The Cape-Atlantic Conference of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association has OFFICIALLY ENDORSED Joseph “TOKYO” O’Donoghue as their choice to be elected Atlantic County Sheriff this November. The Cape-Atlantic Conference represents all of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) locals in Atlantic and Cape May counties. The officers on the streets have expressed their confidence in his ability to lead Atlantic County amidst all of the current events and tumultuous climate. This is truly an amazing endorsement that shows that Joe “Tokyo” O’Donoghue has the overwhelming support of the men and women in law enforcement throughout the region who directly and indirectly work with the Sheriff department. Law enforcement has been my life’s work. It is with great honor and pride that I received this endorsement. There is no greater acknowledgment than that which is given to you by your peers. To my brothers and sisters in law-enforcement, and to the public at large, I promise you my total commitment to the Oath of my office. Thanks and God bless you…Joe Paid for by Joe for Sheriff 2020

Fall Vibes From the Editor

A

utumn is in the air. From mums to pumpkin spice lattes, the signs of the changing season are everywhere. One of my favorite things about living in this part of the country is the seasonal changes. Fall seems to have a special coziness to it. Maybe it's the crispness in the air every evening or the reintroduction of my favorite hoodies. I love the aesthetic look and smell of Autumn. Knowing that the holidays are right around the corner also adds to my excitement. Some of our favorite fall activities are going to be a bit different this year. With COVID-19 precautions still in place, it has already been announced that many area fall festivals

are either canceled or going virtual. Football fans will be watching from their home screens. Still many of the simplest and greatest pleasures of the season are not affected, like the aroma of a pumpkin spice candle, a pot of chilli or a favorite cozy blanket. The political dial is being turned up with more signs popping up on folks' lawns and at every intersection. The intensity of some political opinions can be stressful. I believe we can disagree on anything, including politics and candidates and still like and respect one another. Yet in the media, especially the social media, we often only see only the extremes. There will also be a referendum vote on election day. Read Bill Barrow's feature on page 22 about the upcoming vote on the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state. In this issue of Shore Local, we are so excited to welcome Meteorologist Dan Skeldon to our team of top col-

Speaking of hurricanes, the ocean is a different beast this time of year with larger swells and frequent rip currents. The Atlantic City Beach Patrol reported over 1,000 ocean rescues so far this season. The weather has been gorgeous with sunny days and warm water temperatures that are inviting. But please heed the advice of area Beach Patrols and only swim at guarded beaches. Get comfortable with a warm cup of coffee or tea and enjoy this issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine. Give yourself a break from the pandemic ●

By Erica Hoffman

I

f you’re anything like me, this insane time has stressed you out at least a little and you could use a break. You may find yourself wondering how to hit pause on this perpetual doom and gloom machine we’re on. I have lived with anxiety and constant worry all of my life. As a result, I am on a perpetual hunt for relaxation tips and tricks. In an effort to unclench our collective jaws, I'd like to pass on what I've learned through my lifetime of (mostly) self-inflicted anxiety. Whether it be physically, mentally, or emotionally, there certainly are ways to get your zen back. Let me help! Ways to give yourself a break: ● Take a break from alcohol, processed food, and sugar - To be honest, it sucks at first. However the cravings subside, and then you

will feel great. Take a long, hot bath - Use Epsom salts to relax your muscles (pro tip from someone who lives on the brink of “stressed out”). Allow time for a little extra sleep - Whether it's going to bed 20 minutes early or doing some prep the night before to give yourself some time to sleep in, a couple of minutes of extra z’s go a long way. Do a YouTube or On Demand yoga class- You can do this alone, or make it a family event. Everyone can take a turn choosing which style of yoga to do. It's surprisingly more fun than you think. Be still in silence- Find a favorite spot, and just be. Quiet your mind, and do nothing for ten minutes. Being still is surprisingly hard at first, but I can tell you it's worth it. Use deep breathing techniques - There are (of course) apps that can help you. Try the app “Calm,” or the cleverly titled “The Breathing App.” Clean up your computer - Close the tabs and windows you’re not using. Focus on single-tasking. Embarrassingly, I did this and had 81 tabs and windows open that I wasn’t using. I can’t believe I'm

broadcasting my shame. Go for a walk Don’t set a time or route, just wander. This may seem trite, but honestly, it can lead to some amazing clarity. Play like a child - Blow bubbles, make a sandcastle, take a bike ride, or play with some playdough or slime. Trust me. Take a break from the news Don’t worry, you won’t miss anything. There’s even a chance you may feel less bogged down at the end of a news-free day. Trying it is the only way to know for sure.

● Take

a social media break - Again, I can assure you, you won’t be missing anything. There will be plenty of unrealistic pictures of “deliriously happy” people you went to high school with when you return. Erica Hoffman was born in Atlantic City and is proud to be writing for Shore Local. She lives in South Jersey and enjoys finding and sharing the lighter side of life.

Hurricanes Keep Churning in Record Season

By Dan Skeldon

S

trap yourselves in...it's going to be a long hurricane season. It's already on track to be one of the most active on record, and we're just passed the peak of the

six-month long season. But do we expect anything less in the tumultuous year that has been 2020? It's a year that we could very well run out of names on our annual list of storm names for the Atlantic Basin. After all, we're already up to the "T" storm, which this year is Teddy, and it's only the middle of September, with over two months left to go

before the end of the season. The list has only 21 names, one for each letter of the alphabet with the exception of Q, U, X, Y, and Z. And with a prediction for as many as 25 named storms by long range hurricane forecasters, don't be surprised to see Hurricane Alpha, Beta, or Epsilon on the weather On Monday September 14, for only the second time in recorded history, there were map before the end of five active tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean at the same time. Credit NOAA the year. That's because if we exhaust this year's list, we turn to the Greek Alphabet. If this is "all Greek to you", allow me to explain why it has been such a busy season. And yes, there is a better reason than simply "because it's 2020." It's really a combination of factors, a perfect storm of conditions if you pardon the cliche, that could lead to one of the busiest seasons on record. First, the water temperatures across the Atlantic from the United States to the west African coast are warmer than average. And remember, warm water is the fuel that tropical systems need to form. Cold or warm, the water temperature off of South Jersey has no impact on our hurricane threat each year, as it's the warmer ocean water in the tropical breeding grounds farther south that dictate a season's potential. Next, a wetter monsoon season across Africa has recently led to more tropical waves emerging into the Atlantic and developing into long-tracked storms. We call those "Cape Verde" storms as they start near the Cape Verde islands off Africa, and Hurricanes Irene (2011) and Gloria (1985) were such storms, to name a few. Finally, a La Nina has officially developed, leading to lighter trade winds and lighter wind shear. Strong shear tends to disrupt tropical systems and tears apart its circulation, and stronger storms can form with lighter than normal shear. Hurricane Laura, which hit Louisiana as a devastating Category 4 storm in late August, is an example of a storm that exploded in a light shear environment. It's a hurricane season that, although just past the halfway point, has already scarred the South Jersey landscape. In early August, Tropical Storm Isaias brought 70 mile-perhour wind gusts throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties. And let's not forget to mention Isaias leading to a rare South Jersey tornado touchdown from Strathmere to Marmora, an EF1 twister packing 100 mile-per-hour winds along it's 5.25 mile path. Anoth-

↘Continued from 6 er tornado and waterspout touched down over Long Beach Island in Ocean County. And all that was from "only" a tropical storm. Storms in the heart of the hurricane season, which runs through mid-October, have the chance to be much stronger and longer-lived, hence the greater concern in late summer and early fall. Now it's worth noting that while hurricane forecasts have made impressive strides in accurately forecasting how busy or quiet a season will be, there's still no way of forecasting where the storms will go once they form. And where is of course the more important question to answer than how many. If there's 10 additional storms this year and none hit land, will it be remembered as a busy end to the season? I've always said it only takes one storm to define a season, one major hurricane making landfall in a populated coastal area. Hopefully, Isaias is the worst storm that 2020 has to offer for the East Coast. But could the worst be yet to come. And for where? In the continental United States, Atlantic hurricanes can strike anywhere from the Texas Gulf Coast to DownEast Maine. And although we can see a storm coming for days and therefore give plenty of warning before it strikes, we still have to wait for these tropical systems to spin up and forecast them one at a time when they do. Meteorology is still after all an inexact science. The Atlantic hurricane season runs each year from June 1 to November 30, peaking the second week of September. For South Jersey, the most

likely time for impacts from storms or remnants coming up the East Coast runs from late August through early October. But Hurricane Sandy striking in late October of 2012 reminded us

the threat extends the length of the hurricane season. And don't forget, once hurricane season ends, it's time for the more informal Nor'easter season. There's no official dates or storm names for that one, but it is a reminder of the year round threat for storms that comes with living and vacationing along the South Jersey shoreline. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Fall surfing is entirely different

A cool breeze cut across the waves, chopping things up, and making a little neoprene seem like one of humanity’s great inventions, but there was some size and some power to the waves. Now, I’m all for little summer waves. I don’t disdain playing in fun, warm water if there’s enough swell to cruise along on a longboard, but I know some of the hard-core surfers won’t even consider getting the board out for waves of a foot or less. The Parkway and Expressway: Past, Present and Future

By Steffen Klenk

ome changes are coming to the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic Expressway. New construction is heading for these New Jersey roads, hopefully easing traffic congestion in the future. To finance these improvements, tolls for both the Parkway and Expressway are going up. While this is inconvenient, these roadway improvements will make it easier than ever to commute to the South Jersey shore. A quick look at history reveals how vital the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic Expressway are. During the 19th century, passenger trains were an essential mode of transportation. Construction began on South Jersey’s first rail line in 1852, a service that would carry passengers between Camden and Atlantic City. On July 4, 1854, the Camden and Atlantic Railroad was in full operation.

Here’s an interesting fact: the term “shoobie” derives from daytrippers who took the train and were given a shoebox that included a packed lunch included with their rail ticket. It later referred to anyone who brought a picnic lunch to the beach. Train service remained popular until the mid-1900s when automobiles became widely used. Interstates were picking up steam, as families would travel Photo by Steffen Klenk long distances to vacation and to help drive more visitors to the see relatives. extra lane of traffic between the Exit 36 interchange (Egg Harbor Township) and Exit 30 (Somers Point/Ocean City). Improvements are also set to be made to several entrance and exit ramps. The NJ Transportation Authority plans to convert Exit 29 into a full interchange, allowing cars to enter and exit the Parkway from the south end of Somers Point. While specific plans are still being laid out, there are no details on what will happen to Exit 30. To keep up with the ever-growing demand for technology and new construction projects, both the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway tolls have recently increased. As of September 13th, travelers along the Parkway will notice a 27% increase in tolls, up from $1.75 to $1.90, while ACX drivers can expect to pay 37% more on their commute. Ocean City Founder and Inventor Reverend Lake to the Rescue A Look Back By Fred Miller

O

ne hundred and twenty years ago, August 7, 1900, Rev. Ezra B. Lake died after a short illness at the age of 66. He was one of Ocean City’s founders, and was remembered by mourners as a minister, organizer, civic leader, developer, and inventor. Today the spotlight is on Ezra B. Lake the inventor. Necessity is the mother of invention and 136 years ago Rev. Lake saw the need for a lifesaving vehicle to rescue shipwreck victims and endangered bathers. The men of the U. S. Life Saving Service were responsible for ocean rescues. Their lifesaving equipment was limited to lifeboats On December 18, 1884, Rev. Ezra B. Lake took his Sea Wagon for a test drive off the Fourth Street beach.

and breeches buoys. Rev. Lake designed and built a vehicle he called a Sea Wagon. He believed it would replace the lifeboat and on December 18, 1884, he was ready to demonstrate his machine. This was a well-publicized event which drew hundreds of people to the Fourth Street beach to watch the initial test drive. Watching with great interest were the island’s top U. S. Life Saving Service officials including Captain James S. Willets, Captain Leaming Godfrey, and Captain Charles D. Stephens. It was a strange looking contraption: a pyramid made of iron rods

with the peak cut off and a platform placed on the top. The structure was attached to big wheels, propelled by a steam engine, and steered by a crank on the platform. An American flag flew from the top railing. The demonstration went well and after the Sea Wagon was back on the beach Rev. Lake addressed the assembled crowd saying, “By this test all weaknesses and defects were made manifest, which are being promptly remedied. The wagon wheels will not bury in the sand, as some feared. It can be run out to a wreck when a boat cannot be launched, the higher the sea the more quickly it will work its

way out. It can be controlled by steering gears, and can be run backwards or forwards by simply changing the gearing by the man on the top. At a wreck, ladders may be run down, not up, to the vessel’s deck, long enough to allow for the heavy seas, the Sea Wagon remaining perfectly at rest as the sea sweeps through its skeleton form.” The Sea Wagon was never embraced by the U. S. Life Saving Service and it faded into history—until now. It was back on the Ocean City beach this summer not as a tool for ocean rescue, but as a tool for beach replenishment.

Lidl grocery store announces new EHT Location

By Steffen Klenk

S

outh Jersey is about to have a new option for grocery shopping. Late last month, the discount grocery chain Lidl announced plans to open 50 new stores across the U.S. by the end of next year. One of the new locations will include the former location of JR’s Fresh Market on Fire Road in Egg Harbor Township. The company is planning to open nine additional stores across the state of New Jersey. In a statement, Lidl says it will invest over $500 million in its new locations and create more than 2,000 jobs with leading wages and benefit packages that will include healthcare insurance for all employees. One thing shoppers will notice is a difference in the prices. The company says its expansion will bring savings to local customers. A recent study by

SEPTEMBER 17, 2020

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School showed L i d l ’s prices to be 18.5% lower than Target and 10% lower than BJ’s. According to the National Retail Federation, Lidl was recently ranked the #1 retailer in the United States and named one of the f a s te s t- g row i n g companies in the Hot 100 Retailers list. In ad di t ion , most of the items you’ll find at Lidl are organic and locally sourced in the United States, and roughly 90% of their products in-store are private-label, meaning there are certain products you won’t find at other grocery stores. And that can lead to big savings. The first Lidl opened in 1973 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, just south of Frankfurt. The original store only

had three employees and only 500 products, which became the foundation for their far-reaching expansion. During the 1980s, Lidl became a household name throughout Germany, with over 300 locations employing seven people at each store and stocking 900 product lines. By the late 1990s, they began opening stores outside of Germany and across Europe.

Three years ago, Lidl opened its first U.S. location in Virginia Beach. Currently, the grocery chain operates just over 10,000 stores in over 30 countries, including 112 locations on the east coast of the United States from New York to Georgia. According to Lidl, the grand opening date for the new Egg Harbor Township location will be announced in the coming months. With the recent closure of SaveA-Lot along the Black Horse Pike and the opening of new stores like Walmart along Fire Road, the addition of Lidl will be a welcome sight for shoppers throughout South Jersey. Gardening Through the Fall By Tammy Thornton

W

ell, the kids are “back” to school either virtually or physically, and evenings are cooling off. But gardening season is anything but over. While quarantined, many people took up gardening as a new hobby and are ready to call it a wrap for the year. However, fall weather provides the perfect conditions for starting cool season crops, moving misplaced perennials, and planting bulbs that will bloom in the spring. After the dog days of summer, your plants can look a bit beat up by the harsh temperatures of July and August. But as autumn approaches and the sun relents, our plants breathe a sigh of relief. Some have already succumbed to the heat and have decided to sleep underground until spring. But others relish the cooler temperatures and throw an end-of-the-year party. You may see a new wave of blooms on forgotten plants. It’s not the riotous explosion of blooms like in spring, but a subtle

peaceful beauty. This is an excellent time to plant perennials, divide those that are overgrown, or shift misplaced plants in the garden. My gardening friend, Esther, and I have joked that our plants are on wheels. Gardens are always in flux, and as plants mature and conditions change, you may find that some of your plants need to be shifted in the garden. It’s very gratifying to move out-of-place perennials around to a new location that looks just right. But moving plants

easy to grow in containers if you lack space. How fun to grow your own salad in one pot! One of my favorite fall gardening tasks is planting spring-blooming bulbs. For me, leafing through gardening catalogs of flower bulbs is like taking a kid to a candy store; it’s hard to limit myself. The choices are endless: fringed tulips, parrot tulips, single tulips, and triumph tulips. Then there are grape hyacinths, alliums, daffodils, anemones, and bluebells. Every spring, when I see those beau-

tiful flowers blooming, I wish I planted even more in the fall. Choose healthy bulbs from reputable sources. Bulbs should be full and firm like a healthy head of garlic. Speaking of which, if you want to harvest garlic next year, this is the time to plant those as well. Planting bulbs is a lesson in patience, endurance, and hope. We plant a tear-shaped bulb deep into the ground, and wade through the cold, dark season of winter. But in the spring, our long wait is rewarded with a beauty only possible because of the

hardships of winter. Shore Local would love to hear about your fall gardening experiences. Please send your pictures, questions, and comments to shorelocalgardener@gmail.com. Chicken Marengo – A Taste of the Piedmont

By Chef Joseph Massaglia

I

was born and raised in Brozolo, Italy, a commune – or what we in America would call a township – in the capital city of Turin in the Piedmont region. One of 20 regions in Italy, Piedmont is the second largest region in Italy (behind Sicily), is in Italy's northwest, and borders Switzerland and France. True to the meaning of its name (foot of the mountain), Piedmont is a land of mountains. It is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, with the highest peaks and largest glaciers in Italy. Every region of Italy is defined by its climate, geography and distance to (or from) the sea. Because of its location in the north of Italy and the abundance of mountains and valleys, the cuisine of the

Piedmont region is vastly different that the middle and southern regions of the country. The climate and rocky relief makes Piedmont a world-class wine destination – famous wines like Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d'Asti and Cortese di Gavi are all grown in the foothills around Turin – as well as home to some of the greatest truffles available in the world. Rice paddies filled with Arborio and Carnaroli rice abound in the Piedmont, and this region is responsible for the growth of almost half of Italy's risotto rice. Nutella, which is actually called gianduia (or gianduja), was invented in Turin around the turn of the nineteenth century. According to various websites, in 1806, Napoleon imposed a ban on British goods entering French-occupied harbours, putting a strain on cocoa supplies. One smart chocolatier – Michele Prochet – managed to stretch his chocolate supplies by mixing it with hazelnut paste – and thus, gianduia was born and the rest is history. And speaking of Napoleon, although our most famous Piedmont recipes rely on beef and red wine (Brasata al Barolo), many, many variations of risotto and

several varieties of gnocchi with cheese sauce (Gnocchi Alla Bava), Napoleon – actually his chef – is credited with inventing Chicken Marengo. (By the way, Gnocchi Alla Bava is one of my most favorite dishes and it’s been on my menu at Mama Mia’s for over 30 years.) According to Wikipedia, there is a popular myth that the dish was first made after Napoleon defeated the Austrian army at the Battle of Marengo at Marengo, (south of Alessandria, Italy), when his chef Dunand foraged in the town for ingredients because the supply wagons were too distant, and he created the dish from what he could find. According to this legend, Napoleon enjoyed the dish so much he had it served to him after every battle, and when Dunand was later better-supplied and substituted mushrooms for crayfish and added wine to the recipe, Napoleon refused to accept it, believing that a change would bring him bad luck. This colorful story, however, is probably myth because there would have been no access to tomatoes at that time, and the first published recipe for the dish omits them. The more realistic explanation for the origin of the dish is that it was created by a restaurant chef to honor Napoleon's victory. Since none of us were there at that time, we’ll never know! But I can tell you that Chicken Marengo, one of over 600 recipes on my website www.joestablefortwo is delicious. The old, original recipe on my site is true to tradition, very simple and garnished with bread, eggs and shrimp instead of crayfish. However, there are many, many variations when you search for the recipe on the internet. Some recipes substitute chicken breasts for a whole chicken, which I don’t think would give the dish a rich flavor. If you don’t want to cut up a chicken, I suggest substituting bone-

in chicken thighs for the whole chicken pieces. Other recipes include mushrooms, red bell peppers, onions and thyme. I’m not one to add bell peppers, but I do like the flavorful addition of mushrooms (which is said to be in the very first recipe), onions and thyme. I’ve included the traditional Chicken Marengo recipe from my website with this article. It comes from a well-known Italian Cookbook by Ada Boni called Italian Regional Cooking. It’s out of print now, but you may be able to find a used copy online. And if you’d like to enhance this recipe with some of the ingredients mentioned above, check out Pierre Franey’s Chicken Marengo recipe on the New York Times recipe website. I have many traditional Italian regional recipes on my menu at Mama Mia’s in Marmora. The entire town will be decorated with classic fall fest themed décor, focusing on the local businesses. On the day, there will be strolling acoustic musicians, characters for kids, photo opportunities, entertainers, and virtual contests. The Congo Falls Adventure Golf will be open all weekend for family fun so make sure you bring your competitive side as things may heat up!

Local Margate businesses will be hosting sidewalk sales where you can indulge in some holiday shopping. Following the Governor’s new Executive Order which allows indoor seating at 25% capacity, restaurants will offer both indoor and outdoor dining allowing you to treat yourself to Margate’s food scene. Some of the popular restaurants in Margate include Two Cents Plain (9305 Ventnor Ave), the ice cream parlor famous for their waffles and huge sundaes, Maynard’s Café (9306 Amherst Ave) who have a beautiful Starlite Garden serving up cocktails and tasty bar food, and Ventura’s Greenhouse Grill Ocean View (106 S Benson Ave) with delicious, fresh seafood. A great activity for kids and adults alike is the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Channel your inner Picasso and create a pumpkin masterpiece that could be in with the chance of winning one of three prizes. All you have to do is take a picture of your imaginative creation and submit it by September 26, and the top three winners will be announced on the day. Email photos of your creations to this address: info@margatehasmore.com Additionally, the organizers want to see full effort from all local businesses and will be holding a business decorating contest. Visitors can then take a photo-

graph outside of their favorite decorated business and send it to the email address above for a chance of winning a prize. For pet owners, The Pet Salon will be operating “Pics With Pets” where professional photographer Tom Briglia will be on hand to take your holiday pictures of you and your four-legged friend. You can get your pictures taken from 11 am-3 pm at The Pet Salon (Essex Ave). Fees do apply and a portion of the profits will be donated to the MBA. Find your favorite store in Margate and make a purchase because you could end up winning something from that store in the “Receipts are all the Rage” competition. All you need to do is take a picture of the receipt and send it to this email address: info@margatehasmore. com. Three winners will be selected at random to receive a gift certificate from that store. Finally, The Great Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt will have you running around Margate frantically searching for the plastic pumpkins the organizers will plant outside various businesses. Once you find a plastic pumpkin, make sure you open it up to reveal the prize tag which can then be brought into the businesses to be exchanged for a prize! Make sure you look thoroughly, as I have a feeling the organizers are not going to make it easy!

Margate Business Association has put their heart and soul into this event to make sure annual festival-goers are not missing out this year. They have considered all possible attendees and create a schedule of events that allows everyone to enjoy the festival, regardless of if you are choosing to self-isolate or are able to get outside. MBA president, Ed Berger, said “We are taking the Fun from Funfest and spreading it all over town. We want everyone to welcome in the Fall safely and with a smile, even if we can’t see it behind your masks.” The end of summer may be disappointing for some, but that means it is the Fall-lovers’ time to shine. Fall Funfest is the perfect way to start the season, wear your coziest fall sweater, and support all the fantastic small businesses in Margate. More Than Mums in the Autumn Garden

By Tammy Thornton

N

othing says fall like pumpkins, hayrides, and mums (chrysanthemums). Once I reluctantly accept that summer is over, I love and embrace the rich colors of fall. Orange pumpkins coupled with burgundy and yellow mums revive the tired summer garden and lead the way to a new season. Though mums are essential flowers in the fall garden, they are just one of the many fall-blooming perennials you can choose from this time of year. When buying mums, choose those that include unopened buds and deadhead any spent flowers to encourage new blooms and keep them looking good as long as possible. Just like any potted plant, keep your mums well-watered as they will dry out faster than those planted in the ground. Many times I see mums kicked to the curb after they have finished blooming, and I wonder if people realize that mums are perennials that can be planted in your garden to bloom year after year. Generally, if you find mums for sale at an outdoor nursery, those will be hardy mums, as opposed to the pampered ones growing inside. The quicker you get them into the ground, the better chance you have of success, as you will give the roots time to grow before winter frosts. Once your mums are established, you will want to prune them twice during the following season to give

them that nice rounded shape and to encourage blooms. But mums are just the start to your fall garden. Instead of wondering if he “loves you” or “loves you not”, just forget him and plant Montauk daisies (also called Nippon daisies). NJ could approve legal weed this fall

By Bill Barlow

N

ew Jersey seems poised to join Colorado, California, Massachusetts, and multiple other states in allowing adults to buy, possess and use marijuana without the added paranoia of breaking local laws. If approved, as many observers expect, the ballot question would clear the way for anyone over 21 to buy taxed and regulated marijuana from state-licensed locations. For now, only those with a doctor’s recommendation can legally buy marijuana in New Jersey. The question would amend the state constitution. “That’s the only way it works in New Jersey when you do questions like this,” said Scott Rudder, the president of the New Jersey CannaBusiness Association, one of several groups pushing for a “yes” vote. He argues that creating a new cannabis industry in the state will

bring in about $300 million in new taxes each year. “That’s a pretty conservative number,” he said. It will also mean new jobs and save about $150 million spent each year on enforcing the existing laws, according to Rudder. “It’s going to be significant. It’s going to be a nice boost to the economy.” Other pro-legalization groups cite civil liberties and issues of fairness, pointing to a disproportionate amount of arrests and convictions for marijuana possession among Black New Jersey residents compared to Whites, despite roughly equal reported use. “For the vast majority of people who consume marijuana today, the greatest harms associated with their consumption are not health-related,” reads a statement posted by New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform, an umbrella group of organizations favoring legalization. “They are the criminal and civil penalties that can prohibit them from gaining employment, housing or an education in the future.” Those in opposition paint a far more dire picture of legalization, warning of increased use by young people, more intoxicated driving and marijuana that is far stronger than what the Woodstock generation remembers smoking decades ago.

In addition to the dried flowers of the plant itself, the newly legal pot shops will be able to offer other products as well. “We’re talking about candies and vaping oil. It’s not just the joint. It’s not just the bong anymore,” said Gregg Edwards, the executive director of “Don’t Let NJ Go To Pot,” an advocacy group formed this year that is calling for residents to vote no. So far, the campaign has been relatively quiet, aside from some banner planes hired in support of a yes vote spotted over shore towns recently. Legalization advocates have been holding off until after Labor Day, when New Jersey starts to focus more on the election. Edwards says his group does not have the resources to blanket the state, but plans to target the message where he believes it will have the biggest impact. “Everything we do in terms of paid

advertising will be dictated by how much we are able to raise,” Edwards said. That likely rules out a massive ad campaign. “We’d like to, but we can’t. We just don’t have the financial wherewithal.” The organization is the successor to NJ Responsible Approaches to Marijuana Policy, an affiliate of the national Smart Approaches to Marijuana, which opposes commercial sales of marijuana. That organization had lobbied against legalization in the legislature, but Edwards said it is no longer in existence, with some of the organizers now involved with “Don’t Let NJ Go To Pot.” “Those of us who were opposed to legalizing recreational pot believed we needed an organization to fight this,” Edwards said. NJ RAMP still has a website, but its social media presence has been shut down and the posted contact number goes straight to voicemail and to a full mailbox. With the support of Gov. Phil Murphy and other Democratic leaders, a push to legalize through legislative action narrowly fell short last year, convincing supporters to turn to the voters for the 2020 election. Like other political campaigns in 2020, the pandemic is having an impact on both sides of the debate, limiting op-

tions to reach voters. With most votes now set to be by mail, Edwards said, the campaign is in uncharted waters. “The whole landscape has changed as a result of the mail-in ballot stuff,” he said. Usually, advocates save their push for ballot questions until just before the election, he said, but this year, it will be difficult to know when people will vote. Rudder, too, said Covid has changed the process, but he expects a vigorous campaign. “We’re going out there pretty aggressively,” he said. “People want to see change happen. People recognize that cannabis prohibition has failed. We expect it to pass.” The numbers appear to be on his side. A poll from Monmouth University this year showed support for legalization at over 60%, and other polls came in with similar numbers. A 2018 poll from the William J. Hughes Center from Public Policy at Stockton University put the split far closer, with a narrow lead to those supporting legalization, but found that a quarter of those responding would try marijuana if it were legal. Edwards said their internal polling puts the race tighter, and that he wouldn’t be involved if he were only concerned with the polls.

“The question is on the ballot. You have a choice in engaging in this fight or not,” he said. If the vote is yes, it will still be a while before that onein-four New Jersey adults have their chance to try legal marijuana. Rudder said it would likely be in mid-2021 before the administrative rules are in place and the first legal sales are ready, with the first likely to be at the existing medical marijuana facilities. There are 12 licensed throughout the state, with 24 more permits in the works. According to Rudder, the first priority will be to ensure the patients approved for medical marijuana will get their supply before any adult use sales take place. As Edwards points out, there is nothing about potency or the amount an individual may purchase at one time included in the wording of the referendum. It puts the oversight of the new market in the hands of the state commission that now covers the medical market. That’s where limits will be put in place, Rudder said, likely following the systems put in place in other states, which could allow the purchase of up to an ounce of marijuana or its equivalent in edibles or tinctures. There will likely be other limits, he said.

For instance, last year, California brought forth new limits on the allowable potency for cannabis edibles, both per serving and per container, and in 2016, Colorado sought to make THC-infused edibles less appealing to children, banning animal or fruit shapes. That was in addition to earlier rules for child-resistant packaging and warning labels. The ballot question also allows towns to pass an additional tax on sales to help local budgets. There has been some local opposition to legalization. An Ocean City councilman once said at a meeting he would allow a pot store in the dry town

over his dead body, and the Republican leaders in all 21 counties have urged a no vote on the referendum. Others embrace the possibility of new revenue. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small has argued that the city should get a bigger slice of the revenue pie if legal cannabis is approved. This summer, he touted an invitation to Snoop Dogg, rapper, actor and the owner of the California-based cannabis company Leafs by Snoop. Small touted the rapper’s potential investment in Atlantic City, while Snoop Dogg said he would come and cut the ribbon if New Jersey says yes to legalization.

hat do you mean it’s not fall yet? It sure feels like fall as the temperatures are supposed to go down to the 50’s tonight as I write this. We’ve had a smattering of college football games, and the NFL is back. Add all those factored up and it has to be the fall season, right? Well, technically fall 2020 doesn’t officially begin until September 22nd, but as Shore Local switched from a weekly to a bi-monthly publication, I’m going to say again, “Happy Fall” everyone! Since I last wrote, the Flyers saw their playoff run come to an end at the hands of the Islanders. The Phillies can’t beat a certain team from the Sunshine State. The Eagles started the season on a high note, but only for a half. Another prominent name has entered the mix for the Sixers

vacant coaching job. Finally, on the local level, a few guys with Atlantic & Cape May County ties, make it on to NFL rosters to start the season. From the entertainment world, I finally got to see a movie in the theater for the first time since the pandemic. I also wrapped up something pretty cool on Netflix. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Flyers since this is the last time I’ll get to write in detail about them for a while. They forced a Game 7 against the Islanders, but much to my disappointment, failed to show up for that game! Philadelphia meekly went down 4-0 in a Game 7 to bow out of the Stanley Cup playoffs one step shy of the Eastern Conference Finals. ● To be honest, it’s kind of remarkable they made it as far as they did, as you could point the finger at several players for coming up short in the series with the Islanders. Captain Claude Giroux only had ONE goal in the entire postseason, so many folks are going after him. I’d like to know where Travis Konecny disappeared to. In the end, the Flyers did not have enough fire power or speed to

keep up with the Islanders, and that’s why they lost the series. Oh, and will the people asking for a Giroux trade or a Jake Voracek trade please take a minute to consider their contract situation? Giroux and Voracek both have a no-trade clause in their contract. That means, they’d have to agree to waive that clause in order to be moved, and I just don’t see either one of them doing that. Especially not Giroux who has two more years left on Flyers Game 7 loss to the Islanders his contract. make the postseason, so they should make it. Again, how confident are you that they’ll actually be able to make any noise if they get there? Wasn’t this why they replaced Gabe Kapler with Joe Girardi? So the Phillies wouldn’t fade again in September and miss out on October? GM Matt Klentak added four relief pitchers in the past month, but the Phillies still have the worst bullpen in all of baseball. Their lineup without Realmuto and Hoskins doesn’t have much punch! The Phillies lost 7 of the 10 games they played against the Marlins this season. Plus, Phillies fans had to groan as former prospect Sixto Sanchez dominated against the Phils the other night. Sanchez looks like he could be a legitimate big league ace. He was part of the Realmuto trade, and if the Phillies don’t extend Realmuto, it could be compared to the disaster of 1982, when future Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg was thrown in on a deal with the Cubs! Gee, I almost don’t even want to write about my beloved Philadelphia Eagles. They looked so good in building a 17-zip lead early against the Washington Red…er…

Football Team. However, football is 4 quarters, not one and a half, and the Washington Football team scored the next 27 points to win the game by ten. My immediate reaction is to blame Carson Wentz for his second half failures and mistakes. But, the Eagles problems run so much deeper than that. Let’s start with the fact that 3/5ths of the projected starting offensive line was OUT for last Sunday’s game. Brandon Brooks tore his ACL and then left tackle Andre Dillard went down with a torn biceps muscle. Right tackle Lane Johnson had ankle surgery and was not fully recovered, so other than Jason Kelce at center and Isaac Seumalo at left guard, the Birds were really vulnerable against Washington. That certainly showed as the Birds gave up eight sacks on the afternoon! That’s the most they’ve given up in a game in 13 years. You have to go back to the Winston Justice game in 2007 when Donovan McNabb was sacked 12 times by the Giants in East Rutherford. That’s the game where Osi Umenyiora infamously turned Justice into a “turnstile” en route to six of those 12 sacks. Brutal.

The three turnovers didn’t help the Eagles either. Wentz threw two interceptions, but perhaps none more costly than the one right before the half that gave Washington life and helped them get back into the football game. Instead of a 17-zip lead at half and the Eagles would get the ball to start the 3rd quarter, it was 17-7, and Washington had life. Perhaps the most maddening thing of the Eagles blowing their lead in Washington was their refusal to adapt to the pressure as the sacks continued to mount. Not once did they try to roll out Wentz to buy him some time. Not once did they speed up the delivery of the football. Instead, they tried to run long developing plays, and watched as the pocket collapsed quickly around their franchise QB. Here’s the worst part, if you’re an Eagles fan. The Los Angeles Rams come to town next week, and they feature one of the best pass rushers in the league in Aaron Donald.

In fact, as I look at the Eagles schedule, other than maybe the Bengals game, they could easily be 1-5 after six games. Heck, they could wind up 0-6…! Oh yes, I’m not optimistic about that Eagles collapse in their season opener. Let’s see if I’m right. Since I’m on football, this is a good time to talk about two gentleman who I know that are chasing their NFL dreams. One of them is established in the league already, and the other is just trying to get his chance. I’ll start with Penn State grad and St. Augustine alum Austin Johnson as he looked good on “Monday Night Football” against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson (#98) was seen immediately after the game patting Ben Roethlisberger on the helmet after trying to get to him all night. The 26-year-old is now in his 4th year in the NFL after spending the first three with the Tennessee Titans.

The second guy I’d like to recognize is Colin Thompson. The 26-year-old played tight end at my alma mater (Temple) but I got to know him while he did some radio work with 97.3 ESPN last summer. He’s the epitome of perseverance as he finally made it on to an NFL roster this September. He started with the NY Giants in 2017, but an emergency appendectomy ended that stint really quick. He spent time with the Chicago Bears on their practice squad until 2018. He worked out for about a dozen NFL teams, and ultimately played in both the AAF and the XFL just trying to keep his football dream alive. His parents have ties to Cape May, and Thompson even took a job as the offensive coordinator with Lower Cape May football. But his dreams came true when the Carolina Panthers, and his old college coach Matt Rhule, signed him to their 53-man roster. Way to go Colin. I couldn’t be happier for you! Thompson joins a handful of area players in the NFL: Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki (Southern Regional), Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman Jamil Demby (Vineland), Bears

defensive tackle Abdullah Anderson (Absegami), Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead (Millville), Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Jack Crawford (St. Augustine), Cincinnati Bengals long snapper Clark Harris (Southern) and the previously mentioned Austin Johnson with the Giants. My last sports item is about the Sixers and their continuing search for a new head coach. Mike D’Antoni told the Houston Rockets that he wouldn’t sign an extension with them, so when the Rockets lost to the Lakers in the second round of the playoffs, D’Antoni became the latest big name to be added to the mix as a potential next coach. D’Antoni is familiar with the Sixers organization, serving as the team’s associate head coach during the 2015-16 season. He was popular in Philly, and some players were sad when he left. Most predict he will go to the Indiana Pacers next,

but until we know for sure, put D’Antoni in the mix with guys like Tyronn Lue and Billy Donovan as big names being considered for the Sixers coaching job. I’ll close with two items from entertainment as I finally took my

girlfriend on a “date night” to the movies for the first time since the pandemic hit. I was thrilled to see “Tenet” in IMAX at my favorite spot, the Tilton Square Theater. Kudos to Brett DeNafo and his staff for making us feel safe & comfortable with the safety measures in place and social distancing. I only wish I loved the movie more! I am a huge fan of most things Christopher Nolan puts out, but this time travel movie with John David Washington in the lead role just left me wanting more. I can’t put my finger on it. Visually the movie was great. Plot-wise, the movie was okay. Maybe I’m just not ready to accept Washington as a guy who can carry a major picture. Hey, his father Denzel was once a little known guy on “St. Elsewhere” on TV, so you never know, right?

Lastly, I made sure to complete the new Netflix series “Away” before I school and work got the best of me. Starring Hillary Swank as Commander Emma Green, “Away” follows the first crewed expedition to Mars, the Mars Joint Initiative. It features an international crew: A chemist (Chinese); a cosmonaut with the most experience in space (Russia); the second-in-command medical officer (India); and a botanist with no experience in space (Britain); under the command of astronaut Emma Green (American). Emma has a husband who trained as an astronaut along with her (played brilliantly by Josh Charles from “The Good Wife”), who might have commanded the mission but for a medical condition. The three-year mission launches from the Moon. Several crew members do not trust Emma's ability to command because of her response in crisis situations during the mission. The series is described as being "about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things." I’m a sucker for anything about space or NASA, so this one was extremely enjoyable for me. No official word from Netflix just yet, but I’d bet there will be a season 2 for this one. I’ll close with a reminder to please don’t forget to wear your mask when you’re out in public and interacting with others. Be kind, wear your mask, and be patient. We can all knock down this COVID-19 together.

Police Officers in Atlantic County endorse Joe "Tokyo" O'Donoghue for Sheriff

T

he New Jersey PBA Cape Atlantic conference which represents the thousands of current and former law enforcement officers across Atlantic and Cape May County have endorsed Joe "Tokyo" O'Donoghue for Atlantic County Sheriff. "As a police officer for my entire adult life, to have the PBA endorse me is a true honor. I'm honored by the men and women who put on a uniform and a badge to protect our communities each day. Each night I pray for these officers who have put their lives on the line to keep us safe. When I'm elected as your Sheriff in Atlantic County I will do whatever it takes to support them." O'Donoghue said. Joseph "Tokyo" O'Donoghue is a law enforcement professional with over 40 years of experience in policing across Atlantic County. When elected Sheriff Joe "Tokyo" O'Donoghue plans to refocus the Atlantic County Sheriff's

Department back to its core mission of supporting local police departments and keeping our communities safe. "On day one we will put the focus back on working warrants, augmenting local investigations and being a resource for police agencies across Atlantic County." O'Donoghue said. "It's time to get back to real police work." O'Donoghue is happy to receive all the support of police officers across Atlantic County, especially the Atlantic City Police Department. "The officers on the street know that Eric Sheffler is not an effective leader, and they want a change. In Atlantic City, the officers know that before he retired abruptly to run for Sheriff Eric Sheffler was not known as a very effective police officer. It's time for him to go." O'Donoghue said. Enjoy your coffee and still lose weight By Nancy Adler

O

ne of the first questions I’m asked when setting someone on a weight loss / life changing plan is “Does drinking coffee hinder the weight loss process?" While some people may say that coffee helps in weight loss, others say it makes you gain some extra pounds. So, you might be confused about whether drinking coffee while dieting is good or bad. Yes, you can enjoy your cup

PACKED WITH GOOD STUFF

of coffee guilt free in your journey to weight loss. Billions of people fuel themselves up in the morning with a cup of coffee. This is because caffeine stimulates energy and helps you stay awake for longer hours. Drinking coffee curbs your appetite, which means you eat less and lose weight easily. While sweetened coffee beverages will not be of any help, it is important to choose the right coffee. Try not to indulge in flavored coffees and creamers. Even sugar free varieties will hold extra pounds that you’ll never shake. I advise clients to drink plain coffee without milk or sugar, which has a negligible amount of calories. Espresso has just 3 calories and brewed coffee has 5 calories in total. But if you are adding sugar to your coffee, it can add on 16 calories per tablespoon to your cup. If you cannot consume coffee without sugar or cream, then you can choose to add a small amount of honey or real maple syrup with a splash of milk to your coffee. This will add a lot of flavour with minimal calories. Are you on a strict weight loss diet? You might have been advised by your nutritionist or fitness trainer to consume a cup of black coffee everyday. This is because black coffee works magic on your body to cut down extra fat. Also, for those who are working hard in the gym to get in shape, black coffee has some powerful antioxidants which provides energy to your body to exercise for longer hours. Moreover, drinking a cup of black coffee before work out can help you recover from muscle tear or soreness.

While coffee may temporarily squelch your appetite, it can be harmful if not consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption of coffee can result in sleeplessness, anxiety and an increase in blood pressure. For some it can also disturb the bowel movement and cause discomfort. Therefore, it is advised to drink only 1-2 cups of coffee a day and rationalise your caffeine intake for better results in weight loss. Meet Dr. Thelma Witherspoon

r. Thelma Witherspoon has spent her life dedicated to three things: faith, family, and community. Originally from Atlantic City, Witherspoon now resides in Hamilton Township with her daughter and four grandsons, ranging in age from 7-17. Witherspoon's earliest roots are grounded in community. "In 1976, my parents started a church, and seeing them work with all types of people and show up for their community taught me to do the same," shared Witherspoon. "I learned all of that from the church." Witherspoon served as Atlantic City Board of Education President and Vice President. She is now running for Atlantic County Freeholder, District 3 seat, currently held by Ashley Bennett. During the time period Witherspoon served on the Board of Education, much was accomplished. The school district broke ground on two schools, New York Avenue

32

and Sovereign Avenue. The Board of Education additionally enclosed the classrooms of the Uptown Complex and the Martin Luther King Jr. Complex, and completed the expansion of the Chelsea Heights addition. "I started out as president of the Parent Action Council of the New Jersey Avenue School,” Witherspoon said. “I learned the process and after many years of volunteering and advocating on the behalf of parents, I knew if I wanted to affect change I needed to become a school board member. So I ran for office. It was a rewarding and challenging experience." Witherspoon worked for the City of Atlantic City for 35 years. Twenty of those years were in the Department of Revenue and Finance, where she worked in the grants and budgeting unit of the Atlantic City Police Department. This was yet another experience that Witherspoon said taught her how to serve the public. However, Witherspoon says what has shaped her the most is her faith.

Her parents, Bishop Luke and Pastor Juanita Witherspoon, founded Westminster Evangelistic Church, now the Westminster Christian Worship

Center, more than 44 years ago. Witherspoon has been an ordained minister for more than 25 years working alongside her parents. Witherspoon earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biblical Theology from Jameson Bible School and the International Christian University, respectively, and her doctor of divinity degree from the CICA International University. You may also recognize Witherspoon from her long-standing radio show “In The Community with Dr. Thelma Witherspoon” at the local Gospel station WEHA-FM. Witherspoon also served as Vice President of the NAACP Atlantic City Chapter and Atlantic County Committee Person-At-Large of Hamilton Township. She is also a member of the Historical Preservation Commission in Hamilton Township and is a 2015 graduate of LEAD ACT (Lead Atlantic City Tomorrow) a former leadership program sponsored by Stockton University.

How To Show Up For Your Community During The Pandemic

By Chistina Schiaretta

T

his time of year used to feature parents leaping through the aisles of Walmart, throwing crayons, number 2 pencils, notebooks, lunch boxes, backpacks, and you-name-its into a cart like confetti. We overspent because let's face it, we were thrilled for our precious babies to go back to school. Some of us can do that this year. Many can’t. We are now having to recreate our lives by figuring out how to virtually homeschool and work, or take care of the home, or raise babies and toddlers, or even just exist. Every parent is dealing with similar issues. Not every parent is responding in the same way. That is normal and okay. Yet today, I want to challenge you to show up in a way that may be difficult, but that will profoundly

45

impact your community. I want to challenge you to show up with grace, mercy, love, generosity, and support. Throughout the last 5 months, I haven't had one clue how to react to virtual learning or distance learning. I've been busy figuring out how to master my thoughts, anxieties, and emotions while also trying to show up as a mom and a wife, hold my business together, and be a leader for my team among many other roles in my life. I feel like I've been beaten up, yet also built up super fast. You see, failure is the foundation of success. The more we fail, the better we get. This applies to our new virtual experience too. Each failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. The faster we fail and get up and fail again, the faster and closer we move toward excellence. I have failed so hard and so fast since COVID-19 hit. Yet it has produced some invaluable lessons for me, one of the most important being this: my anxiety about COVID-19 comes from uncertainty, which makes me feel as though I have no control. However, that is a lie. It's always a lie. I do have control. I have control over myself, including over my thoughts and

reactions. Virtual school will not kill me. It will be hard. It is hard. I am in the middle of the first day of school and it is so rough. However, I've seen kids walking to school barefoot through monsoon waters and across a tree so I think I'll make it. We're in the middle of a world crisis. It is survival time, and I have to realize that the precious comforts that I had the opportunity to enjoy before are gone for now. I can choose to sulk in my frustration, or accept it and move forward. Here's what I know: the more quickly I choose to accept reality, move forward, and to support my community with grace and empathy, despite whatever is in front of me, the stronger my community will come out on the other side. I have learned this lesson over and over again throughout my life. Today, I thought I'd share one of my favorite lessons on this. When I was nineteen, I traveled to a remote village in Bangladesh. It was six hours outside of the capital, Dhaka, where we were staying. To get to this village, we had to take the following modes of transport: SUV, rickshaw, ferry, walking, SUV, canoe-type boat, hike, and a donkey. Okay, just kidding on that

OUR NEW different INCLUDING “UPSIDE DOWN PIZZA” pizzas (CHEESE ON THE BOTTOM, SAUCE ON TOP)

last one, although that would've made it so much more epic. All of the travel was worth it when we arrived. What I found was pure magic. This community was not nearly what I had ever experienced, growing up at the Jersey Shore! The homes were simple construction of wood or metal sheeting or more often, simply just cow dung. Yep, I said that. People live in homes made of cow poop. That's a thing in 2020, not just in Jesus’s times. That was enough to culture-shock me as a nineteen-year-old girl. The community we were visiting lived together, worked together, played together, worshipped together, and even ate together. They did life together. It was beautiful. Ev-

eryone in this community pulled their money together to buy a cow to cook, just because we were visiting. They all gave in their week's pay. They didn't even have electricity. It was humbling to the absolute core. Oh by the way, did I mention their church was destroyed in the monsoon, months before? These people overflowed with love, grace, mercy, and generosity even though their church (which was the most important thing to them) had been washed away. It was now being rebuilt on an island, with no access except by boat. Imagine getting construction materials on a canoe and rowing it to a small island over vast floodwaters. Talk about showing up for your community. I'm not talking about a community with money to do this. I am talking about people with absolutely nothing, who had to rebuild with what little resources they could pull together. Yet, this community

was so full of joy and generosity, even when times were unbelievably tough. They didn't let the monsoon define or defeat them. They didn't start blaming each other and allow division to come into the community. They knew it wasn't the community's fault. It was a situation that happened that no one was equipped to handle, yet they did handle it. They handled it together. They united and persevered. I'm sure they failed along the way. However, they found a way not just to rebuild, but to build stronger. They were not just rebuilding; they were rebuilding stronger so that if a monsoon were to come again, their place of worship would withstand. Wow, what a lesson. You see, it wouldn't have made sense if they had allowed division to come into the community. They needed unity, grace, and support in order to stand back up and come out stronger. They all needed each other. Each member

Seven Theaters with Leather Reclining Seats

of the community had a different job. Some would cook. Some would take care of the kids. Some would farm, or fish, or travel to market, or sell goods, or build structures, or whatever. They all served however they could. Everyone was needed and everyone was appreciated, because of how they showed up when times were tough. Two days in that village and I was changed forever. Here's what I learned: the grace, love, and support (or lack thereof) that you show your community during tough times will define you and will impact your community for generations to come. What would have happened if they would've divided instead of united? What if a portion of the community decided they didn't want to do extra work or whatever needed to be done because of the monsoon? The church might not be around for them or for the generations to come. Life is hard everywhere, but you're in control of your response

in tough times. Your community needs you to show up with grace, mercy, and support right now. We need you to choose empathy. I am challenging you this week. These are your people, like it or not. Give grace. Give mercy. Give love. Be empathetic. Try to understand someone besides yourself. Be generous. Be supportive. You got this. Until next time Shore Locals, I am sending you peace, love, and good vibes from my quarantine home to yours! Postcards from the Past

The Galleon was built in 1926 as a real estate office to attract buyers to the Neptune's Gardens development in Absecon. It was built as a replica of Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria. It was also known as the Ship house. The ship was originally built on wetlands and accessed by a wooden plank walkway at the Absecon Beach Camp. At that time, there was a seafood restaurant in the building and a miniature version of the Absecon lighthouse nearby. When the real estate market bottomed out, the building was moved three miles away. It was used as an Atlantic gas station and various shops, restaurants, and offices over the years. Towards the end, it housed a seldom-open antiques shop. In the late 1980s or early 1990s, the building was painted white with light blue trim. This was the last of three ship real estate offices built. One of these was for the Pirate Ship Realty Co. in Cliffwood Beach, NJ which was destroyed by fire in 1993. The ship in Absecon was demolished in 2009. Name :

The Benefits of Pilates Shore Fit By Bonnie Miller

P

ilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength, and balance. I’ve done mat Pilates until I discovered the Pilates Reformer, which is a piece of equipment. The reformer was invented by Pilates founder, Joseph Pilates, and has a bed-like frame with a flat platform on it called a carriage. It rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end by a set of springs. The springs provide different levels of resistance as the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame. The carriage has shoulder blocks on it that keeps you from sliding off the end of the reformer as you push or pull the carriage during exercise. At the end of the reformer, by the springs there is an adjustable bar called a foot bar. The foot bar can be used by the feet or hands as a practitioner moves the carriage. The reformer also has long straps with handles on them that are attached to the top end of the frame. The straps can be pulled with legs or arms to move the carriage as well. The resistance of the springs is what makes the carriage more or less difficult to move. The reformer’s parts are adjustable for differing body sizes and different levels of skill. It’s awesome because it progresses

with you as you get stronger. A wide variety of exercises are done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance. One of the best things about the reformer is its versatility. Beginner to advanced exercises can be performed on this. The reformer offers all the benefits of mat Pilates including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. These things, in turn, lead to daily life improvements like better posture, graceful and efficient movement, and for many, relief from pain. The reformer is large enough to accommodate all body types and sizes. The instability of a rolling carriage with the springs set at different levels of resistance provides all kinds of stability challenges that develop your core strength and promote better balance. For example, having less of the body on the carriage is one of the ways Pilates exercises get harder. This just means that more body weight has to be supported by the user. When the springs are in a lighter setting, some exercises are more challenging for the core because it has to work harder to control and stabilize the movement. The stronger the core, the better the balance, posture, and overall well-being. The best way to learn Pilates reformer is in a class or through private instruction. Once you learn some exercises and begin to understand the foundations of Pilates, it starts to click and you don’t have to think as much. This can be a novel way to switch up your exercise routine. Bonnie Miller is certified fitness instructor at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center and the JCC in Margate. She is a mom of three and resides Somers Point.

Bio-Oxidation and How It Can Help You By Dr. Sam Jonuzi

O

xygen is the most important nutrient to human life. Without oxygen, there is no life, with oxygen there is an abundance of life. Oxygen is the difference between earth and every other planet in the universe. Earth is alive and all other planets are dead because of oxygen. The quality of life depends on oxygen. Today, in the most ideal location on the planet, oxygen levels can reach 20% at best, but in most cities’ oxygen levels are much lower. Severely polluted cities oxygen levels could drop below 10% causing rampant physical and mental disease, deterioration and decline. We can live for weeks without food, days without water, but only a few minutes without oxygen. Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Science in both 1931 and 1950. In 1931 he proved a cause of cancer is the lack of oxygen at the cellular level. There are many stages of various symptoms a person goes through over a 20 to

30 year period before cancer is diagnosed. Most of these symptoms are connected to oxygen deficiency. In effect, all diseases are rooted in an oxygen deficiency. Who are the healthiest people on the planet? They are gold medal winning athletes, mountain climbers, people like Lance Armstrong who overcame cancer and won the Tour De France seven times. This is one of the most grueling athletic events ever imagined. What do these super healthy people have in common? Their cells are saturated with oxygen! Who are the sickest people on our planet? Those lingering in cancer wards and hospitals. What do all these sick people have in common? They are all without exception, Hypoxia. What does this mean? They are deficient in oxygen at the cellular level. Those who are totally hypoxia we find in our cemeteries. The difference between life and death is oxygen. Oxygen levels equate with our state of health. Oxygen is nature’s great cleanser, purifier and detoxifier. Ozone is basically super oxygen containing an extra molecule of oxygen. It is this extra electron that makes it such powerful medicine. Ozone is a germicidal, antiviral, antibiotic, anti parasite, antibacterial, anti-pathogen, anti-fungal, and anti-cancer. It is more effective with zero downside effects than the pharmaceutical

industry’s most powerful drugs. Ozone is not patentable. Do you think the medical/ drug industry wants you to know about ozone and oxidation therapies? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy compresses oxygen into every cell of your body in a pressurized chamber. Oxygen in your red blood cells is increased up to ten times that of normal. The blood then carries the oxygen to the brain and every cell of your body that is deficient in oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has reversed symptoms of strokes, brain trauma and brain injury. It speeds the body’s healing process and is used to heal wounds, and for recovery after surgery. It also combats chronic fatigue and all types of vital conditions. All oxidative therapies are effective; each oxidation modality introduces oxygen into the body differently. According to “Mr. Oxygen”, Ed McCabe, one of the nations’s leading authorities on oxygen and author of “Flood your body with oxygen”, direct I.V Ozone is the fastest way to flood your cells with oxygen. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the best way to get oxygen into the brain and different tissues to get to fight infection, relieve pain, prevent strokes, and repair after surgery: ● Ozone rectal insufflation is an effective way to infuse ozone into the blood stream, colon, and liver. It is ideal for killing worms, parasites, fungal conditions and yeast Candida.

Ozone vaginal insufflation is excellent for bladder, kidney, and vaginal infections. Candida and other such conditions. Ozone super bath pulls toxins, environmental pollutions out of the skin and infuses the ozone, as it relaxes the nerves, muscles, joints, and purifies the skin in a stainless-steel whirlpool. Ionic foot detox bath pulls toxins out of the body electronically and then infuses ozone into the body by the way of the acupuncture points of the feet. Ozone infused far infrared sauna is the most effective detoxifier, cleanser, and purifier discovered to date. It pulls toxins out, burns fat, and infuses ozone through the skin in to the blood stream. I.V. Medical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Drip is a magnificent immune system enhancer.
