Keeping With Tradition

I

that we don't usually set out to create them. They were just what we did. After a few years of doing it a certain way, or on a certain day, somehow, they become meaningful, a part of what makes us who we are.

All the clichĂŠs are true. The little ones grow up too fast and these simple traditions we made are what we are left holding onto. They are the simple actions, routines, or rituals, that bring us together time and time again.

s Thanksgiving about football, turkey, cooking or family reunions?

Most of us would answer "all of the above." Whether you cook, travel, play or watch football, what matters is that we all take a moment to pause and give thanks for our blessings. Our loved ones are usually at the top of that list. Bob and I are no different. We are so excited for our daughters to come home from college.

Neither of our 21-year-old twins has been home since August, so having all of our children under one roof for a few days is cause for much joy and excitement.

Over the years, the day after Thanksgiving in our house is spent breaking out the Christmas decorations. There is a ridiculous amount of decorations. It's an all-day job, to say the least.

"I could wait and do it later if you want to do something else that day, " I tell them.

"Nope, it's tradition," they reply almost in unison.

The funny thing about traditions is

Traditions are great and important, but life is also full of the unexpected: Some good and some tragic. They say if you want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans.

Boy, is that true for me. I never imagined my life where it is, or where it has been.

When we are counting our blessings, we must remember to include our most basic needs of food and shelter. It's easy to take

them for granted, yet imagine how hard every day would be without them.

Many people do find themselves in these difficult circumstances, and that is when they turn to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Hometown Heroes, Howard Hirsch, along with his staff and many volunteers, work hard to provide three meals a day, safe shelter and programming for those in need. Atlantic County is still reeling from the closure of so many casinos, leaving the area with high foreclosure rates and unemployment. The face of poverty has changed. It could be your neighbor or coworkers or children's friend's family. It could be us. Consider donating, dropping off a turkey or lending a hand this holiday season. There are many excellent organizations doing their best to meet this need.

Your paper really covered Veterans Day beautifully. The blue trim is genius. There should be statewide awards for the best free paper. Shore Local would win the oscar, hands down, as the most consistency best paper.

Dan C. Egg Harbor Township Very nice article Cindy wrote about honoring our veterans. The flag display she mentioned was organized by my wife Lynn and me. The soldier on the one banner is our nephew Joshua. He took his own life four years ago. Lynn's brother, Howard, has made it his mission to help raise awareness about suicides and other challenges our veterans face. He started the Flags for Forgotten Soldiers displays in Cincinnati earlier this year. Flags have been displayed in over a dozen states. There is a Facebook page, Flags for Forgotten Soldiers.

We Salute You

hat comes to your mind when you mention the Motorcycle community?

For many people, we immediately envision scenes from television shows like “Sons of Anarchy.” While very entertaining, and possibly accurate to the extent of Hollywood writing, nothing could be farther from the truth when it comes to the Patriot Riders of America.

I am a proud member of this organization, along with my husband and fellow “brothers and sisters,” who loyally wear the patch on our vests. We represent New Jersey Chapter 1, founded in September of 2016 by current President Chris Schelin, a U.S. Navy Veteran and Vice President Bill Beall, a U.S. Air Force Veteran. The Patriot Riders of America currently has 13 chapters in the United States, all devoted to the same cause: adhering to our mission statement, which outlines the

responsibility to our American veterans and the people in our community, supporting the Constitution of the United States, the right to freedom, motorcycle safety and supporting our fellow members.

Many Patriot Riders of America members are veterans, disabled veterans, active duty military, law enforcement, first responders, or sons and daughters of veterans. All members volunteer their time and efforts to the organization. The meetings and most of the events are held at the Cardiff Memorial VFW Post 8098 where many members are also affiliated with the American Legion, AmVets and DAV organizations.

Most recently the Patriot Riders, partnered with the Cardiff VFW Auxiliary, held the first annual Chicken BBQ. Veterans from Vineland Veterans home and Meadowview Veterans home were guests of honor, transported to the VFW Post 8098, along with their nurses’ aids, all paid for by donations collected by the ticket sales and raffle money raised from the chicken barbecue. Every member participated in this event, either collecting money from the community through ticket sales, donating baskets for the raffle, making and serving food, or playing live music. Members of the Massachusetts Patriot Riders, Chapter 6 showed their support by attending the barbecue, including a Gold Star Mother. Tracy Taylor was honored for her son’s Ultimate sacrifice, U.S. Army SPC Ken-

It will forever be embedded in my heart, the looks upon the faces of so many of our veterans, great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters and friends. All who gave something of themselves, bigger than all of us- the opportunity for freedom, democracy, the American way. Because of them, I am free. We are free.

Hometown Hero: Atlantic City Rescue Mission

TLANTIC CITY – The Atlantic City Rescue Mission is gearing up to provide hundreds of hot meals for the homeless and anyone else who wishes to join them on Thanksgiving.

Like every year since the mission opened its doors in 1964, giving and helping those less fortunate is what the mission is all about.

“We try to feed as many people as possible with a very large Thanksgiving dinner for our guests,” Howard Hirsch, director of development for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, said Nov. 10.

The Atlantic City Rescue Mission is a Christian-based mission, is nearly 100 percent privately funded and does not receive any government money. The focus is to provide emotional and basic needs such as shelter, clothing, food, counseling and programs for those in need.

But the mission is not a hotel, Hirsch

stressed. The focus is on improving the lives of homeless people and getting them into programs that will assist them in leading productive and happy lives.

And it starts with giving people the specific help they need.

The focus is restoring people to their own means.

“We try to get people in programs right away and have a foundation through God to not repeat bad choices,” Hirsch said.

Last week alone, 80 people stayed at the mission and 70

were in programs. There is a five-night maximum allowable stay for those who are not in some sort of program.

“For people who want to come in and lay around all day, this isn’t for them,” Hirsch said. “This is a place where we find out the issues and try and address them.”

Close to 50 percent of those who come to the mission are from Atlantic City and 20 percent to 30 percent are from other parts of Atlantic County, Hirsch said.

The Atlantic City Rescue Mission provides shelter, a warm meal and a big Thanksgiving dinner for its guests and others in the area who need a place to go on the holiday.

and provide shelter and food. When temperatures dip, it is paramount that people in need have shelter, warmth and food. The mission provides the essential needs.

And on any given day, the mission serves about 530 meals with the help of many volunteers. There is no way to know the exact number of people at the mission, since the number is fluid and the mission never turns anyone away. However, the maximum capacity is 350 people. There is a men’s floor, a women’s floor and a family center.

Every year the mission helps more than 3,300 homeless people in the area and many more people who just need to come in for a warm meal or pick up a food basket.

“If you look right now, the rest of the country is building, and things are coming back, but Atlantic County is not. We are in the top in foreclosures. Atlantic County has not recovered. Look at the amount of jobs lost and not replaced,” Hirsch said.

And while major companies could be coming to the resort in the future, it could take years to see the benefit of new jobs. “We’ve been behind the rest of the country,” Hirsch noted.

With casino closings, Hirsch said the people who used to be so giving – those in the service industry – are now clients of the mission.

“It is so sad,” Hirsch said.

For those struggling throughout Atlantic County, the mission is here to help with emergency food baskets. The baskets consist of about a week’s worth of non-perishable foods. That means a person could use their money to pay rent, the mortgage or utility costs instead of for food. It could mean the difference between being homeless or keeping one’s home, Hirsch said.

The baskets are available Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. A person can go to the mission and show ID to get a food basket.

Hirsch said people are so generous over the holidays. People donate their time and their funds. But people have to remember that the homeless have needs year-round.

“During Thanksgiving, everyone gives a lot. It is our biggest time of year to get donations,” Hirsch said.

Christmas is also a time when a lot of people donate, he noted.

“It’s the first week of January through March that everything stops,” he said.

The mission has several fundraisers to help offset costs in those months.

“We just want to get people off the streets and help them get into programs,” Hirsch said. “Helping people is what the mission is all about.”

The Atlantic City Rescue Mission is at 2009 Bacharach Boulevard in Atlantic City.

↘Continued from 9 Ventnor Holiday Parade

For over 30 years Ventnor City has been sponsoring a Holiday Parade. This year Ventnor City is hosting the second Twilight Holiday Parade and Kid’s Block Party on Ventnor Avenue for the Children of Ventnor and the surrounding area at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. The Parade will begin on Ventnor Avenue at Derby Avenue and end at Troy Avenue.

The theme of the 2017 Parade is “It’s a Small World” focusing on the diversity of Ventnor’s population. Ventnor City Schools will have flags and dress from various cultures throughout the world that are represented in the Ventnor community.

Mainland Regional High School and Oakcrest High School Bands, plus Absecon Island VFW Post 215, will be leading the parade. Businesses decorated in clear lights will have sidewalk sales, restaurants will be open for parade goers to enjoy fine food, and sounds of the holiday will be parading down Ventnor Avenue ending with a Kid’s Block Party between New Haven and Troy Avenue. Children can meet Santa Claus at the firehouse and enjoy other activities that will include free horse drawn carriage rides, obstacle course, inflatables, concessions, and multiple vendors.

Preparing for Thanksgiving Mentally and Physically Thanksgiving may be focused heavily to food. It should be viewed as another day, another meal. Sometimes changing behavior - how much we eat - means changing the way we think first. It starts in the mind.

Do you eat when you’re stressed?

Bored? When a lot of food is staring you in the face? Figuring out what your triggers

t’s a time for giving thanks, counting blessings and feeling grateful. What are the things I’m most grateful for?

Family, healthy, wealth, rest, life’s blessings and food. The things I’m not so grateful for? Food coma, stomach ache, bloating and all the extra pounds that I swear I’ll lose come January.

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie…oh my! I love Thanksgiving, but I don’t love that it’s become a holiday focused so much on food and Black Friday shopping too. Whoever started the trend of opening stores on Thanksgiving by the way should be turkey-fried. But I digress. Thanksgiving should be a time to relax, reflect, spend time with family, count blessings and give thanks.

Thanksgiving is a holiday, but not an excuse to gorge. People’s perception of

celebration. I suggest that you start with a club soda if appetizers are served before the meal, and save that glass of wine for the dinner table. This way you will not overdo calorically, but more importantly, you will be less triggered to overeat.

Fill your plate shamelessly full of baked vegetables and salad first. They’re lower in calories and the fiber will fill you up keeping you feeling satisfied longer. This will prevent you from eating too much of the more calorie dense foods and grazing later on.

If you have some control over preparing the meal, upgrade your favorite traditional dishes with lighter ingredients. Look outside traditional Thanksgiving dishes, for healthy and delicious alternatives. As always, the key is to cook foods you like and will eat, so you do not feel deprived.

And we can’t forget desserts. Make a choice to taste a sliver of your favorite pie.

Tomorrow is a new day. Back on track as usual, after a wonderful day with friends and family.

Holiday Shopping “Earlier Than the Bird”

cean City’s downtown shopping district kicks off the holiday season with a unique small-town event on Saturday, Nov. 18. The “Earlier Than the Bird” Downtown Shopping Extravaganza invites everybody to shop in their pajamas to take advantage of early-bird shopping specials from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event gives everybody a chance to beat the crowds, avoid the malls and get some shopping done on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

In addition to taking advantage of hourly discounts and specials, shoppers can enter in stores to win door prizes and gift certificates. Free coffee will be available at Jon and Patty’s Bistro (637 Asbury Ave.), Ocean City Coffee Company (Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue) and Starbucks (11th Street and Asbury Avenue).

Drip and Scoop (960 Asbury Ave.) will offer free standard doughnuts.

WAYV-FM 95.1 will broadcast live from Mark Soifer Park at Ninth

Street and Asbury Avenue, and that’s where the door prize winners will be announced at about 11 a.m. Ocean City’s own turkey mascot will be strolling the Avenue and awarding free turkeys to the best-dressed.

Shore Medical Center Names Dawn Lee November Guardian Angel

OMERS POINT - Shore Medical Center is proud to recognize emergency department nurse Dawn Lee, RN, as its November Guardian Angel of the Month for providing passionate and exceptional care to Shore’s patients.

The Guardian Angel program was established to enable members of the community to say thank you to a special Shore caregiver through a donation to the medical center.

Lee was hired as a nurse in Shore’s emergency department in 2013, where her roles include triage nurse, charge nurse and critical transport nurse.

Annmarie Guerrieri, RN, BSN, nurse manager of the emergency department, says Lee gives 100 percent to the department and her patients.

“Dawn is skilled at multitasking while always keeping her main focus on her patients. She’s a team player and strong advocate for her patients and their loved ones,” says Guerrieri.

The Spot: A Hidden Gem

mid a fast-food culture and curbside greasy spoons stands, The Spot, a local restaurant advocates for the farm-to-table movement, by serving dishes made from fresh, locally produced organic ingredients.

Co-owners Chef Jonathan Sands and Erin McGee pride themselves on making their menu items from scratch each day.

Located in a strip mall along Tilton Road in Northfield, The Spot is a small restaurant featuring fresh, wholesome food with big flavor. It offers delicious and creative veggie, vegan, gluten-free dishes in a comfortable space lined with comfortable repurposed wooden furniture.

It took my dining partner and me quite a bit of time to finally choose what we wanted to eat from their impressive menu. While we decided, I sipped on some

homemade watermelon lemonade, which was incredibly tasty and refreshing. My dining partner opted for some homemade kombucha, which, according to him, gives you incredible energy. Homemade elixirs and lemonades change with their specials menu each month. We finally decided on the "Feel Good" yummy quinoa salad on a bed of deconstructed guacamole served with corn chips. Ask for more corn chips with this, you'll be scraping every bite off the plate.

ince Nick and I first got together more than six years ago, we’ve viewed each holiday as another milestone: First Christmas together. Second Valentine’s Day. Third Fourth of July. For us, each holiday is a celebration of being together.

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. For me, it signifies family, generosity and the warmth of coming home. Nick and I moved into our house about a year ago and we finally have enough space to host Thanksgiving dinner. That said, the physical house doesn’t matter quite as much as the home – that shared space we have built over the past six years - in various houses and apartments in several different cities. Home is the space we inhabit when we are together – wherever that may be – and this Thanksgiving we get to share that with some of the people

we love the most.

Every year at the dinner table, I ask everyone to share what they are thankful for. It's extremely important to me that we do this as a family. We're all humans and we all enjoy our share of problems and challenges. There's a lot expected of each of us every day and we have to do hard, unpleasant things like pay our bills and clean the toilet. In light of this, it can be easy to forget the good stuff – the elements of light and ease that make our days less heavy. A useful practice to bring all of the light into proper focus, is to compose a gratitude list. Bonus fun fact: It's super easy and you don't have to wait until Thanksgiving to do it. In fact, it can be a powerful and simple daily exercise.

Why don’t you try it now? Put the magazine aside for a moment. Consider those things that make you smile the biggest. Write them down.

If it’s one of those horrible no-good days on which it’s challenging to find any reason to say, “thank you,” consider what’s available to you in this moment.

Do you have eyes that see? Do you have lungs that allow you to breathe air? Do you have a heart beating in your chest?

hat motivates people to run for office, particularly in the recent toxic, sometimes hostile political climate?

For Atlantic County Freeholder-Elect Ashley Bennett, 32, of Egg Harbor Township, it wasn’t merely a knee-jerk response to a sexist remark made after the Women’s March in January, although that quite possibly fueled her fire. As an independent woman in the mental health field, with a background in emergency services, Ashley has been on the front lines of substance abuse and the opioid epidemic crisis.

She’s witnessed firsthand what it has done to families and communities in South Jersey, as well as the restrictions on the system to turn it around. Using her elevated platform, it is her desire to close the gaps that she sees in accessing care through progressive policies and effective legislation.

Ashley is also passionate about economic development in Atlantic County. Having witnessed hundreds of families negatively impacted by casino closures, she is all too familiar with the struggles in the aftermath.

She would like to see expanded

programs to help residents with healthcare benefits and ways to help struggling residents maintain home ownership. She also envisions bringing financial relief to retired seniors by having their property taxes stabilized to assist them in continuing an independent lifestyle.

Ashley's unseating of her Republican challenger John Carman in the Nov. 7 election has garnered her national media attention, including the following: MSNBC, CNN, Today Show, Washington Post, New York Times and Time Magazine.

As an elected official, Ashley sees this service to her community as an embodiment of her skills as both a counselor and social worker - to learn and to listen. Inevitably, the goal for her term is to remain visible and accessible to her constituents.

What motivated this humble, double master’s, pursuant physician, to run for office? She hopes to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to step out-and step up! Tune into your community and most of all, “Follow Your Passion!”

Turkey Alternatives on Thanksgiving Vegging at the Shore

here is no rule that says you must serve turkey on Thanksgiving. Seriously, the holiday police will not come to your house. I will be hosting a small family gathering this Thanksgiving and very few people at my table eat turkey.

I plan on skipping the turkey this year and loading up on vegetarian options. If you want to do the same, here are some suggestions for what to serve that will leave your guests full and satisfied.

Tofurkey. Yes, I realize that it’s a funny name to say, but you would be surprised at how good a tofurkey can be! It’s like a turkey except that it’s made with wheat and tofu, filled with rice and bread stuffing. It is the most similar substitute to turkey you can get without eating turkey. I’ve tasted it and will say, it’s a great option if you want a meat-free holiday meal.

Vegetarian meatballs or meatloaf.

If you read this column regularly, you know that I’m a fan of meatless meatballs and meatloaf. Ingredients that I use in my meatless meatballs range from broccoli to tempeh. For meatless meatloaf I favor bulgur or lentils. You will not miss the meat if you go with vegetarian meatballs or meatloaf.

Seafood. Seafood is one of the easiest Slow cooker substitutes if you Pumpkin lasagna is want to avoid poultry a delicious dish. or red meat. It cooks quickly and is quite elegant. Salmon is probably the best crowd pleaser when it comes to seafood. Salmon can be roasted, grilled and pan-seared. This is ideal if you are like me and find yourself planning out when each dish will go in the oven at what time. In an ideal world I would have a double oven, but I don’t, so I rely on my grill - yes, even in cold temperatures - and stovetop. If salmon isn’t your thing, crab cakes or fish cakes are likely to please a crowd. You can buy them pre-made at many of the

local seafood stores like Bob’s Seafood or Sublime Seafood Company.

They are also quite simple to make and quick to cook.

Side dishes as main dishes. Side dishes are my absolute favorite part of Thanksgiving.

tation. If it only gets lukewarm reviews, it’s out for the following year. When I go back for seconds - and sometimes thirds – it is always for side dishes, so I like for those to shine on my holiday table.

It’s OK to have pasta. Does pasta really belong on your Thanksgiving menu?

Why not? I make a delicious pumpkin lasagna in a slow cooker which is perfect for the holiday. It has pumpkin a no-brainer for Thanksgiving. The other reason that I love this recipe is that it’s made in the slow cooker which again frees up your oven.

If you plan on skipping the turkey this year, I hope this gives you some inspiration so that your guests will still feel satisfied and full. If you shop at one of the major supermarkets like Shoprite and qualify for a free turkey that you don’t plan on cooking, donate it to the food bank. That’s my tradition with my kids. Don’t let it go to waste. Have a delicious and happy Thanksgiving!

Senator-Elect Brown Makes History and Other Post Election Analysis

N

ew Jersey Senator-elect Chris Brown made history on Nov. 7. He was the only candidate in America to flip a previously held Democratic state legislative seat to Republican.

This gives you an idea of the length and breadth of what was nothing short of a Democratic wave election. There were state-wide races in New Jersey, Virginia and Maine, along with other special elections around the country.

Brown will succeed the late Senator Jim Whelan in January 2018 and will serve a four-year term for the first time in in his state legislative career. Brown had won three consecutive times for a

2nd District Assembly seat.

The Democratic nominee Colin Bell lost by nearly double-digits to Brown.

Brown won at the voting machines and the vote by mail ballots. For Bell, it's three strikes and you’re out. Bell has now lost three times in-a-row: Freeholder, Assembly and now the Senate.

Brown defined his opponent early on and he never took his foot off of the gas pedal. Bell couldn't effectively respond to the Brown attack about his property tax lien business. Brown drove Bell's negatives to a substantial multi-double-digit percentage.

Even on General Election day, Bell was only known by about 40 percent of the voters in District 2. His negatives were more than 20 percent.

In Cape May County, the popular Democratic Senator Jeff Van Drew won re-election, earning 65 percent of the vote, a nearly super natural in our divided times.

Van Drew granted a "Hurley in the Morning" exclusive on-air interview on Thursday, Nov. 9, where he all but declared his candidacy for the 2nd District United States Congressional seat.

Van Drew has already received one of the most important endorsements for the candidate who wants to ultimately be successful. South Jersey Democratic Power Potentate, George Norcross, III has already publicly confirmed his support for Van Drew's candidacy. Van Drew

Senator-Elect Chris Brown will be very difficult to beat for both Democratic and Republican challengers.

Several no name Democrats with nearly no name recognition in Atlantic County whatsoever also won in the at large races. Caren Fitzpatrick for Free-

holder, Eric Scheffler for Sheriff. Democrat Ashley Bennett won the race for Freeholder in District 3.

A footnote regarding Bennett's win over incumbent John Carman. Even in a big Democratic year, this was a very safe Republican seat, however, Carman's Facebook social media meme post proved to be fatal. It was seen as sexist and degrading to women.

There is no doubt that a number of women voters disqualified Carman over the meme. The local, metro and national media went full blown market saturation coverage, attacking Carman at a visceral level.

By comparison, during this same election season, New Jersey Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo posted on the same social network a highly offensive video, with an invented caption "Illegal Immigrants Training for the Trump Wall," showing men of ethnic decent running up the wall with ladders.

Mazzeo did not receive any national media attention and barely faced any local media market criticism. The biased

Head of the River

id you know there is a church in Estell Manor, NJ, that’s almost as old as the Declaration of Independence? Head of the River Church, just down the road on Route 49, has been standing sentinel since 1792, which makes it the oldest standing church in Atlantic County and one of the oldest churches in the country.

At least two Revolutionary War soldiers are buried on the property: Jeremiah Smith and William Smith, both brothers and both captains. The cemetery in itself is a site to behold.

The sandstone grave markers have long been blackened by over two centuries of sunshine. Walking through this burial ground, with the pine trees blowing in the wind and the birds chirp-

ing all around, brings a sense of peace to anyone traversing the area.

The church was actually just one part of a prosperous village that utilized the Tuckahoe River for three of the major industries in early South Jersey history: bog iron, cranberries, and lumber. The bog iron and the lumber were obviously used for the war effort, keeping pockets fat and businesses plentiful.

Now, the property is only open a few times a year, mostly for weddings, funerals, and holiday celebrations.

More importantly, at least regarding this small series on the Estell family, two members of the family are buried at Head of the River: John C. Estell (1747 – 1793) and Joseph Estell (1745 – 1793). Research on such obscure history can be frustrating, to say the least, for any burgeoning or aspiring historian. The Internet and Google are great tools for the initial task, but aren’t nearly as sufficient in a case like this.

I did happen upon a John Estell who was brother to Daniel and had land grants given to him by George I and Queen Anne. At one point, he owned more land in Atlantic County than any other person at the time.

This is all very interesting, but he’s not

Joseph Estell is an even harder individual to track down. There is virtually nothing about him on the Internet, other than his cemetery listing on Findagrave.com. I would like to think that he was just as important an individual as Daniel and John, but I cannot be sure.

There was a Joseph Estell appointed administrator after John C. Estell died, but there isn’t much else about this Estell offered.

Some may find all of these dead ends maddening, but I find them ex-

citing. It’s like piecing together two puzzles where all the pieces were packed away together in the same box. Regardless, if you haven’t been to Head of the River Church, you should really check it out. It’s a piece of our country’s earliest history, right in our back yard.

The final segment to this three-part series will be regarding Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston, the first female mayor in New Jersey.

local daily newspaper did one article, with nowhere near the same intensity as their relentless Carman prosecution. The same newspaper did repeated articles criticizing Carman.

The local daily let Mazzeo get away with pleading, "The Mr. Magoo Defense."

Mazzeo blamed his poor eye sight. The process of sharing the post required Mazzeo to make multiple steps. You can't do it by mistake. It turned out to be no problem for Mazzeo. A double-standard was in raging effect.

Mazzeo's insensitive post was just as bad as Carman's because he purposefully painted all Hispanics as illegal immigrants. The local daily also took the opportunity in the one and only Mazzeo article to entirely restate Carman's issue. A dirty trick that unprofessional members of the media do to help the person they want by deflecting attention to someone else.

Add to this, Carman's Confederate Flag patch on his American Legion motorcycle riding jacket late in the campaign and it was simply too much for him to overcome. The same biased media used the second issue to entirely

bring back the first. It was devastating to Carman's candidacy.

Special recognition goes out to Atlantic City Mayor-elect Frank Gilliam, Jr. He defeated a popular and viable incumbent at both the polls (by 79 votes) and Gilliam dominated the vote by mail ballots over Mayor Don Guardian by a margin of 1661 to 364.

Incumbents George Tibbitt, Mo Delgado and newcomer Jefree Fauntleory, II won the three Atlantic City Council at Large positions by a wide margin on the voting machines and the vote by mail ballots.

Fitzpatrick also has earned our over achievement award, as she finished as the high vote getter for Atlantic County Freeholder at Large.

The upcoming 2018 mid-term elections will be more interesting than ever, with an open seat in the 2nd Congressional District with the upcoming retirement of Frank LoBiondo. LoBiondo exclusively confirmed to me that he intends to serve the remaining 14 months of his term. His leaving early is not an option for those salivating to have a chance to grab his seat by appointment.

Bird Migration

A

s the month of November draws to a close, so does the migration season. While most birds have flown off to exotic locations for the winter, others, like the indigenous American Black Duck, are preparing to hunker down for the next few months.

We are now at the peak of migration season here in New Jersey. Many of the water birds, gulls and sea birds like the gannet, scooter and loons are progressing south.

The sparrow and kinglets are continuing their journey south through the month of December, and by this time next month, we will see the last of the songbirds, hawks and water birds. Very few of these birds will be seen in our region until their return in the spring.

New Jersey is a Mecca for spotting migrating birds along their journey south,

and part of that reason is thanks to our geography. Our region is part of the Outer Coastal Plain. Consisting of barrier islands, marshes, back bays and flat land, this area provides an abundant source of food and a constant breeze, formed by temperature differences between the land and ocean.

These conditions help give lift to the birds along the migratory path and make our coastline a prime location to spot rare and exotic species throughout the season.

Users of the website eBird.org have spotted over 360 different species of in our state this past year. Many of these species migrate along a path known as the Atlantic Flyway. Like highways specifically designed for birds, there are four major flyways in North America, and each of these paths has different land factors that act as a navigational tool for migrating animals.

The Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway is a popular nesting spot for all types of birds, including the piping plover.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, nearly one-third of piping plovers can be found nesting here in South Jersey.

During the winter, these birds will travel over 1,000 miles to the coast of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

You may have noticed that most seagulls have long left our coastline for warmer climates. The laughing gull migrates from the

Bird enthusiasts in our area have been spotting a number of unique visitors this season, including the common greenshank.

Noted for their somewhat long beaks, these wading birds have recently migrated from as far as the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, a 4,000-mile journey across our continent.

Migration season brings vast opportunities to prime locations to see these extraordinary birds. The site had originally housed the Seaside Hotel, but its owners moved it closer to the ocean in 1890, eager to profit from the growing success of the Boardwalk. Situated in the shadow of nearby luxury Boardwalk hotels like the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall, the wood-framed Holmhurst enjoyed quiet success as a small, family-run hotel. It was supposedly the first hotel in Atlantic City to have its front desk on the ground floor, and air conditioning was never needed outside of its dining room due to ocean breezes passing down the street. The 135-room Holmhurst survived the initial wave of casino development in Atlantic City, but its owners were worried that its days were numbered. The transformation of the nearby Haddon Hall into Resorts Casino had changed the feel of the neighborhood, as well as the expenses of operating there, and a new addition to the casino threatened to choke off the Holmhurst’s access to ocean breezes. In 1985, the old hotel was torn down.

uilt between 1929 and 1932 by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company of Merrick, Long Island, N.Y., the Boardwalk Hall Pipe Organ was designed by Atlantic County State Senator, and noted organ architect Emerson L. Far too many parents and grandparents seem to spend most of Thanksgiving watching football on TV and rushing out for the latest pre-Christmas sales. Many children and grandchildren spend most of their Thanksgiving dinner staring at their phones and texting and sharing social media posts with friends at other dinners.

Here are some thoughts on how we might to change this.

1. At least once during Thanksgiving, tell your children and grandchildren how much you love them. Then tell them how you wish they could live in an America that is as safe, comfortable, and prosperous as the America we grew up in. It may uncomfortable. You will not undo years of indoctrination with a single conversation. However, it is important to suggest that they doubt and question what they are told in school and on TV. It is the first step in getting them to think for themselves.

2. Tell you children to Google “Squanto.” Squanto was an English-speaking Indian who miraculously walked out of the woods and taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn and squash, and where to catch fish. When they read that remarkable story, they

Photo by Carla Alburger. will also learn that most Indians who lived in Massachusetts died from disease long before the Pilgrims arrived.

They will learn how Squanto’s disease-weakened tribe was threatened by other Indian tribes who were brutal and aggressive.

3. Also tell your children to Google “Pilgrims Socialism.” Despite Squanto’s help, the Pilgrims barely produced enough food to survive during the first two years. That was because they ran their settlement as a socialist commune.

There was no privately-owned land.

Everyone worked commonly-owned fields together. Everything produced

was put into a common storehouse, and given out based on need.

William Bradford, the colony’s governor, explained the problem in his journal.

“Young men resented working for the benefit of other men’s wives and children without compensation.

Healthy men who worked thought it unjust that they received no more food than weak men who could not. Wives resented doing household chores for other men, considering it a kind of slavery”.

To fix these problems, the Pilgrims got rid of socialism in their third year.

Governor Bradford’s journal continued: “At length, after much debate of things, the Governor (with the advice of the chiefest amongst them) gave way that they should set corn…And so assigned to every family a parcel of land.”

The colonists, each of whom now had to grow their own food, suddenly became very industrious, with women and children who earlier claimed weakness now going into the fields to plant corn. Three times the amount of corn was planted that year under the new system.

After getting rid of socialism, the Pilgrims traded their surplus food for furs from the Indians, which they then traded for luxury goods from Europe and the West Indies. Only then did they live the American dream and have plenty to be thankful for.

Holiday Travel With Kids

ith the holidays approaching, you may be planning to travel with young children. While this may be a daunting thought, it does not have to be scary and it may be fun. With proper planning there are many problems which can be avoided.

My twins turned seven last week and

we’ve been traveling with them since they were babies. I will never forget the first time we flew with them. They were 14 months old and both had double ear infections. I remember thinking that I would never travel with them again after that experience. I’ve found it gets easier. If you let fear hold you back from doing the things you want to do and going to the places you want to go, you will miss out!

Here are some tips to make travel easier.

Send what you can ahead to your destination. No need to pack diapers, formula and snacks if you can have them delivered. This will eliminate stress about remembering to pack those things and will also leave you with extra room in the car or in your suitcase. If you are tight on space, eliminate big items like strollers. Find out if you can rent or borrow one at your destination.

Snacks, snacks and more snacks. When in doubt, feed them. When we fly I always bring a cooler bag full of sandwiches and snacks. Stick with snacks that you know your kids will eat but also throw in some new ones to keep it interesting. Hot water is usually available in the airport or on an airplane so cups of oatmeal or macaroni and cheese that you just need to add water to are always handy. I don’t recommend giving kids candy, but I always have lollipops on hand for takeoff

Now that my kids are a bit older, our car activities have changed. We rely on audiobooks to get us through long car rides. Audio books are fun because we are all engaged in the same activity.

The most important thing to remember when traveling is that everyone will need some time to adjust to new surroundings and possibly a time change.

Be flexible. Your kids may not nap or eat at the same exact times they do at home, but a little change won’t hurt them. The more you travel with kids the easier it will get, I promise. Have a safe and happy holiday!

don’t know what sparked them, but a few nights ago I had the craziest dreams. I’m not sure if it was something I ate, something in the back of my mind although the dreams really didn’t have anything to do with what’s on my mind these days. If you asked me to tell you about the dreams now, I couldn’t. I really can’t remember a thing except for the fact that they were strange, and it seemed as if I was dreaming all night long.

Researchers tell us that in reality it wasn’t all night long. In fact, dreams I thought lasted 10 - 30 minutes probably were only about 10 - 30 seconds. It has been said that many times our dreams are nothing more than our sub conscience working out issues or situations in our lives that our brains are dealing with in the conscience. I’ll take their word for it. But now I’m even more confused.

What are you dreaming these days?

I’m not talking about the dreams in your sleep. I’m referring to the dreams you dream about your life, your future, your tomorrows. This week, I’m leading an in-depth study on personal and career dreams. The end of another year is near and as we all prepare for 2018, if you’re like me, you’re thinking ahead to how you see your year ahead of you.

In his book, “Put Your Dreams To The Test,” Dr. John C. Maxwell lays out ten questions each of us should ask before we plan our goals for the future.

One of the questions Dr. Maxwell says we should ask ourselves is this. Is the dream I’m dreaming really my dream? In other words, are we allowing ourselves to be influenced by others to the extent that

they are the ones controlling our plans for the future, not us. Don’t let someone else hijack your dream. Own it. Make it yours.

Another question he asks us is, “Am I willing to pay the price for my dream?”

Often, we dream about how we would like things to turn out but if the truth be told we aren’t willing to commit to what needs to be done to see that dream turn into reality.

As you come to the end of this year, I challenge you to dream big. But be willing

to ask of yourself some important questions before you commit to following that dream. It’s one thing to dream. It’s something totally different to doing what’s necessary to turn that dream into reality.

Recently Moskovitz has created a thrift or clearance department within the store. If something does not sell, Moskovitz calls the consigner to return the item. Often, the consigner does not want it back and requests that Moskovitz donate it. Rather than making multiple trips to donation sites, Moskovitz is now marking those item's prices down and donating the funds raised to one of two causes that are close to his heart, an organization helping with the opioid crisis and one for Alzheimer's research.

When my collegiate racing career was over, I would still compete but there was no betting, so I would purchase the regatta T-shirts i.e., Head of the Schuylkill, Head of the Potomac, Head of the Charles Regatta, Navy Day Regatta.

Then, both of my children took up the oar and competed in high school and college regattas. I had to have a T-shirt to commemorate their participation. The dye was cast.

In addition to the regattas, I started buying concert t-shirts, Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, Simon and Garfunkel and so on. For years, my wife and I was in charge of housing swimmers from all over the world for the now defunct “Around the Island Swim.”

I have T-shirts from all of those swims.

These were soon followed by beach patrol shirts, shirts from surf shops around the country and a couple shirts from the private military contractor, Blackwater. Of course, when your family starts buying shirts that say, “The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves” and “Trample the Weak, Hurtle the Dead,” it may be time for a little introspection.

Every so often, I rotate the inventory so eventually I have worn most of them a few times over the course of the year. I have had the suggestion to make them into quilts and

Gluten Free Crab Cake Delights

measuring cup, scoop/ portion out your crab cakes and place a scoop on each shrimp. Place on a cookie sheet that has parchment paper or tin foil lightly brushed with extra virgin olive oil. Season one last time with fresh ground salt and pepper.

11. Bake in toaster oven or convection oven on 425 for 12-15 minutes.

Your crab cakes should turn golden brown and the minced garlic should appear crispy. The shrimp should be bright orange and cooked through.

12. Squeeze fresh lemon juice on top and serve!

Ingredients:

▶16oz. ▶ lump crab meat ▶10-15 ▶ shrimp ▶1/2 ▶ a red bell pepper diced small ▶5 ▶ garlic cloves minced ▶1 ▶ organic egg ▶1/2 ▶ cup light mayo (gluten free) ▶1 ▶ tablespoon organic dijon mustard ▶1 ▶ 1/2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce (gluten free) ▶1 ▶ teaspoon hot sauce (optional) ▶15-20 ▶ gluten free crackers (garlic & herb flavor if available) ▶fresh ▶ ground salt/ pepper ▶lemon ▶ wedge for garnish and to squeeze over crab cakes

Directions:

1. Rinse and drain your lump crab meat. Pat dry with paper towels.

2. Peel and clean shrimp and set aside & refrigerate. Leave tails on.

3. Dice red bell pepper and mince garlic cloves. Set aside 4. In a mixing bowl, whisk egg, mayo, mustard, worcestershire & hot sauce until smooth.

5. Transfer crab meat to a separate mixing bowl and slowly fold in your sauce mixture. You want to add it slowly to prevent the crab mix from

getting too wet.

6. In food processor blend the gluten free crackers until bread crumb texture OR put crackers in a large ziplock bag and crush with a rolling pin.

7. Fold garlic and bell peppers into crab mixture, season with salt & pepper.

8. Add crushed cracker mix. Continue to fold mixture.

9. Refrigerate for an hour.

Ingredients:

2 ripe avocados 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lime juice 1/4 cup diced red onion 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground sea salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper Chips to dip

Halve and pit the avocados then scoop out the flesh into a large bowl.

Holiday Tips to keep your pets safe

ost dog and cat owners are familiar with the foods dangerous for our pets. Chocolate, raisins, grapes, coffee, tea and rich, fatty foods common at parties can cause symptoms including upset tummy, diarrhea, pain, vomiting, dehydration and even death. Along with these we also need to beware of the following: Macadamia Nuts contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscles in dogs.

Alcohol – Every year hundreds of pets die after a single bout of alcohol consumption often in the form of eggnog.

Uncooked yeast dough can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Tobacco products can be fatal to pets if ingested. Keep cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, nicotine gum and patches, ashtrays out of reach.

Meat-soaked strings from roasts and poultry are very enticing

to pets. Ingestion can cause a surgical emergency when the string lodges in the digestive system.

Although you do need to be vigilant, keeping pets away from the kitchen while preparing and cleaning up the holiday feasts and pet-proofing your garbage goes along way in keeping them safe. During partiesinform guest to not feed your pets.

The holidays often bring lots of visitors to your home. Whether you are having a holiday party or just entertaining a few guests, pets can find the situation overwhelming and become anxious or frightened. While you may want to have your furry friends around during the festiv-

New people smells, food everywhere, children playing, music blaring and someone sitting in my favorite sleeping spot could be Fido’s view of the party. Consider your pets when planning holiday get-togethers and plan the most effective, least stressful ways for you and your pet to manage the event.

Consider giving your pet a vacation – a trip to daycare and a night at the local pet resort might be much more fun for Fido than skirting out of the way of party guests and running from playful children all evening. An added bonus is being able to cook, party and clean up without worrying about your pet’s safety.

Keeping feeding, exercise and playtimes consistent during the holidays can reduce stress and avoid problems.

Advise guests of the rules for pets and ask them to please abide by them.

Provide access to a quiet room to which the pet can “escape” to if they feel stressed, anxious or sleepy.

Keep pets in a closed bedroom or a crate during the festivities. This keeps them safe and avoids the possibility of them slipping out as guests arrive.

Never leave dogs and children unsupervised no matter how well behaved.

Having guest bring their pets and introducing new or unfamiliar pets can be stressful enough to your pet without the added holiday activities.

Try to avoid this during the season.

However, if guest are bringing their pet or you are bringing your pet to visit, introduce pets in a neutral location. Be sure to have all pets securely restrained and have treats available to reward positive behaviors and interactions. Never leave newly introduced animals unsupervised.

Home Sweet Home

nyone who has moved away from their childhood home usually holds a special place in their heart for that location. Whether it’s a city, the suburbs or the country - it bears a certain magical quality, even if just in our minds. I suppose it’s because it’s the place where our early memories were made, and we feel rather nostalgic about it.

For me, that special hometown is in upstate New York, nestled in the Adirondacks, on The Great Sacandaga Lake. That place will always be my home no matter where I am currently living. Whenever I visit there, I am taken back to a simpler time and place – a place I feel very protective of because it holds all my precious childhood memories. Memories of catching fireflies in a jar and telling ghost stories on the front porch, while we watched them flash and shimmer. Memories of riding bikes up and down our dead-end street until dark. Memories of building snow forts with my brother and going ice-skating on the lake. I could go on and on.

I was fortunate to have never

moved around like many people I know. Not only did I live in the same town, I even lived in the same house until I left for college.

Unfortunately, my father passed away that year and my mom ended up moving and the house went to my oldest brother who sold it many, many, years later. I was very sad to see it leave the family, but stuff happens. Sometimes you just have to get over it. Before my brother sold the house, I had the opportunity to visit and stay

She is house-broken, knows several basic tricks (sit, down) and loves to go for walks and play fetch and run in the yard! Olive is a very attentive dog, but not so much a lap dog, she has her independence. Olive is fine with humans, but is better suited for older children. She would be an ideal companion for an older single adult or couple. Olive would prefer to be an only pet, as she is not super compatible with other animals and needs a high-fenced yard to run in. Now she had a second chance to get a home. Pearl did get that chance and after two months of working with her daily, she just couldn't get used to being a house cat. She could not bond and hid the entire time. So, Pearl was returned.

At this point, we believe that Pearl may have been an outside cat her entire life. We also think that she has always had a caretaker and is used to being fed. That is where her dependence on humans ends.

This kind lady was never able

Unfortunately, she was relocating out of Ocean City and did not want to leave Pearl behind without a caretaker.

It would take a few weeks before Pearl would finally be caught and brought to the HSOC. Shelter. The staff was surprised to find that Pearl had already been spayed, was in great shape and very friendly. It was surmised that maybe she had been someone's cat and had gotten displaced during the storm.

Lighthouse gets a Jolly Guest

bsecon Lighthouse will light up the holidays on Saturday, December 9th, from noon to 3:30 p.m.

Dec. 9 Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and their Lighthouse Elves will host kids of all ages for holiday souvenir crafts in the museum and a climb to the top to meet Santa Claus. Guests will enjoy the official lighting of our Holiday Tree at 1pm, and have a chance to do some holiday shopping in our charming gift shop. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages 4-12. All proceeds benefit the education programs at Absecon Lighthouse.

Absecon Lighthouse is a stateowned historic property administered by the non-profit Inlet Public/ Private Association. Located at 31 So. Rhode Island Avenue in Atlantic City, it is open to visitors Thursdays through Mondays, 11 am to 4 pm.
