This is very good news. We have made it to the final months of the dreadful 2020. Less than 100 more days to go!

October offers the real fall feel. There is no more denying the chill in the air and the earlier and earlier sunsets. The holidays, now upon us are a wild card. Do we trick or treat with masks on top of our masks? We can't let little hands grab candy from a bowl, as in years past, right? I'm already envisioning the zoom screen at the Thanksgiving table.

Sigh. Albeit different, it's still a beautiful time of year with much to celebrate. Check out all the seasonal events on page 12 for all your weekend plans.

The ingenuity and adaptability of our schools and businesses never fail to inspire me. Ocean City’s Block Party is just one example. The Fall Block party is a huge event each year that draws thousands. Rather than cancel the event due to crowd restrictions, they have created new ways for people to participate, shop and engage virtually. Read more about all they are offering in the feature on page 28 by Steffen Klenk.

One of my greatest joys is reading a really good book. We thought you might enjoy that too, so we have added a new column called Shore Reads which will recommend and spotlight a variety of books and authors. Our goal is for this to be interactive. Summing Up Our Summer Weather

D

oesn’t it always seem like winters last forever and summers go by so fast?

Something tells me that may never ring truer than during a pandemic. It’s actually true that all seasons are not created equal, in terms of length that is. But contrary to popular opinion, it is summer that is actually our longest season each year, averaging around 94 days long.

Spring is next at 93 days and then fall at around 90 days. And believe it or not, it’s those seemingly long, hard winters that are actually the shortest season according to the calendar, averaging around 89 days in length.

Of course, meteorologists have to be different, and some would say difficult, and we have our own definition of the seasons. Meteorological summer is simply the months of

June, July, and August. Meteorological fall is the months of September through November, winter runs from December through February, and so forth. And when we look back at the statistics and evaluate how hot, cold, wet, or dry a season is, it’s normally the meteorological seasons we are looking at. Of course, for many in South Jersey, another popular definition of summer would be the time bounded by Memorial Day and Labor Day. Since the summer of 2020 is now officially in the books, no matter how you define the summer season, how did the meteorological summer of 2020 rank? In a nutshell, it was hot, humid, and wet. Of course, you already knew that, as you sweated through it. But at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY), where South Jersey weather records are kept, the summer of 2020 ranks as the third wettest and tied for the second hottest summer on record, and records go back over 60 years.

Let’s take them in turn, and start with the heat. This summer’s heat didn’t quite rival the oppressive and unbearable back to back summers of 2010 and 2011, when temperatures repeatedly soared over 100 degrees.

However, we managed to rack up 31 days when highs surged past 90 degrees, well above our average of around 18 days of 90° heat in a “typical” summer. We tried to keep cool through two heat waves, both in July, by far the hottest month of the summer of 2020. Interestingly enough, of the top 10 hottest summers on record at ACY, 9 of the 10 have come since 2006. And while I won’t dive into the climate change or global warming debate at this point, I will state the obvious. The last 10 to 15 years have consistently featured hotter and in many cases wetter summers than what was “normal” last century.

It actually makes sense that a hot and humid summer is also a wet summer, as heat and humidity fuel showers and thunderstorms, which fill up the rain gauges. The summer of 2020 brought just shy of 20 inches of rain to South Jersey, the third wettest on record and behind only the summers of 1997 and 2000. Severe thunderstorms were frequent, and there was even that dreaded “d” word, a derecho on June 3, that caused widespread wind damage and power outages. Unlike the historic derecho of June 2012 where Atlantic County was ground zero for damage, this year’s worst fury was just to our north through Burlington and Ocean counties. However, Tropical Storm Isaias had all of South Jersey in its crosshairs, bringing widespread 70 mile-per-hour wind gusts and spawning tornadoes over Cape May and Ocean counties when it struck on August 4.

My personal observation, and I’m sure I’m not alone, was that it was

one of the stickiest summers ever, as we spent the better part of July and August in a stubbornly and sauna-like tropical air mass. Humidity is one weather variable we don’t rank or keep official records for, so perhaps our electric bills can serve as proof to my claim.

Are we officially done with the heat and humidity, what I like to call the “summer muggies", now that it's fall? The answer is most likely, but it can still occasionally get hot in early October. The latest 90-degree day on record at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) is October 7, a scorching Sunday back in 2007. But perhaps even more notable was what happened last October, when record shattering heat sent the temperature soaring to 96 degrees at ACY, easily the hottest temperature ever recorded in any October on record.

However, that’s obviously a rare occurrence, almost like a winter without hardly any snow.

Oh wait. Didn’t we just have one of those too? But let’s save any talk of a winter outlook for another column and enjoy the 90 days of a hopefully fantastic fall.

Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

The Pumpkin Craze is Back

ith the return of fall comes cooler weather, football, Halloween, and jacko-lanterns. Even pumpkin pies are hitting store shelves once again.

Pumpkins are such a major part of the season that there’s a tradition of consuming anything pumpkin! How did this tradition start?

Back in January 2003, Starbucks developed a pumpkin spice latte drink. This came after the success of seasonal cold-weather drinks like the Eggnog Latte and Peppermint Mocha. Between 2003 and 2015, the iconic beverage had been sold more than 200 million times.

From that day forward, a new trend swept the globe. Every year, pumpkin spice items hit store shelves across the country in many forms.

Researchers from the Institute of Food Technologists suggest people associate pumpkin flavor with the nostalgia that comes from the holidays and being with family.

Starbucks, among other corporations, has created a flavor that tastes and smells exactly like fall and Halloween every single time you order it. Here’s an interesting fact: in its original inception, the pumpkin spice latte did not have any pumpkin in its recipe! The average mix of pumpkin pie spice contains nearly 340 flavor compounds, while most pumpkin spice lattes contain only 10% of natural blends.

With a unique blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, it’s no surprise that pumpkin has an aromatic flavor guaranteed to transport you into the season. I’d like to offer up several pumpkin food recipes you can try with friends or relatives.

Pumpkin soup is a simple, satisfying meal to go with any cool day.

For this recipe, you’ll need four small pumpkins, 15 ounces of pumpkin pu-

ree, 11 ounces of butternut squash puree, 2 cups of chicken broth, ¼ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ¼ tsp of nutmeg, ½ tsp of pepper, 12 ounces of evaporated milk and ¼ cup of sour cream. Slice the top of the pumpkins and scoop out the seeds (you will use the pumpkins later for presentation). Combine the pumpkin puree, broth, squash and seasonings, and stir. Add evaporated milk and let simmer for 15 minutes.

Once completed, pour the mixture directly into the small pumpkins and garnish with sour cream and cinnamon.

If you’re looking for a tasty snack the entire family will love, try making roasted pumpkin seeds. Take 1 ½ cups of raw whole pumpkin seeds, 2 teaspoons of melted butter, and a pinch of salt. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees, toss all ingredients into a bowl and mix together. Spread the seeds onto a baking sheet and bake for approximately 45 minutes or until golden brown, stirring on occasion. Cool and serve. This delicious, healthy snack is only 83 calories per serving.

Mums the Word for Belhaven Band

very year, our South Jersey area gets a beauty treatment for fall. Colorful mums from the Belhaven Middle School Band in Linwood grace porches, entryways, and gardens, marking the start of the autumn season.

Throughout the year, the band holds various fundraisers, such as selling mums (chrysanthemums) in the fall, to support their activities. Students can earn money towards band trips that have included Historic Williamsburg, Boston, Niagara Falls, and Disney World. According to band director Nancy Robinson, of the many fundraising opportunities that students normally have throughout the year to earn money for their trip, the mum sale is by far the biggest fundraiser.

“People tell me they don’t even have to ‘sell’ them - people call and ask if they can buy them!”, said Robinson.

This year was anything but normal. Due to the Covid-19 virus, the spring trip to Disney World had to be cancelled as well as band concerts and the scheduled trip for next spring. Band lessons and meetings have changed from in-person to virtual and most fundraisers were stopped. Fortunately, for friends, neighbors, and family of band students, the sale of mums was still permitted since the entire process took place outdoors. Though there won’t be a band trip this spring, students who sold mums can apply their earn-

Margate set to vote, pro or no on new boardwalk

Non-binding ballot question asks whether the city should take the first step in a long process

hile the nation wrestles with a contentious presidential race and the future of the Supreme Court, at least some of the attention of Margate’s residents is focused closer to home this election – on the possibility of a new boardwalk.

On this year’s ballots, a non-binding referendum asks whether the city should spend $285,000 on taking the first steps toward building a new boardwalk, continuing the walkway that now extends to the inlet at the north end of Atlantic City and stops at Margate’s border with Ventnor at Fredericksburg Avenue.

Construction of a new boardwalk would cost millions. Proponents estimate it at about $24 million, while

critics of the idea suggest it will cost far more. With the mail-in ballots for the 2020 election already arriving in shore communities, Margate is dotted with signs for and against the idea.

“It’s a very contentious issue.

There is division in the community about it,” said Glenn Klotz, one of the organizers of the push for a new boardwalk.

He would not hazard a guess as to whether the referendum has a chance.

“I hear a lot of good thing. I hear a lot of bad things,” Klotz said.

There are a few areas of broad agreement on the issue, with both supporters of building a new boardwalk and those dead set against it saying it all started with a controversial beach project.

While many towns welcome the state and federal spending on adding sand to eroding beaches, the replenishment project in 2017 added a wide swath of new sand dunes to the beach, which proved deeply unpopular in Margate. Dunes have become a standard part of shore protection projects. But many in Margate complain that the dunes were foisted up-

a number of issues with the proposal, including the need to acquire riparian rights from many property owners who legally own the beach in front of their houses.

detailed response from city officials, which laid out some of the likely costs the project would include, both in construction and ongoing maintenance. That will include lighting, security, amenities and other expenses.

“It would greatly limit the city’s ability to do other things,” said Deaney. “Financially, it’s very, very difficult to justify.”

Mayor Michael Becker was blunter.

“Very simply, we can’t afford a boardwalk right now. It’s way too expensive for us,” Becker said.

He, too, believes the committee’s estimate of $24 million drastically underestimates the cost. Even at that, though, he said the city has decided to spend $5 million to $6 million on capital projects a year, which means a boardwalk project would mean years without other capital work.

That includes long-awaited dredge projects and other improvements, he said.

“We have a lot of things we have to take care of. We have to do a lot of work to prevent future flooding in Margate. That’s number one,” Becker said.

But according to Klotz, the city finds funding for other projects, including a multiphase effort to complete a bulkhead along Amherst Avenue, including a walkway he said will function like a bayside boardwalk.

City officials say the primary focus of that project is to reduce the risk of flooding.

Klotz maintains that the city will be able to get grants to fund at least

part of the project, which he says will improve the quality of life in town and improve access to the beach, both for those who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility and for families with children in strollers.

Police patrolling the walk will make the area safe, he said, and emergency vehicles will be able to more quickly access the beach in an emergency.

Ironically, the city’s response to the boardwalk plans also raised the issue of access, stating that a twomile timber walkway would need to include openings to allow access for beach maintenance equipment and other vehicles.

Margate had a boardwalk for decades. According to Becker and others, most of it was washed away in the 1944 hurricane, a devastating storm that occurred before hurricanes were named. Another small section later washed away in a storm in the early 1960s, Becker said.

“This is not a new idea. We had a boardwalk for 37 years. Of course, that was a long time ago,” Klotz said.

“Margate is better with a boardwalk, is our motto.”

Both Becker and Klotz stressed that the referendum is not binding.

Not only does it not appropriate the millions needed to construct a boardwalk, it does not oblige the city to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars on engineering and permitting.

The city has agreed to hear what the people have to say. That means if the vote is close, Margate’s governing body still has the final word. If the vote is overwhelmingly in favor of moving forward, they may feel more pressure to take the next steps toward a Margate boardwalk.

“Then again, we’re elected to be leaders, not followers,” Becker said.

If there is strong support for a boardwalk, Deaney said, the first step will be to determine whether state officials will even allow its con-

struction. That means some spending on engineering, he said, to take a proposal to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

“The DEP won’t even sit down with you without a plan,” he said.

Klotz said a boardwalk will return part of the joy of living in Margate, giving residents and visitors a place to jog, ride their bikes, exercise or just sit in the sunshine.

“It will allow the simple pleasures to come back to that beach,” he said.

Before the beach project, he said, he would regularly walk to the street end and look out over the water.

“Today, you walk down there and all you see is a wall of sand,” Klotz said.

Dreaming of Daffodils in the Garden

s a gardener, when I think of fall, one of the first things that comes to mind is planting spring bulbs.

Visions of tulips, daffodils, and grape hyacinths inspire me to plant countless bulbs in the fall. When spring arrives and I see those beautiful spring flowers, I always wish that I had planted more.

For those that took up gardening this year, planting bulbs is a great way to keep the hobby going. They are easy to grow with a high success rate, making them the perfect project for beginner gardeners. If you have the patience to wait through the winter, you will be rewarded with beautiful blooms in spring.

For optimum effect, plant your bulbs in groups instead of single straight lines, which can look sparse.

Be sure to choose healthy bulbs that

are full and firm. Plant early, mid, and late spring varieties for a succession of color.

Tulips are among my favorite flowers, and they come in a wide array of colors and types.

From Darwin hybrid tulips and fringed tulips to double or parrot tulips, there are varieties to please every style. Because squirrels like tulips almost as much as I do, you should protect the tulip bulbs by covering them with a square of chicken wire and weighing it down with a brick or rock. Once the ground freezes, you can remove the wire.

Fortunately, squirrels are not fond of daffodils, alliums, and hyacinths. Daffodils are the very picture of spring and look lovely planted in masses.

Use them in garden borders with grape hyacinths (muscari) in front. The blue of the hyacinths will complement both yellow and white daffodils. Alliums are in the same family as garlic, onions, and leeks. They remind me of something that would be in a Dr.

Seuss book; I love their huge purple orbs that tower over the other spring flowers. Though they will attract bees and other pollinators, they are rabbit and deer-resistant.

Once you start planting spring bulbs, you’ll find the possibilities are limitless. Fight the winter blues by planting yellow winter aconite and white snowdrops. They are among the earliest bloomers and some may pop up as early as January or February. Both of these low-growing flowers will self seed and look dreamy under trees or in

The Gift of Life

Living organ donors were responsible for over 7,300 transplants in 2019.

rgan donation is one of the greatest gifts modern medical technology has offered us. What many people don’t realize is that living, healthy individuals can donate things like bone marrow, a lung or a part of a lung, parts of the pancreas, parts of the intestines, a lobe of their liver, and the most common living donation – one of two kidneys. While many living donors are blood relatives, this is not a prerequisite to living organ donation. Thousands of lives are saved every year as family members, neighbors, and strangers offer “the gift of life.”

For South Jersey local, Al Nicolosi, a living donor would be a life-saving gift. Al has been an active member of the South Jersey community for several decades.

Al, along with his brother, own Nicolosi Catering in West Deptford. He is an active contributor to local food banks, a regular volunteer for charitable organizations, and an involved member of the community. Most of all, Al is a husband, father, grandfather, and beloved family man.

When none of his family members turned

out to be a living donor match, Al’s wife took to various media outlets to find what the Nicolosi family hopes will be their gift of life story. Al’s blood type is B negative and could be a match with anyone who is in the B or O blood group.

Over 115,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for an organ transplant. Annually, over 6,000 living kidney donations are made possible by selfless individuals willing to give a life-saving gift. There are many misconceptions about living organ donation including the idea that there would be a great cost involved to the donor. Fortunately, the cost is absorbed by either the recipients insurance company or in combination with a charitable organization. There is no cost to donate an organ – that is why it is called the gift of life.

Kidney exchange programs have been made available to help living donors find a suitable match. Kidney swaps or exchanges offer an opportunity for those who want to donate their kidney but may not be a match for their loved one to swap kidneys with another suitable donor/ recipient. standable fear. It is important that a living donor makes an informed and willful decision. For most kidney donors, recovery is approximately 4-6 weeks. Aside from the physical recovery time, most of that time is often spent feeling elated about being able to save a life. There is an abundance of support offered to living donors including from the recipient family, the doctors and follow up care, as well as social communities set up to support living donors before and after surgery.

Before making the final decision to donate an organ, it is encouraged that you

speak with your local transplant center, have in-depth conversations with your family, and consider the benefits and risks in entirety. Just know that if it is a decision that you are leaning towards, there are people ready to love and support you through the process. There is nothing quite as special as the gift of life.

An Elephant sized beachfront stay in Margate

ecently, I was one of the very few who got to experience Lucy The Elephant, staged beautifully by a team of Airbnb designers, for three couples who were lucky enough to call Lucy home for a night.

As the last guest left, I sat down with Director of the Save Lucy Committee, Rich Helfant, to get all the details and learn the ins and outs of how this seemingly massive Elephant sized undertaking came about.

Erica Hoffman: Rich, walk me through how this whole thing came about.

Rich Helfant: Jason Tell, our Board Vice President, is an Airbnb host, so he gets their publication. One day, I was flipping through it, and I see Airbnb’s “overnight at... “experiences. I saw The Goodyear Blimp, The Oscar Mayor Weiner Mobile, Barbie’s Dream House �

EH: Who contacted who?

RH: Little did I know Liz DeBold Fusco, one of Airbnb’s head Public Relations people, lives in New Jersey and is familiar with Lucy. Unbeknownst to us, she was already promoting Lucy to be the next “overnight at...” experience to Airbnb’s hire-ups. �

At the same time, unbeknownst to her, we were also pitching Lucy to Airbnb. It was perfection. We met over the phone, we all loved the concept and decided to move forward with it. EH: How was it working with the guests and Airbnb?

RH: It’s been the most incredibly pleasant and rewarding experience in every aspect, but mainly it was the people we got to work with at Airbnb that was extraordinary. They are 100% the real deal. They lived up to their commitment to Lucy. Even when COVID-19 hit, and we had to postpone the stays, they honored their commitment to donate to Lucy, and did. Their donation kept us solvent until we were able to reopen.

EH: And now six months later, the stays happened, you just checked out the last guest about an hour ago, how did everything go?

RH: It was an absolute success, a win-win for everyone.

EH: Did you have much interaction with the guests?

RH: We tried to limit our interaction with them. Airbnb sent a concierge who stayed two blocks away.

We had a Lucy employee staying overnight in the gift shop, so the guests had access to whatever they could need or want whenever they needed or wanted it, without being “supervised”.

RH: They had an overwhelming experience, and they got a massive bang for their buck. They dined in margate restaurants; they were brought breakfast from 7311 Ventnor Avenue. They got goodie bags from Lucy, The Margate Business Association, and even the State Division of Travel and Tourism.

The best part, Last night, when the guests came back from dinner, they got to walk in and yell, “Lucy, I’m Home!” (Ala Desi Arnaz); how many times can you say that and mean it?

EH: You guys gave such a fantastic experience to people; what did you get out of this experience?

RH: As far as the stays themselves, they weren’t a moneymaker for Lucy, which isn’t why we did it.

We did it for the marketing value, and the marketing value was beyond our wildest dreams. Lucy was on Page one of the New York Times... we got around five million dollars worth of advertising, who can afford that? We got that because of Airbnb, and for that, we’re forever grateful.

They brought Lucy to every corner of the globe, and with Lucy’s help, they put smiles on people’s faces in time when there’s not much to smile about.

EH: Do you see yourself doing this again?

RH: If we were to do it again it would be for a fundraising effort for us. Obviously, our mission is to raise money to sustain Lucy and preserve her. We would have to put this undertaking on our Director of Education and Social Media, Jeremy Bingaman.

case, we might consider it, but we would never do it without Airbnb’s partnership, we just wouldn’t. We did it because of them, and I’m very loyal. We’d be partners with them, or we wouldn’t do it.

EH: So, it’s not off the table?

RH: If we can see how much people would be willing to pay to stay inside the worlds largest Elephant, it seems like it would work, and be worth the time to make it a successful fundraiser; I could see us doing it maybe once a year in the offseason as

Sunday. It will be furnished through the end of the year, so even though you may not have gotten a chance to sleep inside of her, you will still be able to enjoy and take in the high level of style and detail she offers.

Extra Points with Pete

y the time you read this, it will be October, and in a normal year, that means high school football, college football and the NFL. However, in 2020, it means the Stanley Cup Finals, the NBA Finals, the MLB playoffs and more, all at once!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have lost one game and tied another. The Phillies somehow managed to miss the playoffs. The Sixers have seen yet another prominent name enter the mix for their head coaching job.

A coach that is in the NBA Finals has local ties. The Flyers re-sign a few key players, and on the local level, an important charity golf event hits a milestone.

From the entertainment world, I watched a documentary on Netflix that I highly recommend. I also caught a new twist on an old detective char-

acter that is excellent as well. Plus, I read an outstanding book that you should buy for the Eagles fan in your life. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as they lost 37-19 to the Rams at home and then followed that up with a 23-23 tie at home to the Cincinnati Bengals. That puts the Birds at 0-2-1 after three games, and I honestly think they could be 0-5-1 after six…! The next three games are at San Francisco, at the Steelers and home with the Baltimore Ravens. Things are not going to get any easier for the Eagles right now. ● One of their biggest problems has been the play of QB Carson Wentz. Now in year five with the Eagles, Wentz seems to have regressed as he threw two interceptions against the Rams, and another two against the Bengals.

Not only is Wentz turning the ball over, but he’s doing it in crucial moments and really is hurting the team. Wentz has a passer rating of 63.9, the worst in the NFL among starting quarterbacks. He has thrown six interceptions to only three touchdowns so far. Not what

you want to see out of a guy that’s about to make his 60th NFL start on Sunday night in San Francisco!

The Eagles problems are not just with Carson Wentz though. On defense, the Birds were gashed for 191 yards on the ground by the Rams. The defensive front four hadn’t recorded a sack in two games before they matched up with the Bengals and racked up a whopping eight sacks. And still lost! In the Rams game, it was tight end Tyler Higbee who killed them.

had 10 catches for 125 yards. The Eagles defense is a problem as well.

The final cherry on top of this Eagles “sundae” is coaching. In the Rams game, Doug Pederson was outcoached by Sean McVay with his motion offense and schemes.

In the Bengals game, all of Eagles nation (including me) were pretty upset that Pederson chose to accept a tie rather than try to WIN the game at the end of overtime.

Granted, a false start penalty had moved the ball back and out of FG range, but either try the kick anyway, or try to pick up the 1st down and rely on your defense to keep the Bengals off the board if you don’t get it. At least you TRY! For a coach that wrote a book about aggressive play-calling, this was the worst coaching decision I’ve seen Pederson make since he’s been the head coach.

Making matters worse for the Eagles is the fact that their injuries continue to mount. Tight end Dallas Goedert and starting corner Avonte Maddox each have ankle injuries. Goedert is really a loss

because the Eagles like to run a lot of “12” personnel and without him, they were definitely less effective on offense against the Bengals.

Combine those two injuries with DeSean Jackson nursing a hamstring issue and Jason Peters who had some fatigue issues, and the Eagles are not at 100 percent as they head to the West Coast.

My last word on the Eagles is about a GREAT book I just read called “A Bird’s-Eye View, my mostly wonderful, always unforgettable half-century with the Philadelphia Eagles”, by Leo Carlin & Paul Domowitch. For over five decades, Carlin worked as the longtime ticket director and front office mainstay. This has several folks calling for GM Matt Klentak to be fired. However, early word is that Klentak is not going to be let go.

Put me in the camp of wanting the Phillies to make a change. Klentak has had five seasons to prove his worth, and he’s responsible for assembling the WORST bullpen in all of baseball this past season. I saw a stat going into the final game of the season that the Phillies had led in 49 of the 59 games they had played to that point. Just think

about if they were able to convert ten more of those games into wins instead of blown leads? The Phillies most definitely would’ve been in the postseason, instead of home again for the playoffs!

I don’t put any blame on Joe Girardi in his first year as manager with the Phillies. He can only trot out the horses he’s given, and he was given a historically bad bullpen, which finished with a 7.06 ERA and 12 blown saves in 60 games. Now, the Phillies have to decide if they can afford to pay J.T. Realmuto and prevent him from leaving in free agency. Shortstop Didi Gregorius was also a boost this season, and is eligible for free agency. Don’t forget the Phillies failed to post a winning record despite a payroll that is just south of the luxury tax threshold at $207 million. And, there were no fans this year, so the Phillies are most definitely taking a LOSS financially this season!

Just as I sit down to write this column, the Clippers surprisingly announced they were parting ways with Doc Rivers. Rivers instantly becomes a candidate for the Sixers head coaching job. Mike D’Antoni’s name had moved ahead of Tyronn Lue in the last week or so, but now Rivers has to be added to the mix. The 58-year-old Rivers compiled a 356-208 record with the Clippers, with the top winning percentage (.631) in franchise history. Overall, Rivers has a 943681 mark in 21 seasons. He’s two victories shy of passing Bill Fitch for 10th place on the NBA all-time wins list. Rivers also led the Boston Celtics to the 2008 NBA title.

For me, he instantly moves into the top position for consideration as far as I’m concerned!

One other piece of NBA news is that the Lakers are through to the NBA Finals, so that means Wildwood Crest native and Wildwood High School alum Frank Vogel is there as well. If you want a reason to root for the Lakers instead of the Miami Heat, consider the fact that a guy from Wildwood Crest is now the head coach of the storied Lakers and trying to win a World Championship. Vogel (pictured) had his name hung in the rafters at Wildwood High a bunch of years back, and has never forgotten his Cape May County roots.

Meanwhile, the Flyers have resigned a few key players. First, they signed winger Nic Aube-Kubel to a two-year extension after his solid rookie season. Aube-Kubel

is only 24 and could’ve become a restricted free agent on October 9th. The Flyers didn’t want to see him even test the waters, so they signed him to a two-year extension that will carry a $1.075 million cap hit. The Flyers also locked up defenseman Robert Hagg, as he signs two-year deal worth $3.2 million. Hagg played in 49 of 69 regular season games, but nine of the last 10 playoff games for the Flyers as head coach Alain Vigneault elected to go with the more physical Hagg over Shayne Gostisbehere in the lineup. Hagg is only 25, so the Flyers are locking up two key, young pieces of their future.

The two biggest decisions among the remaining restricted free agents are yet to come. Oft-injured center Nolan Patrick, 22, missed the season with a migraine disorder. Phil Myers, who worked his way into a solid second defensive pairing with Travis Sanheim, is due a raise from the $678,333 he earned in 2019-20. The Flyers’ notable unrestricted free agents include goaltender Brian Elliott, forwards Tyler Pitlick, Nate Thompson, and Derek Grant, and defenseman Justin Braun.

My last sports item is on the local front, and it’s about the 20th annual “Be a HERO Campaign” Golf Tournament. I was thrilled to join Wayne Jenkins, his son Derek and Doug Heun as we finished at -10 under on a beautiful day at the Union League Avalon Course. What they’ve done to the former “SandBarrens” course is simply outstanding! And major props to Bill Elliott, Muriel Elliot, Jennifer Elliot and the rest of the folks who keep John’s memory alive while raising money

I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I watched “Challenger: The Final Flight” on Netflix last weekend. I was 15 when the space shuttle exploded on live TV and remember the tragedy well.

What I remembered the most, was that Christa McAuliffe was supposed to be the first teacher in space. Instead, just 73 seconds into the launch, about 17 percent of the American population was watching as Challenger broke apart killing all seven crew members on board. What this Netflix series does is really go deeper into the other six members of the crew, and I found it both fascinating and poignant at the same time.

Lastly, I made sure to watch the new Netflix movie release of “Enola Holmes” starring Millie Bobby Brown from “Stranger Things”.

Brown plays the younger sister of her famous brother Sherlock and her oldest brother Mycroft. If you liked Robert Downey Junior in the “Sherlock Holmes” movies in the past, you’ll also enjoy Brown

as she does her best to outwit and solve the crime. Plus, director Harry Bradbeer has Brown break the fourth wall and look directly into the camera throughout the film. I have to admit I was smiling from ear to ear when she did that and looked right into the camera while saying “The Game is Afoot!” Great stuff, I highly recommend you check it out.

Why Lose Weight?

Y

ou don’t have to slim down to your high school size to get real health benefits.

Losing just a few pounds makes a big difference. Five percent of your body weight -- 10 pounds for a 200-pound person -- can improve all kinds of health problems, and make you feel better, too. Talk to your doctor about whether it might help you.

Just 10 extra pounds add 40 pounds of pressure on your knees and other lower body joints. That can wear them out quicker. Extra fat can also cause inflammation, when chemicals in your body damage your own tissues over time, including your joints. Losing even a little weight can ease these effects.

If you keep it off, you’re much less likely to get arthritis later in life.

Older women who lost at least 5% of their body weight lowered their chances of breast cancer by 12%. There’s no such clear proof that losing weight protects you from other types, but some changes that happen when you shed pounds hint that it might. For example, overweight people who slim down have lower levels of some hormones linked to cancer, like estrogens, insulin, and androgens.

If you’re more likely to get Type 2 Diabetes, weight loss is one of two ways to prevent or delay it.

The other is moderate exercise, 30 minutes on 5 days a week. If you weigh 160 pounds, you could lose just 8-12 of them to benefit. If you already have diabetes, losing that weight can help you take less medication, keep control of your blood sugar, and lower the odds that the condition will cause other health problems.

You can lower your LDL or “bad” cholesterol with healthier food and medications. But it’s harder to raise levels of the “good” kind of cholesterol, HDL. That’s the type that clears bad LDL from your blood, so the more you have, the better.

Exercise and losing body fat can get you into the ideal HDL range: above 60 mg/dl, which lowers your odds of having heart disease.

Triglycerides are particles in your body that transport fat for storage and energy. High levels (more than 200 mg/dl) mean you’re more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

(around 150 mg/dl) if you slim down a little.

Check your blood pressure . Extra body weight makes your blood push harder against your artery walls. That makes your heart work harder, too. You can lower the pressure by about 5 points if you trim 5% from that number on the scale.

Cut your salt and eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy, and you may lower it even more.

One of the problems most I see in my practice is clients and Sleep Apnea . It’s quite common when carrying extra weight. . People who are overweight gain extra tissue in the back of their throat. When your body relaxes when you sleep, that tissue can drop down and block your airway. It makes you stop breathing over and over all night, which causes all kinds of health problems, especially for your heart. Slimming down a little can often help with sleep apnea -- sometimes enough that you can stop using the bulky breathing devices that treat it.

Body fat, especially in your belly area, gives off chemicals that make your body stop reacting to the effects of insulin, a hormone that keeps the level of sugar in your blood normal. Even though your pancreas works harder to make more insulin, your blood sugar can get too high. A little bit of weight loss can help reverse this effect.

Weight loss may help chase your blues away. Having a better body image and improved sleep may be part of the reason. Depressed people who were very overweight felt better after they lost an average of 8% of their body weight. You will

continue to feel better, even after 2 years, as long as you keep the weight off.

Get rid of inflammation! Fat cells, especially those around the belly, can release chemicals that irritate and inflame tissues all over the body. This is linked to health problems like arthritis, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Work toward a 10% weight loss goal, and you can lower the amount of these substances and cut your chances of having a serious illness.

When you’re overweight, you typically have less sex. It might be because you just don’t feel good about your body. But it also may be that you have less desire and that even when you’re in the mood, your body doesn’t respond as well. Shed a few pounds and you’ll not only feel better about yourself, you may be in the mood more often, too.

Learning to balance your diet properly , not dieting and eliminating vital nutrients is key to living a life of quality . You should be getting 30 minutes of moderate activity -- a bike ride or brisk walk, at least 5 days a week to stay in good health. To lose weight and keep it off, you may need more than that.

Also include moves to strengthen your muscles, like pushups or light weight training.

Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary Discover Upper Township's Hidden Park

et amongst the landscape of residential homes and commercial buildings along busy Route 9 in Upper Township, lies a hidden gem.

Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Cape May County Park North, is a beautiful place to visit and enjoy nature. It offers an oasis of tranquility from the busy world that surrounds it. The Sanctuary offers 1.2 miles of trails, a lake, wildlife and multiple benches and gazebos for relaxation.

The preserve is an old sand quarry, located along a former railline that ran from the mainland to Ocean City.

Later, it was purchased as a private hunting ground by the Cameron family. When the last Cameron brother couldn’t use the property any longer, he donated it to the county for a park in 1988.

The park has continually improved over the last 30 years that I have walked it. That is much in thanks to the Boy Scouts who have forged trails, and continued to make

improvements, many as Eagle Scout projects for the community. In the mid to late 90s, my family and I often saw deer there.

So much, that we referred to it as the "deer park." There were minimal trails, no benches or gazebos and little to no views of the lake.

Toda, a well-marked trail runs along the lake with benches, bench swings or gazebos at nearly every turn. On a recent visit to the park, to our delight, my husband and I spotted two rare

black swans. We also saw turtles, and a wide variety of birds, but this time, no deer. There were many people out enjoying the park on that early fall day.

One striking feature, is the pristine beauty of the park. It didn’t have a single piece of litter or graffiti. The park is open daily

9:30-4. No dogs are allowed.

However, it is very stroller and wheelchair friendly; about half the trail is paved and the other is extremely well maintained.

The ease of nature viewing makes any time spent at Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary time well spent. By following the main path straight to the end, you will reach the original Cameron House, Circa 1930, now used as the Park Office and for small displays.

The health benefits of walking Shore Fit

W

alking may be one of the easiest and most effective forms of exercise for our older adult population. Walking helps seniors meet all of their basic fitness needs.

The four areas of fitness that are beneficial as we age are, balance, endurance, strength and flexibility.

It’s a great way to get active even if your level of mobility is limited. It also doesn’t cost a dime unless you factor in sneaker cost. This is a tremendous help for people who may live on a fixed income. It boosts mental health, promotes social engagement and lowers blood sugar and decreases all types of health risks. The simple act of getting outside and engaging with others is a very important perk for those who may live alone. Routine walking improves circulation , lowers blood pressure and reduces our risk for strokes.

Getting out there for a few miles everyday is extremely beneficial in warding off disease and boosting our immune systems. This is really important as we age because older adults become more susceptible to illness and disease. I highly recommend a walking program of twenty minutes per day, five days a week.

Increase your time as you see fit, one

step at a time.

Walking is a low impact exercise which simply means that it puts less pressure on the joints. Walking actually lubricates the joints. It’s considered a whole body workout and strengthens those supportive muscles. This reduces the risk of hip fractures, arthritis and osteoporosis ( brittle bone disease). Walking briskly also promotes a healthy weight which also takes the pressure of our joints.

Walking keeps the mind sharp and improves sleep. There’s no reason not to catch that daily walk with all these great benefits.

Could walking be key to living a longer life? In my opinion, yes! It has numerous health and mental benefits. Mood boosting benefits can be critical for the older adult population as they tend to suffer loss, and feel isolated and alone. This can lead to depression. Walking gets those good feeling brain based chemicals (endorphins) released and flowing. What a powerful way to improve your mental health and well being!

When you go out and walk, you’re much more likely to connect with other people. There are also local walking clubs that you can join. This is a great option if you don’t have a walking partner(s) and would like one.

Staying social for seniors well being is crucial. I teach water aerobics and it’s generally an older population that attend. It’s more social than anything and that is so important for so many

who may live alone. It’s their time to be with others, catch up on current events, plan an outing or just gossip.

Are you ready to lace up, yet?

With all forms of exercise, I recommend you start slowly if you are new to working out. Don’t go too hard too fast. This is just like anything else and there’s always room for growth and improvement. Give yourself time.

Your pace and distance will increase, I promise. Make sure you can carry on a conversation while walking and are not completely out of breath.

The talk test is what I like to call it. I would also factor in the weather and

keep an eye on extreme temperatures. You don’t want to be walking mid day in July. First thing in the morning may be best during our summer months and possibly mid afternoon in the colder months while the sun is shining.

You’ll also want to invest in a good, comfortable walking shoe.

You can also get creative with your walks.

Challenge yourself with one extra lap around the block or play games which keeps the mind sharp such as counting all the yellow houses that you pass or oak trees. With a little thought, it can literally be anything. This will also keep your mind occupied while having fun a d before you know it, you’ll have walked miles without even realizing it!

Ocean City Block Party Goes Virtual

t’s October, and that means the Annual Ocean City Fall Block Party is right around the corner.

The event, which attracts more than 30,000 people to Downtown Ocean City, is changing for 2020.

Next weekend, shoppers can experience all of the great deals our local businesses have to offer. While you may not find a sea of tents or craft vendors along Asbury Avenue, merchants are still open and are preparing for a busy weekend.

From October 9th – 11th, between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm each day, the Fall Virtual Block Party will spotlight amazing offers from Ocean City businesses. Shoppers can expect to find everything from clothing and jewelry to art and books, just to name a few!

Aside from the online element, over 200 downtown and boardwalk merchants will be open in-person

for business, with sidewalk sales and pop-up tables throughout the city.

Even the local restaurants and attractions are ready to serve customers.

Michelle Gillian, Executive Director of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, highlights the importance of this weekend event for small retailers: “This is the last big weekend for all of the boardwalk businesses, where we welcome everyone to Ocean City and participate in all the attractions we have.”

Park Theatre Destroyed By Fire

ark Fire Loss Set at $75,000” was the headline on the September 12, 1930, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The article reported, “Less than 48 hours it had closed for the season, the Park

was done to the boardwalk, although the flames threatened to consume it several times as they crept along to the front wall of the structure. The nearest building to the Park was the Delaware Hotel 100 feet northwest from the rear of the Park, but the wind was from the northeast and the hostelry became a vantage point instead a place of danger.”

The Park Theatre Building, which opened in 1917, had much to offer visitors to America’s Greatest Family Resort. Besides the theatre, the building contained a large bath house, a candy shop, restaurant, delicatessen shop, soda fountain, and a novelty and fishing tackle store.

hope you sang that to the tune of the old Almond Joy and Mounds commercial, "Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut." The point is, sometimes it feels like we have it all together as moms.

Some days feel like we are winning at this parenting game and other days it feels like we have no clue which way is up.

For me, most days start off on the right foot and by early afternoon, I am lost in the mix. Around 1PM, I find myself trying to find some resemblance of productivity in our home to get us through the rest of the day.

It's in those moments of chaos that I am most reminded that these

kids don't need "perfect" right now.

They need sanity just like we do. Our kids feel the stresses of not being in school and the changes in their lifestyle as much as we do.

Going into this school year, I tried to wrap my head around the fact that all of our children will be in a similar boat going back to school. Some will struggle, others will excel, but all of them will be coming out of this weird time in their lives.

Of course, their reading, writing, and arithmetic will matter but I personally believe that their emotional and mental health will be of utmost importance as they head back into the world.

That said, I've tried my hardest to nurture the emotional well being of my two children, even if that means skimping on the math lesson some days.

As moms, our mental and emotional well being matters as well. And let's be honest, we lead the pack.

Our moods and emotions can sway the emotions of the entire house.

Spouses, kids, pets, and whoever else lives in your home feed off of

the emotions of "Mama Bear." Taking care of ourselves in the midst of those moments of chaos holds more value than we imagine. While it feels like just walking away might not be conducive to checking off the to-do list, it might be exactly what everyone needs that day.

I'm riding this new learning curve with the rest of you as we figure out virtual learning, hybrid schedules,

or homeschool depending on your unique situation. We are all in the same boat trying to navigate. In my experience, any time I've had to use the phrase, "learning curve" to describe my current reality, it has never been something easy!

What I have learned though, is that us moms are built for hard things.

We bend, shift, adjust, and adapt where necessary to rise above and continue to show up for our family.

Homeschool is no different. This wasn't what any of us planned, yet here we are. Through my experience over the last couple of months (I started homeschooling my kids August 1st), I have found that we all fizzle out in the afternoons.

So instead of fighting it, I have been adjusting to cater to it.

For example, I know through trial and error that there is no way on God's green earth that my 5th grader will complete a math assignment without a full tantrum after 3pm.

Therefore, I don't even try anymore.

A look back to an old ad, circa 1935

All math has to get done before noon and most days, we "eat the frog" and get the hardest task done first.

I know that after lunch, both of my children want to relax a bit so after many days of fighting back, I finally decided to adjust their schedule to cater to that. I also had to accept that my long list of "to-do"s was never going to be complete so rather than fighting, I shortened the list.

I am constantly working on creating a sense of calm within myself and my home. It's a huge struggle for me and I know many of my fellow moms can relate. I think for me, the biggest thing has been understanding that it isn't all going to get done. Not every day, at least. Being gentle with ourselves, with our children, and with the overall situation is what all of us need right now.

The world is full of so much stress and so many anxieties right now. We feel it all and so do our littles. I want to encourage you to eliminate as much of those stressors as possible.

Lighten the load as much as you can.

There will be a time when we are

all back to the grind outside of the home. When kids are back in school, sports, after school activities and we are busy in the office, networking, work dinners.

For now, let's take a collective deep breath and know that it is okay to not get it all done. It's okay to not check every box or cross off every list. It's okay to go a little easy on yourself and the people around you.

We are living through strange times.

Show yourselves some grace and love through the process. We will all be better for it.

Ps. Let's remember to treat everyone around us with kindness. When the world is trying to turn us against one another, I encourage you to lean in instead. Love will always trump hate.

A Few Favorite Books

Shore Reads

o you love to read? It is my favorite escape. I love cozying up with a good book. Today there are so many options. You may love to hold a hard copy in your hands, or enjoy e-reading right on your phone or tablet, or like me, you may prefer listening to audiobooks.

I was a voracious reader in my younger years. Later though, between parenting and working, I felt I never had enough time to sit down with a book. Enter audio books, truly a multitasker's dream!

Suddenly I could read and empty the dishwasher, fold laundry, or walk the dogs --all at the same time. I typically listen or "read" about 2 hours a day and it is often the best part of my day.

Here is a glimpse at some of my favorites. I recently finished reading "Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah and it was sensational. I highly recommend

it along with the other four novels spotlighted below.

“T

he scammers follow the headlines” states Ms. Monica Vaca. Ms. Vaca has built her career exposing scams of all kinds and helping people after they have been scammed.

Monica Vaca is Associate Director for the Division of Consumer Response and Operations at The Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

“What’s in the headlines right now is Covid 19. Scammers are following that lead as well.” Ms. Vaca warns. Since the early days of the pandemic Ms. Vaca has seen and fielded complaints about “treatments” , “cures, and “tests” that have all been fraudulent and separated people from their cash.

According to Vaca, the problems are not just with fake cures and treatments but with so many people in turmoil over Covid and isolation the scams have expanded to include shopping, making money, education, debt, travel, romance and more.

Ms. Vaca explains her department has fielded over one hundred and nine thousand complaints of fraud related to Corona Virus. “At a time when no one can afford to lose any money,” Ms. Vaca explains “We have data that shows people have lost over one hundred and forty six million dollars.”

The scams topping the list these days are online shopping frauds. People “buying” personal protection equipment (masks,

gloves, etc.) that never come. Also fake job opportunities like “mystery shopper” or “car wrap advertising.” Vaca also warns of “too great to be true” work from home opportunities. Ms. Vaca stated that many times they will even send fake “checks” so that it seems like it’s legit but the process will leave you with an empty bank account.

The sources may seem like an actual government office or school.

Please share this information with family and friends. Scammers are counting on the desperation and pain of the public at large during these times. Also keep in mind that any legitimate cures, treaments and tests will be on national and local news with information on how to follow up. If anyone is sending you a text with a weird (often mispelled link) or email regarding tests, stimulus money, PPE or other Covid related “help," it is likely to be a scam and should be vetted by The FTC. EHT woman starts a group to show support for local police officers

"W

hen I grew up, you respected police officers.

99% of police officers are good people. Just as in any other profession, sometimes people do the wrong thing," said Nyssa Beckman, Egg Harbor Township resident and founder of the Facebook group EHT BACK THE BLUE. "When I saw the video of our EHT police officers being harassed as they got out of their vehicles, in their own parking lot, it didn't sit well with me," said Beckman. " That's when I decided to do something to show my support and began organizing with other like-minded members of the community." That was September 22nd and in the less than two weeks the group has risen in number to over 700.

EHT BACK THE BLUE has delivered food and is collaborating with local restaurants to donate meals.

"The police department is very appreciative and it is fantastic to see

the community showing up for our officers," shared Beckman. Another plan is in the works that would involve creating a personal card for each officer. "There is great value in a handwritten note of appreciation," said Beckman. "We would love to see children be involved with this as well."

Beckman, of Egg Harbor Township, is mom to Stella, age 4 and is expecting her second child in February. She reports that her daughter

is very excited about the group and loves police officers along with first responders.

"I do not believe in defunding the police. Maybe they do need more training, but the community also needs more training….on how to interact with people respectfully, without being confrontational," said Beckman.

Meet the band - Rahway Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

D

ina: Today, we're talking with Tim Louie, who is the bass player of the awesome heavy metal band Rahway. Before we talk about your group Rahway, I'd like to know a little bit more about what inspired you to get into the music business.

Tim: Well, I got into the music business a long, long time ago. I started playing guitar in high school and then I went to my first concert, Motley Crue live at the Meadowlands Arena. And then I said, you know what, I could do that! And ever since then, it's been like a long journey in and out of bands. till finally landed in the right one, in a band called Rahway. It's made up of two brothers, the Cardenas brothers, Dave and Steve. They're the guitar player and the drummer. And we have a singer named Nick Fielding who is

also in the band. But I'm the most recent member of the band. And, you know, together we just make magic. I don't know what it is.

Dina: I read somewhere that you're a big fan of Nikki Sixx, and that's probably why you started playing the bass?

Tim: Yeah, he's the reason why I picked up the bass. I actually play his style of bass.

Dina: Was Steven Tyler of Aerosmith the one who gave Rahway its name? Can you tell me a little bit about how that came about?

Yeah, so, the band Rahway used to be called Sun many, many years ago, and the brothers were recording with a producer named Jack Douglas, who used to produce Aerosmith at the time. And he actually was talking about the band to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He played a couple of songs and Steven Tyler really liked the songs. He goes, Who's this band?

And Jack Douglas says, “these guys are called Sun” and he goes, “That’s a terrible name! Where are they from?”

And Jack Douglas said, Oh, they're from Rahway, New Jersey. He goes, “Why don’t they just call the band Rahway?” Ever since then, the name stuck.

Dina: What about the second half of the name, The Slumlords of New Jersey. Where did that come from?

Tim: That's a funny story, I'm not sure if you're familiar with Juliet Huddy. She used to be on Fox in New York. She was a reporter up there.

And one day she interviewed the band, and it was one of those emailed questions that we had to answer. And for some reason I called us the slumlords of New Jersey as a description of the band. And it all of a sudden,

we started using it as a hashtag. And our producer that produced our new CD, Slumlords of New Jersey, said to us, that's a really bad ass name.

And I said, why don't we just call the CD Slumlords of New Jersey? And everyone was like, yeah, that's a good idea. So we stuck with it.

Dina: Speaking of nicknames, while doing some research about Rahway, I learned your nickname was Chigger, How did that come about?

Tim: I've had that since I was a kid.

You know, we all we always knew that I was the annoying one in my group of friends. And then, what's more annoying than being bitten by a Chigger? It was either that they're going to call me or tick or they were going to call me Chigger. So, they stuck with Chigger.

Dina: Is there a certain artist or band that’s influenced your journey as a musician?

Tim: Yeah, it's definitely Motley Crue. The entire band is influenced.

You know, everything that I've done, they've influenced my attitude in life and they've got me through some tough times as a teenager. I mean, there's also bands like Pantera who, you know, I became friends with the entire band. Actually, Rex Brown is a good friend of mine. There's also the guys on Skid Row, fellow New Jersey guys, Guns and Roses, of course, Metallica, like a lot of those hard rock bands or what I grew up listening to, but Motley Crue is still my be all and end all, my ride or die idol for sure.

Dina: So Rahway just released a new 11 song CD titled Undefeated and a five song EP entitled, Slumlords of New Jersey. Can you tell me a little bit about these new releases and where your fans can purchase them?

Tim: Well, Undefeated is about I think that I think that would be two

years old now. Slumlords of New Jersey just came out last week. So that's the five song EP. Two of those songs were written by my guitar player and I while we were doing our side project and before I joined Rahway, that's how old the two of those songs are. But they rock and we actually have a cover on there also from Paul McCartney and Wings, called “Jet�.

So yeah, we rocked it out. Undefeated is actually a really good CD, too. [laughing] Is there 11 songs on it? I don’t even remember!

Dina: Can purchase them on your website?

Tim: Yeah. Rahwayband.com.

They're all for sale on there. iTunes have it, CD Baby has it. But the one that we're really trying to push right now is Slumlords of New Jersey because I just love that CD and it's got attitude. I mean I'm not sure if you heard the song “Sugar� yet, but that has about twenty-five thousand views already, which we're ecstatic about.

Dina: Who writes the music for the band or is it like more of a joint effort?

Tim: Oh yeah, it's a collaboration.

I mean a lot of times our drummer, Steve is one of the brothers, he can come in with an idea and he tells me

↘Continued from 37 what notes to play and we'll work on it. And then before you know, when we leave the rehearsal studio, we have a new song. There are also times where my lead guitar player, Dave and I, would come in with a really heavy guitar riff and then work on that, and all of a sudden, we have a song. So, it's a collaboration. And Nick adds that that modern vocal styling to it.

Dina: So, there's one person in your band who is a Bigfoot fan?

Tim: [Laughing] Haha, yeah. How do you find this stuff?

Dina: [Laughing] I don’t know!

Tim: Yeah, my guitar player, Dave he kind of looks like Bigfoot. So, we make fun of him a lot. But he yeah, he loves Bigfoot. And sometimes you watch some of the Rahway videos, you go back and look at some of the old ones. You'll see an excerpt where there's Bigfoot is involved somehow, like you'll see his face flash on the screen.

Dina: Rahway has enjoyed huge success and has even had the opportunity to play with hugely successful bands like Skid Row. How did you get that opportunity and what was that experience like?

Tim: Well, I mean, I also am a writer. I write for a music newspaper up in North Jersey called The Aquarian Weekly, but I also worked for a con-

cert promoter for five years.

So that helped get my foot in the door with the entertainment industry. And I was able to lock in a lot of shows and tours with some of these bigger bands. We played a couple of festivals. A festival called the Rock Carnival up in Clark, New Jersey. Which had like everyone and their mother were there like Slash and Skid Row and Godsmack, and we got to open for these guys. And then we also got invited to play the Rock’n Derby Festival up in Schaghticoke, New York. I don't even know where that is, but upstate New York. So, we got to open Bassist, Tim Louie of Rahway for Anthrax and we got to meet Nikki Sixx because we opened Dina: So what is the largest audifor Sixx:A.M. It was just an amazing, ence you've ever performed in front amazing festival. We got to break our of?

Tim: I'd say about three thousand teeth on some of those big stages. in Rahway ballroom.

Dina: Wow. That must have been incredible for you to meet Nikki Dina: What is what is the ultiSixx. Was that the first time meetmate goal for the band? It is weird, the less you care about making this a career, the more that happens.

Dina: Yeah, that’s actually true.

So, you don't care so much necessarily for making the big time or whatever. You're just doing it. You love to do it. And if it happens, it happens.

Tim: Exactly. I mean if someone

offers me a tour and a record contract tomorrow, I'll take it.

Dina: Yeah, of course.

You probably have a lot of contacts in the business to where that's probably a reality?

Tim: Yeah, I mean, it's weird. Obviously, you know, I worked the Hard Rock and now at Ocean in Atlantic City and, you know, it's just like I'm running into the same people in the entertainment industry at every show that we put on.

I'm running into the same people, people that I run into when I'm actually performing myself. And, yeah, you know, it could be a reality one day.

Dina: Tim, thank you so much for your time and allowing us to get to know Rahway a little better.

T

he Lincoln cent, first struck in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincolns’ birth was made of 95% copper and a 5% combination of tin and zinc, a combination first utilized in 1865. In 1942, with war raging around the globe, it was decided to divert the copper used to mint cents to the war effort and replace the metal with steel. This change took place with the 1943 dated cents struck at all 3 mints, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco, using zinc plated steel blanks resulting in a combined mintage of over a billion coins.

In 1944 the use of copper to mint cents resumed, utilizing the copper from artillery shell casing recovered from battlefields.

I’ve written before about what could have been an innocent effort by a mint employee resulted in the creation of a very valuable variety, a copper 1943 cent. How this 1943 copper cent came into existence is purely speculation, but is assumed a few copper blanks were left over from 1942 and were fed into the presses when production resumed in 1943. Copper 1943 cents have been found minted at both the Philadelphia Mint (12 known) and the San Francisco Mint (I owned one years ago). To date no 1943 copper cents minted at the Denver Mint have been found. Prices realized in auction for these copper 1943 cents have gone as high as $1.7 million (mine was worth only a fraction of that).

Needless to say prices like that can encourage counterfeiting, the easiest is to copper plate a steel cent. Another is to take a 1948 dated cent and shave off the left side of the 8 to make it look like a 3, but the result wouldn’t fool many people. Uncovering a copper coated steel cent is easy and doesn’t have to involve scratching the surface with a sharp object to show the steel underneath (mine was unfortunately scratched). Using a magnet with result in the copper coated 1943 cent sticking to the magnet, hence revealing it as a fake.

Now for the new variety of a 1943 cent. A recent article I read written by a collector, covered his life beginning with his father encouraging him to pick up loose change as he found it on the ground, which became the start of his collection.

One day he found what he thought was a steel 1943 cent under his front porch which he placed in his Whitman folder in the hole for the 1943 cent.

Recently, for whatever reason, he decided to take a magnet to his 1943 steel cents which he obviously would expect them all to be attracted to the magnet.

But the coin he found under his porch wasn’t attracted to the magnet. Perplexed, he contacted some numismatists who advised he send the coin to NGC for authentication. NGC just assumed it was a regular steel cent and returned it in a holder labeled “Details -Damaged” steel cent, which didn’t satisfy his curiosity.

At the urging of another numismatist, he sent the coin to a metallurgical XRF scan, which revealed the coins composition to be 85.5% tin, 8.5% antimony and 5.5% copper. With this information in hand, the coin was resubmitted to NGC which did their own XRF scan that verified the metal content and placed the coin in a new holder detailing the new results.

How this coin came into existence is unknown. The Philadelphia mint has always struck coins for foreign governments and sometimes their blanks get mixed in with the blanks used for our coins, but no foreign government coins had that metal combination. Possibly it was a test piece that inadvertently was released to circulation, and the question is, are there others out there?

The coin sold in auction for $5,040, not an impressive amount for what could be a unique coin. But enough to encourage collectors to take a magnet to their 1943 steel cents. If the coin doesn’t stick, they may have one of the newly found varieties.
