The partnership will secure the future of the iconic amusement park which has been on the Ocean City Boardwalk since 1929. Both families have a deep history in amusements and hospitality and said they are partnering to better serve guests.

Our special needs surfers have had the opportunity to participate in local surf contests, including Chip Miller Surf Fest, Dean Randazzo Surf for a Cause, and the Surf Rodeo. Seeing our surfers encouraged by some of this area’s best surfers and hearing the crowd cheer as they catch a wave is one of the most heartwarming feelings I’ve experienced. One of our surfers even went on to join his high school’s surf team.

With the opportunity and support, he thrived and even surfed, on more than one occasion, with local pro, Rob Kelly.

As Heart of Surfing has grown over the years, we have teamed up with many of the area beach patrols, surf

camps and clubs to created opportunities for hundreds of families with autism to experience the joy of riding the waves.

We are so fortunate to live in a community that stands with us in creating opportunities for families with autism.

April is Autism Awareness Month.

Brown Sugar-Maple Oven Roasted Carrots

4 servings | Cook time 50-60 minutes Ingredients ● 5-6 large carrots, sliced ● 2 TBSP olive oil ● 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed ● 1/3 cup pure maple syrup ● 1 TBSP butter (not melted) ● salt and pepper to taste

Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Peel and cut carrots into circular slices.

Spread carrots in shallow baking pan. Toss with olive oil, brown sugar, maple syrup and salt and pepper. Add butter (break up into pieces) and top evenly over carrots.

Bake carrots, tossing every 20 minutes until tender and edges are lightly browned. Once finished, sprinkle with a pinch of brown sugar to finish. Serve warm.

Oven Roasted Hasselback Carrots

4 servings | Cook time 50-60 minutes Ingredients ● 4 large carrots ● 3 TBSP olive oil ● salt and pepper to taste ● 3 TBS butter, melted ● 1 tablespoon chopped parsley ● 2-3 tablespoons of crumbled feta Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat a small baking pan with cooking spray or oil.

Peel carrots and make crosswise cuts ever y 1/4-inch along each carrot, being careful not to slice all the way down.

Carefully transfer the carrots to the prepared baking dish and drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Add 1/4 cup of water to baking pan.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake until just tender. Remove foil for last 10 minutes of cooking to brown the carrots.

In a small bowl, combine melted butter with chopped parsley.

Once finished, transfer carrots to serving tray. Drizzle with melted butter-parsley mixture and top with feta cheese. Serve warm.

Tangy Carrot Salad

4 servings | Prep time 15-20 minutes Ingredients ● 3 large carrots ● 1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped ● 2 TBSP chopped cilantro ● 1/4 large red onion, thinly sliced ● 2 TBSP olive oil ● 1/2 TSP ground cumin ● 1/2 TSP garlic powder ● 1/2 TSP salt ● juice of 1 lime Directions Thinly slice the carrots into ribbons using a vegetable peeler. Soak in ice water until the ribbons firm and curl (about 15 minutes). Drain and pat dry.

Whisk together olive oil, cumin, garlic powder, salt and lime juice in a large bowl. Add carrot ribbons, cilantro, jalapeño and red onion and toss evenly to combine. Serve immediately or place in refrigerator. Best served cold.

Spring weather in South Jersey is hard to predict

"I

t's the only job you can always be wrong all the time and not get fired."

Yes, it's true. Meteorology is an "inexact" science, and blowing a weather forecast has resulted in many an email in my inbox or comment on my Facebook page similar to the above over the years. And there's been much worse of course, that's not fit for print. But I do take issue with the "always" implication in the opening critique. In my two-decade career alone, we've made significant strides in forecasting, and accuracy is as high as it's ever been. But that doesn't mean an occasional forecast doesn't work out as planned.

Coincidentally, there's no other time of the year more likely for a forecast to go awry than the early to mid-spring, or roughly from late March through the

middle of May. In fact, it was just last Thursday (March 25th) when spring through its first curve ball, and low clouds which were expected to burn off never did, and temperatures sat closer to 60 degrees instead of surging into the forecast 70s. (Of course, the next day worked out as planned, and last Friday saw temperatures soar into the mid 80s!). It was the first bust of the spring, but it likely won't be the last.

South Jersey weather is always fickle and there are challenges for meteorologists in each and every season.

Summertime thunderstorms can rapidly develop and hit hard and fast. Look no farther than the June 2012 derecho for that. Tropical systems bring their own set of complications each fall.

We all remember one or more winter storms when a foot was forecast and only a few flakes fell, or conversely when we went to bed expecting to wake up to an inch of snow and there was instead eight inches waiting when we woke up the next morning.

While the spring doesn't usually offer up strong and destructive storms, the challenges that the spring season present are more subtle but also more numerous. The biggest temperatures bust each year, meaning a given day is either much warmer or much cooler

than expected, are most commonly found in the spring. Likewise, the biggest sky cover busts, meaning that a given day is either much sunnier or much cloudier than expected, also occur this time of year more than any other.

Why? We largely owe it all to that big body of water that sits just to our east, the mighty Atlantic Ocean. To be more specific, we can blame the fact that ocean water takes a longer time to warm up each spring and summer compared to the air. Yes, the ocean is still quite cold in the spring, even when the land heats up. Take last Friday for instance, when the air temperature at the beaches soared into the mid 80s, while the ocean temperature sat in the mid 40s.

The cold ocean is one part of the complex spring weather equation.

Any wind off that ocean increases the complexities. Spring sea-breezes can keep the islands in the 40s, given that is the temperature of the ocean that the wind is coming off of. But head 20 miles inland, and it can be summer-like and above 80 degrees.

On the extreme side, I've seen several a South Jersey day when Margate is around 45 degrees with a marine layer and low clouds, Mays Landing is 65 degrees with clouds and some peek-a-boo sun, and Hammonton is 85 degrees with sweltering summer sunshine. What's challenging about a 40-degree temperature-spread over just Atlantic County?

Winds off a cold ocean can also lock in clouds and fog, which can sometimes be stubborn to leave once they settle in. There is seemingly always more than a handful of forecasts for sunshine each spring spoiled by some

fickle fog or an obstinate overcast of low clouds. Get the sunshine forecast wrong, and an incorrect high temperature forecast will obviously follow.

And then there's the notorious "back door" cold front, a feature that usually occurs only in the spring and only along the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coast. Cold fronts normally move from west to east across the country and through South Jersey. Back door fronts sneak "backwards" down the coast from New England. While they seldom bring any significant rain, they are known for instantly changing a mild and sunny spring day to a cool, cloudy, and brisk one. Temperatures can drop 20-something-degrees in less than an hour as a back door front slowly slides down the shore. It's real fun for forecasters when that front stalls over South Jersey, and Cape May County is on the sunny, warm side and Atlantic County on the cooler and cloudier one.

Thanks to the colder ocean, getting a nice spring season from start to finish is difficult but not impossible to accomplish. So is getting through a spring with no blown forecasts. Here's hoping we're lucky on both counts going forward this season!

“pearled” or slid down off the nose of the board when it dove under the water. A cautionary eye periodically searched the horizon for the inevitable “clean up set” when a series of larger waves would rise up beyond the surf line and leave unsuspecting surfers struggling in the white water.

There were no leashes so failing to hold onto the board was usually followed by a swim. Hopefully, the board didn’t wash all the way into shore. Soft surfboards were not invented yet and I doubt any of the purists would have been seen dead riding one although it sure would have saved me some hard knocks.

In June of 1966 a movie came out that changed the surfing scene forever. The actors didn’t have any lines but the film was wryly narrated

by Bruce Brown, a young competitive surfer and documentary filmmaker.

t was the summer of 1965 when I bought my first surfboard. I was 15 and the big surfing craze had not hit yet. The purchase was the logical progression for a teen who grew up at the beach and tired of the inflated canvas rafts that we constantly patched with bicycle tire patch kits. My board was a 9’8” log that compared to today, weighed a ton. I bought it from an Ocean City surf shop that sold, well….surfboards.

A far cry from the surf shops today that must sell everything from beachwear, footwear, eye wear, watches, sunscreen and other items in order to be a viable business. I bought my wax for the board at a hardware store and in a pinch was forced to lift a couple Shabbat candles from the house. There were no surf schools no surf videos. You learned by watching other surfers and then applied the trial and error approach. Too far back on the board and you didn’t catch the wave, too far forward and you

and it became the catalyst for a surf movement that continues today. It portrayed a couple surfers traveling around the world in search of the perfect wave and the trip resonated with young surfers and would be surfers everywhere.

My two surfing friends and I were caught up in it as well. Our surfboards were loaded into the convertible Olds Starfire with their noses wedged under the back of the front seats and the boards sticking up in the air, an iconic scene of the 60’s. We drove that way up to Atlantic City, down through Ventnor, Margate, Longport and even ventured as far as Ocean City. We knew we weren’t world travelling surfers and we knew this was the best we could do. I didn’t go home for days. Our accommodation was the basement of my friend’s house in Ventnor. It was dark and dank with a curious smell. Today it would probably be a prime candidate for a mold reme-

diation team. If I could duplicate the rather complex aroma of a combination of coconut, salt water and mildew I might have a chance on Shark Tank.

I believe that once you are a surfer, you are always a surfer. Even while sitting on the beach or riding my bike on the boardwalk, I am checking out the surf and carving imaginary turns on the face of a wave. An early morning or early evening drive through local shore towns will reveal working class surfers pulling boards out of their roofing, landscaping, contracting trucks, etc. to grab a few waves in an effort to maintain some balance in their lives. It has been a few years since I was on my board and I keep thinking I am just a day away from dragging it out of the garage and going for a paddle.

Views from the Shore – “Follow the Footprints” able see the results of this generosity towards the hospital.

Together, our Emergency team, Mary and the Goldberg’s created the “Follow the Footprints” initiative. Evan Goldberg, 17, Samantha Goldberg, 15, Lia Goldberg, 12, and Maya Goldberg, 8, had their feet traced to symbolize them taking their first step towards a philanthropic lifestyle; these footprints will be adhered to the floor of the Emergency Room and will give children with sensory issues a path and something to focus on while they head to their examination room.

What is a Sensory-Friendly Room?

Shore Medical Center is working in conjunction with the Atlantic County Special Services School to create a pediatric sensory room that accommodates the needs of children with sensory issues. This will be a wonderful resource for these children to receive medical care, and it will be a godsend for parents who may hesitate to take a child for care for fear of uncertainty.

s the Marketing Director for Shore Medical Center, I am lucky to have the chance to collaborate with others to create a caring environment at our hospital. Our recent project brings me together with our Emergency department team, Shore’s lead fundraiser Mary McGuckin and the Atlantic County Special Services School. Mary approached me after Shore was given a very generous donation from the Goldberg family to support our new sensory friendly area in our Pediatric Emergency Room. The Goldberg’s expressed to Mary that they wanted to instill a philanthropic attitude into the youngest generation of their family and wanted them to be

loud sounds, and a changing routine.

Shore’s sensory room will include things such as a bubble wall, a sound machine, rocking chairs, crash mats, and weighted blankets. Staff will use Ipads and picture cards to help with non-verbal communication with these children to help explain why they are at the hospital and what to expect.

Each of these items, will help children feel calmer before and during treatment. Children will be provided with toys via a fidget cart as well as reduce the anxiety that they feel. . After the room opens on April 2 - World Autism Awareness Day - Shore will be one of the few medical destinations in New Jersey to offer a sensory room for its patients.

Why is a Sensory-Friendly Room Important?

In Atlantic County alone, there are an estimated 1,600 children on the autism spectrum and in Cape May County, there are almost 500 more.

While a trip to the hospital may be frightening for most children, these effects are only amplified for children with sensory sensitivity issues.

Shore Medical Center is dedicated to providing proper medical care, and also to creating a healing environment for patients and their families.

Shore’s sensory-friendly room is an important step for the families in our community. Thank you to Shore’s incredible clinical team, the compassionate team at the Atlantic County Special Services School and the Goldberg family for making this a reality.

Easter Dinner: Keep It Simple

P

reparing holiday meals for a crowd can be a daunting task. In November, all the chopping, baking, and planning for Thanksgiving dinner can take an entire week, only to have it consumed in 20 minutes flat, leaving a roomful of stacked, dirty dishes and a turkey carcass in its wake.

Fortunately, for me, Easter dinner feels a bit more relaxed, with lower expectations than “The Great Feast” of fall that’s steeped in unalterable traditions. But since Easter is one of the most holy days of the Christian faith, you want your time together with family and friends to be special and meaningful.

Even though food isn’t the point of the holiday, it’s interesting how, in most cultures, celebrations are centered around food. We feel a sense of oneness and camaraderie when we “break bread together”. I love seeing the faces and hearing the laughter of different generations of my family gathered around the table, while quietly remembering those who aren’t.

As my mother-in-law got a little older and started handing over the reins of hosting holidays, I wanted to keep up the high standards of the delicious meals that she had always made for us. One year, taking a cue from her dinners of Easter past, I recalled a wonderful crown roast that she had cooked. The butcher prepares two racks of pork loin chops and ties them in such a way that

forms a “crown” and it makes an impressive presentation indeed. So, for once, I was on the ball and knew to call our local butcher ahead of time to pre-order this centerpiece of my meal. When I placed the order, they warned me it could get a bit pricey and suggested a half-crown. Of course, I insisted that it must be a full crown for effect. After all, this was a special day and my in-laws were coming for dinner! Well, when I naively arrived at the store, beaming about my purchase, they told me what the final price would be. I almost fainted from sticker shock.

Perhaps in my excitement the week before, my math skills had forsaken me when I ordered a full crown. But the deed was done, and now it was my job to cook this roast that I believe should have been gold-plated and bejeweled. That was many years ago, and what I remember most was not the taste of the roast, but my fear of ruining this meal that had dipped into our kids’ college fund. Lesson learned. Keep things simple.

No longer a young bride, I’ve learned the art of entertaining is to find ways to make delicious food that doesn’t take all your time away from your guests. Usually, the head chef of Easter dinner is also the person busy filling grass-stuffed baskets with candy and hiding colorfully dyed eggs.

takes about 40 minutes. Mix an 1/8 cup brown sugar with 1/8 cup soy sauce. Add the zest and juice of one lime and a splash of extra virgin olive oil. That’s it! Make sure you place two to three layers of tin foil on a rimmed baking sheet or you will be scrubbing burnt caramelized brown sugar off the pan until Labor Day. Rub the marinade over the salmon and let it sit 15-20 minutes. Place salmon in a 400 degree preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. Then broil for a few minutes, keeping a careful eye on it so it doesn’t burn. I usually throw a couple of sprigs of thyme before or after broiling, which is more for presentation than flavor.

Adoptions Up, Renovations Underway at OC Humane Society

During the height of the pandemic, many animal shelters throughout the country reported an increase in the number of adoptions. Shelter Animals Count, an organization that tracks shelter and rescue activity, noted a 15% rise in pet adoptions last year.

Over 26,000 shelter pets found new homes in 2020 than the year before.

At the Humane Society of Ocean City, the number of adoptions went up dramatically, with over 100 shelter

ince the onset of the pandemic, the Humane Society of Ocean City has seen an outpouring of support from the community. Volunteers have stepped up to provide essential supplies for shelter operations.

The generosity of its donors, and volunteers, has allowed the Humane Society to purchase much-needed supplies, such as cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, gloves, trash bags and other essential goods.

In addition, the shelter has undergone a complete remodel of their facility. New facilities include a renovated cat room, spacious play yard and updated kennels. These new facilities have enriched the lives of animals, according to Executive Director, Bill Hollingsworth.

Last year’s Virtual Campout fundraiser raised more than $3,500 for shelter operations.

Buona Pasqua!

E

aster, or Pasqua, is the second most impor tant Italian holiday after Christmas. The holiday is a three-day weekend with the Italian observance of Pasquetta, or little Easter, a public holiday celebrated on Easter Monday.

Since Easter marks the end of Lent, which traditionally required abstinence from meat, eggs and butter, food plays a large part in celebrations. Traditional Easter foods across Italy vary by region, but usually include lamb or goat and eggs (symbols of renewal), artichokes, and special holiday breads.

Unlike America, you won’t see the Easter Bunny in Italy. However, in the 15th century Italians would color hard-cooked eggs with herbs, flowers and onion skins, a tradition that continues today. But children now are most excited to receive a large hollow chocolate egg with a surprise toy inside.

Growing up in the Piedmontese in Italy, our Easter dinner started with several appetizers including Vitello Tonnato, thinly sliced roasted veal topped with a tuna sauce and

capers; Fritto Misto, a combination of fried meats and offal from veal served with Bagnetto sauce; Antipasto with Sweet Lemon Polenta, (which is served with my Antipasto at Mama Mia’s restaurant); and In Carpione, cod or trout sautéed and marinated in red wine and vinegar agrodolce style, which means sweet and sour.

Our pasta course would be Agnolotti Ravioli, lamb-filled ravioli, served with Al Pin sauce, a roast beef au jus reduction. The main course was roasted leg of lamb and Bollito Misto, a variety of boiled meats served with Bagnetto sauce and garnished with roasted potatoes, glazed carrots and string beans. And we always had the special Easter bread shaped like a dove called Columba di Pasqua.

I love lamb, especially lamb chops, at Easter. Honey Mustard Glazed Rack of Lamb is a favorite family Easter recipe that I also serve on occasion at Mama Mia’s Restaurante. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 lamb rib rack, 7 to 8 ribs (1-1/4 to 2 pounds) 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 3/4 cup fresh white breadcrumbs 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 400°F. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

Rub lamb rack with 1 tablespoon olive oil and sear, fat side down, until browned. Remove lamb from the pan and cool, fat side up, on an aluminum foil lined baking sheet.

Combine honey and mustard; spread over top of cooled lamb rack. Combine breadcrumbs, garlic, parsley, and oregano; stir in 1 to 2 tablespoon olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper until moistened. Gently pat crumb mixture evenly on top of lamb, pressing gently to adhere.

Roast 20 to 25 minutes or until the crumbs are golden brown and the meat registers 120°F for rare or 125°F for medium rare on an instant read thermometer. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and let lamb rest 5 to 8 minutes. Cut the rack into single or double chops and serve.

Living Life As A Juggler

I

don’t know about you, but I have a lot going on. Every day something new gets added to an already crowded calendar.

From chores around the house, to family and work obligations; the list grows longer each day. Or at least it seems that way. At some point, I’m forced to prioritize what gets done now and what can wait. I’m willing to bet your life isn’t much different. Have you ever compared your hectic life to the art of juggling?

I’m reminded of the routine on the old Ed Sullivan Show where the juggler would try to balance spinning plates on the top of a stick, juggling fire sticks and we’d all watch, wondering how it all kept in motion. One misstep and it all crashes down.

It made me think. Maybe some of the principles that apply to juggling can also apply to how you and I can best approach the whirlwind of life.

Here’s what I discovered.

1. The first step in learning to juggle is to become comfortable with what you are juggling. It might be a tennis ball or perhaps a bean bag. But the key is to become familiar with the object. I think likewise you and I have to be familiar and comfortable with

what we have to juggle in our lives.

We have to know what matters most; what is important in the immediate and what can wait.

2. The second step is practicing a rhythm that works until you get it right. We are going to drop a ball here and there. But we have to pick them up and try again until we get comfortable with the rhythm and pacing. It’s really the same with you and me when it comes to life challenges. We have to be in tune with our own rhythm and what works for us. There is not a one size fits all answer. Everyone has a different rhythm.

3. The last key is developing an attitude of patience. Becoming comfortable with the object you’re juggling doesn’t happen overnight. Neither does developing the rhythm necessary to keep all the balls of life in the air at once.

Life isn’t meant to be one long, continual juggling act. But there are seasons where juggling is the only way to get from one stage to the next and if you drop a ball now and then, pick it up and start again. Embrace the "juggle" realizing it’s all part of the rhythm of life.

Cut Back The Sugar Nutrition

educing your sugar intake may affect your body, both physically and mentally.

Reducing your added sugar intake is a great decision to make for a healthier lifestyle. While doing so isn’t always easy, the benefits are worth it, as added sugar has been proven to have negative effects on your body.

High amounts of added sugar intake are associated with various medical conditions, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease as well as poor dental health. Sugar may also reduce your energy levels, leading to fatigue and reduced alertness during the day, and eating sugar may even be a factor in depression. Cutting added sugar from your diet may help protect against chronic disease development and boost your overall health.

Sugar affects the brain’s reward system. This reward system helps humans survive, but it’s also involved in addictive behavior. Unfortunately, sweet foods and drinks stimulate your brain’s reward system, causing you to eat more of the food. Sugar triggers the release of dopamine located in the same area of the brain implicated in the response to addictive drugs. Sugar can also cause the release of endogenous opioids in the brain, which leads to a rush that may cause future cravings. Eating sugar regularly alters your brain so that it becomes tolerant to it, causing you to

require more to get the same effect.

Here’s the scary facts! The average American consumes 22-30 teaspoons (about 88–120 grams) of sugar each day. This is considerably more than the recommended maximum, which is 6 teaspoons (about 24 grams) for females and 9 teaspoons (about 36 grams) for males. Therefore, if your

symptoms and cravings for sugar are likely to be. You may find that your symptoms are worse at certain times of the day, such as between meals.

Stress may trigger cravings for sugar, so you may find that your symptoms feel worse during times of stress.

Cutting added sugar from your diet may lead to a number of emotional

forms of added sugar from their diet is helpful. However, others may find this method too extreme. Fortunately, even making small changes to your sugar intake can significantly affect your overall health.

You must do what works best for you. This may mean slowly cutting out added sugar over time rather than eliminating all sources of added sugar at once.

Giving up or reducing sugar can be difficult, especially if your diet was high in added sugar, so go easy on yourself. Try writing down your motivators for giving up sugar. Look at these when you feel a craving for sugar. If you start adding back foods and beverages high in added sugar, remind yourself of your motivations.

If you find that the cravings are worse during certain times of the day, schedule activities to keep yourself busy during that time, or be prepared with high protein snacks and water.

The most important thing is to decrease your overall intake of added sugar. It’s important to note that occasionally enjoying a sugary treat will not derail your efforts or overall health. It’s your overall diet quality that matters most.

Fighting Covid 19 Misinformation The Light with Raymond Tyler

L

et’s face it. When it comes to Covid-19. The one thing that can be agreed upon is that Covid-19 has been a pain. The pain of death, sickness, loss of income, and freedom has taking a serious toll on all of us. Everything else about Covid-19, people debate .

Misinformation about Covid-19 is nothing to laugh about. I spoke with Shaydanay Urbani, who is First Draft.org’s, Partnerships and Programs Manager in New York, where she covers disinformation and trains journalists internationally in verification and responsible reporting. One of the problems Ms. Urbani sites is “some of the mis-information may actually have a kernel of truth.” Ms. Urbani discussed how some “news sites” have picked up on the small percentages of people that have

gotten sick from Covid-19 vaccines and are trying to paint a narrative that the vaccine isn’t safe. The fact remains that the vaccine is saving lives. Most people have little to no reaction from the vaccine. Those that are affected usually come down with a low grade fever for a short time that can be treated with Tylenol. It is also a fact that nation wide at this moment unvaccinated people are dying at a rate of about 1,000 people per day.

Ms. Urbani also pointed out that one of the biggest sources of mis-Information is Facebook groups, especially those that target minorities.

Some of these groups target people that speak other languages than English. According to Ms. Urbani people from other countries may not read or write English or comprehend the jargon as reported around Covid 19 in some mainstream/verified news sources.(Don’t feel bad. I have covered Covid since day zero and I have to ask experts to explain again.) So for some reason there are Facebook communities and groups that can speak to people in their native language, however, the information can be wrong. Here’s what I say about that:

A. VERIFY. Research is not fun but neither is suffering from bad information. The CDC is still the best source we have for Covid-19 information.

B. If you are blessed to speak a language other than English? Consider sharing accurate information in that language. Medium.com is an excellent resource to share information.

As always you still have to be aware of fraud. There are “experts” everywhere with “herbal supplements” and “natural remedies.”

Many people have indeed had their health and lives improved by eating better, more physical activity, proper rest and adding natural supplements to their diet. (I like to think I am one of these people.) However, when someone tells you that their shake, powder or pill can keep you from getting Covid-19, that is fraud pure and simple. Frankly, some people will tell you it cures the common cold and hypochondria if it separates you from your cash. Again, let me be clear on 2 things: Number one, I do believe drinking alkaline water is much better than Mountain Dew. Number two, there is no proven scientific prevention for Covid-19 that

beats the vaccines that are being made available.

Fake News: April Fools Hoaxes by Newspapers The Monster of Deadman’s Hole (1888)

The San Diego Union reported that two hunters had killed a bizarre, half-human half-animal beast in an outof-the-way location called Deadman's Hole northwest of San Diego. The creature was said to have the body of a bear, but stood upright like a man and had a human face. The hunters were reportedly bringing the body into the city for public exhibit. The next day the paper boasted, "throughout the day the police station was visited by a number of persons who were anxious to view the body of the strange being that was reported killed. They were told to come in next April Fool's day and see it."

Price Cut (1915)

Readers of the Boston Morning Globe could have purchased their papers for half the cost on April Fool's Day, if they had been alert. The price listed on the front page had been lowered from "Two Cents Per Copy" to

"One Cent." When the management of the Globe found out about the change, they were just as surprised as everyone else. The new price turned out to be the responsibility of a mischievous production worker who had inserted the lower value at the last minute as the paper went to print.

Philly’s Sea Monster (1936)

Daily Courier showed a photo of a large sinkhole that had reportedly formed at a busy intersection downtown. The crater was estimated to be 45 feet deep. The picture fooled many readers, despite the "April Fool" notation in the caption.

Eiffel Tower Moves (1986)

Talking Pelican (1979)

The Sunday News-Journal in Daytona Beach reported the discovery of a talking pelican, found by a Georgia tourist, Sam P. Suggins. The pelican asked him for a fish as he was walking along a dock. Unfortunately, the pelican would not talk to anyone else.

Le Parisien newspaper reported that an agreement had been signed to take down the Eiffel Tower and move it to the new Euro Disney theme park being constructed east of Paris.

The Philadelphia Record ran a picture titled, "Deep Sea Monster Visits Philadelphia." Although modern viewers have little difficulty in spotting the picture as a fake, it fooled many of the Record's readers.

April Fools Day has a lengthy history

W

hat do you get when have a select group of people who didn't get the memo that the calendar had been modified and the start of the New Year was now pushed back by three months? April Fools' Day, that's what. Although the tomfoolery that occurs each April 1 may not feel very old, April Fools' Day traces its origins back several centuries.

One legend states that April Fools' Day originated in the 1500s and has remained a day for hijinks ever since. Prior to the 1500s, the western world relied on the Julian calendar to keep track of time.

According to the Julian calendar, years began on March 25. However, since March 25 fell during Holy Week, the new year festivities were pushed back to the first day of April. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII decreed the adoption of the Gregorian calendar,which switched New Year's Day from the end of March to January 1.

Many people were informed of this change, yet those who lived in rural areas or had not heard about the calendar change continued to celebrate the arrival of the new year on April 1. These people were mocked, and some people in the know would try to confuse people into thinking that April 1 was still New Year's Day and they were receiving a New Year's visit. From this tradition grew the one that is observed today, with people trying to fool unsuspecting individuals with all methods of pranks and trickery. In France, jokes may have involved placing paper fish on the backs of the gullible. These poisson d'avril (April fish)symbolized a

young, easily caught fish, or someone who was easily pranked.

Others suggest April Fools' Day is connected to pagan festivals celebrated during the change of seasons. On Hilaria, Romans would dress up in disguises.

Some historians speculate that April Fools' Day is connected to the vernal equinox, when people were fooled with unpredictable weather.

April Fools' antics eventually spread outside of France to Britain, and then around the world. While pranks were once simplistic in nature, many are now more intricate. According to Snopes, a popular April Fools' hoax dates back to 1957 when the BBC convinced its audience that spring would arrive early, and with it, an early spaghetti harvest in Switzerland. Video showed peasant women harvesting spaghetti from trees, now that the ravenous spaghetti weevil, which had caused havoc to past harvests, was finally defeated. The station received scores of calls asking to view the harvest or inquiring how they could get a spaghetti plant.

In 1996 in the United States, the popular fast food chain Taco Bell convinced the public that it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia's Liberty Bell and wanted to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell.

In 2016, the Texas state comptroller's office announced that redback paper money would be reissued in the state for the first time since 1840 Ñ and it would feature Willie Nelson's face on the $10 bill.

April Fools' jokes have evolved throughout the centuries. Although the exact origins cannot be accurately pinpointed, the fun ensues nevertheless.

19th Annual Garden State Film Festival

ix Days, Nine Venues and 300 Films comprised the 2021 globally recognized Garden State Film Festival (GSFF).

The event which was held March 23 -28, 2021 is considered the most respected Premier Independent Film Festival on the East Coast.

This years festival presented a combination of hybrid and selected live events and screenings to the various venues in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The GSFF moved to Asbury Park a few years ago after considering Atlantic City their home for a number of years.

As the word got out about the GSFF more and more producers, directors, actors, investors, distributors and industry talents took the opportunity to be a part of this extremely exciting and popular Film Festival. It continued to grow and

Detours and delays are part of the deal for long-term Parkway project Bridge overpass work to allow for wider shoulders on the road

raveling through Egg Harbor Township was more difficult last winter, both on and off the Garden State Parkway, as a project to widen the parkway slowed southbound traffic and caused delays on roads heading under the highway.

Mill Road, Zion Road, Steelmanville Road and Ocean Heights Avenue have seen detours due to the project, often with one lane closed and alternating traffic on the other. Mill Road was detoured in both directions for several weeks.

The latest detours, announced on March 27, were set to be in place until early April, but the overall project will

continue much longer.

Started last year, the project is scheduled to be completed in June of 2023, according to Tom Feeney, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

The project is not adding lanes to the Parkway, he said. The right and left shoulders are being widened to 12 feet on both the northbound and southbound lanes, and the acceleration and deceleration lanes will be lengthened for the northbound entrance and southbound exit at Exit 30.

Lighting there will also be improved, and eight bridges over local roads are being reconstructed.

The work has meant those heading south on the Parkway face reduced speeds and a travel lane narrowed by a protective concrete wall often called a Jersey barrier.

According to a public presentation on the project made in April of 2020, the improvements to the Parkway bridges over the four county

roads include a wider left shoulder to accommodate a potential future widening of the road, and increase the clearances to meet current standards.

The horizontal distance between the abutment will also be increased at Ocean Heights Avenue and Mill Road.

The public presentation stated that two travel lanes will be open on the Parkway at all times throughout the project, with short-term detours on local roads expected for the bridge work. The eastbound lane on Mill Road was set to be closed for 19 months.

Last year, Egg Harbor Township administrator Peter Miller raised concerns about the condition of Old Zion Road, set to take far more traffic due to the detours. The Turnpike Authority repaved the road in October at a cost of $325,000, according to Feeney.

He indicated the crews are working to minimize traffic delays. For instance, changes were made while the Mill Road underpass was completely closed to traffic.

“The construction folks have noticed delays eastbound on Zion Road in the mornings. The timing of the traffic light at the intersection of Bargaintown and Old Zion roads has been changed to minimize those

delays,” he wrote in an emailed response to questions about the project.

Some residents have expressed frustration with the delays, including a local man who posted to a social media page dedicated to Egg Harbor Township in February that it took him 40 minutes to get under the Parkway.

The roadway bisects the township.

While the far busier roadways in the commercial district like Tilton Road were not impacted by the work, other posters complained about the inconvenience and length of the project.

Not everyone took issue, however. One person wrote that he had to wait 5 to 7 minutes at Zion Road.

“I don’t think it was that bad,” he posted.

No one responded to a message left at Egg Harbor Township Hall requesting comment from the administrator or the mayor on the topic.

While there have been some comments posted to social media, there does not appear to be much of an outcry about the inconvenience of the project. Several businesses and residents in the area either declined to comment for this story or did not respond to messages.

There have been a few voices critical of the project. A resident of the nearby Lakeside Estates raised concern about runoff at the 2019 public hearing, and Jeff Tittel, the director of the New Jersey’s chapter to the Sierra Club, has been skeptical of road widening projects in general.

“What we have found over the years is that adding more lanes to highways just creates wider parking lots,” he said. The multilane roads are still leading to the same exits or local roadways. “Look at the Turn-

The updates are not solely about the Parkway project, with cautions also posted about other detours and delays, including the closure and replacement of the Cotton Mill Bridge in Mays Landing and the closure of

Tittel suggested improvements to public transportation or working toward the return of rail service to the towns of the Jersey Shore would be a better long-term investment.

Tittel, who recently announce his retirement as the director of the state chapter, did not oppose any investments in roadways.

“We’re not planning enough for sea level rise or doing enough about it. That whole section above Port Republic goes underwater pretty regularly,” he said.

A bridge replacement is planned on New York Avenue. On March 24, the county issued a notice to proceed on design work for a replacement, the first step in replacing the bridge. That bridge over Gravelly Run between Reega Avenue and Route 40 was closed in February after an inspection found signs of structural damage. That damage was confirmed by an engineering dive team.

Earth Month is the New Earth Day at ACUA – Free Virtual Events for All Ages Throughout April

T

he Atlantic County Utilities Authority’s Annual Earth Day Celebration has moved online this year. ACUA invites everyone to join them for free virtual events offered throughout the entire month of April. “Each day we plan to offer free online tours, videos, presentations, demonstrations and activities for kids, students and adults,” ACUA president Rick Dovey noted. “While we certainly miss being able to bring everyone together for what has come to be South Jersey’s largest Earth Day event, we’re very pleased to be able to offer entertainment, workshops and great environmental information during the month of April. Participants will recognize some of the organizations and performers featured online from our in-person Earth Day at ACUA, including past sponsors like Atlantic City Electric, South Jersey Gas and Atlanticare,” Dovey added.

“ACUA’s Earth Day Festival is really special. We wanted to be able to bring a lot of the fun along with the opportunity to learn new things for our virtual Earth Month. There’s so much we would normally include, there was no way we could fit it into one day,” said Amy Menzel, ACUA Communications Manager. “While it’s not the same as coming to the festival at our

Lucy the Elephant: Fake Elephant, True Story

T

he year is 1881. Atlantic City is beginning to boom with tourists coming for the healing powers of the sea breeze and the spectacular scenery.

Real estate in AC, as you can imagine, was getting snatched up quick by opportunistic business men. Enter our hero, James V. Lafferty.

At only 25 years old, Lafferty arrived in Margate, a stretch of land five miles outside of AC, with plans to make a fortune on real estate. So, to get customers to come and check out the surrounding area, Lafferty had to come up with something big. And he did. Literally.

Construction quickly began on the elephant-shaped building (not yet known as Lucy) and became the talk of the town. The purpose of the building was to be Lafferty’s office where potential clients could come up and actually look out on the land and see the opportunity. The only windows out to the land were through the elephant’s eyes which was just the cherry on top of this wild idea. Word quickly spread since it sat near the beach in the view of sailors coming in to the ports. People would show up out of curiosity and Lafferty would try and sell them. So, everybody came

to see it and Lafferty got rich. The end, right? Nope!

The truth is that Lafferty’s business fell apart. In addition to some

been used as a tavern, hotel, restaurant and even a party venue. Owners came and went, the community grew and grew and history changed

of his other properties, Lafferty was forced to sell the building in 1887. It wasn’t until 1900 that the Margate elephant became known as Lucy the Elephant, and over the years, it had

all around as Lucy sat on the beach, not getting the kind of attention that was originally intended. By the 1960s, Lucy was a mess and was scheduled for demolition. The end.

Enter Edwin T. Carpenter and a group of citizens called the Margate Civic Association, our new heroes.

They were told to either move Lucy or it would be torn down. Oh, and they only had 30 days to move it. This rag-tag group of concerned community members went door-to-door and held fund-raising events, eventually raising enough money to move Lucy.

Then, in 1970, the Margate elephant was moved to where it is today. Lucy also got refurbished since the original wooden frame was falling apart.

To make matters even better, Lucy was designated a National Historic Landmark.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of AC and surrounding areas pretty hard. Many are still putting their lives back together after significant damage to their homes and businesses. Margate was right in Sandy’s warpath, however – here comes the best part of the story – Lucy the Elephant went unharmed.

This only adds to (let’s get emotional here for a minute) Lucy’s symbolic status of the strength and spirit of Atlantic City. What started as just a business venture has turned into a reminder of what really made AC a resort: imagination.

elcome to April! Boy, if it feels like I just wrote last week, that’s because I did!

Before I forget though, let me wish you and your families a very Happy Passover and Easter holiday. Here’s hoping that you all get some deserved time off and the weather cooperates so you can get outside. Oh, and as far as that “holiday” on 4-1, please know that I’m not FOOLIN’..!!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles shocked everyone when they agreed to move DOWN from #6 to #12 in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Birds will also be adding a game to their regular season schedule next season. The Phillies have come up North to begin a regular 162 game season. However, their final roster decisions are, shall we say, interesting! The Flyers are also tinkering with their roster as the NHL trade deadline is right around the corner. A veteran defenseman is shown the door. Finally, the Sixers continue to miss their big man, and their trade deadline acquisition has yet to play a game, but no one with the Sixers is hitting the panic button just yet. On the local front, a baseball player with local ties

makes an appearance at Phillies spring training. Another heads down to Florida for the extended spring training and to see where the Phillies want him to pitch this season.

From entertainment, I stumbled across a drama on Showtime that I think I will probably binge watch over spring break. I also found a cool documentary on Netflix that takes me back to Friday & Saturday nights in the 90’s and early 2000’s. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Let’s start with the Eagles as my phone was blowing up on Friday March 26th right after the news dropped that the Birds were moving BACK in the upcoming NFL draft from six down to twelve. My first reaction was one of disappointment, as I felt like at six, even Howie Roseman couldn’t mess up that pick! However, upon further reflection, the move makes sense to me as the Eagles have a litany of issues, and one player is not going to fix them all. ● Here are the details, as the Eagles move back six spots in the first round of next month’s NFL draft and add a first-round pick in 2022 after trading the No. 6 selection to the Miami Dolphins for the 12th pick. The Dolphins had traded back from the third spot to the 12th in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers earlier, a deal that netted Miami an extra first-rounder in each of the next two drafts as well as a

third-rounder next year. Shortly after the trade with the Niners was reported, the Dolphins agreed to send the Eagles the 12th and 123rd picks in this year’s draft along with their first-rounder next year for the Eagles’ sixth and 156th picks.

When the smoke clears, there’s a good possibility that the Eagles will have three first-rounders in next year’s draft, depending on whether the conditional pick they get from the Indianapolis Colts in the Carson Wentz trade conveys as a first- or second-rounder. The pick will be a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75% of the Colts’ offensive snaps next season, or 70% if Indy makes the playoffs. If Wentz doesn’t play the required percentage of snaps, the pick will be a second-rounder.

Which means now our attention turns to who the Eagles might get at #12 as opposed to #6. I was all about Florida TE Kyle Pitts, but it’s likely he’ll be gone by the time the Birds select now. In fact, I’m okay if the Eagles look on the defensive side of the ball with their first round pick. Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons would look good in Eagle green, so would Jaycee Horn or Caleb Farley, cornerbacks from South Carolina and Virginia Tech respectively. Of course, the Birds haven’t drafted a linebacker in the first round since 1979, and Parsons ran a 4.39 in the 40 during Penn State’s

Pro Day, so he might be gone by 12. Or, I might be completely wrong and they go for DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle, wide receivers from Alabama. The 2021 NFL draft begins on Thursday April 29th.

One other Eagles note, as the NFL owners have added a 17th game to the regular season schedule starting in 2021.

This is a good news / bad news scenario I think for the Eagles. The good news is, that the 17th game reportedly will be against the Jets, the NFL’s worst club.

It’s the closest thing to a “sure-win” the Eagles could ask for. Meanwhile, the rest

of the NFC East will visit the good teams that populate the rest of the AFC East.

Washington goes to 13-win Buffalo, the Giants to 10-win Miami, the Cowboys to seven-win New England. The bad news is: the Eagles are top-heavy on their roster with players 30 or older. Jason Kelce is 33, Brandon Graham is also 33, Brandon Brooks is 32, Lane Johnson turns 31 in May, Darius Slay is now 30, and so is Fletcher Cox. That’s six KEY players age 30 or older, where a 17th game adds the risk of injury, etc.

Since we’re on age, Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper is now 28 years old, and he’s never won a playoff series. That’s right, Harper has never been past the divisional round of the postseason in his major league baseball career. He’s hoping that might change with the Phillies, but if they’re going to make the playoffs this season, they’re going to have to earn it. The entire NL East looks “loaded for bear”, as the Braves, Mets, Nationals and even the Marlins seem to be improved.

The Phillies have gone nine seasons without making the playoffs or even posting a winning record. Can they end that streak in 2021? Well, consider this…the Phillies have the longest streak in the National League without sniffing the postseason.

The only team in baseball that has gone longer without a playoff berth is the Seattle Mariners.

and the manager, says “I think our lineup from top to bottom is as good as any lineup in the National League East. We are going to score runs and I really like our three pitchers at the top. I like the two pitchers we picked up, too.”

The top of the rotation is formed by Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and Zach Eflin.

The two new additions are veteran freeagent signings Matt Moore and Chase Anderson. The bullpen appears to be much-improved with newcomers Archie Bradley and Brandon Kintzler, along with Sam Coonrod & Jose Alvarado. Also returning are Connor Brogdon, Hector Neris, David Hale, and long man Vince Velasquez.

And then there’s the regular lineup and the bench. Outfielder Odubel Herrera did NOT make the big league roster to start the season. The Phillies will platoon Adam Haseley and Roman Quinn in CF. Team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters that the decision came down to at-bats, and

not optics. According to Dombrowski, “You’re talking about somebody who had 50 spring-training at-bats over a couple years. It’s going to be tough for him to be consistent at this point. For us, it was better for him to go out and play on an everyday basis and see what happens over the next time period.” The Phillies begin a 162-game regular season at home with Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday April 1st.

We’ll switch to the ice now, where if the playoffs began tomorrow, the Flyers would be on the OUTSIDE looking in.

There’s no question the area of greatest need for the Orange & Black right now is on defense, and GM Chuck Fletcher made a bold move by putting defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere on waivers on March 30th. This move seems to signal that the Flyers are trying to free up salary cap space to make a major deal, but as of the writing of this column, no deal has been announced yet.

No matter what, it’s an inglorious end for the player they call “Ghost”. He turns 28 on April 20th but you have to remember how he started his career in Philly. He exploded on the scene in 2015 when he scored two overtime game-winning goals making him the first Flyers rookie to score multiple winners in a season. This season, he’s had a complete “elevator ride” as he’s gone from the top pairing to a healthy scratch, back to the top pairing down to the third pairing, and from the

third pairing ultimately to the waiver wire.

By the time I write my next column, let’s see if either Nashville’s Mattias Ekholm (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) or Columbus’ David Savard (6-2, 233) are in a Flyers uniform. They are both 30-year-old defensemen who are on the market and would certainly help the Flyers. The only question is, what will the Flyers have to give up?

Since we’re talking defense, you can’t help but smile at the ending to the Flyers game the other day at home against the Rangers. 25-year-old Samuel Morin scored his first NHL goal, and it proved to be the game-winner against New York.

No matter how the season ends, this was a nice scene as every player on the ice mobbed Morin, knowing how special that goal was. You see, Morin has had to overcome two torn ACL’s in his right knee, and a handful of other injuries that might’ve sent a lesser player into retirement. He even overcame a brief position switch to left wing. Because of all the injuries, Morin played in just 28 games — eight with the Flyers, 20 with the AHL’s Phantoms — over the previous three seasons.

But there he was the other day, scoring the game winner and getting the puck to give to his parents Pascal and Sylvie Morin. Thanks to Flyers PR guy Zack Hill for the picture of Sam with the puck in the dressing room afterwards.

For pro sports, I’ll close with the Sixers, as they picked up a point guard at the trade deadline, just NOT the one everyone thought they were targeting.

The Sixers acquired George Hill in a three-team trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New York Knicks.

Philadelphia native and Villanova alum Kyle Lowry, remains with the Toronto Raptors.

Hill is 34-years-old, and is still rehabbing from thumb surgery that he had on February 2nd. According to Sixers coach Doc Rivers, “George Hill doesn’t have to do a rehearsal for us to find out if he can and play or not. We know exactly what he does.” Rivers did say though, that he hopes the 13-year veteran gets a little run prior to the playoffs, saying “now, hopefully, we have a 10-game window or more that he can get acclimated with the team, but I’m very confident that he can fit.”

The injury to Hill is described as a mallet finger injury. Joel Embiid has missed time with a left knee bone bruise, but hopefully Embiid is back soon. Things would be better if Dwight Howard could manage to avoid getting EJECTED from games! Howard had a rough time in Los Angeles, getting ejected after the first quarter of a 109-101 win over the Lakers. He was then ejected with 10 minutes and 35 seconds left in a 122-112 loss to the Clippers. As of the writing of this column, he has 13 technical fouls.

Any player with 16 unsportsmanlike technical fouls in the regular season is suspended for one game. It’s not being dramatic to state that Howard has to become a little more mature and unselfish. Especially with Embiid still out with that knee injury.

I have two local sports items to close this portion of things, and they both have to do with Phillies baseball. First, I was watching a spring training game the other day and the starter, Matt Moore, left the ballgame in the first inning. #97 Zach Warren came in to replace him and my ears perked up when Phillies play by play guy Tom McCarthy announced that the 6-5 left-hander was a 2014 St. Augustine Prep graduate. The Phillies selected the Vineland native in the 2017 draft, and he was invited to camp as one of 18 non-roster, mini-camp participants. He’s likely to start the season in the minor leagues, but major props to a local guy for making it to a few big league spring training games and also for appearing on my TV…!

The second pitcher I will be tracking actively is one I’ve written about before, and that’s Mike Adams. The 26-yearold Egg Harbor Township resident was at the airport in Philly the other day, leaving for Clearwater, Florida and extended spring training before he should be assigned to one of the team’s minor-league affiliates. Because of COVID-19, the minor leagues are dif-

ferent now, and the Phillies have minor league teams in Clearwater, Lakewood, Reading and Allentown. Wouldn’t it be great to see Adams get PAID to pitch in Lakewood, Reading or Lehigh Valley?

Thanks to his mother Joan for the picture. ● As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I recently discovered “City on a Hill” on SHOWTIME and can’t wait for the upcoming spring break to binge watch the first ten episodes. Kevin Bacon stars as corrupt FBI agent Jackie Rohr. The series is set in Boston in the early 1990s when the city was rife with violent criminals, emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption, tribalism, and "taking it to the street" were the norm—until it all suddenly changed. I’ve only seen one episode and I’m already HOOKED. ● Plus, the other night on NETFLIX, I came across a wonderful documentary called “The Last Blockbuster”. It’s a 2020 documentary film about the last Blockbuster store located in Bend, Oregon. Remember going to Blockbuster on a Friday or Saturday night to pick out a movie? Heck, are you like me and do you remember going to your small Mom & Pop video rental place in the 80’s?

Blockbuster wiped those out, and then Netflix basically wiped out Blockbuster! This one is totally worth the watch, running at a quick hour and 26 minutes.

You won’t be disappointed!

I’ll close with my reminder to keep wearing those masks and staying socially distant please. Vaccines continue to be given out in New Jersey with more and more people getting vaccinated every day. I’m fortunate enough to announce that I am now “fully vaccinated” and I hope that you will do the same. Hopefully “normal” is coming soon!

he Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ), AtlantiCare and UNITE HERE Local 54 announced that Atlantic City casino workers began receiving COVID-19 vaccinations today at the Atlantic County COVID-19 Vaccination Megasite. Governor Murphy opened up eligibility to hospitality workers across the state as of March 29. The three organizations are working together to prioritize vaccinating approximately 25,000 casino employees by Memorial Day.

After arriving in Newark, he purchased a small wagon that he could pull, and some provisions for the trip, including a sheet of canvas for a tent, a rifle and some ammunition for hunting and protection, and the best map he could find. He neatly packed everything that he owned, including recipes and his prized spice pouches for his sausages, and the things he’d just purchased into the wagon, and began his journey on foot through the wild, unknown Pinelands, southwest to Philadelphia.

About twenty days into the journey, just outside of a little town known as Iron Forge (now Chatsworth), as he was starting his fire and setting up his canvas tent, getting ready to bed down for another cold, black night in the Pines, he saw a coyote that was holding something in it’s mouth watching him.

Unafraid, he called and motioned to the coyote, “Come to me. Come to me.

I will not harm you, little friend, come here, please.”

Amazingly, the coyote trusted Gunter, and slowly and cautiously, approached Gunter, who was now sitting on the back of his wagon. He saw that the coyote had a piece of deer meat in his jaws, which he dropped at Gunter’s feet.

“For me?” Gunter laughed. “Is that a gift for me? Ahhh, thank you!”

Gunter reached down and patted the coyote’s head. They’d become friends instantly.

“Now, go get me some more scraps of meat”, Gunter half-heartedly commanded. “and, I shall call you Fetzen from now on.”

Dutifully, to Gunter’s surprise, Fetzen came back again and again with ripped scraps of meats from the forest.

Some deer, some rabbit. Some that were a mystery. Before long, they had quite a collection of meats.

“We shall wrap these meats in a

piece of canvas I will fashion like a long sock, and smoke them over the fire here”, Gunter told Fetzen. “What we don’t wrap, we shall boil and store in a hole you and I will dig to keep it all cooled down over night”.

The process worked perfectly.

Gunter would cut and sew strips of canvas into a long tube with one end sewn shut, stuff it tightly with finely-minced scraps of meat, sew it closed, and hang it over his fire, smoking and preserving the meats for later use. What he didn’t stuff into the canvas, he boiled down into a thick, porridge-like consistency, covered the pot, and buried it in a hole he and Fetzen would dig over night.

The next morning, it was congealed and solid, and easily sliced and fried.

Gunter and Fetzen took some of their meat products into the little town and began selling it to the folks that lived there. Everyone loved these new meat delicacies that had never been seen or tasted before. They invited Gunter and Fetzen to stay in Iron Forge and become friends and neighbors, though they felt sorry that Gunter could speak no English, and they had a hard time communicating with him.

They started referring to him as “that poor Mr. Grohl” Gunter decided it would suit him to stay in Iron Forge instead of continuing to Philadelphia. He built a cabin, and set up a more elaborate shop than he had out in the wilds. As more and more people bought and enjoyed his products, his operation grew and grew. He and Fetzen became loved and revered far and wide in and around Iron Forge, and it was many a customer, for years and years, that traveled great distances to get their meat from “Poor Grohl”, either wrapped in the canvas, or that which was made in the scrap hole.

To this very day, folks still enjoy pork roll (Poor Grohl) and/or scrapple (scrap hole) for breakfast in the Pines.

Many Opting For A Green Burial (Part One)

n today's modem world oftexting, online shopping and dinner being delivered to your door by DoorDash it seems there is no limit to how the very basics of life have changed in the past years. Instant gratification and convenience dominate our society as every industry struggles to make the product and/or service faster, better and cheaper. The Funeral industry is no different, coming up with better ways to properly memorialize your loved one with online funeral services and different cremation options to make things cleaner and fitting. But there is a segment of the population that looks for, if not yearns for a simpler way of honoring their loved one. This method is actually a return to a more traditional way of final disposition that are ancestors followed. Today this method has been dubbed Green Burial!

What is green burial? Many have never heard of it before. Put simply green burial is a natural way of laying a deceased loved one to rest without a lot of modem traditional methods that are not environmentally friendly. To better understand what green burial is it is important to understand what the traditional methods of disposition are.

First, there is traditional burial which many people are familiar with. This method consists of usually embalming the deceased with a chemical solution of formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde.

Then the deceased is dressed, has cosmetics put on and placed in a metal or wooden casket for a public viewing and service. Following the service the loved one is taken to a cemetery for burial and this usually consists of placing the casket in a concrete or metal vault in the ground.

Once the casket is in the vault, the vault lid is placed on and then both the vault and casket are covered over with earth. The grave is then traditionally marked with a monument of some kind denoting the location of the deceased. Now what was just described is the standard type of traditional burial service but there are many variations of this such as graveside services to crypt entombment but that is another article for another time.

The second method is cremation services. Cremation services are wide

and varied and also deserve a thorough discussion on their own, however, the common theme in all of the different types of cremation is the loved one is taken to a facility known as a crematory and the deceased's remains are reduced to ash through a process using extreme heat. The ashes are then held onto by the family in an um, scattered via a scattering urn or buried in an urn.

Both traditional burial and cremation are very common methods of final disposition in our society but many have pointed out that both are not good for the environment and many more do not find personal value in these types of services. Traditional burial with embalming uses chemicals to.preserve the deceased but these chemicals are a carcinogen and can be dangerous to both the embalmer and possibly the environment. Also, there are many who don't feel the need or want to be embalmed and want to return to the earth naturally. Some people are concerned about the use of land for

cemetery space and are concerned about the carbon footprint left behind when a casket or vault is placed in the ground. In regards to cremation the amount of energy needed to cremate an individual is large but more importantly is the amount of particle's that are created from a cremation which is quite numerous. It is because of these two facts that make cremation not environmentally friendly at all. Based on all of this Green Burial is becoming very favorable for those with environmental concerns and/or want a very simple method of disposition.

So, again Green Burial, also known as natural burial is a way of caring for the dead with minimal environmental impact that aids in the conservation of natural resources, reduction of carbon emissions, protection of worker health and the restoration and/or preservation of habitat. Green burial necessitates the use of non-toxic and biodegradable materials such wicker/bamboo caskets, linen and cotton cloths or shrouds.

AtlantiCare breaks ground on Medical Arts Pavilion in Atlantic City

tlantiCare ceremoniously broke ground today on a $38.3 million Medical Arts Pavilion in Atlantic City. The healthcare system purposely held the event on National Doctor’s Day to highlight the significance of the care and services it will provide in the new facility. The three-story, 69,700-squarefoot building will significantly expand AtlantiCare’s resources for increasing access to care and addressing healthcare disparities. AtlantiCare will also expand Medical Education opportunities for medical students and residents to proactively address the current state and anticipated national shortage of primary care providers.

“The AtlantiCare Medical Arts Pavilion will be a modern, patient-centered facility,” said AtlantiCare President and CEO Lori Herndon, MBA, BSN, RN. “This new building will give us the space we need to expand the care and services we provide to our community.”

“The location is special because Ohio Avenue is where we opened as Atlantic City’s first hospital in 1898 in a converted house,” said Herndon.

Known as Atlantic City Hospital, it grew into the regional healthcare system AtlantiCare, whose more than 6,000 staff and providers care for the community in more than 100 locations in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May and Ocean counties of southern New Jersey.

AtlantiCare’s Medical Arts Pavilion will place strong focus on combatting two significant challenges in healthcare.

One is closing the gap of healthcare disparities in underserved populations.

The new facility will house a significant suite of services for women, children and families—providing services that are critical to preventing maternal and fetal deaths and supporting health and well-being of families.

AtlantiCare is also taking a proactive approach to addressing the shortage of primary care providers in New

heriff Eric Scheffler has announced the retirement of Clerk III Supervisor Sherri Giberson after 38 years of service to Atlantic County. Giberson began her career as a typist and still holds the record for most words typed in a minute. As years passed Sherri worked her way up through the ranks to her current position of Supervisor III. “I cannot tell you how much she

will be missed” Scheffler said. He continued by saying over the years Sherri has helped thousands of people navigate their way through the Civil Process System that can be very confusing.

In her retirement, Giberson who resides in Egg Harbor Township with her husband George, plans to spend time visiting her daughter, husband and granddaughter who reside in Texas.
