O

ne of the things I like the most about my job as Marketing Director for Shore Medical Center is being around those whose mission in life is to help others. We all share in the same mission, whether it is in the form for heroic doctor or nurse healing and caring for a patient, or it is a member of our human resources team helping their fellow employees understand their benefits.

When I learned of an opportunity to represent our hospital on the Board of Somers Point Business Association, I jumped at the chance because I wanted to do my part, and in the spirit of Shore’s mission, help those in the local community.

My fellow SBPA Board members are all volunteers with one goal in mind: To promote, protect, and support the development of a strong business environment in Somers Point and the surrounding communities.

The message of the SPBA’s 2020 campaign was simple, but strong – Support Local.

Logos and ads were designed with variations of this theme including Shop Local, Party Local, and Eat Local. We had our speaker events and networking mixers to complement this message all set and ready to go…and then the pandemic hit.

Rather than fold up our promotional tent, SPBA President Chuck Westcott led our efforts to adapt the campaign to the times, and promoted safety and guidelines to the public so that businesses could continue to generate income during these difficult times.

Chuck also connected with a variety of agencies to find out what grants and assistance was available for small businesses in our area who were financially hit by the pandemic and then share the information via Facebook and email. The SPBA encouraged members to share their deals on its Facebook page and it even opened this forum to local schools and organizations to share their messaging as well. The SPBA Facebook page became, and is now, a trusted and valued hub of information for the community, we are very proud of that.

Realizing the severe impact that COVID-19 has had on restaurants, retail, and many other businesses, the SPBA also decided that members who paid for annual membership in 2020 will not be charged for membership dues in 2021.

“Our core mission is to support our member businesses, so we have decided to provide some relief by waiving membership next year for our current members,” said Chuck Westcott, President of the Somers

T

he holiday shopping season has officially arrived. The signs, ads and deals are everywhere. We are bound to see plenty of offers that seem too good to pass up. You will see them on your TV, phone and computer screens.

Please consider who you are giving your hard-earned money to. As a small business owner, I ask that you keep your dollars here in the community.

Let's help our locally owned businesses out this holiday season. This year specifically has been brutal for small businesses in our area. Local retailers were forced to close for months while their large corporate counterparts enjoyed higher than ever sales.

When retail and restaurants were eventually permitted to open, they were limited to only a small percentage of their capacity. I realize public health safety is top priority and the pandem-

ic has created unique challenges we never faced before. However, our area businesses owners are smart! If they were given an equal opportunity, they would have adjusted and created systems and spaces to keep their clientele safe. 2020 is what it is. We've all been beaten up. But like football coach Vince Lombardi said, "It's not about how many times you get knocked down. It's about how many times you get up." The ability to recover from defeat is more telling about your character than the reason you were knocked down.

You may have seen the recent news report revealing that Atlantic County had both the highest unemployment and food insecurity rate in the nation this past June. While very alarming, it’s not surprising given how hard the gaming, hospitality and tourism industry has been hit by the pandemic.

businesses. Another important aspect that often gets overlooked is how much of your hard-earned money stays in your hometown. When you buy from a local store, a higher percentage of that money stays in your local community. For every $100 spent, $68 stays in the local economy. That is compared to $43 when spent at big box stores.

Additionally, “Mom-and-pop” shops often provide personal one-of-a-kind products and resources you may not find anywhere else. The Jersey Shore has a distinct charm and vibe of its own. Let's make our choices support that. If you have a question or special request for a small business, these folks are happy to help. If you have ever asked for assistance at Walmart, you know the difference. It is also the local businesses that support our community in giving back. Did you ever see a big box store name on the back of a kid's sports jersey? Nope. It’s the local businesses that support and invest in our community.

This Saturday, November 30th, many small stores and family-run shops will be participating in Small Business Saturday. This nationwide movement was launched by American Express nearly a decade ago as an alternative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In the years since, communities have stepped in to show their support for and patronize brick and mortar retailers. There is no need to limit Small Business Saturday to just one day.

It may seem easiest, even safest to order from Amazon, but I implore you to investigate. Many small businesses now have online shopping, curbside pick-up and delivery. We encourage you to think local first. Support the makers, the chefs, the artists, the entrepreneurs that have been and always will be the fabric of our communities.

This holiday season, pandemic or no pandemic, let's support one another, choose happiness, choose joy and choose gratitude .

A Forecast of Gratitude Weather

ure, it's 2020, and most of us will be thankful simply if we make it through this long and tumultuous year. Meteorologically speaking, there is plenty to be thankful for as we head through the final six weeks of the year. I'd be thankful if you afford me the opportunity to elaborate: ● I'm thankful that after almost 200 days and a record breaking 30 named storms and 12 landfalling tropical systems in the United States this year, the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season appears to finally be over. Officially, the season concludes on November 30th. ● I'm thankful that of all those storms, only one, Isaias, had a significant impact on our weather when it shot up the East Coast in early August with strong winds and even a few South Jersey tornadoes. The Gulf of Mexico was the focus for most of the activity this year, with Louisiana alone seeing three landfalling hurricanes. Sure, we did see some rain from a weak land-

falling Tropical Storm Fay in July, and remnant rains from some of the Gulf hurricanes as well. But the East Coast certainly made out better than the Gulf Coast.

I'm thankful that it's now almost 180 days before we have to worry about any tropical development. And I'm also thankful that we can hopefully put away the Greek alphabet for a while. Next year's list begins with the names Ana, Bill, Claudette, and Danny.

I'm thankful that it's been a quiet start to the coastal storm season this fall. The unofficial Nor'easter season runs from late October through mid-March. Here's hoping our luck continues to hold.

I'm thankful that this year's Thanksgiving Day forecast looks to be a mild one, with highs around 60 degrees expected. While many dream of a white Christmas, a white Thanksgiving is usually not as high on many wish lists.

It is technically possible though, as a Thanksgiving Day snowstorm in 1989 gave snow lovers a timely reason to say thanks. But it's certainly rare.

As a snow lover myself, I'm always thankful for at least the chance of a white Christmas. It's a tall order in South Jersey, with about a 7 percent chance of late. But at least I'm saying there's a chance.

Those that despise snow can be thankful for the essentially snowless winter of 2019-2020 that started this year.

Remember this year began with one of the least snowy winters on record in South Jersey, with not even an inch of snow falling the entire winter.

We can all be thankful that after perhaps the wildest 7 year stretch of weather in recent memory from 2009 through 2016, the big ticket storms have been few and far between in the four years since. During that incredibly active stretch, we saw three blizzards in just over a year, two hurricanes(Irene and Sandy), one powerful Nor'easter (Jonas), and let's not forget the derecho, just to name a few. There were also the record hot back-to-back summers of 2010 and 2011, with record 105-degree high temperatures.

I'm thankful, and always amazed at, how weather forecasts continue to improve with each year. Warning time ahead of hurricanes can be days in advance, and severe thunderstorm alert time continues to increase as well.

And for those times that Mother Nature does her own thing and surprises meteorologists and the viewing public alike, I'm thankful for the continued patience and understanding for those that try to figure out the "inexact" science of meteorology.

Personally, I'm thankful to have the continued opportunity to forecast South Jersey weather for the last 17 years, and for Shore Local for allowing me to continue that opportunity. I continue to learn, to occasionally be humbled, and to strive for the best possible forecast.

I'm so fortunate to have a job that I love in a field that I became fascinated with at just nine years old. And I'm thankful that passion still burns strong today.

I'm thankful I've officially given up long range winter forecasts. As I wrote about in previous columns, I think they aren't worth the time and effort, not to mention accuracy issues. ● I'm thankful that the sunsets will start growing later by mid-December, as the early darkness can be a little depressing for most. The sun sets at 4:34pm in Atlantic City from November 30th through December 13th, but will start growing later thereafter, albeit painstakingly slowly. Granted, the sunrises continue to grow later through early January. ● I'm thankful that for the first time since I was in college (in the late 1990s), I have four days off at Christmas this year.

Perhaps we're finally due for that long overdue white Christmas? Working in the broadcasting industry, it's almost a given that I'm working Thanksgiving or Christmas (or both) any given year. In fact, I've worked 19 of the last 20 Christmas Days. But now with a precious 20 month old daughter I couldn't be more thankful for, here's hoping the forecast calls for more Christmas Days off in the near future.

A 2020 Christmas Experience at Forever Forest

T

he magic of the holiday season may be the one thing that will hold us all together this year. So many families have begun hanging their decorations earlier than usual and welcoming in some Christmas joy. Even the local radio stations have started to bless our days with 24/7 Christmas tunes.

As with almost everything else, 2020 has brought some unexpected change to our favorite South Jersey Christmas experiences. That hasn’t stopped Forever Forest from delivering Christmas cheer for all to hear.

The story of Forever Forest began when Emilio Polito and his three brothers were young boys. Their grandparents told them the story every year of Master Elf Mancini Manchester, who just so happened to be a friend of the family. Every Christmas Eve, they’d get a knock on the door

from Mancini reminding them of their especially close connection to good ol’ St. Nick.

Since then, the story has evolved and grown to become a full-blown Christmas wonderland located on Breman Avenue in Egg Harbor City. Owned and operated by the Polito family including Emilio, his wife Donna, and his children, the Forever Forest is pure Christmas magic for Christmas lovers of all ages.

This year, with full expectations to be shut down due to Covid-19, the Polito family began planning for a virtual event. They built out a fully interactive platform that would give kids and families an experience just like they were at the farm.

Knowing that many families would not be able to visit Santa at the mall this year, the Politos wanted to make sure kids still had the opportunity to chat with the jolly old fellow.

The virtual platform offers parents the opportunity to input information about their children including their siblings, favorite colors and toys, and family members so the kids get a personalized experience with Mr. Clause. Not only do they get one-onone visits with Santa Clause, they also

get a photo souvenir and video copy of their experience.

While they wait for their allotted time frame, there is more Christmas fun to be had. Virtual attendees can take a tour through the walking trail and aboard the hayride, as they discover Santa’s workshop. Once inside Santa’s workshop, they are able to see behind the scenes footage of what happens at The North Pole.

You won’t want to miss the lineup of entertainment happening this season at Forever Forest. A full Christmas-themed magic show featuring Nate Unsworth is scheduled as he brings the magic of Christmas alive and welcomes Santa to the forest.

Of course, the Polito family did not want to leave out the true meaning of Christmas. This year, you can enjoy a children’s concert lineup of uplifting songs as they sing of joy, hope, and the story of Jesus.

While the virtual experience covers every detail and gives children a unique Christmas 2020 experience, many families still wanted to attend in person. So, Forever Forest has decided to open its doors with reduced hours and limited capacity.

They have also tailored in-person events to mostly outdoors. This year, if you attend the virtual event, you can visit the Forever Forest location in Egg Harbor City for free with your voucher. The in-person event will feature eight different fire pits, marshmallow roasting, a hayride, and more.

Longing for Thanksgiving Leftovers

ou spend so long preparing for Thanksgiving dinner and then it is over in the blink of an eye. After everyone’s tummies are full and the dishes are done, you might find yourself wondering why you prepared so much food. If that sounds familiar, here are some ideas of what to do with all of those leftovers, which are too good to go to waste!

If you still have a lot of turkey left over, there are so many creative ways you can use it. If you are tired of cooking and are not interested in getting creative right away, you can freeze the turkey and then defrost it when

you are in the mood to try some of these ideas.

Before my husband gave up meat, his absolute favorite sandwich any time of the year was the Thanksgiving sandwich. Pile some turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing on a sandwich and dig in. Add some lettuce for crunch and you will have the perfect lunch.

Turkey is great in soups, quesadillas, pot pies and other dishes like turkey tetrazzini and turkey fried rice. I’m a big fan of paninis because really what doesn’t taste good between two slices of grilled bread?

Add some stuffing and cheese to the bread, along with the turkey and grill it on a panini maker or in a pan.

Do you have a bunch of leftover roasted vegetables? The possibilities with these are endless. How about making a roasted vegetable pizza?

Frittatas are so easy and a great way to use roasted vegetables. You can also make your frittata using mashed potatoes as a base on the bottom of the pan, before adding the eggs and vegetables. It’s like dinner for breakfast!

So, you made too much mashed potatoes, now what? Make mashed potato cakes! This idea comes from my friend Sue Malat at Elev8 Your Plate. Add a couple of eggs to a bowl of mashed potatoes, chopped onion, cheddar cheese and scallions. You

don’t need much in the way of seasonings since the mashed potatoes are already seasoned. Drop about ¼ cup of the mixture into a pan with heated oil. Fry them for about four minutes per side and top them with sour cream. Brilliant! If you celebrate Hanukah and are looking for a new twist on potato latkes, this would be fun to try!

Quesadillas are another one of my go-to easy meals. If you have a bunch of left over cooked sweet potatoes, quesadillas are a great way to use them up.

Once the sweet potatoes are cooled, scoop out the insides and combine them with black beans, lime juice and seasonings like cumin, salt and pepper. Add the mixture along with cheese to a tortilla, fold it over and cook it for about three minutes on each side.

Serve them with guacamole for a quick and easy dinner or lunch. This is a recipe that I love not just at the

Holiday Light Show on the Lake ▶Thursday-Sunday

ratitude and giving are ideals that we try to instill in our children year ‘round but the holiday season always brings these concepts front and center. As we kick-off the 2020 holidays this week, I have been looking for fresh ideas for showing gratitude as well as giving back. Here are just a few ideas that I found and wanted to pass along.

Gratitude Bracelets Gratitude bracelets are a creative way to express what we are thankful for with elementary-aged children. A friend of mine offered me this idea including a list of unique fill-in-theblank questions. You will need five small beads and pipe cleaners or ribbon.

Gratitude Stones Select stones from outside or grab some craft stones, collect your paints and, and get crafty. As you decorate these stones with your family, discuss things that you are thankful for and use symbols that represent those things on your stones. Once the stones are dry, place them around the house, in your car, at your desk, in the shower, or anywhere that you can think of. Throughout your days, as you see the stones, use them as a mental reminder to pause for a deep breath of gratitude.

Gratitude Conversation Starters Conversation starters are a great way to get more reserved children to open up or to dive deeper than simply making a list of things you’re thankful for. Make a jar of conversation starters for your home and invite anyone

in the family to grab one at any time.

Here are some conversation starters to get you started. A simple google search will offer you more ideas. ● What do you love about your home? Why? ● What was your favorite part about today? ● Who makes you smile? ● What positive adjectives could you use to describe your sibling? Yourself? ● Who is the person that you trust the most? ● What is your favorite toy? Why? ● What was the best thing to happen to you this year? ● What are you looking forward to? ● What changes have you been through lately? ● Has something happened in your life that you expected to be bad but was actually good?

Giving Ideas As we reinforce the beautiful gift of giving to others, this is a great opportunity to show our kids that everyone feels and expresses love differently. Many families have physical needs right now such as food and Christmas gifts for their children.

However, giving does not always have to come in the form of tangible items.

Many people need a simple phone call or a card that says, “I love you” or “I care about you.” If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that human connection is the best gift of all.

Check on your elderly friends and family members. The joy of a child’s

laughter or smile might be exactly what they need this holiday season.

Have your children make cards and drop them off with a socially distant wave. Take it a step further by having the children make cards for strangers in nursing homes or hospitals.

These simple acts of love go further than you might think. Who doesn’t need an extra dose of love this holiday season?

Clean up a local park. This act of service requires nothing but your time and energy.

Pick out a local park or neighborhood, grab a trash bag and some gloves and straighten it up as a gift to your community and to yourself. It feels good to do good.

Don’t forget the animals! Spend some time gathering old blankets and towels then donate them to the local animal shelter. If you have the resources to do so, consider donating a bag of dog or cat food as well.

Of course, there are countless ways to give and give thanks this holiday season that do not require a lot of money, only a little effort and an extra dose of love.

Most of all, treat each other with kindness. We all need more of it this year!

Buried Treasure in the Garden

A

s the elderly woman lay dying, surrounded by her adult children, she assured them of her love, and implored them to embrace the greater things in life. They were all “successful” by the world’s standards and lacked for nothing monetarily.

She had raised them with an appreciation of family, generosity, and love for God. But she wondered if they took time to look around and breathe in the life around them. She had a love of nature and gardening and had spent many happy hours digging in the dirt. They couldn’t really relate. As they sat by her side, some of her last words to them were, “Don’t forget about the buried treasure in the garden.” They were taken aback. Their mother had lived modestly and seemingly comfortably, but they didn’t truly know her financial situation. She

had worked in a bank in her younger days, and perhaps had developed a mistrust of putting “all your eggs in one basket." Had she lost her sense in her later years and decided to use the garden as a safe deposit box? It was a delicate situation, and there were so many other things to discuss.

Of course, we always think we will have more time, but alas…

Well, as events took place and accounts were settled, the children went back to their busy lives. They couldn’t bring themselves to part with the seaside family home and decided to keep it among themselves as a summer retreat. Eventually the older children discussed their mother’s cryptic last words and wondered if she was hinting to family jewels that she had wanted to pass down to them. They remembered a story she had told them about a friend losing a sapphire in her garden that was never found. But they hadn’t really been paying attention, even though they had possibly heard the story a dozen times. Perhaps, the “friend” she was talking about was actually her? After all, sapphires were her favorite gemstones. Now they felt a twinge of guilt for rolling their eyes back then, and longed to hear those

stories again in her own voice. They decided to spend a weekend at the old house. Both of them could use a break from their jobs, and the salt air would do them good; they could invite their little brother and make it a family reunion.

Apparently, gardens need a little maintenance. The siblings were disturbed to see things overgrown and though their mother’s garden was never considered immaculate, it had been perfect in its own way.

Out of respect, they decided to at least make things a little tidier. After breakfast, the older children trimmed the bushes and roses and realized why their mom always had cuts and scratches on her hands. Some of those thorns are huge! Hopefully, they weren’t cutting off next year’s blooms, but they didn’t know much about pruning plants. They wanted to pull out some weeds, but remembered how irritated their mother had become when new owners took over

a garden and pulled out seemingly lifeless vines that would have sprouted stunning clematis flowers in the spring. They leafed through some of her old gardening books and learned a little bit about weeds (which are simply plants that are misplaced). It was rather gratifying to grab a weed by the base and feel the entire plant release from the soil, root and all.

Although they didn’t normally like getting their hands so dirty, there was something comforting about touching the same earth their mother had so lovingly cultivated. Remembering her talk about buried treasure, they grabbed the old shovel from the shed and decided to dig a couple of holes for fun. The spade glided through the sandy soil, and it felt good to do some manual labor. Thirty holes later, the only loot they uncovered was some old gardening tags, a bunch of nerf gun bullets, the spoon that had always been missing from the set, and various types of strange-looking heads of garlic. So much for buried riches. Why hadn’t she at least left them a treasure map?

Just as they were breaking for lunch, their younger brother arrived to join them. He had left early in the morning to revisit some of his old fishing haunts that had obsessed him as a child. Peeking out the dining room window, all he saw were holes

all over his mother’s garden along with mounds of displaced soil. “So what have you guys been up to this morning?� he asked his older siblings.

They were still amazed at his deep voice and tall stature since it came from the former little boy they used to tower over during their childhoods in this very house. They reminded their kid brother of some of the final words of their mother and told about their treasure hunt.

After lunch, the trio walked through the arbor that their dad had installed when they were just kids. The older siblings showed the piles of dirt to their “little� brother, and he found some matchbox cars and tattered baseballs that they had missed. He pointed out the catbird that was watching them and calling out from the fence. Only he would know that. He could identify most of the birds that came to their mother’s garden. He always was the observant one, and was usually first to spot a wild animal lurking in the woods back

in their hiking days with their dad.

Being the youngest, he had spent a little time in the garden helping his mom when the others left home.

As he sifted through the soil that the treasure-hunters had dug up, he inspected the unusual garlic. “You knuckleheads, this isn’t garlic. It’s tulips, daffodils, anemones, and alliums—well I guess those are in the onion family, so you are at least partly right.�

Then something dawned on him. Right around this spot is where he remembered pink tulips blooming. His mom used to joke about buying herself pink diamonds.

Sure enough, when they examined the pile of dirt a little better, they found a broken flower tag with the name Pink Diamond Tulips. “And look what else you dug up,� he went on, “why those are her irises—Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty—to be exact. She was always going on about those things.� Now the memories were flooding back. Under the dogwood tree were the “Little Gem� daffodils.

Why of course. What did their mother treasure most of all? Her garden and the precious time she spent there always trying to make it more beautiful. “We were kids and never really appreciated it, but now I get it,� said the oldest. “Do you remember how fun it was snipping basil, mint, and parsley for dinner? And how about that time that she sent you out for cilantro, and you almost poisoned us with weeds? Good times.� She had to get in at least one good-natured jab at her brother this weekend. The adult children spent the rest of the afternoon replanting the flower bulbs and covering the holes. It was fun to be together again, and they reminisced as a bittersweetness hung in the air.

They never took that little backyard garden for granted again. It became a place to find their peace when life turned upside down. They realized their mother had left them something valuable, and they were very rich indeed with buried treasure in the garden.

heezy and the Crackers are a seven-piece band who have skyrocketed to success as one of the most popular reggae bands on the east coast. Formed in 2007 by front man Cheezy McNasty and a friend, the band started out playing reggae covers of popular songs and have evolved to include the seven members there are today. I had the privilege of talking to lead singer about how the band writes music, their newest album, “Yes Please”, and their future projects.

McNasty grew up in a household filled with classic rock music, but it was the reggae sound that piqued his interest. He felt at deep connection with artists such as UB40 and Bob Marley which resulted in him delving deeper into reggae music and realizing he related to not only the melo-

dies, but also the message. “I gravitated towards UB40. I just thought, ‘what a cool group’, because they were covering people’s songs but in a reggae style” explained McNasty.

One question I just had to ask was about his name. I was not surprised to hear that Cheezy McNasty was not his birth name, but a nickname given to him when he was younger by his friends while they were listening to “Off the Heezy” by Snoop Dogg.

Being young boys and a bit of back and forth banter later, his friend dubbed him “Cheezy”. When an older brother of one of his friend’s heard then “Cheezy” shred on the guitar, he labelled his talent as “McNasty”.

Hence, Cheezy McNasty was born.

Although the band has seen several members over the years with the current formation having been together for three to four years, McNasty has stayed consistent with writing the music and lyrics. McNasty’s literal take on lyric-writing is perhaps what has made the band such

I questioned McNasty on his inspiration for writing this song in particular and it truly encapsulates the mantra that reggae music was founded on. “Most of our gigs are played outside which means there can be a lot of rain. Some of our best gigs have been on those days when it stops raining and the sun comes out” says McNasty. The song reflects what it means to wait out the storm for “brighter days”, and of course, this mirrors many aspects of life and is pertinent for the current situation we are in.

I was interested in getting to know what Cheezy is like away from his onstage persona, and it soon became apparent why I enjoy his music so much. Away from the band, he is a passionate animal-lover and actively

advocates to his fans the importance of adopting. With two rescue dogs and a rescue cat of his own, he wants others to experience the joys of saving an animal. It was clear to see how the culture of reggae helps shape his life.

In terms of up coming projects, Mc Nasty ha s been working with the talented DJ Emculate on a selection of covers from, “Yes Please”, plus other singles to keep busy during this offtime. Although typically a turntable DJ, DJ Emaculate has been creating some unique sounds for Cheezy and the Crackers and this is set to be an exciting and distinctive new side project for the band.

Fortunately, Cheezy and the Crackers were able to push through Summer 2020 and only lost 35% of their work, something which McNasty says they are immensely grateful for.

Being grateful brings good health Nutrition

ratitude…can be an incredibly powerful and invigorating experience. There is growing evidence that being grateful may not only bring good feelings. It could lead to better health.

People of all ages and nationalities who have more grateful dispositions report fewer health complaints than their less grateful counterparts.

Seems grateful participants reported fewer health problems (such as headaches, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory infections, and sleep disturbances); in another, they reported fewer physical symptoms (including headaches, dizziness, stomachaches, and runny noses). Seems pretty clear-cut, right?

Not necessarily.

One big question is whether gratitude causes good health or whether good health causes gratitude—or perhaps something else makes us both grateful and healthy. Indeed, while I witness first hand with clients that grateful people are healthier, I understand it seems that people in poorer health are less likely to feel grateful.

I find in my practice clients who don’t sleep properly are more likely to struggle with losing the weight. I explain to my clients that sleep is vital for good health. Inadequate sleep puts strain on the body and increases your risk of developing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions. But anyone who’s struggled with insomnia knows it’s not always so easy to get enough z’s.

Perhaps surprisingly, studies suggest that boosting your gratitude might be a relatively easy way to improve your slumber.

You don’t have to be a natural gratitude guru to get good sleep.

Evidence suggests that just performing gratitude exercises can help. In one study people with neuromuscular disease who kept a daily gratitude journal for three weeks reported sleeping significantly longer at night and feeling significantly more refreshed than people in the control group. And in a 2016

study women who kept a gratitude journal for two weeks reported slightly better daily sleep quality compared to women who performed other tasks.

The great news is Gratitude feels heartwarming, and a growing body of work suggests that gratitude might help keep our actual hearts healthy, too!

It’s been found that people feeling appreciation (an emotion related to gratitude) have improved heart rate variability, an indicator of good heart health. Women who kept a gratitude journal where they wrote about “previously unappreciated peo-

ple and things in their lives” for two weeks ended up with lower blood pressure than those who wrote about daily events. Together, these and other results suggest that feeling gratitude can be good for healthy hearts.

The relationship between gratitude and physical health is still developing, but studies so far suggest that there may be a connection. I certainly believe there is a connection.

At the very least, it appears that more grateful people report feeling healthier and sleeping better, reach their weight loss goals and they may even have some physiological markers of better health.

How is it that gratitude might make people healthier? Besides helping them sleep, gratitude may lead people to engage in other behaviors that help keep them healthy, like eating well and not smoking. hen my mom sold my childhood home, I had so many emotions.

Change is always somewhat scary to me, especially as I had become comfortable with the security that comes with living somewhere for over 20 years. The most alarming part to me was who she would potentially end up living next

After living somewhere for so long, you become familiar with the sights and sounds of the neighborhood.

If you're lucky like we were for so many years, your neighbors become happily entangled in your day-to-day life. I remember fondly getting phone calls from my neighbors informing me that my cat had decided to invite himself into their home. Even our pets felt the neighborly bond. He would visit and then come home, just like we would.

When my mom moved into her new house, I was nervous about the people she would be building these essential new relationships with within her new neighborhood. I figured no one would be as good as the lifelong friends who started as our neighbors in our old house. Luckily, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Thankfully, my mom lucked out big time in the neighbor department again. Everyone keeps an eye out for everyone else. I knew it was a good situation, but I didn’t realize how good until last week when I got a Facebook message from my mom’s new nextdoor neighbor asking me to call her. I immediately got on my phone.

The neighbor noticed a burst pipe that was turning the side yard of my mom’s house into a swampy mess.

I gave her the garage code, and she squished her way into the basement and turned off the water inside the

house. Not all heroes wear capes. In this case, my hero was wearing pajama pants.

This act of kindness meant the world to me. I now know that my mom is surrounded by real neighbors—people who have her back by just keeping an eye on her house and general well-being.

I don’t know if it’s the world we’re living in now or what, but this act of genuine, selfless kindness made me tear up. Well, actually it made me fullon cry. I haven’t stopped thanking them since that day, and if you don’t mind, I’d like to thank them here too.

Thank you, Claire, John, and Tim. Because of your generosity and presence in my mom’s life, I sleep better at night. And if you were wondering, she’s got your back too, but I think you already knew that.

Don’t take your neighbors for granted.

Keep moving to beat holiday stress

he "most wonderful time of the year," the holidays, is also one of the most stressful times of the year. Exercise is one surefire way to keep stress at bay.

Working out can help you keep your cool so you make it through the season without melting down or blowing your top. We need balance and so many of us overindulge in all the things that make us feel guilty. Why not indulge in some good healthy exercise and see how that will combat the stress and just make you feel in control during a very busy, festive time.

Yoga is great for beating stress and it’s for everybody, not just those that can touch their toes with their nose. Yoga offers a number of benefits and stress reduction is at the top of the list. It can also enhance your mood and overall sense of well-being.

Practicing yoga may lead to improved balance, flexibility, range of motion and strength. Yoga might also help alleviate conditions, such as depression, pain, anxiety and insomnia. The holidays can certainly cause some of these conditions. If you can’t find time to get to a studio or gym for a class, fire up your computer or tablet to find an online substitute. Some are as short as ten minutes. Surely, you can spare ten minutes!

Cardio is another great way to combat stress. Get moving to get that heart rate up. Why? Because physical activity boosts endorphins, those feel good hormones. All that adds up to a better mood and less stress. Just about anything counts. Hit the elliptical or treadmill, turn up your favorite playlist and sweat your cares away. Try a fitness app for a great workout in as little as fifteen minutes. You can find something you like on You Tube, On Demand, or My Fitness Pal. There are literally hundreds of options and many are free of charge. You can also make up your own routine. Body weight workouts are great and they can be as long or as short as you like. Some examples include: jumping jacks, jump rope, lunges, squats, planks, mountain climbers, burpees high knees, push-

ups or running up a flight of stairs or bleachers.

How many steps can you get in while shopping? Track with your Smartphone, Fitbit or Apple Watch if you have one. They even have those very inexpensive step counters that simply track the number of steps you take. Set a goal and keep walking until you meet it. Think about it, you’ll save yourself the stress and trouble of searching for a close parking space or paying for valet.

Inside the mall, you can take time for yourself to walk and clear your head.

Your goal throughout the season and beyond is to keep moving. Regular and consistent participation in exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. Don’t let stress ruin the most wonderful time of the year. Take care of yourself with exercise. It will also help with burning off all those sweet treats!

n a non-COVID year, this would be the time between the Thanksgiving football games and any teams that are still alive and playing for a state championship.

However, these are NOT normal times, and by the time you read this, all high school football should be wrapped up.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles went to Cleveland and lost to the Browns.

The Sixers made some major moves on draft night and then followed that up with a big name in free agency.

The Phillies have officially hired a new pitching coach. The ECHL affiliate of the Flyers makes a big COVID-related announcement. Finally, on the local front, several local football teams either play for a “pod” championship or play their final games of the 2020 season.

From the entertainment world, I watched a movie about a music legend. I also want to give a “shout-out” to a local business that performed a service for me that’s hard to find these days! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as once again they can’t score a touchdown in the first half of a football game.

Heck, they didn’t score any points at ALL against the Browns until when they tied things up at 7-7. However, once again the trend continued of the Eagles scoring, and then they let their opponent score right back on them. Things went from ugly to worse when Carson Wentz took a sack in the endzone and let the Browns register a safety. I think it’s seriously time to ask if Wentz needs to sit for a game. ● Of course, Doug Pederson makes those decisions, and how do you “bench” a coach? He did seem to try and run the ball more early in the game, and that was working, until Miles Sanders coughed it up at the Browns four-yard-line. After that, the Birds seemed to abandon the run. Now Pederson can’t run the ball for Sanders, but he can try to fix the penalty situation. Against

What does that say about Pederson and his coaching staff? It certainly doesn’t reflect well upon them.

Pederson was asked about benching Wentz and he basically admitted that if you sit down #11, you’re sending the message your season is over. “He is our starter. No question about it. I think if you get to that spot where you don’t start him or you bench him, you’re sending the wrong message to your football team, that the season’s over,” Pederson said after the Eagles dismal 22-17 loss to the host Cleveland Browns. “That’s a bad message.

So I can take it. I can wear it. It is what it is.” Based on Pederson’s comments, I don’t see Wentz being replaced by Jalen Hurts as the starter, but you never know!

Somehow, remarkably, the Eagles still lead the division at 3-6-and1. However, injuries continue to pile up. Right tackle Lane Johnson (shoulder) and nickel corner Cre’Von LeBlanc (ankle) left the Browns game and could not return.

Left tackle Jason Peters, center Jason Kelce, defensive end Derek Barnett, and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox were in and out. The Eagles used their 9th different offensive line combination in ten games against the Browns. No consistency up front, and thus, no consistency with the offense!

My last comment on the Eagles is this. The Browns game was the “easy” matchup in the next few weeks. Up next, they are home for Monday Night Football with Seattle. Then they go to Green Bay, are home with the Saints, and are at Arizona. It’s conceivable that they could lose all FOUR of those games, and be 3-10-and-1 going into their final two games of the season at Dallas and home with Washington.

Just ugly!

Let’s move on to the Sixers as they attacked NBA draft night with abandon. New President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey came in and immediately made an impact. Two trades and three draft picks later, the Sixers looked like a completely different basketball team, and Morey was able to do so without giving up franchise pieces Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

pick to Oklahoma City, with sharpshooter Danny Green coming back. This move is HUGE as it gets Horford’s gigantic contract off the books, and also Horford was never comfortable in Philadelphia. The Sixers then took Tyrese Maxey from Kentucky with the 21st pick, and he looks like a potential steal at that point. Afterward, the Sixers packaged the 36th pick and Josh Richardson to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Seth Curry. In Curry, the Sixers get a player who is shooting 44.3% on three-pointers in 256 career games. Curry is the younger brother of Golden State Warriors perennial All-NBA player Steph Curry and the son-in-law of Sixers coach Doc Rivers.

With the 49th pick, the Sixers drafted Arkansas guard Isaiah Joe, one of the best three-point shooters in college. Then, the Sixers ended a great draft day by selecting former DePaul forward Paul Reed at No. 58. To me, the theme of draft night was adding shooters to surround Embiid and Simmons. This is the key, I think, and if you want evidence, just look at the 2017-18 season. Remember when the Sixers closed that year with 16 straight regular-season wins? They ended

up with 52-wins and a big reason was all the shooters they had on the floor. Robert Covington and JJ Redick were in the starting lineup.

Ersan Ilyasova and Marco Belinelli were buyout pickups late in the season. Those four shooters created spacing for Embiid and Simmons.

I’m glad to see the Sixers are attempting to get back to that.

The Sixers appear to be doing well in free agency too. Last Friday night, it appeared that Dwight Howard was going to remain with the Lakers as he first tweeted out ““I’m staying right where I belong. Laker nation I love y’all. Purple and gold never gets old.” However, five minutes later, the tweet was deleted and news broke that the 16-year veteran is going to be signing with the Sixers instead. This move reunites Howard with Daryl Morey, the new Sixers president of basketball operations.

As the general manager of the Houston Rockets, Morey signed Howard to a three-year, $70 million free-agent contract in July 2013.

This time around, he got the soonto-be 35-year-old at a cap-friendly bargain of a one-year, $2.56 million dollar deal. Howard then tweeted out ““Thank you. I am very grateful for this opportunity. Let’s bring a chip to Philly.”

Howard will wear jersey No. 39 and serve as a backup for three-time All-Star Joel Embiid. Howard averaged 7.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks this past season as the Los Angeles Lakers’ backup center.

He played a key role as the Lakers won their 17th NBA title. The Sixers are getting an eight-time All-Star and three-time league defensive player of the year. He also won back-to-back shot-blocking titles.

Howard has averaged 16.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks in 1,113 career games, with 1,045 starts. At one point there was talk Nerlens Noel might come back to the Sixers. For my part, I think this move is WAY better!

As I first told you in my last column, the Phillies have officially hired Caleb Cotham as their new pitching coach. Cotham is just 33 years old, but he worked with newly crowned Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer in Cincinnati and also was a pitcher for Joe Girardi’s Yankees. The hope is that he will be able to relate to the modern pitcher and also provide some new instruction to a bullpen that was much-maligned last season.

Devils moved to the Tri County for a brief period of time, it was called off. Here’s my hope that it gets back on the schedule on the regular. The Wildcats won the latest matchup 13-0, but I really hope they get back to playing this one every year.

With both schools located in the small town of Hammonton, this game should be a must play each November!

I’ll close with a two items from entertainment and one “shout-out” to a local business as I’d like to start with my review of “Get On Up”, the 2014 bio-pic on James Brown. I somehow missed this one six years ago, but caught it on cable the other night and came away with a few thoughts. Number one, Chadwick Boseman really was a superstar and he could inhabit any role. Number two, this movie was definitely not “Ray”, the 2004 film about the late

Ray Charles. Unlike “Ray”, “Get on Up” uses a non-linear narrative and even breaks the fourth wall a few times. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t ask you to go out of your way to see it. I wasn’t surprised to see it barely made its money back earning $33 million on a budget of $30 million.

My watch battery died on my TV-

40 watch that I wear all the time.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had to replace the battery, but as I tried to find a watch counter or someone to do the job, it became increasingly clear to me that this was no easy task. The first business I visited had a watch counter, but the associate sadly told me “we don’t change watch batteries anymore”.

The second place, which was a big-box store, didn’t even have a watch counter! Which is when I remembered “Batteries & Bulbs” in Northfield. Thanks to Mike for replacing my battery and getting me on my way quickly! ince the United States began mining coins in the late 1700’s, there have been literally hundreds of different designs of the denomination struck for use in commerce. Many collectors try to assemble a complete set of all the coins in a series, an example being the Peace dollars and Morgan dollars I wrote about in my last 2 articles. However, showing one of these collections to a non-coin collector, would typically invoke a response of “but they all look the same”, this non-collector failing to appreciate the different mints involved as well as the history which had an impact on the number of coins struck in different years, affecting their value.

A type collection is different because it requires only 1 of each type coin of a given design for the collection, and for example, would include only one each of the Peace and Morgan dollar. Type collections are very interesting, even to non-collectors who probably didn’t realize the variety of different designs used for our coins over the years. There are various type collections that can be assembled, and as with all aspects of coin collecting, it is the collector that decides what is best for him or her. I’ll give examples of some of the more popular type sets and then of a few others that require a little more effort and expense.

The first and easiest to complete is the Twentieth Century type collection, an example of all different coins minted from 1900 to 1999. Here’s what would be included.

One cent coins: an Indian head cent (1900-1909); Lincoln cent (1909-1999), 1 copper with wheat stalk reverse (1909-1958), 1 steel (1943), 1 copper with Lincoln Memorial Building on reverse (1959-1999). 1909 had 2 varieties, one with the designers initials (V.D.B.) on the reverse, and only partially that year, and the others from then on, without. That variety is not usually included in the set.

Five cent coins: Liberty head (19001912); Indian head/ Buffalo reverse (1913-1938); Jefferson nickel (19381999), 1 silver substitute with large mintmarks on reverse (1942-1945).

As with the Lincoln cents, there are 2 varieties of the 1913 Buffalo nickel, one with the Buffalo on raised ground, the

other on flat ground. Again this variety is not usually included.

Ten cent coins: Barber dime (Barber is designers’ name) (1900-1916); Mercury dime (1916-1945); Roosevelt dime (1946-1999), silver (1946-1964), copper-nickel clad (1965-1999).

Quarter dollar coins: Barber quarter (1900-1916); Standing Liberty, bare breast variety (1916-1917)l covered breast (1917-1930); Washington quarter (1932-1999), silver (1932-1964), copper-nickel clad (1965-1998), 1976 Bi-Centennial w/ drummer boy reverse, both silver and copper-nickel. 1999 began the State Quarter series, so actually the first 5 state quarters with the different reverses should be included, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut.

Half dollar coins: Barber half dollar (1900-1916); Walking Liberty half dollar (1916-1947); Ben Franklin half dollar (1948-1963); J.F. Kennedy half dollar (1964-1999), 90% silver (1964), 40% silver (1965-1970), copper-nickel clad (1971-1999), 1976 Bi-Centennial with Independence Hall reverse, both silver and copper-nickel.

Dollar coins: Morgan dollar (again, the designers name)(1900-1904, 1921); Peace dollar (1921-1928, 1934, 1935); Eisenhower dollar (1971-1978), copper-nickel clad (1971-1978), 40% silver (1971-1974), 1976 Bi-Centennial with eagle and globe reverse, both silver and copper-nickel clad. Susan B. Anthony dollar (1979-1981, 1999). The 1921 Peace dollar is considered a different type because it was struck in high relief, the only year that occurred, but the coin is not always included in a type set.

The Twentieth Century type set is probably the easiest and least expensive to complete, with only the 19161917 type 1 Standing Liberty quarter being the more difficult, yet not an overly expensive coin to obtain.

Type sets only include coins that are “business strikes”, that is coins that would normally be released into circulation, although some coins in this type set were not released into circulation and are only available in government mint sets.

fter much anticipation and hand wringing, it’s finally over. No, not the virus but Thanksgiving.

The annual angst of whether our children are coming over or are they going to spouse’s parents or friends. They all celebrate Christmas and Easter together.

My wife and I celebrate Chanukah but since Chanukah is a minor holiday, we don’t make an issue out of it. But we have driven the stake into the ground and proudly claimed Thanksgiving as our own. My wife used to refer to Thanksgiving as her Super Bowl but given all the controversy surrounding the sport, football has lost its appeal to us and we haven’t watched a game in two years. Could she call Thanksgiving her Augusta or her Wimbledon? Possibly. The emotional build up was similar; the decorating, shopping, menu planning, seating arrangements, side dishes, table settings, baking, cooking, etc. which begins four days before the actual meal. There are also the dietary requirements of guests to consider. Now there must be gluten free, vegetarian, organic and sugar free options available. I remember growing up with the same predicable menu every year. Turkey, Stovetop stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole with tiny marshmallows on top and the ever-present dish of olives and pickles. But as time went on, this Norman Rockwell depic-

tion of the American family sitting around a dinner table all eating together gave way to the pressure I felt to share Thanksgiving with my in-laws. After all, they had a large family and we just had my parents and my brother. This year, we had extended family who opted out of attending, citing a variety of suspicious reasons. It may have been the Covid fear that prompted the cancellation but more than likely the political chasm that separates us. Politics has been the subject of discourse over the last couple of gatherings and could have well been a factor in the decision of not attending thus ending a decade old tradition. Now my wife and I are conducting an “after action report.” What can we do different? What could we have improved on, what worked out really well?

Who is likely to be around the table next year? Sure, it is a long way off but we don’t want to base our Thanksgiving happiness on whether our children, grandchildren and extended family members are attending and we don’t want to exert undue pressure on them to do so, after all, it’s really just a dinner; or is it? It’s beginning to look like loading up the van again, packing bathing suits and sunscreen and heading to 95 South. One can dream but my wife would never agree to that.
