Vaccination Process Too Slow For Many

he Covid-19 vaccine is in high demand in South Jersey and is causing increasing frustration among eligible recipients, as supply is scarce. There are currently 10 vaccine distribution locations in Atlantic County, all of which are currently not taking appointments, including the mega site at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

While many who are seeking the vaccine understand that supplies are limited, it is the scheduling and distribution hiccups that are most frustrating.

“I have been trying to schedule my 86-year-old mother for a vaccine appointment for days. She is a cancer survivor with atrial fibrillation. I joined the queue over an hour before appointments opened up then was assigned a number well into the 20,000s, only to find out by the time I got into the next virtual room that there were only 900 injections left and my position in line had

been canceled,” explained Cheryl Bailey of Somers Point.

Stories like Cheryl’s seem to be the norm, rather than the exception. A quick scroll through the comments section of any vaccine related posts will quickly demonstrate the collective frustration.

A few of the comments include: “My appointment was canceled after waiting a month due to low supply” “Many of us seniors have spent weeks on the phone trying to get appointments for the vaccine to no avail.”

“My parents, my sister, and myself have been sitting by multiple computers each day trying to get a slot. None of has been successful.”

Until more vaccines become available, distribution is limited to healthcare personnel, long-term care patients and staff, first responders, and high risk individuals. In addition to individuals over 65, those with preexisting conditions including cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, down syndrome, obesity, heart conditions, sickle cell disease, smokers, and Type II diabetes fall into the high-risk category (2B).

Many eligible recipients over 65 either do not have access to computers or do not know how to navigate the scheduling platforms, leaving their adult children working to obtain appointments for their

parents. Those who have been able to land appointments went to great lengths to do so.

“I was able to get my family registered, but it took days and a lot of luck. We logged into the site one hour before it was set to take appointments. We had every device in the house logged in and after about one week, we finally got lucky,” shared Brittany Burns of Egg Harbor Township.

Others are resorting to traveling out of the area for a vaccine.

Many Atlantic County residents have traveled to other counties and even as far as Pennsylvania where they were able to schedule an appointment.

As frustrations rise, officials including Gov. Phil Murphy are asking for patience.

Vaccination centers are being expanded and it is anticipated that more vaccines will become available in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, continue to help slow the spread by adhering to the following precautions: ● Wear a mask in public. ● Observe social distancing practices. ● Wash your hands often. ● Treat others with kindness. We are all

figuring this out together.

o you remember the "The Love Boat?" It was a popular TV show in the late 70’s and 80s? My favorite character was Julie, the cruise director. I wanted to be her when I grew up. The TV series revolved around the crew and passengers onboard The Looove Boat and their romantic and funny adventures. An interesting fact, Mama Mia’s owner and Shore Local contributor, Joe Massaglia actually worked on the Pacific Princess cruise ship and met his beautiful wife, Christine there. Now that's a love story for the ages!

My parents also have an epic love story. From seventeen-year-olds in a roller-skating rink to now in their 80's, they are each other's best friend. They have been married 64 years now, with three children, ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter. What an example of enduring commitment, compassion, and kindness towards one another.

corner, romantic love is center stage this month. However, that is only one of many forms of love.

Love in its purest form can often be seen in families. You can see it in the eyes of a new mother or in the protectiveness of a dad. It is evident in the mom who waits up for her teen to get home safe or the one who anxiously waits for a call to know their son or daughter arrived at their destination safely when they take the wheel for the first time. It is there as our parents age and we are there for them, regardless of what was on the schedule.

One thing I learned about love is that it commands action. It is not an emotion wrapped in pretty words or something that magically happens to us as in fairytales. In Hollywood and romance novels, love is often portrayed as a feeling or a state of being to be lost or found. I believe instead it is the thousands of little words and actions that we take, acting on a decision to love or not to love. Those little things over time can create or

destroy that feeling. Love is in the smiles, phone calls, knowing looks and little, repetitive acts of kindness.

Love is active and intentional.

Love is also the icing on the cake.

It makes life better, more joyful. Human connection means so much. This year has been extraordinarily difficult for many because of the isolation felt from the pandemic. Whomever is in your "bubble," love them a little extra because this year has been tough on us all! If you know someone who is single or living alone, a phone call or video chat can mean a lot to them.

Whatever the love in your life looks like this Valentine’s Day, embrace it, celebrate it and act on it.

And there is plenty of optimism about the future of filmmaking in South Jersey. Last year, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy extended the state’s film tax credit program through 2028. Films that are shot in the southern half of the state can apply for 35% savings on their expenses, which is welcome news at Weist Barron Ryan. “For people that are now looking for a new career, this is the one to get into,” Ryan states.

What once started inside a small Atlantic City building has recently grown. Last March, prior to the state shutdown, the WBR team settled in their new location in Galloway. The building, just off of New York Avenue, includes two full-functioning studios, an audition room and voiceover booth. The office is equipped with the latest technology to handle remote casting calls and virtual sessions. With a staff of experienced, working actors and a family oriented approach, everyone is at the top of their game.

Upon walking the halls of Weist Barron Ryan in Galloway, the first thing people will notice along the walls are the many headshots. The faces that fill those walls represent the alumni that have taken workshops over the years. From the most wellknown actors to local businesspeople, politicians and paegeant contestants, Weist Barron Ryan is a name synonymous with South Jersey residents and national superstars alike.

Snowstorms to Remember

I

f you’re not a fan of the flakes, then you know all good things must come to an end. But if you’re a snow lover, your wait is over. Well, at least the wait for measurable snow, even if there wasn’t a whole lot to measure. Also over is our snowless streak. The third longest stretch with no measurable snow in South Jersey officially ended early last week at the Atlantic City International Airport(ACY), where records in South Jersey are kept, when 1” of snow fell on Sunday, January 31st. Head farther away from the shore, and a few more inches managed to fall. But snow totals in South Jersey from our multi-day coastal storm paled in comparison to what northern parts of the Garden State saw, where as much as 3 feet of snow buried northwestern parts of our meteorologically diverse state. So the streak may have “officially” ended, and we all saw another round of accumulating snow this past Sunday. But the suffering of South Jersey snow lovers still wanting a big one, or at least enough for sledding, a snowball fight, or even an old-fashioned snow day off from school, continues on.

We’ve entered the shortest month of the year, but historically, it is often the snowiest month in South Jersey. Sure enough, we have a cold and active pattern locked in across the Northeast through the

middle of the month. Some brutally cold arctic air has set up shop in the Midwest, and the core of that cold looks to thankfully stay away from the East Coast. But temperatures look to remain colder than average overall right through Presidents Day. Furthermore, a fast-moving pattern with multiple chances for storms of all sizes, minor, moderate, and major, should continue to provide rain, sleet, and snow opportunities for South Jersey over the next few weeks. But while that sounds promising, the cold and storm have to meet up at just the right time to break our big snow drought, something that is hard to do. After all, there’s a reason why our average annual snowfall in South Jersey is less than 20 inches of snow each winter. Things have to come together just right, and we often have to perfectly thread the needle, to make a sizable snow a reality. Without the right timing, it can simply be cold and dry and then when a storm comes, it warms up just enough for rain. 33 degrees and rain are pure torture for snow lovers.

But as alluded to earlier, things can and have come together just right in February to produce some of our most memorable snowstorms.

In the spirit of the Super Bowl last weekend, here are the contenders for the Super Bowl of February snowstorms and blizzards in South Jersey, starting with the most recent: ● February 5-6, 2010: This two-day blizzard buried South Jersey in as much as 2 feet of snow during Super Bowl weekend and was the second blizzard of the record setting winter of 2009-10. An unprecedented third followed the next December. The heavy, wet snow led to prolonged power

outages, especially in Cape May County. Officially, over 18” of snow was measured at ACY. February 15-17, 2003: This was the famous Presidents Day weekend storm, or should I say the second major storm to strike over a Presidents Day weekend (see more below). 2 feet totals were widespread throughout South Jersey, right down to the shore too, as a prolonged three-day storm took advantage of some arctic air that was in place. At the time, this was the most notable winter storm since the January blizzard of 1996.

February 18-19, 1979: This was the original Presidents Day weekend storm, which dropped a widespread 10 to 20 inches of snow across all of South Jersey.

But the jackpot of this storm was more centered towards Baltimore and Washington, which was where the 2 feet or more totals were more centralized. It did produce the greatest single day February snowfall record at ACY, with over 16” on February 19, 1979.

They've already met up twice this winter to our north to produce two impressive 30 to 40 inch snowstorms for the record books. Only time will tell if they meet up again, and farther south.

Creating a Great Charcuterie Board

I

love cheese. There, I said it, I meant it, and I'm not taking it back. There are 1,800 different types of cheese by some estimates, and I would like to try every one of them, from hard, semi-hard, soft, to semi-soft. From cow's milk to goat's milk to camel milk, cheese is as complex and alluring as it is delicious.

And given the rise of popularity of the charcuterie board, I don't think I'm alone.

Given how little effort making one takes and how impressive the outcome can be, the charcuterie board is a win no matter your reason for making one. They often involve a combination of flavors and diverse ingredients, making you seem maybe a little more kitchen capable than you are (no one needs to know!)

So whether you want to make an epic charcuterie board for your

Traditional Charcuterie ● Some of the most popular items on a traditional board are cured meats: pepperoni, salami, prosciutto (my personal favorite), chorizo, pate, ham, the list could go on and on. ● Another staple, the star of the show (in my eyes anyway) cheeses: It's always good to include various cheeses because of their myriad different flavor profiles and textures. My personal favorites are aged sharp cheddars, soft cheese like goat cheese or brie, fresh mozzarella balls, and Manchego (if you haven't had the pleasure of

tasting a Manchego, I highly recommend it. It's zesty, a little salty, and has a hard crumbly texture.

Charcuterie accouterments In my opinion, the meats and cheeses are the main events, and while they are great alone, it's the extras you include that bring the whole thing together. Think slices of bread, crackers, dried fruits, an assortment of nuts, dips, mustards, spreads (my favorite is hot pepper jelly), and honey.

Even on a traditional board, the possibilities are endless.

Let's also explore the unexpected and unique paths you could go. After all, It's 2021, all rules are pretty much out the window, so why not try something out of the box.

any people feel the best way to celebrate Valentine's Day is to enjoy an evening at home with the one they love. A quiet dinner followed by a romantic movie can make for a relaxing, memorable Valentine's Day. Romantic films pluck at the heartstrings and leave few dry eyes in the house. This genre has produced many unforgettable moments in film. While many people have their go-to romantic films, it can be fun to rethink those preferences and watch something new. The following are just some of the films dubbed 'the most romantic movies' by sources such as AMC, TimeOut magazine, Rotten Tomatoes, and Flavorwire. ● Beauty and the Beast (1991): This animated classic tells the tale of a prince who is disfigured into a beast to outwardly represent his internal ugliness. Only true love can break the spell, which seems

unlikely until the lovely Belle comes into the Beast's life. Fans of the animated film will have another opportunity to fall in love again with the live-action retelling of the story set for release. ● Say Anything (1989): In a tale of first love, Lloyd seeks to capture the heart of Diane, who is an unattainable high school beauty. The movie includes a now-famous pivotal scene when Lloyd holds up a boombox playing Peter Gabriel's 'In Your Eyes.' ● The Notebook (2004): Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel of the same name, this modern cult classic is set in 1940s South Carolina. The movie is the tale of a poor man who falls in love with a rich young woman, only

to be separated by their social differences. However, true love ultimately prevails in the end. ● When Harry Met Sally (1989): Close friends Harry and Sally have known each other for years and ponder if engaging in an intimate relationship would ruin the friendship. ● Gone With the Wind (1939): This sweeping epic is set in the antebellum south during the American Civil War. The story of Scarlett O'Hara's tangled love affairs has been popular with film fans for nearly 80 years. ● Sense and Sensibility (1995): This film is a dramatic interpretation of Jane Austen's novel published in 1811. Sudden financial struggles force the Dashwood sisters to move to a distant cottage. Locals develop romantic feelings for the ladies in this story that is considered an early example of the romantic novels of today. ● The Princess Bride (1987): Wesley and Buttercup begin with a

tumultuous servant-master relationship. But their love blooms only to have Wesley be called away, leaving Buttercup to believe he has died. The two ultimately reunite in this classic and often hilarious tale of romance. ● Casablanca (1943): A nightclub owner in Casablanca is reunited with his old flame, only to discover she is traveling with her husband. During World War II, Ilsa wants her rebel husband to escape to America, but her renewed feelings for Rick leave her struggling with what to do.

y wife and I, both retired, moved to Egg Harbor Township 10 years ago, to be near our daughter and grandchildren, an 11 year-old boy and 9 year-old twin girls. It was great being busy, always having something to do, going to school events, boardwalk rides, the beach, helping out with transportation to here, there, and everywhere.

Then, as they got older, things slowed down for us. We were called on less and less for transportation and events.

Started spending more time in front of the TV and on the sofa. Blood pressure creeping up, arthritis getting worse (among other reasons to just not do much). Doctors were on us to exercise and move more.

At some point, our daughter said, “You two need a dog!”

“No, no, not again,” I said.

Since we were married, back in 1958, we always had a dog.

We had outlived four dogs and didn’t want to go through the pain of losing another dog.

But our daughter, never one to take no for an answer, said “You have to come with me to see something great.” We went to the Pleasantville animal shelter and met Itty Bit, a 14-pound part-Westie. Our daughter said, “Mom, just hold her for a minute.”

She held her and I could see it was love at first sight, and I knew, right then, it was a done deal. We named her Itty Bit, because all our

other dogs were large. She was the perfect dog for us then, and now, five years later, even more so.

Itty Bit had a plan from the beginning. For the first two weeks, she

slept in a crate in the kitchen. Never had to put her in, just said go in and she went and, although she barked a lot during the day, she never barked at night. Then after two weeks I said, “Get in your crate,” but she went to the bedroom door and just looked at me. So I took her bed out of the crate and into the bedroom. About a month later, she put her paws up on the bed and again looked at me. She has been sleeping in our bed ever since.

The part where I believe she rescued us is that from her first day until now, five years later, we took her for a walk every day all year long, hardly ever missing a day. It helped our blood pressure and our arthritis, among other things. She keeps us laughing a lot, playing with her toys. And every time we come home, she makes us feel like the most important people on earth.

Our daughter was right, we needed our dog even more than our dog needed us.

Oranges for Optimal Health Nutrition

W

hen my dear friend Amy shops each week for her family she picks up a great big bag of delicious nutritious, vitamin packed oranges for her father, Frank.

Not only does Frank love oranges but it’s the fruit of choice for him.

When you think of the health benefits of oranges, the first thing that springs to mind is probably vitamin C. Citrus fruits are a terrific source, but oranges (with a medium-size orange coming in at about 62 calories) also provide a number of other protective nutrients. Oranges provide serious gut and health protective fiber! A medium orange offers about three grams of fiber, 12% of the daily target. The fiber in oranges supports digestive function, helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, boosts feelings of fullness, and can even contribute to healthy sleep.

Nearly two of the three grams of fiber in an orange are soluble fiber.

This type of fiber has been shown to help reduce blood cholesterol and fend off internal belly fat called visceral fat.

One study that tracked adults over five years found that for each 10-gram increase in soluble fiber consumed, the rate of visceral body fat accumulation decreased by 3.7%. That’s significant.

Carrying more visceral fat is linked to increased inflammation and a greater risk of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cancers.

Potassium and folate are two additional vital nutrients found in oranges.

Potassium supports heart function and muscle contractions, and it helps maintain muscle mass. This mineral also acts as a natural diuretic, to reduce blood pressure and counter fluid retention. Folate supports the brain and nervous system, and adequate amounts may help protect against depression and memory problems. Oranges also supply smaller amounts of calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, and B vitamins.

One orange packs about 80% of the daily goal for vitamin C. In addition to supporting immune function. This key nutrient helps produce collagen, reduce inflammation, and boost the body's ability to use fat as a fuel source, both during exercise and at rest. Too little blood vitamin C has also been tied to increased body fat and waist measurements. Vitamin C also helps boost the absorption of iron,

which can enhance oxygen availability and reduce fatigue. This is especially important for premenopausal women who lose iron through menstruation, and those who follow a plant-based diet, since iron is less readily absorbed from plant sources.

Vitamin C also acts as an aging-fighting antioxidant, and it's needed for DNA repair and serotonin production. The latter helps to promote happiness and sleep. Health-protective nutrients aren’t only found in oranges and orange juice; they’re also in the peel. Research shows that flavonoids in citrus peels may help prevent the reproduction, growth, and spread of cancer cells, as well as support apoptosis the self-destruct sequence the body uses to kill off dysfunctional cells.

Consuming enough vitamin C can help a person maintain skin health and appearance.

Soothe Your Cabin Fever by Winter Sowing

ho says you can’t garden in the winter? If cabin fever is making you climb the walls, “winter sowing” perennials, herbs, and vegetables outside now may help cure your winter woes.

Many gardeners get a head start on the growing season by planting seeds indoors, often using grow lights and heat mats. While this method is tried and true, it often requires a lot of space and time to maintain the controlled conditions. Seedlings then need a gradual introduction (called hardening off) to adjust to an outdoor environment once the weather warms.

But ”winter sowing” is a completely different method of germinating seeds. Instead of coaxing and coddling seeds indoors in a safe, controlled environment, winter sowers plant seeds in containers that are placed outdoors

Once your containers are planted, resealed, and labeled, leave outside to expose them to the freeze and thaw of winter. through the winter months, then let nature take over. With little cost or effort, the result will be hardy plants that have endured the elements and prevailed. When the weather warms, these strong seedlings will be ready to flourish in your garden.

Most winter sowers recycle gallon-sized milk and water jugs as their vessels of choice. But you can also use other clear or translucent containers like soda bottles or take out containers to create mini greenhouses of sorts. Shifting Perspective - It’s all in how you look at things

I

’ve spent this past week in Florida. I know what you are thinking. Poor Jeff. I’m not bragging that I was in the Sunshine State while most of you reading this were in the land of freezing rain, snow and frigid temps. But it does make you realize something. Perspective matters. In fact, perspective is everything.

While the Northeast (and much of the rest of the country for that matter) was experiencing frigid and in many cases sub-zero weather conditions, in Florida it was colder than normal as well much of the time. The only difference is that frigid to Floridians and frigid to most everyone else is totally different. It’s all in your perspective. Several days, we awoke to temperatures in the low 40’s. I have to admit that most days it did climb to the 70’s as the day progressed. But here is the thing. It was “cold” in the morning until I checked back home. Then I realized the day I had ahead of us didn’t seem all that bad. It’s all in your perspective.

Here is my point. How we see things based on our current situation or our location or circumstance has a huge impact on how we view things. It’s all about mindset. If you and I get up in the morning and anticipate doom and gloom based on the circumstances around us or the situation we find ourselves in or for that matter even the weather, we set ourselves up for negativity at every turn. On the contrary, if we don’t allow ourselves to have our attitudes or perspectives impacted by our circumstanc-

es, we set a whole different tone for the day.

So, what do we need to do to feed the positive and starve the negative influences in our lives? It starts with pursuing a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset looks at the situation we find in front of us, buying into the negativity and accompanying mentality that it brings with it. Whereas having a growth mindset looks at every situation and scenario as an opportunity to learn, grow and look for the positive.

This past year has presented plenty of opportunities in just about every area of life to wake up each day and fall right into the trap of a fixed mindset. Things are never going to change. COVID has ruined everything. Things will never be the same again. Thinking positive is pointless. But that’s not the case. Not if we change our perspective.

Carol S. Dweck said, “When there's a setback, someone with a fixed mindset will start thinking, 'Maybe I don't have what it takes?'

They may get defensive and give up. A hallmark of a successful person is that they persist in the face of obstacle, and often, these obstacles are blessings in disguise.”

The next time you become overwhelmed by your situation or the circumstances that surround you, check your perspective and consider a mindset adjustment. You might be pleasantly surprised at the difference it will make in your day and the days to come.

“Weathering” Winter Weather Safely Views from the Shore

pretty snowfall blanketing everything in sight when looking out the window is picture perfect. When you are digging out your car from an overnight snowstorm, however, it may put a whole new spin on how you view that winter weather.

Urgent Care versus Emergency Department Dr. John Kulin, director of Shore Urgent Care in Northfield, said winter weather definitely brings in more patients with fractures, sprains and contusions associated with slips and falls on the ice and snow. X-rays are available on-site at Shore Urgent Care.

“Patients with more significant injuries such as head injuries, major trauma or extremity injuries with significant deformity should go to the Emergency Department. Otherwise, urgent care is the best place for most,” said Dr. Kulin.

Be Prepared The most important things you should do to stay safe during the winter months is be prepared and use common sense. Dr. Kulin suggested having food and water available should there be a power outage and have contact information at hand with a plan of where to go if you should lose power and heat. Make arrangements for snow removal prior to a storm. Have heating equipment properly maintained annually and do not go out in a storm or immediately after unless it is absolutely necessary.

Weekend Warriors Saturday and Sunday hours at Shore Urgent Care do see an increase of patients who have hit the slopes on their skis and snowboards and then return home, seeking care closer to home, according to Dr. Kulin.

Broken fingers and wrists can be taken care of in the office if the deformity from the break is not too severe.

Dr. Kulin said, “We X-ray to rule out a break and then go with the normal resting, elevating and icing the affected area.

Typically, these patients will be examined and an X-ray ordered to rule out a fracture or break. Depending on the extent of the injury, it may require anti-inflamatories or splinting, immobilization and crutches along with follow-up with their primary care provider or a specialist to assess proper healing.”

Be Wary of Chest Pains and Shortness of Breath In the winter months, Shore Urgent Care does experience an uptick in patients with complaints of chest pains and shortness

of breath. “Chest pains and shortness of breath are common complaints in the urgent care setting and among the most difficult to deal with,” said Dr. Kulin. “There are many causes for chest pain or shortness of breath, some minor and some life threatening. The patient’s past medical history is a good indicator. If a patient has a history of asthma but has run out of their inhaler, this is a safe and easy visit to the urgent care.

On the other hand, when a person is having chest pain, heaviness or shortness of breath after exertion, it is very concerning for a serious heart related issue.”

Dr. Kulin explained that most new onset chest pain or shortness of breath without definite cause is problematic. Chest pain or shortness of breath after exertion should be evaluated in the emergency department, according to Dr. Kulin who added that patient’s safety is always paramount.

“Shoveling snow is a labor-intensive activity, especially heavy and wet snow. But if you cannot get someone to shovel for you, then work slowly and deliberately, tackling the job in small increments. Do NOT ‘work up a sweat’ or try to elevate your heart rate. If you develop any shortness of breath, chest heaviness, tightness or pain especially if it radiates to the back, neck or arms, stop immediately and call 911,” said Dr. Kulin.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Winter weather also means the heater and the fireplace will likely be in use. Dr. Kulin said typically they will see patients at Shore Urgent Care who are complaining of headache or nausea that are not related to any cold or flu but related to improper ventilation or a blocked chimney or heating duct. “Everyone needs to remember that carbon monoxide monitors should be used if you have any type of combustible heat such as oil, gas- especially non-vented, kerosene or wood. Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless, and colorless.” He said common causes of carbon monoxide poisoning include: malfunctioning cooking appliances, clogged chimney, auto exhaust or idling vehicles, or malfunctioning oil, wood, gas or coal furnaces. Likewise, it could result from a malfunctioning clothes dryer, wood burning fireplace, gas log burner or any unvented space heater, gas or fuel burning appliances in cabins or campers, barbecue grills, ceiling mounted heating units, and pool or spa heaters.

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in your bloodstream. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, your body replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can lead to serious tissue damage, or even death. A simple plug-in carbon monoxide monitor will detect the

presence of carbon monoxide build-up.

Automobiles in the Mid-Fifties A Look Back at Ocean City

ixty-five years ago this month was an exciting time at the ten Ocean City automobile dealerships. It was the new model introduction season and people from all over South Jersey flocked to Ocean City showrooms to check out the new and improved automobiles.

The new car advertisements were loaded with pictures showing how different the 1956 automobiles were compared to the previous year. It was hoped the car buyers would feel dissatisfied with their old car and head to the auto showrooms to buy a new one. The beautiful advertisements in the local newspapers reveal creative copy.

Black History Education Beyond The Classroom Mom's Vibe

lack History is American History. While we are one week into Black History Month, we are to be reminded that the richness of Black History needs to be told 365 days of the year. In this edition of Mom’s Vibe, we wanted to offer insight and resources for teaching Black History education in our homes. We sat down with three Black mothers who graciously offered their perspectives on Black History education.

Shore Local: What do you feel are the most important factors to capture when teaching black history to children?

Glorist Moore: I feel that the most important factors that need to be captured are the richness of the culture and traditions of Blacks beginning in Africa when we were Kings and Queens and also the many contributions of Blacks to America and its development and growth.

needs to go beyond the same 3-5 famous figures. Most kids know about Martin Luther King Jr. but not Malcolm X, Rosa Parks but not Shirley Chislom, Harriet Tubman but not Maya Angelou.

Schools need to design a curriculum that ensures that children are developing a deeper understanding of the American Black Experience every year that builds on previous knowledge. If they only learn a few historical figures then they get the impression that very few Black Americans were worthy of acknowledgment.

Yellow Diamonds for Valentine’s Day

ove is always in the air for Italians, but even more so at Valentine’s Day, which in Italy also is known as La Festa Degli Innamorati.

One legend has it that Valentine's Day actually originated during the Roman Empire as a holiday on February 14 to celebrate Juno, the Queen of Roman gods and goddesses and also the goddess Queen of Women and Marriage Another legend refers to St. Valentine, a priest, or some believe a bishop, who defied the Roman emperor’s orders banning converting people to Christianity and secretly marrying lovers during wartime, which was against the law. He’s also believed to have sent cut-out paper hearts or notes to either a jailer’s or a judge’s daughter that he reportedly cured of blindness, signing the hearts simply “Valentine.”

And since 496 A.D., February 14 has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (Saint Valentine's Day).

Speaking of love, many couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day, and the ring usually contains a diamond. Ant hrop ologis t s believe this tradition originated from a Roman custom in which wives wore rings attached to small keys, indicating their husbands' ownership.

So, in one way or another, we have to thank the Romans for this holiday dedicated to love.

This Valentine’s Day I’d like to tell you about a sweet diamond recipe from the Veneto region of Italy.

Called Yellow Diamonds, these delicious, lemony cookies made with cornmeal, golden raisins, lemon zest and pine nuts will be a delightful taste break from all the chocolate desserts and candy you will be tasting.

This recipe is one of 600 authen-

tic recipes on my website (www. joestablefortwo.com). It is from the Italian Regional Cooking cookbook by famous Italian cookbook author Ada Boni. (The recipe has been tested and minor updates made for today’s cook.)

As a side note, lemons started being cultivated in Genoa in the middle of the 15th century.

In fact, it’s said that the best lemons come from the Amalfi Coast, although the Sicilians would take issue with that. Italians use lemons in both sweet and savory foods, and since cornmeal also is popular (think polenta) it’s only natural the two would come together in this recipe.

Appetito! ● Buon 2 cups all-purpose flour ● 1-1/2 cups fine cornmeal ● 3/4 cup golden raisins ● 2/3 cup rum ● 3 large egg yolks ● 3/4 cup granulated sugar ● 2 teaspoons vanilla ● 1 cup butter, melted and cooled slightly ● Pinch of salt ● Grated zest of 1 lemon ● 1/3 cup pine nuts ● Confectioners’ sugar for dusting Heat oven to 375 °F. Sift flour and cornmeal together into a bowl; set aside. Soak the raisins in the rum until swollen, about 20 to 30 minutes.; drain and pat dry. (Note from Joe: Don’t throw away the rum. Sip on it while making the cookies!)

Using a mixer, beat the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla together until smooth, thick and lemon colored (about 1 minute). Gradually add the melted butter, flour mixture, salt and lemon zest. Mix or knead until you get a smooth dough; knead in the raisins and pine nuts.

On a lightly floured surface roll dough to about a 1/2-inch thickness and cut into small diamond shapes. (A cookie cutter works well too.)

Place on greased or parchment-lined cookie sheets and bake about 12 to 13 minutes or until golden, reversing sheets halfway through. Cool on cookie sheets about 5 minutes before removing to wire racks. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve warm or at room temperature.

About 5 dozen 2-inch cookies.

I feel the accomplishments in science, math, medicine, and politics are not celebrated enough.

"The Firsts" by African Americans are still happening due to systematic and institutional racism, yet they are not a major headline or a story. The important factors to note are the heroes and trailblazers past and present. It is not enough to just teach a Dr. King speech and celebrate Rosa Parks' courage. Our youth should know about the lives, struggles, and accomplishments of Sadie T.M. Alexander, Dorothy Height, Shirley Chisholm, Ida B. Wells, Charles Drew, Garrett Morgan, James Baldwin, and W.E.B. Dubois to say the least, and not just when a movie is created about them.

id you watch the Super Bowl? I’m writing this as reports are coming out that “only” 96.4 million viewers watched Super Bowl LV on CBS. That’s down from the roughly 102 million that watched the previous year, and there are a variety of reasons why people think the numbers are down.

Some think the matchup of Tom Brady and his Bucs vs. Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs only appealed to Tampa, KC, and apparently Boston. Others think because a lot of the major advertisers held off, that led to lower ratings.

Did you know that the 1982 game remains the highest-rated Super Bowl broadcast ever with a 49.1 household rating? Also, Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 was the most watched ever, with over 114.4 million people.

Hey, if even ONE million people read this column, I bet the folks at SHORE LOCAL would hire me for LIFE…!!!

Down to business now, as since I last wrote, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have

won the Super Bowl, cementing Tom Brady’s legacy as the GOAT. The Eagles appear to be on the verge of trading away their once-franchise QB Carson Wentz. The Sixers are off to a 17-7 start to the season. As of this writing, that’s the best in the Eastern Conference and there’s no question that the head coach has something to do with that.

The Flyers are in the news as COVID-19 is starting to influence their schedule and their roster. Finally, the Phillies load up the equipment truck and head for Clearwater. Plus, they keep adding arms

From the entertainment world, which Super Bowl ads did you like? Or dislike? Also, did you happen to catch the first official trailer for the new M. Night Shyamalan movie? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Let’s begin with the Super Bowl as I thought the game was a dud.

All that hype about Tom Brady & Patrick Mahomes, and it turned out to be a 31-9 Tampa win. The Chiefs could only manage three field goals, and there were zero points scored in the entire fourth quarter! That said, if you like defense, you had to respect what the Bucs did. Also, I thought Mahomes was incredible for his ability to extend plays and do everything he could to will KC to a victory. Remember, two of his passes hit the receiver in the face in the end-zone and were dropped! ● I was happy to see Tampa win for several reasons, but the most prominent was the sheer number of former Temple Owls that are with the Bucs. Head coach Bruce Arians coached and worked on

In fact, there were a whopping EIGHT coaches on Tampa’s staff that would make them qualify for Temple “South”. Hat tip to Assistant Defensive Line coach Lori Locust as she was one of TWO women on Tampa’s staff to win a Super Bowl.

My last item on the Super Bowl is about the broadcast of the game.

There were reportedly 120 cameras in use by CBS for the big game, and yet NONE of them managed to show us the shot of Bruce Arians getting drenched with Gatorade? C’mon CBS, that’s a violation on your part!

In my house, we bet on what color the liquid is, and had to go to social media to find out the answer. (Blue). I bet Red, but for the record, the most popular color over the years has been orange, so if you’re betting this one down the road, go with Orange!

Now to the Philadelphia Eagles, as word began to trickle out just prior to the Super Bowl that the Birds would listen to trade offers for Carson Wentz and a move was expected soon. Wait…what…??? Let me get this straight. The Eagles go 4-11-1, fire Doug Pederson, and Wentz STILL wants out…? Man, oh man, he could go down as one of the biggest villains in Philadelphia sports history!

Let’s see what happens between my writing this column and the next one.

Okay, enough football for now, let’s move on to basketball where the Sixers are off to a 17-7 to the start to the NBA season. That’s tops in the Eastern Conference and I am in the camp that there are TWO big reasons for that record. One, is Joel Embiid. The big fella has rededicated himself to basketball and simply is playing like an MVP. The second big reason they are so good, is the arrival of Doc Rivers as head coach. Hey, I was probably one of the biggest Brett Brown fans out there. I still am.

But there’s no question the Sixers close out games better and play better as a team under Rivers so far.

In hockey, I think I’ve made my passion for the puck pretty clear. So, color me disappointed that the Flyers season has to be put on hold for a few games because of COVID-19 protocols. The latest, as of this

writing, is that the Flyers-Capitals game on 2-9-21 is postponed. Defenseman Travis Sanheim was put on the COVID-19 protocol list on Super Bowl Sunday after practicing fully with the team the day before.

Remember, being placed on the protocol list doesn’t automatically mean a positive test. Another Flyer was then added to the list on Tuesday, forcing the postponement. The Flyers (8-3-2) already had games on Thursday and Saturday against visiting New Jersey wiped out because of an outbreak among Devils players.

Same thing for Washington, which was to play Buffalo on Thursday and Saturday, as well. Stay tuned for this developing story as the NHL scrambles to keep the games and the season going.

Wow, talk about timing, just as I’m writing about hockey, I get a text message that Ron Hextall is the new GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

I mean, I have mixed reactions to this. I’m happy for Hexy that he gets another shot to be a GM in the NHL, but of all the teams he could go to, it’s the arch-rival Penguins? Ugh. Pittsburgh is 5-5-1 as of the writing of this column, but with Hextall on board, and 65-year-old Brian Burke assuming the new President of Hockey Operations role, I begrudgingly have to admit the Penguins

To baseball next, as normally I’d be able to write with 100% certainty when Phillies pitchers & catchers are going to report to Spring Training in Clearwater, Florida. This year, all I see is TBA up and down the list as teams still haven’t pinned down exact start dates for the Grapefruit League or Cactus League. Locally, I have had the privilege to attend two area high school basketball games during this winter sports season. But, full disclosure, I was only able to do so because I kept the scorebook for both of those games.

Fans are not allowed inside the gym yet, and I know that’s frustrating a lot of local parents, families and loved ones. My recommendation is to find out if your school or team is live-streaming the games, and tune in there. Hey, it’s not ideal, but at least it’s something!

My last sports item is about Coach John Chaney. I’m a Temple University alum, and I began school there in the Fall of 1989. Just two years before that, the basketball team went 32-2 and was the #1 team in the country for a period of time. I spent all four of my years at Temple covering Coach for both The Temple News as well as WRTI-FM radio.

Now, I never woke up early enough to attend one of his 5:30 a.m. practices, but I sure do treasure all the times and interaction I had with the man. Coach Chaney passed away at the age of 89 on Friday January 29th. “Winning is an Attitude” he famously once said. R.I.P. Coach.

Thanks for all the great memories and interactions we had.

I’ll close with entertainment and for me, that means all the Super Bowl ads. Which ones did you like? Which ones did you dislike? Can anyone tell me why it looked like the people on the field for the halftime show were wearing jock straps on their heads?

I liked the Cadillac commercial that updated the 1990 movie “Edward Scissorhands”. They enlisted “Call Me By Your Name” actor Timothée Chalamet to portray Edward Scissorhand’s son Edgar, enjoying the Cadillac Lyriq’s hands-free “Super Cruise” technology. Winona Ryder revisited her role in the classic 1990 movie as his mother.

John Chaney 1932-2021 You can put me down for enjoying Dan Levy in the M&M’s commercial and I even chuckled at Amazon’s Alexa ad featuring actor Michael B. Jordan. Now, I love Bruce Springsteen, but c’mon Bruce, what was that Jeep commercial all about?

I honestly thought his ad about “meeting in the middle” was a political spot until the Jeep logo appeared on the screen. ● My favorite commercial was the one I wrote about last column. My niece Connie was in the :15 second spot for Mercari. She was the girl on the couch with her dog in her lap. I’m still thrilled for her! ● In the first commercial break once they actually kicked off the game, there was a trailer for the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan movie “OLD”.

Based on the graphic novel “Sandcastle”, the story looks good as it’s a psychological thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly … reducing their entire lives into a single day. My favorite part about this plot and this movie is that, for now, they’re saying “ONLY IN THEATERS”. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 23rd by Universal Pictures. Here’s hoping I’ll be at Tilton Square Theater in Northfield on opening night with my popcorn!

Which leads me to a reminder to keep wearing those masks and stay socially distant please! Vaccines are now being given out in New Jersey with more people getting vaccinated every day. I’ve signed up at covid19.nj.gov and urge you to do the same. Hopefully “normal” is coming soon in 2021! ●

he 50’s are real years for change and I’m getting closer and closer to that number. It’s so important to take a proactive approach to aging. Strength training is the key factor for an active aging process. You need it to engage in all the physical activities that you love. When you keep strength and stamina in your body, there are no limits. Being strong, fit and flexible is very empowering and gives you great confidence.

Also, as we approach middle age, strength training keeps you lean by building muscle and lean body mass burns calories at a much higher metabolic rate when at rest. The goal for middle age is to maintain bone mass and bone density to ward off osteoporosis in your later years. Another huge benefit to weight training is balance and stability. Improved coordination will prevent falls and injuries as we age. Balance training such as standing on one leg or using a stability ball are great tools to keep us healthy and free from injury. Strengthening the leg muscles and the core keeps us functional and independent. We never want to lose our independence or the ability to perform our daily living activities.

By age 50, your body composition changes and strength training is imperative. Most people don't realize that strength training will in fact make you a better runner, cyclist, swimmer, skier, tennis player, etc.. You will develop more

power by strengthening your muscles.

You’ll never get stronger by doing the same repetitive movement over and over. Use me as a prime example. I started teaching indoor cycling (spin) almost thirteen years ago but it wasn’t until I started weight training that I really saw definition in my legs. Recently, someone asked how to get quadriceps like mine?

I explained it’s not a one size fits all. It’s a combination of various forms of exercise such as Spinning, squats, lunges, leg presses, etc.. It’s not one ingredient, it’s a recipe.

If you’re new to exercise or have been on an exercise hiatus, I would highly recommend a walking program but be sure to add exercise with weights for the upper body since walking is weight bearing on the hips and legs but leaves the rest of your body undeveloped. A few sets of 10-12 repetitions of bicep curls, lateral raises and tricep kickbacks is a great way to start.

We’ve all heard the term,”cross training” and I’m a firm believer in its effectiveness. You must keep your muscles alert and constantly guessing to yield results. Involving several different forms of exercise enhances overall health and prevents an overuse injury. If you enjoy swimming, water aerobics, and cycling that’s fantastic but these are weight supported exercises so you’ll need to add some weight bearing exercises to your fitness menu to create a well rounded exercise program. This will enable us to fully embrace life at every stage!

am offended. I do not know quite why yet but I’ll think of something. Everyone seems to be offended by something today and I do not want to be left out.

Newly added to the top of my “most egregiously offended” is the group known as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.)

I love animals and even find some of them quite delicious if they are seasoned well but PETA recently put out a message for us to stop using animal words as “slurs.” This activist group claimed that animal-related insults “degrade animals by applying negative human traits to certain species.” We humans apply negative human traits to our own species as common practice but apparently PETA is less concerned.

The message goes on to say, “calling someone an animal as an insult, (chicken, rat) reinforces the myth that humans are superior to other animals and justified in violating them.”

The myth that humans are superior. In some cases, I must agree. I believe my dog was superior to some humans I know. It is alarming enough to think that some people engage in this thought process but to then put it out in the mainstream speaks volumes as to where we are right now. I could just see it now, somewhere in a Perdue facility a group of chickens are gathered together clucking “Did you hear what he said? I am so offended. We have to put a stop to this” before they are slaughtered, sauteed in butter and lemon and gently placed

on a bed of Basmati rice.

PETA is also encouraging people to substitute snitch for rat, jerk for snake, repulsive for pig and lazy for sloth. Their claim is “snakes are clever, have family relationships and prefer to associate with their relatives.” I must admit, snakes have the edge on me in that regard.

They hold pigs in similar high regard. I do as well but rather in the form of bacon. PETA has lost all connection with insults. Somehow calling someone a “poopyhead” doesn’t carry the same cachet of a well-crafted insult. Sure, I could call someone a jackass, vulture, porker, mongrel, cur, shrew, louse, jackal or buzzard without worrying about hurting any of these animals’ feelings even if they were in earshot and I doubt if they feel violated in any way.

Throwing red paint on someone wearing a fur coat? Now, that is a violation they are okay with.

When I Googled “insults” I was impressed with the creativity and thought that went into many of them and I realized that I have to up my game if I am going get some traction in this much maligned milieu.

So, trust me, if your behavior is such that it elicits an insult or offensive comment from me; number one, it is well deserved and number two, a great deal of thought went into it. We are in the age of such hypocrisies and double standards which are leaching into the very essence of our lives and I will defend my right to insult or offend, when warranted to my last breath…no monkeying around.
