I

remember so vividly when getting the very first issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine to print felt like climbing Mount Everest.

Desmond Tutu once said that “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” Everything in life that seems daunting, overwhelming, and even impossible can be accomplished gradually by taking on just a little at a time. One by one, the production of Shore Local became smoother and each issue better than the previous one.

It all started in March of 2016, when Bob and I took the biggest risk of our lives. We began our own publication, Shore Local Newsmagazine.

Springing Ahead towards longer days and warmer weather Weather

'm sure many of us are enjoying our spring-fling this week with a welcome surge of unseasonably warm temperatures. It's a sure sign that the start of spring is drawing near, officially just before sunrise next Saturday morning (March 20th).

But before we spring our calendars ahead next weekend, the clocks will spring ahead this weekend. We return to daylight saving time late Saturday night, or early Sunday morning depending on your point of view. And most agree that losing an hour of sleep is a small price to pay for the extra evening daylight that is ours to enjoy all spring and summer long. It's no secret that some of the nicest weather each year coincides

when the sun sets after 8pm, which occurs this year from May 10th through August 9th.

Every year since 2005, when the government added two weeks onto the start and end of the practice, we are on daylight saving time from the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday in November. From early November through early March, or essentially the bulk of the winter, we follow Eastern Standard Time.

Initially, daylight saving time was implemented over 100 years ago as an energy saving measure by shifting extra daylight into the evening hours, keeping people outside longer rather than inside using electricity. While enacted and repealed several times and only sporadically used after being first introduced in 1918, it's been a steady fixture in some form across most of the country since 1966.

island every summer. Longer and lighter evenings of course motivate us to get out of the house for recreation and exercise, and more fully enjoy the nice weather. And it's no secret the tourism industry benefits from the extra evening daylight as well. But what if there was no spring ahead or fall back at all? What if we stayed on daylight saving time throughout the year? It's an idea that's gaining steam throughout much of the United States, with more than 200 bills and resolutions introduced in state legislatures over the last five years.

But don't get excited just yet, even if the idea gains traction here in New Jersey. For any state to observe daylight saving time year-round, Congress needs to pass a federal law allowing states to do so. That's because of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which only allows states to opt out of daylight saving time, not remain on it all year long.

Proponents of year-round daylight saving time tout the difficulties of our bodies adjusting to the time change each spring and fall under the current system. They also highlight the mood disorders that are sometimes associated with the early darkness on standard time each winter. In South Jersey for instance, the sun will set before 5pm from November 7, 2021 through January 17, 2022. If we didn't "fall back," our clocks this November, the earliest our sun would set in the winter would be a little after 5:30pm during evenings in December.

It's important to note that when we spring ahead and fall back, we're not really "gaining" or "losing" an hour when we move our clocks. Essentially, we're just shifting the daylight, from the morning to the evening in the

spring and then in the other direction come the fall.

As a result, there would be a price we would pay if we didn't turn back our clocks and chose to remain on daylight saving time throughout the winter. While the sun would not set as early each December, sunrises would be noticeably later.

In that scenario for instance, our sun would rise between 8am and 8:20am for almost two months in the middle of winter, from early December through early February. The persistent later sunrises would be tough for some of us to get used to, as our work and school days would begin in extended darkness. Of course, we'll get that time back in the early evenings throughout the winter.

So what's your preference? Keep springing ahead and falling back? It's a task made easier since most of our clocks, at least those on televisions, cable boxes, iPhones, and even our cars, change automatically.

Or do we change tradition, and try something new?

It wouldn't be the first time, as it was temporarily enacted in the mid 1970s, but repealed shortly after due to unpopularity about those aforementioned late winter sunrise times.

But whichever your preference, no changes to our current practice is imminent. So we'll all lose that hour of sleep this weekend, but revel in our first 7pm sunsets since last fall come Sunday evening.

And hopefully we'll "spring ahead" to permanent warmer weather in the process. But knowing the roller coaster nature of spring temperatures in South Jersey, that may be a tall order.

He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

South Jersey’s First Cornhole Facility Opens its Doors

ornhole is a widely popular outdoor game played at all ages and skill levels. While the exact origins of the game can be traced back centuries, it has attracted much popularity in recent decades, and has quickly become a growing sport. Various one-on-one matches and tournaments have aired on ESPN. To keep up with its popularity, one group has recently opened up a brand new cornhole facility in Somers Point.

Cornhole Craze is the first and only facility dedicated to the game in the state of New Jersey, and one of the largest in the entire country. The 8,000 square foot facility celebrated its grand opening in mid-February, and is quickly attracting new patrons.

The space includes up to 10 lanes where anyone can try their hand at the game, from the most casual and avid player to professionals.

Escaping the Wine Rut

A

glass of wine should, at its best, be far more than something to mindlessly sip or wash down a meal with. Wine has the power to transport us; to inspire, seduce, and completely envelop us. Yet for many vino enthusiasts, the magic of wine becomes lost in the humdrum habits of a busy life. Do you typically buy a case of the same wine, and drink it exclusively before restocking with more of the same?

If so, your once-favorite wine’s flavors could have become mere white noise.

There’s merit to finding what you like and sticking to it, but if you’re itching for something new, I’m ready with suggestions for your next bottle.

In my experience, Malbec is so often the culprit when falling into a wine-rut.

With its silky fruit, spicy intrigue, and perfect price-point, I can certainly see why. Luckily, there are myriad alternatives that could fit the same bill. Carmenere (such as Chono, $12.99) shares Malbec’s unique French and South American history.

The darling grape of Chile, it offers the same dark fruit flavors as Malbec, elevated with a distinctive pepperiness and soft smoky notes. Italian favorite Rosso di Montalcino (such as Camigliano, $20.99), is another option. It offers the same spice, herb, and violet notes of a Malbec, but in a distinctly Italian package that begs to be savored slowly.

Chardonnay, with its unique richness and harvest flavors, seems like a tough act to follow. True as that may be, Viognier (like Tim Smith, $19.99), is a great follow-up to Chardonnay.

With low acidity, a plush mouthfeel, and fruit-forward flavors, it’s just different enough to put a new spark in your wine routine. Rousanne (Writer’s Block, $17.99), is another little-known alternative featuring familiar pear and apple flavors, followed by layers of herbs and honey to kick it up a notch.

The popularity of California red blends such as Apothic has been climbing the charts. These decadent, jammy blends are filled with familiar

flavors of berry, vanilla, and mocha.

While these trendy wines contain multiple varietals, they typically rely on Zinfandel and Syrah to carry their flavor. To mix it up, cut out the supporting roles and try a Zin (like Peachy Canyon, $19.99) or Syrah (Truchard, $24.99) on its own. These will offer the same luxurious drinkability you’re used to, but with a more focused and intriguing flavor profile.

Sauvignon Blanc lovers usually gravitate towards the zesty, citrusy tang of New Zealand’s style. But with so many regions across the world making equally fabulous Sauv Blanc, it’s worth doing some exploring.

here comes a moment every year when we begin to notice that the birds are chirping in the morning and the sun is shining later into the day.

We look around and notice the grass slowly coming back to life and feel the warmth of sunshine on our skin.

We made it through another South Jersey winter.

This week we have been given the gift of beautiful, sunshiney, warm weather. While we haven’t officially crossed the Spring threshold yet, it is right around the corner. After a winter unlike any we have experienced before, we are all itching to get out and enjoy the warm, fresh air.

Check out some of these unique ways to enjoy the change of seasons in South Jersey.

Locals’ Spring On The Beach We always talk about enjoying “Locals’ Summer” at the end of the summer season. The beaches and boardwalks are equally as enjoyable

pre-summer. Of course, you likely won’t be jumping the waves but there is nothing like a nice afternoon on the sand before the busy summer season. Get out and enjoy our beautiful backyard beaches. We could all use a little Vitamin Sea. Start A New Garden Many families picked up gardening as a new hobby over the last year of being home. Whether you spruce up your current garden or start a new one, gardening can be a great opportunity to bond with your family over Spring weather. Some great crops to plant in the Spring include honeydew, cucumber, beets, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and broccoli. Visit your local garden center for everything you need to get started.

Visit a Local Farm Spring weather brings fresh, new energy. The animals feel the excitement too and want to share the joy.

An oldie but goodie idea is “kindness rocks.” On your next stroll around the neighborhood, pick up a few larger-sized rocks to paint some kind messages on, then redistribute them for your neighbors to enjoy.

Simple Leprechaun Tricks and “Lucky” Marshmallow Treats for St. Patrick’s Day

side from leaving a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, leprechauns are also known to be a bit mischievous; playing tricks on all those they meet. Want to get into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day in your house? Here is a list of quick and simple leprechaun tricks to surprise your family on St. Patrick’s Day that require little to no prep time, minor expense and zero crafting.

Go Green When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, green food coloring is your best friend.

Begin your morning by adding green food coloring to your toilet water for a fun bathroom surprise. Or, add green food coloring to tint your milk or drinking water and leave it waiting in the refrigerator. (Bonus tip: adults ages 21 years or older can also use food coloring to turn their favorite lager-style beer green). You can also add green food coloring to your bath water, or pick up a green bath bomb or green fizzy bath tabs for an added trick.

Make a Mischievous Mess There’s a leprechaun on the loose and he is causing one big mess. Turn your furniture upside down, hide important objects, like remote controls, cell phones and favorite toys, and empty drawers and trash cans — all while blaming that mischievous leprechaun.

Green Eats Reach for your green food coloring again and have your leprechaun whip up some green foods for St. Patrick’s Day. Make green waffles, pancakes or scrambled eggs.

You can also use food coloring in ice cream and milkshakes, cheese sauces (like green Mac ’n Cheese), mashed potatoes, popcorn, cakes, cookies and frosting.

Victory Over Polio A Look Back at Ocean City

“R

esort Lifeguard Is Laid Low by Paralysis” was the front page headline in the June 10, 1941 Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The following was printed under Karl Scott’s picture: “Infantile paralysis has laid low a veteran Ocean City lifeguard, Karl Scott, shown here in a picture taken last summer, his fourth on the Beach Patrol.”

The article reported, “Scott, known to hundreds for his work on the 17th Street beach, was stricken with the dread disease about five weeks ago and had been confined at the University of Pennsylvania hospital most of the time since, until he was taken home last week.

“The guard climaxed his local beach career last year by being chosen as one of the 10 members of the uniformed color guard which raised and lowered the flag at the Music Pier.”

The article ended encouraging

support for the polio stricken lifeguard: “Captain Jack G. Jernee, head of the Beach Patrol, is urging Scott’s friends to help cheer him up by remembrance cards or personal visits.”

With one of their own contracting polio, the lifeguards joined the March of Dimes, an organization founded

by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 as a response to an epidemic of polio in the United States.

A commemorative stamp honoring Dr. Jonas Salk was released on May 26, 1999.

Lifeguards, led by Fenton Carey and Jack Mintzer, began raising money and giving it to the March of Dimes for polio research and to aid victims

of the disease. Water shows at the Flanders were the main fundraising venue. “Donate and Receive a Pin” was on posters at the Flanders.

Thomas A. Williams became captain of the OCBP in 1942 and continued the patrol’s fight against polio.

Polio cases peaked in 1952 with 57,879 cases being reported in the United States.

Finally, in 1954 a vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was being tested in a few cities including Ocean City. “71 Children Calmly Take 1st Polio Vaccine Shots” was the front page headline in the April 29, 1954 Ocean City 1957 stamp honoring those who helped fight polio Sentinel-Ledger.

How Much Sugar Are You Really Getting?

e all understand too much sugar is a bad thing. We read labels, yet unfortunately, we still consume way too much added sugar. Yes, we need sugar for energy, however the amount of added sugar we consume is far more than needed.

Added sugar is hidden in our favorite foods – there are far too many sneaky sources of added sugar and try to reduce the consumption. In this article I will open your eyes to the things we think are healthy, but in reality, they are defeating our weight loss goals.

A yogurt selection is often chosen by many people to supply us with protein and it does the trick. Most people choose low-fat yogurts to achieve their weight loss goals, but not all low-fat yogurts are flat-belly friendly. For example, Dannon injects their carton with sugar, and since this cartoon is low in digestion-slowing macronutrients like fat and protein, you’re more likely to experience waist-widening spikes in blood sugar after polishing off the container.

Smoothies are yummy, convenient and healthy. However, you better use that blender if you want a healthy smoothie. Bottled smoothies are packed with sugar. Those made at home however, include incredible sources of fiber, such as chia seeds or flaxseeds, healthy fats like avocados or nut butter, and protein like powders or Greek yogurt.

Just a few dried pieces of fruit in a salad shouldn’t hurt. Because they are dried, these snacks are closer to Halloween candies than their original form. Without the water content, sugars become more concentrated – dried fruits are a no-no. What’s worse is that manufacturers often coat the dried-up sweets in more sugar, so read the labels carefully.

We never seem to give ourselves enough time before we run out to the office. Grabbing something quick and easy does the trick. Or does it?

Breakfast bars don’t keep you full for hours, so don’t let yourself be fooled by commercials. In general, oat-based bars contain sugar as the first or second ingredient. These bars aren’t packed with satiating nutrients like fiber and protein.

Stop eating bagels – your waistline will thank you. Bread companies add sugar to their products to be tastier.

Whole-grains may have great fiber-filling benefits, but that’s when they’re used as main ingredients. A plain bagel could add a whopping 235 calories to our daily caloric intake.

You should opt for dairy-free products if your body can’t process lactose and dairy makes your belly all bloated.

Options like Silk’s Vanilla Almond Milk contain more sugar than a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato. Holding 13 grams of sugar is way too much, especially if you’re mixing it with sugar-stocked cereals, or a sugar packet in your morning coffee.

Holding double-digits of sugar, sweetened marinara sauces do not hold up to the ideals of the famous Mediterranean diet. Rather this jar is filled with added sugar itself and inflammatory omega-6s, which may be making you gain belly fat, not lose it.

Dairy contributes naturally occurring lactose, but many brands add additional sweeteners along with the chocolate flavor. Some well-known brands have almost double the sugar as others, so be sure to look at your labels. Unless you’re highly active or engaging in intense exercise, those added calories might not provide many benefits.

Sports beverages are meant for those who practice a sport or those who exercise a lot. If you are the opposite, there’s no need for you to drink this type of beverage. Just stick to water! Sports drinks are actually designed to keep athletes hydrated and satisfied for longer because, during an intense workout, their bodies consume a lot of energy.

Yes, energy drinks are often associated with sugar, but for good reasons. So, if you’re not an athlete or you don’t even

go to the gym, try to avoid them. The best choice for you is plain water.

We try to stay on a healthy eating program eating lots salads and salad dressing is overused. In general, we tend to associate salad dressings with the word “healthy,” mainly because salad dressings are designed for salads, which of course, are more than healthy, are fantastic. Unfortunately, we are far from the truth. If it’s not homemade, your favorite salad dressing hides lots of sugars. Just read the labels, and you’ll find out. In fact, that salad dressing destroys all the benefits you get from a fresh salad. Again, if you are not aware of the ingredients used, don’t use it. It will do more harm than good.

Everyone loves Peanut butter and taking one level scoop from the jar is impossible! This popular food staple is probably found in most American households for many reasons. First of all, it tastes incredible. Secondly, it is

affordable. However, how about being healthy? Organic peanut butter is indeed quite nutritious, providing several health benefits, including minimizing the risk of developing heart disease.

But if you opt for certain peanut butter brands, all those benefits may transform into health disasters. Most peanut butter brands available on the market are packed with tons of the white stuff, so be cautious with what you pick.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

S

pring has finally arrived in southern New Jersey and although this winter has not been especially harsh, most of us are glad to put it behind us and are looking forward to what Spring has to offer. Those days of low, white skies will slowly give way to blue skies and one can look forward to the first number on our digital thermometers being a five or even a six occasionally.

We can poke our head out of the door in the morning and not be greeted by a cold slap across the face by Winter’s hand.

I am frequently joined by other locals who continue to ride their bicycles on Ventnor’s boardwalk regardless of the season. The view of the ocean changes from day to day and sometimes even over the course of a bike ride as winds shift. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is minimal during the off season and one can let the mind drift or take long uninterrupted glances out to sea.

Spring, though as welcome as it is, also brings with it the harbinger of increased boardwalk traffic of all types. Visitors start coming back to the area walking four abreast gazing around like they are looking for their departure gate at Chicago’s O’Hare airport or simply just cluster together taking up one whole side of the boardwalk. Young children on bikes with training wheels are zig zagging out of earshot of their pleading parents to stop. Add to this the baby strollers, skateboarders, occasional in-line skaters, surfers crossing the boardwalk with their gaze tightly focused on the surf and you have a regular potpourri of potential hazards.

This brings me to my favorite and most egregious violators of my attempt at a mind cleansing ride; the Lycra clad, gloved and racing helmeted, shoe clipped Lance Armstrong wannabees. I get the attraction of riding in an environment of clean air

free from close encounters of the metal kind but the practice of using the rest of us as pylons in their quest for a personal best elapsed time has given rise to visions of thrusting a stick through the spokes of the front wheel. I had an experience years ago when I was pushing one of my children in a stroller on the boardwalk while talking to my cousin walking along side.

We moved slightly to our left when we approached a bench and was startled by such a rider who looked back over his right shoulder and yelled, “Why don’t you take up the whole boardwalk? You’re a hazard.” His lack of attention caused him to ride up the nether regions of a runner and they all went down in a tangle of bicycle and body parts.

Not missing the opportunity, I stood over the carnage and yelled at the bicyclist, “Who’s a hazard now.” The runner got up and awkwardly continued his run and the bicyclist also continued on after putting his front

wheel between his legs and straightening the handlebars.

Here’s the thing; the half of the boardwalk on the mainland side provides only 7.5 feet of space from the front of the benches to the center line. Add someone sitting on the bench, that space is reduced to only 6 feet of space for bicyclists, strollers, runners and group meetings before crossing the line into oncoming traffic.

The summer weekends, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day are especially crowded but offers a challenge that is hard to resist. The blissful rides on an empty boardwalk are surely pleasant enough but at times there is something to be said for facing the crucible that is the summer boardwalk and returning home intact.

Vegetable Soup Asti Style

W

hen I say the word “Asti” what is the first thing that comes to mind? My guess is it may be Asti Spumante, Italy’s famous sparkling wine. Spumante (meaning “sparkling wine” in Italian) is a white wine made with Moscato Bianco grapes from Italy's Piedmont wine region. Its production is mainly focused around Alba and the province of Asti in my home area of the Pied-

montese in northern Italy.

However, there are many famous foods done in the Asti or Piedmontese style, one of which is a very delicious vegetable soup which I’m sharing with you here.

During the cool, windy months here at the Jersey Shore, there’s nothing like a hot bowl of soup to make you feel warm inside and out.

This soup, like many of the recipes

made by Nonnas throughout Italy, probably originated because people lived in very rural areas and didn’t have very much money. They were farmers or winemakers and usually lived off their land – in those days there wasn’t a big grocery store in the town they could go to for groceries.

Therefore, they became very creative in using all the ingredients they had on hand, and they didn’t waste anything, even food scraps.

This soup uses white haricot beans, which we know in America as cannellini beans. Like other bean soups, it also uses pasta, primarily the small, round cut called ditalini, or rice to “stretch” out the ingredients.

Remember, in those days families were large and there were a lot of mouths to feed.

Here is an original recipe for Vegetable Soup Asti Style, which I ate frequently when I was growing up.

My mother used to add the heel of Parmesan cheese to the soup when it was cooking for additional flavor, so if you have one on hand throw it into the pot.

Vegetable Soup Asti Style (Piedmont) (Serves 6 to 8) 1 pound dried cannellini beans, soaked overnight* ● 16 cups (4 quarts) water (decrease slightly if using canned beans) ● 1 small cabbage, shredded ● 4 medium-sized russet potatoes, peeled and diced ● 2 carrots, diced ● 2 to 3 celery stalks, chopped ● Salt to taste ● ¾ pound ditalini pasta or rice** ● ½ pound salt pork, diced *** ● 2 cloves garlic ● 2 to 3 sprigs parsley, finely chopped ● 10 to 12 fresh basil leaves, chopped ● 4 ounces grated Parmesan cheese ● White pepper and salt to taste ● Extra-virgin olive oil to drizzle on top when serving.

Rinse and pick through dried beans; put in a pot and cover with water by two inches Soak overnight. Drain, then put the beans in a large pot, add the 16 cups of water and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour. (If using canned beans, skip this step. Just add beans and water with the cabbage and other ingredients in step 2.)

Add cabbage, potatoes, carrots, celery and salt to taste, and continue to simmer for 40 minutes.

Add the noodles (or rice) and cook for another 10 to 12 minutes over high heat (15-20 minutes for rice).

Meanwhile, pound the salt pork to a paste with the garlic, parsley and basil. Add the grated cheese and dilute with a few tablespoons of the vegetable stock. (This can be done in a food processor.)

Pour the mixture into the soup; stir well. Continue to simmer the soup for an additional 10 to 15 minutes to heat the pork mixture thoroughly.

Season with a little white pepper and additional salt, if needed. Serve immediately, drizzling each bowl with a little olive oil.

Note: * 4 (15-ounce) cans cannellini beans, rinsed and drained, can be substituted. Start with 14 to 15 cups of water; add more if necessary. ** Ditalini are tiny, thimble-shaped noodles. Other small, round pasta can be substituted. *** Thick cut bacon can be substituted. ●

Connecting with the Commissioner of the MAAC Basketball Tournament Views from the Shore

ne of the many things I enjoy about being a sports fan is that sports provide a common ground for discussion for so many people. These discussions can then lead to friendships and professional & personal growth. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Mukesh Roy who serves as a volunteer member of Shore’s Board of Trustees. Like me, he is a big basketball fan and we have had some great chats about the Sixers and college ball.

Dr. Roy contacted me recently with such a sense of excitement in his voice about the MAAC tournament coming to Atlantic City and he told me that two of Shore’s orthopaedic

doctors, Dr Norman Johanson and Dr. Steven Cetel, would be the attending physicians for the games.

He then introduced me to Richard Ensor, the MAAC Commissioner, who I had a chance to talk with about the tournament, the challenges of the pandemic, and why they selected Atlantic City.

Here’s what Richard had to say: In 2019 the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), which is one of 31 Division I conferences’ that annually participate in ‘March Madness’, announced it would conduct its annual men’s and women’s basketball championships in Atlantic City for 2020-22. “It’s a great thrill for me personally to have the MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships hosted by Atlantic City in the world-famous Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall,” noted MAAC Commissioner Richard Ensor in 2019. “As a lifelong resident of the Jersey shore I know what a great destination site Atlantic City will be with numerous entertainment, hotel, gaming and dining options to compliment an exciting week of

Little did I realize in 2019 that our commitment to Atlantic City would be challenged by a world-wide pandemic. We all remember the dramatic end to the 2020 championships following game three of the women’s quarterfinals. This decision was painful, but necessary, as the NCAA and all Division I conferences recognized the need to shut down college sports for the safety of participants and fans.

As we start the 2021 championships we do so after careful study of safety procedures working in tandem with our institutional medical teams, and state and local health authorities.

Unfortunately, this has meant that only friends and families of the student-athletes and coaches can attend the championships. The decision was made with great care by the conference membership based on local and state guidelines.

Fortunately, the MAAC’s ESPN partners will ensure that all championship games will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks which include various linear and digital platforms.

The MAAC is committed to Atlantic City and having its premier sporting event in a region recognized as a year-round destination that is growing with exciting attractions. The MAAC schools selected AC because it is an area that features exquisite dining, outlet and boutique shopping, world-class entertainment, and much more. More than 250,000 attendees witnessed world-class entertainment and shows at the

historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in 2019. The interest in Atlantic City remains strong within the MAAC membership which had a glimpse of what could become a great annual site for the championships before last year’s abrupt shutdown.

“Monmouth is delighted that the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be coming to Atlantic City. The city has shown a great interest in being our host, and the venue will be a wonderful draw for our fans and friends,” said Monmouth University Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil in 2019. “We believe that this decision by the MAAC Presidents will lead to a fabulous destination opportunity for MAAC fans, students, and our student-athletes.”

he Wetlands Institute is a Non-profit Organization based in Stone Harbor (1075 Stone Harbor Blvd, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247). Established in the late 1960s by long-time conservationist, Herbert Mills, they have evolved to become one of the leading environmental research institutes in the country. The goals of the organization are three-fold: 1) Teach people of all ages the value of wetlands and coastal ecosystems for the survival of life on earth; 2) Conduct cutting-edge research regarding wetlands and coastal ecosystems; and 3) Encourage stewardship of these ecosystems worldwide.

So the questions is, why do TWI do what they do? Coastal wetlands provide coastal communities with a whole host of different services,

and provide habitats for a lot of the seafood we eat. Without them, you would not be able to eat most of the seafood you enjoy.

Some of their most dedicated research is focused on the adorable terrapin. Diamondback terrapins, the species found in TWI, are relatively small turtles that live in salt marshes along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. They are the only turtle species in North America which live in brackish water (a mix of salt and fresh water). However, with

rehabilitate injured adult terrapins, track wild populations, distribute special “Bycatch Reduction Devices” to fishermen, retrieve “ghost traps”, and provide education to the public about the importance of terrapins to the coastal ecosystem. The main thing to remember is, if it is not in immediate danger, leave it alone!

Another species TWI have dedicated themselves to conserving is the Horseshoe Crab. These creatures are dubbed “living fossils” because they are the last survivors of a group of organisms that first appeared in the fossil record 350 million years ago.

The largest population of Horseshoe Crabs in the world is in Delaware Bay. They are a keystone species, making them of paramount importance for the survival of many species,

including humans. Remarkably, their blood contains a clotting agent, LAL (Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate), which provides a fast, reliable test for the presence of infectious bacteria in drugs. Furthermore, it can be used in prosthetic devices such as heart valves and hip replacements. However, due to habitat destruction and over harvesting, the Horseshoe Crab population in Delaware Bay has reduced by almost 90% in the last 15 year s . T WI have initiated a hatchery program where they collect fertilized eggs with the correct permits and rears the eggs under controlled conditions in their aquarium. They are then raised in culture tanks, free of predation, until they are ready to be released into wild again. This dramatically increases the populations of Horseshoe Crabs.

The Wetlands Institute provide affordable educational sessions for school-ages kids (virtual and in-person), paid internship opportunities

for college students, and a Science Education at Sea Program which allows kids to get hands-on experience whilst learning about marine life. With education being key when it comes to sustainable environmental conservation, TWI are leading the way in how it should be done. In 2019, they inspired more than 11,000 school children to become environmental stewards. Even in the face of COVID-19, they are dedicated to continuing this educational outreach and now provide the option to participate in some of the courses virtually. Apple TV’s ‘The Servant’ films in Ocean City “Servant” is described as a dark, complex and very bingeable series.

The scenes are reportedly part of a third season for the series, expected to premier next year.

The second season of “Servant” premiered on Jan. 15 on the subscription streaming service. Film director Shyamalan, who set “The Sixth Sense” in Philadelphia, is an executive producer of the series, along with Tony Basgallop.

Karen Bergman, an Ocean City Councilwoman who is the director of catering at The Flanders, said filming did not take place in the historic hotel, but outside on the beach and boardwalk.

The crew was not in town long, setting a staging area in the Flanders’ parking lot and completing filming in one day.

The Uncle George production company website shows the series was also filming in Philadelphia earlier this year. No one from that company responded to a request for comment. The NJ Motion Picture and Television Commission lists the shoot as scheduled for March, along with multiple other projects being filmed in New Jersey.

The news that the filming took place locally received an enthusiastic response online.

“This is so awesome,” wrote one member of the Facebook group “OCNJ Chatter,” while another wrote “Very cool.”

CEAN CITY – Psychological horror came to the Ocean City Boardwalk on Saturday, as a crew filmed on the beach and boardwalk for the M. Night Shyamalan series “Servant” on Apple TV+.

The cast and crew, including about 65 people, set up at The Flanders Hotel for the shoot, according to Doug Bergen, a spokesman for the city.

Several residents and visitors posted to Facebook that they were psyched to see their favorite beach town included in a show. One woman posted images of the shoot, showing a crowd on the boardwalk, and a notice from Uncle George Productions stating that those who did not want to be photographed should leave the area.

“Servant” is set in Philadelphia, following a couple who hired a nanny to look after their baby son. It’s described as a psychological horror series starring Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell and Nell Tiger Free, who also played Myrcella Baratheon on Game of Thrones.

Ocean City is a great place to film on location, according to local resident Birch Miles, who has worked extensively in television and film. It provides a beautiful setting and it’s an enjoyable place for the working crew to spend some time.

“I’ve worked on both sides of the camera,” he said, mostly in New York but also in Philadelphia and in California. He’s also brought people to Ocean City, including for musical productions. “I found that people really love coming here to work. It’s a really good place to shoot.”

He said production companies often film exterior scenes and establish shots, while interior scenes are more likely to take place on a soundstage rather than on location. For instance, he said, he saw a small film crew on the beach early one morning.

“It was just getting light enough to see the waves. I was checking the surf,” he said.

“It was what in film we call the B unit.”

The crew was capturing images to give the film a sense of place. In this case, it was for “Girl Most Likely” with Kristen Wiig, which also included scenes filmed in Atlantic City.

Ocean City has also been the site of filming for other projects, including the 2005

David Schwimmer vehicle “Duane Hopwood” and the coming-of-age romantic drama “That Night” filmed in downtown Ocean City in the early 1990s.

Two of the most famous films featuring this area date from the 1980s. With its Tony Marts setting, “Eddie and the Cruisers” holds a status close to legend on the South Jersey shore. And in 1980, “Atlantic City” with Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon opened to critical acclaim.

Ocean City has had plenty of time on the small screen as well. Last year, the HGTV show “Beachfront Bargain Hunt” was filmed in Ocean City, following Stephanie and Stephen Scibal’s search for a house in the beach resort.

That episode originally aired Feb. 17, 2020.

Area officials were less pleased when a season seven episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” aired on FXX in 2015, with scenes shot in beach towns throughout the area. The caustic outlook of the show extended to a beach vacation. The seventh season episode “The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore” includes stray dogs wandering the beach, locals smoking angel dust and a disturbing moment that appears to have been filmed under the Ocean City Music Pier.

The episode includes footage taken in several towns, with the characters only ever describing it as “the Jersey Shore,” and includes some scenes clearly filmed on the Ocean City Boardwalk.

Discover Lamb Camp at Misty Meadows Sheep Dairy

ecently, I spent some time at Misty Meadow Sheep Dairy in the Petersburg section of Upper Township. As I stepped onto the soil of the sprawling 16 acres of land that is the

only Grade A Dairy farm in South Jersey, I instantly felt at home. This is especially surprising because home for me is usually a salty ocean mist and views of the back bay. I don’t know if it was the herd of dogs running past me as I entered the gates, the soft echo of bleating newborn lambs or being greeted by an old friend, but I was home.

This is precisely what Bill and Barbara Simmerman, the hardworking duo behind Misty Meadow, were aiming for when they moved back to New Jersey several years ago after realizing they were not the “retiring in Florida” type. Since opening their post-retirement labor of love, they have worked relentlessly to make their dream of having a haven for families (theirs and yours) to gather, learn about the dairy process, and spend much-needed time reconnecting with nature. They do this in all sorts of different ways, but my personal favorite is their Lamb Camp.

session, each paid camper gets to care for a newborn lamb—everything from keeping them company and cleaning them to bottle-feeding. The dairy just ended their first lamb camp weekend, which runs Fridays – Sundays from March 5th to May 23rd and is $25 per one-hour session. “Everyone had a great time, especially the adults,” said Britney Schroder, one

ello and welcome to the month of March! It’s hard to believe that we are basically at the one-year anniversary of things really shutting down for the pandemic and such.

Thankfully, I’ve always associated the month of March with basketball and March Madness, and there are telltale signs of that sport returning all around.

Since I last wrote, the Sixers two biggest stars had to sit out the NBA all-star game because of COVID protocols. On the college level though, the MAAC Tournament is back at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Will you fill out a NCAA Tournament bracket this year? In hockey, the Flyers finally got to play in front of their home fans, but the orange & black are on the outside looking in at the playoff picture right now. The Phillies are making their way through a spring training schedule of games, while mourning the loss of a former teammate. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is in the news about his

reported stance on whether or not the Birds should draft a QB this April. The Eagles are also mourning the loss of a former player. Finally, on the local level, the area high school basketball season is in the books, and one local girls coach decides to hang up his whistle.

From the entertainment world, there’s a new drama on television based off a very successful movie that I’m watching. Plus, did you catch the four-part docuseries on TNT about their signature program “Inside the NBA”...? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● The Sixers went into the all-star break with the best record in the Eastern Conference at 24-12. That was a half a game better than Brooklyn, but lookout as the Nets signed former All-Star Blake Griffin during the break. That means the Nets now have Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, James Harden and Blake Griffin on the same team. Um, WOAH! ● As for the Sixers, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons each had to miss the All-Star Game in Atlanta because of contract tracing. Before they arrived in Atlanta, each guy was

exposed to a Philadelphia-area barber who has tested positive for COVID-19. So, they each missed the game in Atlanta, but now the question becomes, will they be cleared and ready to go when the Sixers play in Chicago on Thursday night?

The duo needs to continue to test negative for five consecutive days before they can rejoin the team.

In that second half of the season, coach Doc Rivers’ biggest challenge might be to keep his team healthy.

The Sixers are scheduled to play 36 games over 67 days once the second half begins. They’ll have nine back-to-backs, with three sets per month in March, April, and May. Put me in the category of someone who wants the Sixers to make a move prior to the NBA Trade Deadline on March 25th. In recent days, the names Larry Nance Jr. and Zach Levine have been floated out in different stories from different outlets. See, things in the NBA are never easy, because the money has to match up in any trade. Even still, I see Brooklyn adding talent, and hope the Sixers are able to do the same.

A little closer to home, the MAAC Tournament is going on right now at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

This is fitting because last year, that event never really got going as the pandemic shut everything down.

The fans that are attending are socially distanced and mostly made up of “friends and families” of the participating programs.

In a press release, Rich Ensor, the MAAC Commissioner said "This is a significant first step in the return to athletic competition in New Jersey and the MAAC membership is pleased to be the first event in Boardwalk Hall since last March when the pandemic abruptly shut down March Madness." He continued, "For most MAAC basketball fans we offer the promise that in 2022 the conference expects full normalization of operations at the championships including the Fan Fest and the many schoolchildren related activities that were planned for the Atlantic City community last year."

I’ll just add on top of that and say “here’s hoping!” The MAAC and their partnership with Atlantic City seems promising. Once it can fully get going and underway.

One last item on college basketball now as I recently came across a picture of myself and Kyle Korver from what was then called “Arch

Madness” in St. Louis in 2003. I was lucky enough to cover the 6-7 Korver for all four years of his college career at Creighton and the Bluejays were then in the Missouri Valley Conference, which they won in 2003 and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 18 years later, Korver is taking some time off from basketball and contemplating retirement. I will say this, even though he turns 40-years-old on St. Patrick’s Day, Korver most definitely can still knock down 3’s in the NBA. The question is, does he still want to? No matter what, I’m proud to have been associated with and a friend to a 17-year NBA player.

In hockey, the Flyers sit on the outside looking in at the playoff picture after losing two out of three in Pittsburgh and then returning home to the Wells Fargo Center only to lose 3-1 to the Washington Capitals.

The good news is, that just over 3,000 fans were able to attend last Sunday night’s game. The first time they had a crowd for any sporting event there in 362 days.

What’s the biggest problem with the Flyers right now? Well, simply put, their special teams are not very…um…special! They are 28th out of 31 teams on the penalty kill – successful just 72.2% of the time – and 22nd on the power play (18% success rate). A year ago, they were in the top 15 in both categories: the penalty kill was 11th at 81.8%, and the power play was 14th at 20.8%.

One positive note is that the Flyers are shooting the puck more lately.

After all, you can’t score if you don’t SHOOT. To expand on that, the Flyers had 35 or more shots in six of their last seven games after not surpassing 31 shots in any of their first 15 contests. Again, you can’t score if you don’t SHOOT the puck!

Perhaps the top story out of Phillies Spring Training right now is the health of catcher J.T. Realmuto.

There’s good news on that front as Realmuto is no longer wearing a cast and looks to be on track to be ready for opening day.

In centerfield however, Adam Haseley has been forced out of the competition there with a groin strain.

Roman Quinn has gotten consideration because of his speed, but he hasn’t been very successful so far this spring with the bat. To me, the leader so far is Odubel Herrera. Of course, he comes with the baggage of his off-the-field incident in Atlantic City in 2018, but so far, he seems to be doing everything right and saying all the right things. An All-Star in 2017, Herrera would also provide a left-handed bat to a right-handedheavy lineup. We shall see.

I do want to acknowledge the passing of former Phillies relief pitcher Rheal Cormier. Known as “Frenchy” to his teammates and friends, the 16-year MLB player died on Monday from cancer. Cormier, a native of Canada, spent six seasons with the Phillies (2001-06) and his 363 appearances trail only Tug McGraw as the most in franchise history by a left-handed reliever. His best season came in 2003 when he went 8-0 with a 1.70 ERA, which was the second-lowest mark that season by a reliever and the sixth-lowest by a Phillies reliever since 1900. “Frenchy” thanks for the memories! You will be missed.

Which leaves me with the Eagles as the big news on that front is with regard to the owner Jeffrey Lurie. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Lurie has told his team to prioritize making Jalen Hurts the starting quarterback next season and not to draft a QB with the #6 pick overall. Let me say this, I have a major problem with that. Yes, he’s the owner of the team and it’s his team to do with what he wants. However, I think if Lurie is as involved as the reports indicate, this is a trouble development for me. Owners should not be making personnel decisions, in my opinion.

One other Eagles note and that’s about Irv Cross, a former Eagles great who passed away between my last column and this one. When

I was a kid, I had the opportunity to attend the Eagles Fly for Leukemia golf tournament as it was played at a country club that bordered my house. I vividly remember getting an autograph from Irv Cross and having someone point out to me that “you see him on CBS each Sunday!” Cross passed away last week at age 81. The Hammond, Indiana native played for nine seasons in the NFL, but I’ll remember him as the first Black person to do TV sports reports in Philadelphia and as the first Black host of a network NFL pregame show. R.I.P. Mr. Cross.

Locally, please allow me a moment to acknowledge the outstanding career of Ocean City Girls Basketball Coach Paul Baruffi. The 56-year-old has announced that he is stepping down after 20 seasons with the Red Raiders.

In his time, OC has won 429 games and lost just 129. That’s an incredible 300 wins above the .500 mark! His 429 wins rank third among the Cape Atlantic League coaches for the girls, trailing only Steve DiPatri of Wildwood Catholic and Dave Troiano, the recently retired coach from Wildwood. Baruffi has a 54-18 record in the NJSIAA Tournament. His teams won eight South Jersey championships, including last season, the most by any CAL girls coach. Plus, his last five teams played in South Jersey finals, winning four of them. Finally, a total of 11 of this teams reached the South Jersey championship game.

Oh, and the 2013 team won a state championship, the only one in OCHS girls basketball history. Baruffi leaves after two great decades of basketball. Coach…you will be missed!

As always, I’ll close with entertainment as I am 3 or 4 episodes into the show “Clarice” on CBS. It’s based off the 1991 movie starring Jodie Foster as the TV show picks up in 1993 after the events surrounding “Buffalo Bill”.

The description for the show is that "Clarice" offers a deep dive into the untold personal story of FBI Agent Clarice Starling as she returns to the field in 1993, one year after the events of "The Silence of the Lambs."

Brilliant and vulnerable, Clarice's bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to her.

However, her complex psychological makeup that comes from a challenging childhood empowers her to begin to find her voice while working in a man's world, as well as escape the family secrets that have haunted her throughout her life. So far, it’s a great premise, but I’m not sure I’m going to be able to stick with it much longer.

What I will always turn to however, is “Inside the NBA” on TNT. No matter what my mood is, watching Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal host that program is almost always TV gold.

The folks at TNT began to shoot a docuseries last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the program, but then they got enough footage

to air a four-part series around the All-Star break. If you didn’t see them, search them out on the web as they are awesome! Especially episode 3 called “The Entertainer” that features Charles Barkley. Each of the four episodes were great, but the Barkley one was the best in my opinion.

I’ll close with my reminder to keep wearing those masks and staying socially distant please. Vaccines continue to be given out in New Jersey with more and more people getting vaccinated every day. I’m fortunate enough to announce that I am now “fully vaccinated” and I hope that you will do the same. Hopefully “normal” is coming soon!

Clearing The Hurdles To Getting People Of Color In Atlantic City Vaccinated Against Covid 19

ver the next few months we will bring you accurate information about Atlantic City’s and South Jersey’s fight against Covid 19. We will discuss how children have been able to eat without school lunch and the efforts for families to eat with earners out of work. We will discuss the digital divide and how lack of wi-fi and computer access has affected students. We will discuss how some students can try to recover from a year without in person learning and what plans are being made to reach out to students that have given up on school.

Today we discuss the two headed monster of A. vaccine accessibility in Atlantic City and B.How history now impedes the progress which should be gained by the vaccine being available to

the black community.

Amanda Medina-Forrester is the executive director of the Office of Minority and Multicultural Health and works for The NJ Department of Health. Ms. Medina-Forrester recently shared NJ statistics that suggest that Covid 19 fatalities are more likely (almost double) if you are Black and (almost triple) if you are latino/hispanic.

Ms. Medina-Forrester explained that factors that contribute to these numbers are poverty, access to health care, the fact that many of the daily front line workers in healthcare and public jobs are Blacks and Latino/Hispanics and language barriers.

Ms. Medina-Forrester explained that the goal is to get 70% of NJ vaccinated by the end of June, however efforts are being made to make minority vaccination a priority.

In opposition to these goals is the history of the U.S Government’s indifference to people of color’s health and outright cruelty. For example, The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male was an ethically unjustified study conducted between 1932 and 1972 by the United States Public Health Service and the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention.

While Tuskegee is the most famous it is not the only event to endanger Black People in the name of science.

Ms. Medina-Forrester admits “There is a lot of vaccine hesitancy in regards to people of color. For every right. History cannot be changed. Every vaccine journey is different. The privileged person has a different experience than somebody who's not. I think this is where it takes a lot of boots on the ground, a lot of our community based organizations, a lot of our faith based organizations to help.

Kaleem Shabazz is the President of The Atlantic City Chapter of The NAACP. Shabbazz has committed his organization to battle health disparities in Atlantic City long before Covid 19 was the biggest issue on the table. Now with the vaccine still scarce but people of color reluctant, Shabazz has made “Shots In Arms” the battle of the moment. Shabazz like everyone in health, admits to the wrongs of the past but strongly encourages the people of Atlantic City to get vaccinated when it’s available.

Shabazz and The NAACP are fighting the battles of accessibility as well.

Shabazz has fielded complaints that vaccination appointments are mainly available only online and there are no appointments available online. Calling the phone number almost never works.

If you get an appointment at the mega site there are issues of transportation and parking. During an hour long discussion Shabazz discussed all of these issues and what he’s working on to clear these hurdles. “We will continue to work with faith based locations such as

churches, temples and mosques as they allow people to be vaccinated. We plan to establish pop up vaccination sites in our neighborhoods as soon as humanly possible. Frankly, accessibility right now is a problem and the hurdles that our residents are expected to jump, is unacceptable. Especially with children out of school, people standing in line for food and job/economic uncertainty.

WE HAVE TO BRING THE VACCINE TO WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE.” Shabazz knows that getting Atlantic city 100% vaccinated is a long shot even in a city known for gambling but that is what he and The NAACP are aiming for. To that end until the vaccine appointments become easier to acquire, Shabazz has asked that Atlantic City residents (AC residents only) contact him at 609957-0441 with their date of birth and name. Shabazz has been successfully working with Atlanticare to get appointments for vaccination. He humbly suggests that you first use the website www.Covid19.nj.gov and only contact him if you are unsuccessful there.

Perspective - Part 2

n my last column I wrote about shifting your perspective. I compared how people in Florida may define “cold” as 60 degrees and elsewhere in the country may consider that mild if not balmy especially this time of year. The takeaway is that how we view things has an impact on how we initiate and respond to certain things, people and situations in our lives.

I want to take that idea a step further. When I am brought into a company or team to help them grow in the areas of personal and professional development, we talk about the importance of perspective. I share with them how their perspective on the job and as an employee has a huge impact on the success or failure of their business and their personal career. We talk about how too many people today few their jobs as just that “a job” or a means to an end. Because you think you have no vested interest in a business's success or failure, you can tend to treat your job as just a paycheck and nothing more.

I challenge them to look at their position on the job from the perspective of their leaders or the ownership of their company. Most people see no correlation between their employers' success and their own. But this couldn’t be further from reality. You may have heard the saying that a rising tide lifts

all boats. It’s true. It’s more than just a cute saying. When you succeed, the company succeeds and when the company succeeds, you succeed.

You may have experienced a situation where you worked so much harder than your fellow employees and have been passed over for a promotion or haven’t gotten the raise. This is where the concept of looking at the big picture plays such a pivotal role. The truth is, long-term you can never go wrong by viewing your job as an owner might or someone with ‘skin in the game.’

The bottomline is when you approach your role on a team from this perspective, one of three things will happen.

1. You will get noticed, receive a promotion and rise through the ranks to higher responsibility and a greater role.

2. You will discover in yourself traits, talents and abilities you didn’t realize you had and in the process get a new appreciation and perspective on your potential for growth.

3. You will conclude that your current place and position isn’t a good fit and move on to a place where talent, hard work and initiative are appreciated and rewarded.

Any way you look at it, you come out a winner!

Staying motivated is the greatest challenge Shore Fit

e all begin our fitness journey with a similar goal in mind: a conscious choice for self-improvement. Fitness achievements are reached through hard work, dedication and motivation.

Before you get ahead of yourself, start with what your body can handle. Those goals can grow into more goals, constantly striving for progress that challenges your body to keep improving, physically.

Set yourself up for success. Find a gym, running course or studio you want to try out. Do your research, ask friends, or even post on social media for recommendations.

Then, make sure you have all the necessary items you need in order to get the most out of every workout.

Buy yourself a calendar or journal to plan out your weekly exercises and fitness goals. Having a schedule will help you stay on track, even when your motivation starts to fade. This will keep you accountable. I write out all my workouts and put them on my refrigerator and cross off each as I’ve finished them. It’s old school, I know, but it really gives me that sense of accomplishment as I get to draw that line through a completed workout. When the week is done, I see all I’ve accomplished and it feels terrific. It goes in the trash and a new one

is made on Sunday.

Use a journal to write down goals and details regarding your workouts. When times get tough and you feel like throwing in the towel, refer to the first week of your journey and reflect on all of the progress you've made since.

A supportive family or friend is another way to stay motivated. It feels really good having someone close to you tell you how proud they are of you.

If your goal is to lose 10 pounds or 10 inches, keep a page in your journal of your progress and check off each pound or inch you lose. This small action will have you celebrating even the smallest wins, which will bring you one step closer to your goal.

Add diversity to your workouts. Your body will have better results if you constantly switch it up and keep your muscles guessing. Find a few exercises you're truly passionate about. Once you've found your personalized niche, you'll start to enjoy your workout. Before you know it, your favorite workout classes will transform from dreaded chores to something to look forward to.

It's important to continually set new goals, both short-term and long-term.

When all aspects of your life evolve in a healthier direction, your fitness goals and overall health will be complete. We all have a million excuses to neglect our workouts, but none of them are as important as our personal health.
