Tucked behind the clean coastal lines of Ocean City and Longport, you are a seamless addition to the bay grass.

At the same time, do not lose your wonder for things smaller than yourself: The glittering mosaics seamlessly sewn into the sidewalks, this season’s swell of cicadas.

The cat on the porch allowing its eyes to follow shapes you can’t see, smelling an invisible spot on the carpet.

The heel of your hand curves to form what you call Bay Avenue and your fingers extend into rows of houses that reach toward the Parkway.

If you asked, I would say the Parkway is simply a means of getting from place to place.

It thrills me to think I may be a cog in one of your constellations.

You may not know this, but from where we see you, you are your own cluster of stars.

If you asked, I would say: Remember to always look around and examine your contribution to the landscape surrounding you.

January Grab Bag

W

e will begin this column by correcting an unfortunate, embarrassing omission from last issue’s ‘Best of 2016’ feature. From the ‘Beverages’ portion, we somehow forgot to mention the name of our very favorite Atlantic City area breakfast and lunch locale; The Spot on Tilton Road.

Grilled pastrami on rye Mea Culpa. Mea Maxima Culpa. We did however, laud their extensive menu of ‘elixir’ drinks, and briefly mention their inventive, healthful cuisine.

My earlier mistake presents an opportunity to elaborate about The Spot’s superlative food. Drawing on influences from New American, Jewish/Middle Eastern and Pacific Rim styles, this bill of fare is simultaneously globetrotting and diverse, while still remaining approachable.

We’ve visited at least a dozen times in the last year or so and never left feeling less than thoroughly satiated. Service has also always been uniformly excellent, with wait

staff thoroughly trained to best describe, articulate and sell The Spot’s bounteous platters of fabulous food.

Just slightly north, a new Tilton Road restaurant, Blackwood’s Delicatessen, demonstrated remarkable potential during a pair of December to-go pickups.

Situated at the very rear of London Square Shopping Center, Blackwoods is a bit difficult to find, but well worth the effort. We also credit ownership with choosing to spend a year crafting a pleasant little space, rather than simply settling for another existing, former restaurant’s location. (We often wonder why owners think their business will work in locations where other restaurants have failed, but that’s just us.)

The menu here offers up a wide swath of deli-style sandwiches, steaks, burgers and wings. And much, much more.

Perhaps a little too much, but like many nascent establishments we expect to see Blackwood’s pare down their list of offerings to what sells best sometime later this year. What we did sample was startling; an expertly-fashioned, very traditional grilled pastrami sandwich on rye, their take on the New Orleans Italian classic ‘Muffaletta’ and several orders of wings. Pastrami, possessing an ideal ratio of fat-to-lean, presented wonderfully as a tender, warm mound of meat tucked into pillowy bed of rye. Authentically served

OC Surf Cafe with no accompaniment other than quality spicy mustard- maybe just a bit too heavy-handed, but no real issue- the juicy, tender beef was allowed full range as the lead player here.Their version of the Muffaletta similarly pays homage to its southern origins with a delightful olive spread binding together the blend of meats and cheeses.

Wings were a bit of a mixed result.

We ordered two of their four different varieties- chipotle BBQ and their hottest, Inferno- each sided by an ample portion of fresh-cut french fries. To our astonishment, all twenty wings arrived perfectly cooked, but not tossed in sauce. (In kitchen/chef terms, “naked.” or “dry.”) Sauces, plus a terrific bleu cheese concoction and generous bundles of carrots and celery, were all packaged up nicely in separate containers. We found this odd and a bit off-putting. Had we requested sauces on the side, it would have been admirably

handled. But wings, like all fried foods, need to be seasoned or sauced immediately upon removal from their bubbly cauldron of oil in order to properly absorb those additional flavors while still hot.

Taken home, reheated and coated with the sauces, they were still terrific. But they could have been better if sauced correctly by the kitchen.

The very best item we’ve encountered recently comes courtesy of our hometown’s O.C. Surf Café and talented chef/ owner Michael Carmody. Currently open Thursday through Sunday, Surf’s colorful, nostalgic, kitschy-beach atmosphere meshes ideally with O.C.’s family resort milieu. Food here is carefully managed and presented with an obvious eye towards both aesthetic beauty and delicious flavor.

Carmody’s blackened mahi-mahi sandwich is nothing short of an epic creation, combining three thick slices of fish, a wonderfully-vinegary cole slaw and mango/ papaya relish on a soft, but sturdy pub roll.

Mahi, not always the easiest fish to thoroughly cook without compromising its structural integrity, arrives seared with an impeccable, intoxicating blend of spices.

The slaw, cut to insure crunch, delivers on both taste and the oft-underappreciated element of texture. Even the fruity relish is more than an afterthought, adding sweet and sour essences to the already-lively proceedings. Ordered with waffle-cut sweet potato fries- from a half a dozen possible sides- we just might have found the finest fish sandwich anywhere right in our own backyard.

Kickstarting A Dream From the Editor

“H

ow do you just start a newsmagazine?” is what I’m asked most often when I tell someone my husband and I founded Shore Local. I chuckle because I’m often unsure how to begin to answer that question.

The origins of Shore Local lie in Bob’s 26 years of experience in the newspaper industry. He already knew the process. He watched as our small, family-owned newspapers and weeklies were purchased and taken over a large corporation based in Nebraska.

Bob saw the need for a locally-owned publication that focused on our communities’ great people, places, and events.

This vision came about over a year before our first publication. We hemmed and hawed, we dreamed, and then we took a big leap of faith.

Advertising has always been Bob’s specialty, but selling an ad for a product that didn’t exist yet was daunting for even the most seasoned salesman. We were faced with a big challenge, to say the least.

We contracted with a printer and graphic design team. We sought writers and photographers and each issue became better than the one before. We incorporated pieces from experienced columnists and photographers offered their work for the

covers. We listened carefully to our readers’ feedback. We continued to make solid connections. Marketing and web design specialists jumped on board. With each step, our vision became clearer and the product improved. We realize we have a long way to go. Please excuse some typos along the way!

They say you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step, and that was certainly the case for us. That said, the scariest moment was definitely that first step. With two children in college and very limited funding, we knew it was either sink or swim.

I’d like to tell you now, with our first year almost under our belts, that it’s gotten much easier. The truth is, during production week, we work 16 hour days. We used to fantasize about being our own bosses and taking off whenever we felt like it. Our current reality is that we have never worked harder or longer in our lives. However, we are still working for ourselves and we are sharing good news in the communities we love.

We are endlessly grateful for this opportunity and we thank you for taking the time to pick up this copy of Shore Local. We hope you find it interesting, unique, and full of local flavor that you won’t find anywhere else.

It’s Always Something at Gilda’s Club

“I

t’s always something,” is a phrase we can all relate to. It’s also the name of Gilda Radner’s book. Gilda was one of the original Saturday Night Live cast members. She wrote the book while at a wellness center in California during her battle with ovarian cancer. The center gave her and others information and psycho-

anxiety, depression and fear of reoccurrence? That is where Gilda’s Club makes a big difference,” says Erin McAllister, the program director.

“We are about supporting each other and building community, regardless of outcome.”

“Going to the groups at Gilda’s Club has helped me tremendously,” says Mary Anne Drake, who lost her mom to cancer at 16 years Jim and Rhea

social support as they battled cancer.

When she came back to the east coast there was nothing like that here. That became Gilda Radner’s mission and legacy.

Today Gilda’s Club is that place. It is a nonprofit organization that offers support for anyone touched by cancer in anyway completely free of charge.

Gilda’s Clubhouse is located on New Road in Linwood and provides a multitude of services including educational lectures, and classes for healthy a lifestyle, cooking, meditation, yoga, and tai-chi. Additionally their affiliates such as Atlanticare, Hope Community Center and Holy Redeemer offer similar services that cover the eight southern counties in New Jersey.

“When cancer touches a person it affects the whole family. You go to the doctor for physical care and medication, but how do you manage the

old. “Being able to talk to other kids my age who understood what I was going through meant so much. They all understood how I felt. There is a lot of support at Gilda’s Club.”

Now, 13 years later, Drake recently lost her Dad to stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This came after he recovered from Prostate Cancer that he had been diagnosed with only one year after her mother had passed. Drake adds “My life has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. Erin and everyone at Gilda’s have helped me so much because of their compassion and understanding. I love going there.”

Gilda’s Club offers many support groups and all are facilitated by a licensed mental health professional. If you have been touched by cancer in some way, you can call 609-926-2699 or just walk in anytime 9am-8pm on weekdays.

4 foods that can boost energy levels

iet can go a long way toward increasing or lowering energy levels. No one wants to consume foods that will make it harder for them to get through the day, so the following are a handful of foods that pack an energetic punch.

1. Cashews: Cashews, which are high in magnesium, help to convert sugar into energy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that mid-afternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so itÕs best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines.

2. Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when

the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If skinless chicken is not available, other foods that may provide this same effect include fish, lean beef and eggs.

In addition, lean meats like skinless chicken contain enough vitamin B to help ease insomnia.

3. Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue.

Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid- to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain.

4. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and thatÕs a good thing for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes awhile to digest, extending the energy-boosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets.

Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start.

And know what you want to do with the property (i.e., renovate and sell, remove and rebuild, or rehab and rent) before you buy. Fit the house to the plan, and not vice-versa. · Start small. If this is your first time out there, stick with properties that will turnover quickly. Research areas in and around urban centers or close to transportation and shopping. A good starter property is a small house or a condominium that can be refurbished and then rented. Rental properties offer steady sources of income when renters are properly vetted, offers Investopedia, an investment resource. · Look at many different properties.

Become an expert by learning as much as you can about what is out there. Work with a trusted agent, attend open houses, or put the word out there that you’re interested in buying a property. Hometown Hero: Mari Dottolo

I

n 2011, Mari Dottolo was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and became permanently disabled. She was forced to give up her career as a Director of Special Events in Atlantic City and took stock of what she could still do.

Mari was inspired to take action and contribute more, not less. Ironically, being disabled enabled Dottolo to do a tremendous amount of good works in our community.

Dottolo and her two daughters have always had a passion for the performing arts. When her youngest daughter dressed as Snow White while working at Storybook Land, she saw her daughter shine in the role of a princess and also how the children received her with so much joy and excitement. That moment combined with Dottolo’s background in event planning was the inspiration for her new venture called Little Angels Princess Events.

Little Angel Princess Events has always had a giving component. They have partnered with many nonprofit organizations including events with The Alcove for Grieving Children and

Families, Bayada Pediatrics, Make a Wish NJ, Pediatric Brain Cancer Foundation, Alex’s Lemonade and many more. One of Dottolo’s favor-

The Jersey Shore Children’s Museum was set to close with the demolition of the Shore Mall, but Dottolo was determined to save it. She spearheaded a committee to save the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum and reached out to the corporate office of the Hamilton mall. They generously offered a space and allowed them to move in. Mari then assembled a Board of Directors and coordinated multiple fundraising events.

Hooping For Health

OCEAN CITY EVENTS ▶ Ocean City will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at two events this weekend.

The DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CEREMONY starts at 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 14) at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School. The DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY OF SERVICE runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday (Jan. 16) with sign-ups at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center.

Both events embody the spirit of unity and community taught by Dr. King.

One highlight of the ceremony is a recitation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech by the Rev. Gregory Johnson of Shiloh Baptist Church.

The event also includes a variety of music and reflections on Dr. King’s work. Leroy Robertson, Tyrone Rolls and the Rev. Marcia Stanford of Macedonia United Methodist Church will be honored for their contributions to the community, and the winners of a student essay contest will be named.

Following the ceremony, everybody in attendance is invited to stay and enjoy a free dinner in the school cafeteria including home-cooked

fried chicken, macaroni-and-cheese, corn bread, collard greens and more.

On Monday’s federal holiday, all are asked to volunteer during a day of service in Dr. King’s honor. The event consists of a citywide cleanup from 9 a.m. until noon. Senior Moments An occasional column on a senior’s perspective

I

t was a holiday season of miracles, at least for me. Everyone once in awhile, one has to believe that miracles can happen especially if they are people of faith.

If you are an atheist, I then wish you luck. On Christmas Day I awoke with pain and substantial swelling in my right thigh. Thinking it was just a cramp, I resorted to the usual remedies of warm compresses and tried to stretch it out. When that proved unsuccessful, a trip to Urgent Care was soon followed by an ambulance to the local hospital. Ultrasound and CAT scan tests determined that, in layman terms I was having a vascular incident involving bleeding in my right thigh. A surgeon was called in and a stent was inserted into my thigh which for the time being stabilized me. Regular blood tests were conducted and my blood count was still going down which they said was not unusual but they would keep an eye on it. Finally, it was decided that they were going to give me a unit of blood to keep blood pressure and heart rate in check. While my wife and I were still processing this seemingly unlikely chain of events, a woman in a neat grey suit came to the door and announced she was the hospital chaplain and inquired as to what my faith was. I shot a glance over to my wife and said that it was a bit premature to have Last Rites and the sheet pulled over my head. The chaplain

must have read our reaction and told us that since it was the holiday season, they have ministers and rabbis visiting with the patients. Relieved, I consented to have the rabbis come in since I was trying to curry favor wherever I could get it. We said some prayers together and they reminded me that it was a season of miracles.

They left me with a sense of calm, a latke and a dreidel as a parting gift.

After five days, I was transferred to a Philadelphia hospital by ambulance. A word of advice, if ambulance drivers offer you pillows for a journey any longer than fifteen minutes accept them. The hour and twenty minute ride to Philly felt like I was on a stretcher attached to the hood of a WWII Jeep bouncing along a potholed dirt trail. Finally, the aromatic smells of a Chinatown evening wafted through the ambulance and I knew I had made it. Once I was admitted, the hospital started conducting their round of tests throughout the night violating me in oh so many ways. Every time to door opened, I reacted like Pavlov’s dog. Eventually all the tests were finished and I fell into the routine of vitals being taken periodically and the culinary uncertainty that soon followed. The bar on hospital food was never a high one so I would have to say, our low expectations were never exceeded. We began to view the covered platters as offerings from chefs on the TV show, Chopped.

My wife hesitated over the covered breakfast platter before lifting the lid and announced, “Who will be chopped tonight?� She lifted the lid and revealed a dollop of scrambled eggs. “You have been chopped,� we said in unison. For dinner I selecting the open face hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and carrots.

If you have ever ordered this in a NJ diner you know what to expect. In my weakened state, I had let my mind run

On New Year’s Eve, I was told my condition was stable and I was going home the next day. My wife and I watched the ball come down on midnight and were able to see fireworks outside between the buildings. We counted our blessings and spoke about how fortunate we were with the outcome and the fortuitous sequence of events. We were grateful that on Christmas Day the local Urgent Care was open, the Upper Township Rescue Squad was on duty, a surgeon who was spending Christmas with his family in Linwood left them to tend to me in the hospital. The nurses who were so devoted to not only seeing that my needs were met but were also concerned with the comfort of my wife at my bedside were extraordinary.

So while many people were celebrating the start of a new year with all its promise, we were celebrating my new life, a second chance. A chance to celebrate all life has to offer including the devotion of loved ones, the commitment of medical personnel and the inevitable open face hot turkey sandwich at a local diner.

away with this vision. I will attempt to describe what was unveiled in the loquacious manner of a certain food critic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A mere two pale slices of turkey were sinking into the soggy, quicksand-like slice of industrial white bread. A scoop of mashed potatoes resembling spackle squatted alongside the turkey while both were camouflaged by a coagulating grey brown liquid posing as gravy. The cut carrots added a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic landscape but were steamed, boiled or microwaved into a consistency and taste not unlike the potatoes. The highlight of the meal was the Jack and Jill water ice.â&#x20AC;?

As I clung tenaciously to some semblance of modesty, it became evident I was waging a losing battle.

Had I exposed myself to any of the attractive hospital staff under other circumstances, the term â&#x20AC;&#x153;visiting hoursâ&#x20AC;? might have taken on a different meaning. But here, the raising of my hospital gown didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t register even the slightest change of expression on their faces. Just the sheepish grin on my own face gave away my utter and complete submission.

9 things you might not know about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ell respected, honored and appreciated for his civil rights activism, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rightfully earned his place as one of the most influential figures in American and world history. Through his religious teachings and social activism, Dr. King played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

While Dr. King lived a good portion of his

life in the public eye, many facts of his life are not widely known.

In honor of his birthday and Black

History Month, the following are some interesting and less publicized facts about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1. Martin Luther King, J r.'s bir th name was not Martin, but Michael.

Dr. King's f a t h e r traveled to Germany and became inspired

by Protestant reformer Martin

Luther and thus changed his name while also changing the name of his then 5-year-old-son.

2. Dr. King was a prodigious student. Not only did he skip two grades and start college before formally graduating high school, but Dr. King also earned a bachelor's degree at age 19, graduating from Morehouse College in 1948 with a degree in sociology.

3. Though not a singer, Dr. King earned a posthumous Grammy Award nonetheless. In 1971, Dr. King was awarded Best Spoken Word album for Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.

4 . Although people cannot readily find photographs of Dr. King smoking, he was a regular smoker and even hid the habit from the public and from his children so they wouldn't take up smoking. It was believed Dr. King was smoking a cigarette when he was fatally shot.

5. While Dr. King is remembered as an enthralling public speaker, he actually scored poorly in public speaking during his fi rst year at seminary. He received a C in the class but earned straight As by his final year.

6. Dr. King was a Star Trek fan.

He convinced actress Nichelle Nichols, who played the role of Uhura on

Tragedy to Triumph: The Story of Baristaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coffee House

he sky fell in 2007 for Mark and Debbie Becker of Northfield.

After 26 years as a medical administrator, Debbie was laid off. Mark owned and operated his own landscaping company, but suddenly the phone stopped ringing. The economy was collapsing in a way never seen in America since the Great Depression.

Debbie and Mark loved a good cup of coffee and had often dreamed of owning a coffee house. When they traveled, they sought out local coffee houses and learned all they could about the nuances of the coffee industry. This was the time for them to follow that dream.

Baristaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coffee House opened in Galloway shortly afterwards. Debbie and Mark worked hard. They did all the necessary renovations themselves and worked 16-18 hour days. Debbie was also caring for her mom who had Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diease during that time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was an exhausting time,â&#x20AC;? recounts Debbie.

Three years ago, Baristaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coffee House moved to Central Square, Linwood. This was a dream location for Mark and Debbie, one they had waited 7 years for. The space was originally an art gallery and required major renovations. Debbie and Mark rolled up their sleeves and spent 5 months doing all the work themselves.

This was the first coffee house in Linwood and people were excited about it. Their first day open, they were extremely busy. Many of their Galloway customers followed them to Linwood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We give a good quality product because that is what we expect when we go out, great service, presentation and taste,â&#x20AC;? says Debbie.

he members of the Patcong Valley were hard at work over the year creating another high quality HO scale model railroad. It’s now open to the public over the next two weekends this January. They’ve made scenery improvements and changes to track routes. A new city area along with a lower area with industries fishing village, logging, brewing along with a circus scene. A beach and shoreline took shape in the last undeveloped area of the layout. The new city scene features a trolley system which will run thru the city streets.

The Open House takes place on January 14, 15, and 21, 22 from 10am to 4pm.

Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The Patcong Valley Railroad is located in Richland where Route 40 (Harding Highway) crosses the railroad tracks. Look for the two red cabooses next to the building.

Model Railroaders date back to the 1950’s where the original railroad was built in a chicken coop in a member’s backyard in Linwood NJ on Patcong Avenue. Following that period, members met in each other home until the early 1960’s. A second railroad was built on the second floor of a drug store in Ocean City NJ. Finally in 1968, the club moved into an old horse barn in Egg Harbor Township off Fire Road. This was renovated over the years to house a large museum quality HO Scale railroad that was enjoyed by thousands of visitors over the Holidays each year. Currently, the railroaders operate in an old sewing factory on route 40 in Richland, about ten miles from Mays Landing. The Club has been involved in a rebirth of the area along Rt 40 that is rich with railroad and cultural history. Many projects are underway that are transforming this area into a destination stop rather than a whistle stop.

Vegging at the Shore

I

am thrilled to introduce a new column to Shore Local called Vegging at the Shore. My name is Marci Lutsky and I’m a (mostly) vegetarian food blogger here at the Jersey shore. I will be sharing recipes and restaurant reviews in addition to telling you what is new and interesting for foodies.

Let me tell you a bit about myself.

I grew up outside of Philadelphia and spent my summers going “down the shore”. My family moved to the shore five years ago and in that time I have discovered that there is so much more to the shore food scene than just the few restaurants I knew about as a shoobie.

My husband and I have six year-old twins who are always in the kitchen with me. My daughter had a lot of feeding issues as a baby and the best way I knew how to get her to eat was to teach her about cooking and real food. They may still be small, but have

learned an appreciation for good food.

When I hear them ask if a restaurant is farm to table, it warms my heart!

I started cooking with them early, at the age of two. It wasn’t always pretty and things got pretty messy, but they now know their way around the kitchen really well. In this column I will give you tips for cooking with your kids and grandkids at different ages. I strongly believe that the more kids participate in the cooking process, the more likely they are to eat well and try new foods.

In addition to being passionate about good food, I also love helping the local community, which is why I helped start the Linwood Farmers Market in the fall of 2016. The Linwood Farmers Market Committee wanted to help local businesses and bring locally grown and produced products to the community. We were so pleased with the success of the market that we are planning a spring market. Stay tuned for more information!

SMOKY VEGETARIAN SPLIT PEA SOUP

M

y favorite restaurant when I lived in Manhattan was called Josie’s. Everything at Josie’s was healthy, delicious and dairy-free. I have ulcerative colitis and when the disease flares, I stick with a dairy-free diet. This can be limiting when eating out but I was always able to find something satisfying at Josie’s. I no longer live in Manhattan and Josie’s is no longer open, but I still have a cookbook from the restaurant, called Totally DairyFree Cooking. It’s one of my favorites, as is evidenced by the food-splattered, torn pages. The two recipes I make the most from that cookbook are Black Bean Hummus and Split Pea Soup. I always kick off soup season with this recipe because it’s my favorite.

You start by sautéing shallots, carrots, celery and onions.

This soup freezes nicely. You will just need to add some water when reheating it. I highly recommend making a big pot of this soup and stocking your freezer with it. You will thank me on those snowy days to come.

When those are golden you add some sherry and wine and wait for that to be mostly absorbed. Then you add the peas and stock and let that cook for at least an hour. The original recipe says to let the peas cook for thirty to forty minutes, but I find they need at least an hour to become adequately softened.

While I love making soup because it is so satisfying and filling on chilly days, the real reason is because I get to use two of my favorite kitchen products-my Le Creuset Dutch oven and my Cuisinart immersion blender.

I was lucky to receive the Dutch oven as a gift (which I had pined after for years) but the immersion blender is not expensive and well worth picking up on your next shopping trip. I used to transfer hot soup from the pot to the blender and not only would I burn myself, but I would make a mess of my kitchen. You simply put the immersion blender in the pot of soup and it blends it like magic, with no mess.

After using the immersion blender to puree the pea mixture, you add milk, miso and seasonings. You can add any kind of

milk for creaminess. I usually add almond or soy milk. If you do not have an intolerance to dairy, use whatever kind you prefer. Miso gives the soup a deep smoky flavor that most split pea recipes get from meat. Miso is not an exotic ingredient, just versatile and fantastic.

As is the case with most soups, the longer this one sits, the more the flavors blend together. My favorite way to serve this soup is with my husband’s delicious grilled cheese. It’s a perfect combination.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon minced shallots • 1 medium onion, chopped • 1 cup chopped carrots • ½ cup chopped celery • ½ cup dry cooking sherry • ½ cup dry white wine • 1 pound yellow split peas • 1 pound green split peas • 12 cups vegetable stock or water • 2 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper • 1 tablespoon miso • 1 cup milk (almond, soy or regular) INSTRUCTIONS • Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium heat. Add shallots and cook until golden, about 2 minutes.

Add onions, carrots and celery and cook, stirring, until vegetables softened, about 10 minutes.

• Add sherry and wine and simmer until liquid is reduced by half. Add both kinds of peas and stock. Bring to a boil and simmer uncovered for at least an hour, until peas are mushy. If liquid runs low before peas are finished cooking, add more water as necessary.

• Remove from heat and puree with an immersion blender until smooth.

If you don't have an immersion blender, carefully transfer mixture to a blender and process until smooth. Add salt, pepper, miso and milk. Continue to blend thoroughly.

Let sit for at least an hour to develop flavors. When reheating, you may need to add water.

AYS LANDING—Atlantic Cape Community College will welcome Peter Oudemans, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Plant Biology and Pathology at Rutgers University, as the Beacons by the Sea Visiting Professor for the spring semester.

Dr. Oudemans is stationed at the Marucci Blueberry and Cranberry Research and Extension Center in Chatsworth where his research tackles problems in the biology and control of fungal diseases of blueberries and cranberries. His research uses such tools as remote sensing and geographic information system methodologies to detect, map, quantify and track plant pathogens.

During his visit, Oudemans will serve as an adjunct instructor in the Information Systems and Aviation Department, teaching two courses: Special Topics in Information Technology – Applying Technology in Agriculture and

Remote Sensing Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems. In the Special Topics course, students will learn the basics of scouting for and solving agricultural problems on commercial farms. Students will engage in fieldwork with a limited use of drones.

The Remote Sensing course will introduce students to using unmanned aerial systems to gain information about the earth’s surface. Students will learn to analyze drone data and will engage in fieldwork using unmanned aerial systems to collect data for analysis and geospatial processing.

Oudemans, who holds a doctorate from the University of California, serves as the Rutgers University Cooperative Research and Extension Program Leader for Precision Agriculture and Natural Resources Management at Cook College.

These courses will meet at the college’s Mays Landing campus, located at 5100 Black Horse Pike. YOGA AT THE LIBRARY ▶ Atlantic County Library System/Egg Harbor Township offers monthly yoga to adults and teens on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 am.

CEAN CITY– Splashing their way into the New Year, 1,000 participants raced through the surf here at the third annual HERO Plunge on Sunday, January 1st in support of the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers.

Some braved the water up to their knees, while others took the full plunge. Many wore colorful costumes of superheroes or comic book characters.

The plunge raised a record $22,000 for the non-profit campaign to fund designated driver promotion and registration programs in partnership with schools and colleges, sports stadiums and bar and tavern associations. Several hundred plungers also took the HERO Pledge to be safe and sober designated drivers.
