher and I heard the quarrel erupt. I interjected “What seems to be the hub-bub?”

My 6 yr old to said to me “Whats a sub-jub?” “What’s the problem?” I said as I looked down. I see that they’re fighting over what appears to be a Tinkerbell doll

that is now half-dressed with knots in her hair. My 8 yr old exclaims, “I don’t even want it really, I don’t play with it.” I am now stumped. I am confused about why the doll looks like she was in some sort of horrible accident?”

My 6 yr old, “yeah, we let her have it.”

She looks at Tinkerbell, strokes her hair.

Then she looks at me and says “What’s a shub-bub?”

“Please stop fighting. We’re all we got. We’re family. We love one another.

Let’s hug this out,” I plead. My oldest rolls her eyes. I am obviously not cool.

So I try to I put my hands in the middle, “Come on, Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust!, Right?” Now she’s embarrassed.

“Mom,” she moans. I am secretly laughing a tiny bit inside because it is a little funny.

So instead I say: “Look you guys, you want to help me unload the dishwasher or get blondie here fixed up?” My oldest immediately starts to change her tune and gets to a fixing up Blondie. Meanwhile, my 6 year old in a pixie dust winter fairy hot second runs in the kitchen. I hear a bang. I put my

hand to my forehead. Better be careful what I wish for. She was unloading the dishwasher all over the kitchen floor.

At least she was trying to help.

The moral of the story is that whether you have special needs or not, on the spectrum or not, our lives really don’t differ on most some days.

April is Autism Awareness Month.

We need to also know that we are more alike than different. All of the day to day stuff can be overwhelming, but we all have stuff. We as human beings and families have more in common than we may realize. We’re truly in this together. We do not get to decide who does or doesn’t have ‘what’. We can only decide to ‘be’ together as a community and be nice to one another, truly nice. We all have bad days and good days.

When we see each other in the community, one of the most powerful things we can do is simply be ourselves and be kind. Don’t leave anyone out.

Sam is a Mom of 2 girls, 8 and 6. Her 6 year old with special needs has a service dog. Her 8 yr old loves street hockey, they both love to surf and do karate.

Sam hopes to take a nap someday. For now the whole tribe resides loudly in Northfield.

n 1966 The Green Hornet Show sparked a sense of wonder in the imagination of six year old boy named Tom Mitchell. As an adult, Tom inspires that wonder himself by embodying the Green Hornet spirit at events like the OC Con festival this past weekend.

As a child Tom daydreamed about the show starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee, but he especially loved The Black Beauty car which he considered the show’s 3rd hero. “It was all I could think about,” he said. In 2004, while online Tom rediscovered his passion for The Black Beauty on a fan forum. He showed his wife Karen who saw the twinkle it put in his eyes, then set out and find the base car of The Black Beauty to surprise him with for his birthday. “The next thing I knew a white rusty 1966 Chrysler Imperial was delivered to our driveway,” said Tom. Unfortunately Tom had no experience renovating cars so he assembled a team of six childhood friends who joined him to become a build team

A

tlantic City Mayor Don Guardian is optimistic the city’s skate park, demolished late last month, can be rebuilt for the summer. The new park will be rebuilt to code, he told Route 40 in an interview.

The park, which had been used by skaters from in and around the city, was assembled over the course of a few years on an old street hockey rink on Sovereign Avenue, overlooking the bay. The equipment – a rail, a ramp, some cans and blocks – never had the sign-off of the city’s planning department. It was a makeshift development built by and for the skaters that used it.

After the park was demolished without warning, Mayor Guardian met with Jason Klotz, one of the original architects of the park known as Back Sov, to talk about how the project might be rebuilt. Klotz and his colleagues need to attend the city’s planning board meeting to present their plans for the new park, Mayor Guardian said. The Mayor was impressed that Klotz already had funding and volunteers organized to do the work. (Klotz had raised more than $3,500 on Go Fund Me earlier this month for an addition to the park, before it was razed. Now that money will be put toward rebuilding the park, he told followers on Instagram).

Mayor Guardian said that usually money is the hurdle to developing something like a skate park in a city like Atlantic City (which was taken over by the state last year, because of its precarious financial situation).

“Should the planning committee approve the project, Jason is trying

to shoot for construction in May or June,” the Mayor said. Most of the work can be done with a volunteer workforce but the city might be able to lend a hand for jobs such as pouring concrete, the Mayor added. The city could also help by removing a

batting cage that was left in the middle of the skate park site, he added.

“Let’s build a much better park and let’s do it so it is going to last 20 years,” the Mayor said. The park is important because kids love to skate and it gives them something to do, he added.

Klotz, on Instagram, wrote that he was confident the city’s planning department would OK the project because the city has already expressed its support. The next step will be to get insurance for the site, he wrote.

It is still unclear who is responsible for demolishing the park. The city has pointed a finger at the state, which is currently in charge of city management. The state has not commented.

L

ast night my wife put her head on my shoulder and said, “I’m not tired, tell me a story.� This has been a practice that has repeated itself countless times over our 38 years of marriage.

No matter how tired I was, I managed to mumble the beginnings of how I spent my formative years. It seems like I have been blessed or cursed, depending on the situation with an uncanny knack for remembering the smallest of details which gave life to these stories. They covered years when my brother and I shared a bedroom until my torturing of him by

faking nightmares forced my parents to finish the attic and banish me to my new bedroom. There I would deal with my own fears while the shadows of the trees morphed into the most sinister of forms.

Then there were all the stories of summers at the beach riding rafts filled with air and eating sandwiches with a sprinkle of sand in them. I would tell her how as teens, we would drag race down Atlantic Avenue in Margate. My best friend, Paul had his mother’s car and he would gun the engine when we pulled up alongside a rumbling muscle car. We sunk down in our seats since Paul’s mother had a Chevy Corvair and sounded like a vacuum cleaner when the engine was revved. Needless to say, we were always left smelling burnt rubber before we turned down the next street to avoid meeting our competition at the next light.

↘Continued from 24 “borrowing” the coaches boat one dark night to paint the MHS CREW on the bridge abutment by a marina about a mile upriver. This resulted in being chased back down river by marina boats with floodlights. They thought we stole something from the marina and we managed to escape by powering the boat through some brush along the shoreline. Next day the coach didn’t say anything but flogged us relentlessly up and down the river. Perhaps he suspected something when he saw paint drippings down the side of the boat and the cracked windshield.

Also during my college years, I worked with my friends, Paul and Mike as lifeguards and cabana boys at the Warwick and Plaza apartments in Atlantic City. My wife listened intently while I described our behavior those summer years. We became quite proficient at devising schemes to coax tips out of the wealthy residents. We knew who the big tippers were by name and anticipated their every need. We also knew the stiffs by name who became invisible to us.

After decades of telling and retelling these stories my repertoire was exhausted. Then we fell asleep to the sounds of the wind blowing through

the trees, of rain falling and waves crashing on the beach via smart phone apps. But recently I hit upon a gold mine. I love to listen to podcasts while I am in the car and I have downloaded a wide variety for my listening pleasure. One of these podcasts is by Mike Rowe. You may know him from the TV shows like Dirty Jobs among others. He also lends his voice to Deadliest Catch show. His podcast is called “The Way I Heard It,” runs 6-10 minutes long and Rowe describes it as “the podcast for people with a curious mind and a short attention span.” These are two qualities I have in abundance. So last night, when my wife put her head on my shoulder and asked me to tell her a story, I reached for my phone and played a Mike Rowe podcast. Even before the podcast was finished, Rowe’s melodious voice lulled her to sleep. Not exactly a dirty job but another job well done by Mike Rowe, nonetheless. At least Mike doesn’t fall asleep before he finishes the story. Thanks, Mike.

here is only one thing you need to know about Smithville Eats and it’s coconut nutella French toast. A friend of mine swears by it so I needed to find out for myself if it’s as good as it sounds. The answer is yes.

Smithville Eats opened in the Smithville Square Shopping Center about three months ago. It’s a bright and cheery breath of fresh air for Smithville. You walk in and are immediately greeted by smiles. The staff is so friendly and makes for a very welcoming atmosphere.

They are open daily from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, serving breakfast and lunch. The menu has something for everyone, from breakfast fare to salads and sandwiches. When I visited recently I knew that I had to try the French toast so I ordered it

for my son while I had a southwest egg wrap with avocado and peppers.

My son practically licked his plate clean. I was able to sneak a couple bites from his plate and agreed that it is out of this world good. The egg wrap was equally delicious and filling, with perfectly cooked hash browns on the side. On my next visit I will most definitely try one of the delicious sounding smoothies. The citrus beet cleanse with roasted beets, fresh orange, carrots, cucumber and almond milk caught my eye.

Smithville Eats is very kid-friendly.

My twins and I went another twins family and they were very accommodating to us. They gave us a spacious round table up front so that everyone was comfortable.

ew Jersey has enjoyed a craft beer explosion in recent years both in terms of quantity and quality; the southern part of the state though has been lagging in comparison with Jersey’s central, coastal, and northern areas. Breweries like Kane and Carton in Monmouth County along with Spellbound and Flying Fish have been dominating the craft beer narrative in the state for the past few years but it’s clear that Tuckahoe Brewing in Egg Harbor Township will soon enjoy a more prominent part of the conversation.

Southern New Jersey is renowned for its coastal communities and shore culture with an emphasis on summer fun. Folks are most familiar with places like Seaside Heights, Point Pleasant, Wildwood, Long Beach Island, and, of course, Atlantic City; the one thing that all of these places has lacked though is

solid craft beer representation. Atlantic City in particular has suffered from an identity crisis of sorts: it plays host to one of if not the single biggest beer event in the state and yet it offers terribly little in the way of original craft beer breweries.

Enter the Tuckahoe Brewing Company.

Located a mere thirteen miles away from the boardwalk in Atlantic City, Tuckahoe is easily the shining star in the area in terms of craft beer. Its reputation has been building steadily with their coffee stout and several IPAs popping up in conversation among craft beer devotees online. Since I was in the area this past weekend I decided to swing by with my buddies to see whether the beer measured up to the hype.

My first impression of the brewery was that it reminded me a lot of several locations that I visited out on Long Island. The aesthetic felt similar from

↘Continued from 26 the layout (which reminded me of Long Ireland Brewing out in Riverhead) to the assortment of beers (which was reminiscent of the Destination Unknown Beer Company in Bayshore). It could be merely a coincidence but I do wonder whether or not the coastal locales of the aforementioned breweries has impacted at least the former if not the latter as well.

Like many other breweries in the state of New Jersey, Tuckahoe requires a tour be taken before any beer can be purchased. This is thanks to some bizarre, draconian legislation that still inexplicably persists (and explains in part why New Jersey still lags behind the rest of the country in terms of craft beer evolution). Most places have found interesting workarounds for its consumers and Tuckahoe is no different.

Upon entering the brewery, imbibers are directed via signs deeper into the brewery where they must obtain an information card before embarking upon a self-guided tour (essentially a walk back to the bar area). Once there they can surrender said card to the bartender to begin their craft beer exploration.

Both the bar and the drinking area are nicely furnished with gorgeous dark-wood tables. The room is spacious and caters to groups of varying size. Our quartet was able to sit together at a tall round table with

four flights and plenty of extra room.

It’s rare for me to be able to try more than a dozen new beers in a single sitting and rarer still for all of those beers to be well above average quality.

I was excited to see that the coffee stout was available on the menu and I was looking forward too to trying the IPAs that I had heard so much about.

We began though with the Angelsea Irish Red ale. As a style, red

ales are difficult to mess up but are consequently also difficult to elevate as well; most are enjoyably sweet, straightforward but unforgettable quaffs. Tuckahoe managed to defy the odds by crafting a remarkably complex, delicious draught in their Irish offering. Sweet, malty caramel dominated the palate with a hint of roast hiding in the back.

The pale ale that we tried next was alright but we hit six home runs in succession immediately afterwards.

The puckering Duck Dive Gose had a brilliant briny bite to it with an unexpected spice finish that didn’t taste like the typical coriander inclusion.

Fete Du Roi was an excellent Belgian Strong Dark Ale (another style that, for my personal preference, is difficult to excel with) and the Steelmantown Porter was a big hit. My favorite hoppy brew of the day came next in the form of Quatrain--an IPA made with El Dorado, Azacca, and Columbus hops. It was super juicy and citrusy but perfectly balanced unlike the many “grapefruit juice in a glass” IPAs that are dominating the scene of late.

I entered the Tuckahoe Brewing Company with tempered expectations and high hopes and walked away with both roundly exceeded. It is one of the rare breweries that masters the quantity and quality combination AND does so at both ends of the hop/ roast spectrum.

Out of sixteen beers thirteen merited grades of A- or better with a whopping SEVEN A+ grades. I was duly impressed with the beers I had the pleasure of trying and because of that I give Tuckahoe brewing a grade of A+--my highest rating--based upon the sheer volume of great beer and the variety therein that we enjoyed during our time there.

2017 Phillies Season Preview

T

he 2017 Phillies come into this season with growing expectations. Last season they won 71 games and finished 4th in the National League East. General Manager Matt Klentak went out and acquired some veterans to help this young team grow.

Howie Kendrick, Pat Neshek and Clay Buchholtz all come over via trades to fill some holes and bring a veteran presence to the clubhouse. Joaquin Benoit and Michael Saunders signed one year deals as free agents to help the bullpen and outfield respectively. Adding these veterans will give a chance for the Phillies top prospects to get some more seasoning in the minor leagues.

Pete Mackanin returns as manager this season and most of his staff are back with the exception of hitting coach Matt Stairs.

He joins the staff from the broadcast booth to help the young hitters try to have more productive at bats. He knows first hand why the Phillies finished at or near the bottom in most offensive categories last season.

I think he will be a real asset to the young hitters.

The starting rotation stays intact with Clay Buchholtz coming over in a trade to round out the fifth and final spot. He brings experience and provides the team with solid depth as you can never have too many start-

ing pitchers. Aaron Nola hopes to rebound after an inconsistent 2016 which led his season to end early due to an elbow injury.

Jeremy Hellickson and Jerad Eickoff are the anchors of the rotation. They both has very solid seasons last year.

The bullpen adds two arms in Pat Neshek and Joaquin Benoit. They add stability to a bullpen that was very shaky toward the end of last season. Jeanmar Gomez did a great job as the closer until he wore down in early August. He saved 37 games a year ago. Hector Neris developed into a great setup man and has all the makings of a future closer. Morgan will occupy spots in middle relief to start off the year.

The everyday lineup will be better with the additions of Howie Kendrick and Michael Saunders. It will be very interesting to see the progress of the young hitters in the lineup. Oduebel Herrera was an All Star last season but his play tailed off toward the end of the season, but on the other hand Cesar Hernandez got better as the year went on.

Maikel Franco needs to be more consistent and needs to put it all together all year long.

Freddy Galvis will look for better at bats this year and try to get on base more often.

Top prospect J.P. Crawford is waiting in

the wings but Galvis wants to make it hard on management to trade him. Cameron Rupp will likely see a bump in playing time this year. He caught 105 games last season and an increase to 140 or so is not out of the question. He hit 16 homers last season.

Tommy Joseph will have his first full major league season. The pop on his bat makes him a potential 30 homer guy.

The bench has some question marks outside of super utility man Andres Blanco.

Andrew Knapp, Aaron Altherr, Daniel Nava and Brock Stassi make up the rest of the bench. Stassi is a former 33rd round draft pick who signed for $1,000. The 27 year old will be making his major league debut and he had tears in his eyes when talking to reporters after he found out that he had made the final 25 man roster. Knapp is a former 2nd round pick who has rose through the minor leagues and he beat out several veterans to earn the backup catching job. Nava came up with the Red Sox and hit a grand slam against the Phillies back in 2010 on the first pitch he ever saw in the big leagues.

The 2017 season has the potential to be a very good one. A realistic goal is to win 81 games which would put them at.500 for the season. They have a good, young nucleus, and within the next year or two they will be contending for the National League East crown.

Growing up with Easter and Passover in Atlantic City

aster was my favorite holiday growing up in Atlantic City in the 1950’s. Two weeks before, I and the others at our elementary school reminded our parents not to crack open our eggs for breakfast in the morning. Instead, we carefully punched tiny holes in our eggs to remove the liquid without breaking them. We could take the empty shells to school and dye them into colorful Easter eggs for our baskets.

Those baskets were made from the empty cardboard cylinders of the Quaker Oats we had our parents buy for breakfast the month before. We spent hours at school turning them into Easter baskets with “library paste” of flour and water, tape, and colorful construction paper.

The walls of every classroom and hallway were decorated with our crayon, water color, and construction paper drawings and decorations in bright spring colors.

And we sang “Easter Parade” written by Jewish composer Irving Berlin for weeks in our classroom and at the assembly just before what was then known as Easter Vacation.

When Easter Sunday finally arrived, our whole family dressed up and walked on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. There we met everyone we knew in every area of our lives with their families, all dressed up in their best outfits. We also knew that

there were judges being pushed in some of the rolling chairs. They were selecting the best dressed couples and families, and awarding cash prizes.

Years later, I learned that this once caused problems. For years, the judges only awarded cash prizes to whites on the Boardwalk. They systematically overlooked many black couples and families who were much better dressed. However, Atlantic City fixed that problem in what was once a typical American way.

Atlantic City was the home of Sarah Spencer Washington. At age 21, she opened

a small beauty parlor on Arctic Avenue in Atlantic City’s black neighborhood. However, she was frustrated by the lack of hair products and cosmetics suitable for African-American hair and skin. She spent years inventing those products, and soon set up franchises and sold them in black neighborhoods throughout America. By the 1920’s, Madame Washington, as she was now known, was a multi-millionaire.

When she saw that blacks were not getting prizes they deserved for being best dressed on the Boardwalk, she handed out her own, bigger cash prizes on the Northside. Within

a few years, blacks and whites were treated equally every Easter in Atlantic City.

I heard that Easter sunrise services on the Steel Pier and Garden Pier were beautiful. However, I was never there.

Our family was Jewish. We instead celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover with a Seder. A Seder is a long service held around the dinner table where the adults read the story of how God freed our ancestors from slavery in Egypt. To seat all the guests, we put tablecloths and plates on every table we had, including our ping pong table. My grandmother always came down from New York.

The Passover Seder usually takes place during Easter Week. That is because Easter and Passover both began as the same holiday. The dates of both holidays are determined by the first full moon in spring. The Last Supper was a Passover Seder. The Hebrew word for Passover is Pesakh. That is why the word for both Easter and Passover is Pascua in Spanish, Pasqua in Italian, and Paskha in Greek and Russian.

At that Seder, my grandmother told stories of Passover and Easter before her family came to America. Grandma was born in the Russian province of Moldavia.

It was a poor and miserable place where Russians, Romanians, Ukranians, and Jews each lived separate lives, spoke different languages, feared and hated each other.

It was very common for Jews there to be beaten or killed during Easter and Passover.

Today, our children are taught that “diversity” is a virtue, and that the America of my generation unjustly imposed a white, Christian culture on everyone. My grandmother would strongly disagree.

She loved dressing up for the Boardwalk every Easter Sunday. At every Passover Seder, she offered a special toast over how wonderful America was, and how lucky we were to live here.

She has toured many five star hotels in India. Soraya also performed at the black tie gala at the official opening of the King Tut exhibit at the Franklin Institute.

“My main goal or ideology is to break down all negative and cultural stereotypes with my own theatrical approach without ever cheapening or debasing this dance and turning it into something it is not. I hope for it to be as respected as Ballet one day, which is what I am striving for as an artist and Anthropologist,” explains Soraya.

She is a graduate of both Atlantic City High School and Stockton Universit, holding degree in Anthropology.

Emcees will announce parade entries at two separate viewing areas: in front of City Hall (Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue) and in front of the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace). Dietz and Watson returns as a sponsor for the event.

The Pie-asco – which invites all parade-goers to smoosh a friend or loved one with a shaving-cream pie – follows the parade and goes off in front of the Music Pier.

The Basset Hound Olympics will be held on the practice field adjacent to Ocean City High School (just off the Boardwalk at Sixth Street) after the Pie-asco. The hilarious event features the ear-flapping hounds competing in sprints, hurdles, high-jumps and obstacles. As event founder Mark Soifer always put it: “Most then flop down for a nap.”

The first of two Great Egg Hunts on the beach starts promptly at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (April 8). Thousands and thousands of eggs will be placed in areas of the beach between 11th Street and 14th Street. Age categories include: 2-and-under (at 11th Street), 3 years old (at 11th Street), 4 years old (at 12th Street), 5 years old (at 12th Street), 6 and 7 years old (at 13th Street). here was an overwhelming feeling of optimism among Major League Baseball fans across the country this week. Opening day and everyone started off a winner. It’s a new season, a clean slate. There’s always this feeling among fans; “this could be the year”. The talk during Spring Training centers on this years prospects, the potential and the chance to pull it all together.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this optimistic outlook comes the same time as the start of a new calendar season as well. This time of year marks new beginnings in many ways. But here’s the thing, it doesn’t take long until disappointment sets in. One week into the baseball season and of course, some teams win and consequently others lose. So, what do the teams do? They adjust and tweak and revisit their strategy.

I’d like to think that we could all learn a thing or two from that real life analogy.

If you find yourself in that situation the first thing you do is treat this crossroad as your personal clean slate or new season.

Then what? · Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Just like a baseball team you want to look at what you bring to the table. In what areas do you shine? Play to your strengths. · Determine where you want to land.

here’s a scene in David Scott Kessler’s film about the Pine Barrens where Steven Carty, a basket-weaver from Mount Holly, reflects on the nature of Piney identity. Steven’s a Bozarth, which makes him Piney royalty, and he’s Lenape Indian (“the first Pineys”) on his mother’s side, but he has an open mind on the question of what makes a Piney a Piney–if you say you’re a Piney, you are one. But he does have one pet peeve.

“If you ask me, claiming to be a ‘redneck’ does not make one a Piney,” he says. “Some folks forget the Mason-Dixon line ends at Delaware.”

Apt words during these interesting times in the history of our Republic, when identity crises have burst forth into our political culture with such unprecedented force.

Kessler’s film is called The Pine Barrens, a name it shares with John McPhee’s celebrated 1968 book, which is credited with launching the Pine Barrens preservation move-

ment. Like McPhee, Kessler’s task was to create something enchanting and atmospheric and also deeply political. When McPhee was writing in the 1960s, the Pine Barrens faced an existential threat from a proposed “supersonic jetport” that was to be plopped down in their midst and that might have turned Chatsworth into Hartsfield-Jackson. Today the threat is regulatory capture. The Pinelands Commission has been slowly degraded as the governor removes independent commissioners and replaces them with tame ones, without political consequence.

McPhee doesn’t hang his book on the drama of a political movement.

He bets that his portrait of the forest, its people, their history can be carried along on the back of his prose until he springs the monster in Act III. By then you’ve been smitten. “I like that the threat was not established as the subject of the book. Rather, what made the Pine Barrens special was the subject,” Kessler said in a Facebook chat. “That

was the reason it was successful and a good example for activists to follow. I have tried to emulate that with my film.â&#x20AC;?

Kessler has said he intended his film as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;sensory experienceâ&#x20AC;? real and â&#x20AC;&#x153;exaggerated.â&#x20AC;? It ignores the conventions of reality wilderness entertainment.

There are no copulating wildebeest or naturalists picking up venomous spiders to demonstrate respect for nature.

There are painterly compositions of Piney landscapes. You hear what a snowfall in the Pines sounds like, what a forest fire in the Pines sounds like. You hear what a summer afternoon in the Pines smells like (baking pine needles) when Allen Crawford, Kesslerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s field guide, describes one to you.

McPhee had two main Piney confidants. Kesslerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book is more vividly populated. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Paul Evans Pederson, a longtime South Jersey musician, large and bearded, rooting through the earth for the shards of old glass that he uses to make his beautiful jewelry.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bill Bolger, also white-bearded, maybe taller than Paul, drinking whisky and hanging out with his cats. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mary-Ann Thompson, genius cranberry farmer, lawyer and preservation advocate, sorting cranberries at her farm, Birches. Gary Giberson, the Port Republic Mayor, carves a duck decoy, talks about the privateers in his family tree.

big trees are the only solid ground. Like Kessler, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a visual artist, and he describes the changing seasons in the woods with an art historianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye. He floats down streams of cedar water in his kayak, dips his boots in the foam. He does a comedy bit with a Pine Barrens tree frog, recites Ozymandias while thinking about the future Ice Age. To me the most elegiac moments come when we see the Pine Barrensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; current inhabitants talking about the woodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; former inhabitants, their dead relatives, on the sites they shared together, that hold so much history, memory, sadness, now. The old ways have recededâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;the community the Pineys kept around harvest time, drinking, singing outside, around the campfire, in the evenings after the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work. There are 700,000 people living in the Pine Barrens. They are not uninhabited. But the way of life is as much under threat as anything else we see onscreen. Two of Kesslerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s co-conspiratorsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Mary-Ann Thompson and Karen Rileyâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;have died since he began work on the film. But compared with them, the Pinelands Commissioners seem like pale shadows.

They sit beneath grim lighting, looking at their cellphones during meetings. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to imagine them stewarding the land they seem so divorced from.
