Absecon Lighthouse Celebrates National Lighthouse Day in a New Way

'm writing this to candlelight courtesy of Tropical Storm Isaias that swept through today. Like thousands of others, our power has been out for several hours. Isn't it funny how we take things for granted, until they suddenly disappear? That includes our missing internet service too! Still, we know we are very fortunate.

Many trees and branches fell causing major damage to homes and businesses throughout our area. We pray all of you are safe and well in the aftermath of the storm.

Aside from hurricane season, August days are the days I savor, the sights and sounds and feeling of salt water splashing my face and sand between my toes.

of crickets as I walk my dogs in the moonlight is music to my soul. My heart leaps at the sight of sunflower fields in full bloom and the farmers markets, overflowing with fresh produce. If there was one month I could put on replay over and over again, it would surely be August.

Even as we continue to social distance and face a multitude of challenges, the simplest pleasures like barbecues, bike riding, beach days and floating in a pool bring great joy.

In this issue of Shore Local, Mari Dattolo takes a look back at Mays Landing's infamous train wreck, a tragedy of extraordinary magnitude, that occurred 140 years ago. Be sure to check it out on page 8.

Bill Barlow writes a very interesting article about the shortage of bicycles we are now experiencing. (Better than toilet paper, right?)

Checking Out Ocean City’s Newest Restaurants

cean City is known for its diverse variety of restaurants. Over the past few months, several new eateries have opened for the first time in attempt to spark your taste buds.

Below is a sample of the latest venues offering an entire menu of new flavors and classics.

If you’re looking for your new favorite breakfast spot, I may have found the place for you. Hooked on Breakfast celebrated its grand opening last month. The owners, Alicia and Kevin Stauffer, purchased the building at 916 Asbury Avenue and began building their dream restaurant.

Alicia and Kevin Stauffer met while working at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House.

They have been married for over 20 years and have three children, all of whom assist in the operation of the restaurant. Prior to opening, Kevin

worked in the Atlantic City’s casino industry. Alicia is currently a school teacher in Galloway.

At Hooked on Breakfast, you will find a variety of menu items, including traditional favorites such as omeletes to scrambled eggs and french toast. Their specialty is the Breakfast Sushi Special, made only on Tuesdays.

This mouth-watering dish consists of homemade crepes filled with fresh fruit and sour cream, served next to a hot cinnamon egg roll. It is simply delicious. Hooked on Breakfast is open daily for breakfast and lunch, with expanded outdoor seating and takeout available.

Donny’s Family Kitchen is one of the newest restaurants. Located at 736 Wesley Avenue, this restaurant serves Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, but with a twist. The food here is always fresh, according to co-owner Kyle Gillen. “Deliveries are made daily, so everything gets turned around in 24 hours.”

On the inside, you will notice a completely renovated dining room.

Check out the eccentric artwork spotlighting city artists and the good vibes that make this restaurant special. There’s plenty of outdoor seating,

Capt’n Chucky’s Crab Cake Co. has opened its newest location in Ocean City at 210 10th Street, at the corner of West Avenue. Capt’n Chucky’s is a name you may recognize. Owners Chuck and Nancy Wojciehowski opened their first restaurant called “Taste of Philadelphia” while living in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2001, the couple focused their efforts into cooking.

Today, Capt’n Chucky’s operates 14 locations throughout the region.

The menu here is extensive, but they are well known for their jumbo lump crab cakes, named “Best of the Chesapeake.” Homemade soups and pasta are also available. Call ahead or visit their website for up-to-date information.

And if you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, head over to Chill Hand Rolled Ice Cream. They’ve opened up their newest location at 1015 Asbury Ave. If you’re never tried hand rolled ice cream before, it is one of the newest food sensations to hit the U.S. in recent years, originating as a street food in Southeast Asia, and it is worth the wait. You stand in line

as watch as your dessert is made on a cold stir fry pan. Once the process is complete, the ice cream is rolled up and served with your choice of toppings, anything from fresh fruit to oreos, even roasted marshmallows.

Other menu items include the Aussie Bowl, which is cereal topped with ice cream and your choice of fruit.

While the ongoing pandemic continues to have an affect on businesses locally and nationwide, restaurants have stayed opening to the public, providing delivery, takeout and outdoor dining. We are appreciative for all the new restaurants that remain dedicated to serving their customers, and the employees who work there.

A Look Back at South Jersey's Worst Train Wreck 140 years since the disaster on the West Jersey Line

n August 11, 1880 the mill town of Mays Landing, NJ was called to serve in a most unexpected and tragic circumstance. Just seven weeks before, the spur of the new railroad line of the West Jersey was opened, connecting the county’s seat

with the cities of Philadelphia and Atlantic City. It came by way of the Pennsylvania Railroad to move both passengers and freight, but more specifically cotton and its by-products, following the American Civil War. Cotton mills and their noted industrialist owners would often dominate both the economy and politics in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

Remnants of the trestle bridge, built in 1880, still exist today over the Great Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing.

On this historic date, the first charter excursion would have been eagerly anticipated by the 1400 working class men, women and children from Philadelphia. A welcomed excursion to the Jersey Shore!

Passengers were Irish immigrants hailing from St. Anne’s Literary So-

ciety and neighboring Philadelphia churches. They left early from the city, taking the ferry into Camden then leaving for the shore on the twenty four privately scheduled passenger cars. Rather than run one consist to Atlantic City, just prior to departure the party was divided into

two trains, comprised of eight and sixteen passenger cars, respectively.

Not only were the cars over occupancy limits, but rules of the road would necessitate enforcement regarding lag time. On this first charter of the inaugural season, their neglect would prove a deadly error.

After a day of making pleasant memories at the beach, the weary travelers boarded the cars for the return. The first train left on a 6PM departure, followed by the second at 6:05PM. Seventeen miles from Atlantic City, during an evening summer

storm, the trains reached the village of Mays Landing. They cleared the single track for the southbound express, just beyond the trestle bridge over the Great Egg Harbor River.

While the first train was still clearing the track of the last two cars, the second locomotive telescoped the first in a rear end collision, erupting in a boiler explosion. Passengers in the last wooden car were scalded by the soaring temperatures of the steam cylinder with estimates as high as 200 degrees. Nearly thirty fatalities and sixty injuries were recorded due to burns with the added inhalation of steam. The accident scene overwhelmed the village as the passengers outnumbered the entire population of Mays Landing. Unprepared for the extent of the calamity, neighbors became unknowing first responders,

as their homes were transformed into makeshift emergency rooms and ultimately morgues. A national telegraph system would alert dozens of newspapers across the country of the tragedy, while acknowledging the kindness extended by the citizens of the South Jersey community.

Curiously, most of New Jersey’s local and state press outlets provided minimal coverage of this major media event. Research into state archives as well as county records have implied a lack of candor in reports to government officials.

Between the cities of Philadelphia and Atlantic City the veil is lifting on the clues. Hospital records. Board meeting minutes. Court records.

County documents. In an era when rails ruled the roads and class determined privilege, this story had very

nearly been lost to time.

In 2018, an effort was launched to bring an award winning filmmaker to Mays Landing to create a made for television documentary. Funding fell through and interest in the project fell by the wayside. Bike shortage hits the shore

As riding gains popularity, it’s become more difficult to find a new one

he coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we do business, the way we socialize and almost everything else, but riding a bike remains the same, right? That’s supposed to be the one thing you never forget.

But while riding hasn’t changed, buying a bicycle has become a lot more difficult, it turns out. Around the nation and along the Jersey shore, bikes are in short supply, while demand is way up. According to the folks at two Ocean City bike shops, Annarellis and the Tuckahoe Bike Shop, it’s been difficult to keep new bikes in stock even as demand spikes.

Many want a simple means of reliable transportation, while others want to stay active with gyms closed and other fitness options limited. Lo-

cal stores saw an increase in demand in the spring.

Meanwhile, weeks of shut factories in China and around the world because of the virus has reduced the number of bikes for sale, and created shortages in parts as well.

A New York Times story by reporter Christina Goldbaum found that entry-level bike sales in March doubled compared to the year before, and that other categories were up by at least 121 percent.

A report from the marketing group NPD said bike sales in April generated an unprecedented $1 billion in sales, with the biggest growth in bikes for family use and at what the report described as “more approachable price points” showing the strongest increase. Typically, April sales would have fallen between the still-respectable $550 million and $575 million.

It’s not just the local shops having trouble keeping in stock, with major national retailers showing many of their most popular models as out of stock or with a long wait for delivery.

Ways to Cut Back on Sugar

ating too much sugar can have negative effects on your health.

It has been shown to contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and tooth decay. While sugar is naturally found in foods like fruits and vegetables, this type has little effect on your blood sugar and is considered very healthy. Fruits and vegetables also contain lots of healthy vitamins and minerals. The danger is from added sugars in processed foods and drinks. The average American currently consumes around 17 teaspoons (68 grams) of added sugar per day. This is more than the upper daily limit that some experts recommend, which is 6 teaspoons (25 grams) for women and 9 teaspoons (37 grams) for men.

Cutting back on sugary drinks can massively reduce your sugar intake. Sodas, energy drinks, sports drinks and fruit drinks contribute to 44% of the added sugar in the American diet. Even smoothies and fruit juices can contain large amounts of added sugar.

Luckily, there are some lower-sugar drink options. One easy option is water; It's free and has zero calories. You can fancy it up by drinking sparkling water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime. Water with mint and cucumber is also amazingly refreshing in warm weather. You can also opt for herbal or fruit teas, either hot or cold with ice. Of course, tea and coffee are great drink choices too.

Just try sticking to unsweetened tea, and black or flat white coffee.

Everyone loves dessert! The bad news is that most desserts don't provide much in the way of nutritional value. They are loaded with sugar, which causes blood sugar spikes and can leave you feeling tired, hungry and craving more sugar. Grain and dairy-based desserts, such as cakes, pies, doughnuts and ice cream, account for over 18% of the intake of added sugar in the American diet. If you feel the need for something sweet, you can try some alternatives. For example, fresh fruit. It is naturally sweet and full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. A sweet dessert option is dark chocolate. In general, the higher the cocoa content, the lower the sugar. Swapping sugar-heavy desserts for fresh or baked fruit not only reduces your sugar intake, but it also increases the fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in your diet.

Flooding our foods with condiments such as ketchup, barbecue sauce and sweet chili sauce are commonplace in most kitchens. However, most people aren't aware of their sugar content. Read the label to check if you are choosing the low-sugar option.

There are also some other options to flavor your food, such as using fresh or dried herbs and spices. They contain no sugar and can have added health benefits. Fresh chili can also give your food a sugar-free kick.

There’s also plain yellow mustard: tasty and contains virtually no sugar. Another way to find sugar-free flavor is using vinegar, which has a zing similar to ketchup. However, some balsamic vinegars and creams may contain sugar. Pesto is fresh and nutty, and great on sandwiches or eggs. Then there’s mayonnaise, which is sugar-free.

Low-fat options of foods like peanut butter, yogurt, and salad dressing are everywhere. However, the truth is that they usually contain more sugar and sometimes more calories than their full-fat counterparts. When you're trying to cut your sugar intake, it's often better to choose the full-fat

version instead.

Most people know that candy and cookies contain a lot of sugar, so they may look for "healthy" snack alternatives. Surprisingly, snacks like granola bars, protein bars and dried fruit can contain as much, if not more, sugar than their rivals such as chocolate bars. A handful of nuts is packed with good calories, protein and healthy fats. Another choice is no-added-sugar jerky, which is full of protein. Hard-boiled eggs are also high in protein, as well as high in vitamins and minerals. Again, fresh fruit also is an easy alternative.

Breakfast cereals have a lot of added sugar. Some cereals contain over 12 teaspoons (50 grams) per serving, which made it 88% sugar by weight. Popular breakfast foods, such as pancakes, waffles, muffins and jams, are also loaded with added sugar.

You can switch to these low-sugar breakfast options instead: hot oatmeal, Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts, eggs (boiled, poached, scrambled or as an omelet), or avocados.

Excess sugar in the diet can be incredibly harmful and has been linked to many chronic diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity. It is important to avoid obvious sources of sugar in your diet, such as desserts and sodas, but also to be aware of the hidden sugar in some common processed foods, including sauces, low-fat foods and so-called “healthy” snacks.

Lifeguard Racing is Beached for the Summer

A

s the summer of 2020 struggles to regain some semblance of normalcy with pizzas, rides and other boardwalk offerings and available, there is still a big part of “summer at the shore” that is absent; the lifeguard races.

Lifeguards from up and down the southern New Jersey coast train hard early in the season to represent their city’s beach patrol in several competitions consisting of the skills they may be called upon to use during a rescue; surf dashes, swimming races, paddleboard races or even hauling a heavy dummy sack into boat.

The Races begin in early July and continue through the beginning of September. In 2019, there were a total of 42 lifeguard competitions along the south Jersey coast. Some of the races I chose

to attend were the Longport Women’s Race, Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic, the Ocean City Women’s Race, the Margate Memorials, the Bill Howarth, Women’s Lifeguard, Invitational and the South Jersey Championships.

These events were a reunion of sorts. I would meet up with old high school friends and people I knew from around the island. Even if we only saw each other once a year at these events, it kept friendships alive.

Veteran lifeguards would get together and retell the stories of their days in the stand. My son and his wife were lifeguards in Ocean City and they both competed. But this is the Summer of 2020. Any assembly of large crowds is forbidden and the racing season has been cancelled.

Lifeguards are required to distance themselves while on duty and all safety protocols must be followed. This summer, the lifeguard boats will remain on the beach always ready for what they were designed for, saving lives.

Backyard Composting is Easier Than You Think grass, to create nutrient-rich organic soil amendment for your garden or houseplants by composting at home.

Making use of the organic material that would normally be thrown away helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste that is transported and sent to the landfill.

Creating and using compost in your garden reduces the need for chemical fertilizers to feed your plants and helps our sandy soils retain water.

What to Compost: Fruit and vegetable scraps, untreated grass clippings, leaves, flowers, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags without staples and branches can all be composted. Keeping meat, dairy, oils and grease out helps keep critters away. Your backyard compost will not heat up as hot as a commercial compost operation, so weed seeds and possible pathogens from pet waste will not be obliterated. Keep them out of your bin!

he past months we’ve all been spending more time at home and perhaps giving more thought to our daily habits. We’re looking to make the most of the resources we have; cooking more and spending more time in the backyard, maybe trying your hand at tending a vegetable garden. Now is the perfect time to start composting at home if you aren’t doing it already!

Composting is easier than you may think. Take a walk in the woods, and you’ll see that nature transforms fallen leaves into rich humus on the forest floor without any help from us.

Compost is a natural process; all you need to do is learn how composting works so that you can do it successfully at home.

Benefits of Backyard Composting ● Reduction in trash weight and volume ● Soil enrichment ● Slow release of nutrients in soil ● Increases plant's disease resistance ● Encourage beneficial fungi and bacteria ● Less money spent on water, fertilizer and pesticides

If you’ve been spending more time in the kitchen, you may have noticed; we generate a lot of food waste. In fact, in the United States, food waste is the single largest component of municipal waste. Backyard composting offers a beneficial way to recycle a good portion of that food. Instead of throwing it in the trash you can use it, along with leaves and

shouldn’t need to water your compost. Most manufactured bins have lids with openings to allow rainwater to infiltrate, and homemade models are often open on top.

Balancing “Greens and Browns”: Your kitchen scraps are the nitrogen rich “greens.” You’ll need to add carbon rich “browns” too.

As you are tidying up your yard, chop up leaves with a lawn mower and you’ll have the perfect material to mix in whenever you add food scraps. You can get geeky with carbon/nitrogen ratios, but you don’t need to.

Add enough “browns” to fully cover scraps and prevent odors.

Temperature: War m temps come from all the microorganisms working to break down the organic matter in your bin. A “hot” pile will be ready faster, but if you don’t feel a lot of warmth from your bin, don’t worry, be patient.

Size: Commercial bins are built to maintain heat and moisture. If you’re building your own bin, a minimum size of 3’ x 3’ x 3’ is recommended.

Aeration: Turning your pile increases oxygen flow and speeds up the process. Do it often if you like but remember that no one is turning the leaves on the forest floor and they’re still breaking down!

Enjoy a Spot of Tea from Your Garden

P

icture a garden tea party, complete with cucumber sandwiches, lemon curd, and scones. Of course, tea is brewing in the flowered teapot that rests on the vintage tablecloth. Now imagine those tea leaves came from your own garden. Well, the Victorian era and petite sandwiches might not be your thing, but you can still grow the ingredients for a perfect pot of tea.

True tea comes from the Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis). Native to Southeast Asia, the leaves and buds are used to make green, black, white, and oolong tea. Typically, Tea Plants

grow best in zones 8-11, but some cold-hardy varieties can be successfully grown in zones 6 and 7 as well.

This evergreen shrub with glossy green, serrated leaves will produce beautiful small white flowers with bright yellow stamens.

You can also make tea from infusions of herbs, flowers, bark, berries, and roots; but these will not be “true

teas” and instead are referred to as herbal teas or tisanes.

Some of the ingredients for herbal tea may already be growing in your garden.

Lemon verbena, mint, lavender, lemon balm, echinacea (coneflower), and hibiscus flowers can all be used to make herbal teas. Simply choose a few fresh leaves or flowers and steep in almost boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Experiment with timing, because the longer the tea is steeped, the more tannins will be released into your tea. Tannins can contribute to the antioxidants, color, and taste of your tea, but tea steeped

too long can release too many tannins, making your tea bitter.

If you are new to herbal tea making, start with one herb or flower and add different types to see which appeal to you most. Since the combinations are limitless, you can really have fun experimenting with different flavors. Mints come in many varieties such as ginger mint, pineapple mint, chocolate mint, or apple mint (to name a few). For an unusual tea, add basil, rosemary, or thyme.

lemon, orange, and honey can really enhance your cup of tea.

Before long, you will be looking at your garden differently, with an eye for what you can use for tea. Instead of regarding dandelions as weeds, you may find you have a taste for dandelion tea. I’m looking forward to making blackberry tea in which both the berries and leaves of my blackberry bushes can be used. A word of caution though, not all beautiful flowers are edible. Do your research—

some flowers such as foxglove, larkspur (delphinium), lily of the valley, and mountain laurel are highly toxic and can cause major illness or death. However, many herbs and flowers are known for their stress-reducing and medicinal properties.

Once you determine which plants can be used in tea, you may be inspired to create a teathemed garden. Fortunately, many pollinators will be attracted to the same flowers used to make herbal teas. I can picture teacups used as bird feeders strategically placed to carry out the theme. Be sure to add a little table and some chairs to serve your guests their tea. This time of year, a glass of herbal iced tea sounds very good.

Mom's Vibe: Homeschooling in a pandemic

ince my last column about decision making surrounding school this year, I have decided to homeschool my children. I fully understand, honor, and respect that this decision is not for every family. Since I have been sharing on my Instagram about my decisions, I have gotten a ton of questions so I wanted to share some things that I’ve learned and ideas I’ve come across since we last connected.

Whether you intend to homeschool fully, dive into virtual learning, or will be adapting to some sort of half-day situation, these ideas may benefit your child’s learning situation.

No matter how you cut it, we are all figuring out a new normal at home when it comes to education. Take

Unit Studies: One of my favorite discoveries is the concept of “unit studies” or “themes” for learning. August is a practice month for us so we are exploring what works and what doesn’t. I have one going into kindergarten and one going into fifth grade, so I wanted to find a way to educate them and be a part of their learning at the same time while also challenging them on their own levels. Unit studies give us that opportunity. The idea is a certain theme for a period of time that you dive into from all angles. That period of time can be determined by your family’s needs. I

will likely just plan ideas for the unit until the kids get bored or I run out of ideas.

For example, this week’s theme is “Weather and Storms.” So today, we started with modeling clay. While I made the kids breakfast, I asked them to use modeling clay to make me a tornado. We then read a National Geographic for Kids that I pulled up online about Storms. We read a few pages, had a conversation, and I asked them questions. After that, we watched two YouTube videos about the water cycle while my daughter used modeling clay to create her version of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

From there, we moved into the kitchen where we tried a super easy water cycle experiment. While I made lunch, I had them draw a storm for me that will go on our bulletin board for the current unit. I had to stop to get some work done, so I had them watch a Magic School Bus episode about clouds. Tonight, we will be reading from a chapter book about a young boy who is a storm chaser.

To be completely transparent, I don’t know what tomorrow will bring yet. I am winging this a little bit for this month as we figure out what works best for us. I intend to have some sort of solid ideas by September and I’d be happy to share them as they unfold.

Resources: There are so many online resources and it can feel quite overwhelming

to make a plan. What I am learning is that there is no one right answer. It is a combination of what works best for you, your children, their learning styles, and your lifestyle. The good news about that is, should you choose to homeschool, New Jersey doesn’t require us to follow a certain curriculum, which means the world is your oyster.

(Visit NJ.Gov for all of the guidelines) One of the biggest factors that I am taking into consideration is making sure that my 5th grader gets everything that she needs academically to be ready for whatever comes next, whether that is public school again or not. I have spent a lot of time on k12.com, which offers individual lesson plans to add to a homeschool curriculum.

I also signed up for a homeschool co-op (homeschoolbuyersco-op.org) where curriculums, tools, resources, and more are offered for free or at a discount. These tools can be used for full homeschooling or as an addition to part-time schooling. I am sure there are countless co-ops out there but TeachersPayTeachers.com , Education.com, and Time4Learning.com are some other valuable websites I have found.

Technology: You may have noticed in my description about today’s homeschooling, there were several technology references. There are too many resources and too much modern technology for us to not take advantage of it.

Starfall, PBS Kids, Smithsonian Learning Lab, Highlights Kids, Fun Brain, and Nasa’s Kids Club are just a few websites that offer great learning online for the kids. I found so many resources on Pinterest for these ideas. My point in sharing technology is to remind you that the technology is available and can work in your benefit.

Obviously, we all want to be hands-on with our children but let’s be realistic; it’s not an option for most of us all day. So learning what resources are available and that work for your family can benefit whatever situation your family ends up in this fall.

Family Fun on the Ocean City Bay

Communication: I will end with the fact that the biggest thing I have learned since starting my research and experimentation is that I have to include my kids in the conversation and planning. When we decided we would be homeschooling, I sat them down and I talked about some ideas that I had. I asked them what ideas they had and I asked them to draw a perfect homeschool classroom for me. My son’s picture looked much like what I had envisioned but my daughter put in a reading corner that I hadn’t thought of. She is not an enthusiastic reader so I was excited to see that she included that in her picture. My son enjoyed the “calm down corner” that he had in his preschool class so we will be creating one in our home. I’ve been asking them for help in decorating and reorganizing our front room to turn it into a classroom, which has allowed them to take part in the process.

We came up with one rule in our classroom together, which is we don’t raise our voices. While we are in the

classroom, I am their teacher and I asked that they respect me as such, while also promising them to respect them as my students. Anywhere else in the house, I’m their mommy and life can go on as usual.

Listen mommas, I do not have this “motherhood” thing figured out in any capacity. I don’t think any of us really do. I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants and pivoting where necessary for over ten years now and I don’t anticipate that changing. I am relying on the fact that I love my kids more than anything in this world and I try my best to follow my instincts and do right by them. I know you do too.

So, for whatever you do this fall, I just want to encourage you to remember that - nobody loves them the way you do. Nobody believes in them the way you do. Nobody can be what you are to them. Take pride in that!

Paddleboarding for the first time

ot to sound like a broken record, but after almost 80 days in quarantine, it was time to do something, anything! After giving it a pretty thorough ‘think’ I decided if I’ve learned anything during this ridiculously weird time it is, “if not now, when?”

I’ve realized there are only so many times you can say “I’ll do that when....” or “Yea, I plan on doing that at some point," or even worse, making plans to do something and then, not doing it (because to be honest, there is some kind of instant relief when it comes to canceling plans).

I’ve lived at the beach my whole life and have only ever experienced the bay on a boat and the ocean while swimming. Have I wanted to wakeboard, waterski, kayak, or paddleboard? Of course! And I always

planned on doing all of that “at some point” but to put to use what I’ve learned, if not now, when?

So out of my comfort zone, I went.

Within 20 minutes of deciding the first water sport I wanted to try was Stand Up Paddleboarding, (SUP) I realized a lifelong friend (we’ll call him JR) happened to have a SUP, a beginner SUP, and time on his hands to give me a lesson. Was it luck? Maybe. But I think it was meant to be.

So with my almost crippling fear of getting hurt (egotistically, not physically) I brought my boyfriend down to Lake Lenape and made him fish

far from where I was going to learn.

(I didn’t know how many times I could literally fall on my face before he didn’t find my clumsiness cute anymore). We got the paddleboards in the lake just fine so as you can imagine I was feeling pretty positive about the whole thing. Then I was directed to get on the board which, I’m not sure why I didn’t put together that paddleboarding is 90% balance and I only have about 10% on a good day. Sometimes I’ll fall when I’m standing still. (That takes skill.) Every time I see someone paddleboarding it looks so easy. I am here to tell you that while it’s not impossible, it’s certainly not easy.

I got up on the board on my first try, huzzah! Once again, I was feeling pretty positive about the whole experience. Then there was a tiny breeze, and just as JR was complimenting my stance and how well I was staying up, I immediately lost my balance and fell right in. I’m pretty sure I yelled some not so nice things in the process which I immediately apologized for when my head was above water, but I couldn’t promise him it wouldn’t happen again.

My lesson consisted of what I assume are the basics: ● Don’t paddle too far away from the board, it throws off your balance. ● Don’t look down at the board, it throws off your balance. ● Don’t stop moving, it throws off your balance.

You can probably see the theme of staying on the board is balance.

By my 4th time falling off, I realIzed it wasn’t the falling that was bruising my ego, it was the fact that for me, there is no graceful way of getting back up on the board. The way I looked as I wiggled my way to the middle of the board, then having to stand up holding the paddle, was

probably a big reason why I had never tried that, or any other water sport.

Luckily for me, JR is an incredibly patient man and a very good teacher.

I couldn’t help but be a little frustrated though. I understood the basics, I just couldn’t communicate that knowledge to my weirdly off-balance body. I even fell off in a way my instructor had never seen before. Neither of us had any idea how I managed to do it. I’m going to call that trendsetting. It sounds a lot better than whatever it actually was.

I did end up getting the hang of it, and it was super fulfilling. I was up, and I stayed up. I saw this as a good sign that if I could do this, I can try other new things!

As we were finishing up our lesson, JR told me he was going to jump in the water to cool off. I casually mentioned he could have at least pretended to fall off his board to make me feel just a little bit better about the 5 or so times I fell off mine.

He laughed, and I asked “Have you ever taken someone out for their first time without them falling at least once?” He said no, and I felt a little better.

We spotted my boyfriend on the coastline and I paddled to him so he could get a lesson as well since he has also never tried it.

He did not fall once...so I pushed him in.

his recipe is really easy, and you can do either shrimp or scallops if you don't want to combine. I cheat. I purchase a bottle of Teryaka sauce for my marinade - that's it.

I SHOP LOCAL - Bob's seafood for the shrimp and scallops. ● 1/2 Lb Shrimp ( Jumbo, 21/25 or Extra Large 26/30, works for me, but your choice) ● 1/2 Lb Sea Scallops ● 1 bottle of Veri Veri Teryaki sauce. ● Bacon Mike & Katie Devaney of Northfield ● Toothpicks (soaked in water for at least 30 minutes) or large bowl with Veri Veri Sauce Clean and devein shrimp, remove A little goes a long way. St Nicholas of Tolentine Welcomes Reverend Mohan to Continue Good Works

ne of the most historic landmarks in Atlantic City is St Nicholas of Tolentine Church. You will recognize it for its distinguishable

Romanesque architecture and three cross-adorned pinnacles, sitting right in the heart of the city. The 142 mesmerizing stained glass windows and 18 murals instantly draw the eyes of onlookers. It is without doubt a breath-taking piece of architecture. St Nicholas made headlines last September when it was the location for Vice President Pence’s nephew’s wedding. The ceremony saw large parts

of Atlantic City being shut down for several days as VP Pence visited numerous local restaurants, and the street of the church was not accessible to the public on the day. St Nicholas was selected for the wedding due to the bride’s connections to the area having grown up in Ventnor, and she knew the significance of hosting her special day in the historical church.

Built in 1905, the magnificent structure has understandably seen better days, with much of the inside experiencing standard wear and tear to the paint and plastering work. In October 2019, work commenced to restore the interior by then pastor, Rev. Jon Thomas of the Parish of St Monica. The Parish of St Monica’s encompasses three churches in Atlantic City: St Michael; Our Lady, Star of the Sea; and St Nicholas. An independent non-profit was formed in 2018, called “The Friends of St. Nicholas of Tolentine,” in order to raise funds for the church restoration. They host several fundraising events and rely on donations from patrons of the church, or even just people who appreciate the value of this landmark. Their fundraising efforts so far allowed the transcepts to be restored in fall 2019; however, this is just the beginning.

Prior to the restoration work last year, the 1916 Moller pipe organ was rebuilt in 2006 by Peragallo and there are plans in place to restore it over the next several years. The roof was replaced in 2009 and all the masonry work was repointed by the pastor preceding Rev. Jon, Msgr. William Hodge. Two years after the new roof was put on, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This achievement has further fueled the desire to restore the church back to its former glory.

Last month, Rev. Jon moved on to serve a different parish, and his replacement, Rev. Kevin Mohan, took over as Pastor, carrying on the legacy and determination to restore the interior of St Nicholas and serve the people of the Parish of St Monica’s. Rev. Mohan is originally from Blackwood, Gloucester Township, where he was assigned to before making the move to the Parish of St Monica’s. Before this, he lived in Gloucester City along with Msgr Hodge, working at the parish and the local high school. He was assigned

his first role as a priest in Williamstown. The decision to move to the Parish of St Monica’s was encouraged by Bishop Sullivan of Camden. Rev Mohan said “[Bishop Sullivan] expressed his confidence that my particular gifts are well suited for this moment in the life of the parish. As I’ve prayed and reflected since then, I have also come to view some of my past experiences as good preparations for this position.” In terms of how he has found the experience so far, he could not sound more excited to be leading the congregation: “Well, I've hit the ground running! A pandemic is a challenging time to begin to lead a parish, but then again, following Jesus is challenging under any circumstance. The people I've met seem to be grateful for the leadership Fr. Jon provided, and I'm very glad to be following his term as pastor. People also seem to be interested to get to know me, so thanks for this opportunity!”

Rev. Mohan recognizes that the biggest challenge at the moment is getting people to return to church now quarantine is over. He understands that for some with compromised immune systems, staying home is necessary. However, he wants to welcome back others. He assures me that the church is doing everything to keep people safe. Mass still takes place at St Nicholas on Saturdays at 4pm and Sundays at 10:30 am.

Rev. Mohan wants everyone to have their place at the church, regardless of their previous attendance or lack thereof: “I want to welcome back Catholics who have not been to church since March, and those who had not been coming to church even before that. I also want to welcome anyone who does not belong to any church.” This is a great opportunity for anyone who has not been for a while, or ever, to join the young and ambitious new Reverend as he em-

In terms of Rev. Mohan’s plans for restoring St Nicholas, he is still getting up to speed on what the organization has planned, but he is ready to get started and starting pushing to raise funds. He commented that “how quickly it progresses will also depend on our ability to continue to raise funds for this very special project.” The last fundraising event organized was back in December and due to COVID-19, future fundraising events have been put on hold. Restoring the inside of the church is the top priority at the moment, and if you visit you can see where some of the previous money has been put to use with the beautiful paintwork to the interior. As you can imagine, there is still a long way to go. From the entertainment world, I’m going to take a different tactic this week and recommend a few books that I have read that I found quite enjoyable. There’s a novel concept right? Read a book! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● What a weird week for the Phillies. I briefly touched on the fact that some members of the Miami Marlins had tested positive for COVID-19 in last week’s column, but that set off a full seven days where the Phillies did not pay a baseball game. At one point, a coach and two staffers on the Phillies side of things tested positive, but then it came back that those were false positives and ultimately the Phillies finally returned to the field against the Yankees on Monday in New York, where they lost.

Because of the Tropical Storm Isaias, the Phillies chose NOT to stay overnight in New York and they bussed up to Yankee Stadium and returned after the game. So, a

Since I last wrote, the Phillies got an extended break from baseball thanks to the actions of the Miami Marlins The Eagles had a key member of their nest test positive for COVID-19. The Flyers began round robin play in the NHL postseason in impressive fashion. The Sixers were dangerously close to starting out their return to play at 0-2. The Philadelphia Union are still alive and one of only four teams remaining in the MLS return to play. It’s time for the PGA Championship in golf, but first we have to address the winner of last week’s WGC event in Memphis and

Speaking of football, the big story out of the Eagles was that offensive tackle Lane Johnson had tested positive for COVID-19 along with Nate Gerry and Jordan Mailata. That was quickly overshadowed on Sunday night when the team announced that Head Coach Doug Pederson had tested positive for coronavirus and was quarantining at home. Pederson will continue to lead the Eagles virtually as much as he can, while assistant head coach and running backs coach Duce Staley assumes head coaching responsibilities at the NovaCare Complex in Pederson’s absence.

My goodness, if the head coach can get it, how is the NFL going to keep the league and everyone involved safe once things start for real in September? That is the $64,000 question right now!

Back to Coach Pederson, as this could actually work out to be a good thing for Duce Staley. He’s been bypassed before for a head coaching job in the NFL, but to the other teams, the fact the he’s the one actually there running the team while Pederson quarantines, might give him an edge in the next

day that started with saliva swabs, ended with a 6-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

All things considered, Jake Arietta pitched pretty decent as the Phillies hung with the Yankees for five innings. Arietta actually at one point last week was going to a local high school in New Jersey just to play catch with Tommy Hunter to keep his arm loose, so the fact that he went five innings and only gave up three runs was pretty impressive if you ask me.

The Phillies “Achilles heel” if you ask me, is their bullpen. Just like Ramon Rosso on opening night, and Cole Irvin two days later, this time it was Deolis Guerra who got roughed up when he came into the ballgame. Guerra issued a leadoff walk, hit a batter, and gave up a three-run home run to Gio Urshela that changed a 3-1 ballgame into a 6-1 deficit and that was the momentum changer.

Up next, the Phillies will host the Yankees for a doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday. In fact, because of the weird shift in the schedule, the Phillies next 13 games, and 16 of their next 17 will now be played at home.

The Phillies aren’t the only team dealing with COVID-19 troubles.

Seven Cardinals players and six staff members have tested positive for the virus. That means the Cards series with Detroit has been postponed. Like I wrote last week, the “bubble” in hockey, basketball and soccer appears to be working, but in baseball we are seeing outbreaks. That makes me really nervous about how the NFL is

Let’s turn to hockey now as the Flyers sure surprised me with their excellent effort in game one of the round robin format against Boston. Where do I begin? Carter Hart with 34 saves kept the Flyers in the game in the 1st period when the ice seemed tilted more for the Bruins than the Flyers. The 4th line came up huge as Michael Raffl had a goal and an assist. Nate Thompson scored his first playoff goal as a Flyer, and Tyler Pitlick had four hits and drew a penalty. Oh yes, the 4th line was big in the Flyers 4-1 win over the Bruins for sure.

There were timely goals too, as when Boston got a lucky bounce near the end of the 2nd period to score their only goal, the Flyers responded immediately as young

defenseman Phil Myers scooped up a loose puck in the neutral zone and picked the top corner just eight seconds later to extend the Flyers margin back to a three-goal lead. I was completely surprised and pleased by how well the Flyers played against Boston. Up next, a Thursday game against Washington before they close out the round-robin on Saturday with a game against Tampa Bay. The only negative from the Flyers first “real” game since March was the loss of Raffl late in the game.

Raffl had to be helped off the ice with 6 minutes and 17 seconds left after what appeared to me to be a “slew foot” kind of move from Bruins defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. It’s unfortunate because Raffl had a goal and an assist in the win. He also plays a big role on the Flyers effective penalty kill.

The 31-year-old will be replaced in the lineup by rookie Joel Farabee and we’ll have to wait and see how the loss of Raffl impacts the Flyers. For now though, as I write this, it’s nice to see them win with contributions from a lot of “secondary” names. That means if & when guys like Claude Giroux,

Which brings us to the Sixers. First of all, they let a guy named T.J. Warren light them up for a career high 53 points in the Pacers 127121 win over the Sixers to kick off the restart. Not only couldn’t they stop him, they also couldn’t stop turning the ball over! The Sixers committed 21 turnovers in the loss, and that left an ugly taste in their mouths to start things off.

So, then they faced the San Antonio Spurs in their second game, and point guard Shake Milton bailed them out in that one, as his three-ball with 7.2 seconds left, helped the Sixers hang on and win 132-130 to improve to 1-1 in the reboot. The Sixers may have won the game, but there’s no denying that 4th quarter defense continues to be a problem for this team. The Spurs scored 43 points in the final quarter, after the Sixers let the Spurs score 46 in the 4th quarter the game before. Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris & Josh Richardson all played well on the offensive end, but if the Sixers can’t figure out how to stop anyone, they’re not going to last long in the playoffs when they get there.

Ben Simmons is missing in action in Orlando right now. Against the Spurs, he finished with eight points, five rebounds, one block, and one steal before fouling out with 2:12 left in the game. He didn’t attempt a three-pointer.

The big move of Ben to the “four” position at power forward, doesn’t seem to be working so far…!

Ultimately, it all falls on Head Coach Brett Brown to get this right. Sure this is all happening during strange times, but you get the feeling that if the Sixers don’t go deep into the playoffs, this might be the final year for Brown on the bench with the team. The old saying holds especially true in the NBA, and that is, “When things are going poorly, you can’t fire the players!”

From golf, I was so excited by playoff hockey returning, I actually caught myself watching more of the Rangers-Hurricanes playoff game the other day than the WGC Fed-Ex St. Jude Classic in Memphis. I did enjoy that Justin Thomas won and reclaimed his world #1 ranking. I really enjoyed that Phil Mickelson had a top-five finish at age 50. What I enjoyed most though, was seeing Phil’s former caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay on the winning bag in the same group as

his former boss on Sunday. Thomas' longtime caddie, Jimmy Johnson, fell ill during the third round of the Memorial two weeks ago.

Thomas' dad and swing coach, Mike, was in the gallery and took over his bag there. When Johnson still felt dizzy last week, Thomas reached out to Mackay and asked if he would step in. “Bones” will be on JT’s bag this week at the PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco.

Because soccer in the U.S. doesn’t get the mainstream attention like it does around the rest of the world, maybe you’ve missed how GREAT the Philadelphia Union have performed at the MLS restart in Orlando. They are through to the final four and will face the Portland Timbers in a semifinal match as of the writing of this column. No matter what the outcome is, you have to tip your cap to a Union team that finally has the right players, playing the right system, against the best of the MLS. It’s been about two years since Ernst Tanner joined the club as Sporting Director (sort of like the GM in other sports), and Oreland, PA native Jim Curtin now has the horses he needs to compete on a nightly basis against other top teams. Again, I’m not

the world’s biggest soccer nut, but even I can recognize success when I see it, and no matter how you break it down, the Union’s play at this point is a resounding success!

My last sports item is about the locally run ACBL, or Atlantic County Baseball League. I do want to point out that last week I wrote about the uniqueness of the league being a wood-bat only league. Well, it wasn’t that way for all 135 years, as there were a bunch of years that the ping of aluminum led to scores of 2220, for example. However, it’s wood-bat only now, and it’s just great. The playoffs are here, and other than Tropical Storm Isaias, nothing is going to slow the ACBL down. Again, I urge you if you have a chance, get out and watch some great baseball for free. Bring your chair, bring your mask, and enjoy!

Instead of TV shows or movies this week, I hope you’ll indulge me and allow me to recommend a few books that I just read. The first one is “The Answer Is……Reflections on My Life” about Alex Trebek.

Now, I’m a JEOPARDY geek, like many, I love watching the game each night at 7p on 6abc. I was so saddened to learn that Trebek is fighting pancreatic cancer. The

book combines illuminating personal anecdotes with Trebek’s thoughts on a range of topics, including marriage, parenthood, education, success, spirituality, and philanthropy. Trebek also addresses the questions he gets asked most often by JEOPARDY fans, such as what prompted him to shave his signature mustache, his insights on legendary players like Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, and his opinion of Will Ferrell’s Saturday Night Live impersonation. It was a very quick read, but I loved it. What is…..we love you Alex!

Finally, I also enjoyed the Al Michaels book titled “You Can't Make This Up: Miracles, Memories, and the Perfect Marriage of Sports and Television”. This one was even more in my “wheelhouse” as I spent 20 years working as a TV sportscaster on a regular basis. When Michaels exclaimed “Do You Believe in Miracles? Yes!” at Lake Placid in 1980, I was only nine years old and didn’t fully appreciate the moment I think until years later. I absolutely love Al Michaels, and you’ll definitely enjoy his stories about working with Howard Cosell, Monday Night Football, the earthquake in San Francisco in 1989 and more. He

even addresses his relationship with O.J. Simpson, all in an entertaining and can’t put it down sort of way. I highly recommend this one if you haven’t read it.

I’ll close by reiterating what I wrote at the top of the column. Tropical Storm Isaias is swirling as I write this and I hope & pray that everyone is safe. Lord knows we’ve had a difficult 2020 and don’t need any more bad news. No matter what, please try and be kind to one another! Nothing bad ever happened to someone who led with kindness, right? Oh, and wear your mask. Let’s all knock down this COVID-19 together!

4th Annual 48 Blocks Rises to the Challenge

t Shore Local, we look forward to the annual “48 Blocks Atlantic City” celebration hosted by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation every summer. Like most things these days, this year will look a little bit different.

In years past, the annual event included a city-wide celebration of the arts packed with larger than life murals, yoga classes, live painting exhibits, art classes, cover bands, story slams, happy hours, and more. The goal of the event is to engage the regional community in the celebration of public art in Atlantic City.

For the fourth annual event, the team at ACAF was challenged to bring the event to life virtually. Though, by the looks of things, it was less of a “challenge” and more of an open opportunity to create something special.

Working alongside the School of Arts and Humanities at Stockton University, the Atlantic City Arts Foundation team rallied the troops to create a three-day virtual event that kicks off Friday, August 7th, and continues through Sunday, August 9th.

We spoke with the executive director of ACAF, Joyce Hagen who shared with great enthusiasm about the upcoming weekend. Hagen shares, “What has been really interesting is that each year, we try to remain flex-

ible in the work that we want to do for the community. We gather information from the public about what worked and did not work well after each event. Over the years, we have gone through major transitions and we continue to look at how Stockton can continue their role as one of our major partners.

This year, with the support of Lisa Honaker who serves as Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Stockton, Stockton was able to devote staff resources to help us take 48 Blocks online.”

The event kicks off at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 7th with an Atlantic City music video by Shawn Rock and events continue through the weekend, coming to a finale with a performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by the Atlantic City Theatre Company.

The schedule is arranged in thematic blocks. The mornings set the tone for the day with yoga and events such as a “meditative nature walk” with Luanne Usinger and the “You Are Mona Lisa” project by Chris Galluccio.

Saturday afternoon is geared toward the young and young-at-heart including “Mad Libs for Kids," “Haiku and You,” a workshop for youth ages 8-14, and “Tomkommedy” for Kids by local comedian, Michelle Tomko.

The early evenings are geared toward happy-hour segments such as “Mad Libs for Adults” and “Stories of AC.” The evenings settle down with relaxing events and theatrical productions including a dramatic reading by Aria Da Capo and “Dracula” performed by the AC Ballet.

Other events to highlight include Yvonne Battle-Felton who will pres-

ent an online storytelling open mic entitled, “You Are Here!” During this event, which takes place on Sunday at 12:00 pm, five writers will be sharing fiction or non-fiction stories set in or inspired by Atlantic City.

On Sunday at 4:30 pm, Val Feo will be presenting a live segment from her home art gallery entitled, “So Val Art - At Home Studio Tour” where she will showcase her artwork as well as make it available for purchase.

On Saturday at 6:30 pm, Ray Tyler will present a live poetry segment for which he has invited several poets to read their original poetry in an open mic format.

Juggling lessons by Tina Notaro will go live on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Participants can use balled up socks or any type of balls to class.

Teaching Martial Arts in a pandemic

H

eidi Devine, owner of Devine's Martial Arts in Mayslanding, is no stranger to life changes and the ability to pivot when necessary. However, the Covid-19 pandemic took her creative thinking skills to new heights.

Ms. Devine has an education in teaching and has been practicing martial arts for 20 years. The two passions combined when she and her family decided to open a Martial Arts school in October 2014.

By January, their entire building had flooded and they were forced to find a new location. They began renting space from a gymnastics studio until that gym ultimately closed and the Devine's were once again challenged to relocate.

Eventually, in 2017 Devine's Martial Arts found a home in the ACME shopping center in Mayslanding. Offering classes for ages three to adult, the Devine's Martial Arts gym is always buzzing with

high energy people.

The martial arts studio was challenged yet again to figure out their next move. Like many of us, Ms. Devine believed that quarantine would be shortlived, and we would be back in action in just a few weeks. With plans to close for a week and offer some sort of creative learning opportunity for week two, the Devine's thought they had a plan.

We all know how those two weeks went. The Devine’s team quickly got creative and students did not miss a beat. Ms. Devine and her children immediately became a sense of normalcy in the homes of students during uncertain times. Zoom classes for all ages were offered several times per week. Students were also able to schedule one-on-one classes with Ms. Devine, attend virtual lunches with her, or find her presenting virtual storytime every Sunday on live feeds. Ms. Devine is one of the warmest, kindest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet so the familiar voice during a time when so much felt unfamiliar was a gift for the families that train at Devine's.

Devine's team didn't stop there. A Google Classroom was set up where various forms of at-home workouts were offered, weekly posts with different challenges were presented, and students

could track their training time. They even began offering their Kids Night In (formerly, Parents Night Out) virtually, which gave parents two hours to unwind and offered the children a time of virtual games, challenges, and fun.

The biggest challenge came when Devine's students were ready for their next belt test but like everything else, Heidi Devine and family made it a special experience for everyone. Heidi Devine shares, “The kids work so hard for four months to prepare for a belt test. It was supposed to be the week after we closed. Originally, we planned to just move it until the end of April but when things closed indefinitely and these kids kept showing up and training hard, I wanted to make sure they got the reward for their work.”

Students were broken up into small Zoom groups for their belt tests with several instructors watching on the other end to effectively moderate the test.

Several weeks after testing, the Devines made their way across several towns delivering new belts, surprise gift bags, and a socially distant “air hug” to every student who had earned their new belt.

“I normally see students every week, multiple times per week. So all of a sudden to not see them and be with them all the time was hard. It was refreshing

to see everybody during our belt deliveries.” expressed Ms. Devine.

Now that things have begun to open back up, Devine’s Martial Arts respects that not every family can, or feels comfortable enough to, attend in-person classes so they have continued to offer various angles of teaching. Currently, students can RSVP to attend a no-contact, in-person class where attendance is limited. When the weather permits, Devine’s offers classes in the park, which are well received by students. Zoom classes are still being offered weekly.

During in-person classes, another instructor will facilitate a Zoom class for those who are not yet comfortable coming to the studio.

New students have the option of attending online or in the Devine’s Martial Arts studio as well. Ms. Devine and her family are hoping for a future of fewer restrictions but until then, they are doing their very best to accommodate and care for every single student that calls Devine’s their martial arts home.

s I wrote last week, the use of paper money during the early 1800’s was subject to much uncertainty, with no way to easily tell If the note being used for payment of goods or services was real, or if the bank issuing the note was even still in business. Hence, the preferred means of doing business was to use gold or silver to conduct transactions.

The Civil War created a major upheaval through all aspects our society and country, not the least was its impact on our monetary system.

At first, because the out-come of the war was uncertain, people hoarded coins and spent paper (when they found someone to take it), creating a major difficulty in making change. This led to the creation of fractional currency which could be used in place of coins. These notes were printed until the 1870’s and were printed in denominations of three cents through fifty cents The most important change came about because of the need to fund the war and the total distrust of paper money. Up to the Civil War, banks received their charter through the states in which they operated, but a change came about by the government taking charge and requiring banks to obtain a federal charter to operate. In order for banks to issue currency, they would have to purchase U. S. government bonds equal to the amount of money that they were to issue, so were the bank to fail, the U.S. comptroller of the currency would sell the financial institutions’ bonds and place the proceeds in a “Redemption Fund”. The notes would retain their full legal tender status, even if the issuer failed. This insured that notes released by any bank in the system could circulate anywhere in the nation, so for the first time a traveler could expect his currency to be accepted at full value anywhere in the country, including places known as Indian Territory, since those locations were not yet states.

Instead of a hodge-podge of different designs on notes as was the case with the previous banking system, all National Bank Notes, as they were called, were uniform for each denomination, for example, all $10 notes’ design would be the same, but with the name and state of the bank along with its’ charter number printed on the bill.

Each denomination had a different design, but all denominations were uniform except for the above. Banks could order whatever denomination they felt they needed, since some smaller banks would have no need for large denomination bills, but banks in larger cities, such as Philadelphia and New York would need bills such as $50 and $100.

rency, the government was able to tap the large reserves of money held in the liquid small banks through the sale of bonds to those banks. This in return help fund the war effort.

Other types of currency were created after the war, all with different backing, such as Treasury Notes and Silver and Gold Certificate which were backed by the metals.

National Currency was issued until the depression, when many banks failed. Gold Certificates were declared illegal in 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt called for all gold coin and Gold Certificates in private hands be turned into the government and Silver Certificates could no longer be redeemed for silver after the summer of 1968. Periodically all backing of our paper money has ceased, so the backing is merely our trust in the government. Good luck with that one.

An interesting fact about our currency, unlike other countries, all currency issued by the United States government since the 1860’s, with the exception of the Gold Certificates are still legal tender at face value, although people would never spend them because their collector value far exceed the face value.

he USGA Women’s Open has a long and rich history here in South Jersey. The prestigious National Championship was hosted a record three times at historic Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield.

The very first course ever to host three US Women’s Opens, Atlantic City C.C. had the US Women’s champion crowned on its legendary links in 1948, 1965 and 1975. Sandra Palmer and Carol Mann won the 1975 and 1965 championships, respectively, while the 1948 Open, the third US Women’s Championship, was won by golfing icon, Olympic legend, and World Golf Hall of Famer, Babe Didrickson Zaharias.

Babe would win two more US Opens in 1950 and 1954, but her victory at Atlantic City Country Club was her, and the course’s, first US Open title. Zaharias won 48 professional tournaments in all and helped to establish the LPGA Tour in 1950. Fellow Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, then only an amateur, and only 18 years of age, finished 2nd to Sandra Palmer in the 1975 Championship at ACCC. Lopez won 52 professional tournaments in her storied career, winning 48 tournaments on the LPGA Tour with three of those wins at the Women’s PGA Championship. Lopez never won the US Women’s Open, but she placed second, or tied for second, four times beginning with her incredible runner-up at ACCC in ’75.

Diving into Aquatics Exercise

ne of my favorite exercise classes to teach is Aqua Fitness. I’ve been teaching a shallow end water class for about 10 years and it is so much fun. I originally decided to get certified in it because there was a need for instructors and it would be a good balance to the 8-10 spin classes that I was teaching per week. I had no idea that I would grow to love it.

The buoyancy of the water is easy on your joints. That makes water aerobics a good choice if you have joint problems, chronic pain or are recovering from injury. It's also popular among seniors and women who are expecting.

Though it's low-impact, you can make the workout challenging. For example, do more repetitions of each move or go faster during the workout. Moves like underwater bicep and hammer curls will work the arms.

Pool noodles and kickboards can also be used for added resistance. Walking, jogging, jacks, and underwater kicks are popular in water aerobics workouts. They give your legs a great workout. Squats, lunges, and high knee kicks help tone your glutes.

Low-impact water workouts can help strengthen back muscles and ease back pain. Water aerobics will also

improve your flexibility and the resistance of the water helps tone muscles and build strength. Some instructors use pool noodles, kickboards, and foam weights designed for water aerobics classes. Even though being in the pool seems very relaxing, it is still giving your heart and muscles a great workout. It’s also great if you don’t like to sweat but really want a good workout.

Water aerobics is a great way to improve your heart health. Just being in the water lowers your blood pressure. Water fitness can help you shed extra pounds while you stay cool in the pool. Like other aerobic exercises, it will help keep your blood sugars under control. It is easier on the feet than most other exercises. A lot of people, including myself, wear aqua sneakers that provide better traction in the pool. Exercising in water is great if you have arthritis or knee pain. I have so many in my classes that need knee replacements or have had them and the water helps them tremendously. You put less pressure on those aching joints, and are able to spend more time working out.

So, if you’re looking for a break from your usual fitness routine, why not dive into aquatic exercise? Exercising in water can provide a great full-body workout without some of the drawbacks of land-based exercises especially if you’re dealing with an injury.
