Some Kind of Grinch Letter from the editor

D

o you remember how the Grinch tried to steal Christmas? I think if there was a 2020 remake, the Grinch would be the Covid-19 virus.

So much has been taken from us in the spring, summer, and fall.

Now we are dreading all that will be missed this holiday season. Will some traditions be lost this year?

Just like the Grinch, Covid-19 can try and try to take away our joy and holiday spirit. It can take our holiday parties and family gatherings, parades, concerts, shopping days, and even our church services and tree lightings.

But like the Grinch, Covid-19 will never succeed in taking our holiday spirit because like the story goes- “Perhaps Christmas means a little bit more.�

Many things that really matter are still ours to enjoy like driving or walking around the neighborhood and enjoying lights and decorations, family movie nights, singing Christmas carols, decorating a tree or baking cookies. Those cannot be taken or covered up with masks. Those little

moments are what fill up our hearts and make the holidays special.

In this issue of Shore Local, check out Holly Martin's column about traditions page 9. It really rang true with me. When I think back on my own childhood and the years I spent raising my kids, it was the little family rituals that made the holidays special. Often silly, those small moments made us laugh and bond together.

Sometimes adversity brings us closer and it can bring out the best in us. This year has been a tremendous test. It has peeled away a lot of layers, revealing what we really need and value. I was inspired by a friend recently who viewed the pandemic as an opportunity to learn how to get things done differently, more efficiently. Perspective truly is everything.

We can choose to be dismal and depressed or strong and steady.

Life's a journey. I never imagined I would find myself in many of the circumstances I have faced. Yet, I am stronger and better because I did it.

We will come out of this pandemic soon and because of it, we will be stronger, smarter, and more versatile.

Hang in there. Focus on the silver lining and all the promise of the holiday season.

Christmas trees by the Sea

ela n i e St a m p o n e thought we could all use some extra holiday cheer this year. So she along with her husband, Rich Stampone, placed a Christmas tree at the 55th Street beach in Ocean City. She even left a sharpie for the next person to write a wish or prayer on a clam shell and place it under the tree as she had done. Afterwards, they,along with their beloved dog, Maisy, took photos by the beautiful beach tree.

Melanie posted the photos on Facebook inviting others to enjoy the tree on 55th Street. Since then hundreds have stopped by to add a shell and grab a photo.

Social media spread the word like wildfire. That combined with folks seeking socially-distant ways to celebrate the holiday season, made this a very popular spot to visit. Saturday afternoon, a line formed around the much celebrated pine tree at the 55th Street beach.

The same scene played out on the North Street beach in Ocean City. Lines formed with visitors each getting a chance to take a photo and/ or add a shell. The North Street beach tree in Ocean City is what started it all.

In 2019, Sue McElwee placed the tree on the beach. "It makes me so happy to bring so many people some joy and I love creating traditions here," said McElwee.

This year, McElwee collected a bucket of clam shells and left markers for people to add a name or a wish on. The Stampone's thought it would be nice to have one on the south end of the island as well.

The tree has already drawn some new traditions. For instance, McElwee wrote the names of her three children on shells to decorate the tree.

More shells with more names were quickly added. This year, McElwee

collected a bucket of clam shells and left colorful markers in the sand for people to add their own shells. Some added decorations and even solar powered lights, which created a stunning sight for night viewers.

Christmas trees are popping up on other island beaches as well. Ventnor City has one on Derby Avenue and more are sure to follow.

When the world is in a pandemic, these symbols of holiday cheer bring hope and joy to many.

This year, like most things in 2020, has been immensely different. The abundant need for hot meals and resources has grown exponentially.

In the month of September alone, over 40,000 meals were dispatched with over 130,000 meals being served since March. Families in our area are struggling more than ever in the wake of Covid-19 shutdowns.

The Salvation Army has not missed a beat in providing meals and resources, however with the high demand, there is a shortage of resources.

In the thick of the holiday season, the Salvation Army is in need of three

specific things that will help them to continue to give. ● The Adopt-a-Family program provides holiday gifts for families in need. Normally, Caesar’s hosts a big party inviting guests to choose families from the Angel Tree to donate gifts for. In the wake of Covid, that party was unable to occur so there is an even higher need for individuals willing to give this year. The families who receive the gifts are asked to provide a list of things that they need and are then invited to list a few things that they want. There are hundreds of families in our area that do not have the resources to give their children a plentiful Christmas. If you have the means and are willing to adopt a family this Christmas, fill out the application listed below or contact Shana Picciotto at shana.picciotto@use. salvationarmy.org. ● The Salvation Army is in need of bell ringers this season. Typically, they offer job opportunities for local men and women, paying them to work as a bell ringer. However, with so much need in 2020, they are asking for individuals to volunteer their time so that 100% of the proceeds can go to providing food for the community. If you’re interested in volunteering your

time, please fill out the application on the website below. ● Lastly, the Salvation Army is in need of small businesses willing to place countertop kettles in their establishments. Every little bit of change helps, so having the kettle on countertops is a great invitation for patrons to drop a dollar or two in the kettle to feed a family. This year, the Salvation Army has the ability to accept Apple and Google Pay as well.

We are all on this “2020 ride” together. As a community, we must lean into one another. If you don’t have the financial means to adopt a family, maybe you can volunteer a couple of hours to ring the bell at one of the kettle locations. However you choose to give this year, just remember that we are South Jersey. Keeping on with Traditions

H

oliday traditions seem to be different with every family. I’ve heard everything from cooking certain foods to some crazy “before bed” rituals. Everyone has their own tradition they follow every year.

When I was younger, my parents would surprise me with an advent calendar on December 1st. I would open up the small cardboard door each day to have my treat of a small chocolate. 24 chocolate candies until Santa arrives! Later that day, we’d pull out the christmas tree and decorate it with all the same glass orna-

ments I’ve seen every year, but every year the tree would look different. Once it got dark, we would drive around town and look at all the beautiful christmas lights. I still love seeing how each house is so different from the next. From the simple homes that look like gingerbread houses to the homes that

Clark Griswald would be proud of.

Then, right before bed, we turned on the tv to watch Polar Express for the one millionth time all while dancing and singing along.

I know all around town there are many different traditions going on.

If I had to guess, I’m willing to bet everyone used to keep with tradition to leave Santa milk and cookies on Christmas Eve. Like clockwork, we’d pick out the best cookies from the cookie far and a nice tall glass of milk and race off to bed. Knowing Santa would show up at sometime during that night to enjoy his snack and leave

all the gifts.

I remember in school hearing classmates talk about going to their local town’s tree lighting or parades.

Some told me about their “special recipe” for food to feed Santa’s reindeer and local animals. Some people like to make cookies and pies while others make Yule Logs and gingerbread houses. For some families, the tradition of a holiday dinner is what they look forward to the most. All the different food from your family's culture. There’s always the tradition of caroling up and down the street. If I’ve learned anything from the movie

Elf, I know, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

The winter months are great for other traditions like enjoying the snow and the sports that come along with that. Plenty of friends would pack up the family’s SUV to travel to the mountains to hit some slopes on their skis and snowboards. I used to grab my red plastic sled and try to find the steepest hill to race down while others ice skated on the nearby lake.

Even a good old fashioned snowball fight is something I look forward to every year. There’s something truly satisfying about making that perfect circular ball of snow. Meanwhile, the neighbor builds their annual snowman complete with a scarf and carrot nose.

The last few months of the year can be cold and stressful, but the

endless traditions remind us of all the fun we can continue to have.

December Snow On The Way? Weather

I

f you’ve ever dreamed of a white Christmas in South Jersey, you know that they are historically difficult to come by. In fact, there’s only a 5 to 7 percent chance of having at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning, the definition of a white Christmas.

But if by some chance you’ve ever dreamed of a white December 5th, your odds increase dramatically.

South Jersey snow lovers take note. Or perhaps you’re already aware of a little snow magic synonymous with the fifth of December, which has oddly seen a flurry of flakes since the turn of the century. Since the year 2000, no December day through Christmas brings a better chance for snow each year. And actually, it’s not even close. Snow in South Jersey is five times more likely on December

5th than any other of the first 25 days of the month. And over the last 20 years, the fifth of December doesn’t just bring coatings of snow, although there have been a few. But 5 times since the year 2000, there has been a sizable snow on that magical date, when two to as much as six inches of snow blanketed the landscape.

Contrast that with Christmas Day, a difficult day for eternally hopeful white Christmas dreamers. Not only have the last 20 years been fairly snowless on December 25th, never recording an inch or more of snow.

But as long as records have been kept, it has never snowed more than an inch on Christmas Day, and reliable records go back over 75 years. The few white Christmases that we’ve had in South Jersey have come from snow that fell days or even a week before. Our last white Christmas in fact, 11 years ago, came from some icy and crusty leftover snow from a blizzard back on December 19, 2009.

Is there any science behind the snow magnetism that the fifth of December offers? Actually, no. It’s simply coincidence. Rather, a string of coincidences that reached its peak back in the early 2000’s. I remember it well, as it was when I first moved

to South Jersey back on the first of December in 2002. It’s of course no secret that I am snow lover, and this snow lover was moving to the Jersey shore from the mountains of Vermont, paradise for those fond of what the Green Mountain ski resorts dub “white gold.” But as a meteorologist and realist, I fully never expected to see snow again in early December.

Mother Nature promptly taught me a lesson, as 5 inches of snow fell in South Jersey on December 5th, 2002. One year later, another 5 inch snowfall fell on the exact same day, and I noted the seemingly innocent coincidence. While the streak was temporarily broken in December of 2004, another two inches of snow on December 5, 2005 got us back on track. 2006 was snowless, but four more inches fell in 2007. And so it went. By the time the decade ended in 2009, 5 of 7 years brought measurable snow on the persistently snowy calendar day.

The new decade may have caused December 5th to lose some of its magic, until just a few years ago when that long last magic was rekindled.

Back in 2018, 5 inches of early season snow covered the South Jersey snow-scape on December 5th. Sure enough, it was the only snow we saw all month.

Add it all up, and there’s a 25 percent chance in the last 20 years of seeing an inch or more of snow on the fifth day of December. No other December day before Christmas has more than a 5 percent chance of such a claim.

If you happen to glance at the calendar, that date is coming up this

weekend. And as I write this column just after Thanksgiving, there is sure enough the threat of a storm for the weekend of December 5-6th. And there will be some colder air around in the days leading up to any potential storm too. But to get snowfall in early December, you have to “thread the needle” just right. That means the storm track has to be perfect, and there has to be just enough cold air meeting up with that perfect storm track. While things can certainly change, I don’t see the needle being threaded this year. After all, it is 2020.

And whatever “normally” happens, we’ve learned to expect the opposite this year.

But the prospects are there for occasional shots of cold the first half of December, and occasional opportunities for storms. While it could very well just be periodic bouts of rain over the next few weeks, I’d say the chances for snow in early December are better than normal this year.

But keep in mind that normal on any given day, other than December 5th, is a 0 to 5 percent chance for some white stuff. So remember, the bar is set pretty low.

Holiday Light Show on the Lake ▶Thursday-Sunday

from 5:30-8:30pm starting Thanksgiving Historic Smithville 615 E. Moss Mill Rd. Christmas Trees made from over 50,000 Christmas lights magically float over Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. The moment darkness falls, an orchestrated show of lights and music is played out across the lake. The lights dance and chase each other to the music all the while reflecting of the water’s surface. The show can be seen from either side of the village as well as the bridge.

The show runs in loops of about 30 minutes, so anytime you arrive from 5:30-8:30, you will be able to catch the entire show.

Big changes proposed for Atlantic Ave. in Margate Four lane road may change to two lanes

A

proposal under consideration in Margate could reduce the four lanes of Atlantic Avenue to two.

“Just trying to keep the people safe is what we’re doing,” said Mayor Michael Becker.

At this stage, the idea is just a proposal. Officials plan to outline the idea at two town hall virtual meetings, planned for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 6 p.m. Dec. 15. A link to the virtual presentation will be posted at www. margate-nj.com.

In addition to hearing from Margate engineer Ed Dennis and other officials, the meetings will give residents a chance to provide input on the idea, which traffic engineers refer to as a ‘road diet.’

The wide road has two traffic lanes in each direction, along with parking

on either side and a bike lane. As proposed, the road would be restriped to create a median and turn lane as well as a buffer between the bike lane and the vehicle lane.

According to Becker, the city does not yet have the results of a study launched this year, or the input from residents on what could be a major change.

“I’m not against it. I want to hear what the results are,” he said. “Longport already did it.”

He and other members of the city’s three-member Board of Commissioners say they want to hear what the public thinks about the proposal. At a workshop meeting Nov. 19, John Amodeo, the city’s commissioner of public safety, said there would be notices on the city’s website, posted to social media and announced through other methods.

The workshops were originally set for Dec. 8 and Dec. 10, but were delayed to allow more time to inform residents.

“They would be virtual public pre-

sentations, possibly one during the day and one in the evening,” he said at the meeting, a recording of which is posted on the city website. “It would be a presentation on the concept of a ‘road diet,’ which in plain English is

the reduction from four lanes down to two lanes on Atlantic Avenue.”

He said the pros and cons would be presented, as well as the expected safety benefits on a road that sees steady traffic throughout the year and multiple pedestrian crossings in the summer as people head to and from the beach.

“The idea is to make sure the pub-

lic is informed, and that would be a two-way street to get feedback from the public,” Amodeo said.

Commissioner Maury Blumberg wanted extra steps to be taken to get the word out about the plans. He asked how the city would let residents and property owners know. Amodeo said it would be through the normal channels.

“I love normal channels,” Blumberg said. But he said the city’s public relations firm and local media would not be enough, suggesting the city spend extra on a mailer to residents.

“I know that a mail-in costs money, but I think it’s that important that every taxpayer and every resident should know what we’re thinking about doing here,” he said.

If the project moves forward and is unsuccessful, he said, the city government will hear that they held a meeting in December and the public did not know.

“We will be run out of town. And I don’t want to be run out of town. I love it here,” he said.

Other presentations about major projects have seen few residents participate, according to the discussion at the workshop meeting.

“I think the more information that we put out to the public, the better off we are,” said Becker at the meeting.

Committee members said Atlantic City plans a similar project, but there are no plans in Ventnor between the two cities. It’s been years since Ocean City undertook a similar project along West Avenue, which was formerly four lanes wide. The change was continued into the south end in 2015.

Some residents feared massive traffic delays along the busy road, but that has not seemed to have materialized. The change has eliminated jockeying between lanes as drivers try to turn left, because there is now a dedicated turn lane, and supporters of the proposal argued that the change improved safety for pedestrians.

In the summer, as cars in one lane stopped for pedestrians, some drivers would change lanes and continue, leading to many close calls. Traffic engineers and police said having one lane each way also reduced speeding.

Once approved, Becker said the project would not take long to complete.

“It would just be restriping. It should not be a major problem,” he said. According to Becker, the com-

missioners will factor the public input heavily in their decision on whether to proceed with the proposal.

Engineer Ed Dennis said if the commissioners decide to move ahead with the proposal, the new traffic pattern could be in place by Memorial Day or shortly after Labor Day. The estimated total cost would be about $400,000, he said. The state Department of Transportation has awarded Margate a grant of close to $275,000 toward the cost of the project.

A New Jersey Department of Transportation spokesman did not respond to an emailed request for comment. Information posted by the state DOT indicates road diets are an affordable way to reduce traffic speeds and improve safety, indicating the change can also improve economic development.

“Road diets are really becoming standard practice across the country,” said Barbara McCann in a posted video. She was the director of the office of safety, energy and environment at the US Department of Transportation who now works at the Federal Highway Administration. She cited studies that indicate the change reduces crashes, including some of the most dangerous kinds of crashes.

The video said the DOT supports the practice where applicable, while describing it as a local decision.

Ocean City traffic safety Sgt. Brian Hopely said in the video that he thought the road diet would be a great idea in his city. He expected a reduction in the number of accidents, more safety for pedestrians and a safer route for bicyclists.

Drew Fasy, an advocate for bike safety in the city, said he also expected more traffic delays, but said in the video that those delays did not

materialize.

Tom Heist, the co-chairman organization Bike OCNJ along with Fasy, said in the video that the city underwent extensive discussion about the proposal before agreeing to move forward.

“Really what gave us the confidence was, it was just paint. We said ‘if it doesn’t work, we just scrape it off and start again.’”

Vitamins Help Healing

nyone that knows me, knows that I am a proponent of vitamins. Especially certain vitamins that have anti-inflammatory potential. To take advantage of the possible benefits, you should start by eating foods with these vitamins. If you're overweight a healthy diet can help you drop pounds, which can tame inflammation.

Inside your body, where you can't see it or feel it, ongoing inflammation can trigger heart disease, cancer, diabetes and autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

Keep in mind that more isn't always better. Large amounts of certain vitamins can be risky. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist before you take a supplement.

Let’s start with Vitamin A. It seems to play a role in keeping your immune system from overreacting and causing inflammation. Some studies on beta-carotene point to a slower progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Not getting enough vitamin A may put you at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Foods rich in vitamin A are oranges, vegetables and some fruits -- sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, papaya. Spinach and other dark-green, leafy veggies also have a lot.

Vitamin B6, folate (B9), and B12 can lower your levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that's linked to a greater risk for heart disease and

rheumatoid arthritis. But I can’t say for sure that lowering homocysteine will also lower your risk for disease.

Foods rich in Vitamin B are beef, liver, Fish, red meat, and poultry. Eggs are also good for folate and B12. Fruits and veggies, beans, peas, and nuts will give you B6 and folate. Milk and dairy products will boost your B12.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps get rid of free radicals that can damage cells and tissue, which means fewer triggers for inflammation. Regularly eating a variety of fruits and vegetables , which have antioxidants, can lower your chance of heart disease. But studies on supplements have been back-andforth, with some showing benefits for heart disease and cancer, others not. Foods rich in Vitamin C are Citrus fruits -oranges, grapefruit, tangerines. Bell peppers, broccoli, and brussels sprouts also have high amounts of Vitamin C. Leafy greens and berries are also good sources.

Low Vitamin D levels have been linked to inflammatory diseases including, lupus, IBS and MS . But it's unclear whether raising D levels will stave off these illnesses or prevent some age-related diseases. Only a few foods found in nature contain much vitamin D. Your body makes it when your skin is in sunlight. But it's also in fatty fish, liver, beef, and egg yolks. And it's added to some foods, such as milk. Too much vitamin D can

upset the calcium balance in your body which can affect how certain heart and blood pressure medicines work. Check with your doctor if you take any medicines or have any chronic diseases before taking a supplement.

Vitamin E is another antioxidant that's also an anti-inflammatory.

Some research points to a connection between low levels of Vitamin E and a greater risk of Alzheimer’s disease .

Foods rich in Vitamin E are sunflower seeds, almonds, and other nuts, and oils made from them. You can't go wrong with green, leafy vegetables, either.

Vitamin K lowers levels of inflammation I can’t say we know yet if that also lowers your risk for related diseases.

Foods Rich in Vitamin K are leafy greens, including kale, spinach, collards, and chard. Broccoli and brussels sprouts are very good, too. An important note about Vitamin K is that people who take the blood thinner warfarin or any other blood thinning medication need to eat a light steady amount of vitamin K to make sure their medication keeps working right.

Keep poinsettias looking great through the holidays

long with the fragrant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poinsettias make up a key component of holiday decorating.

Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico.

Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain.

The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts, and the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts.

Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short pe-

riods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts.

Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don't let the plant sit in water. Over- or under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt.

If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom.

The Ohio State University Extension says poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening

expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradually drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape.

Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they flower about 10

weeks after the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less.

Therefore, to have the plant in full flower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the first part of October until Thanksgiving. Many people find the affordability of poinsettias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth.

Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans or animals, but they should not be ingested due to the potential for allergic reactions. Poinsettias can help remove pollutants from indoor air, which is advantageous during the winter months when doors and windows are typically kept closed.

Select plants that have dark green foliage and no low or damaged leaves.

This ensures the best success for keeping poinsettias looking healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season.

Why Shop Local?

ith the holidays around the corners, cars fill the parking lot of most stores as everyone tries to find the best deals.

With this past year being a major hit to many local businesses, it is more important now than ever to shop local.

But what does that really mean? Why is shopping at your local stores so important?

Instead of heading to Walmart and Target for all your shopping try to find small businesses in your community that you can support this year. Many local businesses are having sales, deals, and innovative offerings this year for all your gift giving needs. You may be surprised what our local merchants have for this season, and they are eager to help the community with the struggles of the holidays.

When you shop local you are keeping your money in the local economy, as well as, helping a local business owner take care of their family. Think of every purchase at a local shop going to that family’s contribution to their child’s next football game or ballet lesson. Plus, local businesses offer your neighbors a better chance of a quality job. No corporate mandates and strict corporate rules. Just a family trying to make a business thrive with you and me in mind.

Extra Points with Pete Sports & Entertainment

nyone tired from too much turkey? No, I didn’t fall asleep at work like in the old days (pictured), but I know I’m not alone in 2020 fatigue!

Several folks I talk to have told me they can’t wait for it to be 2021.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles lost their grasp on first place in the NFC East with clunker in front of a national TV audience. The Phillies basically told a lot of long-time employees, “Happy Thanksgiving, you’re fired.”

The Sixers continue to make off-season moves to shape their roster. Plus, they have slipped a neat “Easter egg” into their new uniform design. A veteran Flyers forward is loaned to another team, but that could be bad news. I wasn’t sure whether to put 54-year-old Mike Tyson fighting again under sports or entertainment, so I’ll

classify it as both. Golf gave us another version of “The Match” and with Charles Barkley involved, it did not disappoint! Finally, on the local front, the final high school football rankings are out and a few local teams end up in prestigious spots.

From the entertainment world, I watched a documentary about a comedy legend who died way too soon. Plus, no matter what side of the political aisle you fall on, there’s a new drama on Showtime that you should definitely give a chance. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as I have officially come to the conclusion that they are “broken” on many levels. The Birds lost 23-17 to Seattle on Monday Night Football, but that final score was misleading. The game was essentially over when Carson Wentz threw an ill-timed interception midway through the 3rd quarter. They are now 3-7-1 with games at Green Bay, home with the Saints, at Arizona coming up. They could easily be 3-10-1 by Christmas, with only Dallas and Washington left, and who sees either of those games as winnable at this point?

There’s so much blame to go around, but the “big three” getting the most of it are Doug Pederson, Carson Wentz and Howie Roseman. It’s hard to believe, but just a few seasons removed from holding up the Lombardi Trophy for winning Super Bowl LII, Pederson is reportedly on the “hot seat” as The Eagles head coach. Longtime NFL reporter and ESPN personality Sal Paolantonio told my colleague Mike Gill on 97.3 ESPN, "I don't think he survives a threewin season," said Paolantonio on The Sports Bash program. ”I don’t think he survives a four-win season based on what I'm hearing now."

I’ve written plenty about how Wentz has regressed from his Pro Bowl season of 2017. He simply does NOT look like the same quarterback, but for those of you hoping that the Eagles move on from him, that isn’t happening.

The huge contract extension they gave Wentz last year means they are basically “married” to him win or lose. According to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN, the Eagles are scheduled to incur a nearly $35 million dollar cap hit in 2021 which is not exactly team-friendly as the overall league salary cap is scheduled to go down because of league wide financial losses that are COVID-19 related. In other words, Wentz “ain’t going nowhere!”

So, could they get more talent around him? The easy answer is “sure”, but keep in mind, Howie Roseman was completely in charge of the 2019 draft when the Birds picked J.J. Arcega-Wh-

iteside with the 57th pick overall in the 2nd round. They passed up on picking a receiver from Ole Miss named DK Metcalf, who just TORCHED the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Metcalf caught 10 passes for 177 yards and eight first downs. He was going up against the Eagles best cover defender in Darius Slay and simply owned him.

And Metcalf isn’t the only example of the Eagles passing up on a quality player. Justin Jefferson from the Vikings is having a solid rookie season, while Jalen Raegor for the Eagles has struggled with injury and to solidly establish his footing in the NFL. The bottom line is this, do you trust Roseman anymore to be the guy to draft the right talent around Wentz?

from the wideouts, the Eagles are broken in so many places, I just don’t see them as fixable at this point. Which is sad. I make no secret of the fact that in addition to covering the team on the regular, I am also a lifelong fan. I survived some bad seasons under Marion Campbell back in the day. I endured Rich Kotite and some questionable decisions. I even stayed loyal when Ray Rhodes went 3-13 in 1998 which led to him getting fired and Andy Reid coming in. I will stay strong through this mess. I just hope Jeff Lurie recognizes how bad things have gotten and takes steps to fix it!

Speaking of a Philly team owner, what in the heck is going on with Phillies owner John Middleton lately? How could he think Thanksgiving Eve was the right time to email all the Phillies employees and let 80 of them know that their services were no longer needed?

Marcus Hayes from The Philadelphia Inquirer broke down the math in a recent column pointing out that “the $2 billion franchise and its billionaire ownership group eliminated 80 of its front-office positions — almost 20% of the workforce — to save about $8 million.”

The COVID-19 pandemic and the 60-game season in 2020 have forced several MLB teams to cut staff and issue pay cuts.

The Oakland A’s, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Marlins are all in that situation right now. However, Hayes goes on to break the math down further writing, “reports say the Phillies lost almost $150 million this season. That’s about 4.4% of $3.4 billion. Assume the 80 employees each made a $100,000 salary. (They assuredly did not.)

As I wrote in my last column, the Sixers front office seems to be moving in the right direction with new President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey making moves and reshaping the roster. One item I failed to mention a few weeks back is kind of a fun one. The Sixers are adding a “retro” jersey next season (pictured) that reminds folks of the Allen Iverson days when the team

went to the NBA Finals in 2000.

But did you notice the “Easter egg” within the new design? The sketch on the front of the jersey is supposed to symbolize Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, but a lot of folks quickly spotted that the drawing also included “T-T-P” within it.

Passionate Sixers fans know the phrase “Trust The Process” from the Sam Hinkie days and you have to smile when you realize they probably threw that in on purpose.

Whether it’s intentional or not, I bet it will lead to a lot of retro jersey sales next season!

My lone hockey item is that the Flyers have loaned forward Michael Raffl to Villacher SV, a top professional league in Austria.

The good news about this is that it appears that Raffl’s ankle appears to be feeling better. The bad news about this is it also appears that the NHL season won’t be starting on time. The NHL has previously announced they’d like to start the next season on January 1st, but with the COVID-19 pandemic numbers rising, labor issues continuing with the owners & the players, that January 1st date looks to be in big-time jeopardy.

So, were you one of the many people who ponied up the 50 bucks to watch Mike Tyson fight again?

I can’t remember the last time I ordered something off pay-perview, but I gladly shelled out the money to see what the 54-yearold could do in what was officially classified as a “sparring session” with 51-year-old Roy Jones Jr. My girlfriend’s son is 24, and he never saw Tyson fight during his heyday and subsequent fall from grace.

That’s what made the event the other night so compelling. Tyson has gotten himself back in remarkable shape, and even though they called the event a draw, most folks thought Tyson won. They also blew up social media with how great Snoop Dogg was both as a performer and ringside analyst for the broadcast. I have to admit, I’ve never heard commentary like “this (expletive) like two of my uncles fighting at the BBQ!” The day before the Tyson event, golfers and sports fans were treated to “The Match” part three, as pro golfer Phil Mickelson paired

with NBA legend Charles Barkley to take on retired NFL QB Peyton Manning and current NBA star Stephen Curry in a match-play golf event called “The Match: Champions for Change”. Money raised from the event went toward HBCU colleges, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Barkley kept saying he had been working on his game, and it was evident as the ugly, jarring stop-motion in his swing was magically gone. It didn’t hurt that five-time major championship winner Mickelson was constantly in his ear giving him reassurance and guidance! On the local front, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Holy Spirit Spartans finish as the #2 ranked team in the entire state of New Jersey by NJ.com. Most folks believe there is a North Jersey bias to rankings and lists as it pertains to high school sports, but no one could deny that the Spartans capped off a season for the ages with a 39-0 win on Thanksgiving over Atlantic City. That put Holy Spirit at 8-0 and the number two team in the entire state according to the media outlet. Two other local schools finished in the top 20 as the Ocean City Red Raiders ended up at #17 with a 6-2 record.

Props to Kevin Smith and OCHS for an outstanding season. Finally, St. Joseph in Hammonton won seven of their final eight games en route to a 7-2 record and a #19 ranking from NJ.com. Hey, I wasn’t sure there would be a high school football season at all, so this is all a win as far as I’m concerned!

I’ll close with a two items from entertainment as I caught two documentaries on Showtime on two very different individuals.

Let’s start with the funny / tragic one as I watched “Belushi” the 2020 film / documentary on the late comedic actor John Belushi, who died from a drug overdose in 1982. Two years after his shocking death, author Bob Woodward released a controversial book called “Wired” that focused on the star’s final days. What this new film gets right, in my opinion, is it incorporates letters that Belushi wrote to his wife Judy. These personal notes are read by actor Bill Hader and you can hear Belushi’s pain and anguish in them. The film includes interviews with Dan Akroyd, Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase and others who worked with Belushi. It even has some remarks from his brother Jim, and ends up being a much more personal touch and compelling story than Woodward’s best seller. If you get a chance, and remember how big a star John Belushi once was, check out “Belushi” on Showtime, you will not be disappointed!

Lastly, I mentioned my girlfriend’s son Michael earlier as he is 24-years-old and really awakening to the harsh reality of American

politics. We were both riveted watching the great performances in “The Comey Rule” on Showtime.

Jeff Bridges does an amazing job inhabiting and portraying former FBI director James Comey and his rise and fall at the bureau under first President Obama and then President Trump. Hey, I’ll be the first to tell you this isn’t a fact-forfact film, but rather a portrayal based off Comey’s best-selling book “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership” With Daniels as Comey and standout Brendan Gleeson portraying Trump, this was as good a “fight” as the Tyson event! No matter what side of the political aisle you stand on, I’d highly recommend watching and hopefully enjoying this one.

I’ll close with the reminder to please don’t forget to wear your mask when you are going to interact with others. Be kind, wear your mask, and be patient. There has been some encouraging news recently about a vaccine. Let’s all stay SAFE until one becomes available!

Toys for Kids Program facing high demand due to pandemic

tlantic County Toys for Kids Program has been providing toys to children in our area for over 35 years. The organization was founded by retired Sgt. Greg DePiano who wholeheartedly believes every child should have the opportunity to open a gift on Christmas morning if that’s what their family celebrates.

"More people are struggling this year because of the pandemic. We had to make some hard decisions in order to keep people safe" shared Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program Events Coordinator, Michelle Stella Riordan.

Feed the Birds, Keep the Puffins Away!

f you had snuck a peek into my living room when I was young, you might have seen a little girl dancing around belting out songs from a Mary Poppins record playing “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee”. (Yes, I’m that old.) You may have also heard a mournful tune from that same little girl mistakenly singing the strange line, “Feed the birds, puffins away!”

As you may recall, the poor little old bird woman from the movie selling crumbs for the birds at “tuppence a bag” indirectly plays a big part of the story as Mary Poppins tries to teach her little charges (and Mr. Banks) compassion and charity.

As the second verse goes: “Come feed the little birds, show them you care And you’ll be glad if you do Their young ones are hungry

Their nests are so bare All it takes is a tuppence from you…

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag” Well, unless you are actually using bags of crumbs, birdseed these days costs a bit more than two pence. But watching these little winged-friends visit your backyard and feeder can be very rewarding indeed. During the winter, they are eager for a little generosity, since fruit and seeds aren’t as plentiful as in spring and summer.

While a bag of mixed wild bird seed can attract a variety of birds, I find that they are often packed with fillers like corn and millet. These can be wasteful and attract bully black birds like starlings and grackles.

Those types of birds take over and scare the songbirds away. Instead,

finches also enjoy sunflower seeds and pulling the thistle-like seeds from my coneflowers and hanging out on my verbena bonariensis. As the days grow colder, you may think that your goldfinch friends have migrated. They are still around, but donning their dull winter plumage and travelling incognito.

Safflower is another type of birdseed that I enjoy using for various reasons. These seeds attract chickadees, cardinals, titmice, nuthatches, finches, blue jays, and woodpeckers.

But what I really love about safflower is that squirrels don’t like it. Squirrels

are my bane in the garden and I really enjoy being able to hang a feeder on a hook right outside my window without fear of those rascals trashing it. When I use anything that squirrels like (sunflower seeds, suet, nuts, etc.), I must go through physical and mental acrobatics to keep this seed out of reach. So, having an alternative that appeals to so many songbirds makes me quite happy. Just be careful to avoid the mistake that I made. Once, I grabbed a bag of hulled sunflower seeds (they look very much like safflower seeds). I absent-mindedly filled my vulnerable feeder and within hours, the squirrels had demolished yet another feeder. If I could write the lyrics to that Mary Poppins song today, they would go, “feed the birds, squirrels away!”

Common Baking Mistakes to Avoid

here is nothing worse than baking close to one hundred cookies only to find them ruined. Over the years I have found out the hard way about baking mistakes. The good news is that I have learned from them.

If you have cookie swap baking in your future, make sure to read this carefully so you don’t find yourself making a last minute run to ShopRite and trying to pass off their cookies as your own (I swear, I have never done this).

We have moved many times over the years and after my coffee pot, the next thing I always unpack is my oven thermometer. Do not rely on your oven to tell you when it’s preheated. A difference of fifty degrees can make or break baked goods like bread, cake and cookies. You can buy a reliable oven thermometer for less than $10, well worth the investment. ommend rotating the pans halfway through the baking process. Ovens can have hotter spots than others so this is highly recommended.

If there is one thing that kids leave my cooking classes knowing, it’s how to level a cup of flour. If you aren’t sure what this means, read on! You do not want to pack down the flour. I suggest using a scoop to gently fill the measuring cup with flour and then use the back of a knife to remove the excess flour. Two cups means two cups and if you pack down the flour, you will not be adding the accurate amount. While we are on the subject of flour, making sure you are using the right flour. There are big differences between whole wheat, all-purpose and bread flour.

If you are planning to make a recipe, check to see that you have all the ingredients and equally important, that the ingredients are not expired.

If you don’t plan to use the big bag

of baking soda in a relatively short amount of time, buy a smaller bag! If you are doubling a recipe, make sure that you have the correct amount of eggs and butter. It’s no fun getting halfway through mixing ingredients only to find out that you are short two eggs.

Butter is one of the trickiest ingredients to work with in my opinion and getting it softened to perfection comes with experience. If a recipe calls for softened butter, make sure to leave it at room temperature for about an hour. If you are making pie crust or cookies that calls for chilling the dough, do not try to skip this step. If you have ever tried to roll out dough for gingerbread cookies that hasn’t been chilled, you know it will be impossible to hold together.

Here are some other tips that are equally important as those already mentioned. Don’t overcrowd your pan. Allow space for your cookies to spread during baking. Use the right baking pan or dish. For pies, I prefer glass to ceramic baking dishes. I find it cooks more evenly. Invest in some cooling racks. When you first remove cookies, brownies or cupcakes from the oven, let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before removing them to a cooling rack. Always let the baked goods cool completely before placing them in an enclosed container.

Baking is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season. Eliminate stress by planning ahead to make sure you have the right ingredients, they are fresh and you have all the necessary kitchen tools. Cookies bring a smile to everyone’s face at holiday season so brighten up someone’s day with a batch!

CRANBERRY OATMEAL BARS

You start by mixing together the dry ingredients of flour, oats and spices. To that you add melted butter and fresh squeezed orange juice. My mini chefs love squeezing juice out of citrus fruits. My kids received these adorable mini chef jackets as gifts from their grandparents and when I told my told daughter it was time for Mini Chef Mondays, she ran to get hers. Looking for a cute gift for the holidays? My kids love their chef coats.

For the filling you mix together cranberries, sour cream, vanilla extract, orange rind, and an egg white.

You add that on top of the crust and then top it with some reserved oat topping. Cook that for about 40 minutes and then cut it into bars. My kids love this as dessert but I love one of these bars in the afternoon with tea.

Either way, these bars are the perfect amount of sweetness and are so easy to whip up.

Ingredients ● Crust ● 1 cup all purpose flour ● 1 cup quick-cooking oats ● 1/4 cup light brown sugar ● 1/4 teaspoon salt ● 1/4 teaspoon baking soda ● 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions Preheat oven to 325. To prepare crust combine flour through cinnamon in a medium bowl and whisk together. Add melted butter and orange juice. Stir until moistened. Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture. Pour the rest into a greased 8X8 baking pan coated in cooking spray.

To prepare filling combine cranberries through egg white in a medium bowl. Spread in pan on top of oat mixture. Using hands, crumble reserved oat mixture on top. Bake for 40 minutes until edges are golden. When completely cool, cut into bars.

Shore Mall Memories

t was Christmas time and this was the place to be. Music chimed through the department stores and smaller shops.

Teenagers swarmed around Sound Odyssey record store and Space Port arcade. Moms and their young kids waited in anticipation to sit on Santa’s lap at his North Pole wonderland. Radio Shack, Lamplighter Gift Shoppe and Allens Shoes served a steady crowd of shoppers. Many older folks strolled Steinbachs, with its beauty salon and restaurant which overlooked the back of the mall, where an Orange Julius and Beachcomber

Collectibles stood. Just about everything could be found here. Outside was a drive in theater, a grocery store, and a tavern. Inside, young ladies shopped designer fashions at Jeans Emporium and Tres Chic. The mall was buzzing when Donna Sommers bought her disco wardrobe there.

The year was 1978 and the place was the Shore Mall.

Shore Mall opened ten years earilier as an open-air mall called Searstown. The anchor stores were Sears, Grant City and a Pantry Pride supermarket. Between 1971 and 1974, the mall was enclosed and expanded, with Steinbach, an up-scale department store added as a fourth anchor

store. Grant City was shuttered in 1976 when the chain declared bankruptcy but JCPenney soon took over the space. Pantry Pride supermarket was replaced with Foodtown, and the mall was renamed Shore Mall.

The Hamilton Mall opened in 1987, just five miles west on the same road.

This newer, larger two- story complex drew thousands of former shoppers and lured national retailers. Sears and JCPenney moved there right away. With the two Anchors gone, Shore Mall underwent renovations enclosing the still open-air portion between the two anchors as well as re-tiling the mall to a blue and white color scheme.

In 1988 Clover, a discount chain in the former JCPenney/Grant City space, while Boscov’s replaced the

former Sears. Boscov’s opened to much fanfare. It was (and still is) one of their best performing stores. Circuit City opened in the former Foodtown, which closed in the early 1990s. Steinbach went out of business in 1995 but was replaced in 1996 with Value City Department Store. Clover closed in 1997 when that chain also faced closure by its parent company, becoming Burlington Coat Factory a year later.

The Circuit City’s location at front right side of the mall was replaced with a K&G Fashion Superstore in 2006. It is now rented seasonally by The Spirit Halloween Costume Store.

In January 2006, The Shore Mall was to Cedar Shopping Centers for $36.5 million. Their initial plan was to “demall” the mall converting it into an Open-Air Plaza.

In 2010, Cedar Shopping Centers received a $41 million state grant be used to help finance an $87 million dollar revamp of the mall. The plan called for demolishing most of the mall (except Boscov’s, the former Burlington Coat Factory, and nearly everything that can be seen from the Black Horse Pike) and converting the site to a strip mall with four additional large stores. It also included $23 million for transportation upgrades such as a reconfiguration of Exit 36 of the Garden State Parkway, an intersection between West Jersey Avenue and the Black Horse Pike.

A time capsule was buried next to the Steinbach store to be opened

100 years later on March 20, 2074.

It was dug up in a small ceremony in 2013 due to the mall’s demolition. The plaque and contents of the capsule were given to the Egg Harbor Township Historical Society.

Inside the capsule were clothes from Steinbach’s department store, a reelto-reel film, copies of several local newspapers and fashion magazines.

Meet the Band: Ill Rendition Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

I

ll Rendition are a three-piece ska/rock/reggae band straight out of Atlantic City, composed of Christian Glomb (vocals and guitar), Connor Petras (bass), and Dave Freeman (drums). The band formed in 2009 with several changes to the line-up over the years, but Glomb has been the one constant.

I got to have a conversation with Glomb about what it was like to share the stage with some of the biggest names in music, their on-stage presence; and their mascot, hype man, and animated fourth member, Gill Rendition.

Ill Rendition have been fortunate enough to share the stage with some incredible artists including John Mayer, Pepper, and Bumpin Uglies.

However, one artist stuck out with the most because not only did they share the stage with them, but they

also got to perform with them. “It’s been incredible getting to play shows with people we looked up to so much.

I think one of the coolest ones was a festival we played out in Maryland, and Kash’d Out was the headliner.

We looked over and Greg [Shields] hopped on stage and sang a chorus and a verse with us which was kind of a cool thing” said Glomb.

Unfortunately, the band was perhaps one of the first bands to feel the impact of COVID-19, as a scheduled show supporting Glomb’s favorite band, Ballyhoo, was set for the day

lockdown was announced. However, fans will be pleased to know that Glomb sounded hopeful that this would be rescheduled, and for now, live streams are the best way to catch these guys live. Many artists have taken to live streaming as it is easy to set up your phone and you’re good to go.

This was not quite good enough for Ill Rendition, and they wanted to bring their fans the ultimate live streaming experience. They linked up with an old high school friend of Glomb’s, Jason Spatz, who was well versed in the visual side of music production, to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience for their fans and ensure there was still amazing graphics to go alongside their awesome sound.

This was important to the band as they are well known for their live performances.

Everyone who I have spoken to

about Il Rendition has assured me that seeing them live should be on my bucket-list. Although sadly I won’t be able to in the near future, I was curious to know how they got this commendable reputation. “I think it is just the energy. We get so into it feeding off the people being there” explained Glomb. Their on-stage presence is a huge draw for many fans as they like to rip into each other, and the banter does not stop flowing for the entire show. This is something I am sure their fans are looking forward to when they can perform live again.

One of many admirable traits of the band is their dedication to worthy causes, the dearest to their heart being Elephants for Autism. EFA are a New Jersey based annual festival started by Jerry Ryan which seeks to raise money for charities supporting people with autism. It is a festival that

Ill Rendition have participated in for several years and is a way they are able to give something back for the kids in the area.

Although the band comprises three music playing members, there is one additional member that fans will be familiar with – Gill Rendition. Hype man, mascot, loveable animation. Gill covers all bases but is best described as the “personified version of the band." Glomb explained that Gill is kind of like the band’s alter ego and was created to give their fans someone to connect with. “We wanted people to catch a vibe from us without putting our images all over everything,” Glomb

chuckled. For anyone curious what that vibe is, Gill is an alien riding a slice of pizza – a vibe I am sure we can all get on board with.

Currently, the band is working on two albums. The first is an album of covers which pokes fun at the name

of the band. What started off as something of a joke, turned into the guys deciding that an album of covers would be a great project for them to work on. They have been tirelessly plugging away selecting songs to cover and apply their own sound to. The other album is a mix of original content and some cherry-picked singles from previous records which they have since decided they can improve. The addition of bassist Connor inspired the guys to re-record some of their old stuff and tweak it. These albums are expected to be released in early 2021.

In terms of seeing Ill Rendition live right now, like many bands they are

strictly adhering to COVID protocols and have decided to put the safety of their fans and family first. That being said, they are planning to get back into live streaming soon. y hope is that you are finding time to take a deep breath through this holiday season, even if just for a moment or two.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with meditation coach, Berni Kozlowski who offered some meditation words of wisdom for mothers.

5 Tips from Berni K: 1. Give yourself permission to rest. We often glorify working hard from sun up to sun down without ever taking a moment to ourselves. The saying, "a mother's work is never done" is more true now than ever. The world around us typically won't invite us to settle into rest so we must invite ourselves. We have to break free from the notion that it all has to get done today and instead, give ourselves permission to take a timeout or two.

2. Find something to rest with that you love. People often look at mediation as a chore or something else to work at but if your body knows what to do, it’s a more natural experience. Create meditative moments for yourself whether it is over a cup of tea, a few extra moments in the shower, or laying in the grass listening to nature.

3. Drop any rules about what meditation might be. If you’re struggling in your meditation practice, ask yourself what rule you’re trying to follow that simply isn't working for you. If it doesn’t work, throw it out. Many people believe that meditation has to happen in a seated position on the floor, however if your body is resisting against that position, throw out the idea and create a meditation flow that works for you. Consider going for a walk or laying down instead. The idea isn't that you fit some meditative mold, rather that

you take the time to breathe and let go.

4. Practice opening your senses.

Feel the touch of wind on your face, take time to notice the sight of the sun setting. The next time you walk into your favorite bakery, notice the aromas for a minute longer. Take time to savor the little moments and things that you enjoy in life. Consider the question, "what about my senses would nourish me right now?"

Ask yourself open ended questions like, "what would you love to spend time with right now as your meditation tool?" Senses are your natural pathway to healing and relaxation.

5. Practice breathing through your nose. A lot of people tend to be mouth breathers. Breathing through your nose triggers the relaxation response in the body.

Breathing through your mouth tends to dehydrate you more and creates more work for your body.

Nose breathing stimulates deeper breathing and triggers your brain to relax.

However you choose to meditate, whether it is for one minute or thirty, make sure to take time to breathe your way through the rest of 2020. We've had a rough go of it. The least we can do for ourselves is treat our minds and bodies with kindness.

The Community FoodBank Counting on ACUA Food Drive to Help Meet the Needs of Those Struggling this Holiday Season

Food drive kicks off on Monday, December 7 and runs through Friday, December 18

B

eginning Monday, December 7 and continuing through Friday, December 18, Atlantic County residents are urged to place non-perishable food items at the curb on their recycling collection day as part of the 30th annual Holiday Food Drive.

Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) recycling crews will collect the food in conjunction with regularly scheduled recycling pick-ups.

Sponsored by ACUA, the Holiday Food Drive gives residents an easy and convenient way to help the needy while helping the environment. All food collected through the Holiday Food Drive will be distributed through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey Egg Harbor Township which provides the donated food to more than 250 partner agencies for distribution to those less fortunate throughout Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties.

These charities include emergency food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other charitable feeding programs.

"The Community FoodBank of New Jersey-Egg Harbor Township is grateful for our continued partnership with the ACUA as this year's food drive comes at a critical time. The food collected during this annual drive reflects the generosity of our community and provides essential nutrition to our neighbors in need," noted Denise Hladun, Director of External Affairs for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

The Community FoodBank is looking for donations of food items, especially

canned tuna and meats, hearty soups, meals in a can and peanut butter. Please do not include perishable or frozen items or food in glass jars.

“Because of COVID-related hardships, Atlantic County is on track to be the most food insecure county in New Jersey,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “ACUA’s food drive provides an easy way for people to donate when they put their recycling out.

There are over 200,000 people in the Community FoodBank of New Jersey Egg Harbor Township’s service area who rely on the Food Bank and we truly need as many residents as possible to donate to this year’s effort,” Dovey added.

Last year, residents donated 21,506 pounds of non-perishable food items. “Our goal is to exceed last year’s total and we are always encouraged by the generosity of Atlantic County residents,” said Dovey.

To participate, just fill any bag or box with your donation and leave at the curb on your recycling day between December 7 and December 18.

Atlantic County residents not serviced through the ACUA curbside recycling program can participate by bringing their donations to the ACUA at 6700 Delilah Rd., or to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey Egg Harbor Township at 6735 Horse Pike, Egg Harbor Township.

How to know if you are working out hard enough

any people now have either watches or exercise equipment that tells them what their heart rate is. If not, we simply use our pulse rate and/or the rate of perceived exertion. The latter simply means, “the talk test!” Yoga or walking raises our heart rate a little but a Spin or HIIT(high intensity interval training) takes our heart rates to new levels.

When most of us start high-intensity interval training (HIIT), we're not too worried about achieving the ideal heart rate for HIIT, we're just focused on making it through the workout without passing out! However, once you've made your peace with these short and sweaty workouts, it's a good idea to try to get your heart rate in the ideal zone for HIIT. The power of HIIT rests in its ability to help your body burn more fat, build more muscle, and increase cardiovascular health in as little as ten to 30 minutes a day. HIIT uses short periods of work (intervals of 50 seconds) followed by short periods of rest (10 seconds) to push your body into its anaerobic zone, which is where it uses fat as fuel instead of glucose and glycogen. You don't need to workout long, you just need to workout hard. There it is, you need to workout, hard. HIIT workouts aren't going to be a rambling walk in the park. More like a short, panting sprint up a mountain. You want to challenge your body which will increase your heart rate. The easiest and equally accurate way to monitor your HIIT heart rate is as simple as talking. Or trying to. HIIT requires that your heart rate be at 80-90% of your max heart rate for the duration of the working parts (the interval) of your workout which is that 50 second interval. 100% of your effort would be something you could only sustain for a few seconds and it’s just not necessary.

I know I’m saying to work harder but in terms of HIIT, to achieve these goals, you need to work smarter not harder if short workouts with major fat burning potential is your goal. You will know you've reached this threshold if you have difficulty finishing a simple sentence. I know when I’m teaching Spin class that I’m in that zone when I can’t sing any longer to my playlist.

These numbers can be useful for the general population and as guidelines, but at the end of the day, you are your own best gauge. So, take the talk test to check your heart rate for HIIT. If you can spout off a sentence, no problem, then it's time to push harder. But if you are huffing and puffing and can barely utter a syllable, you're in the zone.
