he full Ocean City Boardwalk reopened last week, just in time for a beautiful weekend. Walkers, runners and bicyclists had been detoured since the Fall. The portion, between 8th and 10th streets is fourth part of a multi-year project the rebuild the entire structure from 5th Street to 12th Street. Construction continues at the entrances of 8th and 9th street. Five new boardwalk pavilions also will be built.

A Best Friend From the Editor

C

ooper gets me. He knows when I need a hug or when I want to play--even when I need some exercise. Cali is just a baby. She wants to play all the time and flashes the cutest smile you've ever seen.

There are countless reasons that I love my dogs. Companionship and amusement are at the top of that list, as is the fact that dogs ask for so little in return for our affection. All they need is a steady stream of belly rubs and tennis balls. There are no judgments or conditions placed on their love, loyalty, and endless affections. The simplicity of our love for one another creates an extraordinary bond.

The adoration I have for my dogs is not unusual. Most American dog owners consider their dogs to be vital parts of their families. This special love and care take many forms: the way we cuddle up with our furry friends to watch a movie; our dogs' presence in our family holiday portraits; even our dogs' wardrobes, which sometimes rival our own in style and comfort.

Nowadays, the huge contribution dogs make to the well-being of their human coun-

terparts is more visible than ever. Dogs are trained helpers for people with disabilities and they play an increasingly significant role in promoting general mental and physical health. My mother recently spent 15 days in the hospital and the only time she smiled was when the therapy dog came to visit. A large part of my mom's motivation to get well came from her eagerness to get home to her little lap dog, Itty Bit. My daughter informed me that a friend who lives in her dorm will be getting a service dog to help her with anxiety attacks.

Did you know that America is home to more dogs than any other country on Earth? Our canine population is over 75 million. Sadly, 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters each year and 1.2 million are euthanized. The Humane Society of Ocean City, featured in this issue, is a no kill shelter. They are developing important and innovative programs to help dogs stay in their homes. In addition, the Community Food Bank has teamed up with Absecon Vet to assist people that are struggling financially to feed their pets.

Historical scrapbooks can honor older relatives

T

here are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history.

Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations to enjoy.

Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. Perhaps there is a specific event in a grandparent's life that is worth highlighting, like a military tour of duty or a brief stint in show business. Maybe you would like to present different snapshots in time during his or her life. Either way, planning out the content of the scrapbook will make it easier to gather the necessary elements.

Once you've settled on a theme, begin your research by interviewing the eventual recipient (he or she doesn't have to know the reason behind the inquiry).

During the interview, take note of key dates and try to establish the

For example, you may be able to find samples of advertisements from a correlating period in history or newspaper clippings that can be used to fluff up the content of the book.

In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting. Prints

can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images.

Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be careful not to lose or damage the originals.

Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are a variety of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook.

There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online.

Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes.

This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies.

Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images.

This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information at your fingertips. The scrapbook also will serve as a good source material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors.

Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby's first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior.

Hometown Hero: Chris Devaney

C

hris Devaney is the autism whisperer. That is what the parents call him. When parents of special needs children are struggling with behavior challenges, Chris Devaney is well known as the “go to guy.”

Devaney is a long time resident in Ocean City. He worked for the Division of Developmental Disabilities for decades as the Behavior Specialist for Atlantic and Cape May County. Although he had a caseload of over a hundred, he knew and cared deeply about each individual child.

Kristina Smith of Galloway says “he sees each child for who they are – beyond the behavior. The very first day we met with him he was so excited to hear about all of Jeremy’s wonderful gift, not just the things that needed work. He works tirelessly to figure out detailed plans of action and has a bottomless magic toolbox of ideas.”

Devaney is retired now, but still helps families with disabilities. He volunteers his time regularly to assist families that may be struggling and also volunteers with multiple organizations for autism.

Education Teacher in Virginia. Devaney’s son, Chris Jr. runs a local farm, in Tuckahoe that creates jobs for and employs those with special needs.

Susan O’Neill describes the difference Devaney has made in her own family. “We met Chris 17 years ago.

He saw the gifts and talents in both my sons, not just my son with autism.

He paired my sons with other children in the community and allowed them to support each other. It is because of Chris that both my sons know the joy and beauty of helping others and gained that experience early. When i first met Chris I was a scared Mom of a 3 year old with many negative behaviors that prevented us from fitting in and few understood. Chris came to my house for free. He gave the best advice of all. He said keep bringing him in the community. He gave me the courage and purpose to do so.”

Devaney has spent countless hours giving to others. Many other parents recount similar stories of how Devaney cared deeply, volunteered his time and changed their lives. Devaney is an encourager. He sees the best in everyone and finds something positive to focus on. In a world full of critics, we are all very thankful for the encouragers.

Pickleball Anyone? their badminton court. The family dog, Pickle, loved to retrieve the ball and the sport’s name was born. In the coming days both kids and adults alike fell in love with it, and as they played the rules evolved (to include the non-volley zone, for instance) to form the game as it’s now played.

Pickleball is best described as small version of tennis with a few key differences. It is played with a

perforated plastic ball (similar to a whiffle ball) and solid paddles, like those used in ping pong. It is easy for beginners to learn, and can attract any age level of player. But, it can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Anyone that has played other racquet sports such as ping pong, tennis or racquetball, will adapt quickly to this game.

According to the USA Pickleball Association, there are now nearly 4,000 places around the country where the game is played, more than doubling the total from 2010.

That explosion is credited to the widespread adoption of pickleball in community centers, Physical Education classes and retirement communities. Here are the public courts in the area:

Stockton and Bader Field Possible Deal Would Include Baseball Stadium and Skating Rink

tockton University is in “preliminary talks” to develop some or all of Atlantic City’s Bader Field, according to people with knowledge of the matter. If the university were to occupy the site, it would further extend Galloway-based Stockton’s reach in Atlantic City, where it is building a residential campus, parking garage and academic center scheduled to open in 2018.

The university is considering using the Bader Field site for a marine sciences and resiliency center, one of the people said.

University President Harvey Kesselman discussed the idea as part of wider plans for the university in a presentation to Stockton foundation board members last week.

Kesselman has had talks with Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian about buying some of the site, one other person said. The mayor’s office did not immediately comment. University spokeswoman Maryjane Briant wrote in an email, “Stockton University President Harvey Kesselman stated that there are no plans to buy Bader Field.”

Separately, Stockton Island Campus Chief Executive Brian Jackson said at a

meeting last week that the University was talking with a developer about the Sandcastle Stadium site. Briant, in another email, said, “Jackson confirms that his recent remarks referenced only the possibility of someday holding some university athletic events at Bader Field, should an outside group reopen the stadium there.”

Stockton may also be interested in the ice skating rink on the Bader Field site, two people said. Both the 6,000-seat minor league stadium and the Flyers

Skate Zone are currently leased out by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA).

Bader Field was named a Redevelopment Zone by Atlantic City Council in 2008. It was also named as collateral under the terms of an emergency loan the state made to the city last year. The site, once an airport, has been on the radar of developers for years although the city’s attempts to auction it off last year attracted bids of just $50 million. The

city briefly agreed to sell the site to the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority for $110 million last October, but that plan fell through when the state took control of Atlantic City in November.

Stockton University borrowed $70 million to pay for its Island Campus at the boardwalk-end of Albany Avenue. The University borrowed a further $211 million, also last year, to pay down existing debt and to fund $25 million in projects at its main Galloway Township campus.

The ratings agency Moody’s at the time warned the University that its borrowing left it in a “weakened financial position.”

It is not clear how the University would finance further acquisitions.

Sunshine Guaranteed in Ocean City for Memorial Day Weekend

C and the Sunshine Band will make their Ocean City debut with a concert to help kick off the summer season on Memorial Day Weekend.

The band will perform on the Ocean City Music Pier on Sunday, May 28.

Generations of fans have danced to hit singles including “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Get Down Tonight,” “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” and “Boogie Shoes.” The band fuses Caribbean, R&B and funk music with the singular purpose of “creating instant happiness through music.” The show promises to get people up and out of their seats in a spectacular start to summer in Ocean City.

Home improvements that increase home value

W

hen granite countertops or shiny, stainless steel appliances beckon homeowners from the display areas of home improvement stores, it's tempting to gear remodeling thoughts toward the items that will add flair and decorative appeal to a home. Even though most improvements add some measure of value, deciding which are the best investments can be difficult.

Return on investment, often referred to as ROI, varies depending on the project. Frequently, the projects that seem like the best investments don't bring the greatest rate of return, while those that seem like smaller projects bring substantial returns. Real estate professionals routinely weigh in with their expert advice, and homeowners can couple that advice with Remodeling magazine's annual 'Cost vs. Value Index' to reap the greatest financial impact from their renovations.

The following were some of the projects that garnered the greatest ROI in 2015.

Open the door to improvement.

Region by region across the United States, installation of a new steel door on the front of a home can have a large impact on the resale value of a property. The ROI ranges

Before remodeling, determine which projects will provide the greatest return on investment. from 123 percent at the highest, to 86 percent at the lowest which is still a considerable investment return for such a simple project.

Match the door's style with the style of the house for the best value.

Turn up the kitchen heat. An attractive kitchen can encourage

buyers to overlook some of a home's less attractive components.

In the kitchen, replacement countertops, wall color changes, new cabinetry and flooring offer the biggest ROI. Dreaming of a new bedroom.

Remodeling magazine also points

to creating an attic bedroom to increase home value. The ROI of an attic remodel that adheres to code can garner an 83 percent ROI. Home maintenance projects.

There's little good to improving the aesthetic appeal and functionality of a home if there are existing structural or maintenance issues, warn experts. Siding replacement, HVAC system repair or replacement, a new roof, and basement dampness prevention solutions can be smarter investments before other flashy remodels. Many buyers have a strict budget for a house, and those buyers may be more likely to buy a house with little or no maintenance issues. Such buyers will then upgrade the kitchen or baths themselves, according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.

Worthy window replacement.

Angie's List, a home services review and referral resource, has found that the average ROI of new windows is 77 percent. The cost of installation and energy savings tend to offset at around the 10-year point.

If remodeling is on the horizon, homeowners should give strong consideration to ROI before choosing a project.

T

he song tells us Silence Is Golden. But is it? If you’re trying to take a nap, perhaps. But otherwise, you may want to re-think that advice.

We’ve all been told at one time or another, “Be quiet! I’m trying to think.” Or, “you’re making way too much noise. How am I supposed to concentrate?”

Well, it could be that may not be the best admonishment if your goal is to get your creative juices flowing.

A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research finds that when you compare next to no noise or silence to moderate levels of ambient noise, turns out moderate noise wins out as a better environment in which to create.

In the Journal study, participants were separated into four groups and asked to complete a Remote Associates Test; a commonly used test of creative thinking that asks test-takers to find the relationship between a series of words that appear unrelated.

As part of the experiment, each of the groups was subjected to a different level of background noise as well as total silence.

Apparently it turns out moder-

ate background noise (70 decibels) creates enough of a distraction to push people to think more creatively whereas complete silence can have the opposite effect.

So, what’s the best environment for achieving the most concentration for a creative person? Researchers suggest a relatively noisy environment like a cafe or coffee shop may actually trigger the brain to think abstractly and in turn generate creative ideas. I’m sure the caffeine can help things along as well.

Too little noise or silence and your mind may wander. Researchers also caution that excessive noise like a jackhammer isn’t the answer either.

Too much noise really does make it hard to think. Guess its true that in everything we should practice moderation, literally. Like most anything else, the findings won’t apply across the board to everyone. The key is to experiment and see what works best for you.

y twins both weighed 3 pounds when they were born and had a lot of feeding issues as infants. When we started them on solid foods, my daughter really struggled. As a parent it was very difficult to go through this. We couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand why she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to eat.

Our pediatrician at the time suggested that we try a feeding therapy program with her that we quickly discovered was not what she needed. So we backed off and eventually she came around to eating.

How did it happen? One of the things I attribute it to is cooking with my kids. At six they are very comfortable in the kitchen. I strongly believe that they are better eaters because of how much cooking we do together.

Cooking with kids requires a lot of patience. It can get very messy but is worth it. We want our children to be healthy eaters and cooking with them is a great first step towards this. Here are some ways that my kids, who are now six, help in the kitchen. â&#x2014;? Combining

In a large bowl combine flour, brown sugar, salt and baking powder.

In a medium bowl whisk together sour cream, vanilla, oil and egg.

Add egg mixture to dry ingredients.

Fold gently until combined. Mixture will be thick.

Gently fold in blueberries.

Spoon batter into each baking cup, filling each about 3/4 full. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top.

Bake for 15 minutes or until muffins are set. Insert toothpick to check for doneness.

A

tlantic City’s 9 th annual Restaurant Week, taking place from Sunday March 5th through Friday, March 10th, offers multi course lunches for $15.17 and dinners for $35.17 at over seventy local businesses. More than forty will also serve lunch.

We do offer one simple word of advice: always confirm that RW menus will be available prior to heading out for a meal.

Two different approaches seem to exist regarding Restaurant Week.

Some kitchens- too many if you ask us- choose to simply ‘mail it in’, offering items from their regular bill of fare at discounted prices.

This isn’t always a terrible thing, especially at the higher end of the culinary spectrum, but we always search out places whose chefs opt to use Restaurant week offerings to try out new dishes, many seasonally-inspired.

So, without further introduction, here is a short list of our best suggestions.

Lunch Favorites Atlantic City Country Club, Northfi eld- One of the grandest daytime dining environs, featuring pristine, golden marshlands slouching endlessly towards Absecon Island.

Lunch apps include a trio of Asian-inspired delights; a Thai-style tuna poke stack, macadamia crispy shrimp or Korean-style wings.

Larger lunch plates bring a fabulous-sounding pan-fried pierogi platter with duck confit, grilled miso salmon accompanied by lump crab and quinoa and a serious sandwich of grilled country ham, rotisserie turkey breast and brie on multigrain bread with a cranberry/apple compote and sweet potato fries.

No matter what you order, do not miss the incredible Pennsylvania

Dutch style butterscotch pie with hot chocolate sauce.

Bocca, Margate. This underrated, casual Italian facility does much more than standard red sauce cuisine well.

What caught our eye this RW? Two lunch specialties; a delightful sandwich, their sweet and savory sub, combining mozzarella, arugula, fig jam, prosciutto and Extra Virgin Olive Oil on a seeded semolina roll and a Tuscan chicken rice bowl, sautéed kale, red quinoa, brown rice, topped with grilled chicken, oven roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic, cannellini beans, basil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Fred and Ethel’s, Smithville. Start with wings and tots; chipotle jam sauced wings over crispy tots with bacon, bleu crumbles and scallions or spinach/artichoke wontons sided by spicy tomato sauce.

Then choose from among a blackened mahi salad artfully composed of spinach, feta, watermelon, red grapes, Granny smith apples and candied pecans with citrus vinaigrette, the short rib grilled cheese –a gouda /gorgonzola combo- with honey Porter glazed onions on sourdough or house signature F&E Burger, certified Angus beef topped with mozz, pancetta, roasted tomato and arugula on a brioche.

Perhaps taking a cue from A.C’s legendary Knife and Fork, which only serves lunch once weekly- on Friday- Ramsey’s Caesar’s-based outpost will open only on Sunday for midday repast. Sample from apps of molasses/brown ale glazed wings with green apple, jalapeno and crumbled Stilton, Ramsey’s famed 48-hour slow cooked pork belly, accented by a cardamom carrot puree and cider-honey glaze or a chopped salad of shrimp, chicken, salami, apples, chick peas, cherry tomatoes, Welsh cheddar, avocado spread and

raspberry vinaigrette. Big plates bring a pistachio pesto chicken sandwich topped by Cheshire cheese and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cress on a ciabatta, grilled lamb burger with caramelized onion, tomato confit, more â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cress and goat cheese on rosemary brioche or traditional ale-battered fish and chips. Dessert is a no-brainer, British sticky toffee pudding with double vanilla ice cream.

Dinner Favorites Back Bay Ale House. Another scenic spot, situated on the northeast tip of Atlantic Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic Gardnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basin, should make for lovely sunset dining now in the dying days of winter.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d suggest starting with classic, red-based conch and clam chowder or their unique, dry-rubbed, grilled wings, finished with house â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ju-Juâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; slather.

Fred and Ethel's Lantern Light Tavern Then select from among a jerk combo; five of those wings, a pair of pork shanks and a skewer of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ju-Juâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; shrimp, or Maryland style crab cakes, a shrimp, crab and broccoli alfredo over cheese tortellini or the carnivoreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delight of a fourteen ounce ribeye.

Buddokan, Atlantic City. One of the very best things about RW is that it offers a reasonably-priced opportunity to visit places like Steven Starrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spectacular, ocean fronting Asian eatery at a fraction of normal costs.

Offered as evidence, Buddokanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quartet of dinner entrees; wasabi-crusted filet with sweet potato mash, pan seared sea bass accompanied by haricot verts, butternut squash and maitake mushrooms, sizzling short rib with mushroom chow fun and Asian pear and a spectacular Five Spice duck with roasted garlic and corn/scallion spoon bread.

Girasole, Atlantic City. Another special-occasion sort of enterprise, Girasole presents authentic central, coastal and northern Italian upscale dining, rather unusual locally.

With one of the broadest RW menus, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re certain to find something to your liking.

of Escarole, with baby meatball, fennel, sundried tomatoes and ricotta, gamberi e fagioli, oven-baked shrimp and cannellini beans in EVOO and garlic over toasted bread or carpaccio Girasole, a pretty plating of warm thinly sliced filet presented alongside asparagus, artichokes, shaved Parmigiano and truffle oil.

Entrees offer spaghetti frutti di mare composed of shrimp, calamari and clams over thin pasta, tagliata di manzo, sliced black angus sirloin, arugula and shaved Parm dotted with aged balsamic or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tonnoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; yellowfin tuna in Italian fashion, grilled and accompanied by heirloom cherry tomatoes, gaeta black olives, capers and thyme.

Valentinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Northfield. It only makes sense that we mention this hidden mainland gem directly after Girasole, since they are connected by both family and ownership.

Cozy and warm, Valentinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is-as the name might suggest- an ideal romantic option for A.Câ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s RW. Start with the barbabietole e caprino; a stylish take on the now-standard salad of roasted red and yellow beets, studded with goat cheese and tossed with arugula or calamari au gratin, lightly grilled squid, very different than the deep-fried product so ubiquitous around here.

Main courses, however, are where this storefront BYOB really sparkles.

Items like risotto gamberi e limone, Italian Carnaroli rice- considered the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;caviarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of risotto in Italy- with shrimp and lemon zest, costoletta de maiale, a sixteen ounce pork chop in an onion/rosemary reduction or an intriguing, Sicilian version of scallops, pan-seared alongside spinach, orange and pine nuts.

The Smithville Inn, Galloway Twp. Another inspired menu includes starters like a crab and corn tostada, Brussels sprout salad with shaved almonds, house-cured bacon and apple cider vinaigrette, tuna poke with citrus ponzu, BBQ pork belly flat bread and Monte Carlo salad; field greens, speck, roasted tomatoes, crispy onion straws and a roasted garlic basil dressing.

Entrees demonstrate the kitchenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talent for composed platings; pork tenderloin, oven roasted cauliflower, mashed Yukons and gorgonzola demi, stuffed salmon with crab imperial, jasmine rice and lemon dill cream, flat iron steak with caramelized onion, smoked jalapeno butter, crispy leeks and Yukons or a shrimp and andouille risotto combining house made Cajun sausage and gulf shrimp, roasted tomato risotto and basil oil.

I want to invite you learn about the amazing benefits of beans, also known as legumes or pulses. Beans are an important staple on 3 continents. The United Nations declared 2016, “the International Year of the Pulses.” This campaign aimed to bring more awareness not only to the beans high nutritional content and benefits as a high-fiber low fat protein source, but also to raise awareness that beans are more of a sustainable food source than animal foods and are kinder to the planet. An excess of animal foods can negatively affect the body with a high content of saturated fat and cholesterol.

Research has shown that beans/legumes lower cholesterol, including LDL, reduce blood pressure and help control blood sugar. Beans contain a good source of folate, which is good for the heart. They also contain iron, calcium, zinc, potassium and fiber. Beans are a good source of protein. 1/4 cup of beans is equal to 1 ounce of beef, chicken, or fish. The USDA recommends that you consume 3 cups of beans a week. I think that we should eat at least 4 cups of beans a week. Here are some ways to enjoy legumes; Sprinkle beans on salad, use hummus, eat roasted chickpeas, chili, soup and add them to just about anything -even brownies!

1 tsp oregano 1 tsp parsley ½ tsp paprika 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin 5 cups water or vegetable broth 2 tsp. olive oil or coconut oil salt and pepper to taste 1 lemon 1. Wash lentils until water is clear.

2. Saute oil with diced onion over medium heat.

3. When onions are translucent add garlic sauté for a minute being careful not to burn.

4. Add water or broth, carrots, and lentils.

5. After lentils come to a boil add tomatoes, oregano, parsley, paprika, turmeric, cumin 6. Cook until lentils are tender, 15-20 minutes.

7. Add spinach and cook until tender.

8. Season with salt and pepper.

Squeeze juice of fresh lemon just before serving 9. Breathe deep, relax and give thanks for this nourishing food.

Formerly called Just like New Consignment, in business for 30 years, now has a name and location- a larger and better location at 430 Tilton Rd, directly across from Northfield Shopping Center.

Next Generation Exchange has been a vision that Sonya and Frank Pacera have been working on for almost a year. They felt that there was a need for a store like this in Atlantic county. It was created to be a place for the local community to come together, make money by selling their unused items and be inspired by some fun in-store events. They give back

to the community by donating unsold items to local charities and families in need. Says Sonya “We listen to our customers and take their recommendations on items they would like to see in the store. We then go out and find those requested items and add them to our store’s inventory,” The resale items are usually50 to 75% off the current retail price. Weekly specials are discounted even more. Frequent Shopper discount programs are offered as well.

Next Generation was designed to be a fun and relaxing place to shop. The new store is organized with each area well displayed and easily accessible for shoppers. Love the Arts in Somers Point will introduce the Somers Point community to the 2017 Arts Commission programs, projects and events that will take place in the schools, the Senior Center, Kennedy Park, Greate Bay Country Club and in other places throughout the city during the year.

A highlight of Love the Arts in Somers Point event will be the photographic exhibit of The Arts Reach Out 2016 and the recognition of the children and seniors who experienced art activities in the Somers Point Schools After-School (CASTLE) program and in the Somers Point Senior Center.

In addition to the photographic exhibit, the Commission will recognize contributors to the 2016 the program and the 2017 contributors

to date as well as members of non-profit arts organizations and art business owners.

Our Founding Father

eorge Washington’s birthday, February 22, was a big deal when I grew up in Atlantic City in the 1950’s. School was closed that day. Leading up, we had special assemblies about George Washington where we sang “Yankee Doodle” and other patriotic songs.

The hallways were filled with various tributes to George Washington we made with crayons, watercolors, and construction paper. Almost every store and car dealership had some special George Washington sale.

In 1971, Republican President Nixon joined with Democrats to replace “Washington’s Birthday” with “President’s Day” so government employees could enjoy on a three-day weekend. Five years later, Republican President Gerald Ford and Democrats expanded “Negro History Week” which became “Black History Month”.

That crowded George Washington out of most elementary schools and national awareness.

The first Presidential Inauguration

American History at our community college. George Washington was far more than a great American. His whole life was an example of how every American should live. His achievements were so extraordinary, that there would not have been an America as we know it without him. Yet most Americans today know almost nothing about him.

George Washington grew up with hardship. His father died when young George was just 11 years old.

Most of his property went to the children of his first wife. Washington quit school to work the family’s farm while is mother cared for his younger sister and three younger brothers.

At age 15, Washington made himself apprentice to a land surveyor.

To learn this profession, Washington worked for years without pay on long and dangerous trips hundreds of miles into the wilderness.

During this time, Washington constantly read books to give himself the equivalent of a college education. When he returned home, he dressed well and carefully rehearsed dancing, table manners, and dinner conversation so he could mix with the rich and powerful. Because of his social skills, Washington was put in command of his local part-time, volunteer militia unit without any military training. Once again, Washington read books, learned from others, and taught himself.

At age 21, Washington’s militia unit was sent to chase French soldiers away from what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This started an eightyear war with France. Although Washington proved himself to be a smart, brave and capable commander, he was denied promotion in the British army because he was an American, a “mere colonial”. He lacked the family and political connections in England.

Washington turned to business instead. He married Martha Custis, a wealthy widow. During the next 10 years, the two of them expanded their farms and started many successful businesses that included fishing fleets, flour mills, cloth and whisky production. During this time, Washington also began to resent British taxes and laws that gave unfair advantages to political insiders in England. When Americans in Boston rebelled against those same laws and taxes, Washington supported them.

In 1775, the Continental Congress put Washington in command of its new Continental Army.

When the British offered freedom to American slaves who joined them, some of Washington’s slaves took that offer. This profoundly affected Washington. After the war, Washington supported laws and provisions in the Constitution to limit and gradually end slavery. He freed his own slaves when he died.

As commander of America’s first army, Washington developed a

uniquely American management style.

Unlike the British, Washington appointed and dismissed his commanders only on talent and performance.

When Washington introduced a new plan or idea, he usually pretended it was the suggestion of someone else so his junior officers would give their honest opinions. When plans failed, Washington took full responsibility.

When the cause seemed hopeless, Washington persisted through all eight years of the war.

There were times during the was when Washington’s solders wanted to march on Congress and take over the government. Washington repeatedly stopped them. When his soldiers asked Washington to run the country as a king or dictator, he refused.

After the war, the thirteen newly independent states almost ruined the economy by taxing goods brought in from other American states. George Washington suggested changes to the Articles of Confederation to stop this. Washington then presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1776.

Washington was first elected President in 1788. He was elected for another four-year terms in 1992. He was urged to run for a third term in 1796, but Washington stepped down after two terms.

Meet Dusty

D

usty is a 10-month old male â&#x20AC;&#x153;Omani Wadi dogâ&#x20AC;?. He traveled all the way from the Arabian Peninsula. These Wadi dogs can be seen virtually everywhere in Oman. Unfortunately, they face the same plight as many Muslim countries where dogs are generally viewed as unclean and not fit to be pets.

Dog ownership is rare and when they are owned they are usually not allowed in the house. The government doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have humane animal welfare laws and police are given open rights to shoot any of the Wadi dogs. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be a nuisance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they will be killed just for having the unfortunate luck of being born on the streets in Oman.

Found by canine rescuers who work in Oman, Dusty wandered out of the desert when he was about 6-8 weeks old. Apparently separated from his doggie-family, Dusty spent the next 8 months being fostered by the rescue worker who found him. Dustyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey led him to the HSOC on December 24th, 2016â&#x20AC;Śnot quite on Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleigh, but a Christmas gift just the same! He spent the next couple weeks adjusting to life here. Dusty is an intelligent and wonderfully happy pooch, possessing a silly playfulness about him. He tends to be a bit shy and timid at first, but responds well to affection and food! He is still a bit

sensitive to new things (people, sounds, bicycles, trash truck, etc.) and will need proper socialization training. Outgoing and well-mannered, Dusty is attentive and gentle, has good energy though is not rambunctious. He is an undemanding pooch, rather submissive about most things. Dusty is house-broken, and knows a few basic obedience cues fairly well. Dusty does have guarding issues, about food and high-value goodies, so he is not suitable to live with children. He may okay with other pets, though other dogs will require a meet and greet (by appt. only). Experienced dog owners are a must for Dusty, but if you think you may be the right forever home for him, come and meet him today!

53 years ago, in 1964, two teens in Ocean City began taking in stray animals and sheltering them in their garage. That grew and grew and today is the Humane Society of Ocean City, a “No Kill” Animal Shelter that provides three levels of service: Adoption, Veterinary Care and Animal Control.

Some exciting new improvements are underway right now at the Humane Society of Ocean City. The veterinary clinic is being expanded to provide more exam rooms to serve more animals and another vermterinarian is being added to staff the clinic. “Since Hurricane Sandy, the need for affordable veterinary care is great and we are responding to the need,” said Bill Hollingsworth, Executive Director.

Using Technology for Sales Presentations:

ales presentations are becoming more digital. They come in different formats such as a program like Microsoft Power Point or an app such as Salesforce. Creating a truly effective presentation requires the following: SALES PRESENTATION PLANNING Advance planning can make all the difference for a business presentation.

To start with, you need to know who your audience will be so that you can tailor your presentation to their wants and interests. A technical presentation is quite different from an informational sales presentation to the customer.

Once you know the audience, you can decide what format you will use, maybe a table top flip chart on printed pages of your Power Point presentation or a live power point presentation from your laptop. Your main objective in plan-

ning the presentation in the beginning is the format you will use, while at the same time establishing the overall message that you want the presentation to get across.

Next, try to get an idea of what the customer is expecting. Are you going to give a formal sales pitch or hold a more open discussion? How long will the meeting be? Answer several questions yourself for example; will your presentation offer something that your competitors don’t? or are you creating an educational moment, where you are informing and educating your audience?

SETTING THE STRUCTURE Structuring your sales presentation enables you to develop a presentation where you can have your audience interact with the presentation. Consider slides that ask a question of your audience, requiring you to call on them for the answer. Perhaps a quiz to keep them alert. You could provide giveaways if they answer the question correctly.

The best giveaways are promotional items for your company such as keychains, flash drives, etc. Something of value to the audience that will be used by them, which in turn promotes your business.

Once you have the structure organized, it’s worth drawing up notes you can speak from — not a full script — and practicing it. Try to build some flexibility

into your presentation in case a particular point doesn’t work well, or you run short on time. Do this under the Note section of Power Point but be sure that your audience can not see your notes section.

DELIVERING IT Even for the most experienced, it is normal to be nervous when you are about to deliver the presentation. Try to take that energy and use it to empower your presentation. Take deep breaths before you start and make a strong conscious effort to speak slowly which can help overcome the appearance of nerves. Be sure your body language and voice engages the audience rather than speaking at them. Regularly look for eye contact with your audience. If appropriate, ask them questions try to avoid distractions that may come from the audience, like people getting up, talking or interrupting you. If someone does decide to ask a question during the

presentation, decide how best to deal with them. You may need to answer a question right away to overcome a potential problem, but detailed points should be left until after your planned question and answer period. In either case, you should try to stay in control of the discussion. Once you have finished your presentation, you should encourage feedback and any further questions.

Power Point presentation and Equipment verification Make sure everything works the way it should. If you have included video in your presentation, links to a website or YouTube work, test it first.

My recommendation is to bring your own equipment, that way there are no surprises. Portable projectors are very affordable and can make the difference if the equipment at the location fails. Ensure that your presentation is timed correctly and all of the advance features work. Have a backup plan in case something does go wrong. A bad or malfunctioning presentation gives the impression for what your selling or presenting, regardless of how good your product or service is!

The “This Is AC” Movement

s a lifelong Atlantic City resident, a business owner in the city, and a mother of two children in the public school system, I grew frustrated with the negative attention my hometown was receiving and knew that it had to change.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect last year when I was introduced to a team of believers shining through the cracks: This Is AC. I have never met a more humble, tenacious, and determined trio and had to learn more.

What started out as a grassroots social media movement inspired by the collective minds of Dawn Belamarich Berry, Evan Sanchez, and Donna Danielson, has grown into something much bigger. The group of local volun-

teers are genuine ambassadors of Atlantic City acting as a catalyst for the cultural renaissance of the city, and I am proud to call them my “tribe”.

The nonprofit organization operates with the mission statement to inspire community movement, flip the script on negative press, and support all things positive in Atlantic City. Over the past year, the team expanded enough to facilitate growth both online and in the community, with support from AtlanticCare and other powerful organizations in our region. The daily social media interaction with their branded hashtag, #ThisIsAC, has produced nearly 12,000 user-submitted and original photos on Instagram, including participation from the casinos, city visitors, and even the Miss America contestants! ThisIsAC.comalso features a community calendar, open for anyone to submit their Atlantic City happenings.You can usually find a team member out and about whether it’s touringthe new local distillery, fostering a community garden, biking the boardwalk, or chalking up the sidewalks with art.

In January 2017, ThisIsAC launched “Faces of AC” on its

website to start a new conversation – one focused on the people of Atlantic City working hard every day to make the City a better place. “We believe by spreading inspiring stories we can help to change the perception of Atlantic City from the ground up and get more people interested in being a part of positive change,” said Dawn Belamarich Berry, Co-Founder of ThisIsAC. This month, ThisIsAC introduced “Experiences” - a new section of their website to show

that Atlantic City is not just a “one-and-done” town. The Experiences will feature fresh and innovative ideas to experience Atlantic City in a way you might not have before - from learning where the locals drink, to planning the perfect family-friendly weekend.

“Oftentimes people come into Atlantic City for work or a specific event and leave right after. Experiences shows people how to stack similar activities together for an awesome day or night,” said Donna Danielson, Co-Founder of ThisIsAC. ThisIsAC is currently accepting applications for an Intern to join their team and learn about community events, volunteer/nonprofit movements, and organic grassroots social media marketing. n the past, I’ve looked forward to watching the Oscars with all the glitz and glamour that is typically Hollywood. With pen and paper in hand, I would make a list of the notable films I missed so I can rent them to be enjoyed later in the comfort of my own home. It all begins with coverage on the red carpet of actresses vying for the title of “Least Dressed” or others wondering “Can they tell this was made from last years’ drapes?” I suffered through the rather obscure awards such as Foreign Language Films, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling and one of my personal favorites, Sound Mixing. I don’t think life would be worth living anymore without finding out who won the Oscar for Sound Mixing. I have endured rather tepid monologues and over the top musical performances that to me only served to lengthen the show sufficiently enough to insert more commercials.

All this ultimately to find out who the best actors/actresses were and which film won Best Picture which may, in the future, be changed to “Most Politically Correct” picture.

A couple weeks ago, while channel surfing through a plethora of mind numbing programs, I landed upon the BAFTA’s which as everyone knows is the British Academy Film Awards.

These are awards for the best feature length films and documentaries shown in British theaters during the previous year. This show captured my attention for many reasons not the least of which is how tastefully it was done. It was hosted by English actor and comedian, Stephen Fry who never appeared to be straining for laughs.

The opening act was performed by the very entertaining Cirque du Soleil.

The only other entertainment break was by a solo cellist who performed a very moving rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah to accompany a slide show of members of the film industry who have recently passed away. One award was even presented by the future king of England, Prince William who Fry introduced as Prince Bill. One wonders who William’s American counterpart is and how such a presentation would be received at the Oscars. All in all, the show was done in a typically reserved British manner. Some references were made by award winners to the current political climate with pleas for unity and peace which can be expected but nothing like Meryl Streep and the use of her allocated time at the recent Golden Globe Awards to impose her political opinion on everyone watching. It is the audacity of actors like Streep who think their message carries more weight simply because of their celebrity status that irks me the most, a status by the way, which is achieved by pretending to be someone else for a couple of hours simply for entertainment value.

Given the choice, I would prefer to listen and hear from someone with a deeper connection to the issues. My choice then, is to avoid viewing the Oscars, Google the results and wait for the next BAFTA program.

TALENT A Poetic Perspective

aria Provenzano is Somers Point’s Poet laureate – their very own representative poet. “Usually countries and larger cities appoint poet laureates,” said Maria. “It’s rare for a small municipality like Somers Point to have one, which is part of what makes this position so cool.”

Maria has been writing poetry since she was around 13. “I just knew that I liked it a whole lot and it helped me make sense of what I was feeling,” she explained.

Maria studied creative writing (with a focus in poetry) and world religions (with a focus in Eastern traditions) at Northwestern University.

“My favorite thing about poetry is the way in which it elevates individual moments,” said Maria. “A poem can focus on something as ordinary as a piece of lint on the carpet and make it special and worthy of attention.” Maria believes that poems allow us to experience the perspective of others, and that’s a truly valuable gift.

“Perspective helps us develop our empathy, and it helps us to see the world in a different way. We could all use more of that,” she said.

Maria writes in free verse and likes to play with different poetic techniques. “I’m mostly inspired by nature and animals. Insects.

Fungus. All of the cool things that grow and change on the planet, especially the small, unnoticed things that thrive in the dirt,” she said. “I’m also inspired by human emotions and responses to problematic situations.”

The Somers Point Arts Commission (an official commission of the city of Somers Point) appointed Maria as poet laureate after she submitted an application which included a biography, information about her experience with poetry, and a sample of her writing.

Her duties as poet laureate include representing Somers Point at certain city

functions. “I read each year at the Memorial Day and September 11 services, and I read at city council meetings at various points throughout the year,” she said. “I’m also required to write a new poem every 3 months.”

In addition to her official duties, being poet laureate has enabled Maria to interact with the community in some fun ways. “I hold poetry workshops with the 7th graders at Jordan Road school each spring, I’ve facilitated a workshop at the Somers Point library, and I’m currently teaching my first 8-week course for adults, she said.

Maria’s poetry has been featured in local publications, and she’s currently working on a book of poems.

“Ultimately, I would love to teach creative writing at a college or university,” she said. Maria was Somers Point’s first poet laureate.

Each term is 2 years, and she was just approved for her second at the beginning of 2017. “I expect additional opportunities in my second term. My first term was a lot about laying a foundation and establishing relationships with local leaders and influencers. Now that we have some great relationships and projects in place, I think it will be easier to expand into new spaces,” she said.

Maria will be reading at Love the Arts in Somers Point on Sunday, February 26.

“Hearing a poem allows you to fully appreciate the sounds and the texture of the language,” she said. “I always recommend reading a poem silently and then reading it out loud.”

As well as being a poet Maria has her own content marketing business The Elegant Root, works at the Noyes Arts Garage in Atlantic City and teaches at Grace & Glory Yoga in Northfield.
