Information overload is the world we live in!

It's like a creature (from the black lagoon) that has been growing in the "cloud" since the internet’s beginnings. The bigger it gets, the more information there is. The flood of information that comes at me daily, via my phone, seems to produce more pain than gain. It’s like an incoming tidal wave of e-mails, texts, and social media feeds. A vast ocean of information, I feel compelled to view in order to keep up with my life.

Everything is at our fingertips. Our phones have become the remote control for our lives. On one hand, I love it!

Everything is easier and quicker. We can find out anything quickly. The dilemma though is we are getting TOO much information and we have to spend all the time we saved ourselves, weeding through it to try to determine what is really useful.

Sometimes it's hard to know

which app or information to believe.

Bob and I ran into that dilemma recently when we went on a road trip to Rowan University. I plugged in the address to Google and it directed us in a way that didn't align with Bob's knowledge of the route to Glassboro. We debated, (okay, argued in the car) and it turned out Google was right.

The event address was at a satellite campus.

Sometimes it's hard to put all our faith in technology. We have all heard the horror stories or experienced some GPS fails of our own, especially in the early years when it was still evolving.

Love it or hate it, technology and an abundance of information is here to stay. Picking and choosing the information is the key.

Ultimately my Dad will master Google Maps. I hope he does not ask about Tic Tok. If he does, I’ll need to ask my kids.

There’s a weather app for that…but user beware!

W

hen will the thunderstorms pop up tomorrow afternoon? What's the best beach day this week? Can I get 18 holes in before the rain? Each summer here at the South Jersey shore, these are questions that your favorite broadcast meteorologist hopefully answers in every weathercast.

But just like everything else today, there's also an app for that. In fact, there are actually hundreds of weather apps available for download on your smartphone.

Many are free and instantly ready to be your personal pocket forecaster. Others require either a one-time or annual payment. And there's an app for just about every weather circumstance, from severe weather alerts and radars to hour-byhour forecasts for your backyard.

So as a meteorologist, am I fearful for my job security? After all, other jobs

have fallen victim to technology. And meteorologists don't exactly have a clean track record either. Weather forecasting is an inexact science, something we are constantly reminded of via email, social media, or in person when a fickle South Jersey forecast goes awry. The short answer is no, even though admittedly I myself have about 20 weather apps downloaded to my phone.

The longer answer starts something like this: weather apps are a valuable supplemental tool in being "weather-wise." For instance, having severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings delivered to your phone has immense value. So does having a lightning tracker app if you spend a lot of time outdoors, like golfers, fishermen, and lifeguards. However, all the apps in the world can't equate to a meteorologist, or a human forecaster, someone who lives and forecasts in your area.

Sure, I may be slightly biased, as I am a local meteorologist, one trying to compete in the increasingly competitive weather market. But I'm also a scientist who tries to look at any weather forecast objectively, even computer generated ones. And honestly, that's what many apps offer you, a forecast based on one computer model, or perhaps a blend of several models. If that model

or model blend is incorrect, then the forecast the app spits out will likewise be incorrect as well.

I think the most common instance I often run across to properly illustrate this is the popular hour-by-hour forecasts that some of the most popular weather apps offer. Simply open the app, and it will tell you precisely what the temperature, wind, and weather will be at 3pm the next afternoon for example, precisely when one app user may be getting married, or another plans on hitting the boardwalk. If that particular app shows a thunderstorm icon for 3pm that day, I've actually had people contact me to see if it was indeed true. Or worse yet, I've heard of others adjusting their plans to best fit the app's forecast for dry weather.

I've been a meteorologist for 23 years, and I'll be blunt in telling you that it's difficult to forecast a thunderstorm to the exact hour it will hit the day of, and sometimes even the afternoon of, let alone one or more days out. Sure, I am comfortable, and usually fairly accurate, in providing time ranges, like 3-6pm for instance, when thunderstorms are most likely. But a precise hour? No, meteorology hasn't come that far yet, despite big forecast strides over the last few decades.

And that's what you get from a meteorologist, a human forecaster who weighs all the computer model guidance, biases, and trends. You get someone who will convey certainty and uncertainty in any given forecast, and express how much confidence a prediction has behind it. And you get someone with local knowledge, as living in the region you forecast for is invaluable.

The longer you forecast for a particular area, the more you understand weather

patterns, microclimates, and localized effects that no one computer model or app can account for.

Don't get me wrong. Technology is a wonderful thing (most of the time), and the evolution of weather apps helps keep more people prepared and ahead of the storm, by having access to the latest information in the palm of your hand. Meteorologists have always strived to reach the most number of people possible, especially ahead of life-threatening weather events, like hurricanes or tornadoes for instance.

And apps have helped us to do just that, more than any other recent innovation in technology.

But whether you have just one app you rely on or two dozen, use caution.

Know what you are looking at, and remember that trust in a weather app should never be on the same level as trust in a human forecaster. I know that for many of my viewers, trust is not easily earned, and sometimes takes years or even decades (and few blown forecasts) to finally achieve. Do I think meteorologists will always be needed? Yes I do. But I also think apps can be a useful tool in our common goal of weather readiness and awareness.

New ferry under consideration for Delaware crossing But some say it’s time to talk about a bridge

t’s been almost three years since the ferry MV Twin Capes sank about 30 miles from shore, with no one on board and no loss of life.

The 320-foot ship was intentionally sunk to become an artificial reef, after making a regular run across the

Delaware Bay from 1975 until 2011.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the ferry service between Cape May and Lewes, Del., had tried unsuccessfully to sell the vessel before deciding to scuttle it. Proponents of artificial reefs say they provide habitat for numerous varieties of sea life, including species important to the commercial and

recreational fishing industries. Subway cars, retired navy destroyers and more have been added to the reefs.

The DRBA has not had much luck selling second-hand ferries. The MV Cape May, reportedly purchased in 1985 for $14.5 million and remodeled in 1998 for an additional $20 million, was sold in 2013 to be used as a barge for a reported price of $750,000.

The ferry service is now looking to buy a new vessel. Earlier this year, the DRBA announced that it had hired Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), LLC of Seattle, Washington, a naval architecture/marine engineering firm, to lead a team of consultants working on a design concept for a new vessel.

“EBDG’s first task is to analyze the findings and results of the 2008 Marine Master Plan, conduct a thorough assessment of our existing ferry vessels, and provide an evaluation of future vessel needs,” said Heath Gehrke, director of ferry operations, in a prepared statement.

document – including the conceptual design of a new vessel, will guide our future decision-making process.

The ferry operates at a loss, and has for years. The deficit runs about $8 million a year. A 2019 fare increase aimed to reduce that loss, but the authority took a big hit in 2020 as COVID-19 meant changes to the operations while travel plummeted.

The ferry operation spent less on fuel and other expenses last year, but that did not come close to bridging the gap.

According to the Authority’s Chief Financial Officer Victor Ferzetti, the pandemic hit revenue expectations hard.

million,” Ferzetti said in a statement released when the DRBA approved its budget. “While some improvement is expected in 2021, our revenue projections for the upcoming year are still more than $11 million below pre-COVID forecasts.”

The budget was over $78.9 million.

Of that, about 80% comes from tolls on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The authority also operates airports, business centers and the Forts Ferry Crossing, a much smaller operation than the Cape May-Lewes ferry.

The first step toward a new ferry will be updating the Marine Master Plan, which was created in 2008.

The updated plan aims at keeping the ferry service operational, providing “safe, efficient and sustainable transportation.”

The ferry launched in 1964, connecting the 17-mile stretch between the New Jersey terminal near the Cape May Canal in Lower Township – not far from the southern end of the Garden State Parkway – to Delaware. Since then, the ferry has taken 14 million vehicles across on a ride that takes about 80 minutes.

For comparison, the Delaware Memorial Bridge handles more than 86,000 vehicles a day, according to the DRBA’s statistics. That’s 31.39 million a year, more than double what the ferry has carried in more than 50 years.

A recent editorial in a daily newspaper said it is time to abandon the ferries, opting instead for a 17-mile bridge across the bay. The billion-dollar proposal has been discussed but never formally studied. In the piece, the newspaper slammed the ferry for spending millions to upgrade the MV Twin Capes – now a reef – to make it like a cruise ship, serving fine dinners in a luxurious setting only to see its kitchens shut over unsanitary conditions.

A spokesman with the DRBA did not respond to calls or emails seeking comment about the feasibility of the idea of building a bridge. Such a bridge would cross shipping lanes and extend much farther than any other bridge in New Jersey. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a little over two miles, and the Pulaski Skyway, the longest bridge in the state, just over 3.5 miles.

“I’ve thought it was a good idea for years,” said Gerald Thornton, the director of the Cape May County Board of Commissioners. He said he and others in the county have advocated for a bridge across the bay for decades, citing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel as proof the engineering can work.

That four-lane, 20-mile crossing of the Chesapeake Bay was a massive undertaking, taking years to build and

costing $450 million in 1964, about $3.9 billion today.

Thornton said a Delaware Bay Bridge would be a massive boon to county tourism and help build a yearround economy in the county, which depends on summer beach visitors for most of its business.

The DRBA plans to keep the ferry running. There are three currently serving the route, with plans to explore the possibility of faster or smaller vessels, and green-friendly options like alternative fuels and hybrids. The review of the master plan is expected to take a year, to include a cost estimate and a review of lessons from previous efforts at the ferry.

ature is all around us.

Here in South Jersey, we are lucky to have several spots where bird watchers can relish in spotting even the rarest of feathered friends. Every year, tens of thousands of nature enthusiasts “flock” to the southernmost

point in New Jersey, eyes peeled and cameras in hand, in hopes of capturing the most magnificent photos of incoming birds. For some, it is a chance to count the number of birds seen on any given day. For others, it’s a chance to enjoy the beauty and diverse landscape that is the Jersey Shore.

settle along our stretch of coastline. At the Ocean City Welcome Center, on the Route 52 Causeway, Snowy Egrets inhabit the wetlands. These small herons can be spotted along our back bays, and other estuaries along the east coast. The Snowy Egret can easily be identified by their white plumage, black and yellow beaks, colorful eyes, black legs and yellow feet. You may find them foraging for food at the edges of rivers and lakes.

The Great Egret is also populating our region, and was recently spotted at the Welcome Center.

months. Their nests are situated along the back bays, just far enough from away from people and other birds that may wander. The large raptors enjoy living near bodies of water where their food supply is plentiful. The osprey’s diet largely consists of fish, and its vision is adapted to spotting underwater objects.

Here’s an interesting fact: ospreys can be found on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. These large birds can tolerate many different habitats.

The Red-Winged Blackbird is showing a large presence in South Jersey. The passerine birds are known to be one of the most abundant living land birds in the entire continent. Its song is quite distinctive, a loud “conk-la-ree!” that almost sounds like a screech. You will often find the redwinged blackbird sitting atop high perches, surrounded by fresh and saltwater marshes. These birds are hard to mistake. The males are often seen with red and yellow shoulder badges, while females appear more crisply streaked and dark brown.

Along your jour ney, you may find a flock of Great Blue Herons nesting along the wetlands.

These magnificent birds can grow in size anywhere from 3-4 feet and have a wingspan of up to 6 ½ feet.

And, of course, there is the American robin. These birds are a welcome sight across lawns throughout the country. You will often find these songbirds low to the ground, foraging for insects and other small creatures.

During the fall and winter months, they especially enjoy eating fruits.

Set up a bird feeder in your yard, and you are bound to see these colorful birds make an appearance. Their orange bellies are a popular sighting no matter where you live.

These are just some of the most

recent bird sightings throughout our local area. Wherever you are in South Jersey, you are bound to find many unique birds flocking throughout our region. Now is the time to charge your camera, grab your favorite pair of shoes, and explore the nature that surrounds us.

The Guardian Angels of Shore’s Emergency Department Honored as “A Calling.” For the past 10 years, patients at Shore have been honoring those who answer this call through the hospital’s Guardian Angel program. This program was established to enable members of the community to say thank you to a special Shore caregiver through a donation to the medical center.

Since the program’s inception, one Guardian Angel has been selected as Guardian Angel of the Month, but in May 2021, all 106 members of the Emergency and Pediatric departments will be recognized. This is the first time that an entire department will receive this honor. And, it was all made possible through a generous $5,300 donation by James Klinghoffer.

“I received a mailer from Shore asking me to honor a doctor with a donation in celebration of National Doctors’ Day, and it certainly grabbed my attention,” Klinghoffer said. “So I called my friend at Shore, Mary McGuckin, who knows how special the emergency and pediatric departments are to me. I told I her I would like to honor the doctors at Shore, but

s marketing director for Shore Medical Center, I have been fortunate to have spent a lot of time in the past year sharing the stories of our doctors and nurses about their experiences during Covid. While they all have their own unique perspectives, the common responses I keep hearing was that they were thankful for their co-workers, that the support of the community gave them an extra boost, and that they wanted to do whatever they could to help their patients.

These are truly special people.

Danny Weichenheim, an RN in Shore’s Emergency Department described his passion for caring for people as to me

the more I thought about it, I could not limit my gratitude to just the doctors.

“I wanted to honor every single person who works in the emergency department. Every one of them is a guardian angel; they are special people who have a special calling,” continued Klinghoffer. “So I was happy to recognize all 106 members of the ED staff with a Guardian Angel honor.

They all deserve it especially after all they have been through this past year, and every year.”

Klinghoffer, whose name appears on the exterior of Shore’s Emergency Department, is a long-time supporter of Shore Medical Center. Shore’s Pediatric Emergency Department, which recently added a sensory-friendly program, is named in honor of his parents, Harry and Edith Klinghoffer.

Reflecting on his support of Shore Medical Center, Klinghoffer said, “Years ago, I was told that Shore’s Emergency Department needed help.

I think anyone can donate money. But I wanted to create something to truly help people, and Shore’s ED certainly does that. I wanted to honor my parents and what better way to do that

than having their names adorn the walls of Shore’s Pediatric Emergency Department which takes care of so many children in a separate environment from the adults.

Kilnghoffer continued, “I recently spoke with one of the physicians at Shore and he said to me ‘I can’t thank you enough for the Pediatric Center.

Children are scared enough when they come to the ED. Having a designated emergency care center for children has helped so many people in their time of need.”

Mr. Peanut and the NUTmobile rolls into town

or the last ten months, the Planter’s NUTmobile has been on a nationwide journey to make people smile. From Maine to Washington state, Grand Teton National Park and the Baseball Hall of Fame, the 26 foot-long peanut-shaped vehicle has been criss-crossing the entire country. Last week, the vehicle made a special visit to the Atlantic City area. Accompanied by Mr. Peanut and their Peanutter ambassadors, the NUTmobile has been at the ShopRite in Somers Point, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the Atlantic City Boardwalk and on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City.

Mr. Peanut is the longtime mascot and icon of the Planters brand. He was created in 1916 by a young schoolboy named Antonio Gentile. His drawing of the peanut was chosen, with artist Andrew W. Wallach adding the top hat and monacle to complete the image. The popular icon has appeared on many TV commercials and cartoons.

For many years, the Planter’s Pea-

nuts store was a staple of the Atlantic City boardwalk. Located across from Steel Pier, the store drew in visitors with the aroma of roasting nuts. The mascot once greeted guests on the Atlantic City boardwalk, advertising the 5-cent bag of roasted peanuts, known as “The Nickel Lunch.” While the store closed in 1978, his presence on the Boardwalk continues to live.

Jilly’s Arcade Embraces New Technology: Allows Play with Coins or Fun Cards

illy’s Arcade in Ocean City is a family business that my family has been frequenting for years.

From busy summer days to the cold afternoons in the winter, my parents would give me a roll of quarters and tell me to play the $0.25 pinball until my money was gone.

During my winter visit to Jilly’s I saw some new machines. These machines offered their new Fun Cards with reloading ability that also never expires. It reminded me of the Dave and Buster’s cards. At first I got scared, I mean, no more quarters?! Jody Levchuk, Director of Operations for Jilly’s Arcade, assured me there is no need to panic.

“It’s just an all around good technology,” says Levchuk. “There were a

couple challenges with the future and video game playing and this is what we needed to close the gap between the people who want to play the game and new technology.” This new technology allows people to use cards or coins to play all the games at the arcade.

In recent days, it seems more people are taking advantage of paying with cards and not carrying cash. Now you can play if you only have a debit or credit card.

I love Jilly’s for the pinball that costs me a quarter and the skee ball that only costs me a dime! Sometimes, I would only go in with the change from my car. Have no fear. I was assured “As long as the games have the capacity to accept money we will never take that away.”

This new technology of Fun Cards seems to just make sense for customers and the business. Levchuk says events are easier now after implementing Fun Cards. It makes events and parties more feasible. Customers can purchase game play online which is something they

were never able to do before. Plus, the new technology offers them information on their business as well. “This gives us data on what games are getting played or when games are down,” he says. “I don't think there's ever a time when two or three games, tops, are out and that's usually because there’s a part coming.”

Like many businesses in Ocean City, Jilly’s Arcade offers a phenomenal promotion during the winter holidays and Easter season called “Double the Fun” which allows you to spend $50 and receive $100 in credit.

“We always have promotions but they vary,” says Luvchuk. “There is always some kind of deal with the Fun Card.” My boyfriend was lucky enough to take advantage of the Double the Fun promotion. There are also promotions offered through their card dispensing machines. I go to Jilly’s a lot during the year, so I opted for the deal that allowed me to “Spend $30 and get $35.” If you don’t plan on being in Ocean City a lot or for a long time you can also opt for the

unlimited play. You can pick an unlimited play plan that lets you pay one rate for 1 or 2 hours.

With the Fun Card, you are able to create an account and attach your information, so if you lose the card they are able to retrieve your funds. You can even take a picture of the back of your card where it displays the special number.

Then, if there is credit available, Jilly’s can help you retrieve your credits and account.

The change is different, but the new technology comes with new experiences and opportunities. “We’re very traditional and it’s a big change for us.”

Levchuk started, “But it's not a change because we're still doing what we're doing. It's an addition.” Hours of Operation vary as the seasons do, but they are open all year round. The only day the arcade is closed is Christmas Day. Remembering Water Safety Pioneer Joseph Krauss

Ocean City's First Lifeguard

A Look Back at Ocean City

oseph P. Krauss was Ocean City’s first lifeguard and an early leader in water safety. He began his lifesaving career in 1893 patrolling the beach between 8th and 11th streets. Bathers in the 1890s were used to seeing him rowing between Brower’s Bathhouse and the Excursion House helping swimmers get back to shallow water.

Joseph P. Krauss Until 1898, Krauss’ only financial reward for his lifesaving work came from donations and end-of-the-summer benefits held by the hotels.

During the summer of 1898 the need for professional bather protection became apparent, and City

Council appointed three men to patrol the surf. The men hired were Krauss, George W. Lee and William Scull. They were on duty everyday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and were paid $40 a month.

Council named Krauss captain of the lifeguards, a position he held until 1910. During that period, the patrol grew as the town grew, and the Ocean City lifeguards’ good reputation also grew.

In 1901, Krauss designed a lifesaving buoy and reported, “With our buoy the victim has three chances to be rescued. He can throw his arm over it, take hold of one of the loops around it, or grab the line attached to it, and six people can be brought in with one of them.”

In 1906, Krauss put up a large tent on the 10th Street beach which was used as the lifeguard headquarters, and to treat bathers with beach related injuries.

The professional bather protection contributed to the popularity of Ocean City. A 1906 publicity booklet bragged about the city’s safe bathing beach reporting, “Efficient beach guards are always on hand to aid any who may need help.”

In 1910, Mayor Lewis Cresse made Krauss superintendent of lifeboats, and Alfred R. Smith captain of the lifeguards. The two men guided the lifeguards until 1920 when Smith resigned. Mayor Joseph G. Champion appointed Jack G. Jernee captain.

Krauss remained on the patrol until his death on February 10, 1924. He was 79 years old.

Funeral services were held at the Prescott Cadman Funeral Parlor.

Captain Jernee decorated the parlor with flowers, rescue buoys, oars, and lifeguard pictures.

Rev. John B. Handley, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted the funeral service. The pallbearers were Jack G. Jernee, Alfred R. Smith and Fred Hedelt, representing the Ocean City Beach Patrol, and Ross Collins, Michael Pileggi and Joseph Gifford, representing the Patriotic Order Sons of America.

Krauss has been inducted into the Ocean City Beach Patrol Hall of Fame, and a plaque with his likeness is on display in the lifeguard museum.

Tortilla Wrap Hack for Cinco de Mayo

f you (or your children or loved ones) have spent time on TikTok or Instagram lately, then you have most likely seen the latest viral cooking trend sweeping social media in the form of a Tortilla Wrap Hack.

What is the Tortilla Wrap Hack?

The Tortilla Wrap Hack is a fun and unique new way to enjoy a sandwich wrap or homemade quesadilla. The “hack” includes a strategically placed cut to the center of the tortilla that allows you to fold the tortilla wrap, creating four customizable layers of fillings in the perfectly portable pouch.

Next, you make a cut in the center of the tortilla moving out towards the edge of the tortilla. To assemble, you divide your ingredients into the four quadrants of the tortilla before taking the tortilla and folding it into four quarters. To finish, you warm your tortilla wrap in a preheated pan until it is browned and toasted on both sides.

2. Cut the tortilla: Place a large tortilla out on a cutting board. Take a knife and make a cut from the middle of the tortilla down to the edge.

3. Fill the wrap: Place each set of ingredients in a separate quadrant of the tortilla. I filled one quadrant with shredded chicken drizzled with taco sauce, shredded cheese in another quadrant, salsa in another quadrant, and avocado with crushed tortilla chips in the last quadrant.

4. Fold the wrap: There are three folds to finish the wrap and each section is folded on top of one another. Repeat folding each section all the way around the wrap until you have what looks like one quarter.

5. Grill the wrap: Place the folded wrap in a pan and cook over medium heat, flipping once on each side until toasted and browned.

Dalton Farms Tulip Festival

ike a little taste of Holland in South Jersey, Dalton Farms Tulip Festival has been the buzz of the Shore Local area this spring. This walk-through, socially distanced outdoor event brought tulip lovers from far and wide to experience the colorful rows of 250 varieties of tulips.

Dalton Farms, located in Swedes-

boro, New Jersey, planted 930,000 bulbs for this year’s event. The partially wooded 99-acre, family-owned farm also boasts a beautiful six-acre lake and maintains ten thriving beehives that produce honey that the farm sells. Owner Keith Dalton has family ties to the farm that extend back to 1790, but christened the land as Dalton Farms along with his wife and son in 2018.

Last year was the first year that the farm featured tulips, but due to New Jersey’s COVID-19 regulations and

restrictions, the Tulip Tour was limited to a drivethrough only event. At that time, visitors could order pre-picked flowers and pick them up while remaining in their cars.

Photo by Theresa Law This year, the farm was able to host walk-through, U-pick participation. Guests could choose from the rainbow of colors and pick their own tulips for $1.00 a stem. Keith Dalton and his business partner Chris Viereck,

of Random Acts of Farmage Agritainment, spaced the six sections of tulip beds to allow visitors to move freely among the fields. Guests could pick tulips and take pictures “for the gram” while keeping a safe social distance.

Both young and old enjoyed the 2021 festival which ran from April 8-25. Strollers as well as walkers rumbled over the garden paths while toddlers frolicked among the flowers.

For those that found it difficult to walk the gravel path from the parking lot to the flower fields, utility vehicles gave a lift from the handicap parking lot.

“The boat wasn’t built for speed,” Rush explains. “It was built for comfort.” We cruised around Sea Isle at about 5 miles per hour enjoying the breeze and fresh salt air. Guns and Roses played as we set sail away from the docks. We could hear the seagulls in the distance as we cruised by some of the most amazing homes that occupy the waterfront. Every trip is a new experience, and these captains can take you anywhere you want to go.

You are encouraged to bring your own food and drink while you cruise your way around the bay. Why go to the bar when you can cruise on the bar?

Trips range anywhere from 1 hour and 30 minutes up to 3 hours. You can book your one of a kind experience as early as 8 a.m. and they set sail as late as 10:30 p.m. At Sea Isle, a group of 18 can book all 3 boats if available.

The back bays in Margate are expertly navigated by Scott and her team. “We know of every sandbar, beach you can pull up on, fishing holes, swimming holes, and there’s no fishing on this boat, but it’s for dancing and having fun,” says Scott. “You can do an entire Eco-tour back there.

There are Ospreys nesting, and we have a nest every 10 feet.” Every tiki cruise is a fun, different, and unique experience. The emphasis is really on having fun. Feel free to dance, eat, drink, and be merry while aboard.

s there a right or wrong way to drink whisky? Can I add ice?

What about a splash (or two) of water?

These questions and more are a natural part of the journey and discovery of whisky. It is ok to ask them.

Even better still it is ok to disagree with what I am about to say. Because ultimately this exploration is personal. We all have our own interpretation of what we should and should not do to our whisky. For me the answer is simple: There is no wrong way to enjoy whisky.

That’s what it’s all about after all.

Enjoyment. Why would you let someone else decide that for you.

If you order a steak at a restaurant, there is likely a specific way you like that steak cooked. Personally, I like my steak medium rare. Sometimes I’ll order rare, and medium can still be delicious.

So there is a range in many cases. The same can be said for whisky.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s take a more objective view towards these questions.

What happens when you add ice to whisky? A few things. The ice makes the whisky colder, numbing it in a way, which can make it much easier to drink! A side effect though, is a reduction in flavor. Some of the more delicate aspects of the whisky might become lost. As the ice melts, the proof dips, which compounds the loss of some flavors. Every whisky reacts to ice and ice melt differently. You might prefer some bottles on ice and others not. My only suggestion here is to always try a whisky first. Just so you have a baseline to compare how it changes.

If you prefer it on ice, grab some cubes! To add to the discovery, try mixing up the types of ice you use.

Big spheres, smaller cubes, or maybe

even whisky stones. These are literally stones that you put in your freezer.

They don’t chill the whisky quite as well as ice but they also don’t melt….. because they are stones. They are also reusable!

Is adding a splash of water ok?

Yes! Not only yes, I strongly encourage you to add water when you try a whisky for the first time. Sip it first , of course. But then, as part of the learning process, add a drop or two and see what changes.

Some whisky can change, but not just because the proof is now a tad lower. There are oils present in whisky and those drops can shake things up chemically.

Most whisky has water added to it before bottling.

So adding a bit more can’t really be against the rules can it? As before, it's up to you to decide how much to add and which whiskies change for the better because of it.

In summary, don’t let anyone tell YOU how to drink your whisky. Whisky is an experience. Life is a journey.

A Neighborhood Brewery Somers Point Brewery Pours Through Pandemic

A few local establishments are pouring their product. Their beers are served at Deauville Inn, Anchorage, Somers Point VFW and Josie Kelly’s. They have ten beers on tap including a hard seltzer and a nonalcoholic root beer.

“This is not my day job” said John.

“Sure, it’s a business to make money but it’s more of a hobby for us….a labor of love! I tell my wife this is a midlife crisis instead of a Corvette, I bought a brewery."

hen you think of a brewery in Atlantic County, you may picture it as an old warehouse set off the beaten path in an industrial park. When Deepak Chatham, Ed Siegel and John DiNofrio got together and set plans for a new brewery, they wanted it set in the middle of town, so it could be part of the community. They felt Somers Point needed a brewery, so they started looking around at properties that they would be able to develop.

The brewery was set to be in the old Somers Point Ice building on New York Ave, just off of Rt 9. They named the brewery after the town and after two years of planning, Somers Point Brewery was born. “We like to think of ourselves as a neighborhood Brewery.” says John DiNofrio. Located in the old Somers Point Ice house on New York Avenue, just off Route 9, SOPO as it’s called, has homes all around it. "The neighborhood has embraced us, John explained." Many customers walk or ride their bikes here."

s our community continues to emerge from pandemic, we look forward to fresh ideas and news concepts in Atlantic County including The Economic Innovation (EI) Center slated to open this summer.

Presented by innovator and entrepreneur, Andre Davis and team, the EI Center is scheduled to open this July. The Atlantic County EI Center will provide a premier facility for innovation and collaboration. The space will serve as host to coworking space, a media center, innovation station, a juice bar, and so much more.

Eating The Elephant - Tackling the Challenge When You're Called on to Speak Jeff's Journal

aybe you've heard the question, "How do you eat an elephant?"

The answer, "One bite at a time." It sounds simplistic but that's how you tackle the challenge of writing a speech. If you haven't been asked yet, someday you will be.

It may be to give a toast at a wedding reception, a eulogy at a funeral, a presentation for your department at work or a keynote address at a conference.

Regardless of the occasion, more times than not the challenge is not in the speech itself, it's in coming up with what to say (how to present your thoughts).

Keeping with the analogy, I’m asking you to indulge me a bit. Just as an elephant can be overwhelming to look at, being asked to stand up in front of anyone and give a speech (no matter how short or long) can be intimidating to say the least. I say this often, but the most important factor to consider when speaking is to ask yourself the question, “what is the one thing I want my audience to hear from me today?”

What is “THE TAKE-AWAY?" Once you know that, it’s really just a matter of finding the best way possible to communicate “the takeaway.”

There are three ways to appeal to your audience to drive home your point. I didn’t come up with this. In fact, it was the Greek Philosopher Aristotle who first presented this idea over 2,000 years ago.

Aristotle called this, The Persuasive Appeal. Each one builds on the other.

What is THE APPEAL? Aristotle said there are three ways to communicate a thought to your audience.

They are through ● Ethos ● Logos ● Pathos Ethos is relying on ethics or your credibility as the person giving the speech. If you lack credibility or authority, you are at a disadvantage when trying to persuade your audience. In contrast, if you have credibility, you have a much better chance of gaining the attention and respect of your audience.

Logos refers to logic. Make a logical appeal to your audience and they have reason to listen. Convincing your audience through logical means and you have a much better chance of getting through to them.

Pathos can be argued has the power to provide the most persuasive appeal. Pathos plays on the emotions of your audience. These emotions could be positive or negative. For

better or worse, we human beings are creatures of emotion. Think of most of the advertising we see today, a large majority of its success hinges on how it “plays our emotions”. If a television commercial can convince us that a product will make us happy, successful or satisfied there is a greater chance we’ll purchase that product.

If a service provides peace of mind, financial security or health, we’re all in. Pathos is very powerful.

It’s impossible to cover all the ways these tools of persuasion can help you share a better story, but

hopefully this gives you an idea and a place to start when it comes to making your speech one that moves your audience. Take Me to the Water

Senior Moments

O

n our recent drive back from Florida consisting of two nine-hour days back to back behind the wheel, periods of boredom and fatigue gave way to rare moments of clarity.

During one of these moments, my wife pointed out that whenever we crossed either a large body of water or even the smallest rivulets with signs of practically unpronounceable Indian names, we can’t help but try and steal a quick glance. It got me to thinking how closely tied my wife and I are to liquid landscapes. I don’t know if it is because of our close proximity to the beach and bay but we got to talking about it to help pass the time and the miles. Two summers ago, we took off on a nine-week cross country camping trip making it as far west as Montana, Wyoming and Utah. In retrospect, whether unconsciously or not, we stayed at campgrounds on the edge of Lake Superior, sat by the river in Sioux Falls, South Dakota,

paddled a kayak on Lake McDonald in Montana and slept in our car in Wyoming in order to secure a campsite in the morning on the shore of Jenny Lake in the Grand Tetons. This theme continued throughout the trip culminating in taking the Cape May-Lewes ferry for our final leg of the journey home. I have spent many years rowing in various rivers and lakes from Canada to Florida. Our son and daughter followed suit, both of whom rowed in high school and college requiring us to travel to the usual bodies of water.

Our grandchildren live in Marmora.

On one occasion, while driving them to our home in Ventnor, we said let’s count the number of bridges we cross on the way. I was surprised to find that there were about seven bridges. In addition to the obvious large bridges, there are series of small bridges over the tidal streams that flow through the marshes. I have been crossing the Dorset Avenue bridge to our home countless times over the 40 plus years I have lived here and I know I have not crossed once with out looking to the left and right to the Intracoastal checking for any activity. Our home is less than

the water? We know we could not live in a land-locked area. Even my father, who was born in Philadelphia came down to Atlantic City in his teens, settled down here after his time in the military and never left, raising his family here. My wife used to make fun of me for not wanting to leave my island, Absecon Island. The thought of a trip “offshore” would fill me with dread but I have come a long way with now just a mild case of separation anxiety. During our travels, when I tell people we are from New Jersey, I am compelled to qualify the statement with “we are not the New Jersey of refineries, smokestacks, and asphalt jungles. We are from South Jersey, where the waters of beaches, rivers and bays are never far away.” two blocks from the bay (sometimes much less depending on the storms) and six blocks from the ocean. Growing up in Margate, I was less than five blocks from the ocean. Whenever the discussion crops up of whether we should move out of New Jersey to a more tax friendly state, one of the considerations is, will we be near

Gardening By the Light of the Silvery Moon

alk to many old-time farmers about gardening by the moon, and they will swear it makes a difference in the health and germination rate of their plants. Though it sounds very mystical, for some people, gardening by the moon is simply working in tune with the cycles of nature.

Just don’t make the mistake my Aunt Dolly made. After hearing about gardening by the moon, she headed out in the dark with a flashlight in one hand, while trying to plant potatoes with the other. Sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

Moon gardening means working in harmony with the moon phases, not gardening at midnight. In its simplest form, according to folklore, you plant above the ground while the moon is growing (waxing), and plant below ground during the dark phase of

the moon (waning). Living by the ocean, we all know how a full moon can affect tides and flooding. Most local weathermen mention the moon phase when there’s a chance of flooding in the forecast. Moon gardeners use that same thinking and apply it to planting their crops and believe that during the new moon phase, the gravity of the moon is pulling w ater/m ois ture closer to the earth’s surface, making it the most prolific time to plant.

Some moon gardeners take it a step further and also plant by the astrological zodiac signs, but that can get complicated unless you are using a guide. Here is a more simplified plan: during the new moon, plant crops that produce seeds outside of the fruit such as flowers, leafy greens and grains; during the first quarter of the moon, plant crops in which we eat the seed-bearing type of plant such as tomatoes and beans;

during the full moon phase, the moon will begin waning. Plant root crops (those that are below the ground) like onions, carrots, and potatoes.

The last quarter is a time of rest from planting. Take care of tasks such as pruning, fertilizing, and weeding. If you’d like to test the theory of moon gardening, almanac.com provides a guideline for planting and lunar cycles. Of course, even old wives and old farmers will tell you, moon phase gardening shouldn’t replace common sense principles of planting.

While we are talking about moons, let’s discuss the two recent supermoons. A supermoon occurs when the monthly orbit of the moon reaches its closest point to Earth and coincides with a full moon, making the moon appear to be as much as 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. The Pink Full Moon was the first supermoon of the year, occuring on April 26, named

not for its own color, but the color of spring flowers growing. A month later, we will see the Full Flower Moon, on May 26, during the month that we celebrate the last frost and see flowers blooming everywhere. Since farmers are often planting their gardens around this date, it’s also known as the Corn Planting Moon. Though full moons are often named for what is happening in nature as opposed to their appearance, I find it a little disappointing. Wouldn’t it be neat to see a truly blue moon, a pretty in pink moon, or a moon covered in flowers in May? Have you tried gardening by the light of the silvery moon? n Saturday, April 17th, the South Jersey community was invited to “Light Up the Fight.” Relay for Life of Linwood, a program of the American Cancer Society, held a drive-thru luminaria. The event, celebrating cancer survivors and remembering loved ones who have lost their battle, was held at the Tony Canale Training Center in Egg Harbor Township.

The theme this year is “Wish Upon a Cure.” Each luminaria bag was purchased by a community member and graciously decorated by area

families, filled with bright colors and words of hope. In the hours leading up to Saturday’s e ve n t , Re l ay volunteers were on-site to set up the marvelous display. Mental Health Association provides essential services

T

he local nonprofit that increased services for mental health supports during the pandemic is again expanding its outreach to the community with additional virtual groups, training, and workshops.

“Mental health challenges have existed over the decades, but not quite like what we’ve experienced through the pandemic.” said Vicki Phillips, Executive Director of The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County. “Isolation, long term stress, anxiety and depression have impacted a record number of people.”

The agency currently provides virtual support and discussion groups as well as wellness workshops which help people find support, connect online and develop coping skills.

Some programs offer a call-in option for those who do not have access to a computer.

A year ago in March, the agency’s traditional in-person groups for anxiety, depression, bipolar support, and family support groups – designed for those with an ill family member – all transitioned to being offered virtually.

At the same time, new groups such as Baby Boomers, meditation, gratitude, coping skills, a book club and others were offered to provide wellness tools to both existing attendees and new ones.

Across the state, the agency’s umbrella organization, The Mental Health Association in New Jersey, has been providing virtual support to those in occupations severely impacted

by COVID, such as school nurses, teachers, and health care providers.

Phillips said the number of groups and number of people utilizing groups has multiplied exponentially during the past year both locally and statewide. In 2020 the Atlantic County office reports a 140 percent increase in individuals using services offered through their wellness center in comparison to the year prior to the pandemic.

In addition to offering groups, the Mental Health Association and affiliate offices are providing Community Education Workshops on topics much as mental health during COVID, LGBTQ+,

nutrition and mental health, suicide, mental health and dating, others.

“Today you turn on the TV and you hear newscaster talking about mental health, especially for the elderly and

children, parents,” said Phillips. “There is less stigma and more awareness as a result of the pandemic. It’s become acceptable to talk about it.”

Another way the agency is impacting the local community is through partnering with local law enforcement, mental health providers and

EMT’s to offer Crisis Intervention Training. This evidence-based model trains in ways to safely and compassionately de-escalate a person in a mental health crisis, explained Phillips.

She said the April class graduated 40 police from Atlantic City, Brigantine, Pleasantville, Galloway, Margate as well as those working in casino gaming and at Stockton university. Community partners including AtlantiCare, Caring, Crossroads Behavioral, Jewish Family Services and Legacy also participated.

EHT PAL Board Gives Green Light for New Indoor Turf Arena

t’s been almost 8 years in the making, but the Egg Harbor Township PAL’s Executive Director and co-founder Hector Tavarez would argue it’s been 32 long years in the making with a little chuckle and smile. Whichever it is, the construction of Buddy’s Adventure Zone has been full of obstacles, challenges and setbacks and now is pure satisfaction. In the end, not even a pandemic and Covid-19 would deny the Egg Harbor Township Police Activities League members their goal of building the multi purpose destination community center.

Buddy’s Adventure Zone was conceived by a youth and adult future planning committee in 2013 as an affordable multi purpose facility designed to challenge the body and the mind. The complex is located on a 5 acre lot at 2542 Ridge Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, adjacent to the organization’s Ready to Ride, 30 acre OHV Park. The first building built in the complex was a 14,000 square foot STEM building. It was completed in July of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Conceived, designed, built

and being paid for by the organization, the first building alone was a big challenge. “We decided to build the STEM building first because we knew the STEM aspect provided more benefits to the members’ futures. We know that we can help a member go to college or trade school and land a great job. We have no such guarantees in helping them become professional athletes”, said Tavarez.

The new building is a far cry from the 6th District Rescue squad build-

ing the organization occupied in the early 90’s. Opened during the pandemic, the new STEM and summer camp building has been used on a limited basis for out-of-school learning and a few of the organization’s competitive robotics teams. On hold due to COVID are the STEM workshops, media and astronomy clubs, its internationally ranked Seaperch teams and a host of other programs.

“It’s very different from the rescue squad building. When we took that building over it was condemned and

the Township Committee laughed at me when I asked to use it. But, even that building helped the organization grow and is presently home to our Little PALs preschool”, said Tavarez.

Less than a year after opening Phase 1, PAL is moving forward with Phase 2 of the project, a 21,400 square foot athletic building with a 14,000 square foot AstroTurf field.

Canine Allergy, or Atopic Dermatitis Paw Prints

ur pets suffer from allergies just as we humans do, but unlike us,who primarily sneeze and cough, our pets mostly itch. This is the excessive itching that wakes you up at night. The excessive feet licking that drives you..and the pet...... crazy!

Allergy in dogs is called Canine Atopic Dermatitis, or Atopy. This is a common skin disease, affecting almost ten percent of dogs worldwide.! It may be caused by genes that make your dog more likely to have a strong reaction when exposed to allergens. Overtime, atopy can worsen and become a serious health issue. Your dog's skin can become itchy, red, scaly and severely irritated. Secondary problems are hair loss, open sores, and skin and ear infections, with both bacteria and yeast.

Like human allergies, atopy can be triggered by pollens or molds during certain seasons, or by dust mites or other allergens in the environment, including floor cleaners and laundry detergent!

Atopic dermatitis is likely a life long condition, but with help from your veterinarian the itching can be controlled so your dog, and you, can enjoy the things you both love again.

Since we have different reactions, this should tell you that the mechanism of allergy is DIFFERENT in humans vs pets.

However there is a new therapy available that is a “biologic” and not a chemical/drug, called Cytopoint. It is a non pharmaceutical treatment that works much like your dogs immune system, which is based on what is known as Antibody/Antigen reaction. Antibodies are what you and your pet make to defend the body against infection or disease. (these are antigens) Cytopoint, is an engineered antibody similar to the dogs immune system. It is an FDA approved therapy for dogs with allergy, and actually targets, and neutralizes, a pro-inflammatory compound made by the body called Interleukin 31. (IL31).

This Interleukin is made in response to the allergenic substance, and this is the biological compound in the pet's body that sends signals to the brain that stimulates the itch.

Cytopoint, “attaches” itself to IL 31 and neutralizes it! Thus IL 31 can not signal the body to itch! This is a huge breakthrough as it stops the itch where it actually starts, and does not just “cover up” the itch symptoms. Choosing the right shoe for your workout Shore Fit

o matter what kind of exercise you do, wearing the right kind of shoes can make a big difference.

Whether you're into running, cardio workouts, cross training, weight lifting, cycling or walking, wearing the right shoe for your workout is essential.

Do you need a running shoe, a weightlifting shoe or a cross trainer?

Do you need breathable mesh, anti-slip rubber or a thick sole shoe with lots of cushion for running. Do you go for the big brands like Nike, Reebok or Adidas?

I prefer, Asics, Brooks and Hoka’s. They are perfect for my feet. Finding the best workout shoes often comes down to personal preference. For trail running on all sorts of terrain you’ll want firm soles for added stability on the trails and a reinforced toe box to keep you from stubbing your toe. These types

of shoes are sturdier and also good for indoor cycling classes that require a toe cage for your feet if you don’t invest in cycle shoes.

You probably don't want to buy just any gym shoe, especially if you're going to be investing a lot of time and money into your training routine. I go to a specialty store in the area that has tons of knowledge on the subject. They even measure your toe box. I cannot wear a narrow shoe because I have a wider toe box. How many of us actually know this?

I would bet, not a lot of people are educated in this area. I see it all the time that people just buy a certain brand based on looks but it’s actually not appropriate for your workout.

Running and strength training can be done in one type of sneaker so it’s very important to find the correct one especially if your workouts include both of these aspects. That will do away with needing two different sneakers which is such a money saver. You’ll need a sneaker with great ankle support. Once the ankle and knees are supported correctly, the proper shoe can relieve pain in the knees and ankles and help correct over pronation which is when your foot rolls inward. This can cause shin splints and knee pain and swelling. A good stability shoe will help minimize the rolling inward

and help the heel-to-toe transition. This is why I purchase Brooks and Asics. They are also fantastic for HIIT, plyo metrics (jump training) and CrossFit. They have amazing shock absorption for high-impact movements, but are light enough that they don't feel like clunky moon shoes and they give you more bang for your buck.

Speaking of clunky moon shoes, Hoka’s are fantastic running shoes but not so much for strength workouts or workouts that have you moving laterally. Hoka’s are super comfortable, shock absorbers and quite honestly make you feel like you're running on clouds. If you’re moving laterally (with an exercise such as Zumba) you’ll need appropriate footwear or injury will most likely occur.

I believe this type of exercise even sells appropriate footwear for those types of dance classes.

Whether you've crossed several finish lines or are just embarking on your running journey, choosing the right running shoes can make or break your performance. The wrong running shoes can strip your toes of their toenails.

Yikes, I know, but trust me I speak from experience on that one. This happened

to me before I really knew about finding the correct sneakers. The right shoe choice can make you feel fast, light on your feet and ready to take on the world!

If you're shopping for someone other than yourself, be aware that the best shoes are different for each person.

Their foot should be measured. Sneakers are very personal. You never want to gift a pair of workout shoes that gives someone blisters, pinches their toes or feels lumpy. Just because something may be a great deal doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to the exerciser. Next time you're ready to purchase a new set of kicks, make sure you consider the type of exercise you’re doing, have your foot and toe box measured, and possibly invest in a great pair that serves many functions or two pairs that suit your specific exercise needs.

A lot of people think they might go with a wide receiver, and I was always okay with DeVonta Smith from Alabama. He did win the Heisman Trophy after all and was an exceptional college football player. However, that doesn’t always translate to the NFL, and the Eagles can’t afford to miss on this pick.

If they don’t go with Smith, the Eagles could possibly choose his fellow Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Some folks think Waddle is the better athlete of the two, but he’s also considered to be an undersized “speedster” and the Birds kind of already have that in Jalen Reagor.

There’s always a chance the Eagles draft an offensive lineman, and Penei Sewell, the offensive tackle out of Oregon is expected to be off the board by the time the Birds are on the clock. However, there’s a chance the Eagles take Rashawn Slater, the versatile monster from Northwester. The Eagles offensive line is aging and injury-prone, and Slater gives them a plug-and-play stud who’d be ready to play at a high level on opening day.

No matter what, heading into the draft, the Eagles have an NFL high 11 picks to negotiate with.

If tradition holds to form, Howie Roseman will use some of those “surplus” picks to move up at a key time and take a player he really wants. The 2021 NFL draft begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday April 29th.

More than likely by the time you read this column, you’ll know the outcome of what the Eagles have done, but that doesn’t dampen my enthusi● asm for the NFL draft any less.

Since I last wrote, the intensity and drama has “ramped up” surrounding the Eagles and who they are going to pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The Phillies continue to hover around a .500 record, although they have gotten some masterful pitching performances from two of their starters. The Sixers had a little losing streak, but bounced back once one half of their dynamic duo was back active again.

The Flyers are not mathematically ● eliminated from the playoffs, but it would take a miracle for them to get in. Speaking of miracles, Tiger Woods might need one if he’s going to return to competitive golf again, but a picture he released on Instagram is promising.

From entertainment, one of my favorite sitcoms is going off the air at the end of the season.

Plus, the main actress had a secret that even the show producers didn’t know! And, there’s a drama that’s about to drop on Amazon Prime that will have me binge watching. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We’ll start with the Eagles as I think they will stay put at #12 as I think that’s why they made the deal to move back in the first place. All signs point to a run on QB’s early in the draft, which means other positions of need will fall into Philadelphia’s lap! It’s not a young guy, but a veteran who surprised me the other night though. With his two goals the other night, Giroux passed Brian Propp on the Flyers All-Time Points list as he now has 850 career points with Philadelphia. Only Bill Barber and Bob Clarke have more, and Barber is within reach next season as he sits at 883, only 33 points away. The guy they call “G” surprised me though after the game, as cameras caught him with a wide GRIN on his face after the win. You don’t see Giroux smile much on (or off) the ice!

My last item in sports is a guy with a big smile as he’s probably grateful to still be with us, and that’s Tiger Woods. Woods posted a picture of himself on Instagram the other day along with his dog Bugs, who is a Border Collie and Springer Spaniel Mix. Woods has mostly stayed out of the limelight since the incident in February, when he was injured in a car crash in Rancho Palos Verdes on Hawthorne Boulevard. In March he returned from the Los Angeles hospital where he was recovering to his Florida home. Heal fast Tiger!

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I the CBS sitcom “Mom” is set to air its series finale on May 13th.

“Mom” is the network's currently longest-running comedy series, so it truly is the end of an era. The show took a creative hit when lead actress Anna Faris elected to leave after season 7 and the cast went on without her. However, I’ve always considered Bonnie (Allison Janney) to be the rock of the show. In fact, Janney had a HUGE surprise for producers when she came back after a break

this season. The 61-year-old actress showed up with her natural silver hair color and everyone was shocked. Turns out she’d been wearing a wig on the show since season 2 and no one knew! Good luck to Janney and all involved. I hope they find another gig soon as I enjoy their work very much. ● And my last item is about “Without Remorse” on Amazon Prime.

Based off the 1993 novel by Tom Clancy, and a spin-off of the Jack Ryan book & film series, “Without Remorse” is set to star Michael B. Jordan as Senior Chief John Clark, a Navy SEAL who finds himself in a world of trouble both foreign and domestic. I’m a huge fan of Tom Clancy and anything Jack Ryan related, so I can’t wait for this. Apparently, Jordan has already signed on for a sequel to this film and that will be “Rainbow Six”, which is also a Tom Clancy book and now a popular video game.

I’ll close with my reminder to keep wearing those masks and staying socially distant please. Vaccines continue to be given out in New Jersey with more and more people getting vaccinated every day. I’m fortunate enough to announce that I am now “fully vaccinated” and I hope that you will do the same. Hopefully “normal” is coming soon!

Cremation: A History of the Practice. (Part 1)

W

hen an individual dies, there three main methods of disposition of the body practiced here in America.

The first and most common is traditional burial, the second is cremation and the third is green burial. In my last article I described what green burial was and how it was performed. I now want to discuss the practice of cremation and all the different types.

First, I would like to give a little background on the history of cremation.

Cremation itself has been done by our ancestors as far back as the Stone Age about 3,000 B.C. starting in Europe and the Near East. As we moved into the Bronze Age 2,500 to 1000 B.C. the practice of cremation spread as far as the British Isles. By the time of the Mycenaean Age the custom of cremation was a standard practice in Grecian burial customs.

The practice of cremation was further spread by Alexander the Great as his armies reached out through the Mediterranean, middle-east and Asia. The early Romans then adopted the practice of cremation around 600 B.C. and were encouraged for health reasons. It was also a convenient way to dispose of dead soldiers that had been killed in massive battles. By the time of the Roman Empire, cremation was widely practiced. The custom of cremating the dead was exported to all its conquered territories and neighbors. It was at this point in history that the cremated remains were generally stored in elaborate urns and placed in large columbarium buildings. When Christianity took hold in the Roman Empire, cremation started to be phased out as a custom because it was looked upon as a pagan practice. By 400 A.D. due to Emperor Constantine’s Christianization of the Empire, earth burial had completely replaced cremation except in extreme cases such as plague or war. Ground burial would remain the most accepted method of disposition in Europe for the next 1,500 years.

performed in the United States in 1792 when Colonel Henry Laurens, former president of the Continental Congress passed away. His last will and testament specifically stated that his remains were to be cremated because of his fear of being buried alive.

His son built a pyre on the colonel’s estate in South Carolina and his body was reduced to ashes.

The remains were placed in an urn and then buried in the family cemetery.

In 1873 cremation had a revival beginning at the Vienna Exhibition when Professor Ludovico Brunetti revealed a furnace he had invented specifically for the sole purpose of cremating human remains. The first in the U.S. was based on the same unit shown at the Vienna Exposition in Europe by Baron DePalm . He was fascinated by “Eastern philosophy”.

Also he once knew a woman who had been buried alive and was terrified at the possibility of the same thing happening to him.

The crematory in he built Washington, PA was used only 25 times before it was closed to the public..

Why, because even though the practice is commonplace today, cremation was a radical, tradition breaking idea.

Advocates of cremation believed that burying deceased individuals in the

ground allowed diseases to seep into the soil and helped to spread cholera, typhus and yellow fever.. Also, proponents of cremation thought that it solved the problem of urban expansion.

As cities expanded, they surrounded burial grounds that had once been miles away but were now “resting” on prime real estate. The land taken up by cemeteries was a major issue for

the cities New York, Brooklyn, and Newark.

But like I said, cremation was slowly breaking some traditions - some secular and some religious.
