W

e were all rooting for local chef Michael Brennan when he competed on the Food Network’s “Cooks vs. Cons”, but no one was prouder than his father, Thomas Brennan, when he was announced the winner. “I wanted to win the show for my dad to show him how much he has inspired me over the years,” said Michael.

Michael applied online for the show back in September and got a call the next day to do a Skype interview. Soon after he met face to face with the producers then got a call back for the actual filming of the show. “I wanted to really put forth the concept that New Jersey has a fine dining scene and we are more than pasta and red sauce,” he said.

Initially Michael was nervous in front of the cameras. “My first round didn't go quite as planned,” he explained. But once he got over the initial shock his experience kicked in. “It’s just cooking,” he said.

Michael and Thomas Brennan at the Cardinal Bistro in Ventnor City Michael started cooking professionally at the age of 19 and is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in New York. He became interested in cooking as a child while visiting his dad at work.

“My dad was the director of food and beverage at the Trump Marina, he oversaw all the food and beverage outlets in the casino as well as the restaurants. He would bring me back into the kitchens and let me talk to his chefs and experience the glistening stainless steel and the atmosphere that I fell in love with.”

Michael and his dad opened the Cardinal Bistro in July 2016, a contemporary American restaurant which uses ingredients local and indigenous to NJ. “It reflects NJ and what it has to offer from the sea to the farms, we have some of the best products available to us. We want to showcase that and educate people on different, exciting ingredients,” said Michael.

On busy nights Michael’s sister and cousins pitch in at the restaurant. “We have seen a lot more interest and a lot more volume since the show aired,” he said. “But we want to remain humble and focused on the execution as well as the quality of the dining experience.”

Michael always knew he wanted to open a restaurant. “I couldn't imagine a better person to do it with than my father,” he said. “My father does everything at the restaurant from cooking to cleaning, to bookkeeping, anything.”

After the show aired Thomas told Michael how proud he was of everything that they have accomplished so far. “He

has always been supportive of me but I think this was reaching a new point and he knew I could do great things but this was a complete shock to everyone.

I thought I had lost and when they announced my name as the winner it took everything in me to hold back the tears.

“Writing Poetry Your Way: Foundations of Poetry for All Levels” Mondays, February 6 through April 3 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. (no class on February 20)

▶ “Writing Poetry Your Way: Foundations of Poetry for All Levels” is a new series of eight free sessions taking place at Somers Point’s Jordan Road School Library from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Mondays, February 6, 13, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, and April 3.

Creative writer and Somers Point’s Poet Laureate Maria Provenzano will take poets and would-be poets through discussions, readings, poetry writing, all with an emphasis on fun.

This program is open to ages 16 and up and is geared for beginners as well as for practicing writers. If you have never written poetry and would like to write poetry your way; if you want to expand on your writing; or if you want to learn more about expression through the art form of poetry, this is the program for you.

There is no charge for the program, but registration is required.

D

o we really need to feel the cold to appreciate the warmth? Do we need to see the barren trees to appreciate the lush greens of summer? The answer might be no, but you have to admit, it helps.

Winter forces us to slow down. The excitement of the holidays has passed. Many businesses, especially those on the islands, slow to a crawl. The qualities for which the South Jersey Shore is renowned-the sun & sea, the boardwalk, fishing, kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding – are virtually dormant.

In spite of this, there is a beauty in winter, especially after a fresh snow covers the ground and clings to the pine needles. Snow on the beach always feels a bit magical, too. I'm a summer girl at heart, but I have been working on embracing the here and now, that which is right in front of me, as opposed to some other preferred time or season. If we look closely, there is always something to celebrate, always a reason to offer thanks. For me, it is the coziness of a cup of hot tea, or settling down with a favorite book in front of the fire.

And after a cold winter, when the leaves bud and those first flowers push through the ground, it will seem all that much sweeter.

Hometown Hero: Bill Southrey

"L

ove thy neighbor as thy self," are the guiding words of Bill Southrey's life. Southrey grew up clamming in Absecon. His faith and conviction to help others led him to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Southrey held various positions there and was the director for may years. He was there for 30 years total before leaving in 2012.

Southerly teamed up with Paul Hulse in 2014 to form Haven/Beat the Streets Ministries Inc. The 501c3 nonprofit organization helps those in need, especially the homeless.

Haven/Beat the Streets is not a 9 to 5 job. "It is an any time job that puts me in any kind of situation ," said Southerly. His organization first strives to keep people in their homes. That can mean assisting with an electrical bill or getting the family plugged into the right programs that can help them.

They are frequently agencies with an experise in psychiatry, drug and alcohol dependence or counseling. One man needed transportation to work as a mason. Haven/Beat the Streets was able to purchase a $1,200 vehicle for him that gave him the means to work and be able to stay in his home.

When staying in the home is not an option, rapid rehousing is the goal.

Southrey describes a call he got from a 58 year old woman that was sleeping outside in 30°weather in Atlantic City.

He picked her up and provided a motel room for her. Southrey also has thirteen apartments in Atlantic City that he rents at very low cost to the tenants.

Sometimes Southrey goes to the Dollar Store and purchases $150 of food to distribute to those in need. He

often gives out blankets also. When he is not taking calls, Southrey is usually out talking with the homeless to simply let them know he cares. Southrey reports that 70-80% of homeless people have co-occcurring disorders and many have experienced trauma. "It is very important that they know someone still cares about them," said Southrey.

Paul Hulse is the Director of Outreach for Haven/Beat the Streets Ministries. Hulse worked and continues to work extensively with the homeless population in Ocean County. Still Hulse says he has learned a lot from Southrey.

"You don't look at what people aren't.

Look at how you can help. Earn their respect and only then, talk." Together they are a strong force for good in our community.

Finding Your Balance

the past two months or so on goal setting and defining your purpose.

It’s already late January and I’m sure many of you who set out with great intentions, new years resolutions and great enthusiasm for 2017, have fallen off the wagon so to speak. But if that is you, it doesn’t have to stay that way. The key to reaching your desired destination is to get back on track. Maybe you have momentarily “looked down” or forgotten the “bigger picture”. Consider this week's column a friendly reminder to not give up, but rather to look up and get back on track. You can do this, I promise.

ver feel like the wheels are spinning off your motorhome of life? You say to yourself, "I've got to find balance." It's amazing how the laws that apply to science crossover to the laws of life.

Sail the rough seas and you begin to feel sick. What does a seasoned boater tell you? Don't look down at your feet or over the edge to the water, focus way out on the horizon. It will help steady your sights and settle your stomach.

Remember when you were a kid and your gym teacher introduced you to the balance beam. If you were like me, you watched your feet … and chances are, you fell. But when you focused your sights on a distant point straight ahead, miraculously you kept your balance.

It's the same with life. The object of your focus is key to keeping balanced. Where to do you place your focus? If it’s on the distractions directly in front of you rather than the larger picture or your purpose or goal, you're going to lose your balance and fall.

For me, I need to keep my focus on the big picture, the things in life that matter most. My faith, my family and my determination to carry out what I feel is my purpose in life. Have you ever sat down, took the time and asked the questions that matter?

What's most important when it's all said and done? How do I want to be remembered? What do I want my spouse, my kids, those who knew me best to say about my life? You have to find balance and it starts with where you find your focus.

You can drive the most expensive, luxurious automobile money can buy, but if the wheels aren't properly aligned, things may look good on the outside, but I promise you will experience a bumpy ride on the inside.

Battle at Chestnut Neck

I

The Pirates of The Revolution

t was late September 1778 and British Commander General Henry Clinton had enough. He decided to take serious action against the privateers of southern New Jersey. Calling it “The Egg Harbor Expedition”, the General’s mighty fleet would root out the “nest of rebel pirates,” then advance up the Mullica and destroy the ironworks at Batsto. Nine warships armed with cannons and 400 soldiers set sail from British held New York City down the coast and make an attack. The ragtag group at the Jersey shore were in for a fight.

When the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776, the infant nation was in no position to defy British rule of the seas. Britain’s navy in the late 1700’s was the world’s most powerful. The Royal Navy— once the protector of American shipping—now made every effort to suppress and destroy it. The Americans responded to the situation with the time-honored practice of privateering. American privateering activity during the American Revolution became an industry born of necessity that encouraged patriotic private citizens to harass British shipping while risking their lives. The term Privateer refers to a private individual who received a government permission to attack and seize enemy ships, a sort of lawful Pirate.

The Pine Barrens, so remote and wild, was the perfect spot for smugglers and privateers to set up operations. The Great and Little Egg Harbor Rivers played crucial roles in this new economy, hosting warehouses and markets for the plundered British cargo. Chestnut Neck was a village on the Mullica River at the northern part of what is now Atlantic County, east of Port Republic. In 1777 it consisted of two taverns, a dozen or so dwellings and several warehouses. The landing on the river made for easy access to the ocean. The village's location made it an key shipping harbor for the Revolutionary War. When the Revolutionary war came, those same good harbor facilities

the American forces from the fort into the woods, where they scattered.

The British sunk several privateer ships they found. They destroyed the markets and warehouses. The homes in the village were burnt down.

Memorializing the 1778 Battle of Chestnut Neck, the statue of the Revolutionary War-era soldier is facing out to sea. It was built by Daughters of the American Revolution. To visit the memorial, take Parkway exit 48 to Route 9 south and keep an eye toward the East. made it a haven for the privateers. he captured ships were unloaded and auctioned locally. The vessels were converted to privateer boasts. War supplies were carried on wagons up to Burlington, then to Philadelphia and brought directly to Washington’s troops.

The year 1778 was a busy one for the Privateers. Dozens of ships full of materials bound for the British troops in New York City were raided. In August of 1778 alone thirty ships and their cargo were sold by privateers.

The most notable capture was the Venus of London. Its cargo consisted of fine broadcloths, linens, silks, satins, fine stockings, shoes, medicines, books, hardware, butter, cheese, beef, pork, and porter. The ship itself was also sold. It is believed that this capture was the final straw that pushed the British to act decisively.

While the British may have destroyed Chestnut Neck, they could not complete their mission of destroying the Batsto iron works.

Many of their craft were grounded in the shallows, plus it became clear that the Americans were on to their plans. Reinforcements, led

by General Pulaski were on their way. The British withdrew and sailed back north. Still, the British raid had permanently wiped Chestnut Neck off the map as an organized community. Three of the landowners who had their houses burnt – Micajah Smith, John Mathis, and Joseph Sooy – soon rebuilt their homes, while others rebuilt in nearby Port Republic. Chestnut Neck soon became a privateering center again. Today, the few houses and boat ramps of Chestnut Neck can be seen from the Garden State Parkway entering Atlantic County from the north.

Their navy mission started off well, as the wind was with the British. But by the next day, the winds changed directions and a storm began to rage. The harsh weather slowed the ships. It took them over four days to travel down the coast.

The delay gave the Americans a chance to learn about the plot and move many of their ships safety out to sea or hide them farther up the river. Most anything of value was moved away. The only ships left for the British were their own recent captured vessels.

There was a small fort to protect Chestnut Neck, but it was not equipped with cannons. The American militia were unable to put up much resistance against the British forces who opened cannon fire on the fort from their ships, and then came ashore attacking and driving

101,2 ounces goat cheese 2 tablespoons pureed chipotle in adobo sauce 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream Juice of 1/2 lemon Juice of 2 limes Zest of 1/2 lime 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons Texas Chili Spice Mix (see below) 1/4 cup canola oil 2 pounds skirt steak 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/3 pound sliced bacon, diced 4 cups finely diced yellow onions 2 cups finely diced green peppers 1/2 cup chopped garlic 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes, drained 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons dried Mexican oregano 2 tablespoons Texas-style chili powder (use 3 to 4 tablespoons for a thicker chili) 3 tomatillos, rinsed and diced 3 tablespoons corn masa flour (recommended: Masaca) 2 tablespoons pureed chipotle in

adobo sauce 5 cups beef broth • 2 16-ounce cans black beans • 1/2 bunch cilantro, coarsely chopped, divided • 1 13-ounce bag tortilla chips, crushed 1. Combine all the ingredients for the chipotle cream except for the zest in a food processor. Process until evenly incorporated.

2. Remove to a medium bowl and fold in the zest. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

3. Mix the Texas Chili Spice Mix with the oil to make a paste. Dust the skirt steak with salt, then baste with the paste.

4. Marinate for 1 hour and then grill over high heat to medium rare.

Set aside and allow to rest.

5. In a large, heavy-bottom pot, render the diced bacon until it is crispy. Add the onions, green peppers and garlic, and sautŽ until slightly brown.

6. Add the tomatoes, brown sugar, oregano, chili powder, tomatillos, flour, and chipotle. Heat for 3 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken.

7. Add the beef broth, bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Simmer uncovered for 1 hour.

8. Cut the steak against the grain into small cubes. Add the steak and beans to the chili, and simmer for an additional 20 minutes.

9. Add most of the chopped cilantro and serve over crushed tortilla chips with a dollop of chipotle cream and a sprinkling of fresh cilantro on top.

Makes 1 cup 2 tablespoons guajillo chili powder • 2 tablespoons chipotle powder • 6 tablespoons ground cumin • 4 tablespoons dry Mexican oregano • 4 tablespoons sweet paprika Combine all the ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Transfer to a covered container and store in a cool, dry place.

Kid-Friendly Restaurant Favorites

hile I love cooking, I love eating in restaurants just as much. Eating out was pretty easy when my twins were infants since they could be contained in their carriers. The situation deteriorated a bit between the ages of one and two because mealtime mostly consisted of food throwing. Once that subsided, we were able to take them out again. We still go out to dinner at 5:30 because they are programmed to eat early and now we are too. There are plenty of great kid-friendly restaurants at the shore that have become favorites for different reasons.

El Coyote in Egg Harbor Township has been a favorite for years. My kids love the fajitas and rice there.

The guacamole is always fresh and delicious. If you become a regular, you will quickly recognize the owner, Mary who makes my family feel welcome every time.

snacks at the end of the meal. But don’t be fooled, the food is also delicious. My daughter loves a good homemade soup and they always have great soups.

While the kids order pizza, I enjoy the vegetable involtino, thin pasta ribbons wrapped around vegetables and cheese.

Whenever anyone asks for a restaurant recommendation in Ocean City I always suggest Jon and Patty’s. The breakfast reminds me of something you would find at a bed and breakfast. It’s hard to resist the French toast and creative coffee drinks. With a newly renovated upstairs, they can accommodate large groups. The friendly staff brings crayons and coloring books for the kids and once they even got a sneak peek of what goes on behind the scenes.

They loved it!

Even though we are sad when seasonal restaurants close for the winter, it gives us plenty of time to miss them. If you haven’t taken your kids to The Clam Bar in Somers Point, it’s a must. Here is what I recommend: go during the week and go early. If you have to wait, they have chalk for the kids and there is a playground very nearby. My kids love the clam chowder (who doesn’t) and fried clams while my usual order is the wasabi soy tuna. Another seasonal favorite is the Margate Dairy Bar & Burger. If meat isn’t your thing, they make a great quinoa veggie burger. My kids eat well there because they know ice cream awaits them for dessert. If you get lucky on a Sunday in the summer you can catch magician Chad Juros entertaining customers.

So there you have it, some of our favorite kid-friendly spots at the shore. Having kids doesn’t mean giving up eating in restaurants or just doing so when you have a babysitter. Knowing which restaurants are kid-friendly helps! I would love to hear your favorite eateries around the shore to take the kids.

n Sunday February 5th in Houston Texas, arguably the biggest sporting event of the year takes place: The Super Bowl. This year's matchup features two great teams that absolutely deserve to be in this game.

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady lead the New England Patriots against most valuable player candidate Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. This Super Bowl will be the 7th for Brady and Belichick while Matt Ryan will be playing in his first. The Falcons will be playing in their second Super Bowl ever. They previously lost to John Elway and the Broncos in 1999. The Patriots will be playing in their 9th Super Bowl.

They are 4-4 in prior ones.

New England got to The Big Game by going 14-2 in the regular season despite losing Tom Brady for four games for the deflate gate scandal. They won the AFC East and earned the #1 seed in the playoffs. They easily beat Houston

and Pittsburgh to get to the Super Bowl. Atlanta got to The Big Game by going 11-5 in the regular season and winning the NFC South and earning the #2 seed in the playoffs. They beat Seattle and Green Bay to get to the Super Bowl.

This matchup will present the highest scoring offense (Atlanta) vs the highest scoring defense (New England).

This is only the sixth time this has happened; five of the times, the better defense has won. This game features two great Head Coaches. Dan Quinn has really turned the Falcons around, in second season while Belichick has been the Patriots for seventeen seasons.

Super Bowl pre-game shows will start at 9 am on game day and will be on all day leading up to Kickoff which will be shortly after 6:30 pm. Fox will televise the game with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman announcing. Lady Gaga will perform the half time show and the price for a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl is just over $5 million. This should be a great game, I hope you enjoy it.

Hooters, Temptations, Beach Boys Coming to Ocean City this Summer

T

he Open House takes place on JTickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 26) for the first wave of shows in the 2017 Summer Concert Series on the Ocean City Music Pier. The series will include the Temptations (June 26), the Hooters (July 17 and 18) and the return of the Beach Boys (August 21 and 22).

The Temptations show will include founder and surviving original member Otis Williams. The legendary Motown band has a catalog of more than 25 Top 20 hits and they’ve been performing live for more than 50 years.

The Beach Boys have played to sold-out crowds on the Ocean City Music Pier for the past two summers, and they’re making good on a promise to keep returning. They’ll perform four shows: 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, and 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

The Hooters will bring back a lot of memories for the folks who caught the Philadelphia-based band’s live shows on the Jersey Shore or listened to WMMR-FM in the 1980s. The band will reprise big hits like “All You Zombies,” “And We Danced” and “Day by Day,” and they’ll introduce newer material as well. The shows will be at 7 p.m. on July 17 and 18.

Concert promoter Bob Rose and BRE Entertainment announced the shows on Monday, and they are working to fill out the rest of the series with more great shows. Senior Moments

An occasional column on a senior’s perspective

N

ow, with that being said, I had another column practically finished for this issue and in my opinion, a pretty inspirational one but alas, recent events have demanded that it wait until another time. As I age, I am prone to express myself more directly and with less fear of reprisal. Maybe it is because I used to be more concerned what others might think or because I am more confident in the positions I am taking now but basically my filters are coming down.

Those who have known me for any ex-

tended length of time know that I am not malicious, hateful, bigoted, sexist or any other negative labels that may be thrown my way. However, I do have a dark and sometimes inappropriate sense of humor that has been honed to a fine edge over the years. This rather endearing quality has been tolerated and even encouraged at times. Enter Facebook, the election and The March.

When the “End of Times” comes, I don’t think it will be because of global warming, a nuclear holocaust or the crashing of the electric grid. I believe it will be due to the effects of social media and those who treat it like a 10 year old in a race car. Years ago, I held off opening a Facebook account. I wasn’t interested in where people were going to dinner or what their pet cat was doing and I sure wasn’t narcissistic enough to think people were that interested in my life. I finally caved because I saw it as a viable outlet to promote my photography. I was also able to reach out to relatives and friends around the globe and catch up after so many years.

Eventually, I was drinking the Facebook Kool Aid and accumulated friends, although selectively and sharing snip-

pets of our family’s life. It all seemed harmless enough. Recently, I had quite enough of the political venom that was spewing forth so I jumped in with a dark, edgy and true to my style inappropriate post, put on my blast goggles and just waited. Had I been a talented artist, it would simply be the political cartoon we are so used to seeing. It didn’t take long. I got the usual “likes” and “smiley faces” and of course, the eye roll from my wife but also some disturbing reactions. One person in particular reposted only a portion of my post and framed it in such a way as to make it offensive specifically to women. This elicited exactly the fiery response she sought but what my original post lacked. It gave her the platform and attention she so desperately craved and she used it as an

opportunity to shine a light on her own troubled past. Another person I called a friend, used a tragedy that our family endured as a comparison to how people are feeling about the political climate in our country and then “unfriended” me.

In conclusion, I have to say that this whole experience has been cathartic.

I dodged a serious health bullet and now view Facebook and friends with a new clarity. My list of Facebook friends have been pared down to people who really matter, who have something meaningful to add to my life and I have jettisoned much of the ballast that can weigh me down. The air on this side is sweet and I breathe it in with great gulps. By the way, if you have any photos of your cats I’m ready for them now.

wasn’t always a fan of winter.

I’ve never bothered to invest in proper outerwear or footwear, and commuting in the elements has always made me grumpy. After the predictable joy of the holiday season and the real winter sets in, we’re in absolute darkness for a good 2.5 months.

winter was silly and dramatic, and it stopped serving its purpose in my life.

We are fortunate to live in a part of the country that still experiences the seasons (even though our winters are becoming abnormally warm), and there is something to be gained from that shift in the weather. The stillness of winter compels us inward, both literally and figuratively. It stands in contrast to the vibrant activity of spring and summer, and it gives us space to explore our own quiet corners.

Winter offers me the time to cultivate inner warmth. What am I doing that supports my well-being?

What is holding me back? What habits can I cultivate to prime myself for growth and renewal?

As a solopreneur lady boss, I spend a good deal of time working from home. This is often less than glamorous. (For example: If I’ll be home most of the day, why should I put on real clothes? Why take a break? Why pay attention to the time and eat normal meals?) As someone for whom organization and structure have never come naturally, this home/work balance poses a unique set of challenges.

How do I define my workspace?

How do I set productive boundaries on my time? This winter, I have committed to getting to know myself and to understanding the ways in which I work best. Here’s what I’ve discovered: • I’m an early bird, and I thrive on a morning routine. I’m most productive in the morning, and when I set a positive tone for my day, that energy carries me through all of my daily projects and lists.

When I wake early, I give myself space to meditate, stretch, and consider my agenda and goals.

• I’m easily distracted, and I need to plan distraction into my workday. If I attempt to focus on any one thing for too long, the quality of my work diminishes.

The concept of “don’t rest until it’s done” doesn’t work for me. I do the thing, then I take a break,

and then I keep doing the thing.

This break might take the form of a walk, or a healthy snack, or a baby animal video on YouTube.

Breaks allow me to clear my head and return with a fresh perspective. This structure is vital for my personal and professional projects.

• My workspace is important, and “working from home” is not the same as “working anywhere.”

It can be difficult to create a space for productivity at home, a place so connected to rest and relaxation. I typically work at my dining room table (which I don’t often use for anything else, including dining). When I take a break, I leave my workspace.

Even if I just go into a different room, this subtle shift indicates to my brain that I’ve “left work.”

It’s important for me to set these boundaries to ensure my success throughout the day.

• I need to surround myself with good things. For me, this means: several notebooks for ideas; whatever books I’m reading (right now: The Norton Shakespeare and The Great Fires by Jack Gilbert); something that smells nice (a candle or essential oil); something that sounds nice (like, music); and natural light (another reason I prefer to get to work early). This creates a positive connection to my workspace and helps me feel more nourished and fulfilled.

Changing my relationship with winter has allowed me to embrace a new sort of productivity and stillness. If winter causes you to feel sluggish, sad, or annoyed, I invite you to explore that feeling.

he Pet Pantry, sponsored by the Absecon Veterinary Hospital joins the Regal Hamilton Commons 14 theater here for the opening weekend of the film, “A Dog’s Purpose,” from 3-8pm Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29.

The Pet Pantry, a non-profit organization, housed in the Community FoodBank of New Jersey will be in the theatre’s lobby accepting pet food donations. The Regal is located at 4215 E Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing, NJ, 08330.

The Pantry collects food and funds for clients of the FoodBank so when clients pick up food for themselves, now they can get food for their pets. Its mission is to ensure that the shelves of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey are stocked with food and supplies so pet

avid Mitchell learned at a young age the more you know, the better off you’ll be. Mitchell is the CEO and Founder of both Atlantic City Network and Dave's Computer repair.

He is also a professional photographer and skilled musician. However, the title Mitchell is most proud of is Dad. His daughter, Alexandra Sophia Mitchell is 3 years old and he fondly refers to her as the future CEO of Atlantic City Network.

Mitchell resides in Galloway and is only 33 years. He got his start early. In high school, he was known as the "Candy Man" because he sold candy to his classmates. "This allowed me to make my own money and not have to wait for a company y to hire me. That showed me the importance of having your own company and building a future for your family," says Mitchell.

The origins of Groundhog Day

very year on February 2nd, people anxiously await the appearance of a medium-sized furry mammal who they believe can predict if winter weather will rage on or if spring will arrive sooner than later. Although i's a rather strange means of prognostication, millions of people celebrate Groundhog Day, a tradition that is older than many people may know.

The first official Groundhog Day took place on February 2, 1887 at Gobble's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In the ensuing 130 years, individuals have gathered in Pennsylvania and other areas around the United States to find out if the groundhog will see his shadow. If the groundhog sees his shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, then spring will arrive early.

Although the Groundhog Day of today is relatively new, the concept is actually quite old and dates back to the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas. Candlemas is a Christian holiday commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Candlemas falls on the 40th day of the Christmas/Epiphany period and is one of the oldest feasts of the Christian Church, celebrated since the 4th century in Jerusalem. Around the 14th century in Europe, Candlemas began to overshine Pagan holidays like Lupercalia (Romans) and Imbolc (Celts).

Rather than torches and blessings from goddesses, on Candlemas custom called for members of the clergy to bless candles and distribute them to the people to symbolize that Christ was the light of the world. Weather played a role in the celebration of Candlemas. Rainy, wet weather was preferable because it suggested spring's arrival was on the horizon.

Candlemas was celebrated in many parts of Europe and eventually

spread to Germany, where animals were involved in the ceremony.

Hedgehogs were plentiful in the area, and celebrants believed if they cast a shadow during fair weather on Candlemas, more bad weather was in store. Pennsylvania's earliest settlers were German, and these immigrants brought their Candlemas traditions with them. But hedgehogs were not common in Pennsylvania, so settlers used groundhogs instead.

Thus, the groundhog was seen as a wise and suitable substitute for prognostication.

Today's celebrations include tens of thousands of visitors from all around the world who travel to Pennsylvania to see Punxsutawney Phil in person.

Phil has become a celebrity of sorts and has appeared on various television shows, on a jumbo screen in Times Square and as the star of the 1993 movie ""Groundhog Day.'' (Although the real Phil was not allowed to be in the movie because it was filmed in Illinois instead of Pennsylvania, and the Groundhog Day organizers were notably upset.)

Boasting a deeper history than many people may know, Groundhog Day will continue to delight revelers for years to come.

While it is my professional opinion that you need to have a claimed account for each platform (which I’ve discussed in previous columns), they each serve a different purpose and this explanation should help you determine where you best need to focus your efforts.

TWITTER If I only had a dollar for every time I had someone say, “I don’t even know how to twit. What’s a tweet?” I know, it can be a little confusing. Twitter is the real-time, short-shelf-life, fast-paced social media platform. It allows you to share photos, videos, and up to 140 characters. Your post is called a “Tweet” and when you want to share someone else’s post, it’s called a “ReTweet”. 66% of Twitter users discovered a new small or medium sized business. 94% of Twitter users plan to make a purchase from a small or medium sized business that they discovered through their Twitter feed. Out of that, 69% have already made a purchase!
