HERO Campaign Pledge & Plunge Participants from across the state will rally for designated driving January 1 in OC

CEAN CITY, NJ – For some, it’s an annual tradition; for others, a chilling new experience. Either way, everyone involved can agree that the HERO Campaign Pledge & Plunge in Ocean City on New Year’s Day is one of the most exhilarating ways to support safe and sober designated driving.

Splashing their way into the New Year, more than 1,000 participants are expected to take the HERO Pledge and rush into the Ocean City surf at the Music Pier on Sunday, January 1st. In years past, the event has drawn both locals and supporters from across the state of New Jersey

and from every age group, many in costumes or sporting festive hats. Last year’s dip included at least one pair of newlyweds: Lindsay and Mike Feeley of Morris Plains, who tied the knot just after midnight hours earlier.

A majority generally brave the water up to their knees and make a hasty exit, but each year a few hardy souls are determined to take a literal plunge, getting drenched from head to toe and emerging with wild shouts and big grins.

The plunge is paired with a pledge to the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, a national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing drunk driving by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. Plungers are asked to take the HERO Pledge to be a designated driver for friends and family whenever alcohol is served, and those who donate $25 to the campaign will receive a commemorative long-sleeved T-shirt.

T

he winter of 2016/2017 has arrived. This winter is looking much easier to forecast than 2015/2016.. Last winter we had a strong El Nino, which led to warmer ocean waters. For our area that meant warmer weather with above average precipitation - mostly in the form of rain and several major storms. We were hit with one major snowstorm in late January but otherwise the winter was pretty warm

and uneventful.

This winter we have a weak La Nina which means colder than normal ocean waters. Typically this means a colder and drier winter with occasional wintry events.

The average snowfall for the area is 17 inches. 5 of those inches come in January, 7” in February, 1” in March and 4” in December. On average we see about 9 days of snowfall. Most of the snow in our area is caused by systems that move up the coast.

They are called Nor Easters due to the northeast winds associated with the storm. These storms can cause extensive flooding and wind damage along the coast while the inland areas get a blizzard.

big snowstorm several things must happen. Arctic air has to be in place so the precipitation can fall as snow.

2nd is the ocean water temperature.

The ocean needs to be at 40 or below so areas on the coast can see snow.

If not, conditions can be drastically different from the coast to areas just inland.

My prediction for snowfall amounts for the area is that we will see just above average. Around 20 inches of snow with most of it coming from a few storms. I do not see this winter being as volitale as last one.

A Non-Resolution From the Editor

I

resolve not to resolve this year. I’ve always been an all or nothing kind of girl. I would make resolutions and when I inevitability broke them I would proceed to emotionally beat myself up.

“What’s the matter with you? You are just not good enough.” I would chastise myself. I have done this in all areas of my life, but my weight is a favorite topic, second only to my parenting skills. A typical resolution would be that I will prepare organic unprocessed meals and we will all eat together every night. Truth is we eat

at Wawa on the run most of the time.

I try to limit my carbs and sugar but I’ve eaten 3 Dove chocolates while writing this. If a friend told me they ate at Wawa or indulged in too much chocolate, I would not hesitate to tell them they are human and mishaps are part of the journey. Then I had a crazy idea. What if I gave myself the same kindness that I would give to others?

Success is always two steps forward and at least 1 step back. The road to any success has bumps and potholes. It is never smooth and straight. Yet perseverance and pushing forward towards goals despite mishaps, mistakes and bad days is progress and progress leads to mastery of our goals.

January 1st we have an opportunity to make a fresh start, but the truth is every day we have that same chance to drop old habits, step into higher standards and choose to be a better person than we were yesterday.

Steel Pier’s New Observation Wheel Construction Underway Change of plans helps progress

G

ood news was announced earlier this week for the Giant Steel Wheel coming to Atlantic City. It will rise sooner than expected since a concrete deck is not needed to support the base. It was determined that the existing base was plenty strong enough- it was built to support a 12 story building planned by the previous owners.

The 200-foot, climate-controlled Observation Wheel will be one of the tallest in the country, and will feature 42 fully-enclosed gondolas complete with food and beverage service, as well as air conditioning and heating for year-round use. Constructed in Melara, Italy, the Observation Wheel will be built upon a new platform

A gondola of The Capital Wheel, near Washington DC is similar to the one planned for Atlantic City. adjacent to Steel Pier and will offer spectacular panoramic views of Atlantic City and the surrounding communities up and down the shore. Hometown Hero: Jennifer Hansen

“Y

ou have to give back what was so freely given to you,” Jennifer Hansen’s sponsor told her after she had recovered from a 10 year battle with addiction. Those words resonated with her and in the last 20 years, she has given back in a big way.

“People do not have the opportunity to get enough treatment because insurance does not cover enough,” said Jennifer Hansen of Margate. The Hansen Foundation began with Jennifer’s dream to provide more.

After she overcame rehab and got back on her feet, Hansen began by taking in recovering addicts that had nowhere to go and allowing them to stay on her couch while they began to rebuild their lives. The agreement was that they needed to remain committed to sober living.

She called it the “couch commitment.”

Quickly she realized there were so many more folks addicted than could possibly fit in her home.

Along with her family, Jennifer Hansen created the Hansen Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps those recovering from addiction. It provides a sober living environment and helps them access treatment. Hansen House for men opened in 2004 and Hansen House for women opened in 2006. These are both currently owned and operated by the Hendricks House.

In 2007, the Hansen Foundation opened Serenity House, extended care sober living residence for women in Absecon. A second Serenity House for men opened in 2011 along with the Randy Scarborough House for men in Somers Point.

Most recently, in 2015, Serenity Estates for women was opened.

These unique sober-living residences are long-term, allowing recovering addicts to live there up to 18 months, giving them with enough time and opportunity to change their lives.

Additionally, the Hansen Foundation owns and operates Hope Farm in Galloway. It offers a combination of job training, transitional employment, horticultural

therapy and equine therapy for people who are in recovery from addiction.

Most recently, Hansen has opened Enlightened Solutions in Egg Harbor City.

The face of an addict today is very different than you most people imagine.

It is no longer someone young from the inner city, skeletal and homeless. Now it is the face of friends, family and coworkers.

It is often well educated people in their forties that will tell you “It started with a prescription.” Typically it was Vicadine, Percocet or Oxycontine that was prescribed for pain. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that nearly half of heroin users start by abusing prescription drugs.

Hansen says that in her observations, addicts all have one thing in common: low self esteem. With her own children, Hansen looks for any and every opportunity to build her children up and to let them know that they do not need drugs or alcohol to have fun.

Jennifer Hansen has bounced back from the depths of addiction. She and her team continue to make a positive impact for those recovering from drug dependency here in Atlantic County. plus a side of refried beans. Warning: this is the single most addictive item we’ve consumed in 2016. Once you try El Tipico’s chilaquiles, you will be going back for more.

▶Appetizer: Beets, roasted rainbow carrots, candied walnuts and chevre from Ventnor’s darling new BYOB, Cardinal Bistro. Sure, everyone’s bill of fare now seems to include a variant of this too-trendy, beet-based concept.

But chef/partner Michael Brennan’s take, including a stimulating, palate-pleasing gremolata, demonstrated that a little creativity goes a long way.

Also the single prettiest art-schoolworthy plating of 2016. ▶Pasta: From Gregory’s Somers Point Restaurant Week menu, spaghetti with clams and chorizo in a white wine reduction sauce, accompanied by a garlic and white bean crostini.

This hybridized version of traditional white clam sauce actually made us a fan of chorizo, a product we typically eschew. Most notable; a sky-high, coconut-infused-and-frosted yellow pound cake, perhaps the best coconut pastry we’ve ever sampled, anywhere.

Lessons from a Lifeless Tree

T

he day after Christmas and our tree came down. Now, I realize this might be normal for some, but not for us. Usually, it stays up at least through New Year’s Day but this year is different. We didn’t want to de-trim and carry it outside but there was no other choice.

Our tree was fresh cut from the farm.

We’ve always had a fresh tree. Or at least I thought it was still fresh until I heard these little sounds of needles falling and watched under the tree each day leading up to the 25th to see a bed of green gradually build up. I was careful to keep up with watering the tree and to look at it from a distance you really couldn’t tell anything was wrong.

So, here come my thoughts on what I learned from the lifeless Christmas tree.

This time of year (maybe more than other times) it can be easy to get caught up in the running here and there and passing people wishing them a Merry Christmas or

Happy Holidays. Most people put a smile on their face and we don’t think twice. But for some, this time of year is anything but the “most wonderful time”. It may mean their first year without a loved one or it could magnify the joy others seem to have that they lack. Like the Christmas tree that looks great from a distance, many times a closer examination reveals a different story.

As this year comes to a close and a new year begins, I invite you to join me

in a deliberate decision for 2017. Along with the goals you set for yourself and milestones you set out to achieve, consider including this twist to each day.

Each morning when my feet hit the floor, I’m taking the advice of my friend and mentor John Maxwell.

I’m hoping you will too. I’m making a point to include these three aspects to my day.

Value people. When we take on this attitude in our daily interactions with others, it makes a huge difference in the way we act and react to situations around us. How often have you become frustrated or irritated with someone, only to realize later that they were battling issues at home or privately that we had no idea of.

It bears repeating. Value people.

Look for ways to add value to people.

Every day we all cross paths with people who could use a kind word or encouraging comment. You and I may never realize the impact we can have on someone's day when we take the time to notice them and offer encouragement or a listening ear.

Encourage others to “pass it on” and add

value to people they come across. If you can be the spark that ignites a fire in someone else, imagine the impact you can have. They in turn ignite a spark and we’re all better off.

Don’t misunderstand. I’m not living in a rose colored world where I think everything and every day is going to be this utopian world. But if we make a deliberate effort to value and add value to those around us, our lives will have a much greater impact than we could have ever imagined not only in 2017 but for years to come.

No Satisfaction The Rolling Stones and Donald Trump in Atlantic City

ublished on concert ticketing site Pollstar, this yarn was delivered by concert promoter and Broadway producer Michael Cohl at the 2015 Pollstar Live! event, and offers an intersting tale about the President-elect during his rise in the 1980s and The Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones were closing the first leg of their successful 1989 Steel Wheels tour with three shows in Atlantic City. The 16,000 seat Boardwalk Hall was the smallest venue the band played in its three-and-a-half-month trek across the United States and Canada. The highlight of the three nights was the December 19th date, which featured guest appearances by Eric Clapton, legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker and singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin of Guns n’ Roses.

Michael Cohl was the Stones promoter for their Steel Wheels tour. He is the former chairman of concert promoter Live Nation, and over the course of his career has worked on massive tours by Michael Jackson, U2 and Barbra Streisand.

Michael Cohl recalls, “I realized that when they did a big boxing

match they would separate the promotion and the fight. For the fight, you’d get a site fee from Las Vegas. You’d get a dollar, a million, a billion. Whatever. You’d get a ‘site fee’ and you’d get a worldwide closed-circuit. I thought, geez, if I can separate the Stones from their own gig, and just concentrate on the pay-per-view, then I might pull it off.” A pay-per-view live concert could produce huge profits.

The problem? He couldn’t find a taker in Vegas. “They didn’t get it, they didn’t like rock music yet.”

The one person who got it was Trump, who had properties in Atlantic City. So Cohl pitched the idea. “I opened my big mouth in the meeting with the Rolling Stones where they go, ‘This is all great, but we’re not going to be affiliated with Donald Trump at all” And I go, ‘I will control Donald Trump! Don’t you worry!’” that he wouldn’t be involved in any promotional activity. He couldnt even attend the show.

But just before 6 p.m. on concert night, Cohl was beckoned into the venue’s press room. “I run to the press room in the next building and what do you think is happening? There’s Donald Trump giving a press conference, in our room!

"I say, come on, Donald, what are you doing? A) You promised us you wouldn’t even be here and, B) you promised you would never do this.’ He says, ‘But they begged me to go up, Michael! They begged me to go up!’ I say, ‘Stop it. Stop it.

Thinking he’d extinguished the fire, Cohl returned to the dressing room only to get word five minutes later that Trump had found his way back to the mic to continue the press conference.

Finally, according to the promoter, the Stones’ Keith Richards got involved. “They call me back, at which point Keith pulls out his knife and slams it on the table and says to me, ‘What the hell do I have you for? Do I have to go over there and fire him myself? One of us is leaving the building – either him, or us.’ Words were exchanged, the upshot of which, recalls Cohl, “I’m trying to throw Donald Trump out of his own building.”

The rest of the story, recalled by Cohl, is as follows: “[Trump] looks at me and goes berserk.

fights!’ And I notice the three security gaurds he’s with, in trench coats, two of them are putting on gloves and the other one is putting on brass knuckles. I go on the walkie-talkie and I call for Jim Callahan, who was head of our security, and I go, ‘Jim, I think I’m in a bit of trou-

ble.’ And he says, ‘Just turn around.’

“I turn around. He’s got 40 of the roadie crew with tire irons and hockey sticks and screwdrivers, effectively sending off Trump and his goons. “And that was the night I fired Donald Trump,” Cohl concluded.

f you sing along to songs in the car or belt out a few tunes in the shower, you may be doing yourself quite a bit of good. Various formal and informal studies point to singing as a great way to boost both mental and physical health. Though the people around you may prefer you not belt out a few tunes, there are numerous reasons to sing and sing often.

Evidence points to singing as having psychological benefits, and singing also increases oxygenation in the bloodstream.

Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, has studied the developmental and medical aspects of singing for more than 30 years. Welch consistently advocates for singing, saying it can serve as an aerobic activity that promotes a healthy heart.

Singing can help to alleviate stress by releasing oxytocin, a natural stress reliever, into the blood. Stress has a number of adverse effects, and any steps taken to help relieve stress can lighten one's mood and release tension.

Singing, particularly group singing, can lessen feelings of depression and

loneliness. In their paper "Psychological and physiological effects of singing in a choir," researchers at the Abant Izzet Baysal University in Turkey noted that singing relieves anxiety and contributes to quality of life. Group singing may sync the heart rates of participants and could actually serve as a type of guided group meditation.

Yet another study, this one from researchers in the Department of Music at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, indicated that you don't even have to be a good singer to reap the benefits of singing. The study found that singing " can produce satisfying and therapeutic sensations even when the sound produced by the vocal instrument is of mediocre quality." That means no one need be afraid of singing their favorite songs, even if they fall out of tune. The benefits can be worth the few awkward glances that come your way.

Singing is more than just a social activity or a popular pastime. It's a way for people to improve their health in an easy and enjoyable way. Those who start singing may see their stress subside and their overall well-being improve.

The weekly AFTERNOON PRESCHOOL STORYTIME is held each Wednesday beginning January 18 through March 29 at 1:30 pm. The programs are suggested for ages 3 1/2 to 5, and registration is required. Come hear fun stories and make a cool craft! An even younger group meets Wednesday mornings for TODDLER STORYTIME, beginning January 18 until March 22 at 10:00 am. The program is suggested for ages 1 1/2 to 3, and registration requested. Bring your little ones to hear stories and sing songs!

This Present Comfort

I

am sitting on my comfortable couch with a 55-inch flat screen TV in front of me. I just controlled the lighting to my liking and before I go any further, please excuse me, I’m going to grab a quick drink and snack from the fridge.

Okay, I’m back now, still comfortable, but at a loss for words to type.

And I’m humbly reminded how this is the complete opposite of how I used to write while in prison. There I never had an ounce of trouble writing a full page of deep thoughts graciously surrounded by peace in the midst of so much chaos and so little comfort.

Back then, I typed on an antiquated word processor, positioned on an empty box on my bed. The box, (often pulled from the trash), was used to elevate the machine to keep me from slouching while typing.

My bed served as my desktop, and there was nowhere to place my knees, as my plastic green chair would be tucked up against the metal frame of my bed.

And instead of having a wall or TV in front of me, the view ahead was beds and bodies coupled with constant commotion and verbal pollution.

Yet oddly, there, I was never at a loss for words and actually wrote a blog a day for almost five years as well as my monthly Prison Talk column. Now, out here, I struggle to write just two blogs a week, even as I sit in comfort.

People ask me all the time if I have nightmares about my time in prison.

I don’t correct them, though I’d like to say—“You mean my time in freedom?” You see sadly, you never really know peace until you feel chaos. You never come to see the beauty of liberty until it’s experienced through the

ugliness of confinement. And it was there, in prison, where I knew true comfort because of true discomfort.

I readjust myself on this couch and realize how comfort is actually a spiritual disservice. I’m at a loss for words because in this comfort it seems as if my words are getting lost.

I mean, they are inside of me, but they are so contrary to my comfortable setting. All of my needs are being met by me. Such a controlled environment: I control the lighting; I control the temperature; I control the TV; I control what I’m going to eat and when.

These are my struggling thoughts, because they are not finding their peace through any struggle. Yep. I miss being so pressed in the midst of confusion because this present comfort seems like nothing more than a spiritual distraction.

Digital Marketing Minute

here are two things that are beneficial to any type of relationship: consistency and presence. The relationship between business and audience is no different. Let’s discuss how they relate to your digital marketing strategy.

Consistency How do you feel when someone shows inconsistency in your life? Disappointment, confusion, and ultimately, loss of interest.

When your online community notices inconsistency, they’re likely to feel the same way.

You want to avoid loss of interest, and most importantly, you don’t want those pesky algorithms to remove you from people’s feeds because they don’t see your commitment.

This is why it’s crucial to have consistency in your social media marketing strategy.

It’s overwhelming sometimes to commit to a specific posting schedule, but you must.

I always advise my clients that when they decide they want to post things on certain days, make sure it’s a schedule they can stick to. Having a consistent posting routine will not only tell the algorithms you’re serious about being involved with your audience, but it will build expectations and foster relationships with your community. Having trouble figuring out the best times and days to post what? Just view your Facebook & Instagram insights to see when your audience is most active.

All-Encompassing Presence I often get the question, “What platforms do I NEED to be on?” and my answer is usually, “All of them.” Now, I know some of you just rolled your eyes reading this. Hear me out.

There are a few reasons I insist that my clients have a presence on all digital platforms.

1) Search Engine Optimization. Without geeking out too hard with technical talk, the more legitimate, high-traffic websites that your name is on and active with, the higher you will rank with search engines.

2) Claimed business name. By creating accounts and having a presence on all platforms, you eliminate the possibility of someone else registering your preferred name. I know that’s a very “duh!” answer, but I’ve had many people experience this

issue! You always want the simplest, easiest @username for branding purposes and for people to find you. It’s frustrating when you have to add underscores or numbers to your username because someone else has already registered the one you need! If I’m @MarsollunaMedia on Instagram, but @Marsolluna_MM on Twitter, it makes it difficult for people to find me and recognize me as the same company. I can simply tell people, “search @MarsollunaMedia on social media to connect with me!” and know that they’ll find me and not someone else.

3) Top of mind messages. Try to think about a situation you’ve been in that goes like this: You are connected with your local car dealership on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram. You’re scrolling through Facebook. You see that they posted an offer for discounted oil changes. Okay, you scroll by, maybe you share it for your friends who could possibly benefit from it.

Later in the day you’re on Twitter and see that same message, maybe worded a little differently. It reminds you of earlier when you saw it on Facebook. Hmm. You start to wonder when the last time you got an oil change was. That night you’re scrolling through Instagram and that post about discounted oil changes is in your feed. At this point, you’re really wondering if you should pass up this deal!

Do you see how having a presence on those 3 platforms led to an action?

Imagine if that car dealership also had a claimed and managed listing on Foursquare, Google+, and some great posts on their Pinterest page about car maintenance. Anyone on the fence about using your services would see your dedication and knowledge, and at this point is easily converted into a customer.

Consistency and presence are simple, organic ways to build your brand loyalty, your community, and ultimately your business. Combine these two elements with some killer retargeting ad campaigns and you’ll be knocking this digital marketing thing out of the park! Got questions?
