The Cape-Atlantic Conference of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association has OFFICIALLY ENDORSED Joseph “TOKYO” O’Donoghue as their choice to be elected Atlantic County Sheriff this November. The Cape-Atlantic Conference represents all of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) locals in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Finding Comfort This Fall Letter from the editor

A

s we settle into our fall routines and the holidays are approaching, I have a renewed gratitude for all that reliably remains unchanged— mums and pumpkins dotting the roadside, along with the beautiful colors emerging in the leaves. Halloween offers us all some much needed fun.

Whether it is decorating or carving a pumpkin, watching a scary movie or getting dressed up in costume, the upcoming holiday should stir up a little joy.

Last week, I drove by a house that was all lit up with a huge array of Halloween decorations. It made me smile so I stopped to grab a few photos to share. When I posted it on Shore Local's Facebook page, I was stunned Issue 142

by the tremendous response it got.

It seemed to have offered a much needed break from all the Covid-19 and political news we are continually bombarded with.

I hope you enjoy this issue. It's packed with columns and features.

Winter Outlook: To forecast or not to forecast

T

he fall foliage has just started to show its seasonal color. Candy collection efforts for Halloween night are still in the planning stages. Yet there are already two harbingers for the coming winter season: the Christmas decorations twinkling in area stores, and meteorologists buried in a blizzard of requests for snow predictions for this winter.

Yes, despite the occasional egg on a forecaster's face when tomorrow's forecast goes awry, there's actually a growing demand for us to cook up a seasonal forecast and look four months into the future and try to predict just how cold and snowy February could be. Perhaps it's a credit to the science of meteorology and the advancements that have been made in weather forecasting, even though

we're still the butt of many jokes. Yes, I've heard the one that says I can be wrong "all the time" and not get fired.

True to a small degree, but I actually think daily forecasts are now right "most of the time."

Winter forecasts, however, are another story. Find me one forecast that said snow last winter would be as scarce as a beachfront parking spot in the middle of summer. To my knowledge, there wasn't any, and that's a shame. After all, a vast amount of time and energy are put into most winter outlooks. Personally, I've spent hours designing the winter blueprint I thought Mother Nature would follow, only to have it deviate from the plans right out of the gate.

Why? Well, there are so many variables that can impact how cold and snowy a winter is. Let's name a few. Water temperatures off of the East Coast can impact the track and strength of coastal storms.

The strength and position of a high pressure over Greenland is crucial, and can help form a "block" that can create a meteorological traffic jam that makes things repeatedly cold and snowy or warm and dry. The snow cover over Canada and even Siberia can dictate how much cold air

is available to come down throughout the winter. And the water temperatures thousands of miles away in the central Pacific Ocean, which help determine if we're in a La Nina or El Nino cycle, can influence the storm track and amount of moisture around to fall as rain or snow.

Now if a forecaster can correctly predict all of those variables over thousands of miles of real estate from the Pacific Ocean to Siberia to Greenland to the waters off the East Coast months in advance, then the winter forecast will be a success. If one thing is wrong, the entire forecast can derail. Ay, there's the rub.

It's all interconnected and complex, and therefore leaves ample room for error.

While my distaste for a seasonal winter outlook grows by the season, I don't feel the same about all long range forecasting efforts. Meteorologists have made enormous strides in accurately forecasting the number of tropical systems during hurricane season, and whether that season would be quiet, average, active, or in the case of 2020, hyperactive.

But predicting where the storms will strike months in advance is still impossible. Yet the publicity the hurricane forecast generates at the beginning of the season serves a purpose as well, and often encourages early preparation and awareness.

I hardly think the same thing can be said about the winter forecast.

If a snowier than average winter is predicted, is there a rush on snow blowers and rock salt? Quite the contrary, as that rush comes after the first big storm, not months before it. More than anything else, I think the primary purpose a winter outlook serves is a conversation piece. Not that I mind any conversation that has to do with weather. Nor do I mind the

challenge of trying to predict months into the future. But is it worth it?

Fur thermore, there's an issue with perception of a winter forecast. Let's say we get one blockbuster blizzard in early December, one that drops two feet (24") of snow. Right there, that's a snowier than average season, as our average snowfall for an entire winter in South Jersey is around 17". But let's also say that the rest of the winter is warm and snowless. In the history books, it's a snowy winter. If a snowy winter was forecast, it would certainly qualify. But to most of us that lived through it, it was one day of snow and three months of mild weather.

Given the inherent uncertainty, I think the better approach to a winter outlook is a monthly forecast for December through March, issued just before the start of each winter month. There's certainly more skill in predicting 30-day temperature and snowfall trends than there is accurately predicting 120 days ahead.

Look for those monthly prognostications this coming season, and I'll grade each prediction along the way.

In the meantime, we can focus on the fall, take in the foliage, and sure up that Halloween costume idea. If you're going as a meteorologist, don't forget the green screen, a weather map, and a little egg for your face.

He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Area Farms Offer Family Fun This Fall

very October my family and I like to pack as many fall activities into our schedules as we can. With COVID-19 that has made this year a bit of a challenge. Some of our favorite hayrides and spooky festivities have been canceled this year, but there is still plenty of fun to be had. Here are some of the local farms at the Jersey Shore to spend some time with your family.

Reed’s Organic Farm Reed’s Organic Farm in Egg Harbor Township is actively working to become a farm sanctuary not just for animals but also the community.

Reed’s Organic Farm is open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm. Bring your friends and family along with some lunch to sit on their property and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and take a self guided tour. The farm offers a “Pick What You Want, Pay What

You Want” farm stand, an animal sanctuary, and plenty of space to sit and enjoy their growing scenery. Right now, everything on the farm is donation based. Your donations go to helping the farm animals, help plan the construction for a new barn, and also go towards the planning and creation for community based events and activities.

Donations can be made on site to the non-profit A Meaningful Purpose and on their website. The farm is all outdoors; they ask that a mask be worn when social distancing cannot be practiced.

R and J Farms Egg Harbor City’s R and J Farms is open Monday through Thursday 12pm to 6pm. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the farm will be open 10:30am to 8pm. Halloween they will have the

amended hours of 10:30am till 4 pm.

You can enjoy their elaborate corn maze, a ride to their pumpkin patch, and jumping pad. They also offer pony rides on the weekends.

Hayrides close at 6pm, and ticket sales for

the corn maze close 1 hour prior to closing. There are concessions available. R and J Farms ask that you wear your mask in queue lines and where social distancing cannot be practiced. There are hand sanitizing stations throughout the farm. There is also a farm stand to purchase flowers and gourds.

As well as beautiful pallet wood signs for purchase and around the farm to take pictures with family and friends.

Due to COVID restrictions, for weekend visits they ask that you make a reservation on R and J Farm’s eventbrite.

Sahl’s Father Son Farm Located in Galloway, Sahl’s Father Son Farm has been running their corn maze and activities since 2009.

Jeremey Sahl says he has increased the hand washing and sanitizing stations throughout the farm as a COVID precaution. To make sure everyone in the family can be included, Sahl has also planted the pumpkin patch

Creamy Acres Located in Mullica Hill, Creamy Acres farm is having it’s Fall Fest Daytime Fun every Saturday from 10am to 4pm. They also have their shopping markets open Monday through Saturday 10am-5pm. Creamy Acres require a face covering when entering the property, when in queue lines, on their wagon rides, and when social distancing cannot be practiced. Their daytime activities include wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, a kiddie corn maze, a farm park, pedal karts, and their Barnyard Walk. Concessions at the farm are cash only. Their Night of Terror is open for the 2020 season.

Pre-purchased tickets are required and available on their website closer to the main gate, so anyone who chooses not to ride on the hayride can still have fun in the pumpkin patch. Sahl’s Father Son Farm features a newly added digger yard, pony rides, hayrides, corn maze, kiddie coral park, pig races, farm animal viewings, toy duck races, disc toss, ball zone, pedal carts, and corn cannon.

Every Saturday concessions are provided by the Chef Food Rollin Food Truck. The farm asks that you please wear your mask in the queue lines and where social distancing cannot be practiced. They are open Thursday

Winding Creek Alpaca Farm Fall on the farm with the Halloween Alpacas. This event is being hosted on October 17-18th, 24-25th, and the 31st. orking at Shore Medical Center, I find myself constantly thanking our doctors for their years of schooling, dedication and commitment and I remain in awe of our nurses who selflessly care for our patients. While I find inspiration from so many at Shore, there is one member of our team who inspires us all. His name is Stephen Jones.

Stephen Jones has been a friendly, smiling face at Shore Medical Center for several years, first working in the linen department as part of Atlantic County Special Services School District’s (ACSSSD) School-to-Work Program, and now as a full-time housekeeping employee where he is flourishing. On Oct. 7, Stephen was honored by JEVS Human Services based in Philadelphia with their Inspiration Award for his efforts to overcome adversity to find fulfilling employment. Stephen accepted his award during a virtual version of JEVS’ 22nd annual fundraising event, Strictly Business.

After graduation from ACSSSD, Stephen connected with JEVS Human Services’ hireAbility program, which assists individuals living with a disability or chronic disease by preparing them for competitive em-

Fred Banner, Chief Information Officer, is thrilled Stephen was able to continue his work at Shore beyond his school experience.

“At six 6-feet tall, Stephen is quite a presence, but it's the size of his heart that makes the biggest impact.

My life and our medical center are richer as a result of Stephen. His contagious "can do” attitude, his quick wit and sense of humor coupled with his sincere desire to serve and contribute to our mission serve as a role model to all who know and work with him.

Fruits off the beaten path

pples are bland, oranges are basic, and blueberries are so yesterday. If you couldn’t tell, I’ve grown tired of the standard supermarket fruit fare. If you too are bored with basic berries and a hunk of watermelon fills you with a sweeping sense of melancholy, then look no further. I’m

here to help.

I’ve always been a fan of things that weren’t conventionally “popular,” so it’s no surprise some of my favorite foods aren’t exactly your average grocery list staples. I’m always on the lookout for new hybrid, miniaturized,

and exotic fruits (I’m super-cool in that way), and I’m about to help you out of your produce predicament with some of my favorite lesser-known fruits. I invite you to step out of your grocery comfort zone and give something new a try.

The first recommendation is Rambutan. This small, round, spiky fruit is typically grown in tropical climates. If we’re ever allowed to travel again, you’ll find these sweet gems in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia. It’s related to the better-known fruit, lychee. Lychees are sweeter, which makes me like Rambutan a little more.

Rambutan (when peeled) produces a white fruit about the size of a ping pong ball.

It’s super juicy, and I can only describe the flesh like that of a slightly more gelatinous grape.

It’s sweet, but not too sweet.

When eating, please mind the seed.

It’s about the size of a large almond. I found some today at a flea market/ farmers market, but you can find them at your local Asian grocery store.

Next up, Kiwi berries! Kiwi berries are precisely what they sound like: berries that taste like kiwi. It’s also named the hardy

kiwi. This delightful bite-sized gift from nature looks a lot like a tiny kiwi sans the little hair and inedible skin.

My love of hybrid fruits and miniature versions of everyday objects makes this my new fruit obsession. Kiwi berries reach their peak in fall, mostly September and early October, so you may still be able to try them if you look hard enough. You can find these tasty little morsels growing in Japan, Korea, and Northern China. Personally, I found them in the far away and very majestic land of Trader Joe’s.

I’m a huge fan of kiwis, and these are almost identical in flavor. It’s also a little too easy to eat an entire container without realizing it, just sayin’.

Now we will learn about something that they do sell in most local grocery stores. If I can name one positive take-away from 2020, it would have to be when I found Cotton Candy Grapes (at this point, we have to find pleasure wherever we can). The grapes, which taste eerily like cotton candy (seriously, it’s a horticultural miracle) were developed in California by a grower with a name as catchy as the grape itself, “Grapery,” who started selling them in 2011. It took me far too long to find this fruitful anomaly.

regular grapes, but hey, why not treat yourself? I think we can agree we all deserve a treat right about now.

These are about the size of a small cherry tomato with a golden yellow color. They have a unique taste, often described as a mixture of pineapple, sour cherry, and citrus. There are many flavors packed into this berry, which looks and grows much like a tomato. This superfruit mainly grows

in South America, but we are now learning they have the potential to be produced in any climate.

Re s ea rch e r s are currently studying how to grow them in North America, an area where they are not yet grown commercially, so I’d say expect to see these more readily available in the future. When you see them, I urge you to try them; you’ve got nothing to lose. You can find these right now at your local Asian grocery store as well as Trader Joe’s. However, we are quickly approaching the end of their

season, so if you can find them now and you’re feeling adventurous, go for it.

These are only a couple of my favorite lesser-known fruits, (shout-out to champagne grapes!) but honestly, all fruit is a miracle! A good piece of fruit has lifted my mood on more than one occasion. Is that just me or everyone?

I find great pleasure in learning about new ways nature nourishes us; I invite you to try a new fruit; there is very little to lose. Enjoy!

Hometown Hero: Paige Vacarro, Founder of C.R.O.P.S.

f you've met Paige Vaccaro, the thing you are most likely to remember is her smile, friendly demeanor and her passion for the people in her community. Voccaro is a leader and like many leaders, she wears a lot of hats. She is a mother, a teacher, a poet, a leader and a visionary.

Vaccaro is the founder of C.R.O.P.S. (Communities Revolutionizing Public Spaces) a NJ 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission goes beyond the gardens and farmer’s markets that they are most well known for. Vaccaro's vision for C.R.O.P.S. includes connecting communities and putting people side by side to get to know each other as humans and individuals, thus breaking down racism and stereotypes.

In 2016, C.R.O.P.S. launched the wildly successful Linwood Farmers Market. In 2017, C.R.OP.S. first garden was developed at Covenant House in Atlantic City. It has since evolved into a garden club, with 30 minutes spent gardening and then 30 minutes spent

cooking the fruits and vegetables of their labor. C.R.O.P.S. has since expanded to three garden locations and several farmers markets throughout Atlantic and Cape May Counties.

Vaccaro, founder of CROPS, and Lisa Newcomb run the CROPS programs, as co-presidents and are supported by a board of directors. They are always looking for new volunteers and financial support. A recent victory for the organization is that they now accept SNAP benefits at their markets.

"The thing I love about C.R.O.P.S. is its understated elegance," explains Voccaro. "We put our hands in dirt, but what we create is so valuable more so than the vegetables - we are connecting people and communities."

Vaccaro is a Henry Rutgers Scholar and holds a Masters degree in Education. She is a former school teacher and has taught in multiple public schools including Baltimore, Brooklyn, Newark and Ocean Township. Vaccaro relocated to Linwood

By encouraging people to connect with nature and with one another, she believes everyone benefits. Voccaro is a modern day Johnny Appleseed.

Though you will see her in the garden planting seeds, she is really planting another more valuable seed .... small positive gestures that have a deep and lasting impact.

Voccaro is also one of three moderators for the Black Lives Matter South Jersey Facebook page which currently has 1,800 followers. She leads an online poetry group. Most recently, Voccaro was chosen to be featured in a film titled "United We

Feel" featuring three poets paired with dancers.

Busy is an understatement for Voccaro. You will often see her at the markets or in the gardens with her four children in tow, ranging from 7-13 years old. Interestingly, each is named after a superhero. "They always complain when we have to go" shares Voccaro. "But in school, I notice they often write about it and that they want to be like their mom."

Be Accountable To You

A

s with most people, you might have a love-hate relationship with your bathroom scale. Normal daily fluctuations can be maddening when all you want to see is one less pound. I suggest you weigh yourself only once a week. This will keep you accountable week to week but help prevent the frustrating small changes you might see day to day.

People somehow find a food reward if there is a daily gain or loss. If there’s a weight loss they feel they worked hard so why not eat something gooey and sweet. If they gained a pound or so they throw their hands up and say “ forget this! “ and eat anything and everything out of frustration. The scale is not always our friend.

When you're trying to lose weight or maintain a hard-fought weight loss, willpower alone often isn't enough to keep you on track. And even if you think you're maintaining your goal weight, it's all too easy for a few pounds to creep back on. Keeping a daily food journal is accountability key in reaching your weight loss and fitness goals. Logging your food intake not only will be the sure fire way to lose those pounds but teach you the how’s and why’s through your journey . As I educate my clients, I recommend maintaining accountability to the one person who really matters — you!

Invest in a tape measure. A very precise way to measure success is

with a cloth tape measure. By measuring your waistline, hips, bust, and even thighs and calves, you can record tangible progress toward your goal with the kind of detail that a scale can’t give you. Because muscle takes up less volume than fat, you’ll see inches drop, even when the scale might not move.

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans? Some people keep a pair of bigger sized pants around as a tip-off to weight loss that starts to creep back, but this technique isn’t effective for everyone. You might be better off keeping a different pair of pants handy — ones you know you always want to fit into. Some people like to keep a pair of pants in a size that is not far from their goal so they know when they reach it.

In my practice I find that when couples begin the journey of weight loss they are most successful.

Having a “we’re in this together” buddy not only reinforces accountability, but also provides positive weight-loss and weight-maintenance motivation.

You can call your buddy if you find yourself wavering, and you won’t be inclined to hit the snooze button and skip your morning walk if your friend is depending on you, too. And the flip side is if your buddy is a back out, you move forward on your own. After all it’s your body for life.

Focus forward!

Setting a specific goal can be a very effective weight- loss strategy. One of the most common reasons people want to lose weight is because they are working toward a goal, like their child is getting married, or they’ve got a reunion coming up. Be careful not to focus so much on a single transitory milestone that your plan falls apart afterwards.

Set permanent objectives, too, such as living longer or even feeling more comfortable in your clothes.

We must all agree that physical activity is key to maintaining weight loss, and one of the best ways to stay on track is to keep a fitness log. It can

be as simple as marking an “X” on a calendar on days you exercise — it’s motivating to see a chain of Xs that you won’t want to break.

Make it a habit for life .

Ever wish you had a drill sergeant who could put you through your exercise routine? You might not be able to afford a personal trainer who pushes you to complete reps, stick to your weight loss diet, and set new goals, but with today’s given situation you can have a virtual one, courtesy of one of the hundreds of fitness apps available. Walking is one of the easiest exercises around, and with the right motivation you can add to your daily tally.

An inexpensive pedometer is a great accountability aid that can prompt you to forge further ahead to reach fitness goals. Aim for 10,000 steps a day!

Losing weight and maintaining that ideal weight is a journey. Set up little rewards along the way to stay on the right path. Whether it’s a size goal, a weight goal or a measurement goal, the trick is to reward yourself along the way. Don’t use a food reward, but instead go get a massage, facial or go to a movie.

elevision has evolved so much over the past decade. With the invention of 4K technology and new technologies, it can be hard deciding how to watch your favorite shows.

With new streaming services popping up left-and-right, it can be hard to choose the right package. Some have decided to ditch their cable subscriptions altogether in favor of streaming TV. Before you make the switch, there are a few things you should know.

Streaming TV has only been around for a short time. Netflix was one of the first platforms to join the market in 2007 when the company began streaming TV and movies online for a small monthly fee. Since then, the streaming market has expanded to include Prime Video, Hulu, and a slew of other services, catered to all tastes. By 2010, the Smart TV was released, allowing easier access to programs via wi-fi.

These days, people are constantly

looking for ways to save money.

If you’ve been thinking about dropping your cable TV subscription, you’re not alone. It is estimated that over 6.5 million households will cut the cord this year alone. That leaves about 77 million cable customers, a 7.5% drop. Since 2014, 23% of homes have cut the cord. There are many alternatives to cable to choose from.

There are many ways to get TV service. Just like having a cable box, the first thing you will need is a device that will allow you to access the live networks you’re looking for.

Most smart TVs will already come equipped with popular streaming apps, such as Netflix, built-in. If you don’t have a smart TV, a set-top Roku box or streaming stick is the perfect option for all your viewing needs. A Roku Express streaming stick works perfectly with any TV and it’s easy to install. With models as low as $30, it’s worth the deal.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

A Grandpop in Training

I

have been a grandfather for nearly seven years and am blessed with three of those little darlings. My wife is gifted when it comes to children of any age including me, at times however, I soon learned that raising children is a perishable skill and one I have not used in decades. Since my wife was still working, I was pressed into babysitting duties for my first grandson.

There was little to do besides keep an eye on him, put him down for a nap and change him when necessary. This is when I rediscovered my gag reflex.

Oh, the memories. Three years later, a granddaughter came into our world and babysitting became more demanding. My main concern was presenting the infant back to her parents in the same working order as when they left. This was more difficult than it would seem. My grandson was so affectionate, I was concerned he was going to hug the life out of his sister, so I was extra vigilant while

still coping with radioactive diapers. Where are the wipes again?

Time passed as my grandson realized the fragile nature of the baby but this didn’t keep me from having to protect her from whooshing light sabers and hurling model aircraft. My eyes nervously glanced at the clock while awaiting my relief.

I was exhausted.

Two years later, we were blessed with another granddaughter which makes three children in the family. We were outnumbered but gratefully my wife came out of the bullpen and I was relegated to a supporting role. Now our grandson is almost seven years of age and the granddaughters four and two. It was a dream come true to have them spend the night recently although things didn’t go as planned.

I was totally unprepared for the mayhem at the dinner table with the children acting like they were sitting on hot coals and the waterfall of food cascading onto the floor. With my wife at the helm, bath time was a calming time for them. The warm

water and bath toys relaxed and quieted them at least temporarily. We settled into the living room for some quiet time before bed.

I didn’t realize that my son likes to wrestle with our four-year-old granddaughter and taught her some rather advanced moves. I was sitting on the edge of the sofa when she leapt from the back of the sofa onto the back of my head. I felt a crack that I have only heard after paying my chiropractor a handsome deductible and knew another visit was inevitable. She was sternly scolded, started crying and called me “Bad Pop Pop.” Soon we were all tucked in for

the night. Shortly thereafter, my grandson said he couldn’t sleep and asked if I could get into bed with him, which I did.

Before long, we were both sound asleep. My peaceful slumber ended abruptly by my grandson’s perfectly executed axe kick landing in the worst possible location. I noticed that my loud grunt didn’t even stir him and the little cherub was still in the sweet embrace of a fitful slumber.

Come morning, all the children were fed, dressed and ready when their father picked them up. “How’d it go,” he asked? “No problem,” I replied. “They were all little angels.”

“Great, we’ll have to do this again,” he said. “I can’t wait,” I answered.

A: There are four options: You can mail it back to the county board of elections. The return envelope is postage-paid (so you do not need to add a stamp).

You can drop it into one of a dozen secure drop boxes placed around each county. You can find your ballot box at this website: www. nj.gov/state/elections/vote-securedrop-boxes.shtml. Note that you can only place your ballot in a box in your county, not in a different county, even if that location is closer (votes are counted at the county level).

You can deliver your ballot in-person to your county board of elections office.

You can deliver it in person on Election Day to your designated polling location. You should receive a mailing from your county alerting you of this location before the end of October.

Q: Can someone else return my ballot for me?

A: Yes. That person, known as a bearer, can only deliver three ballots in addition to their own. The bearer has to fill out the bearer portion of the outer envelope in front of the voter. If the bearer hand-delivers the ballots to the county board of elections (instead of mailing them or placing them in a drop box), they must sign the bearer book and show identification, such as a driver’s license. Please note that a bearer cannot deliver ballots for others to a polling location on Election Day. On that day, each voter must bring their own.

Q: When is the deadline for returning my ballot?

A: If mailing your ballot, you must do so by Nov. 3. Ballots received through Nov. 10 will be counted — provided they are mailed by the 3rd. If delivering your ballot in-person to a polling location, to the board of elections or deposited into a secure drop box — the ballot must be delivered by the 8 p.m. close of polls on Election Day, Nov. 3.

Q: If I don’t want to vote by mail, can I vote in person on Nov. 3?

A: Yes. At least one polling location will be open in virtually every New

Q: Will I get to vote on a ma-

chine?

A: Not unless you have a disability that requires accommodation. Nearly everyone who votes in person at a polling location on Nov. 3 will use a paper provisional ballot.

Opposing viewpoints, shared house Presidential race doesn’t divide neighbors on 52nd Street of Ocean City

A

Prius slows to a stop on West Avenue just past the light at 52nd street on a Sunday afternoon in October as the driver pulls out her phone to take a photo. It’s not an exceptionally elaborate Halloween display in the front yard, it’s democracy, turned up full blast.

Political signs, flags and banners cover the front of the house on the northwest corner of the four-lane road, far more than usual even in this hotly contested election year. While partisan zeal has become commonplace throughout this island community and around the country, in this case it’s the contrast of the messages that has drivers coming to a stop.

The house is a duplex, with a diehard Democrat and fervent critic of

President Donald Trump downstairs, and a confirmed Republican and Trump supporter upstairs.

Both have flags and signs showing their support covering the front of their portion of the property, with downstairs neighbor Bob Hansbury also flying a Biden-Harris flag from his tall flagpole, where he more commonly has an American flag.

While the Prius is still parked across the street, another driver stopped at the red light calls out his support of Democratic nominee Joe Biden for president. Other times, passers-by yell out their heartfelt disagreement with one choice or the other.

Hansbury said he’s gotten used to it.

“We get it 15, 20 times a day,” he said, speaking on his front porch.

He doesn’t mind the honks, or speaking with people walking by. He does get annoyed with those who yell obscenities at the house.

“For some of them, it’s ‘bleep

Biden’ or it’s ‘bleep Trump.’ I don’t want children to have to hear that,” he said, gesturing at a family walking back from the beach along the sidewalk.

He said he and his upstairs neighbors, James Sirles and Sharon Austin, get along fine and have for years.

“We don’t talk politics. We just don’t do it,” he said. He described Sirles as a good person and a good neighbor.

Upstairs, there are four flags on flagpoles, with Trump 2020 flags flanking an American flag and a black

and white American flag with a single blue stripe, indicating support for police. It’s sometimes described as a “Blue Lives Matter” flag.

On a windy day like Sunday, the flags can be difficult to read as they whip and snap.

There is also a flag on the front railing in red, white and blue that says “Veterans for Trump.”

Downstairs, Hansbury has four “Biden President 2020” flags on the same posts, and on the side there are “Veterans for Joe” flags. Along his railing there are more traditional candidate signs supporting the Democratic ticket for 2020, along with a smaller “Veterans against Trump” that has a similar pattern to the opposing one above.

Hansbury served as military police in the army.

“He’s a veteran. He’s certainly earned the right to his opinion,” Hansbury said of his neighbor. He passed on a message to Sirles requesting an interview.

In a phone interview later that day, Sirles said he and Hansbury have been neighbors since 1995. Both men believe strongly in their positions, but he said that would not change how they act with each other, even as the rhetoric heats up in this election.

“We don’t even jab with each other,” Sirles said. “It’s beneath neighbors to drag that stuff up.”

He, too, hears the honks and the yelled comments. Sirles said most are in support of Trump, but Hansbury said he hears some support for Biden, even though Ocean City and Cape May County lean strongly Republican.

While it’s nice to hear from people who agree with you, Sirles said, most seem to be missing the bigger point.

“The message that none of them can get, is that although Bob and Sharon and I have different perspectives on the candidates, there’s no animosity or anything at all like that,” Sirles said. “I wish we could set that example for the rest of the nation.”

This year has seen an extraordinary amount of vitriol from supporters of both sides, and from the candidates themselves. Both sides have described 2020 as an election that will decide the very survival of American democracy.

In a brawl of a debate, one that may end up being the only presidential debate this year as Trump

has balked at debating remotely after his diagnosis with Covid-19, Biden described Trump as the worst president America has ever had, as well as calling him a clown and accusing him of fanning racial tensions instead of calming them as protest erupted around the country.

This week, Trump tweeted that the years when Barack Obama and Biden were in the White House were marked by “chaos, hatred and discord.” He has called Biden’s running mate Sen. Kamala Harris of California a monster and a communist, while hitting his opponent with a variety of conspiracy theories, without evidence, suggesting he took drugs to help his performance and that Biden, a practicing Catholic, is “against God” and following a radical left agenda.

Some of that anger has shown itself at the corner of 52nd and West.

Hansbury said people have thrown eggs at his house, stolen signs and flags and damaged his decidedly apolitical lawn ornament shaped like a lighthouse.

Hansbury has supported Democratic campaigns since childhood. He

backed Obama in both of his successful campaigns and Sen. Hilary Clinton when she faced Trump in 2016, but he has not gone to this extent with banners and signs in the past. While he has kind words for his upstairs neighbor, he has none for the president, whom he sees as dangerous and incompetent.

The flags started to go up over the summer, with a few more added over the months. But there was a short break a couple of weeks ago as the upstairs unit switched tracks from the Trump train to birthday banners.

A granddaughter was visiting from Pittsburgh and the political signs were replaced with birthday wishes.

Hansbury volunteered to take his

down as well.

“I thought that was just wonderful,” Sirles said. But unnecessary. The girl’s parents support Biden. Hansbury wanted to take them down anyway, though, because he was worried the little girl would overhear rude comments shouted from cars.

Hansbury said he has always been a Democrat, but feels that the Republican party has now become the Trump party.

“The party I campaigned against all those years has changed,” he said. Among the changes he sees is the loss of the ideal of respect for dissenting opinions.

Sirles comes from a family of Philadelphia Democrats, he said, recalling his grandfather getting out the vote as a ward leader. His time in the armed services brought him to the Republican party, he said.

“I retired from the navy in 1998.

Since then, I’ve been closely associated with candidates that support the military. Those have primarily been Republicans,” he said.

The two neighbors can’t even bond over their shared military experience, Sirles joked.

“He’s army,” he said.

Good Night Earl Harvey

The Light with Raymond Tyler

R

aymond Tyler discusses his friend, colleague and beacon of The Atlantic City Community Mr. Earl Harvey. Earl Harvey was the publisher of The AC Times News Paper. He passed away suddenly this week.

I was not supposed to be writing this article today. I was supposed to be going through a few really great “feel good stories” to write about this week. This article however, will cover a lot of things that I was supposed to do and meant to do and expected to do.

At approximately 12:30 am on Tuesday October 13th, I woke up and read a text from my colleague Whitney Ullman, telling me that our great, dear friend Earl Harvey had passed away from a heart attack. So much for “suppose.”

I have known Earl Harvey for more than 15 years and I can’t recall exactly where we met. I do recall , how we were connected...bonded together.

We were bonded through our experiences as Black journalists. Earl specifically published two newspapers. In

Philadelphia, Harvey produced The Black Professional News and in Atlantic City he published The AC Times. As a publisher, he reached out to me about the time I became the first Black columnist for The Atlantic City Weekly.

So what everyone that reads this should know is that...journalists...love each other. We go through crazy experiences to get stories. We get unbelievable perks and access to events and we work long hours for a few dollars. That is how I am connected to Vince Jackson at The AC Press, Whitney Ullman when we worked together at AC Weekly...it’s why Earl and I got along. My love for fellow journalists is why Earl Harvey was my big brother.

Sadly, I never told him, but I pray he knew it. Earl knew just about every one that published anything from flyers, to tracts to magazines to newspapers in NJ and Philadelphia and all the little towns in between.

Earl was always quick to offer me advice, call me up with a lead for me to write a story in someone else's paper or magazine. He loved to introduce me to people who could help me move up as a writer.

Sadly, there is not enough space to recall all the ways Earl Harvey helped me.

We, in the community and Black Community of Atlantic City and Philly, will easily

spend the rest of this year and into next year...singing his praise now.

I am sad to admit that much of what I am sharing with you the reader, I should have shared more often with Earl himself.

Which brings me back to “suppose” because I didn’t think I would have to write about Earl in this manner at this time.

Earl and I were always so busy. Earl, producing two monthly papers. Earl, being an advocate for small/minority business.

Earl, running his family business The Platinum Grille in Philadelphia. Earl, caring for his mother. Earl, being a champion for Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Earl was always in motion...in action. Earl was always there for me whether I needed a contact number or a speaker for an event or moral/financial support for my annual holiday drive.

So in my mind, today Earl should be no more than a phone call away.

In my mind, some 30 or 40 years from now...I would be sitting on a porch somewhere with Earl and Cindy and my other friends in the media. We would be in rocking chairs and laughing real loud and talking even louder about “the time we met” this super star athlete or “oscar”

winning actor or attended some historical event that happened in South Jersey.

That’s what was supposed to happen and our stories would not have ended for many years and articles and Christmas Parties and art openings in the future.

Yet here we are and here I am.

Earl Harvey was a giant in the world of publishing, media and friendship. Always with a bright smile and quick wit.

Always with a warm handshake.

In Philadelphia his paper The Black Professional News competed with several successful newspapers established to give a voice to The Black Community and business’ everywhere an opportunity to work with people of color. In Atlantic City his paper The AC Times was the premiere voice for people of color. His passing will close a door of access to the people of color in Atlantic City and South Jersey.

Earl Harvey will be missed. Earl Harvey was 65 years old.

Extra Points with Pete

wo weeks into October and we now have an NBA champion (with a local tie).

The NFL continues, but each week there are more and more COVID-19 issues. The ShopRite LPGA Classic crowns a champion, but without any fans in attendance. Oh yes, this is a Fall Sports Season like no other!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have won a game on the road surprisingly, and then lost one in Western PA. The Sixers have hired a head coach while watching another coach with local ties win the NBA Championship. The Phillies did demote their G.M., but there are now more question marks than answers on that front. Meanwhile, the world of baseball continues to lose some legendary names. Finally, the Flyers draft is in the books, and the free agency window is open.

From the entertainment world, I made a visit to a local movie theater, perhaps for the last time. I’ve also started something on Amazon Prime that is unlike any superhero program you’ve ever watched! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as they won surprisingly, 25-20 on the road in San Francisco, but then lost 38-29 on the road in Pittsburgh. That puts the Birds at 1-3-1 after five games, and if the Cowboys had lost to the

Giants, they actually could’ve still found themselves in first place in a down year for the NFC East. Up next, they’re home with the Ravens and home with the Giants, but will there be fans there? The Eagles are waiting to hear from the City of Philadelphia about the possibility of playing in front of a limited number of fans when they return home.

In the win at San Francisco, a few names that most had never heard of came up big for the Birds. First, Travis Fulgham caught a big touchdown pass in the 4th quarter to give the Eagles a four-point lead. Then, linebacker Alex Singleton jumped a mistake by Niners QB Nick Mullens and turned that into a pick-six to widen that lead to 11. The Eagles defense had some scary moments late in the game as C.J. Beathard marched San Francisco down the field as far as the 33 yard line before the Birds held on to win 25-20.

Those positive vibes did NOT carry over to Pittsburgh however as for once, you can’t blame Carson Wentz for the Eagles losing in Western Pennsylvania. No, the 38-29 loss falls squarely on the shoulders of Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz and his defense.

Steelers rookie Chase Claypool set a Pittsburgh franchise record with four touchdowns in the game. Three of them came the traditional way, on passes from Ben Roethlisberger.

One came rushing on an end around.

What Eagles fans will remember most is that when the Birds got to within two at 31-29, Claypool found himself all alone as he beat linebacker Nate Gerry again for another touchdown. That caused

social media to light up with questions and criticisms of Schwartz and his defensive call.

One bright spot from the Eagles game in Pittsburgh was the emergence of wide receiver Travis Fulgham. He finishes with 10 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Aside from the touchdown catch, each of the catches came in tight coverage, and as Wentz seemed to realize he could trust him to come down with the football, he kept throwing to him. Let’s hope this is the start of a beautiful pairing!

That said, the injury bug continues to be a problem. Lane Johnson had to leave the game in Pittsburgh as he continues to have problems with his left ankle. He left the field on a cart and is now seeking a second opinion on his persistently painful

ankle. In his place, fourth-round rookie Jack Driscoll came in and played pretty solidly actually. Johnson had “tightrope” surgery on his ankle in August that was supposed to fix this problems. Instead, it appears the surgery has exacerbated them.

Darius Slay, who is the Eagles top corner, left the game after making a tackle on Steelers RB James Conner. He’s now in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Even though he plays for a rival team, you have to feel for Cowboys QB Dak Prescott who suffered a gruesome injury in the Cowboys win over the Giants. Prescott went down with a dislocated ankle and had to have surgery on Sunday night. Backup Andy Dalton led the Cowboys to a win, but you have to feel for Prescott, who was playing on a one-year franchise tag and hoping for a long term, big money deal from Dallas. Now, who knows?

The Sixers have a new head coach, and it’s a guy with a pretty impressive resume. Glenn “Doc” Rivers was surprisingly available after the Clippers fired him on September 28th.

It took six games, but the Lakers won their 17th NBA World Championship in franchise history on Sunday night beating Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat 106-93. For me, it was real special to see Wildwood Crest native and Wildwood High School alum Frank Vogel give the shortest speech postgame after the win. Humble as always, Vogel made it to the NBA Finals twice with Indiana and lost both times to LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Now, he has LeBron on his team (along with Anthony Davis), and Vogel is a NBA Champion Head Coach!

The bad news is that owner John Middleton doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to replace Klentak and Klentak trained Ned Rice will take over as the interim GM. According to “The Team Marketing Report”, the Phillies lost $186.1 million because of no fans in 2020. Middleton gave a murky answer too when asked about the chance that the team would re-sign catcher J.T. Realmuto, calling it a “priority”, but also saying uncertainty about fans in 2021 might prevent them from doing so. The popular sentiment is that now that the Mets are owned by Steve Cohen, who’s worth $14.6 billion (with a B), that the Mets break open the bank and pay Realmuto what he wants. The Phillies have to make a decision on

Three big baseball names have passed away since I last wrote. Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford and now Joe Morgan. All three of them icons in their own way, but only Gibson was someone who I had the pleasure of having some interaction with. The Cardinals great was from Omaha, and when I worked for the FOX affiliate there, I attended and covered his annual golf tournament for a few years. It was always fun to play golf with the Hall of Famer, because he wasn’t naturally good at the sport, and would look to me for advice on how his putt broke, or what club to hit. Imagine how surreal that is, to be telling a Hall of Famer in one sport, what to do in another. “Gibby” was known to be a little cantankerous and short tempered, but I’m happy to have had some interaction with him and to have known him just a little.

Finally, we close with the Flyers as we’ll first address the NHL draft, where they took a “shoot-first” right winger Tyson Foerster with the 23rd pick overall. The 6-1, 194-pound winger had 36 goals and 80 points in 62 OHL games last season. In the second round, they took Emil Andrae, a small but quick defenseman from Sweden. The Flyers didn’t have

a third round pick, but made a trade with Tampa to move up to the start of the 4th round and select Zayde Wisdom at 94 overall. GM Chuck Fletcher admitted he was surprised when Andrae and Wisdom were available and “scrambled” to make the deal with Tampa when Wisdom was still on the board. Let’s hope that move works out. Hockey draft picks tend to take a while to mature, so we probably won’t see the fruits of this until a few years down the road.

getting frustrated as players were moving like crazy, but none of them coming TO the Flyers until they finally signed free agent defenseman Erik Gustafsson to fill the Matt Niskanen void on Monday. Big names moved on Day #1 like Henrik Lundqvist to Washington and former Flyer Wayne Simmonds to Toronto.

The Flyers lost bottom-six winger Tyler Pitlick to Arizona, which is a shame because he had some of the best energy of anyone for the Flyers in the postseason. Derek Grant also went back to Anaheim, but the Flyers didn’t make a move until Monday when most of the dust settled.

Getting Gustafsson on a one-year, $3 million dollar contract gives the Flyers a top-six defenseman and they also could leave him open to the expansion draft when Seattle joins the league after next season.

In addition to being a top-six defenseman, Gustafsson is expected to be used on the power play.

The Flyers now have about $5.7 million in salary-cap space, but still need to sign Nolan Patrick and Phil Myers.

On the local front, I have to give a shout-out to Holy Spirit running back Patrick Smith for his game last Saturday against Cedar Creek in Egg Harbor City. Smith carries the ball 30 times for 362 yards and FOUR

touchdowns in a 41-0 win over the Pirates. Smith’s day will go down as one of the best ever by a South Jersey running back. Philadelphia Eagles running back Corey Clement holds the record with 478 yards for Glassboro against Gloucester in 2012. That same night, Wesley Hills of Wildwood ran for 452 yards against Maple Shade. Hills was most recently with the Detroit Lions and hopes to be back on an NFL roster soon.

I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I was sad to learn that all 536 U.S. locations of the Regal Movie Theater chain closed quickly last Thursday. I had $45 in Regal Gift Cards and hurried out to the Hamilton Commons location in Mays Landing to see a final movie and spend all the money on those cards. More than 7,000 screens are now dark as movie theaters are really struggling right now. Which is why I’ll take a second to plug the Tilton Square Theater again and remind you to get out and support a LOCALLY run movie theater!

Lastly, I’ve begun watching “The Boys” on Amazon Prime, and trust me, this is not your family friendly superhero series for sure! Each episode comes with several 18-plus audience warnings, and “The Boys” is set in a universe where individuals with super powers are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for the powerful corporation Vought International, which markets

and monetizes them. Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant and corrupt. The series primarily focuses on two groups: the Seven, Vought's premier superhero team, and the eponymous Boys, vigilantes looking to bring down Vought and its corrupt superheroes. I’m enjoying it, but will save my final review for when I complete Season Two. As always, I’ll close with a reminder to please don’t forget to wear your mask when you’re out in public and interacting with others. Be kind, wear your mask, and be patient. Discover Estell Manor Park

Including an Artesian Well and ruins of the Bethlehem Loading Company

E

stell Manor Park is located along the Egg Harbor River, and is part of the Atlantic County Park system. The park and surrounding area of Estell Manor has a long history and has been used for many things.

Estell Manor was originally owned by the Estell family, who bought the land in the 1820s and soon became involved in the growing glass industry. The Estells built a glassworks factory here in 1826. The Estell family’s wealth grew rapidly and they

became involved in timber, shipbuilding, and farming.

Estell’s glassworks closed in 1877, and remains of the buildings still remain on park property.

In 1918, a munitions factory for World War I was built in this area to supply the massive needs of the war effort. The munitions factory, called the Bethlehem Loading Company, built a massive factory complex along the river, along with housing for over 3,000 employees. This town eventually became known as Belcoville, shortened from Bethlehem Loading Company. This town included a bowling alley, town hall, school, bank, and other stores to support the workers. In addition to the 3,000 plant workers, Belcoville also supported 1,100 soldiers and military barracks to guard the plant.

Helping Families on the Real Road to Recovery

M

r. and Mrs. Peterson work hard to provide for their family, respect their neighbors, and, like the thousands of other families in Atlantic County, made sacrifices to help flatten the curve to keep our communities healthy and safe. And, like everyone else, they are anxious to get through this pandemic. Unfortunately, Trenton’s bureaucracy is living up to Yogi Berra’s observation, "You've got to be careful if you don't know where you are going because you just might get there." From not paying unemployment benefits to making families wake up at the crack of dawn just to wait in line for a driver’s license to raising the gas tax and tolls, Trenton clearly doesn’t know where it’s going, which is why I voted against Trenton’s bureaucracy and will continue to fight to put our Atlantic County families on a real road to recovery.

The Petersons adjusted to the pandemic by wearing masks, keeping socially distant, and even postponing their daughter’s wedding as ways to responsibly protect themselves and others from spreading the coronavirus. When our casinos closed in March, the Petersons tightened their belts while they were furloughed for over three months. Of course, at the

time, they trusted the system to help them make it through this difficult time.

But when the Petersons applied for unemployment, the system didn’t pay their benefits for over two months. It's atrocious to make families struggling to make ends meet to wait for help when they need it the most, especially from a system they paid into for times like these.

To fix the unemployment debacle and make the bureaucracy start working for our families, I voted to direct $50 million to get unemployment benefits into our families’ hands quicker.

More importantly, the bill holds the Department of Labor accountable by mandating it to tell us how it plans to promptly pay our families the benefits they are entitled to.

The Petersons have a son who depends on a restaurant job to help afford his college expenses. Yet, many of our local mom and pop restaurants were closed without any follow up

direction or support from Trenton.

Now, many establishments are on the brink of closing permanently.

Atlantic County’s mom and pop establishments won’t be able to survive forever on take out, outdoor dining, and limited indoor alone. To provide hope and sustain local businesses and their employees, I sponsored a bi-partisan bill, passed by the Legislature, throwing a financial lifeline to our restaurants and bars until they can offer full services when things return to normal and can hire more of our families.

As if being out of work for over two month wasn’t bad enough, Trenton made it difficult for the Petersons to drive to work once the casinos reopened. First, they had to get up at the crack of dawn and wait in line at the MVC agency for hours to renew a driver's license and, second, they are being hit with higher tolls and taxes after their bank accounts were drained during their unemployment.

When the MVC agencies were shut down in the spring, Trenton had four months to figure out a way to make the system customer friendly by the time they re-opened in July.

Yet, Trenton forced many of our families and seniors to wait nearly a full day in line. To straighten this debacle out, I sponsored the bi-partisan law requiring the MVC to extend the time that a stored driver’s license photo can be used from 8 years to 12 years and indefinitely for our seniors. Further, to make it easier for older drivers, the law also allows for agencies to reserve certain times to provide appointments for seniors during the pandemic.

It doesn’t make sense to the Petersons why Trenton raised tolls during a pandemic while automatically increasing the gas tax just because families are driving less. I voted against the gas tax and fought against raising tolls in a pandemic because these increases only add to the financial burden of our families during this pandemic-created recession and will make it harder for our region’s economy to recover.

In the beginning, our Atlantic County families willingly accepted making sacrifices to help flatten the curve for the greater good. Instead of rewarding their trust, Trenton issued mandates, over my objections, without sharing with our families any clue where the State was headed or helping our families with the consequences of those mandates.

Our families and retirees deserve meaningful help and to have their faith rewarded with common sense solutions to put us back on the path to normalcy.

Meet Shawn Rock, Rapper of "Atlantic City"

ina: Hi everyone, this is Dina Guzzardo for Shore Local Entertainment.

Today we are talking to Shawn Rock, who has become an ambassador for Atlantic City with his new uber popular rap album called “Atlantic City”. Recently, Shawn also won at the Elephant Talk Indie Music Awards in the hip hop category.

Dina: Before we talk about some of your current projects, I'd like to know a little bit more about what inspired you to get into the music business.

Shawn: Actually, it was my mom.

She used to write poetry when I was a little kid, and she kind of taught me how to write poems. And then in my pre-teen years, I started writing poems to music. At that time, rap was getting pretty big worldwide. And I just kind of mixed the two together.

Dina: I've heard of you referred to as the Don or the Kingpin of the Inkpen. How did you get those nicknames?

Shawn: Well, the Don is kind of like, I watch a lot of the old school, you know, not that I promote violence or crime, but a lot of the gangster movies. You always have the boss or in the Latino community, you have the El Patron. So I was like, you know what? I'm just going to be the Don of my music. I'm going to be the boss every song that I write. So, I actually own all my own material.

Dina: Wow. That's pretty awesome.

Shawn: And Kingpin of the Inkpen, that was just a play on words like, you know, everybody wants to be the best or the greatest.

It's another word they use called the GOAT, which is the “greatest of all time”. I said, I don't want to be none of the things. I'm just going to be the Kingpin of the Inkpen because my music is my product. So, how can

I say this? I don't want to promote drugs because I'm far from that. But if music is my drug and I move my music like a product and then I would be a Kingpin.

Dina: So, by now everyone has heard your rap “Atlantic City”. You were rallying to have this song adopted is Atlantic City's official

anthem. How's that progress going?

Shawn: A slow, grueling one. But it's getting there. I guess it's just got to reach the right person, with the right power.

Dina: There's a petition out there that people can sign.

Shawn: Yeah. It is online on my Facebook, which is www.facebook. com/shawnrock82. If you go on my profile and on my news feed, you'll see me repost it every now and then, but it's up there.

You just click it and sign it and you know, hopefully I can get in a situation to take that down to city hall or wherever the powers may be.

Dina: That would be awesome. I love the video; I love the song. I can't stop listening to it. So, why did you want to write your rap about Atlantic City?

Shawn: I knew we didn't have an anthem, or at least a rap anthem,

So, I was like, well, let me create a song for the hometown, but make it clean where everybody can listen to it. So, of course, you see, there's no cursing, it is really clean.

There's a lot of history about the city.

Dina: Nina Blue is your co-star in the song and she's incredible. How did that come up? How did you meet her?

Shawn: Well, actually, long story short, real quick, I had “Atlantic City” done before I released it to the masses publicly. I had the song for about a year just sitting in my computer because I wanted to find the right singer with the right voice. So, the lyrics were already done. There was no hook on it, just my rap verses. So, one weekend I was up in Long Island and I was at a showcase just in the audience, watching other people perform. The person I was with grabbed me when she [Nina] came on stage and started singing. They were just like “Yo, do you hear her voice? It is amazing!” So, I'm like, all right, let me really listen…because I wasn't really listening. I was there. But when he said that I had to focus in and after three seconds, I was like, that's the

one! We've got to get her information!

Dina: Yeah, she's pretty incredible.

Shawn: Aw man, she came down to the studio and she started singing the hook. I just had my hair stand up and the goosebumps. I knew that was it. I knew that was the right decision.

Dina: Is there a certain artist or group that has influenced your journey as a musician?

Shawn: I've always been a huge Jay-Z and Nas fan and rap. But I'm influenced by anything. I grew up with my mom and my stepdad and they listen to a lot of Motown and R&B, stuff like that. You know, a lot of old school legends. Michael Jackson, of course, stuff like that. So, I'm influenced by anything good, to be honest with you.

Dina: Recently you released the songs “Church” and “Kingpin of the Inkpen”. Shawn, your lyrics are so incredibly creative and well written.

How do you get the inspiration for these songs?

Shawn: Oh, this is the million-dollar question that I never have a right answer to. I go in the studio, I hear the music, which is just the instrumental

or whatever the guy makes me - the producer. I tell him I want a beat that's mid-tempo, fast tempo, slow tempo.

So, at this point I'm in a studio. I have no words. I have no idea what's going to happen. I just hear the beat. If the beat moves me, normally within the first a minute of listening to it, the words just start coming. The sentences start forming in my head and I have to hurry up and grab a pen and paper and start writing it down, so I won't forget them.

Dina: What is your ultimate goal?

Where do you see yourself in like

Shawn: Hopefully, in five years, because it’s the sooner of the two, I hope to be at least, maybe if not a worldwide name, maybe a mega superstar. I don't know. But I'm trying and the way it is going, if I keep working and keep focused and stay positive, it can happen.

Dina: Are you pursuing record deals?

Shawn: I mean, right now, I'm just doing everything on my own, and the buildup, which is what we call the buzz. I'm pretty much, in the world of business, I'm building my resume, so to speak. So, I can take it to these labels and they can see my body of work, my you know, my resume.

Dina: They do say that music is in the genes, and your son is starting to get into the music business as well?

Shawn: Yeah.

Dina: What is his involvement with your current projects, and does he have any projects of his own?

Shawn: Well, he started out, he just came to me one day and was like,

“Dad, I want to make a song.” I'm like, “What? I've never seen you write a lyric in your life!” So, I said, OK, and I went and bought all the studio equipment, and he's been learning. He's been teaching himself how to record and everything. So, he is working on a project, and we actually have done a little something special for him. He asked me to do a song with him, so I'm working on that with him too.

But I'm just excited because I never forced him to do anything, he did it on his own.

Dina: So, the project you're working on with him, did he write those lyrics?

Shawn: Yeah, he writes all his own lyrics, which is pretty amazing to me.

At fourteen years old, he is writing better than I did at fourteen.

Dina: Smoking a cigar allows people to relax. For some, it inspires creativity. For others, it's a symbol

of status. What does smoking cigars mean to you?

Shawn: I like it. Well, OK, let me be honest. Growing up as a kid, I always thought it was cool. First and foremost, it was. It was like all the cool guys, my uncles, my grandfathers, all the cool guys in my family. Then I used to smoke cigarettes and I had to get away from that. It was messing up my vocal cords. So, I was like, well, let me try a cigar. Let me get into that. So, it really is really like a calm, relaxing thing. You know, it helps me vibe out. I write some of my music while I'm smoking it because it helps me think better. I just love the thrill and, you know, it's just relaxing, and it takes me away from everything that's going on, on the outside.

Dina: What's your favorite smoke?

Shawn: Right now, I would probably say, because I'm into the flavored

cigars a lot. So, I would say it has to be the Fat Bottom Betty by Drew Estates is my number one. I probably have 50 those things in my humidor.

Dina: Oh you are?! So, I know things have changed since COVID, but now the venues are opening up slowly, where can your fans catch you live?

Shawn: Let me see. I don't have a show lined up yet. I do have some appearances coming up. I have two award ceremonies coming up. I don't know the exact location of them yet.

I'm still waiting for the information.

The Arts are Back In Atlantic City The Light with Raymond Tyler

everal important venues and organizations are back to providing spaces and opportunities for artists in Atlantic City.

The title of my column this week is a little deceptive. To say that “The arts are back in Atlantic City” would make one think that at some point the arts had left. “One” would be wrong.

Although recent events and health concerns had closed every public place up to but not including The Boardwalk, artists and art never stopped.

The Atlantic City Arts Commision under the leadership of Donna Shay continues to have public monthly meetings. The meetings are done through Zoom for the time being, however the commission (of which I am a member) continues to be the voice for The Arts in Atlantic City.

The Atlantic City Arts Commission website www.AtlanticCityArt.org is a great resource for artists throughout South Jersey.

The Atlantic City Arts Foundation/ 48 Blocks (www.AtlanticCityArtsFoundation.org) has had to adapt as well. Under the leadership of Joyce Hagen the annual summer event 48 Blocks Atlantic City went from a weekend community

celebration of the arts to a thoughtful virtual celebration. I was super proud to be interviewed and recognized as an important artist in AC/SJ for their “48 Blocks Meet The Artist Series.” I also got the opportunity to host a poetry discussion with two great poets Emari DiGiorgio and Cole Eubanks.

So while The Arts Commision and The The Arts Foundation both pressed on...so did artists everywhere. I can tell you about film makers that produced “zoom” films and others that shot through social distancing guidelines.

There are poets and authors who finished those books they had been working on. In studios, homes and apartments...visual artists have continued to pour out their souls on paper, canvas and clay.

Sadly, after the death of George Floyd and the rebirth of Black Lives Matter, many more artists of color (including myself) have begun to make sure our voices and visions are no longer marginalized within the larger arts community of Atlantic City and South Jersey.

Like that I am out of space. However, my next column will continue this theme by sharing the comeback plans and success of The Arts Garage, The African American Heritage Museum and The AC Free Public Library.

Gold and Silver Mischief Shore Collectibles

I

’ve always been concerned that there exists a certain amount of manipulation in the metals markets done to benefit certain individuals or companies. Silver has been of particular concern because of its’ low price relative to gold and other precious metals, thus requiring a smaller investment to affect the market price. That, plus the fact it is more of a “local” metal verses gold and the others which have more of an international following by virtue of central banks of some countries adding to their gold reserves to bolster the value or offset the depreciation of their currency.

An example being Russia, who, when sanctions were imposed against them after their military action against the Ukraine, they converted a large number of rubles into gold to offset the rubles’ depreciation.

My first experience with metal manipulation occurred in 1980 during the first gold and silver rush. Although not manipulation in the true sense, it did result in a dramatic rise in the value of silver. The Hunt brothers, 2 rich Texas oilmen, decided to corner the silver market by buying all physical silver,

which as time went on and the available physical silver supply declined, caused the price to rise. Their reason for buying all physical silver was that when contracts on the commodities exchange came due, and the owners of the contracts wanted silver, the Hunt brothers could set their price because they owned all the silver. That played out well for a while, driving silver prices to $49 an ounce, but then the government, slow to see what was happening, stopped the Hunt brothers from buying more silver by passing a law that only silver sales could take place, not purchases, causing the price of silver to plummet. That law was eventually repealed, allowing normal market activity to resume and the Hunt brothers went into bankruptcy.

As I said, I have always been concerned about someone having the ability to manipulate the market, and silver has been the metal I was most concerned about. I guess I underestimated the extent others would go and the resources available because J.P Morgan, that huge banking concern has just paid a fine of $920 million imposed by the Justice Department to settle a suit that their employees engaged in an activity known as

“spoofing”. Spoofing has been illegal since the Dodd-Frank Act which was written in response the Financial Crisis of 2008.

Evidently the metal traders at J. P. Morgan didn’t get the memo.

Spoofing is defined as when someone, in this case metal traders employed by J.P. Morgan, would place large and continuing buy orders, which would drive the prices up, or corresponding large sell orders, which would drive the prices down. It seems they did this with all, gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Spoofing is, that although these buy and sell orders were generated, the traders had no intention of completing them. No investment required. But when the prices rose, they would do an actual sale, and hence profiting from an increase, and when prices fell, they would purchase at artificially low prices.

Evidently this practice has been going on for at least 8 years and has involved 15 J.P. Morgan traders. The difficulty faced by regulators has been the volume of data involved in tracing the illegal activity, but recent developments in data analysis and spurred by claims of investors who lost money thinking they were following a market trend when in fact they were betting against a stacked deck. It is estimated investors lost over $300 million because of the activities of these traders. And civil suits are sure to follow the admission by J. P. Morgan that

their traders were involved in spoofing.

It seems my concern about silver being susceptible to manipulation was a little conservative, since all of the metals prices were manipulated by these traders, but I think investors can be confident as we go forward, the Justice Department now has the tools to ferret out manipulation.

Cycling for beginners and older adults

ycling is one of the best exercises for aging bodies and beginners. I’m a huge fan of cycling and have been teaching indoor cycling for the past 12 years. There’s nothing cooler than a heart pumping, music blaring, high energy cycle class. Gyms and fitness centers are highly popular because of such classes.

The bikes track mileage, calories burned, and pulse. A workout typically involves a simulation of a real outdoor ride with climbing, sprinting, and coasting. The cycling varies between sitting and standing, and the speed, resistance, and intensity levels can be adapted to your skill level. It's an aerobic activity that gets your heart pumping, improves endurance and heart health, lowers blood pressure and stress levels, and strengthens hip and leg muscles (the gluteus muscles, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves).

Another benefit is that indoor cycling is low impact, so it's the perfect exercise for people with joint pain. Because cycling is a low-impact sport, it reduces strain on the joints for those who just can’t do that high impact pound anymore. Biking can actually slow down the aging process. Who doesn’t want that? If you have balance problems, an indoor cycling class can be a safe alternative to other forms of cardiovascular exercise because you exercise while seated. If your balance is good enough to get on and off the bike safely, then you should be good to go.

However, if you feel unsteady when mount-

ing or dismounting, a stationary recumbent bike might be a better option for you. I miss teaching indoor cycling so much but I know plenty of gyms that are currently offering cycle classes outdoors.

Did you know that riding a bike offers a whole host of additional health benefits besides the physical perks? Aside from using your rides to get in your necessary dose of exercise, there are other health benefits you get by spending more time in the saddle. Cycling can boost your brainpower and help to stave off Alzheimer’s in the elderly. Faster recovery for older adults with knee issues, back pain and osteoarthritis was recognized when cycling was introduced to their routines. This just proves that as we get older, taking time to exercise, even just spinning a few minutes a day can be greatly beneficial. Cycling is also great for your heart and can lower your blood pressure. Weight loss is one of the big benefits of cycling and older adults who are diabetic can drop visceral fat (harmful fat that can increase the risk of health problems such as heart attack and stroke) if exercise along with diet is part of their routine.

Cycling improves your endurance and stamina. It is a low impact, low-stress exercise, which makes it ideal for so many whether you're older, have injuries or a beginner to exercise. It has so many benefits for everyone.

If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend you give it a chance. It may take your derrière a little time to get used to it (and they always make seat cushions or padded shorts) but once you try it, you’ll be hooked. Happy trails!

Glutathione – The Body’s “Master Antioxidant”

lutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamine.

The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains. Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule. It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury and other heavy metals. Normally Glutathione is recycled in the body -- except when the toxic load becomes too great.

That explains why we are in such trouble.

The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential hygiene. This is the same problem I see in so many of our patients. They are missing this critical gene and they descend into disease as a result. Let me explain how this happens...

Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot po-
