Keeping Cool From the Editor

W

hew! This summer has been a sizzler. As I write this we are well into our 5th heatwave. This week Bob and I discovered a new way to cool off while enjoying a favorite cocktail at the newly opened Sky Garden Grille at Ocean Resort Casino. It's called a "Poptail" because each of their signature drinks comes with a lucious and delicately melted popsicle in it, creating a frothy yummy foam on the top. We indulged in these frozen drinks, while celebrating our 27th anniversary last weekend. In my memory, popsicles are the essence of summer. When our children were growing up, they loved the lemon and strawberry fruit bars on a hot day. I can still envision the three of them standing near their two foot kiddie pool, with melting popsicles in hand. When I was a kid, kool pops were

all the rage. Available in a variety of flavors, they came in a plastic tube that you would push up from the bottom. My mom always had them in the freezer and I remembered getting them at the community pool snack bar too. Ice cream is another fantastic cool treat. Luckily,( or not so luckily) we live only two blocks from our favorite ice cream stand. I also enjoy slushy water ice, especially cherry, as a summer treat. On a healthier note, Jersey tomatoes are in full splendor. Check out Marci Lutsky's article on how to fully enjoy them along with recipes on page 14 -15. Nancy Adler writes about the power of a smile on our health on page 18. And if you need some motivation to dive into water sports, check out Bonnie Miller's "Exercise benefits to paddleboarding and kayaking," on page 12. Outdoor concerts and movies are happening. Be sure to look at Events on page 8 for a full listing. Also check out the listing of all the area's farmer's markets, a great place to get those Jersey tomatoes! Until next time, stay cool and stay local.

Sharks in the Water: Fact vs. Fiction By Steffen Klenk

n July 27th, a great white shark named Miss May made headlines after being pinged or tracked, just 50 miles off the coast of Atlantic City. Miss May, along with seven other great white sharks, were recently also spotted off the coast of Cape Code, Masachusetts, prompting officials to close all beaches in the area last week. Hearing about sharks can instantly ruin the most perfect beach day. But do we have anything to worry about? One of the most documented and infamous shark attacks in New Jersey was recorded in July 1916. In less than two weeks, four people were killed, each in separate shark attacks from Beach Haven to Manalapan. The incidents caused nationwide panic, deterring visitors from the Jersey Shore and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in tourism money. On July 14th, 1916, Michael Schleisser, a taxidermist and Barnum and Bailey employee, caught a 7.5 foot long great white shark along the Rar-

Take In the Great Outdoors in Somers Point By Steffen Klenk

I

f you are looking for ways to get outside, to spend time with friends and loved ones, the City of Somers Point offers plenty with open spaces, parks, and walking paths. Located ½ mile from the 9th Street Bridge, Kennedy Park is a great place for a stroll. Overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay, this family-friendly destination has a large playground area for children, gazebo, benches and plenty of picnic tables. Bring a blanket and basket of food for your very own picnic under the trees, or kick back along a park bench and watch as colorful boats float along the water. Personal tip: get up early to capture one of the most amazing sunrises anywhere in our region. Did you know that Somers Point has its own beach? Located just off of Bay Avenue, across from Gateway

Playhouse, the William Morrow Municipal Beach offers unparalleled bay front view of Ocean City is a great spot to relax, with its children’s playground, fishing pier and picnic tables. There are several eateries close by

that offer a great variety of meals and snacks to add to your picnic. It is open daily from 10am5pm and is protected by a lifeguard. Going for a bike ride can improve your mental health, weight loss and can decrease your risk of heart disease. Somers Point offers one of the best bike paths in all of South Jersey. The trail was once part of a railroad system known as the Shore Fast Line, connecting travelers in and out of Atlantic City. The service was in operation until 1946. During the 1970’s, the rail lines were removed and the trail was converted into a walking path. Originally used from Somers Point to the southern half of Linwood, the bike trail was extended into Northfield during the 2000’s. Today, the bike path runs 6.5 miles from New Jersey Avenue north to Pleasantville. There are several small business along the path, such as Jessie’s of Linwood. This former general store located at Popular Avenue was recently converted into an ice cream, bakery and coffee shop. There is so much beauty to ex-

plore throughout the city of Somers Point. I hope you get a chance to go outside and enjoy the beauty that this astounding shore town has to offer. Exercise benefits of SUP, Kayaking and canoeing Shore Fit By Bonnie Miller

I

’ll start with Stand up paddle boarding because it is an amazing low-impact exercise that combines balance, strength, and endurance. Stand up paddle boarding utilizes your core, back, arms, and leg muscles for a full body workout. It also allows you to enjoy the tranquil experience of being on the water. No matter how old you are or what your fitness level is, paddle boarding is simple to learn and can help you get in the best shape of your life. Not only do you burn a ton of calories, it also gets you outdoors and calms your spirit which is so great for your mental health too. Paddle boarding can burn more calories in an hour than other sports because it incorporates all the key elements of a full body workout. You are guaranteed to get a solid workout. It may look easy to bystanders but it definitely is not. Because it’s an all-body workout, almost every muscle in your

body is used when paddle boarding. Your core, back and leg muscles are constantly maintaining balance, while your arms, back and shoulders are engaged when propelling your paddle board through the water. Just breathing in the salt air and being on the water by yourself can be enough to get rid of any negative energy. It’s such a nice escape even if

it’s only for a couple of hours. There’s also a common misconception about boosting your endurance and stamina. Endurance and stamina are not built solely through cardio exercise, but are also built through strengthening exercises. Luckily, paddle boarding is not only a cardio exercise, but also builds strength in your upper body, core and legs. When your

heart beats faster and releases nitric oxide, your blood vessels will open and increased oxygen will approach your brain, improving the function of nearly every organ in your body. Paddle boarding is similar to cross-training, running, and aerobics, all which greatly improve cardiovascular health and reduce your risk of diseases. In a previous article, we discussed the importance of balance training and there’s no better way than Stand Up Paddleboarding to achieve that. In order for you to successfully paddle board, you need to stand upright on your board while floating on water. The act of balancing on a paddle board will increase your core and leg strength. Paddle boarding will not only help improve your balance, but can potentially also improve your focus on the day-to-day activities of your life. There’s so much more to paddle boarding than just doing the activity. Not only is it fun, but it’s a whole experience for your body to enjoy. So, what are you waiting for? It's the season for it and there are so many SUP rental businesses. You can also purchase inflatable boards if

you don’t have the space to store one. Give it a try and my rule of thumb is to do something at least three times before you make a decision as to whether or not you like it. Kayaking and canoeing are another favorite form of outdoor exercise. Our family has 5 kayaks and we frequent Lake Lenape all summer long. Cardiovascular fitness is the name of the game with kayaking especially if you’re flying solo. Increased muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest from moving the paddle. The strength to

AUGUST 13, 2020

power a canoe or kayak comes mainly from rotating the torso and applying pressure with your legs. As a result, you will develop increased torso and leg strength. An hour of kayaking through the waters can burn up to four hundred calories. It is a great strength workout but the added benefit is the aerobic exercise. Pick up the pace and elevate your heart rate to see cardio benefits. The faster you paddle the more heat you generate and that means a great calorie burn as you expend all that energy. Although the benefits of kayaking are more evident on your arms, shoulders, and upper back, it also has significant effects on your legs. Leg muscles are still used while you are kayaking. In fact, the movements involved with kayaking are just as impactful on the lower limbs as it is on the upper ones. While you kayak, your legs apply the needed pressure to keep you balanced on the kayak. Also, when you turn or maneuver, you unknowingly tighten and loosen the muscles in your leg countless times.

It’s a great leg workout without even realizing it! Your abdomen, obliques, and lower back are also engaged during this workout. In every stroke, as you reach forward, you will be contracting your abs, while as you pull, you contract your muscles on the lower back. When you make any twisting motion, you then engage your obliques. Also, the most effective way of keeping a kayak balanced while sitting on or in it is to sit upright. This keeps your core muscles slightly engaged throughout the activity. Whether you choose, Stand up paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing, the health benefits are similar and amazing. Being in the midst of nature is not just enjoyable but can also help with the mental health aspect and make you feel more positive in your day to day life. Since these are outdoor activities, the summer months are ideal. Aside from nature’s effect on your mood, aerobic exercises like these increase the release of certain chemicals such as endorphins

and serotonin in the brain. These neurotransmitters regulate mood and make you feel happier. Improved overall mental health and well being is attainable and so important, so get out there and enjoy the beauty of nature while getting a great workout! is the time. There are so many ways to enjoy tomatoes including eating them like an apple like my kids do. Find some local tomatoes immediately and give some of these ideas a try. My absolute favorite way to enjoy tomatoes is in caprese salad. Slice tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. If you visit one of the local farmers markets, find Tony Boloney’s food truck and buy sea salt mozzarella. Layer the tomatoes and mozzarella, top with fresh chopped basil, drizzle with olive oil and top with salt and pepper. I could seriously eat this for every meal. Okay, maybe not breakfast but definitely for lunch and dinner every day. Are you doing some outdoor entertaining this summer? Bruschetta is one of the easiest appetizers to prepare that your guests will love.

Chop tomatoes and add them to a bowl with chopped garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. Slice up some good bread like a baguette, rub each piece with garlic and top each slice with the tomato mixture. If you have fresh basil in your garden, chop some and add it on top. I recommend making a lot because this is always a crowd pleaser. Are you growing a variety of cherry tomatoes? You can’t go wrong with a pasta salad or panzanella salad. For pasta salad, add tomatoes and bocconcini (small mozzarella balls) to your favorite pasta that has been cooked and cooled. Top it with a basil vinaigrette, either store-bought or homemade. Equally good is panzanella salad which basically swaps out the pasta for toasted bread cubes. This is one of my favorite summer dishes.

Mozzarella Panzanella Salad When it comes to music, you know how there is always a summer hit that you can’t get out of your head? Consider this recipe for mozzarella panzanella salad your summer hit that you won’t be able to stop thinking about. Made with Stella mozzarella cheese, farm fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and rustic bread, it will be the side dish you want to make whenever you entertain this summer. As soon as we finished our first batch, I started thinking about when I could make it again. With the 4th of July coming up this week, it is the perfect recipe to round out your holiday menu.

Ingredients

▶6 cups day old rustic bread cut into 1 inch cubes ▶2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ▶1 teaspoon salt ▶2 cups chopped roma tomatoes ▶2 cups chopped cucumbers ▶8 oz Stella mozzarella cheese, cubed ▶6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ▶1 tablespoon dijon mustard ▶1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar ▶1 teaspoon chopped garlic ▶salt and pepper to taste ▶2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

on a parchment lined baking sheet and cook for 10 minutes. Let cool. Add tomatoes, cucumbers and mozzarella to a big bowl and set aside. Whisk together vinaigrette ingredients (remaining olive oil through pepper). Once bread cubes are cooled, add them to the bowl with cucumbers. Add vinaigrette and toss. Top with basil. Let sit for 30 minutes and then serve.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Toss bread cubes with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 teaspoon salt. Spread

Want to make this panzanella salad even better? Add some diced Jersey peaches. You’re welcome. If you have an abundance of tomatoes and don’t intend to eat them immediately, consider making tomato sauce to can or freeze for the winter. My favorite method for making tomato sauce is in the Instant Pot (I never miss an opportunity to profess my love for the Instant Pot). To the pot add 4 quartered tomatoes, 2 quartered onions, 2 carrots cut into large chunks, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 teaspoons dried oregano, 2 teaspoons dried basil, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Let that pressure cook for 20 minutes and release pressure for 10 minutes. Then add 6 oz of tomato pasta and stir it with an immersion blender. I promise this will be some of the easiest and most delicious tomato sauce that you can enjoy all winter long. Summer will be over before you know it and we will move on to talking about all things pumpkin. Take advantage of Jersey tomatoes while they are at their peak of perfection in some of these delicious recipes! Pasta Salad Perfect For A BBQ

I love entertaining in summer. There is something about firing up the grill and the sound of kids playing outside that just makes me want to invite people over. When I entertain I try to keep things as simple as possible by preparing easy dishes in advance so that when friends come over all we need to do is grill. One staple when I host a bbq is pasta salad. This recipe is very simple, fresh-tasting and always a crowd pleaser. The first thing you want to do is cook the pasta. I like gemelli in pasta salad but you can use whatever kind you want. For the last few minutes of pasta cooking, add some spinach to the boiling pot so that it wilts down. Making your own vinaigrette just takes a few minutes. For this recipe

I mix together lemon juice, olive oil, agave nectar, golden balsamic vinegar, shallot, salt and pepper. Easy, right? So you have your cooked pasta and vinaigrette, now you just need your add-ins. Mezzetta deli-sliced roasted bell peppers work great in this recipe. They are delicious and save so much time since you don’t have to roast or cook the peppers yourself. Another favorite are bocconcini, bite-sized mozzarella cheeses. These are also a time-saver since you don’t have to cut up the cheese and they are the perfect size. Toss together the pasta with spinach, roasted peppers, bocconcini and vinaigrette and you have yourself the perfect pasta salad. Next time you entertain, spend time preparing before your guests arrive so that you can enjoy their company. No one wants to be stuck in the kitchen! Make sure to enter the Mezzetta Bold, Bright Summer Giveaway for a chance to win a Weber grill, grill tools, Mezzetta peppers and a summer entertaining kit!

Ingredients ▶1 lb pasta, gemelli or your pasta of choice

▶5 oz fresh spinach ▶1/4 cup fresh lemon juice ▶1/4 cup olive oil ▶1 tablespoon chopped shallot ▶1 tablespoon agave nectar ▶1 tablespoon golden balsamic vinegar ▶salt and pepper to taste ▶12 oz jar Mezzetta Deli-Sliced Roasted Bell Pepper Strips ▶1 cup bocconcini, drained

Instructions

Cook pasta according to package. For last three minutes of cooking, add spinach. Drain and remove excess water from spinach. Chop up any big chunks of spinach. To make vinaigrette combine lemon juice through pepper in a food processor until blended. Toss pasta and spinach, roasted peppers, bocconcini and vinaigrette. Chill until ready to serve.

Wedding of the Sea Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

T

he much-anticipated Feast of the Assumption and Wedding of the Sea will take place this year, on Saturday, August 15. The Wedding of the Sea Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Dennis Sullivan at 12:00p.m. noon at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church. Although it is the largest Catholic church in the city, the attendance will be limited according to the gathering restrictions in place in New Jersey at the time The mass will be followed by a procession to the beach and blessing of the Atlantic Ocean – socially distanced of course. The Wedding of the Sea is a tradition that dates back to approximately 1000 AD in Venice, Italy. The ceremony represents the maritime power’s vital relationship to the sea and traditionally involved a “wedding” between the city of Venice and the Adriatic Sea on the Feast of the Ascension of Christ. This was performed by civil and religious leaders of Venice; the historic event was brought to Atlantic City through St Michael’s Church which is a historically Italian parish. There is no denying that one of the main draws of our great city is the Atlantic Ocean, and this ritual is

aimed at blessing and giving thanks to all it provides us and asking God to grant success to all who have worked so hard to make it what it is today. This is not just a ceremony for those who follow God, but is inclusive of anyone and everyone who would like to dedicate a bit of time to focus on giving thanks. Mike is a local AC business owner that attended the ceremony last year and had this to say: “It is just a great way to really appreciate the benefits of living by the Atlantic Ocean, while gracing God and giving thanks. Even if you do not consider yourself as being religious, I enjoyed that it gave me a chance to reflect on how grateful I was to benefit from the sea. If you are looking to show your gratitude even in these uncertain times, this is a fulfilling way to do it.” Unfortunately, the festival that usually takes place after the blessing is cancelled this year due to COVID-19. However, the organizers are encouraging people to still patronize the establishments that would have been in attendance. Additionally, due to gathering restrictions in place in New Jersey, attendance to the Noon Mass is limited and people must register for their place at www. accatholic.org. If you are unable to make it to the mass, there is still the opportunity to attend the ceremony on the beach at St. James Place which will take place at around 1:15 pm. Both the Mass and

procession to the beach will also be livestreamed on diocesan social media, so those who are under quarantine are still able to view it. You can search for “DioceseOfCamden” on Facebook, and “camden diocese” on YouTube and Twitter.

This has always been a hugely popular event in Atlantic City, so with the restrictions in place it is expected that places for the Mass will fill up quickly. Make sure you book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, and experience this uplifting, gratitude-filled ceremony. For more information please visit www.weddingofthesea.org.

Smile To live longer By Nancy Adler

t turns out the benefits of smiling aren’t just limited to yourself. It can also affect those around you. We know that our brains react when we smile, but we’re also rewarded when we see someone else smile. The reward center of our brain is activated and it makes us feel better. Plus, we can’t help but react with a smile of our own when we see someone smiling so it becomes a loop of happiness. They say it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, and although there’s no hard evidence to support that, we do know that smiling comes with some real-life benefits. It’s not always the easiest thing to do, especially after a long and stressful day. But if you can take it upon yourself to crack a smile, you’ll actually feel better. Smiles are powerful. Not only do they generate engagement between two people, but the more someone smiles, the healthier his/her brain can be! Smiling more often, regardless of your mood, can improve your health and even help you live longer. Smiling releases endorphins, which helps a person feel happier and more positive. It’s been found that facial expressions, such as smiling, can improve one’s mood and increase positive thoughts. So, the next time you’re feeling a little blue, try smiling. It might make you feel better! Believe it or not, a good laugh relieves some body aches or pains. As I mentioned above, laughing also

triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemical. I Believe laughter is actually the best medicine, as it allows the body to produce its own natural painkillers. So, get a good laugh in, because it’s healthy. Heart health is very important and laughing or smiling more can help lower your blood pressure. Did you know that the act of laughter can lead to an immediate increase in heart rate and oxygen consumption, followed by a period of muscle relaxation, decreased heart rate and lower blood pressure. Even the small amount helps reduce someone’s risk of developing heart disease. Did you know that laughing or smiling helps boost your body’s immune system? Well, it does! Laughter, which often starts with a smile, increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, which improves your resistance to illnesses. Relieve stress through laughter. That’s right, smiling or laughing activates and relieves your stress response. Individuals that face stressful situations smiling were found to have lower heart rates compared to those who weren’t smiling. Better relationships are experienced. People who smile are usually identified as being more likable, compared to those who don’t smile. If you are a “likable” person, then you also have a better chance at building and maintaining relationships with people, which benefits you and your overall well-being. Smiling makes you more approachable.

While you might not actually decrease in age, smiling or laughing more often can give the illusion that you look younger than you are. Studies show when people looked at photos of happy faces, they guessed the age of the person in the photo as younger compared to photos of the same person with a neutral or angry expression. Go ahead and smile! You’re only embracing your youthful appearance. Feel-good benefits aside, smiling and happiness can actually affect your job performance. Positive emotions appear to invigorate human beings, while negative emotions have the opposite effect. As you can see, smiling and laughter are very beneficial for your mind, body and overall well-being. Regardless of your mood, it’s okay to crack a smile or spit out a laugh. In fact, it’s healthy for you! So the next time you’re feeling like a pick-me-up, try busting out a toothy grin and it could give you the lift you’re looking for. And if you’re already in a good mood, why not flash those pearly whites at a stranger and pass along the good vibes? Nancy Adler is a certified nutritionist and practitioner in Linwood. 'Dawn Patrol' Surfing Can Start a Fantastic Day By Bill Barlow

I

n Ocean City at first light, all waves are hypothetical, while my pillow remains palpably, reliably true. Its folds, its subtle combination of yielding and resilience seem far more welcoming than the night before, but in the end, I prove a faithless companion. I get up. The preparation takes place in a pre-coffee haze: boards on the car, remember to strap them on or it will be a short trip. You make bleary decisions on wetsuits or vests and whether it’s time to wax, and then on to the beach for dawn patrol. The phrase invokes the daring flyers trotting through the early mist to their waiting Sopwith biplanes to roar off to danger and adventure, but I suspect surfers picked it up from Snoopy’s World War I Flying Ace invoking the same scene. Anyway, with the rolling sun up at about 5:45 a.m. this time of year, dawn patrol is probably a misnomer. In the fall, fitting in a pre-work surf will often mean getting up in the dark, hitting the

clouds by the time we reach the beach, and we paddle out in full daylight. We don’t quite have the beach to ourselves. Fishermen get up crazy early, and those guys probably were out on the beach in the dark. There are a few folks surreptitiously running their dogs, but still, things are very quiet on the beach and in the water. There are a few reasons to paddle out this early. That quiet is one. Another is that the waves are sometimes at their best very early, when there is often a breeze

off the land to groom and hold them up before they break. Later in the day, when the lifeguards come on duty to look after everybody, most beaches are closed to surfing. Those that are open, especially guarded beaches set aside for surfers, can get packed. For the pathologically crowdaverse surfer, getting up early can mean a few rides without a lineup, and almost no chance of running into anyone. And then there’s work. rides, and cast a nice echo through your day, while still leaving enough time to get in by 8 a.m., after a shower and a hurried breakfast. Plus, you feel a little like an explorer when you wade in to an empty ocean, pushing through the inside line of breaking waves into the clear green water. There’s often a spray of minnows as you climb that first roller before you find your spot on the outside. Unless you are in one of the very popular breaks, chances are you and your companion are the only human beings in the water for as far as you can see. Osprey and dolphin, also after fish, are also up early, and without the midday crowds, they often hunt in the break, which can mean some pretty spectacular sightings. The backlit humps of the waves cast a shadow as they are about the break. You paddle, maybe you even miss one, but soon you feel the wave pick up your board, moving it without your help, and you’re on your feet, turning into the clear water, alone and alive and flying low on a foam and fiberglass magic carpet. Pillow? What pillow? What could another hour or so of dreaming offer compared to this? At the end of the ride, you fall into

cool water and turn to head back out. When it’s time to head home, you still feel like you’re on a very, very brief vacation. That coffee and toast doesn’t seem like an unnoticed, un-savored daily routine, it seems like a reward. Through the day, you feel a little like you have your own secret, like you’ve gotten away with something, albeit something wholesome. You’ve snuck in some fun on a weekday. OK, sure, sometimes you drag yourself out to find a waveless expanse from the beach to the horizon. Or sometimes, despite a good surf forecast, you get tossed and battered by choppy, closing waves that break everywhere but where you are, and eventually you have to paddle back in, feeling robbed of both sleep and rides. But those mornings straddling your board, watching the sun climb in the sky, watching the beach rake make the rounds like threshers on a Midwest cornfield, bobbing on the outside while you wait for the next set, can sometimes make you wonder why everyone isn’t out early in the waves. Wait, scratch that. If everybody believes me and sets their alarm for 5:30 a.m., the next dawn patrol could be a much different scene.

Plea: Swim in front of a lifeguard

In a challenging summer, OCBP chief says public safety remains guards’ priority

By Bill Barlow

A

fter a busy July, and with the first major tropical storm of the hurricane season to reach the region arriving in early August, Mark Jamieson is not ready to let his guard down. He says you shouldn’t either. “We had a very busy July,” said Jamieson, the operations chief of the Ocean City Beach Patrol. “We had 30 rescues in one day.” Strong currents at the beginning of the summer meant challenges for the beach patrol. The patrol also faced new concerns and procedures due to the pandemic. Like most organizations around the world, the beach patrol enacted new protocols aimed at reducing the potential spread of the coronavirus. For instance, guards do not sit

together on the stand this summer, Jamieson said. “This year, it’s one on the sand, one on the stand,” he said, allowing for at least six feet of distance between the two guards assigned to that stand. That may mean that one guard is out on the rescue board, or one is on top of the stand while the other gets a break from the sun in the shade of the stand. The patrol has new rescue protocols as well, Jamieson said. When possible, a responding guard will throw a floatation device – known as a can – to someone struggling to get in. The guard has a line on the can and a strap over his or her shoulder. If the person in trouble is strong enough to hold on, the guard can pull that person in. The guards also use more chain rescues, with more guards responding to an incident. It is more labor intensive, Jamieson said, but it can mean a safer response. Sometimes, there is no option.

A water rescue can be an intimate procedure. According to Jamieson, guards are trained to minimize the risk of exposure to all involved, but there is always some risk. He said the beach patrol was founded for public safety, and guards, staff and the first aid crew will do all they can to eliminate risks, but some risks remain. There have been instances in which Ocean City guards have been quarantined this summer, he said. The issue of lifeguards and Covid-19 made headlines after 25 members of the Avalon Beach Patrol were quarantined, reportedly after a house party. In Long Beach Island, 35 cases were traced to a party attended by lifeguards, according to news reports. According to Jamieson, Ocean City lifeguards and first aid teams are required to wear masks when interacting with the public closer than the specified 6 feet of social distance. Lifeguards and other emergency responders were involved in multiple rescues this summer. In an early July incident, police and firefighters

pulled ashore two 18-year-old women at about 8 a.m. at Moorlyn Terrace, before the guards were on for the day, according to a published report. Both women walked away. Not every story ends happily. On the evening of July 12, Jabed Ikbal, 24, of Clementon, entered the waters of the Great Egg Harbor Inlet near the Longport Bridge to help a young relative who was struggling in the strong current. The relative made it back to the beach, but Ikbal did not. The beach in that area is not protected by lifeguards, and signs warn of dangerous currents. It may look benign, with no waves on that side of the beach. Only swim in front of a lifeguard, Jamieson said, a plea repeated every summer by every lifeguard chief. The lifeguards place their stands based on years of experience with ocean currents. He said visitors – and locals as well – should get to know the beach before entering the water, and understand that powerful currents can form along jetties, in inlets or where

the tides rush out between waves. Even the strongest swimmers can have trouble fighting a rip current, in which massive amounts of water brought in by the waves rushes back out to the ocean. Time and again, swimmers exhaust themselves fighting the current and they are pushed out over their heads. Experts suggest not fighting the current, but instead trying to swim parallel to the beach and out of the current into easier water before trying to make your way back in. For those on the beach who see someone in trouble, Jamieson said to call 911 and to keep an eye on them to direct the rescue teams to them. “We want you to be visual rescuers,” he said. Even rookie lifeguards have undergone 40 hours of training, after qualifying for a spot on the patrol in a grueling physical competition. “Very often, it’s the person who goes out to try to help who ends up in trouble.” On the same weekend that saw the loss of Ikbal, Jalan Alston, 18, of Brooklyn rescued two of his friends

that Friday evening on the beach in Ventnor, but did not make it back to the beach alive. The OCBP guards more than 40 beaches from the Great Egg Harbor Inlet to the stand at 60th Street, the beginning of the Corson’s Inlet State Park in the south end of the island. Guards are on duty from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays, until 5:30 on weekends, with extended hours at Brighton Place, 8th Street, 9th Street, 12th Street and 34th Street, which are guarded until 7 p.m. daily. There are protected surfing beaches at Waverly Boulevard, 7th Street and 16th Street. In addition to other challenges this summer, the Ocean City beaches downtown are in the midst of a beach replenishment project, which requires about a block of beach to be closed. According to Jamieson, the added sand takes a while to settle, which can mean rapidly changing sandbars under the water and changing currents near the edge of the completed beach, one more challenge for guards this year.

Adopting a pet: 101 By Erica Hoffman

T

o be completely honest, I adopted my cat on a whim. I brought him home to my boyfriend who was understandably a little ticked off at me for adding a new member to our little family with almost no conversation about this huge life-altering move. Fast forward two years, he sings to the cat every day and they are best buddies. Most of the time, adopting a pet with no forethought doesn’t end in you magically finding your perfect match. Fortunately, this cat turned out to be the best animal for us. This is rare and not even close to the right way to go about adopting a pet who, if all goes according to plan, you will be living with for the next 15 years or so. I’ve since learned that pairing the right pet with the right person or family is not usually as easy as it was for me. There are tons of details that should be considered, and a massive amount of resources in our area that

Over 50Years of Goodness

can help you and your family make the right decision. Since it’s almost too easy to fall in love at first sight with a cute furry friend only to find out you two are not on the same wavelength, I’ve put together some of the most important and sometimes overlooked details one should consider when beginning their pet adoption journey. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before committing to adopting a pet: ● Do you have any other pets and how will they react to a new pet? Are they going to be welcoming, territorial, or are they going to retreat under the bed for the foreseeable future? ● What do you expect your pet to contribute to your life? For example, do you want a running and hiking buddy, or is your idea of exercise watching an exercise video on your phone while eating Doritos? ● If you are thinking of adopting a young animal, do you have the time and patience to work with the pet through its adolescence, taking into account house-break-

ing, chewing, and energy level? Basically, are you ready for an infant? If you’re adopting a puppy or a kitten, you better be! ● What size pet can your home accommodate? It just seems mean to lock up a 40-pound dog in a small studio apartment. ● Is there an adult in the family who has agreed to be ultimately responsible for the pet’s care? On a personal note, this was pretty much the only thing I took into consideration when I hastily decided to adopt. I knew I would be responsible for this living, breathing ball of love. I gave it real thought, past the surface thoughts of litter box maintenance, more into the existential thought of this being something you actively have to keep alive and was I sure I could do this? I was sure. If you don’t know the answers to some of these questions right now, that’s okay. There are plenty of ways

Largest Selection of Organic Produce

to become more comfortable and knowledgeable about what you want. Google is your best friend when it comes to information on pets. Learn as much as you can about different breeds and discover what you really should be looking for. Some people find that volunteering at a local shelter or rescue organization can help sort out some of the unknown answers you may have. Fostering a pet is also an option but do your homework on fostering. Make sure you know what you're getting yourself into both financially and emotionally. Once you’ve narrowed down the basics, you are ready to start looking. We’re fortunate to have plenty of respected and reputable shelters and non-profit organizations in our area to ensure you find your perfect match. These are just a few of the local organizations doing good for the community, and potentially, housing your next furry best friend.

Going Fishing With The Family By Krystle J. Bailey

I

hope you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. Even though life hasn’t been exactly “normal” lately, I have been really focused on trying to enjoy life for all that it has to offer right now. The combination of social distancing measures, closed establishments, and the threat of Covid-19 in the air offers a new challenge for finding family fun. With so much at our fingertips on the Jersey Shore, there is definitely fun to be had. I have not been fishing since I was a kid. Growing up in Somers Point, our family friend used to take my sister and I out on his small boat to throw our lines in the water. We often found ourselves fishing in Atlantic

County Park with hot dogs as bait as we reeled in catfish. Though my husband and I both grew up around the water, it had been decades since either of us strung worms on a hook. We were long overdue for a crash course in fishing. Chances are, without the tugging of our five-year-old son, we likely wouldn’t have made time to re-learn how to fish. Our little guy had been asking for weeks to learn how to fish so we took to Atlantic City and threw ourselves headfirst into the learning curve. The fishing community is incredible! We were immediately surrounded by new friends who showed my family the ropes. Our first stop was Bass Pro Shops where we picked out fishing poles and spoke with the fishing expert staff. From there, we made our way to One-Stop Bait and Tackle where our new friend Noel spoke about the beautiful family experiences that fishing offers. He walked us through how to rig the fishing pole, what kinds of weights we would need, what types of fish we would be

looking for, and more. Once on our way, we found a perfect spot on Maine Ave in Atlantic City to cast our lines. Luckily, we landed right next to two local fishermen who took us under their wings, embraced my kids, and showed us the way. They offered the kids lessons in live bait, different types of fish, and how to throw their line in the water. As we hung out all day in our favorite city, making new friends and trying a new family activity, I felt abundantly blessed. We live in a tourist destination with beautiful landscapes and resources all around us that often get taken for granted. I am definitely guilty of not taking full advantage of the beautiful shore that we get to call home. I know the world feels scary right now in a lot of ways and there is so much that we can not change. However, what we can do is lean into all that is good. I share my family story with you to encourage you to do the same - lean into all that is GOOD in your world right now. Get creative if you have to. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Use the kids as a guide to trying new things. Another addition to our family

dynamic has been our new Youtube channel: Shore Kidz TV where you can watch our fishing adventure. Youtube is another request of the children that I have been avoiding forever. Given our current situation and extra time on our hands, I decided it was a great opportunity to teach them some life lessons. We’ve chosen to make our Youtube public, however, you can also implement the same life lessons while making a channel private. Lessons include public speaking, projecting their voices, enunciating their words, creating a plan, and then seeing it through to fruition, and video editing. Then, of course, there are the lessons they will learn through various topics that we cover on our channel. The world is full of experiences to be had and things to learn. As our new normal continues to unfold, I am looking for ways to combine fun and education for our whole family. As I do, I will continue to share them with you! Krystle J Bailey. A

nother week, another question of whether there will be high school sports in Pennsylvania this fall. There are also questions about whether there will be college football in the fall around the country. I keep telling folks that if the NFL gets called off, I will really be upset. Since I last wrote, there has been a bunch of good news. The Flyers advanced out of round-robin play unbeaten and will now be the #1 seed when the NHL playoffs begin this week. The Phillies had just about tried all of my patience, but then got a gem from #1 starter Aaron Nola that has calmed me down a little. The Sixers lost a key member of their team to injury, and then perhaps the biggest star on the team left with injury too. The Eagles continue to work out in preparation for the regular season. The Birds also welcome back a former standout to the nest. The Philadelphia Union’s run at the MLS return to play comes to an end, but what a

run it was! If you weren’t tuned in to the PGA Championship last Sunday, you missed out on some unbelievable drama as at one point down the stretch, there was a seven-way tie for the lead. Plus a golf shot for the ages. Finally, on the local level, a major announcement comes from the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Also, the Atlantic County Baseball League playoffs have reached the Finals and the two teams that are in the finals may not be who most would’ve predicted. From the entertainment world, I enjoyed two movies that I would’ve loved on the big screen, but unfortunately the theaters are still closed, so I settled for watching them on TV. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts. I can’t say enough good things about the Philadelphia Flyers as they finished round-robin play unbeaten and soundly handled Boston, Washington and then Tampa Bay to grab the #1 seed for the playoffs moving forward. I think the best part of the wins was the fact that guys like

When You Need The

Best Care For Your

Emergency

Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek and Travis Konecny weren’t the ones lighting the lamp on a regular basis. It’s been the young guys and the 4th liners who have contributed the most. That 4th line group includes trade deadline pickups like Nate Thompson and Derek Grant. Both are key pieces to a Flyers team that is much better in their own end this season. Scott Laughton was explosive in the round-robin portion of things, and I’d love to see that continue into the actual playoffs. The biggest piece for the Flyers continues to be 21-year-old goaltender Carter Hart. If the Flyers are going to go far and maybe hoist a silver chalice at the end of things, they’ll need Hart to continue to play as well as he did

in round-robin play. Hart will go up against his childhood idol in the other net, as Montreal features Carey Price in net. Former Boston coach Claude Julien is now in charge of the Habs, and seeing as how Montreal was a #12 seed and knocked out Pittsburgh, the Flyers cannot afford to look past the Canadians or take them lightly. My one concern with the Flyers is their power play as they went 0-for-11 during round-robin play on the man-advantage. Of course, Montreal went 0-for-12 and they advanced too, but you have to think special teams will play a factor in who wins this series. Game 1 against Montreal is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday night (8/12) and Game 2 is set for Friday (8/14) at 3 p.m. Game 3 will be on Sunday night (8/16) at 8 p.m and Game 4 is set for Tuesday (8/18) at 1 p.m. Games 5, 6 & 7 are if necessary and TBD. Let’s go Flyers! Now we can switch over to the Phillies, and after they got swept in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday against the Braves, I was

ready to rip them big-time! Then, Monday night’s game happened and Aaron Nola pitched a gem. Plus, the Phillies led 10-1 after two full innings of play. It’s amazing how my mood can change when the #1 starter pitches like an ace and the bats finally come alive! That was the one problem I had with Monday’s 13-8 win over the Braves. Manager Joe Girardi pulled Aaron Nola after 8 innings of work and I thought he should’ve given him a chance to finish the game. First of all, Nola has never thrown a pitch in the 9th inning of a major league game. This was his chance. Second, he only had thrown 89 pitches and easily could’ve gone out for the 9th. Girardi brought in relief pitcher Nick Pivetta and he got lit up like a Christmas tree! Pivetta only recorded one out, gave up 6 runs on 6 hits, all of them earned. Pivetta’s E.R.A. is now a whopping 15.88 and he should be sent down to Lehigh Valley immediately. The bats certainly came alive in the win over the Braves too. The Phillies had four homers and scored 10 runs within the first two innings of a game for the first time in club history, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Didi Gregorius hit a grand slam. Bryce Harper launched a three-run shot. Roman Quinn, Jean Segura and J.T. Realmuto all hit solo home runs. And the Phillies bullpen still almost blew it. Up next, three at home against Baltimore followed by three more at home against the Mets. There may be some relief coming as Phillies relievers David Robertson

AUGUST 13, 2020

and Ranger Suarez are throwing at the Phillies complex in Clearwater, Florida. Robertson, a former closer, is coming off Tommy John surgery. Suarez tested positive for COVID-19 before the season, but is coming back slowly. My last word on the Phillies is about rookie pitcher Spencer Howard, who started game 2 of that double dip last Sunday. He didn’t light the world on fire, but he also didn’t stink up the joint in my opinion. He got Marcell Ozuna swinging on a nasty 85 mile-per-hour slider to end the top of the first inning. He struck out Ozuna again in the 5th and the Braves designated hitter snapped his bat in frustration. Howard’s final line was 4.2 innings, four runs on seven hits, 4 strikeouts, and 1 walk. Again, not the best debut, but definitely not the worst that I’ve ever seen. I hope Girardi gives him a chance again on Friday when that spot comes up. Put Vince Velasquez in the bullpen and let the 24-year-old Howard nail down that 5th spot in the rotation! In my last column, I wrote about how Sixers star Ben Simmons was “missing” in Orlando. Now, he’s really missing as he hobbled off the court last Wednesday with a partial dislocation of his left kneecap against the Wizards. Then, he left the bubble to have surgery back in Philadelphia. Some reports say he’s going to be finished for the season, but Simmons himself says he wants to wait and see how he responds to the surgery be-

↘Continued from 31 fore making that decision. Either way, the Sixers are definitely without one of their key players right now. And that’s only the start of the problem for the Sixers. During their game this past Sunday against Portland, center Joel Embiid turned his ankle while stepping awkwardly on the basket stanchion after trying to block a shot in the first quarter. Embiid left the ballgame and did not return to action, but he did return to the bench. When the Sixers made a big run, and even took the lead, Embiid was all smiles, so hopefully his injury isn’t serious. No matter how you slice it, the idea was that the Sixers could make some noise in Orlando in the lead up to the playoffs and who knows after that? In reality, they haven’t been healthy

enough, or defensive enough to impress so far. The big news out of Eagles training camp as of this writing is that the Birds have signed 32-year-old Vinny Curry and welcomed him back to the nest. Curry will be added to a defensive end group that features Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett as starters and Josh Sweat, Genard Avery, Shareef Miller, Joe Ostman, Daeshon Hall & rookie Casey Toohill as backups. Last season, Curry was a reserve for the Eagles and played in all 16 games, finishing with five sacks, 12 QB hits and five tackles for loss. I’m glad to see Curry come back and hope he will be a key reserve piece for the Birds defense. Speaking of the “D”, Jim Schwartz usually doesn’t reveal much about

his strategy or plans ahead of time, but he did reveal to reporters recently that for the first time since he became Doug Pederson’s lieutenant in 2016, he’s going to have a cornerback “travel” with the opposing team’s best wide receiver. Hey, I absolutely love that idea, but I love it more ever since the Birds signed free-agent Darius Slay away from Detroit. The 29-year-old Slay is the one guy who can stay with the opponent’s top wide receiver and also be a “ball hawk” in the secondary. I can’t wait to see what Slay brings to the table!

One more football item that is just coming in as I write this, and that’s about college football. Reports out there had the Big Ten sending word to the presidents of member schools that there would be no football this fall, but nothing official yet. Scott Frost, the head coach at Nebraska, told reporters that if that turned out to be true, he’d ask his athletic director to investigate playing games against the Big 12, the conference the Huskers used to be in! Remember, Penn State plays in the Big Ten. So does Rutgers. Keep that in mind as things move forward. Major props to the Philadelphia Union as they made it all the way to the semifinals of the MLS “return to play” event in Florida. They ultimately fell 2-1 to the Portland Timbers, but they certainly made a fan out of this columnist and I hope they continue to succeed when regular MLS play resumes for them on August 21st. What a weird Sunday at the PGA Championship last week as both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson made the cut, but were part of the Sunday morning action, as neither player had any legitimate threat of winning. Instead, by Sunday evening, the leaderboard was stacked with young players and, at one point, a seven-way tie for the lead! Great drama. No shot was more memorable than the one that Collin Morikawa struck on the par-4 16th hole at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Morikawa stepped up and cut a drive from left to right that bounced in front of the green and rolled up to seven feet away from the cup. He then ran that putt in for an eagle-two and never looked back, winning the PGA Championship by two shots. I remember when Tiger Woods chipped in at 16 at the Masters and then Nike made a commercial out of it. A television commentator said that Taylor Made should make a commercial out of Morikawa’s shot now, because it was that good. The only thing that was a shame was that since there were no fans, you had no crowd reaction to that shot. I can tell you though, that twitter exploded after he did that. 15 months ago, this kid was playing college golf for Cal. Now, he’s a major champion and going to be fun to watch!

AUGUST 13, 2020

On the local front, the ShopRite LPGA has announced that this year’s event will be held without fans. This is sad because that means no pro-am (the largest one in all of golf), no sky boxes behind 17 and 18, no galleries on the grounds of the Seaview Bay Course. The good news is that the tournament is going to be expanded from 54 to 72 holes. Plus, all the action will be on The Golf Channel, so I’m sad there won’t be fans this year, but am happy the tournament is going to be played. You can watch the coverage on October 1-4. I’ll be tuned in for sure! My last sports item is once again about the locally run ACBL, or Atlantic County Baseball League. They’re through to the finals and for the first time in what seems like forever, neither the Margate Hurricanes nor Hammonton are in the finals. Big time congratulations to Absecon and Ocean City for reaching the finals. Absecon is trying to win for the first time since 1973 and Ocean City hasn’t won a county league title since 1994. Reportedly, OC won Game 1 at home in the best of three series, and that sends things to Absecon for Game 2 as of this writing. Either way, props to OC coach Ted Khoury and Absecon first-year coach Ray Keelan for reaching the finals and beating perennial favorites Margate and Hammonton to do so.

I’ll close with two items from entertainment as I caught up on two movies this past week that I really wanted to see in the theater, but had to settle for watching them at home, starting with “Ford vs. Ferrari”. Now, I’m not the world’s biggest car guy, but I was riveted watching the story of how Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and his British driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) teamed up with Ford to create a race car good enough to win the 24 hours of Le Mans race in France in 1966. The acting was superb in this one with Damon and Bale both inhabiting their roles completely. Even the minor parts, like Josh Lucas as a Ford executive who isn’t a fan of Miles, and Jon Bernthal playing a young Lee Lacocca are excellent. If you see it in your guide on your TV, take a minute to DVR it and watch it later, or just lock in and watch it as you see it! Lastly, I took the time to watch “Judy” the 2019 biographical drama film starring Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland. Wow. What a performance by the now 51-year-old Zellweger as she becomes Judy Garland in the film. I have to admit, my knowledge of Garland going in wasn’t too deep, as I knew she was Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” and I knew she died young. The movie “Judy” lets us in to some of the battles that Miss Garland

reportedly went through and Zellweger is simply outstanding in the role. Apparently the voting members of the Academy felt the same way as she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her work. I came away very impressed with this movie. I’ll close by reminding everyone to wear your mask when you’re out in public. Everyone I think is on edge right now as September and the school year fast approaches. While we enjoy a few more weeks of summer, take a minute to have some empathy for others. Be kind, wear your mask, and be patient. We can all knock down this COVID-19 together. Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. Generosity pours into Jewish Family Services

By Erica Hoffman

T

he amount of generosity flooding into Jewish Family Services of Atlantic County is overwhelming. Thanks to so many substantial financial and in-kind donations, The Food Pantry at JFS is stocked with supplies which they are using to help over 225 individuals and families per week, which is up from helping an average of 200 people per month, pre-pandemic. “We had to convert our boardroom into more food storage space, but none of us were complaining,” says Susan Kotzen, Director of Communications and Donor Relations for Jewish Family Services. “As a non-profit agency, we strive to assure that our services and programs are consistently shared so individuals and families who need JFS services – food, counseling, grocery shopping, virtual events for our Village by the Shore members (age 50+) –

know that we are here to help,” Kotzen added. The NJ Pandemic Relief Fund, OceanFirst Foundation, and Beth Israel Sisterhood are among some of their generous financial supporters. AkPharma, Kessler Foundation, Antoinette & Eric Wood, Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, MANNA at The Shore, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Morris Bailey & Family who are the owners of Resorts Casino Hotel, and Emily Marchese have also all generously given to COVID-19 relief efforts. Hafetz & Associates employees donated $10,000 to assure seniors are safe and healthy. Their support assures Village by the Shore services including Kosher Meals on Wheels, transportation to essential doctor’s appointments, virtual socialization,

and grocery delivery to the 200 seniors who rely on JFS. The outpouring of donations couldn’t have come at a better time. To date, JFS has had to cancel some of its most lucrative (and highly anticipated) fundraisers. Included are the 13th Annual Cocktail Party, (which they quickly and smartly transformed into a ‘Stay Home & Support: No Show Cocktail Party’ which raised an impressive $27,000) their 33rd Annual House Tour, and their 7th Annual Card Party. It is important to note that The Food Pantry at JFS is not only open to the Jewish community. The JFS Food Pantry is open to Atlantic County residents regardless of their religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or background. The Pantry is stocked with non-perishables including cereals, pasta, soups, peanut butter, shelf milk, juices, tuna, and more. It also has essentials such as diapers, wipes, and formula. Pantry hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 2 pm at 607 North Jerome Avenue in Margate. They provide a contactless drive-thru interaction where the client pulls up to the side of the building, opens their trunk, and food is placed in the vehicle.

If you have the means, plea se consider donating some non-perishables to one of the JFS collection bins located at the Pleasantville Police Department, Linwood City Hall, Ventnor City Hall, and the JFS Margate office. To make a secure online donation, visit jfsatlantic.org or mail a check to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties, 607 North Jerome Avenue, Margate, NJ 08402. Other ways to help include volunteering in the Food Pantry, delivering food bags, and working with their clients through their “Shop at Home” program. Those interested in volunteering may contact Vanessa Smith, JFS Volunteer Services Supervisor at vsmith@jfsatlantic.org, or call 609.822.1108, x249 for ways to get involved. Boots in the ‘barrens : A True Mystery Tales from the Pines By Paul E. Pedersen, Jr.

I

will wonder about those boots in that flatbed truck until the day I die. The real thing I’ll always wonder about is…whether or not someone’s legs were in them. I saw them one evening as the sun was going down in the Pine Barrens. My wife and I were on our way to a show…a gig…that we and our band, Cookie Evans & The Voodoo Band were booked to do at the Green Bank Tavern out there in the middle of the Pine Barrens. We were, at the time, the ’house band’ at the Green Bank, playing every weekend. We’d stopped into a little country store that was actually called, “The Country Store”, for a pack of smokes and some juice about a mile west of the bar. A flat bed-style pick-up truck pulled in the parking lot as we were coming out of the store. Two bearded guys dressed in jeans passed us going up the steps.

The truck they had just gotten out of was loaded with branches, some logs, and brush piled way high over the sides of the truck bed. We walked past it, and got into our Pathfinder, taking a few minutes to relax, pre-gig, and talk about the probable goings-ons that a night at “The Bank” usually brought. I lit a cigarette, and Cookie took a sip of her juice as the two guys got back into their truck. The driver looked me straight in the eyes for a couple of seconds before he opened his door, and I thought for a moment he was going to say something. He didn’t. He got in, started the truck, backed up a little, and pulled out, slowly leaving the parking lot, and heading east on 542. And there they were. Under all those sticks, logs, and brush, sticking out just a couple of inches in the middle of the bed. A light brown pair of boots. Work boots. Positioned as if the wearer was lying on his back. They were well-worn and crusted with sand and dirt, it looked like to me. I couldn’t see whether or not they were tied. But there they were. And they weren’t moving. “Do you see what I see?”, I said to my wife. She paused for a couple moments, then answered, turning to look at me, “I don’t know if I should or not, should we”?

Cookie was, and is, very even-keeled and steady, as far as on-the-spot emotions and jumping to conclusions goes. Having grown up in the notorious “K&A” neighborhood of northeast Philly, she’s seen some things along the way that have tempered the usual over excited-ness one might expect from a gal that grew up in the calmer suburbs across the river. “Ya think it’s possible they don’t know that someone is under all that stuff?”, I asked, trying to make sense of what we were seeing. “Maybe the stuff fell in the bed and landed on him, and they don’t know it? Maybe they used the chain saw on him and they’re headed for a hole to make a deposit? Maybe…?” “Maybe it’s a pair of work boots somebody took off and threw in the back of their truck after a hard day of clearing out the yard, and then stopped at the store for a Coke? Ya think?”, she interrupted, now getting a bit annoyed at my over-active imagination. She knew, after fifteen years of marriage to me, how the smallest, most innocent and unpretentious set of circumstances could evolve in my mind, quickly, into a “World News Tonight“-worthy story. My OCD and ADA could sometimes kick in together with my creative writing and abstract thinking mindset, and Holy Moly, hold on to your hat! Or, in this case, your boots!

“Yeah, but did you see how the toes were sticking straight up like that?”, I continued. “C’mon. Let’s get to the gig before you have people down here lookin’ for empty boots, Hoffa‘s, and Earhart’s”, she said, the ‘Philly-girl’ accent knocking the ‘r’s’ off her words, and drawing the “C’mon” to “ka-maaaaan”. The gig went great, and Lorraine, the owner, thanked us for another great show. After most of the crowd had gone, Lorraine set the band up with a round of drinks on the house, as was her usual custom, and we all sat at the bar talking about the night and how things went. I told my ‘boots’ story to everybody, Cookie groaning all through it, of course, and asked everyone what they thought about it. Everybody sided with Cookie’s explanation, except Lorraine, who, true to that ‘Piney’ wit of hers said, “There’s only two other people who oughtta care about those boots, Paul. And you ain’t one of ‘em”. “What’s that mean, Lorraine?”, I protested. She smiled, drank the last sip from her drink, and said, heading to her apartment on the second floor, “You’ll figure it out someday”. I’m still wondering about those boots, Lorraine.

What's for dinner? The Sandwich Stop Deli

The Light with Raymond Tyler

M

onday evening about dinner time I found myself with a craving for chicken wings. And not just any chicken wings, I wanted whole wings not wingettes or wing dings. In fact, if I had a magic wand I would have had some Wings from Sam’s Rialto Grill on Main Street. However, Sam’s Rialto has been closed for more than a year. I called a couple of places but no one served whole wings. Then I got a recommendation from friend/caterer Shavon Comeaux about The Sandwich Stop. I had passed by The Sandwich Stop many times and thought it looked more like a corner store than a source for great prepared dinners. However, knowing Ms. Comeaux as a great cook I decided to give it a try. First of all,The Sandwich Stop looks like a bodega that you might see in Brooklyn. The people working were friendly and even offered samples. (which never happens in the bodega) The Sandwich Stop is clean and neat. I loved everything about the look

AUGUST 13, 2020

of The Sandwich Stop. Every cup and napkin is exactly in place. I ordered 10 full wings and a garden salad. Here’s what I found. Wings - The wings were fried and beautiful. No feathers or burned hair. These wings looked like wings my mom would have prepared. Some places serve chicken wings that look like they lost a fight. The wings smelled better than they looked. The taste however did not quite measure up. I love when wings are so good you do not “NEED” sauce. I would not have enjoyed these wings dry (so I am glad I had hot sauce.) Sandwich Stop wings are still above average in

taste and way above in presentation. I would go back for wings there in the future. The Garden Salad This was the best part of my meal. The salad was fresh and not a piece of brown lettuce anywhere. In fact, every aspect from the purple onions to the red peppers all tasted as if they were hand picked this morning. The Sandwich Stop presented to me the best looking and tasting garden salad I have ever had. The portions were enough to make me come back in the future for more salad and to try the

rest of The Sandwich Stop’s menu. If you’d like to see/hear my 2 part video review and see the food right out of my take out bag? Please follow me on facebook or youtube. The Sandwich Stop Deli is located at 104 South Franklin Boulevard in Pleasantville. It is open seven days a week for take out only. They can be reached at 609-6465877.

Dragons and Damsels in the Garden By Tammy Thornton

I

t may sound like fantasy, but dragons and damsels in your garden can become a real-life fairy tale in your backyard. Many of us are familiar with the translucent wings and iridescent colors of dragonflies and damselflies. But did you know these unique creatures are voracious predators that feed on mosquitoes, blackflies, greenheads, deer flies, and gnats? That’s the type of flying insect that I want to invite to my garden. You can create a habitat that will attract them to your yard and they will gladly return the favor by helping themselves to breakfast, with mosquitoes as the main entree. Dragonflies and damselflies are both of the insect order Odonata and are mainly aquatic creatures, living the greater part of their lives under water. By the time you see them flying around, they are at the end of

their life cycle. Adult female dragonflies lay their eggs in or on the water, and in some cases deposit them in the stems of aquatic plants. Larvae called nymphs or naiads can live for months or years in this aquatic home before becoming adult dragonflies. Word Nerd

hore Local brought together a list of words which you probably won’t need in everyday conversation but may expand your vocabulary with weird and wonderful gems. This week’s lesson starts with unusual words that start with G.

GAMMICISM The inability or hardship in pronouncing letters 'g' and 'k'. Good thing you are not reading this out loud.

OPEN FROM 11AM CLOSED MONDAY

609-645-0500

GAMOPHOBIA If your spouse has gamophobia, you should get a lawyer, because gamophobia is a fear of marriage. The popular slang is “cold feet”…but if you say you have full-blown gamophobia, people will take you more seriously and you won’t have to get hitched. Just make sure you get a doctor’s note. GASTROSOPHER A person skilled in matters of eating. It sounds better than “pig”. GOBS A very large amount of something. Kids often use it because they have no sense of quantity. “How much candy did you get?” “Gobs!” GOON If you call someone a goon, you’d better hope they aren’t really a goon. If they are a genuine goon, you might be in for a whooping, because goons are super tough guys who don’t fool around. And they don’t like being called goons, either.

GOLD DIGGER This word is an odd one because the last thing a gold digger wants to do is any digging. A gold digger wants to do the opposite of digging. They want to sit around and enjoy the gold, but they certainly do not want to work for it. Maybe it should be “gold sitter.” GORGONIZE To turn into stone; to paralyze with one's gaze. GYASCUTUS An imaginary large four-legged beast with legs on one side longer than on the other for walking on hillsides. It made its first appearance in American newspapers in the 1840s, and has played a minor role in American folklore since then. Definitions courtesy of Oxford Dictionary

Supporting Local: Fischer’s Shoes Generations of Shoes

to fix foot development problems. Sadly for the Fischer family, Irv died young at the age of 44. Fortunately, his steady work ethic lived on in his sons Norman and Martin, who both began working at the store before they were even teenagers. The two were able to take over the store, ultimately moving it to

he Fi s c h e r family has been helping properly f it children's feet while finding them the right pair of shoes through three generations, and almost 75 years. Despite the ease of online shopping not to mention a global pandemic, this quintessential mom and pop store is thriving as it sits comfortably inside of Central Square Shopping Center in Linwood. The still charming shoe store first opened as “Irv Fischer’s Shoes” in 1946 in Atlantic City after Fischer came home from serving in the Navy. Originally, in addition to selling shoes for the whole family, the store also worked with orthopedic doctors

Margate, where it was lovingly run by Norman and his wife Audrey for nearly 40 years. Keeping with the Fischer tradition, Norman’s son, Alan began working at the store at the young age of 13. After graduating college, Alan took over as the now third-generation owner of Fischer’s Shoes. In 1996 Fischer moved the popular shoe store to its current home in Linwood, where you will occasionally see Norman helping out behind the counter, where they still use the original cash register from 1946. Even though times are far from normal, their classic small-town charm and commitment to exceptional service have not changed. They measure every customer using the old school, tried and true

Brannock device which measures the length and width of feet, ultimately helping to find the right shoes that fit properly (we all know how uncomfortable wearing the wrong size shoe is). Keep in mind you will need an appointment (and a mask) for your next visit to Fischer’s Shoes. To make an appointment you can visit their website, www.fischershoes.com. Here’s to supporting local small businesses! Erica Hoffman was born in Atlantic City and is proud to be writing for Shore Local. She lives in South Jersey and enjoys finding and sharing the lighter side of life.
