I

f you saw a dolphin swimming in a creek your first reaction would probably be a double take. Hopefully your second would be to call the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) in Brigantine. Luckily, that's what happened earlier this month when the MMSC was called out to a bottlenose dolphin stranded in a Middle Township creek.

After assessing the situation, it took the rescue team ten exhausting hours to capture the seven foot dolphin,

Bob Schoelkopf, founding director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center which was then transported to the Delaware Bay and safely released.

The MMSC relies on the public to call in potential strandings. "If someone finds an

injured or sick animal they should keep their distance and call us," said Bob Schoelkopf, founding director. "Never touch or feed the animal, and do not try to chase it back into the ocean. Keep other people and dogs away, these are wild animals and are federally protected." Additionally, taking a photo and sending it to the center can help them assess if the animal needs assistance. "A seal on the beach is not always stranded," said Bob. Bob founded the center in 1978 and runs it with his wife Sheila Dean, along with a small staff and hundreds of vol-

The MMSC has an Intensive Care Unit and a Pool House where they treat and shelter the animals before they can be released back into the ocean. By law the public can not visit the rehabbing animals, but some can be viewed on a live feed to a TV set up in the Marine Mammal Museum.

Hometown Hero: Linda Smith

magine having nothing to eat.

Or worse, not having any food to offer your hungry child.

Most people cannot imagine, but many in Atlantic County experience this every day. However, Linda Smith and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, southern branch in Egg Harbor Township’s mission is to help.

Topping the nation in foreclosure, multiple casino closings and devastation remaining from hurricane Sandy have combined to create challenging circumstances for many of us.

Food insecurity is the new word for hunger. It refers to people that do not have dependable access to a sufficient quantity of nutritious food.

They do not know where their next meal is coming from. This impacts 1 in 6 kids in New Jersey, but in Atlantic County it is 21%, more than 1 in 5.

Hunger in America looks very different than what is projected in the media. Rather than distended bellies

To those facing these circumstances, Linda Smith and all the volunteers like her, are angels on earth.

Linda volunteers several days a week at both the Community Food Bank in Egg Harbor Township and at the Main Street Pantryin Mays Landing.

She greets each person as they arrive and hands them an emergency box of food.

On Tuesdays, Linda arrives first thing in the morning at a local grocery store that is one of the food bank’s

She goes on to describe the joy she felt being able to give a single mom of five a special donation of backpacks loaded with school supplies for her children. She hugged me and said “You don’t know how much this means to me.”

Linda does not like to be called a hero. However, to that mom and to the person that came to the Community Food Bank yesterday, today or tomorrow, she sure is.

argate Commissioner Maury Blumberg likes the idea of a bike path on the beaches of Margate, but according to news sources, he would prefer to bring back the boardwalk. This very interesting idea was just one of the topics discussed as bikes, boardwalks, road-diets & pedestrian plans were presented to Ventnor and Margate residents on Aug. 8 and 9.

The goal of the bike & pedestrian reports is to make Downbeach roads safer for walkers and bicyclists. Some highlights of the proposed plans: ● ● ●

Margate & Ventnor to install bike racks at beachfront street ends Reducing speed limit from 35-mph to 25-mph on Atlantic Ave. A ‘road diet’ was recommended for Atlantic, Ventnor and Jerome avenues.

It would result in a slowdown in traffic.

Four lanes of traffic would be squeezed into 2, creating one lane of traffic in each direction.

Create center turn lane.

Create bicycle lanes on both outer sides of street.

OCEAN CITY EVENTS - KING AND QUEEN OF PLOP SET FOR SEPT. 2

ur annual event to welcome the fall season, THE KING AND QUEEN OF PLOP or Mr. Fall Guy and Miss Fall Gal, will be held on Friday, Sept. 2, starting 11 a.m. at the Ninth Street Beach next to the Ocean City Music Pier. Contestants are asked to greet the fall, always a lovely time of year, by plopping dramatically to the sand in SLOW MOTION. Those performing the most dramatic renditions will be crowned the King and Queen of Plop. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Entry is free. Trophies will be awarded to the King and Queen.

This year we are insisting plopping be performed in slow motion. Anyone ignoring this requirement will be disqualified.

We will welcome back Ryan Carroll of Ocean City, the first King of Plop, who won the title in 2007 when he was 11 years old.

ou may well be shocked or at least taken aback at how many players there are who work typically on their swing action but hardly ever (if ever) work on their golf grip.

In this instance, I mean the golf grip of their hands, not the rubber grip on the shaft. When you think about it though, the full swing action begins with the golf grip, which will need to boost its relevance in getting it correct.

If your golf grip does not work, why should anything that comes after work?

There is a unbiased grip for any golf enthusiast. That golf grip is when your arm hangs straight down from the shoulder socket and the direction of your target side hand. t can make no distinction whether you use an overlapping, interlocking, or ten-finger grip. What IS crucial is the slope the club is placed in your hand.

To uncover your neutral grip, to begin

with take your address spot, but without having a golf club, and make it possible for both arms to hang downward from the shoulders. Remain relaxed, there ought to be no stiffness in your arms or hands.

Atlantic County Economic Turn Around: It’s About You and Me

e have all heard about the glass half full or half empty. Clearly we can all adopt the position in our county of the glass being half empty that is the easy way out. However, I am here to tell you it is half full. We are bucking the downturn of Atlantic City. We are battling the State elected officials who want Casinos in North Jersey and who want to take over the City. The war

isn’t over yet. How many sport events are won in the final seconds? Attitude is everything. If we think we lost, we are done. If we truly employ a winning attitude we will win.

Recently, the County conducted a research report to identify past, and current economic conditions along with future opportunities.

The Casino industry is the obvious economic engine for the region, however it is not the only answer for our future growth. Several other sectors manifest growth avenues that we are currently pursuing such as the Stockton Aviation Park, the medical community, non-casino entertainment, expansion of higher education such as Stockton and Rowan.

After well over a year delay with breaking ground for the Aviation Park, it appears that we are finally very close to starting the greatest Economic Engine that we have seen in decades. When this 400,000 square foot Park eventually comes

to fruition, it should be a beginning of an era of an industry that will provide well-paying and stable jobs.

This single activity will have a positive ripple effect through- out the including but not limited to medical, retail, further support offi ce and services in general.

Atlantic City also has positive upcoming news with regard to Stockton University and South Jersey Industries hopefully breaking ground with two new sites off of Albany Avenue. Showboat sale to Bart Blatstein will bring some new and exciting entertainment. Eventually the Revel will open up with a new theme. Several development projects are scheduled to break ground in the near future.

I have been a commercial Realtor for the past 32 years. In order to stay relevant, I constantly have to reinvent my marketing methods and the way I sell and lease properties. I could throw up my arms and choose the

Recycle Plastic Bottles but NOT Plastic Bags

ave you ever wondered why some items are accepted in your curbside recycling bin while others are not? Why a plastic fork is not allowed but a plastic bottle is? There are many complex explanations that can be given, but there are two main reasons why items are deemed unacceptable - The item may be inefficient or even dangerous to sort.

Items from your curbside recycling bin are sorted at the at ACUA’s Environmental Park. Items are first sorted by worker’s hands. That’s why it’s crucial that dangerous items like sharps and syringes never make their way into curbside bins. Next, they pass through various machines that were built specifically to sort items accepted in the single-stream program. When other items like plastic bags, hazardous chemicals or large pieces of metal make their way through the machines, they can cause costly breakdowns, or worse, fires and employee injuries.

Sometimes there is no market for the item.

Recycling markets help dictate the items accepted curbside. Without paper mills eager to accept used paper for reuse there would be no practical reason to collect paper in our recycling bins. A few years ago, the market for cartons expanded, which made it viable for our program to accept them. That said, recycling is a long-term commitment. Like other industries, recycling markets fluctuate, and we don’t discontinue recycling when markets are temporarily down.

It’s also important to remember that when we purchase items made with recycled content, we encourage businesses to keep using recycled materials in their products.

There are items which can diminish the value of other recyclables. For example, a plastic take-out container filled with food will contaminate newspaper that’s in the same bin, making it unacceptable to paper mills.

Pyrex, although made of glass, is treated with chemicals that make glass from bottles lose its value when mixed together. Caps and lids are often made from a different grade of plastic than the bottle or container they’re on – that’s why they should be removed.

ITEMS YOU SHOULD NEVER RECYCLE Syringes or Needles –These pose significant health risks to workers on the sorting line. Medical waste should be disposed of properly at a medical facility.

Plastic Bags – These destroy sorting machinery and can cause significant downtime. They can be recycled efficiently through designated bins at grocery and department stores.

Scrap Metal and Appliances – These items can be dangerous and are way too large for sorting equipment. Check with your town’s for disposal information.

Electronics– Electronics contain harmful yet valuable materials. They are banned from both the trash and recycling bin and must be taken to a certified recycler. See acua.com/ electronics for additional information.

Pleasantville's Olympic Medalist

Do you know what they used to call organically produced wine? Answer: wine.

A

P

leasantville’s Nia Ali became part of history in Rio. Ali won a silver medal in the 100 meter hurdles this week. Afterwards, Ali took a victory lap with her 15 month old son, Titus, in her arms.

Ali is originally from Philadelphia, but moved to Pleasantville her senior year and graduated from Pleasantville high school in 2006. Ali still

holds the Cape-Atlantic league record for the 100 meter hurdles.

Pleasantville Public School’s website has a photo of Ali and a message congratulating her. Additionally, the city has run it’s own congratualations on it’s electronic billboard at City Hall. A parade is also being planned if Ali will be able to attend. She now resides and trains in Los Angeles, CA.

Tricky business sorting through all of this. I’m sometimes amazed that some of the customers I meet look like they just came from the gym, but when I look at what’s in their shopping cart, I can’t help but want to scold them for what’s in there. If you are what you eat, then doesn’t that also apply to what you drink?

Besides. Real wine just tastes better.

With so many different types of certifications, how is the average customer supposed to keep track of what’s good, and what’s not? USDA Organic isn’t necessarily all it’s cracked up to be. Many European winemakers are moving away from becoming certified because of costs, or simply because it’s too restrictive and they want to do even better. Biodynamic farming takes about 10 years or more to become certified, and to people that aren’t familiar with it, seems like some kind of crazy witchcraft.

If you think about it, grapes have been making wine all on their own much longer than we have. They have everything they need. Sugar, yeast. Yup. That’s all you need other than a place to put it. Wines that are made in a minimally invasive manner are the

wines that really knock my socks off. Here are 2 of my favorites…

Sylvain Bock “Suck A Rock” 2013: 100% Merlot from Northern Rhone, France. 100% organic. This wine is made using a whole cluster fermentation style (think Beaujolais), so very little tannins, light, fruit forward and fun! Chill this a bit and take it out for sushi!

On top of being organic, this wine is naturally produced, meaning only the native yeasts are used for fermentation. No filtering or fining, so this wine is also vegan friendly. $18.99.

Domaine Vincent Ricard “Les Trois Chenes” 2014: 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Touraine, Loire Valley, France. All of his wines are Biodynamically produced. This selection is a game changer. Round, soft and elegant, with stone fruit and fresh melon on the mid palate and tingly minerals hanging on during the finish. Somers Point's Namesake & War Hero

O

ur hero, Richard Somers, served in the Navy in the Mediterranean Sea This young officer came up a courageous plan. While in command of the Nautilus, he proposed to fit up the ketch Intrepid as a fire ship and sail her into the Tripoli Harbor and explode her amongst the enemy ships. Commodore Preble accepted the plan, and the Intrepid was fitted with 1500 pounds of gunpowder, a quantity of shells, shot, broken iron, and combustibles.

Combustibles were connected by a tube with the powder as a fuse. It was intended that the crew sail the vessel into the harbor under the dark of night close to the pirate ships, ignite the combustibles, and quickly row to safety in the rowboats by the time the flames reached the powder.

The expectation was that much of the enemy flotilla would be destroyed by the explosion.

All men, knowing this mission could mean their death, volunteered. They included: Lieutenant Henry Wadsworth, Joseph “Pickle” Israel, William Harrison, Robert Clark, Hugh McCormick, Jacob Williams, Peter Penner, Isaac W. Downs, James Simms, Thomas Tompline, James Harris, and William Keith.

On the eve of September 3, 1804, the

Intrepid sailed into Tripoli Harbor. Upon entering the harbor, several shots were heard by the waiting fleet of Commodore Preble outside the harbor.

Watching and waiting, a sudden explosion was seen. Preeble’s fleet

kept vigil throughout the night, but no sign of Richard and his crew appeared.

According to the journal of a seaman in the squadron, “…the Ketch USS Intrepid got under way and was sent into Tripoli as a fire ship. Commanded by Capt. Somers, he had our green cutter to make their escape from her.

It is supposed that she took fire in the magazine sooner than was intended, or that they attempted to be boarded by the Tripolitans and blew her up sooner than suffer themselves to fall into the hands of the Tripolitans, as she had 100 barrels of powder on board. The loss of those brave officers and men are much to be regretted by their country and friends. Capt. Somers was as brave and enterprising an officer as ever stepped on the deck of a ship, possessing every virtue that the human heart is susceptible of…” Richard Somers was born at the intersection of Bethel and Shore Road, Somers Point.

A SHORT HISTORY OF SOMERS POINT Somers Point was originally settled by John Somers, an Englishman and practicing Quaker, who bought the land from Thomas Budd. Early names for the area were Somer set Plantation, Somers Ferry, and Somers Plantation, named after the first settlers in 1693. The land purchased originally covered all of Somers Point, part of Linwood, and went into Egg Harbor Township. In the early years it was part of Gloucester County, because Atlantic County had not yet been named.

The name Somers Point was adopted in 1750. It was a seafaring town and sloops, schooners, and barges were built in the many shipyards located along the Greate Egg Harbor Bay, Greate Egg Harbor River, and Patcong Creek. The Sooy Boat works was located on Shore Road, and the completed ships were rolled on logs down Shore Road to Delaware Avenue, and then down to the bay. Shipbuilding and life along the water ways was a very important part of life in early Somers Point.

Numerous memorials were given to Master Commandant Somers, including the honor of having seven ships named USS Somers, and a monument at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. 2. Site of Colonel Richard Somers Tavern and Homestead, circa 1771, later called the Deborah Jane Somers Anderson House Col. Richard Somers was prominent in the Revolutionary War, engaging in privateering, holding interest in several schooners and the militia. The present home served as an inn and tavern, and was later the home of Deborah Jane Somers Anderson, daughter of Richard L. Somers, the last Somers to own the Mansion. 3. Colonel Richard Somers Family Burial Plot / New York Avenue School Original gravestones of the Col. Richard Somers family, circa 1790, are in the south wall. The monument in the center of the plot, erected in 1850, is dedicated to Master Commandant Richard Somers, USN, who died September 4, 1804, in the Battle

of Tripoli. New York Avenue School, built in 1912, replaced a small wooden schoolhouse adjacent to the burial plot. It is used today as Administration Offices, as well as Pre K and K classes.

4. Somers Point Historical Museum (745 Shore Road – next to City Hall) This building, originally the West Jersey Baptist Church, was built in 1886 on land donated by Jesse Somers. The one-story frame structure is Colonial-style architecture, with a small belfry and plain glass windows. It now serves as the local historical museum. Phone for hours: (609) 927-2900. County and city historical plaque.

5. Somers Point City Hall / Richard Somers Display This 1985 building houses municipal offices and police headquarters. In the council chambers is a permanent photo exhibit from the US Naval Archives honoring Richard Somers, naval hero.

6. Richard Somers Monument and Park (Future Mural Project) The monument dedicated to Barbary War hero Richard Somers, who died in the explosion of the Intrepid in Tripoli, Libya, was dedicated in 2013. The bronze bust duplicates the bust from Somers, New York, sculpted by Luigi Badia.

7. Atlantic County Historical Society (907 Shore Road) The Atlantic County Historical Society has been preserving the history of Atlantic County and southern New Jersey since 1913. Volunteer staff is available to assist visiting researchers and genealogists in the library, which is the largest repository of historical and genealogical documents in the county. Free, guided tours are offered in the museum, where more than 20,000 pieces of local history are waiting to be discovered. 8. Historic Somers Mansion Built between 1720 and 1726 byRichard Somers, son of John Somers, the first area settler, it is Atlantic County’s oldest house still standing. It is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and the Historic American Buildings Survey. Owned by the State of New Jersey; Call for hours: (609) 927-2212.

9. Somers Family Cemetery The headstones in the small family plot mark the graves of early members of the Somers family through the 1800s.The large monument marks the resting place of Richard L. Somers and his wives, the last Somers’ owners of the Mansion.

10. Job’s Ferry Marker This location was named for John Somers’ 11th child. In 1695 John Somers was granted permission to join Great Egg Harbor and Cape May County by means of a ferry across the Great Egg Harbor Bay near this location. Aflat boat with tiller and oar ferried people and merchandise. A single crossing cost 12 pence per person.

alloway – The Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winslow Noyes Foundation and The Noyes Museum of Art announced the transfer of ownership of the art museum and artwork, both formerly located in the Oceanville section of Galloway, to Stockton University.

The Noyes Foundation will continue to provide annual bequests to the university, primarily to support art acquisition.

Stockton initially will expand The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University’s footprint at Hammonton’s Kramer Hall, and will designate a permanent location in the future. The Noyes Foundation retains ownership of the museum’s former Oceanville location, which is currently for sale.

“The Noyes Museum has been an arts and culture icon in South Jersey since 1983, and Stockton is very excited to continue this tradition,” said Stockton President Harvey Kesselman. “Having a museum of this caliber adds great value to our students’ experiences and offers a number of opportunities to appreciate art and engage in cultural activities.”

The Noyes Museum already has strong ties to the university, including installations at satellite facilities in the Arts Garage and Sculpture Walk in Atlantic City, N.J. and at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. It is a key partner in Hammonton’s Arts District and operates the Noyes Museum Gallery in Stockton’s Kramer Hall, where museum and university staff collaborate with other groups to present exhibits including the upcoming show, “Hammonton: 150 Years of Agriculture,” from Aug. 22-Dec. 31 during the town’s Sesquicentennial.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winslow Noyes Foundation, I am excited that the Noyes Museum of Art’s lengthy partnership with Stockton University is now culminating in the university’s ownership and operation of the museum,” said Michael Hyett, president of the Noyes Foundation board. “This agreement protects and serves the interests of all parties and, especially, the people of our region who have for so long supported the museum as an organization of distinction.

I anticipate that the university will wholeheartedly preserve the mission and vision of the museum board, the foundation board

and, most importantly, our founders, Fred and Ethel Noyes, who would be extremely proud that their creation has come so far.”

Hyett said an advisory committee consisting of members of the Stockton community and the museum board “will help ensure that the heart and soul of the museum will remain vital and a key ingredient in the South Jersey cultural landscape.”

“I’d like to thank everyone involved who helped bring this to fruition and, in particular, Dr. Harvey Kesselman, for his insight, leadership, sensitivity and dedication to fulfilling the dream of the perpetuation of our South Jersey cultural gem, the Noyes Museum of Art,” Hyett said.

The Noyes Museum of Art was the vision of local entrepreneurs Fred and Ethel Noyes, who were avid art and antique collectors.

Fred was also an academically trained artist who produced many works reflecting his love of southern New Jersey's natural features. His art and personal collection of vintage bird decoys are part of the museum’s extensive collection of 19th- to 21st-century fine and folk art.

“For the past 33 years, the Noyes Museum Board of Directors and the Noyes Foundation have provided leadership and support that has made the museum a cultural hub in southern New Jersey,” said Michael Cagno, executive director. “This has enabled the museum to provide many opportunities for artists and community engagement throughout the region. Stockton’s support for the past six years has been nothing but exemplary and will only provide deeper engagement opportunities to better serve the museum’s members and the community at-large.”

Dean Lisa Honaker, of Stockton’s School of Arts and Humanities, elaborated on how the change will benefit students.

“Bringing the Noyes officially and more permanently under Stockton will offer many opportunities for joint activities and projects,” said Honaker. “We see opportunities for our students to work with portions of the Noyes collection as well as opportunities for collaborations with other Stockton programs and units, such as the South Jersey History & Culture Center, the Visual Arts program and the Performing Arts Center, which will benefit students and the community alike.”

he beach concert fun continues into September as Atlantic City hosts the free AC Community Beach Fest featuring Bel BivDeVoe, En Vogue and special guest speakers, thanks to a partnership with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and Live Nation.

s you know, it’s been a very warm and humid summer.

There have been many days that we have seen an on-shore breeze, or sea breeze develop with the consistent winds coming in from the east and southeast. A sea breeze causes the ocean water to warm up. Last week the ocean water decided to go for the record and it broke it with 83.3 degrees.The previous record of 83.1 was set five years ago. The ocean warms slower than land areas so the highest water temperature typically occurs this time of year. The Gulf Stream is another reason why the water can get very warm this time of year as water temperatures out there are consistently in the mid and upper 80's.

Just as soon as the water reaches 83 degrees, here comes the big drop. Wow. In a matter of 48 hours the ocean went from record levels to below normal temperatures.

Last weekend the ocean dropped to 64 degrees and the huge change is caused by one thing: Upwelling.

This involves a persistent wind from the west or southwest. Those winds normally heat up the inland areas but a west wind is parallel to the shore.

That factor causes the warm surface water to get pushed out to sea and replaced by the colder water from below.

A strong El Nino is a contributing factor to the record ocean temperatures on the east coast and worldwide. As we transition to La Nina, the water will get much colder and it's

likely that the ocean will not get close to this warm for quite awhile.

It's very interesting how the ocean can go from record breaking hotto borderline cold in a matter of 48 hours, and one thing that changes it is the wind direction. A sea breeze usually means warm water, cooler at the beach. A west wind means hot on the mainland, hot at the beach and much cooler ocean water. When that change in wind direction occurs, a drop of ten to fifteen degrees is normal and that can occur in a matter of hours.

I hope all of you are enjoying your summer and got to experience the record breaking ocean temperatures last week, and while this won't happen again for a while, going swimming in the ocean is definitely a relief.

I

rub the scar on my knee, the residue left behind after surgery to repair a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and meniscus, and I am reminded that the tragedy I caused began by misunderstanding pain. Like a serpentine river and its many branches, the scar formed of multiple incisions runs down the center of my kneecap. Seven years later, these still-numb lacerations are reminders that pain out of perspective is pain without purpose.

After I discovered I had injured my knee in the last professional soccer game I would ever play (though I did not know that at the time), I allowed out-of-perspective pain to leave me without proper perspective. At the time of the injury, I thought, “Woe is me,” which

automatically had my future in professional soccer hanging in the balance. I had already weighed my future against the pain and believed I’d never play again. I was right — but not because of my knee injury, but because my out-of-perspective pain led to infi nitely greater pain caused by me.

I thought I knew pain on March 1, 2009, the day I tore my knee. I would have said I was well acquainted with pain, that I was familiar with pain, that I understood pain. But just six days later, the early morning of March 7, I would learn about real pain.

March 6 fell on a Friday, and I was feeling sorry for myself about my possible career-ending injury and that sorrow led to a false sense of entitlement. Pride. So I hit the Philly bar scene with friends. Drinking

away my pain and leaning into my pride. Hours later, I would feel real pain with the realization that I had ended someone’s life. This pain, which is with me as vividly today as it was at that moment, has taught me about my out-of-balance perspective and the arrogant me.

I had missed the major lesson in the minor pain. You see, the initial pain should have humbled me, and I should have limped straight to God with all my pain--physical and emotional. It didn’t have to come to this. Humility can be learned without tragedy. I challenge others to humble themselves before out-of-perspective pain does it for them. Again, you can choose humility or humiliation will choose you.

I once again rub the scar on my knee, and I am reminded of all that

God has healed in my past. This scar has a story to tell about the purpose of pain and sorrow; I know that scars may be ugly, but God sees a story.
