e are down to the final days before the election.

Have you voted yet? I did!

I must admit, I am more than excited for those endless political TV commercials to cease and the all the lawn signs to disappear.

In the pages of our last issue we ran a story about a duplex in Ocean City that has become a drive-by attraction. The two-story building has signs and flags for Trump on the top level and just as many for Biden on the bottom level. The cool part of the story was that the opposing political views of these neighbors did not get in the way of their friendship. Wow! I think we could learn a lot from those neighbors.

Veterans Day is around the corner.

Wednesday, November 11th is a day of tribute to military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans deserve our utmost respect. They fought for and protected our freedoms, including our freedom to vote. I cannot remember a year

of more turmoil and division in America than 2020. But still, we are blessed to be American citizens. All of us. Even with all the political division, we are free to express our opinions which is not something that we should take for granted. In America with hard work and perseverance, our opportunities are greater than anywhere else in the world.

November is upon us with its chilly breezes and fallen leaves on the lawn. For me, November is a time of gratitude. At first glance it may seem that there is little to be thankful for this year but try to look harder.

It may take some work. Always look harder because there is always something to be thankful for -- like the comfort of our homes, each other, and a hot cup of tea. I recently accepted a gratitude challenge. It is a daily journal in which I write down three things I am grateful for each day. It must be something in the present, today, that brought joy.

I am only a week into it but taking a moment to think of those positive things is lifting my spirits. I challenge you to do the same.

Reflections on 2012's Hurricane Sandy and Derecho

E

ight years ago this week, I apprehensively gave my viewers 8 days notice. Sure, I didn’t know the specifics, such as just where the developing tropical low would make landfall or just how high the storm surge will be. But as a meteorologist, I feared it would be a storm that could forever change the shape of parts of the Mid-Atlantic coast. The concern was real, so much so that I proactively canceled a week-long stay at my home in Ocean City and instead chose to cautiously track an ominous swirl south of Jamaica from the confines of the old NBC40 weather center.

That swirl was officially named Tropical Storm Sandy on Monday, October 22, 2012. And exactly one week later,

Sandy made landfall in Brigantine and left an indelible impact on our lives and our coastline.

As a forecaster, it was perhaps one of the most accurate and far out in advance predictions that I can remember. A week’s warning for any storm shows how far the science of weather forecasting has come. Ironically though, it came exactly four months after one of the most under-warned and under-forecasted storms to ever strike South Jersey, the devastating derecho of June 2012.

The midnight mayhem that those 100 mile-per-hour gusts delivered showed how far the inexact science of meteorology still has to go.

It’s a tale of two equally destructive but very different storms. The derecho lasted less than an hour, was all about wind, and focused its fury on the mainland. Meanwhile, Sandy wielded it’s wrath with water, and therefore the barrier islands were ground zero for a days-long pummeling. But the one-two punch that two

of the most potent storms in Mother Nature’s arsenal delivered was a back to back blow the likes of which Atlantic County (thankfully) may never see again in such short succession.

While meteorologists saw Sandy coming for days, effectively communicating the inherent danger proved to be frustratingly challenging. Perhaps the biggest culprit was the perceived lack of impact from Hurricane Irene, just 14 months earlier in August of 2011. Due to the ultimate track and structure of Irene combined with some simple luck, Irene largely spared South Jersey, while areas far to our north (Vermont), west (Pennsylvania), and south (North Carolina and Virginia) fared much worse. Blame human nature for leading many to incorrectly think that if Irene wasn’t as bad as forecast, then Sandy would follow suit. The truth is of course that no two storms are alike. But that didn’t stop more people from riding out Sandy in their homes, and therefore later needing to be rescued.

Part of the fault also lied on a National Hurricane Center (NHC) practice that has since been changed, due to the flaws that Sandy exposed.

Because Sandy was hitting in late October with colder ocean waters off our coast, the storm was correctly expected to transition from a “tropical” hurricane to a “post-tropical” but still powerful storm. In other words, it would lose some tropical characteristics and no longer fit the textbook definition of a hurricane, even though it would still act like one. But because of this technicality, hurricane watches and warnings were never issued for South Jersey.

Granted, the NHC nailed the forecast track and strength of Sandy days in advance. Their products, maps, and breakdown of the impacts were

impeccable. It was about as well forecast of a storm as possible, even by today’s higher standards.

Yet the lack of warnings muddled the overall messaging. Irene struck with hurricane warnings flying, and we were spared.

Sandy made landfall late in the season with colder water and no warnings posted, leading some to think that Sandy would be even more of a dud than Irene. Local meteorologists knew of the developing misconception and preached hard and long to dispel it.

But human nature is a formidable opponent. And as a result, watches and warnings will now be issued in any similar setup going forward.

Sure enough, Sandy did indeed become “post-tropical” one hour before it made landfall in Atlantic County at 8pm on Monday, October 29th.

For all intents and purposes, it was a landfalling hurricane along the Jersey shore. But it’s not listed in the record books as one. Nor is Irene for that matter, as it made a (second) landfall as a tropical storm near Little Egg Inlet in 2011. The March of 1962 storm wasn’t a hurricane but a nor’easter.

And the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 never made a landfall, instead staying just off the coast. So what was the last official New Jersey hurricane landfall? You actually have to go back more than 100 years ago, to an unnamed Category 2 hurricane in September of 1903 that made landfall in South Jersey.

In the 8 years since Sandy, we’ve learned a lot. Meteorologists strive to continue to improve not only forecasts, but even more importantly, the effective communication of that forecast. All the while, we hope that it's another 100 years before we have to wrestle with either a hurricane or a derecho once again.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Goat Yoga is Good for the Soul

o, this weekend I tried something new. Honestly, I was just excited to do anything at all.

Goat Yoga: it’s one of those things that sounds like a joke, but I assure you it’s very real and quite fun. The idea is pretty simple. A yoga teacher, in this case, Naida Burgess, leads a very light yoga class while kids (baby goats) and chickens play and interact with you.

I am not very good at yoga, but like Naida said, “if you can breathe, you can do this” and she was right.

It was more goat than yoga for sure.

And it did some amazing things for my soul. It put me in the moment and put things in perspective.

I feel I’ve become quite close to my readers as I share the embarrassing tales of my life with you all, so I can be honest in saying I wasn’t having a very good day at all. To be honest, the last thing I wanted to do was anything. I heard that that’s when you’re supposed to do something the most

though, so I reluctantly got out of the car and walked through the Namaste gate. Then everything changed. I was thrust into the moment. It was special, serene, quiet, and necessary.

We went to the Angels in the Pines Goat Farm, LLC in Egg Harbor City.

They usually have cooking classes, farm parties, art with goats, and more, but (and I can’t stress enough how tired I am of saying and writing this) due to COVID they’ve had to drastically cut their activities this year for the safety of people and goats alike.

With about a dozen other socially distanced souls and what seemed to be at least 20 goats, we began with a sun salutation and saying hello to our goat friends who were guided in this case by two trainers to help the goats interact with students in specific poses. In this case, that means the trainers are there, throwing goat food on and around you and your mat while you’re trying to do yoga. I was already admittedly not good at yoga, so this made it even more fun for me, especially being a person who doesn’t love doing things I’m not good at.

There were a couple of times when 2 goats were on my back, and another 10 were just hovering around me. I can say I didn’t do most of the

poses. I tried, but the darn kids were far more enter taining than seeing if I could balance on one foot (which I couldn’t). My boyfriend on the other hand almost kept his balance on one foot even with the addition of 10 kids in his way.

Again, one day I aspire to have the balance he has, but I digress.

Unfortunately, I found out about goat yoga late in the game, but there are still two weeks left so it’s not too late for you! If you are feeling anxious about the world, uneasy about work, or just need something new, I urge you to not let this opportunity fly

Memorials to Visit Wildwoods’ Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Wall, the only permanent Vietnam Memorial replica in the Northeast, is an exact, half-size, black granite replica of the official Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It has the 58,913 names of our country’s fallen heroes from the Vietnam War etched on its panels and stretches for 240 feet. It is located at Fox Park adjacent to the Wildwoods Convention Center at 4500 Ocean Drive.

The New Jersey Korean War Veterans Memorial was created to ensure that future generations remember and honor those who served, the legacy they continued, and the freedom they preserved. Located on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at Park Place.

The World War II Lookout Tower is New Jersey’s last remaining restorable World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system that played a major part in coastal defenses. Built in 1942, the tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery. It is located on the Delaware Bay on Sunset Blvd. in Cape May. The World War I Memorial was modeled after a Greek Temple and measures 124 feet in diameter and consists of 16 large Doric columns. Veteran's Clinic Opening Soon In Cape May County

he Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders are bringing enhanced and more accessible medical services to Veterans in Cape May County.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is in the final stage of opening its new location for the Cape May VA Outpatient Clinic.

It is anticipated to open in December 2020 and is located in the County Commons complex in Rio Grande. The new clinic will be more centrally located in Cape May County to provide services closer to Veterans’ homes. Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton and Freeholder Jeff Pierson worked with then Congressman Frank LoBiondo to push the VA for the expanded access. It has been a vision that Thornton and LoBiondo have been working on for over three decades.

During his time in office, LoBiondo worked extensively to expand Veteran’s access to health care in Cape May, Atlantic, and Cumberland counties. “This new VA clinic is going to

be a real asset to the Veterans’ in our County,” said Thornton. “I want to thank our former Congressman Frank LoBiondo for working so hard for Cape May County and for the VA to listen to the needs of our Veterans.” The new clinic will be double

the size of the current one, which is located at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. New services that will be available include a host of expended services, including telehealth capabilities, hearing aid maintenance and repair, prescription

drug benefits, physical therapy, and optometry services.“We appreciate the cooperation of the VA to get this facility open in 2020 despite COVID-19,” said Pierson.

“This will be a great facility to provide expanded services for our men and women who served.”The Clinic was supposed to open in June but got pushed back due to the pandemic. Cape May County’s County Counsel Jeff Lindsay made the recommendation to the Freeholder Board when the County purchased what is now known as County Commons that it would be an ideal fit for the clinic. The idea was presented to the VA and they agreed to move forward. “On behalf of Township Committee and the many veterans that reside in Middle Township, I want to thank the VA and the Freeholder Board for bringing this state-of-art clinic to Rio Grande,” Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue said. “This vital facility will bring the quality healthcare our Cape May County veterans deserve much closer to home. It’s great to see this vision become a reality.”

Shore Medical Center to Celebrate Veterans Day with 5th Consecutive Flag Planting Tribute

or the last four years, the team at Shore Medical Center has honored our Veterans by planting more than 1,200 flags in its park along Bay Avenue.

Shore is once again continuing this tradition and inviting the community to be a part of this tribute. Community members can submit the name and military branch of family or friends who have served our country, and these veterans will be honored with a flag.

“While we cannot safely gather in person for a ceremony this year, we will proudly show our support for our veterans with a powerful flag display,” says Fred Banner Shore’s Chief Information Officer. “This is an opportunity for the community to symbolically come together to thank and honor those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom.”

Weight Loss and Coffee Creamers Nutrition

t's the start of the day! You’re oh so cozy in bed, when all of a sudden, that piercing and horribly annoying alarm goes off. As you stumble to hit snooze, you yell , “ Nooooo!"

You throw the blankets to the side and walk like a zombie straight to your coffee machine as if your waking life depended on it.

As a nutrition professional 24 years , who’s obsessed with learning the health benefits of what we consume, I had to brew up the best coffee creamers for health and weight loss. My clients love their coffee and making the biggest change is getting rid of those high sugary coffee creamers. It will shut down your weight loss no matter how vigilant you are with your overall dietary changes. I best have some answers for them!

If your goal is weight loss, then your coffee creamer should not contain trans fats, artificial chemicals, excessive sugar, or fillers such as carrageenan.

Cof fee it self is full of health-boosting chemicals and qualities. But what you pour into it can quickly cancel out these helpers. It can also wreak havoc on a healthy weight loss plan.

The problem with many coffee creamers is that most of them aren’t even made with cream. Instead, they get that rich and creamy texture from thickening ingredients and emulsifiers such as carrageenan.

There has been controversy around carrageenan. Some evidence suggests that it triggers inflammation and damages your digestive system. Since research is inconclusive, it's best to either minimize or avoid it.

When eaten in moderation ( and everyone has a different definition of moderation) , and as a part of a healthy diet, a bit of natural sugar is fine. But problems occur when you consume too much added sugar, such as the type in sweetened coffee creamers. Excess sugar not only has an impact on weight gain, obesity, and diabetes, it's also is associated with a greater risk of dying from heart disease.

than 150 calories (about 9 tsp) of added sugar per day and 100 calories (about 6 tsp) for women, per day.

Many people think that choosing “sugar free” varieties, don’t understand that artificial sweeteners may cause weight gain, changes in the natural balance of gut bacteria, and even increase the risk for type 2 diabetes. They are shutting down weight loss as much as regular sugar will. There are also concerns that they reinforce the sweet taste, potentially leading to more intense and more often cravings for sugar. I feel it’s best to moderate or minimize consumption of them.

The small classic cups of creamer found on dinner tables, last about 9 months while those powdered versions will last for up to 24 months at room temperature! This is due to heat treatment and unhealthy partially hydrogenated oils. When oils are hydrogenated, hydrogen molecules are added to change the texture and extend the shelf life of the product (how long until it goes bad).

Here are my picks for best coffee creamers.

In moderation half and half half is whole milk and half heavy cream. It’s high in calories and fat, but it comes from very natural sources.

Since some fat in your diet can be satiating -- keeping you full for longer -- it may help prevent future cravings.

Milk is one of the best options you can add to your coffee. It has a balance of macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbs) and contains many vitamins and minerals.

Milk can be considered the perfect muscle building drink. It supports muscle growth and replen-

ishes depleted glycogen stores after intense exercise.

Oat milk is made from rapeseed (a bright-yellow flowering member of the mustard or cabbage family) and oats. It contains heart-healthy beta-glucans with no added sugar.

Oat milk products are all plantbased, sustainable, and contain no GMO. It comes in lightly sweetened and nonsweetened versions. These plant-based products are made from cashew, almond and coconut replacement. They’re vegan, dairyfree, and low in calories.

Clams to the rescue

OC project will recruit local students to grow shellfish that will help protect bay islands from erosion

The tiny shellfish have a big job ahead of them.

They will grow in the device, known as a shellfish upweller, under the watchful eyes of local students, until they are large enough to be placed along back bay islands, helping protect them from erosion as well as cleaning the Doug Bergen

waters of the bay.

“These work to armor shorelines,” Dix said at a Friday event to cut the ribbon on the upweller. Dix is the director of environmental services for the engineering firm, which works closely with Ocean City on a number of projects.

One of those projects was the reconstruction of Shooting Island, a marshy island in the back bay off Ten-

Dix said that could be used for the clams, but they may do just as well gathering their own food from the water.

“These shouldn’t need feeding, but you could,” she said.

At the start of the event, city community services director Michael Allegretto said Ocean City relies on its three Bs, the beach, the boardwalk and the bay.

Dix said the Shooting Island project led to the upweller. The island is about 150 acres. She said it helps protect the city from floods.

“Our bay islands are speed bumps,” she said, helping protect against waves. “But only as long as these islands are still here, and they’re not lost to erosion and sea level rise.”

Since the 1930s, she said, back bay islands have reduced in size by more than 400 acres, based on estimates from historic photographs.

The reconstruction of Shooting Island was completed in 2019, including a rock wall along the west side of the island and habitat for invertebrates like the baby clams along the south.

She hoped local volunteers would help in its maintenance. She also thanked the city public works crew that set up the device, connecting it to power and set up the system to bring the bay water through.

Pomatto and science teacher Keith Zammit were on hand for the Friday event, along with several stu-

dents who got to take a close look at the device. Students from AP Environmental Science, Advanced Oceanography and the Marine Science Club at the high school will participate in the project.

Zammit said the project could have extensive opportunities for students, including in chemistry classes, biology and more. Students can learn about the ecosystem of the bay, the impact of runoff from lawn fertilizers and other sources and how the bay islands interact with the species that live in the back bays.

Pamatto described it as an amazing project that he hopes will spred throughout the Eastern Seaboard.

Ideas For The 2020 Holiday Season Mom's Vibe

t’s hard to believe that the holiday season is right around the corner. With Halloween creeping up, we will all blink before we are planning Christmas dinners, lighting Menorahs,and making New Year’s Eve plans. Though, after the year we’ve had, we should be allowed a preview of 2021 before we celebrate it.

2020 has been such a wild ride for all of us, nothing seems normal anymore. So much has changed since March including how we gather with our families, how our children are educated, and that awkward moment when you see someone you love and ask them if they want to hug or not.

With so much change entering this holiday season, many moms have been looking for ways to maintain some normalcy for our families. The

gatherings may be smaller, the hugs may be fewer, but the love is greater.

As the leader of our packs, we have a unique opportunity this year. As we strive to maintain traditions and expectations for the holiday season, it's also an opportunity to create new traditions and teach valuable life lessons. What could be more "2020" than some changes to the norm?

Here are a few 2020 healthy holiday ideas: Easter Egg Halloween If you're not feeling confident about Trick-or-treat this year, consider combining holiday ideas with a Halloween candy hunt in your backyard or living room. Depending on your level of comfort, invite a few neighborhood friends to keep the community feel of Halloween alive.

Kids will still get their annual sugar high in their costumes and you can feel confident about Covid exposure.

Early Thanksgiving Many families, especially those with high risk family members, are moving their holiday dates around.

Instead of waiting until the end of November, they're picking a warmer weekend in October or early November for an outdoors (or open air) Thanksgiving celebration with their families. Any day is a beautiful day to give thanks and celebrate with loved ones.

Elf On The Shelf This one depends on your tolerance for the Christmas-time house guest. If you do not have the mental capacity this year, the internet is booming with ideas about the elf needing a 14-day quarantine of catching Covid and therefore being delayed.

On the other hand, if you feel like keeping a tradition intact this year, the elf doesn't is always have to be mischievous. I find the elf to be a unique way to teach life lessons to kids. In years past, I have used the elf to teach my kids about kindness, the importance of reading, and the gift of family. This year, I'll be using Snowflake to teach empathy, the beauty in change, and other 2020 life lessons.

I may even let her come early for the sake of keeping holiday spirits high when so much has changed.

Driving for lights If this isn't already a holiday tradition, consider making it one. Our annual drive around town to enjoy the Christmas lights is a family favorite.

It's quality family time in a safe, socially distant fashion.

Give More This year has felt like so much was taken away, some families more than others. With so many families in need this holiday season and so much negativity in the air, my deepest hope is that this holiday season will bring about more giving, more loving, and more kindness. There is no greater time than the holidays to teach our children about the joy of giving.

Whether you donate food to a food bank, donate time or resources,

or pick up a few extra gifts for a family in need this year, sharing the love is the best gift of all. When we give, we are reminded of how abundant our lives can be, even when it doesn't always feel like it.

Zoom Into The Holidays Virtual happy hours seem to be a thing of the past.

Those short lived gatherings were a creative way for coworkers and family members to stay connected as the Covid pandemic was unfolding before us.

This holiday season, if you can't be physically together, let's give thanks for the blessing that technology offers us.

Create new ways of connecting through Zoom whether it is virtual games, conversation topics, or just hanging out together, you may find that you connect with loved ones in new and beautiful ways when the environment is different. Stay open minded!

Connect Deeper This year, you may not be packing 30 people into your home for a holiday meal but that doesn't mean that the love and connection has to disappear. Smaller, more intimate gatherings allow for deeper connection to those closest to you. Whether it's just your household or your immediate family, don't miss this opportunity to dive deeper with the ones you love.

Smaller gatherings may give way to more meaningful conversations if you're present and open to what is available to you. Appreciate the intimacy this year.

Most of all, remember why you celebrate each holiday. Keep in mind that when change occurs, even though it feels foreign, it is also an opportunity to learn and teach valuable life lessons.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, stay healthy, stay safe, stay kind.

husband to sickness as a mother with a beautiful young daughter, Esther reminded me how blessed I was to have my husband by my side. The difference in our ages never mattered in our friendship; she had experienced the good, bad, and ugly of the years, and would share nuggets of wisdom that she had learned along the way.

It reminds me of the Bible verse that talks about the older women teaching the younger. We shared a love for New Dawn roses, the wall on her property with climbing roses, and old gardening books. We also shared a love for cooking and baking, and

Esther was often known as “the lady who bakes”. She taught me about caring for people. Often, she couldn’t talk the night before a doctor’s appointment or visit from the landscaper, because she was too busy baking cookies to give to them. She would spend days preparing for a yearly event at the Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO), baking a table full of goodies for the staff to enjoy, including naturalist and author Peter Dunne, the Director of CMBO at the time. My family often benefited from leftover baked goods and bottles of ginger ale she had prepared for workers coming to her house. She once asked my older son to dig some holes for her. I was upset that New Dawn roses and catmint from Esther’s garden to mine. she insisted on paying him, and he said, “I would have done it just for our May birthdays and she would the cookies and lemonade!” Everyoften share her garden with me. I love my pure white Meidiland roses from her, combined with the lavender-blue flowers of catmint (nepeta). Some of the most unusual plants we shared were the evening primroses. They look a bit haggard by day but like Cinderella, transform in the evening and unfurl their petals to reveal stunning yellow flowers with an enticing scent.

True to her thoughtful and giving nature, in her final days Esther made sure that a mutual friend and I had something special to remember her by. We both received a Colette rose to plant in our own gardens in her memory and honor.

This spring will bring a bittersweet sight when its fragrant soft pink flowers bloom in May. Goodbye, my dear friend, thank you for sharing your garden and life with me. I can’t imagine the amazing gardens you must be cultivating in Heaven. Until we meet again...

s it just me, or does it seem like the Fall is racing by? Of course, most of us can’t wait for 2020 to be over and are hoping for better things in 2021, right?

Since I last wrote, the Eagles almost rallied to beat a quality opponent at home, and then actually did win on “Thursday Night Football” against the Giants. The Sixers have shaken up their front office staff. An interesting name has popped up as a potential Phillies GM, but he might want more control than is available at this point. Finally, the Flyers might have a new kind of retro jersey next season. Plus, a former Flyers announcer turned NHL Hall of Famer is hanging up his headset.

From the entertainment world, I finished a program on Amazon Prime that I first told you about in my last column. I also got experience

I’ll start with the Eagles as they couldn’t have looked worse against the Baltimore Ravens at home on October 18th. Down 17zip at the half, they rallied to get all the way back to a two-point

deficit, but then lost when their two-point try was unsuccessful.

Carson Wentz in particular looked sharp in the 4th quarter, leading many Eagles fans to ask, “why can’t he play like that ALL the time?”

That comeback game came at a cost though, as both Zach Ertz and Miles Sanders left the game with injury and did not play against the Giants. Up 10-7 at the half, things looked really bad for the Birds when the Giants took a 21-10 lead early in the 4th quarter.

In fact, the Eagles were down 11 with just over five minutes to play, before Carson Wentz again, came to the rescue. Wentz found Greg Ward to make it a 21-16 margin, and then later hit Boston Scott with a perfect pass to make it 2221 Eagles. The Birds two-point try failed, but thankfully they held on to win by one.

Nothing the Cowboys did in an uninspiring 25-3 loss to the Washington Football Team indicates that Dallas will have success in South Philadelphia on Sunday night. The Cowboys finished with 142 total net yards in the loss to Washington. Their fewest net yards in a game since 2001!

The Sixers have made some front office moves as they have hired Peter Dinwiddie to be the Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and Prosper Karangwa to serve Jack Scheuer as the Vice President of Player Personnel. Ned Cohen will remain as assistant general manager. Both these moves come as the Sixers face a lot of important issues before the yet-to-be determined free agency period.

They’re in the process of reshuffling their front office, making assistant coaching hires, evaluating draft prospects, looking for trade possibilities and affordable freeagent targets. Here’s hoping the two new guys bring success with them to Philadelphia.

I saw a social media post the other day where Bryce Harper and his wife were out to dinner in Las Vegas with JT Realmuto and his wife. The Phillies are going to face a lot of competition in free agency for the catcher, as I wrote about last time. We already know where Harper sits on this one, and can you really afford to tick off your star player?

The big Phillies news is about the GM position, where there are reports that Dave Dombrowski

is interested in the job, but only if he assumes full control. This is GREAT news I think, since Dombrowski presided over World Series Championship teams in Miami and Boston. However, the question now becomes, what do you do with Andy MacPhail, as he has one year left on his contract.

Let me go on the record here as saying I’d be a big fan of Dave Dombrowski joining the Phillies at some point. He’s currently part of a group trying to bring a MLB team to Nashville, so perhaps the Phillies can roll the dice and wait a year with Ned Rice as the interim GM. Finally, we close with the Flyers where their big news in the last two weeks was an internet leak of what their new retro jersey might look like next season. The Flyers jerseys (pictured) hearken back to what the club wore in the 1990s, but come with color reversals that fit the bill of a “Reverse Retro� initiative that league uniform provider Adidas has been rumored to be working on. For the Flyers, that appears to mean a modern-day edition of the orange road design they wore from 1982-2001, except the black and white on the jersey are swapped.

One other major piece of hockey news that must be addressed is the retirement of Mike “Doc” Emrick. Emrick, whose roots run deep with the Flyers, was the voice of the sport. From Olympics to Stanley Cups to Sunday afternoon games in March, Emrick’s unique style often turned a violent game into a ballet of 6-foot men weighing 200 pounds. I particularly will miss his unlimited use of creative verbs to describe the action. He’d say things like “shuttles the puck ahead, ladles it ahead, pitchforks it ahead”.

Emrick, 74, has been involved in hockey since 1970, starting out as a volunteer sports writer covering the Penguins for the Beaver County Times just to get his foot in the door. He moved into broadcasting in 1973 with the Port Huron Flags of the IHL. His first NHL job was with the Flyers from 1980 to ‘83. He had another stint with them from 1988 to ’93 and was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, the same year as Flyers founder Ed Snider. I’m lucky enough to have met “Doc” a few times and was smart enough to ask him to pose for a picture a few years back. “Doc”, you will be sorely missed!

Which leads me to another fine gentleman that we lost from the Philadelphia Sports scene as longtime Associated Press writer Jack Scheurer passed away on October 16th at the age of 88.

Mike Jensen in the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote this in a tribute column: The ghosts of the Palestra are having a party, or more likely a pickup game. Jack Scheuer’s local legacy stretches as long as Broad Street north to south and Market Street east and west, to the press room and press rows at the Palestra and Temple’s Liacouras Center and the Wells Fargo Center, to the Phillies press box. In those spots, one or two people got lucky each game, and knew it. They got to sit next to Jack Scheuer. He’d reel you in with trivia questions, parceled out usually a game at a time, but a favorite one involved himself. Who is the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Palestra? The answer was….Jack Scheurer. I was one of those lucky ones to first meet him at Temple when I was a college student from 1989-1993 and got to see him on a semiregular basis for the next 30 years. What a great man who will be missed!

On the local front, I’m still trying to get out and see Holy Spirit running back Patrick Smith play in person. I do know that he’s already over 1,000 yards for the season in just four games. Smith, a Colorado State recruit, helped make it an easy night for the Spartans as they roughed up Pleasantville 42-20 at Ed Byrnes Stadium.

Ocean City is also unbeaten at 4-0 with St. Joseph, St. Augustine and Hammonton each with only one loss so far. I definitely need to get out and catch some “Friday Night Lights” action soon!

I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I did finish watching the first two seasons of “The Boys” on Amazon Prime. As I wrote in my last column, this is not your family friendly superhero series for sure…! I found it to be entertaining, but not to the point where if I missed an episode, I would be crushed. If you like that genre, give it a try and I’d be curious to hear what you think.

Finally, with not that much original programming out right now, the traditional networks are looking for content to fill their schedule.

On CBS, they’ve taken to running a “CBS Sunday Night Movie” this Fall. Well, the other night, the movie was “Scream” from 1996. I won’t spoil anything in case you haven’t seen it, but it’s a wonderful film by Wes Craven that combines black comedy and "whodunit" mystery with the violence of the slasher genre to satirize the clichés of the horror movie genre popularized in films such as Halloween (1978),

Friday the 13th (1980) and Craven's own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Scream was considered unique at the time of its release for featuring characters who were aware of real-world horror films and openly discussed the clichés

that the film attempted to subvert.

A History of Stockton's Lake Fred

akes are on the list of the most magnificent and treasured of earth’s resources.

These pristine bodies of water offer beautiful scenery with walking trails, providing a perfect place to cool off, or just relax. Atlantic and Cape May County each have roughly a dozen lakes. There are a few lesser known lakes that are on the “obscure” list. Lake Fred is one of them.

Situated within the campus of Stockton University in Pomona, you’ll find Lake Fred. This picturesque lake offers plenty of opportunity for students and guests to enjoy the surrounding landscape, with its 1.3 mile trail for walkers and runners. It is an easy path with its magnificent backdrop and a great view for sunsets.

It is also home to the appropriately named “Lake Fred Radio,” a college radio station named after the campus landmark, found at 91.7 FM on the dial.

How old is Lake Fred? The ear-

liest documented history of the manmade body of water can be traced back to the early 19th century. Hanging inside the walls of the Stockton Library Reference Room, you will find a full size map published by F.W. Beers in 1872.

While very few documents reference the lakes previous history, it is believed that the lake was created sometime between the 1860s and early 1870s.

Over fifty years after New Jersey’s cranberry industry had developed, the Pomona Fruit Company, headed

by Andrew Jackson Rider and George E. Gossler, acquired the land in 1900, utilizing Lake Fred for cranberry production.

During that time, cranberry farming was one of the most profitable occupations along the east coast. A.J. Rider, known as the “Cranberry King of New Jersey,” had bought hundreds of acres of bogs throughout the Garden State, and introduced a production plant in England.

By the 1920s, the cranberry industry had lost popularity.

After the death of A.J. Rider in 1929, the farm was sold and purchased by Gossler, who built several bogs in Port Republic. The land stayed under the care of Gossler’s family through 1954, when the Sawmill Corporation acquired the land and converted the bogs back into lakes.

By 1957, log cabins were constructed along the northern shore of the lake and were used as office buildings, and in 1971, Stockton State College (now Stockton University) moved

onto the land.

In the early 1970s, many students referred to the body of water as “College Lake” or “Lake Stockton,” although it never had an official name at that time. It is believed that the lake was named after Fred Summers, later known as “Eric,” an art student who spent much of his time around the lake. His art was prominently featured in early issues of Stockton’s school newspaper.

There is no denying that Lake Fred is a true part of Stockton University’s identity. Whether you are a student returning from class, a professor walking back to their car, or a South Jersey native itching to explore nature, Fred brings you back to reality.

Exercise for mental health

et’s face it, these times are tough. Now with the weather changing and daylight savings upon us, some of us will start to get the winter blues. For some, it’s so much more than that.

Depression has been on the rise with all these changes we’ve been faced with over the last 8 months.

Exercise can possibly help. It may not be the only form of treatment, but it works well for some people. Aerobic exercises, including jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, and dancing, have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression.

Exercising starts a biological chain of events that results in many health benefits, that we already know such as protecting against heart disease and diabetes, improving sleep, and lowering

blood pressure. Physical fitness helps mental fitness and can reduce stress. It is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function. Exercise can be especially helpful when stress has depleted your energy or ability to concentrate.

When stress affects the brain, the rest of the body feels the impact as well. If your body feels better, so does your mind. High -intensity exercise releases endorphins (the body's feel-good chemicals), resulting in that “runner's high.” For most others, the real value is in low-intensity exercise sustained over time.

Consistent activity releases proteins that cause nerve cells to grow and make new connections.

The improvement in brain function makes you feel better. Exercise supports nerve cell growth in the brain improving nerve cell connections, which helps relieve depression. Getting up and moving

just a little bit will help. Start with five minutes a day of walking or any activity you enjoy. Soon, five minutes of activity will become ten. Then ten will become fifteen. You should begin to feel better a few weeks after you begin exercising. This is a long-term treatment, not a one time fix. Pick something you can sustain over time.

You must find what clicks for you.

The key is to make it something you enjoy and look forward to. It must be something that you'll want to keep doing. I love a variety of workouts, but my favorite is strength training. It makes me feel strong. Spin or indoor cycling is a close second because that sweat is unmatched and the whole vibe of a dark room with cool music just gets me going. I love teaching it!

Structured group exercise classes

can be effective for individuals who are lacking in social interaction. Some are lonely or isolated and need this type of interaction with others. It’s like an extended family for so many. I see it all the time with my ladies and gentlemen in my water aerobics classes. They may have lost their spouse and need this type of support.

They take it beyond the class and go to lunch, concerts, and movies together.

Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood. It improves self-esteem and cognitive function. I can’t stress enough the importance of exercise for every facet of your life.

There will be plenty of days when you don’t feel like doing it, but I promise you that you will feel so much better mentally and physically if you just go for it!

Meet Local Singer and A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings Songwriter Nancy Malcun Memories with Mike

ina: Do you write all your own music and lyrics?

Nancy: I do. Yes. Dina: You do! How long have you been writing music and lyrics?

Nancy: The first song I remember writing was when I was nine. I remember my cousin and my sister, who are both younger than me, we were all at my grandma's house and we were bored so we decided to start a band.

Dina: That's awesome. That's so cute.

And were you the leader of the band?

Nancy: I was!

Dina: As well as having a beautiful singing voice do you play any instruments?

Nancy: I do, I play guitar. That's really the only instrument I can say confidently that I can play. I started out with piano when I was younger, but it was by ear pretty much.

Dina: So, you've been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the winner of the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the Bands. What was this experience like for you and how has this helped your career?

Nancy: I was, I remember being so nervous. That was right at the beginning of when I started playing out live.

I think it might've been 2014. I can't remember exactly. But I remember being really, really nervous. I did not expect to win at all. I was up against actual like five piece, four piece bands.

Here's me with my little guitar playing, you know, singer songwriter stuff. But it was a great experience. I got to meet some cool people, some people who were judges at that competition and we still communicate to this day, so I feel very fortunate.

Dina: I read somewhere that you love everything paranormal. And I had to ask you this question, have you ever had a paranormal experience yourself?

Nancy: I have had quite a few.

Yes. And I think that might be where that comes from too, that interest in it, just because it's so unknown. And

you know, if it happens to you, it kind of takes you by surprise. But I think one paranormal experience that I can say that I've had is this is going to be really strange, but my cousin and my sister and I would play the Ouija board sometimes. And apparently, you're supposed to close the Ouija board out and say goodbye. And we didn't because my dad came up the stairs and said, dinner's ready and kind of scared us, like ‘muahahah’! We didn’t close the board out and things would happen in my house. I would hear whispering, I would hear things walking on our floor at night. My dog would stare at the wall and start barking at like two o'clock in the morning. Just like little things like that I would go through.

Dina: Does your father still have that same home?

Nancy: Yeah, they do.

Dina: And has the activity subsided or, or is it still active?

Nancy: There's been times where whatever it is likes to play with the lights.

And I honestly feel like, and this was after my grandmother passed recently, my parents think that she would play with the light switches in our house. So that's been going on, but yeah.

Dina: Interesting. Interesting. So, what current projects are you working on?

Nancy: I am in the process of recording my album. This is going to be my third one, home recorded pretty much. I did go over to my friend's studio recently. His name is Michael Luna and he's going to be working with me on one song. I recorded it over there, but they're still working on it, so I haven't heard it yet, but I'm just in the process of recording and hopefully I can get something out by December. But I'm kind of crossing my fingers on that one.

Senior Moments by Charles P. Eberson

F

or me to say Mike was my friend seems a bit generous on my part. We only socialized with our wives a handful of times over the years. I haven’t seen nor spoken to Mike in about three years even though he lived in the area. Everybody is busy and tend to put such things on the back burner. I was simply waiting for COVID to be over.

Mike couldn’t wait. He passed away last week. Even though we didn’t socialize as much as goods friends do, we had a bond which transcended that gap.

Mike’s accomplishments and contributions could have filled up three of my columns but to me, he was my doubles rowing partner for years.

Together we endured the crucible of pain and oxygen deprivation at rowing regattas in Washington D.C., Delaware, Philadelphia as well as local events. It was through those events that our friendship was forged.

Even before Mike’s passing, I would tell and retell stories of our rowing experiences. A favorite one that often comes to mind is when Mike and I won a gold medal in the doubles event and then had to race each other as well as other rowers in a singles event. As we sat at the start, Mike was in the lane next to me. Mike was a fierce competitor and trained hard on an ergometer practically every day. He had legs like tree trunks and mine, well, they were more like a flamingo’s. I knew that I was quick out of the start so my strategy was to

get far enough ahead of Mike in the hopes that I could make the finish line 1500 meters away before Mike could catch me. As I predicted, I jumped out to a fast start and was a few boat lengths ahead which I was trying desperately to hold but slowly, inexorably Mike began to close. I decided to use a little gamesmanship and edged over toward him resulting in Mike hitting a lane marker with his oar. As Mike fought to regain his rhythm, I pulled harder temporarily maintaining my lead. Mike closed the gap again. I moved towards him again. Same result. Mike yelled for me to watch my course. I repeated my move. Mike repeated his yell, clearly becoming more agitated. I decided to maintain whatever shred of sportsmanship I had left and gave Mike the space he needed to finally overtake me and win the race.

It wasn’t until years later at his Christmas party that I broke my silence and confessed my racing

strategy to Mike. To my surprise, Mike became just as angry as if it happened that very morning, which of course, me being me, thought that made it even more humorous.

Mike and I shared many racing and training experiences and it is those experiences that keep what I have always considered a friendship alive.

Mike’s racing single scull however, is still plying the same waters on which he logged hundreds of miles. The last time we spoke was when I bought his single scull and it is now being rowed and raced by my son in Mike’s stead.

The Arts Are Back In Atlantic City Part 2 The Light with Raymond Tyler

n March of 2020 everything in Atlantic City closed down for fear of Covid-19.

Artists in Atlantic City and South Jersey continued to create. In fact, with Zoom new platforms were created that have connected artists from state to state.

The hub for the arts in Atlantic City is The Atlantic City Arts Garage, and they have reopened their doors to the public. Once again lovers of art can stroll the garage and experience a wide range of exciting expressions in painting, sculpture and more!

The facility officially titled The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University is welcoming guests and holding in person classes. Executive Director Michael Cagno explained. “We are open to the public following socially distant protocols and mask enforcement. This fall we opened three new exhibitions: Noyes Artist Members, solo exhibit by Syd Krochmalny and solo exhibit by Drew Griffiths. Our Saturday free art classes for the children of Atlantic City continue into November. “ Artists and community members can also take comfort in the reopening of The Atlantic City Public Library. The physical library, like all public spaces, requires masks and social distancing. Their hours currently are 10am to noon and then 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The library is closed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

While it may be hard to get to the library when they are open for physical visits. The Atlantic City Free Public Library has also

made advances in digital availability and for some services they even offer curbside service. The Atlantic City Free Public Library is also offering book and film club activities via Zoom. For a detailed list of current in person and digital services please visit www.ACFPL. org.

Black Poetry Matters As the arts comes back online and becomes more available. I am happy to be a co-curator of Black Poetry Matters. Twice a month Paige Vaccaro of Communities Revolutionizing Open Public Spaces and I curate an online poetry reading called Black Poetry Matters.

Vaccaro and I both wanted to provide a safe space for people to protest through art and poetry. Since we started back in June our community has grown. We started it as a one time event and are now curating it twice a month. Our next show will be Sunday, November 1st , 2020 on Facebook at The

Ocean City man publishes memoir

ete Zakroff of Ocean City, recently published a memoir titled "101 Tales of a Middle-Class Middle-Child." It is a humorous, lesson-filled glimpse at his adventures and life-changing experiences.

The book begins with his experiences growing up in Philadelphia. That is followed by stories of bringing his kids to Ocean City during the 70s and to most recently, becoming a year round resident of Ocean City since 2001.

Zakroff has been writing since the age of seven. During his half-century career as a writer, producer, and instructional designer, he has authored articles and programs about a wide variety of subjects. Zakroff began his career writing a number of “how-to” articles for various magazines. Most of his initial work was for relatively small, specialized audiences in business, industry, labor and education. He wrote awareness and sales presentations, as

well as training programs and tributes.

Later, Zakroff focused on designing creative, interactive workshops and e-learning programs for high-tech and pharmaceutical companies. In total, he has written over 1000 presentations and became a pseudo expert on a wide range of subjects for a short period of time.

Still driven to write, Pete has compiled more than 101 vignettes into seven chapters describing his journey from childhood to retirement.

The book is a blend of humor, nostalgia and practicality where every reader can discover a little of life’s wisdom. It is a welcomed respite from the heaviness of 2020.

by Zakroff's daughter, Laura Tempest Zakroff, who is also a published author.

Collecting Peace Dollars

ilver dollars featuring the design

by Charles Morgan were struck continually from 1878 until 1904 when production ceased due to an abundance of coins residing in government vaults and no demand for them to be released to the public for use in commerce. As a result the government had no need to purchase additional silver, causing a hardship amongst silver mine owners. To help the mine owners, Senator Pittman from Nevada (where most of the mines were located), helped enact a federal law that went in effect in 1918 authorizing the converting to bullion 350 million silver dollars by melting and refining the coins, and selling the bulk to Great Britain at $1 per ounce. The small amount remaining was to be used for minting minor silver coins. The act also authorized the purchase of enough silver to replace the melted silver dollars at the rate of $1 per ounce which was over the market price of silver, thereby providing a government subsidy to the mine owners.

Silver was purchased and by 1921 all three mints, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco were prepared to resume minting silver dollars using the Morgan design, resulting in the highest mintage figure in one year, over 80 million coins total from all 3 mints.

In conjunction with this activity, there was an effort under way to strike a commemorative coin celebrating the successful end of World War I. A new design for a silver dollar was proposed featuring the Goddess Liberty facing left (a much younger appearance from the previous design) on the front of the coin, and the reverse with a bald eagle at rest facing a rising sun clutching an olive branch symbolizing peace in his claw and the word “PEACE” underneath around the rim. A previous design included a broken sword at the base, but it felt this signified defeat, so in was eliminated.

Approval of the new design was obtained in 1921, but all mints were running a maximum minting the old design coins, but dies were finally made and production begun by the end of December with the Philadelphia Mint striking 1 million of the new coins.

Because the word “PEACE” is on the coin and the purpose was to commemorate the peace that followed the end of

World War I, the coin is aptly referred to as the Peace Dollar verses its’ predecessor the Morgan Dollar which was named after its’ designer. The Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 to 1928 and then 1934 and 1935. From a collectors perspective it is a short and easy set to complete, comprised of only 24 coins representing coins struck by all mints. If one were to assemble a date set (one coin for each year, regardless of the mint, it would require only 10 coins to complete.

The first year coin, 1921, is unique in the series and the second lowest mintage of 1 million coins. The lowest is the 1928 Philadelphia minted dollar with 360,000 struck. What makes the 1921 unique is the fact that it was struck in high relief, giving the features amore life-like appearance. Unfortunately this high relief caused minting problems and bankers complained that the coins wouldn’t stack properly, so the coin was redesigned, lowering the design of Liberty on the front and the eagle on the reverse.

Collecting a full 24 coin set in circulated condition would require paying around $200 for the 1928-P and $90 for the 1921. The 10 coin date set would still require purchasing a 1921, but the 1928-P could be replaced with a 1928-S, which is considerably cheaper. The 24 coin set could be completed for under $1000 while the 10 coin set under $500.

If a collector were to try to assemble an uncirculated set of 24 coins, the budget would have to be considerably higher. I purchased an uncirculated set for $2500 which did not include the 1934-S, which by its-self is worth around $3000.

As a footnote to the Peace Dollar series, in 1964 the government authorizing the striking of silver dollars which resulted in the Denver mint during 1965 striking over 300,000 silver dollars with the 964 date. Because the price of silver in the coin was higher that the face value and the knowledge that these coins would never circulate because of that fact, the coins were never released and all (we think) were melted.

Micronutrition Protocol for COVID Pandemic

H

umanity has seen many epidemics come and go.

Coronavirus is behaving similarly to the common flu virus, only it’s more contagious.

Scientific community controlled by the World Health Organization provides solutions against microbes with antibiotics, antivirals , antifungals and vaccines �to kill the enemy�. Such scientific wonders take time to develop and implement on average one to two years or more. Time is needed to prove the efficiency of a new drug to be named for a new virus. On the other side, we know that everything is in state of change, so the virus may mutate and change. The big question is: what do we need to do in the meantime?

Everyone knows and not a single person can deny that a strong immune system is an appropriate answer for many diseases. Optimal nutrition along with super micronutrients is historically considered the most effective way to limit infection and especially viruses. We have considerable experience in the use of oxidative intervention using bio oxidative and high doses of vitamin C. This is consistent with clinical reports over 75 years a plethora of physicians around the world have successfully used micronutrients, and vitamin C to support patients against antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal drug-resistant infections. Humanity might benefit greatly from combining the wisdom of the pest with today's technological advances and other novel intervention therapies. To be clear, the killer virus has no political media or academic affiliations. The management of patients that suffer from COVID and mainly to prevent it should be assigned exclusively to the clinically based practitioners that live in the frontlines with pandemic.

At this urgent time medicine needs to incorporate all existing appropriate methods to help the patient and prevent socio-economic and social collapse. Now is a time for politics and the media to force the regulatory bodies to become more tolerant to the frontline health providers that are brave enough to use naturally derived medicines and remedies that have shown great promise but were ignored. Using common sense the solution to every pandemic is to utilize the qualitative scientific methods which have been used for thousands of years dating back to 6th century BC. The providers at the front line that faces the problem daily should utilize their experience and knowledge to save patients from lethal pandemic without a fear of authorities for doing the job.

I am putting this information and convinced that micronutrition protocol must be utilized to prevent, protect, ameliorate and most importantly confine the COVID outbreak.

Nutritional deficiency affects the immune response to infections. Utilizing micronutrition and bio oxidative therapies against pandemic virus is not rejection of conventional medicine.

It is common sense. Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Magnesium and Zinc are essential to fight all viruses. As we face epidemic diseases we must not limit the fight to drugs and vaccines where strong evidence exists to back micro nutritional support. We need methods that work not fear to make the immune system more weak. This information is designed to bring light and hope to everyone affected by fear and economic devastation around the world. We need methods that work not panic and fear.
