Hometown Hero: Greg DePiano

f Santa was a local, his name would surely be Greg DePiano.

“Every child should wake up with a new toy on Christmas morning,” said DePiano. That is exactly what Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program works towards. In 2015, Toys for Kids gave out 12,500 toys right here in Atlantic County.

DePiano is a retired Sergeant at the Atlantic Count y Depar tment of Public Safety. Toys for Kids began in 1988 with DePiano and two of his coworkers, Geraldine Cohen an d Alicia DeFelice, cleaning and attempting to restore used toys to regift to

children in need. DePiano decided to connect with the community and raised $200 to purchase new toys for children. From there, the growth has been exponential.

In the early years, DePiano would host parties and ask each

guest to bring a new toy to donate rather than the customary dessert or bottle of wine. Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program is a big operation now with many major sponsors. They have a truck and a trailer with the logo of many spon-

sors proudly displayed on it. They also have a commercial space they utilize to sort and prepare for the distribution of the toys.

DePiano credits the success of the organization to the support of the local law enforcement and

community. Michelle Riordan is DePiano’s best friend and Event Coordinator for the organization.

She describes DePiano fondly “the rough exterior is the cop in him, but we know his heart and soul and that’s why we stay.” They have worked together since 1990 to make smiles on Christmas morning.

It’s not only the kids that DePiano cares about. He also takes toys, usually stuffed animals, to the elderly in nursing homes and to individuals with disabilities also. If there are children in the area hospitals, he makes sure Santa is there with a gift for them.

DePiano shared that one of his favorite moments was last Christmas when he and Santa knocked on the door of a single mom raising two young children, one with autism.

They had brand new bikes for each of the kids and their faces just lit up.

Their mom Kelli Peddicort said "It was the best Christmas ever." The kids couldn’t have been more excited to have Santa visit them Christmas day. It really made Christmas extra special for all of us.”

From the Editor

he days are long, but the years are short,” the little old lady standing in front of my cart load of screaming children told me.

It was 1996 and going to the grocery store required more planning than most people would put into packing for a vacation. We had twin one year-old little girls and a threeyear old son, who was just diagnosed with autism.

I remember thinking “Lady, you have no idea.”

Well, it turns out the lady was right. The twins are half way through college now and our son is 22. It seemed like they would be little for-

ever. Then I blinked and now they are adults.

I lived much of my life trying to get to a destination, never realizing that the real magic was in the journey. As I look back, it was the little daily, unplanned moments that really defined us. The laughs, silliness, looks and inside jokes are the memories I prize most.

As we count down the days to Christmas, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of shopping, party prepping and running from event to event. Sometimes I need to remind myself to enjoy it, slow down and take in the sights and sounds all around me. Put down the cell phone, close the lap top and cherish the loved ones that grow up too fast and won’t live forever.

As the band Green Day put it “So take the photographs and still frames in your mind. I hope you had the time of your life.”

We wish you a joyful holiday season full of little moments that make your heart smile.

How To Make 2017 Your Best Year Yet

he New Year is almost here. If you’re like me, you’re running around trying to get everything ready for this season.

But there is a large part of me thinking ahead to 2017 and what lies ahead.

Our last time together I talked about the motivation to set goals and plans, but motivation isn’t enough. I shared three ways you can stay on track when making those New Year goals. They are, Think Through a Clear Plan, Be Accountable and Know Your End Game.

I want to suggest three additional thoughts to help you through the process. They all begin with the letter P. It’s a great way to look at the big picture from a slightly different perspective. In many ways, these concepts are a way of looking at the strategy we went over before from another angle.

The three words are Purpose, Plan and Persist. Let me explain.

Define your PURPOSE – Probably the best way to look at any goal that is going to result in a meaningful outcome is to ask yourself this question.

What is my purpose in the goal I’m trying to achieve? In other words, what is my why? Why do I want to accomplish this? Being clear with this question will go a long way toward helping you when you are tempted to give up. And you will be tempted to give up. When that happens, remind yourself of the purpose of your goal and that will help keep you on track.

Develop and execute your PLAN – In my last article, I touched on the importance of a plan. I can’t emphasize this enough. If you go into any goal or “resolution” without a plan, it won’t be

long before you find yourself spinning in circles. A solid plan to get where you want to go provides focus and also allows you to recognize and celebrate the achievements along the way. If you don’t know where you are on your timeline to success, how will you know if you’ve made any progress?

Determine to PERSIST – The third and perhaps most important step in your process is the determination to persist at all costs. You will want to give up. You will hit roadblocks.

There will be setbacks. Count on it.

But as Napoleon Hill teaches in his classic work, Think and Grow Rich, virtually anyone who ever achieved anything worthwhile practiced the art of persistence in order to realize

their dream. They refused to quit.

The very fact that you’ve read this article to this point tells me you want to get serious about achieving something great in 2017. OC Skatepark Hosts Winter Skate Jam

pectators and skateboarders braved the blustery 40 degree conditions on December 3rd for Ocean City Skatepark’s second ever competition, The Winter Skate Jam. Nearly 50 competitors showed up bearing gifts in a true holiday spirit as the local skateboarding/ surf community got together to help the less fortunate. Entry fee for the competition was a children’s Christmas present. The gifts were donated to the “Waves of Caring” program which benefits families in the area.

Representing the program, Fire Chief Jim Smith, stated that over 100 local families signed up for some sort of assistance this holiday season.

The event went off with good music and good vibes. Some highlights of the event were local skater- Nick Brady defended his title as the 16+ under champ and took out the competition; 9 year old OCMD resident Carlin Makibbin took the trip up to win the Girls 16 and under division as well as placing 2nd in the Micro-Grom Division.

Refreshments including hot chocolate, candy, drinks, and pretzels, were provided by the OCHS “Best Buddy” program. This program pairs up special needs children with peer models from their school to share

There, in a converted pizzeria/ Italian deli- formerly Josephine’sDan Freeman and his family have authored a novel, unique business.

Called ‘Big Bad Dad’s Jams’ Freeman, along with wife Jennifer and daughters Oona, 11 and Aoife, 9, have operated from this outpost since May of 2015. Their dozens of products have been available since 2010.

jelly. He was hooked on making jam after tasting that first batch.

Inspired by a television piece about two women who had started a jam and jelly company of their own, they began tinkering with formulas.

Eventually, that process rendered a hot pepper jelly which has become their signature item. “The recipe has evolved some” Freeman elaborates that he now offers that popular original version plus one strictly intended for hardcore heat fans. That blistering blend, accurately labeled ‘Inferno Jam’ includes the world’s three most incendiary peppers; ghost, scorpion and the reigning capsaicin champ, Carolina reaper varietals.

For reference purposes, all are well over 1,000,000 Units on the Scoville rating system utilized to measure pepper pungency. Literally meaning it would require a million eight ounce glasses of sugar water to effectively dilute their searing impact.

Unlike most enterprises handling products derived from these fiendish fruits, Freeman diligently sources whole peppers, not content to take the easy route of utilizing an industrial extract. Obtaining them locally from Pontano Farms in Vineland, they arrive in gallon-size Ziploc bags. So filled with manic intensity are these crinkly little devils that merely unsealing a box of them produced a waft of stinging heat, despite peppers airtight-wrapped within thick plastic.

Don’t get the mistaken impression that Dad’s is strictly about spicy fare, they offer full lines of sweet, savory and seasonal items as well. To accomplish this, Freeman patronizes other regional farms including Pastore’s in Hammonton, Liepe’s in Mays Landing and Levari’s in Beuna. During their first five years of business, manufacturing took place at several locations, including a VFW Hall and a friend’s restaurant in Absecon. Dad’s philosophy is simple: no artificial flavorings or preservatives, everything made by hand, in small batches.

Like many small-scale food entrepreneurs, they initially made a name for themselves at festivals, farmers markets and New Jersey wine grower events. On Saturday, December 18th, Dad’s will be on-site at Cape May County’s Willow Creek Winery event, ‘Paws and Pinot’.

Held at the winery’s West Cape May facility from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., this inaugural affair features local animal rescue groups.

Freeman’s dedication to his newfound calling is nothing short of remarkable, considering he remains employed full-time at Flat Stone.

When queried what has surprised him most, he pauses, and then answers “How the products have been received and the following that I have amassed.”

Asked about plans, he mentions developing other lines including a series of BBQ sauces in the not-toodistant future.

oliday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as families decorate their homes.

Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there's no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there's something for everyone.

In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized.

The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song.

'Silent Night': One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), 'Silent Night,' was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today's version is a slow lullaby, but it's believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time.

'O Holy Night': This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, 'Minuit,

'Do You Hear What I Hear': Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The original context has long been forgotten, and 'Do You Hear What I Heare' is now a staple of holiday celebrations.

'Santa Claus is Coming to Town': James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother.

It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

'The Christmas Song': This classic Christmas song was written in 1944

by Bob Wells and Mel Torm'. It's usually subtitled 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' The song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole's rendition of the song is among the more popular versions.

Christmas songs are enjoyed and performed year after year. Popular songs continue to endure and attract new fans.

The many ways to recycle Christmas greeting cards

he Greeting Card Association says Americans purchase some 6.5 billion greeting cards every year. Of those, around 1.6 billion are Christmas cards.

Exchanging cards is a great way for people to show their loved ones that they're thinking about them, and such cards make for festive ornaments to display around homes. But when the holiday season ends, recycling those cards into other items can make good use of the paper resources and turn what's normally a single-use item into an enduring trinket.

Turn this year's cards into next year's gift tags. Cut out circles, rectangles or any shape you desire. Otherwise, visit the

scrapbooking aisle of your favorite craft store and purchase a paper punch to make easy work of cutting those shapes.

Transform a greeting card into a mini puzzle for a youngster.

Glue silly characters from Christmas cards onto a sheet of magnet. Then use these magnets for decorations next year.

Frame favorite cards so their messages can endure year after year.

Turn a beautiful card into a keepsake.

Use a decoupage medium to attach a card to a ceramic or wood backing.

Coat with a polyurethane top coat to protect it.

Use greeting cards to make wine

charms for holiday entertaining. Guests can keep track of their glasses with ease.

Use cut-outs of cards to improve the appearance of plain gift wrap or bags.

Insert cut rounds of greeting cards into the inside of can lids to create crafty ornaments.

Make a paper Christmas tree from cutouts on greeting cards.

Encourage kids to make a photo collage from the cards they like. Mount their efforts on poster board and save for next year.

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, can build up inside a home, especially when windows are kept shut for long stretches of time, which is often the case in winter. Indoor plants can counter such stale air, in some cases filtering out VOCs to make the air inside a home more breathable and healthy. The following are a handful of houseplants that can improve indoor air quality. * Aloe: Many of us know aloe for its restorative properties with regard to treating burns and cuts, but aloe also improves indoor air quality by helping to clear a home of the byproducts, including formaldehyde, of chemical-based household cleaners. Aloe loves the sun, so if you hope to keep an aloe plant healthy through the winter, be sure to place the plant in a window that gets lots of sun exposure throughout the day. * Gerber daisy: Like aloe, a gerber daisy needs ample sunlight, and tends to only withstand winters in warmer climates. But homeowners who live in

such climates may still keep their windows closed in winter, and those that do can use these colorful, low-maintenance flowers to remove trichloroethylene, a chemical that clothes may be exposed to during the dry cleaning process. * Golden pothos: The golden pothos can survive a winter, but homeowners should be careful not to let the plant dry out, which can happen if they are directly exposed to sunlight. A golden pothos vine will grow quickly, so a hanging basket is a great way to keep one inside a home, where the plant can help fight formaldehyde. * Ficus benjamina: Also known as a weeping fig, the ficus benjamina can be difficult to overwinter. But that does not mean your ficus benjamina, which can filter pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from a home, won't make it through the winter.

You just need to figure out the right watering and light conditions for the plant.

Such conditions can be discussed with a gardening professional. * Warneck dracaena: The warneck dracaena, or dracaena deremensis, fights pollutants created by varnishes and oils. The warneck dracaena is a sturdy houseplant that is difficult to kill, but it still thrives in temperatures that are between 70 F and 80 F.

long with the fragrant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poinsettias make up a key component of holiday decorating.

Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico.

Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain.

The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts, and the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts.

Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short periods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts.

surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don't let the plant sit in water. Overor under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently.

Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom.

The Ohio State University Extension says poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradually drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape.

Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they flower about 10 weeks after the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less. Therefore, to have the plant in full flower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the first part of October until Thanksgiving. Many people find the affordability of poinsettias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth.

The Chance of a White Christmas

ith the recent cold blast that hit our area from Canada, ever yone wants to know if we are going to have a white Christmas this year. Before I give you my best guess, I have to tell all of you the proper definition of a White Christmas. This is defined as having an inch or more of snow on the ground at 7 am local time on Christmas morning.

Last year if you remember, we had the warmest December on record with a few days in the 70's. It felt more like April than late December.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn to 2016. With the cold air likely to hang around through Christmas, the only thing we need is precipitation right? Well not so fast. In order to get a nice snowstorm the ocean water temperature needs to be around 40 degrees or below. Right now the temperature is hovering around 50 or so which is a few degrees above normal. The ocean influence itself can change any snow over to rain quickly, especially near the coast. A White Christmas has occurredlocally just nine times since 1874.

The last time we had a white Christmas was 2009. A blizzard hit the area the weekend before with

Atlantic City getting a foot of snow.

Other areas got more, while areas to our north and west, like Trenton getting only a few inches. There were scattered power outages along the coast and the blizzard of 2009 was one of several snowstorms to hit the region that winter. For the record the most amount of snow that we have seen on Christmas morning was from a Christmas Eve snowstorm in 1966 that dropped between five and ten inches of snow with much more the closer you got to Philadelphia.

So now the question is are we going to have a white Christmas this year or will it be like most years and stay relatively quiet? The odds of a White Christmas here are between five and seven percent. The average high temperature for our area on Christmas Day is in the middle 40's.

This year it will likely be much colder than that based on short to midrange computer models. On that information alone, I have to increase the percentages because if we get some precipitation with the colder air in place, we could see some snow.

With the cold air in place, the big question is when will there be chances for snow? Short and long term range computer models continue to show an active weather pattern through the end of the December. Will warm air from the south try to sneak up and ruin our party or will the arctic air from Canada hold so we can get some snow this year before Christmas?

That remains to be seen, but with the current weather pattern I will put the odds of a White Christmas at about 12 percent for our area.

That is twice as likely as an average year, but I would still bet against it.

In reality, our memorial in honor of Jennifer Cakertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brief life on this earth was never meant to go on in perpetuity. At this 10th year of the anniversary of her death, we can look back proudly and say that we truly made a mark on the youth who showed passion and talent in pursuing the arts. Jennifer would be extremely proud of what we accomplished to honor her memory.

W

e just celebrated our 11th anniversary and so far, our time together reads like a singles ad. We enjoy long walks in the woods and our time on the beach. We have most breakfasts together and share our toast and jam. Last year we went on a week long road trip to Vermont, just the two of us. It was early in the fall and the leaves were not quite at their peak. We went for a hike and the forest floor was still damp from the night before diminishing the sound of our footsteps. The day of hiking ended with a quiet dinner followed by relaxing in bed with the TV on until we both fell into a restful sleep.

We have both been aging gracefully during our relationship and now also share the graying of our facial hair. No, I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been talking about my wife but our mixed breed 65 pound dog we have named Memphis. My wife and I have never been to this fine Tennessee city nor are we rabid (pun intended) fans of Elvis. I think we gave more thought to the naming of our dog than we did for our children. Memphis was a rescue from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans where thousands of dogs were displaced from the storm. As the story goes, a well meaning man rescued a large quantity of dogs and kept them at his residence in Memphis, Tennessee before he was told he had to thin out the herd so to speak. They were dispersed to shelters throughout the country and Memphis ended up at the Ocean County Humane Society.

I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t looking for a dog. Even though I am a pet lover, we had two dogs in the past

as well as a couple cats. We were pet free and I was okay with that. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the responsibility of taking care of something else as I was doing only a mediocre job of taking care of myself. Still, situations in our lives required that we get a watchdog, something decent sized with a head full of teeth. Our daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exhaustive online search brought us to Ocean Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Human Society. Gloating is not an especially attractive trait but on the ride home, that is the only way I can describe the look on the faces of my wife, daughter and I swear, Memphis as well.

Some years later, Memphis proved he was up to the task of being a watchdog when he bit a man coming into our house.

Unfortunately, the man was invited into the house and was the flood damage claims agent from FEMA dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Fearing the incident would affect my claim, I apologized profusely, locked Memphis in a bedroom and quietly gave him a hearty â&#x20AC;&#x153;good boy.â&#x20AC;?

Hearing of the incident prompted female visitors to cautiously sidestep by him and the males to sheepishly cover their groin area resembling soccer players during a free kick at the goal.

I never considered myself a â&#x20AC;&#x153;dog person.â&#x20AC;? When I was living alone I always had cats. No, not like a 20 cats owner but always one. They didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother me, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother them. They required less care but offered a little more company than a pet rock. But Memphis has really woven himself into the fabric of my life. Now that I am fortunate enough to make my own schedule, I include Memphis in most of my duly appointed rounds as he sits between the seats of my van and constantly nudges my arm for a show of affection. If he is lucky, the errands include a run to the bank where the teller gives him a treat. Memphis is resting next to me as I write this column and will lie down next to me in front of the TV this evening.

He has come a long way since New Orleans and Memphis.

Ohâ&#x20AC;Śand we had a cat named Dakota but at least we have been to South Dakota.

“What Do The Holidays Mean to You?” Answered by Sixth Graders at Belhaven Middle School, Linwood For me, the holidays mean spending quality time with family and friends. It is not about the giant presents begging for attention under the tree, or the carefully cooked turkey whispering eat me in your ears. It is about realizing what you are grateful for and thanking your family for all they do for you take you to school put you to bed every night with a kiss, and cook you warm chocolate chip cookies whenever you’re feeling blue. It’s the small things to appreciate and forget the past.

My dog, Bailey, barks at my sisters and I because he wants to eat the wrapping paper, when we open our presents. The holidays to me, Is when you can cuddle in front of the fireplace, curled into a fuzzy blanket. And playing in the snow to make tiny little snowman’s around the yard. Overall to me the holidays is the best time of year. To spend time with your friends and family.

certain measure of overindulgence is anticipated during the holiday sea son. Rich foods and desserts are served, and parties are plentiful. However, those who plan to stick to their healthy eating plans can still enjoy tastes of the season without compromising their fi tness or dietary goals.

Many recipes can be made healthier with some simple substitutions, and that even includes decadent desserts.

Take, for example, "Wickedly Decadent Deep Chocolate Truffles" from "Low Fat for Life," (DK) by Sue Krietzman. This low-fat version of a high-fat classic will taste delicious without being too sinful.

Wickedly Decadent Deep Chocolate Truffles MAKES 24 • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate • 6 ounces very low-fat fromage frais • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 ounces semisweet chocolate, grated 1. Break the chocolate into a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Let it melt, stirring occasionally.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the fromage frais and sugar.

Whisk in the vanilla.

3. When the chocolate is melted and smooth, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Slowly

whisk the chocolate into the fromage frais mixture, using a rubber spatula to incorporate every bit of chocolate.

Cover with plastic wrap and chill for an hour.

4. Line a baking sheet with waxed paper. Scatter the grated chocolate on a plate. Scoop out the chilled chocolate mixture in teaspoonfuls, roll into balls, then roll the balls in the grated chocolate and put on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm.

5. Put the truffles in small paper cases. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.

There are lots of things you can do to boost your SEO, including starting a blog. When a blog generates fresh content regularly, search engines recognize that, and your page is more likely to appear closer to the top of a web search. This means more people will visit your blog and your website and learn about the services you provide.

Ultimately, this results in greater visibility for your business and an expanded potential to reach more clients.
