s Election Day grows closer, the No North Jersey Casino’s Coalition is getting bigger. South Jersey residents from all walks of life came together to share their reasons why they are voting “no.” Hundreds of local area workers and officials gathered to rally against the proposed North Jersey Casino Expansion.

“It’s not only important to defeat it, but to defeat it with multiple exclamation points, because the people who want to do this will come back again, and we have to show just how strong we are on this” said Congressman Frank LoBiondo.

“It’s a crucial vote for Atlantic City, and for all of South Jersey, I think.

Adding more casinos to North Jersey certainly is not going to be beneficial to this area, and I certainly don’t see how it’s going to benefit North Jersey as well,” said Frank Dougherty, owner of Dock’s Oyster House.

There are several fundamental misconceptions about Atlantic City.

Among these are that the casino industry is going out of business. This could not be further from the truth.

Since the closure of four casinos in 2014, and The Taj recently, the ca-

sino industry has “right sized” itself.

Industry profits in terms of Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) more than doubled in 2015 to their highest total since 2009. In response to the onslaught of additional out-of-state gaming capacity in the northeast, several Atlantic City casinos including Resorts, Borgata, Harrah’s, Tropicana, the Golden Nugget, Caesars and Bally’s have all invested in strategic improvements such as new restaurants, nightclubs, rooms, convention facilities, concept dining

and entertainment, and exterior improvements, resulting in all of these casinos thriving. The industry is now in a position to weather any remaining out-of-state expansion because, aside from one casino in Philadelphia, all of the new gaming facilities coming online in the next few years are in areas well beyond Atlantic City’s key feeder markets.

Without two new casinos in northern New Jersey, the casinos in Atlantic City will continue to invest in their properties, enhance their offerings and leverage the critical mass of eight casinos in one confined area.

Combined with the already existing non-gaming amenities in the City such as the Tanger Outlets, the Playground and other planned entertainment investments Atlantic City will regain its stature as the jewel of the eastern seaboard and one of New Jersey’s finest and most important assets.

“And we can disagree about Hillary and the Donald … but the one thing we’re united on is voting “No” on number one on “No North Jersey Casinos,” said Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian.

provides. Which is really saying something. Summertomatoes, eggplants and peppers are just now fading from memory, while fall’s colorful palette of greens, squash, potatoes, apples, pears and cabbage become readily available.

We always appreciate seeing how chefs work with those opportunities during Restaurant Week menu planning, and having thoroughly perused 2016’s list, here are a few suggestions.

We’ll begin at Clancy’s and a delightful-sounding app- Ariel’s famous hand-made beef empanada’s- a pair of savory Latino turnovers stuffed with olives, garlic, cilantro, diced onion, sauteed green peppers, ground beef and sweet chilies, deep fried and accompanied by sour cream. Another

winning starter is available from underrated full-service eatery Sal’s Cafe, house signature coal-fired wings, sided by caramelized onions and bread.

From the entree side, new comer Buon Appetito will serve an intriguing seasonal offering of pumpkin ravioli in rosa sauce. Another pleasant pasta comes from the kitchen at Greate Bay Country Club; mushroom ravioli with chicken, butternut squash, peas and toasted hazelnuts.

The venerable Crab Trap plans three outstanding entrees; grilled boneless pork tenderloin with braised apples over mashed sweet potatoes with cranberry demi, Parmesan crusted Georges Bank cod with braised spinach-lemon butterora jumbo bacon crab cake and cream corn puree.

Fitzpatrick’s Deli and Steak House has a similar trio; an eight-ounce lobster tail over asparagus quinoa risotto, a half rack of lamb sided by soybean and corn succotash or a six-ounce New York strip accompanied by honey bourbon glazed Brussels sprouts, caramelized onion sauce steak sauce and potato straws. Gregory’s presents perhaps the most unusual, inventive pairing; toasted sunflower-crusted salmon over sauteed kale finished with a pumpkin creme reduction.

sels, scallops, Andouille sausage and vegetables tossed in saffron Arborio rice. We loved our initial sampling from nascent taqueria El Tipico, and the week should provide a fine chance to make an economical introduction of your own. From the directory of desserts, a sticky bun bread pudding at bay fronting Doc’s Place caught our eye; served warm with ice cream, studded with nuts and raisins. Also worthy of mention, The Anchorage even offers a value-added extra course, RW diners receiving appetizer, soup or salad, entree and dessert.

A first-time Italian participant is Bay Avenue’s charming, Cape May-esque Buono Vita.

Finally, at Tavern by the Bay, you’ll be feted with a chance to sample the stirring cuisine of one of our very favorite shore chefs. Recently relocated to Somers Point, outspoken, Brit-born Paul Drew, formerly long-time Exec Chef for Philips’ Seafood empire at their Atlantic City outpost.

Hometown Hero: Mike Fiedor Early Days of the fire department

Mike Fiedor has been the chief of the Scullville Volunteer Fire Com-

pany for 9 years and a member for 33 years. Fiedor grew up in what he fondly describes as “Bird Land,” a neighborhood in the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township where the streets are named after birds. He graduated high school in 1972 and married his best friend Kathy in

1973. As a young dad, he witnessed a woods fire in 1982. It was then that he decided to apply to become a volunteer fireman. It was a decision that changed his life.

“It made me a better person. I used to be fast to react. It gave me

structure and made me think before I react,” said Fiedor. There are 54 active members and 30 auxiliary. “We are like a family and I love each and every one of them, past and present.”

The Scullville Volunteer Fire Company was first organized in 1934 and

Sandy flooding a second firehouse, just 3 miles west, was constructed in 1974 to meet the needs of the growing community. The Fire Company is best known though for its Haunted Hayrides at Flemings Junkyard, a perfect fundraising event for the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company. “Terror in the Junkyard” haunted hayride is a tradition in Egg Harbor Township. It runs every weekend in October and has grown significantly in the 15 years since it began. Community partnerships have developed with the Police Explorers, Egg Harbor Township High School Key Club, Egg Harbor Township Hockey Club, the Somers Point Volunteer Fire Company and the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company. Over 150 volunteers come together to make it the success that it is.

In 2013, a parent came to Fiedor and requested a sensory friendly hayride be created so that their child with autism could also participate in the event. Fiedor embraced the idea and welcomed all families with special needs. He sets aside a special early-evening time for the Sensory Friendly Hayride so the families come out before it opens to the public.

There are no lines, loud sounds or flashing lights. Actors are in costume but rather than popping out to scare the visitors, they smile and wave at them. “It’s about family,” says Fiedor “creating an opportunity for all families to come out and have some holiday fun together.”

The annual fundraiser helps with the high cost of gear and equipment for the firefighters. It also helped to purchase the “Gator,” Marine 3, the first and only fire-fighter boat in Atlantic County. It also serves as a rescue boat. It can maneuver in shallow water and pump 1500 gallons of water per minute. “This is critical for us,” says Fiedor “because we have a lot of water here, including 14 miles of river, Seaview Harbor and many marinas, and not a lot of hydrants.”

Four years ago, Hurricane Sandy dealt a devastating blow to the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company. ”There was water as far as my eye could see.

There was nothing I could do. It was too late,” recounts Fiedor. “We were never prepared for something like Sandy. Now we will always prepared.

We learned from Sandy.” Although Hurricane Matthew did not impact

our area significantly, they were prepared, sandbagging and moving trucks to higher ground just in case.

iming is everything.

We met in college and Bob was 21 years old when he began his newspaper career in Atlantic County.

An Ocean City summer local and surfer, Bob was thrilled to build his career, home and family in the area he loved. He spent 15 years at the Press of Atlantic City, then 9 years at the Current.

Our family grew through the years. We were blessed with 3 beautiful children and a home in Egg Harbor Township.

As the economy changed both nationally and locally, things began to change in the industry. Large corporate media companies bought up much of the Atlantic County media, including the daily paper and the two larger weeklies.

From this, the idea of Shore Local was born: a locally owned, homegrown publication that focuses on the people, the places and events in Atlantic County, Ocean City and Upper Township. We had a vision to build a local business that spotlights and promotes local businesses.

Ocean City Achieves Sustainable Jersey Silver-Level Certification

O

cean City, NJ–Sustainable Jersey representatives announced today that Ocean Cityhas met the rigorous requirements to achieve Sustainable Jersey certification. Ocean City is one of only 25 New Jersey municipalities that have attained certification at the silver-level in 2016. Ocean City will be honored at the Sustainable Jersey Awards Luncheonon Tuesday, Nov. 15in Atlantic City.

“We feel blessed in Ocean City to live in such a beautiful place, and the protection of our environment and resources is vitally important,” Ocean City Mayor Jay A. Gillian said. “We’re proud to have achieved Silver-Level Certification and thankful for Sustainable Jersey’s continued mission.”

To become Sustainable Jersey certified at the silver-level, Ocean City submitted documentation to show it had completed a balance of the required sustainability actions, meeting a minimum of 350 action points. In addition to reaching 350 points, each community had to create a green team and select at least three out of eleven priority action options. Ocean City did five of the 11 priority actions by completing: 1) a fleet inventory, 2) municipal carbon footprint, 3) sustainable land use pledge, 4) natural

resource inventory, and 5) prescription drug safety and disposal.

“Sustainable Jersey is incredibly proud of the 74 New Jersey towns that achieved certification this year,” said Donna Drewes, co-director of Sustainable Jersey. “The 198 Sustainable Jersey certified towns demonstrate leadership and are a testament to how much we can accomplish toward the long-term goal of a sustainable New Jersey.”

Certified towns excelled in areas such as improving energy efficiency and health and wellness, reducing waste, sustaining local economies, protecting natural resources and advancing the arts. “Collectively the 440 participating Sustainable Jersey towns are a powerful force in New Jersey,” said Randall Solomon, co-director of Sustainable Jersey.

About Sustainable Jersey Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs. Currently, 78 percent, or 440 of New Jersey’s 565 municipalities are participating in the municipal certification program and 208 school districts and 516 schools are participating in the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification program.

Presidential Visits to the Jersey Shore

A

tlantic City is getting plenty of national attention, for good or bad, due to Donald Trump’s business dealings here. Hillary made a campaign stop here speaking in front of the closed Trump Plaza in July. The region’s connection to the U.S. Presidents goes back a long way.

The earliest recorded visit was 1855, when president Franklin Peirce came to Congress Hall in Cape May. He was the first of five to enjoy a cool sea breeze in America’s first seashore resort.

Atlantic City was booming just 20 years later and in July of 1874 crowds were lining up on Atlantic Avenue for the resort’s first Presidential guest. American flags and decorative bunting adorned nearly every lamp post on Absecon Island.

A big brass band gathered at the train station, waiting for the special railroad car to pull in. Ulysses S Grant was about to arrive.

In the late 1860s and early 1870s, railroad companies and business leaders invited America’s leaders to Atlantic City. The city picked up the tab for the VIPs, providing free transportation to and from the resort. Businessmen extended every possible courtesy to ensure their happiness. They knew it was a smart investment- each visit created national headlines and positive publicity for the young seaside resort.

Soon after Grant’s appearance, Atlantic City became a favorite place among presidents. The resort

Owned by the Camden and Atlantic Railroad, it was the resort’s first public lodging and the country’s largest, with more than six hundred rooms and grounds covering fourteen acres. But development in the city surged ahead, and by 1900 the hotel was demolished to make room for other projects. hosted 16 including Warren Harding, Herbert Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, William Taft, Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower. Many presidents also played golf at the Seaview Country Club in Galloway.

In the presidential campaign of

1960, then-Sen. John F. Kennedy made his way along Tilton Road in an open-car motorcade that made its way along Tilton Road.

Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated for a full term at the 1964 Democratic Convention at Boardwalk Hall.

But unlike Grant’s visit, which helped put Atlantic City on the map, the Democratic Convention created bad press for the resort, with reports of a rundown city.

Reagan made a 1984 campaign stop in Hammonton to 30,000 flag-waving supporters. Bill and Hillary Clinton and Hillary attended a birthday party in Ventnor for Chelsea Clinton’s mother-in-law in 2012. Later that year, President Obama toured Brigantine to witness the damage of Super Storm Sandy. The first lady came to newly opened Revel to see a Beyonce show. Ironically, the performer took over the Presidential Suite, relegating Michelle Obama and her daughters to another suite.

A quote by President Theodore Roosevelt goes beyond what a marketing firm could come up with: “A man would not be a good American citizen,” Roosevelt once said. “If he did not know of Atlantic City.”

Bruce and the President

t was mid-September 1984 and Hammonton was buzzing. President Ronald Reagan was coming to town. The incumbent was making a campaign speech in a race against Democrat and former vice president, Walter Mondale.

The town had gone all out for Reagan’s visit. Patriotic bunting decorated the buildings and a local band with cheerleaders was in place on the outdoor stage.A giant American flag filled a large wall behind where Reagan would speak. A banner read: “America: Prouder, Stronger & Better.” A crowd of more than 30,000 had come out in Hammonton to hear Reagan, many of them waving hand-held American flags.

Ronald Reagan generally had optimistic and upbeat things to say in his speeches, and his remarks in Hammonton that day were no different. This time, however, in part of his speech, he mentioned a popular rock and roll singer known to many in New Jersey and elsewhere.

“America’s future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts,” President Reagan said in his speech. “It rests in the message of hope in songs so many young

Americans admire: New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. And helping you make those dreams come true is what this job of mine is all about.”

Bruce Springsteen at the time was about as popular as a rock ‘n roll singer could be, and it certainly couldn’t hurt a politician to be identified with that kind of popularity. Springsteen had a very successful album, Born in the U.S.A., with a popular song of the same name. The album had been released in June 1984 and was No.1 on the Billboard album chart by July, remaining on the chart for 139 weeks. It would also spawn seven Top-10 hit singles and become one of the best-selling albums of all time over 15 million copies sold in the U.S. It was a monster hit, as was its title song, “Born in the U.S.A.” Springsteen and his band were touring the country with their concerts selling out stadiums.

President Reagan’s 1984 reelection campaign was in full stride at the time.

George Will, a conservative Republican and columnist for The Washington Post had attended one of Springsteen’s Washington DC performances at the invitation of Springsteen’s drummer, Max Weinberg and his wife Rebecca. In Will’s column, which ran in many papers across the country, he

praised Springsteen as an exemplar of classic American values. Wrote Will, in part:“I have not got a clue about Springsteen’s politics, if any, but flags get waved at his concerts while he sings songs about hard times. He is no whiner, and the recitation of closed factories and other problems always seems punctuated by a grand, cheerful affirmation: ‘Born in the U.S.A.!’ George Will had some friends and connections in the Reagan White House. He thought that Springsteen might endorse Reagan (not knowing that Springsteen was very much a liberal and thus did not support Reagan at all), and got the notion pushed up to high-level Reagan advisors. Those staffers made inquiries to Springsteen’s management which were politely rebuffed.

f you’re like me, Election Day can’t come soon enough. It’s safe to say that you are either in the A, B or C Camp or maybe, none of the above. Maybe you’re passionate, over the top interested and engaged or you couldn’t care less. The reality is, wherever you fall in the politically engaged spectrum, I’ve got some positive news for you no matter who wins.

2. Run for Office - Of course you’re not going to run for President of The United States. But you could run for a position on your condo association or community governing board or a charitable board of directors or committee. “I’m going to do my best to make this season as great as I possibly can for your child.” Street Hockey Coach Scott Friedman

S

cott Friedman’s sense of humor comes in handy with his first-year coaching for Penguin Street Hockey. He laughs as he describes himself as a player “I was mostly a goalie, so that probably tells you something.”Scott grew up in Medford Lakes, NJ and tells the story of growing up and playing hockey: “We had ice on the lakes in the winter.

I was never a good skater, though. We played street hockey in our driveway, and dented the aluminum siding on our house above the garage. My dad wasn’t too pleased with that. I was a catcher in baseball, so it was natural that I gravitated towards being a goalie in hockey” and the rest was history.

He is a real estate agent by day and a stand-up comedian by night.

When asked why he decided to make the leap from watching his only daughter, Samantha (Sammi), play for the first-time last year to coaching this year he stated, “I’m coaching this year because the coaches last year made it fun for her. It was her first year playing.

She was theyoungest and shortest girl in the division, and never played a sport before. She was hit by shots in her first game that made her cry. On top of that the cold weathermade her toes and fingers hurt.” Scott and his wife, Katherine, (Kat), later found out that Sammi has weather related asthma. He felt that Sammi had “every reason in the world to not want to come back this year.” Scott credits Samantha’s newly found toughness... and, the environment created by Coach Jeremy Baretta and Ass’t Coach Eric Ford. He really feels those two Coaches were what had kept her looking forward to each game and, without a second thought, she wanted to come back this year.” Scott continued, so while he is coaching this year, the most important thing he wants to do is see that “the kids have fun while working towards that goal.”

Last year there were 5 girls on the team, and Scott says that, “occasionally Coach Baretta would roll out his, ‘pony tail line’”: playing all the girls at once but most of the time he mixed everyone up based on ability.This year, with Scott now coaching, he in fact has his own “pony tail line-up” with Sammi, Audrey and Lily all on his team.

This year there are a total of 6 teams with 13 kids on each team. Skill levels range from rookie to 7 years of playing experience. There’s a younger league: The division that Scott

is coaching has 1-2 games a week: Monday evenings and/or Saturdays.

The season is about 3 months long and runs mid-November to February.

When his daughter Sammi re-enrolled this fall for another go at Hockey she and her Mom Kat, Friedman decided to recruit others. They asked girlfriends Lily and Audrey to join hockey. They had never played before and knew nothing about the sport.

Being open-minded they jumped in head first. Audrey, 7, a second grader at Northfield Community School was excited about it. Audrey, a red belt in Karate, knew the assistant Coach

Brad and his son Jake from Karate class already. And since she knew Sammi and her Mom she felt a level of comfort to try something new. She said happily, “Sammi said she really had a good time, so I figured let’s do it together!” Audrey also liked the idea that on the nights of practices that family could come watch. There are bleachers set up and it is right near a playground close to Mainland High School. Alot of parents sat in the grass and watched their children who weren’t practicing hockey play in the playground (siblings) while the other sibling was practicing in the rink. It was a very social affair.

Scott says that the league is also unique in that, “this is a developmental league where the youngest kids in the division are in first grade, and they’re playing on the same rink as 4th graders.

There are a lot of kids in this division with zero or one year of experience.”

So, it is imperative to Scott, as a Coach, and as a parent (and a person), that his belief is set as a standard to the parents from the get-go.

He sent an email out to the parents of all the players before the first practice stating, “I believe having fun, learning the positions/game, learning to play on a team, doing your best every time you’re out there, and sportsmanship are the most important factors.” and “We are a team, and we count on each other” When asked, as a Coach, what his personal goal is, Scott said, “My goal is that they want to come back and play next year”He continued with, “The sole reason Sammi (his daughter and one of the 3 girls on the team), is back this year is because her coaches made it fun for her last year. And whether they win or lose, I want them to have always done their best.”

Again, with his sense of humor he continued, “I’m 45 with bad feet and knees, so after practice I felt sore”.He added, “with work and homework and play dates and dance and cheer, this is a time for me to be with Sammi...along with 12 other kids.When I’m coaching, I feel like I can make a difference for these kids. I believe that all the kids will get something from this, whether it’s learning how to play, or play better, learning how to work as a team, or just having a good time.”

he Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC) has elected Dick Shepherd as the new president of the 103-year-old organization.

Dick Shepherd, new Ocean City Fishing Club president A resident of Buck County’s Southampton, PA, and Wildwood, NJ, Shepherd has been a club member for the past 12 years. During that time he has served as club vice president, trustee, and a member of the membership committee.

An avid angler and woodworker, Shepherd has fished the entire New Jersey coast and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. But he says the greatest enjoyment for him and his wife Barbara “is spending time with our children and grandchildren who, fortunately, all live nearby.”

OCFC’s new chief executive retired from the Philadelphia Electric Company after three decades of service. He then launched the Para Transit Service for the Central Bucks Rescue Unit in Doylestown, PA. It assists individuals in getting to and from medical appointments when an ambulance is not necessary. He is also a member of the Elks Club of Greater North Wildwood and the Ocean City Beach Buggy Association.

Shepherd said he plans to continue the club’s strong community relations efforts, including its annual Boys and Girls Surf Fishing and Invitational Tournaments, a scholarship program for graduating seniors at Ocean City High School, and Open Houses in conjunction with the city’s Family Nights on the Boardwalk.

He succeeds Augie Conte, Jr., of Cherry Hill and Ocean City.

Also elected were Frank Pizzutilla, of Ocean City, 1st first vice president; Joe Hughes, of Erial, NJ, 2nd vice president; and trustees William Jensen, of Audubon, NJ, and Ocean City, and Augie Conte III, of Ocean City.

Margaret Feil, of Ocean View, and Bob Roth, of Ocean City, were re-elected club secretary and financial secretary, respectively.

The Ocean City Fishing Club is the oldest, continuously operating fishing club in the nation.

Joe’s Garden Center was originated in 1956 by Joe Fichetola and his mother, Mary Fichetola. Joe and his sister, Anita, took over the family business in 1959. Anita began baking pies and did not stop for nearly 50 years.

“The secret is in the crust recipe and fresh filling,” says Anita Fichetola. Local residents counted on Joe’s Garden Center to supply their mouthwatering pies, but one day the pies stopped coming. In recent years due to her husband’s illness, Anita hung up her oven mitts.

eterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday.

Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives.

Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts. ● According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female. ● California, Texas and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more. ● Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Veterans serve in times of war and peace. ● The word "veteran" comes from the Old English language and means "old, experienced soldier." The first use of the word was documented in 1789. ● Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male

veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2 percent. ● Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. ● Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978. ● An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier." A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave.

Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America's brave soldiers.

The Upside of Downsizing

I

n case you haven’t noticed, there is a downsizing movement going on. Baby boomers like my wife and I have been empty nesters for quite a few years and while our last home was not palatial by most standards, we had the opportunity to move into our son’s in-law’s suite. This was a step down from about 1700 square feet to about 1100. Not exactly a “tiny house” but less than we have been used to. While our house was quite manageable, this move was a step towards our goal of packing what we can into a van or small RV and hitting the road for an extended length of time perhaps even a year or so. When our children were young, we packed them into a rented van, drove to Wyoming stopping to camp along the way.

We camped a few days in South Dakota before moving on to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

We were on the road for three weeks and I can tell you that no photos, books or videos can prepare you for the landscapes that unfold before you when you visit such locations. We experienced such diversity it our country’s geography and people that the trip left an indelible mark on us as well as the yearning to experience more of it. Thus began the process of whittling down our possessions. There are books and information online about decluttering which I have glossed over. Some of it is pretty basic and common sense. The rest of it, apparently doesn’t apply to me. I have to say that my wife is not as attached to possessions as I am and although I don’t believe I am quite in need of an intervention there are some areas in which I am unyielding. I am a photographer and have been for decades. This means I have big Tupperware containers, shoeboxes, albums and binders containing photos, negatives, slides and CD’s, framed and canvas prints. Included in those are photos I inherited from my

parents and grandparents. There is to be no discussion on this matter although I am sure at some point years down the road most of it will be discarded. Books. I have too many books. Not too many for most book lovers but too many for someone who is trying lighten their footprint. They are not as easy to get rid of as one might think. Somehow to me, throwing them in the trash does not seem right. They are the result of someone’s creative process and have brought me hours of pleasure, temporarily giving me respite from the world outside. Having them around gives me some measure of contentment and are reminders of the literary voyages I have taken. I suppose I can gradually piece them out to local libraries someday. Someday. Then there is my collection of t-shirts. There are trunks of them even after I threw some out after a rigorous editing process. This has been a bone of contention between my wife and I but for now we are participating in a cease fire over the subject. More about my t-shirts in a subsequent column.

I don’t think there will be space in our cross country vehicle for a “junk drawer.” I believe most of our readers must have one. Mine is the top drawer of my dresser. Some of the items fall into the category of “you never know when I might need this again.” Here is a short accounting of some of the items: a golf ball monogrammer. I was losing golf balls faster than I could monogram them. A case for a flip phone, a flip phone, pen refills for long lost pens, rolls of coins, my classic iPod which doesn’t work, medals from rowing races, old watches that I will get fixed, two old hard drives that I am too paranoid to put in the trash, a taser I received as a gift, greeting cards I wanted to keep, my lifeguard whistle and allen wrenches for my 29 year old son’s Rollerblades wherever they are. Add to this a smattering of other odds and ends. I guess I can part with some of these things. All in all, I think I have the right mindset. I am not bringing anymore stuff into our living space and my culling of possessions is an ongoing process. As time goes on, my connection with some things is waning and I am parting with them gradually. I don’t know if I’ll get to the optimum level of minimalism before hitting the road but I am moving forward. I did manage to get rid of about 12 years of old tax returns.

That’s pretty good, right?

1 1-pound lean flank steak, trimmed 1/2 teaspoon ancho or regular chili powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 16-ounce tube fat-free polenta, cut into 12 slices 11/2 cups fresh or thawed frozen corn kernels 1 red bell pepper, chopped

1/2 red onion, chopped 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1. Spray ridged grill pan with nonstick spray and set over medium-high heat.

Sprinkle steak with chili powder and salt. Place steak in pan and cook until an instant-read thermometer inserted into side of steak registers 145 F for medium, about 5 minutes on each side. Transfer steak to cutting board and let stand 5 minutes. Cut on a diagonal into 16 slices.

2. Meanwhile, spray boiler rack with nonstick spray and preheat boiler. Arrange slices of polenta on rack and broil 5 inches from heat until crispy and heated through, about 2 minutes on each side.

Do it faster: To neatly and quickly remove the kernels from an ear of corn, place a bowl in the sink, stand the corn on end inside the bowl, and cut off the kernels with a knife. Any fly-away kernels will end up in the sink.

November: A Month of Change

average, we see about 3.25 inches of rain in November, but that can vary depending on the year. Parts of New Jersey are in drought this year so depending on the weather patterns, we may not see much precipitation this month, especially early. Last year we were affected by a Nor Easter that bought several inches of rain to the area. In terms of snow, the average first snow for the area occurs in mid to late December, however snow cannot be ruled out for the month of November. The earliest snowfall on record for Atlantic City occurred on November 5th, 1973 when a trace of snow fell that day. The average snowfall amounts for our area for the year is around sixteen inches.

There are some years that we can get much more than that, possibly double that amount. There are also have been years that we see little to snow accumulation.

I consider November a month of change. This month brings an end to Daylight Savings, Election Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving take place along with big changes to the weather. The average high temperature will fall from 61 degrees to 51 degrees by the end of the month. On some days temperatures may approach 70 degrees and feel like spring but on other days it will be nasty, raw, damp, and wet along with temperatures in the 50's all day. The first freeze of the season occurs in November as the growing season comes to an end. The average low temperature falls from 41 to 31 degrees by the end of the month, thus making a freezeevery night.

Precipitation-wise November is on average one of the drier months of the year, however that can change quickly if a Nor Easter or a slow moving cold front affects our area. On

Your Platform

Everybody has a platform, but not everyone knows it. A platform is a place of projection—that’s actually my definition. When you think about where you stand, then you can think about what you stand for and how you project that stance. You see, your place of projection is any place where your life takes on a reflection. Thus, your platform is everywhere you go and everything you do. It projects and reflects what is important to you: your priorities; your plans; your purpose.

You may not look at your vocation or even your recreation as a platform, but that’s because you may not realize how every situation can be used as an opportunity for impact. Whether it’s of the mundane or something birthed from pain, the platform under you is the plan God has given you.

So the question remains, “How are you using your platform?”

I often think about my platform and the messages that are projected on a daily basis. From social media to

how I conduct myself in social settings, and from public performance to behavior done in private. If we desire to have friends or followers, than we ought to take seriously the responsibility to be a friend and a leader. Both positions involve projection.

So the question remains, “How are you using your platform?”

I once was a pro soccer player. I, not too long ago, was also once a prisoner. Now, however, I am an author

and instigator and a Student Ministry Team leader. Yet every single place I have been or will be is a platform that God has chosen for me, that I may be an influencer for Him. No matter your career choice, you can still choose to turn your career into your calling and be God’s agent in that workplace. There are people around you who need to see what the reflection of hope looks like through your countenance. There are

NBA Preview

he 2016-17 NBA season, underway as of October 25th,promises to be filled with dramatic storylines.Nowhere is that truer than in Philadelphia 76ers territory.

After years of futility awaiting “The Process” this year’s team looks to finally begin rebuilding a storied NBA franchise.

Long-awaited Joel Embiid has been nothing short of spectacular thus far, albeit with small sample size, playing limited minutes.He does demonstrate traits of elite athleticism, shooting acumen and dominating size reminiscent of Hall of Famer and twice-NBA champ Hakeem Olajuwon. Which makes sense;the Cameroon native has spent considerable time during his lengthy recovery process working with Olajuwon at the Nigerian big man’s training facility in Houston.

Another fascinating addition is Croatianwingman Dario Saric. Despite being nearly seven feet tall, Saricbrings extraordinary vision, passing and shooting talents,the latter a skill-set disproportionately valued in today’s professional game.

And then of course, there’s Ben Simmons.The teenage Australian wunderkind suffered a foot fracture early in preseason

and will likely be unavailable until midseason.However, throughout the NBA’s summer rookie league and his first preseason playin a Sixers uniform, Simmons looked to be everything advertised, perhaps more. During summer play, the ball-handling, hard-bodied forwardresembled a grown man playing with smaller and much less talented children. However, considering the team’s unfortunate history with injured big men- remember Roy Hinson, Jeff Rulandand Matt Geigere - fans will understandably be holding their collective breaths until at he returns.

The other issue remaining for the coaching staff is how to incorporate this plethora of big guys- throw in defensive wizard Nerlens Noel and offensively-gifted Jahlil Okafor to the mix, once both return from nagging injuries- into a coherent squad.

Most NBA insiders speculate that one of them will be traded sometime this season.

We hope that isn’t the case, and respectfully disagree with popular opinion.

Most of that confidence rests with Simmons.In fact, we see a once-in-a-generation transcendent talent capable of almost-singlehandedly reestablishing low-post scoring as a top offensive prioritywhat has become a 3-point-shoot-

ing-gone-mad NBA. Until his return, the team will depend on a trio of steady point guards in second-year man T.J. McConnell, veteran Spaniard Sergio Rodriguez and eventually, injured free-agent Jerryd Bayless.

The rest of the league has also witnessed a virtually-unprecedented offseason of player movement. At the forefront was the departure of four-time scoring champ Kevin Durant from Oklahoma City to the already-glittery Golden State Warriors.We still firmly believe the Warriors were a dubious Draymond Green suspension away from repeating as champs last year.

(Can you say ‘conspiracy?’) Now they’ve added the finest overall player from the Western Conference runner-up. Admittedly, this does nothing to address their Achilles Heelshortcoming; pillow-soft interior play, made even more glaring by the departure of solid defenders Andrew Bogutand Harrison Barnes, now members of the Dallas Mavericks.

Provided the Warriors can find a way to sufficiently share one ball, we still see only the Spurs and possibly the Thunder

challenging them, despitea loaded Western Conference.

The East looks to be decidedly more mediocre, and up for grabs.

While the champion Cavs remain still dangerous, their success hinges entirely on the ability of two players- LeBron James and Kyrie Irving- to remain healthy.

We just don’t see James being able to extract many more seasons of grinding greatness out of his imposing, yet aging physique.Remember, this will be James’ fifteenth NBA campaign, and hehas never missed more than twenty games in any year.Throw in lengthy, annual playoff runs plus intense, regular international competition and you’re talking massive mileage on his hulking frame.

As for Irving, will he continue as the deadly, dominant, clutch scorer we saw in last year’s Finals, or return to his prior incarnation;oft-injured, a poor decision-maker who never met a shot he didn’t like and was exploited on defense?

The East’s best story line is easily the New York Knicks.Adding shooting guard Derrick Rose, center Joakim Noah and playmaker Brandon Jennings to their mix, along withveteran scoring machine Carmelo Anthony and sophomore, ‘stretch four’phenom Kristaps Porzingis, could be a formula for deep playoff success.

As for the 76ers, we see a rapidly-improving team winning 28-35games, possibly squeezing into the postseason as a number eight seed in the scrawny East.

ello everybody. When I last wrote, the Eagles were 3-0 and it looked like this team was getting ready for a very special season. Since then, things have changed a little bit. In my opinion the bye week could not have come at a worse time for the Birds. They just came off a masterful performance against one of the best teams in football; the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The bye week killed all the momentum the Eagles had. The week after the bye, The Eagles came out flat especially on defense against Detroit. It was a game that they could have won, but the defense allowed three first half touchdowns. Carson Wentz came back in the second half but the rally fell short thanks to many penalties. The same thing happened against the Washington Redskins the following week. They fell behind early, but a late rally fell short. Execution on both offense and defense has been a problem so far this season, especially coming from the wide receivers. Carson Wentz is doing his best with what he has, but his receivers are barely open and he has to throw the ball in a perfect spot. Things changed last week when Minnesota came to town and the Eagles had a perfect game plan for Sam Bradford and the rest of the Vikings team.

The defense showed up ready to attack and that led to an uncomfortable day for Bradford and a 21-10 Eagles win.

The defense has to continue to play like it did against the Vikings. Despite their struggles against Detroit and Washington, this team has allowed only one second half touchdown all year.

The core of this defense has been together for a few years but has not had the proper coaching to show they can play to their abilities until this season.

Jim Schwartz is the key to whether this team will succeed on the defensive side of the football. Some people may question his wide nine scheme but his defense consistently ranks among the NFL's best every season.

Head Coach Doug Pederson has done a great job in showing confidence that Carson Wentz can get the job done.

He has bought him along slowly in terms of the playbook and not letting him get totally exposed as a rookie. This west coast style offense seems to be perfect for this team. Many short throws, screen passes and low risk plays over the middle.

The Eagles have a tough schedule ahead with games against Green Bay, Atlanta, Seattle, Cincinnati along with their divisional opponents. I think this club can win the NFC East but only time will tell. Nobody expected the Eagles to do much this year, but seeing this team succeed shows that this organization has a very promising future.

ello readers! My name is Maria Provenzano and I am the founder of The Elegant Root, an independent creative agency specializing in content development and brand enrichment for individuals and businesses. This means I do lots of things with words, from editing to content creation to web design, with the goal of helping small businesses better deliver their vision to their intended audiences. Ultimately, this comes down to effective communication: How can I use words to get the point across? Here are some tips to keep in mind when crafting your message.

1.) Free-write. Free-writing is an exercise designed to wake up your inspiration, and it’s a great place to start when you think you don’t have anything to say. Bonus: it’s simple and it can be fun! Set aside a specific amount of time for yourself and commit to writing the entire time. If you want to stop and you don’t think you’re coming up with any good ideas, write about that. The idea is to get your hands moving and your brain thinking. A successful free-writing session is not measured by the ideas you generate while you write. It is measured by what you are primed to create afterward.

2.) Don’t make yourself start at the beginning. I've postponed a lot of projects for longer than necessary because I was trying to figure out how to begin. There’s no such thing as a perfect beginning, and even if you think you’ve found one, it will likely change as the remainder of your piece continues to evolve. It doesn’t matter where you begin. Just start somewhere. You create all of the pieces, and you get to move them around any way you choose.

3.) Get rid of what you don’t need. Lighten your load, and don’t over-burden your readers. Words like “personally” and phrases like “in my opinion” are often unnecessary and cumbersome. If we’re reading

something you wrote, we know it’s your opinion. Avoid too many fancy descriptors, too. It can be tempting to use a bunch of juicy adjectives (sensational! streamlined! incandescent!), but when we use extra words to express our opinion about a product or service, rather than essentially conveying what the product or service actually is, we’re missing an opportunity for authentic communication. The better course is to choose just those words that will make a genuine impact. If you’re not sure what those are, ask for a second opinion.

4.) Grammar and punctuation are important. After you've gotten your ideas out on paper (or on your computer screen), edit for proper grammar and punctuation. Grammar and punctuation exist as tools to allow us to communicate more clearly with each other, and it’s vital that we’re using them properly if we want our readers to hear what we have to say.

If proofreading isn’t your strong suit, enlist a friend or colleague to help you out.

5.) Your voice matters. Fact: No one else on this planet sees things the way you do and your perspective is a gift. Don't silence yourself for fear of rejection, don't make yourself wrong, and don't aim for perfection. Perfection isn't real, and a lot of amazing and important ideas have disappeared in the pursuit of it.

Instead, strive for authenticity. What you’ll gain as a result is your own voice, and that is much more valuable.

The world needs less noise and more originality. Don’t wait until it’s perfect or until you’re ready. It won’t be, you won’t be. Share your story.
