L

abor Day Weekend is bittersweet at the Jersey Shore. It is the conclusion of our busiest and most fruitful season.

There is no doubt that the Summer of 2020 was one of a kind. However, visitors still flocked and enjoyed all that the Jersey Shore offers. The hard work and dedication of laborers including lifeguards, merchants, cooks, servers and hospitality staff, police and first responders, and public works employees kept everyone safe and comfortable this summer. Given the extraordinary circumstances and challenges we faced this year, that is something to be proud of!

Hardship often inspires new opportunities. Out of necessity, many found new and innovative ways to get the job done. Some were so effective that we thought to ourselves "Why didn't we think of that earlier?" The

pandemic was a game changer for American laborers across all industries. On this day that we pay tribute to workers, we cannot forget those on the front lines of the virus, our medical and essential workers!

While Bob and I hunkered down at home, like many on our computers, essential workers showed up every single day even, when the curve was far from flat.

Doctors, nurses and all medical personnel that came face to face with Covid-19, caring for those in need. They revealed their courage and commitment. We owe them our gratitude.

Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. It's exciting to learn that an Ocean City resident played a key role in making Labor Day the national holiday it is. Read more in Fred Miller's column on page 21.

Sunflowers Rise Again After Damaging Storm in Upper Township

I

f you’ve ever driven by it, you will definitely remember it. The Sunflower Farm on the corner of Route 50 and 610 in Upper Township, is on the corner of Dennisville-Petersburg Road and South Old Tuckahoe Road, offers a breathtaking view of sunflowers as far as the eye can see.

Donald Westergom has been farming sunflowers in that location for 20 years now. “Every year I plant a couple hundred thousand,” says

Now together with Ketty Lippi, they tend to the sunflowers that Ketty affectionately calls “their girls.”

July through mid September, they have a roadside farm stand bursting with fresh cut sunflowers that sell for

only .50 each with an honesty can for the many patrons that stop by to get their sunflowers.

Each morning, Donald and Ketty check on “their girls” and Donald cuts a couple hundred for the day’s sales.

In recent years the sunflower farm has become more and more popular. Westergom attributes that to Facebook, with more folks sharing photos of the sunflowers along with information about the farm’s location.

The Sunflower Farm has become a very sought after place to take pho-

tos for special occasions. Westergom shares that many engagement and wedding photos are taken in those sunflower fields.

It has become so in demand that they had to add another honesty can, charging $5 per photo session.

Artists come from all around to sketch and paint the sunflowers. Art clubs go into the fields and set up their easels on a regular basis. But the strangest request that Wester-

When I asked Westergom why sunf lowers , he smiled and replied “I like how happy it makes everyone. Nothing else makes people so happy.” I had to agree.

Virtual Classes Offer New Horizons

he summer season is winding down, which means many kids and young adults are hitting the books again.

As the new school year begins, colleges and schools throughout the country are utilizing online technology to harness the power of knowledge. The internet provides a world of information at our fingertips, with endless opportunities to learn new subjects. There are some great online programs, even if some of us would rather be taking classes in person.

There are many advantages for taking an online class. For one, it’s convenient. You don’t have to leave your home! You can often adjust each course to a time that fits your own personal schedule. Plus, it's good for the environment. You don’t have to drive to take a class, which not only saves time and money, but also low-

ers the consumption of gas, oil and air pollution.

Some have found that physical online classes to be an incentive to get fit. South Jersey based Grace and Glory Yoga provides daily livestream yoga, with instruction for all skill levels. Fitness centers and instructors have gotten creative by staying connected with their loyal clients through Zoom and Instagram Live.

Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Duolingo has step-by-step instruction for over 38 different languages.

Duolingo’s app and website make language learning easy by providing different lessons for each skill level.

If you want to expand your creativity, edX provides a bundle of informative and instructional courses. Topics

covered include poetry, art history, world cultures, design, engineering

and many more.

Staying connected with the community has never been more important. The Ocean City Free Public Library offers an assortment of virtual programs for the entire family.

Workshops and lectures are held regularly, along with monthly book clubs, language lessons, young adult programs and more.

All programs are free to attend, however you must register in advance by visiting the library’s website.

Online science classes also offer a wide range of essential topics, from chemistry and biology to physics and astronomy.

These courses can stimulate your interest, build on your career and help you learn a new skill.

There are so many courses to choose from to exercise our brains into action! Keeping the mind active can lead to creative and productive ideas. As we transition to the fall and winter months and look for new activities to participate in, now might be the time to consider trying new virtual classes.

Are you stuck with your own Quarantine 15?

f you’re looking at a little more of yourself in the mirror since the start of the pandemic, you are not alone. Quite possibly what is staring back at you has been dubbed the “Quarantine 15,” an extra 15 or so pounds that so many people have added on since the pandemic hit.

To help you (and me!) shed those pounds and return to healthier eating, I spoke with Shore Medical Center Registered Dietitian Mackenzie McCune who shared some excellent advice.

How the pounds packed on quickly “Life abruptly changed in March and we all of sudden found ourselves changing habits, and not necessarily for the better,” said McCune. “With everything that occurred as a result of the pandemic-gyms closing and parks being off limits, all of a sudden people were spending a lot of time at home and going from an active to a rather sedentary lifestyle. Stress eating, coupled with a real fear of being exposed to the virus had many opting to take less trips to the grocery store and so they stocked up on food.” Social media was filled with novice bakers whipping up homemade breads and cakes. So much so according to Yale School of Medicine, yeast became a difficult commodity to find in the grocery stores.

McCune added that contributing to the weight gain is that many snack

foods are high in sodium and fat. While so many were hunkered down at home and those snacks were easily available, people’s habits began to change, explained McCune. “That abrupt change of lifestyle can contribute to a significant weight gain in a short period of time.”

The Consequences of Carrying Quarantine 15 Aside from pants that are suddenly snug in the waist, there are some consequences to adding on pounds. McCune said that the extra weight can put an extra strain on joints like hips and knees, increase blood pressure and can be especially troublesome to individuals who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes.

Insulin Resistance Someone who is insulin resistant will have a hard time losing weight and it could lead to further problems.

Insulin is very important to aid the body in functioning properly. McCune explained that insulin is a vital hormone that regulates blood sugar or glucose in the body. The food we consume is broken down into sugar.

That sugar enters the bloodstream and sends a message to the pancreas to release insulin. The insulin then acts like a key to let blood sugar into the cells for us to use as energy.

“When you put on that extra weight, fat forms around our cells, blocking receptors that are a lock which let in glucose to create energy for our bodies to work properly. This causes the insulin, which is like a key to that

lock to not to be able to fit in the receptor of the cell to let in glucose therefore causing insulin resistance,” said McCune. “Over time, different health complications may arise such as diabetes and neuropathy. Carrying extra weight, especially through the upper middle area and being inactive can put people at risk of being insulin resistant.”

Turning it Around While it might be easy to grab a bag of chips but with a little planning, it can be just as easy to grab some cut up raw vegetables or an apple.

“The best way to jump start a healthy diet and to cut out high fat snacks is to be prepared. Stop bringing cakes, cookies and desserts into the house.

Instead, have cut up vegetables and fruits on hand to grab and eat. Frozen fruits and veggies make great smoothies. They are filling, have a longer shelf life and are packed with immune boosting nutrients,” said McCune.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate “Sometimes we feel like we are hungry but what we really could just be is dehydrated. Drinking enough water helps to give you energy

throughout the day,” said McCune. Her tip when speaking with patients is to remind them to drink the equivalent of half their body weight, for example: if someone weighs 100 lbs. she suggests they drink 50 oz. of water each day.

Get Moving After a long period of not doing much exercise, McCune said it is best to start slow and keep building. The re-opening of gyms will be a big help. Start with walking 20 minutes after dinner and keep increasing the time and build up from there. Balanced diet, plenty of water, daily exercise and eight hours of sleep is a good Rx for that quarantine 15.

“Quick fix diets are not the best choice. Instead we need to train our body in a sustainable way for long term success. A healthy weight lost on average is 1-1.5 lbs. a week,” said McCune. “Stick with it and the weight will come off. It is important to maintain a healthy weight to avoid future health complications down the road.”

Doing the Salsa in Your Garden

any years ago, when my husband and I visited New Mexico, I fell in love with adobe fireplaces, blue doors, and colorful tiles.

But one thing that really lingered in my mind was the bowl of delicious green chili we ate at a little hole in the wall restaurant in Taos, New Mexico. It was such a new taste for me; something about the flavor was very unique. I now realize the special ingredient was tomatillo, which means “little tomato” in Spanish.

Though they look like little green tomatoes, tomatillos are something quite different. Tomatillos are less juicy than tomatoes and have a vibrant, tart taste. They are members of the nightshade family that include potatoes, peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes. Also known as Mexican husk tomatoes, tomatillos grow with their own little package. Once the flowers of the tomatillo plant are pollinated, a green pod forms, looking very much like a Chinese lantern flower. Inside

Attorney: OC will not get stuck with cleanup costs at former car dealership

A

s Ocean City continues to move toward acquiring a multimillion-dollar property on Simpson Avenue, city attorney Dottie McCrosson assured members of City Council that taxpayers would not get stuck with an unexpected expense in the form of cleanup costs if there is any soil contamination at the site.

“The administration has taken all necessary steps to ensure the site will have been remediated by the time that we acquire it,” she said, or if additional environmental remediation is required, that the city will have enough money in escrow to cover the cost.

McCrosson spoke at the most recent council meeting, discussing plans for the city to acquire a former car dealership property at 16th Street near the Ocean

City Community Center. The property includes much of the block. The city has sought to get hold of the land for years, with Mayor Jay Gillian stating he plans to use it for open space.

The owners, the Klause family, have announced plans to build single-family homes on the large property.

In 2018, a petition drive from the Fairness in Taxes organization challenged the ordinance funding a $9 million purchase of the property, scuttling the deal. Since then, the city has moved to acquire the land through eminent domain, a legal process that allows private land to be taken for public purposes, with the owner to be compensated at fair market value.

The most recent publicly discussed price for the land was $6.5 million, but according to McCrosson, the city and the owners are still in court, in the process of determining the final fair market value.

Her comments at the meeting were prompted by a recent letter to city officials from FIT President Dave Breeden, in which he raised concerns about the potential cleanup costs at the property. It

housed cars and car repairs for decades.

Breeden suggested the taxpayers could end up covering the cost of cleaning up the site.

McCrosson told council that the issue would be considered as part of the ongoing condemnation process. She said city officials received Breeden’s letter on Aug. 12, which included documents Breeden had requested from the city, and called his description of the history of the efforts “exactly accurate.”

“However, he reaches conclusions in there which, in my opinion, were not accurate,” she said.

According to McCrosson, it was clear that Breeden went to extensive lengths

in preparing the letter, and she wanted to respond in similar detail. At the meeting, she said she went into far greater detail than usual about an ongoing legal matter during a public meeting but believed it worth a more detailed explanation.

“I am not criticizing Mr. Breeden for drawing the wrong conclusion from the documents,” McCrosson said at the meeting. She described condemnation law as an extremely complex specialization, one that most lawyers rarely handle, which is why the city has hired an outside attorney to assist in the process.

Both the environmental investigation of the property, and the appraisal of its market value will need to be updated for the court, she said.

“We’re in a different real estate market today than we were 18 months ago.

So all of that is in the works,” she said.

During the public comment portion held later in the meeting, Breeden thanked McCrosson for the comprehensive review.

“She did it in a very diplomatic way, and at times was kind. She didn’t have to be,” he said

Breeden said his only reason for writing the letter was so that Ocean City taxpayers would not be on the hook for the cost of an environmental cleanup.

Part of the letter dealt with the lack of documents relating to a previous environmental investigation of the site.

According to McCrosson, that’s because the documents he requested were never in the city’s possession.

In part, that was because FIT’s petition campaign threw doubt over the city’s deal to buy the property, McCrosson continued, but also because the city would not have received the data collected by the environmental consultant, only the conclusions the consultant reached after evaluating that data.

“This letter could be construed as an accusation that the city is wrongfully withholding documents. I was tasked with producing documents that he requested, and I did spend a lot of time making sure that I produced all of the documents that the city is in possession of,” McCrosson said at the meeting. “Is it possible that I missed something? It’s always possible that I missed something.”

But there will need to be a new investigation of the property in any case.

A team visited the site the week before, with the permission of the owners, McCrosson said. The initial report looked good, she said.

“They didn’t see anything that caused alarm,” McCrosson said, but added that

the final report has not been completed.

The building that housed the car dealership, leaving a wide patch of dirt amid a paved parking area, and a chainlink fence that surrounded the land has been removed.

The property is flanked by public land, including a soccer field that was once the site of a supermarket to the north and the community center, which includes the library, Aquatic and Fitness Center and other public uses to the south. Usually busy, that parking lot was empty on a recent afternoon except for a couple borrowing items from the library under a curb-side pickup system.

“The city is anxious to pay the money to the court and take title to the property, because once we pay the money into court, we don’t have to await the final decision as to what’s fair and reasonable compensation to the property owner,” McCrosson told council. “This city will own the property and can begin plans to bring the open space that is planned for that site.”

But the city will not take that step until the environmental assessment is completed and the city can make a goodfaith request to put funds into escrow from the compensation amount to fund future cleanup, she said.

“We have a commonality of goal here.

There’s no reason that the administration would want the taxpayers to pay for this cleanup,” McCrosson said.

“Why can’t I recycle that?”

H

ave you ever wondered why some items are accepted in your curbside recycling bin while others are not? Why a plastic fork is not allowed but a plastic bottle is? There are many complex explanations that can be given, but here are three basic reasons items are deemed unacceptable: 1.The item may be inefficient or even dangerous to sort.

Items from your curbside recycling bin are brought to the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) in Egg Harbor Township to be sorted at ACUA’s Recycling Center by Republic Services, ACUA’s Recycling Partner.

All those bottles, cans, paper and cardboard are emptied from collection trucks onto the tipping floor and then moved to the processing area where items are first sorted by the hands of Republic’s employees. That’s why it’s crucial that dangerous items like needles and syringes never make their way into curbside bins.

Next, materials pass through a series of machines that were built specifically to sort items accepted by the ACUA’s single-stream program. When other items like plastic bags, batteries, hazardous chemicals or large pieces of metal make their way through the machines, they can cause costly breakdowns, or worse; starting fires or resulting in injuries to employees.

2. There is no market for the item.

Recycling markets help dictate the items that are accepted curbside. Without paper mills eager to accept used paper for reuse there would be no practical reason to collect paper in our recycling bins. Recycling markets are impacted by many things, from global economic changes to changes in consumer behavior. Think about how many people read the newspaper on their phone and how that might impact paper markets or how online shopping and delivery impacts the demand and availability for cardboard for boxes.

Many complex factors cause recycling markets fluctuate and change, but recycling is a long-term commitment that continues to benefit the environment and our communities. It’s important to understand what’s accepted in your local recycling program and to look for items that are made with recycled content. Purchasing products (and asking for them when you don’t see them) sends a strong message to encourage businesses to keep using recycled materials in their products.

3. The item diminishes the value of other recyclables.

Another reason an item may not be accepted is because it can contaminate other recyclables. For example, a plastic take-out container with food will contaminate news-

paper that’s in the same bin, making it unacceptable to paper mills. Pyrex, although made of glass, is treated with chemicals that make glass from bottles lose its value when mixed together.

Bottle caps and lids are often made from a different type of plastic than the bottle or container itself. Removing caps improves the quality of the bottles being processed. It’s helpful to remove caps and to place them in the trash, as very small items, like loose caps are difficult to sort and process. An added bonus; removing caps also reminds people to empty their containers before putting them in the recycling bin.

What You Should Never Recycle Now that you have some insight into why some items are deemed unacceptable, here is a reminder of those items that should NEVER be placed in your curbside recycling bin. ● Syringes or Needles – These pose significant health risks to workers on the sorting line. Medical waste should be disposed of properly at a medical facility.

Bags can be recycled through designated bins at grocery and department stores. Bags can be reused or repurposed at home as a trash can liner.

An even better option is to keep some reusable bags with you so you can avoid having to deal with single use plastic bags at all! ● Scrap Metal and Appliances – These items can be dangerous and are way too large for sorting equipment. Check with your local public works department for disposal information.

Electronics– Electronics contain harmful yet valuable materials. They are banned from both the trash and recycling bin and must be taken to a certified recycler.

See acua.com/electronics for additional information. ● Plastics that contained hazardous chemicals – Containers that held chemicals like motor oil or antifreeze are dangerous to employees and can cause fires. ● Food Waste – Food residue contaminates recyclables and diminishes their value. ● Styrofoam – Styrofoam is usually contaminated with food residue, and there is not a viable market for this material. ● Mirrors, light bulbs, vases, Pyrex, window glass, cups, dishware, shelving – These glass items have been treated with chemicals that make them different than glass bottles. Ocean City resident credited as a founder of Labor Day

resident Grover Cleveland signed a bill in 1894 designating the first Monday in September a federal holiday called Labor Day. It was to recognize the contribution that America’s workers have made to the growth and strength of the country. Leo Bamberger, an Ocean City summer resident, is credited with helping found this annual summer holiday.

“Bamberger Labor Day Story in 500 Newspapers Across Nation” was the front page headline in the September 25, 1958, in the Ocean City newspaper. The article began, “Ocean City earned a mention in close to 500 newspapers from coast to coast by virtue of having Leo Bamberger, of Philadelphia, as one of its summer residents."

In 1958, Mr. Bamberger, at age 90, was the last survivor of the group

of labor leaders who started the movement for the observance of Labor Day. His son, Henry Bamberger, assembled some factual material about his father, and made it available to the press just before Labor Day, reasoning that it would have timely news value. Even he was astonished

Eat Your Breakfast

any nutritionists teach the health benefits of eating breakfast. It improves your energy levels and ability to concentrate in the short term, and can help with better weight management, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in the long term.

Despite the benefits of breakfast for your health and wellbeing, many people often skip it, for a variety of reasons. The good news is there are plenty of ways to make it easier to fit breakfast into your day.

As we’ve heard our entire life, breakfast is often called "the most important meal of the day," and for good reason. As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. It replenishes your supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential nutrients required for good health. When you wake up from your overnight sleep, you may not have eaten for up to 10 hours. Breakfast replenishes the stores of energy and nutrients in your body.

The body’s energy source is glucose.

Glucose is broken down and absorbed from the carbohydrates you eat. The body stores most of its energy as fat. But your body also stores some glucose as glycogen, most of it in your liver, with smaller amounts in your muscles.

During times of fasting (not eating), such as overnight, the liver breaks down glycogen and releases it into your bloodstream as glucose to keep your blood sugar levels stable. This is especially important for your brain, which relies almost entirely on glucose for energy. In the morning, after you have

gone without food for as long as 12 hours, your glycogen stores are low. Once all of the energy from your glycogen stores is used up, your body starts to break down fatty acids to produce the energy it needs. But without carbohydrates, fatty acids are only partially oxidised, which can reduce your energy levels.

Eating breakfast boosts your energy levels and restores your glycogen levels ready to keep your metabolism up for the day.

Skipping breakfast may seem like a good way to reduce overall energy intake. But research shows that even with a higher intake of energy, breakfast eaters tend to be more physically active in the morning than those who don’t eat until later in the day.

Breakfast foods are rich in key nutrients such as folate, calcium iron, B vitamins and fiber. Breakfast provides a lot of your day’s total nutrient intake. In fact, people who eat breakfast are more likely to meet their recommended daily intakes of vitamins and minerals than people who don’t.

Essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients can only be gained from food, so even though your body can usually find enough energy to make it to the next meal, you still need to top up your vitamin and mineral levels to maintain health and vitality.

People who regularly eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight or obese. This is why I stress eating breakfast is essential for achieving weight loss goals and long term success. It is thought that eating breakfast may help you control your weight because it prevents large fluctuations in your blood glucose levels, helping you to control your appetite. Breakfast fills you up before you become really hungry, so you’re less likely to just grab whatever foods are nearby when hunger really strikes (for example high energy, high fat foods with added sugars or salt).

Boost your brainpower! If you don’t have breakfast, you might find you feel a

bit sluggish and struggle to focus on things.

This is because your brain hasn’t received the energy (glucose) it needs to get going.

Studies suggest that not having breakfast affects your mental performance, including your attention, ability to concentrate and memory. This can make some tasks feel harder than they normally would.

Children and adolescents who regularly eat breakfast also tend to perform better academically compared with those who skip breakfast. They also feel a greater level of connectedness with teachers and other adults at their school, which leads to further positive health and academic outcomes.

Eating a healthy breakfast may reduce the risk of illness. Compared with people who don’t have breakfast, those who regularly eat breakfast tend to have a lower risk of both obesity and type 2 diabetes. People who don’t have breakfast may be at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

This is one of the reasons my clients remain successful on their healthy eating plan. Clients who eat breakfast generally have more healthy diets overall, have better eating habits and are less likely to be hungry for snacks during the day than people who skip breakfast. Children who eat an inadequate breakfast are more likely to make poor food choices not only for the rest of the day, but also over the longer term. So remember, more is better. Eat your breakfast!

eptember is here! Which meansSHhore Local switches from a weekly to a bi-monthly publication. After this week, our next issue will hit the newsstand on September 17th, so “Happy Fall” everyone!

Of course, it’s not technically Fall yet, but plenty of folks have their minds on the return of the NFL in a few weeks for sure.

Since I last wrote, the entire pro sports scene took a break for social justice. The Flyers are on the brink of elimination against the New York Islanders in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Phillies have made a bunch of moves to bolster their bullpen.

They’ve also been on a bit of a winning streak as they are exactly at the halfway point of their 60-game season. The Eagles lost another key player to injury, and that is having a ripple effect on a veteran that has come back to the nest. The Sixers are still looking for a new head coach, but one star Sixer is bringing up the past on social media. Also in

basketball, a former Sixers great is mourning his college coach’s passing. Finally, on the local level, a prominent high school football coach has strong words for the Diocese of Camden.

From the entertainment world, everyone was shocked to see a young African American male star pass away,way too soon, from cancer. I attempted to watch something on Netflix that I wrote about last week and couldn’t get through it. However, Netflix dropped a “gift” into my lap to close out my summer right. Two words, Cobra Kai! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● After the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Bucks players decided they had seen enough and elected not to play their playoff game against the Orlando Magic last week. This set off a series of events where teams from all the sports eventually took a couple days off to shed light on the situation. The Phillies elected not to play their final game in Washington DC against the Nationals.

The Flyers and the NHL took two days off before resuming the Stanley Cup playoffs.

At one point, it appeared that the NBA might not return, but I’m glad they took a break and I’m glad they returned. I think the players of the major sports can do a lot more with microphones and cameras on them, than by not playing. That said, I completely understand why they took a few days off to call attention to racial injustice.

The Flyers were in an awkward situation as they were on the ice playing as the ripple effects of the Milwaukee postponement became clear. The Flyers lost that first game 4-0, but rebounded to win Game Two 4-3. However, they lost both ends of the back-to-back last Saturday & Sunday (3-1 & 3-2) to fall into a 3-1 series hole and just one loss away from elimination. In fact, by the time you read this, they may already be out.

What’s important to remember is that this is still a huge step forward for the Flyers.

No matter what, they won a playoff series for the first time in eight seasons. They were the hottest team when the pandemic hit and a team no one wanted to face in the bubble when things resumed. I’ve seen plenty of folks harping on Claude Giroux saying the team needs to trade him. Remember, Giroux has a “no trade” clause in his contract. He’s not going anywhere!

The big key missing for the Flyers is 3rd period play. In all three of their losses to the Islanders, the Flyers were either tied or trailed by a goal going into the 3rd period with a chance to win the game. In all three games, they blew that chance.

Backup Brian Elliott started Game 4 on Sunday night, but I don’t think the Flyers would’ve won even if it was Carter Hart in net. It wasn’t Elliott who pinched in the zone a few times and made mistakes that cost his team. (That was Matt Niskanen in case you were wondering) Giroux is getting a lot of criticism. Travis Konecny was scoreless through Game Four of the series. In the entire postseason, the Flyers power play is 4-for44 (9.1%) through four games with the Islanders and all that came before it. That’s not getting it done!

One bright spot was left winger Oskar Lindblom skating with the team in warmups the other night. Lindblom is trying to return to play after a long cancer battle, but you wonder if the Flyers will stay alive in the playoffs long enough for him to do so. Again, I know a lot of people are frustrated with the Orange & Black, but I think this season has been a success and if they don’t solve the Islanders, it just shows them places they need to improve.

Speaking of improvement, that’s exactly what GM Matt Klentak has done with the Phillies bullpen as I wrote last week about them adding David Hale from the Yankees, as well as veteran right-handers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree. Neither Hembree nor Workman have been “lights out” so far, but they are capable arms adjusting to their new team. Just prior to the trade deadline, Klentak added 33-year-old reliever David Phelps from the Milwaukee Brewers. Phelps played under Joe Girardi with the Yankees from 2012-14.

The addition of Phelps means the Phillies have added four relievers via trade in the last ten days. Workman, Hembree & Hale preceded him. Another reliever, Ranger Suarez, is expected to be added soon from satellite camp in Lehigh Valley. The bullpen needed fixing and Klentak has tried to address those issues.

The Phillies are exactly at the halfway point of the season now and they are 15-15 good enough for 2nd place in the NL East. In this revamped format where the top two teams from each division make the playoffs, and there are more wildcards, the Phillies would be IN the postseason as of the writing of this column. They’ve won six of their last seven, and a big reason why is Rhys Hoskins. He ripped a two-run double Monday night to go along with a first-inning homer to continue a torrid stretch. Hoskins is hitting

.319 with 13 RBIs over his last 13 games and has homered in three straight games.

Keep in mind that Hoskins had just one RBI and three extra-base hits through the first 14 games. If he’s heating up, the Phils don’t have to depend on JT Realmuto or Bryce Harper every single game.

Since I brought up Realmuto, there was a development where Klentak said the team has spoken to his agent since the start of summer camp, but declined to say if an offer had been made. Realmuto is only under contract for 30 more games now, while Sixto Sanchez, the pitcher the Phillies sent to Miami for him, has struck out 14 in his first 12 major league innings.

All signs point to the Phillies waiting until the offseason to truly gauge the cost of a free agent after a season with no fans.

That said, Realmuto entered last Monday’s game against the Nationals with 25 RBIs and a .902 OPS. It’s hard to imagine he won’t top the $23 million that Joe Mauer got from the Twins in 2010, the record for a catcher.

The big news out of the Eagles camp since last week is that left tackle Andre Dillard has a torn biceps and will miss the season. That’s huge news because the Eagles saw him as their future at that position. They did bring back Jason Peters, but to play right guard. Peters has since come out and said if they want him to play left tackle, he wants more money. This hasn’t sit well with some fans who watched Peters earn $100 million as

an Eagle since 2009. Given the fact that Matt Pryor is penciled in there now, and all 148 of his NFL snaps have come at right guard, I’d expect that the Birds will come to some sort of agreement with Peters.

The other significant news is that Carson Wentz sat out a practice at Lincoln Financial Field with a “soft-tissue injury”.

Anyone who follows the Birds knows that the words “injury” and “Wentz” in the same sentence are going to be met with concern by the Eagles fans. They also are missing rookie WR Jalen Reagor, who had been opening eyes as a speedy wideout and kick returner. Reagor has a small shoulder tear after falling awkwardly at that Sunday practice at the Linc. No surgery is needed, but he should miss about four weeks, so we won’t see him for the opener.

My last item on the Eagles is about the fans, as the team formally announced that “due to the ongoing health crisis, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and City of Philadelphia have communicated

to us that hosting fans at the stadium will not be permitted until further notice.” Team owner Jeffrey Lurie remains optimistic that fans will be able to return later in the season though, saying “Initially there’s not going to be fans at our games. We have been trying very, very hard to come up with solutions that are safe and innovative in time for the start of the season,” Lurie said. “And we’ve had a lot of really creative and instructive conversations with the state and the city, and that continues on a daily and weekly basis. We are hopeful there’s going to be real ways of having significant fans in our stadium pretty soon. Maybe not for September, but after that, and we’re looking at innovative ways of testing, with rapid testing, with point-of-care testing, with home testing. There’s a lot of ways to approach this. We’ve been incredibly proactive, working with companies around the planet to see what they’re up to and whether we can implement testing procedures.”

Sixers center Joel Embiid got some attention last Monday night when he tweeted a pair of eyeballs along with a short video clip of Jimmy Butler leading the Miami Heat past the Milwaukee Bucks. John Thompson Jr. My last sports item is about St. Joseph Football as the Wildcats will have a season after rebranding themselves St. Joseph Academy. But Paul Sacco, the winningest high school football coach in South Jersey history, has some stinging words for the Diocese of Camden writing they are “evil, evil, evil” in a letter to the news media, and calling them “malicious

and vindictive” in their effort to close St. Joseph High School in Hammonton.

The Diocese says “Schools close for one reason, declining enrollment”. The new St. Joe Academy will operate out of the old Vine Street location in a building leased from the Hammonton Board of Education. Sacco wrote that the athletic fields on Wood Street, the football team’s former home, are now “overgrown with weeds” and that the diocese has refused to allow the new school to use the gym at the now-empty elementary school on Third Street. “Why can’t the new school rent it?” Sacco wrote. “Why can’t it use it? If the building is sold, that’s different.

But it’s sitting empty. Why not let the children play? Evil, Evil, Evil.”

I’ll close with three items from entertainment as the industry was rocked by the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman last Sunday night. Boseman died at just age 43 after bravely fighting colon cancer for the past four years. Ironically, he passed away on the day that major league baseball was honoring Jackie Robinson, as Boseman played Robinson in the movie “42”. Boseman had not spoken publicly about his cancer fight, which made the news all the more shocking. He will forever be remembered for his role in “Black Panther”, and he also portrayed future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 2007’s “Marshall”. To me, the fact that he fought the cancer so bravely, while continuing to crank out great

movies, is a testament to his strength and courage. No doubt he will be missed!

I tried to cue up “Fear City: New York vs The Mafia” on Netflix but have to admit I fell asleep watching it. I guess hearing from the FBI and government agents who investigated the mob isn’t as compelling as hearing from the actual mobsters themselves! Maybe I’ll take another swing at this down the road, but falling asleep pretty much sums up what I thought of the first episode.

Lastly, I wrote on social media that “Cobra Kai on Netflix is the summer gift I didn’t know I wanted, but so sorely needed!” If you’re a fan of the 1984 movie “The Karate Kid”, make sure you check out this relatively new series on Netflix.

It was originally released on YouTube Premium in 2018, but now it’s on Netflix and getting a lot more attention. Set 34 years after the original Karate Kid film, it re-examines the narrative from the perspective of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). With Zabka and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) both reprising their roles from the 1984 film, I binge watched the

first two seasons so fast, I was left wanting more! Macchio has said he wanted to make sure the Mr. Miyagi character was still an integral part of the franchise, and they use old clips and pictures of the late Pat Morita as Miyagi in the series. I can’t say enough good things about this and highly recommend you watch it. I guess it’s true, Cobra Kai will never die!

Hey, please don’t forget to wear your mask when you’re out in public and interacting with others. I saw someone post on social media about how it doesn’t cost anything to be kind to others. I couldn’t agree more. Be kind, wear your mask, and be patient. We can all knock down this COVID-19 together!

Island Aqua Park offers fun in the Bay

ave you been to the new inflatable water park in Margate? If you haven’t, go. If you have, you probably already have plans to go back.

This family-owned business is in full swing for their first season in Margate. From 10 am to 5 pm, kids and adults of all ages can bounce, jump, swing, slide, and splash their way to fun seven days a week.

I recently visited the new attraction, which sits in the Bay at 9501 Amherst Avenue, on a weekday during what I thought would be an “off-peak” hour. I quickly learned ”off-peak” did not exist at Margate’s Island Aqua Park. There was family fun being had all around me, and it remained steady throughout the day.

The Tice family owns another inflatable water park in Stone Harbor, which is nearing its 30th year in business. “The first location was created in Stone Harbor, and opened in 1988”, Said Tim Tice, one of the co-owners.

“In addition to the aqua park, at that location, we also rent wave runners, ski boats, kayaks, and paddleboards,” Tice added.

Reach and Fetch Rescue in EHC partners with Animal Aid non-profit Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

T

here are an estimated 70 million homeless animals in the United States and only 6 to 8 million enter the nation’s shelter every year. The rest are either left to fend for themselves on the streets or left to die.

One charity that is doing a remarkable job rescuing and rehoming these animals is Animal Aid USA. Founded in 2012 and originally based in Georgia, they operate in numerous states on the East Coast, including New Jersey. Their mission statement is, “By providing the education, awareness and resources, We are empowering people (especially children) to make change in their world for animals” which encapsulates their viewpoint on animal rescue perfectly.

Their unique rescue and relocation model utilizes the entirely volunteer-based organization to rescue animals from high kill-shelters and relocate them to loving homes. Once the animal has been rescued from inevitable euthanasia, Animal Aid provides all medical requirements including vaccinations,

spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.

Once the animal is healthy and ready for adoption, they are transferred to one of the numerous receiving rescues or sometimes the animal is lucky enough to have already been adopted privately.

Animal Aid USA has partnered with various animal rescue centers on the East Coast including Reach and Fetch in Egg Harbor City (“Reach and Fetch Rescue” on Facebook). Animal Aid USA saves an astonishing 300 dogs each month and to date, have rescued and provided veterinary care to over 31,000 animals.

Animal Aid USA’s one-of-a-kind rescue and relocation model, which they have been operating since 2011, is per-

haps what makes their organization so successful when it comes to saving animals. Rescue/ relocation and partnering information representative, Karen Talbot, explains the process, “We have partners who have brick and mortar adoption facilities as well as partners who work through foster homes. They receive all their vetting in GA under our team of amazing veterinarians. Once selected by our rescue partners, our vets do a health certification to enable them to cross state lines and come up with us on transport.

monthly travel to Georgia every 28 days to then pick them up and transport them back to their receiving rescue partners who then adopt them out (after a quarantine period) and our partners earn the adoption fee.” Their commitment does not stop there though, Animal Aid USA consistently follows up on the welfare of the pet, moving them between rescue facilities if necessary. “An example would be, if a dog goes to a kennel like environment and doesn't acclimate well and would do better in a foster home situation, we then correspond with our partners and make the switch and vice versa”, Talbot explains.

Animal Aid believes in the “adopt, don’t shop” principle when it comes to getting a new pet for your home. Talbot said, “Millions of innocent companion animals are executed in animal shelters across the country every year due to space, lack of resources, or adopters.”

cific breed. I, having rescued 2 purebred Pomeranians, know that you can get the perfect purebred dog through rescue.

Will it take some time and research to find your perfect pup, maybe, but will the effort be worth it, absolutely! Talbot says “There are purebred dogs in several shelters, so the excuse to buy from a breeder is just that, an excuse. Why would you buy when a shelter animal would die? We do not advocate buying puppies. We firmly believe in Adopt don’t shop!” However, if you insist on buying a dog, Talbot has one plea for you, “If you must purchase a puppy, please at least research a breeder who has both parents on site and allows you to meet both parents.”

Like any charity, they are faced with challenges, on top of the high-pressure task of rescuing animals from being killed. “Since we are 100% volunteer based and we earn none of the adoption fees, we get no reimbursement for fuel, vetting costs, transport costs, health certifications, or medical emergencies.

Our biggest challenge is raising the funds to keep supporting this mission since we do not make any money nor get reimbursement for what we put out” explains Talbot. They are also always looking for people to get involved in helping with tasks such as picking up donations, organizing donation drives for supplies, or even going on a rescue mission to rural Georgia to save lives.

This is simply the most incredible feeling. Pets are simple creatures; they are just longing for their forever home with a loving family. Adopting a rescue may just be one of the best decisions you make as you bring love into their life, and love into your home.

Late Summer Streaming Movies Need to Kill Some Time? These Films Won’t Waste It Uncut Gems

t’s the end of summer and in many parts of the country it’s as hot as blazes outside.

Because of an abundance of caution (or an overabundance, depending on your perspective) there still isn’t a whole lot to do at night.

You can get something to eat outdoors or have a barbeque or maybe take in a swim, but after a couple of hours we invariably have to head home. And home is where the big screen is.

There have been some advances in entertainment offerings on TV, most notably the return of professional sports but forgive me for saying this – sports without a “live studio audience” just lacks the intensity it used to, it feels like I’m watching a high school practice with just the coaches and a couple of parents. Not a lot of drama. The canned background “white noise” during the games can actually be annoying.

That leaves streaming movies and series to soak up the time. Here are some film recommendations to get you through the next few weeks:

★★★★ Adam Sandler inhabits the body and soul of a heavily messed-up New York Jewish diamond merchant and compulsive sports gambler named Howard Ratner. There’s no part of his life that isn’t a rolling train wreck.

He owes a fortune to his brother-inlaw who happens to also be a loan shark. His marriage is cratering while he carries on an affair with one of his employees. He smuggles a giant gemstone from an Ethiopian mine into the US which he hopes will be the big ticket (once sold) that will solve all of his financial problems. He’s essentially playing roulette and putting all his chips on one number.

Adam Sandler and Julia Fox in “Uncut Gems” The pace is frantic, antic and manic all at the same time. Sandler is so believable and impressive in this role that

he carries the film single-handedly, Sandler won Best Actor at the National Board of Review and the film won Best Screenplay and rated one of the Ten Best of 2019 from the National Board, also Best Director from the New York Film Critics Circle, all in January 2020.

It didn’t rate with the Golden Globes or Academy Awards though. Be prepared for a whirlwind ride, you won’t want to pause this film because there is no natural stopping point from beginning to end. “Uncut Gems” also features Julia Fox, Indina Menzel, Eric Bagosian, Judd Hirsch and even basketball great Kevin Garnett playing himself.

Other great seedy gambling flicks include Casino (★★★★★, 1995) starring Robert DiNiro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone and the late Don Rickles, directed by the incomparable Martin Scorsese, this is one of the 10 must-see films of the last 40 years. The Hustler (★★★★★, 1961) stars Paul Newman as a pool shark and George C. Scott as his sometime sponsor, manager and enabler along with Jackie Gleason in an outstanding performance as Minnesota Fats.

The contrast between the roles of Hitler’s young secretary and that of Winston Churchill, Elizabeth Layton (played by Lily James in 2017’s Darkest Hour, ★★★★★) is about as black and white as you can get. Both movies are set in bunkers in desperate times but we see that in Nazi Germany no one questioned the madness and no one opposed it and no one revolted against it, there being a complete absence of conscience beneath Berlin. The whole gang of Nazis are on hand, Goebbels, Speer, Himmler and Eva Braun played with magisterial nihilism by Juliane Köhler. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for Best Foreign Film.

Granz won the London Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor Another great claustrophobic film in German about the German experience in World War II is the original Das Boot (“The Boat” ★★★★★, 1981), Wolfgang Petersen’s riveting drama about the crew of a U-Boat patrolling in the North Atlantic towards the end of the war. Petersen was nominated for Best Director in 1983’s Academy Awards.

Downfall

★★★★ The perennially and preternaturally young Keanu Reeves returns for the third installment in his “John Wick” action thriller series. In case you’ve missed this one and the prior two iterations (“John Wick,” ★★★★, 2014 and “John Wick, Chapter 2,” ★★★★, 2017) this is the story of a man who only wants to be left alone.

★★★★ Dark, macabre and disturbing is the only way to describe this dramatization of the last two months of Berlin before it fell to the Russians in World War II. The action mainly takes place in the stiflingly claustrophobic Führerbunker, beneath the Reichs Chancellery. The movie is in German with English subtitles and its very total German-ness gives it serious verisimilitude. Shot on location in Berlin, Munich and St. Petersburg the cinematographers manage to realistically recreate a world gone mad and a city reduced to rubble.

Hitler is played chillingly by Bruno Ganz and Junge by Alexandra Maria Lara.

Wick wants to retire from being the world’s foremost hitman but despite his protestations gets continually dragged back into the fray – principally to defend himself, his dog and his car from the depredations of nefarious bad guys populating an international syndicate of death for hire, a modern-day Murder Incorporated if you will, but one with much more sophistication, panache, designer clothes and its own code of honor. That Reeves is the good guy (even though he was an assassin himself) amidst all the psychotic evil is what gives the films something of a moral backbone.

abor Day will soon be upon us and as a Local, I would have to say that in some ways, I look forward to it.

Crossing the Ventnor boardwalk will not seem like a real life version of Frogger, beaches and restaurants will be less crowded and there is the promise of cooler weather ahead. It is truly a great time to be a Local at the shore. This year, however, another date looms significantly on my horizon; November 3rd, Election Day. On a local level, I am disappointed in the behavior I have seen from people in our area. I partially blame myself because one of the vehicles used to spread the vitriolic statements is Facebook through my “friends” and I have paid way too much attention to it. I have since remedied that by reducing my participation. I have no problem with friends touting their support for their candidate whomever they may be or even bashing the candidate they are against. The same has been done by me. I even enjoy a little spirited repartee occasionally but I respect their position and their right to voice it to me. But what has put me off is when these individuals personally attack the candidate’s supporter’s intelligence, patriotism or character. It is here, for me that the line has been crossed. A couple weeks ago, I was riding my bike on the Ventnor boardwalk when I saw an 80 year old man sitting at a pavilion with sign on his bike which read “9800 soldiers died on D-Day, June 4, 1944.” I hold all veterans in high regard, so I stopped and engaged him in conversation. At one

point, I asked him how does he think the Greatest Generation would feel about what is happening in our country right now? He simply responded, “this is a different time” at which point a woman who I had not taken notice of, yells at us, “We have to stop cops from killing Americans. Americans have to stop killing Americans!” I have no argument with that but I turned to her and firmly told her we were having a private conversation and she had no right disrespecting our privacy. She repeated herself louder and I told her in no uncertain terms to move along which she begrudgingly did. Our son just told us that a Trump flag in his neighborhood was defaced with an incendiary word spray painted on it. Whether it is a Trump flag or a Biden flag, neither of them should be defaced. It took a person to trespass on another person’s land and vandalize their property, a criminal act at the very least and a potentially dangerous one, to express their displeasure at the neighbor’s political position. Any sense of decency is quickly eroding and those responsible are quick to place the blame anywhere but on themselves. It is my belief, that after the November 3rd election, the friendships and relationships that were already bruised, will be beyond repair regardless of which candidate wins.

But if it is their candidate who emerges victorious, any thoughts of reconciliation by them would be in vane since it became vividly apparent where their priorities lie. At least before November 3rd, south Jersey can offer her best to us, i.e. cooler temps, a warm ocean and uncrowded beaches.

In a nutshell, there is a $14 million contract out on Reeves because in his quest for vengeance in Wick 2 he violated one of the cardinal rules of the death syndicate. This sets-up a worldwide competition among the very crème de la crème of murderers and assassins to collect this hefty bounty. The thing about John Wick is that he may get battered, he may get bruised, but he can’t be killed, probably because the franchise to far too lucrative.

In his quest for survival, Wick engages in some of the best choreographed cinematic martial arts violence ever filmed. He makes Bruce Lee seem like an amateur. It’s impossible to keep track of the body count but somehow the violence is integral, not gratuitous. Joining the cast of Wick 3 are Halle Berry, who proves she is still red hot at 54 and Laurence Fishburne who always lends gravitas to the improbable.

Fishbourne is reunited with Reeves here. They worked together on The Matrix trilogy (★★★★★, 1999, 2003) and you won’t be disappointed by this reunion. Rounding out the cast are the luminescent Anjelica Huston as a Russian Mafia matriarch and Ian McShane as the ever-so-dapper head of the New York branch the “High Table,” which runs international iniquity. Great sets, locations and cinematography as befits a big-budget action thriller. No awards here other than the raves demonstrated by the $326 million garnered at the box office.

Peppermint ★★★1/2 If after John Wick you’ve not had enough of vengeance and martial arts, you may want to take a female turn on the genre. Jennifer Garner (who also played the Marvel superhero Electra ★★★★, 2005) is now 48 and clearly drinks from the same fountain of youth as Halle Berry.

The justice system is owned by the Cartel so the killers go free. Garner goes underground for a few years and transforms herself from a housewife into a ruthless crusader for revenge, cutting a swath of blood through legions of miscreants along with the men who murdered her family. Wrongful corruption in the police and courts is rectified at Garner’s hands. This is a modern-day Death Wish (★★★★, 1974) from the female perspective. Garner is much better looking than the late Charles Bronson and possesses martial arts skills that Bronson could only dream of, but the theme is the same, murder avenged, apathetic or corrupt cops circumvented and justice done.

Garner carries this movie entirely.

If you’re looking for standout performances from costars, you won’t find it here, but worth the quick 102 minutes.

Atlantic Christian Scout Troop 389 Receives Bass Pro/Cabela’s Grant For New Camping Equipment

oy Scout Troop 389, chartered by Atlantic Christian School in Egg Harbor Township, recently received a grant from the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund for new camping equipment, just in time for the Troop’s August 21-22 outing to Treasure Island on the Delaware River.

“Our Troop has been steadily growing and our Scouts love to camp and go backpacking so this new equipment was exactly what we needed,” said Scoutmaster Mike Jorgenson. “It was in God’s perfect timing that we received this equipment right when we needed it.”

The grant provided $1,800 worth of camping equipment, including eight Ascend Orion 3 three-person tents, one Bass Pro 3 burner high output propane stove, two cast iron camp ovens, and two five-piece cast iron cookware sets.

Several scouts and Troop leaders picked up the new equipment at the Bass Pro Shop in Atlantic City on July 31, where they met with Megan Werber, the store’s general manager.

Jorgenson said the Scouts had the opportunity to get trained on how to set up the tents and other equipment during Scout meetings prior to their August 21-22 camping trip, where the tents, stove, and cookware were all put to good use.

I

feel strongly that the Civil War had the greatest effect on our monetary system ever, from validating paper money by requiring banks to obtain a Federal charter and adhere to their requirements in order to issue paper money and issuing paper money explicitly backed by gold and silver, to changes in the size, metallic content and issuance of new denomination of coins. The two-cent coin I wrote about last week is an example of a new denomination, and the change in our one cent coin from containing 88% copper and 12% nickel to 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin is another.

Well, the elimination of nickel in the one cent coin did not go over well with the nickel mine owners, who were vocal about lost revenue and job losses to their elected officials (some things never change). The result of their lobbying was the creation of 2 new coins, a three-cent coin and a different five cent coin.

The three-cent coin was not a new denomination but was different in metallic composition. The three-cent coin was first struck in 1851 in part due to the rate to mail a letter dropped to three cents and was the first coin not to contain its’ value in a precious metal. Instead of being 90% silver like the other silver coins, it contained only 75% silver. This was to discourage hoarding and melting of silver coins going on at the time due to the fact the value of the silver content in the other coins exceeded the face value, a problem inherent when a coin is made with a precious metal whose price fluctuates. This was finally addressed by the United States Mint in 1964 and 1970 when the mint stopped using silver in circulating coinage.

Getting back to the new three cent coin, it was first struck in 1865 near the end of the Civil War and was a replacement for the silver three cent silver coin, which was also being hoarded along with the higher denomination coinage.

The new coin contained 25% nickel, putting the mint back in the business of buying nickel, and 75% copper, resulting in a grayish color to the coin. Mintage figures were in the millions until 1871 when they slowly declined to 1876 after which from 1877 to 1879 they were struck in proof condition only for collectors. In 1880 circulation strike coins were minted along with proof issues and

Because of the extremely low mintage figures for the years in the 1880’s, for collectors, this is a difficult and expensive set to complete.

The next coin to debut was the fivecent coin in 1866, also containing 25% nickel and 75% copper (those mine owners must have twisted the politicians’ arms, or wallets). There was currently a coin worth five cents, it was a silver half dime which contained half the silver as a dime and was also hoarded. This new coin ultimately replaced the half dime permanently by 1873 and, unlike the two and three cent coins, is still in production and use today.

An interesting result of the silver half dime and the nickel five cent coin circulating together was that people would refer to the five cent coin as that nickel coin, abbreviated to that nickel, which it is still referred to today, not a five cent coin.

Atlantic City’s African American Residents’ Low Census Response Rate

ith less than two months until the end of the 2020 Census count, the latest response rate among African Americans in Atlantic City is falling behind, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. There is mounting pressure to get more people from the community to get counted.

Every ten years America completes a census to count how many people live in America. We are currently in the middle of a census year. The next census will not be taken until 2030.

According to 2020 Census Contact, Lisa Moore, “community leaders and Census partners have done a great job promoting the message that completing the 2020 Census is safe, easy, and important.

Currently, Hunterdon County leads the state of New Jersey with a rate of 74 percent.”

According to www.2020Census. gov, the overall rate of response for NJ is about 64.9% and the rate of completed census information for

Atlantic City is only 41.3 %. As of August 5, the response rate in Atlantic City was 35.4 percent, about 4.2 percent lower than in the 2010 final count. The coronavirus pandemic, which shut down casinos and other businesses, as well as the looming presidential elections, compound the undercount problem in the Black community.

Considering that the news is always talking about Covid-19 or the 2020 Presidential race, it is easy to understand why Atlantic City may be lagging behind in responding to the 2020 Census.

Atlantic City, like every other city in America, has been battling the Covid-19 pandemic this year.

Atlantic City’s major employers, the casinos, were shut down in March, April and May. Casino workers, from groundskeepers and housekeeping to dealers and security guards, all found themselves needing to figure out how to make rent. Most of the city’s

inhabitants had to figure out how to keep their lights on and make insurance payments, as well as homeschool their children.

Black people were not the only ones struggling, but were more likely to suffer economically and also more likely to have a relative as a frontline worker in a hospital.

The Black community of Atlantic City is far behind in completing The 2020 Census. Black communities, however, across the United States have been undercounted for decades, affecting federal funding allocations to programs that serve them.

According to Census 2020 contact Peter Chen, roughly “2 million children under the age of 5 were not counted in the last census. This directly impacts funding for schools and libraries.”

The U.S. Government, specifically the department that handles The Census, has been sponsoring more advertising and community buy-in than ever to try and get a complete and accurate count this year. More money than ever has been spent to get the Black community and Atlantic City counted.

The good news is that The Census 2020 is not over. Black and Brown people need to make sure everyone in their household is counted. Please make contact today by phone or online. If an enumerator comes to your home, please answer. They may need to follow up. They will have an official Census 2020 badge and I.D. They cannot ask you about warrants, any

social security information, or immigration status. Enumerators can be placed in jail if any of your information is shared with anyone, including other government offices.

Atlantic City and other shore areas often have properties owned by people that live outside the city and state. 2020 Census Contact Ahmed Butt advises to “count yourself at the residence that you live at most of the time. If that time is split evenly, count yourself where you were staying on April 1st, 2020.”
