Weathering 2020: The Year in Review Weather

020 has certainly been a year like no other, one that many of us would like to forget. But weather-wise, at least in many respects, South Jersey was rather fortunate. Those that dislike those six-sided ice crystals that normally fall during the winter months were probably most fortunate, as snow was a rare commodity through the first 49 weeks of 2020. Conversely, hurricanes were of course all too abundant throughout the Atlantic basin this summer and fall.

But that was not so much the case along the East Coast, as the Gulf of Mexico was the focal point for both the most and the strongest storms this season. The summer was very warm, as was much of the year with the exception of the early to mid-spring. And ocean temperatures off of our coast were consistently warm throughout

the summer for enjoyment of locals and tourists alike. But the year was not without its highlights. So here's a look at five of the more significant weather headlines of the year, in no particular order.

1.) It's the year of the snow lover's discontent. Can you remember the last time it snowed? It sure seems like forever. The last measurable snow in South Jersey was way back on December 11, 2019, when 0.5" of snow fell at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY). The winter of 2019-2020 was the second least snowy on record at ACY, with just that half of an inch of snow falling last season. And technically, we have not seen measurable snow yet in 2020, with just over a half month to go. We've never recorded an entire calendar year without snow , so if we don't see measurable snow before the ball drops on New Year's Eve, 2020 can lay claim to that first. Currently, 1973 holds the record for the least snowy year on record, with just 0.5" of snow that year.

2.) Hurricane Isaias made landfall in North Carolina on August 4th, and then weakened to a tropical storm as it zipped up the coast to our west later that day. While the flooding remnant rains largely stayed to our west, strong

winds gusting over 70 miles-per-hour roared through South Jersey that day.

Most notably, Isaias spawned two tornadoes, one in Cape May County and another in Ocean County, which produced 80 to 110 mile-per-hour winds respectively.

3.) A strong cold front on April 13, the Monday after Easter, swept through South Jersey and caused strong and damaging winds and an unusually early severe weather event across the area.

Tornado watches were posted, and while no tornadoes were confirmed, 70 to 80 mile-per-hour gusts caused extensive damage throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties. A roof was ripped off a Somers Point marina, and there was roof damage to Congress Hall in Cape May as well as parts of the Wildwood Boardwalk.

4.) 2020 was a year of a fairly sizable and notable drought across much of the Northeast. But rainfall shortages were never really an issue in South Jersey, especially through the summer and fall. July through November all featured above average rainfall, to the tune of 2 to 6 inches above average each month.

All in all, 2020 should go down as a Top 5 wettest year on record.

5.) Weather in one word this year: warm. In addition to being a Top 5 wet

year, 2020 will likely be a Top 5 warm year on record as well. Just where it will rank in the Top 5 will be determined by just what our temperatures do over the coming few weeks before the new year.

It's worth noting that all other spots in not only the Top 5 but also the Top 8 warmest years on record have been since 2010. Yes, it's certainly been a warm decade or so.

Late Decembers of the past brought us some notable storms, including back-to-back blizzards on either side of Christmas in 2009 and 2010. So there's a chance that a last-minute event could be a candidate for the Top 5 weather events of the year. Time will tell, but no matter what happens, here's to a better 2021!

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

When it's not the 'most wonderful' time of the year Facing the holidays amongst loss and hardships

"I

t's the most wonderful time of the year," the radio plays as I'm driving down my road. How could it not be? With twinkling lights on the houses and trees, gifts, and traditions, it's a month-long celebration of faith, family and hope. I love Christmas! This is usually the time of year I look forward to with great anticipation.

Like every year on the day after Thanksgiving, I began unpacking the boxes filled with lights and treasures from Christmas' past. Initially it's chaos, with boxes and tangled strings of lights all over. But slowly the lights and stockings were hung, and it was beginning to look just right. Yet, I felt something missing. More lights and wreaths perhaps? So, last week I got Issue 147 148

more decorations. Wreaths and lights were now everywhere. I outlined every window in the house with lights and added ribbons to the window wreaths. But still, nothing felt right.

I kept going until my home was beginning to resemble Chevy Chases's house in the holiday movie, Christmas Vacation. I slowly began to realize; I could not fill a hole in my heart with Christmas decorations.

Like many this year, we lost loved ones, our son and my brother. No amount of Christmas lights can fill that void. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, financial struggles or mental health issues, sometimes the Christmas season is NOT the most wonderful time of the year. The holidays can add to the sadness. The pressure of knowing you should be happy or that others are happy, adds another layer to the sadness.

So how can you celebrate the holidays amongst loss or troubling times? Here are some things that are helping me.

Change your expectations.

of our holiday celebration. How can we incorporate our love and fond memories of him? We decided to each write a letter to him and place it in his stocking.

Let your perfectionism go. Maybe it is because I watch the Hallmark channel too much, but I struggle with this one. I have a vision in my head about what the holidays "should" look like. I need to remind myself that the tree can be lopsided, the gifts can be small and not wrapped like a work of art, and the cookies might get burnt.

It's okay, because that’s real life. What truly matters at the end of the day are the relationships, not the presentation of food or decorations.

Ignore or unfollow the people who want to tell you what you “should” do for the holidays or are constantly showing you how perfectly they do it. Remember, social media is nothing more than a highlight reel. The people behind it do not show the messy parts of their life, but trust me, they are there. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and stay away. Unfollow them or better yet, take a break from social media altogether. Communicate with

your family, and only do what works for you.

Seek gratitude. I know this is tough because it is 2020 so what could there be to be grateful for? Still, there is ALWAYS something. Try to find one daily gratitude throughout the holiday season. Write it down, photograph it and share it with others. It may lift them up, too. Look for the little things; a hot cup of tea, a warm home, a sweet pet, a friendly neighbor, a good meal, anything.

Lean into your faith and take care of your body through exercise or yoga. Take a walk outside. Carve out a small chunk of time every day for yourself. Self-care is not selfish. You cannot show up for others until you show up for yourself. It took me way too many years to acknowledge that.

If the holidays are hard for you this year, I am with you. I understand and I pray that 2021 will be a better year for all of us. Someday (hopefully soon), we will look back on this year and realize that we made it through. And we’ll be stronger and wiser because of it.

A Spectacular Vintner Wonderland

A

towering lit Christmas tree constructed with over 75 stacked, authentic wine barrels is the focal point of Renault Winery's Vintner Wonderland. It is what first grabs your eye and makes you realize you are entering something extraordinary!

South Jersey has never seen anything like this. Vintner Wonderland at Renault is a winter dreamland where you can skate, shop, wine, dine and and a whole lot more. Best of all, it is outdoors, following Covid-19 safety protocols, even offering enclosed private igloos to dine in.

If the pandemic stole the holiday spirit, Vintner Wonderland has brought it back. With an ice-skating rink, horse and carriage rides, live music, fire pits surrounded by rocking chairs, bon fires, wine tasting and hot beverages that warm your bones and spirit, the

magic of the season is in the air.

"It was designed to be similar to a European Winter Festival," explained Josh McCallen, President of Renault Properties LLC and Executive with Vivamee Hospitality. "A 'vintner' is a winemaker. That's why we call it 'Vintner Wonderland.' The hot or mulled wine warms your fingers, then your belly and heart. And because it is wine, it also helps you to feel jovial for the season."

McCallen had lived in Austria and he describes similar scenes of winter delight there and throughout Europe.

McCallen, along with his wife, Melanie

and their ten children are often at Vintner Wonderland working behind the scenes and assisting in multiple ways.

"When we purchased Renault in December of 2018, it was a national treasure with much tarnish on it," said McCallen. " Vivamee literally means reviving the soul and that is what we are doing with this 156 year old French Countryside Winery. We have

kept every artifact and every piece of history during its restoration." That also includes the French pronunciation of Renault where the t is silent. ('Re-know') "Vintner Wonderland was part of the vision McCallen had for the "Four seasons of Renault," but when Covid-19 regulations tightened up, it was expedited to create a safe and festive atmosphere where people could enjoy the holidays and winter season safely," explained Jon Schaffer, an event coordinator who played a key role in bringing McCallen's vision to fruition. When asked about events for the upcoming seasons, Schaffer said only that exciting things are in the works.

I

t's been quite a while since I’ve shared my thoughts in this space. Not unlike many of you, somewhere back in March I got distracted by a lot of things that took me in directions I hadn’t planned. Can you relate? One thing led to another and I asked to take a break from contributing.

Now I’m back, and hopefully sharing with you consistently once again.

As I look back on this crazy 2020, it’s still hard to believe where we were this time last year. We had no idea what was headed our way. I’m sure you agree that the new year can’t come soon enough.

As we all look ahead with anticipation of turning the page on 2020, it’s also important that we look back and learn from what we’ve all experienced.

There are a lot of lessons I can pull out of this year. The biggest lesson I’ve gotten out of 2020 personally is that there are many things we can’t control and we should stop trying. However, there are many things we can control and that is where our energy and focus should lie.

We’ve all heard that experience is the best teacher, and we’ve all experienced enough in 2020 to last a lifetime. However, my mentor John Maxwell says that experience is not necessarily the best

teacher. It’s only when we evaluate our experiences, judging what worked and what didn't, that we learn from them.

People can experience all kinds of things and not learn a thing. I’m sure that like me, you’ve asked yourself many times this past year “Why did I do that again?

What was I thinking?” It’s fine to ask these questions, but it shouldn’t stop there. There has to be an evaluation of it as well.

So, as 2020 draws to a close, I suggest you take some time over the next couple of weeks to look back on this year. It might help if you pull out a piece of paper and write down the major and not-so-major events of this year along with the decisions you’ve made. Then be honest and ask yourself what worked and what hasn’t. What can you do the same and what can you do differently in 2021?

When you do this, it will give you a baseline to evaluate what needs to change or what direction you need to head in if you want to see personal or professional growth in the new year. Reflection can be a powerful part of setting you on the right track for the future. Let’s do this together and reap the benefits in the new year ahead.

Celebrating Hanukkah for the First Time with Food

ast year I celebrated Christmas for the first time. My boyfriend’s family invited me to the main event, Christmas morning. I have to say that it was exactly like what I’ve seen on TV. An idyllic decorated tree with presents perfectly piled underneath, stockings (even one with my name on it), an abundance of cookies, and a lot of laughing smiling and present opening. I felt like I was in a movie. I wondered how I could make Hanukkah something special that my boyfriend could really get into and excited about.

This year, in addition to marking my second Christmas, my boyfriend will celebrate his first Hanukkah, join a handful of my family members as we exchange presents, have dreidel spin-offs, light the menorah, and make latkes.

So, how do you get an Irish, Christmas celebrating guy to embrace all things Hanukkah? One word: potatoes.

Even though my Christmas lovin’ guy and I haven’t ever truly celebrated the holiday together, I have made him latkes in the past. However, if anyone

reading this has ever made latkes, you know it’s a long and tiring process. The most tedious part is peeling and grating the potatoes. Being the youngest, this usually ends up being my job, leaving me sitting next to what always seems to be an oversized army sack of potatoes, peeling away.

But it doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve peeled the almost comical amount of potatoes, you then have to grate them.

And don’t even think about using an electric food processor, the texture is never right, and we can always tell the difference.

The first time I made them for him, he ate at least 10. He loved them so much he vowed to be the resident peeler and grater from that day forward. That’s the Hanukkah present that keeps on giving!

Latkes are one of the most iconic Hanukkah foods, and for a good reason, two words: Fried Potatoes.

And here’s a life hack that took my family almost 60 years to figure out: to avoid your house (hair, clothes, pets) smelling like a snack after a long night of latke making, make them outside!

When we first attempted this, they said it couldn’t be done. They said it wasn’t possible, but with our electric

Working quickly, transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Add the eggs, flour, salt, baking powder, pepper, and mix until the flour is absorbed.

In a medium heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat, pour in about 1/4 inch of the oil. Once the oil is hot (a drop of batter placed in the pan should sizzle), use a heaping tablespoon to drop the batter into the hot pan, cooking in batches. Use a spatula to flatten and shape the drops into discs. When the edges of the latkes are brown and crispy, about 5 minutes, flip. Cook until the second side is deeply browned, about another 5 minutes. Transfer the latkes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and sprinkle with salt while still warm. Repeat with the remaining batter.

Transfer the mixture to a clean dish towel and squeeze and wring out as much of the liquid as possible.

Holiday Light Show on the Lake ▶Thursday-Sunday

from 5:308:30pm Historic Smithville 615 E. Moss Mill Rd. Christmas Trees made from over 50,000 Christmas lights magically float over Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. The moment darkness falls, an orchestrated show of lights and music is played out across the lake. The lights dance and chase each other to the music all the while reflecting of the water’s surface. The show can be seen from either side of the village as well as the bridge. The show runs in loops of about 30 minutes, so anytime you arrive from 5:30-8:30, you will be able to catch the entire show.

December 11th at 6:30pm The City of Somers Point will have its annual Christmas Parade this Friday, December 4th. There will be changes to this year’s event.

Are Multivitamins Effective?

I was walking through the GNC store bin Somers Point the other day, looking to get a good deal on a supply of multivitamins.

The store representative was pleasant and helpful. He recommended one that was designed for my age and lifestyle. It occurred to me as I was leaving the store that I’ve been taking a multi-vitamin at the start of my day for as long as I could remember, but I never stopped to think if they were actually doing anything for me. I just assumed they were.

So, I spoke with Dr. David Totton, Ambulatory Pharmacist with Shore Physicians Group in Somers Point and he offered his advice on multivitamins. I’d like to take this opportunity to share what he had to say.

“I

n general, most people will get the daily required amount of vitamins and minerals through consuming a well-balanced diet and do not require a multivitamin supplementation,” said Dr. Totton. “There are, however, certain instances where multivitamin supplementation may be beneficial,

such as during pregnancy, different dietary strategies or if a deficiency is found on routine lab work.”

What is in your Multivitamin?

But what is really in most multivitamins?

Dr. Totton said what most people are referring to when they say multivitamins are specifically multivitamins with minerals which generally contain the daily required amounts of vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K along with potassium, iodine, zinc, calcium, magnesium and/or iron. Dr. Totton suggests if you choose to take a multivitamin, choose one that best fits your individual needs. The multivitamins are available in a variety of formulations based on age, sex and specific nutritional needs.

No Thanks, Herbals Herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wart and ginko are usually lacking research and do not go through the same regulatory processes set in place for most other supplements. “I recommend looking for products that contain the recommended daily allowances and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal of approval on the label.

This certifies that the product contains all ingredients listed on the label in the declared potency and is free from contaminants,” concluded Dr. Totton.

Who Benefits from Multivitamins?

Dr. Totton points out that those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet are often

found to be lacking in some essential nutrients due to their strict dietary restrictions.

“Some of the ones to be mindful of are vitamins B12, D, calcium and iron. Vegetarians and vegans may benefit from a multivitamin; however, they should be aware that most multivitamins contain low amounts of calcium and iron so they may require a specialized product or individual supplements to meet their specific needs,” said Dr. Totton.

One group that is advised to take a multivitamin is pregnant women. Dr. Totton said those multivitamins are to support healthy development of the child. “During pregnancy it is important to be cognizant of six key nutrients: folic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin D, DHA (Omega-3’s), and iodine.

Cut it out!

Dr. Totton offers Medicare wellness visits in conjunction with the primary care physicians at Shore Physicians Group. He suggests to patients during a review of their medications, that if they are currently taking a multivitamin that has not been prescribed by their physician, they should discuss the necessity of taking the vitamin at their next visit. “You may find that you do not need it and that is one less expense and one less pill to worry about each day,” added Dr. Totton.

According to Dr. Totton, multivitamins do not generally interact with most medications, but there are a few notable exceptions. “If you take the blood-thinner warfarin

(brand name Coumadin), you should talk to your doctor before taking any product that contains vitamin K as this can decrease the effectiveness of your blood-thinner.

The Best Way to get the Vitamins Rather than taking a multivitamin, Dr. Totton suggested we all adopt a diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good protein sources and healthy fats. Those components will provide most of the nutrients your body needs. While consuming multivitamins at the recommended dosage is not harmful with the only downside being the cost of the supplement, Dr. Totton said to save the money spent on unnecessary supplements and instead incorporate more healthy foods on a daily basis.

The historic building now home to Trove boasts a tall barrel ceiling, fitting since it was originally a German choir hall relocated from Cologne Avenue in Galloway Township (hence the “Leiderkranz Halle” sign atop the building) by Smithville Village founder Ethel Noyes many decades ago. Before opening their doors in March 2019, Dawn and Jenna undertook the task of refreshing the interior while preserving its original elements. Dawn and Jenna renewed the original hardwood flooring using their not-so-secret weapon: Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. New additions are a custom-made wall display for housing paint cans backed by Jenna's original artwork of colorful dripping paint behind a bespoke retail counter crafted by local carpenter, Mike Boback, whose clan has become part of the Trove family. Although they plan to keep updating the shoppe, the payoff so far has been a perfect backdrop to display their skillfully curated new, vintage, and original handcrafted items.

Dawn and Jenna were no strangers to shop renovation; this was the second Smithville home they created for Trove in just two years.

“In 2017 we started out in a smaller shoppe. Our husbands, Ray and Jeremy, sanded down the wood plank floors and exposed a lovely brick fireplace before adding shiplap to the walls,” Jenna said. “A year later a larger shoppe became available - we were sad to leave but felt we should make the move.”

Trove’s creative personality lent itself to Chalk Paint, so it was a very exciting moment when Trove was selected to carry Annie Sloan products. “Annie Sloan made our job of refinishing so much easier and less time consuming,” said Jenna. “It’s so user-friendly that it just made sense for us to become stockists so we could share this creative magic with our customers.”

Dawn and Jenna, like all Annie’s stockists, are given continuous training. One of the highlights of their retail experience was to enjoy several days of instruction with Annie Sloan herself, the creator of the revolutionary paint. This education and their natural ability enable them to offer painting workshoppes, up-to-date advice on techniques and color selection, and do commissioned painting, including kitchen cabinets. They offer free decorating consultations and recently were thrilled to take the job of renewing Jonathon Peter Photography’s studio, Trove’s neighbor.

Sunday closing laws once divided the community, and put Ocean City in the national spotlight

I

t was hardly the crime of the century, but in August of 1986 it made headlines in local papers and the Washington Post: The owner of an Ocean City supermarket allegedly sold frozen ravioli to an undercover detective.

On a Sunday.

It was one of a series of citations in a sweep of local businesses that summer, with police issuing tickets week after week. Ronald Reagan was president, Dominic Longo was the chief of police in Ocean City and the infamous blue laws were in full effect.

Along with a ban on the sale of alcohol, the Sunday closing laws were woven into the fabric of Ocean City since its foundation in the late 19th century. In the often-retold story, four Methodist ministers – Ezra Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and William Burrell – established a Christian retreat on the island, modeled on Ocean Grove to the north.

Starting as a camp meeting, the Ocean City Association drew up streets and laid out lots for cottages, hotels and businesses. In 1881, the Ocean City Association passed a set of religious restrictions that would one day be known as “blue laws.”

“They were written right into the deeds from the beginning of time,” said local historian John Loper. “That wasn’t just the blue laws, it was a whole series of things, like no gambling, no bone boiling. There was a whole page of it.”

Those restrictions were enshrined in city code and in every property deed.

Loper believes that the restriction on bone boiling sought to keep people from whaling off the island or render the blubber on the beaches. John Peck, for whom the barrier island was once called “Peck’s Beach,” had a whaling station in what is now Ocean City in the 1700s.

Loper said it is still uncertain exactly where.

But even from the start, restrictions included contradictions. The bone boiling, for instance, meant people could not technically make chicken soup at home.

For decades, businesses closed each Sunday. That was unlikely to remain popular among business owners who made most of their money for the year on summer weekends, primarily in July and August. There were some attempts at accommodation, but that only meant more paradoxes.

“We owned a store. You could only sell certain things on a Sunday,” said Ken Cooper, a member of the board and a former president of the Ocean City Historical Museum who grew up with the blue laws.

Both he and Loper seemed to get a kick out of outlining the paradoxes that grew out of them. The idea was to keep the Christian sabbath as a day of rest. That meant people could not buy anything that would involve work.

Frozen ravioli was out, or a raw steak or even an uncut cantaloupe. But you could buy a slice of cantaloupe, a takeout order of cooked ravioli or be served a steak in a restaurant. According to Cooper, you could get ice cream as dessert if you went out to Sunday dinner, but you could not buy a cone for your kids in the afternoon.

Stores could sell a magazine, but not a hardcover book, leading to the ridiculous example of being able to buy a Playboy magazine but not a Bible.

“All of our stores were set up to accommodate the blue laws,” Loper said.

Everything that could be sold on a Sunday was put together in the same aisles, with the others blocked off with string or tape. That could be an issue for chain stores that wanted a consistent layout.

“Those who came from afar never knew where anything was,” Loper said.

There was a lot of gray area, Loper said. There were exceptions for necessities, but that meant constant arguments about what would constitute a necessity.

“I got out of washing a car once,” said Cooper. “I said, ‘Mom, no un-servile work on Sunday.’”

His uncle, Joe Murry, owned a shop in the north end, selling snacks, beach items and sundries. It also had a soda fountain and ice cream. He said he remembered a line of phone booths in the 1950s and ’60s, because few houses had phones, and the items that could not be sold on Sundays were kept separate within the store.

“My uncle got a ticket once because I was fixing a screen door on a Sunday,” he said. A neighbor was a police officer

and called it in.

As Loper points out, Sunday closing laws were once common in New Jersey and around the country. They have been upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court. While they have become rare, some still exist, including in Paramus in Bergen County, where major malls shut down one day a week.

Ocean City ended the blue laws in 1986. Decades on, the exact process is difficult to unravel, with court cases, City Council votes and a hard-fought, narrowly decided referendum in November of that year. One report put the final tally at 3,936 to 3,345.

“It was a very close vote. There are still people on the island that don’t talk to each other because of the vote over blue laws,” Loper said.

Cooper compared the atmosphere in town at the time to that surrounding this year’s presidential race, with sincere anger between some partisans on either side.

“Hopefully, everybody’s over it by now,” Cooper said. He was one of the no votes.

Before the vote, the city got a taste of life without blue laws. According to a report in the Washington Post, an appeals court threw out the restrictions in 1985, or at least stopped the city from enforcing them. That meant arcades, shops, and amusement piers could remain open all week, until the state Supreme Court overruled that decision in 1986.

According to Post reporter Ewen MacAskill, the city soon went back to full enforcement, issuing citations throughout town with an undercover squad that infuriated business owners.

In the report, a local supermarket owner said the rules were so vague as to be impossible to follow, with soap allowed, but not dish liquid.

Today, there are still no bars in town, but the Sunday restrictions that once defined Ocean City for many visitors are almost forgotten.

“If you ask somebody about blue laws today, they won’t know what you’re talking about,” Loper said.

“I was happy to see them go, and I think most people were,” said local author and historian Fred Miller.

Cooper said the Sunday restrictions were just part of life. In some ways, they worked as intended. He said he remembers dinners with the family and a nice break from the frantic pace of summer at least once a week.

“I have fond memories of the blue laws. I might be the only one,” he said.

“Change was inevitable. But I did think it was very special having one day to ourselves.”

ictures of the White House at Christmas time are undoubtedly breathtaking. The perfectly placed decorations and beautiful hand-made Christmas wreaths are awe-inspiring every year.

It would be reasonable to assume that the President exclusively hires the best interior designers in the world to make it happen; however, what you see is actually the work of numerous volunteers from all over the country. One of the volunteers this year was South Jersey native, Andrew Colone. Andrew was hand-selected as one of 70 volunteers from a pool of more than 3,000 applicants to help decorate the entire east wing of arguably the most famous residence in the world.

Andrew stumbled across the opportunity to apply for this once in a lifetime job when he was looking up information on White House Christmas tours.

“For the past few years, I wanted to do the White House Christmas tour, and when I was looking into that, I ran across an article about volunteering to decorate at the White House. After some research, I learned that every year the White House selects a team of volunteers from across the country to come to DC for a week and decorate for the First Lady” Andrew explained.

Andrew’s four-years of decorating experience while working at Starbucks during his college years as well as an internship with the Philadelphia Flyers where he helped decorate the Wells Fargo Center gave him the necessary experience to secure this chance to volunteer.

Entrance to the White House is how you might expect – tight security and numerous members of the secret service wondering the halls. Once he showed his ID and went through airport-like security scanners, he was taken to an offsite warehouse in MD to unbox and start assembling the decorations. Here, he was transported to the White House of Christmas past and

saw some of the decorations used in previous years to as far back as the 50s and 60s. Although his first day he was assigned to the more tedious task of hot gluing caps onto red plaid ornament balls, the commitment was worth it as these would later be used on the most important tree in the house that he got to work on the next day.

On day two, out of the 63 live trees needing decorating, Andrew was assigned with stringing the lights on the 16ft tree in the Grand Foyer of the east wing by the front entrance. The designers were very specific how they wanted the lights to be strung because this was the last Christmas tree people would see on their way out. For instance, NO wires could be showing. It was on this day that he was also able to sneak a peek out of one of the windows in the state dining room to watch the turkey pardoning taking place outside in The Rose Garden and saw the President of the United States from a distance.

To thank them for all their hard work, the volunteers were invited back to The White House for the Volunteer Christmas Reception. The volunteers were then addressed by First Lady Melania Trump as she gave a speech, thanking the volunteers. Andrew was fortunate enough to experience a face-to-face interaction with the First Lady. “Before she left, she approached a group of us, thanking and wishing us Merry Christmas. It was pretty incredible” he described. As can be expected, the night was unforgettable. There were hors d’oeuvres, open bars, bands playing, and members of the service

were there. Certainly, a party that we are all jealous of not getting an invite to.

Not only was Andrew able to participate in this incredible opportunity, but he also met a group of amazing people whom he now dubs his friends for life.

This includes volunteers from all over the country in different walks of life, Gold Star mothers who have lost their child overseas, a cancer doctor, Ben Carson’s wife, nurses, teachers, grandparents, military spouses and members, college students, and former White House interns. The White House really sought to ensure every member of society was represented and had the chance to be able to contribute to perhaps one of the most memorable years in the White House of our lifetime.

Understandably, this is an experience that Andrew will carry with him for his entire life. Not many people can say they had the chance to decorate the White House for Christmas. “It was such an honor and pleasure to have been chosen for this opportunity. The President, First Lady, and the rest of the

White House staff made this wonderful event happen even through Covid-19.

I left not only more appreciative of the White House, but also humbled and grateful to be living in the greatest country in the world. I am very proud to be an American” gushed Andrew. It is something that he is now incorporating into his outlook on life, especially in what has been such a turbulent year, “It also made me realize that anything is possible.

There were people who told me I would never get to do this, but now I can say I did and will always remember the way I felt giving hope and Christmas spirit to the American people during a difficult year.”

Senate Keeps Commitment to our Veterans

W

hen it comes to our veterans and their families, we should always follow the guidance once offered by President John F. Kennedy: "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

Every year, 180,000 young men and women voluntarily join the American armed forces. As long as brave Americans continue to raise their right hands promising to defend our nation against evil, then we must continue to live up to our words and support them and their families during and after their service.

The State Senate recently took action on a package of bi-partisan bills I’m sponsoring upholding our commitment to help veterans and their families by improving health services, education opportunities, and simply showing our gratitude for their services.

To begin with, I’m grateful we are confronting the fact nearly 20% of military

personnel returning from combat suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and brain injury. Many of the cases of suicides, homelessness, and unemployment among our veteran are sadly a result of PTSD and brain trauma. We need to do better to help our veterans overcome these debilitating conditions to help military and veteran families cope with after-effects of war.

My bill, S-2821, directs the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to develop a program to help veterans access evaluation and treatment for PTSD or total brain injury diagnosis related to military service. The program would include offering support and guidance, transportation, and assistance filing disability compensation claims.

These veterans’ services are measures to make these heroes whole again as best we can so they can live normal lives with their families.

Further, the pandmeic has taken its toll on our veterans living in our state's memorial homes. homes. That is why I sponsored a measure, SJR-80, asking Congress to release federal funds to offset COVID-19 related losses to our veteran memorial homes, and to fully fund rebuilding the Paramus and Menlo Park veteran memorial homes.

We need additional funding to support nursing care, prevent food shortages, and reimburse costs related to personal protective equipment. Also, federal funding is urgently needed to rebuild the decaying older Para-

mus and Menlo Park memorial homes. (The Vineland Memorial Home was rebuilt and rededicated in 2005.) It’s imperative Congress help us keep the 950 veterans and spouses living in the memorial homes healthy and safe.

Being in the service of our country, of course, means following orders to fulfill one’s duty. When our uniformed men and women are called to duty, they should keep a benefit they earned, particularly one that helps them transition to civilian life after their service.

Under the existing “New Jersey Tuition Equality for America’s Military (NJTEAM) Act,” a veteran, who qualifies for certain federal educational assistance, lives in New Jersey, and attends a public college or university, is considered to be a State resident entitled to pay the in-state tuition rate, regardless of the veteran’s state of residence. However, COVID has restricted travel and caused many colleges and universities to offer only remote learning.

My bill, S-2553, would ensure veterans, who are enrolled at a NJ public college or university during a period of mandatory remote instruction and who are temporarily out-of-state due to the public health emergency, will maintain their in-state tuition status.

Lastly, while I know those who join the military place service and doing their duty above recognition, we still owe it to them to express our gratitude.

Since 9/11, nearly 20,000 NJ National Guard members, along with active duty and

reservists, have protected our nation from those who want to do our nation harm. Many of these brave men and women left their families to serve overseas on multiple deployments to keep all of us safe. It’s fitting our state recognizes the bravery and sacrifice of these great Americans, which is why I sponsored the bill, S-2227, to create a New Jersey Global War on Terrorism Medal for anyone who served in Operation Enduring Freedom; Operation Noble Eagle; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Operation Nomad Shadow; Operation New Dawn; Operation Inherent Resolve; Operation Freedom’s Sentinel; and Operation Odyssey Lighting.

We are fortunate to have young men and women who willingly choose to endure hardships, knowing the consequences so others would not have t, and I appreciate my Senate colleagues turning words into meaningful action.

Brown was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge for his service while spearheading the ground offensive into Iraq. Christmas Cookie Indulgence

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder ● 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Instructions: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the almond flour and cocoa powder.

Pour in the honey, coconut oil, egg and vanilla extract and blend with a wooden spoon Using your hands, form walnut sized balls of dough. Flatten them on the cookie sheet. They will not spread or rise during baking, so the shape you create is the shape you end up with after baking. The dough can be a little sticky.

Bake at 350 F. for about 1520 minutes, or until completely cooked through.

While the cookies bake, mix all the filling ingredients together in a food processor or using an immersion blender. Allow the cookies to cool after baking and then create your sandwiches using the filling.

NOTE: You can adjust the thickness of the filling by using more or less cocoa powder. Just keep in mind that as it sits, it will thicken more. It takes a few minutes for the cocoa powder to really absorb the liquid. ●

ating healthy through the holidays takes planning.

The first item on my plan of attack is to avoid all that added sugar in Christmas cookies.

How much does the occasional indulgence throw you off? We’ve all been in that situation. You’re eating healthy, exercising everyday, and then your office manager brings in the holiday treats. You eat one. Then you eat two and you wonder if you’ve ruined everything. (So then you eat more, because it’s all a wash, right?)

Realize that for an average, healthy person and for basic weightloss goals, one instance doesn’t wipe out all the efforts you made over the course of that week or month.

Overdoing it is never a safe way to go if you have diabetes or heart failure. Sitting down to a huge piece of pumpkin pie or loads of salt at a holiday dinner could land you in the ER. To our bodies, sugar is sugar. Much of what we eat has a mix of naturally occurring and added sugars. The reason we care about added sugars these days with processed foods – crackers, breads, yogurts – isn’t about the type of sugar, but how much and how its delivered.

The reason sugar from a chocolate bar gives us a sugar high and the same amount of sugar from an apple doesn’t is because the apple has fiber and other nutrients that help our

body break the sugar down slowly.

The chocolate bar, on the other hand, might as well be a needle in the vein.

It’s a direct hit, and our bodies don’t always have the ability to process all that sugar at one time. And sugar has similar addictive properties as drugs.

Which is why the more cookies you eat, the more you will crave. One little bit and you always want more.

I suggest to my clients to allow themselves 6 cookies in the month of December. Reminding them to pace themselves so they are choosy in their selections. Therefore, there is no deprivation, only choice while still practicing discipline.

The first thing you need to choose to do is to avoid added sugar. Plan to snack on nuts and nut butters (the kind without added sugar). Even though these are high in fat, I’d rather

have them than the sugar. Nuts and nut butters make you feel full and satisfied, and they’re also heart healthy.

The fats in nuts are unsaturated fats that help lower cholesterol. The fuller you feel, the less cookies you’ll indulge in.

This Christmas, try this healthy cookie recipe : Homemade Healthy Oreos Cookie Ingredients: ● 8 oz. slivered almonds (blended into a fine flour) ● 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder ● 1/3 cup maple syrup (or honey) ● 1/3 cup solid coconut oil (or butter) ● 1 large egg ● 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Filling Ingredients: ● 1/4 cup solid coconut oil (or butter)

Remembering Stainton’s Department Store

A Look Back

n April 13, 1913, Howard S. Stainton bought Emma Morris Corson’s dry good store at 808 Asbury Avenue. It was the beginning of what would become the largest department store in Cape May County.

The store was always busy in the summer, but thanks to Stainton’s business sense, the store did well the rest of the year. He bought 810 Asbury Avenue in 1916 to meet the demands of the people.

Christmas season was as busy as summer as people came to shop.

Ocean City Library Offers StoryWalk

R

eading a book with kids offers a wide array of benefits. Each story can help children learn new words and sounds, spark their imagination, and aid in the development of social skills and communication. It’s also a great way to interact with your children. Now, a new display in Ocean City is bringing people together, one page at a time.

Situated in Lake Memorial Park at 407 Wesley Avenue is an interactive StoryWalk, where kids and parents can experience the joy of reading while taking in the beauty of nature. The pages of children’s books are transformed into signs that are placed along the park’s circular path, allowing visitors to read a fun story while walking amongst the trees. As you stroll down the trail, signs will direct you

to the next page.

The StoryWalk concept was originally created by Anne Ferguson in Montpelier, Vermont, and developed thanks to the help of Rachel Senechal of the town's Kellogg-Hubbard Library. As of 2017, over 300 libraries throughout North America and 13 countries have offered outdoor StoryWalks.

Taimi Kelley is a children’s librarian for the Ocean City Free Public Library and brought the concept to South Jersey. Kelley went on her StoryWalk with her children during a family vacation in Vermont, and says that “it merged two things that I love, children’s books and nature.” While the concept has been on Kelley’s mind for some time, she explains that the COVID-19 pandemic and this time of social distancing has provided a perfect opportunity to implement the idea.

The first StoryWalk in Ocean City took place two months ago, and according to Kelley, the concept has received great feedback: “It’s been overwhelmingly positive from the community.” Parents are encouraged to provide feedback to library staff using a special QR code found at the end of the walk.

On December 4th, Ocean City Library unveiled their latest StoryWalk display, fea-

turing the pages Snowmen at Night. The book, written by Caralyn Buehner and illustrated by Mark Buehner, will be on display now through January 30th. Members of the Library were on hand for a special meet and greet to provide goodies for the kids and answer any questions.

During the evening hours between 3-9 pm, the signs within the park are illuminated by soft string lights. At the end of the story, visitors can participate in a scavenger hunt

and enter their names for the chance to win a special prize.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

Pathway to Heaven

W

e are in the midst of the holiday season and among the many emotions that accompany these holidays, the loss of loved ones is one emotion that is deeply felt. Not only at holidays, but at times we yearn for some confirmation that those we have lost still reach out to us; it may be in the form of a cardinal, a coin or some other symbolism that connects us with the departed. Perhaps we even manufacture these symbols to help us feel closer and ease our grief at least in the short term. I can tell you though, from a personal experience that is so real, it made me believe that in a sense, they are still with us. Before my father passed away, he and my mother used to attend the Air Force reunions from his WWII Fighter Group. After he passed, I was reading one of the newsletters the Fighter Group mailed out and saw there was going to be another reunion at Wright Pattison Air Force base in Ohio.

I convinced my wife that we should go in

my father’s stead to represent him. We packed up our young children and made the trip. To spend time with these WWII pilots and ground crews and hear of their exploits was extremely humbling.

It was also heartwarming to hear them speak glowingly of my father and tell stories about him I had never heard before. A banquet was held in the evening and our family was seated at a large circular table with a few other guests. It was a very stirring and patriotic evening with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag and the singing of God Bless America. Even the old war dogs in wheelchairs were helped to their feet to salute the flag. After we retired to our room, I reflected on the evening and remarked how my dad would have loved to be there. My six year old son looked at me and said as matter of fact as he could, “he was there.” My wife and I looked at each other and asked him to explain, expecting a very innocent and juvenile answer. Our son said that when the lady next to me got up and left, my dad sat down in her chair. I remembered that at one point the chandelier above us dimmed for a moment and right after that the lady next to me said she felt a chill and was leaving to get her sweater.

A little unnerved, I asked our son what my dad was wearing. He replied my dad was wearing a dark blue suit and a white shirt. My dad did own a dark blue suit that he would wear with his white shirt but we hardly accepted that as unusual.

Our son went on to say that when one of the men walked up to the podium to speak, my dad went over, stood behind him, put his thumbs in his ears and wiggled his fingers. We were stunned.

My father was quite the prankster and I had seen him do this in the past before our son was born plus the man my dad stood behind was one of his closest buddies. Acknowledging this was a bit much to believe, so we later asked our son to go over the story again which he did in exactly the same detail. We left the next morning to make our way home feeling like something very special occurred but I wondered why was this event experienced by my son and not me? I briefly felt pangs of envy and even jealousy but I soon believed that my father used our son as a vehicle to reach out to me. As an adult, my pathways were probably so blocked up with the minutiae of daily stressors, nothing would get through. The innocence of youth and the mental fertility of a six

year old gave my father the pathway he needed. Even now, almost thirty years later, I still draw on that experience. By now, my mental pathways resemble the Schulykill Expressway at rush hour with one lane closed so I don’t anticipate my dad coming through to me. But based on what we experienced, I do believe our loves ones reside closer to us than many of us realize and I am comforted by the thoughts that even though there might not be an immediate response to our efforts of communication or even no earthly response at all, our loved ones continue to walk along side us.

y goodness, can 2020 just be over already?

Just as I am sitting down to write this column, I’m learning of two more Philly sports figures who have passed away too soon. Here’s hoping for better things in 2021!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles lost to the Packers, but not before benching their franchise QB in favor of a high-profile rookie. The Phillies continue to befuddle their fan base as conflicting reports come out about one of the top arms in the starting rotation. Also, a Phillies legend passes away before hopefully getting the game’s highest accolade.

New Sixers coach Doc Rivers has a specific name for what position Ben Simmons will play. Plus, a former Sixer who has come back to Philly

has a greater appreciation for the team’s two biggest stars. The Flyers and the NHL don’t appear like they will start play on January 1st, but a league calendar is beginning to take shape. Finally, one of the nicer sportswriters I’ve ever encountered on the beat passes away after a long illness at just age 55.

From the entertainment world, I finally watched a Netflix series Carson Wentz benched that everyone was talking about and it absolutely lives up to draft pick Jalen Hurts. Midway the “hype”. Plus, the final season through the 3rd quarter, after Wentz missed Zach Ertz and of an award winning drama about a dysfunctional family in Chicago John Hightower with throws to begins on Showtime. As always kill a series, #11 came off the field though, we begin with sports, and to hear Doug Pederson tell him my thoughts: that Hurts would quarterback ● I’ll start with the Eagles as I the next set of downs. Of course, this being 2020, kicker Jake Elliott then missed the extra point and the Eagles trailed 23-16 with six-and-a-half minutes remaining. ● Which leads me to the defense. The Eagles have done a decent job of stopping the run this season, but right after they got to within seven, Green Bay’s Aaron Jones ripped off a 77-yard touchdown run in which the Birds missed at least four, maybe five chances to tackle him. Poor tackling, poor defense, and once again right after doing something good, the 2020 Eagles follow that up with something awful. So, the team drops to 3-8-and-1, and now we wait to see who will start at QB against the Saints next at home.

One thing to make clear is that the Eagles are basically “married” to Wentz as he signed a four-year $128 million dollar contract just over a year ago. Wentz turns 28 on December 30th and by all appearances, he is a broken and upset athlete. Asked after the game if he thought getting a break to reassess would help him, he said it would not. But what choice do the Eagles have at this point? For the record, Wentz was an anemic 6-for-15 for 79 yards when he sat down.

He led the offense to an opening field goal, but also was sacked four times for 22 yards. Not all those sacks can be blamed on the leaky offensive line.

For my part, I think the Eagles should start Hurts against the Saints and keep playing him as long as he gives them a chance to win. Give Hurts a full week to prepare as the starter and see what he can do as the #1 signal caller. I’m not saying Hurts is all of a sudden the better athlete.

I’m saying that Hurts gives them the best chance to be competitive right now.

One last item on the Eagles as Davante Adams was the latest wide receiver to torch the Birds when they could’ve drafted him.

In 2014, the Eagles took Jordan Matthews in the second round with the 42nd pick overall. The Packers selected Adams 11 picks later and he’s become Aaron Rodgers go-to guy. For what it’s worth, Pro Bowl receivers Allen Robinson and Jarvis Landry were also on the board when the Eagles picked at 42. Can we finally admit that the Eagles have a talent evaluation problem?

Moving on to the Phillies now as I wrote in my last column about

Phillies owner John Middleton and his tone-deaf decision to cut 80 employees from the staff on Thanksgiving Eve. Well, Middleton is at it again, depending on who you believe as a national report popped up that the Phillies are listening to offers for pitcher Zack Wheeler. Just a few hours later, Middleton and Team President Andy MacPhail both vehemently denied the story to local Phil- Dick Allen. 1942-2020 lies media, but the original story was already out this whole fiasco up as another there. In basketball, Sixers Head Coach Doc Rivers is getting plenty of questions these days about what position he’s going to put Ben Simmons at. In a recent media briefing, Rivers pointed out that he doesn’t care if you call Simmons a point guard, a point forward or something else.

Rivers says he thinks Simmons is a “facilitator." Rivers also mentioned true point guards he’s coached like Chris Paul or Rajon Rondo. The difference is, both of those guys are about 6-1, while Simmons has those skills at 6-10! Finding the right fit for the 24-year-old Simmons is just part of the reason Rivers was hired to be the next Sixers coach.

It’s early, but one veteran NBA player has already seen a difference in the leadership that Simmons and Joel Embiid are providing for the Sixers. Justin Anderson is back for his second stint with the Sixers, and that new free agent Dwight Howard would add a voice of leadership by coming to Philadelphia, Anderson says he’s been pleased to see Simmons and Embiid leading both vocally and by example so far too. Anderson was first with the Sixers in 2017, and coming back to the team, but seeing Simmons and Embiid now at age 24 and 26, he says he can see a difference in their maturity level and leadership. Let’s hope Anderson’s analysis leads to more Sixers wins!

In hockey, reports are that the NHL season might start around January 15th, and if that’s the case, that’s only a few weeks after the original hoped for date of January 1st. Reports are that the league is floating a proposal for a 52- or 56-game season, and it wants the Stanley Cup champion crowned by July 15, enabling the 2021-22 season to start at its normal time (early October) and have an 82-game schedule. This is far from a done-deal though

as the league and the players’ association still must agree on some labor issues that are being discussed. Stay tuned.

My last sports item concerns a man whose work I admired and whose demeanor I respected.

Longtime Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer sports columnist John Smallwood passed away after a long illness at the too young age of 55. “Smalls” was a fixture on the Sixers beat, and I was fortunate enough to cross paths with him professionally many times. I think my enduring memory of him will be his kindness and empathy for others. In an Inquirer article about his passing, Former Daily News executive sports editor Josh Barnett said “as much as John wrote about the Sixers or Eagles, he was a big advocate for women’s sports, and pushing for

sports that he felt were underrepresented in our coverage to be given their due. That’s among the things I admired about him most.” R.I.P. John Smallwood.

I’ll close with a two items from entertainment as I finally watched “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix and instantly fell in love with the seven episode miniseries. Based on a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, the story is about an orphaned chess prodigy on her rise to becoming the world's greatest chess player while struggling with emotional problems and drug and alcohol dependency.

Talk about “girl power”, this miniseries has it all. To date, more than 62 million households have watched the show. Inquiries for “chess sets” are up 250% on eBay. Google searches for “how to play chess” have hit an all-time high in 9 years!

Thanks to my friend Leslie Gudel for also providing me with some backstory about the author of the source material, the 1983 book written

by Walter Tevis. Netflix could do a miniseries about Tevis himself as three of his six novels were adapted into films. “The Hustler”, “The Color of Money” and “The Man Who Fell to Earth” were all written by Tevis, and now he’s had a resurgence with “The Queen’s Gambit”. Bottom line, if you’re looking for some captivating television to watch while you’re stuck inside, I highly recommend this series!

Lastly, the 11th and final season of “Shameless” has begun on Showtime. I’ve been

hooked since January 9th of 2011 when the fictional Gallagher family first debuted in America.

The show is adapted from the British series of the same name, but I can’t imagine anyone else than William H. Macy inhabiting the lead role. The series depicts the poor, dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher (Macy), a neglectful single father of six.

He spends his days drunk or in search of misadventures, and his children learn to take care of themselves. This one is not necessarily for “family viewing”, but I’ve loved it all the same and will be sorry to see it go.

Hope for the Holidays Event Coming to AC

he 2nd Annual Hope For The Holidays is scheduled to take place at Brown’s Park in Atlantic City on December 19th.

This annual event, hosted by Recovery Force of Atlantic County, was created to address the high risks of adolescent substance abuse and mental disorders in Atlantic City.

Addiction and overdoses are at an all-time high in the wake of the Covid pandemic, isolation, and increased depression and anxiety.

As a society, we are increasingly more aware of the warning signs of addiction, the risks of drug and alcohol abuse, and the resources available to help addicted loved ones. However, what most often gets overlooked are the children growing up in households with parents who struggle with addiction. Kids growing up in these

environments have the highest risk of becoming addicted themselves, however, treatments and therapies are usually only offered to them after they’ve become “broken” adults.

The Recovery Force of Atlantic County recognized this void in social services and set out to provide resources for our local youth. The nonprofit advocacy organization exists to break the stigmas surrounding addiction and put a face on recovery.

In doing so, the group hosts several public events throughout the year that create a safe space to learn about recovery including Overdose Awareness Day over the summer as well as this month’s event, Hope For The Holidays. Both events aim to destigmatize addiction and provide those afflicted by the disease with the help and resources that they need to live a healthy, full life free from shame.

Hope For The Holidays will take place on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at Brown’s Park located at Baltic and Kentucky Avenues, between 2-5 pm. The event will feature an afternoon of holiday traditions including hot chocolate and cookies, holiday stocking decorating, cards, caroling, gifts, a visit from Elmo, and a hot meal to go. No Christmas party would be complete without a visit from Santa, Mrs. Clause, and some elves who will be in attendance giving out gifts.

Hope For The Holidays is a free afternoon of holiday fun and education. The event is first-come, firstserve. Parking is available at Atlantic Cape Community College. Guests will enter on Kentucky Avenue and work their way through the various stations before exiting with a hot meal to-go.

Covid precautions will be strictly enforced. Guests will be streamlined from station to station to ensure social distancing along with hand sanitizing stations and face masks.

The event was recently modified to comply with the Governor’s executive order limiting gatherings to 25 people.

Hope For The Holidays would not be possible without the generous support of local business sponsors.

Recovery Force of Atlantic County is a 501c3 nonprofit advocacy organization led by and for people and families impacted by addiction. Outdoor Winter Fitness for the Whole Family

t certainly has been getting colder and colder.

Bundle up for some winter activities to torch calories and have a little fun. Don’t let the deep freeze discourage you from getting outside and getting active. If you dress properly in layers, and choose fitness activities that are fun, you and your family can actually look forward to working out in the winter.

Winter activities, particularly when there’s snow on the ground, are good for strengthening our core muscles because of the uneven, slick surface. It’s a great way to get your core muscles, and your entire body in shape. Underneath all those layers, you can burn some serious calories.

Head over to your local sledding hill (provided there’s snow) for a fun, cardiovascular workout. Sledding requires you to use multiple muscle groups to steer as you speed down hills. You also exert a lot of effort while walking your sled back up the hill so you can go down again. Walking uphill is where you get the most benefit because climbing hills is an aerobic activity that’s also great for your leg muscles. How many calories you burn depends on how many backand-forth trips you make and the steepness of the hill.

Cross country skiing is another good one, because you're using both your upper and lower body.

It's also a terrific calorie burner. Another advantage of cross country skiing is that it’s cost friendly and you can do it in a nearby park. Hitting the slopes can be pricey. Lift tickets and ski rental costs make downhill skiing a more expensive sport and it’s not as intense a calorie burner as cross-country skiing. However,

most ski enthusiasts do it for hours at a time, so the calorie burn can add up.

Ice skating is another winter exercise that's great for the family and perfect for working those leg muscles. As with skiing, how fast and how long you skate will determine how many calories you ultimately burn.

One advantage to ice skating over skiing is that it's not as costly and most rinks will rent you skates if you don't have your own.

Snowshoeing is another winter fitness activity that offers a total body workout. Snowshoeing will strengthen your leg muscles while getting your heart pumping.

Once that first snow arrives, make the most of it by bundling up the family for play in the snow. You can burn anywhere from 200 to 400 calories an hour with this activity depending on what you do in the snow. Build a fort, have an old-fashioned snowball fight, and make snow angels. With football, you'll be running a lot, an aerobic workout with a big caloric burn. The whole family can enjoy this activity.

Grab the family one evening and take a walk to see how your neighbors have decorated their homes for the holidays. The furry friends can even get in on this one. There is limited daylight in the winter, so wear reflective clothing if you plan to be out after dinner.

Any activity that incorporates family is a great opportunity, not only to burn some calories but to spend quality time while doing it!

Weight Gain and the Obesity Epidemic Explained

Weight loss has been a national obsession. Over 40% of American women and more than 25% of men are trying to lose weight through diverse methods including a number of dietary regimens, behavior modification techniques, exercise programs and drugs.

I

t is a fact that one-third of America's population is overweight and the number of severely obese children has doubled since 1980. Obesity is shaking the very structure of our society and is becoming a worldwide pandemic and recently has been acknowledged as a major health problem. It has been estimated that about 300,000 deaths a year are caused, directly or indirectly by obesity.

Scientific studies have clearly demonstrated that the obese are at higher risk for developing hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory conditions, breast cancer in women, colon and rectal cancer in men, gall bladder disease and degenerative

joint disease. Excessive weight contributes to reducing the lifespan of both men and women. It is impossible to find a "miracle" product or a "magic bullet" that will address all the key elements in weight reduction.

The typical American diet is a major factor contributing to excess weight gain.

Because it is made up of many refined and processed foods, is low in fiber, and is high in simple sugars. The easy availability of such products and the $36 billion each year spent

by American food industries in advertising its products is a major contributor to the overweight epidemic. Whole foods, whole grain, low fat, high complex carbohydrates, and a high fiber diet is recommended to avoid excess weight. It is not necessarily a matter of how much a person eats, but rather what the person eats. It is very important to know that a person does not need to consume dietary fat in order to make the body fat. Excess calories from protein and carbohydrates can be converted to fat by the body and stored. Only the essential fatty acids must be supplied by the diet. All body cells can take the triglycerides from circulating lipoproteins to use for energy or store them for future use. Most cells can store only a limited amount, but adipose or fat cells can store 50 to 100 times more.

The only way to reduce stored body fat is to burn it for energy, and this can only happen if the body consumes fewer calories than

it needs and then turns to the energy stored in the adipose/fat reserves.

Effectiveness of Weight Reduction Methods Among the many diet regimens and methods that have been promoted for weight reduction (from diet changes from blocking of carbohydrates and fats, diet and appetite restriction slimming methods, liposuction and bypass/stomach restriction), one of the most effective of clearing of fat is the method developed by Dr. Simeon and described in his manuscript "Pounds and Inches". It was popularized more recently by Kevin Trudeau in his book "The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About".

Body fat can be divided into three subgroups: ● Structural - that surrounds organs and joints. ● Normal/Functional Fat - which participates in the body's daily nutritional metabolism. ● Secure reserve fat - which is stored in what we refer to as the "B" areas: named belly, butt and breast. The body's daily metabolism has little access to these areas in its daily routine.

Dr. Simeon observed that a 500 calorie diet in conjunction with HCG administration in small amounts could impact obesity in a

dramatic fashion and especially so on the "B" areas. The HCG method is not a diet program; it is a method of freeing fat from fat cells and switching the body-process of the external supply of calories from the diet into the internal supply from excessive fat. With this method the weight and inches are decreasing day by day. Daily activities can be easily continued without feeling fatigued or tired.
