After Fire, Playland Rides Again

L

ess than two months after a massive fire tore through the arcade section and entranceway of the popular amusement park on the Ocean City Boardwalk, Playland set is set to open this weekend.

Officials determined that the January 30th fire was caused by an electrical source. The arcade, offices, and the famous pirate ship on the roof were destroyed, but the rides were untouched.

"We anticipate about 20 rides to be open in the coming weeks," said Brian Hartley, vice president of Playland's Castaway Cove.

"That is what we typically have open this time of year" There will be a separate entrance to the amusement park until the demolition is complete. Visitors will be directed to enter in the middle of the block between 10th and 11th

"When it does, it likely would take just a couple of weeks to remove the rubble.

Our plan for this summer is to try to get decking down and people go through that same entranceway," explained Hartley.

"For this summer, there is not going to be an arcade or storefronts”, he added. “Still,we are excited to get back open and back to a little bit of normalcy," he said. “It’s been a struggle, but we are making it through.” Hartley said he is often asked about rebuilding the iconic pirate ship at the entrance. “Yes, a bigger and better pirate ship will be back. We will be soon announcing our plans”

I

love everything about spring: hearing the birds singing outside my window in the mornings, the longer days, the feeling of sunshine on my skin and all those flower buds pushing up through the earth.

Spring always puts a skip in my step! This year even more so because there is a feeling of optimism in the air; dare I say, a light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines are more readily available and AtlantiCare just marked their 100,000th vaccine dose administered at the mega-site in Atlantic City. More children are attending in-person school. Live entertainment and events are coming back.

This is not to say that we will chuck our masks in the trash anytime soon or life will be as it was pre-pandemic. Somethings are SO life-changing that it divides the way we see time. I believe the pandemic will be one of those things. There was life before and life after. The trials we go through change us.

This was the case with my grandmother. She hated to spend money.

We used to joke that she still had her "recess money" at the age of 90.

She would be truly horrified if she ever saw the way I can waste money. Grammy lived through the Great Depression and that changed her, influencing her perspective and that of an entire generation.

I believe it will be similar for us, having lived through the last 12 months of quarantine, loss of loved ones, jobs, and financial security.

I can already see myself passing out hand sanitizer and face masks to my grandchildren in 20 years, "just in case." I will never view germs, viruses and immunity the same.

I do believe we will get through this fully and life will return to "normal" albeit a more cautious, altered version of normal. Large crowds may always set off some alarm bells in our heads. That's not necessarily a bad thing either. Experts say there has been a great reduction in colds and flu this year as result of our new

Folks are pouring into our area because they now realize they can live near the beach and work on their computer. Second homeowners are making our region their primary home. I’ve heard the term coined "newbies" as opposed to "shoobies". As a result, our home values are skyrocketing. Check out Elisa Jo Eagan's real estate feature on page 18 in this issue.

For all that the pandemic took from us, it forced to be creative!

Cruise: A Drive-Thru Artistic Experience is an innovative transformation of the parking garage at the Noyes Arts Museum into an immersive art

experience unlike anything that has been seen before. Read about it on page 8-9. We are so fortunate to be the pilot city for this production that is running in Atlantic City through April 5th.

You're probably familiar with the old adage that little people can do big things. Hometown Hero, Carter Doorley is the perfect example of just that, at 10 years old and he is making major waves and riding them too!

Unlike other seasons, spring symbolizes new growth. It is a great time to appreciate not only the budding leaves and flowers, but also to take a look at how we have grown in our own lives throughout the last year.

Dry, Windy Weather a Recipe For Forest Fires

S

pring officially arrived last weekend, and with it comes the gradually warmer and longer days that serve as the prelude to summer. Meteorologically speaking, late March through late May is one of the quieter times of the year in South Jersey weather-wise.

We're past the prime coastal storm season, and our severe storm season doesn't usually activate until the heat and humidity regularly visit our region, usually starting in June. We don't have to worry about the tropics until then either, as hurricane season doesn't begin until June 1st each year.

In fact, the biggest concern in South Jersey over the next few months is dry weather. Well, it's the combination of prolonged dry weather, gusty winds, and low relative humidity, which when combined just

right is the perfect recipe for forest fires. And the South Jersey Pinelands, while a local ecological and natural treasure, can offer prime breeding ground for occasionally intense fires, given a perfect storm of conditions and ingredients. While our fire season thankfully pales in comparison to those out west in terms of acreage, intensity, and longevity, South Jersey forest fires can prove destructive to property and harmful to both local residents and those fighting any fires.

Before moving to South Jersey in 2002, I actually knew little about forest fires. How they started. How they spread. How to effectively fight them. How to forecast for them. And I certainly didn't think New Jersey had a legitimate fire season, instead thinking such a thing was limited to the more notorious areas out in the Western United States. Furthermore, I didn't have a full appreciation for the critical role weather conditions played in fighting a fire. It's not something they taught in college. But all that changed after spending a few fire seasons in South Jersey, and more specifically, spending a week-

end near the front lines of a fire.

Being on location during a large Ocean County wildfire back around 2010, providing a "nowcast" of precise winds, temperatures, and relative humidity levels, was a humbling and eye-opening experience for a young meteorologist. First and foremost, it gave me a new appreciation of what firefighters deal with. Personally, it reinforced the importance of the science I love, meteorology, and how vital an accurate, localized forecast can be in a crucial situation. Similar to tracking a tornado that is on the ground and trying to warn those that may be in its future path, forest fire forecasting is just as pivotal.

A mere shift in the wind direction, from southwest to southeast for instance, can entirely change the trajectory of the fire. And we of course all know that wind shifts are a common occurrence in South Jersey, none more common than the sea-breeze. Sea-breezes do lead to shifting winds, but also bring in more humid ocean air, which can help reduce the fuel for a fire that is more responsive to dry air with low relative humidity. Another factor both firefighters and forecasters have to consider is that the more intense fires can actually make their own weather, further complicating things.

Forecasting higher fire danger is something we have much success with, compared to the complexities of nowcasting a fire once it has developed. The National Weather Service will issue Fire Weather Watches when conditions have the potential to be favorable for rapid fire spread if a brush fire were to form. Red Flag Warnings are issued when those conditions are likely to occur, namely strong winds, dry fuels, and low relative humidity levels. And considering most forest fires are started by humans, we should all use extra caution on those handful of days each spring and sometimes again the fall when our fire danger is elevated. A single cigarette butt or spark from an automobile is all it takes to trigger a wildfire that could go on to burn thousands of acres.

With that extra caution in mind while outdoors this spring, especially on those high fire danger days, be sure to enjoy this normally quieter time of the year weather-wise. Fire season will continue through "green up", when trees and other vegetation turn green and add moisture to the ecosystem, reducing the otherwise dry fuels that are present before green up.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Spring Has Sprung! Time to Dig in the Garden

irds are singing their sweet songs, the grass is getting greener, and the sun is shining on our vitamin D-craving faces. Yes, the long-awaited spring has finally arrived. Daffodils, the harbingers of spring, have been announcing its coming for weeks, and now their bugle blooms shout it out. Tulips are also pushing their way through the earth, fashionably late, knowing their vibrant colors will turn heads when they make their grand entrance to the party. Gardeners are excited because, at last, they can dig in the dirt and begin planting seeds and plants directly in the ground, beautifying their gardens and nourishing their souls. Though the estimated last frost dates are still a few weeks away, plenty of cool-season edibles and flowers thrive in the conditions of spring and can handle a light frost.

Your local nursery should serve as a guide for which plants can handle cold temperatures. My first flower purchase of the season is always ranunculus. Despite the strange name, I’m always smitten with this cold-loving beauty that resembles a double rose. Pansies, primroses, and hyacinths will also add a colorful start to your spring garden. Just be sure to buy plants that have been outside in the evenings.

Those tough guys and gals will be “hardened off” to the cold as opposed to coddled plants you might find in the flower section of the grocery store. Most likely, plants sold indoors have been grown in the pampered protection of a greenhouse and aren’t ready to face the cold nights that spring can bring.

and herbs. Peas, carrots, kale, spinach, beets, radishes, Swiss chard, lettuces, chives, dill, and parsley will all thrive in the longer days and cool nights of early spring. Resist the urge to plant warm-season plants such as tender annuals, basil, tomatoes, zucchini, and corn. Anyone that has lived in South Jersey long enough knows that early spring can be deceiving with bathing suit temperatures one weekend, and freezing weather the next. Though our last frost date is predicted to be April 23-30 (depending on how close you are to the coast), Mother’s Day is considered the “safe date” to

Shedding Light on Local History With Matchbook Covers A Look Back at Ocean City

A

souvenir is a must after a vacation in Ocean City. A matchbook cover was once the cheapest and smallest memory of a wonderful time spent in America’s Greatest Family Resort.

The small, but useful advertising gimmick spread like wildfire into the pockets, purses, and kitchen drawers of millions of Americans from the 1920s to the 1960s. Matchbooks saw a decline in popularity starting in the mid-1960s with the availability of disposable lighters and anti-smoking health campaigns.

In 1962, the federal government decreed that friction strips had to be moved from the outside-front of a matchbook to the outside-back, thus ending the need for the famous phrase, “CLOSE COVER BEFORE STRIKING.” With the strip in the front, failing to do so could allow a spark to light the other matches.

The matchbook covers were a favorite advertising give-away for restaurants. “BECK’S FOR SEAFOOD”

is credited with giving away the first restaurant matchbook cover in Ocean City. In 1936, the restaurant, located at the base of the 9th Street Bridge, advertised their platters and the cost, “ALL FOR 85 CENTS.” While most covers just used the front for getting their message out, some used the inside of the cover and even the matches themselves. In 1939, “HOGATE’S FOR SEAFOOD” (formally called Beck’s) had the most collectible of all the local matchbooks. The inside had a flap that showed a dinner platter and, when the flap was lifted, a description of

what the platter included for 85 cents.

Even the matches included artwork.

The Flanders Hotel receives the credit for the first local hotel to advertise on a matchbook cover. People attending the grand opening of the swimming pools in 1929 received, “THE FLANDERS; 250 ROOMS & BATHS” matchbooks.

Even the Ocean City Public Relations Department advertised on a matchbook cover in 1950: “AMERICA’S GREATEST FAMILY RESORT.” Check your junk drawer and you’ll probably find a souvenir matchbook.

Seahorses are full of surprises

Fascinating creatures are common in back bays. Habitat needs our protection

s Sue Forrest hauled a crab trap onto the dock of the Bayside Center in Ocean City, she noticed something surprising. Some of the seaweed that came along with the trap was flopping. Looking closer, she found two tiny seahorses.

“Their little tails were wrapped around part of the crab trap,” she said. “I had two of them. I figured they were a mated pair.”

That’s right; seahorses are monogamous.

Forrest is a retired art teacher who works summers at The Bayside Center, an environmental and educational center at 520 Bay Ave. operated by Ocean City. The site was long known as the Wheaton Estate, with a house dating from 1916.

Forrest took her tiny captives and

put them in one of the display tanks at the center, choosing carefully to be certain they would not be eaten by one of the other occupants.

They fed them shrimp pellets and kept them for a little while before releasing the pair in the bay. They were in the aquarium long enough for Forrest to see their undersea mating dance.

“They twirled and danced and whirled,” she said, while one – she believed it was the male, changed color.

That’s right; seahorses change color, another of multiple unusual aspects of the tiny fish that hardly look like fish at all. For instance, the males carry their young in a pouch, taking them in as eggs and releasing them as fully formed minuscule seahorses. They are one of the few animals that can move each eye independently of the other. Chameleons are another.

Linda Taylor recently found one on a beach walk in Avalon, where she has a second home. An avid snorkeler, she said she has often seen them in the clear waters of the Caribbean but had not seen any in New Jersey before.

She was happy the little guy was still alive, and after taking a photo on the beach returned it to the water.

She posted her image to the Facebook page All Things Avalon, where hundreds of people reacted. Many said they’d never seen one, while one commenter said she would see them by the dock when her parents lived on the bay in the 1970s.

“Oh, what a treasure,” she wrote.

Many others said they love seahorses.

“It was definitely alive,” Taylor said. She hopes it survived getting beached.

Dr. Elizabeth Lacey was not surprised someone found a seahorse in southern New Jersey, but was surprised to hear that one washed up on the beach alive. They do not do very well with waves, she said,

preferring the quiet waters of the bay. Although they are a kind of fish, they are not able to swim against a strong current, depending instead on their prehensile tails to cling to grass, coral or other stationary objects.

“They’re actually really awkward swimmers. They have such a tiny dorsal fin,” she said.

Known to her students as Dr. Z, Lacey is an associate professor of marine science at Stockton University. She’s a specialist in marine botany and has often found seahorses in the beds of eel grass in bays throughout the area.

“I’ve always loved seahorses since I was a little kid,” Lacey said. She and her students find them when exploring seagrass beds or running a sein net through the bay water. “If you hold one in your hand, they will wrap their tail around your finger, which is kind of like the most adorable thing ever.”

She said the species has a special appeal for many people, including many children.

“They’re personable looking.

They’re charismatic in some way.

There’s a unique appeal across all ages,” she said. “You’re talking to a marine biologist, so everything in the ocean is appealing to me.”

In New Jersey, the most common species are the lined seahorse and the northern seahorse, she said. With the tail, they are usually about four or five inches long. They are closely related to the pipe fish, which Lacey said looks just like you would expect

– a long, thin fish with a head that looks just like that of a seahorse.

“It’s the straight version instead of a curled-up version,” she said.

The scientific name for the seahorse genus is hippocampus, from the ancient Greek for “Horse” and “Sea Monster.” If that name sounds familiar it may be because it is shared by a section of the human brain that plays a role in memory, named by a 16th century anatomist who thought it resembled a seahorse.

The fish – not the section of the brain – have bony plates and protective spikes. They are one of only two kinds of fish that swim vertically. Their very simple digestive system means they need to feed constantly, sucking almost microscopic crustaceans into their tiny mouths.

Images from Sue Forrest and Linda Taylor Little is known about the size of seahorse populations worldwide. As with many species, human beings seem to be the greatest threat to seahorses, which are collected to be dried and sold both as souvenirs and for use in folk medicine.

A 2018 report posed at oceana. org states that worldwide seahorses are in trouble both from the global trade and from the loss of habitat.

Fisheries.org reported the small number of accidental catches of various

kinds of seahorses around the world in commercial fishing operations adds up to about 37 million individuals a year.

“The bigger threat is that we’re losing the habitat they need,” Lacey said.

Locally, the best way to help seahorses is to protect the sea grass habitat on which they depend, she said.

Over the past decade, she has monitored sea grass areas in New Jersey. Some areas are seeing a decline, with an increase in other areas.

Born by the hundreds and released from their father’s pouch, baby seahorses rely on beds of seagrass for protection. So do the adults, and multiple other species that people either find adorable or tasty, like scallops and flounder.

“We need really healthy seagrass beds to form that refuge,” Lacey said. “If you protect the habitat, you give protection to a lot of different critters.”

Feeling the Lasagna Love

ometimes when we are overwhelmed the best thing we can do is give. And by giving I mean making lasagnas out of your home, for families in need throughout our community, as a volunteer for Lasagna Love.

Lasagna Love was started during the pandemic in San Diego by Rhiannon Menn, during a time of immense uncertainty and need, as a way to help people in her community. Today, this viral movement now spans the entirety of the United States (reaching all 50 states) and is powered by more than 20,000+ volunteers. In November 2020, Lasagna Love achieved its nonprofit, 501(c)(3) status.

As a volunteer for Lasagna Love, I am matched each week with people in need in my community who have requested a lasagna. My lasagna recipients have included an older couple in their 60s, who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and are having trouble finding employment; a family of three who are caring for

a disabled family member and; an 80 year-old widow who is finding it difficult to prepare meals for one.

The mission of Lasagna Love is quite simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Lasagna Love not only helps address the rise in food insecurity among families, but also provides a simple act of giving - via a homemade meal - during a time of worry and stress.

Cook Time: 90 minutes Yield: 6 servings Ingredients: ● 2 TBS extra virgin olive oil ● 1 onion, chopped ● 2-3 garlic cloves, finely chopped ● salt and pepper to taste ● 4 cups fresh spinach, chopped ● 2 cups of shredded zucchini ● 25 ounces of marinara sauce ● 16 ounces ricotta cheese ● 1 egg ● 2 TBS fresh parsley, chopped ● 1 TSP garlic powder ● 1 cup parmesan cheese (1/4 cup for ricotta mixture, 3/4 cup for lasagna) ● 8 ounces mozzarella cheese ● 1 box no-boil lasagna noodles ● fresh parsley for garnish Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the onions until softened (4-5 minutes). Add garlic, fresh chopped spinach and shredded zucchini.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook until spinach is wilted and zucchini is sautéed. Add marinara sauce (reserve a small amount to coat baking dish). Mix and set aside.

In a large bowl, stir to combine the ricotta, egg, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, garlic powder, parsley and salt and pepper.

To assemble the lasagna, spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Spread reserved marinara sauce into the bottom of a baking dish. Top with 3 no-boil lasagna noodle sheets. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then top with 1/3 of the spinach-zucchini marinara mixture, evenly distributing over the ricotta.

Lightly sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layering steps, ending with a final layer of noodles on the top. Top the final noodle layer with marinara mixture and mozzarella cheese.

Add 1/2 cup of water to the bottom of the baking dish to help hydrate the no-boil lasagna noodles. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.

Remove foil, raise oven temperature to 450 degrees, top with additional mozzarella cheese and continue baking until liquid is evaporated and cheese is bubbling (approx. 10-15 minutes). Cool for 1020 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley to serve.

The weather is getting warmer but the real estate market is hot

s we officially enter spring 2021, the real estate market is perfect for sellers wishing to obtain the highest price for their home. We have not seen the home values increase so rapidly since the height of the 2005-2006 real estate boom! This is the perfect opportunity for sellers that felt the downturn of the value of their home dip, after the meltdown of 2008 thru early 2020. Now in many cases they have been able to gain back equity in their home, due to the slim supply and strong demand for housing, since the onset of Covid-19 in the spring of 2020. This has afforded an exceptional opportunity for many homeowners.

We have also been able to suc-

cessfully prevent many homeowners from foreclosure and assist them to either keep or sell their homes for a much higher sales price. This is due to the stalling of the Sheriff Sales and banks that were not able to proceed with foreclosures during the pandemic. This has increased the overall value of real estate property, both nationally and locally.

Multiple offers are often occurring on the homes that are placed on the market and in many cases the offers are close to or at asking price. Sometimes as much as $5,000-$45,000 over asking price, if the home is in a sought after location or is in superior condition. In some cases, a home may have a frenzy of numerous showings, with as many as a few dozen in a matter of days. The seller receives numerous bids and accepts the highest and best.

The sweet spot for Atlantic County right now is Egg Harbor Township, the heart of Atlantic County. There are numerous new construction homes currently being built with

more to come within the next 12-18 months, planned through 2022 and beyond. D.R Horton has taken the lead with Crystal Lakes built out and completed, Autumn Lane, and Huntings Run are selling out quickly as well. Harbor Pines is taking deposits and has now resumed construction at full speed ahead.

Ryan Homes' Artists Walk in Mays Landing is sold out and in Hamilton Township, future new homes are planned to be built by D.R. Horton with groundbreaking within the year.

To Weigh or Not to Weigh?

our weight is just one piece of your overall health picture. So do you really need to weigh yourself? My clients are encouraged to stay off the scale until their weekly weigh-in session in my office. Many people believe in weighing yourself regularly as it can help you stay on track with your weight loss or weight maintenance goals. Like having a weekly budget.

If you go over your budget one week, you want to know so you can fix it.

If you don’t realize you’re overspending every week, it adds up.

The scale can actually throw you off your plan to lose weight.

I’ve had clients tell me they are weighing themselves 3x a day. Nooo! The minute the scale shows a gain people tend to get discouraged and run to eat. Usually it isn’t something healthy.

Then there is the opposite, the scale shows a loss and the “food rewards” happen. It seems to always go back to the food.

It’s not how often you weigh yourself, the key is consistency. If you want to step on the scale weekly, for example, do it on the same day each week.

Your weight won’t be consistent if you weigh yourself on Friday and Monday.

Many people have a different routine on the weekends. They might eat out more, drink alcohol or snack more.

Compare that to Friday, if you’ve been eating consistently for five days, and you’ll see a big difference.

You’ll also get a more reliable result if you weigh yourself first thing in the morning, as food and drink can change what the scale says for a few hours.

I personally have my clients weigh in midweek. Weighing yourself on Wednesdays and Thursdays is best because it’s the middle but you’re not tied to that day. Many people like to see what they weigh on Friday because they’ve had consistent

routines throughout the week. You see where your weight is after you’ve held a routine for five days. Then you can adjust your routine if you’re not seeing results.

Weighing yourself daily you will see constant weight fluctuations. Certain things may cause a rapid change on the scale, sending you into a panic.

But take a breath — overnight weight gain is not a thing. Some people ask me why they seemingly gained five pounds overnight. We know that 3,500 calories equals one pound of weight gain. If you’ve gained five pounds overnight, it’s unlikely that you ate 17,500 calories. It’s probably due to other factors.

Water retention is a major cause of

an overnight change on the scale. You might be retaining more water if you: ● Ate high-sodium foods. ● Drank alcohol. ● Traveled, including flying or long drives. ● Have premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or started your menstrual cycle. ● Constipation If you’re retaining water without an obvious reason, see your doctor.

Even the most dedicated person can hit a weight-loss plateau, which is oh-so frustrating. But the number on the scale is a piece of your overall health, not the whole picture. During any health journey, there’s more than one way to measure success. The scale is just one factor. You can also take body measurements once a week, such as your waist or thighs.

Those measurements may show that you’re losing inches instead of pounds, suggesting you’re losing fat mass and gaining muscle, since muscle weighs more than fat.

Look in your closet for another way to check in on your health goals.

Maybe your favorite pair of jeans fits better, even though you haven’t lost much weight. This could be a sign that your body composition is changing, even though the scale isn’t reflecting that.

Maybe you’ve got a number in mind, but your scale taunts you with another one. Don’t give up. It’s time to take some power away from the scale.You’re more than that number.

Your scale isn’t going to reflect all the positive changes you make. Think

about how your food choices are making you healthier. Focus on the amazing mental and physical benefits of regular exercise. Maybe you have more energy to play with your kids. So many victories are not scale-related.

Your weight does not define you.

EHT BMX Kicks off their 2021 season

gg Harbor Township BMX began their season with the Jack Frost Classic BMX Race 2021, held at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, March 20th.

The season opener drew riders from all across the state and of all age, including groups, for boys, girls, men and women from under 5 to over 50.

Egg Harbor Township became the

first track to reopen in New Jersey.

Steve Adams, EHT BMX president, had to make a number of changes due to Covid-19. In preparation for race day, team tents were relocated to minimize crowds and registration was done online to avoid long lines of people gathering closely. Masks were also encouraged for spectators as many people tend to gather next to the fence surrounding the track.

“It’s a wonderful day,” Adams said.

Spring Mix Manhattans

o I am not suggesting putting salad in your cocktail.

Hear me out.

Spring Mix is a type of salad that includes a multitude of lettuces and greens. It’s quite a stretch from the Iceberg I grew up with. This variety of greens not only gives you an interesting range of colors but also flavors and textures. It makes the salad more interesting!

So how can we apply this idea to Manhattans? If we change it too much, would it even be considered a Manhattan anymore?

Before we settle on an answer to these questions let’s go back to the beginning. The classic Manhattan is a cocktail. That is, it’s a drink composed of three components: a base, a modifier, and a flavoring or coloring component. For a Manhattan that you would order today, that would be Bourbon (Base), Sweet Vermouth (Modifier), Aromatic Bitters (Flavoring).

Such a strong core couldn’t possibly be subject to change can it? Oh,

why yes it can! In fact it already has. In the late 1800’s a Manhattan would actually have been served with American Rye instead of Bourbon. Then there is the Perfect Manhattan, which sees the Vermouth portion split between Sweet and Dry Vermouth.

So evolution in Manhattans is nothing new!

Today we have all manner of variations from different bitters like cherry, chocolate, or orange, to vermouth being replaced with amaro. There are even barrel aged Manhattans!

So can we change the Manhattan some more? Clearly, the answer is yes!

If we change it too much will it still be considered a Manhattan? Let’s find out!!

If you, like me, are ready to explore some new directions with your cocktails here are a few options: ● Cognac - Share some “base” ratio with Cognac. If you like a 3:1 (Base:Modifier) ratio, try 2 parts Bourbon, 1 part cognac, and 1 part Vermouth. The Cognac will add a surprising level of body/texture as well as a new layer of sweetness

er. So naturally adding some orange bitters is great! But if we split the Modifier between Vermouth and Don Ciccio & Figli Mandarinetto (made with Mandarian oranges) the result is running our cocktail dangerously close to an Old Fashioned! So what? Drink what you like!

At the end of the day, if you find yourself mixing the same drink every night, branch out. Experiment. Don’t be afraid to “Spring Mix” it up!

arter Doorley, a ten-yearold from Brigantine, has surfed more than 300 consecutive days -- in nor'easters, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures! Paired with his passion for waves, Carter is passionate about helping others. He has raised money for an animal rescue, collected 1,266 cans of food for those in need, collected and sent Valentines to our troops overseas. Also, each and every day, he picks trash up off our beaches. Carter exemplifies the old adage that little (or young) people can make a big difference!

It all began when nine-year-old Carter found himself home from school on quarantine a year ago last March. He decided to spend his time doing what he loved, surfing. Since the beaches were never closed in

A family friend, John Szatkowski goes out in the water with Carter frequently and has coached him previously, during the summer.The ac-

tive hurricane season this year has fueled some rough surf conditions with big waves. Many wondered if the rolling giants would stop Carter.

Not at all, said mom. “Carter’s fearless,” she added. “Even during the hurricane swells, he’s not afraid.”

Carter’s parents do watch the surf conditions carefully though and often give Carter a time window to surf when conditions are optimal.

Carter’s mom, Dawn, shared that Carter has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder.

She said that surfing is the first thing that Carter has really stuck with and she is thrilled that he has found his niche and is thriving.

So what’s next for Carter? Well, one thing we know for sure is he will be riding plenty of waves. His next goal is 365 consecutive days, then 400. If there is a world record holder, he or she better watch out because there is no stopping this 4th grader.

Carter is now raising funds for SurfAid's 2021 Clean Water Challenge.

Tick exposure and kidney disease in dogs Paw Prints

I

think it's safe to say that we all hate ticks. And we all know that using tick killing products on our pets is important. But what many people don't know is the danger of diseases transmitted by those same ticks.

Most people know about Lyme disease. But many people do not know about other diseases these ticks can transmit such as Anaplasma and Erlichiosis. And like Lyme, many times these diseases either don't show symptoms, or symptoms seem to “come and go”, so owners do not realize the pet is sick.

This is why annual screening for these diseases in important. The so called “deer tick” is not the only tick that can transmit these diseases. I would estimate that my office will find an average of one or two positive dogs

every week. So tick control, and Lyme vaccine are very important things to do for your dog. Strangely enough, it seems cats do not get any of these diseases.

Lyme disease typically causes lameness and joint pain. However, this lameness can come and go, and can shift from leg to leg over time, so often times the disease is “hidden” for a long time but is inside causing damage. Strangely, often the dog is visibly limping yet the doctor can not elicit the pain on examination! So once again, testing is so important.

However an emerging problem is the relationship between Lyme disease and chronic kidney disease in dogs.

A retrospective study done by Idexx Veterinary Laboratories, examined over 800,000 blood samples. What they found was that dogs with Lyme disease had a 43% higher risk of kidney disease. And for Erlichia, another tick borne infectious agent, there was a 300% higher risk of kidney disease.

You can see now the importance of blood testing each year. Veterinarians can run a simple test right in the office, which screens for Lyme, Erlichia and Anaplasma as well as Heartworm. This test requires only a very small amount of blood and will give an answer within

10-12 minutes. If a pet is positive, we then start the antibiotic Doxycycline for 30 days. Also now available, is a very sensitive test called SDMA, that will screen for early kidney disease. If present, then other steps are taken to start treating the kidney. As we all know, finding disease early on is important.

Another important point. There is no such thing as a tick “preventative” despite what labels say. Nothing will keep ticks off your pet. The object of these tick treatments is that hopefully the tick is killed within a few hours of the time that it bites into the dog. This is important as it is thought that tick diseases are not transmitted unless the tick (or it's head) remains attached to the dog for 6-24 hours.

Since the disease is transmitted by the ticks saliva, this is the reason why the head must be removed. (note, this is a simplified version of disease transmission for the purpose of this article) For tick control, there are several products from topical to oral to collars. You should talk with your veterinarian about each and make an

informed decision about what would be best for your pet and for your family. BEWARE of counterfeit products!

There are many of them out there since unlike heartworm medication, these products are not prescription based and thus are widely available. Also if you have cats that go outdoors, they can carry the ticks inside to you and to your dog, so even though they don't get the disease, that tick can drop off the cat and find your dog, or you, and give you the disease.

The tick disease screening test is easy and quick. If the tests are all negative, then there is great peace of mind for you and good health for your best friend. Make sure your pet is tested yearly.

Passover 2021, a different kind of Sedar

T

his Passover, like everything else, is like no other I’ve ever celebrated. In the Beforintine (before + quarantine = Beforintine), my family would host what became our famously interesting sedar with 20 or sometimes 25 people. It morphed from a rigid, by the book (the book is the traditional Maxwell House

Haggadah stained with decades of holidays past) service into a delightful gathering with our own Haggadah that we as a family wrote and updated each year. The points were still made; we just gave it some extra flair.

Passover is one of the most celebrated holidays in the Jewish religion. Its popularity is mainly because the holiday commemorates the biblical Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt (kind of a big deal to our people).

We celebrate this with a Sedar,

which I can only describe as an interactive service intertwined with a large meal.

For those unfamiliar with this holiday, I will quickly dive a little deeper into what it symbolizes.

Passover honors the Biblical story of the Hebrew slaves exodus from Egypt. During the week-long holiday, Jews who observe do not eat any leavened foods. This includes breads, rice, oats, wheat, and barley. We refrain from eating these foods to remind us that the Jewish people had to

leave in such haste they didn’t even have time for the dough they were to take with them to rise, leaving them with what we now know as matzoh, a flat unleavened bread.

This year our once loud and bustling dinner/service that usually involves three weeks of making lists, planning, and cooking, is now reduced to six people. I’ve concluded that most of our favorite traditions won’t be as prominent, specifically cooking.

Cooking was always the highlight of Passover. That’s when so many of our traditions, lifelong jokes, and memories were born, and sure, while the cooking was going on, I’d have to go to the store five or more times because we needed more eggs, butter, lemons, or something. One year, I was sent out to find more soup bowls because we didn’t realize how many people we had invited (My mom still uses them to this day.) On more than one occasion, I would walk into the house filled with the aroma of my family’s traditions with a dozen lemons.

Even before I put my bags down, I had to get something else that we didn’t have enough of. That’s when the laughter would always ensue.

Cooking is the most cherished tradition I find myself reminiscing about and missing as Passover approaches at sundown March 27th.

There are still things to look forward to, though. It’s not all sad maybe not at all sad, just different.

This year, it will be my immediate family (and spouses) sitting around while my mom makes me embarrass

Matzoh Candy

Ingredients: 1/2 lb. matzoh ● 1/2 cup butter ● 1 cup brown sugar ● 8 ounces chocolate chips Directions 1. Line a cookie sheet with foil and lay matzah on a pan.

2. Melt brown sugar with butter in saucepan; boil until mixture coats a spoon.

3. Brush matzah with brown sugar mixture.

4. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 3-4 minutes (watch closely-it burns easily!!!) until it starts to bubble.

5. Cover with chocolate chips and put back in the oven until the chips begin to melt.

6. Spread the chocolate to cover the matzah. Optional: Sprinkle with nuts, sprinkles, candy, etc.

7. Refrigerate chocolate-covered matzah until stiff, then break into pieces.

Spring weather allows for outside workouts Shore Fit

M

arch 20th marks the first day of spring when flower buds bloom and people start getting outside and being active. You see people walking, running, biking, and skateboarding. It feels good after being stuck inside.

Backyard classes and beach workouts became very popular during the pandemic and continue to thrive. It’s definitely a new way of exercising for some. With gyms being open, but masks required, some prefer the outside route. I believe it will continue in its popularity for the long haul. Some may even ditch the gym forever. It’s those natural movements that we do outside like sprinting, jumping, throwing, pulling, and pushing, that make us feel connected to nature while getting naturally fit. These are compound movements because they

work a bunch of muscles at once. They help us build more well-balanced bodies. Most gym machines and exercises don’t do that.

Outdoor workouts also improve our coordination and require a wider range of motion, which keeps us flexible and mobile. Compound exercises engage and give us stronger cores than ever because these exercises work our abs at the same time as they work our other muscles.

Have you ever tried using playground equipment as part of your workout? Ladders and monkey bars are great tools to use as equipment for a challenging workout. Hanging on bars, climbing or doing knee-ups, push-ups, bear crawls and crab crawls will help you achieve your fitness goals.

These natural movements will make us more resistant to injury by increasing our mobility and balance.

That's fantastic because balance becomes a big issue as we age.

Another important factor to take in account is the mental side to this.

Being outside just makes you feel good. A lot of us spend most of our days cooped-up, staring at computers, so the opportunity to get out and get some fresh air is very appealing.

We also get Vitamin D naturally from

working out in the sunshine. That’s a win win in my book!

We also use our minds when creating our workouts. The Brain is another muscle put to good use. The basic outdoor workout exercises like pull-ups, push-ups, and sprints get boring fast.

A bored body doesn’t get fit. You have to get those creative juices flowing. I love planning and preparing my outdoor workouts for my friends and family.

Exercising outside is good for our soul and it has been found to reduce stress, mental fatigue, improve our moods, and even make us work harder without feeling like we’re exerting ourselves much.

One disadvantage to working-out outside is the weather. I run into this problem as well with my backyard workouts. If it rains, we have to head inside. I am always checking the forecast. Most would agree that exposure to unpleasant cold, heat, wind, and/or rain is a big disadvantage of exercising outside versus at the gym. Sure, it can be unpleasant to exercise outside when the weather doesn’t cooperate

but overcoming that discomfort brings big rewards you can’t get from the gym. We exercise in the heat but make the best of it with umbrellas and fan water misters in the summer. We make it work. Going to a gym can also feel intimidating for some.

You feel like everyone’s watching you, judging you for your poor form, or mocking the light weights you’re lifting.

When you’re outside, there’s nobody else around to judge you. You also may be lucky enough to find an amazing group of people who will workout outside with you. As the warmer weather approaches, look for that biking or walking buddy or find that outside group class or simply do your own thing. I promise you, it will make you feel like a kid playing outside all over again.

Shifting Into Spring Jeff's Journal

T

he long anticipated change of seasons has come. I know some of you reading this may be big fans of Winter and sad to see her leave, but there is something about the newness of Spring. And while there is still quite a chill in the air at night, the days are warming and daylight sticks around longer with each passing week.

So what does the change of season mean to you, if anything? For me, it means a time to reflect on the last several months and look forward to the remainder of the year with renewed energy and course correction in some areas of my life.

Speaking of course correction, do you know what happens when a missile is fired in battle? It’s set on its intended target often hundreds of miles away.

But that’s not the end of the work to get the missile to the finish line. Along the path to its target, the missile course corrections continuously. It has to adjust for atmospheric conditions including wind, obstacles that might come in its

path and any other number of factors.

So it is with us. In our journey through life we also have to be willing and flexible to course correct our own path. Springtime is a good opportunity to evaluate what areas of life we need to course correct to reach our ultimate goal. Whether personal or professional, the path is never Point A to Point B. And here is the reality, we shouldn’t let ourselves become discouraged when plans change and detours occur. Rather than obstacles to reaching our destination, we should look at unexpected changes along the way as opportunities.

Knowing that the unexpected will occur should make things easier to handle when they happen.

If this that last year has taught us anything (and it has taught us many things), it’s the need to be prepared for shifts in our lives. In his book Leadershift, my mentor John Maxwell addresses “shifts” head on. He outlines 11 steps a leader must take in order to be who he or she needs to be. You might say, “but I’m not a leader.” We are all leaders in one area or more. You may lead your team at work or your family at home, but we all find ourselves at one point or another in a leadership position. Besides these principles apply beyond leadership. In his book, Maxwell addresses key

“shifts” that need to take place mentally, on paper, in strategy and planning. The reality is just like the missile analogy, as best we can, we must all try to stay one step ahead of what’s in front of us. We need to be forward thinking in every area. Whether it’s in the corporate boardroom, or in our homes, being ready

to make necessary shifts is essential to winning.

So as Spring unfolds around us and trees come back to life, take time to breathe new life into your dreams, goals and aspirations and make the necessary shifts to reach your intended goals and destination in 2021.

Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City Pivotal in Bridging Digital Divide

he New Jersey Department of Education recently reported all that students in the state now have the technology to connect with their classroom online. However, many believe this comes too late, with thousands of kids disconnected for months after schools closed their doors. In March of 2020, students were required to stay at home to

further contain the spread of the virus. With a disproportionate number of school-age children lacking home internet access, the extensiveness of the digital divide was exposed. Schools struggled to substitute in-school resources with online instruction, electronic libraries, streaming videos, and other online tutorials; all of which hinged on technology and internet access.

The Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City played a vital role in bridging the digital divide for youth in Atlantic City. The “digital divide” refers to the number of students who did not have access to devices or the internet connectivity needed for their online instruction.

lantic City's newest initiative, STEAM (an acronym for: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) offers both the technology and internet access. This

program quickly became a critical resource for children whose parents were on the frontline as essential workers.

City offered remote schooling for children between the ages of 6-18, provided three meals a day to many children, accepted childcare vouchers and offered scholarships where there was a need.

The Boys and Girls Club serves approximately 2,000 children and has three locations: Chelsea Avenue, Drexel Avenue and the Teen Center on Pennsylvania Avenue in Atlantic City. The Teen Center was renovated last year to provide hospitality, health and technology training.

While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is a more familiar acronym, the organization calls it STEAM. "At the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City, we add the Arts because a lot of the arts and design require both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, " shares STEAM Lab Director, Mia Williams.

With the hospitality industry dominating the area, Atlantic City faced a perfect storm when the pandemic hit.

"This gave us a beautiful opportunity to step up for our kids," shared Mia Williams, STEAM Lab Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City.

“COVID has helped us recognize the need for diversified work opportunities. As much as we love hospitality in Atlantic City, we now see what a pandemic can do to it.”

Following the 2008 financial cri-

sis, unemployment in Atlantic City and throughout Atlantic County was the highest in the nation. As the tourism industry slowly recovered, the area had just begun to rebound when the pandemic struck. A recent report showed that over one-third of residents in Atlantic County are jobless. Atlantic City is mainly sustained by tourism and the hospitality industry. Once the pandemic hit, casinos, bars and restaurants were forced to close, leaving

Many locals believe we need to diversify employment opportunities in Atlantic City and throughout Atlantic County in order for our next generation to succeed.

The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Lab at the Boys & Girls Club gives participating children the opportunity to learn coding, explore robotics, fly drones and practice graphic design.

STEAM provides local students with

hands-on learning experience for diversified career opportunities in the technology industry.

Programs such as these are becoming increasingly critical to training the next generation for 21st century job skills. And the need is especially critical in Atlantic City, where only 25% of club students reported having STEAM-focused classes in their school.

Apple has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club, providing technical assistance to staff, supplying software, donating the iPads and Mac computers used in the lab, along with programs and hardware such as Everyone Can Code, Everyone Can Create, and Develop in Swift curricula to the lab’s program. Spectra and the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT) have also contributed greatly to making STEAM Lab a reality in the Boys and Girls Club in Atlantic City.

After years of a declining gaming industry and its effects, the Boys & Girls Club has positioned itself to provide 21st Century academic enrichment to ensure Atlantic City’s youths' future is bright.

o, March is quickly flying by, and my first question to you is this, “Are your brackets BUSTED yet?”

I wrote last time about March Madness and the NCAA Tournament.

For my money, the first few days of the “Big Dance” each year are some of the most riveting sports television out there.

I’ll get this out of the way early as since I last wrote, my brackets are completely busted. I am encouraged to see a Linwood native still alive in the Women’s NCAA Tournament though! In fact, it was fun to watch the first few days of both the men’s and women’s events as several faces with local ties popped up on national television. In the pro game, the Sixers have managed to stay at the top of the Eastern Conference in the NBA, despite not having the services of their big man. The Eagles have signed a veteran QB who should be familiar to many folks around these

parts. Plus, their former QB finally speaks to the media, but doesn’t say much about Philadelphia and his time there. The Phillies are getting closer to Opening Day, but have some interesting roster decisions to make.

The Flyers have juggled their lineup around repeatedly without much success. Finally, on the local level, some area high school basketball players get to make one last run and play in a postseason tournament, sort of. Plus, I got to make my return to on-camera TV work!

Speaking of TV, I’m still watching one medical drama week after week and wonder if it will ever show signs of slowing down? Plus, two more “guest hosts” spend some time trying to fill Alek Trebek’s shoes. Did you see them? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Can I just tell you how much I absolutely LOVE the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament?

This is the lowest average seed (5.9) for a Sweet 16 since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985 (previous: 5.6 in 1986) There are 5 teams seeded 8 or lower in the Sweet 16, tied for the most ever with 1999 and 2011. 4 double-digit seeds is tied for the 2nd most ever with 2011, trailing only 1999 (5).

There’s been 16 instances of a lower-seeded team winning in this tournament, tied for the 2nd-most seed upsets prior to the Sweet 16 since seeding began in 1979 (only year with more was 1999 – 19) There’s been 20 outright wins by betting underdogs and 7 by 7-point underdogs, both the most prior to the Sweet 16 since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

The combined seeds total in the Midwest Region is 33, the 3rd-highest for a region in the Sweet 16 ever (2011 Southwest – 34 | 1986 East – 34) Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and Kansas are the 4 winningest teams in Division I history. This is the 1st Sweet 16 without all 4 teams since 1979.

The Pac-12 is 9-1 (.900), tied for the 2nd-best record by any conference entering the Sweet 16 with the 1985 ACC, 1989 Big Ten and 2015 ACC (min.10 games). Only the 2016 ACC (12-1, .923) was better. The Pac-12 has 4 Sweet 16 teams for the 1st time since 2001.

The Big Ten had 9 bids, and set a record with 4 top-2 seeds, but has 1 team left (Michigan). They are the 1st conference to have 3 top-2 seeds fail to make the Sweet 16.

There are 10 different conferences represented in the Sweet 16, the most since 2011.

All three have bowed out earlier than they wanted I’m sure.

But on the women’s side of things, one very prominent athlete is still alive as Mainland alum Kylee Watson and #6 Oregon won by 20 over #11 South Dakota in the first round on Monday night. Watson, a true freshman, even got into the ballgame at the end, scoring the final two points of the game for the Ducks. Way to go #22…!

One last thing while I’m talking about women’s basketball. Did you see the story about how the NCAA dropped the proverbial ball?

Repeatedly? Posts on social media showed the weight room setup for the men’s tournament and then for the women, there was ONE rack of 12 dumbbell weights. AWFUL. INEXCUSABLE. And then, the NCAA further compounded its mistake as they tried to downplay the situation! Boy I sure hope I see a day in my lifetime where the women’s tournament gets the attention and respect it deserves! Now, don’t get me stated on the differences between the two “swag bags” that each group received! (eye-roll)

In pro basketball, injuries are a part of the game sure, but with teams cramming 72-games over 145 days because of the pandemic, it almost seems like the team that is the HEALTHIEST has the best chance to win it all this season. For the Sixers, they’ve managed to win lately despite Joel Embiid suffering a bone bruise injury in his knee. Seth Curry is dealing with an ankle sprain. But don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for the Sixers. The Los Angeles Lakers are playing without LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

And the Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant hasn’t played since Feb. 13th. A challenging NBA season for sure.

Did you see who the Eagles signed to be their backup quarterback? Audubon native Joe Flacco gets to come “home” as the former Baltimore, Denver and Jets QB, who won the Super Bowl XLVII MVP award, will now play and train roughly seven miles from where he grew up.

The deal is one-year, $3.5 million guaranteed, with the chance to earn another $4 million in incentives, but to me this is a PERFECT signing because the 36-year-old gets to mentor Jalen Hurts while

It didn’t go the way we all desired and wanted it to go, but I can sleep well at night knowing that I poured my heart and soul into everything I had in that city on and off the field.”

Boo-hoo Carson! That’s what I say. But man, I’m going to be mad if he succeeds in Indy, no doubt.

Okay, on to the Phillies as their Opening Day game is set for Thursday April 1st at home with Atlanta. And that’s no FOOLIN! Now, they just have to figure out exactly who they’re going to bring North with them from Spring Training in Clearwater, Florida.

As of this column, a few of the starting pitchers are less than 100% healthy. Plus, Adam Haseley is back in the outfield and trying to win the centerfield job. Will the Phils bring Odubel Herrera back up to the big leagues? Does Mickey Moniak make the majors? These are just a few of the questions the team is trying to answer in the final week of spring training.

I love hockey, but you’ll notice I buried the Flyers to LAST on my recaps here. 15-12-4 as of the writing of this column and on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture goes. Since winning 4 out of 5 in late February and early March, they’ve only won 3 out of their last 11 games, never winning more than one game at a time. It’s easy to see where the problems lie. As they were minus-14 in goal differential as of the writing of this column. That means they give up more goals than they score. Simply put, you can’t win a lot of hockey games that way! The NHL trade deadline is coming soon (April 12th), but if you are Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher, are you willing to make a big move knowing the team has bigger problems than one player might be able to fix? Stay tuned.

Locally, my last sports item has to do with BFA Productions and the recent SJ HOOPS MADNESS tournament they put on. Area high school boys basketball teams were denied a chance to play in a league tournament or the state tournament, so Doug Stasuk and the folks at BFA decided to

hold their OWN event. Teams had slightly different names, as it was not N.J.S.I.A.A. sanctioned, but I sure had fun covering “East Camden” (Woodrow Wilson) vs.

“Marlton Chiefs” Cherokee and The City” (ACHS) vs. “The Academy” (St. Joe) last Friday night. I figured out it was my first time back on “TV” since 2018 and I was thrilled to do it. Hopefully I’ll get to do more sideline reporting for BFA with high school sports in the spring season.

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I can’t believe I’m still hooked in each and every week for “Greys Anatomy” on ABC. Now in season 17, the medical drama returned from a winter hiatus with the death of a major character. Now, I’m not a SPOILER kind of guy, so if you want to know more, you’ll have to watch or Google it. But, what I will say is I am continually amazed that a show that is 17 years old can still draw my attention. I suppose I am invested in the characters, after all!

PT sideline reporter Lastly, JEOPARDY is now on to Dr. Oz as a guest host. I liked Ken Jennings, really liked executive producer Mike Richards and was kind of “eh” on Katie Couric. Kudos to her though for becoming the first female host of the show ever. Dr. Mehmet Oz is up right now, and I’m really curious to see how Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers does in his stint April 5th through the 16th. Anderson Cooper, Savannah Guthrie and Mayim Bialik are also scheduled to guest host. Along with Bill Whitaker from 60 Minutes and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Who do YOU want to see fill the late Alek Trebek’s shoes?

I’ll close with my reminder to keep wearing those masks and staying socially distant please. Vaccines continue to be given out in New Jersey with more and more people getting vaccinated every day. I’m fortunate enough to announce that I am now “fully vaccinated” and I hope that you will do the same. Hopefully “normal” is coming soon…!

Trust - How I Decided The Covid 19 Vaccine was right for me The Light with Raymond Tyler

merica is almost 4 months into the Joe Biden era and the 100,000 shot goal has been surpassed in about half the time Biden announced. While in some states vaccines are still hard to get, appointments are available in Atlantic City and southern NJ via The Atlantic City Convention Hall Mega-site.

Also, I can report people of color are lining up for shots despite our history with the American Health system. Various organizations like The NAACP and health care servers like AtlantiCare are also helping to sign up seniors and people of color for appointments online and via the phone at 1-855-568-0545 (8am-8pm.) So whether you examine barriers like work schedules and access or the troubled history between people of color and the American Government...the message is getting through and People Of Color in South Jersey are getting the Covid 19 vaccination.

Since the vaccine was announced I have personally kept my “cards close to my vest” regarding whether I would take the vaccine or not. In February I was on a zoom call with Rev. Charles Boyer founding director of Salvation and Social Justice. Boyer explains both the history and barriers that have affected people of color getting vaccinated in NJ and in America. “There was experimentation on black bodies that goes all the way back to slavery, whether that was in the areas of gynecology, DNA research, or even the Tuskegee experiment, there are multiple instances and where black bodies were experimented on and given things and withheld things (for our personal, family, community health.) When you compile that, on top of the social determinants, poverty, the barriers of work situations, this is what creates not only the hesitancy, but the barriers. Which gets us to a point in New Jersey, where only three to 4% of black people are vaccinated (at that time), even though we're 15% of the population.” Reverend Boyer also discussed the fact that the previous administration seemed almost “hostile” toward people of color.

These are all the things that were going through my mind as I was attempting to get my mother vaccinated

and myself. I was able to get my mother vaccinated early in March via a local pharmacy. She believes in science more than history. I'm still worried.

I acknowledge that many of the people I love and trust, people like teachers, activists and other non people of color are now vaccinated. Also I started to see more and more people that I love getting sick. So I found myself on line looking to get vaccinated.

While I had no luck with places like Shop Rite and CVS, I was able to get same day service at The Atlantic City Convention Hall Mega Site via www. covidvaccine.nj.gov .

The experience was remarkably organized. The longest I waited in line was to park my car. There were lines to check in and then to get vaccinated.

The whole time everything kept moving with both the national guard and F.E.MA reps doing great in keeping everyone moving and in light spirits. I sat for 15 minutes after my first shot, with no side effects. A F.E.MA rep signed me up for shot number two (I will write about that as well.)

Pros: Getting a shot at the Atlantic City Convention Hall Mega Site was painless for me.

Cons: I have family members that still need a vaccine that would not be able to handle the amount of walking

involved at The Mega-Site. We are still trying to get those family members on the pharmacy list.

Over All: It was more community for me that helped me choose to get vaccinated than trust of science. Even now I stop short of endorsing a vaccine with the history we have in this country. I endorse the process. I ask that you think , process the accurate information available, consider the health of yourself and those you love, consult with your doctor and then make the decision that is best for you.

Lastly: It is wonderful that so many organizations are mobilizing dollars and resources to have people of color vaccinated against Covid 19. In order for the TRUST to be maintained and even logical, a few things need to happen.

A. America must admit that as recently as the early 2000’s the government itself has experimented on people of color.

Likewise:Holding people accountable for these experiments going back to slavery would be great in building trust. At the moment there are no consequences for American Scientists when they choose to experiment on people without their knowledge and that needs to change.

B. There must be a plan and action

addressing gaps of health, education, wealth in communities of color (African Americans, Latinos, Indigenous People, ect.)

C. Racism within institutions such as the police force must not only be addressed but dealt with seriously and definitively. We are currently expected to fight covid, poverty, social injustice all on our own and love everybody.

These things should have been addressed as part of a moral society before Covid 19.

Ultimately how The Biden/Harris administration handles these problems in the next 4 years will determine how people of color deal with Covid 19 and whether we can ever TRUST our government and it’s science.

However for now, the vaccine against Covid 19 is the best option we have.

The rise and fall of the Atlantic City Racecourse

ong before the introduction of casinos in Atlantic City, thoroughbred racing was on the rise. The Atlantic City Race Course was the pinnacle of premiere horse racing in the country.

Atlantic City Race Course was led by the vision of four businessmen, John B. Kelly Sr., Leo Fraser, Fred Scholler and Glendon Robertson. On July 22, 1946, Atlantic City Race Course officially opened to a crowd of over 28,000. Among the attendees included Grace Kelly, daughter of John Kelly, and shareholders Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Sammy Kaye and Harry James.

September 1953 saw the debut of the yearly thoroughbred race, the United Nations Handicap. It was Atlantic City’s first showcase for the best turf runners throughout the country and the world. The annual event saw the success of eleven-time Triple Crown jockey Bill Shoemaker, who led three straight wins from 1957 to 1959. Breeder’s Cup winning horse Steinlen rode to victory in the 1990 Caesars International Handicap.

While Atlantic City Race Course was known for its world-class horse racing, the venue has also played

host to a variety of entertainment. From August 1-3, 1969, ACRC hosted the Atlantic City Pop Festival. The three-day rock festival was headlined by Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin and B.B. King, amongst a lineup of dozens. Over 110,000 revelers and approximately 6,000 gate crashers attended the concert, held nearly two weeks before Woodstock.

From its inception, Atlantic City Race Course was at the pinnacle in New Jersey.

The track drew record crowds of over 33,000 fans in September 7, 1953. In summer 1967, fans wagered over $3.1 million in a single day, the highest betting handle in ACRC history.

The rise of the casino and gaming industry caused attendance to slowly diminish. In 1983, ACRC became the first track in the United States to receive simulcast racing. New Jersey Supreme Court would suspend simulcast operations in 1985, but was later approved in a referendum. There was an effort to bring slot machines to the Atlantic City Race Course in 1998, but the proposal was shot down.

In its later years, Atlantic City Race Course would seldom open for live simulcasts and thoroughbred racing.

Several real estate developers and large businesses made attempts in purchasing the 250-acre property, all of which fell through. On May 4, 2012, Atlantic City Race Course held its final live day of racing, drawing a crowd of more than 25,000.

On January 9, 2015, it was formally announced that Atlantic City Race Course would wind down its operations and close its doors for good. While the future of ACRC and the 250-acre property remains unknown, its legacy and impact on our region has been etched into the history books.

100,000th vaccination at the Atlantic County COVID-19 Vaccination Megasite

tlantiCare hosted a celebration to mark the administration of its milestone 100,000th vaccination at the Atlantic County COVID-19 Vaccination Megasite. The Atlantic City Convention Center—location of the Megasite, a collaborative effort between AtlantiCare and the state—erupted with much fanfare and applause from the AtlantiCare healthcare and Megasite operations team, as the patient receiving the 100,000th dose was escorted by a member of the New Jersey National Guard to the vaccination station. At 90 years “young,” James Plummer proudly presented his arm for the first dose of his vaccination—to him a huge step in being able to soon return to interacting with congregants at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon for 60 years.

James’s daughter made it a family affair by also getting vaccinated. More than just recognizing the milestone administration of the 100,000 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Megasite, AtlantiCare saw the event as an opportunity to celebrate all the

Northern Gannets Make Spring Appearance

ird and nature enthusiasts flocked to the Jersey shore this past weekend for a rare and unforgettable sighting. The Northern Gannets made their fly by. These seabirds are only seen briefly along our coastal are during migration season, between late March and early April then again in September.

The Cape May Bird Observatory estimates that over 10,000 gannets could be spotted making their trek across the Delaware Bay. These large seabirds have bright white plumage, distinctive wingtips and a yellow head.

They are easy to spot with a good pair of binoculars. Once known as the Solan Goose, Northern Gannets have a wingspan of up to six feet in length and weigh anywhere from five to seven pounds. They can travel at velocities between thirty and forty miles per hour.

Northern Gannets have one of the most spectacular diving techniques. They plunge vertically into the water at speeds up to 60 miles an hour and can swim down

golden ea gles on land and, at sea, large sharks and seals. The average lifespan of a Northern Gannet is has been known to reach 35 years.

Gannets will nest and breed on sea cliffs and ledges of islands along the Canadian Maritimes, Iceland, the United Kingdom and parts of Sweden. The small rocky islands of Greenland and Spitsbergen, Norway allow suitable breeding conditions for the twenty six week s needed for brooding. Occasionally, they sleep in protected ledges on the mainland, however their webbed feet makes walking at long

40 to 50 feet. When feeding, they can spot prey from heights of up to 148 feet but typically search anywhere from 30 to 60 feet above sea level.

Roughly 90% of a Northern Gannets’ diet is made up of small fish, but can also feed off of squid, sardines, anchovies, haddock and

smelt. Just like seagulls, they will follow the back of fishing boats and, locally, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in hope of catching any fish in its wake.

While there is a growing population of over 1 million birds, the Northern Gannets remain a protected species in the United Kingdom. Their main predators are the bald white-tailed and

distances difficult.

More than 150,000 Northern Gannets make the trek to Bass Rock, a small island on the outer part of Scotland, to breed. North America has six breeding colonies; three are in the Gulf of St. Laurence, Quebec and three just off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is truly enthralling to see these majestic birds in flight.

merica passed the grim milestone of 500,000 souls gone from Covid-19. A sobering statistic no one would argue.

The virus has taken from us all: loved ones, careers, business, and mental health.

As I have written in the past the black community has also had to fight the virus of police brutality. Since January of 2020 when reports started to escalate about the Corona Virus, the Asian Community has, however, had to fight a renewed virus of bigotry and violence.

As is the case with all bigotry, it is the duty of all Americans, of all backgrounds, to fight back.

John C. Yang is The President and Executive Director of Asian American’s Advancing Justice and recently sighted a poll that reveals “Over 75% of Asian Americans felt like they were the target or have increased fear of discrimination.”

According to Yang approximately 40% of Asian Americans polled said they have heard other Americans “blame the Asians for Covid-19. Words Matter.” The attacks range from basic insults to full on violent attacks of varying degrees.

This surge in violence creates an atmosphere of fear.

Making a bad situation worse or at least not helping, has been the words of some elected officials, according to Ms.

Manjusha Kukarni, Executive Director of Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council. Ms. Kukarni explains that many of the incident reports her office receives includes language that has been used by elected officials like “Wuhan Virus, Kung Flu, China Plague.” She also explained that “Too often our communities are pitted against each other. Let’s think about how we work together for solutions. We can work together for the right restorative and transformative solutions.”

What Can Be Done?

People of all backgrounds must come together to say this bigotry/violence won’t be tolerated.

Statistics show that over the past 4 years violence and bigotry against not only Asians, but Blacks, Jews, Latins and LGBTQ communities has increased. We have a moral obligation to stand up for each other as well as a practical obligation.

Be an ally. If possible and safe, Intervene when you see someone experiencing racial violence.

If you can not intervene safely. Please call for help. You can also attempt to comfort the victim.

We have been fighting Covid-19 for what seems to be the longest year in U.S History. The virus of bigotry and violence and discrimination we have been fighting much longer and the fight will continue when the pandemic has past.

We can, however, do our part to stop the spread and minimize the effects of the virus of bigotry by standing together.
